I’ll go ahead and dive right into being that annoying person that lets you know that I’m having a hard time with reentry to real life after what was a near perfect vacation. As such, I had to create a succinct framework for my latest installment of this newsletter. The Drop By Dispatch is a simple round up of here and there items that have stuck with me and served me well recently and/or very new things that I have just discovered and have a growing obsession with. I’ll aim to do one of these once a week in addition to something meatier.

A Near Perfect LBD

First up, the little black dress I wore every other day on that said vacay. It’s the Breeze in Night from Duster and when I tell you this is the modern house dress from heaven, it’s not hyperbole. It’s machine washable, doesn’t wrinkle, is mostly pure cotton and is beyond versatile. I have it in Crimson as well, but mostly wore the black version with the studded Paxton sandal from Freda Salvador (similar here, actually really love these and a great price point.) or red suede flip flops from Zara (similar here, also love how vibrant these are.) Threw on some Bottega Veneta shield sunglasses because the simplicity of the dress really does allow one to tinker with some over- the-top eyewear that’s sleek but slightly cartoonish. There’s a long version of this Duster called the Easy Access that comes in black, white and a camel color. I have them all and wear with sandals in the summer and love it with boots in the fall especially because of the tasteful side slits that showcases the boot plus a perfect amount of leg when you walk.

Chic Jeans for Short Queens

L’Agence just launched Les Petites, their line of (you guessed it) jeans for people clocking in around or under 5’5” aka ME. I tried on several pairs at their LA offices yesterday, particularly the wide leg styles since those are the most challenging to find if you don’t have legs up to your ears. I walked away with the Scottie Petite coated jeans which I am wearing above with red flip flops and white crochet top, but will happily pair with boots and a blazer once the temperature isn’t alarming. It’s amazing how hard it is to find pants that I don’t have to hem and am always thankful when a brand (especially one like L’Agence that really makes great pants) considers a shorter frame and actually nails all of the proportions.

Vanilla for Grown Ups

It’s safe to assume that we’re all still traumatized by our years living through the atmospheric event that was Bath and Body Works Warm Vanilla. I am personally triggered every time a 14-year-old working out next to me at Burn is doused in whatever the 2026 version of it is. But, I will say it with my full chest right here: I don’t think it’s possible to escape being vanilla-curious in this day and age regardless of the fact that your kid’s friends all wear it and you think it’s juvenile. Vanilla is comforting and we all need like tuck-yourself-into-a-lasagna levels of comfort right now.

I walked into Byredo last weekend and sniffed around as I usually do trying hard to make myself love anything at Byredo, but the truth is there is nothing I ever see myself looking forward to wearing day in and day out. Until now.

The sales person gave me a sneak spritz at a scent that is actually just out today, called Future Memories. At first I felt it was WAY too spicy. As it dried down, it was a POW of deep, dark, buttery and spiky vanilla. I wasn’t “wowed” about it for a few hours, but the scent evolved into something musky, warm but also like a second skin with serration. It’s a warm hug from a friend followed by a tiny jab to your shoulder. Throwing the notes of Future Memories below because I think it’s helpful and much more organized than my unhinged descriptions of it. I might just make it my Q4 scent!

Her main advice was to “put down the tweezers.” It was a revolutionary approach to eyebrow maintenance considering the other options at the time were threading or a cartoonish block stencil brow. If you’ve followed and been a fan of beauty and or brows over the past decade and a half, you’re aware, Streicher’s philosophy has served her (and her many clients) very well. Once we think we reach peak brow craze, Streicher’s easy going fluffy aesthetic cuts through the noise and reminds us that brows are meant to accentuate the face not stand alone as their own fleeting trend.

Then in 2020 (moments before the Covid lockdown) I published a 7 page “eyebrow package” in the LA Times (because, what could be more helpful amidst a global pandemic?) and tapped Streicher for her knowledge. At the time, lamination was rampant, “fox” brows were trending and good old Elmers glue sticks were a ubiquitous beauty tool for a DIY approach to lamination. Streicher however, remained consistent to her feathered and nurtured brow aesthetic.

6 years on and her philosophy on brows has never wavered. She is a practitioner of less is more and the products she has developed under her brand KS&CO follow this ethos. And while I am certainly a fan of her existing products - a pen and lightly tinted setting gel - a texture pencil released just last week, is a bonafide beauty game changer.

After 6 years of development, Streicher has launched her Backcombing Texture Stick. This chubby pencil comes in two shades (which Streicher says work on all hair color) and contains a waxy texture and fibers that when backcombed through the brows adds an effortless tint, fluff and volume that I personally never thought my stick straight and sparse brows could achieve.

During a recent visit to Streicher’s Beverly Hills salon, Striiike, she described the the texture stick to be like a dry shampoo for the hair. There is a grit and heft that pumps up the brow rather than adding artificial looking “strokes.” Forget the stenciled “perfection” of laminated brows that stand at startling attention, or the anxiety of waxy product being visible on the skin when the sunlight hits your face. When backcombed through the brow, Streicher’s stick gently adds fibers and a very subtle tint into the hair for an incredibly believable illusion of truly fluffier eyebrows.

By now, Streicher’s clients adopt her full brow philosophy and are always ready to use a product she creates or recommends. This newest one does not disappoint and deserves a spot in your makeup bag.

Continuing the list of life privileges, I should also mention we are headed to Italy next week, so comfortable sandals that also allow me to pack light and keep from adding to the inevitable chorus of complaints coming from our camp is paramount. And since we are going from city to country to seaside, I took a few pairs for a test drive before reserving them a spot in my suitcase.

Here are a few that are not just comfortable, they’re versatile and likely the only ones I’m taking with.

