About Paul Levy

Paul Levy is one of the most original thinkers working at the intersection of quantum physics, consciousness, and spiritual awakening. He is the author of seven books, including The Quantum Revelation, Undreaming Wetiko, Wetiko, and Dispelling Wetiko. The first three are the most recent, published by Inner Traditions, one of the leading independent publishers in mind, body, and spirit literature.

It’s interesting that Paul dedicated his time writing three books about Wetiko. Even his book, The Quantum Revelation, incorporates Wetiko. This begs the question: What is Wetiko? Below is a description of Wetiko, compiled from the back covers of Paul Levy’s books, Dispelling Wetiko and Wetiko:

Paul Levy conveys, in a thorough and eloquent manner, that we don’t have to be under the spell of Wetiko. By recognizing Wetiko for what it is, we can break from this self-inflicting curse that would otherwise destroy us. If realized, we can be the masters of a fabulous life and everything around us and not be a pawn of the manipulation, control, and brainwashing that Wetiko thrives on. It’s our obliviousness and carelessness that gives Wetiko power. Once love and compassion take hold within us, comprising our true nature and creative power, Wetiko’s influence vanquishes.

Paul’s path to this work was not academic. In his early twenties, following a profound personal trauma, he entered a sustained period of inner exploration. This led to a spiritual awakening so intense that Paul was hospitalized multiple times and diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but he never accepted that framing. Over the following decade, he integrated what he had experienced by reading deeply in quantum physics and discovered that the universe those scientists were describing matched, point for point, the universe he had fallen into. Dan Kaplan is a visionary artist, writer, and transformation guide with over fifty years of experience exploring human potential. Story One: The Man Who Got Hit by Lightning from the Inside

Paul Levy was a normal happy kid. College done, graduate school on the horizon, a predictable path confronted him. Then, in his early twenties, something happened. A trauma so significant that it stopped his life entirely.

He doesn’t dwell on the details. What matters is what he did next.

He went inside. Four hours a day, on average, just watching his own mind. Not formal meditation. Just watching. For two years, he kept at it until one day something broke open. Not from the sky. From inside his brain.

Paul entered an altered state and recognized the reality we think exists outside ourselves is a collectively shared dream that we are all dreaming up into existence, moment by moment.
He was so overwhelmed by this realization that within the first day, he was hospitalized. Diagnosed with bipolar. Told he would need medication for the rest of his life and that what he was experiencing was a psychotic break.

Paul never bought it for a second.

Over the next few years, he was hospitalized several more times. The last was in 1982. His entire world, family, friends, and everyone believed he was mentally ill and in denial. Meanwhile, Paul was reading books on quantum physics. Far-out ones. And something was clicking.

It took him a dozen years to integrate what had happened. But once he connected the dots, he went deeply into quantum physics over the next four decades, and eventually, he knew he had to write the book Dan held up at the start of this conversation: The Quantum Revelation.

Story Two: The Dream We Are All Having

Before quantum physics emerged about a hundred years ago, scientists believed the world existed independently of the observer. Something out there that we were simply watching, trying to understand. Then quantum physics turned that idea over completely.

There is no objective world, it turns out. The act of observing influences what is being observed. The universe responds to attention. Paul calls this the essential rabbit hole, and once you go down it, the implications are staggering.

There are infinite possibilities every moment. The universe is not deterministic. It is probabilistic. We are participants in how it manifests, not spectators. Most of us have simply forgotten that:

Quantum physics is freely and openly showing us our incredible creative power to create our experience. And it is just what is needed. It is the medicine our species needs right now.

Paul calls it a spiritual treasure, drawing on the Tibetan tradition of hidden teachings planted in the fabric of the universe, like alarm clocks set to go off when a community needs to wake up. Quantum physics, he believes, is exactly that kind of discovery. And we are only at the very beginning of taking it in.

He points to the elementary particle as the clearest example. An elementary particle exists in every possible state simultaneously, until it is observed. At that moment, it actualizes into one manifestation, and all other possibilities dissolve. That process happens at every moment, in every corner of the universe, including inside each of us.

Story Three: Where God Fits In

Paul does not sidestep the question of God. He says quantum physics points directly at it, even when it does not use the word.

The physics term is the nonlocal field. Nonlocal means not bound by three-dimensional space and time. And what quantum physics has proven is that this universe is one seamlessly interconnected quantum field. There are no separate things. There is no separation anywhere. We are part of it.

That, Paul says, is a mystical experience of God. And it has everything to do with our creative nature:

We can get in phase with each other, get in sync with each other, in a way where we can transform this waking Dream. We can consciously step into our own evolutionary process.

He uses the image of a night dream to bring it home. When you dream at night, the world in the dream seems separate from you. Solid, real, objective. When you wake up, you realize that every person, every object, every conversation in that dream was nothing but a reflection of your own mind. Paul’s point is that the waking world works the same way. We have just forgotten that we are dreaming it.

And the more of us who remember, the more the dream itself can change.

Story Four: The Vision on the College Campus

Dan had been listening closely. Then he started talking about 1973.

