The idea is a seedling from my previous business.

There was one product we sold that consistently seemed to outperform most of the others. People loved it and that made me wonder if this one product could become a company of its own.

While owning and operating my first two businesses, I was also studying wisdom literature (divinity and theology) at university. During that time, I encountered the Law of Three, a framework associated with the mystic and teacher G. I. Gurdjieff and later interpreted by the contemplative teacher and author Cynthia Bourgeault. I will be drawing primarily from Bourgeault’s explanation of the framework and adapting it to the work of building an organization.

Most of us understand vision. Most of us also understand resistance. What is still being established, and what I believe will define the coming decades of entrepreneurship, is how to bring the vision and reality into relationship in a way that genuinely creates something new.

In this article, I am introducing the first wisdom principle I will use to begin exploring the idea for this company. The first wisdom principle states that...

Every new organization emerges through three interweaving forces: the initiating force, the resisting force, and the integrating force.

The initiating force is the idea: the possibility seeking form.

The resisting force is reality: in my case, uncertainty. I don’t yet know if this idea is truly viable.

The integrating force is responsible for bringing the idea and the potential consumer (reality) into relationship so that something new can emerge.

What I love most about these principles is their simplicity. Once you begin to recognize the three forces at work, the framework becomes remarkably useful wherever we encounter resistance.

The integrating force in this stage of the startup, the idea stage, is customer discovery. It will require me to loosen my attachment to a desired, particular outcome, and enter the consumer’s world, and allow what I learn to change the product itself.

My idea is incomplete without the consumer.

Over the past few months, I’ve been talking with a CPG advisor on what will become my third business. We’re still at the beginning, customer discovery, conversations, asking better questions and the two businesses I owned previously now feel like preparation for what’s ahead.

At the same time, for more than ten years, I’ve been exploring a set of wisdom principles around strategy, integration, and transformation. I’ve applied pieces of them across different organizations and projects, but never from day one of building something.

This startup will be the first complete, end-to-end use case.

I’m going to build this company in public and share what I’m learning along the way. The wins, the mistakes, the conversations, the strategic decisions, and how these wisdom principles hold up (or don’t) in the real world.

The Greeks had a word for this in-between space: mētis. Often translated as “shrewd” or “cunning wisdom.” In essence, mētis names the space between vision and action. It is the terrain we enter when unknown variables arise that have the power to disorient us. And when disoriented, our instinct is often to retreat or at least move through the awkward situation as quickly as possible while preserving a sense of competence and control. We accomplish this by falling back on familiar methods, inherited models, and well-worn strategies in an effort to execute our vision and keep things moving giving others the impression we know exactly what we are doing. The worst part: it makes us feel separated. Isolated in the moment.

But, this space is special.

It represents the soil that is to be tended. It offers us the chance to enrich the ground that will ultimately give life to the vision we carry. When we rush through this space without attuning to its depth and meaning, our efforts tend to come up short and we miss the vista that awaits us on the other side. Not because the vision was wrong, but because we failed to prepare the conditions that would allow it to grow in the face of the unexpected.

You know this feeling.

You walk into a meeting energized, having already imagined how the conversation will unfold. And then, almost immediately, you realize the room is not following the script in your head. Others bring perspectives, concerns, or resistance that you could not have predicted. Your heart starts to race. Your body tightens. Your thoughts scramble for control. The walls feel as though they are closing in, and suddenly all eyes are on you for direction.

Only, you’re not sure how to move the idea forward.

I recently had such an experience. Our visions, sooner or later, must be lived out in community, alongside others. This is the space the Greeks were pointing to with mētis. And there is a practice. One that, when engaged consistently over time, prepares us for these moments.

That practice is three-centered awareness.

At first glance, it may look and feel like meditation, but it is distinct in its purpose. Three-centered awareness focuses on bringing the three centers of the human person into alignment. When aligned, these centers give us the capacity to move through uncertainty with a wisdom marked not by past victories or a desire to control, but by precision and skill. In the event of unexpected situations, we will know exactly how to act and when to drive the situation forward.

When our bodies, minds, and hearts are working together, we act from wholeness. We become integrative leaders and are able to offer the moment exactly what it needs.

The three centers are:

• The head (intellect and rational thought)

• The heart (feeling and relational perception)

• The body (movement and sensation)

When these centers come into alignment, we operate from the fullest expression of our humanity.

If we don’t practice sensing our body, gauging our feelings, and paying attention to our thought life, we will walk into the world as a fragmented individual, unaware of our environment. It is one thing to emphasize one center in isolation of the others (i.e. spending time engaging our thoughts or only engaging our feelings) however, when we take up a regular and consistent practice of giving attention to all three of these centers we are better prepared to attune to these centers when the meeting begins or at the negotiating table when we need it.

Cynthia Bourgeault, who has studied and taught this work extensively, explains it through the insights of two master practitioners: Jean Gebser, the Swiss phenomenologist, and G. I. Gurdjieff, the architect of the Enneagram tradition.

She writes:

“….consciousness does not reside merely in the mental faculty alone (a misassumption made by nearly all phenomenologists, Gebser included), but rests on a tripod of three distinct systems of perception which he calls ‘intellectual center,’ ‘moving center,’ and ‘emotional center.’ The intellectual center is headquartered in the brain and is concerned mainly with the weighing, comparing, and strategic application of cognitive data. The moving center, dispersed throughout the body but centralized in the spine, is about ‘intelligence in motion’—perceiving the world through sensation, gesture, rhythm, and movement. The emotional center… perceives the world through empathetic resonance and/or emotional polarity.”

And further:

“In Gurdjieff’s take, in order to fully qualify as a ‘conscious human being,’ all three centers must be online and in communication with one another. Otherwise, one is technically asleep, no matter how passionately or eruditely any single center may be holding forth at any given moment.”