Many of you know that Freda Salvador shoes are comfortable. And while I love an easy, barely there sandal, the ones with some heft and structure are the only that provide the support my arch-less feet require. And going with the very “toe-forward” trend, these are that but also have other interesting things going on. Freda Salvador was having a super sale and the black with silver stud Paxton’s were a steal at $118. They’re sold out on the Freda site now except if you wear a petite size 5 (CUUUTE). BUT, you’re in luck because they are still on sale for $114 HERE with sizes 6.5 and 8.5 still in stock. HERE is a gently worn pair in great condition in a size 6.5 for just $76. Amanu Samburu Leather Sandal

I’ve been wearing Amanu since founder Anita Patrickson launched her gorgeous line in 2018. I’ve had the same 3 styles of sandals re-soled by her incredible artisans for a few summers now. Each is timeless, ultra comfortable and the handmade, custom sole aspect of it all really appeals to me. I got the Samburus last summer and have worn them so much. This style launched 100 dupes, but I believe the OG Amanu version are most comfortable because of the high quality materials and handmade care that goes into each pair.

Dusted off these adorable bone-colored jeans from L’Agence that I will be packing for my trip, paired with my new favorite little blouse from Zara that also comes in a cute lavender color. Both are on super sale at just $25. A closer look at the brown blouse + Isabel Marant sunglasses I purchased from the Cabazon outlet a couple of years ago. I love this updated version.

Zara Flat Leather Sandals

Now, for some reason I can’t locate the red version online. Perhaps because Zara is a week or so into its super sale, these have since sold out. I know there was a blue version as well. I think any pair of red flip flops are great while the trend is still hot (get it?) and when it comes to flip flops (unless it’s a Fit Flop, remember those?!) they’re all pretty much the same semi-comfort level. I do however like this nude-colored, suede style. Same silhouette in a chic neutral shade. For straight up red, albeit a different shade, I love the Zinfandel hue from Birkenstock. Any style is great but particularly the Big Buckle Eva. Obv, comfort is a given here.

Red + brown is still a thing, so wore these with my trusty Chimala jeans and a very on sale knit polo top from H&M. Sunnies are the Alba from Sunnies, the best Filipino eyewear and makeup brand. At just $40, you should grab them in every color. They are mostly sold out of this style, but the ivory frames with light green tinted lenses are still in stock and SO good.

Raffia, of course, makes its solar return this season and I am always here for that, but lately it’s the, “did you dust off your sewing machine and stitch that yourself from an old pillow cover? Or is it The Row?” Type of little and simple bag that has grabbed my attention. Or perhaps it’s a toiletry bag that you’re tucking under your armpit and convincing me it’s Khaite? I am so into all of this, because I need a rest from eyeing $4000 bags and acting like I am going to buy them and would enjoy carrying them while sweating my way through the next 3 months.

Aside from the financial heft is a physical one that has no place in 90+ degree weather. Plus, the diminutive nature of said summer bags off-set the relatively rigid look of everything I wear. Like saying, “I’m not a free spirit, even during the summer, but this bag may just indicate otherwise.” Always keep em guessing.

Small bag means less stuff and less implied responsibility. Sorry, I can’t carry the family hand sanitizer, extra phone charger, can of sunscreen and Claritin. It’s just my wallet, phone and one ONE mini lip gloss (I am addicted to this cutie tube). I obviously don’t need to lay out the benefits of a smaller bag to you, but it’s not just the smaller size, it’s the lighter weight and wispy whimsy (wait, is that a trad wife’s baby’s name?) that I am obsessed with this exact second.

I’ve purchased a couple and may grab one or two more to have a proper rotation of wispy and her sister whimsy. Here’s how I’ve worn this mustard-colored little guy from Valesque lately and several more I think are all fantastic options for keeping it light and easy all season long.

Do less, carry less, is my mantra for as long as I can mentally manage.

Last week, I co-hosted the 4th annual Filipino Forces Feast and Fiesta in Los Angeles. It’s a celebration of Filipino excellence across entertainment, media, food, tech, philanthropy and finance. Food (conceptualized and created by Sampa LA) is unsurprisingly at the center of the event and fashion comes in a close second. Each year, I genuinely love seeing how people customize, style and shake up the codes of traditional Filipino garments, namely "Terno” or “Filipiniana” characterized by a structured butterfly sleeve on a blouse, bolero or dress. Or a barong which is the Filipino answer to a tuxedo. Made from piña or abaca fibers, a barong is a semi-sheer, sometimes embroidered button down that is traditionally worn over a simple, fitted white undershirt or tank top (I wrote about my personal connection to the barong for CNN here should you wish to expand your knowledge on the historical significance of the shirt.)

This leads to life changing dresses. For the past two years, I have worn dresses made by the Filipino designer, Puey Quinones. Quinones is what I understand to be a household name in the Philippines where he sells in several major department stores and also to a robust list of VIP private clients and celebrities. In the US, he is well-known for bridal and couture, designing both from his Los Angeles Atelier where I go to meet him and see what he’s envisioning me to wear.

Twice, he has absolutely NAILED the perfect dress for me. Last year, it was what I call “a barong, exploded” and this year, it was a custom electric pleated asymmetrical skirt combined with a cotton Lycra bodice and silk brocade Terno sleeves smattered with tonal sequins. Quinones wrapped boning in bias tape and made a sculptural belt which was finished with a brocade flower.

When I enter his atelier, I make a beeline to one dress and it without a doubt turns out to be the very one he has either chosen or made especially for me. “It’s very important to understand the personality of the person you are designing for.” Quinones tells me. “It’s like creating artwork, understanding your subject and then executing on the magic.” That rush from putting on a dress you love is unbeatable (bridal shopping or equally for me, my bathrobe by 7 pm), but the cultural exploration Quinones’ creations have put me on is a place I never quite expected.

Because each dress, plus some other pieces I have from him, are inspired by traditional Filipino garments, my curiosity around the reason for each detail and flourish or choice of fabric or embroidery is piqued. Quinones himself is generous with his knowledge as a designer and also first-hand experience working with traditional weavers in the countryside of the Philippine islands. He has a fantastical vision grounded in the colorful community and history of his homeland.

These dresses have been solid conversation starters with people in real life/at the events, but also through my DMs and with friends via text who are wowed by the pieces and educated about the sartorial strengths of the Philippines through our chats. That’s where the “life changing” part comes in. I naturally get to weave cultural points of pride into something I am immensely proud to wear mainly because it’s beautiful and super bonus that it’s indicative of my family and where they’ve come from.

