Jules waited until the bowls of tortilla soup were empty.

We’d been at the table for hours before she had turned her phone around.

A site she’d built. A collection of boutique grocers and artisanal products she’d been curating in private for months.

What she’d made was good.

Then she told me the rest. Someone else in town had already started importing one of the same products. All this gorgeous work with a plethora of an offering, and she was frustrated about that one product.

The belief says: if you didn’t get there first, you don’t get to go.

Look at it directly, and it falls apart. Almost nothing we love was the first version of itself. There were cameras before the one you own. A restaurant on your street before the one you go back to. Your bakery did not invent bread.

We picked up a rule somewhere that says the market pays out to whoever arrives first. It isn’t even true on its own terms. Researchers have gone looking for the first-mover advantage for decades. What they keep finding instead: pioneers fail at a high rate. Many of the brands we assume were first actually watched someone else go first, watched them fail, and built the version that worked. Early and right are not the same thing. Right takes longer.

What holds up is fit. Fit between the thing and the person who made it. Fit between the thing and the person it’s for.

Jules’s product exists because of years spent developing a specific sense of what’s worth offering. That sense doesn’t transfer. The person importing the same item does not have her “it”. The product carries whichever sense made it. Two people can start from the same object and end with two different offers, because the object was never the offer. The person was.

Potentially the fear runs the other way also. Not “is mine good enough.” Closer to: “Am I allowed to want the thing someone else already claimed?”

As if wanting were finite. As if only one person per town gets to care about a specific thing, and everyone else has to want something else.

Nobody owns the wanting.

Nobody stops making tortilla soup because somebody else already makes it. You keep making it, with your own recipe. That doesn’t touch whether yours is worth making. Whether yours is worth eating.

My friend sells the coffee machines other people buy to feel like a certain kind of person.

Chrome. Italian. The brand baristas mention like scripture. Founded almost a century ago in Florence by two brothers, its emblem borrowed from a Donatello statue rather than a marketing deck.

For decades it has powered someone else’s global coffee empire before stepping back into its own name. Every machine is still hand-assembled, not automated.

She’s worked the showroom for three years, pulling shots before the doors open, calibrating a new grind, starting her day the way I check my phone. I didn’t know any of that. What I knew was that she didn’t own one herself, and something in me decided that was a small tragedy. A woman surrounded by beauty and craft all day, going home to none of it.

So when she finally bought her own, I sent her a voice memo. Long. Unfiltered. I told her I was happy for her. I told her I’d carried a small grief on her behalf, imagining her without this thing I’d decided she deserved. I called it a beautiful piece of technology and art and craft. I meant it. I had decided, without her input, what her life was missing.

She responded with a gracious voice memo back and shared something that completely dismantled the premise of my grief.

“I have been using these machines daily, brewing my coffee, for three years, maybe a bit more,” she said. “I wasn’t suffering for not having it, because I felt I did in a way… I go to the showroom every day and begin by brewing my coffee, calibrating a new grain. All these years, I’d been getting knowledgeable about the machines, starting to love the brand, starting to understand the coffee itself. So now Max, it is a moment where I actually really, really get the value of these machines. I knew before, but now I feel it.”

She sells these machines to a lot of people who don’t know anything about coffee. “It also became a luxury brand,” she said, careful with the word. But there are some people, she told me, who really make an effort to understand the value before they buy. That’s what she feels she is, now.

Status buys the object. Understanding buys the relationship. One person wants to be seen holding the machine. The other wants to be changed by using it. On a counter, both purchases look identical, only the person living inside the purchase knows which one they made.

She is Italian, in Mexico City, and I don’t think that detail is incidental. What she described to me, coffee as daily and unhurried rather than staged, expertise built through repetition rather than bought off a shelf, is Dolce Vita in its original grammar. She wasn’t performing a lifestyle. She’d been living one for three years before she ever owned the object people assume comes first.

My father died in 2017. He used to tell me that people don’t always understand the value of a thing. It isn’t the access they’re missing. It’s the time spent living alongside it, long enough to know what it costs, or what it gives back.

I heard that lesson for years. And I still managed to miss it in real time, aimed at a woman I like and respect, over a voice memo I sent with my whole chest. I assumed lack where there was accumulation. I assumed absence where there was three years of unglamorous intimacy. I built her an entire emotional arc around a scarcity that never existed, because grieving on her behalf was easier than asking her a single question about her own life.

Maybe we do this constantly. Decide someone is lonely because they’re single. Decide someone is unfulfilled because they haven’t gotten the job, the deal, the ring, the machine. Skip the part where we ask what their relationship to the thing has actually been, the whole time we were busy assuming they didn’t have one.

She didn’t need my grief. She needed me to ask a better question.

Angel was placing cushions on the cabana lounge chairs early that morning at the St. Regis when he said, “Welcome to my office” with a big smirk. He saw I was an early riser.

I could have heard that line as a ‘joke’ a groundskeeper makes to guests. Instead I heard a man describing a decision. He’d made nature a condition of where he was willing to spend his hours, then gone and found the job that fit inside that condition, rather than taking whatever office landed on him.

So I started asking him questions. How far he lived from there. Whether people at a place like that got taken care of. Whether he enjoyed his days. He told me about the ranch, forty-five minutes out, one direction, and about his commute, whether he put music on for it or let it stay silent, whether the drive itself was part of what he’d built.

He said he couldn’t picture living in the city, ‘too dense’ for what he wanted, when what he had instead was the tranquil version with his family, land under all of it.

I could tell by how he answered that no one usually asked. People ask him for a cushion, a towel, directions to the bar. Not what his life looks like at the end of the workday. Not whether he likes or loves it.

I told him I was still exploring the city, that I understood learning Spanish would open up a different version of it than the one I had access to now. He grinned and told me the real reason I hadn’t learned it yet was that I hadn’t had enough tequila or mezcal. The grin did more work than the joke did, I saw his whole personality land in that half-second, the freedom and humor a person develops after years of talking to strangers who are only passing through.

At some point we ended up sitting side by side on the lounge chairs instead of facing each other, both of us looking out at the same waves. Two people from entirely different lives; his built around a ranch and a family and a forty-five-minute drive, mine built around a laptop that could open anywhere, sitting on the same sand for our own separate reasons, neither of which had anything to do with the other, and both of which had landed us there at the same hour.

Then he turned it around. Asked if I physically worked in Mexico City. I said not really, although I have been branding a project that will physicalize in the next few weeks right in the heart of Roma Norte. ‘On my laptop, mostly anywhere. But I always imagined I’d live somewhere more desolate in nature. He paused, then asked, “What are you waiting for?”

I didn’t have an answer.

I’d gone into that conversation curious about him, and ended it being the one taken apart. I hadn’t expected that. To ask someone about his life as a kind of generosity, and have it come back around as a mirror instead. Lease, routine, the general sense that a life needs a fixed address to count as one, I ran through my reasons and none of them held. They weren’t really substantial ideas, but I noticed I’d arranged myself around them.

I think most lies we live by work exactly this way. Not chosen, righteously, but inherited defaults that calcified into personality, never once tested because no one asked the question directly enough to make you check.

I watched Angel finish with the cushions and walk back toward the hotel, and I sat with the ocean a while longer, still turning over what he’d handed me. Not the ranch. Not yet.

But the asking, that part I could start today.

Eight months since I’d been in it.

The sticky air in Punta Mita arrives ahead of the view, so the ocean reaches you before you’ve met it.

