I was walking back to the car and something clicked about a post I’d been stuck on for two weeks. I pulled out my phone to type it. Someone honked. A kid ran past. By the time I got the keyboard open I had the shape of the thought but not the thought.

That happens to me a lot. It doesn’t happen when I talk.

Researchers at Stanford, the University of Washington, and Baidu tested this properly back in 2016. They put 32 people head to head against speech recognition on an iPhone keyboard. Speaking was three times faster than typing in English, with an error rate 20.4% lower.

Part 1: The mic aka the best Voice to text tools

1. The dictation on your phone

What it is: Your phone and laptop already do this. On iPhone it’s the little microphone on the keyboard. On Android it’s the same spot in Gboard. On Windows, press the Windows key and H together. On a Mac, it’s in System Settings under Keyboard.

Limitation: These tools type what you said. They don’t clean it up. Fine for a text. Not fine for anything you’ll reread, because you’ll spend the time you saved on editing.

Cost: $0. Already installed.

Start here. If free dictation covers what you need, you’re done and you can skip the rest of this section.

2. Wispr Flow

What it is: A key you hold down anywhere on your computer to talk into whatever app is open. Email, Slack, a doc, the search bar. It strips the ums, adds punctuation, and turns a rambling sentence into something you’d write.

Try this: Use it for one email you’ve been avoiding. Say the whole thing badly, in order, out loud. Read what lands. My experience is that about 80% of it is sendable and the other 20% takes ten seconds to fix.

Pro tip: Talk to it while walking with the screen off. The editing part of your brain interferes less when you can’t see the words appearing.

Limitation: Everything goes to their servers. There’s no offline mode at any price. If you work with client details, health information, or anything you’ve signed something about, read their privacy page before you install it.

Cost: Free gets you 2,000 words a week on Mac or Windows and 1,000 a week on iPhone. Android is unlimited right now as a promotion, which may not last. Pro is $15 a month, or $12 if you pay for the year.

3. Superwhisper

What it is: Same idea as Wispr Flow, with one difference that matters. The transcription can happen on your own machine. Your voice never leaves the laptop.

Try this: Download it, pick a local model, then turn off your wifi and dictate a paragraph.

Pro tip: It lets you set up different modes for different jobs, so you can have one that transcribes you word for word and another that rewrites you into clean email prose.

Limitation: The free tier only runs the small local models, and small models make more mistakes with names and jargon. Local processing also works much better on newer Apple Silicon Macs than on older machines.

Cost: Free tier with the small models. Pro is around $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year, or $249.99 once for lifetime. Check the site before you buy, since these move.

Part 2: Where the words land

Here’s the part most voice-to-text articles skip.

Getting the thought out of your head is step one. Step two is the words landing somewhere you’ll see them again. My Notes app has 340 items in it. That is not a system. It’s a graveyard with good handwriting.

If you ramble and don’t want to file anything: Saner.AI or Todoist ramble

Saner.AI is built for people who capture in a mess and don’t want to manually orangize it afterward. You record a voice note, it transcribes, and its assistant tags and files the thing without asking you where it goes. It can turn your brain dump into a structured task list. It also pulls in Gmail, Slack, and your calendar so tasks buried in email don’t need to be retyped.

Try this: Record one two-minute brain dump on your commute. Don’t need to organize it. Come back the next morning and ask it what you said you’d do.

Limitation: It also needs an internet connection for anything AI, so it’s not much use on a plane.

Other workaround: Todoist Ramble, record into Apple Notes or Google Keep, then once a week paste the transcripts into ChatGPT or Claude and ask it to pull out every commitment you made to yourself. Same outcome but a bit more friction

When talking is the wrong move

Voice is not always better, and the tools that sell it never say so.

• When you’re around people. Dictating a work email in a shared office makes everyone within ten feet a participant.

• When the thinking isn’t done. Speech is fast, which means you can produce 300 words of confident nonsense in two minutes. Typing is slow enough to think in. If I don’t know what I believe yet, talking just gets me a longer version of not knowing.

• When precision matters. Names, numbers, code, medical or legal terms. Every one of these tools will confidently give you the wrong spelling of a client’s surname.

