This has been a very rewarding experience for me: toiling away at something on my own, flinging it out into the world (local zine distro), forgetting about it entirely and moving onto the next one. I’ve been lucky enough to hear that the ones that have landed at Sticky Institute have sold out (a friend who went to buy a copy couldn’t get one and they told him this). But if you would like me to mail one to you I can do this for 8AUD- link for that here. If you would like to look at what zines are available you can look at my Instagram account: here. So far they’re collections of very smutty stories, but the next one will be both longer and unrelated to sex.

Thank you for your support. I hope to keep at this project for a long time.

An assortment of flanges

2025

Mara Lakshmi

This year has been a busy one with many things that have happened. I’ve tried to write about it a few times but some of it I don’t want to immortalise by putting it here. It started swiftly after my friends and I watched the new year fireworks by the river then went back to the rented function room nearby to do more dancing. It was 1am January 1st. I put my bag and coat away and took the hand of a lead to dance. During my first dance of 2026 I tore my meniscus. I couldn’t dance for nearly two months, which upset me deeply. I spent a lot of time sitting on my couch and openly weeping as if I’d lost a beloved pet. I was dating a fellow hobby dancer at the time who had asked me out after we bumped into each other when I took an interstate trip. My injury motivated the both of us to keep up a beneficial stretching routine that I’ve managed to keep up nearly every day this year. A memorable date idea he had involved bringing a puzzle to my house for us to do together to keep my mind off my injury. A few months passed, we danced and stretched together a great deal, we made some progress through his ever growing list of restaurants that he’d always wanted to try before he left, then he made an anticipated move to a different city. During his last week in my city he visited the house I was cat sitting at and we danced together in the living room. Just before he left we shared a long hug that at least on my end felt more intimate than most of the time we’d spent in bed together. Being friends with him felt more honest than being his girlfriend.

A few months passed and I got a job that I overall am a better fit for and I’m currently in what I’m calling the boot licking phase of my career. This is where I do my best to give a great impression so I can get another contract. It’s been easier to do that here as I have a genuine like for the place that was sometimes missing in past roles.

I was told about an interview in mid May I think, then did it without much preparation as it was short notice, merely holding mental notes from other interviews that I’d had. What to do and what not to do, using the knowledge I already have to get me through. My first day was sometime in late May. I moved house for the second time this year the same week I started at the new job. I didn’t get much sleep those few days.

It’s been overall fun since getting the role. Working with students and learning new technologies. I’m understanding how to work with CNC software, how to connect electrical components on a breadboard. Ohms law. The beauty of having an assortment of flanges. MIG welding. Getting a cross halving join right.

As part of my boot licking campaign I volunteered with the school production on a weekend night. They were holding it in the theatre on campus. The school looked vast in the darkness, empty in a way that it never is during the day. I rode my bike to the station and took my bike with me on the train, then locked it just outside the building. It was fun to cycle up the path without the worry of foot traffic, to not feel rushed as I usually do at my place of work. I sat in the hair/makeup/changing room and murmured via walkie talkie with the rest of the crew backstage, telling them when certain actors were making their way over to what wing. The kids buzzed around, being theatre nerds. Even the things they spoke about sounded familiar- not so much the actual topics but the way in which they spoke about them. I was also a theatre nerd in high school who willingly went to school on a weekend so I thought this was cute. I plucked softly at a ukulele from one of the music rooms to quell my boredom without looking at my phone and losing sight of the live stage feed. True to their character, a student brought a guitar from the same room and quietly played along.

Early on in the new job I bought tickets to Playlunch to see my teacher friend and his girlfriend. The show date was on the last day of term, so I sent him a joking message about it being a celebration. I was looking forward to seeing them play, making each other laugh with work stories.

I’ve been dancing a lot since recovering from the injury. There are very few videos out there of me dancing- I don’t perform, only social dance, and don’t like to ask others to film me. It makes me feel self conscious and I can’t put myself as thoroughly in the moment once I’ve inconvenienced someone with my request; this usually results in a sub par dance. But despite my lack of visual evidence I feel I’ve improved a good chunk this year. I can play with timing, read and respond to leads and have improved my ability to connect during the dance.

I go to six hours of dance lessons a week. I didn’t expect to be a person who does that as an adult but doing it now makes a lot of sense. I find that I often share traits with many people I’ve met through dance- proactive, easy to laugh, enough energy reserves to spend hours dancing through the week as well as work a full time job. This Summer, like last Summer, we attempt to organize beach dances. It’s become my favourite thing to do this time of year. A few weeks ago I successfully organized one such dance at a local pier.

A partnered dance is a conversation- you hear that phrase a lot. The more I dance the more truthful it seems. You make it better simply by mentally tuning in and responding in time to what is being said. Sometimes leads try to speak to me during the dance itself- I dislike this because it prevents me from being as present as I could be with the task at hand. One conversation drowns out another.

I went to one such dance recently. Slinking in a little later than usual because I overslept and was embarrassed about rocking up empty handed to the potluck. “Sorry, I’m a beginner” a man told me as he fumbled with matching the timing of his basic step with the music.
“Nothing wrong with that at all,” I said. Smiling, holding my head up, trying not to watch his feet too closely. He kept apologizing, talking when it would have suited more to stay quiet and focus on moving in time.
“Please. Just… shut up and try to stay on time,” I finally said. Then he didn’t speak until the end of the song. His timing noticeably improved.
“Thank you… and sorry,” he said. We were both laughing, shaking our heads.

I made another foray into online dating and downloaded an app again, then was promptly asked out to a local bar by a sweet man named Asher who lived a brief bike ride away from me. Half of my dislike of dating apps comes from the new job they create- it feels like work a lot of the time, having to open a little thing to check it and think of responses. I don’t like having too many pointless apps on my phone because I don’t want to look at it too much. I don’t understand the impetus in taking your phone to the loo, for instance. So it was a relief to be asked out quickly. I want to get to know a human, not a man’s digital idea of himself through the lens of an algorithmic dating app. I’d been transparently sent messages that were written by AI a few times too and was swiftly losing the fucks I had to spend on this endeavour, but it was a lot easier to be kind and giving with my attention with the benefits of observing someone in person.

After we’d known each other for approximately 48 hours my latest foray suggested we book a weekend away in the countryside. We found an Airbnb and decided on a date about a month or so away. It was difficult to find time to see each other because of our work schedules but we found snatches of enjoyable hours here and there. I quickly learned, through his own admissions, that he was dealing with the consequences of a difficult past. He seemed to be struggling internally, and though he was always high-functioning, I worried about his relationship with alcohol.

I thought about my own experiences with the intense depression of my mid/late teens and twenties. It was given more weight by the hormonal shift that happened during those years, then swiftly urged along by our family dynamic and lack of healthy coping mechanisms at the time.

Asher suggested we end things on the basis that he did not deserve me. I’ve heard this before and despite the apparent compliment of it the rejection it contained hurt my feelings and confused me greatly. This was a man who had also suggested we consider living together after six days of knowing the other. The experience made me feel- on an emotional level- like a violently shaken snow globe, but we decided to keep trying. It hadn’t been very long. We shared a lingering hug.

“I think I love you a little bit,” he said. An uncomfortable jolt went through me.
“Jesus Christ dude,” I remember replying. The words tumbled out more from my own shock than anything else.

On the last day of term my friends and I went to see Playlunch. I was tired but looking forward to socialising, hearing live music from a band I love. Last year we saw the same band and bounced around in the basement of a small venue. We sat in the back of an Uber catching up, comparing our respective terms. We had lots of time- the Friday night traffic was rotten. We were figuring out the logistics of where we could get high before the show. Easier to do with the aid of our respective vapes. Between that we took turns complaining about various things.