Without the practice of three-centered awareness, we are far more likely to default to older forms of strategizing, driven primarily by the mental/rational center alone. While this may occasionally bring a situation to a soft landing, it inevitably lacks the ability to place us onto new, creative, and innovative trajectories towards outcomes that we never thought possible simply by tethering us to what we already know.

However, Mētis is expansive enough to hold the tension of competing ideas or visions in a way that honors them while simultaneously moving us forward. It strengthens (this is the most crucial part) our relationships with one another and we learn more about who we are as leaders and what we value.

Spanning decades, philosophical and spiritual leaders have preserved a profound metaphysical system that describes how new things come into being and how they are sustained over time. Originally articulated by the Armenian philosopher G.I. Gurdjieff, this framework is often referred to as the Law of Three and the Law of Seven. My own introduction to this system came through Cynthia Bourgeault, a spiritual teacher and author whose book The Holy Trinity and the Law of Three reintroduces these ancient principles to the modern Christian contemplative. While Bourgeault’s aim is religious and theological, the underlying structure she illuminates transcends religious boundaries. It points to a universal pattern of creation — one that can be recognized and applied wherever process, change, or transformation are at work.

My goal is to unmoor this system from its religious setting in which I encountered it and bring it into the realm of organizational life, where it can serve as a tool for leaders and teams navigating complexity and change. Drawing on Bourgeault’s accessible articulation of Gurdjieff’s work, I aim to make this system clear and useful for executives who are working to generate innovation, move through impasse, and sustain creative momentum within their organizations.

In a field already crowded with leadership models and decision-making frameworks, the question naturally arises: is there anything here that truly adds something new? That, perhaps, is for us to discover. The Laws of World Creation and World Maintenance offer what might be called a missing grammar of transformation — a way of perceiving and engaging with process itself. They reveal why some initiatives thrive while others stall, and how leaders can move beyond polarization or stagnation to foster authentic forward movement.

My speculation is that once professionals and leaders encounter and learn to work with this tool, they will recognize that it introduces a long-missing dimension into the field — one that has remained hidden from organizational and leadership contexts until now and is emerging precisely at a point of necessity. Without the forces and principles illuminated in this system, few will be able to navigate — let alone lead — confidently into the new era that is rapidly unfolding before us.

The Law of Three: The Blueprint of Creation

Every creative act, whether personal or organizational, emerges through the interplay of three fundamental forces.

· The Initiating Force is the spark — the vision, idea, or impulse that sets something new in motion.

· The Resisting Force is the necessary counterweight — the tension, challenge, or limitation that meets the new initiative. Together, these two create the friction that defines every beginning. But transformation requires a third presence:

· the Integrating (or Reconciling) Force. This is the mediating energy that enters into the tension between the first two forces, harmonizing their opposition and giving rise to something new — something neither could have produced alone.

As Cynthia Bourgeault notes, “It’s not about paired opposites or creating balance; it’s about a threefold process.” This process is the underlying pattern of creation itself — the structure by which newness comes into being.

In organizational life, leaders readily recognize the first two forces. The initiating force appears as vision, innovation, or a new proposal. The resisting force shows up as constraints, competing priorities, or skepticism. Both are vital. Without resistance, there is no refinement; without initiation, there is no movement. The third force — the integrative or reconciling energy — is often the most difficult to see, yet it is the essential key to transformation. It cannot be forced but must be discerned and invited into the situation.

It is important to resist the temptation to assign moral value to these forces. Initiating is not “good,” and resisting is not “bad.” Each is co-equal and necessary. Only when all three forces are dynamically interwoven does genuine creation and forward momentum occur. When organizations find themselves at an impasse, the integrating force is almost always present — just hidden. The task of the wise leader is to learn to recognize it, make room for it, and allow it to do its reconciling work.

The Law of Seven: The Arc of Fulfillment

If the Law of Three describes how creation begins, the Law of Seven explains how it unfolds and matures. Every initiative, product, or organizational transformation progresses along a sevenfold trajectory — a rhythm of movement, pause, and renewal.

This law reveals that energy does not move in a straight line. Processes naturally lose momentum at predictable intervals, requiring renewed attention, fresh input, or a rebalancing of forces to stay on course. Leaders who understand this can anticipate these natural plateaus and interruptions rather than misinterpreting them as failure.

By learning to observe the pattern of seven, leaders and teams develop an instinct for timing — knowing when to push forward, when to pause, and when to adjust the rhythm of their work. In this way, the Law of Seven becomes a map of maintenance and sustainability, helping what is created to endure and evolve.

Eight Foundational Principles (The Law of Three, Bourgeault, 24-25).

1. Every new arising involves three forces: initiating, resisting, and integrating.

2. The interweaving of these forces produces a fourth — a new manifestation in a new dimension.

3. The roles of initiating, resisting, and integrating are fluid and must be discerned situationally.

4. The point of integration is always the site of new birth.

5. Not all triads generate transformation; only those dynamically aligned according to the Law of World Creation.

6. Solutions to impasse arise by learning to spot and mediate the integrating force, which is always present but often hidden.

7. Every new manifestation progresses along a sevenfold trajectory — the Law of World Maintenance — marking its stages of growth, adaptation, and completion.

8. Every new creation becomes the integrating (reconciling) force in a new trio.

It is in the integrating (reconciling) force that Wisdom always manifests. In fact, the integrating force is Wisdom.

Why It Matters for Leaders

The Law of World Creation and World Maintenance provides more than an abstract framework — it offers a way of seeing. It allows leaders and teams to recognize the hidden architecture of change itself: how tension becomes transformation, how ideas mature into reality, and how creation is sustained across time.

For leaders, this means cultivating the ability to discern forces at play within any process, to move skillfully through conflict toward genuine synthesis, and to maintain energy and alignment over the long arc of realization.