When the weather starts to swelter more than not and your desire for throwing on something airy and easy eclipses the need to shimmy a pair of vintage Levi’s up and over, then figure out, well, everything else.

Getting dressed can be a lot (for me) and when I am sweaty - swift unsubscribe.

Whether you’re a “dress person” or not, I assure you, you ARE a Duster person.

Duster is a line of evolved house dresses I co-founded a couple of years ago with Andrea Racey. It’s based on the concept of a Filipino house dress called a duster, that women wear while doing housework, caring for family or running errands. Dusters are practical and utilitarian and we craved a similarly pragmatic piece that also aesthetically aligned with how we dress today.

We threw pockets into every style, made sure the fabric had some stretch, was machine washable and didn’t wrinkle. They are light, packable, timeless, size inclusive and yes, easy. Each size spans about 4 dress sizes, so an XS = 0-4, S = 4-8, M = 8-12, L = 12-16, XL - 16-20. Message me if you have size or style questions.

As Duster season descends upon us, I felt compelled to share the line with you as much as I possibly could.

I asked my friend, the stylist and King of Mahjong, Jared Eng if he ever heard anything similar growing up. “Yes!! I was definitely told that growing up. I avoided yellow for most of my life, but that was before I really got into fashion, both personally and professionally as a stylist.” Said Eng.

He continues that yellow, like all colors, comes with nuance. Certain shades of yellow can wash people out and it’s less about the color itself and more about the specific tone and how it interacts with your complexion.

I bring this up partly because butter yellow is clearly everywhere, clashing beautifully with chocolate brown, navy, grass green, cream and however you prefer. And also because a couple of weeks ago I was listening to the Sam Sanders Show podcast where Sanders ranked his favorite rom coms and why. His top pick was Crazy Rich Asians for several reasons, but most memorably because of a story he shared about director Jon M Chu’s attempt to heal his fraught relationship with the word “yellow” via the film’s most climactic scene.

Apparently Chu had always been triggered by the word yellow because of its use as a demeaning slur toward Asian people. Once he heard “Yellow” by Coldplay, his perception changed. The song lyrics completely transformed how he received the word. Now, it was describing stars, beauty and the glow that comes with being in love. Chu dreamed of using “Yellow” sung in Mandarin during the engagement scene of his movie. Coldplay initially declined the request, but Chu didn’t stop there. He emailed Chris Martin telling him how the song reframed the word yellow for him and if I’m honest, I think it did for me, too.

When the word yellow came up in my teenage years, I would brace myself for an inevitable microaggression that would often follow connecting a color to my ethnicity. It was subtle, but it always stung. Hearing about Chu’s relationship with yellow drudged up a lot of this for me and then melted out into the literal color and being told as a blanket generalization that I couldn’t wear it. LAYERS!

I know that I CAN wear yellow. The impact and anxiety have certainly dissipated a lot for me since high school, but hearing Chu’s story made me realize that one word, one color, can hold multitudes of clashing emotions and that I was not the only one triggered by it.

I’d love to collage up a chic photo of me wearing yellow here, but SURPRISE! I don’t currently own any yellow except for ONE t-shirt which I do really like. I’ll be buying a few more things and will report back on how it’s going.

Eng imparted more helpful advice for styling yellow, especially for those who may just be coming into a comfort zone with it. “I think that (in that past) people were reacting to the idea of wearing one flat, unflattering shade head to toe. But when yellow is used thoughtfully, whether it’s the right shade, mixed with other colors, or styled with intention, it can look incredible.”

I realize yellow has been a trend for more than a minute and has staying power, so I will finally be accepting and partaking starting here:

This meditation on yellow kind of just hit me when I heard the story about Chu. It’s amazing how deep one color or word can cut especially if it’s been via what feels like a million microagressions.

I am giving myself a pat (see what I did there?) on the back for this less fashion/more vulnerable reflection on race and identity. Next week, let’s talk about everything I want (and expect) for Mother’s Day. OK?

Turns out I worked away from my home several more times this week and I am nothing if not consistent, so I’ve once again documented it and am sharing what shook out. Apparently, I refuse to stop wearing brown, cannot part with the aforementioned track pants and think I’ve found a groove with this pretty/sporty trend.

The Office aka the Los Angeles Times Where I Record My Podcast Live & Well.

This, minus the jacket is kind of my ideal pod/video look uniform - mostly monochromatic, structured but comfortable. It looks best on camera and injects a bit of confidence so I can lead a convo and focus on the guest, not my get up. I wore a printed dress to record the week before and when watching the tape realized why bold prints don’t usually work on camera. The flowy, shapelessness of the dress appeared kind of blah and blob-ish. I think that knit polos, wide leg jeans and a great cropped jacket or blazer are going to be my official pod look from here on out. #relatable? Ok no, but this formula works in most scenarios not just for podcast or video purposes.

The Designer Visit aka Nomasei Pop Up.

Parisian label Nomasei has a pop up in West Hollywood through the end of April and I dropped by to say hi to the designers and try on practically every pair. I truly can’t get over how comfortable these shoes are, even their new stilettos feel like they’re made for sprinting. The co-founders/designers Paule Tenaillon and Marine Braque met working white at Chloe as head shoe designer and head of production. I didn’t say this to them during our visit, but I’ve found Chloe shoes to be the most uncomfortable designer shoe out there and I wonder if they were intentional about doing the exact opposite when launching their own brand (mission accomplished.) Aside from comfort, the aesthetic is what I’d describe as familiar yet quirky. The pair I have on here called The Office is in a croc embossed leather and continues to be one of my favorite styles.

Their soon-to-be-released thong sandals are gorgeous on the foot and particularly fetching in silver leather. I wore my slightly elevated WFH daily uniform of brown track pants, crewneck sweatshirt and Salomon XT-C6s in Almond Milk (the fact that I wear sneakers in a color called Almond Milk immediately makes me insufferable) but I would wear this exact look sans Salomons and with the Nomasei heels for sure.

The Beauty Breakfast That Wasn’t aka I got Dressed for no Reason.