“If this thing with him ends then I’m done with the apps. You really can meet just anyone on those things,” I complained to David, venting my frustration with the whole process. I’d met men in the wild before and it felt more well rounded because it was- I had a better idea of who they were as human beings beforehand. Bypassing the bitter effort of using a dating app is a bonus too. I could barely justify the time spent on it.

We wandered around to an alley and smoked and joked about our students. Adolescents are funny in their complete lack of self awareness. We met up with T and ate fried chicken at a place I’ve never been to before. We joined the line and waited and waited and waited. We were there early so we got in the mosh pit. There were three headliners, which is one too many. They were all very good but went on for a while and they weren’t who I was there for. A man at the start gave a sexy performance of a song in which he likened himself to a dog in the lyrics. The cheerful saxophone player, who played in all the headliner bands, crushed it. I was sweating profusely by the time Playlunch came on. During Harold a man dressed in a blow up giraffe costume crowd surfed and danced on stage with the band. We were all coated in sweat by the time it was through. I barely spoke on the Uber back. Knackered. In need of some restorative silence.

I slept most of the next day. On Saturday night I went salsa dancing at a venue I don’t go to that much due to its slightly inconvenient location and smaller size. Despite this I had an excellent time, struggling to dance on2. Feeling the familiar sensation of both envy and admiration for people who knew how to dance both styles with little to no confusion. I danced until it was nearly closed and watched performances put on by other people who were also hobby dancers. We clapped and whistled wildly each time a big trick or something flirty was performed. One woman landed in a split then, as her lead picked her up, blew a kiss to the audience. That got a big reaction.

I drove the quiet drive home with a window half down to keep myself alert with fresh air. I rinsed the sweat off myself, smoked a small amount of weed, scribbled in my journal then went to bed.

I slept most of Sunday too. Taking advantage of a slightly later start on Monday, I went dancing on Sunday night at a venue I love but can so rarely go to. The live band played their typically fast numbers that I found difficult to keep up with. One lead and I laughed helplessly as we tried and failed to take steps in time to a very fast rhythm on a song with a crashing jazzy trumpet solo. The red lighting made me forget what time it was- midnight by the time I left. I bundled myself into my puffer then, the sweat on me cooling, and drove myself home. My top was soaked. In my parked car outside my house, Asher rang me and broke things off for good. Okay, if that’s what you want I’d said, the verbal equivalent of throwing up my hands. As we spoke, he insisted that I keep the weekend trip we had planned and paid for 50/50, and that I shouldn’t pay him back for his half. I felt a sob build in my chest, but tiredness overtook it. Half saddened and half relieved. I wanted to rinse off and go to bed. Before I did this I left two friends teary voice notes. The violently shaken snow globe had been set down. I showered and tossed myself into a deep sleep. I had to drive for two hours tomorrow.

The next morning I would meet the next man I’d date.

Caleb and I were booked into a professional development workshop that went for a few days. We both signed in together, then were paired together because we were seated next to each other for the series of projects which made up the duration of the workshop. He made me laugh a lot. We ended up carpooling after I realised he lived on the same train line I do and that his journey on public transport took more than twice the amount of time mine did simply because he was unable to drive there. I offered for him to meet me in the morning at the train station I live nearby in order to cut his commute time in half.

I learned that he was new to the state and lived in a big house that he bought with his family and four animals. I recognized that he was cute, handsome even, but made nothing of it. Lots of men are attractive but that doesn’t have much sway with me if that’s all there is.

We spent the four days learning about different types of systems and how to document our decision making processes. One of the systems we attempted to make was constructed entirely out of a Lego equivalent, some syringes and tubing. So the only power supply needed for it was air power (with humans pushing the syringes). You could also potentially use a motor in some way to do the pushing on the syringes but the time we were given didn’t allow for that exploration. Coding, limitations on materials and amounts of those materials etc. Caleb made a comment telling me that it made him feel good to make me laugh which made my ears prick up then. I realised then that he probably thought I was cute too. On the last day of the workshop and what I thought might be our last day together, I invited him to go dancing with me.

During the drive we were mucking around, taking turns making the other laugh. “I’m sure women invite you to go salsa dancing with them all the time,” I joked.
“Not the attractive ones,” he replied quickly. I felt myself smile despite my attempt not to. It was basically in the bag then; I just needed to hold it open. He told me he was excited to try dancing; he’d never done it before. I love seeing people push themselves out of their comfort zones and I love introducing people to dance. It’s nearly all I talk about these days. That was a Thursday afternoon.

We spent the majority of Sunday afternoon and evening in a part of the city he had never been to. I parked my car too far away and was sweating when I got there slightly late. He’d seen me in relatively plain work clothes all week; some slight look passed over his face when I turned up in my dance sneakers and a short skirt with lipstick on. We went to the free beginners dance class and I helped him through the basic steps. We ate very good ice cream from my favourite place to get it. All the while we chatted and joked about things that I’ve forgotten now. I confessed that because I dance at night on the weekends I usually take a nap during the day, so spending an afternoon with him was making me sleepier than I wanted to be. I parked in an undercover parking lot and attempted to take a nap in my car. He patiently sat with me. I struggled to fully drift off but sitting in the dark with my eyes closed and my oversized puffer over my face was an adequate surrogate for sleep.

I put my seat back. He scrolled on his phone in silence as I tried to rest. We did this for some while. I took note of how my joints and muscles felt. I thought about my tight left trapezius and my continued efforts to stretch it, my stiff hip flexor.

I drove around looking for a free spot after my brief not-nap. Before we’d even entered the bar and started dancing I felt myself start to get tired but wanted to push through for the sake of having already bought tickets. We had lots of time so I drove slowly and managed to find a free spot right around the corner. Finding free parking in the city on a weekend always feels like getting away with something.

We took two classes together. After that he told me he needed to be mindful of his recent knee injury, so he settled for watching the band and filming some of my dances. I used my new knowledge of his injury to start spouting off to him about the benefits of a regular stretching routine (I can now touch my toes, which I couldn’t do before injuring myself). I ran into some friends that I suspected would be there and we danced together. He took a short video of me doing so.

A couple of weeks later we went on that weekend in the countryside originally intended for a different version of my life. I thought I’d use it as an opportunity to have some time alone, meditate etc. but things moved differently and Caleb came with me. I’d been quietly worried about spending 48 hours straight with someone I’d only met recently, but I needn’t have been. We spent the time eating BBQ we cooked on the fire pit, taking gentle walks, watching TV and talking and talking and talking. It had started to feel like I was being rewarded for a difficult year.

A few months whizzed past and we recently ended things, realising we were too different. The break up was a short, polite phone call that I couldn’t wait to finish. “I wouldn’t trade a second of the time we had together…” Caleb had said down the line, voice thick with feeling. It sounded like he meant it and I believed him. The need to express these sentiments always seems to come too late. I responded with silence; I’d already closed myself off to him.

Immediately after hanging up I allowed myself a single extended crying jag while driving around- donating unwanted things to an op shop, seeing a friend. At a red light I stretched out my neck, tears rolling down my cheeks. I kept my face forward, determined to make eye contact with no one. I gave way to one self-pitying sentence scrawled in my journal: I continue to be unlovable, the last word blown up and bolded on the page, brightly coloured in with markers. After completing it I slammed it shut, feeling a little embarrassed. Better to express it that way than in any other.

