To me, money is for spending. Not for saving.

Say that out loud and you get a certain look. The look that says: easy for a rich guy.

Wrong. It’s the opposite.

It’s the conclusion of a man who has been burned by money. Badly.

In Japan, telling people what you actually think about money is close to taboo. Talk about it and you’re vulgar. There’s an unspoken idea that modest pay is a virtue.

I think that’s backwards. Money is exactly the subject where the people who’ve lived it owe everyone an honest account.

The world has no shortage of wholesome lectures on saving and secondhand theories on investing. What it’s short on is testimony from someone who actually held a fortune and actually came close to losing it.

So that’s what this is.

Do You Know How Frightening $230,000 Can Be?

Start at the beginning.

When I founded Avex, our capital was 30 million yen, about $230,000 at the exchange rates of 1988.

From where I sit today, honestly, that’s not much money. Back then, it was money that could end me.

And I’d been in business since college. No corporate job to fall back on. No guarantee any of it would work.

You can’t explain that fear to someone who’s never carried real risk.

It finds you at night: what happens if all of this goes up in smoke? There’s no answer. Morning comes anyway. You open the shop and keep moving.

The value of money isn’t the amount. It’s what losing it would do to you.

For one person, $230,000 is their whole life on the table. For another, $100 million is a rounding error. Which is why lecturing other people about how they handle money is a waste of breath.

But I’ll say this much. When the person who carried the risk wins and gets paid well for it, nothing about that is strange.

Lose, and the payout is zero.

The Year They Said I Was Overpaid

Back when Avex was a public company and I ran it, my pay showed up in the annual securities filings: 408 million yen, roughly $4.8 million at the exchange rates of the time.

Japan had only just started requiring companies to name any executive paid more than 100 million yen, the lists ran on the national news, and in this country even a founder catches hell for earning too much.

I knew what people would say. Overpaid. Japanese executives earn a fraction of what American ones do, and a number like that paints a target on your back.

Maybe my own employees thought the same thing. Why does the boss get that much? Pay us instead.

I saw it the other way around.

In a Japanese company, if the CEO makes a million dollars, then nobody in that company will ever make more than a million. No matter how good they are.

Isn’t that bleak?

Set the ceiling low at the top and everyone underneath it learns to stoop. Work hard, deliver, and look how far you can go here. Showing people that is part of a leader’s job. That’s what I believed.

A company where people can talk straight about earning breeds stronger people than one where they apologize for being paid.

Nearly forty years in business, and I haven’t changed my mind.

You Only Get Good With Money by Spending It

While we’re at it: my feel for money was born stocking records.

As a student, I worked at a record-rental shop, a business unique to Japan at the time, where customers rented LPs the way people would later rent videos. Limited cash. Which records do you buy, and how many copies? I sweated that question every single day.

Guess wrong and you’re buried in unsold stock. Guess right and the shop runs. Your own judgment, with money riding on it, day after day after day.

That was the best training I ever got.

A feel for money is built one way: by deciding to spend it, over and over, and living with what happens.

People who only save never get good with money. Of course they don’t. They never practice. Buy a baseball bat, never take a swing, and see if you learn to hit.

So if I have one thing to tell young people, it’s this.

The amount can be small. Spend on your own judgment, and eat the result yourself.

A night out. Books. Paying money to get travel time back. Picking up the check for someone. There’s no right answer. But every time, something stays with you. In Japanese we talk about money that lived and money that died, and you’ll know which yours was. You always do.

Those reps are what carry you later, when you’re in a position to move serious money.

When I bet $230,000 on a company, courage had nothing to do with it. All I had was a little muscle for spending decisions, built stocking those records.

The Illusion That Savings Make You Safe

“You never know what the future holds, so I save.”

I get it. But let me tell you from experience: no amount of money will ever make you safe.

Say you have $100 million.

You’re thinking a hundred million doesn’t just disappear.

It does. In an instant.

Here’s why. The moment you have $100 million, everyone who comes near you has already priced you as the guy with a hundred million.

So the deals arrive in hundred-million sizes. The investments, the ventures, the trouble. All of it scaled to your money.

Nobody pitches a hundred-million-dollar deal to a man with $10,000 in the bank. The man with $100 million hears little else.

That’s why money goes the same way at every size, ten thousand or a hundred million. In an instant.

No book taught me this. I lived it.

There was a stretch of my life when I handed the management of my personal fortune to a friend I trusted.

Trusted. That’s the word to watch. Nobody hands his fortune to a man who looks shady. You hand it over precisely because you trust him.

What went wrong, I’m not going to spell out here. I’ll tell that story properly in a later essay in this series. The result is what matters: I ended up buried in debt. Serious debt.

I worked like an animal to pay it off. A good share of the energy I brought to work in those years came straight from that debt. Put a man’s back against the wall and he works.

Forget the size of the number. Having money is itself what invites the risk.

That, I’ve come to believe, is the true face of money.

Money Rewrites Your Relationships Without Asking

After I nearly lost everything, I trusted people less than ever.

Because in my experience, when someone reaches out saying “I’d love to get together,” it has never once been good news.

That’s a rule of experience, not a joke. If they’re asking to meet, they have business in mind. And the business involves your wallet.

Someone calls my office: “Tell him it’s So-and-so from Such-and-such. He’ll know.” I don’t. They show up anyway, wearing the face of an old friend.

Money rearranges friendships too.

Guys who used to pick fights with me come around bowing and scraping. The pecking order reshuffles itself while you watch.

Nothing changed in me. The people around me changed, all on their own.

I’m used to it now. It rolls off.

But I’ll be honest. It’s an ugly feeling. And a lonely one.

So if you’re going to make it, if money is headed your way, learn this before it arrives.

You won’t be the one who changes. Everyone else will.

And when they change, the people who break are the ones who change right along with them. The moment you mistake the flattery for your own ability, the fall has already started.

Every person I’ve watched money destroy broke the same way. What destroyed them wasn’t the money itself but the change it made in the people around them.

“Because You Spend Whatever You Have”

I once asked the people around me a real question.

“Why do I never have any money?”

And the answer nailed it.

“Because, boss, you spend whatever you have.”

Fair enough.

But I don’t regret it. What I bought with all that money was what I didn’t know.

Places I’d never been, people I’d never met, food I’d never eaten, worlds I’d never seen.

All of it costs money. And all of it, later, turned into judgment I used in business.

A bank balance teaches you nothing. Money you spend turns into experience and becomes part of you.

Save for the future, or spend for the future: which one actually gets you a future? I’ve bet my whole life on the second, and never wavered.

When I was young, it was appetite. Pure wanting. “I want this, I want that” was the engine of my work. Money was a tool for getting things, nothing more.

Then at some point, I’d bought most of the things. So what got fun next?

Spending money on other people.

Take dinner. These days, watching someone eat something extraordinary and light up beats eating it myself.

Written down, that sounds saintly, but it’s nothing that noble.

I do something for someone, they’re happy, and watching them be happy feels good to me. That’s just the wiring.

Which, come to think of it, is the entertainment business itself: delight an audience, watch them light up, and take your reward from their faces.

I’m a showman to the bone. I always was.

Money to Leave Behind vs. Money to Use Up

One last thing, about what comes after.