But first, what make a good AI to do list app?

After some time, I think the best way is to list out a task journey and where I want AI to fix it:

1. Capture. The thought arrives while your hands are full. I want to capture the task as seamlessly as possible

2. Break down. The item’s on the list is too big and you read it daily without touching it. I want AI to break it down to smaller steps for me

3. Schedule. You knew what to do but can’t put it to the schedule, everything looks urgent. I want AI to suggest suitable slots for me

4. Resurface. You wrote it down perfectly somewhere you never looked again. I want AI to tell me what matters

With that, here are the apps that can solve at least 1 in 4 areas above exceptionally well.

🌶️ Goblin Tools — breakdown, and nothing else

Covers: Break down.

Paste a task that feels enormous into Magic ToDo, get steps.

The useful part is a spiciness slider. Chili peppers. It tells the tool how hard you find this thing, which has nothing to do with how hard it objectively is. Low spice turns “clean the kitchen” into five sensible steps. Max spice turns it into fifteen, down to picking up the sponge.

Sounds ridiculous but works, especially for ADHD

Two minutes, right now: open goblin.tools, paste the oldest thing on your list, set spiciness to maximum. Do step one. Close the tab.

Limitation: it hands you the list and walks off. No timer, no saved history, no one-step-at-a-time mode. Close the tab and the breakdown is gone, which is a strange miss in a tool built for people with working-memory problems. Copy the steps out first.

Cost: free on the web. No account, no ads, no paywall, and the About page says it stays that way. Phone apps are a few dollars, one time.

🗂️ Saner.AI — the one that touches all four

Covers: Capture, Break down, Schedule, Resurface

Saner puts notes, email, calendar, and tasks in one place and runs an assistant across all of it. Skai pulls tasks out of your brain dump and emails, builds a daily plan, and checks in with you.

Your first week: connect Gmail only, nothing else. Each morning read Skai’s plan before opening your inbox. When you want to capture tasks or reschedule something, just voice to the AI.

Prompt worth saving:

Go through my notes and emails from the last two weeks. Pull out anything that sounds like something I said I’d do. Ignore ideas and observations. I only want commitments I made to another person. List them shortest first.

Limitation: it’s young and it shows. The free

📥 Todoist — capture and resurface, done well

Around since 2007, 50 million users, and it connects to basically everything you already own, which is the quiet reason it keeps beating tools that are cleverer than it is. Least clever here. Most likely to still exist in 2031.

Two AI features, both recent. Ramble turns talking into structured tasks with dates and priorities. Ramble is the one that matters, because talking beats typing and works with a coffee in your hand.

Your first week: put it in position one on your home screen. For seven days, capture only — voice or typing, straight to Inbox, no project, no label.

Pro tip almost nobody uses: every project has its own email address. Forward a message there and it becomes a task with the email attached.

Limitation: Todoist organizes tasks and doesn’t do them. It won’t tell you what to work on this afternoon and can’t see your inbox unless you forward things yourself. Custom reminders are paid-only, which is odd in a reminder app.

Cost: free forever with 5 projects, 300 tasks each, one week of history, no AI. Pro is about $5/month annually or $7 monthly, adding 300 projects, custom reminders, calendar view, Task Assist, and unlimited Ramble. Rose from $4 in December 2025. Students get 50% off.

📅 Motion — scheduling, aggressively

Motion doesn’t ask what you want to do. It decides when. Give it a task, deadline, priority, and time estimate, and it finds the slot. When a meeting lands at 2pm and wrecks your afternoon, it rebuilds the week around it.

You open your calendar and the decision is already made. Mildly irritating for some people. For others it’s the only reason the day happens.

Your first week: Put in five things you actually owe a human, give each an honest duration, then add 50%. Set working hours narrower than feels right, because if you say 9 to 6 it will fill 9 to 6.

Limitation: It can’t see your email, so if your work arrives by inbox this changes nothing. One bad estimate cascades through the whole week. Plenty of users spend as much time overriding its choices as they saved. And the founders moved on to a different project and Motion hardly has any update.

