September 2026 - Life Rhythm Through Doshingaku

Some months invite us to move forward.

Others ask us to slow down, clear some space, or quietly prepare for what comes next.

In Doshingaku, we do not look at a month simply as “good” or “bad.” Instead, we ask a gentler and more useful question:

What kind of season am I in right now?

Just as nature moves through different seasons, our lives also move through recurring rhythms.

Knowing your current rhythm can help you work with your timing rather than constantly pushing against it.

Think of it a little like checking the weather.

A rainy forecast does not mean it will be a bad day. It simply helps you decide whether to bring an umbrella.

Doshingaku works in much the same way.

A Brief Introduction to Doshingaku

Doshingaku is a system of self-understanding that originated in Japan and is based on your date of birth.

It looks at both your natural tendencies and the changing rhythms that move through your life over time.

Each person has a Core Star, which represents a fundamental pattern in the way they think, respond, and move through the world.

Some of the star names in Doshingaku are also names of planets, but within Doshingaku, they are unique labels used specifically for this system.

Some words wound. Some words heal. And both can stay with us.

A word that once wounded me, and another that later gave me courage.

Beneath those two experiences, I found the same quiet truth.

Years ago, someone I deeply admired said something to me.

I imagine it was simply a passing remark, spoken without much thought.

But those words stayed with me for a long time.

To that person, they may have meant very little.

Perhaps they were forgotten almost as soon as they were spoken.

But for me, it was different.

It felt like a small stone dropped into a still lake.

Just a few words.

And yet the ripples continued long after the surface should have become quiet again.

I said nothing at the time.

I simply carried those words with me.

The other person may not even remember saying them.

And yet sometimes, we carry a sentence for years after the person who spoke it has already forgotten.

A word with its own weight

In Japan, there is an old idea called kotodama（言霊）, often translated as “the spirit of words.”

It reflects the belief that words carry something beyond their literal meaning.

They have weight.

They can change the atmosphere between people.

And they can remain in the heart long after they have been spoken.

Some words seem to enter us and refuse to leave.

But kotodama is not only about words that hurt.

Words can move in the other direction, too.

At a time when I was struggling to believe in myself, someone else said to me:

“You can do it.”

Such simple words.

And yet they stayed with me in a completely different way.

Little by little, they seemed to cast a different light on a place in me that had once been hurt.

Some words help us stand again.

Some soften something deep inside us.

And sometimes, they reach a place we did not even realize still needed healing.

What kotodama reminds me

Some words wound.

Some words heal.

And both can stay with us.

I do not think this means we should become afraid of speaking.

Perhaps it simply asks us to become a little more aware.

People who have felt the weight of words often become gentler with them.

Not because they are afraid of saying the wrong thing, but because they know, from experience, what a single sentence can do.

There is a difference between simply saying something and truly delivering it.

Words leave us easily.

But once they reach another person, they enter a life we cannot fully see.

I do not always get this right.

I still catch myself speaking too quickly sometimes.

But now, I notice it more.

And perhaps that noticing is part of the practice.

There is another side to kotodama, too.

It is not only about the words we give to others.

It is also about the words we quietly give ourselves.

The sentence we repeat when something goes wrong.

The way we speak to ourselves after failure.

The name we call ourselves when no one else is listening.

Those words have weight, too.

And those words can stay.

A small question to carry with you

Is there a word — someone else’s, or perhaps your own — that you are still quietly carrying?

You do not need to do anything with it today.

Just notice it.

Sometimes, simply noticing is where the ripples inside us begin to settle.

In recent years, the Japanese word Ikigai (生きがい) has traveled around the world and, interestingly, returned to Japan with renewed attention.

Abroad, Ikigai is often explained through the now-famous diagram of four overlapping circles:

• What you love.

• What you are good at.

• What the world needs.

• What you can be paid for.

At the center, we are told, is your Ikigai.

I find this fascinating.

When I first saw it, I thought, Ah, I see. I learned something from it too.

It made me realize how a word can travel across cultures, expand in meaning, and become organized into a framework that makes it easier to understand.

I think this framework can be a useful way to reflect on what gives our lives meaning.

But the Ikigai I have known growing up in Japan feels a little quieter.

I don’t think of Ikigai as something we solve like a puzzle until we arrive at one perfect answer.

Ikigai May Be Closer Than We Think

For a long time, I was drawn to a life and career that looked successful from the outside.