I’ve thought about my own death. I’ve sat down with the right professionals and asked.

The conclusion was simple.

Leaving more is not better.

Leave behind serious money with no plan attached and the family will fight. Siblings who loved each other become different people the moment the numbers come out. I’ve watched it happen again and again.

Which means money keeps rewriting relationships even after you’re dead.

So no. I’m not going to grit my teeth now to pile up money with no job to do.

While I’m alive, I’ll spend it learning what I don’t know, and on the look on someone’s face when they’re happy. Whatever’s left is what I leave: enough that the people close to me won’t struggle. That’s plenty.

After nearly forty years in business, here’s where I’ve landed on money.

Handy when you have it. A hassle when you don’t. But deeply frightening, all the same.

That’s money.

So today, once again, I won’t save it. I’ll spend it.

To learn what I don’t know. And to watch someone’s face light up.

人們愛說「要抓住機會」。

道理沒錯，只是少了一條最要緊的註腳。

機會出現的時候，從來不長一張機會的臉。

它要是像中獎彩票那樣閃著光躺在地上，誰還用得著別人提醒。真東西樸素得多，也難看得多。

決定我一生的那個機會，是一份時薪430日元的兼職，當時約合1.8美元。而且，我沒被錄用。

Avex 就是從這裡開始的。

我被扔在雨裡的那個晚上

我上大學那幾年，家附近車站大樓的地下，新開了一家唱片出租店，20坪，約65平方米。

租唱片是那個年代日本獨有的生意：花買一張唱片零頭的錢把它租回家，翻錄進磁帶，第二天還回來。

更早些年我迷汽車，那陣子那股勁全轉到了音樂上，舞曲唱片一張接一張地買，一張接一張地聽。所以開業當天我就下去看了一眼。一眼就夠了。

選品太差。這樣開下去不會有客人。讓我來。

我當場開口，說想在這兒打工。

老闆說不行。

店太小，多養一個人都吃力。偏巧那晚下雨，他開車把另外兩個店員一個個送回家。我是騎摩托來的，就我一個留在雨裡，看著車尾燈走遠。

正常人到此為止。

第二天我又去了。第三天還去。名義上是「去玩」，玩著玩著就動手幹活，沒人讓我幹。

時薪0日元。連僱都沒僱。

過了些日子，我聽見老闆臨出門跟店員交代：聽說沿海過去的藤澤有一家全日本營業額第一的唱片出租店，找個時間去看看。

第二天一早，我到了藤澤。

沒人派我去。可當天回到店裡，我把看見的一樣一樣講完，老闆看我的眼神變了。「你小子，還真有股幹勁。」有個店員一直替我說話：這個松浦，必須錄用。老闆終於鬆口。時薪430日元。

我是硬擠進去的。

那扇門不在招聘啟事裡。它就在那家拒絕過我的店裡。

一家快倒的店，掉進了我手裡

我硬擠進去的這家店，每個月虧100萬日元，約合4000美元。

開業第五個月，老闆被資金週轉熬出胃潰瘍，住了院。出院那天，他把我們三個學生叫到跟前：

「我回去做我的本行。這家店，交給你們。」

「真的什麼都能做？」

「能。全交給你們。」

一家快倒的店，整個掉進了幾個大學生手裡。

現在回頭看，那是我這輩子最大的機會之一。可它當時頂著一張「每月虧100萬日元」的臉。

手上能動的錢只有一筆：每週2萬日元的進貨款，約80美元。每週我攥著這筆錢坐車去澀谷，買進口的12吋唱片。

擺上架。沒人租。

我就給每一張手寫一張卡片：曲名，加一段120字左右的推介。還是沒人租。我又做了一份自己的 Top 10。不是全國熱門榜，是我聽、我選、我排名次的，只此一家的榜。奇怪的事發生了：排在第1位的那張，一定被租走。

再往後是推薦貼紙，這張貼三個，那張貼兩個。出租的流水一點點轉了起來。

口碑也傳開了。「那家店不一樣。」橫濱各處的舞曲樂迷開始專程坐車過來。

我讓老闆給我買了兩個計數器

即便這樣，還是打不過鐵道對面那家店。

我去找老闆，讓他買兩個手動計數器，就是做交通流量調查時按一下響一聲的那種。老闆不痛快：「一個不夠？」不夠。我要把客人分成兩類，分開數。

接連好幾天，我坐在能看見對手店門的地方，從早坐到晚，進去一個，按一下。

客流乘客單價倒推回來：對方的月營業額將近550萬日元，約2.3萬美元；我們150萬上下，約6000美元。會員數差了十倍。數字一排開，那個唯一的、致命的差別自己浮了上來。只有我們收入會費，500日元，約2美元。

我們是連鎖店，入會費全國統一，是總部的規矩。我殺到總部去談，答覆是四個字：絕對不行。別的都能商量，入會費一分不動。

行。取消不了，那就還回去。

我換了個名目：租兩張，送兩張。一張唱片一天250日元，兩張正好500日元，和新會員剛交出去的那筆錢分毫不差。賬面上入會費還在，實際上已經沒了。

活動挑在三天連休打出去。店裡從早擠到晚，三天裡進來三千來個新會員。

別人看那地方，看見的是一份打工。我看見的是一地撿不完的數字和打法。

同一個位置站著兩個人，看見的東西可以完全不同。

你現在上班的地方，在有些人眼裡「不過是份工作」，在另一些人眼裡是一座金礦。

嘴上說「我們公司沒機會」的人，換到哪家公司都會說這句話。

看起來沒用的東西，日後會變成武器

在那家店，我有個怪癖。

唱片上印著一行行小字，製作人和作曲家的名字。我能坐在那兒一條條讀下去，讀上幾個鐘頭。

有件事得先說清楚：那時候沒有網際網路。

搜一下名字就能翻出一個人的履歷，那是後來的事。誰在哪個廠牌，誰跟誰搭檔，一起做過哪幾首歌，想知道就只能一張一張把唱片拿起來，用眼睛去啃盤心和封套角落裡的小字，一條條刻進腦子。

Eurobeat（歐陸節拍）的唱片，製作人和作曲家都印在上面。這個流派要是聽著陌生：它脫胎於 Hi-NRG，八十年代初美國同志俱樂部裡長出來的聲音，Miquel Brown 的 “So Many Men, So Little Time”，Evelyn Thomas 的 “High Energy”，都是那一路。後來歐洲把它做成了流行樂，日本聽瘋了。

