I’ve always been someone who likes to stay busy. I love my work, I’m constantly thinking about new ideas, and I genuinely enjoy creating and sharing the things I discover with all of you. But one thing I’ve learned over the years is that taking time off is just as important as showing up, so for the next few weeks, I’m going to take a little break.

I’ve been thinking a lot about slowing down lately—not waiting until we’re exhausted or overwhelmed, but actually making downtime part of our lives. For me, that means giving myself permission to step away from my usual schedule, spend less time on my phone, travel, be with family and friends, and really enjoy these last few weeks of summer. And I have to say, I’m really looking forward to it.

When I was younger, I felt like I always had to be doing something. There was another goal to reach, another project to work on, or something else on my list that needed my attention. I still have that drive but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become much more intentional about how I spend my time. I like working hard and will continue doing what I love, but I also want to enjoy my life while I’m doing it. I want to travel and actually be present, have a long lunch without thinking about what I need to do next, take a walk without constantly checking my phone, and leave some room in my days for things that aren’t scheduled or productive. I’m realizing more and more that those moments are just as important as everything we accomplish.

You’ll still see some content from me while I’m away—much of it has already been planned and created—but behind the scenes, I’ll be spending less time online and more time enjoying life offline. My hope is to come back feeling refreshed, inspired and excited for everything I have planned for fall.

I recently discovered a side of Cabo I never knew existed, and Costa Palmas is now one of my favorite luxury escapes.

Tucked away on the East Cape of Los Cabos, this special community feels nothing like the Cabo most of us picture. Think soft sand, swimmable beaches, the calm turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from the crowds. When Michael and I stayed at the Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas in early May, the water was calm, warm, and absolutely beautiful.

Over a few days, we snorkeled, went horseback riding along the beach, and spent an afternoon at Delphine, a beach club that felt straight out of the South of France. One evening, we took a boat to the marina for an unforgettable dinner at Mozza Baja before returning to our gorgeous oceanfront room at the Four Seasons. It was the perfect combination of privacy, luxury, and relaxation.

Why Costa Palmas Is So Special

Costa Palmas is a 1,500-acre luxury resort and residential community on the East Cape of Los Cabos, tucked along the Sea of Cortez and far from Cabo’s busier resort corridor. It’s home to the stunning Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas.

Beyond the resort, Costa Palmas features more than two miles of swimmable beach, a marina, championship golf, excellent restaurants, private residences, and an exclusive beach and yacht club. Everything feels beautifully designed, incredibly private, and wonderfully relaxed. Amanvari, Aman’s first resort in Mexico, is also opening there soon! We had a tour of the property during our stay, and it looks quite incredible.

Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas

Our oceanfront room was spacious, beautifully designed, and incredibly comfortable. I loved the contemporary architecture, clean lines, and seamless indoor-outdoor design that blends so naturally with the surrounding landscape. Even the bathrooms felt like a destination of their own—thoughtfully designed, oversized, and absolutely gorgeous.

As beautiful as the property is, what truly sets it apart is the service. Every detail was handled so thoughtfully—from arranging dinner reservations and activities to anticipating our needs before we even had to ask.

The spa was another highlight. Michael and I had a couples massage in a treatment room that opened onto our own private outdoor sanctuary with a plunge pool. Afterward, we relaxed with a beautiful spread of cheeses, chocolate-covered strawberries, and Champagne—the perfect way to end the experience.

The resort also has an excellent fitness center and a few lovely boutiques that are worth browsing between the beach and the pool.

Beach: The Biggest Surprise

One of my favorite things about Costa Palmas was the beach.

The calm Sea of Cortez, soft sand, and swimmable water are completely different from what I typically think of when I think of Cabo. When Michael and I visited in early May, the water was comfortably warm.

I loved being able to walk right into the ocean for a swim instead of just admiring it from a lounge chair. It reminded me so much of the Caribbean—and I never expected to find that in Cabo.

Snorkeling, Horseback Riding & More

One of the things I loved most about Costa Palmas was how easy it was to mix adventure with relaxation.

We spent one morning snorkeling in the crystal-clear Sea of Cortez and another horseback riding along the beach. Riding with the ocean, desert, and mountains all around us was one of those experiences I’ll never forget.

If you’re looking for even more to do, there are plenty of options, from golf and boating to fishing, diving, and hiking. Or you can do what I did most afternoons—find a beach chair and enjoy the view.

Where to Eat:

Mozza Baja
One of my favorite meals of the trip was at Mozza Baja. Nancy Silverton’s restaurant is located in Marina Village, and we took a short sunset boat ride over for dinner, which made the whole evening feel even more special. The food was excellent, the setting was beautiful, and it’s definitely a restaurant I’d recommend.