Building a career at large companies, taking on new challenges, and always reaching toward a more accomplished version of myself.

There was nothing wrong with that.

At that stage of my life, those things mattered to me.

But as I have grown older, something has shifted.

I care less about how my life looks from the outside, and more about how it actually feels to live it.

These days, many of the moments that feel meaningful to me are found in ordinary life.

Waking early and taking a morning walk before the day becomes noisy.

Sitting quietly with a cup of coffee/tea.

Living with the gentle fragrance of incense I love.

Putting my hands together in the morning, giving thanks to my ancestors, and feeling grateful for another day.

Nothing extraordinary has happened.

And yet, in those moments, I sometimes find myself thinking,

I love this time. I love this life.

Perhaps that, too, is Ikigai.

Living a Life That Feels Like Your Own

I used to think that Ikigai had to be something grand — a great purpose to devote your life to.

But now, I don’t think it needs to be anything quite so big.

Perhaps it is knowing what matters to you, living by your own inner compass, and finding richness in a simple life.

And what gives life meaning is different for each of us.

In Doshingaku（動心学）, which I study and practice, we believe that what gives us meaning and a sense of fulfillment is deeply connected to the natural patterns of thinking we are born with.

For one person, Ikigai may be helping others.

For another, it may be mastering something over many years.

For someone else, it may be creating beauty or continuing to learn throughout life.

There is no single right answer.

The Form Changes. The Essence Remains.

The form our Ikigai takes may change as we move through different stages of life.

Someone who finds meaning in helping others, for example, may express it through building a career when they are younger.

Later, it may become mentoring or supporting others.

And in a later season of life, it may take the form of passing their experience on to the next generation.

As life changes, the expression changes.

But perhaps the deeper thread has been there all along.

The form changes. The essence remains.

Life has seasons.

We change with them.

And our Ikigai, too, can take a different shape to suit the season we are in.

Perhaps You Are Already Living Your Ikigai

If you have ever looked at the four-circle diagram of Ikigai and thought,

I still don’t know what my Ikigai is,

perhaps you don’t need to search harder for the answer.

Instead, take a closer look at your ordinary day.

When do you feel most like yourself?

What is one small thing that makes you quietly think,

I’m glad this is part of my life.

Perhaps Ikigai is simply knowing what matters to you and allowing your life to reflect it naturally.

And perhaps that richness is not waiting somewhere extraordinary.

It may already be there, quietly, in the middle of an ordinary day.🌿

In Japanese, we have two words that I find especially interesting:

Kokoro (心) — often translated as heart or mind.
Tamashii (魂) — usually translated as soul.

But these English translations do not quite capture the full meaning.

Perhaps the difference between these two words offers another way to think about who we are beneath the many roles we play in life.

Kokoro — the part of us that moves

The Japanese word kokoro can refer to the heart, mind, emotions, thoughts, and intention.

Kokoro moves.

Our feelings change.
Our thoughts change.
Our desires change.

They are influenced by our experiences, relationships, circumstances, and the season of life we are moving through.

One day we feel confident.

Another day we question ourselves.

There is nothing wrong with this movement.

It is part of being human.

But Japanese thought also gives us another word.

Tamashii.

Tamashii — something deeper within us

Tamashii is usually translated as “soul.”

In Japanese, the word often appears when we speak about something deeply rooted in a person’s character or way of being.

For example:

• Yamato-damashii （大和魂）— the Japanese spirit.

• Shokunin-damashii （職人魂） — the spirit of the craftsman.

These expressions suggest something deeper than a passing emotion.

They point toward conviction, character, devotion, and an inner quality that remains even when circumstances change.

I like to think of kokoro as the part of us that responds to life, while tamashii points toward something quieter and more enduring within us.

Not something we need to invent.

Something we gradually come to recognize.

An old Japanese idea: Ichirei Shikon

Several years ago, while studying palmistry, mindfulness, and Eastern philosophy, I came across an old Japanese concept called Ichirei Shikon (一霊四魂) — literally, “one spirit, four souls.”

It is an old framework for thinking about human nature.

Within this idea are four different qualities:

• Courage — Ara-mitama (荒魂): courage and the strength to act.

• Wisdom — Kushi-mitama (奇魂): insight and deep understanding.

• Love — Saki-mitama (幸魂): care, compassion, and the ability to nurture.

• Harmony — Nigi-mitama (和魂): cooperation, connection, and the ability to create harmony.