In a time when organizations are being asked to operate with greater creativity, depth, and consciousness, this system offers a powerful bridge between ancient wisdom and modern leadership — an invitation to participate consciously in the unfolding of creation itself.

AI still relies heavily on human interpretation and intervention. The question is: how can we ensure that human-led AI truly brings transformation to organizations rather than confusion or dependency? Not all AI is beneficial—or even necessary—for every organization. Companies must first understand what they hope to accomplish with AI. What kinds of models will best serve their goals? Where could processes be streamlined without losing the organization’s soul? In what areas has data become so layered and complex that it obscures insight instead of enabling it? AI is a powerful, reconciling force within our organizations but knowing very clearly the specific ways in which it can function as a reconciler and integrative powerhouse is paramount to its successful use and it requires the innate capacity of human discernment.

Beyond the technology, there’s a deeper human question: What qualities should we look for in candidates who will make those judgment calls—who can see both the immediate task and its place within the broader purpose of the organization?

Surprisingly, one promising answer may lie in disciplines often overlooked in the business and tech worlds: religion, theology, and philosophy. Or, to say it simply, the humanities. If there is going to be a growing emphasis on human-centered organizations and companies then it would seem a natural step to mine the humanities for prospective candidates. Sadly, as STEM and other related fields have grown over the years, cost cutting measures always come down on the humanities because their value isn’t as visible and as a result they become greatly diminished.

These fields train people to perceive not only what is happening, but how and why each event, decision, or system folds into a larger pattern. Those trained in these disciplines develop the capacity to discern meaning across time—how present actions shape future outcomes and how trajectories evolve toward fulfillment or maturation.

Some of the most impactful figures in human history were not scientists alone but philosophers. Deep, critical thinkers who placed societies on whole new trajectories. As someone shaped by theological study and a two-time business owner, I know the effects of this firsthand. Theological thinking isn’t merely about the past or the afterlife; it’s about envisioning possible futures and understanding how human desires fit within a larger, even divine, story of organizational becoming.

For instance, a letter to the Ephesians—one of the most theologically sophisticated texts of its time—envisions a future in chapter 1 verses 9-10, in which all things, seen and unseen, are united as one and this future is grounded in a Divine “wisdom and insight.” To say, the wisest approach a professional and leader can take, is one of unity and we are entering an age where wisdom, not data, will determine which organizations endure.

From that, we might reasonably infer that one of humanity’s deepest trajectories is toward oneness and when that concept is funneled through the narrow channels of industry we can confidently state that movements like Conscious Capitalism or stakeholder-oriented leadership reflect this same current: a growing recognition that wholeness, connection, and meaning are integral to progress but, not because it is an ethical aim alone but, because it is where we are heading and our organizations and teams are a part of the unfolding of creation itself.

Students of theology, philosophy, and religion spend years learning to navigate ambiguity—to dwell in the “gray areas” without rushing to easy answers. We learn to discern direction using our inner compass, to be patient in uncertainty, and to recognize that clarity often arises from the wilderness moments of exploration and doubt. Those are precisely the qualities today’s organizations need to navigate AI-driven change wisely.

During my residency at Emory University Hospital as a Spiritual Health Clinician, we were required to complete certification in Cognitively-Based Compassion Training (CBCT). Through this program, I learned that compassion isn’t just a feeling—it’s a capacity that can be intentionally and thoughtfully cultivated. In healthcare, this realization is vital; compassion directly shapes the quality of care, collaboration, and trust within high-pressure environments. What struck me most was how this principle extends far beyond medicine. The highest-performing teams and organizations don’t only excel in their technical expertise or industry knowledge—they also invest in cultivating the more abstract, human qualities that enable people to perform at their highest caliber.

The same is true for the future of work in the age of AI. As organizations integrate increasingly complex technologies, the qualities that will most determine success are not purely technical but deeply human—discernment, empathy, and moral imagination. Just as compassion can be trained and strengthened, so too can judgment. And just as healthcare recognized that no amount of technical brilliance can compensate for the absence of human connection, organizations will soon discover that no algorithm can replace the integrative wisdom of a well-formed mind, body, and spirit. All three of these components, when integrated, was often referred to as the heart in ancient Egyptian culture and the heart represented the highest level of intelligence a human could aspire to.

So if you’re a student of science or technology, consider pairing your studies with a minor—or even a double major—in philosophy (this includes Divinity) or theology. These fields cultivate the kind of reflective judgment and moral imagination that will be essential in shaping the human-AI relationship of the future.

The Conscious Capitalism movement has reshaped how leaders think about the role of business in society. Founded by John Mackey and Raj Sisodia, and advanced by thinkers like Fred Kofman, it promotes the integration of profit and purpose, challenging the long-held assumption that the two are in conflict. Thousands of executives, consultants, and organizations have embraced its programs. And with generational shifts in consumer expectations and preferences, its influence is likely to intensify, not fade.

Yet here lies the truth: since its breakthrough, Conscious Capitalism has been estranged from its true source: Wisdom.

(In the explicit sense).

At its core, Conscious Capitalism is a philosophy that calls companies to operate ethically while pursuing profit, placing service to all stakeholders, humanity, and creation at the forefront. Its character is deeply compassionate in recognizing the oneness and shared unity of all. Compassion, rightly understood, is not merely a personal virtue; it is the active, lived presence of Wisdom in the world. Wisdom is the headwaters of every compassionate act and conscious capitalism is what Wisdom looks like when it takes the form of specific industries and sectors.

Ancient Greek philosophy offers two words for wisdom: sophia and phronesis. The latter translates as “practical wisdom,” and much of the focus on wisdom in business and industry has centered around this pragmatic perspective. The University of Chicago even has a dedicated center for its study.

Yet underpinning practical wisdom is another form—Wisdom with a capital “W.” This Wisdom is metaphysical and divine, the headwaters of all creative activity and forward progression in the material world. It is this deeper Wisdom, largely unseen in organizational life, that I argue is essential.