A few weeks into my new role I found myself in a meeting where we were encouraged to share tips on rapport building with some of the difficult to reach students. I spoke a little about the value of sometimes having “random chats” with students even if they were off topic. It’s easy to forget that teenagers, even while in the midst of their adolescent disdain, are still aware of what you’re saying and giving your attention to. I believe that this is true and important but sometimes struggle with conveying that verbally when the moment requires. “Conversations are a tool we have access to in the classroom for this. When you think about it that way… your words become your scalpel. Each cut should be deliberate”. I felt I’d muddled the delivery, but the point remained.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" I’m thankful that one of my favourite parts of my work is relationship building with adolescents, and it seems easier here because most of my students seem used to talking to adults about the things that they are learning. I’m thankful for the class I covered recently, a senior politics subject, where we spoke about the Russia Ukraine conflict. One of their upcoming tests requires the students to write about a recent political conflict and so a confident student who felt he was well prepared asked to take over the projector and showed some of his study notes to the rest of the boys so they could take notes. I’m thankful that some of his slides had memes related to the conflict which made complex ideas funny/easier to understand, ie Ukraine-NATO relations.

I’m thankful for the moment today when I saw an unusually good ping pong player seemingly beating all of his peers as they took turns trying to fell him. I egged on the others to take him down none of them prevailed. I’m thankful that as the bell rang his friends high fived him and it nearly made me want to ask for a high five too and it felt nice to see someone experience a moment of their life that they’ll probably remember twenty years later.

I’m thankful for the big bowl of oats I have for breakfast at work each day. I’m thankful that repetition leads to perfection and to this end I have consumed several kilos of oats and many litres of soy milk to find the exact kind of oat toppings I like. Apple, peanut butter, blueberries, banana, strawberries etc.

I’m thankful that my high levels of soy milk consumption has now led me to be a snob about soy milk and I finally tried making my own a few days ago. I keep it in an unlabelled jar in a shared work fridge so it ends up looks a little sinister. Jar of mystery milk.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" That being said I’ve become a soy milk nerd and this was some of the nicest soy milk I’ve had. There are two ingredients in this: soy beans and water. After I tasted this I realised that most soy milk you buy has added sugar and a much higher water to bean ratio than mine did. I cook by touch/taste/smell so I barely use measurements. But mine was about a 1 to 4 ratio of soybeans to water.

Standing at the stove was annoying. This behaves like milk so you must watch it slowly simmer for twenty minutes as it overboils quickly. In this time I started rereading Prostitute Laundry. I love what could be described as intimate confessionals by women and this fits that bill. I got lost in it and accidentally stood at the stove stirring for 40 minutes.

Theres the soy milk you make and a byproduct that comes as a result of this process called okara. This was interesting to cook with. I made a curry, but could see myself using it for all sorts of things in the future. It’s a big fibre and protein source and bland enough that it can be used widely.

I’m thankful for an interaction I had a few weekends ago when I was at a salsa jack and jill competition. Between rounds they played a few songs for social dancing. I’d arrived a little late so saw the tail end of the first round. After realising I knew most of the people competing in the jack and jill I got very into it and clapped hard and shouted to cheer them on. When the round was done the competitors rested and the audience social danced. B, who I hadn’t seen and didn’t know was coming, pulled my arm to him for a hug before wordlessly leading me to the dancefloor. I was laughing in surprise and in full agreement. It feels familiar to dance with him, comfortable, and that leads to a greater propensity on my part to experiment and play with footwork etc. I tend to have mental notes in my head anyway about things I’d like to attempt while social dancing to see if I can refine them. I have become a salsa nerd too.

I’m thankful for Walden and reading about someone telling kids to go outside and touch grass except it’s 1840. I’m thankful for melatonin. I’m thankful that today, when I greeted a class with “Happy Friday fellas” one of the students let out a quintessentially adolescent groan and said Finally! I’m thankful for Friday.

Thank you notes 14th May 2025

I’m thankful for the quick bike ride I took after coming home from work today.

Mara Lakshmi

I’m thankful for the quick bike ride I took after coming home from work today.

I’m thankful for the new job I scored which has given me a modest pay bump, for at least a little while, but in the flurry of tying up loose ends at my current job in order to engineer a graceful exit I’ve been working too much and spending a lot of time hunched over my work laptop.

I worked at my current place for two years and didn’t think I was very memorable, mostly because I worked in a secluded office that didn’t get all that much foot traffic. I’m thankful that when I told some coworkers that I was leaving a few of them told me they would miss me and my “genuine and down to earth attitude”- I mostly take this to mean that I push back when I hear what sounds like pointless bullshit or needless veering off in meetings. I feel I can’t help doing this- I hate wasting time and am always striving for efficiency. It gives me a form of mental hives to watch others be indecisive.

I’m thankful for all the content I can use for the future that I generated in my current job, that I’ll be able to take with me. I’m thankful that I was the only person who did what I did which forced me to be independent in that sense. I’m thankful that I’ll be on a bigger team where I can bounce around ideas and collaborate more effectively, with people who most likely know more than I do.

But I’m thankful for the bike ride- I got home earlier than I thought I would and shovelled leftover farfalle with chicken and parmesan into my mouth. It was dark and I still haven’t bothered to buy any lights for my bike so I overrely on my high vis vest when it comes to the job of protecting my life while cycling. I’m thankful that I cycled through the parking lot of the golf course I live near, through the path that cuts through the woodsy area which leads to the footpath on the other side. I’m thankful that I cycled down the dark road that leads to the retirement village, then past the retirement village there’s a opening in the gate that you can get through on foot/bike which I did.

I’m thankful that immediately past this opening in the gate the somewhat gravelly residental street slopes noticably downward so I got to careen in the dark toward the reserve where everyone walks their dogs on the weekend. I’m thankful that because I’m currently staying in quiet suburbia everyone seems to want to stay inside after dinner if it’s dark so I had the reserve to myself. I’m thankful that the reserve was too steep and the path too gravelly for me to cycle so I had to get off my bike and walk it up the hill. I’m thankful that the sun had only just finished setting so the sky was diffused with soft purples and navy blue. I’m thankful that when I got to the top of the hill I tried cycling down and this idea started off well but the slope quickly became too steep and there wasn’t any lighting in the park which made me regretfully brake so I could get off my bike and walk down instead of risk an injury.

I’m thankful that when I was done with the reserve I cycled aimlessly around the residential streets, trying to see if I could figure out how to get home without using my phone. I’m thankful that some of the houses must have had dogs that smelled me when I cycled past and acknowledged my existence with their barks and I’m thankful to have felt the brief joy of being able to genuinely explore a new area (I’ve lived here for three weeks) while also being safe doing so. I’m thankful that I had my phone with me because I had to use it to get home as I suffer from the disease of most people under 40, which is that I have absolutely no sense of direction due to an overreliance on GPS technology.

I’m thankful that on the cycle home I felt, strangely, thankful for tearing my inner miniscus at 1am New Years day. I’m thankful that the reason I own a bicycle was for the purpose of healthily rehabilitating my knee at the recomendation of my physiotherapist, as a way to keep safely moving while I couldn’t dance. I’m thankful for what my physio said when I told him that the cycling was helping, in his Irish lilt: Yes, it’s good for the mind. Good to get out of the house.