Rather than seeing one quality as better than another, I find it more interesting to notice how differently these qualities appear in each of us.

Some people naturally move toward action.

Others create harmony.

Some nurture.

Others seek knowledge and understanding.

Perhaps our work is not to become someone else, but to understand what is already living within us.

Perhaps purpose is something we recognize

When I first wrote about this idea in Japanese several years ago, I was asking myself many questions.

What is my purpose?

What am I really meant to do?

For a long time, I looked outside myself for the answer.

I thought there must be one correct path, one particular role, or one clear definition of success.

I see it differently now.

Our roles change.

Our careers change.

Our circumstances change.

What matters to us at thirty may look very different at fifty or seventy.

But underneath those changing forms, certain qualities often remain.

The desire to create.

To care.

To teach.

To connect.

To understand.

To bring beauty into the world.

Perhaps purpose is not something we suddenly discover.

Perhaps it is something we gradually recognize.

And maybe living with purpose is less about finding the perfect title for our life and more about allowing our deeper nature to take form in whatever season we are in.

So when your kokoro feels unsettled, perhaps there is another question worth asking:

What has remained quietly true about me through all the different seasons of my life?

The answer may not arrive immediately.

That is all right.

Sometimes we simply need to listen a little more carefully to what has been quietly present within us all along. 🌿

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to experience zazen at a temple.

Although I am Japanese, it was my first time practicing seated Zen meditation.

Until then, I had often practiced meditation through yoga and guided visualization. Because of that, I assumed zazen would come naturally to me.

But it did not.

I found it much more difficult than I had expected.

The Meditation I Was Familiar With

The meditation I had experienced through yoga was often guided.

I would be invited to focus on my breath, expand my imagination, visualize light or nature, and feel connected to a greater source of life energy.

There was a sense of opening — of allowing energy to move and awakening something already living within me.

Even when the body was still, the inner experience felt expansive.

The Stillness of Zazen

Zazen felt very different.

There was no image to follow.

No light to visualize.

No energy to draw in.

No particular place to reach.

I was simply asked to sit.

To breathe.

To notice the thoughts that appeared, without holding on to them.

And to return, again and again, to the present moment.

The more I tried to become empty, the more thoughts appeared.

Memories. Plans. Small worries. Unfinished conversations.

It surprised me that doing “nothing” could feel so difficult.

From the outside, the two practices looked almost the same.

The spine was upright.

The legs were crossed.

The breath was calm.

The body was still.

And yet, inside, the meaning felt entirely different.

The Same Posture, a Different Worldview

This experience made me wonder whether the way we use the body can also reveal the way we understand life.

In zazen, the posture creates a stable container for stillness.

Rather than seeking something outside ourselves, we let go of what is unnecessary.

We do not try to add more.

We release.

We return.

The guided meditation I had experienced through yoga felt different.

It invited me to expand my awareness, connect with life energy, and awaken what was already within me.

That was when a simple image came to me.

Zen felt like subtraction.

The meditation I had experienced through yoga felt more like addition.

By “subtraction,” I do not mean that Zen is lacking something.

I mean releasing what is unnecessary — thoughts, attachments, expectations, and the constant desire to become something more.

By letting go, we return to what is already here.

And by “addition,” I do not mean simply adding something from outside ourselves.

The meditation I had experienced through yoga felt more like expansion and awakening — opening our awareness and allowing the life already within us to move more freely.

Perhaps one asks:

What can I release?

And the other:

What can I awaken?

Of course, both Zen and yoga contain many traditions, teachings, and interpretations.

This is not an attempt to define them completely.

It is simply a reflection on how these practices felt in my own body.

Different Paths, Shared Wisdom

Despite their differences, both practices seem to point toward something similar.

Both invite us to become more aware, to steady the body, quiet the mind, and return to a deeper relationship with ourselves.

And perhaps both ultimately lead us toward greater harmony with life and nature.

Different methods.

Different languages.

Different ways of understanding the body and mind.

What matters is not deciding which path is better.

It is learning to understand the differences, and to honor the wisdom within each one.

Perhaps when we do, our world becomes a little richer, more beautiful, and more expansive.

This reflection also reminds me of something I often explore through Doshingaku — the idea that each of us carries our own unique rhythm, timing, and season of life.

The Beauty That Grows from the Mud

Every summer, lotus flowers bloom quietly across Japan.