I had RSVPd to a breakfast for Alix Earle’s acne line Reale Actives and set out to attend Thursday morning. Now, I don’t follow Earle and am not too familiar with her content, but do know that she is everywhere, relevant and in some beef with Alex Cooper. I want to be aware of what she’s up to with this new beauty brand and definitely learn about the products. I approached the restaurant where the event was being held and was instructed by a security guard to get in a long line. When I inquired why there was a line to get in, he answered, “because the first 50 people get a free drink.”

This was a public event and gave radio station contest winner vibes. I am not above waiting in line at an event, but the scene was not what I expected or could handle this particular morning (honestly, any morning.) Plus, I swear some kids from my son’s middle school were standing a few people in front of me and that felt like the final straw. So I left, but I did wear this COS windbreaker that I am very into. I saw a girl at the COS store wearing it with a black bubble style skirt and it was so chic. I don’t have a bubble skirt, so wore it like a button down with just the top snap done and offset the sportiness with dainty ballet flats. Takeaway: never met Earle or learned about her acne line (or got my free drink!), but did like the look that the attempt at attending an influencer event produced.

Why I Firmly Believe That Woven Accessories are a Part of my DNA

I will be expounding further on this topic as a stand alone post, but want to begin with this amuse-bouche of woven accessories.

I would count woven accessories (or woven anything) as one of the core pillars of my style. Bags, shoes, headbands, ottomans, magazine racks. Bring on the basket weave/woven anything. I’ve deepened my love and understanding of the woven world by learning more about the indigenous weaving culture of the Philippines and how core it has been to our community for centuries. There are myriad ways weaving shows up in Filipino culture, but the indigenous art of the Dream Weavers of Mindanao is especially fascinating and beautiful.

The T’boli community in Mindanao weave visions and messages received in their dreams into cloths called T’nalak. Using thread derived from abaca fiber, each T’nalak illustrates these vivid dreams as well as commemorate significant events like birth, death and marriage. My mother brought me back some yards of T’nalak from one of her trips to the Philippines. The patterns are bold, vibrant and wonderfully angular. One can’t help but envision them used in interior design or as a wearable accessory.

While I love brands like Dragon Diffusion, Sensi Studio and Underwater Weaving, I try and also buy woven pieces from Filipino brands - some of whom use weaving as a way to uplift their workers out of the rampant poverty that is a harsh reality of the country.

These are two (for now) Filipino brands that do incredible woven accessories and that I suggest checking out:

Aranaz - I grew up hearing about this mother-daughter owned brand because their bags were quite aspirational at the time for a Filipino owned label. Aranaz takes indigenous craftsmanship of the Philippines and creates trend forward accessories. Using local materials like abaca fiber, rattan, shells and wooden beads, each piece is handmade and ships worldwide.

R2R - R2R originally started by upcycling unwanted scrap fabric into woven rugs and eventually bags. I learned about them through Pam Quinones deputy editor of Vogue Philippines who did a collaboration with R2R on the Loop Bag which I purchased and carry all the time. This style is R2R’s first totally handwoven bag. Proceeds from the sales go directly to an education fund for the R2R artisans and their families.

It’s an ongoing existential conversation I have (with mostly myself) about how having to promote one’s work as a writer is the actual work. In order to successfully work in media today, is the priority to be a front facing personality and more than part-time content creator? Judging by Wintour sitting for Annie Leibowitz and becoming an inextricable piece of the Devil Wears Prada promo puzzle, I’d say the answer is a hard YES.

Wintour arguably surpassed “editor” ages ago. She is a cultural juggernaut, a pop icon, the inspiration behind now 2 Devil Wears Prada films. I will say that when the book and first film came out, she was icy toward the coming cultural tsunami. She’s since warmed considerably, even presenting an Oscar alongside Anne Hathaway while almost cartoonishly embodying the cliches that provide the framework for the Miranda Priestly character.

Anyway, it’s more evidence to support my thesis that in many ways, the path from editor to influencer is indeed inevitable.

A few weeks ago, it came to my attention that the Wall Street Journal had posted a job listing for a “talent coach.” Curious, I clicked into the description and with each word, my eyes got wider until I discovered my own talent (no coaching needed) for an ability to somehow still be shocked by anything I read anywhere these days. The portion of the remit that piqued my attention most was, “Equipping our journalists with the skills and strategies needed to effectively build their personal brand, engage with audiences, amplify their work and navigate the complexities of various social-media platforms.”

I’m still unclear why I was the least bit shocked that a job like this exists and why I was perplexed by (and not applauding) a newspaper finally catching up with the times. Maybe seeing it as a formal role from a legacy media outlet conjured up a cartoonish mental picture of hard news journalists fiddling with fancy ring lights and trying to navigate Cap Cut. Or maybe it’s not as deep or dramatic as I’m making it out to be and the journey from typing in solitude to TikTok star can be and is painless even for people who largely began their careers behind the scenes and actively avoided centering themselves in a story.

If WSJ journalists are on their way to becoming brands, then for the rest of us, is the path from editor to influencer inevitable?

For some solid perspective I turned to a few much respected (by me and the fashion/beauty media community at large) writers who have not only grasped the shifting media landscape over the last few years, but they also navigate it from page to teleprompter with ease and are successfully building their voice across several platforms with authority and expertise.

“A lot of writers’ prospects today are in working for themselves.” Says Amy Odell, fashion and culture writer of The Back Row newsletter and New York Times best-selling author of “Anna: The Biography” and “Gwyneth: The Biography.” “It’s really hard to figure out how to get seen as someone who works independently now, and you have to act like an influencer in order to promote a business.”

Report, write, promote. Thinking about promotion as part of the writing and publishing process rather than awkwardly striving to become an influencer certainly sits more comfortably with me. “We didn’t become journalists to not get our things read.” Odell explains.

Odell, whose byline has been ubiquitous for more than a decade namely on The Cut, Business of Fashion, Cosmopolitan and the New York Times, began publishing Back Row 4 years ago. When her biography of Anna Wintour came out in 2021, she turned to TikTok to utilize the platform in promoting the book, which she says worked to increase sales and helped establish her as an expert. In addition to TikTok, she now regularly does green screen style commentary on Instagram to gain more eyeballs on her Substack which covers fashion and culture through weekly posts and a recently launched podcast. Aside from optimizing one’s reach, commentary and a fresh take on the fashion news of the day (or whatever your brand, er, beat is) are increasingly what readers want/expect now.