I’m thankful that when I was a kid I equated exercise of most kinds as a form of humilation, because it involved using my loathed body to achieve some sort of goal which I often failed at because I didn’t like having to prove myself using my physicality. To this day I have a near phobia of team sports: You mean I have to exert myself toward some external goal and I have to disapoint people on my team at the same time?! That is a nightmare to me. I’m thankful that to this day the only types of exercise I can stand are kinds that are deeply uncompetetive (like social dancing, which I think of as one outlet for my creativity) and/or solitary (like solo bike rides, where I don’t have to withstand the opinions of others).

I’m thankful that when I got home I drank some water, hurriedly brushed my teeth, put my hair in a bonnet and immediately went to write this before any desire to do so left me.

The sun

Last week my salsa friends and I went dancing on the beach.

Mara Lakshmi

Last week my salsa friends and I went dancing on the beach. With Summer in full swing it’s good to take advantage of the heat so we’ve been trying to do it regularly. Between dances we take dips in the water to cool off. I can’t dance right now thanks to an injury but I came for a swim anyway. I watched other people dance and took occasional swims, carefully hobbling over the sand to the shore. I bobbed and kicked slowly in the waves. Constantly testing my knee, trying to use it gently. Healthy movement promotes healing, I keep reminding myself. Between jumping among waves and watching young children play on the shoreline we talked about dancing, work, immigration. Something I like a lot about my salsa friends is that most of them weren’t born and raised in this city- for instance one of them is an architect that migrated from her beloved city of Tehran due to what she referred to as the “shit fucking government”. Another spent his childhood in a different city North on the coast, then moved here for work and wanted an easy way to make new friends.

I watched people dance and quietly quelled my feelings of mild jealousy as best I could. It was good to be at the beach but it still feels frustrating to not be able to move in the way I want to the most. The sun began to lower in the sky. A busker came by and politely told us he had paid a fee to perform in the place we were dancing, so we moved to the large pier that jutted out into the ocean.

I watched more dancing and did more filming on my phone. A couple's toddler wearing nothing but a nappy and a sun hat joined in as he watched my friends, swaying in his drunken sailor walk. I found AN who had met me at the beach a few hours after I arrived. He was buried in his phone. “Are you focused on something or do you have time to watch the sunset with me?” I asked him.
“Of course I have time,” he replied. He took my hand and we walked closer to the fence to see the sun move. A pair of black swans bobbed on the shallow waves. It was an unexpected sight. I told AN about the myth that swans mate for life. It happens a good amount but it’s not an absolute.

The sun slowly merged with the horizon. We noticed that it seemed to slow the closer it got to disappearing behind the ocean. Oranges, pinks and purples horizontally diffused in the darkening sky. The swans floated side by side. We took a group photo with the rest of our salsa group, trying to get the sunset in the background. There was discussion from the rest of the group about eating fish and chips for dinner, which neither of us fancied having. We walked a few blocks away to have curry and mango lassi for dinner.

Inheritance

I’m thankful for this breathtaking article in Esquire by Patrick Fealey, a firsthand account of being homeless in America (and I’m thankful that someone made a GoFundMe page to support him).

Mara Lakshmi

I’m thankful for this breathtaking article in Esquire by Patrick Fealey, a firsthand account of being homeless in America (and I’m thankful that someone made a GoFundMe page to support him). Part of why I found this article unignorably readable is because my father has battled against the creeping tide of homelessness after a lifetime of financial difficulty.

After a few years of scant contact with my dad, in August of 2024, my mother rang me to tell me that the house he had been squatting in- the same place I spent a chunk of my twenties and a portion of my adolescence- was now due for demolition. The landlord, who knew our family due to how long we’d been living there, had been overall kind to us in his dealings and paid a final kindness when he saw my dad that day. Leaning, beleaguered, on his Mitsubishi in the driveway, my dad appeared unwell when the landlord drove slowly past to check on the house. He’d informed him of the demolition a while ago and was meant to have vacated, but he was squatting there instead. The house was an old build, possibly the oldest house on the street, and stuck out compared to the other residences. I remember this from when I would go for walks in my neighbourhood. He’d wanted to do a knock down rebuild for a while and was putting it off to convenience us and then my dad. He knew he was computer illiterate, old, somewhat physically feeble, and had an odd (to put it compactly) personality, so would struggle to move.

He rang my mother out of concern, who rang my brother and I.

A while before these phone calls, I visited my dad after he’d sent me a characteristically long and difficult to decipher text essentially asking for help to find a new place to live. I didn’t want him to know my address and he doesn’t have much money, so the cost of petrol to drive the round trip to see me seemed a burden he could avoid. It was easier if I went to his house.

At the time he lived with four other people who he sublet the spare rooms to- a straight couple, and a woman who looked to be in her fifties or sixties. The couple had a young child who looked to be about three. He stared in the way that little kids do when there’s a new stranger around. When I waved to him he shyly hid behind the kitchen counter.

This was the second time I had visited the house since leaving it and it looked slightly better off. The time before that he was living on his own in a four bedroom with a sizeable backyard. It was surprising to us that he’d decided to stay when he could have stood to downsize and saved some money. He lacked the ability to take care of it himself and the filth had piled up. He had been using the beds he wasn’t sleeping on as storage as well as the kitchen table and counters. I had to push stuff around with my feet as I walked around to avoid tripping, and navigate a path through. I could see the build up of dust and grime on various surfaces, which made a small tide of revulsion rise in my stomach. I did not want to sit on his couch. I’d visited that time in an effort to interview him for a personal project I was working on, and I couldn’t bear to speak to him inside. We went into the backyard. When I needed to pee, I chose to squat in the long grass in a secluded part of the large yard instead of using the bathroom.

When I’d asked him my interview questions he started off on his characteristic rambling that swiftly dissolved into near nonsense as he touched on whatever other topics floated into his mind. He rambled, meandered, from topic to topic, essentially monologuing. Sustained intellectual focus seemed difficult to him, so it is in turn difficult to follow his words. I reminded him why I was recording him and what it would be used for- he latched onto what I was saying momentarily, then seemingly disregarded it the moment I finished speaking. This is characteristic of what I know about him, but I still managed to be bothered by it. The thoughts and feelings of others, especially if those others were women and the negative thoughts and feelings were due to his actions, seemed to mostly be amusing to him if not irrelevant. Years ago I recall him loudly commenting on the bum of a female shop assistant as she bent at the waist to retrieve something from a drawer. She, the store manager, whipped around angrily and told him he wasn’t allowed in there anymore. He laughed as though she had told him a funny joke. A nearby shop assistant, a guy around my age at the time, gave him a look. She didn’t get that it’s a joke my dad had said, gesturing to her as though she couldn’t hear them. Hoping for some male camaraderie.
…Well it’s not much of a joke he’d replied, face flat. He shook his head slightly. It gave me a bit of hope, to see a man do that.

When we got back into his car with his purchase of transmission fluid, I let out a stream of swear words at him about what a misogynistic pig I believed he was. Is that so? he said, giggling. I fell into fuming silence. I reminded myself to give up on any hope of betterment at my hand in this arena. You can’t truly change anyone without the assistance of their own will.

But the more recent time at his house some of the clutter had been cleared thanks to what my father referred to as tenants, but my mild clean freak tendencies were still screaming internally at me. The couple and woman were all missing teeth of varied amounts, and the house had a distinctive dirty odour that I’d never smelled before and haven’t experienced since that I can only describe as burnt metal. I learned that dad had found the older woman living under the awning of a Woolworths and the young couple after he’d posted an ad for tenants in a free local newspaper. I learned that not much rent was being paid by the couple, who were also borrowing his car for free. They didn’t fill it up very much either by his account. “Why don’t you try to get the money from them?” I asked. “Did you have them sign some paperwork? You could go down that route,”
“It’s fine. They pay by cleaning the place up and making food” he replied.

