In 2024, UEFA made a choice which would change the outcome of the Europa League drastically. It completely removed the umbilical cord between UEFA’s Champions League and, previously, teams finding third in their UCL group would automatically parachute down into the Europa League. This mechanism allowed elite clubs navigating a poor campaign run or a ‘group of death’ the ability to still compete for a prestigious trophy. For a long time this spot was taken up by the likes of Juventus, Sevilla, Atlético Madrid and even Barcelona more recently.

This decision by UEFA has profoundly destabilised the ecosystem. In the decade prior to 2024, the presence of bigger clubs elevated the sporting quality and the global television appeal of the latter stages. Without these European heavyweights entering the mix in February, a huge continental power vacuum has emerged at the heart of the tournament.

This vacuum is not being filled by a diverse array of challengers but is instead being exploited by the overwhelming and unparalleled financial gravity of the English Premier League. The Premier League’s domestic and international broadcasting deals dwarf those around them, and their squad depth makes it incredibly difficult to compete against. Generating $4.5 billion annually in its broadcast revenue, the Premier League is in a different league, literally, from international rivals.

The Premier League Hegemony

Last season’s Europa League final, the first under the new format, included the 17th vs the 15th-placed sides in the Premier League. In no other league around the world could two clubs on the verge of relegation reach a European final, and this showcases the Premier League’s hegemony in Europe.

By insulating the Europa League from Champions League failures, UEFA has effectively removed the only genuine predators capable of hunting the English clubs. Across the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons, Premier League clubs have won all 19 of their knockout ties against continental opposition in the Europa and Conference Leagues.

Consequently, England’s dominance in the Europa and Conference Leagues has seen them, in the last two seasons, secure the fifth spot for guaranteed Champions League qualification. If Aston Villa win the UEL, which they’re overwhelming favourites for, and they finish fifth, the EPS will pass down the table, and sixth place will get a ticket to the UCL. Six sides in the UCL means the Europa League for another season will get the leftovers, or rather, Bournemouth, Brighton or Brentford.

Of course, for one of those teams it will be an amazing opportunity. However, the overwhelming majority of people will not turn on their TV for a Brentford Europa League game. Add to this the financial implications, and you’re left asking, ‘Why are UEFA doing this?’

For nations that have relied on deep Europa League runs to sustain their club revenues, the current landscape is incredibly hostile. The most obvious is Italian football, where this season marked the first time since the 1986-87 season that Italian clubs were completely shut out of the European semi-finals across all major continental competitions. The reaction from the Italian press regarding their World Cup exit went hand in hand with the club crisis, perfectly encapsulating the despair of the legacy leagues unable to compete with the English financial muscle. La Gazzetta dello Sport dedicated 16 pages of furious coverage to the collapse, with the headline “THE SHOCK” and declaring a “Third Apocalypse” for the nation’s football identity. The removal of the UCL drop-downs has exposed the economic inequalities of the sport, leaving historic clubs highly vulnerable to the financial power of the English top flight.

The Financial Architecture of Inequality

The Europa League’s total prize pool of €583.2 million, while nominally a 22% increase, pales in comparison to the Champions League’s astronomical €2.54 billion. These funds are meticulously distributed across three primary economic pillars, each designed to reward different facets of participation: Equal Shares (27.5%), Performance-Related Amounts (37.5%), and the highly controversial Value Pillar (35%). Amounting to €155 million, the Equal Shares pillar guarantees a base fee of €4.31 million for each of the 36 clubs qualifying for the league phase. Beyond this, UEFA allocates €212 million for sporting outcomes, where a league phase victory is worth €450,000 and a draw earns €150,000. Progression triggers escalating bonuses, from €1.75 million for the round of 16 to €7 million for reaching the final, with the ultimate winner securing an additional €6 million.

However, it is the Value Pillar that has drawn the fiercest criticism. Replacing the former “market pool” and “club coefficient” shares, this €198 million metric is split into European and non-European components. Distributed via an immensely complex system of 666 “shares”, a club’s ranking is determined by the value of their domestic broadcasting market and their historical five-year UEFA coefficient. This pillar is inherently structurally regressive. It systematically advantages clubs from the “Big Five” leagues, particularly England and Spain, where broadcasters pay premium prices, while heavily rewarding legacy clubs for past historical successes rather than current sporting successes.

The final payouts also reveal a shocking disparity, with a mid-table Premier League team reaching the quarter-finals being able to extract up to €25.5 million because of a massive Value Pillar ranking. In contrast, a domestic champion from a smaller nation reaching the exact same stage might earn less than €15 million. This system uses wealth transfer that is designed to protect the established elite and ensure that clubs from smaller markets can never fully bridge the financial divide through on-pitch success alone. This is the antithesis to how football should be.