幾千張讀下來，有些東西會自己浮出來：哪些製作人常和哪些作曲家搭檔，做出好歌的那撥人是什麼「形狀」。

那時候這點本事一日元都不值。它不是證書，也寫不進簡歷。「我背下了幾千張唱片上的小字。」怎麼看都只是個怪人。

幾年之後，我去了義大利，在當地做唱片。

一個日本來的無名小子，憑什麼能在義大利做出唱片？就憑腦子裡那張圖。我照著它去找那幾間錄音室，人真的在那兒，真的在幹活。

沒人要求我攢的這堆廢知識，某一天變成了別人沒有的武器。

日後會變成武器的東西，當時從來不長一副武器的樣子。

拿「有沒有用」去挑要學的東西，最後握在手裡的工具和所有人一樣。只有那些你自己停不下來的「沒用的事」，才長成只屬於你的武器。

資訊藏在沒人肯讀的東西裡

小字的故事有個搭配。

那幾年我讀 Billboard 和 Record Mirror，美國和英國的行業雜誌。日本的音樂雜誌我不看，我要第一手的。

還是那句：沒有網際網路。海外的訊息不會自己流到你手邊。你得弄到進口的實體雜誌，自己去啃英文的榜單和報道。「查一件事」本身就要花掉實打實的時間和力氣。

正因為費勁，那個年頭查的人和不查的人，差得遠。

在日本，想跟上西洋音樂，通行的做法是等日本雜誌翻譯過來。結果就是：和所有人拿到一樣的東西，還比所有人晚。

手裡資訊一樣的人之間，拉不開距離。

距離拉開在另一種人身上：他去讀所有人嫌麻煩、懶得讀的東西。還沒人翻譯的行業雜誌。唱片角落上印的那幾行小字。誰都拿得到，誰都不看。資訊就躺在那兒，還不歸任何人。

今天有網際網路，這些事一秒鐘就辦完。可不查的人照樣不查。變方便的只是工具，查的人和不查的人這道分界，跟當年一模一樣，一釐米也沒挪。

我們嘴裡的「機會」，一半只是資訊的時間差。比別人早半年知道一件事，和才華起同樣的作用。

在所有人掉頭回去的那天，你去

時間差的故事有下文。

1991年1月，我動身去法國的一個音樂行業展會。離開日本那天，是海灣戰爭開打的第二天。

開戰前都說美國會速勝。真打起來，誰也說不準什麼時候能停。

我在巴黎中轉的時候接到訊息：本來要從紐約飛過來會合的公司最高負責人，暫緩出發。我嚇了一跳，電話打過去，最後還是請他從紐約過來了。

各家公司下出差禁令，大概就是第二天前後的事。差一天，我也走不成。

展會上幾乎見不到日本唱片公司的人，至少我一個都沒碰上。美國音樂圈的人也稀稀落落。我提前到場，把那幾天全用來和歐洲廠牌的人坐下來談。

整個會場都在嚷同一個詞：Techno。聽著有意思，我就能聽的全聽了，看得上的曲子版權一口氣買下，帶回日本。

等別家公司注意到 Techno，值錢的授權差不多都在我們手裡了。那年5月，Juliana’s Tokyo 開業，就是後來成了九十年代初日本一個符號的巨型迪斯科舞廳。我買回來的曲子在那間舞池裡響起來，Techno 燒了起來。

那個機會當時長什麼樣？

頂著一張「在打仗，出差取消吧」的臉。

跟著所有人做同一個判斷，一點風險都不用擔。代價是，你拿到的東西也和所有人一樣。

一群人集體掉頭回去的地方，同時是競爭對手為零的地方。

話說在前面，我不是讓人照著做。今天幹同樣的事，只會被叫作胡來。當年我年輕，公司小，沒什麼可輸的。是那個時代和那個位置給了我這點餘地。

我想留給你的是背後那個結構：所有人朝同一個方向掉頭，另一邊就空了。

它也不挑場合。經濟下行，行業逆風，哪個年代它都以同樣的形狀出現。

門只開一瞬間

機會還有一個刻薄的地方：門開著的時間短得離譜。

我和小室哲哉的第一次見面就是這樣。這個名字要是陌生：他當時是日本最大牌樂隊之一 TM NETWORK 的主腦，後來成了定義九十年代日本流行樂的製作人。

那陣子我一門心思要做 TM NETWORK 歌曲的 Eurobeat 翻唱版，非做不可。公司的人磨了半年，談到最後一步，由我出面見小室本人。

坐下來，他說了一句：

「像 Avex 這麼新、這麼酷的唱片公司，去做 TM 的歌，不會反倒不酷了嗎？」

這話可以聽成一句客氣的拒絕。我聽出來的是：他還沒能完全信我們。當時腦子裡只剩一個念頭，要扎進這個人的世界，就是現在。

所以我當場答了。

「我們一定把它做得夠酷。」

一點依據都沒有。有的只是一個把幾千首 Eurobeat 聽到爛的人的底氣。

那張翻唱專輯衝到 Oricon 公信榜第4名。Oricon 就是日本的公告牌。一家沒人叫得出名字的小公司拿出了數字，路就此開啟。後面的事，在日本算是人人知道。

那天要是我說「我帶回去研究研究」，什麼都不會發生。

門開的那一瞬間，跳得進去的只有已經準備完的人。

跳進去時說什麼，永遠是同一句：我們能做。圓場的事，之後拼了命去補。

我本來要去當銀行職員

最後講一個頂著最怪一張臉的機會。

還在店裡打工的時候，我的去向已經定了：進橫濱銀行。

攔下我的是那家店的老闆。有意思的地方在於，他自己的父親就是橫濱銀行的董事。一個出自最懂銀行的人家的人，幾乎天天在車裡對我念同一段話：

「銀行就算了吧。當上班族你也許能幹得不錯，可自己做生意，有意思得多。」

某天在老家，我爸忽然冒出一句：「有沒有什麼有意思的生意？」

有啊，我說。唱片出租。

這門生意賺錢，我比誰都清楚，數字是我一筆筆親手看過來的。進貨壓在營業額的兩成上下，店就能轉，毛利八成。

老闆和我爸一人拿出1000萬日元，當時約合5萬美元，公司就成立了，我當社長。二十一歲，一個還在唸書的社長。順著這條路一直走下去，就是後來的 Avex。一家唱片出租公司怎麼變成 Avex，這段故事留到別的篇章再寫。

請記住這一切是從哪兒起的頭。一次打工應聘，被刷了。

那個雨夜我要是決定「再也不去了」，Avex 就不存在。

機會不只以事件的形態上門。有時候它長著一張多管閒事的臉，天天在你耳邊說同一句話。

西方有句老話：機會女神只有額前一撮頭髮，她迎面走來時你就得一把抓住，因為腦後光溜溜的，沒有可抓的地方。

要我說，實情比這更狠。

機會女神，是喬裝打扮來的。

她來找我的那幾回，頂著打工被拒的臉，頂著每月虧100萬日元的臉，頂著開戰第二天登機的臉，頂著一句客氣拒絕的臉。

所以，別再滿地找發光的東西。

眼前那個不起眼的、看著倒黴的東西，誰把它看得比誰都有意思，誰才會在若干年後等來那句遲到的答案：原來，那就是機會。

我换了个名目：租两张，送两张。一张唱片一天250日元，两张正好500日元，和新会员刚交出去的那笔钱分毫不差。账面上入会费还在，实际上已经没了。

活动挑在三天连休打出去。店里从早挤到晚，三天里进来三千来个新会员。

别人看那地方，看见的是一份打工。我看见的是一地捡不完的数字和打法。

同一个位置站着两个人，看见的东西可以完全不同。

你现在上班的地方，在有些人眼里「不过是份工作」，在另一些人眼里是一座金矿。

嘴上说「我们公司没机会」的人，换到哪家公司都会说这句话。

看起来没用的东西，日后会变成武器

在那家店，我有个怪癖。

唱片上印着一行行小字，制作人和作曲家的名字。我能坐在那儿一条条读下去，读上几个钟头。

有件事得先说清楚：那时候没有互联网。

搜一下名字就能翻出一个人的履历，那是后来的事。谁在哪个厂牌，谁跟谁搭档，一起做过哪几首歌，想知道就只能一张一张把唱片拿起来，用眼睛去啃盘心和封套角落里的小字，一条条刻进脑子。