“We’re seeing big companies have their reporters and writers more front-facing and describe their stories in video form instead of just posting their link.” Says Kirbie Johnson, a beauty and culture reporter, host of the Gloss Angeles podcast and writer of the Ahead of The Kirb newsletter. “You need to meet people where they are,” she adds. “The written form is very important to me, but at same time you have to grow with the medium and grow with how people are getting their information.”

For legacy media and digital publications like The Cut, the lines are increasingly blurring between reporter and influencer and vice versa. Recently, beauty influencer Katie Fang debuted a column in The Cut called “According to Katie” where the internet personality with over 1M Instagram followers and 6.4M TikTok followers gives honest product reviews and posts GRWM videos. Creator Tefi Pessoa also joined The Cut as a “special contributor,” helming an advice column and hosting a pop culture podcast. Allure appointed makeup artist Sir John as their “editor-at-large” during New York Fashion Week this season.

While more media companies are hiring traditional content creators to fill contributor or even on- staff editorial roles, Johnson asserts that for many who began their careers as reporters the aspiration has gone from being an in-house talking head to being your own talking head. Especially as media jobs become even more scarce and freelance rates continue to fall, cultivating one’s own channels are creating more certainty and opportunity.

“When you’ve worked hard on building your Substack and Instagram, it feels nice to get a brand deal.” Says Odell. “Journalists need to look out for themselves, and it makes me happy when I see writers doing creator-type content on social media to promote their work. I respect the hustle.”

Cut to (gulp) 20-ish years later and I’ve watched their ascent and steady build. But no matter how big their world has gotten, they have stayed true to their affection for vintage and their commitment to a beautiful, wearable and often playful interpretation of nostalgia. Everything they do is through the lens of optimism and possibility (hence, The Great) and as much as we’ve done together (stories, photo shoots, glamping trips and dinner parties) the dream is to tag along on one of their shopping road trips where they source inspiration, antiques and art. There’s still time! But, until then, the next best thing is a list of their favorite shopping spots. Places they make a point to visit when in town, have gotten friendly with the shop owners and perhaps even gathered inspiration for their latest collection.

Edith Machinist — Lower East Side, New York - An LES institution — vintage dresses, handbags, and shoes all in impeccable condition, arranged by color, spanning the 1940s through the 1980s. It’s the rare vintage shop where everything feels wearable and modern, not costume-y. The boot and bag selection alone is worth the trip downtown.

Market Market — Palm Springs, CA - A sprawling former department store packed with vintage clothing, furniture, art, and housewares. It’s more immersive experience than store — every visit turns up something completely different. We always make time for it when we’re in the desert.

The Phoenix Shop — Big Sur, CA - The shop is genuinely worth the detour — two floors of global finds, local art, ceramics, jewelry, boutique clothing, and body care. It’s the kind of place where you spend $300 on things you didn’t know you needed and feel nothing but good about it.

Ransack Vintage — Oceanside, CA - A deeply curated western vintage shop right on the Coast Highway in Oceanside — think American Wild West from the late 1800s through the early 1980s. We’re talking feed sack blouses, selvedge denim, vintage cowboy boots, and the kind of Americana that looks like it was pulled straight from our mood board. The owners have an incredible eye and it shows in every single rack.

Graveyard Vintage — Boise, Idaho — Hand-selected premier vintage clothing from the 1940s–90s, with Levi’s, band tees, military pieces, and sports jackets. More clothing-focused and cool.

The End in Yucca Valley — The End has been a vintage oasis in the Mojave Desert since 2012, owned by artist and stylist Kime Buzzelli — it’s right on the 29 Palms Highway in Yucca Valley, just west of Joshua Tree.

The shop carries an eclectic mix of vintage and designer clothes, jewelry, books, tarot decks, and unique works by local artists including Kime herself.

Using - Aesop Sculpt Hair Polish - I’ve never bought or used hair or skincare products from Aesop. I file the brand squarely into home scents, candles and hand wash. But I wandered into the Century City store a few weeks ago to replenish my favorite hand sanitizer and the guy working their complimented my slick back. Flattered by a Gen Z-er paying me kudos for my hair skills, he quickly burst my bubble with his next comment - a recommendation for this hair gel, promising that it would make for an ever better looking slick back. I bought it, left slightly annoyed that I was so easily upsold but am now unable to live without this super lightweight, non-sticky, earthy smelling hair goop that does indeed make my slick back look much, much better than before I walked into Aesop. It holds every hair in place, but with no shine, no crunchiness, no waxiness or greasiness. I don’t know but it’s magic and if you have fly aways or want to stick your spring/summer slick back, this is a must-have.

Buying - Amanu Zanzibar Woven Leather Shoulder Bag - I’ve loved Amanu since founder Anita Patrickson opened a gorgeous shop for custom, handmade leather sandals in West Hollywood several years ago. I get my sandals re-soled by her talented team every spring and wear them all summer. Every style is timeless and still made by artisans in LA and South Africa. Her bags are possibly even better than the sandals, which are perfection. The Zanzibar has been on my mind since I first saw it last year and I think it will be an early birthday present to myself this month.

Talking - On Live + Well this week, I sat down with Tower 28 founder Amy Liu. We chatted about the skin microbiome and how we often give ourselves sensitive skin by getting too aggressive with ingredients and actives. She is a wealth of knowledge about eczema and has done an incredible job creating a gorgeous line for those with sensitive skin and anyone who loves using clean, effective products that protect the skin barrier but also have great color payoff and are fun to use.

Until Allegra emails me back, I’ll be distracting and celebrating myself with the usual fare, plus purchases justified as “birthday gifts” that I unquestionably deserve. I feel like this is a Taurus thing? Astrology friends help me out here.

