Not proof that you are working hard enough. Not the price of success.

An addiction.

Because it feels like fuel. It feels like momentum. It feels like you are finally doing enough. And that feeling becomes the thing you chase without even knowing you are chasing it.

And like every addiction, it will never once feel like fulfillment, joy, peace, or meaningful impact. It does not know those words. It was never built for them.

Does this sound familiar? You’re: Always on. Always busy. Always late. Always the one who handles it all. Always over-functioning.

You see, your body does not know the difference between a deadline and a saber tooth tiger at the cave door. It responds the same way every time.

What starts as a natural and important surge of Cortisol, becomes a level-4 white water rapid you didn’t sign up to navigate.

Every. Single. Day.

And that rapid feeds fiercely on everything that actually matters.

Your life force.

When that cortisol rapid runs long enough (decades for some of us) your central nervous system pays the price.

It stops knowing how to regulate. It stays on high alert even when there is nothing left to fight.

That is when self-care stops being a luxury and becomes the only reset that actually works.

Here is what I learned about the endless striving to arrive at some fictional destination called success, the very long and hard and stubborn way.

You will never get there.

Not because you are not good enough.

Because ‘worthy’ was never waiting at the finish line.

Drumroll. ‘Worthy’ is where we must start.

Who else is guilty of spending years putting fulfillment, happiness, peace, maybe even fun, on hold until we earn the right to them?

Until we achieve enough, prove enough, finally feel like we deserve them.

That is not ambition.

That is a nervous system running on a story that was never true.

A belief whose only job is to remind you it is still there.

The only person who can interrupt this pattern is you.

Not a different job, a better title, or more money.

Not one more achievement.

Not family, partners, or even mentors.

Not hope.

And definitely not time.

Only you.

And that requires one thing before anything else.

Permission.

The radical, intentional decision to stop chasing worthiness through everything outside yourself and start with the only place it has ever actually lived.

I am seeing this so clearly lately. Friends and family, clients, amazing people I follow. All of us carrying the same pattern, just in different costumes.

This is not a personal failing. It is a generational inheritance. And we are paying the price of over-functioning without the counterweight of genuine self-care. (And I do not mean bubble baths).

I mean the hard daily choice to ask yourself one honest question.

“Do I give myself permission to love myself today or am I putting that on hold until I arrive somewhere I have never actually defined?”

That question saved my life.

What came back first was clarity. Then confidence.

The imposter bully got quieter.

Decisions that used to spiral started landing faster and cleaner.

I finally got honest about what I actually want and need to feel happy, joyful, and fulfilled. Not what I thought I was supposed to want.

And when I stopped negotiating with myself about my health and vitality, everything changed. I made it a non-negotiable habit to build a new standard in my life.

Now at 56 I am healthy, strong, and more in my body than I have ever been.

And the way I serve changed completely.

I stopped achieving through serving and started serving from a place that actually fills me up instead of draining me dry.

What is on the other side of it is a level of fulfillment that fuels you very differently.

Subscribe

If this activated something inside you, let’s talk. You do not have to figure out how to get there alone.

The Leadership Impact Audit is a complimentary 60-minute powerful conversation, just you and me.

You bring a real situation, a decision, a team dynamic, a conversation that keeps taking up mental space.

Together, we identify what is actually getting in the way.

You leave with a clearer view of what has been limiting your momentum, language for what has been hard to name, and two or three practical next steps you can use right away.

I invite you to book your power hour HERE:

Do you know someone who will benefit from this article? And then they go back to managing their words, their strategy, their team structure, their systems, as if energy is a side effect of those things instead of the driver underneath all of them.

It is not a side effect. It is the source.

What your knee-jerk reaction is telling you

Think about the last time you walked into a meeting where two leaders were competing, where there was tension nobody was naming out loud. What was your first instinct?

Mine is to balance. Fix it. Crack a joke. Pull it together.

That instinct is not a personality quirk. It is data. It is your default energy pattern operating before your conscious mind gets a vote. And whatever it is for you, it is also what your team sees before you say a word.

That is energy leadership in practice. Not a concept. Not woo. The actual invisible driver behind whether your message lands, whether your team moves, whether your leadership creates momentum or costs you more than it returns.

The only question that matters

When something hits you, and something always hits you, you take it in, process it through your default lens, and send it back out. Most leaders never examine the lens.

The goal is not to eliminate the reaction. The goal is to get in front of it so you can choose the response instead of defaulting to the one your nervous system learned twenty years ago under completely different circumstances.

Doing more is not the answer. It is an overachiever’s dream. Add hours, add output, add effort. It works until it does not, and when it stops working it takes your health, your relationships, and eventually your results with it.

The shift is not more. The shift is different.

What becomes possible

When you shift your energy, you shift your entire impact. Not eventually. Instantly.

The more aware you become of the lens you are leading through, the more conscious choice you have in any given moment. And conscious choice is the beginning of actual authority.

If this is the work you are ready to do, I would love to be in that conversation with you.

If this resonates and you want to explore more, let’s talk.

How often do you get a space with no judgment, and no one projecting their solutions onto you?

The Leadership Impact Audit is a 60-minute conversation, just you and me. And the first place a leader loses it is in the one relationship that is easiest to sideline (the one with ourselves).

The formula you inherited

Most of us are working on a hand-me-down success formula. Mine went something like:

Achieve => Get Recognized => Feel Good => Repeat.

It works, right up until recognition goes on hiatus, and eventually we realize we built our entire sense of self on something beyond our control. What I refer to as the Achievement Trap.

Most high performers try to rebuild self-trust by pushing through and achieving more. Another title. Another win. Another payout.

But achievement was never what drained us, so more of it will never replenish us.

In hindsight, this is clear and simple.

But in life, without the gift of hindsight, it is neither clear nor simple.

It can be devastating.

Here is what I have come to believe about self-trust

Self-trust is not confidence and it is not a feeling.

It is a relationship you build with yourself, one kept promise at a time.

You tell yourself you will do a small thing, and you do it. Then a slightly bigger thing. That is how the relationship comes back, and it is also how your energy comes back online. That is how you start a disciplined practice of self-care.

And your best asset running underneath all of it, is your energy.

When you stop refilling it, the signs are familiar. Self-doubt. Over-functioning. Micromanaging. Feeling like an imposter even after everything you have already proven.