Cost: the expensive one, and it keeps moving. Pro AI is $49 per seat monthly. No free plan; the 7-day trial takes a card and charges automatically unless you cancel.

Conclusion

So don’t waste time searching for more, choose one and just start.

1. 📚 Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM)

Name change happened three weeks ago. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on July 16, 2026. Same product, existing notebooks intact.

Best for: A project with lots of pdf files. A book you’re writing, a decision you’re researching, months of interview transcripts, your own archive when you want to interrogate it rather than add to it.

What it does well.

• Grounding. Every answer points back to the exact passage it came from, in a source you chose.

• The Studio panel turns those sources into other shapes: audio overviews, slide decks, flashcards, quizzes, mind maps, data tables.

Try this on your own notes. Export a year of notes from whatever app you use now. Drop them in one notebook. Then ask the question a folder can never answer:

What ideas do I keep returning to without noticing, and which of them did I never finish?

I ran this and it surfaced three fragments from three separate months that were obviously the same thought. I’d have never found them by searching, because I couldn’t have guessed the search term.

Limitations.

• Capture is the weak spot. Nobody dumps a shower thought into Gemini Notebook.

• It also goes stale the moment you stop uploading, so it works as a reading room rather than a home.

• And the audio overviews, fun as they are, come out in the same fixed two-host format on every tier, including the $99 one.

Cost. Free tier. Paid tiers ride inside Google’s AI subscriptions and mostly multiply those numbers. Plus dropped to $4.99 a month in June 2026; Pro is $19.99.

2. ✅ Saner.AI

Best for: People whose notes are full of things they promised to do. If your problem is “I can’t find it” and “I forgot it existed,” this is the different one on the list.

What it does well. Saner sits across notes, email, and calendar and pulls tasks out of them automatically. A line buried in a Tuesday note that says you’ll send someone a deck becomes a task instead of dying as text. Skai, the assistant, answers questions from your own material and puts a day brief in front of you in the morning rather than waiting to be asked.

Capture is one click from a Chrome extension or voice. Very little of the interface asks you to make a decision.

Try this. For one week, put every random thought there and nowhere else. Friday afternoon, ask it:

What did I write down this week that I said I’d do and haven’t?

Limitations. It only works if you commit. The free tier is tight.

Cost. From $8 a month on annual billing, with a higher Standard tier. Free plan available.

3. 🌊 Mem

Best for: People who capture constantly and file nothing. If your current system is 900 untitled notes in reverse chronological order, Mem was built for you specifically.

What it does well. No folders. No tag taxonomy. No decision at the moment of capture. You dump, and the AI links related things behind your back. Mem Chat answers questions from your own notes with attribution back to the source

Mem 2.0 landed in early 2026, which was the thing everyone complained about before.

Try this. Capture for two weeks without organizing anything. On the Friday of week two, ask it:

What have I written about more than twice this month that I didn’t realize was a pattern?

Limitations. Two real ones.

• The lack of manual control is liberating right up until the AI groups things oddly and you have no lever to fix it.

• And the free tier is not an evaluation, it’s a demo: 25 chats and 25 PDF pages a month runs out in a few days of honest use.

The bigger question is category pressure. Mem’s original pitch in 2020 was that AI should handle organization. That was a novel claim then. In 2026 every tool on this list makes it

Cost. Free tier as above. Pro is reported between $12 and $15 a month depending on billing terms, so check the live page before committing.

4. 🏗️ Notion AI

Best for: Structured work, multiple projects with shared context, and anything a second person needs to read.

What it does well. Ask Notion searches across your whole workspace and connected apps and answers with context that a plain note app can’t reach, because it also knows your databases, your project statuses, your meeting notes.

If you already live in Notion, this is the obvious answer and you can stop reading.

Try this. Point Ask Notion at a project database rather than a page:

Across everything in this project, what did we decide and never write down as a task?

Limitations. Capture friction is the killer. Every note starts with a decision about where it goes. That decision is exactly the moment an easily distracted brain gives up, and I’ve watched more people abandon Notion right there than at any other step.