Eurobeat（欧陆节拍）的唱片，制作人和作曲家都印在上面。这个流派要是听着陌生：它脱胎于 Hi-NRG，八十年代初美国同志俱乐部里长出来的声音，Miquel Brown 的 “So Many Men, So Little Time”，Evelyn Thomas 的 “High Energy”，都是那一路。后来欧洲把它做成了流行乐，日本听疯了。

几千张读下来，有些东西会自己浮出来：哪些制作人常和哪些作曲家搭档，做出好歌的那拨人是什么「形状」。

那时候这点本事一日元都不值。它不是证书，也写不进简历。「我背下了几千张唱片上的小字。」怎么看都只是个怪人。

几年之后，我去了意大利，在当地做唱片。

一个日本来的无名小子，凭什么能在意大利做出唱片？就凭脑子里那张图。我照着它去找那几间录音室，人真的在那儿，真的在干活。

没人要求我攒的这堆废知识，某一天变成了别人没有的武器。

日后会变成武器的东西，当时从来不长一副武器的样子。

拿「有没有用」去挑要学的东西，最后握在手里的工具和所有人一样。只有那些你自己停不下来的「没用的事」，才长成只属于你的武器。

信息藏在没人肯读的东西里

小字的故事有个搭配。

那几年我读 Billboard 和 Record Mirror，美国和英国的行业杂志。日本的音乐杂志我不看，我要第一手的。

还是那句：没有互联网。海外的消息不会自己流到你手边。你得弄到进口的实体杂志，自己去啃英文的榜单和报道。「查一件事」本身就要花掉实打实的时间和力气。

正因为费劲，那个年头查的人和不查的人，差得远。

在日本，想跟上西洋音乐，通行的做法是等日本杂志翻译过来。结果就是：和所有人拿到一样的东西，还比所有人晚。

手里信息一样的人之间，拉不开距离。

距离拉开在另一种人身上：他去读所有人嫌麻烦、懒得读的东西。还没人翻译的行业杂志。唱片角落上印的那几行小字。谁都拿得到，谁都不看。信息就躺在那儿，还不归任何人。

今天有互联网，这些事一秒钟就办完。可不查的人照样不查。变方便的只是工具，查的人和不查的人这道分界，跟当年一模一样，一厘米也没挪。

我们嘴里的「机会」，一半只是信息的时间差。比别人早半年知道一件事，和才华起同样的作用。

在所有人掉头回去的那天，你去

时间差的故事有下文。

1991年1月，我动身去法国的一个音乐行业展会。离开日本那天，是海湾战争开打的第二天。

开战前都说美国会速胜。真打起来，谁也说不准什么时候能停。

我在巴黎中转的时候接到消息：本来要从纽约飞过来会合的公司最高负责人，暂缓出发。我吓了一跳，电话打过去，最后还是请他从纽约过来了。

各家公司下出差禁令，大概就是第二天前后的事。差一天，我也走不成。

展会上几乎见不到日本唱片公司的人，至少我一个都没碰上。美国音乐圈的人也稀稀落落。我提前到场，把那几天全用来和欧洲厂牌的人坐下来谈。

整个会场都在嚷同一个词：Techno。听着有意思，我就能听的全听了，看得上的曲子版权一口气买下，带回日本。

等别家公司注意到 Techno，值钱的授权差不多都在我们手里了。那年5月，Juliana’s Tokyo 开业，就是后来成了九十年代初日本一个符号的巨型迪斯科舞厅。我买回来的曲子在那间舞池里响起来，Techno 烧了起来。

那个机会当时长什么样？

顶着一张「在打仗，出差取消吧」的脸。

跟着所有人做同一个判断，一点风险都不用担。代价是，你拿到的东西也和所有人一样。

一群人集体掉头回去的地方，同时是竞争对手为零的地方。

话说在前面，我不是让人照着做。今天干同样的事，只会被叫作胡来。当年我年轻，公司小，没什么可输的。是那个时代和那个位置给了我这点余地。

我想留给你的是背后那个结构：所有人朝同一个方向掉头，另一边就空了。

它也不挑场合。经济下行，行业逆风，哪个年代它都以同样的形状出现。

门只开一瞬间

机会还有一个刻薄的地方：门开着的时间短得离谱。

我和小室哲哉的第一次见面就是这样。这个名字要是陌生：他当时是日本最大牌乐队之一 TM NETWORK 的主脑，后来成了定义九十年代日本流行乐的制作人。

那阵子我一门心思要做 TM NETWORK 歌曲的 Eurobeat 翻唱版，非做不可。公司的人磨了半年，谈到最后一步，由我出面见小室本人。

坐下来，他说了一句：

「像 Avex 这么新、这么酷的唱片公司，去做 TM 的歌，不会反倒不酷了吗？」

这话可以听成一句客气的拒绝。我听出来的是：他还没能完全信我们。当时脑子里只剩一个念头，要扎进这个人的世界，就是现在。

所以我当场答了。

「我们一定把它做得够酷。」

一点依据都没有。有的只是一个把几千首 Eurobeat 听到烂的人的底气。

那张翻唱专辑冲到 Oricon 公信榜第4名。Oricon 就是日本的公告牌。一家没人叫得出名字的小公司拿出了数字，路就此打开。后面的事，在日本算是人人知道。

那天要是我说「我带回去研究研究」，什么都不会发生。

门开的那一瞬间，跳得进去的只有已经准备完的人。

跳进去时说什么，永远是同一句：我们能做。圆场的事，之后拼了命去补。

我本来要去当银行职员

最后讲一个顶着最怪一张脸的机会。

还在店里打工的时候，我的去向已经定了：进横滨银行。

拦下我的是那家店的老板。有意思的地方在于，他自己的父亲就是横滨银行的董事。一个出自最懂银行的人家的人，几乎天天在车里对我念同一段话：

「银行就算了吧。当上班族你也许能干得不错，可自己做生意，有意思得多。」

某天在老家，我爸忽然冒出一句：「有没有什么有意思的生意？」

有啊，我说。唱片出租。

这门生意赚钱，我比谁都清楚，数字是我一笔笔亲手看过来的。进货压在营业额的两成上下，店就能转，毛利八成。

老板和我爸一人拿出1000万日元，当时约合5万美元，公司就成立了，我当社长。二十一岁，一个还在念书的社长。顺着这条路一直走下去，就是后来的 Avex。一家唱片出租公司怎么变成 Avex，这段故事留到别的篇章再写。

请记住这一切是从哪儿起的头。一次打工应聘，被刷了。

那个雨夜我要是决定「再也不去了」，Avex 就不存在。

机会不只以事件的形态上门。有时候它长着一张多管闲事的脸，天天在你耳边说同一句话。

西方有句老话：机会女神只有额前一撮头发，她迎面走来时你就得一把抓住，因为脑后光溜溜的，没有可抓的地方。

要我说，实情比这更狠。

机会女神，是乔装打扮来的。

她来找我的那几回，顶着打工被拒的脸，顶着每月亏100万日元的脸，顶着开战第二天登机的脸，顶着一句客气拒绝的脸。

所以，别再满地找发光的东西。

眼前那个不起眼的、看着倒霉的东西，谁把它看得比谁都有意思，谁才会在若干年后等来那句迟到的答案：原来，那就是机会。

Todo el mundo repite lo mismo: aprovecha las oportunidades.