Using: Lendava Body Care with Retinol

I’ve never thought much about my knees, until last year. For most of my life, shorts and short skirts were not the enemy. But something about sliding into my mid-late forties ushered in a slight sag above each knee. My plan is simply to be religious about using a body cream with retinol concentrated at my knees. I’ll go ahead and slather the same cream at my decolette and the back of my arms. Will report back, but I’ve heard amazing things about this cream and can’t wait to see if and how it improves my skin quality this shorts season.

In early March, the New York Times published a story called, “I Hated Blush for 20 Years. Then Lady Gaga Changed My Mind.” The author claims that the Haus Labs Color Fuse Longwear Lip + Cheek Blush changed her mind about blush due to Gaga’s version which has a “satin finish” and melts right into the skin with a “creamy, buttery texture.” I remembered that I had this blush and had yet to try it. I did and couldn’t agree more with the NYT writer/blush convert. It’s sheer, lightweight, glassy/glossy and glowy. It makes me want to go on a sunny vacation and officially shed winter. I love this shade called Glassy Cayenne - it’s the perfect nude/brown for an earthy start to spring.

He co-founded @muleboyz, the world’s first mule account, which as someone who has always gravitated toward an orthopedic-like flat, makes me feel seen. He has a new show called Opening Hours, where he visits shops around the world to go in depth on the merch, the owner’s insight and of course, who’s shopping and what they’re buying.

I think what I appreciate most about DeLeon’s work is his ability to weave cultural touchstones into projects in a way that’s seamless and impactful. He has collaborated with Bode on pieces that incorporate brand iconography from his childhood in the Philippines into shirts and jackets. He has/does spearheaded events and collections highlighting a diverse body of artists and designers at Nordstrom and dispatches inspiring and influential street style and showroom happenings from fashion week’s and trade shows around the world.

Considering the visibility he has into what’s new/next/important with retail and brands, him sharing his shortlist on the physical shops he finds most inspiring is quite a get.

There came a point in time where the LES became synonymous with vintage stores and exotic snack shops that double as a front for legalized weed shops. Leisure Centre stands out because the owner Frank always keeps things a bit left of center. It’s like a hidden gem full of hidden gems. In addition to Stone Island and band tees, his bootleg merch of items like George magazine caps keep things novel, but the real sleeper are the housewares. Sometimes if you ask nicely he’ll let you know if he’s sitting on any recent finds.

Luke’s / @lukesnyc - 261 Broome St, New York, NY 10002
Luke is an old friend and also from Virginia, but his independent shop sits in a unique space between vintage and a Japanese-style used select shop. You’ll find plenty of gently worn Chrome Hearts, Rick Owens, and Stüssy, but the real finds are the sunglasses that he keeps behind the glass. I’ve gotten some of my JMM frames and old Chanel shades from here.

Williamsburg can be a trek sometimes…and it’s more overrun than ever, but there are still plenty of great spots you don’t have to wait in line for. Ebreo is one of them. Run by menswear enthusiast Julian Colucci, it’s the best place to get a vintage suit. He specializes in Italian stuff like Armani, Brioni, Zegna, and the like. But I’ve got a great non-licensed YSL men’s suit from the ‘80s here, and it’s even made in France. His prices are more than fair, but the real value comes in the knowledge he shares about every product.

Using - Tatcha The Milky Sunscreen SPF 50 - I know, I know…another day, another sunscreen launch, but this new one from Tatcha has been a game changer. It’s incredibly lightweight, leaves a gorgeous sheen on the skin and is a great primer for under makeup. No scent, did I mention weightless? Buying - Le Specs Numero Ocho Sunglasses in Teak - I’ve totally bought into the shield sunglasses trend this season. I see it as a pendulum swing away from all of the uncomfortably small looking sunnies and I am totally fine with it. This take on a shield is super chic and little less sporty than the ski goggle vibes other versions give. I am particularly drawn to the teak, but the icy pink is also a good option for spring.

Talking - On the Live + Well podcast this week, I spoke to celebrity fitness trainer Harley Pasternak. When I say this convo is like a breath of fresh air from all of the overwhelming fitness, exercise, health-related info out there, I mean it. Harley is super grounded and realistic about what is takes to live a well-rounded fitness life. We get into his case for eating carbs, what diet and exercise really means in today’s digital and semaglutide-fueled society and where to find the very best desserts in L.A.

Tailoring tends to break the intended line/silhouette, especially if it’s a flare or boot cut, but even with a more relaxed fit. Hemming has often resulted in a baggy back of the knee and dumpy butt that doesn’t read “slouchy and effortless” just baggy sack/accidental vacation capris. It can all go off the rails real quick and the confusion/anxiety that can come with a baggy crop for short folk is consistently high. If you’ve read this far, then you know this better than I could ever explain here.

When I tried these 3 pairs of relaxed cropped jeans that scream “spring/summery!” I was elated to learn that both the “relax” and “cropped” characteristics were not lies and they stop at the right place on my legs. We all have different leg lengths and waist regions. I have a short waist and long-ish legs. My torso is that of a Spam can. It’s like a little rectangle. Before you chide me for the negative self talk, jokes on you because I love Spam and grew up eating it with rice and eggs weekly. The can the “meat” comes in is adorable and by association, so is my torso.

Speaking of adorable, this set from Lee was maybe my favorite denim on denim look as of late; very Pollock-esque as in what the painter wore while working, not his actual art, but the bleach splatters are kind of that too. The loose painter-style jacket and even looser cropped baggy pants were très slouch and the pants sat low slung at my hips. Worn with a belt was much more my speed (I don’t really do low slung anything due to my aforementioned short waist and spoiler because I’m not 19) and I could adjust the length a bit and create more contrast given all the bagginess.

I’ve long loved these jeans. They remind me exactly of the jeans my dad wore when I was a kid (Rustler) but if they were tailored and cropped for me. Crop is the focus here and these darling Wayne’s do the job. There is a slight kick flare, but just enough not to be bone straight. I am wearing a 25 but could size down for a more snatched hip/waist. The Montana wash is my favorite but they come in a lot of options. I have to get the Graphite wash as well, as I know I will wear the heck out of them.