I have always been drawn to their beauty.

But over the years, I have come to realize that the most beautiful thing about the lotus is not the flower itself.

It is where it grows.

The lotus rises from deep mud.

Without the mud, there would be no lotus.

That has always felt like a quiet lesson about life.

A Few Words from a Buddhist Priest

Years ago, I went through a particularly difficult season.

My heart was heavy, and I found myself visiting a Buddhist temple to offer prayers for my ancestors.

As I was leaving, the chief priest gently shared a few words with me.

“Tsurai ne, tsurai ne, arigatō.” （つらいね、つらいね、ありがとう）　
“It’s painful, isn’t it? It’s painful… thank you.”

At first, I didn’t know how to receive those words.

Why would anyone say “thank you” to suffering?

With time, I began to understand.

The words were never asking me to be grateful for pain itself.

They were inviting me to acknowledge my pain without turning away from it.

Learning to Sit with What Is

In Zen and Japanese Buddhism, we are often encouraged not to fight every uncomfortable feeling or try to escape it immediately.

Instead, we return to the present moment.

We calm the mind.

We simply sit with what is.

Sometimes, that quiet acceptance becomes the beginning of healing.

Blooming Through the Mud

Perhaps that is why the lotus blooms from the mud.

It does not wait for perfect conditions.

It grows through them.

Looking back now, I can honestly say that some of the most painful moments of my life also became the seasons that transformed me the most.

Like the lotus, we do not bloom despite the mud.

Sometimes, we bloom because of it.

If you are walking through your own muddy season right now, I hope you will remember this gentle phrase from a Japanese temple.

“Tsurai ne, tsurai ne, arigatō.”

You do not have to pretend that everything is okay.

Simply acknowledging your pain may already be the first step toward blooming.

In my forties, I found myself facing a question I could no longer ignore:

Is this truly the life I wanted?

From the outside, my life may have looked successful and settled.

I had built a long international career, worked in several countries, and carried many responsibilities. I had learned how to meet expectations, make sensible choices, and create a life that looked good from the outside.

At the same time, challenges in my personal life were asking me to look more honestly at myself and at the life I had created.

Somewhere along the way, I had become more attentive to what was expected of me than to what I truly wanted.

Many of my choices had been shaped by what seemed respectable, secure, or successful — by how life should look — rather than by what felt deeply true to me.

This did not mean that the life I had built was wrong.

I was grateful for my career, my experiences, and everything they had taught me.

But I had reached an inner wall.

The values and expectations that had guided me for many years no longer seemed enough to guide the person I was becoming.

I began to realize that I was entering a period of transition: from living according to external expectations to learning how to live by my own inner compass.

There was no immediate answer.

Moving from an externally guided life to a more self-directed one was not a single decision. It became a long process of turning inward, questioning old assumptions, and learning to hear my own voice again.

Over several years, I explored journaling, palmistry, Doshingaku, and coaching.

Each offered me a different way to understand myself — my patterns, strengths, choices, timing, and the deeper rhythm of my life.

What began as a personal search gradually became part of my work.

Today, alongside my international career, I support others as a Life Design Palmist and Doshingaku Coach.

But before I began guiding others, I first needed a place to give shape to what I was learning.

That place was writing.

Writing as a Way of Understanding

About five years ago, I began sharing my reflections on note, a Japanese writing platform.

I wrote about life, work, self-understanding, palmistry, Doshingaku, and the quiet wisdom hidden in ordinary experiences.

Over time, I published more than 250 essays.

At first, writing was simply a way to put my thoughts into words.

But as I continued, it became something more.

Writing helped me notice what I truly believed.

It allowed me to connect experiences that had once seemed unrelated.

It gave language to feelings I had carried without fully understanding.

And sometimes, something I had written for myself quietly reached someone who needed those words too.

My writing never went viral.

But that was not why I continued.

I hoped my words might quietly reach the people who needed them, rather than trying to reach everyone all at once.

Then, one month ago, that quiet path began to open in an unexpected direction.

Sharing Japanese Wisdom Beyond Japan

The next step began with the publication of my first English book,
Unlock Your Unique Life Pattern: The Japanese Art of Life Design Through Doshingaku.

Over many years, through both my personal journey and my studies, I had come to value the Japanese spirit of Wa to Bi — harmony and beauty.

To me, wa（和） is the wisdom of living in harmony — with others, with nature, and with the season of life we are in.