And the pricing changed in a way that hurts solo users. Full AI now requires the Business plan at $20 per user per month. Free and Plus users get a capped trial of AI with no way to buy more. Custom Agents went metered in May 2026 at $10 per 1,000 credits on top of the seat price.

Cost. Free $0. Plus $10/user/month annually. Business $20/user/month annually, and that is the floor for real AI. Enterprise on request.

🎯 How to pick in 30 seconds

• You have a defined pile and want to interrogate it → Gemini Notebook. Start free today, it costs you nothing.

• You want to manage notes with tasks, calendar → Saner.

• You capture constantly and file never → Mem.

• You need structure, or someone else needs to read this → Notion AI, and only on Business.

⚠️ When none of these is the answer

• Your notes are fine and you just don’t reread them. No app fixes that. A recurring calendar block does, at least for the people who honor it.

• You want a meeting notetaker. Different category.

• You need your data local and private. Obsidian, still free, still plain Markdown on your own machine.

Last Tuesday I opened my laptop at 9am to send one email. One email. I closed the lid at 11:15 without sending it.

Then I sent it. It took nine minutes.

Nothing about those nine minutes was hard. The hard part was the two hours before them. Starting and doing are two different skills, and and with my ADHD, they are wildly unequal.

Most AI advice assumes you’re already at the desk with your hands moving. This post is for the part before that.

1. Make it name the first physical action 🔩

The Tactic: Ask what your hands do in the next sixty seconds.

“Finish the tax return” is not a task. It’s a gigantic project. The thing that actually unblocks me is a next action really small.

David Allen has been saying this since 2001 and I ignored it for years because doing the breakdown myself required the exact executive function I didn’t have. That’s the part AI solves.

Try This: Give it the stuck item, ask for the first physical action, then ask it to go smaller. Twice.

Prompt Template

Here’s what I’m avoiding: [task]. Tell me the single first physical action, something I could do in under two minutes without deciding anything. Then make it smaller. Then smaller again. No advice, no encouragement, just the action.

Limitation: If you’re avoiding the task because of dread rather than size, shrinking it does nothing. A two-minute step toward a conversation you’re scared of is still a step toward a conversation you’re scared of.

2. Let it interview you 🎤

The Tactic: Stop writing prompts. Answer questions instead.

Writing a good prompt is itself a writing task. So on the days I can’t write, I also can’t prompt, which is a stupid loop to be stuck in. The fix is to flip the direction: tell the model to interview you, one question at a time, and just answer out loud.

Try This: Start a voice conversation with ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and give it the interview instruction below. Walk around while you answer. Screen off.

Prompt Template

I need to produce [thing] but I can’t get started. Interview me. Ask one question at a time, wait for my answer, and don’t summarize or offer suggestions until I say stop. Start with the most basic question you’d ask someone who hadn’t explained anything yet.

Pro Tip: One question at a time is crucial. Without this and you get a numbered list of eight questions, which is a form, and forms are the thing I’m avoiding.

3. Convert the list into if-then 🔀

The Tactic: Rewrite your to-do list as triggers instead of intentions.

This is the one with the strongest research behind it and the one I dismissed longest, because it sounds like a productivity-blogger gimmick. Basically it means: “if situation Y happens, then I do X” . The 2006 meta-analysis pooled 94 independent tests and found a medium-to-large effect on whether people actually did the thing (d = 0.65). Not on motivation. On completion.

The reason it helps a brain like mine is that the cue does the remembering. “Call the clinic” requires me to spontaneously produce that thought at a moment when calling is possible, which is exhausted. “When I finish lunch, I call the clinic” hands the job to lunch.

Doing this by hand for a fifteen-item list is tedious, which is why I never did it. Pasting the list into an AI takes ten seconds.

Try This: Paste tomorrow’s list plus a rough shape of your day, and ask for cue-based versions.

Prompt Template

Here’s my task list: [paste]. Here’s roughly what my day looks like: [wake time, meetings, meals, commute]. Rewrite each task as an if-then plan in the form “When [specific thing that will definitely happen], I will [action].” Anchor to events that reliably occur, not to clock times. Flag anything you can’t find a good anchor for.