These jeans are the most 90s of the 3 and judging on how many hundred times “CBK” appears in the subject lines of my inbox, I sense society continues to be obsessed with the 90s. The Billie from one of my long time absolute fave brands Amo is a best seller and for good reason. It’s honestly the perfect summer jean ( I might size down if you’re petite and have a short waist, so they don’t dip too low.) They are more rigid than the Lee above and maintain the wide leg, mid-rise, crop shape all day without bagging out.

Bart’s Books, Ojai, CA. I love independent bookstores, especially when I travel. I have so many favorites - Book Soup in LA, Powell’s in Portland, The Strand in NYC. Today I’ll spotlight Bart’s Books in Ojai. It’s a house turned outdoor book store and I always stop in at this magical place and wander - usually reemerging hours later with a coffee table book, a children’s book, or a well-loved copy of one of my favorite authors like Agatha Christie, Haruki Murakami, or Patti Smith.

Barney’s LA - R.I.P. to the retail mecca that made me feel so fancy and special. It was the place I spent my first big girl paycheck on a pair of Manolo Blahnik pumps. I miss the epic staircase, I miss the $37 salad, I miss meeting up with a friend to catch up and smell all the candles and try on all the sunglasses. I saved a few retail shopping bags and my Barneys credit card. For me, shopping IRL has never been the same.

Lavender, orchid, lilac, faded purple, hazy grape…whatever you want to call it. It’s a strange color that is traditionally feminine and easily toddler-esque. Doc McStuffins comes to mind. But, Chase Infiniti did wear a lavender Louis Vuitton gown to the Oscars last weekend. And when I think of chic and unexpected shades and color combos, lavender instantly enters the mix, and this is coming from someone who wears a pretty boring palette of run-of-the-mill neutrals. I know, I know, pastels for spring? Hear me out.

Lavender For Daily Life

For starters, I like lavender enough that I changed the branding here at The Drop By from orange (it was giving Home Depot and um, Substack logo) to this wash of lavender and it feels like a brain reset for me. Also, last year the combo of lavender and red and lavender and brown that started popping up everywhere was sprinkled around just enough and didn’t feel contrived like ahem, a lot of cloying trends, (looking at you ladies who are still carrying your giant bag under your arm like it’s natural and normal. We get it, you’re effortlessly slouchy and wildly unbothered.) But back to Lavender Land because it’s pretty-without-trying over here. Lavender looks great with white, with brown as a polka dot and as a bold paisley. It is stunning against tan skin and makes me want to go on spring break with a raffia tote bag and a spray can SPF, immediately.

The All Things dress from Duster is giving whimsical-utilitarian and I can’t think of a more apt sartorial sentiment for my state of mind at the moment given everything happening (crumbling) around us. Aside from the fun color, Dusters are designed to be super easy to wear, can be machine washed, have stretch, pockets and are sized inclusively. There are several other Dusters that come in this chic Orchid shade. From structured to soft and super feminine, each has it’s own place in your spring/summer wardrobe. I wore mine to a brand lunch recently and as easily as I do with a pair of flip flops to my son’s (TOO EARLY and HOT) Sunday morning soccer game.

The avid traveler with a very keen eye for collectibles and statement jewelry considers an Orange County staple and an IYKYK outpost in Rome as must-visits.

A’maree’s in Newport Beach is one of my favorite stores to discover unique jewelry designers. They have the most beautiful curation of clothing, jewelry and homeware. The architecture of the store is stunning, it sits overlooking the water. There’s nowhere more beautiful to shop.

Atelier Bomba is my first stop when I am in Rome. I cherish each piece i have collected. The garments are so well made and feel so luxurious. The idea that they are all small batch and not mass distributed make them that much more special.

My friends recently relocated and opened a new store in Carmel By The Sea called Communitie. They previously had a store in Amagansett. I tend to stumble upon new designers and brands every time I stop in. They carry their own designs as well as a very curated selection of clothing, accessories and footwear. In this day and age where we are being exposed to so much digitally it feels really rewarding when you discover something IRL.

Talking: I chatted with author and environmental activist Lindsay Dahl on the Live + Well podcast last week. She wrote, “Cleaning House: The Fight to Rid Our Homes of Toxic Chemicals” which is an informative, not overwhelming guide to cleaning up our immediate and larger environments from toxic chemicals. Lindsay has been involved in passing 30 laws to protect our personal health, public safety and battling climate change. She’s brilliant and her advice is effective and realistic for the average citizen to act upon.

This may have cemented the idea of defining my eyes into my psyche and ever since, I’ve never felt “complete” if I am not wearing eyeliner. For the past 6 years or so, that’s been a cat eye using a liquid formula - always precise and damn near perfect whether I am hopping onto a quick Zoom, headed to a PTA meeting or recording an entire podcast interview on camera in the studio. My eyes have only told one story and for many reasons, I want to switch it up.

Something to Easily Remove Any Unwanted Eyeliner

My job has given me awareness of and access to some of the best aesthetic practitioners and plastic surgeons in the country (and don’t worry, each time I’m reporting a story or interviewing for my podcast I abruptly abandon any sense of professionalism and ask them, “but do you think I need a lower bleph?”) and they say, “yes.” Cut to some hemming and hawing about cost and slicing into my eyes, a few consultations and then being placed on a waitlist and here we are. I could get in sooner with a doctor I met with in December, but then discovered there was a Reddit thread about some less than great results with him and decided that it’s worth a few more months of waiting to get in with someone I feel a thousand percent about.

Until then, I’m certain most of the products I try and buy lately are centered around perking up my lower lid area and/or creating a general lifting effect to offset the saggy baggy sitch. Now, since it’s a contour issue and not about de-puffing or color correcting there is really only so much you can do outside of surgery or some type of prosthetic (weird that I’m open to facial props like Jim Carey in The Mask?) There’s also always sunglasses which I am avid collector of, but those also only go so far…indoors.

Here’s the prod squad I’ve put on regular rotation until I’m moved from standby to surgery.

1. Inkey List Caffeine Eye Cream. The brand’s best-selling product in the US and for good reason. Caffeine tightens and stimulates the delicate under eye skin. This formula feels really hydrating but still wears really well under makeup (meaning no pilling or greasiness.) Plus, I really like the Inkey List’s approach to keeping skincare simple. Plus, plus: It’s an easy peasy $12.

