When more than 100 of the world’s leading technology, cybersecurity and financial companies agree on a major threat, we’d better pay attention.

OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and dozens of other companies signed an open letter on August 27 warning that AI-powered cyberattacks are about to become far more widespread and sophisticated.

Their message is cold and blunt: “We have a limited window to strengthen cyber defenses.”

In addition, the letter called “on leaders across industry and government to bring the full weight of their technology, resources, and expertise to this effort.”

According to the letter, the danger is not confined to some distant technology company or government computer system.

It could reach the electric company that powers your home, the gas station where you fill your car and the local market where you buy groceries.

Hospitals, water-treatment plants and the infrastructure supporting the internet are all at risk. The companies warned that current security practices will not be enough as increasingly capable AI systems become available worldwide.

But what does all this mean for the average person?

I’d like to know, wouldn’t you?

The most immediate threat is that criminals, hostile governments and organized hacking groups will use AI to accelerate existing attacks, make them cheaper and more convincing, and carry them out more easily on a massive scale.

In practical terms, every criminal may soon have access to an automated team of researchers, programmers, impersonators and con artists that never sleeps.

Who better to ask what this threat could mean for families like yours than OpenAI itself?

So, I asked ChatGPT to translate the industry’s warning into plain language, explaining what it could mean for the average American and what families can do to protect themselves.

I hope you’ll find this plain-language explanation of OpenAI’s warning helpful.

The scam may know who you are

For years, most fraudulent emails and text messages were relatively easy to recognize. They contained misspellings, awkward language, strange greetings or requests that didn’t quite make sense.

AI can eliminate many of those warning signs.

Before contacting you, an AI system could search social media, public records, stolen databases and other online sources. It could learn the names of your relatives, where you work, which church you attend, where your children go to school and which companies you do business with.

It could then write a message specifically for you.

The fraudulent email may appear to come from your bank. The text message may mention your actual employer. The caller may know your child’s name. The request may arrive at exactly the moment when it seems most believable.

Instead of sending one poorly written message to a million people, criminals will be able to send a million individually tailored messages.

A familiar voice will no longer prove identity

One of the most frightening vulnerabilities is AI voice cloning.

A criminal may need only a short recording from a social-media video, podcast, church livestream or voicemail to imitate someone’s voice. A parent or grandparent could receive a call that sounds exactly like a son, daughter or grandchild saying:

“I’ve been in an accident.”

“I’ve been arrested.”

“Please don’t tell Mom and Dad.”

“I need you to send money right now.”

The voice may sound frightened. It may use familiar expressions. An AI system may even be able to carry on a conversation and answer questions in real time.

The FBI has already warned that criminals are using AI-generated voices and videos to impersonate family members, coworkers, business partners and public officials. The technology does not need to be perfect. It only needs to sound convincing during a moment of fear and confusion.

A face on a screen is no longer proof of identity. Neither is a familiar voice.

Your email account may be the doorway to everything else

An email account is often the master key to a person’s digital life. Once criminals obtain access, they can search years of private correspondence, identify financial relationships and request password resets for other services.

AI can help an attacker examine stolen messages quickly, identify valuable information and imitate the account owner’s writing style. Friends and relatives may then receive believable requests for money from the victim’s real email address.

People who reuse the same password on several websites will face even greater danger. Once one service is breached, automated systems can try those credentials elsewhere almost instantly.

You can be harmed without being personally hacked

Good personal security cannot protect someone from every danger because other organizations already possess enormous quantities of information about them.

A hospital, pharmacy, school, insurance company, employer, church, retailer or government agency may hold names, addresses, medical records, Social Security numbers, financial information or private communications.

If one of those organizations is penetrated, its customers, patients, employees or members can become victims even though they did nothing wrong.

The consequences may include identity theft, fraudulent accounts, medical-information exposure, blackmail or years of attempts to misuse personal information. A stolen password can be changed. A stolen Social Security number, medical history or facial image cannot be replaced so easily.