Trapped between all of this is the harsh landscape of the competition’s current existence. When the UEFA Cup was rebranded to the Europa League in 2009, it was a highly prestigious trophy. The presence of UCL drop-downs ensured that the eventual winner had survived a test of continental elites. Finals featuring Manchester United, Atlético Madrid, Sevilla or Chelsea carried global weight and prestige. Today, however, that prestige has been completely deflated. The Europa League now increasingly resembles a slightly wealthier iteration of the Conference League, a tournament populated by mid-table sides from the top leagues battling for a trophy that is second-tier.

The introduction of the UEFA Conference League in 2021 further diluted the Europa League’s impact. The Conference League successfully captured the underdog dynamic, giving a platform for teams from smaller nations the chance to experience a European tournament. With the Conference League stealing this romantic narrative and the Champions League hoarding the elite superstars, the Europa League is left in a state without a real identity.

With UEFA preparing for the upcoming commercial and broadcasting rights for the 2027-2031 cycle, the governing body must confront the structural imbalances that threaten the prestige of the Europa League. UEFA should undoubtedly consider implementing the dropdown model again to reintroduce the highly competitive clashes, all while elevating the tournament’s pedigree. Last season, teams like Napoli, Villarreal, Ajax, Frankfurt and Marseille were all eliminated straight from the UCL, and there are not enough positives to outweigh the negatives for banishing these clubs completely. Abolishing or reforming the Value Pillar is another step UEFA must take to ensure that well-run clubs like those in the Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium are not financially penalised for simply existing outside the massive “Big Five” television markets.

Finally, the reality of a single nation holding up to nine or ten European spots is diluting the nature of these continental tournaments. If UEFA cannot establish much stricter and harder quotas for entry, the competition risks slowly mutating into a secondary English League Cup alongside a handful of continental guests.

The 2026 UEFA Europa League final in Istanbul is a story of Premier League wealth against a sustainable, community-rooted underdog from the Bundesliga, a stark contrast to the financial behemoths of the Premier League. If Aston Villa are to win on the 20th of May, it’ll be the first time since 1972-73 that English clubs have won the competition consecutively, and this likely will be the new norm under this format. Until that equilibrium is restored, the soul of the Europa League remains deeply and fundamentally contested.

On the 3rd of April, 1932, Real Madrid went to Barcelona’s Les Corts needing only a point on the final day, drew 2-2 and claimed their first league title in Barça’s backyard. Madrid’s 1932 triumph came in a season of 10 clubs, with Los Blancos finishing unbeaten on 28 points just ahead of Athletic Club and Barcelona on 24 points. 

That title came during a Barcelona decade shaped by political instability and crisis. The backdrop of the 1931-32 campaign was historically unprecedented across Spain, with the club’s broader cultural and social identity struggles reflected on the pitch. The Second Spanish Republic had been established a year prior, prompting the capital to be stripped of its royal patronage. Real Madrid travelled to Catalonia competing simply as ‘Madrid FC’, having removed the crown from their official crest. 

Despite the turbulent national politics, the football at Les Corts, as usual in El Clásico, was relentlessly dramatic. Madrid, guided at the helm by Hungarian manager Lippo Hertzka, twice took the lead through forwards Jaime Lazcano and Luis Regueiro. Barça, managed at the time by Englishman Jack Greenwell, refused to surrender to their rivals’ coronation, clawing themselves back into the tie. Club legend Josep Samitier equalised, and Ángel Arocha converted a late penalty to secure the 2-2 draw. 

Yet, that single point was all the visitors needed. Madrid FC claimed their first-ever Primera División championship on their own rivals’ soil, making them the original unbeaten side in Spanish football. Los Blancos completed the 18-game campaign without a single defeat, with the legendary goalkeeper Ricardo Zamora conceding just 15 goals all season to win the award that is now named after him.

Marriott, Crawford and Khan were at the heart of Altrincham’s early control, shutting Gateshead out of the middle and making it difficult for them to build through the centre. Supporters’ Player of the Year, Tylor Golden, nearly killed the game off in the 83rd minute, cutting inside his defender and forcing a spectacular fingertip save with a curling effort towards the top corner.

As the match fractured in the dying minutes, transitional play became increasingly careless. Substitute Jimmy Knowles, who had pressed tirelessly since coming on for Weaver, almost finished the contest when played through by Golden, but a heavy touch let him down.

The Georgian winger sprinted to the edge of the box, sized up the Bayern full-back one-on-one and unleashed a curling, clinical strike that bent perfectly past Neuer and went in from the inside of the post.