2. NakedBeauty MD Biopeptide Growth Factor Eye Therapy. Created by renowned celeb plastic surgeon, Dr. Cat Chang, she developed this eye cream and her patches for patients post-procedure to strengthen the skin and restore elasticity. I am using mostly products that contain growth factors for this very reason, because while surgery is super effective, if there is a lot of skin laxity (which happens first where skin is thinnest - eyes, neck) results won’t be as great.

3. BioEffect EFG Power Eye Cream. I learned about this Icelandic line last year and have been using the essence, serum, eye cream and face cream regularly for a few months. The products contain replicas of human growth factors found in barley, and EGF Epidermal Growth Factor to compensate for our skin’s decline in production of growth factors. I use this eye cream at night as it’s thick and leaves the under eye area still super plump by morning.

4. Jones Road Beauty, The Face Pencil Concealer. Not gonna lie, I don’t totally understand a lot of Jones Road products. Love their mascara and this pencil but that Miracle Balm feels like a hoax and doesn’t show up on my skin as anything but a clear sticky streak. But the good news: this little pencil is great as a last step in that ridge that forms between an eye bag and the cheekbone. After I use a great concealer (see below) I pop some “light” into that crevice (that a bleph will eventually eradicate) with this dense pencil in a shade slightly lighter than the concealer. It diffuses the darkness of that crevice and the lighter line brought a little bit upward gives a subtle lift to the face. Since it’s a fairly pointy pencil, it’s easy to use in that crevice as well as in the outer and inner corners of the eyes to brighten an area where you might have some discoloration.

5. NakedBeautyMD Damask Rose Revitalizing Gold Infused Hydrogel Eye Mask. The mask companion to Dr. Chang’s eye cream. These pretty pink patches lock in moisture and those aforementioned growth factors. I leave these on for about 20 minutes ahead of an event or on-camera moment and always notice a brightening effect. Pop some Inkey List Caffeine Eye Cream on top and then your concealer and Jones Road concealer pencil and you’re almost, almost there.

6. RMS Revitalize Hydra Concealer (Medium coverage, high-performance concealer with skincare benefits.) This is the best beauty discovery of 2026 (so far) and by “discovery”, I mean my friend Alexis texted me to say she is obsessed with it, so I bought it and now I am obsessed with it. I would honestly say that after using it the first couple of times, I looked like I had actually had my lower bleph done. It evens out, brightens, lightens, boosts confidence, erases tiredness and is a really creamy but not too heavy or cakey texture. I use Shade WO13 if that means anything or is helpful to you at all. Try it and let me know if you love it as much as I do. Spritz your Beauty Blender sponge with some hydrating rose water or any face spray you like and use that to pat this concealer into the under eye area.

I’ve asked some stylish people I know for 3 stores, anywhere in world where they would: gladly take a detour and/or wake a sleeping toddler for, battle strangers for a parking spot, maybe stand in a line and wait to be let in, all to be able to wander the aisles, shop the shelves, gather creative inspo and indulge in some retail therapy.

The stores can be any category or a mix of a few (clothing, cook wear, candles, taxidermy, tea cups... ) In their city, hometown, far flung locale, airport, strip mall, flea market stall or temporary pop up; as long as it’s offline, not e-commerce dependent and a sublimely tactile experience.

I actually just wrote about why I love this store SO much in a recent newsletter! Dear Society has an amazing assortment of contemporary brands—like Rue Sophie, Deiji Studios, St. Agni, Flattered and Still Here, and has an incredible curation of vintage. I always leave with a new to me piece, that quickly becomes a favorite in my wardrobe. The space itself also features a matcha bar, making it just as much a place you want to hang out as it is to shop.

This is a place I visit to get inspired. A lot of aspirational (for me) brands like The Row, Dries, Auralee, and Margiela. This is also where I bought my first Flore Flore tee, and I think the first place to carry in NY? Again, another space that you just want to linger as long as possible, it’s the best vibe.

I visit LIEF almost weekly, mainly to buy gifts for friends, but I always end up picking up something for myself. It’s one of my favorite home and gift stores, offering an amazing curation of ceramics, glassware, pillows, linens, serve ware, candles & more! They also have an excellent assortment of jewelry, and I LOVE their card selection.

This was the case on a quick trip to New York where I was packing for a friend’s wedding, some Broadway show action and a day of work meetings. Maybe like you, I make a point of walking everywhere, so those shoes have gottat be not merely “super comfy”, but like like 60+ blocks in 39 degree weather comfortable and always ready for an unexpected side errand/shopping trip or two.

Happy trails and travels this winter should you be en route somewhere chic but chilly. Think of the packing task as a fantastic sartorial puzzle where you have to bring things that do triple duty and make for very comfortable, durable and stylish looks. Remember: It’s never cool to overpack and not be able to handle your own sH*t or have all your belongings strewn about and hitting the person sitting next to you on the plane in the arm and head (looking at you girl with the dog, dog carrier, dog bag, dog toys, duffle, two jackets, pillow, scarf, neck pillow, eye mask and a tote bag in seat 19C - also, a 5 hour flight doesn’t really warrant taking your shoes off.) I know strategizing for winter travel can be challenging, but pack light, pack right and always try everything on ahead of time to ensure you’re bringing only what you’ll actually wear.

First thing’s first. When I love something, I do not shut up about it. Not only do I not and never gate keep, I have an uncontrollable urge to share the thing with anyone in ear shot who wants to know about it, do it, buy it or try it. Up Up and Away...

I have had a tight neck and shoulders for as long as I can remember. During class my sophomore year in high school, after my newly discovered scoliosis diagnosis caused a tingly tightness in my right shoulder, I asked a kid I didn’t know if he would massage it. Luckily, that situation turned out way less creepy than it could have, but my need to destress my neck and shoulders still knows no bounds to this day. Thankfully my boundaries and bar have gotten much (much) higher and once I heard about the Yolu Japanese Head Spa opening in LA, I beelined over for a signature 60 Sayo treatment.