De acuerdo. Yo he aprovechado unas cuantas, y al consejo le falta la única nota al pie que importa.

La oportunidad no se presenta con cara de oportunidad.

Si estuvieran tiradas por el suelo, brillando como monedas en la acera, nadie necesitaría que le explicaran cómo recogerlas. La oportunidad de verdad es más sosa. Y más fea.

La mía fue un rechazo: un empleo por horas de 430 yenes, algo así como 1,80 dólares al cambio de entonces, que no me dieron.

Ahí empieza Avex.

La noche de lluvia en que me dejaron atrás

En mi época universitaria abrieron una tienda de alquiler de discos en el sótano del edificio de la estación, cerca de mi casa. Unos 65 metros cuadrados. Alquilar discos era un negocio muy japonés en aquellos años: pagabas una fracción del precio del vinilo, te lo llevabas a casa, lo grababas en casete y lo devolvías.

De adolescente me habían vuelto loco los coches. Para entonces la obsesión era otra: la música. Compraba discos de música dance a montones y los gastaba de tanto escucharlos. Entré el día de la inauguración y en un minuto lo tuve claro: el catálogo era un desastre. Así no iba a entrar nadie. Déjeme llevar la tienda a mí.

Pedí trabajo ahí mismo.

Me dijeron que no.

Una tienda tan pequeña no podía pagar a nadie más. Y esa noche llovía. El dueño llevó en coche a sus dos empleados hasta la puerta de su casa. Yo había ido en moto, así que me quedé bajo la lluvia viéndolos marchar.

Lo normal es no volver.

Volví al día siguiente. Y al otro. “De visita.” Y me puse a trabajar en la tienda sin que nadie me lo pidiera.

Cero yenes la hora. Ni contratado estaba.

Una tarde oí al dueño decirle al personal, ya de salida, que al parecer la tienda de alquiler con más ventas del país estaba en Fujisawa, más abajo en la costa, y que alguien debería ir a verla.

A la mañana siguiente estaba allí.

Nadie me había mandado. Pero volví ese mismo día con el informe completo y el dueño me miró de otra manera. “Oye, tú sí que tienes ganas.” Uno de los empleados no soltó el tema: hay que contratar a Matsuura. Y me contrató. 430 yenes la hora.

Me metí en el equipo a la fuerza.

La puerta no estaba en los anuncios de empleo. Estaba dentro de la tienda que me había dicho que no.

La úlcera del dueño

La tienda en la que me había metido a la fuerza perdía un millón de yenes al mes. Unos 4.000 dólares.

Al quinto mes de abrir, el estrés de sostenerla le abrió una úlcera al dueño y lo mandó al hospital. Cuando salió, nos sentó a los tres, tres universitarios, y dijo:

“Yo me vuelvo a mi negocio de siempre. La tienda es de ustedes.”

“¿En serio podemos hacer lo que queramos?”

“Lo que quieran. Toda suya.”

Una tienda en quiebra acababa de caer entera en manos de unos estudiantes.

Mirándolo hoy, fue una de las mayores oportunidades de mi vida. Solo que en aquel momento venía con la cara de un millón de yenes en números rojos cada mes.

Para reponer discos teníamos 20.000 yenes a la semana. Cada semana me iba con ese dinero hasta Shibuya y lo gastaba entero en maxis de doce pulgadas de importación.

Los ponía en la estantería. Nadie los tocaba.

Así que escribí a mano una ficha para cada disco: el título y un comentario de unas 120 letras. Seguían sin moverse. Entonces monté nuestro propio Top 10, al margen de las listas nacionales de éxitos. Yo escuchaba, yo elegía, yo decidía el orden. La lista de la casa. Y pasó algo curioso: lo que yo pusiera en el número 1 se alquilaba siempre. Siempre.

Empecé a pegar adhesivos de recomendación en las fundas, tres en este, dos en aquel, y los alquileres se movieron.

Después trabajó el boca a boca. “Esa tienda es otra cosa.” Los aficionados a la música dance empezaron a cruzar Yokohama entera para llegar hasta nosotros.

Dos contadores manuales

Aun así, no le ganábamos a la tienda rival del otro lado de las vías.

Le pedí al dueño que me comprara dos contadores manuales, de los que se usan para contar coches en un cruce. Se resistió. “¿No te basta con uno?” No me bastaba. Iba a contar dos tipos de cliente por separado.

Durante días me planté a la vista de la tienda rival, de la mañana a la noche, haciendo clic con cada persona que entraba.

Multiplicando el número de clientes por el gasto medio, a ellos les salían algo menos de 5,5 millones de yenes al mes, unos 23.000 dólares, y a nosotros 1,5 millones, unos 6.000. Tenían diez veces más socios que nosotros. Y solo con las cifras puestas una junto a otra apareció la única debilidad decisiva: éramos los únicos que cobrábamos cuota de inscripción. 500 yenes.

Pertenecíamos a una cadena, y la cadena fijaba esa cuota para todo el país. Me presenté en la central a negociar y me dijeron que de ninguna manera: la cuota de inscripción no se tocaba.

De acuerdo. Si no me dejaban quitarla, la iba a devolver. Montamos otra campaña: alquila dos discos y te llevas otros dos gratis. Un disco costaba 250 yenes al día, así que dos salían por quinientos, exactamente lo que acababas de pagar para hacerte socio. Sobre el papel la cuota seguía intacta. En la práctica había dejado de existir.

La lanzamos en un puente de tres días. La tienda no se vació ni un momento, de la mañana a la noche. En esos tres días se hicieron socias unas tres mil personas.

Los demás miraban ese sitio y veían un empleo a tiempo parcial. Yo miraba y veía un suelo cubierto de números y de jugadas que nadie se agachaba a recoger.

Dos personas pueden pisar el mismo suelo y ver cosas completamente distintas.

El lugar donde trabajas hoy es “un empleo” para alguien y una mina de oro para otro.

El que dice “en mi empresa no hay oportunidades” lo va a decir en todas las empresas.

La letra pequeña de la funda

En esa tienda yo tenía una manía rara.

Los créditos. Los nombres impresos en letra diminuta en cada disco, productores y compositores. Me sentaba a leerlos durante horas.

Conviene recordar una cosa: internet no existía.

No podías buscar el nombre de un productor y sacar su trayectoria. Quién estaba en qué sello, quién trabajaba con quién, qué habían hecho juntos. Si querías saberlo, ibas disco por disco, leías la letra pequeña de la etiqueta y de la esquina de la portada, y lo archivabas en la cabeza.