I sat down with Jill Kane for her very first live, two former corporate HR leaders talking about the part of leadership no one trained us for. of Celsius.

First, the backstory:

I’m a 56-year-old Leadership and Business Coach who spent 25 years around the HR and Technology Strategy tables for Fortune 100 ‘s. I have given keynotes. I have led global powerhouse teams. I have built incredible organizations. I have walked into rooms and thought I owned them.

And…I have stumbled, failed, and returned to recreate the scene of my crime until, eventually, I knew I couldn’t return to the cycles of doing without some shift in who I was being.

Enter 2022: this was when my biggest identity shift (the one the universe had been patiently waiting for me to embody for maybe 2 or more decades) finally took hold. If any readers are thinking “been there or whoa, I am there”… just know we are all exactly where we are supposed to be, and it is ok!

My fortune cookie wisdom is that life lessons just take the time they take.

Now, following the lead of an amazing mentor, every morning, in my pajamas, with my chihuahua on my lap (faithfully supporting me with a cuddle and an extended nap after his long night’s sleep:-)), I do a journaling exercise called "Future Memories + Desires."

You write what you want to feel, what you want to do, what you want to have. You write it like it’s already real. Very woo. Very necessary. Don’t @ me.:-)

I’ve been doing it for over a year.

It keeps getting more honest.

Today it went somewhere I didn’t expect and I feel compelled to share it.

PERMISSION to own my sh!t.

Melissa, I give you permission to stop waiting for a sign.

I want to feel like I fit, contribute, laugh, play, work, grow old, and grow UP with a community of like-minded, professional, joy-filled, powerhouse women.

I know I can no longer survive/thrive/progress without them.

I am making it okay to say “I just can’t.” (And then I crossed that out.)

I CAN. My search, not on the sidelines, but by changing who I am being. I can courageously join the rooms, the experiences, the communities, and the conversations where my TRIBE might be.

It is ok to not know, and it is ok if I don’t find them at first.

I do not have to be sure.

I do not have to be ready.

I do not have to be all put together.

I am done wallowing in my own indecision. I’m done waiting for an invite.

I am done waiting for my internal signal that I am no longer ‘needy’.

Side note: I am wondering why and when I decided that “needing people, when I actually need them” is a weakness? But I feel in my core that I can let this nuisance pressure point go. It is debilitating noise. (I might have just learned what being vulnerable actually means:-)).

I am ready to push through that discomfort and trust the process.

No one is responsible for my joy, my happiness, my engagement in my own life, my success, my spirituality, or for helping heal those wounds from long ago. The rescuer, healer, and action figure is me, only me.

But that doesn’t mean I have to do it alone; I just have to stop carrying it everywhere I go. I will MOVE forward today.

If you are feeling this, subscribe. Convinced that needing people was a liability, an unsafe place, unless I had something value-added to give back.

Somewhere along the way, I learned that showing up without a gift is bad.

But who defines what the gift is? And why am I still buying into a 50+-year-old talk track?

I spent a million seconds of my lifetime actively proving that just being me was definitely not enough of a gift.

I convinced my entire nervous system that wanting a tribe, actual, real, show-up-for-each-other people, was somehow bad, soft, weak … ‘needy'. Dare I say with a ridiculous accent, “It is unbecoming of my credentials.”

That now deserves a “WTF”!

A “Boop”.

It is Wrong.

I built a whole career on not being personal. Personal was messy.

Turns out ‘the personal’ was and IS EXACTLY what is needed.

Not to manipulate, not to get a pass, not to prove myself, but to connect, share energy, grow as a human, and learn to trust yourself.

To belong to.

And here’s the thing I just realized while writing this post. Like, just now.

I wasn’t waiting to be ready.

Ready is a skill problem. You practice, you prepare, you go.

This was something else entirely.

I spent 25 years learning that needing people when I actually needed them was a liability.

That’s the whole enchilada.

That pattern ran me for a long time.

Now I know it’s mine to fill. Not anyone else’s gift that I am lacking. Not the next career move’s job. Some pieces teach. Some pieces tell the story. All of it is the work.

I was hired to build something that actually mattered.

Fortune 50 company. Massive new strategy. They brought me in to transform how the whole operation ran from the inside. HR and technology shared services at scale. I had done it before at other companies. I knew how to make it work.

I believed in what we were building.

And I watched it come apart anyway.

The strategy was excellent. The people were some of the most talented I had ever worked alongside. The resources were there.

What was missing was this: the whole change was designed around process and not people. Nobody stopped to ask what was actually happening inside the organization. Nobody measured what the leaders were carrying. Nobody named what was growing underneath the very reasonable slides about transformation, optimization, and synergy.

The leaders who spoke up got sidelined. The ones who made it through kept their heads down and stopped pushing. And the culture that grew in that space was not the one anyone designed. It was the one that filled the vacuum when nobody was willing to own it.

I was one of those people for longer than I want to admit.

That is the part I do not hear other leaders talk about. Not the toxic culture they witnessed. The version of themselves they became while they were surviving it.

I learned to manage around the dysfunction instead of addressing it. I got good at reading the room and saying the right things at the right time. I called it being strategic.

It was not strategic. It was an adaptation. And adaptation has a cost that eventually comes due.

Years were lost. Real talent walked out. Bold leadership got punished and replaced by compliance. The people who survived did it by going quiet.

Nobody won. Not the company. Not the leaders. Not the people who stayed. Not the ones who left.

And here is the thing I have carried into every room I have walked into since.

God does not waste pain. None of that was wasted on me.

What I learned in that company, and in every organization I led before and after it, is the foundation of everything I now know about culture. About energy. About what actually drives the gap between the culture a leader intends to build and the one she actually creates.

Culture does not wait for the leader to show up. It is already in session.

Subscribe now

The Part Nobody Is Saying Out Loud

Culture is built every day. In every decision that goes unexplained. Every expectation that goes unnamed. Every behavior that gets a pass because addressing it feels like too much right now.

It lives in your organization. Your team. Your home. The energy your kids absorb at the dinner table before anyone says a word. The standard your partner learns to expect because of what you enforce and what you let slide. The unspoken rules that govern every relationship you lead.

This is as true for the founder leading a company of five as it is for the SVP leading five hundred. The size of the organization changes nothing about the mechanism.

If you are not defining it, embodying it, and building real accountability around it, someone else is building it for you. The person with the most unchecked energy in the room. The loudest voice. The longest tenure. The deepest unaddressed fear. Whoever shows up with the most force in the absence of intentional leadership fills that space.

Your culture belongs to your mission. Or it belongs to whoever filled the vacuum while you were heads down delivering results and hoping it would sort itself out.

And let me be direct about what that means. It does not mean rolling out another initiative. It does not mean a values refresh or a town hall or a culture committee. It means deciding, fully and without reservation, that the culture in the rooms you lead is yours to design. Not someday. Now. That decision is the whole thing.

Busy is not a culture strategy. And hoping the energy in the room improves on its own is not leadership. It is tolerance dressed up as patience.

Here is the part almost nobody says out loud.

The toxic culture you are sitting in right now did not build itself. Someone created it. Or someone tolerated it long enough for it to take root. And in most cases, that someone had every intention of building something great. They just could not see what they were carrying underneath their intention.

A visibility problem. Not a character flaw. And it is fixable. Not with a new policy. Not with a values refresh. Not with a team-building day that everyone forgets by Thursday. Only with the leader going first.

I held both seats for 25 years. The executive chair and the HR strategic partner chair across Fortune 100 companies and fast-scaling organizations. From both of those seats, I watched the same pattern repeat.

A leader who knew exactly what the culture should be. Who had it documented, presented, and cascaded. Who genuinely cared.

And whose team was building something completely different in the hallways, in the Slack channels, and in the energy of every meeting where she was not in the room.

The gap was never strategy. It was something nobody in that room had language for yet.

What that leader was carrying underneath her intention, the frequency she was actually running when the stakes were high, and the pressure was real, was the culture her team was mirroring. Her team was not learning from her values deck. They were reading her nervous system.

A few weeks ago, I was listening to an episode of Made for More, a podcast hosted by my pastor, Todd Mullins. His guest was Shaun Nepstad, a culture coach who works with executives in Silicon Valley. The episode is called Don’t Quit in the Dip and it is worth your time.

Nepstad said something I have been obsessed with over the past week.

“Culture is anything you create or tolerate. There is not one thing in our companies, our families, our churches, that we are not responsible for. Because we either created it or we are tolerating it.”

— Shaun Nepstad | Made for More Podcast | Don’t Quit in the Dip

That hit me differently than anything I have heard in decades of leading culture change or coaching teams and leaders.

Perhaps it is the simple truth of it.

But it removed every excuse. Including mine.

“The most powerful person in any organization is not the person who carries the highest title. It is the one who controls the feel.”

— Shaun Nepstad

The feel. Not the strategy. Not the org chart. The feel!

The feel is controlled by the energetic patterns running the leader. Her default. The one that kicks in when something goes sideways at 3 pm on a Thursday, when she has three more meetings, and her team is watching her every move.

That pattern is the culture. Whether she knows it or not.

Toxic culture is not mysterious. It is not random. It is the energy of an unaddressed pattern that nobody with real authority was willing to own. Nepstad named it precisely.

Toxic culture is never satisfied in the backseat. It always reaches for the steering wheel. It feeds on the vacuum. It wants to crash.

The only thing that stops it is a leader who decides to drive intentionally. Who sees her own pattern clearly enough to choose something different.

Here Is What Is Actually In The Way

The woman I am writing for is not weak or failing. She is one of the most capable leaders in any room she walks into, and she knows it.

But she has a default pattern running underneath her capability that she cannot see when inside it.

Here is what drives the avoidance. In myself and in every leader I have coached across two and a half decades.

Fear.

She knows the conversation she needs to have. The standard she needs to enforce. The pattern she needs to name. And something underneath the knowing stops her. She calls it timing. She calls it strategy. It is fear. Fear of getting it wrong. Fear that claiming the authority will cost her something she is not ready to lose.

Insecurity.

And underneath the fear, if she is honest, is this. Some part of her is still waiting to be found out. She was promoted into this role or built this company, and the imposter has never fully left the building. Enforcing the standard requires her to fully claim the seat. Owning the culture means owning the authority. She has not done that all the way yet. Most leaders never do.

Borrowed power.

Here is the one nobody talks about because it is the hardest to see when you’re inside it. She built her influence on delivering results and being what every room needed. She is exceptional at it. And she is leading from a version of herself built to survive the organization rather than lead it. That version has an expiration date. Borrowed power works brilliantly until the moment it stops working. And when it stops, there is nothing underneath it. Nothing. That is the moment everything starts to cost more than it returns.

Overwhelm.

And so she puts it on next quarter’s list. Again. She has seventeen priorities, and the culture conversation keeps getting bumped. The urgent has been eating the important for so long that she cannot find the important anymore. And the culture keeps building itself in the meantime. With or without her.

I have embodied every single one of these. Not in theory, but in real time, in real organizations, with real teams watching. And honestly, in relationships, too, with real love on the line.

The culture she tolerates within herself is the culture she creates outside herself. Every single day. Whether she knows it or not.

This Is Not Soft Work. This Is Science.

Here is what the science confirms and what I have watched play out in too many of the organizations I have led or coached.

Your team is not responding to your strategy. They are not responding to your words. They are mirroring the energy you walk in with, broadcasting it before the meeting starts.

When you walk in grounded and regulated, they relax into trust. When you walk in running on borrowed power and performing fine, they brace. Every time. Before you say a single word.

Energy is tangible. Energy is contagious. Presence is power. And people feel you before they hear you.

93% of communication is nonverbal. Your team reads you in the first thirty seconds of every room you enter. UCLA research, validated by Harvard Business Review.

It is the same at home. Your kids are reading your nervous system at the dinner table. Your partner is calibrating to your energy before you open your mouth. The sales team mirrors whatever state the leader walks in carrying before the standup begins.

This is not soft ‘woo’ work. It is science. It is energy intelligence. And it means culture change has to start in the one place most culture strategies never go.

Inside the leader.

Here Is What I Have Learned It Actually Takes

Inside the leader is where it starts. And then it has to travel.

From your head, where you get honest about what you actually want the culture to be and why it matters, into your body, where you embody it before you ask anyone else to live it, and then into the room. The team. The family. The relationships you lead every single day.