Bi（美）is not only outward beauty. It is the beauty found in care, balance, simplicity, and the way we bring intention to everyday life.

I had also deepened my understanding of Japanese and Eastern wisdom, including Doshingaku, a Japanese system of self-understanding rooted in Eastern destiny studies.

Using one’s date of birth as a guide, Doshingaku offers insight into personal tendencies, life patterns, timing, and individual rhythm.

These ideas had helped me understand my own life more deeply.

They had taught me that life is not always about moving forward as quickly as possible.

There are times to act.

Times to pause.

Times to prepare quietly.

And times to begin again.

I wanted to share this wisdom with people beyond Japan — not as fortune-telling or a way to predict the future, but as a practical and thoughtful way to understand ourselves and the seasons of our lives.

Publishing my English book gave that wish a form.

And Substack gave me a place to continue the conversation.

So, one month ago, I began writing here.

I did not have a detailed plan.

I did not know how far my words would travel or who might find them.

But I knew what I wanted to share.

I wanted to offer quiet Japanese wisdom for modern life — through Wa to Bi, an awareness of life’s changing seasons, and the self-understanding that Doshingaku can offer.

I did not know where this new path would lead.

But I knew it was time to take the first step.

The Path That Began to Open

Then, the path began to open in ways I had not imagined.

Readers from different parts of the world began finding these letters.

They shared memories of Japan, stories of personal change, questions about life, and reflections from their own cultures.

Some told me that a sentence had stayed with them.

Others said that something I had written had reached them at a moment when they needed it.

Within one month, this quiet beginning grew into a warm and unexpected community.

What moves me most is the human connection within it.

A few quiet words written in Tokyo can travel far beyond the place where they began.

They can reach someone whose life may look completely different from mine and still touch something we both understand.

We begin writing from our own experiences.

But once our words are shared, they no longer belong only to us.

They meet the memories, questions, and hopes of another person.

Learning to Read the Season We Are In

This experience has reminded me of something I often return to in Doshingaku.

Our lives have their own patterns, seasons, and timing.

Doshingaku does not tell us exactly what will happen.

Instead, it can help us notice the rhythm we are in — when to move forward, when to pause, and when to prepare for what may be coming next.

It offers clues rather than fixed answers.

It does not make our decisions for us.

But it can help us understand why a certain season may feel different and how we might respond to it with greater awareness.

Sometimes, we are in a season of visible growth.

Sometimes, we are building roots that no one else can see.

Sometimes, we are being asked to wait.

And sometimes, a quiet feeling tells us that it is time to begin, even when we cannot yet see where that beginning will lead.

When I started writing on Substack, I did not have a complete plan.

I did not know whether anyone would read my words.

I did not know what kind of community might form here.

But something within me felt that the timing was right to take one step beyond what had already become familiar.

Perhaps One Step Is Enough

Many of us wait for certainty before beginning something important.

We want to know that the timing is right.

That the new direction will lead somewhere meaningful.

That someone will understand what we are trying to express.

But life rarely gives us the whole map in advance.

Sometimes, the path does not appear before we begin.

Sometimes, it reveals itself because we begin.

One month later, I find myself on a path I could not have imagined when I took that first step.

To everyone who has found me here, read my words, shared a reflection, or left a kind comment — thank you.

I am deeply grateful for the warmth you have shown me.

And among all the possible paths in this wide world, I am grateful that ours have crossed here.

Your own path may not be fully visible yet.

You may still be wondering where the next step will lead.

Before You Add More, Create Space

When we want to make life better, most of us ask the same question:

What should I add?

More learning.

More work.

More effort.

More connections.

More trying.

I know this pattern well because it was once mine.

For a long time, adding was my only strategy. If something felt wrong, I studied more, worked harder, and filled every empty hour.

My life was full — and yet, something still felt off.

What Ikebana Taught Me

For more than fifteen years, I have practiced Ikebana — the Japanese art of flower arrangement — in the Ikenobo tradition.

Here is what surprises many people:

The practice does not begin with adding flowers.

It often begins with removing leaves.

Beauty in Ikebana does not come from filling every space. What matters is where to place a single flower, where to let a branch reach, and where to leave nothing at all.

Because of that open space, one flower begins to speak.

In Japanese, we call this space yohaku（余白）.

It is often translated as “blank space,” but it is not blank at all.

How Life Quietly Fills Up

Life may work in much the same way.