Eight months since my body remembered what it feels like to stop negotiating with gravity.

I want to tell you what happens in that moment, because I don’t think it’s sentimental. I think it’s structural.

On land, even doing nothing, your body is working. Standing, sitting, lying flat on a bed, some muscle somewhere is holding a position against the pull of the earth. It never fully stops. You don’t notice the labor because you’ve never lived without it.

Then you’re in salt water, and the water does the holding instead.

The inner ear, the part of you that spends its whole existence tracking tilt and balance and correcting for sway, gets a message it almost never receives: nothing to fix. No correction required. That’s the actual mechanism behind the ‘exhale’ everyone describes when they float.

The body isn’t just relaxing. It’s being excused from a job it forgot it was doing.

There’s a sound the waves make, like a resting heartbeat. Something in the nervous system hears that pattern and starts matching it, pulling itself down to meet the pace of the water rather than the pace of the last eight months. Not meditation. Closer to a body eavesdropping on something calmer than itself, and deciding to follow.

The eyes get a horizon. No near-focus, no scrolling, no fine print, no face to read. Just a line where the water ends and the sky starts, stretching out far past where a phone screen or a laptop or a to-do list could ever reach.

Researchers who study awe have a name for what a wide-open view like that does: the self gets smaller in the foreground, and everything that felt urgent an hour ago gets still.

Blood plasma and seawater are not identical. But they are closer than almost any other two fluids you could name. Which means the recognition I felt wasn’t invented. Some part of me was tasting a thing my own body is partly made of, and clocking it as familiar.

Marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols called this ‘Blue Mind’, the measurable shift that happens near water, distinct from what a walk in the park does, distinct from a workout, its own particular chemistry of calm.

I’d add one line to his research, from a woman who just spent eight months landlocked and didn’t know how much of herself she’d put down until the ocean picked it back up: It was about the one place left where nothing asks you to hold yourself up.

I don’t think this is only about oceans.

Ask yourself what’s been holding a position it never gets to release; a relationship you keep correcting for, a version of yourself you keep balancing against other people’s expectations, a role at work you never fully set down even on the weekend. The muscle doing that work has been on so long you’ve stopped noticing it’s a muscle at all.

The ocean let me feel the difference between holding and being held. That difference is available on land too, in smaller, less salted forms — a conversation where you don’t have to perform, a decision someone else finally takes off your plate, an hour with no correction required…

People kept telling me to watch it. Not recommending, insisting. ‘It reminds me of you. I think you’d like it.’ Said with a kind of certainty. A movie I’d heard summarized in one dismissive sentence: A man falls in love with his operating system. She’s not real.

I sat down this weekend and watched Her for the first time. Twelve years late. Everyone else already knew.

AI and operating systems aren’t new. We’ve been living alongside this technology for years now, folding it into casual conversation without a second thought. What Spike Jonze uses it for is something older — a two-hour question about whether the specific, electric feeling of being known by someone is really so different from being read well by something that studied a few billion humans and learned the shape of longing. Where do we draw the line, inject our morals, and hold back our judgment, in order to understand belonging more freely?

I smiled, and I laughed. I cried, and I hollered. I gasped at the parts I didn’t expect to gasp at, and I giggled at the ones that caught me off guard. A love story with one body in the room. Spike still found every nook and crevice of me, tickled the human in me, touched something in my spirit, and made me grateful to be alive, sitting there in front of a screen.

Where does intimacy actually live: in the body, or in the attention? Is monogamy a rule we keep or a story we tell to feel safe? How much of connection is discovery and how much is recognition, someone naming a thing you already were?

We like to believe our love is unrepeatable. That the way we need to be touched, the specific silence we require after an argument, the childhood wound someone finally speaks to without us explaining it; that all of it is ours alone. And maybe it is. What if what we experience as deeply individual is, underneath, primal pattern recognition: the pull of social hierarchy and belonging playing out in each of us, on a particular day, aimed at us specifically, even as it repeats itself in the masses?

Her doesn’t resolve that tension, but it holds it up to the light and asks you to sit there, until you’ve felt both sides of it at once: that you are singular, and that you are also, achingly, made of the same longing everyone else is made of.

So, to everyone who told me I’d like it: I told you so, right back. You were right. I was changed by the time I stood up. That’s the only metric that’s ever mattered to me in a film, not whether it’s good, but whether it rearranges something in your inner architecture. Whether you leave a little differently built than you arrived.

Twelve years later is still on time.

I sat down with a group of women I hadn’t seen in a while, women who had a history with me that included the last time I saw them, a version of me still inside a tension I’d been carrying in my romantic relationship, still raw enough that I’d said something about it out loud.

This time, sitting across from the same faces, I felt something I wasn’t expecting.

Relief. A looseness in my chest, I hadn’t fully understood until I sat with it afterward.

They noticed it too, “You seem lighter,” they said, “more playful, almost childlike.” I sat with that and had no idea what to do with it, because I genuinely couldn’t tell if I was looking at growth or at something that just looked like it from the outside.

The relief wasn’t coming from anything having resolved in the relationship itself. People don’t change overnight, but their perspectives can. What had shifted was the weight I was assigning it — the story I’d built around what that tension meant, how much space it deserved, what it said about me or the relationship or the future. Nothing on the outside had moved. Something in how much I was carrying had.

I wanted to call that growth. Sitting there, being told I seemed lighter, I still couldn’t tell if that was true.

What unsettles me is this: real integration and avoidance can produce the exact same symptom. Calm. Distance. The absence of the old charge. From the inside, in the moment itself, there’s often no way to tell whether you’re sitting in front of the thing having actually metabolized it, or whether you’ve simply gotten better, more articulate, more self-aware in language, at not feeling it. You can build a vocabulary sophisticated enough to describe not dealing with something in terms that sound identical to having dealt with it. The words “I’ve done the work on that” can be entirely true, or they can be the most polished form of avoidance a person has ever built.

There’s a third possibility too: sometimes the trigger simply isn’t present in the room. The conversation doesn’t ask as much of you this time. The stakes happen to be lower. The version of the old wound that shows up is the easy version, not the exact one, and its failure to catch you tells you nothing about your growth and everything about the fact that you weren’t actually tested.

I don’t think there’s an honest way to answer this at the moment it’s happening. I think the answer only shows up later, under pressure, when you’re tired or cornered, and it’s the precise shape of the ‘old pattern’, not a softened version of it.

Growth that’s real tends to survive contact — the similar trigger, the bad timing, the version of the conversation that used to unravel you, arriving on a day you had nothing left. Growth that’s actually avoidance tends to only survive absence. It holds up fine as long as the test never quite arrives.

I don’t have a tidy resolution to offer here, and I’m suspicious of anyone who does.

What I have instead is a practice: when something that used to catch me doesn’t catch me anymore, I’ve started asking a follow-up question. Was I tested, or was I spared? Did I meet the exact thing, or did an easier version of it walk through instead? It’s an uncomfortable question to keep asking yourself. It’s also the only one that keeps you honest about which spiral you’re actually in; the one that’s taking you deeper, or the one that’s just taking you around.

The rain that morning had a certain airness to it, the kind that makes Mexico City feel more intimate. I’d pulled on my trench—olive, a bit too formal for a Tuesday morning around the block because I wanted to feel contained, held together by something crisp and intentional.