That journey is where most leaders lose it.

I have watched this breakdown more times than I can count. A leader who has the culture completely clear in her mind. Who knows exactly how she wants the team to operate, what the standards are, what the non-negotiables are? And whose team is operating under a completely different set of unwritten rules because she never translated what was in her head into something they could actually carry out.

A culture that lives only in the leader’s head becomes a gap in every room she walks into.

I have been that leader.

I thought because I knew it, they knew it. I thought because it was obvious to me, it was obvious to the room. It was not. What was obvious to them was the energy I walked in with. The pattern running underneath me. And that became the real culture, whether I had articulated anything or not.

Here is what I have learned it actually takes.

The leaders who build cultures that perform, retain talent, and scale without fracturing get precise. Not values on a wall. Specific behaviors. Specific expectations. Specific non-negotiables communicated so clearly that every person on the team knows exactly what they look like on a real Tuesday. Ambiguity drains everyone. Clarity is the gift.

They embody it before they ask anyone else to live it. The founder is the culture of her company. The leader is the culture of her team. You cannot ask your people to hold a standard you have not yet fully claimed for yourself.

They build accountability that actually holds. Not fear-based performance management dressed up as culture work. The kind rooted in shared mission and mutual respect, where people hold each other to the standard because they believe in what they are building together. That kind of accountability does not need to be enforced. It lives in the room.

I knew all of this intellectually for years. And something was still not where it needed to be.

The Pattern That Is Running Your Culture Without Your Permission

Here is what I finally understood after two and a half decades of leading from both seats.

Every single one of those four things requires the leader to operate from her actual authority. Not the version of herself she built to survive the organization. Not the leadership style she mastered because it worked in rooms that rewarded a certain kind of performance. Her actual authority. The one that lives underneath the adaptation.

Most leaders have never seen that clearly enough to lead from it. Including me.

Unconscious leadership is not a character flaw. It is what happens when nobody ever shows you the pattern you are running. When the rooms around you keep reflecting something back, and you keep looking everywhere except inside yourself for the source.

I had the strategy. I had the conviction. I genuinely cared about the people I was leading. And I was running a pattern beneath all of it that I could not see from inside. My team could feel it. My culture reflected it back to me every day. And I kept trying to fix the outside, even though the source was entirely inside me.

When I finally saw that pattern clearly, everything that had felt confusing about my team, my decisions, my results, and, honestly, my exhaustion, suddenly made complete sense.

There is a specific diagnostic I use in my work that reveals the exact pattern a leader reaches for before her brain has a chance to override it. The one her team has been responding to for years, without either of them having the language to describe what was actually driving the dynamic.

When you see it, the culture gaps that felt systemic become personal, and therefore fixable.

The team dynamics that felt like a people problem become a pattern problem, and therefore are addressable.

The standard you have been trying to enforce from the outside finally has a foundation on the inside.

Awareness first. Radical accountability second. Intentional action third.

In that order. Always.

That sequence changes culture at the root. Not at the surface. Not in the next offsite or the next values refresh, or goal setting. At the source.

Twenty-five years. Fortune 100 boardrooms, HR strategy tables, technology transformations, and more leadership postmortems than I care to count. I have sat in the seat of the executive who could not see her own pattern. I have sat across the table from that leader as her HR partner. I have been the one who went quiet when I should have gone direct. And I have been the one who finally stopped.

Stopping is where the real work begins.

She stops tolerating inside herself what she has been trying to fix outside herself. That is where culture actually changes and inner-authority is built.

Here is what I know about the women who made it to this moment.

They are not wondering if this applies to them.

They are wondering what to do first.

I want to know where you are. Drop it in the comments because I will read them.

This is only the beginning of where this goes.

~Melissa~

PS. Before I let you go, I want to tell you what is coming on April 30th.

I am opening a live intensive for powerhouse leaders and founders who are done tolerating their culture gap and ready to close it. And before we meet, you will complete a 20-minute diagnostic that does something no other leadership assessment has ever done for you.

Most assessments measure who you have been. This one measures how you are actually showing up right now. The attitudes, the unconscious beliefs, the stories built from decades of experience that are running your leadership on autopilot across every area of your life, not just at work.

Because how you do anything is how you do everything.

The way you lead your team is the way you lead your family, your relationships, and yourself. The pattern does not clock out at 5pm. It travels with you into every room you walk into. And until you can see it clearly, you cannot consciously choose something different.

It shows you the exact leadership style you reach for before your brain has a chance to weigh in.

Your default on an ordinary Tuesday.

Your default when the pressure hits, the room goes quiet, and everyone is watching.

Your default in conflict.

Your default is when you are stretched thin and running on borrowed energy.

Most leaders have two versions of themselves.

The one they show the world. And the one that shows up uninvited under stress. The gap between those two versions is where culture breaks down, influence leaks, and teams start mirroring back something you never intended to create.

This diagnostic maps all of it.

The seven distinct leadership styles available to you.

How you move between them throughout your day.

Which ones serve you and which ones are running on autopilot at a cost you cannot yet see.

The frequency with which your team has been mirroring, without either of you having language for what was actually happening.

It is not a label or a personality type. It is a living map of how you actually show up, and because it measures attitudes, not personality, what you see is changeable. Starting tomorrow.

Learn the patterns that have been running your team, your culture, and your rooms without your permission. For the first time, you will see it clearly enough to own it.

Your data. Your pattern. Your path forward.

We spend three hours together as a group taking that data somewhere. Going deep into your results, understanding the leadership styles driving your team dynamics, and building a practical framework to shift how you show up in the rooms that matter most.

You will leave knowing exactly what you have been broadcasting in every room, why your culture looks the way it does, and what to do differently on Monday morning.

That is the most practical and strategic leadership move you will make all year.

If April 30th is calling your name, stay close.

Subscribe now

PPS. She wrote about me as if I were a full, interesting, wonderful human being.

When I read it, I thought: That sounds like a great person.

And then immediately: I wonder if I’m actually her.

I was 42 years old. I had traveled the world, climbed every ladder I could find. And it took someone else’s voice to connect me to myself on that page.

Of course, at the time, I dismissed that as a personality trait and moved on. (Yep, another limiting belief I became a victim to.)

But I had been trained out of thinking about myself like that. Not subtly. Explicitly.

In 1981, I had a middle school counselor who sat me down and told me three things I remember like it was yesterday: Don’t major in MOM. Don’t be a nurse. Don’t be a K-12 educator.

I mean, seriously?

Motherhood, nursing, and teaching are three of the most important roles in the world, and I was told to treat them as limitations.

Even worse, at 12 years old, my ambitious self soaked it up. Not only did I buy into it, I learned how to embody it. I built myself around that belief for decades.

Vulnerability was weakness.

Softness was a liability.

Man, that cost me.

The voices that mattered did not include mine.

It was the ones already proven to work, and at the time, those were masculine voices. The ones that proved you could hang with the men.

So I studied and mastered those voices and learned how and when to wear those masks. They were NOT mine, NOT authentic, NOT feminine, NOT vulnerable. But they worked. And I thanked God, because familiar and effective felt like enough.

My mother used to say I was a great number two.

She meant it as a compliment. She saw the way I caught fire supporting someone else’s vision, the way I could walk into any room and immediately understand what it needed. But what I heard underneath it, what I carried for decades without examining, was this:

you will blow it up if you’re in charge.

you always do.

stay behind someone else. it’s safer there.

And I believed it. I ambitiously collected all the evidence to prove it. Energy flows where focus goes. I trained my mind to believe it and only see that, not the bigger truth.

So I became an extraordinary number two.

I called that success. And honestly, it was, partly. But it was also a very elegant way of never having to fully claim or even get to know my own power.

There was always someone else’s vision to stand behind.

Always an existing structure to perform inside of.

Always a room to read instead of a self to know.

* * *

THE CALL | In Which I Am Briefly, Genuinely, In Love With Myself

The next day, my boss and I flew to LA to see a major client, and on that trip, everything shifted.

My boss told me he was bringing me because my resume would knock their socks off, build confidence, and frankly, we needed that win. And in that magical setup, BOOM... I felt it all come back online.

That thing I could do when the conditions were right. I walked into that meeting like I owned the floor.

Here is what was also true: I was never the impostor I believed myself to be. I had a genuinely extraordinary mind for this work. I could see what people actually needed.

Not what the tech team wanted to build.

Not what HR wanted to deliver.

Not what the brand wanted to project.

What the actual human beings on the other end of all those systems and processes were experiencing.

I could hold the whole board in my head, speak every language in the room, and make it make sense. That was real. All of it.

I mean, this is the same kid who, at five years old, jumped on her mother’s stage in New York City when an artist was late, stood in front of a late-night crowd, and performed. Apparently, I sang, I talked, I was creative, and I entertained fearlessly. (God only knows what I actually did up there.)

I was myself. Filled with joy. Not afraid of the room, not afraid of being seen.

That girl knew exactly who she was.

Maybe you had that version of yourself too. Before the world told you to dial it back.

But at some point, she stopped owning it, stopped believing it mattered, and learned to mirror others instead. I borrowed power instead of claiming it.

Borrowed power has an expiration date.

In 2012, at 42, I knew I nailed that meeting. My boss knew it. The client was in.

Bold Melissa was in the house!

This is the part nobody tells you about leading from borrowed power.

It works. Brilliantly, sometimes. The results are real. The influence is real. The rooms you command are real.

But one runs on you. The other runs on who you’ve convinced them you are.

And you cannot sustain the second one forever.

The body keeps the score even when the mind keeps performing.

* * *

THE TREADMILL | It’s Hard to Self-Generate Validation

That night, the client took us to dinner. Several $300 bottles of wine. Big dinner. Big personalities at the table. Everyone leaning in.

I was ‘ON’... it was (sometimes still is) the way I get when the energy of a room gives me something to work with; something to respond to; an energetic charge to anchor myself to.

Magnetic. Fully alive. The energy in that room was mine, and I knew it.

Later, after the dinner, I did what I often did at the end of a night like that. I found a way to extend it. Anything to keep the feeling going a little longer, to avoid the hotel room where I would be alone with the quiet and my actual voice.

I couldn’t self-generate the validation I was addicted to.

I remember saying that to myself like it was a quirk, an unchangeable personality trait, and not a five-alarm warning.

“It’s hard to self-generate validation because it was externally generated!”

As if that was just a thing about me. As if that wasn’t the entire problem sitting right there in plain sight.

I needed the room.

I needed the mirror.

I needed someone else to confirm I was real.

And I was so good at finding that confirmation, so skilled at creating the conditions for it, that I never once had to stop and ask what it meant that I needed it at all.

The tank would be empty again by morning. And I would start all over.

And I would do it again tomorrow.

And the day after that.

And the year after that.

Here’s the thing about catabolic energy, and I mean that in the most literal, physics-based sense: it feeds on itself.

The more I burned, the more I needed to burn just to feel anything.

Anxiety generates more anxiety.

Proving generates more proving.

The treadmill speeds up. You run faster just to stay in place, and at some point you cannot even remember why you got on.

My 40s were a decade of that treadmill.

High-powered jobs.

Relationships that burned fast.

I was always arriving somewhere new, being amazing, and then slowly, inevitably, the performance would start to cost more than I had.

I could feel the terror coming. I would either push harder or leave before anyone could see it. I was really good at leaving before anyone could see it.

Wherever you go, there you are.

I thought that was just something people put on motivational posters. Turns out it was a warning. (It might as well have had my name on it.)

* * *

THE THRESHOLD | When the Borrowed Power Runs Out

By 2016, my voice had gotten so small I could barely hear it myself.

I couldn’t tell stories anymore. Not real ones.

I could perform stories, the polished versions, the ones that made people laugh or lean in.

But the actual telling, the kind where you let someone see inside the moment? I had completely lost access to that.

Gone. Like a frequency I could no longer tune into.

The rooms stopped working. The mirror cracked. And I had built my entire sense of self on the reflection it gave me, so when it stopped working, I had nothing underneath it.

Nothing.

I went very dark that year.

The kind of dark where you stop being able to imagine forward.

Where the exhaustion goes so deep it stops feeling like exhaustion and starts feeling like the truth about who you are.

Where you have been performing FINE for so long that FINE becomes the most dishonest word in the English language, and you are so tired of saying it.

I got help. Finally.

It took everything I had, because asking for help meant admitting the armor wasn’t working, and I had never let anyone see that. Not really. Not all the way down.

I hired a coach, someone who worked on transitions and the kind of inner work I had been avoiding for decades.

What I found on the other side of that year wasn’t a breakthrough. That took longer.

But I found enough ground to stand on.

Enough room to breathe. Enough to get back up.

Enough to step back onto the treadmill, because the treadmill was the only life I knew how to run.

What I didn’t know yet was that the problem had never been the job, the city, or the company. It was the voice I’d been building since I was a little girl.

Room by room.

Performance by performance.

Built entirely out of other people’s expectations of who I should be.

A voice like that will carry you a very long way.

It just won’t carry you home.

I know, because I tried.

* * *

THE PART WHERE I TURN IT AROUND ON YOU

Telling is performance. Sharing is presence. And … I spent enough years confusing the two.

Maybe your version of this looks nothing like mine.

Maybe your treadmill looks like a perfect career and a life that checks every box and a creeping feeling on Sunday nights that you cannot name.

Maybe it looks like being the most competent person in every room and the loneliest person at every dinner table.

Maybe it looks like having a voice that lands everywhere except inside your own chest.

The shape doesn’t matter. The exhaustion is the same.

What I know now is this.

The energy you spend performing a version of yourself is energy you are not spending being yourself.

That’s not a metaphor either; it is also physics.

Energy spent in one direction is not available in another. And when all of yours goes into the performance, you have nothing left for the actual life.

The woman who faked that coughing fit in 2012 had power she didn’t believe she was allowed to own.

She wasn’t an impostor. She just believed the people who told her she was.

She ran on that lie for four decades. Brilliant and exhausted. Commanding every room she walked into and feeling nothing when she left.

Yep, that WAS me. But now?

My Midlife isn’t a crisis. It’s a freedom call. Powered by diminishing f*cks given and the audacity to finally go after what you actually want.

I’m not tallying up the past to make peace with it.

I’m here because the voice I almost left behind was the most powerful thing about me.

Reclaiming it wasn’t optional. It was the whole point.

Is the voice you’ve been leading with actually yours?

Not your title. Not your track record. Not the version of you that lands in rooms.

The one underneath all of that. The one that existed before you learned which version of you was safe to show.

I am committed to continuing to connect to mine. Every day.

And that, for the record, is the most powerful thing I have ever committed to doing.

If that question is sitting in your chest right now, that’s not an accident.

Where in your life are you realizing the voice you’ve been leading with might not actually be yours?

Drop a comment or send me a message. It opened something I often contemplate but don’t always remember to apply in real time :-).

Honestly, sometimes this whole thing feels elusive.
I’m literally retraining fifty years of operating patterns and peeling off belief lenses I didn’t even know I was wearing.

What I keep noticing is this.
A lot of long-term transformation work, at least for me, has been about evolving the urge to outrun myself.

I’ve been in this ongoing conversation with God about speed for a long time now.
Not a formal prayer. More like a running dialogue that usually starts with:

Are you still there, God? It’s me. Melissa. Again.

For years, I thought that if I moved fast enough, I could get ahead of myself.
Ahead of the years I stayed.
Ahead of the moments I knew better and didn’t act.
Ahead of the version of me who felt like she should have figured things out sooner.

Speed felt like protection.
It also felt like progress.
Looking back, it was neither. Including herself.

If that’s you, you’re in the right place.

This is the story of how I moved 3,000 miles during a pandemic, thinking Nike would save me from myself. Spoiler: it didn’t.

So here’s what I’m inviting you into: if something in this story resonates, drop a comment. Tell us where you are in your own journey, because the magic happens when we stop pretending we have it all figured out and start showing up as ourselves.

If you know, you know.

Here we go….

Journey with me back to the Spring of 2021?

I’m 52, single, living alone in a Jersey City high-rise penthouse. Floor-to-ceiling windows. Manhattan skyline views. The whole setup screamed single, ambitious, hardworking, independent woman living her best life.

The phone rings. Nike wanted me.

Sounds like a dream, right?

Except, here’s the reality:

I’d moved into this place exactly one year earlier, March 7th, 2020, right as the world shut down. Fresh off an incredibly painful breakup. By May, I got hit with a corporate RIF. Reduction in force. Laid off.

Financially? I was fine. Emotionally? I was dying inside.

I was drowning in that penthouse. Drowning in the noise of my own mind. Drowning in the desperate need to prove I was still somebody.

The penthouse, the lifestyle, the friends, none of it mattered when the thing that defined me was gone. When I couldn’t actually DO anything.

I was trapped alone with the one person I didn’t know how to be with: myself.

I numbed with whatever was available because it was the only escape left. I watched ALL the Netflix. Then ALL the Prime. Then ALL the Apple.

So, when Nike called, it felt like a dream and a lifeline all at once.

We had spent months interviewing. This wasn’t a quick phone screen and an offer. This was a courtship. They needed a catalyst for change in their corporate IT division. Someone to build an entirely new HR Product Management organization from the ground up. Someone who could walk into a massive corporation and actually move the needle.

And I was absolutely built for that. Twenty-five years of receipts said so.

But here’s what made me say yes without hesitation:

Nike + Oregon felt like the ultimate geographic cure. New city, new role, new life. I could leave behind the breakup, the RIF, the year of Netflix-induced paralysis. I could finally become the woman I’d been chasing my whole life.

I didn’t know then what I know now: wherever you go, there you are.

Late at night in that penthouse apartment, staring at the Manhattan skyline, I told myself this wasn’t just a job. This was my escape route.

My chance to finally have the life I’d been chasing for thirty years. The one where I got to be me. Authentic, audacious, brazen me.

Where work was excellent, but not everything. Where I had connection, belonging, fulfillment, meaning. Where my life was bigger than my resume. Where I wasn’t just performing success, but I was actually living it.

I saw the potential for a complete recalibration. And I courageously ran straight toward it.

I packed up and moved to Portland, Oregon, in August 2021.

I genuinely believed, like, deep in my soul believed, that Nike + Melissa was an official WE. Capital letters. A commitment. A glamorized fairy tale.

The Fantasy I Sold Myself

I wasn’t just accepting a job offer. I was buying into a complete vision where one move, one title, one company would deliver the entire package.