Limitation: It can fail badly on days with no predictable structure. If your schedule is chaos, there are no cues to hang anything on.

4. Get help in deciding what to start ☀️

The Tactic: Have the plan waiting before you’re awake enough to make one.

Sometimes I’m not stuck on a task. I’m stuck on the question of which task, and that question is itself a task, one that arrives first thing in the morning when I have the least available to spend on it. So I answer it by checking email instead, and the morning is gone.

Deciding costs something. Productivity gurus don’t tell you how to build a morning routine around the fact that the first decision of the day is the most expensive one you’ll make

The manual fix is to write tomorrow’s first three items tonight, before you close the laptop. It works. I do it maybe half the time lol

The automated fix is an assistant that reads your calendar, inbox and notes and hands you the plan without being asked. I use Saner.ai for this. What it does is scan your inbox, notes and calendar overnight and put a prioritized plan in front of you in the morning, plus check-ins through the day.

Try This: Tonight, write down the first three things for tomorrow in whatever app is already open. If you’ve done that for two weeks straight and it’s holding, you don’t need a tool. If you’ve done it twice, you need the thing that does it without you.

Based on what I’ve told you today, give me tomorrow’s first three tasks in order. Put the one I’m most likely to avoid first and tell me why you put it there. Nothing else. No schedule, no encouragement.

Pro Tip: Three items. Not five. A morning plan you can’t finish is just a new source of dread by 2pm.

What I’d actually do

If you only take one, take number 1. Naming the first physical action is free, works in every chatbot, and fixes the most common version of being stuck.

If you take two, add the number 4 and see whether it helps you start better than usual

I don’t run all five in a day. Most days I run none of them, because most days I just start. These are for the other days, and the whole point is that the other days stop costing you a morning.

AI is the first thing that stuck, but I wasted my first few months treating it like a smarter Google.

Here’s what I’d tell any fellow ADHD starting with AI today.

1. Stop asking for plans. Ask for the first physical action.

• A five-step plan is just another wall of text your brain will bounce off.

• “What’s the very simple small next step” is a question with an answer you can do in ten seconds.

• Starting is the whole game.

2. Your time estimates are fiction. Let AI call you on it.

• Time blindness means my brain plans every day in best-case-scenario mode: no traffic, no interruptions, and apparently no lunch.

• So now I paste my plan for the day and ask one question: “What am I underestimating here?” It catches the fantasy overestimate.

3. Brain dump first, do not keep it in your head

• I offload into my phone while walking, while something pops up mid task. Messy, half-finished thoughts, doesn’t matter.

• Then ask the AI to pull out hard deadlines, list what must happen today, dump everything else in a parking lot.

• You can do it in any AI you like. I personally use Saner because it turns the thoughts into tasks on calendar, which saves the manual clicking

4. Tell it to be brief, permanently.

• Long answers are where my focus goes to die.

• I put “keep responses short, no bullet-point essays” in my custom instructions once and never thought about it again.

5. Use AI as a translator between you and everyone else.

• A 2025 diary study followed adults with ADHD using ChatGPT in daily life. One of the biggest uses researchers found was translation: turning ADHD communication into what neurotypical colleagues expect, and decoding messages that felt loaded. I do this in both directions now.

• Before sending: "here's my rambling draft, cut it in half without losing the point."

• Before reacting: I paste the message that stung and ask "what is this person actually asking for?"

6. Ask for a decision, not options.

• Every open choice costs dopamine, and ADHD brains run a deficit by mid-afternoon. So I stopped asking AI “what are my options?” and started saying “pick one and tell me why in one line.”

• What to eat, which task first, how to reply to a tricky message. I can always veto its pick. But vetoing takes almost nothing, while choosing from five options can genuinely end my afternoon.

7. Sort your list by energy, not only importance.

• “Which of these can I do half-asleep, and which two need my best hours?” A priority-sorted list assumes a brain with stable output. Mine swings wildly between 9am and 2pm. Matching the task to the hour I’m actually in gets more done than any ranking by importance ever did.