Without noticing, our days can become filled with things that are not truly ours:

Someone else’s expectations.

Old definitions of success.

The desire to be recognized.

Roles we continue simply because we have always carried them.

These things rarely arrive loudly.

They enter quietly, little by little, and settle into the space where something more authentic might have grown.

Releasing Before Adding

Designing your life is not only about adding more.

Sometimes, it is about gently releasing what is no longer true for you.

A value that no longer fits.

A choice you keep making to gain someone’s approval.

A role that quietly exhausts you.

A relationship that asks you to make yourself smaller.

As you loosen your hold on these things, one by one, space begins to open.

Space for what truly matters.

I will be honest: this is not always easy for me.

Adding feels safe.

Removing can feel like losing.

Even now, I sometimes catch myself reaching for more when what I truly need is less.

Two Quiet Questions

Instead of immediately trying harder, I pause and ask myself:

What feels like too much in my life right now?

And what do I truly want to keep?

The answers do not always come quickly.

But the questions themselves begin to create space.

Yohaku Is Not Emptiness

Yohaku is not an empty place waiting to be filled.

It is a meaningful pause.

A place where you can hear yourself again.

A quiet space where the next version of you can begin to grow.

You do not have to fill that space immediately.

For a while, simply let it remain open.

And then, gently ask yourself:

What would I like to make space for — something that truly aligns with my values and the life I am here to live?

Perhaps the answer is already within you.

It may simply need a little more space to be heard.

A few weeks ago, I put everything I had into something.

I prepared carefully.
I showed up with sincerity.

And yet, the result I had hoped for simply did not come.

There was a time when this kind of moment would have unsettled my whole week.

I would replay it again and again.
I would question myself.
I would ask why, until the “why” became louder than the event itself.

I called it failure.

And because I called it failure, I treated it like one.

But these days, something has shifted.

Disappointment still arrives. And I will not pretend that it does not sting at first, because it does.

But beneath the sting, there is now a quieter place inside me.

A place that does not rush to judge.
A place that does not turn pain into self-blame.
A place that simply says:

Ah. So this is one of those times.

The practice that changed how I see it

Most evenings, before I go to sleep, I write a few lines in a small notebook.

I think of it as a small self-coaching journal.

Not a diary in the traditional sense, but a quiet conversation with myself.

What stung today?
What did I truly want underneath the wanting?
What might this moment, even the disappointing one, be trying to place in my hands?

The outcome did not arrive.
But I noticed what I had been quietly hoping for.

It did not go the way I had planned.
But I saw more clearly what mattered to me next.

It stung.
But the sting itself showed me how much I had cared.

And perhaps that, too, is a kind of truth.

Ne（根）— the root beneath what we can see

In Japanese, the word ne（根）means “root.”

It is the part of the plant we rarely admire.

We praise the flower.
We notice the color.
We are moved by what has bloomed.

But long before the flower appears, something quieter has been happening underground.

A root has been growing.

In Doshingaku, a Japanese approach to understanding life patterns and timing, we often look at life through the image of seasons.

There are times that feel like spring, when something new begins.
There are times that feel like summer, when our energy expands outward.
There are times that feel like autumn, when we receive, harvest, and reflect.

And then there is winter.

For a long time, I trusted spring, summer, and autumn much more than winter.

I trusted beginnings.
I trusted visible effort.
I trusted results I could point to and say, “See, something has changed.”

But winter asks for a different kind of trust.

Winter is not the absence of growth.

It is the season when the root grows out of sight, before anything is ready to be seen.

The unseen preparation

I often think of this when arranging flowers.

For more than fifteen years, I have studied Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, within the Ikenobo tradition.

Before a single stem is placed in water, that flower has already spent a long time becoming itself.

Before it is arranged beautifully in a vase, it has grown through soil, weather, darkness, and time.

No one applauds a root.

And yet, without the root, nothing can bloom.

This feels very close to how life often works.

Some efforts do not immediately become visible results.

Some sincere actions do not bring the response we hoped for.

Some seasons do not give us flowers.

But that does not always mean nothing is happening.

Sometimes, the work is moving downward first.

Deeper into the soil of who we are.

Preparing us for a future bloom we cannot yet see.

An honest confession

I would love to tell you that I have fully arrived at peace with disappointment.

I have not.

There are still days when I want the flower now.

There are still moments when I wish effort and outcome would hold hands more neatly.