Most leaders and professionals do not realize that Wisdom has an underlying architecture, a framework and pattern woven into creation itself. It is the same ordering principle that holds communities together and sustains the cosmos. The Armenian philosopher G.I. Gurdjieff named this universal pattern the “Law of World Creation and World Maintenance,” pointing to Wisdom’s role in generating and renewing life at every scale and Cynthia Bourgeault, author and world renowned retreat leader have done the work of introducing the inner-workings of this system to their respective audiences and now I want to take it and introduce executives and leaders to the system.

This framework has flown largely under the radar of the Conscious Capitalism movement. The very same law is symbolized in the enneagram, increasingly utilized as a regular part of team development. However, the enneagram was originally never intended as a personality-typing tool but as a symbol describing how new manifestations of life emerge and evolve toward maturation and fulfillment.

Across traditions, Wisdom has always been recognized as the force that brings life into existence: ordering communities, sustaining creation, and guiding human flourishing.

This is precisely what Conscious Capitalism aspires to embody. By aligning purpose, leadership, culture, and stakeholder relationships with its true source—Wisdom—it offers a powerful pathway for business leaders. When framed this way, even those resistant to “consciousness” as a concept can see how the movement supports not only profitability but also life-giving and sustainable growth. Recognizing and integrating Wisdom at its source gives Conscious Capitalism the capacity to shape the future of business and reach a far wider audience.

Raj Sisodia captures this well: “A business philosophy that blends prosperity with compassion—that’s what the future needs.” But here is the challenge: without explicit recognition of Wisdom as the source, the movement remains limited and fragile. Compassion is the active presence of Wisdom in the world. Detached from Wisdom, Conscious Capitalism risks becoming a diminished, or even a corrupted marketing gimmick. Compassion without Wisdom is not true compassion and conscious capitalism estranged from its source can become misapplied.

I was reminded of this in a conversation with the founder of a global leadership network. He described how deeply many CEOs and senior managers care about society’s progress and their own inner development as leaders. But he added something striking: many of these leaders—some known to take pilgrimages to meet the Dalai Lama or immerse themselves in spiritual practice—“are not looking for compassion, they are looking for Wisdom.” While anecdotal, this conversation underscored the latent potential in organizations once Wisdom is introduced as both a science and a skillset.

Consider the marketplace today. Research on Conscious Capitalism’s impact is still mixed, and large-scale data remains limited. Anchor companies like Patagonia, Whole Foods, and The Container Store have modeled its principles more fully, yet obstacles remain and the two I have observed from my own place are:

• Authentic stakeholder and leadership buy-in

• Credibly measuring impact

• Grasping executives and professionals perspectives of this movement

I have so much more to learn and I plan to do that by continuing to study and explore wisdom’s effects across teams and organizations and I am fully ready to concede that.

When Wisdom is intentionally engaged, consciousness naturally follows. Consciousness shapes business strategy, culture, and relationships, but it is most crucial in moments of decision-making, impasse, uncertainty, and high-stakes negotiation. Only an attuned and awakened leader can engage such moments from a place of Wisdom—and this is felt in forward momentum, fresh ideas, and expansive opportunity.

Conscious Capitalism is an expression of Wisdom, yet it has not fully recognized Wisdom as its source. To truly advance, the movement must return to Wisdom: the deep well that animates its vision and sustains its practice. Wisdom, I believe, is this era’s dominant competitive advantage.

Profit and impact are not dichotomies in this era; they are interdependent. As Cynthia Bourgeault writes, “what used to be seen as sainthood is now a pre-requisite and baseline for doing business” in the coming age. Unless organizations intentionally cultivate Wisdom, by investing in its principles and practices and making themselves familiar with the framework and science behind it, they risk pursuing an incomplete vision of impact, leaving them unprepared for the challenges ahead. But with Wisdom as its grounding source, Conscious Capitalism can move fully into the future, expanding into places it never knew existed.

The past few months have been an exciting whirlwind! I’ve been collaborating to create a dedicated space for the groundbreaking research that’s just beginning at Sophia Leadership Group (SLG).

The name Sophia comes from the Greek word for Wisdom—celebrated by thinkers from Plato to the Hellenistic sages as the enduring guiding presence in the world. Sophia represents transcendent insight, a divine form of understanding that sees the whole, bridging the physical world with the more subtle qualities of the Divine. In fact, for Plato, Sophia was the highest virtue, a bridge between the eternal Forms and human souls.

At SLG, our mission is to study how Wisdom shapes teams and organizations and to develop practical tools that help leaders and professionals ground their work in this enduring principle. When sought, Wisdom becomes a Divine companion to those who seek her.

Many leaders intuitively know that Wisdom is essential to organizational success and well-being but very few realize that there’s an underlying architecture to Wisdom. One of my favorite teachers, Cynthia Bourgeault, defines Wisdom as the science of transformation, and this is the understanding that currently guides our original research. Transformation is indispensable in our current moment and the tools and practices required for transformation are nestled within Wisdom. To experience genuine transformation, you must engage Wisdom. We are exploring how executives and professionals perceive of Wisdom in the workplace and how to effectively introduce them to this transformative system.

Nothing captures Wisdom’s impact more clearly than Proverbs 8:10–11:

Proverbs, a Hebrew text within the wisdom literature tradition, was compiled over centuries and drew deeply from Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern sources. Like its counterparts, it assumes that unseen, hidden forces shape our world, and that true value lies not in material gain but in one’s ability to attune to these forces. By wisdom kings reign, institutions endure, and humanity finds its way. By Wisdom chaotic, ambiguous, and even aggressive situations and circumstances shift towards balance, harmony, and peace.

Most of us know the great philosophical schools: Stoicism, Epicureanism, Platonism, but few realize that wisdom traditions predate them by more than a millennium.