8. Record every meeting. Your nodding means nothing.

• I will agree to three things in a meeting and remember zero by dinner. This isn’t carelessness, it’s working memory, and no amount of “I’ll remember this one” has ever worked. So everything gets transcribed now (Granola is the common pick, though most meeting apps have this built in).

• Afterward I ask one question: “What did I commit to?” That single prompt has saved more of my professional reputation than I’d like to admit.

9. When the answer feels perfect, check it.

• When I’m locked in and the AI hands me something clean and confident, I want to believe it and keep moving. That’s often when it’s wrong. These models still make things up, calmly and fluently.

• Two-minute verification before anything goes out with my name on it. Cheap insurance.

One honest note to end on. AI has genuinely changed how I work, but medication, sleep, exercise, and an actual clinician did the heavy lifting. AI just handles the friction those things can’t reach. It’s not a substitute for treatment.

Get the boring parts handled. Keep the thinking.

• Be brutally honest about the focus hours. I used to say 8 and mean 3. The plan only works if the number is real.

• “Tell me what to drop” is the part my ADHD brain can’t do alone. Everything feels equally urgent to me, so I outsource the ranking and just argue with the result.

• Run it again mid-day.

I watched a friend using chatGPT recently. He opened it, typed “write a follow up email,” copied whatever came out, pasted it into Gmail, sent it. Eight seconds, start to finish. Then he told me AI was “kind of overrated.”

He’s not wrong about his experience. He’s wrong about why.

So this is the post I wish someone had handed me when I started. No jargon. No “prompt engineering.” Just the handful of things that actually move you from the bottom 99% to the top 1%, none of which require you to understand a single thing about how the technology works.

1) You’re treating it like a vending machine

This is the root of almost everything.

Most people use AI like a vending machine. Insert question, receive answer, walk away. One transaction, done. And vending machines are fine for snacks, but you wouldn’t run your career out of one.

The people getting ahead treat AI like a new colleague. A sharp one, fast, a little overconfident, who happens to know nothing about your specific situation until you tell them. Everything good flows from this one shift in how you see it.

2) Context is the whole game

A vending-machine prompt looks like this:

“Write an email asking for a deadline extension.”

You’ll get something stiff and generic that sounds like a robot wearing a tie.

A better prompt looks like this:

“I need to ask my manager for one more week on the quarterly sales report. The real reason is two data sources still haven’t been approved by IT, which is genuinely out of my hands. My manager hates surprises and loves when people flag things early. Keep it short, don’t grovel, and make me sound on top of it, not behind.”

Same task. Completely different output. The second one is something you could actually send.

I use checklist now before I hit enter: who am I, what’s the situation, who’s on the other end, what do I actually want. If I’ve answered all four, the response is almost always usable.

You don’t need to be clever. You need to be specific.

3) The first answer is not necessarily the best answer

The first response AI gives you is a rough draft. Not the deliverable. A draft. Even when it looks good, it’s a draft. The people who are bad at this read the first answer and either accept it or give up. The people who are good at this treat it like the opening move in a conversation.

“Too formal, loosen it up.” “Cut this in half.” “Give me three versions of the opening line.” “That second paragraph is weak, fix just that.”

There’s no cost for us to asking again. No one’s annoyed. The AI doesn’t sigh. But most people quit after round one and leave the best version sitting there unused.

4) Argue with it

The most underrated move in all of this: stop asking AI to agree with you.

Most people use it as a confidence machine. They paste in their idea and ask “is this good?” and the AI, being agreeable by design, says yes and hands them a list of reasons they were right all along. That feels nice. It teaches you nothing.

I get more out of the opposite. “Tear this apart.” “What are the three biggest holes in this plan?” “If you were the most skeptical person in the room, what would you say?” “What am I missing that I can’t see?”

That’s the difference between using AI to move faster and using it to think better. One makes you quicker. The other makes you sharper. You want both, but almost nobody asks for the second one.

5) Hand it the work you’ve been avoiding

I started handing AI the things I was avoiding. The presentation I’d been dreading for two weeks. The messy spreadsheet I didn’t want to make sense of. The awkward message I didn’t know how to word. The decision I kept circling without ever deciding.