When I visited they left fairly swiftly for some errand. I said hello and waved but got no recognition in return. The older lady had a clear dislike for them and carried what appeared to be a screwdriver with a sharpened end in her pocket, then took it in her hand when they passed by her to get to the front door. She told me she had a daughter around my age. She was friendly and smiley to me, visibly shy about her dental situation. She told me she had a daughter about my age who also “dressed all fancy” as I was. I was wearing a white shirt with buttons and black Doc Martens.

I showed him how to download the correct app to look at places to live. I showed him how to use some websites on his laptop, an old Chromebook I used for university that I then gave to him to use after I got an upgrade. I demonstrated each step, then asked him to copy what I’d just done. He seemed confused but told me he understood and was able to slowly copy my actions with prompts. As I walked out the front door, the older tenant followed me. We watched as the young couple piled themselves and their young child into my dads car. They drove off. As they passed us outside their clothes had that same metallic smell. I kept my face still. I lifted my fingers in a little wave to the woman. “Good luck out there” I said as I walked to my car. I was feeling full of the tremulous privilege of avoiding a lifestyle that resulted in missing teeth and living in filth with people who either hated or took advantage of you. I presumed I wouldn’t see any of them ever again, and this remained true for the people that weren’t my father.

We were told he didn’t seem well and this was a considerable understatement. He wasn’t at all, and he and his surroundings looked as expected. He was in the driver's seat of his car. The door was unlocked and I opened it to speak to him. His car was full of what looked like junk to us but we knew he’d see it as valuable because that’s the mentality of hoarders, or of this hoarder. He was unshaven and couldn’t speak. When I opened the door I smelled urine and realised he’d soiled himself.

“Hey dad, it’s me. Can you hear me?” I said, slow and clear. The voice I used for upset children and anxious animals. His pupils were the size of pinheads. His eyes roved over me, mouth opening but unable to form a response. I rang emergency services and waited on the line for a dispatcher to find an ambulance. I scanned over the junk in his car to see if I’d see anything of real value- drivers licence, birth certificate, medication etc. I found some things but they were minimal, buried under what looked like old towels, a large jug of water and an album of photographs.

I hadn’t willingly stepped into the house he used to inhabit for what felt like a long time. Now the place looked very different. It was mostly emptied, prepped for demolition. A small mountain of furniture and so on piled on the nature strip. I wandered around and looked at what I could of the empty house. In the garage my brother found the semi crushed body of a rat. I took a quick walk through the house as the dispatcher located an ambulance for me. The front bedroom windows had been broken and the screen door had been nearly removed from its hinges. The place was empty apart from some small toiletry items in one of the bathrooms. The burnt metallic smell was gone.

The dispatcher asked me to watch his chest very closely when I told her he’d lost consciousness during the call. I pushed past the neighbour who had made his way to his driveway. He’d stopped his motorised wheelchair directly in front of his car door, blocking my view. His concerned silent gawking seemed like a gigantic waste of time and space in the moment. “Tell me each time his chest rises” she’d said, so we can figure out his heart rate. I reached to wipe a bit of vomit off his chin with his jumper.

“Rise. Rise. Rise” I heard myself say. It felt like I’d been saying it for a while before the paramedics arrived, but in truth it couldn’t have been that long.

The paramedics were two calm young women, one of whom asked my brother to help our gangly father into a stretcher. He bent at the knees and pulled his arm over his shoulder and they got him on slowly. The paramedics used the voice that you use with crazy people and kids when they’re distracted and you need them to understand something. They needed to take his top layers off and he couldn’t move so I did it for him, one of the paramedics propping his torso up with the adjustable end of the stretcher. “Does he take anything? Drugs, alcohol?” one of them said, in a practised non judgemental tone.
“No. He’s never done any of that stuff. He doesn’t drink very much either, from what I remember” I said. She nodded silently, busy with loading him onto the equipment.

When he was loaded into the ambulance we heard them charge and then zap him with what I can only describe as medical jumper cables. Another neighbour came into our driveway. “Is he okay?” she asked.
“He’s in an ambulance, so no,” I replied. My brother gave me a look. I wasn’t being helpful. But why would you see someone being loaded into an ambulance and have questions as to whether or not they were okay? The answer is clear.

Before we left to meet the doctors at the hospital we were instructed to search for anything that would give clues to his medication or any ID documents. We emptied the contents of his car onto the driveway in an effort to find things but we found nothing. No license, passport, no bills with his name or address on them.

He was in hospital for around two months. Unconscious for half that time and in ICU for some of it, being watched by an individual nurse. He lost seven kilograms in three weeks due to being on nothing but a drip for that long. His body at first couldn’t expel excess fluid which was a problem, and resulted in his hands and ankles memorably blowing up to the point they looked like hams. He stayed in the hospital until he was in a stable condition. Then he was moved to a facility that works on rehabilitating people in order to gain back some physical mobility and independence. While this was all happening my brother and I were told of his assigned social worker, whose job was to get him housed in appropriate accommodations. She was competent, swift at responding to email, kindly and very clearly not a stranger to these sets of circumstances. We barely had to do any advocating on his part to get him appropriately housed.

In the last phase of his medical treatment he was transported to an outpatient clinic designed for physical rehabilitation. At this stage he had most all of his function returned, minus his existing arthritis and some other relatively minor health issues that occur with age. His main goal was to get moving independently, which he eventually managed to do. The personality I was familiar with never went away.

This whole process- from the ambulance to the permanent housing- cost us zero dollars thanks to Medicare, so I’m thankful for that too.

Before this experience I tended to pay a mild level of attention to homeless people I ran into, but this has since magnified. If I’m carrying some amount of cash and encounter someone unhoused, it’s clear to me that they could use my petty change far better than I ever would because the necessity of it is more urgent in their life than it is mine. No amount of money I give a homeless person is a waste. I think I’ll die believing this.

My dads housing, which is also heavily subsidised, is shared accommodation in a facility with nurses that are qualified to dispense medication and provide personal care. Most of the residents are around his age or older- people with significant disabilities, former addicts etc. It’s located in a suburb not too far away from where I live.

I’ve visited this facility twice. It’s large, quiet and organised. It’s on an unassuming street in a residential area, on a single floor building with a simple layout. From the outside it looks a little like a small medical clinic, but is residential on the inside. Most of the people that live there are quiet and seemingly keep to themselves, although I haven’t visited much. Everyone has their own room and there’s a shared living area. The nurses, who I chatted to briefly, seemed diligent and kind. The place smelled mildly of cleaning products and cigarette smoke from people smoking just outside the rear door. The large backyard area had a simple garden and some outdoor seating. He told me he spent a lot of time sitting out there reading when the weather was nice. Apart from the staff I was the youngest person there by a few decades. I kept getting stared at by the other residents because of this, I think. I stuck out. I don’t think they’re used to getting visitors. We don’t look as if we’re related either.

Once his case was closed with the outpatient clinic the doctor on his case rang me as his next of kin to brief me before officially closing his file. She used the word “remarkable” to describe his recovery from his near death experience. If a person is homeless, that is the most significant health problem they can have.

Toward the end of 2024, I rang my dad on his birthday; my version of a gift. He’d come to enjoy his new home then- the nurses took him out to lunch as they do for each of the residents on their birthday. He’d initially complained of a lack of freedom, but not having to worry about meals, housing and general home upkeep works for him. He’s reportedly treated well, and it’s better than where he was. His story, though, is one among millions. Each person I see sleeping rough now carries a piece of the same narrative, a reminder of the fragility of our given circumstances and the broad systemic failures that leave individuals behind who don’t have the benefit of their own support network.

I’ve been trying to finish writing this for a while, but couldn’t find the right type of end to it. All this happened months ago and I wanted to share it all then. I injured my knee just recently thanks to partying too hard for New Years, so I’ve been on crutches. I can’t go to the beach or dance- I would otherwise be doing a great deal of that around this time of year but now I’m forced to be with my own thoughts either indoors or in my car. I tried taking a walk (hobble?) but it was too laborious for me to get any enjoyment out of it.

Then, after a physiotherapist appointment, I sat in my car in the parking lot of the clinic and couldn’t stop thinking about what the old place looked like now. I drove there just to see it and parked across the street. The front and garage door had been replaced and the front lawn had been mowed. It’s a long term investment property which means a new family is renting it now. I looked up the address online and found the listing and looked at the photos. Since my dad left the place the landlord had finally gotten on with the renovations he had mentioned he’d wanted to do for years. New flooring, new carpet, new counter tops, spruced up outdoor area. The inside looked nearly foreign. I clicked through some more photos and found listing images that were taken when we lived there; I recognised a bread box in the kitchen that my brother made for a school project and the ugly couches we got for free thanks to my mothers job. That got a bigger reaction from me. I didn’t like living there for the most part, but I’m glad another family is getting enjoyment from the same place now.

30 October

I’m thankful for what I’ve started calling “Frankendrinks”, which is when I put things other than tea leaves in with my tea (I’m thankful that I jokingly called them that in front of my coworker but his delight in the silly phrase made me say it more).

Mara Lakshmi

I’m thankful for what I’ve started calling “Frankendrinks”, which is when I put things other than tea leaves in with my tea (I’m thankful that I jokingly called them that in front of my coworker but his delight in the silly phrase made me say it more). I always have, ever since I was a child – there are so many subtle variations of sensation. A delicate, pointed-nailed fifth finger can catch under dry scabs and flakes of mucous in the nostril and draw them out to be looked at, crumbled between fingers, and flicked to the floor in minute crusts. Or a heavier, determined forefinger can reach up and smear down-and-out the soft, resilient, elastic greenish-yellow smallish blobs of mucous, roll them round and jelly-like between thumb and fore finger, and spread them on the under surface of a desk or chair where they will harden into organic crusts. How many desks and chairs have I thus secretively befouled since childhood? Or sometimes there will be blood mingled with the mucous: in dry brown scabs, or bright sudden wet red on the finger that scraped too rudely the nasal membranes. God, what a sexual satisfaction! It is absorbing to look with new sudden eyes on the old worn habits: to see a sudden luxurious and pestilential “snot-green sea,” and shiver with the shock of recognition.

I’m thankful for the time today during a spin in a partnered dance where I wobbled a bit as I moved across the pavement and my leads arm quickly shot out to steady me. I’m thankful for shared reflexes and I’m thankful for muscle memory. I’m thankful, in the same vein, for how when you have several dances with someone you learn their style of movement and respond to it with your own. I’m thankful for shared body language. I’m thankful that twice today I had to wait less than three minutes at the platform for the train.

Strike this bargain

I watched Past Lives in the mid morning at a cinema in the middle of last year.

Mara Lakshmi

I watched Past Lives in the mid morning at a cinema in the middle of last year. I'd just awkwardly broken up with someone when I went to grab some of my stuff from his flat. As in, I had driven from his flat to the cinema with a calico bag with some of my belongings in tow in the hatch of my car. It was one of those breakups where it had all but happened officially: I'd been checked out for a long time after being thoroughly disappointed for too long and really should have left a while ago, but he had a nice couch and was very good at making me laugh. Saying it out loud- “I’m happier when I’m not with you, but I wish you the best and I’ll miss you etc.”- felt like a formality. I believe it was like that for both of us based on his response.

So it was a good time to watch Past Lives. I adored this film. I’m a strong believer in the enjoyment of art being almost as much a matter of quality and taste as it is timing.

It might not be a surprise then that one of my favourite films of all time is In the Mood for Love. I first watched that when I was 19, as part of a film class that I was taking in art school. Our lecturer introduced it by saying it would change how we fell in love with the implication that the change would be a positive one. I mostly remember finding it very sexy despite the noticeable lack of sex scenes and nudity. But that’s a given considering it stars a 90s Tony Leung.

My lecturer and I got on well and he liked my art because, in his words, it was “sassy” and “funny”. That’s an accurate description. I had a secret goofy and anguished side that I often couldn’t speak about directly out of shyness, perceived propriety or simply an inability to do so. My anguish and goof spurted out in the form of visual art. Most of this took place in journals that I would cut, stick, scribble and write in. I was making when I could but not trying hard enough, struggling with depression I didn’t know I had. The existence of mood disorders in eldest daughters was neither understood nor acknowledged in our matriarchal immigrant family. My metaphorical dinghy had a pinhole leak and I thought it was normal despite my shoes being wet. Four years later the dinghy would be centimetres from the ocean floor, but that’s an anecdote for another time.

<a class="image-link image2 Some people would find this film very boring as a result. Lying awake in their tiny apartment, novelist Arthur turns to his wife, fellow writer Nora. “I was just thinking about what a good story this is,” he says of the apparent love triangle not quite threatening his marriage – the reappearance of Hae Sung, Nora’s childhood sweetheart from Seoul, now a broad shouldered thirty something who’s come to New York for a week to catch up with her. As a general rule, screenwriters should avoid dialogue that sounds like it’s complimenting the script itself. But the characters in Past Lives are writers themselves - the very kind of people who go looking for “good stories” in the events of their own lives.

And Arthur is right. The saga of Nora and Hae Sung is a good, gentle story. There’s space to think about your own life. Spanning decades and continents, it gives you room to relate. That’s what moved me. Nora pores over messages she’s exchanged with her childhood love over Facebook. The laptop screen scrolls, the camera stays still. It rests on Noras face as she contemplates a communication from Hae Sung in silence, wondering how to respond. You think immediately of someone from your own past. The recognizable shudder of empathy moves through you. She remembers the person she was when she was with him; you think about the brand of thoughtless bitch you sometimes were with an ex. There’s tension, but it’s all unspoken. No dramatic knock down drag out fights here. Any messy emotions that might kill its dreamy vibe or roughen the road to a philosophical conclusion are smoothed out. I watched it with the understanding that for Nora, Hae Sung is more of an allegory of her cultural displacement than an old lover. Her attraction to him is a throb of nostalgia for the life she left behind when she left Korea.

In one of my favourite scenes Arthur stands in their kitchen, frowning, as he asks about Hae Sung. “Is he attractive? Are you attracted to him?”. It’s the most conflict you see in the film but these characters are seemingly good at communicating so there’s no struggle, no hiding. “When is he leaving again?” he asks, after a pause. This isn’t a laugh out loud film but the humour is all too recognizable. Who hasn’t felt that type of quiet jealousy?

It was about a year into trying my hand at visual art that I tacitly understood I might have been better off doing something reading and/or writing related. Painting and drawing were flash in the pan interests, but I’d been reading and keeping a journal since I had the ability to do both. I didn’t change courses for reasons that still slightly mystify me but probably had to do with laziness or my diminishing mental state. I was clawing through and the idea of change seemed like too much, so here we are now.