Los discos de eurobeat acreditan a su productor y a su compositor. Si el género no te dice nada: el eurobeat salió del Hi-NRG, el sonido de los clubes gais de Estados Unidos a principios de los ochenta. “So Many Men, So Little Time”, de Miquel Brown. “High Energy”, de Evelyn Thomas. Europa lo convirtió en pop y Japón lo devoró. Repasa la letra pequeña de unos cuantos miles de esos discos y empieza a aflorar un patrón.

Qué productor se junta con qué compositor. Un mapa de quién estaba haciendo las buenas canciones. Se ve.

Aclaro cuánto valía ese conocimiento entonces: nada. Ni un yen. Tampoco era un título ni algo que se pudiera poner en un currículum. “Me sé de memoria la letra pequeña de varios miles de discos.” Por cualquier medida razonable, yo no era más que un tipo raro.

Unos años después acabé cruzando a Italia a hacer discos allí.

¿Cómo graba discos en Italia un don nadie recién llegado de Japón? Seguí el mapa que llevaba en la cabeza. Fui a los estudios donde parecía probable que estuviera esa gente. Y estaba. Trabajando, allí mismo.

Nadie me pidió que acumulara nada de aquello. Y un día se convirtió en una ventaja que no tenía nadie más.

Lo que después se vuelve un arma nunca parece un arma en su momento.

Si eliges qué aprender según lo útil que parezca, terminas con las mismas herramientas que todos los demás. Las únicas armas que son tuyas y de nadie más salen de las cosas “inútiles” que hiciste porque no podías evitarlo.

Billboard y Record Mirror

Con la historia de los créditos va otra.

Yo leía Billboard y Record Mirror, las revistas del sector en Estados Unidos y en Gran Bretaña. Iba a las fuentes de origen, en su idioma, en lugar de a las revistas japonesas de música.

También esto es anterior a internet. La información del extranjero no llegaba sola: había que conseguir el ejemplar importado en papel y abrirse paso a solas por las listas y los artículos en inglés. Buscar costaba tiempo y esfuerzo de verdad, y por eso la distancia entre el que buscaba y el que no era incomparablemente mayor que hoy.

En Japón lo habitual, para seguir la música extranjera, era esperar a que una revista japonesa la tradujera y te la contara. Recibías la misma información que todos, más tarde que todos.

Entre personas que manejan la misma información no se abre ninguna distancia. La distancia se abre para quien lee lo que a los demás les da pereza. Revistas del sector que nadie ha traducido todavía. Créditos impresos en un rincón de un disco. Cualquiera los tiene al alcance de la mano. Nadie lo hace. Ahí es exactamente donde está la información mientras todavía no es de nadie.

Hoy existe internet y todo esto se resuelve en un segundo. Y aun así, el que no busca sigue sin buscar. Cambió la herramienta; el reparto entre los que escarban y los que esperan sigue igual que aquellos días.

La mitad de lo que llamamos oportunidad es un simple desfase de información. Saber algo seis meses antes rinde lo mismo que el talento.

Una feria vacía en Francia

La historia del desfase tiene una segunda parte.

En enero de 1991 salí hacia una feria de la industria musical en Francia. Dejé Japón al día siguiente de que empezara la Guerra del Golfo.

Todos decían que aquello se acabaría rápido con una victoria estadounidense, pero, una vez que empezó, nadie era ya capaz de decir cuándo iba a terminar. Yo estaba haciendo escala en París cuando me llegó el aviso del que era entonces el máximo directivo de la empresa, que tenía que unirse a mí desde Nueva York: estaba aplazando su salida. Me alarmé tanto que lo llamé por teléfono, y al final vino desde Nueva York. Si no recuerdo mal, las empresas japonesas prohibieron en bloque los viajes de trabajo al extranjero al día siguiente o por ahí. Un día de diferencia y yo tampoco habría ido.

De discográficas japonesas, por la feria apenas se vio ninguna. Yo, desde luego, no me crucé con una sola. Y de la industria estadounidense, casi nadie. Yo entré antes que nadie y me puse a hablar con la gente de los sellos europeos.

En el recinto entero no se hablaba de otra cosa: techno. Sonaba interesante, así que escuché todo lo que pude, compré en bloque los derechos de lo que prometía y volví a casa.

Cuando las demás discográficas se enteraron del techno, nosotros ya teníamos casi todas las licencias que valían algo. Aquel mayo abrió Juliana’s Tokyo, la discoteca descomunal que acabó definiendo el Japón de principios de los noventa, y los temas que yo había comprado llenaron la pista. El techno estalló.

¿Qué cara traía aquella oportunidad?

Traía la cara de “hay una guerra, cancelemos el viaje”.

Decide lo mismo que todos y no corres ningún riesgo. A cambio, recibes lo mismo que todos.

El lugar que abandona la multitud entera es también el lugar donde no queda un solo rival.

Que quede claro: no te estoy diciendo que copies esto. Si alguien repite hoy esa jugada, eso ya no tiene otro nombre que imprudencia. Yo era joven, la empresa era pequeña y no tenía casi nada que perder. Lo permitía la época, y lo permitía mi puesto.

Lo que quiero dejarte no es el gesto. Es la estructura. Cuando todos retroceden en la misma dirección, el lado contrario se queda vacío.

Y esa estructura no necesita una guerra. Una recesión, un sector con el viento en contra: cada época deja su propio hueco, siempre con la misma forma.

La pregunta de Tetsuya Komuro

La oportunidad tiene otro rasgo cruel: la puerta se queda abierta un tiempo ridículamente corto.

Mi primera reunión con Tetsuya Komuro fue exactamente eso. Komuro era entonces el líder de TM NETWORK, uno de los grupos más grandes de Japón, y con los años se convirtió en el productor que definió el pop japonés de los noventa.

Yo quería una cosa por encima de cualquier otra: hacer versiones en eurobeat de las canciones de TM NETWORK. Nuestra gente llevaba medio año negociándolo y, en la fase final, me tocaba a mí sentarme con Komuro.

En esa reunión dijo:

“¿Una discográfica nueva y cool como Avex, versionando precisamente canciones de TM? ¿No van a quedar poco cool?”

Se podía oír como un no cortés. Yo oí a un hombre que todavía no se fiaba de nosotros. Y pensé: si alguna vez voy a ganarme a este señor, es ahora.

Respondí en el acto.

“Lo vamos a hacer cool. Se lo garantizo.”

No tenía una sola prueba. Tenía el aplomo de alguien que se había escuchado miles de temas de eurobeat.

Ese disco de versiones entró en la lista de Oricon, el Billboard japonés. Una discográfica minúscula que nadie sabía situar acababa de colocar un disco en el número cuatro, y las puertas empezaron a abrirse. El resto de la historia, al menos en Japón, ya se lo sabe todo el mundo.

Si en aquella mesa hubiera dicho “déjenme llevarlo a la oficina y estudiarlo”, no habría empezado nada.

Cuando la puerta se abre, solo la cruzan los que terminaron de prepararse antes de que se abriera.

Y la frase que se dice al saltar es siempre la misma: “Podemos hacerlo.” Las cuentas se cuadran después, aunque cueste la vida.