The blank page is the thing that kills most of us. Procrastination loves a blank page. AI is very, very good at killing blank pages. You still bring the judgment, you still edit, you still decide what’s actually right. But going from nothing to a rough something i the part AI eats for breakfast.

Bottom line

None of this is hard. The 99% aren’t behind because the technology is too complicated or because they’re not smart enough. They’re behind because they type one lazy sentence into a vending machine, get a mediocre snack, and decide the whole thing is overhyped.

Meanwhile a top performers are treating it like a colleague, giving it context, arguing with it, handing it the scary stuff, and pulling further ahead every single week.

The only thing different is the behavior, and behavior is the one thing you fully control.

Then I got a smartphone. Then short-form video. Then a job where I’m inside AI tools every single day.

The combination is well, not flattering.

Last year, a meta-analysis covering nearly 100,000 participants found that heavy short-form video use is tied directly to worse attention and weaker impulse control.

Oxford named “brain rot” its word of the year for 2024.

I think about my future when I read things like that. Will I just eventually become the dude in the Wall E movie?

So I’ve been making adjustments to avoid that future. Protect and Augment my brain.

1. Short-form content got one slot, not the whole day

Short clips are designed to reset your attention every 15 to 30 seconds. The platforms literally compete on this. Each clip has to be more instantly satisfying than the one before it, or you’re gone.

For someone with ADHD, it was training me to be useless at anything that required patience.

I noticed it gradually. Reading felt heavier than 5 years ago. Sitting with a hard problem went from uncomfortable to unbearable. That last one scared me.

What I started doing:

• I moved short-form video to a single window later in the day and stopped touching it in the morning entirely. I use an app called OneSec that adds a pause before any social platform opens. That one second of friction is enough for me to notice whether I’m opening the app with a reason or just reflexively. It’s almost always the second one. Usually I put the phone down.

Long-form became something I try to consume now. One book chapter, one podcast, one long video.

Good deep dive are almost never short.

2. I changed what I outsource to AI

I used AI in a way that was making my own thinking softer. I’d hand off the first draft, the structure, the core argument. The output looked coherent. I’d edit it. It felt like work. But it wasn’t.

The problem is that the first draft is where most of the thinking actually happens. That’s where you find out which of your ideas hold up when you try to articulate them and which ones collapse immediately. I was skipping all of that.

Just like when GPS became normal, people stopped building internal maps of cities they drove through regularly. Navigation worked fine, but the mental model never got built.

What I started doing:

• I write my raw thinking first, usually rough, and then bring AI in to find the gaps: where did the logic jump, what am I assuming without saying it, what counterargument am I ignoring?

• I try to use AI only for admin, maintenance tasks like scheduling, organizing. For executive dysfunction, the AI is really helpful. I personally use Saner for this case.

That change made my thinking sharper.

3. I got a lot more careful about whose opinion I let in

The tech and AI space is particularly bad for this. Every time a new model drops, a new wave of people immediately declare themselves experts (Twitter bros, I’m looking at you).

I fell for this more than I’d like to admit. A polished video felt like credibility. Confidence felt like expertise.

What I started doing:

• What has this person built, that I can look at, that took a while, and that didn’t always go right?

• Or at least, do I actually resonate with what this person is sharing.

The overall quality of what I was taking in went up once I stopped treating an audience size as a signal of whether someone knew what they were talking about.

4. I started protecting my boredom

Nowadays, every quiet moment used to get filled immediately. Phone in line at the coffee shop. Podcast while doing dishes. Something playing in the background while I cooked. I thought I was being efficient. But I was actually cutting off a cognitive process

When your brain has nothing specific to focus on, it doesn’t go idle. A set of regions called the default mode network switches on. This is where the brain makes unexpected connections, consolidates what it learned earlier in the day, and works through problems you weren’t consciously thinking about. It’s the system responsible for insight and creative thinking.

Research published in Molecular Psychiatry established a causal link between the default network and creative cognition, not just a correlation. The brain, when left alone, gets to work on the hard stuff.