Everyday services could be interrupted

The open letter specifically warns about attacks against hospitals, water systems and internet infrastructure.

That raises the possibility of people suffering physical and financial consequences from attacks occurring far away from their own homes. A successful cyberattack could leave:

• Hospitals postponing surgeries or struggling to retrieve patient records

• Pharmacies unable to process prescriptions

• Local governments unable to provide ordinary services

• Water utilities operating under emergency conditions

• Banks or payment systems temporarily unavailable

• Businesses unable to operate or issue payroll

• Internet or communications services interrupted

An attacker does not have to steal money from your personal bank account to disrupt your life. Striking the systems on which an entire community depends can harm thousands of people at once.

Churches and small organizations may become easier targets

Large corporations can employ teams of cybersecurity specialists. Most churches, ministries, medical practices, family businesses and local charities cannot.

These organizations often possess donor information, employee records, banking access and private communications while relying on a small number of employees or volunteers. That combination can make them attractive targets.

AI could help criminals impersonate a pastor, board member, ministry president, bookkeeper or vendor. A convincing message might request an urgent wire transfer, a change in payroll information, the purchase of gift cards or access to a shared document.

Ransomware criminals could also attack smaller organizations in far greater numbers. What was once too time-consuming for a skilled hacking group may become profitable when AI agents can automate much of the search, intrusion and extortion process.

The elderly will face a particularly cruel threat

Older Americans are already targeted by grandchild scams, romance scams, government impersonation, fake technical support and fraudulent investment offers.

AI can make every one of these schemes more believable.

A scammer may appear in a live video call wearing the face of a trusted person. A fake investment presentation may feature a well-known public figure. A supposed government agent may know enough personal information to sound legitimate. A romance scammer may generate photographs, voice messages and video conversations for a person who does not exist.

The criminal’s chief weapon will remain the same: emotional pressure. Fear, affection, embarrassment and urgency are used to prevent the victim from stopping long enough to verify the story.

What families should do now

The warning is serious, but individuals are not helpless. Several precautions can make a family much harder to deceive or penetrate.

Create a private family verification word. Choose a word or short phrase that family members can use to establish their identity during an emergency. Do not publish it or use something that can be discovered through social media.

Verify urgent requests through a second channel. If someone calls asking for money or sensitive information, hang up and call that person using a number you already know. Do not use the telephone number, link or contact information supplied in the suspicious message.

Use a different password for every important account. A reputable password manager can create and store strong, unique passwords so that the theft of one password does not expose everything else.

Turn on multifactor authentication. Whenever possible, use an authenticator application, passkey or physical security key. Never give an authentication code to someone who contacts you.

Protect your email account first. Because email can be used to reset other passwords, give it the strongest password and authentication protection available.

Install security updates promptly. Turn on automatic updates for computers, phones, tablets, internet routers and connected household devices. Many successful attacks exploit vulnerabilities for which a security update already exists.

Maintain protected backups. Important family photographs, financial records and business files should be backed up somewhere that ransomware cannot easily reach.

Limit what strangers can learn online. Public posts about relatives, birthdays, schools, workplaces, vacations and daily routines give scammers material for more believable impersonations.

Slow down. Urgency is often the clearest warning sign. Banks, police officers, government agencies and legitimate businesses do not demand immediate payment through gift cards or cryptocurrency.

The nature of cybercrime is changing

AI does not need to invent an entirely new crime to create a national danger. It only needs to make familiar crimes nearly free to produce, personally tailored, continuously operating and available to people who previously lacked the technical ability to carry them out.

That is the central meaning of this industry warning.

The technology companies are not merely predicting an increase in annoying spam. They are warning that AI may fundamentally change the economics of cybercrime, allowing attackers to pursue more victims, exploit weaknesses more rapidly and produce deceptions that are increasingly difficult to distinguish from reality.

Americans should not panic, but they should adjust one deeply rooted assumption: seeing is no longer necessarily believing, and neither is hearing.

Before sending money, revealing private information or granting access to an account, stop and verify the request independently. In the emerging age of AI-enabled cybercrime, a few minutes of caution may be one of the strongest defenses an ordinary person possesses.

The cultural demand for allowing women in roles of priests and pastors is relentless.

Elite opinion treats the exclusivity of ordained ministry to men as an injustice that must cease. Progressive denominations have already surrendered. Media and academic voices frame any resistance as bigotry and hypocrisy.

The message is to adapt to the 21^st century or become irrelevant. Yet two major Christian bodies continue to refuse.

In June 2026 the Southern Baptist Convention, meeting in Orlando, advanced the “Truth and Unity” amendment by a roughly three-to-one margin. The measure, which still requires a second two-thirds vote in 2027, would bar any cooperating church from affirming, appointing, or endorsing a woman in the office or function of pastor, elder, or overseer, specifically including the act of preaching to the assembled congregation.

The amendment was proposed by R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville and one of the most influential conservative evangelical leaders of the past generation.

Mohler framed the issue as a dividing line between biblical and liberal evangelicalism. The messengers agreed.

The Roman Catholic Church has held the same ground far longer and under even greater sustained pressure.

In 1994, Pope John Paul II issued the apostolic letter Ordinatio Sacerdotalis, declaring that the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women and that this judgment is to be definitively held by all the faithful. That verdict has never been reversed.

More recently, the Petrocchi Commission reported in December 2025 that the historical and theological evidence rules out admitting women to the diaconate understood as a degree of the sacrament of Holy Orders. While further study was left open on the diaconate, the commission’s assessment was clear: the Church does not move in that direction.

Rome has expanded non-ordained leadership roles for women, but it has not rewritten the sacrament of orders to match the temper of the age.

These decisions rest on the conviction that the Church does not invent its offices.

Scripture and the long tradition of both East and West present the pastoral and priestly office in male terms, tied to the representation of Christ the Bridegroom and to the apostolic pattern.

To change that pattern under cultural pressure is not progress; it is a concession that the Church’s teaching authority is subordinate to the spirit of the times.

This is truly faith under fire.

Both the Southern Baptists and the Catholic Church face internal dissent, external scorn, and the steady drip of members and influence that prefer a more accommodating faith.

The broader culture treats male-only ordination as self-evidently unjust. Many younger Christians have absorbed that view. Yet these two institutions continue to maintain that the offices of the Church are not a matter of equal career opportunity or contemporary fairness metrics.

They are received, not redesigned.

The result is a form of Christianity that increasingly mirrors the surrounding culture’s assumptions about autonomy, identity, and power. When the Church no longer distinguishes itself on the ordering of its own ministry, it loses the capacity to speak with authority on anything else.

Contrast this with mainline Protestant bodies that long ago ordained women and then moved on to redefine marriage, sexuality, and even the meaning of the Cross itself no longer teaching “penal substitutionary atonement”.

Leading voices and institutions have described the classic Christian claim that Christ bore the penalty for human sin portrays God as violent or vengeful. In its place, the Cross is frequently reinterpreted as primarily a symbol of divine solidarity with the oppressed, an act of nonviolent resistance to empire, or a moral example of self-giving love, rather than an atoning sacrifice that satisfies divine justice.

This shift is documented across Episcopal, Presbyterian (PCUSA), ELCA Lutheran, and other mainline settings, where older language about the wrath of God being “satisfied” on the Cross has often been softened, avoided, or explicitly repudiated.

Some evangelical congregations have softened their language or simply gone silent on the question, calculating that clarity costs more than it is worth.

A growing number of “soft complementarian” churches affirm male eldership in principle yet treat the issue as secondary, rarely address it from the pulpit, and often permit women to hold pastoral titles or significant teaching roles.

Networks such as Acts 29, once clear in their complementarian distinctives, later muted public teaching on the subject and left decisions about women preaching to individual congregations.

Many non-denominational and seeker-sensitive megachurches follow a similar pattern, preferring alternative titles such as director, minister, or teaching lead, and avoiding firm doctrinal statements that might alienate members or draw cultural controversy.

Faith under fire includes clear refusals to let the culture dictate the terms of the Church’s offices.

In an age that demands conformity, that refusal itself is a form of witness. The Southern Baptists and the Catholics have chosen, at least on this point, to maintain their convictions no matter how unpopular.

A church that can no longer say hard things about its own order will soon find it cannot say hard things about sin, redemption, or the purpose of Jesus Christ’s suffering on the cross.

Last night, Prime Video provided a “trigger warning” at the opening of Reacher Season 4 that spoiled one of the show’s main features: It’s supposed to be a mystery series.

The episode began with a warning about suicide.

Moments later, Reacher was riding through Philadelphia on a nearly empty subway car after two in the morning. Near the end of the car sat an older Asian woman, sobbing, with both hands buried inside a blue bag.

Reacher began studying her. Something was wrong. Her clothes, her movements, the bag, and her nervous behavior suggested that she might be carrying a bomb.

Reacher did not know what was inside the bag. Bonnie and I did. The woman was not going to detonate a bomb. She was going to pull out a gun and kill herself.

Prime Video had already supplied the answer. The warning did not spare us the suicide. It merely spared us the suspense.

We have moved from giving parents information about what their children might see to giving adults caution about what they might see or hear. In doing so, trigger warnings can spoil stories, heighten anxiety, and quietly teach us that content can cause psychological danger.

Content Warnings Began in 1968

The American film-rating system began in 1968 with G, M, R, and X.

It was created principally to help parents decide what their children should see. The X rating originally meant adults only. It was not originally a pornography label, although it acquired that association later.

The warning was a parental guide: “This may not be suitable for your children.” But now warnings are mostly “triggers” labels for adults. “This may not be emotionally suitable for you.”

Modern trigger warnings are intended to help people prepare for or avoid material connected to their individual traumatic experiences. In contrast, traditional film ratings are intended to help parents judge age appropriateness.

The research record on the newer practice is not encouraging.

A 2024 meta-analysis of empirical studies found that warnings had no meaningful effect. They did not reduce distress once the content arrived. What they reliably did was increase the opposite. In short, the warnings often made people more anxious while they waited, but did not make the experience any less distressing.

Stories depend upon uncertainty. A creator controls what the audience knows and when the audience learns it. It’s good storytelling. But a specific warning can seize that control from the storyteller.

For instance: The opening scene of Reacher Season 4 was constructed around a question: What is inside the blue bag? A bomb? A weapon? Something harmless? Is Reacher correct? Is he profiling an innocent woman? Can he calm her down?

The writers carefully constructed a mystery around the woman’s behavior. The platform demolished it with a two-second warning.

I Want a Trigger Warning About Trigger Warnings

Was Amazon protecting us from the scene, or protecting itself from criticism for showing the scene? We can show you anything, provided we warn you first.

A society cannot organize all public communication around every individual’s most painful private experience.

Eventually the categories expand until ordinary human realities become hazards: death, grief, addiction, illness, childbirth, infertility, religion, war, bullying, smoking, weight, food, language, political beliefs, and virtually everything else that reminds someone of something painful.

The question is no longer “Should we be showing this?” It becomes “Did we properly warn people before showing it?”

But consider this problem with trigger warnings:

The same warning that tells one person to turn away may tell another person that this is exactly what he wants to see. “This episode contains suicide.” “This program depicts sexual violence.” “The following material includes domestic abuse.” “Viewer discretion is advised because of graphic violence.”

For the trauma survivor, that may be intended as a caution. For the ordinarily curious viewer, it may create suspense. For the sensation seeker, it may promise something shocking. For someone already drawn toward violent, sexually exploitative, or sadistic material, it may operate as a locator.

A trigger warning does not merely identify what someone may wish to avoid. It also identifies what someone else may wish to find.

Psychologists already recognize this phenomenon as the “forbidden-fruit effect.” Experiments have found that warning labels can increase interest in violent television programs, particularly when the labels sound authoritative or restrictive.

The warning becomes an unintended advertisement.

Scripture Pulls No Triggers

The Bible contains extraordinarily difficult material: murder, war, suicide, rape, betrayal, persecution, child sacrifice, famine, disease, demonic oppression, and execution. Scripture does not sanitize the human condition.

What it doesn’t contain are “trigger warnings.”

Why? Because Scripture does not present emotional discomfort as the greatest danger confronting humanity.

There are Biblical warnings, but they are different.

They warn people about sin, judgment, deception, temptation, suffering, and eternal consequences.

Their purpose is not to help people avoid every troubling feeling. Their purpose is to prepare people to face reality faithfully.

John 16:33 captures the distinction perfectly. Christ warns His disciples that they will experience tribulation, but He couples the warning with courage and hope because He has overcome the world.

Christianity does not promise us a trigger-free world. Christ promises something greater: that suffering, evil, grief, and death will not have the final word.

Across the United States, public school districts have adopted written protocols commonly called “gender support plans”. “These documents set out how staff will respond when a frequently confused and insecure adolescent is coerced or cajoled by adults and older students into a gender identity different from the student’s biological sex.

The plans routinely address preferred name, pronouns, bathroom and locker-room access, and clothing. In many districts, the same protocols instruct staff to withhold the information from parents unless the student consents. With significant encouragement from adults and peers, a student requests a new name and pronouns. Staff promptly begin using them at school.

At Baird Middle School in Ludlow, Massachusetts, during the 2020–21 school year an 11-year-old girl was socially transitioned at school.

School officials, including a counselor and a librarian who identified as nonbinary, held private meetings with her, provided pro-LGBT materials, and encouraged her to adopt a male name and nonbinary pronouns.

The student’s school Google account started receiving “unsolicited LGBTQ-themed video suggestions”. They continued this process even after the parents, who had already arranged private counseling for their daughter’s depression and gender questions, explicitly directed the school not to discuss the matter with her.

Staff used the new name and pronouns with the student while deliberately using her legal name and female pronouns when speaking with the parents.

The record shows active adult encouragement and facilitation by school personnel toward a vulnerable middle-school student, conducted against the parents’ stated wishes and without their knowledge. Official records and communications with parents continue to use the legal name and sex-based pronouns. Students often bring a change of clothes and alter their appearance after arriving at school, then reverse the change before returning home.

The school treats the entire arrangement as confidential.

This practice is not limited to Ludlow, Massachusetts. Districts in Wisconsin, Maryland, Michigan, California, and other states have operated under such policies.

In Madison, Wisconsin, the district’s guidance applied to children of any age and required staff to use one set of names and pronouns with the student while using another with the parents.

In Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, federal officials in 2026 opened enforcement actions under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) ^[1] after parents reported that schools had facilitated changes in presentation and pronouns without their knowledge.

When a student of one sex appears at school in the clothing of the other sex, the school affirms the presentation as part of the support plan. The same plan then treats that visible change as information that must be kept from the parents.

The result is a dual reality: one identity maintained among staff and peers, another maintained in the home.

Vincent Munster got stopped at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on January 25, 2026, with a package straight out of a horror movie.

He and research fellow Claude Kwe had just flown in from Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo, where an mpox outbreak was raging. Customs officers asked about the large black plastic case the pair was hauling. Munster and Kwe claimed it held nothing but “diagnostic and testing equipment.”

Agents opened it anyway.

Inside were 113 vials stuffed into Styrofoam coolers. By June 2, the FBI had tested twenty of them. Seventeen contained deactivated mpox virus. One held the chickenpox virus. Two contained only human DNA.

Court filings later stated that the tested samples did not propagate and were assessed as inactivated, meaning the materials examined were reportedly not capable of causing infection. That distinction matters.