I was a few blocks from home when he stopped me. Not aggressively. Politely. He asked where a stylish woman like me might go for coffee. And something in me, some instinct I didn’t question, told me I was supposed to walk him there myself. So I did.

By the time we reached the coffee shop, accepting his invitation to sit down together felt like the obvious next step.

He was reading Michael Pollan. I mentioned I’d seen recent interviews about consciousness, and from there the conversation opened into spirituality, mushroom ceremonies, vipassana, children, interconnectedness, the kind of talk people usually save for someone they’ve known for years.

He told me about leaving finance for social work, a pivot that sounded less like a career change and more like a return to himself. Still unsure if his rebellion from capitalism would resolve the tension within him.

We talked about Esther Perel, about couples therapy courses he’d taken not for a relationship but for the architecture of intimacy itself. And somewhere in there, he dismantled every tired assumption I’d absorbed about men and their emotional inabilities. He wasn’t performing in depth. He simply had it.

Then he turned the questions toward me. He asked about my parents’ love—what it looked like, whether I’d felt it plainly or had to go looking for it. He asked about my father, about the passing. He asked if I was comfortable being visible online, living so much of my inner life in public.

I choked. I paused. I felt the old instinct rise—the one that resists the permission to reveal, to unravel in front of a stranger. And he just held his gaze, warm, patient, unbothered by my silence. He didn’t rescue me from the pause. He let me find my own way through it.

That’s when I recognized something I’d been avoiding: So many of us know how to give presence. We’re the ones people come to. The ones trusted with the difficult things. And we can do that because it doesn’t require much vulnerability from us. We control the depth, the pace, the distance.

Receiving, though. Being studied. Being held. Being so fully witnessed that there’s nowhere left to hide. That asks something entirely different.

There’s a discomfort in being asked a question and realizing the person asking has no interest in the polished answer. He wasn’t looking for the version I give at dinner parties, the one with the timeline already smoothed over, the grief already organized into something coherent. He wanted the unedited version. The one still forming.

I’ve spent so much of my life on the other side of that exchange. Someone tells me something raw, and I know exactly what to do with it. I know how to hold my face steady, how to ask the next question, how to make silence feel safe instead of empty. It’s a skill, and I built it carefully, and it has served me. But it also let me hide. If I was always the one asking, I never had to answer. If I was always the container, I never had to be poured into.

Sitting across from that man, I understood I’d spent years avoiding that particular vulnerability by perfecting the other side of it. Being so good at holding space meant I never had to surrender into being held. And surrender is the right word for it, uncomfortable as it sounds, because there’s genuinely a moment of letting go required—a decision to stop managing how you’re perceived and just be perceived.

My throat closed around my father's name. I felt the old reflex kick in, the one that reaches for a joke or a redirection, anything to keep the conversation moving before the feeling arrives in full. And he didn't rescue me from it.

He didn’t fill the silence or offer an exit. He just stayed there, gaze steady, giving me the room to sit inside my own unraveling without an audience I needed to perform for.

That’s the practice I actually need. Not learning to see other people more clearly—I already know how to do that. Learning to be seen without flinching first. Learning that being fully known by someone isn’t a threat to defend against. It’s the thing I’ve been circling my whole life without letting myself land in it.

We finished our coffee as the morning eased into summer light, and I walked home without the jacket doing the work it was meant to do. I’d worn it to feel contained. Instead, I’d spent an hour completely open, in front of someone who would return to Oaxaca in a matter of days and likely never think of me again.

That’s the part that stays with me. The stakes were low enough to let me practice. A stranger, a single morning, no history to protect and no future to manage. He asked, and I answered, and the answering itself became the point.

I keep thinking about who gets access to that version of me. My closest people. The ones who’ve earned it. And still—if I’m honest—I give it to them in careful doses, timed and measured, never quite the full unravel. A stranger on a Tuesday saw more of me than most people I love see in a year, simply because he asked and then stayed.

So this is the practice now. Not becoming better at holding space, since I already know how to do that. Learning to let someone hold mine. Learning to sit in the pause after the hard question and let it stretch, instead of reaching for the joke that gets me out of it.

Jessie.. I know that he read Michael Pollan, that he left finance for social work, that he asked about my father without flinching. I know that for one hour in the misty morning, I learned that I know how to hold space for anyone. I’m only just learning how to let someone hold mine.

And I’m still finding my way back to that willingness, one uncomfortable pause at a time.

I sat across from a client last week and watched her fall in love with eight different colors at once.

We’d built the two separate palettes carefully, each option a full argument for who her brand could be.

Red and terracotta and ink and bone. Midnight navy, kelly green, crisp white. She looked at all four and said the thing I’ve heard a version of a hundred times: “I love them all. I can’t pick.”

I used to hear that sentence as a taste. Now I hear it as grief.

Here is what’s actually happening in that room. The moment she chooses red, she loses kelly green. Not lose it forever, but lose it as a live possibility. The version of her brand that could have existed in that color goes still. And nobody ever taught her that this is allowed to hurt a little.

So instead of grieving the four colors she isn’t choosing, she stalls, and calls the stalling indecision, when it’s closer to mourning something that hasn’t died yet.

Choosing is the first death in any creative process. Every yes closes a thousand doors that were, until that second, still open. Most people were never given permission to feel that as loss, so they experience it only as fear; fear of being wrong, fear of being boxed in, fear of the version of themselves they’ll never get to try on.

There’s a deeper layer underneath the color. A palette is never really about the palette. It’s a stand-in for the harder question sitting underneath it: who am I willing to be, in front of everyone, starting now? Every aesthetic choice is a small act of self-foreclosure. She isn’t stuck on red versus navy. She’s stuck on becoming legible, on the fact that once she’s red, she can be recognized, which also means she can be judged, outgrown, wrong.

The four colors sitting untouched on the table aren’t protecting her freedom. They’re costing her the one thing a brand is actually for.

A color system only becomes an asset once it has rules. Not we use red, but red is primary, it shows up in this ratio, in this context, never beside a competing warm tone, always with this weight of white space around it. The rules are what turn a preference into a pattern. And pattern is what people actually remember. Recognition has never come from beauty alone. It comes from repetition under constraint.

So the woman refusing to choose is, without realizing it, refusing the one mechanism that would make choosing worth it.

She wants the palette without the law of the palette. All the color, none of the discipline. But a brand isn’t a shelf of options held in reserve for every mood. It’s a set of constraints held so consistently that a stranger can recognize you before they’ve read your name.

The freedom she thinks she’s protecting by keeping every option alive is the exact freedom a strong brand has to give up in order to exist. What she’s calling restriction is recognition in work clothes. What she’s calling freedom produces the opposite of a brand: nothing repeats long enough to mean anything, and she stays unreadable — to her market, and eventually to herself.

I think about this every time I watch someone hover over a decision that has nothing to do with the decision in front of them. The stalling is never about the colors. It’s about what it costs to be seen clearly, on purpose, in one direction, starting today.

Pick the red. That’s not a smaller life. That’s the first rule of a legible one.

No, You Cannot Pick My Brain.

There is a version of this text, email, voice memo I have received so many times I could recite it before I open it. A line about how they’ve “followed my journey, appreciate the gorgeous work and expression.” Followed by the question, “Can I pick your brain?”

For years, I said yes. I liked being asked. It felt like proof — that the thing I’d built in private, the instincts I’d sharpened on my own clients at my own cost, had become visible to someone else. Being wanted for your mind is a specific kind of flattery. It feels like proof, and for a long time I mistook the warmth of that for a real exchange.

