Below: the biggest headlines in creator economy, branded entertainment, and traditional-media convergence from Jun 25, 2026 - Jul 26, 2026.

First order of business: Apologies for said “hiatus.” As I mentioned in June, I did some travel that kept me away from my computer. Leading up to that, I encountered a (self-inflicted) mini passport crisis that kept me busy in the days before leaving for Europe.

And on the heels of that, I had a terrible bout of some gastrointestinal illness that I needed antibiotics to defeat. I’m not sure if it was cryptospora, but no matter what it was, it wasn’t fun.

As a result, this catch-up is XXL, covering a large number of stories from the previous 4-5 weeks, including:

Warner Bros. acquires film rights to internet horror icon “Siren Head” following bidding war

Bose launches Bose Studios, partnering with Sugar23 and Steven Soderbergh on documentary series and other branded entertainment

BuzzFeed Studios and muVpix partner to produce over 100 vertical microdrama titles over two years for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts

MLB Players Inc. launches MLB Players Studio with Portal A to produce original programming around individual players

Comedy Central’s The Daily Show announces its first-ever micro drama series, satirizing viral short-form soap phenomena

A major creator economy company hires a co-founder from a creator commerce platform to build a marketplace targeting the projected $43.9B U.S. creator advertising market

A Hollywood producer launches a vertical microdrama platform backed by a venture fund with $100K-$250K budgets per series

A retail media collective and consumer goods company launch a 22-episode scripted micro-drama series for in-store screens and e-commerce platforms

Thank you to paid subscribers for making this possible.

Studios Enter the Creator Economy

Fox Creator Studios Launch — Fox Entertainment’s Rob Wade and Billy Parks appeared on a Cannes Lion edition of Variety’s Strictly Business podcast and discussed their experience building Fox Creator Studios (led by Parks) (Variety). Parks said: “I saw the possibility of having revenue in a [production] business rather than just spend, and from there we started to think about other ways we could get revenue: Brands, products, services, IRL events, all of these things.”

Bose Studios Launch — Bose launches Bose Studios, a branded entertainment platform spanning music, film, TV, digital and live events, partnering with Sugar23 and Steven Soderbergh on documentary series and other content. (Deadline) The company stated: “As companies increasingly shift from competing for attention to creating the assets that generate it, Bose Studios represents a bold investment in culture, creativity, and storytelling.”

MLB Players Studio — MLB Players Inc. launched MLB Players Studio with Portal A to produce original programming around individual players, betting athletes can reach fans more effectively than teams or leagues. (netinfluencer.com) A spokesperson said: “Athletes are owning their audience more than ever before. It’s really all about the athletes directly, so by being part of that, brands can go directly to the fans through the athletes.”

The Signal: I don’t know a ton about sports, but it seems like MLB’s approach here might be slightly different (and more effective?) than the NFL’s. The “individual player” thing is the part that interests me. There are a ton of big personalities in professional sports and the logical extension of that from a branding / entertainment perspective seems to be: If fans can connect with these individual players on a direct, emotional level, they’ll feel more connected to the players – and by extension, the league.

Basically: MLB has figured out the power of para-social relationships and is leveraging that to elevate their brand. Smart. Maybe NFL is doing this too in some way, but (based on my limited knowledge of the space) it seems less focused on individual players and more focused on teams / the league.

Internet-Native IP Migrates to Hollywood

Networks are pitching creator content as a distinct ad product with its own metrics, audience guarantees, and pricing structures. It’s being treated like a programming block.” (techbuzz.ai)

The Signal: I’m not afraid to call this one – By the end of the year, creators are going to be getting overall deals. His comedy is very funny and very weird, and it happens to align with my own comedic tastes. I’m currently pursuing a partnership with him to produce a scripted show (or a couple). We’ve met, discussed projects, and seem to have some alignment on the type of show we would make.

I don’t know if it’s going to work out – Colin is incredibly busy and he may hate all the stuff I’m pitching him – but I think it’s a partnership worth pursuing. His existing audience is only a small reason I went out to him.