From nowhere, PSG had clawed one back with their first shot on target of the match, and this was a theme that would define the evening. PSG equalised with their first shot on target, and that ruthless efficiency defined the night: five shots on target, five goals.

As the game had relatively settled down, PSG won a corner in the 32nd minute. Dembélé wonderfully found PSG’s smallest man on the pitch. João Neves, who leapt perfectly, glancing a header onto the far side and beating Neuer at full stretch.

Throughout European leagues this would not be given, but due to UEFA’s strict rules regarding the handball rule, Sandro Schärer was instructed by the VAR to review the incident on the pitch-side monitor. The penalty was eventually awarded, and Dembélé stepped up and immaculately beat Neuer with power and restored the lead right on the cusp of halftime.

PSG, because of their heavy rotations and aggressive fullback positioning, left plenty of men out of possession when they lost the ball, making them vulnerable to counterattacks. Bayern, on the other hand, tried to make the pitch as small as possible to enable counter-pressing if they lost the ball. However, this naturally left a lot of space for transitions and isolations, making them look open on the break.

In the 55th minute, Bayern’s backline was completely out of sync, and Laimer was stepping up to mark Doué; however, Hakimi was bustling forward. Vitinha played a precise ball in behind for the on-running Hakimi, who reached the inside of the box, looked up, and delivered a ball into the middle. Dembélé, showing tremendous football IQ, dummied the ball and took three Bayern men out of play, and waiting for the ball at the end was Kvaratskhelia. Opening up his body, he sends Neuer the wrong way and scores his second of the evening.

Two minutes later, Ousmane Dembélé delivered a sequence of pure Ballon d’Or-winning pedigree. A rapid transition spearheaded by Doué laid the ball into the path of Dembélé on the edge of the box. The Ballon d’Or winner took a few measured touches forward and buried an immensely clinical curling finish into the bottom left corner off the post, leaving Neuer bewildered and not even able to dive for it. Two goals, one assist, and he made the previous goal. A standout performance, from the best player in world football – someone who never shies away from the big occasions and, instead, revels in the chaos of them.

Not even an hour had been played, and seven goals had been scored.

Despite being three goals down, Bayern are the best team in Europe for the most points won from losing positions, with 28, so, although strange, they were used to this environment. Three days before this game they had gone 3-0 down to Mainz and came back and won 4-3 with four goals in thirty minutes.

Bayern, just after the hour mark, had a deep free kick, and Kimmich whipped in a ball, and it went all the way in with the slightest touch from Upamecano. A lifeline from nowhere with Safonov completely misreading it, but nevertheless, it was exactly what Bayern needed to ensure this tie remained alive.

Three minutes later, after PSG had been dispossessed of the ball on the attack. Kane picked up the ball from deep and beautifully found Díaz in behind. A touch just behind him allowed him to get in a one-on-one position against Marquinhos. He faked his first shot, forcing the Brazilian to block, and then slightly moved the ball away from him and powered a ferocious shot into the top-right corner. The man who had breached the walls of Paris in November had coolly put Bayern right back into the tie.

For the last fifteen minutes, Pacho made a vital goal-line clearance, and PSG’s Senny Mayulu hit the crossbar. The drama had at last exhausted itself, and the referee’s whistle brought a breathless classic to a close. Both sides were incredibly ruthless in front of goal, with PSG scoring five from 1.90 xG and Bayern scoring four from 3.06 xG.

Kompany’s plea to the Bayern fans next week states, “We need 75k fans next week and an atmosphere like against Real Madrid, maybe even more.” Both sides know how pivotal this matchup is. So many, when this fixture was announced, wished it was the final, but that is almost like what it seems anyway; whoever wins this tie will be heavy favourites for European glory in Budapest.

The Bournemouth disaster a week before was the moment the title race truly began to unravel. 37 seconds later, Arsenal had equalised through an individual error but also through Arsenal’s high press. The ball agonisingly went across the goal line, and the fine margins had not gone Arsenal’s way.

In the 65th minute, the tension finally broke. The goal was the culmination of Martinelli’s press and O’Reilly’s surging attacking intent. Donnarumma, with a single throw, beat Arsenal’s press and allowed O’Reilly to progress forward without any resistance. Martinelli had drifted just a step too far out wide and opened up the space for O’Reilly to progress into. With this he was allowed to carry the ball to the Arsenal box before giving it to Doku. Doku, with a pass, beat Mosquera and Zubimendi, feeding it into the path of O’Reilly, who delivered a precise cutback across the face of the goal.