It is not.

Flattery and investment are different currencies, and only one of them costs the other person anything.

Here’s what I missed at the start: the sentence is built to erase the labor. “Pick your brain” implies the knowledge is just sitting there, loose, like change in a jar — something you happen to have, not something you built by paying for it in the specific coin of your twenties, your bad clients, your late nights rewriting the same paragraph until it told the truth. Nobody asks a carpenter to pick their sawdust. They ask a carpenter for a table, and they expect to pay for the table. What I make is thinking, and that seems to entitle people to it in its raw form, unbilled, ungoverned by a calendar invite, delivered over a coffee that they will let me pay for.

The deeper thing, though, is about time. Not knowledge. Time is the actual asset being requested, and it is the one resource that does not replenish. I can write another essay. I cannot get back the hour I spent explaining, gently, to someone I will never work with, the exact framework I charge four, five, six figures for. Every hour has an opportunity cost, and “pick your brain” asks you to forget that, to treat your hour as if it exists outside the economy the rest of your life runs on.

Often, what’s being requested isn’t even my thinking. It’s my permission. People don’t want the framework. They want someone with apparent authority to tell them the thing they already suspect is true; that the job is wrong, that the idea has legs, that they’re allowed. That’s not brain-picking. That’s a form of absolution, and absolution is not free labor I owe strangers because I produced something that resonated with them.

What changed wasn’t that I got colder. It’s that I started asking a different question when the request landed: what is this person actually asking me to give away, and would they ask a lawyer, a doctor, a plumber the same thing, in the same tone, expecting the same yes? Almost never. The ask survives specifically because my expertise looks like personality. It looks like something I’d do for free because I enjoy it, because it doesn’t look like effort from the outside, because nobody watches you build a body of work, they only see you speaking fluently about it later, and fluency reads as ease.

I move between five kinds of work, and each one is a different way of doing the same thing. I learned that language can be a powerful tool not only for me but also for others, so they can understand that the “magic” is really accumulated skills.

Creative direction is setting the visual and tonal world: deciding what something looks, feels, sounds like, and connecting it back to its authentic intention and expression.

Belief work is shifting the unconscious architecture underneath a person’s choices: finding the assumption, running the behavior, and changing that.

Creative producing and matchmaking is pairing the right people and pulling a project into existence: seeing who belongs together before either of them does.

Recruitment is sourcing the humans who belong inside a team or a vision: placing the right person, not just the right skill set.

Brand strategy and expansion are growing what already works into more rooms: taking a thing that succeeds in one form and building the version of it that succeeds in the next one.

Here is where I’ve landed, and it’s less a boundary than a translation: if you want my time, name it as time. I’ve been watching the World Cup, and something keeps moving me, the faces.

Men from places I couldn’t point to on a map with any confidence, wearing features I’ve genuinely never seen before; not in movies, not on my feed, not walking down any street I’ve ever lived on. A brow line. A jaw. A way a nose sits on a face. Small architectural facts about a human being that I had simply never encountered until this exact moment, live, within packed stadiums, mid-sprint.

It sounds obvious when I write it down. Of course, the world is full of faces I’ve never seen. There are eight billion of us. But knowing that and feeling it are different things.

“Everyone is special” is practically a given, a value I’d have signed my name to before the tournament ever started.

But holding a belief and being struck by it are two different registers entirely. The World Cup didn’t teach me anything new. It just moved something I already knew from the shelf where I store facts into the room where I actually live.

Most of my life is curated without my permission. My feed shows me more of what I already clicked on. Even my imagination, when I try to picture “a person,” some default renders itself before I can stop it, and that default is never the full range of what’s actually out there. I’ve built, or had built for me, an incredibly efficient machine for showing me sameness and calling it ‘the world’.

The World Cup breaks that machine, for ninety minutes at a time. It’s one of the last mass events left that just, shows you everyone. Unscripted. Unfiltered. Not selected for how well they’ll perform in a feed.

It’s not only the exposure that does it. It’s the frame around the exposure. These are the best in the world, doing the one thing they’ve built their whole lives around, watched by billions at the exact moment it matters most. That context is what gives an unfamiliar face permission to read as remarkable instead of just other. Strip the stadium away, put that same face on a subway platform, and I probably don’t look twice. I needed the right frame before I was willing to really see. Which is its own indictment that my attention has conditions on it at all.

And what struck me, watching it, wasn’t just “wow, humans come in a lot of forms.” It was closer to grief and relief at the same time. Grief, because I realized how much of that variation I’ve been trained not to notice, or not to have language for, or to file under “unusual” instead of just — a face, a real one, unedited. Relief, because apparently none of it needed my permission to exist. It was all there the whole time, unbothered by whether I’d been exposed to it yet.

This is going to sound like a hard turn, but it isn’t, not for me: this is the same thing I say about brands, about people, about the work I do every day with clients who are trying to become memorable.

The players who stuck with me weren’t the ones who looked like a composite, an average, an algorithm’s best guess at “handsome.” They were the ones with one unmistakable thing, a gap in the teeth, a scar, a nose that had clearly been broken and reset at least once.

We spend so much energy, so much of our lives, sanding down our own specificity into something more exportable. More palatable. More like the average of everyone we admire.

And then I watch a stadium full of men who were never given the memo, whose faces were just allowed to be exactly, uncompromisingly what they are, and every single one of them is more memorable for it.

The world is not the sample size my algorithm has been feeding me, and neither, probably, are we.

It was six in the morning and the city had not yet woken. Mexico City at that hour is a held note, all the noise pulled back, the streets emptied of everyone but the people who have decided to meet the day before it arrives. I went out to run. It might have looked sporadic, this sudden lacing up, though I had been planting the seed for weeks, naming the longing to myself until it was loud enough to obey.

There are seasons when running feels like the closest we come to flying, and I had wandered back into one.

I was slow. Lethargic, even, and yet I was grinning, because here I was, running. The body comes back humbled. Every old ache returns to remind you that thirty-seven is not seventeen, but my goodness, you can still run, so what else is there to say. That was the whole prayer of the morning: still here, still moving, still allowed.

Near the end, a woman blew past me. Ponytail swinging, all economy and ease. In my twenties, my ego would have flared, would have read her speed as a verdict on my own. That reflex has worn down to something better, though. What I felt instead was clean and uncomplicated: ‘Oh, she’s fast, how lovely.’ I kept her in my frame as she pulled ahead on the Amsterdam road, that beautiful outer ring of a street, and without quite deciding to, I lifted my pace to hold her there.

Then I noticed something. Other women, scattered along the path, turned to watch her too. And one by one, almost shyly, they picked up; simply because a person moving with conviction sends a signal through everyone in range, and those willing to receive it rise. I cut out of the inner path to get a level sight of her on the road. Step by step, breath by breath, I found a reserve I did not know I was carrying. Left to my own devices, I would have finished the slow, forgiving run I’d planned. Instead I was huffing, closing the gap, more alive than my own intentions had budgeted for.

This is the power of the pacer. Not coaching, not encouragement, nothing so deliberate. Just a body in full effort, and the way it reorganizes the air around it.

I have always thought of the pacer as someone you receive, the gift that arrives ahead of you and pulls you forward. She didn’t know she was doing anything. She wasn’t trying to lift the women on that path. She was just running her own race honestly. Which means the inspiring and the inspired were never separate roles. The same act did both. Her full effort was simultaneously her own and a current that moved through a dozen strangers she’ll never meet.

So which was I, that morning — the one lifted, or the one lifting? Both, it turns out, and at the same time. Somewhere behind me, someone may have watched me cut onto the road and find my legs and thought oh, she’s going for it, and adjusted their own pace by a degree they’ll never trace back to me. We were all pacing each other. None of us knew. That is the part that undoes me a little.

I think this is true far beyond the run. We spend so much energy trying to be inspiring, as if it is a thing to perform toward others. The woman on Amsterdam was inspiring precisely because she wasn’t performing anything. She was just fully, unselfconsciously committed to her own motion. The transmission was a byproduct of her integrity, not her intention. You don’t become a pacer by trying to lift people. You become one by going for it so honestly that the going becomes contagious.

Which means the most generous thing you can do, often, is simply to rise to your own call without looking around to see who’s watching. Run your run. Take the bold effort. The people willing to receive it will feel the draft and lift — and you will never know their names, just as you rarely know the names of everyone who has set your own pace.

Mira called me earlier this week because she wants to work with me — to be one of my coaching clients.

She started telling me about her two jobs, and the way she said it made it sound like a confession.

One is logistical. She loves a spreadsheet the way some people love a clean kitchen — the order of it, she organizes film productions. She knows where every dollar is going before it goes there. The other job, a salon owner, is the artistic one, the part of her that wanted the spreadsheet to exist in service of something beautiful in the first place. She said she’s equal parts both, like it was a problem to solve rather than the whole shape of her.

Then she told me about the project she’s running now. A million one. She oversees all of it — every line, every vendor, every contingency. And somewhere in the middle of describing this, almost as an aside, she said: “I sit with those numbers and realize I still haven’t found the courage to ask what I’ll be paid to do my job.”

She manages a $1.1 million budget. She cannot ask about one line in it. Her own.

“I don’t know why,” she said. “I can be forward and firm and clear for my clients. For other people. And then it’s me, and I hide. I don’t ask the basic question. The appropriate question. The one I’d tell anyone else to ask in a heartbeat.”

I have been thinking about that, because it isn’t really about money. Or — it is, but money is just the vehicle where the thing finally became visible.

The freeze Mira describes isn’t a competence problem. She is fluent in numbers.

It’s the opposite of a knowledge gap. It’s a surplus.

There's a thing psychologists call Solomon's Paradox, after the king who was famous for his wisdom about everyone's life but his own. The research behind it is unglamorous and devastating: people reason more wisely about other people's problems than their own identical problems. Not slightly more wisely. Measurably, reliably more. When you advise a client, you are standing at a distance, and the distance is what makes you clear.

You can see the structure of the thing. When it’s your own life, you are inside it, flooded with everything that makes it yours, and the same brain that was so sharp a moment ago goes soft and evasive.

So Mira isn’t failing to know the answer. She is the answer. She’d hand it to anyone else without blinking. The only thing she can’t do is stand far enough back from herself to receive it.

The intervention that works, in the studies, is almost insultingly simple. You ask: What would I tell a friend? Or you say your own name out loud, in the third person. Why is Mira afraid to ask? It manufactures the distance artificially. It tricks the wise part of you into showing up for the one person it usually abandons.

But I don’t think distance is the whole of it, and I told her so.

The reason the question stays stuck in her throat isn’t only that she’s too close. It’s what asking the question would force her to find out.

When you run someone else’s budget, money is information. It’s neutral. A number is just a fact about the world. But the moment the number is what you are worth, what someone is willing to pay for you to be in the room, it stops being information and becomes exposure. To say the figure out loud is to make your own value measurable. And measurable means refutable. The number can come back lower than you needed it to be. Silence can’t be refuted. Silence gives the illusion that protects the fantasy that you are worth whatever you privately hope.

This is the part people mean, I think, when they talk about money as energetics. The phrase gets dismissed as woo, but underneath it, there’s something real that the research actually supports: money is symbolic long before it’s transactional.

We absorb beliefs about it early: money as safety, money as status, money as exposure, money as the thing you don’t reach for, or you’ll be told to know your place, and those beliefs run the show far more than any spreadsheet logic does

It doesn’t matter which of her two jobs she’s standing in. The logistical one, where she’s fluent in every number on the page. The creative one, where she’s the artist. In both, the second the money in question becomes hers, the same door closes. It isn’t a logistical problem or an artistic one. It follows her between the two like a shadow, which is how you know it was never about the work at all. It’s about what asking would force her to find out about her own worth.

There’s one more thread I won’t pretend isn’t there. Women negotiate for themselves far less than they do for other people, and not because they’re timid. The research is clear that when women do advocate for their own worth, they’re more likely to be penalized for it. So the hesitation isn’t only an internal flinch. It’s partly a learned, rational response to how self-advocacy has actually been received, over a whole life. Which is its own kind of heartbreak: that the silence might be intelligent. That it learned to be there for a reason.

I keep returning to Claire Keegan, the way I always do — So Late in the Day, that small brutal book about a man who cannot reach for the thing he wants and tells himself a story about why he doesn’t want it. The tragedy isn’t that he doesn’t know. It’s that he knows perfectly well and lets the moment pass anyway, and then builds a life out of the passing.

That’s the part that excites me as a coach about Mira’s call. Not that she doesn’t know what to ask. She knows. She’d coach me through it line by line. It’s that knowing isn’t the same as letting yourself have it, and the gap between those two things is where whole lives get spent or learn to expand.

So here is what I told her:

The advice you give other people is already the advice. You are not waiting on more information. You have all of it. You’ve had it the whole time. What you’re waiting for is permission to stand at the same distance from yourself that you so generously give everyone else. To treat your own number as one more line in a budget you already know how to manage.

You are not afraid because you don’t know. You’re afraid because you do.

I was sitting across from my friend Nolan, and my stomach was doing backflips.

He was helping me set up Obsidian. An AI agent. Tools… that’s all they are. Folders and prompts and a system for thinking. There was nothing in that room to be afraid of. No one was judging me. No outcome was on the line. And still my body had decided we were in danger, and it was bracing for something.

I sat there noticing it. The flip, the tightness, the small animal urge to close the laptop and say let’s do this another time. And I thought: this is not about Obsidian.

Here is what I’ve come to understand about the body, slowly, in moments exactly like this one.

The nervous system cannot tell the difference between a threat and a becoming. It feels them the same way. The same flood, the same brace, the same command to retreat to where things are known.

So when you sit down to learn the thing that would change how you work — how you think, how much you could hold, your body reads it as a threat to your survival. Because in a way, it is. It’s a threat to the survival of who you’ve been.

That’s what the backflips were. Not fear of the software. A loyalty, fierce and ancient, to the version of me who got this far without it. The one who has her ways. The one who has survived beautifully on instinct and improvisation. That version was not going to go easily, she was doing backflips to keep me in the chair I already knew how to sit in.

Resistance gets louder the closer you get to who you could become.

It is not a sign you’re doing the wrong thing. It is, almost always, a sign you’re doing the exact right one. The discomfort is the omission, the threshold of every version of yourself you haven’t met yet; the awkwardness of not knowing, the exposure of being taught, the vertigo of structure when you’ve always trusted the chaos. The body files all of it under danger and hopes you’ll turn back.

And most people do. They just feel the flip in the stomach and decide maybe ‘another time’. They mistake the discomfort for a verdict instead of a doorway. And so they stay fluent, capable, and exactly the same, protected from the only thing that was ever going to grow them.

I keep thinking about something author Claire Keegan said that the real risk isn’t the change. It’s what you lose if you can’t bring yourself to make it.

We talk about change like the danger is in the trying. It isn’t. The danger is in the not. It’s in the slow, invisible cost of staying legible to yourself — of choosing, again and again, the comfort of the known over the discomfort of becoming, until one day you look up and realize you protected yourself right out of your own life.

Nothing terrible happened. That’s the tragedy. Nothing happened at all.

So I kept my hands on the keyboard. I let the backflips do their thing. I stayed in the chair and let Nolan introduce me to the small, unglamorous mechanics of a tool I didn’t yet know how to use, and I let myself be a beginner in front of someone, which is its own act of courage.

The stomach knows before you do. But it doesn’t get to decide.

It only ever knew how to keep me safe. It never knew how to make me new.

There’s a knot in the middle of my right scapula that’s been there for years. I’ve done the things you do. Stretched it. Pressed a ball into the wall and leaned my weight in until it hurt in the good way. Hired body workers, been to physical therapy, etc. And then, because the knot stayed, I did the other thing — I went looking for what it meant.

Right side, masculine energy. Shoulders, the place you carry what isn’t yours. I read it the way you read a horoscope you’ve already decided to believe. And somewhere in the middle of it, I caught myself.

The right-scapula-means-this decoder doesn’t hold up. No chart agrees with the next one. The map keeps redrawing itself depending on who’s holding the pen.

Here’s what I’m less quick to dismiss: I wasn’t wrong to be reaching.

I’m not the only one. The psychic services industry in the US is a $2.3 billion business, spread across more than a hundred thousand practitioners, and it’s been growing steadily for years — not in spite of how anxious and uncertain everything has gotten, but because of it.

When the ground feels unstable, people go looking for someone who can read it back to them. Over sixty percent of millennials and Gen Z reach for some spiritual tool to manage stress. The tarot deck, the birth chart, the reader on the other end of the app at two in the morning. We are, collectively, spending a fortune to be told what we already suspect.

And I don’t think that’s gullible. I think it’s one of the most honest things about us.

We don’t go to these places to be informed. We go to be given the thing we’re already holding.

The tarot doesn’t tell you something you didn’t know — it gives you permission to know it. The astrology isn’t a forecast; it’s a mirror tilted at the exact angle where you’ll finally look at yourself. The reader says, “You’ve been carrying something that isn’t yours,” and you cry, not because it’s news, but because someone finally said the sentence you couldn’t say to yourself.

We are pulling the card, already knowing the answer. We are not paying for information. We are paying for permission.

And the body works the same way. The ache in the spot the internet calls “burden” is not a coded message from the universe waiting to be decrypted. It’s saying the plainest possible thing, in the only language it has left, because every other channel is occupied with holding the structure together.

The symptom isn’t a riddle. It’s the truth you wouldn’t let yourself say, taking the shape it had to take to get your attention.

We’ve gotten so used to handling it — the schedule, the people, the weight of being the one who carries — that the handling becomes the only language we speak. We process everything through doing. We metabolize feeling into output. And the body, patient and literal, keeps the one record we can’t edit. It won’t perform okay-ness. It can’t be talked out of what it knows. It just holds the thing, under the shoulder blade, until we’re ready to call it by its name.

Underneath all of it, there’s usually one sentence. Not the to-do list, not the deadline — those are the surface.

Underneath them is a single, ancient line you decided about yourself so long ago you can’t remember deciding it. I’m not safe. It’s all up to me. I have to carry this alone. I’m not enough. I’m too much. You don’t see it because you’re living inside it — it’s the lens, not the thing you’re looking at. And almost everything you’ve built: the competence, the standards, the way you can turn any feeling into a plan is the elaborate, beautiful prison you constructed to manage the pain of that sentence without ever having to feel it directly.

The knot is the cost of the prison. The reaching for the cards is you walking the perimeter of it, hand on the wall, looking for the door.

So I’ll stop asking what the right scapula means.

Instead, I’ll melt into the harder question. What am I carrying that I keep stretching instead of setting down? What have I been processing through doing because feeling it would cost more than I’ve decided I can spend? The knot isn’t a mystery to solve. It’s a sentence I’ve been refusing to finish.

I don’t think the magic is fake. I think the magic is ours — and we keep handing it to someone else to give back to us.

The cards, the chart, the reader, the body. They’re not making the light. They’re just the first place we’re brave enough to look at it.

We don’t go to be given the magic. We go to be reminded it was ours all along.

There is a version of growing up that happens not in childhood but in the uncomfortable negotiations of loving someone well. The kind of conversations that don’t end cleanly, that you carry out the door and down the street and into the evening with you, turning them over like a stone in your hand.

I had one of those recently. Two people sitting across from one another, not in conflict exactly, but in the beautiful, terrifying labor of honest accounting. Who are you bringing into this? Who am I? What do we actually require?

The most gorgeous thing about that kind of recalibration is the gift it gives you back, yourself.

Your path. Your evenings. The you that exists when no one else is with you.

So I walked.

I walk Amsterdam Street in CDMX religiously, it’s become my sanctuary.

That particular evening, I decided to take the stroll with God and my Dad. I told them both how I was feeling. The day slid into evening, and I let myself move slowly, the way you only can when you’re not going anywhere in particular.

And then I saw the red clearance sign.

There was a store I had been meaning to visit for months. An interior design shop tucked on that stretch of road, the kind of place you make a mental note about and then allow life to defer for you repeatedly, confidently, catastrophically. The sign on the door told me everything. The lights were low. Men moved through with bubble wrap and boxes. The inventory was almost gone.

I felt that particular dread. The dread of wanting something, believing there is more time than there is, and discovering you’ve traded the moment for the idea of a moment. I had done what we all do: I filed it under later.

I went around to the back anyway. I am nothing if not committed to long shots.

A young man met me just inside the door. Can I help you? — in English, with a thick Mexican accent. I'm not sure you can, I said, half a smile forming before the sentence did. ‘I have just moved into a new place, nearly empty. I had meant to come before now.’He looked at me with these enormous, earnest eyes and said: Let me get my grandmother.

Cecilia is in her seventies. Blonde-haired, glass-skinned, regal in the specific way that comes not from money but from decades of committed choices. She commands a room without effort with the subtle force of a woman who has decided. There is no better word for her. Decided.

We talked about design. We talked about business, about Mexico City, about business partnership transitions, and the evolution of vision. She had studied at UCLA. My dad and sister went to UCLA. ‘Go Bruins’, we both said, and something in the room relaxed.

She scrolled through photos of my empty apartment with the focus of someone taking a brief seriously. Then she looked up and told me that this: the blank rooms, the bare floors, the nothing is actually the best time. You have a clean slate. You can do anything you want.

She suggested lamps placed on the floor so light travels upward from below. She said to take my time before the big purchases, to include art among the investments that matter, to stack books and let them serve as side tables.

Resourceful, lived-in beauty. That’s Cecilia.

What made you stop? She asked.

I pointed to it, a dark clay vessel, hugged closely by cream leather woven in a crochet pattern, wound tight around the body of the piece like a slow embrace. “ Ah, the indigenous art”, she said. “That’s from Chiapas. Have you ever read Born to Run?”

I hadn’t, but I had briefly heard mention of it.

Same tribes. Tarahumara. “People from all over the world have gone to study them, she explained — to understand the genetics behind their extraordinary endurance. Generation after generation of gifted runners.

Researchers assumed it was biological. Inevitable. Written into them.

But it wasn’t in their genes.

It was their practice.”

And then she told me. “They would tie themselves to the deer. Let the animal set the pace. And they would run to keep up.”

I stopped walking.

The baseline they trained against was not human. It was not a previous personal record or a coach’s expectation or what was average for their age. The standard they calibrated to was something that required them to exceed what they already knew themselves to be. And they rose to it.

Every generation, they rose.

I had left my apartment that evening in the middle of a conversation with myself about what I require as a sovereign woman. Negotiating between who I actually am and want to be and what my inner little girl had long decided a relationship should look like. What is fair. What I will boldly ask for. What I would be comfortable leaving behind. The little girl has her contracts. The woman is learning to rewrite them.

And here was Cecilia, in her store at the edge of transitioning, handing me the whole thing in a parable.

We become more when our standard is something that calls us past what we could reach alone. Not a ceiling that flatters. Not a mirror that confirms. Something that moves, that runs and asks us to keep up.

The store closed. I walked home without the vessel. I had purchased it, but it would come later, delivered by hand a few days after. The apartment was still empty when I got back. But it felt different. I moved the small lamp to the floor, lit from below. A home worth furnishing well.

When the vessel arrived, I set it in the middle of the room and stood with it for a moment. The cream leather wound around that rich dark clay like a warm hug.

A treasure made by people who understood that greatness is not inherited. It is practiced. It is the pace you agree to keep together.

I sat with Palu on Amsterdam Street.

We met at a coffee shop and neither of us ordered a thing. We just found a wooden table and used it for hours, as it turned out. We talked about business and creativity and clients and what it means to grow. About relationships and childhood and the particular freedom and the missed moments, having lived in many different countries, that maybe she would have wanted to slow down for. She’s from Argentina. She has a Julia Roberts smile that is so genuinely open, so childlike in the best possible way, that when it appears, you can’t help but send one back.

At some point she turned to me and asked, “So how do you write your newsletter every week? Where do you get your ideas — do you write potential topics down in a Word doc or something?”

I found it flattering that she wanted to know. Cute, even. That she was curious about my process as though there was a process worth learning.

“No,” I told her. “I usually just sit down (normally the day before ), open my laptop, and struggle to think of what to write. And then I just make sure that I do.”

She waited.

“I know it’s coming out every single week. So I know I’ll turn to something that’s on my heart and let it come through. It sounds strange, but it’s become organic — the fear of not knowing what I’ll write, how it will end, what will even be available in the material. Something always delivers. You don’t have to force it or will it. You just have to be there.“

I hadn’t said it quite like that before. Not out loud, not to anyone. And sitting across from Palu with her unhurried smile, I realized I actually believed it. Not as a strategy. Not as advice I’d give someone else. As something I’d lived my way into, one Thursday at a time, without quite noticing it was happening.

There is a version of showing up that is about control. You map the outcome before you begin. You outline, you prepare, you eliminate uncertainty until the thing feels safe enough to start. It feels like the kind of person you’re supposed to be.

And then there is another kind of showing up. Where you arrive — to the page, to the coffee shop, to the conversation or relationship — without an agenda for how it has to go. Where you trust that if you are genuinely present, something will come through that is worth the arrival. It is harder than it sounds. It requires you to tolerate the open space between sitting down and knowing. But it produces something the other version cannot: something real.

Palu and I didn’t plan that afternoon. We didn’t order anything. We just used a wooden table on Amsterdam Street and let the hours do what they wanted. She told me about growing up across countries, about the versions of herself she left in different cities, about the way creativity has always been the through line. I told her things too — things I didn’t know I had available until she asked.

Neither of us forced it.

Something delivered.

I think about how much of what I’ve made that I’m most proud of arrived that way. I did not will it into existence, I just stayed at the table long enough for it to show up. The newsletter. The work. The conversations that end up meaning something.

You don’t have to know what you’re going to say before you say it.

You just have to be there.

I watched a French film recently that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about — A Prophet.

A young man enters prison with nothing: no allegiance, no language, no armor, and over the course of nearly three hours, you watch him become someone entirely different. Not corrupted, exactly. Educated.

The institution is the curriculum. The other inmates are the faculty. And by the end, he has learned things about power, survival, loyalty, and self-construction that no classroom, no mentor, no well-meaning book could have taught him.

I found the film brilliant and deeply disturbing in equal measure. Some of that discomfort was the darkness of the world Audiard builds; the violence, the claustrophobia, the particular cruelty of men with nothing left to lose.

But some of it was something more personal. My father spent his career as an associate warden.

Prison was not an abstraction in my childhood. It was where my father went every morning and what he carried home at night, even when he never spoke of it. I understood the grammar of that world without ever speaking its language. And watching this film, I kept thinking: he knew things about human nature that most people will never encounter.

He did not actively seek them out, but instead, the room required it of him.

“Context doesn’t just inform understanding. It is understanding. The room teaches you what no one else can.”

There are six places where life reveals itself without apology. Where the ordinary social contract, the one that lets us perform composure, optimism, busyness, certainty… dissolves completely. Where you are returned to the essential question of what it means to be a person moving through the world.

What these places share is that they are all thresholds. Not destinations, thresholds.

Rooms where something is visibly, undeniably in motion.

A life beginning. A life ending. A life being waited on, grieved, released, or rerouted. You cannot be casual inside them. The stakes are too legible. Everyone in the room already knows what is happening, and that shared knowing strips away everything that isn’t necessary.

Most of us spend our lives engineering distance from these places. We visit them when we have to and leave as quickly as we can, grateful to return to the comfortable ambiguity of ordinary life, where nothing is certain enough to demand our full presence. And I understand that instinct. These rooms are hard. They ask something of you.

The people who spend sustained time inside these thresholds: the nurses, the wardens, the midwives, the grief counselors, the social workers, they carry a particular kind of wisdom that is simply not available any other way. They have been educated by context. They know what people are made of because they have watched people find out what they are made of, over and over, in the rooms where pretending is no longer an option.

“Proximity to the threshold is its own education. You don’t have to walk through it yourself to be changed by standing near it.”

My father never lectured me about human nature. He didn’t need to. Something was transmitted through the simple fact of his proximity to that world. A seriousness about people, a refusal to be surprised by what someone was capable of under pressure, a patience with complexity that I have spent my adult life trying to understand and develop. He was educated by context. And living adjacent to that context educated me in ways I am still discovering.

We talk endlessly about what we want to learn, what we want to become, and what we want to build. We optimize our reading lists and our morning routines and our mentorship relationships. And all of that matters. But there is a category of knowledge that lives only in the rooms. That is only available when the conditions are real, when the stakes are actual, when the performance is no longer sustainable.

You cannot read your way into understanding what an airport does to a person at 2am after a cancellation when they are trying to get home to someone sick. You cannot podcast your way into understanding what a delivery room asks of everyone inside it. You cannot optimize your way into understanding what prison teaches a person about who they are when no one is watching except people who would use it against them.

Some things are only learned in the room.

And I think the invitation… the one I’m sitting with after watching Malik walk out of those prison gates into something entirely his own, is to stop treating proximity to the threshold as something to be survived and to start treating it as something to be paid attention to. The rooms that disturb us are usually the rooms that are trying to teach us something we have been successfully avoiding. The discomfort is not incidental. It is the curriculum.

Context is not background. It is the teacher. And the six places where life strips the performance away are not tragedies to be managed. They are classrooms, the most honest ones we have.

I’m sitting at one of the most gorgeous tables I could have imagined owning.

I want you to understand what it took to get here — the effort, the resources, the relationships, the specific kind of stubbornness required to build beauty in your space when you’ve been living out of a suitcase for two years. Some of you watched pieces of that process on my Instagram stories (@MaxineGoynes) a few weeks ago, and your enthusiasm — genuine, generous, warm — meant more than I said at the time. Thank you for that.

The table is less of a table right now and more of an altar. Trinkets and ceramics gathered from travels abroad, objects that each carry a geography, a memory, a version of me I was still becoming. It holds everything I haven’t found a place for yet. Which feels, honestly, exactly right.

On that same table, there is a beautiful hand-crafted paper with a painting on it from my dear friend Jules. It reads:

“The Universe doesn’t wait for you to prove yourself — it waits for you to trust yourself.”

I glance at it after I wipe a tear from a phone call I just concluded.

A former collegiate teammate and one of the most phenomenal women I know is a fertility specialist. She didn’t just talk to me today. She prayed over me. We started a conversation after my 37th birthday about considering freezing my eggs or embryos, and what I didn’t expect was how much emotion was sitting just beneath the surface of what felt like a practical, strategic, very me kind of decision.

Because that’s what I do. I create a vision. I build. I resource. I execute. I have spent the better part of my adult life being the kind of woman who figures it out, and I am proud of that woman. She got me the table.

But here is what I haven’t said out loud yet. What I am saying here, to you, for the first time.

I’m not sure I want to freeze my eggs.

The science is sound. My doctor is extraordinary. I have thought about it carefully — similar to the way I think about everything, which is to say thoroughly, from many angles.

I’m unsure because I am afraid that having the option will allow me to avoid the things I actually need to do if having a child is a part of my life’s path.

The conversations I’ve been postponing. The standards I’ve been too comfortable not naming. The love I say I want but have not always made room for — not really, not in the way that requires you to be inconvenienced and vulnerable and honest about what you’re actually looking for and what you will no longer accept.

Freezing my eggs can be an act of wisdom. I believe that. But for me, right now, it could also be an elegant exit from discomfort. A way of telling myself I’ve handled it when really I’ve only insured against it.

And I don’t want to insure against the life I want. I want to go live it.

This is the thing nobody tells you about being a capable woman: your competence can become its own kind of cage. You are so good at solving problems that you start solving your way around the ones that actually require you to feel them, face them, and choose differently.

Freezing your eggs is an act of control that is also an act of faith. I understand that. You are betting on a future self you haven’t met yet. But I keep asking myself, what if the bet I need to make is not on a future version of me, but on the present one? What if the trust the universe is asking for isn’t about my biology, but about my willingness to stop postponing the life that would make motherhood and real love not a future plan but an inevitable arrival?

It is a dance between controlling your life and trusting it.

I have been better at the former.

Summer always does something to me. The light changes, and something in my chest loosens. And this summer, sitting at this table I worked ‘hard’ to deserve, I find myself wanting something I can’t build, resource, or execute my way into.

I want to make informed, educated decisions and trust that my body and my heart can and will take me everywhere I need to go. Not one or the other. Both. At the same time. I think that is just what it looks like to finally be a whole person — to bring your full intelligence to a decision and then release the outcome to something larger than your planning mind.

I don’t have an answer yet. I’m sitting with the question instead of solving it, which is, for me, its own kind of radical act.

Jules painted me the words before I knew I needed them. That is what real friendship does, it places the answer in the room before you’ve thought to ask the question.

I’m starting to think I’ve always known. I just needed the table, and the tears, and the summer light to finally believe it.

I used to work as a personal trainer. And one of the first things I learned about myself and about every client I ever worked with is that willpower is not the problem.

We all want the sugar. We all want the savory & fatty goodness.

We all want the thing that gives us the hit. That’s not a character flaw, it’s a brain doing exactly what brains do — seeking the fastest route to reward. The question was never whether the craving would show up. The question was always: what did you build around yourself for when it did?

The clients who struggled weren’t lacking discipline. They were living in environments that made the harder choice harder every single time. The ones who shifted — who actually changed — were the ones who stopped negotiating with temptation at the moment of temptation, and started making decisions upstream. Before the craving. Before the hard day. Before the moment when the best version of themselves was the last thing they had access to.

They designed the environment first.

The identity followed.

I’ve been saying this to people for months in conversation, and then earlier this week, I heard it named more precisely on a podcast: the idea that most of us aren’t failing to make good choices. We’re just failing to design lives that make good choices more likely.

We’re crafting environments, physical and digital, that increase the likelihood of temptation and then wonder why we keep ending up in the same place.

There is a cost.

It’s not the bad decision you made on a Tuesday. It’s the cumulative weight of living a life slightly misaligned with who you’re trying to become. It’s the energy spent negotiating with yourself every day. It’s the slow erosion of trust in your own word, the promises you make to yourself that keep getting broken, not because you’re weak, but because you built the conditions for breaking them and called it normal.

That’s what undesigned living actually costs. Not one bad day. A different life than the one you’re meant to have.

Designing your life isn’t a productivity framework. It’s not a morning routine or a vision board.

It’s the ongoing practice of asking honestly whether the environment you’re living in is serving the identity you want to occupy. Your home. Your phone. Your calendar. The conversations you keep having. The content you keep consuming. The rooms you keep walking into.

None of it is neutral. All of it is either working for you or against you.

The question isn’t whether you have enough discipline.

The question is: what are you making easy?

We were seated at the table, enjoying a home-cooked beef biryani (my favorite), my boyfriend’s father across from me, kind and intense as Polish fathers tend to be. The tickets completed downloading on the phone, Mexico City’s Anthropology Museum. Tomorrow, early morning.

“I’m so excited”, I blurted.

He looked up, thinking I was answering the question he had just asked; something about a big presentation I had coming up for a new hospitality client. “Are you nervous? “he had said.

No, I told him, calmly. His eyes widened. “Aren’t you scared? What if it doesn’t go well?”

“I’m excited to learn more”, I said. “To get closer to what the project actually needs. If anything, I’m curious.”

“Even if it’s bad?”

“It can’t be bad. It just helps us get closer to the truth.”

I’ve been sitting with a phrase for the last two weeks. Someone said it simply, and it has found its way into everything since.

Love allows. Fear controls.

It sounds almost too clean. But the more I breathe into it, the more I find it isn’t a motto — it’s a lens. When I look through it, I can see where I’ve been white-knuckling outcomes that weren’t mine to grip. Where I’d been calling vigilance wisdom, and calling control care.

What I’ve found on the other side of that phrase is something that feels less like optimism and more like trust. It doesn’t require things to go a certain way. This kind of trust believes there is no wrong turn, only information. Only the next thing is being revealed.

There is no good or bad data. No light without shadow. No outcome that can’t be leaned into, learned from, or moved through. The presentation will show us something true. The early morning at the museum will show us something true. The conversation at the table, the father’s widened eyes, all of it, true.

Fear asks: What if it goes wrong?

Love asks: What is this trying to show me?

One of those questions closes. The other opens.

I’m choosing, as often as I can remember, the one that opens.