He was twenty years old, a junior in college. He had spent years in high school reading Carl Jung, which made Paul’s constant references to Jung feel like pieces of a puzzle finally locking together. But those years of reading had grown out of something much harder.

Dan grew up in a home where his parents were physically and verbally abusive. He was so angry as a small child that his aunt’s husband, watching him throw things around at age two, said he was going to be a criminal. Dan looked at his father and decided, I will never become that. And so, he did what children who need to survive do. He turned inward and figured out how to remain sane.

Jung was part of that survival. So was art.

And then, on his college campus, out of nowhere, a vision came.

He could not have planned it. It came from somewhere else entirely, a convergence of every conversation he had ever had, every book he had read, every year of working to hold himself together. It brought him into a completely different realm of understanding.

The following year, in 1974, he turned that vision into an art piece. He titled it Emergence and Transformations. While he worked on it, something ancient moved through him, a feeling he had never had before. A sense of something coming from thousands of years back, from a source so deep he had no word for it.

When he read Paul’s books decades later, light bulbs went off. Everything he had experienced, the vision, the art, the survival, the creative agency that had kept him going, was mapped right there on those pages.

Story Five: The Wounded Healer

Paul has a name for what Dan went through. What he himself went through. What so many people, in one form or another, have gone through.

He calls it the archetype of the wounded healer, the shaman in training.

In indigenous cultures, when someone starts acting a little differently, the community understands: This person may be called by the spirits to become a healer, a teacher, a guide. In the West, we diagnose them, medicate them, and call it a pathology. Paul says if he had signed on to his diagnosis, it would have killed him.

The shaman’s journey involves a descent. Into darkness, into suffering so intense you would never choose it. But the shaman goes there anyway, because they are called by something that will not leave them alone. And if they find their way back, they come with gifts:

My writing is, in a way, my offering. The gifts that have come because of my descent into the darkness.

Paul is on his seventh book now. He just turned it in last week.

And there is something else he says about the wounded healer worth sitting with. The wound itself becomes a portal. Not something to cure. Not something to overcome. A portal to the gifts, to the work, to the ability to reach others who are carrying their own wounds and wondering what they mean.

Paul still feels the wound from almost fifty years ago in every moment. He has simply stopped trying to make it go away and started letting it point him toward his work instead.

Story Six: The Rainmaker

Near the end of our conversation, Paul told one of Carl Jung’s favorite stories. It comes from a mythic land in the middle of a terrible drought. The crops are dying. The people are desperate. They invite a rainmaker.

The rainmaker arrives, asks for a small hut at the edge of the village, and disappears inside. “Do not bother me until I come out”, he says.

A few days later, it rains. Massively. The people rush to him, asking what he did, what magic he performed.

He says: “When I arrived, I felt that this land was deeply out of balance. So, I went inside and sat by myself until I got back into balance. And when I got back into balance, it rained”.

That story holds the whole of what Paul has been trying to say. Any one of us getting ourselves back into balance is our offering to the nonlocal field. It moves out into the collective unconscious instantaneously, making something available for everyone.

You do not have to fix the world. You must find your center. And from there, according to quantum physics, everything is possible.

Story Seven: The Year I Won a Billion Dollars

I told Paul about my horses.

A few years ago, my aunt, uncle, and husband wanted to go to the races in Tampa. Not my usual scene, but I went. I found myself looking at the horses’ names and picking winners, five times in a row, purely on feeling. Years later, at a racetrack in Illinois, watching my husband’s son perform with his band, I got bored and tried again. Won again.

So I started asking: “Was I creating those outcomes? Or predicting them?” My son Graham, who is deeply mystical, heard the question and asked, “Mom, what does it matter?”

He is right. And from that question, a book was born.

I titled it, The Year I Won a Billion Dollars, because I wanted to immerse myself in the feeling. I wrote it in the first person. I turned the lottery numbers into horse names, because horses I can feel. And I wrote about myself winning. I wrote two versions: one where I gave everything away and one where I kept 10% for family and friends. I wanted to live inside the vibration of radical generosity and see what it unlocked.

Paul said he loved the idea. Then he connected it back to everything he had been saying all afternoon:

By stepping into that timeline and really feeling what it feels like, you are attracting that potential universe toward manifestation. That is exactly what quantum physics is pointing at.

Which means writing the book was not fiction. It was physics.

The Crystal in the Water

Paul closed with an image from Carl Jung. You have a glass of water. You add grains of sugar one by one, and nothing seems to change. Then you add one more grain, and a crystal forms. Suddenly, instantaneously, everything reorganizes around a new structure.

He said any one of us, at any given moment, could be that grain. A single person who realizes the dreamlike nature of reality, their creative power, and the connection between the inner and outer worlds could be the one who tips the collective unconscious toward something new.

That is not hope. It is quantum probability.

And so this is why we do this podcast. This is why Dan spent decades bringing Paul Levy’s ideas into his own life and his own work. This is why I have spent 26 years helping over 175 thought leaders write their books and step into their own visibility. This is why Paul has written seven books, even though his entire world once told him he was broken.

We are all, as Paul says, wounded healers in training. We are all dreamers learning that we can change the dream.

We just have to remember we are dreaming.