But what has changed is not the sting.

What has changed is what I do with it afterward.

I try not to turn every closed door into a verdict on my worth.

I try not to confuse delay with denial.

I try not to forget that even when nothing seems to be blooming, something may still be taking root.

Perhaps this is one of the quiet lessons of ne（根）.

Not everything meaningful announces itself immediately.

Not all growth rises upward at first.

Some of the most important work begins in silence, beneath the surface, before the flower is ready to bloom.

Not every transition arrives loudly.

Sometimes it begins with one quiet question — the kind that keeps coming back, in the still moments of the day.

Is this still the life I want?

From the outside, everything looks the same. Work continues. Responsibilities remain. But inside, something has begun to shift.

Life doesn’t move in a straight line

Nature doesn’t bloom all year. The moon doesn’t stay full. Every season has its own purpose — even the quiet ones.

In Japan, we live close to the four seasons — and we have words for the feelings they carry.

The soft melancholy of mono no aware (物の哀れ).

The beauty found in imperfection, wabi-sabi (侘び寂び).

The awareness that nothing lasts, and that this is precisely what makes things beautiful.

Right now in Tokyo, we are in the middle of tsuyu (梅雨) — the rainy season. The hydrangeas are blooming in quiet corners of the city. The air is heavy and still. It is not a dramatic season. But there is a particular beauty in it, if you slow down enough to notice.

Cherry blossoms are beautiful not because they last — but because they don’t.

Winter is not a failure of spring. It’s a necessary rest before new life can come.

When I started seeing my own life this way, transitions became less frightening. Not something going wrong — just a new season beginning.

Learning to read your own timing

I came to Doshingaku because I kept feeling out of sync with myself. Not broken. Just... off.

Doshingaku is a Japanese-born approach to life design, rooted in Eastern philosophy — using your birth date to reveal your natural Thinking Pattern and the rhythms of your life — when to move, when to rest, when to begin something new.

What it gave me was simple: the understanding that each of us moves at our own rhythm. There are times to begin, times to deepen, times to wait.

When I didn’t know my own timing, I was hard on myself. I thought I was failing when I was actually just in a quieter season.

That shift in perspective changed a lot for me.

Beauty as alignment

I’ve studied Ikebana (池坊) for many years. One thing it taught me: a beautiful arrangement is not about adding more. It’s about listening — to the branch, to the space, to what wants to emerge.

A beautiful life feels the same way to me now.

Not more success, more speed, more recognition. But more alignment — between what I value, how I live, and who I actually am.

A question to sit with

If you’re in a season of transition right now — you don’t need to define it yet.

Maybe just ask:

What season am I in?

Japanese wisdom doesn’t give all the answers. But it offers a gentler way to ask the questions.

And sometimes, that’s enough to begin.

When I was a student, I practiced Kendo（剣道）.
As an adult, I began learning Kado（華道）, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, through the Ikenobo tradition.

It has now been more than fifteen years since I started Kado.

And yet, I do not say this out of humility — I truly feel that I am still only at the beginning.

In Japan, many traditional arts and practices carry the word “dō”(道）at the end.

Kendo.
Kado.
Sado, the way of tea.
Shodo, the way of calligraphy.
Judo.
Kyudo.

The word dō is often translated as “the way” or “the path.”

But it does not simply mean a method or a technique.

It carries the idea that a practice is not only about becoming skillful.
It is also about refining how we live.

How we stand.
How we breathe.
How we relate to others.
How we meet nature.
How we return to ourselves.

In Kado, especially in the Ikenobo tradition, there is a spirit called Wa to Bi — harmony and beauty.

For many years, I simply continued because I loved it.
Sometimes with clarity.
Sometimes with doubt.
Sometimes without fully knowing why.

But recently, something quietly shifted.

The spirit of Wa to Bi began to feel no longer like something I was learning from the outside, but something that had slowly taken root within me.

I realized that what I had continued for years was not separate from my values.

It was connected to them.

The way I wish to live.
The way I wish to work.
The way I wish to serve others.
The kind of beauty I want to bring into the world.

Perhaps this is what “dō” means.

Not arriving.
Not mastering.
Not proving.

But walking the path slowly, sincerely, and allowing the practice to shape the person we become.

After more than fifteen years, I feel as though I am finally standing at the entrance.

And somehow, that feels beautiful.

I look forward to continuing this path — quietly, humbly, and with joy. 🌿
