I was taken aback for a moment when reading Rudolf Steiner’s verse for this week, Week 20. But then I realized that he was presenting an image as if in a photo negative. Now I can see that he was trying to convey how a person’s life would be if separated from others, if severed from the Spirit world. Each one of us would die if left alone.

I feel at last my life’s reality,

which, severed from the world’s existence,

would in itself obliterate itself,

and building only on its own foundation,

would in itself bring death upon itself.

We are spiritual and gregarious creatures. The Spirit Light and human love are essential ingredients for our species to live. We need the communion with the Divine, as well as the embrace of the human community to keep our Soul sparkle alive. Barbara Marx Hubbard, a founder of Foundation for Conscious Evolution, encourages us to form communities, even small ones. I agree. Yes, continue to work on your own to mature and grow into your Highest Self, while simultaneously connect with others on the same path to ignite communal passion for raising humanity to the next level, to peaceful co-creative co-existence.

Have you noticed that lilies always grow in a bunch? One stem holds two or more glorious blossoms. Yes, we have to spend time alone to find our core and the source of soulful sustenance. But we also need nurturing surroundings to share our fruits. In today’s world, we tend to forget both. We complain that our packed schedules don’t allow space for inward explorations and that we’re too busy to cultivate friendships. All the while we’re wasting hours and hours immersed in an odd communion with electronic devices. We constantly engage in elaborate schemes to construct barbwire protection of the personal medieval-like towers, nay, dungeons, into which we lock the Soul. We pour an enormous amount of energy to isolate ourselves from ourselves and others.

Earning cash for the sake of accumulating wealth is ludicrous. Money in itself is empty. If stuck in one place, unbalance occurs, and we all suffer. We’re sucked into fabricating enticing masks to cover up the dull and uncomfortable inner chambers devoid of Soul life. It’s up to each one of us to make a choice: Life or death.

Without the spark of Spirit Light, we shrivel up. Without communal love, we dry up. And we die alive. I can see a scary trend… Many are turning into soul-less creatures, resembling zombies, organic robots, with no free will. Wake up. You are a spiritual being in a human body. Don’t forget your wings, don’t sell your free will in exchange for elusive worldly fame and passing physical comforts.

What do you choose? Aimless walk through twilight zone, or vibrant engagement with Light and Love and Life. Which path will you take: the road of destruction, or the trail of creation?

Human souls breathe with the Soul of our home planet and awaken when touched by its expressions in the seasons of Nature. We’re bathed in the sunshine during the day; we’re caressed by the Moon, planets, and stars at night. We feel the monthly lunar cycle in the flow of our bodily fluids, women and men alike. The energy of the heavens colors the Earth as the Sun passes through the constellations on its journey through the four key positions in the dance between the Sun and the Earth: Winter and Summer solstices, Spring and Autumnal equinoxes.

Did you know that the Moon phases are on the same schedule everywhere on Earth? With the incremental 24-hour delay, of course, hour by hour from meridian to meridian. The Sun bathes the globe with two different intensities: the Summer-sphere with the blazing fire, and the Winter-sphere with a gentle caress. The Moon moves the oceans, breathing in unison: exhaling and inhaling with sunrise and sunset.

Oh, how many of the celestial dances have we, the post-modern humans, forgotten! We tend to ignore the seasons; we adjust the climate of our surroundings with heaters and air conditioners. The “advanced” hum of technology pushed the magic of the Universe into the shadows. We stay up late at nights, not to watch the stars, but to stare at the television and computer screens. We can’t even see much of the planets and stars in the big cities anyway. We’re sealed in office and residential buildings with artificial lights and climates: heat lodges in the Winter, ice cubicles in the Summer.

And most of the time, we aren’t allowed to open the windows: “For your own safety,” we are advised. The more the über technological society tries to structure our lives into rigid boxes, the more we yearn for the organic union with Nature.

In secret to encompass now

with memory what I’ve newly got

shall be my striving’s further aim:

Thus, ever strengthening, selfhood’s forces

shall be awakened from within

and growing, give me to myself.

The dance between the Sun and the Moon nurtures the planet with life-sustaining flow of energy. As we, humans, tune into this cosmic choreography, we begin to re-cognize the streaming expression of our individual souls—bathing in the seasons of the Sun, breathing with the sea tides—yet, each finding our own unique groove.

Alas, it’s a struggle. The advertisements bombard us with directions on how to feel and what to do throughout the year. The day after Halloween, all the stores in the U.S. already begin displaying their Christmas fare. The Valentine’s Day merchandise pops up right after the New Year’s Day. The seasonal festivals have become just another marketing tool. The monetary gain may be there, but it doesn’t work for human beings because we are not machines. We have a heart, which is more powerful than brain. And we have a Soul, the spiritual seed in our human body, nestled in the heart. We’re fueled by Light and sustained by Love.

Yes, you’re more than your physical appearance and belongings. You’re more than your titles and station in society. You’re more than your beliefs and habits. But how do you get in touch with your Soul? How do you nourish this spiritual seed in your human heart?

Last week, we celebrated the festivals of Lammas in the Northern hemisphere and Imbolc in the Southern hemisphere. Release the final remnants of your overgrown skin; embrace the freshly awakening Spirit forces within you; envision your new self growing bright in the Love of your Highest Self. For the Northerners, this is the time to notice the grand vision of our highest Spirit potential. For the Southerners, it’s about the vision from the last Lammas ready to rise up with the sap of the trees in the practical, earthly manifestation.

Breathe, relax, slow down. Even medical research cannot deny that these are the basic requirements for vibrant health. And take time for weekly, nay, daily contemplation to commune with your Soul. Create a quiet space where you can tune into the insights of the Spirit stored in your beingness.

We’ve had a few heat waves this summer already, in New York, USA, and Europe, and there are more to come. Yes, it’s hot and humid, as it tends to be in the Northern hemisphere in July and August. The weather is pushing us to step off the fast track. Yet, we can still get the work done. One can often accomplish more when operating in a smoother groove. You don’t even need an AC. I’ve been living without the artificial conditioning of captured air for years, and I’m getting used to a built-in AC in an apartment where I live now. However, I find the fans to be much more effective to cool and circulate the air. My body became more resilient to hot and humid weather in the previous apartment with fans only, and I’m turning to be less open to heat and humidity. Is the air surrounding the Earth more difficult to endure now? We’re made to adjust to the gradual changes in temperature from season to season, but if temperature changes are more extreme, how do we face them? Our inner sensors get overwhelmed when exposed to the constant swinging from the indoor ice cubicles to the scorching outdoor environs, all in a course of a workday.

Most of the time in the past, I didn’t even realize that we were going through extreme waves until I heard people complain. Well, I now know better what the temperatures are: I check a weather website every morning on my smartphone and on my computer. Okay, it’ll be cooler or warmer today. And perhaps we’ll have some rain. I try not to react to it, or at least do my best not to. I make a mental note, and prepare. When I go out in the summer heat wherever I am, I put on flowing linen and cotton clothes. And off I go, mindfully. I tend to avoid walking in the middle of the day when it’s the hottest. Earlier in the morning and later in the day, around the sunset it’s easier. Yes, I’m enjoying the Sun and the Moon, grateful for their nourishments.

Can I expand my soul

that it unites itself

with cosmic Word received as seed?

I sense that I must find the strength

to fashion worthily my soul

as fitting raiment for the spirit.

We’re at the height of Summer here in the Northern hemisphere. In the Celtic calendar, the festival of Lammas or Lughnasadh on August 2 marks the mid-point of the Sun’s path between the Summer Solstice on June 21 and the Autumn Equinox on September 23. We have observed the ripening of Nature, and soon we will be gathering the harvest. But first, let’s be still for a moment. Notice how everything tends to slow down at this transition from July to August.

Sit or lay down at your favorite spot, the one that has at least a touch of Nature surrounding it. For those living in New York City, or other big cities, this may be a challenge, but Nature envelops us even in the man-made jungle. Step out of your cubicle. Seek out a lone tree on the block; go to the river moving past the concrete piers; notice the Sun and the clouds dancing in the sky. Take a break from work; it’s called a vacation. Vacate the tight environs, and spend time outdoors.

Yes, go ahead, allow yourself to follow a gentler pace. Soak in the Sun. Let the light and warmth transform your Soul. Abandon the hectic schedule, forced upon us by the materialistic, profit-driven Western civilization. Embrace a slower flow. Breathe in the Nature in all her sumptuousness. Ah, the abundance of August: brightness, heat and humidity, harvest. Spend time by yourself. And simply be. Expand to feel in unison with the Universe. Cherish the sense that you belong to the world of Spirit. Your physical body is the center of activities in the world of matter. Your spiritual essence is the periphery that embraces you, always. Summer is the season that offers all the ingredients to nourish the space between your physical core and spiritual expansiveness. Replenish this etheric bubble—your chi energy field—with the gifts of Light, Love, Life from the Source. Dance with the Summer stars. Meditate with the bright planets.

Later, we will come together to work and celebrate in our communities. Right now, let’s relax and merge with the Sun and Light. May the humid air feed the life-sustaining waters within you. May the hot sunrays penetrate the core of your being and melt away anything that is not of pure Love.

“Noetic is poetic,” sang Michael Reddy and Robert Schwarz at one of the conferences of the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS). Yes, I still believe in poetry and geometry.

Can we prove the existence of consciousness? The fine scientists at the Institute of Noetic Sciences continue to dare asking new questions from different perspectives and wider angles, breaking old dogmas and paradigms.

Can we explain how we connect? By cognitive engagement? Well, we are thinking creatures. Yet, we have barely begun moving away from the old reptilian brain of fight or flight towards the frontal lobe. This uniquely human part of the brain allows for higher level cognition that embraces creative activities and global community awareness, leading to deeds of compassion and cooperation among people.

In Smart Moves: Why Learning Is Not All in Your Head, Dr. Carla Hannaford brilliantly summarizes the neurological scientific research. Science shows that we need touch to develop, we need to move to learn, to grow into our genuine human potential. Cerebral activity of narrow thinking and lifeless speech is a dead end, leading to nowhere but death of self, body, nature, Earth.

“Earth is alive. We now have photographs of galaxies, yet, ancient cultures have known about them for ages,” echoes the voice of Drew Dillinger, one of the speakers at the IONS conference I attended several years ago. And we have probably all heard or read that a flutter of a butterfly can change the weather pattern on the other end of the world.

Rudolf Steiner writes that in the harmonious movement art of eurythmy, the body becomes the larynx, an instrument of higher consciousness. Yes, the larynx with a butterfly shape, a eurythmist with angelic wings. I speak with my silk clad limbs; I sing through the waves of my eurythmy veils. I am conscious as I connect with others through my movement. You and I, we move along, towards, through, past each other. Not just “dancing with” as in folk dance, or “dancing at” as in ballet, but consciously cultivating the aliveness among ourselves. Time and space are crafted into a magical opening where we can all glimpse our own true dreams, the dreams that we were born with, the path of humaneness that awaits our discovery.

Thus speaks the cosmic Word

that I, by grace through senses’ portals,

have led into my innermost soul:

Imbue your spirit depths

with my wide world horizons

to find in future time myself in you.

We are often washed up on distant spiritual shores, and abandoned on precarious emotional cliffs, alone. What happened to the ugly duckling’s parents, the two beautiful swans? Did they die? Did they lose their offspring by accident? Were they in pain and left the hapless creature behind in hope that some loving animal will find and nurture the sweet loveable thing?

Who will notice and love the tender Soul hiding in the dark corners of my inner chambers? Afraid and hurt, we tend to build such impenetrable walls around ourselves that no one can reach us. Not just that, we equip the barricades with dangerous weapons to injure and kill anyone who might come a touch too close: in hate or in love. Most of the time we don’t even know what is scarier: the wounds of unrequited love or the chronic inflammation of profound loneliness.

Beware: We hurt others the most when we ourselves are in pain. Suffering is a consequence of the state of victimhood. When we lose our inner balance, we become victims. Some remain in this mode; some defy it by adopting the behavior of the aggressor. How do we find the healthy equilibrium anew? By standing upright in full empathic awareness of me and you.

Compassion. Compassion and understanding are the only reliable companions that can help alleviate human suffering. If we have the strength to nod a welcome to their assistance. If we are conscious enough to notice them walking along us on the path.

Loving kindness towards ourselves, first and foremost, please. Oh, what a challenge this is for everyone! I mean, to live in the genuine sense of worthiness. Yes, I deserve a better life. Yes, I deserve to work in respectful and appreciative environment and get paid well. Yes, I deserve to live in a wonderful community. Yes, I deserve to enjoy an amazing intimate relationship. Never to the detriment of others, but always supporting and encouraging fellow human beings. Ah, the lost art of mindful communication. Thank you, Thich Nhat Hanh for the little booklet The Art of Communicating, full of much needed and practical advice.

If you think that you have already mastered the art of self-love, examine deeper. What about all the barely noticeable weaknesses and the almost forgotten mistakes that you have mindlessly swept under the pretty rug in your attic, perhaps even the rug right in the middle of a living room? Do you dare to look at the remnants with open eyes? Do you have the courage to pick up the relics of shame and embarrassment one by one, accept them, and gently clear them away? Can you forgive yourself for the suffering you caused?

And when others hurt you, out of their own pain, what do you do? Do you strike them back? Or perhaps you are able to say and mean the words of sincere empathy: “What you did really hurts me. But I’m trying to understand you. I know you are suffering too. I forgive you.”

No, none of this is easy, yet, it’s essential if we are to move on towards the true enlightenment of humanity.

We need to exit the draining paradigm of victims and aggressors; we need to carefully take off the old skin, lacerated with bleeding lesions and laced with scars from the wounds, inflicted by ourselves and others.

It’s time to leave behind the persistent ugly duckling syndrome.

In this the sun’s high hour it rests

with you to understand these words of wisdom:

Surrender to the beauty of the world,

be stirred with new-enlivened feeling;

the human I can lose itself

and find itself within the cosmic I.

How does a swan become a swan? Through the misery of mistaken identities, as we are told in the fairy tale The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen. Offspring of some animals enters the world looking ugly, or a very different version of their parents. Lipizzaner horses, for example, are born black, and they slowly lose their pigment as they grow into the signature white of this Slovene breed. There are no tales of a foal being troubled because of its different looks. The mare and the herd fully accept their young of dark color as their own, nurturing them into adulthood.

Growing into one’s highest potential doesn’t need to be full of misery and pain; it can be a loving process in a supporting community.

We, humans, have the luxury of free will. What are we choosing? The path of suffering and rejection, or a path of loving and caring? I invite you to let go of the old paradigm to create the breathing space to find the true potential in the highest “I”.

How do you get in touch with your Soul, the spiritual seed in you?

You’re more than your physical appearance and belongings. You’re more than your titles and station in society. You’re more than your beliefs and habits.

You may know what you aren’t. But how do you find out who you truly are? Perhaps what’s needed isn’t just to demolish the old structures, but also clear the lingering dust, debris, dross. Only then you can find the true Source, and notice that the Light within is part of the greater Cosmic Light. You can discern that in the Cosmic Light there’s your own unique column of Light, connecting your Soul to your Highest Self.

How do you nourish your Soul in your human heart?

Solstice, equinox? You mean those funny stone structures in England? Haven’t we delegated these strange practices to religion so that we can have more free days on Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and other holidays? Yet, the Manhattanhenge, or Manhattan Solstice, is becoming a new urban festival when the incessant traffic stops twice a year at sunset, and people stand in the middle of the Big Apple’s cross streets to capture the setting Sun on their electronic devices.

The more the über technological society tries to structure our lives into rigid boxes, the more we yearn for organic flow of nature. Hopefully, there’ll be some left when we finally wake up en masse. And we’re waking up! We, a human race in the curious experiment of merging divine and animal capacities.

Step out of the vicious circle to embrace your humanity, and nurture your highest potential. Tune into the breathing cycles of the Earth to find your own unique flow in life.

Every weekend, I take time to contemplate on the current Rudolf Steiner’s verse from his Calendar of the Soul, and digest it through my own life experiences and different spiritual practices. I add my sister’s original photo, and wrap my inspired verse and her image with the colors, informed by the insights from the harmonious movement art of eurythmy. Voilà, the weekly Soulful Sparks of Inspiration are born.

• Every Sunday, the weekly sparks – the inspired verse and my sister’s photo, introduced by my soulful thoughts about the theme of the week – are sent to subscribers by email, and published here on Substack under Soulful Sparks of Inspiration.

• You are invited to contemplate on these three parts of the sparks, as a whole and individually.

• Observe what insights well up in you. Sometimes it’s exciting, and you may be eager to share with others. At other times, you may feel vulnerable and want to linger in your solitude. Write and draw in your journals.

• Share your impressions with like-minded souls, if and when it feels right.

Initial Inspiration for Soulful Sparks

During my full-time training at Eurythmy Spring Valley (2010-2014), the whole school always gathered in a circle during the first morning session of the week. We started by reading a verse from the Rudolf Steiner’s Calendar of the Soul.

As I returned back home to Brooklyn after my graduation, I missed this lovely community practice, and began cultivating morning meditation on my own. But it is not the same without a group of like-minded souls.

How can we create at least a glimpse of a community even when we are not present in the same space? Nothing, of course, compares to the actual breathing presence of a group of people. Perhaps some soul-felt community may form if I share an image and few words, inspired by Steiner’s verse of the week, with friends and acquaintances online, a group of like-minded individuals.

I asked my sister Nataša Stubler, who lives in Slovenia, Europe, to read the verse for each week, and choose a photo from her wonderful collection that would capture a feeling of the verse as she interprets it. And I would write a few words as they emerge when I read Steiner’s verse of the week.