Over fifty years ago, a college student named Dan Kaplan walked through a doorway at Lake Forest College and encountered something that would alter the course of his entire life, not just change it, but define it. This wasn’t a gradual awakening or a comfortable epiphany. It was a vision so profound that it literally brought him to his knees, leaving him weak, with a pounding headache, and forever altered.

Most people would have buried that experience or filed it away under “things we don’t talk about.” But instead, Dan did something radical. He held it, quietly, privately, but firmly; he held onto his inner truth.

The Art of Holding What Others Can’t See

“The word holding is very key to this,” Dan explains. “When you have an experience that’s out of the ordinary, or rather bizarre, you tend not to share it with anybody but keep it to yourself. But I will implore everyone who has an experience like mine, because everyone’s different when it’s off track from what you think the world is; hold on. That’s your inner truth.”

In 1974, Dan immortalized that vision in a sculpture titled “Emergence and Transformations.” The words themselves, emergence and transformation, have since become common language among spiritual and humanitarian leaders worldwide. But back then, in his twenties, he was just an angry young artist trying to figure out how to bridge the impossible gap between inner knowing and outer expression.

The Prison We Build Ourselves

The journey wasn’t pleasant.

“We devise our own self-made prison,” Dan reflects. “Got to do this, got to do that. We go through all the systems we’ve devised to make some sense of our world, to provide meaning or purpose when in fact these are so limiting to who we truly are deep inside.”

The irony? Dan was someone people naturally confided in. Even as a teenager, friends sought his counsel. His own parents came to him, crying about childhood abuse, his mother even offering money for therapy. At fifteen, he had the wisdom to say: “Mom, I’m part of the family dynamic. You’ll have to seek outside help.”

But turning that compassion inward? That was the hardest work of all.

From Terrified Introvert to Stage-Ready Performer

As Dan states, “I was terrified to raise my hand in class when I was a child, terrified of going in front of people and giving a speech. Terrified of performing. And now I’m embracing it. I cannot wait to go on stage for a musical presentation in front of thousands of people.”

I asked, How does someone make that transformation?

Dan responded, “I’ve gone through a process, and it hasn’t been easy. But I had to do it, or else I’d be in that same place, withdrawn, quiet. That is not a good place to be. That’s a state of fear, a state of inhibition. That’s a self-made prison.”

Dan was diagnosed with severe bipolar disorder and put on medications. But he worked it out through his art, through his own creative agency. Not by dismissing professional help entirely, but by refusing to let any external authority have the final word on his inner reality.

The Breakthrough Comes When You Think You Can’t Continue

As Dan states, “The moment you feel the difficulty of your journey, it comes to a point where you say something like, ‘My God, I can’t handle this, I can’t do this, it just seems impossible. That’s when a breakthrough is around the corner.”

This isn’t empty optimism. It’s hard-won wisdom from someone who has felt his head bang against walls, both literal and metaphorical, trying to work things out.

Dan points out,” Following through is extremely important and key to your own inner evolution and growth. This will not only help you, but will help others as you share yourself because you will. Once you’re committed to your inner truth and finding ways to bridge this, you'll discover ways of expressing the inner knowing and wisdom that lies deep within.”

Creative Agency in an Age of Artificial Intelligence

In a world increasingly anxious about AI and technological change, Dan’s advice is surprisingly grounded: “Focus on your creative agency.”

“As long as you hasten your creative agency, that’s what really matters. That’s where energy should be put, not into fear about artificial intelligence. We will always remain the masters of that, as long as we focus on our creative agency.

The real danger isn’t the technology. It’s the downward spiral of negative thinking that makes us vulnerable to manipulation and control.”

Dan continues:

“My journey hasn’t been solitary. My friend, Paul Levy, author of The Quantum Revelation, a book noted by top quantum physicists as the best-written on quantum physics, remarkably penned it, despite not being a quantum physicist himself.

That’s saying that we all have this inner knowing. Because Paul went deep within himself, the answers are already there inside us. Or maybe not the answers, but answers lead to more questions. It’s a never-ending process. It's wonderful.”

The Message for Right Now

So, what should people do to decrease stress and find their way forward, especially introverts who struggle to reach out?

Dan shares, “Love yourself. Stand your ground. Assert yourself at all times. Be the boss. Be the commander of your life.”

And about loneliness, that modern epidemic? Here’s a perspective that might surprise you as Dan shares:

“Are you really ever alone? Loneliness is telling me you're not in touch with yourself. The lonely feelings you have exist within, not with others. You’re rejecting this inner feeling of obliviousness, the unknown.

The solution isn't connecting with others. It’s connecting with yourself first.”

Embracing Imperfection and Mystery

Dan adds from his artistic side, “Our very nature provides such wonder, excitement, and curiosity. And after five decades of holding a vision that seemed impossible to share, of working through diagnosis and medication, fear and inhibition, anger and isolation, I've arrived at something profound: the beauty of life is to embrace the mystery.

Let's not just create beautiful things that exist in movies, in feel-good films. Let's make money serve us in a real way. Let our actions speak for themselves in creating a glorious reality for not only us but our entire planet.”

A Vision Coming Full Circle