Delphine
Delphine is another must, especially if you love the beach clubs in the South of France. Think a long lunch by the water, rosé and Champagne, great music and a fun crowd. My advice is to make a later lunch reservation and leave the afternoon open to enjoy the scene.

Milos, The Nursery & Limón
We also dined at Estiatorio Milos, Limón, and The Nursery. Each has a beautiful setting and a different vibe, making them all enjoyable options during our stay.

One of the things that makes Costa Palmas feel so unique is that it’s not just a resort—it’s an entire luxury community. During our visit, we toured the private beach and yacht club, as well as the golf club, which gave us a real sense of the lifestyle being created here. Everything feels beautifully designed, private, and incredibly peaceful.

Why I’d Go Back

Costa Palmas has everything I look for in a vacation: a gorgeous swimmable beach, beautiful surroundings, incredible luxury, great restaurants, lots of activities (if you want them), and that peaceful feeling that helps you truly unwind. Right now, it’s still a hidden gem, so I highly recommend checking it out for your next stay!

For my LA friends, it’s also incredibly easy to get to, which is always good news for Angelinos. Cabo is about a two-hour flight, followed by roughly an hour’s drive to Costa Palmas, making it perfect for a long weekend or a three-night escape. You arrive home feeling like you’ve had a real vacation!

In honor of National Clean Beauty Day, I wanted to share why clean beauty has become such an important part of my life—and why it continues to be a cornerstone of everything I share here on The Glow Girl.

As a beauty editor and content creator for more than 25 years, I’ve had a front row seat to the evolution of the beauty industry. I’ve tested thousands of products over the years, interviewed countless founders and experts, and watched trends come and go. Through it all, one thing has become increasingly important to me: being intentional about what I put on my skin every single day.

Our skin is our largest organ, and while perfection isn’t the goal, I believe making thoughtful choices where we can matters. For me, clean beauty isn’t about fear or perfectionism—it’s about choosing products that combine beautiful textures, effective ingredients, luxurious experiences, and ingredient standards that align with my values.

Over the years, I’ve also become more educated about some of the ingredients commonly found in beauty and personal care products that I personally choose to avoid whenever possible. Ingredients like parabens, phthalates, PFAS (”forever chemicals”), formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, oxybenzone, and undisclosed fragrance ingredients are some of the biggest ones on my list.

The good news is that clean beauty has come a long way. Gone are the days of having to sacrifice performance for cleaner formulations. Some of the best products I use today often outperform many traditional luxury beauty brands.

Because I spend so much time researching, testing, and comparing products, one of my goals has become helping you navigate what can often feel like an overwhelming category. There are thousands of products on the market, and not all “clean” products are created equal.

Think of me as your beauty editor and trusted friend who does the testing for you. I try products so you don’t have to. I pay attention to ingredient lists, efficacy, textures, wear time, packaging, and whether a product truly delivers on its promises before I ever recommend it to this community. So many friends ask me how I maintain a glowing complexion at 61—without going under the knife. The truth? It takes a lot of research to find the treatments that separate hype from results. I spend quite a bit of time digging into what’s safe, what actually works, and what’s truly worth the investment.

Over the years, I’ve developed a method that saves both time and money while delivering real results. There are treatments I absolutely swear by, like Potenza and Matrix Pro, both of which have helped improve my skin’s texture, firmness, and overall glow. I’m also always curious about what’s next. One treatment currently on my radar is XERF, a newer Korean radiofrequency treatment designed to tighten and firm the skin with little to no downtime. It’s still very new, but the early buzz has been promising, so I’m intrigued and considering giving it a try.

Step 1: Don’t Fall for the Hype

Just because a treatment is trending doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Take Morpheus8, for example—many friends who tried it ended up needing facelifts later because they didn’t get the results promised. Trends can be exciting, but I focus on results that truly last instead of jumping on every new bandwagon. Remember that PR and marketing can weigh in on your decisions.

Step 2: Check RealSelf.com Ratings First

I head straight to RealSelf.com to see what real people think. To me, it’s like going on Amazon and reading reviews for beauty treatments, plastic surgeons, and so much more, complete with before-and-after photos. My rule: only consider treatments with at least 90% and up “Worth It” ratings.

Here’s what I found recently:

These numbers give me a quick “yes or no” before I dig deeper.

Step 3: Read the Reviews (The Good and the Bad)

Numbers alone don’t tell the whole story. I read reviews to understand:

• The positive results people actually saw

• Any side effects or downtime they experienced

• Whether the results were worth the cost

For example, Potenza reviewers raved about the minimal downtime and natural-looking results, while Morpheus8 reviews were mixed—some results looked great, but others reported complications.