The past lives of Nora and Hae Sung are their childhoods, conserved and exalted in their memory and by modern communications: Skype, Facebook. These communications make up a section of another layer of reality that sits next to this one on the same plot, where each part of ourselves we’ve lost or left behind or exchanged for another (who can tell which is which?) still exists. The intersections where this reality permeates ours is when it feels most like a tale trying to resolve itself; sometimes that makes a good story.

22 April

I’m thankful for the good weather today.

Mara Lakshmi

I’m thankful for the good weather today. thankful for the vegan pot luck and boardgames we did as a belated birthday party. I’m thankful that since I was young I’ve absolutely loathed my birthdays because the idea of asking people to pay attention to me simply for getting older seemed like an excruciating concept. I’m thankful that we did it anyway and I got over my silly self. I’m thankful for salad, chickpea curry, homemade focaccia and spinach pastries. I’m thankful for rice pudding and truffles for dessert.

I’m thankful for when your friends bother to gather around in the same room at the same time to play boardgames because that is what you asked for for your bithday (“For my birthday can I please see all of you and can we play boardgmes?”). I’m thankful for the single joint I copefully carried in the off chance that we might share it and I’m thankful that we did. I’m thankful for when Sp laughs; for when babies laugh in general. I’m thankful that I wore my statement earrings that say “DON’T TOUCH ME” which I recieved as a gift about a decade ago now (I’m thankful for enduring loves).

I’m thankful for the long meandering walk I took through various un/derkempt laneways in an continuing effort to explore my new neighbouhood. rest in 2018, on a trip I took myself on for my birthday. I’m thankful that I was staying at a hostel and went on a bar crawl because I didn’t know anyone and wanted to meet new people but, on the night, ended up spraining my knee badly enough to the point that I needed to wear a compression bandage and use a cane for about two weeks afterward as I danced too hard. I’m thankful immediately after I sprained my knee I assumed I could walk off the not too bad pain because it wasn’t that far from where I was staying and did so, easing myself into my bunk bed and dropping off very quickly to sleep. I’m thankful that the next morning my knee had nearly doubled in size and I tried to get up for my first leak of the day I discovered that attempted to bend my knee was surprisingly excruciating now that I was no longer drunk. I’m thankful that after sorting it out with my pathetic Spanish at a chemist around the corner, with the help of a patient and good humoured woman who worked there, I had my knee in a bandage and a cane to walk on. I’m thankful that I, in my effortful way of planning all of my holidays (must maximise time or else I will die!!!), had already decided ahead of time that I would be going to The Magic Fountain even if I wasn’t walking properly. I’m thankful that I climed and climbed the stairs in my own slow way and was sweating a lot by the time I reached the top. This was when the sky began to move into dusk with its magic purples and pinks, making the scene below look filmic.

I’m thankful that typical to many punk children he wore black nail polish and a black beanie and kept his hair long, slightly scruffy. He also kept to himself a lot and never made direct eye contact, spoke in long slightly breathless run on sentences, communicating the sense that his brain on occasion moved move too fast for his mouth to keep up. I remembered the name of one band, Clowns, then listened to I’m Not Right and was immediately obsessed. I’m thankful that the next school day I mentioned to this student that I listened to it and he excitedly rattled off another list of local punk bands. He did this all while I was on yard duty, walking slowly next to me when I went along my route in my safety vest.

I left my workshop open during lunchtime sometimes so kids could come in and chill out if they wanted to. No phones allowed. This kid came in and another punk girl/friend of his and we yammered about this album and he noticed I had a Bluetooth speaker. In high school environments these are rare magical machines that are very exciting, and it is especially exciting if your teacher is open to playing music of your choice on it. I suggested listening to it, a slightly rebellious thing for me to do as I was at the time working underneath a boss whom many would refer to as a control freak. She was not on site for the moment so I put I’m Not Right on. When the opening lines of Awake came on we all started nodding slowly and clenching our fists a little and it felt like we had an understanding for a moment.

21 March

I’m thankful for when I do decently at mini golf and I’m thankful for early birthday gifts and I’m thankful for the phrase “platonic sugar daddy”.

Mara Lakshmi

I’m thankful for when I do decently at mini golf and I’m thankful for early birthday gifts and I’m thankful for the phrase “platonic sugar daddy”. I’m thankful for when I get a chance to eat charred corn on a stick. I’m thankful for when I teach lessons and previously seemingly disengaged students seem to symbiotically feed off of my enthusiasm and feel enthusiastic about their own work. I’m thankful for brutalism. I’m thankful for the salad I bought for lunch that costs less than 3 dollars. I’m thankful for the sensation of being well rested.

I’m thankful for when I solve my problems on my own. I’m thankful for overnight conditioner and I’m thankful to have found some pleasure in brushing my hair before bed. I’m thankful for dowels.

I’m thankful that our neighbour has started- somewhat contemptuously- referring to my housemates partner as Top Knot (lol) ever since he mowed the front lawn at 10am once. I’m thankful that in the wake of my impending move the house has been feeling rather full- three humans, three dogs and two cats which I’ve been escaping by reading outside in the dark under a blanket. I’m thankful that last night despite the cold I still did it then (I’m thankful that I’d forgotten I’d read The will to change by bell hooks many years ago and am joyfully rereading it). I’m thankful that top knot came out to the backyard and sat down on the other end of the verandah with a little pipe that I, to my surprise, thought he was using to smoke tobacco like in the olden days. I have a fascination with smoking technology (the first pipes people used to smoke from were made from reeds!) and asked him about it. I realised I’d seen it a million times before- those small cheap popular ones that are rough as guts on the inhale. I’m thankful that he offered me a hit and despite my attempts to smoke less I had a little, more to be polite than anything else.

I’m thankful that we chatted idly for a while. My housemate had come outside too and said to top knot “it’s time for bed!” and we all went inside. I’m thankful to have finally finished White Teeth and I’m thankful for this fragment:

We are so convinced of the goodness of ourselves, and the goodness of our love, we cannot bear to believe that there might be something more worthy of love than us, more worthy of worship. Greetings cards routinely tell us everybody deserves love. No. Everybody deserves clean water. Not everybody deserves love all the time.

11 March

I’m thankful for the gnarly noisy miner fight I witnessed in the backyard last night.

Mara Lakshmi

I’m thankful for the gnarly noisy miner fight I witnessed in the backyard last night. I was sitting outside reading and trying to distract myself from the fact that I had work the next day. I heard a flurry of wild screaming from a cluster of noisy miners. They moved in a tangled bunch, almost as if their legs were tied together in an airborne rat king (“noisy miner king” sounds like a description of a shitty member of any royal family). They flew in a similar fashion, weighted down by each other and with very little control. I first heard a thump on the wodden fence, a sound not dissimilar to a small dog throwing itself against it. The pile of miners, now on the ground under the clothesline, threw themselves against the garage door. It thundered. I was sitting on the verandah and bolted up.

I moved closer. They hadn’t noticed me just yet, and I tried not to swear out loud despite being very surprised. There were five birds in the pile. What was happening was that four were trying to kill a larger five. He struggled under the grip of the four, straining his wings and legs wildly as they stood on him. Legs moving like a dying bug in its last throes. While the four were trying their best to hold him down, every so often one would jump off his body in order to peck and kick savagely at his head, seemingly trying to break his neck. I heard a crunch of bird bones; this seemed to come from his wing. My stomach lurched and I understood that death in our backyard was very possible for this animal.

I moved closer in horror and fascination. They saw and heard me coming. They separated immediately, and the big injured one used the chance to fly up very quickly and somewhat jerkily. The others weren’t too far off, though, and wanted to finish the job. They, relatively unhurt, snatched their victim mid-air and repositioned him in the centre of the backyard. The struggling, kicking, pecking, and screaming started up again. This didn’t faze him, though. He still had a good amount of fight in him, and I wanted to see him free, or at least avoid dying tonight. I followed them, and I was close enough for them to scatter. The attackers didn’t give up yet and instead flew up to the garage roof, waiting for me to leave them be. While this happened, the injured one flew across to the other side of the yard and shot into a tree after hitting the fence, moving off into the distance. The rest, watching this, seemed to give up. They flittered off. My heart was racing a little and my brain played out the sound of bird bone crunching.

I can't exactly explain it, but that’s what trying to stay sober is like sometimes.

06 March

I’m thankful for the free lunch we got after I mentioned to the owner, who was serving us, that I was a shareholder.

Mara Lakshmi

I’m thankful for the free lunch we got after I mentioned to the owner, who was serving us, that I was a shareholder. I’m thankful that recently writing reports has been more enjoyable because I give myself permission to include one minor flowery phrase in the 3-4 sentences I get. I’m thankful for tiny artistic licences (lol). I’m thankful that I slept so badly last night that while two coworkers were talking next to me and I was meant to be doing something on my computer I straight up nodded off right next to them for a few seconds. I’m thankful for leftovers. I’m thankful to hope for good sleep tonight. I usually do this at the 24 hour gym near my house but I’ve been finding the lights, music and surprising crowdedness of the building uncomfortable and overstimulating that early in the morning just recently. I found a good nature reserve instead, a wooded area with a path running through it that surrounded a large lake. I’m thankful that I got there when it was still pitch black and as I walked a few metres in I realised this place had no lights anywhere and it felt scary so I settled for an extremely short jog. I decided on squats because it felt like if a serial killer/rapist jumped out of the bushes to attack me, I’d be more ready to run than if I were doing some other exercise.

I was listening to a podcast and spaced out, looking at the moon. The clouds made the sky look like fan folded paper, each crease a ripple beginning at its centre. I walked closer to the lake. It was windless and the water was still. I walked to the pier. The ducks huddled under the pier scattered at hearing me move above them. They dispersed into the water, quacking wildly. I felt like a bit of an asshole for ruining their sleep but seeing it made my day feel worth waking up for. The sun still hadn’t risen. Their dark feathered bodies shimmered on the water. By then I’d walked further than I’d planned to but it felt fine as I could hear the next door residential street waking up. Lights turning on, doors creaking.

I stilled for a moment watchin the water, then began walking back to my car. The podcast was reaching it’s conclusion and I was pondering it and still feeling lifted by the ducks on the lake. The sun was about to rise but hadn’t just yet; the faintest orange glow suffused on the otherwise dark horizon. I didn’t notice the older man walking in the opposite direction until he was within arms reach, then immediately jumped and made a noise. I’m an expert at disapearing into my own brain. “Holy shit!” I gasped. “You fucking scared me dude”. We were both wearing all black, which surely didn’t help.
”Oh! Well, good morning” he said, laughing. We were both laughing, then. “I just wanted to say good morning”
I waved my arm in some sort of way. Neither of us stopped. I lost my way on the way back but not for long. I was no longer worried about getting raped and murdered. I know this fear is statistically ridiculous, but part of what builds fear is culture. Culture doesn’t care about stats. By the time I made it back to my car a pair of young women had started walking on the path and it all felt normal again.

I’m thankful that I found my ereader again after losing it for the third time and I’m thankful for cold water and I’m thankful for all the opportunities I have to look at unobstructed sky. I’m thankful for when I connect with students and have an opportunity to make them feel good about something positive they do. I’m thankful for salsa.

15th February

Thankful for small mercies, like for the time I was having an absolutely awful day at work ended up CRYING in front of my class.

Mara Lakshmi

Thankful for small mercies, like for the time I was having an absolutely awful day at work ended up CRYING in front of my class. The students were stunned into awkward silence because there is nothing more traumatising to a student than their teacher expressing any kind of emotional vulnerability (lol). I’m thankful for the student who wordlessly, carefully, handed me a box of tissues as I bawled and hiccuped. (I’m thankful for humiliations that ferment into comedies through time)

I’m thankful for all the technology I got to play with today and I’m thankful for CAD. I’m thankful for the student who knows the tech we work with very well and has become my unofficial teaching assistant.

I’m thankful for the massive amounts of tea I’ve gone through today. I’m thankful for the concept of resilience and I’m thankful that while I usually only ever listen to calm classical music at work in order to get shit done when I’m in the office I needed a Four Tet break. I’m thankful that Two Thousand and Seventeen made me type very fast, somehow, a piece of information that goes against the current data trend of “Mel can’t get work done when she’s listening to anything other than easily ignorable classical music or silence”.

I’m thankful that instead of going to the gym I took a walk before work this morning and even before the sun rose I could see the damage the storm had done on a great deal of trees in the park I went to. I’m thankful that it was dark enough that I tripped and nearly fell over a large branch that had fallen over the footpath. I’m thankful for the cold and the silence that exists in the very early morning, when most people are still asleep. I’m thankful that I found a good spot to watch the sunrise on the way back. I’m thankful that it felt better to take a leisurely walk instead of my usual, even if my usual is better for me in the long run.

I’m thankful for the time this week I walked through a room briefly and heard a female coworker say “Is there a term for when you gaslight yourself?” and I said “Yes. It’s called the effect of patriarchy that works to the point where you don’t even need some man to invalidate your experience because you’ve been taught to do it yourself”. I’m thankful to have done a good amount to earn the reputation of a ranty feminist killjoy.

I’m thankful for the lipstick and compact mirror that says the words “hot dogs for all” that I keep at my desk. I’m thankful for the leftovers from dinner with my mum on the weekend that I’ve been eating this week. I’m thankful for the small dramas that happen between the cats when they play too rough. I’m thankful for when you meet someone new and find you have a very similar sense of humour. I’m thankful for cold Earl grey. I’m thankful for comfortable silences, and I’m thankful for the role of the mirror neuron system during mutual interaction, which is why eye contact feels so good sometimes. I’m thankful for when NB and Ts baby kept staring at me without my knowledge and T said You have an admirer. I’m thankful for all I’ve learned about babies in the past several months due to the two new nephews I have. I’m thankful for when the cardio I try to do pays off in situations that aren’t in a gym. I’m thankful for the colour black. I’m thankful that this morning I was meant to go to the gym but the heat had made sleep difficult so I instead used the hour to snooze, which I needed.

I’m thankful for the frozen mango pieces I had for dessert with ice cream on the weekend. I’m thankful for more good lines from White Teeth:

... Clara was a teenage girl like any other; the object of her passion was only an accessory to the passion itself, a passion that through its long suppression was now asserting itself with volcanic necessity.

I’m thankful for volcanic necessity. I’m thankful that during the “meeting” today it was just me and another person who was resigning at the end of the week, so we really just shot the breeze for 45 minutes, and she told me about her young child. I’m thankful that it felt nice to connect with an adult at work, which so rarely happens for me. I’m thankful we spoke about literacy levels and the role of public education in adulthood outcomes (when you look at the data on an international level, most people having access to public education is overall a good thing despite the many flaws in the system, and I’m convinced that this uplifting piece of information is what keeps most of us here).

I’m thankful for the big salad I ate for dinner. I’m thankful for the Contemporary American Poultry episode of Community, and I’m thankful for good writing.