The move began with Trent playing a high-risk pass into Bellingham, who was surrounded by three Bayern players. Bellingham’s composure allowed him, with his back to goal, to slip a ball out wide to Valverde, beating three players, who then played in Arnold on the overlap, who found space. Reaching the edge of the box, the Englishman delivered a sensational ‘De Bruyne’-esque cross, powerfully evading the Bayern centre-backs and curling into the path of Kylian Mbappé.

Mbappé, with predatory instinct, ghosted to the far post and stabbed a left foot at the ball, and it glided into the fingertips of Manuel Neuer, who lifted it onto the underside of the crossbar. However, the force of the ball from Arnold meant all Mbappé had to do was redirect the ball, and the sheer power allowed it to ricochet downward off the crossbar and definitively cross the line.

Despite the goal, Madrid weren’t able to complete the comeback, and Bayern held out. Both teams matched 20 shots, with Real Madrid having 25 more touches in the opposition box than Bayern. Real Madrid grew into the game, and the introduction of Bellingham undoubtedly helped Los Blancos. If the finishing of Mbappé and Vini had been better, Madrid may have come out with a win. With Musiala also coming on in this match, returning from injury, the prospect of next week’s decider that will include both teams’ best available players promises to be compelling.

Overall, this match exposed the defensive vulnerability of full-backs whose attacking output is not matched by defensive security. This high-quality surface has allowed Gibson’s side to play with a technical fluidity at home that opponents struggle to contain. “Huge credit to the ground staff in terms of the effort that they put in,” Gibson noted post-match. “Pitches can look good from a distance, but they don’t play well. This has been a huge contributory factor... our home form has been really strong, and it’s in no short measure down to the playing surface.”

After falling behind, Southend increased their pressing intensity, forcing Altrincham into a deeper defensive block. Crucially, their strict man-marking system meant the wide midfielders were forced to track their runners all the way into the defensive line, effectively creating a back seven out of possession. This setup left space centrally, but whenever Southend tried to use it, they were immediately smothered and given no option to turn or create.

This meant that Southend completely abandoned the centre of the pitch and instead funnelled their attacks down the left wing. From the restart, Southend generated space on the overlap, and this was a pattern they repeated throughout. Left back Harry Boyes, who is joint-top for assists in the National League, was a constant threat all game on the overlap down the left-hand side. Reddin was asked to play at RWB, and he struggled to contain Boyes on many occasions with his bursting runs in behind.

Southend struggled to access the centre, but one route remained: James Golding, who showed incredible composure throughout the game. Dropping his shoulder to bypass the first line of press, he consistently opened up options. He was a thorn in Altrincham’s setup until he was taken off in the 78th minute, thereby denying Southend that route through the centre.

Even though Southend dominated possession after the 15th minute, Altrincham continued to have the best chances of the half with a memorable effort from Lucas Weaver, who attempted to chip the keeper but was denied by a save from Ndi. Altrincham went into the interval having played an excellent half but will have wished they’d got that second, whereas Southend needed to regroup.

Southend responded by pushing players forward, and their attacking shape resembled an ultra-aggressive 3-2-5. In stark contrast to the opening period, the first 15 minutes of the half belonged entirely to Southend. Altrincham had less than 30 seconds of possession in Southend’s box during the first 10 minutes, and everything the Robins tried to do was on the back foot.

Forced long by pressure, Altrincham completely abandoned trying to play out from the back, something they had done often in the first half. Every goal kick turned into a long ball, leaving Declan Howe isolated up top to chase loose balls and fight for fouls. The Shrimpers’ primary weapon remained the left flank, with natural right-winger Kian Reddin forced to sacrifice his attacking instincts to tuck into a rigid back five. Boyes took advantage of that fatigue and created Southend’s best chances.

Recognising that Reddin was exhausted and Southend were getting too much space on the left, Neil Gibson made a crucial change. Reddin came off, and Tylor Golden stepped into the RWB role to lockdown that side, often tripling up on the flank in the closing stages to neutralise the threat.

Amidst the chaos late on, captain Tom Crawford produced a game-saving last-ditch tackle following a Southend cutback chance. Then ten minutes later, Southend’s Jack Bridge capitalised on a lapse in marking on the right side following a corner and crossed the ball to the head of Dallas, who agonisingly headed wide from Southend’s best chance of the game.

Goalkeeper Hutchinson was unstoppable all game and saw the Robins through to the final whistle as they held on, securing a vital win against in-form opposition.

Southend will leave frustrated. Their lethargic opening half cost them the game, and while their eventual shift to a high-intensity press pinned Altrincham back, their finishing completely failed to match their second-half territorial dominance.

A trip to Boston United begins a demanding run of three away games in eight days, and that resilience will matter most.