Step 4: Choose the Right Provider

Even the best treatment can go wrong in inexperienced hands. I only trust top-tier, reputable aestheticians and doctors who are known for their expertise. In LA, I go to and recommend the following people for treatments.

• What results can I realistically expect?

• How long is the recovery?

• What are the risks and side effects?

• How many sessions will I need—and why?

If answers feel vague or overly salesy, walk away.

Step 6: Consider Your Lifestyle

Even the most effective treatment can feel like a bad investment if it doesn’t fit your schedule. I prioritize treatments with minimal downtime that integrate easily into my life. Potenza and Matrix Pro are great examples—they deliver results without derailing my routine.

Since moving to Los Angeles about 14 years ago, I’ve become much more mindful about protecting my skin from the sun while still maintaining a healthy, glowy complexion. As someone who spends a lot of time outdoors—whether I’m walking, traveling, horseback riding, or simply enjoying a beautiful day—I’ve learned that daily sun protection is one of the best investments you can make in your skin.

Supergoop! Mineral Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40

This mineral version of the iconic Unseen Sunscreen has quickly become one of my favorite makeup-friendly SPFs. It’s weightless, invisible on the skin, and leaves such a smooth velvety finish. I love using this one under makeup because it almost acts like a primer while still giving excellent broad-spectrum protection. The formula also contains red algae to help defend against blue light and meadowfoam seed oil for hydration. One of the cleanest formulas from Supergoop! and such an easy everyday sunscreen.

Suntegrity Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer SPF 30

This is probably the classic Suntegrity product. It’s a clean mineral sunscreen with non-nano zinc oxide that doubles as a moisturizer and primer. It has a hydrating, slightly dewy finish and works well on mature skin. On olive skin, you may notice a little brightening initially, but it blends in much better than many traditional mineral sunscreens. y and gives skin a healthy, natural-looking glow.

True Botanicals Skin Barrier Sun Shield SPF 30

This mineral sunscreen feels more like skincare than sunscreen. Formulated with non-nano zinc oxide and nourishing botanical ingredients, it provides broad-spectrum protection while helping support the skin barrier. I love the lightweight, hydrating texture and dewy finish, which makes it especially nice for mature or drier skin types. While it may leave a slight brightening effect on deeper or olive skin tones, it blends in much more seamlessly than many traditional mineral sunscreens.

This ultra-clean mineral sunscreen has become one of my favorite body SPFs. The formula is non-toxic, reef-safe, and made with only a handful of simple ingredients, making it especially great for sensitive skin. It glides onto the skin beautifully, blends in without a white cast, and leaves skin feeling soft, nourished, and protected. Such a great everyday clean sunscreen option—especially because it feels like you are putting on your favorite moisturizer.

Sky & Sol Face and Body Sunscreen SPF 50

I love how simple and clean this formula is. Sky & Sol uses only a handful of pure ingredients, including grass-fed tallow and non-nano zinc oxide, without fragrances, preservatives, seed oils, or chemical UV filters. It gives beautiful protection while still feeling nourishing on the skin, and it’s water-resistant which makes it perfect for active days outdoors. No heavy residue, no irritation — just healthy, protected skin. They also make a fantastic SPF lip balm.

Saint Jane Luxury Body Ritual SPF 30

This sunscreen feels incredibly luxurious on the skin and almost more like body skincare than traditional SPF. Formulated with non-nano zinc oxide, green tea extract, hyaluronic acid, and CBD, it helps hydrate, soothe, and protect all at once. The texture is lightweight, absorbs quickly, and leaves the skin feeling smooth and nourished without heaviness. Such a beautiful everyday body SPF.

Supergoop! PLAY 100% Mineral Lotion SPF 50

If you’re looking for a mineral body sunscreen that offers strong protection and is easy to wear, this is a great option. Formulated with zinc oxide, it provides broad-spectrum SPF 50 coverage while feeling lighter and more blendable than many traditional mineral sunscreens. I like that it absorbs well, doesn’t feel overly greasy, and is water-resistant, making it a good choice for beach days, long walks, and outdoor activities. While not as ingredient-minimalist as some of the smaller clean beauty brands, it’s one of the more wearable mineral body sunscreens I’ve tried.

OneSkin OS-01 Lip SPF

One of the easiest places to forget sun protection is your lips, yet they’re exposed to UV damage every single day. I’ve been loving the OneSkin OS-01 Lip SPF because it combines mineral sun protection with the brand’s longevity-focused OS-01 peptide technology. The formula helps hydrate and protect while supporting smoother, healthier-looking lips over time. Unlike many SPF lip products, it feels lightweight, nourishing, and comfortable to wear throughout the day. They just came out with a tinted version in the perfect shade of nude pink. I’m obsessed and always keep one on hand.