Yo iba a ser banquero

La última. La oportunidad que venía con el disfraz más raro de todos.

En mis años de tienda yo tenía el camino resuelto: la banca. Iba a entrar en el Banco de Yokohama.

Quien me lo quitó de la cabeza fue el dueño de la tienda. Y aquí está lo gracioso: su propio padre era directivo de ese mismo banco. El hombre criado en la familia que mejor conocía la banca me repetía casi a diario, en aquellos viajes de vuelta en coche:

“Olvídate del banco. Igual te va bien de asalariado. Pero llevar tu propio negocio es mucho más interesante.”

Y un día, en casa, mi padre soltó de la nada: “¿No conoces algún negocio interesante?”

Sí, le dije. El alquiler de discos.

Sabía que dejaba dinero. Lo sabía mejor que nadie, porque había manejado las cifras con mis propias manos. Mantén la compra de material en torno al veinte por ciento de las ventas y una tienda de alquiler de discos funciona. Es un negocio con un ochenta por ciento de margen bruto.

El dueño y mi padre pusieron 10 millones de yenes cada uno, unos 50.000 dólares por cabeza en aquella época, y montamos una empresa. Yo fui el presidente. Veintiún años, presidente y universitario. En el extremo lejano de esa misma línea está Avex. Cómo una empresa de alquiler de discos terminó siendo Avex es historia para otro de estos ensayos.

Recuerda dónde empezó todo esto. Un rechazo para un trabajo de nada.

Si aquella noche de lluvia hubiera decidido no volver, Avex no existiría.

La oportunidad no llega solamente en forma de acontecimiento. A veces llega en forma de persona entrometida que te repite lo mismo todos los santos días.

Hay un dicho antiguo: a la ocasión la pintan calva, con un único mechón por delante. Hay que agarrarla de frente, porque por detrás no queda nada de donde sujetarla.

Si me preguntas a mí, es peor que eso.

La diosa de la ocasión llega disfrazada.

Cuando vino a verme traía la cara de una solicitud de empleo rechazada, la cara de un millón de yenes de pérdidas al mes, la cara de un vuelo que salió al día siguiente del comienzo de una guerra, la cara de un no cortés.

Así que deja de barrer el suelo con la mirada buscando algo que brille.

Eso gris que tienes delante, eso que parece pura mala suerte: quien lo mire con más curiosidad que nadie será el único que reciba, años más tarde, la respuesta correcta. Así que aquello era la oportunidad.

Everyone tells you to seize your chances.

Fine. But I’ve actually seized a few, and the advice is missing the one footnote that matters.

Opportunity doesn’t show up looking like opportunity.

If chances lay around glowing like winning lottery tickets, nobody would need advice on grabbing them. The real thing is plainer than that. Uglier, too.

Mine was a rejection. The chance that decided my life was a part-time job paying 430 yen an hour, about a buck eighty in those days, and I didn’t get it.

Avex starts there.

The Rainy Night They Left Me Behind

When I was in college, a record-rental shop opened in the basement of the station building near my house. Seven hundred square feet, give or take. Renting records was a peculiar Japanese business back then: you rented an LP for a fraction of its price, taped it at home, and brought it back.

As a teenager I’d been crazy about cars, but by then the fever had moved to music. I was buying dance records by the armload and wearing them out. So I walked in on opening day and knew within a minute: the selection was garbage. Nobody was going to come for this. Let me run it.

I asked for a job on the spot.

No.

A shop that small couldn’t afford another body. And it was raining that night. The owner drove his two staffers home in his car. I’d come on a motorbike, so I stood in the rain and watched them go.

A normal person doesn’t come back.

I came back the next day. And the day after that. “Just hanging out.” Then I started helping run the place. Nobody had asked me to.

Zero yen an hour. Not hired. Not even close.

One evening I overheard the owner tell his staff on his way out: supposedly the top-grossing rental shop in the country was in Fujisawa, down the coast from us. Somebody ought to go take a look.

I was there the next morning.

Nobody sent me. But I came back to the shop that same day with a full report, and the owner looked at me differently. “You know, you’ve really got some drive.” One of the staffers wouldn’t let it drop: you have to hire Matsuura. So he finally did. 430 yen an hour.

I forced my way in.

The door wasn’t in the help-wanted ads. It was inside the shop that said no.

A Failing Shop Lands in My Lap

Now, the shop I’d forced my way into was losing a million yen a month. Call it four thousand dollars.

In its fifth month, the stress of keeping it alive gave the owner a stomach ulcer and put him in the hospital. When he got out, he sat the three of us down, three college kids, and said:

“I’m going back to my real business. This shop is yours now.”

“We can really do whatever we want?”

“Go ahead. All of it.”

A failing shop had just landed, whole, in the laps of a few students.

Looking back, it was one of the biggest opportunities of my life. Except at the time, it wore the face of a million yen of red ink every month.

All we had to work with was 20,000 yen a week for new stock. Eighty dollars. Every week I took that money to Shibuya and spent it on import twelve-inches.

I put them on the shelves. Nobody touched them.

So I hand-wrote a card for every record: the title, plus a capsule review, 120 characters or so. Still nothing. So I built our own Top 10. Not the national hit chart. I did the listening, I did the picking, I did the ranking. The shop’s own chart. And a funny thing happened: whatever sat at No. 1 always got rented. Always.

I started sticking recommendation stickers on the sleeves, three on this one, two on that one, and the rentals began to turn.

Then word of mouth took over. “That shop is something else.” Dance-music fans started crossing Yokohama to get to us.

Two Tally Counters

Even so, we couldn’t beat the rival shop on the other side of the train tracks.

So I asked the owner to buy me two tally counters, the clickers they use for traffic surveys. He balked. “Won’t one do?” It wouldn’t. I was going to count two kinds of customers separately.

For days I planted myself within sight of the rival shop, morning to night, clicking off everyone who walked in.

Customer counts times average spend: their sales came out just under 5.5 million yen a month, about $23,000. Ours ran around 1.5 million yen, about $6,000. They had ten times our members. And only with the numbers laid side by side did the one decisive weakness show itself. We were the only ones charging a sign-up fee. Five hundred yen. Two dollars.

We belonged to a chain, and the chain fixed that fee nationwide. I marched into headquarters and argued for scrapping it. Absolutely not, they said. The sign-up fee was the one thing they would never let anyone touch.

Fine. If I couldn’t get rid of it, I could give it back.

So I built a different campaign. Rent two records, get two free. A record was 250 yen a day, so two of them came to 500 yen. Exactly what a new member had just handed over to join. On the books the sign-up fee was still there. In practice it was gone.

We ran it over a three-day holiday weekend. The shop was jammed open to close, and about 3,000 people signed up in those three days.

Everyone else looked at that place and saw a part-time job. I looked at it and saw a floor littered with numbers and moves that nobody was bothering to pick up.

Two people can stand in the same spot and see entirely different things.

People who say “there’s no opportunity at my company” say it at every company.

Useless Knowledge Becomes a Weapon Later

At that shop, I had a strange habit.

The credits. The names printed small on every record, the producers and composers. I would sit and read them for hours.

Here’s the part you have to remember: the internet did not exist.