What I started doing: I started leaving my phone in my pocket during short in-between moments. The commute, the queue, the few minutes before a meeting starts. No podcast on the walk, sometimes. Just nothing. Just staring at the wall

5. I picked up a pen again

I work in tech. Everything in my life is digital. The idea of writing something by hand felt like going back to using a fax machine lol.

But the research on this is solid:

A study published in Frontiers in Psychology used high-density EEG to measure brain activity in university students writing by hand versus typing the same words on a keyboard. Handwriting produced widespread connectivity across visual, motor, sensory, and memory regions simultaneously. Typing produced almost none of that.

What I started doing:

• I keep a physical notebook now. Not for everything, but for things I’m really trying to understand rather than just record. Ideas I’m working through. Arguments I’m testing. Problems I haven’t solved yet.

Wait, I’m not saying throw out your laptop. But there’s a reason some of the best thinking I’ve done in the last year happened on paper first.

The one motto to be smarter

The Greeks had a name for deliberate practice of hard things: askesis. Voluntary difficulty, done regularly, to build capacity.

I’m an AI native. I think these tools are useful. But there’s a the difference between using them to go further and using them to avoid going deep. That line is easy to blur when you’re not paying attention.

I’m trying to pay attention. And to not become one of those Wall E humans.

A few years of testing tools, and slowly figuring out what AI is actually good for. If I could save someone a year of that, here’s what I’d say.

1. AI makes you faster. That’s it. If you’re going in the wrong direction, faster just means you arrive at the wrong place sooner.

2. Your vague questions get vague answers. Put more into the prompt and you get more out. The prompt is crucial.

3. Context is everything. The more you explain your real situation, the better the output. Brief it like a contractor on their first week. For example: "I'm a non-technical manager explaining this to my directors"

4. The people most scared of AI are usually the ones who’ve used it the least. Form an opinion after you’ve actually tried it for a month.

5. AI sounds confident even when it’s wrong. Verify anything that matters.

6. Your taste is the filter. Without it, your AI output looks identical to everyone else’s. Taste is the actual differentiator now.

7. For ADHD brains: AI as a personal assistant is genuinely life-changing. It holds the context you keep losing.

8. AI amplifies what you already know. If you're an expert, you'll catch the errors. If you're not, you won't know what to verify. So, learn and be an expert first.

9. Tell AI what you don't want, not just what you do want. "Don't use bullet points. Don't be formal. Skip the disclaimer."

10. Having ten AI tools open is procrastination with a better excuse. Pick two. Actually try to use them for at least a week.

11. Opinion: Claude with Skills is the best way to use LLM right now for non-technical people

If I had five minutes with that version of me, this is what I’d say.

1. Don’t spend years getting good at something you hate. Years later AI will appear, skill without meaning is just a more sophisticated cage.

2. Most people confuse being busy with making progress. I did this for a long time. Very busy. Very stuck.

3. The people booing you have never been on the field.

4. Call someone important to you for no reason. Not to catch up. Not to ask for anything. Just to say you were thinking about them. Do it more than feels necessary.

5. If you can’t solve a problem, you’re probably still playing by rules someone else wrote.

6. The shame spiral after a missed deadline will cost you more time than the missed deadline did. Get up faster.

7. If you want to change what you do, change who you’re watching. You move toward whoever you compare yourself to.

8. Don’t lecture someone who needs a hug.

9. Working next to another person, even a stranger on a video call, will help you focus

10. What you choose to work on is more important than how many hours you put in. Effort without direction is just noise.

11. If something is out of sight, it doesn't exist for you. This isn't metaphorical. Stop hiding things in folders. Stop putting the guitar in the closet.

12. Your ADHD brain runs on interest and urgency, not importance. Stop trying to force motivation. Build external urgency instead.

13. You probably don’t have a discipline problem. You have a clarity problem. Figure out what you actually want and the rest gets easier.

14. Not giving up is genuinely the most underrated strategy alive. It sounds too simple to matter. It isn’t.

• The Karma gamification is small but it works. Finishing tasks on time feels slightly rewarding, which matters more than it sounds.

Cons:
