We are back! So back baby. I hope you’re having a great July so far! My best friend of 20 years got married recently; it was SO beautiful and honestly the perfect socialization re-entry. Although I am just now 6 weeks postpartum, I am proud of myself for getting dressed and enjoying such a special weekend with family and lifelong friends. This is the kind of joy that’s good for the soul, especially right after having a baby!! I am starting off on a very honest foot (per usual)…

Some version of this conversation happens with almost every private client I work with, and it’s usually said quietly, almost like a confession. She’ll look at her closet, or herself in the mirror, and say some variation of:

“I just don’t know my style anymore. Nothing fits me. I have no idea how to get dressed. I don’t know where to even start.”

Or, and this one gets me every time, “I feel like I don’t recognize myself.”

I know how this feels and I have felt this way now three times!

This feeling is real, it’s valid, and it has almost nothing to do with fashion. But here’s what I also know; after years of doing this work with women at every stage of life, the way you get dressed in the morning has more power over how you move through your day than most people give it credit. And you don’t have to have it all figured out to start feeling better. You just need a few things to work right now that, day by day, will adjust with you and give you a newfound confidence that will come with these changing life stages!

Moral of the story today: let’s dress not for the body you had before. Not for the body you’ll have in six months. But for the body and the life you have right now.

We’ve allllllll been there. Scrolling Instagram, TikTok, or any other style/fashion website…suddenly everything feels urgent. The butter-yellow blazer that three influencers posted. Mesh ballet flats that just dropped. The “quiet luxury” rebrand of basics you already own but suddenly now feel compelled to repurchase. You add them to cart, check out. The package arrives. You feel that oh so good, but brief dopamine hit. And you find yourself here…here again…

So now what? That piece from your impulse buy joins your ever growing section in your closet that represents a small version of you that existed for approximately 48 hours on a random Tuesday afternoon. This, right here, is the problem folks…so buckle up and grab a glass of wine, I am breaking it all down and explaining the hard truths. I am also giving you a style guide; your realistic framework to finally help you build a wardrobe you love.

Today, what we’re discussing sounds simple, but it’s actually one of the hardest things to navigate in today’s fashion climate: building a wardrobe that’s interesting, personal, and loved, rather than one that’s merely current and thus, disjointed.

The Trend Trap: Why We Keep Falling In

Today’s fashion cycle is no longer designed for thoughtful consumption; it’s geared towards velocity. (Hence, all the convos about brands now trying to be sustainable and “conscious” again, trying to make a statement to set themselves apart and make you buy into an old-school method that just doesn’t exist anymore.)

What used to be four seasons a year has splintered into 52 micro-seasons, each with its own aesthetic vocabulary.

One month it’s “mob wife.” The next it’s “coastal grandmother.” Then “tomato girl summer” gives way to “old money aesthetic” gives way to “eclectic grandpa.” The aesthetics have their own aesthetics now…SHEESH!! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the creativity, but sometimes too much is, well, too much!

The trend cycle is simply not about clothes, it’s about a content cycle with narratives. The fashion industry has become extraordinarily good at making you feel like you need to buy your way into each new story. (This has always been the heart of the industry; the feelings, the reaction, the reflection, and it is exactly why I love it!) BUT, don’t get it twisted; today’s world has unfortunately blurred these lines and made it harder for you to achieve ideal style identity, purposefully confusing you so that you buy yourself into a fashionable abyss of clothing you never wear… (alas, why I do what I do ;))

So what does this blurred modern cycle actually cost you?

-MONEY: Obviously. Duh. And studies suggest we actually only wear only about 20–30% of what we own. How this for a stat?!

-MENTAL ENERGY: Decision fatigue is real. A closet full of disconnected pieces makes getting dressed harder, not easier. This is the number one frustration I hear from private clients. ALL. DAY. LONG.

-YOUR TRUE PERSONAL STYLE: This is the big one. When every purchase is reactive (a response to something you see) you never fully develop a clear sense of what’s in here (your heart and mind). What actually makes YOU feel like yourself.

I have spoken before about my style strategy approach when it comes to reactive versus intuitive. Your style strategy must NEVER be reactive but always a reaction to what is truly inside of you…your intuition.