• Egypt (c. 2400 BCE): The Instruction of Ptahhotep, humanity’s earliest known book, counsels humility, justice, and harmony with Ma’at, the principle of cosmic order.

• Mesopotamia (c. 1500–1000 BCE): Babylonian texts like the Counsels of Wisdom and the Babylonian Theodicy wrestled with justice, suffering, and the role of the gods.

• Israel (c. 1000–400 BCE): Hebrew Chokmah (“Wisdom”) found expression in Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes—works that wrestle with meaning, justice, and the limits of human understanding.

• Greece (c. 500 BCE onward): Philosophers like Heraclitus, Plato, and Aristotle developed schools of thought, while Jewish-Hellenistic writings such as The Wisdom of Solomon (1st c. BCE) named her Sophia.

• India & China (c. 800–300 BCE): The Upanishads, the Analects of Confucius, and the Dao De Jing of Laozi unfolded parallel wisdom traditions, exploring the self, society, and the cosmic order.

Oral traditions stretch back far earlier, but these writings mark humanity’s first systematic attempt to inscribe, preserve, and transmit Wisdom. Wisdom literature arose wherever civilizations confronted the same enduring questions:

• How should one live?

• How can society flourish?

• What is justice?

• How do we face suffering and mortality?

To confine this vast inheritance to rigid doctrine or attempt to impose a wisdom doctrinaire, is a betrayal of the fundamental nature of Wisdom. She belongs to no single tradition. Her voice is for all people, everywhere. Indeed, much of the world’s wisdom literature within Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and others transcends sectarian boundaries. Approached rightly, Wisdom opens space, reconciles difference, and guides creation toward harmony.

Preserved in schools, courts, and temples, these teachings trained leaders, shaped communities, and offered meaning amid uncertainty. Regions borrowed imagery and exchanged ideas, refining Wisdom’s role in creation. We see this most clearly in the pages of the Book of Proverbs. We would witness this same cross-cultural relationship in Plato’s work, Timaeus, which demonstrates the exchange of ideas between Greece and Egypt. This universality reminds us that wisdom is older than philosophy, older than doctrine, and older than any single religion. It is humanity’s shared attempt to live justly, to thrive together, and to find meaning amid the mysteries of existence. In this sense, wisdom is not the heritage of one people but the inheritance of all.

Wisdom is the great headwater from which every religious tradition and philosophical school flows. For leaders today, of companies, institutions, or communities, she remains indispensable. Without wisdom, one is merely a fool with a title.

And yet, as timeless as Wisdom is, she is not abstract. She requires practices, simple, accessible, but never easy, to be received. Meditation, in its many forms, is paramount. By cultivating stillness and reflection, meditation opens space for Wisdom to emerge. It reveals the true self and the reality of the world, so that we become forces of reconciliation rather than reactionary agents. Its benefits can be felt immediately, but over time they shape how we lead. Meditation is a way of leveraging the creative potential within a person and bringing it to the surface.

Alongside meditation, the sages turned to nature, not as spectators, but as participants in the community of creation. Where meditation anchors us in body and breath, time in creation connects us to the living world and attunes us to the hidden forces that shape our lives, often experienced as synchronicity. These practices, inner stillness and outward participation, remind us of our interdependence and remain as essential today as in the ancient world for those who seek to lead with Wisdom.

Making these texts and practices accessible is essential for leadership and it is an act of honoring Wisdom herself. To listen across cultures is to join the same expansive movement described in Proverbs 8: a life-giving, inclusive, and generative force at the heart of creation and it is how we can continue to engage Wisdom’s rich presence in our contemporary setting.

Without intentional reflection it is impossible to discern what is reality and what is illusion.

Mckinsey & Company just released an article titled Scaling the 21st Century Leadership Factory. In this article the authors highlight what will be required to nurture future leaders. You can read the full article here.

“Leading is more difficult now than ever before. Every hour brings CEOs and their teams a flood of new information… They must make decisions quickly and accurately—despite gaps in knowledge and under intense scrutiny.”

Indeed, the sheer volume of change, technological, environmental, and political, has made traditional leadership models insufficient and when no map exists, leaders become wayfinders.

The earliest navigators were associated with seafaring and were often referred to as “wayfinders.” It is also a term that would come to be associated with architecture as well. Anyone navigating complexities and charting a path forward takes on the position of a wayfinder. Our current moment is met more accurately with the term wayfinding, marked by ambiguity, uncertainty, and the need for adaptation.

The authors of the McKinsey article go on to say,

In the wake of extreme uncertainty, CEOs should take a step back and reflect on the leadership traits and capabilities that will define their own and others’ success in the future and embed these traits and capabilities into their organizations.

That’s much easier said than done. Identifying key traits is one thing. Embedding them across narrow industry channels is a much bigger undertaking, requiring time, discernment, and a series of honest, strategic conversations. In this context, leadership becomes less about control and more about orientation: knowing how to move forward even when the path isn’t clear.

Getting clear on values and the essence of our organizations and companies is a contemplative act. Contemplation, from its Latin root, means “with vision.” It’s in these deeper moments of reflection that the light breaks in and we begin to see our surroundings more clearly.

Five days before we were set to get on a plane to Europe for a 6-9 month European journey that was to serve multiple purposes, my husband was let go from his job of nearly four years. Suddenly, the means by which we were to accomplish much of what we had hoped vanished and we were swept up in a river of uncertainty.

Should we go? Should we stay? We decided to go. Plane tickets, monthly rental, passports, all of which were non-refundable.

That decision brought a shift we didn’t expect but deeply needed. It gave us a kind of spatial awareness, a refined sense of how to navigate life right from where we are in the moment. Looking back, who could imagine a better place to confront the complexities of life, in the face of uncertainty, than Porto, Portugal? The birthplace of deep-water navigation. Ancient maritime practices were innovated upon in Porto. Here, the ancients learned to cross unfamiliar seas and open new trade routes by aligning the stars above with the tools in their hands. The astrolabe, astronomy, and the science of shipbuilding, all brought together under the vision of Prince Henry the Navigator opening up new fields of possibility.

Henry’s motivation for deep-water navigation was served by a combination of interests and ambitions. Ours were too. Life in America was full of meaning. I have a job I love, family close by, a sense of rootedness. But after a job loss in September, our financial progress began to unravel. We’d been hearing about digital nomad opportunities in places like Portugal. Much of what we were reading aligned with our aspirations. The math made sense, if we were intentional, we could accomplish in 8 months what might take 2–3 years back home. It felt like a wise move.

But then our financial situation shifted again, and I was reminded: wisdom is situational. What seems wise in one season may need reinterpreting in the next. Wisdom doesn’t require abandoning the path all together, it invites a refined, revised vision, a more adaptive approach.

Over a month later, I’m reflecting from Nîmes, France. Answers haven’t arrived, not in the ways we initially hoped, but clarity and awareness have quietly filled the spaces that were left empty upon arriving in Porto. The need for certainty and knowing what was coming next was replaced and replenished with trusting. Trusting ourselves and trusting each other. When CEO’s and teams are given the space and guidance to do traverse their own inner-life and re-discover what they value most then they can learn to trust one another without needing to know exactly what the outcomes will look like.

Our time in Europe has given us the space to reflect on how we got to our present situation. Owning what is ours and releasing what was simply out of our control: job losses, political decisions, market shifts. We feel better prepared to confront our challenges and build a life shaped by what we value in an enduring, sustaining way that’s generative. Over different stages of life, especially when raising two children, sometimes the roadmap needs to be redrawn.

I’ve come to see that wisdom isn’t about firm answers. It’s about cultivating an inner compass, a guide shaped by experiences that wake us up to what matters most. Without those moments, our compass drifts, like it’s caught in a metaphorical Bermuda Triangle: spinning, stalled, or vanishing altogether. What we value deeply in one season of life, one stage of progression, may in another season not be so.

This is just as true for CEO’s and their teams as it was for our family. A wise strategic decision, financial or otherwise, can shift in a moment. When environments change as a result of decisions made that are outside of our control we can recognize that we are in a different environment and our compass needs to be recalibrated. The compass is revealed in these moments of disorientation but it doesn’t mean that we abandon the vision all-together but that we give the vision space to refine itself.

CEOs and their teams should be laser focused on developing next-generation leaders with the unique skills and capabilities to perform and thrive in challenging times and the playbook for this is pretty simple: reflect on how you got to where you are (institutional knowledge) and calibrate the organizational compass by understanding your teams and what they value. The values may be different from one team member to the next, but they will be your guide, a light on the dark path. After all, every vision has to be lived out among others.

Woven into nature is the living code for the manifestation and continual nurturing of all life. From the tiniest microorganism to the vast orchestration of galaxies, creation embodies the blueprint for every act of generativity and creative unfolding in the world.

Nature, eloquently and enduringly, speaks into the heart of organizational development and design, from vision and innovation to scaling and sustainability. Its patterns reveal how life initiates, grows, stabilizes, and evolves. Leaders who learn to listen can draw from this deep well of wisdom, translating natural principles into strategies that are not only effective, but regenerative and resilient over time.

Ancient sages and spiritual teachers found their deepest insights not in books or boardrooms, but by observing and dwelling within the community of creation. From the birds of the air to the currents of the sea, nature became their teacher—not merely as metaphor, but as model. It is from nature that wise guides, prophets, and leaders learned how to live well, govern justly, and adapt wisely.

Few organized entities are as elegantly structured or as profoundly generative as creation itself. Nature does not stagnate. It evolves, adapts, and renews. There is a continuity that lives in nature, from the ancient world up to the present moment, made visible in the rhythms of the seasons, the migration of animals, and the growth cycles of trees. In business and innovation, we often speak of new ideas as "seedlings," and for good reason: they carry within them a horizon of possibility. Like seeds, the smallest idea, when tended wisely, can become a forest, giving birth to new forms of life with its own capacity to continue to give life latent within.

Creation offers models and frameworks for the innovation that emerges from tension and interdependence. Nature is, in many ways, the original organizing principle (a product of wisdom itself), an ancient and living intelligence in which each part plays a role in the wholeness of the system dependent and interdependent all at once. The moon gets its light from the sun yet no one would mistake one for the other.

As a native of Western North Carolina, I grew up immersed in rivers and forests, where I developed an early and instinctive sense of awe at the grandeur of the natural world. I was captivated by creation’s quiet power, its rhythms of rebirth, renewal, and enduring sustainability. Years later, just down the road from my first business, ran one of those same rivers. I often found myself on its banks, conversing, calculating, reflecting, and strategizing my next moves. It became both sanctuary and sounding board. Creation is a living partner in the work of leadership and vision.

Time in nature sharpens the inner guide, the faculty of discernment. It attunes us to pattern recognition, to cycles and symmetries, to beginnings, middles, and ends. It heightens a leader’s capacity to perceive invisible dynamics at play within organizations, relationships, and markets. Just as a forest is more than its trees, an organization is more than its departments or quarterly goals. It is a living system, dependent on relationships, feedback loops, and long-term health.

Nature invites us into a relational worldview. A network of celestial bodies that move in rhythm to birth and sustain life on earth. In the same way, our companies and organizations are not isolated engines of production, they are part of a greater ecology of life with the capacity to transform economies and place communities an entirely new trajectories towards prosperity and fulfillment. Recognizing this allows leaders to align decisions not only with bottom lines but with what is life-giving, sustainable, and generative.