Backyard firepits with new best friends. Swapping stories over Oregon Pinot. Finally learning piano like I’d been saying I would for twenty years. Hiking on weekends. A vibrant social life. A sense of belonging I’d been craving but couldn’t name. The goddess-in-her-50s era I’d been promised by every midlife transformation article I’d ever read.

In my head, it was the ultimate Done-For-You Midlife Reset. Nike would give me the platform, Oregon would give me the lifestyle, and all I had to do was show up and collect my new life.

I mean... the audacity of that belief system. The absolute delusion.

But here’s the thing: I needed to believe it. Because at 52, I was in the middle of a desperate search for meaning that I couldn’t even admit to myself. And if I could just get to Oregon, get into this role, get started on this new chapter - then maybe I’d finally find it.

How It All Unraveled

Here’s what I conveniently forgot to factor into my Done-For-You Midlife Reset plan:

I had just moved 3,000 miles away from every single person who actually knew me, my history, my humor, my heart, into a state where I couldn’t even leave my apartment without feeling like a fish out of water.

Oh, and the “on-site” job they’d promised? The whole reason I’d convinced myself this move made sense? Completely remote. Indefinitely. No office. No in-person team. No casual coffee runs or spontaneous hallway conversations or the organic relationship-building I’d always relied on in every other role.

Just me, alone, in a new apartment, in a new city, during a pandemic, trying to build an organization and earn trust and prove I was the right hire... via Zoom.

And here’s the part I really, truly did not see coming: I arrived needing connection and belonging desperately.

Like, viscerally, physically, emotionally needing it. My nervous system was screaming for it.

Which, as you can imagine, came across as... well, desperate.

And when you show up desperate for connection while also trying to prove you’re the confident, competent, badass catalyst they hired to transform their entire operation?

That’s a very special kind of disaster.

The Baggage I Brought With Me

Here’s what I didn’t understand about myself at the time:

I’d spent my entire life as a Warrior. Built for battle. Show me a challenge, and I’ll conquer it. Show me a ladder, and I’ll climb it. Show me a negotiation, and I’ll win it.

For thirty years, this worked brilliantly. Every corporate ladder I climbed, every impossible project I delivered, every difficult negotiation I won - that was the Warrior doing what she does best. Adapting to survive. Proving my worth. Charging into the arena and coming out victorious.

She’s relentless. She’s strategic. She’s capable of enduring immense pressure. And she’s phenomenal at what she does.

But here’s what she’s never been able to do: rest. Receive. Soften. Admit when she needs help. She only knows how to fight forward and relentlessly persevere.

And at midlife? That pattern starts to crumble.

Because midlife isn’t asking you to fight harder. It’s asking you to receive. To soften. To finally stop proving and start being.

But I didn’t know that yet.

So I packed up all my armor and drove it 3,000 miles across the country. The chronic over-functioning. The relentless proving. The belief that exhaustion equals excellence. The terror that if I slowed down or admitted I needed help, everything would fall apart.

I arrived in Oregon in August 2021 full of hope. Moving was familiar territory; I’d done it my whole life. State to state. Job to job. New city, new role, new version of myself. I was a chameleon. It was innate.

I joined Nike ready to create a more fulfilling life. I said yes to everything. But I missed everything. The cues. The passive-aggressiveness. The toxic culture simmering underneath the beautiful Pacific Northwest politeness. I wrote it off as normal corporate stuff.

Just like in the beginning of a relationship, my codependent self took it all on. I dove in headfirst. I worked harder to prove I belonged.

It wore me out fast.

When It All Fell Apart

On the outside, I looked like I was crushing it. New senior role. Big title. Leading transformation at a Fortune 100 company.

On the inside? I was terrified.

People loved being around my energy. I made them laugh. I showed up bubbly, sharp, fun - the life of the party. But I didn’t trust any of it.

I showed up to happy hours and drank my way through the awkward small talk with people who had families, homes, and roots. People who belonged there in ways I couldn’t imagine.

I was 52, single, living alone, having moved state to state and job to job my entire adult life. No kids. No family nearby. No home I owned. Just searching and searching for something I couldn’t name.

These people had lives. Stability. The things I suddenly realized, somewhere in my late 40s, that I desperately wanted but had absolutely no idea how to get.

So I performed. I made friends with a coworker and her family. I showed up as someone else … a fun, independent party woman whose whole life was work and play. I thought the “play” part was my balance.

But it was my mask. My escape. And the irony?

Connection is the very place you find yourself. Not isolation.

But I didn’t know who I was. So how could I share her? How could I believe people actually liked me when I didn’t even know who “me” was?

I worked twelve, fourteen-hour days. Not because work needed me, but because I was avoiding feeling the gap between who I was performing as and who I actually was inside.

And when I got something wrong at work - didn’t know the answer, couldn’t influence the outcome - it wasn’t normal new job stuff. It was “I’m a failure” shame spirals that sent me into seriously bad behavior and more numbing.

By July 2022, I hit a wall. Not a gentle “maybe I should make some changes” wall. Not an “I’m feeling a little burned out” wall.

A full-velocity, everything-comes-to-a-screaming-halt, legitimately-don’t-know-if-I’m-going-to-survive-this wall.

Complete burnout. Complete breakdown. Complete stop.

I thought I was just having a bad quarter. Turns out I’d been building to that moment for a decade.

The pattern had been there the whole time - achieve, escape, repeat. Perform, numb, perform harder. Push until something breaks, then push through the breaking.

The Warrior doing what she does best: fighting. Even when the battle was killing her.

I genuinely believed that if I just kept moving, kept achieving, eventually I’d feel fulfilled. Secure. Enough.

Instead, I felt nothing. Because I didn’t actually know who I was anymore.

I knew who I could be at any given moment … that was my gift. The chameleon. The shape-shifter. The woman who could light up a room.

But deep down? I’d lost me.

I’d been searching state to state, job to job, desperately looking for what everyone else seemed to have - stability, roots, home.

And somewhere in my late 40s, I woke up and realized: I want that. I had no idea I’d wanted it until midlife smacked me in the face with it.

And I had absolutely no idea how to get it.

Learning to Call in my Sovereign

It’s been three years since that breakdown.