You couldn’t search a producer’s name and pull up a career. Who was at which label, who worked with whom, what they’d made together. If you wanted to know, you picked up records one at a time, read the fine print on the label and the corner of the jacket with your own eyes, and filed it in your head.

Eurobeat records credit their producers and composers. If the genre means nothing to you: Eurobeat grew out of Hi-NRG, the sound of America’s gay clubs in the early eighties. Think Miquel Brown’s “So Many Men, So Little Time,” or Evelyn Thomas’s “High Energy.” Europe turned it into pop, and Japan devoured it. Read a few thousand of those records and a pattern starts to surface.

Which producers pair with which composers. A map of who was making the good songs. You start to see it.

Let me be clear about what this knowledge was worth at the time: nothing. Not one yen. It’s not a credential. You can’t put it on a résumé. “I’ve memorized the fine print on a few thousand records.” By any normal measure, I was just a weird guy.

Then, a few years later, I went to Italy to make records myself.

How does a young nobody from Japan make records in Italy? I followed the map in my head. I went to the studios where the people who made the good songs seemed likely to be, and they were there. Actually there, working.

Nobody asked me to stockpile any of it. Then one day it was an edge nobody else had.

The things that become weapons later never look like weapons at the time.

If you pick what to learn by what looks useful, you end up holding the same tools as everyone else. The only weapons that are yours alone come out of the “useless” things you did because you couldn’t help yourself.

Information Hides in What Nobody Bothers to Read

There’s a second story that belongs with the credits.

Back then I read Billboard and Record Mirror, the American and British music trades. Not Japanese music magazines. The source material. Foreign information didn’t come to you in those days. You got hold of an imported copy and worked through the English charts yourself. The normal way to follow Western music in Japan was to wait for the Japanese magazines to translate it for you. So you got the same information as everyone else, later than everyone else.

Between people holding the same information, no gap opens. The gap opens for the person reading what everyone else can’t be bothered to read. Trade magazines nobody has translated yet. Credits printed small in the corner of a record. Anyone could pick them up. Nobody does. That’s exactly where information sits while it still belongs to no one.

Today the internet exists and all of this takes a second. And still, the people who don’t look things up don’t look things up. Half of what we call opportunity is just a time lag in information. Knowing something six months early does the same work as talent.

Go on the Day Everyone Else Turns Back

The time-lag story has a sequel.

By then Avex existed, barely. We’d founded the company in 1988, and our own label, avex trax, was only a few months old. In January 1991 I set out for a music trade fair in France. I left Japan the day after the Gulf War began.

Everyone said it would end fast with an American victory. Then it started, and nobody could say when it would end.

I was on a layover in Paris when word reached me from the man running our company at the time, who was supposed to join me from New York. He was holding off on leaving. I got him on the phone, startled, and in the end he came out from New York anyway.

The travel bans went out across the Japanese companies the next day or thereabouts, as I remember it. One day the other way and I wouldn’t have gone either.

Japanese record companies were all but absent from the fair. I certainly never ran into one. Almost none of the American music people were there either. I’d flown in ahead of the opening and spent that time sitting down with the European labels.

The whole place was buzzing about one word: techno. It sounded interesting, so I listened to everything I could get my ears on, bought the rights to every promising track in bulk, and flew home.

By the time the other record companies noticed techno, we already held most of the licenses worth holding. That May, Juliana’s Tokyo opened, the giant disco that came to define early-nineties Japan, and the tracks I’d bought filled its floor. Techno blew up.

What face was that opportunity wearing?

It wore the face of “there’s a war on, cancel the trip.”

Make the same call as everyone else and you run no risk. In exchange, you get what everyone else gets.

The place the whole crowd abandoned is also the place with zero rivals.

To be clear, I’m not telling you to copy this. Pull the same move today and it’s just called reckless. I was young, the company was small, and I had almost nothing to lose. The era permitted it, and so did my position.

What I want to hand you isn’t the act. It’s the structure. When everyone retreats in the same direction, the other side empties out.

And that structure doesn’t need anything as extreme as a war. Recessions, industry headwinds: every era produces the same emptying-out, and it always works the same way.

The Door Only Opens for a Moment

Opportunity has one more cruel property.

The door stays open for almost no time at all.

My first meeting with Tetsuya Komuro was exactly that. If the name is new to you: Komuro was the leader of TM NETWORK, one of Japan’s biggest bands, and would go on to become the producer who defined Japanese pop in the 1990s.

Our label was barely two years old at that point, and I wanted one thing more than anything else: to make Eurobeat covers of TM NETWORK’s songs. Our people spent half a year working the deal, and at the final stage I was to meet Komuro himself.

At that meeting, he said:

“A new, cool record company like Avex, covering TM songs of all things? Won’t that just make you look uncool?”

You could hear it as a polite no. What I heard was a man who didn’t trust us yet. And I thought: if I was ever going to throw myself in with this man, it was right now.

So I answered on the spot.

“We’ll make it cool. I guarantee it.”

I had no evidence. All I had was the self-assurance of a guy who’d listened to thousands of Eurobeat tracks.

That cover album came out in 1992 and climbed to No. 4 on the Oricon chart, Japan’s Billboard 200. A tiny record company nobody could place had put up a number, and doors started opening. The rest of the story, in Japan at least, is history.

If I’d said “let me take this back to the office and think it over,” none of it happens.

When the door opens, the only people who make it through are the ones who finished preparing before it opened.

And the line you say as you jump is always the same: “We can do it.” You square the books afterward, even if it kills you.

I Was Supposed to Become a Banker

Last one. The chance that wore the strangest face of all.

Back in my shop days, my path was set: banking. I was going to join the Bank of Yokohama.

The man who stopped me was the shop’s owner. Here’s the funny part. His own father was a director of that very bank. A man from the family that knew banking best kept telling me, almost daily, on those drives home:

“Forget the bank. You might do fine as a salaryman. But running your own business is a lot more interesting.”

Then one day at home, my old man said, out of nowhere: “Know of any interesting businesses?”

I do, I said. Record rental.

I knew it made money. I knew better than anyone, because I’d handled the numbers with my own hands. Keep stock purchases to about twenty percent of sales and a record-rental shop runs. It’s an eighty percent gross margin business.

The owner and my father put in 10 million yen each, about $50,000 apiece in those days, and formed a company. I became its president. Twenty-one years old, a college-student CEO. On the far end of that same line sits Avex. How a record-rental company became Avex is a story for another one of these essays.

Remember where all of this started. A rejection for a lousy part-time job.

If I’d decided “never again” on that rainy night, Avex would not exist.

Opportunity doesn’t only arrive as an event. Sometimes it arrives as a meddlesome person who tells you the same thing every single day.

There’s an old saying that the goddess of fortune has only a forelock: seize her as she approaches, because the back of her head is bald.

If you ask me, it’s worse than that.

The goddess of fortune arrives in disguise.

When she came to me, she wore the face of a rejected job application, the face of a million yen in monthly losses, the face of a flight out the day after a war began, the face of a polite no.

So stop scanning the ground for something shiny.

Take the plain thing in front of you, the unlucky thing, and find it more interesting than anyone else does. Do that, and years later you get the answer key: so that was the chance.