One of the questions I get asked most often—especially from women over 50—is how I keep my hair healthy, shiny, and strong after menopause. Trust me, I know firsthand how much our hair changes as we get older. My hair has always been a big part of my identity, so keeping it in the best condition now is a priority!

One of the most frustrating things I noticed in my late 50s was how much my hair texture changed. It became drier, more fragile, and definitely less forgiving with heat styling. I also noticed more breakage and some thinning around the crown and throughout the ends.

One of the biggest changes I made was becoming gentler with my hair. I no longer use the hottest setting on my blow dryer or curling tools because I realized I was creating unnecessary dryness and damage. Warm heat is enough, so remember to change the settings on your tools! So, when I curl my hair, I keep the heat on the medium setting and hold the curling iron around my hair for less time. I always curl my hair in one-inch sections away from my face for softer, more flattering waves.

It’s important to stimulate the scalp and hair follicles to create an environment for optimal hair growth. I love using a scalp massager, especially in the shower while my conditioner or hair mask is sitting. I’ve also started using a micro-needling scalp roller before applying growth serums to help support circulation and absorption.

My overall favorite hair care line is Innersense. I’ve been using so many of their products for years and love that their formulations are extremely clean! Plus, the products always leave my hair looking its best. Their Hydrating Cream Hair Bath and Conditioner have become staples for me, and I also love the Hydrating Hair Mask when I need more moisture. I wash my hair twice a week, and use these most often. And since I have highlights, I also use their Bright Balance purple shampoo and conditioner every few weeks to prevent brassiness.

I still rotate other brands in because I enjoy trying new products, and there are some other great brands out there like Lolavie, Nécessaire, Jupiter, Isima, and Vegamour. Believe me when I say I’ve tried tons of hair care brands—most do not make the cut between the toxicity, scents, textures, and how my hair looks and feels when styled.

Before I blow-dry my hair, I focus on protection and repair. I usually use either K18 or the KYIR Active Bonding Serum Spray, depending on what my hair needs most. K18 has been especially helpful for strengthening my hair and keeping it in good shape. I also love KYIR because the formulas are very clean, lightweight, and smell great.

For styling, I also love using several Innersense products because they give softness and volume without stiffness. Their prep spray, styling cream, and root lifting products all work beautifully without making my hair crunchy or overly “done.” As for tools, I still love my Dyson Supersonic because it dries hair quickly without exposing it to excessive heat. And for beach waves, I use the T3 Curling Wand and the T3 Aire 360. You can see my beach wave tutorial HERE.

I’m also picky about dry shampoo because so many formulas spray on white and make my scalp feel dirty or weighed down. Right now, my favorites are from Amika and the Briogeo Style + Treat Dry Shampoo Puff, which is a great alternative to aerosol formulas and perfect for travel. For root touch-ups, I’ve been using Madison Reed (medium neutral brown) because it’s ammonia-free and much gentler than many traditional at-home color formulas. It gives you amazing gray coverage that lasts 3 weeks, so it really helps stretch the time between salon appointments.

Hormonal changes after menopause can really affect our hair in ways many of us don’t expect. Hair can become thinner, flatter, drier, and more fragile seemingly overnight. If thinning is bothering you and you want the most evidence-based topical option, I still think minoxidil is the gold standard. I personally use the Rogaine 5% foam at night because it’s easy to use and less messy than the liquid version. It’s definitely not the cleanest formula, which is why I also really love the KYIR Fuller Active Serum. It smells amazing, absorbs immediately, and doesn’t leave the scalp greasy or coated. I use this one in the morning. Neither makes my hair feel dirty or heavy.

I also believe hair health starts from the inside out. Lately, I’ve been using the Ancient + Brave collagen regularly, along with hair supplements like Wellbel or HUM Hair Strong Gummies. I like that the HUM gummies are low in sugar…two gummies contain only 3 grams.

The reality is that our hair changes as we age, but with the right routine and a little extra TLC, it can still look healthy, shiny, and full. It’s not always easy to see these changes when you’re used to having thicker, stronger hair, but aging is a privilege. And I truly believe that when we make small, consistent changes every day, we can continue to feel vibrant, confident, and look our very best at every age. There’s a version of mornings I used to have — rushed, reactive, reaching for my phone before my eyes were even fully open — and then there’s the version I’ve intentionally built for myself now.

After years of feeling frenetic and eventually hitting a wall, I realized I needed my mornings to feel grounded instead of drained. Giving myself this quiet “me time” before the world rushes in has become something I truly protect because it sets the tone for everything that follows.

The very first thing I do before getting out of bed is meditate. I use the Unplug App and do what I call a “bed-itation” — a term coined by one of my favorite meditation teachers, Davidji. Even five or ten minutes of stillness before checking messages or opening Instagram genuinely changes how I move through the rest of my day. It calms my nervous system and reminds me that the day starts with me, not my phone.

Then comes the ritual I look forward to every morning: my mushroom hot chocolate drink. I use Om Mushroom Superfood Blend, which is packed with adaptogens like Lion’s Mane for focus, Reishi for calm, Chaga for antioxidants, and Turkey Tail for immune support.

I stir in Ancient + Brave Collagen and Ancient + Brave Creatine — two supplements I consistently swear by, especially for women over 50. I also make a point to step outside every morning for fresh air and sunlight, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Morning light helps regulate your circadian rhythm, supports better sleep at night, boosts mood, and helps me feel more connected and energized before the workday begins.

Then comes breakfast. I don’t skip it anymore — especially as I’ve gotten older. Most mornings, I make two eggs over medium (and love using the toxic-free Our Place Always Pan) with a scoop of Good Culture Cottage Cheese. I also like to add fresh berries on the side. This breakfast gives me over 30 grams of protein first thing in the morning, which is foundational for muscle maintenance, energy, and blood sugar balance. I genuinely feel the difference on days I prioritize protein.

If I do both, it’s a big win! Movement is less about aesthetics for me now — it’s about longevity, mental clarity, mobility, strength, and feeling good in my body. By the time I sit down at my desk around 11:00, I feel clear, energized, and present instead of scrambling to catch up. There’s something deeply satisfying about starting work already having taken care of yourself first — your body, your mind, and your spirit — before opening a single email.

I think about what pro-aging really looks like in practice all the time. It’s the accumulation of small daily choices that quietly say: I value this body. I value this life. I’m going to take care of both. And for me, it all starts in the morning.

The beginning of my clean beauty journey wasn’t trend-driven—it was personal. In 2012, after relocating from New York to Los Angeles, my family and I moved into an older rental home. Not long after, I started getting sick—chronic sinus infections and severe allergies that eventually landed me in the hospital.

After seeing what felt like every MD specialist in town, I turned to an integrative medicine doctor to get to the root of what was going on. Bloodwork revealed something I hadn’t even considered: toxic mold and asbestos exposure in our home. My body was reacting in ways I couldn’t ignore—external and internal hives, inflammation, and difficulty breathing.

That experience changed the way I look at everything. It made me more aware of how much our environment impacts how we feel—not just what we breathe in, but what we put on our skin every day. I learned that what you put on your body is as important as what you put in your body. That realization became my turning point.

I didn’t overhaul everything overnight. I started small, swapping out a few products here and there, and over time became much more intentional about ingredients, formulations, and performance. I like using the Think Dirty app as a helpful resource to see how my products rate for toxicity, and have been surprised by how many of the ones I used for years didn’t meet clean standards.

Today, about 90% of my beauty cabinet is clean. At a minimum, I avoid parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, talc, and harsh sulfates. Clean beauty isn’t just about what you remove—it’s about choosing formulas that are both thoughtful and effective.

Let’s also remember that not all clean beauty is created equal. There’s still a lot of greenwashing in this space, and early on, I tried products that didn’t deliver. Thankfully, the level of innovation today is incredible, and I’ve found clean alternatives to almost every “cult favorite” I once relied on—many of them perform just as well, if not better. We use so many products across skincare, makeup, body care, and haircare, and that daily, cumulative exposure is something I am very mindful of. As we get older, hormone health also becomes more of a focus, and certain ingredients—like synthetic fragrance and phthalates—have been flagged as potential endocrine disruptors, which I choose to limit where I can. I also find that as skin matures, it often becomes more reactive, and simpler, cleaner formulations can make a noticeable difference.

I appreciate brands that are clear about their ingredients and sourcing—it creates a level of trust that feels important. The biggest shift of all is that performance is no longer a compromise. You truly don’t have to choose between clean and effective anymore. It’s not always about perfection—it’s about making better choices where you can. In the same way we think about what we eat or how we care for our homes, this becomes another extension of that mindset. Even a few thoughtful swaps can make a meaningful difference over time.

Last May, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Kyoto with my daughter, @rachel.leigh.meyers—and it was truly magical. We stayed at the Garrya Nijo Castle, a peaceful and beautifully designed hotel perfectly situated next to one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Kyoto is a city of contrasts—serene yet vibrant, deeply traditional yet full of surprises. We wandered through the Bamboo Forest in Arashiyama, including the monkey park, took in the beauty of Tenryu-ji Temple, and climbed the iconic path of torii gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine. One of our favorite moments was dressing in a kimono for a traditional tea ceremony at Maikoya—it was such a special and meaningful experience. We explored the historic charm of Gion, discovered the quiet magic of Kuramakibuecho, and snacked our way through Nishiki Market.

The food, of course, was a major highlight. Our meals included a mix of teppanyaki, ramen, wagyu, and some of the freshest sushi I’ve ever tasted. One of the most memorable meals was at Sushi Gion Matsudaya—an intimate, six-seat Michelin-starred sushi counter in the heart of Gion. We met some friends there who were also travelling at that time, and it was quite memorable because the grumpy chef kept us on our toes LOL. We also enjoyed the theatrical and smoky experience of Menbaka Fire Ramen, where the flaming bowl adds a fun and unforgettable twist to traditional ramen.

We made several stops at 7-Eleven during our stay—a must in Japan. It’s nothing like the ones in the U.S. From fluffy egg sandwiches (our fave) and perfectly seasoned onigiri to matcha mochi, seasonal lattes, and beautifully packaged skincare, the snacks alone are worth the visit. Japanese convenience stores are unexpectedly chic, super tasty, and a fun glimpse into everyday culture.

One of the highlights for us included a visit to the Nishiki Market, where we got our customized chopsticks and also cuddled adorable micro pigs while sipping lattes at the Mipig Café. We also found time for vintage shopping—Kindal was our favorite for cool, one-of-a-kind pieces. We picked up some incredible designer finds there from Chanel, Hermes, and Issey Miyake.

We also spent a few days in Osaka, but I’d recommend it as a fun and easy day trip. Highlights included visiting Osaka Castle, the food market, and strolling through the peaceful Nishinomaru Garden. I highly recommend using a tour guide to organize the day!

Last May, I fell in love with Tokyo—the city of endless surprises. From quiet temples and serene gardens to neon streets, designer boutiques, and world-class cuisine, every corner seemed to reveal something new. This is my curated guide to the neighborhoods, shopping, food, and experiences that made the trip so memorable. The vintage shopping is off the charts, so read until the end to get my fave spots!

I had the luxury of exploring the city with my dear friend Lisa Sheldon, and Tokyo quickly became one of those places that truly captivated us. Known for its incredible balance of tradition and innovation, it’s one of the most dynamic cities in the world, with an extraordinary food scene, cutting-edge design, and such a distinct sense of style. What struck me just as much, though, was how impeccably clean and organized everything feels, along with the calm, respectful energy that seems to define daily life. Even the subway bathrooms were a pleasure to use, with large bouquets outside and inside for us to enjoy.

The culture places such an emphasis on courtesy and mindfulness, and everyone we encountered felt gracious, polite, and genuinely welcoming. There’s an ease to the way the city operates that feels almost effortless, even with millions of people moving through it each day. Every street seemed to lead somewhere interesting, whether it was a tiny café tucked into an alley, a quiet garden hidden between buildings, or a beautifully designed shop that felt more like a gallery than a store.

One of the things that makes Tokyo so special is how different each neighborhood feels. Every area has its own personality, from the polished luxury of Ginza to the chic, design-forward streets of Aoyama, to the more traditional atmosphere around Sensō-ji in Asakusa. Some neighborhoods feel sleek and modern with incredible architecture and designer boutiques, while others feel quieter and more local, with small shops and hidden cafés tucked between the city streets. Exploring these different areas really became part of the experience, and each day felt completely different from the last.

We stayed at The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon, which I would absolutely recommend if you’re planning a visit. The hotel has a calm, minimalist feel that feels like a true retreat from the energy of the city, and the views of Tokyo Tower from above are especially beautiful at night when the skyline starts to glow.

One morning, we headed to Sensō-ji, Tokyo’s oldest temple, and walking through the approach lined with small shops and food stalls felt both vibrant and peaceful at the same time. The scent of incense and the sound of the temple created such a distinct atmosphere. One of the highlights of the trip was dressing up in traditional geisha kimonos and getting our hair done before the tea ceremony, then walking around Tokyo in full kimono for the rest of the day—it was such a fun way to see the city and feel completely immersed in the elegance of the moment, almost like stepping into a living Japanese fashion editorial. Nearby, the streets of Nishiasakusa felt quieter and more local, and we spent time wandering through kitchenware shops, admiring handmade ceramics and beautifully crafted pieces that felt both functional and special.