Three years of doing the actual, unglamorous work of recalibration. Therapy. Coaching certification. Energy Leadership training. Human Design study. Archetypal work. Spiritual practice.

And somewhere in that journey, I made another move. This time to Florida. A conscious choice to move closer to family. It turned out to be exactly where I needed to be.

And here’s what I learned: The Warrior isn’t the problem. She’s essential. She’s powerful. She’s the reason I’ve accomplished everything I have.

But she can’t be in charge of everything anymore.

She needs the Sovereign to lead. The one who can sit in her authority without needing to prove it.

She needs the Lover to soften her. The one who can receive connection and beauty without needing to earn it first.

She needs the Magician to show her the bigger picture. The one who can see patterns and trust the transformation.

When those four archetypes work together, Sovereign, Lover, Warrior, Magician, that’s when you get leadership that doesn’t fracture your life.

That’s when you get ambition that includes you in the equation.

That’s recalibration.

The God Question I Couldn’t Stop Asking

In the middle of all this, I kept having this conversation with God.

Which is strange because I’ve had an estranged relationship with God since I left home at 15. Like, actively estranged. Pissed off. Done with the whole concept.

I didn’t believe out loud. I definitely didn’t go to church. I rolled my eyes at people who talked about their “spiritual practice.”

But deep down? I believed. I just didn’t want to admit it. And in moments of absolute desperation, I’d call on it. That voice. That presence.

Are you still there, God? It’s me, Melissa.

Like Judy Blume, but with way more baggage and a corporate expense account.

At 52, completely broken open, that question became the only one that mattered.

Are you still there? Because I have no idea who I am anymore. And I need some help here.

It wasn’t a prayer, exactly. It was more like a check-in with someone I’d ghosted for 37 years and was now desperately hoping would still take my call.

And here’s what’s wild, the answer that kept coming back wasn’t about what to DO.

It was about who to BE.

Not the Warrior. Not the performer. Not the shape-shifter who could adapt to any room and prove her value on command.

Just... me. The actual me who’d been buried under three decades of corporate armor and achievement addiction.

The midlife recalibration isn’t about finding God. It’s about God finding you. Or you finding yourself. Or maybe they’re the same thing.

I’m still not sure. I’m still asking the question.

Are you still there, God? It’s me, Melissa. Please help me see, feel, hear what’s next?

And that uncertainty - that not-knowing - turns out to be exactly where the magic lives.

What I Know Now

And here’s what I can tell you from the other side, sitting here in February 2026:

Your ambition isn’t the problem. It’s the most powerful thing about you.

I mean that. Your drive, your hunger for more, your refusal to settle - that’s not what’s breaking you.

The problem is the way you’ve been surviving it.

The relentless proving. The chronic over-functioning. The belief that exhaustion is just the cost of being excellent. That if you stop pushing, everything will fall apart.

That trade was never real.

You don’t have to choose between ambition and life.

You don’t have to sacrifice yourself to be successful. You don’t have to keep running on fumes to prove you deserve to be in the room.

What you need, what I needed, is a recalibration.

Not a slow-down. Not a settle-for-less. Not a “find your work-life balance” platitude.

A recalibration.

So your ambition and your life are finally moving in the same direction instead of tearing you apart from the inside. So your Warrior has a Sovereign to guide her and a Lover to soften her and a Magician to show her the bigger magic she’s creating.

So you can lead with power without your life fracturing around you. So you can finally include yourself, your actual self, not just the performing version, in your own definition of success.

And Now, For You

It’s February 2026.

If you're reading this and something's stirring, that inner voice whispering there's more, that restlessness you've been calling anxiety, that voice asking, 'Is this really it?' I need you to hear this:

That voice isn’t asking for more achievement. It’s asking for more YOU.

It’s the midlife recalibration. The God voice that’s calling you back to yourself. Not the performed version. Not the shape-shifter who can fit anywhere. The actual you who’s been waiting this whole time.

The leaders I work with now? They’re not failing. They’re not stuck. They’re not broken. They’re incredibly capable women who have built, carried, and delivered more than most people ever will.

But somewhere along the way, their ambition and their life went to war. And they’ve been fighting that war for so long, they forgot there was another option.

The gap between where you are and where you want to be isn’t about capability. You’ve proven you’re capable a thousand times over.

The gap is about who you're being while you pursue those goals. And whether the way you’re showing up actually includes you in the equation.

P.S. You have everything you need inside you. You are exactly where you need to be.

So that’s Chapter 1.

Here’s what I’m sitting with: I’d been searching state to state, job to job, desperately looking for what everyone else seemed to have. Stability. Roots. Home. And I had absolutely no idea how to get it.

The breakdown. The recalibration. The God questions. The learning to call in the Sovereign, the Lover, the Magician. That’s what the next chapters will explore.

But for now, I’m curious: where are you in your own recalibration right now?

Drop a comment. Tell me your story. Let’s create space for us to explore this with those who relate to any of it.

Because this work? It’s not meant to be done alone.

Thanks for being here. How about you?

I’m Melissa. I’ve been writing these stories, moments from my life that won’t let me go. Some are funny. Some are spiritual. Most are about the gap between who I thought I’d be at 50 and who I actually am.

Here’s what I know now: your results will only ever be as powerful as the energy you lead with.

And for years, I was leading from empty. From pressure. From performance. From a place that desperately needed to Over-Achieve!

The thing about ambition is nobody tells you it can cost everything while looking like success from the outside.

I spent 25 years believing that the next achievement, role, job, or experience would fix it. I 100% believed that moving to Oregon in the middle of COVID to build and lead a new organization at Nike would save me. (Spoiler: it didn’t.) That working harder would finally make me feel like I’d arrived. (It just made me exhausted.)

And somewhere along the way, I realized: my innate ambition and my values had been at war. And I was done living that way.

Who this is for

I don’t know what this publication will become. Maybe just a place where I figure things out in real time. Perhaps something that helps you view your journey differently.

But if you're a woman whose ambition and values have been at war - and you're standing at an edge you can't quite name yet - you might recognize yourself here.

What to expect

First chapter drops next week: how I convinced myself a job at Nike would solve my burnout problems. (And what actually happened instead.)

I’ll be writing monthly (maybe twice if the stories won’t wait).

Thank you for reading.

If you know, you know.