When we spend time immersed in the natural world, we’re not just unwinding, we’re perceiving, feeling, learning what makes organizations great. We are reconnecting to the deep logic and intelligence of life that moves us beyond our normal capacities for decision-making and strategy into one that has much to teach us about timing, restraint, risk, renewal, and aligned action. In an era of constant acceleration and information overload, nature offers the space to return to essence.

So if you're seeking better strategy, wiser decisions, or clarity, consider this: Go outside. Spend time in creation. Let the earth shape your thinking, your seeing, and your leading.

There are few invitations as clear or as urgent as this one. It doesn’t ask us to wait until we feel wise or ready. It doesn’t say, “Get control,” or “Get answers,” or even “Get “it” together,” It says: Get wisdom.

But how do we do that?
How do we get wisdom in a world overflowing with information but often devoid of a knowing that stretches beyond the human intellect and rational/logical mind in a way that doesn’t diminish or ignore these dimensions but that integrates them as critical components?

To “open the door to wisdom” is not to master something new, but to unlearn our insistence that we alone know the way forward. It is to recognize the quiet voice within and around us that speaks not in facts alone, but in insight.

This post is an exploration of what it means to open that door, what ancient traditions have taught, and what we must remember.

When we face decisions, crises, or challenges, we naturally look for wisdom. Yet most approaches focus on what  wisdom says, answers, rules, and prescriptions, rather than  how we clear a path for wisdom to emerge. Ancient sages remind us that wisdom is not simply a storehouse of facts; it is a living current that flows wherever certain inner conditions are met.

Proverbs 4:7, listed above, puts the priority starkly.  The Hebrew word often rendered “insight” literally means “inward seeing.” In other words, the way to wisdom lies through turning one’s attention inward, quieting the chatter and recognizing a deeper perception already present beneath the surface of thought.

Across centuries and cultures, seekers have experimented with many gateways to that inward seeing: silence, solitude in nature, pilgrimage, sacred chanting. Yet one practice stands out as the full-proof discipline for cultivating wisdom: meditation. This is captured beautifully in the Buddhist Dhammapada (28):

Here the text names meditation as both seed and soil. Regular contemplative practice “springs” wisdom to life, while its absence causes insight to wither. The “dual path of gain and loss” is a gentle warning: every day we either nurture clarity or drift toward confusion. Conducting ourselves so that “wisdom may increase” therefore means dedicating consistent time to sit, breathe, and let the mind settle, creating the inner spaciousness where true guidance can arise.

In short, wisdom is less a lightning bolt of answers than a cultivated atmosphere of clarity. Turning inward through meditation transforms our ordinary seeing into insight, opening the door for wisdom to enter every situation we face.

In a world where professionals and leaders must navigate unfamiliar terrain, the imperative to turn inward has never been stronger. Each new era exposes the limits of yesterday’s playbooks: well‑worn systems shake, and bolder paths must be charted. When external maps fail, the most reliable compass is an interior one. A divine endowment meant to guide us through the complexities and nuances of this life.

Yet most conversations about wisdom still fixate on what  wisdom says, answer lists and silver bullets, instead of  how  we prepare ourselves to receive it. The ancients insist that wisdom is not a cache of ready‑made solutions but a living clarity that emerges when certain inner conditions are met.

For leaders steering organizations through upheaval, that choice is decisive. Regular contemplative practice, five silent minutes between meetings, a dawn sit before email, a meditation at lunch, creates the interior atmosphere where authentic guidance can break through the noise.

Like steady, small deposits over time, these practices yield tremendous gains. The call to wisdom is not abstract. It is deeply practical. For professionals and leaders navigating rapidly changing landscapes, the ability to pause, to see clearly, and to act from insight rather than reactivity is no longer a luxury. It is essential.

Wisdom doesn’t emerge from urgency or overwhelm. It takes root in stillness. It grows in those who are willing to slow down enough to listen to the deeper knowing within. Practices like meditation, silence, and inward reflection are not just spiritual extras, they are leadership essentials for this era. In times when the path ahead is unclear, the most reliable direction doesn’t come from external models it comes from engaging the inner compass we were all give at birth, a compass that can be neglected and ignored as advances in technology threaten this mode of knowing.

So start where you are. A few minutes of quiet in the morning. A moment of reflection before a key decision. A commitment to noticing what’s stirring beneath the surface. These small practices are not small at all they are how the door opens. And once it does, wisdom doesn’t just guide you, it transforms how you lead, how you decide, and how you move through the world. Quietly, steadily, and with a clarity that we cannot obtain in any other way.

The world needs leaders and leaders need wisdom.

“I stand at the crossroads, where the two paths meet.” Proverbs 8:2

This verse out of the Book of Proverbs, an ancient Hebrew wisdom text, renders wisdom as active, public, and accessible, stationed precisely at those thresholds where decisions must be made and futures take shape. For leaders and negotiators alike, the crossroads is more than an intersection, it is every moment of tension, every fork in strategy, every conversation that could tip toward conflict or creativity.

Yet the greatest obstacle to meeting wisdom there is the ego’s quiet insistence that we can navigate on our own. When we rush ahead without pausing to seek Wisdom’s counsel, we tend to align with one side of a dilemma or the other, thinking they are the only possibilities for forward momentum to occur, collapsing into premature certainty. Wisdom’s invitation, by contrast, is not to choose a ready‑made path but to align with her perspective itself. In that posture, new and unexpected ways forward reveal themselves. Options invisible to closed eyes. Thus, the crossroads becomes less a place of indecision and more a realm of generative possibility, where guidance waits for those willing to listen.

I have one such story. Early in my career, as a young and enthusiastic businesswoman, I was presented with the opportunity to purchase the retail coffee shop I had been managing for two years. It felt like the next natural step. That evening, I shared the exciting news with a group of friends at a gathering. Among them was my friend Caroline, an experienced entrepreneur with far more business sense than I had at the time. Familiar with the shop’s history, she gently remarked, “Mary, you’d be the ninth owner in fifteen years.”