While we were there, we also participated in a traditional tea ceremony near the temple, which I highly recommend—it ended up being one of the most special moments of the trip. Sitting quietly and learning the ritual of preparing matcha felt like such a contrast to the energy of the city in the best possible way. We also explored some of Tokyo’s incredible museums, including the Tokyo National Museum, where you can see everything from samurai armor to delicate ceramics and sculptures that span centuries of history. Another afternoon we walked through the gardens surrounding the Tokyo Imperial Palace, which felt surprisingly serene given its location right in the center of the city.

Tokyo also offers some of the most iconic urban scenes in the world. We spent time in Shibuya, home to the famous crossing where everything somehow moves in perfect rhythm, and wandered through Harajuku, which is known for its creative street style and playful energy. Shinjuku felt completely different again, with its neon lights, towering buildings, and endless restaurants, each area offering its own version of the city.

Tokyo is also such an inspiring place for design, architecture, and shopping. In Aoyama, we walked past striking retail spaces and design studios, including the Prada flagship, which feels almost like a piece of modern art. Just nearby, the Nezu Museum and its gardens, designed by Kengo Kuma, offered a quieter, more reflective experience that stayed with me long after we left.

If you are a fashion lover, Tokyo is especially inspiring, particularly when it comes to Japanese denim. The level of craftsmanship is incredible, and brands like Momotaro, Pure Blue Japan, and Kapital create pieces that feel timeless and intentional. Shopping here feels more like discovering something special than simply buying something new, whether you’re in Harajuku, Ginza, or Aoyama.

And of course, the food in Tokyo is unforgettable. One of our most memorable meals was an elegant kaiseki dinner at Atago Daigo, where each course beautifully reflected the season. We also loved Jingumae Hanare, which felt intimate and tucked away, the kind of place you’re so happy to discover while traveling.

For more of a bucket-list experience, restaurants like Narisawa, known for its innovative, nature-inspired tasting menus, and Sukiyabashi Jiro, which is often booked through a hotel concierge, are among the most sought-after reservations in the city. Tofuya Ukai, located near Tokyo Tower, offers a more traditional experience in a beautiful garden setting that feels very special. We loved stopping into places like Cafe Kitsune in Aoyama, which felt like the perfect mix of fashion and café culture, and for those looking for more hard-to-book dining experiences, restaurants like Sushi Saito are often at the top of the list.

Tokyo is also one of those cities that makes you want to get dressed—polished but effortless, with just a bit of personality, and I found that a few well-chosen pieces worked perfectly from day to night. I’m turning 61 within the next week, and when I look in the mirror, I see wrinkles and imperfections that were not there even a year ago.

It doesn’t really bother me as much as I thought it would, and I feel like I’m at the point where I’m no longer interested in chasing the next miracle product, the loudest launch, or the promise of overnight transformation. I know what works best for aging gracefully, and that is maintenance over miracles. I truly believe it’s possible to keep your glow going strong for decades to come if you lead a fairly disciplined and clean lifestyle.

I do believe that not all skincare is created equal, and you can do a lot to improve your skin if you are consistent, use efficacious products, and stick to regular routines. I’ve been taking care of my skin and treating it with a lot of love over the years, and it shows. For me, it’s more about maintenance—and looking good for the age and stage I am at. I think yearly radio frequency and laser treatments, along with regular Botox injections, can definitely improve skin texture. However, there is no quick fix (well, maybe surgery) that will instantly take your skin back 20 years.

I personally think less is more when it comes to most things—whether it’s procedures, makeup, hair, or understated style. Finding your sweet spot and what makes you feel good in your own skin is the only right answer.

Consistency is the real luxury. If there’s one thing I know for sure after decades of testing, traveling, and living in my skin, it’s this: the glow doesn’t come from one specific treatment. It comes from showing up every day.

I went into menopause at 52. My last period was the day of my mom’s funeral, so it’s been almost eight years now that I’ve been fully post-menopausal. That moment marked the end of so many things at once, and the beginning of a chapter I didn’t yet understand.

Meditation, Gratitude, and Mental Hygiene

This has become just as important to me as movement and nutrition. Every morning, my husband and I do what we jokingly call our beditation (a short guided meditation right as we wake up) before scrolling, checking texts, and reading emails. It’s simple, grounding, and sets the tone for the day. At night, we listen to another meditation before falling asleep to help quiet the nervous system and gently transition into rest.

Along with meditation, I keep a gratitude journal. Nothing complicated. Some days it’s a few lines, other days just a sentence. But it’s trained my mind to look for what’s working instead of what’s missing—and that shift has been profound in this phase of life. Mental hygiene is real. Clearing mental clutter, calming the nervous system, and starting and ending the day intentionally have helped me feel steadier, more optimistic, and more present than I ever was before menopause.

Sleep changed after menopause, so now I have a nighttime routine. I dim the lights. I don’t glorify late nights anymore. I respect my circadian rhythm because everything feels harder when sleep is off. Good sleep makes my skin better, my workouts stronger, my mood kinder. It’s not indulgent—it’s foundational.

I Reconsidered Hormone Replacement Therapy (With Medical Guidance)

For a long time, I believed hormone replacement therapy wasn’t an option for me. I have the Factor V Leiden blood disorder, and I assumed that automatically ruled it out. About two years ago, after careful conversations and clearance from my hematologist, that assumption changed, and starting HRT has been a true game‑changer for me. I take estrogen and progesterone daily, and the impact has been significant. My energy improved. My sleep became more consistent. My mood stabilized. I felt more like myself again. I share this not to suggest that HRT is right for everyone—it’s deeply personal and absolutely something to navigate with trusted doctors. We don’t always have the full picture early on, and it’s worth revisiting old assumptions as our bodies and the science evolve.

I Choose Moments of Joy on Purpose

I build in beauty. Travel. Art classes. Little rituals. Afternoon pauses. Walks in nature. Bird watching. Celebration without justification. This chapter of life isn’t about proving anything. It’s about feeling good in my body, clear in my mind, and excited about what’s next. And that—more than anything—is what feeling your best post‑menopause really looks like.

Some moments give you pause.

Earlier this month, I was part of the 100 Women of Impact campaign with CaringKind, and I AM 100 Women of Impact, which has been featured on a billboard in Times Square since January 12—and will be up for a few more days.

The mission behind it: raising awareness around brain health, Alzheimer’s and dementia, and honoring the caregivers who so often do this work quietly and without recognition.

The shoot was photographed by Bell Soto, was thoughtful and intentional. There was a shared sense of responsibility among the women involved—each coming together with care, purpose, and a belief in the importance of community.

This campaign brings important issues into focus—inviting awareness, conversation, and compassion.

Why This Work Matters

This year, I’ve decided to move my writing to Substack and shift into something more personal, reflective, and responsive to what’s truly resonating right now. This space allows me to show up more intimately—to write from the heart, to explore ideas as they unfold, and to engage in real conversation with you.

This next chapter will be a place where I share lived-in lifestyle insights: holistic beauty from the inside out, wellness that performs, ageless style, and travel that feeds the soul.

For a long time, I believed growth came from adding strength, certainty, and striving for more. But the past year taught me something far more profound: real growth often comes from accepting, letting go, and simplifying. Not all at once. More quietly, layer by layer. As I step into 2026, it feels less like a fresh start and more like a threshold—one shaped by everything I’ve released and learned about resilience.

In the Chinese zodiac, we are closing out the Year of the Snake in early February and entering the Year of the Fire Horse. The symbolism feels especially fitting right now. The snake represents shedding—releasing an old skin to make space for renewal. It’s introspective, transformative, and often uncomfortable. What follows is the energy of the horse: movement, momentum, freedom, and expansion. Where the snake asks us to go inward, the horse invites us outward—into motion, experience, and possibility. The past few years have been so challenging, which is why I am really looking forward to the new energy of 2026!

As we close out the Year of the Snake, I wanted to share some of what this season asked me to shed:

• I shed taking the people I love for granted—especially after losing my mother in 2017. Life is fragile, and everything can change in an instant.

• I shed silence in my marriage, learning that honest, open communication is what truly strengthens a partnership.

• I shed my attachment to material things—especially after being burglarized twice. It was a stark reminder that safety, peace, and the people I love matter far more than anything I own.

• I shed a version of the dream that no longer fit, letting go of a beloved home (sold just weeks ago) to make space for more freedom, travel, and possibility.

• I shed the belief that tough love is always the answer, choosing presence and softness instead—especially as a mother.

• I shed the habit of pushing through at all costs, learning instead to honor my nervous system, slow down, ask for support, and build sustainable resilience. This meant seeking the mental health support I needed to face long-held anxieties and fears—something I’ll share more about in a future post.
  

As we enter this new year, I’m embracing reinvention by refining whatever comes next. Choosing what stays, what goes, and what deserves my energy. Living lighter, more aligned, and more open to what’s possible. Meeting the world with curiosity and optimism—through travel, learning, connection, and presence. This year feels like an opening, not just for me, but for anyone willing to release what no longer fits. I would be thrilled if you joined me here and continued this journey with me.