While I was thrilled by the prospect, Caroline’s comment was an invitation to pause and consider the deeper realities of the business. Her comment certainly hit a note within me but I believed I had done my due diligence. In hindsight, I see that I had aligned myself almost entirely with the terms presented by the other party, largely out of trust. This was simply the fallibility of human beings. A wisdom-based approach recognizes this: that we are not just rational actors, but fallible, emotional, hopeful, and often blinded by our own vision by ego.

In this case, my enthusiasm overrode my discernment. I pressed forward, convinced I could make it work. And for a while, I did. I increased sales by 17% in the first year. But it wasn’t enough. Two years later, we closed our doors.

You might think: if only I had listened to the embodied wisdom carried by Caroline that night, I would have walked away. But remember, wisdom doesn’t necessarily point to a single correct path. Rather, it invites integration. It offers a deeper lens, not to reject opportunity, but to engage it more creatively and responsibly.

Looking back, I wouldn’t have abandoned the opportunity altogether. Instead, I would have entered the negotiation differently, more grounded, more curious, and more willing to shape the terms with greater clarity and mutual benefit. That’s the difference wisdom makes: it doesn’t eliminate risk, but it transforms how we engage it and we are transformed in the process.

There are many different approaches to negotiation. Some professionals and leaders intuitively respond to negotiating settings with deep listening, presence, and an orientation toward mutual understanding. They tend to approach tension as something to be worked with, not against. Others, however, adopt a more aggressive stance, employing pressure, leverage, and force to achieve outcomes. While each style may yield results under certain conditions, the long-term impact and quality of those results can differ dramatically.

Aggressive negotiation tactics, often centered around domination, win/lose mentalities, or manufactured crisis, may produce short-term compliance or visibility. But they often leave behind a trail of damaged relationships, fractured trust, and cultures driven more by fear than by creativity or collaboration. These tactics are fundamentally oriented toward control and power, not connection.

One of the most public examples of this style is found in the negotiation approach of President Donald Trump. Known for his confrontational tactics, public shaming, strategic instability, and an almost theatrical use of threat, Trump’s method is often framed as strength. But from a wisdom perspective, it is something quite different. As Thomas Friedman observed, “Trump is the wrong answer to the right questions.” The questions many people are asking about economic insecurity, cultural change, and global instability are valid. But responding with aggression, oversimplification, or zero-sum logic only intensifies division. It shuts down the creative field rather than opening it.

From a wisdom standpoint, negotiation is not merely the art of compromise or clever persuasion. Wisdom is not passive. It does not avoid tension. Instead, it welcomes complexity and holds space for something new to emerge by creating clarity. It cuts through the noise and distraction and illuminates circumstances in a way that creates forward momentum.

Mark Young, President of Rational Games Inc., a social business dedicated to the practical use of play as a tool for win-win negotiations and conflict-resolution, recently addressed the deeper meaning of high-stakes negotiation in his article on the nature of what he calls “hollow negotiation.” He writes,

It’s not about dominating a room, bullying a counterpart, or claiming a quick win. True negotiation is about creating lasting value, understanding the interests underlying the positions, and building relationships founded on trust, empathy, and cooperation. Judged by those standards, the ‘art’ in Trump’s deals reveals itself as dangerously hollow.

Referencing the complexities of global strife, Young continues,

The principles laid open in Young’s article are a testament to the nature of the world’s ancient wisdom texts that echo across time. These are texts that transcend geography and generations, meeting us in the heart of contemporary conflict. These sages of old are not to be ignored but engaged with humility, curiosity, and a posture of learning remembering that we are not to simply make a 1:1 exchange as our environment is drastically different than those that accommodated the formation of these ancient texts. However, their insights allow for a more integrative and grounded approach to modern negotiation and show us not just what was done in similar situations but how wisdom is engaged and received.

In the Analects of Confucius, the noble person, or junzi, is described as one who "does not quarrel" and whose ideal society is governed not by argument but by decorum. The junzi practices li (ritual propriety) and ren (compassion), offer a vision of negotiation grounded in social harmony and mutual respect.

The Tao Te Ching speaks with paradoxical clarity: “The soft overcomes the hard” (Chapter 78). True strength, Laozi suggests, lies not in force but in flexibility, yielding, and attunement to flow. Elsewhere, he writes, “Do you want to improve the world? I don’t think it can be done. The world is sacred. You cannot improve it. If you tamper with it, you’ll ruin it.” (Chapter 29). Negotiation, from this vantage point, becomes an act of presence, patience, and strategic non-action (wu wei).

This is wisdom at work: the transformative capacity to meet hostility with graciousness and demonstrate a strength defined by compassion and restraint.

A powerful historical example is the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, negotiated by the Prophet Muhammad in 628 CE. Initially perceived as a loss by some of his companions, the treaty prioritized peace and long-term vision over immediate gains. It ultimately became a turning point for the expansion of Islam, demonstrating flexibility, trust, and divine timing. Wisdom doesn’t overpower opposition, it integrates it, meets it head on as an essential ingredient to the manifestation of new and fresh insights.

Aggressive negotiation may secure outcomes through force, but wisdom-based negotiation secures transformation through depth, presence, creative mediation, and strong relationships which outlasts any short-term, often monetary, gains. Developing a long-term asset base is dependent upon the interpersonal and crucial for future leverage.

In an era marked by polarization, complexity, and uncertainty, the need for wise negotiators has never been greater. We don’t just need more deals. We need better outcomes, ones that are durable, ethical, and relationally sound. And those outcomes require leaders who can hold space for tension without collapse, speak with clarity without domination, and co-create solutions that no single party could achieve alone.

Negotiation, at its highest level, is not a battleground. It is a crucible for transformation. And wisdom is the heat that makes that transformation possible.
