And yet, for most of our lives, this country has exercised a completely ridiculous amount of influence over what happens to the other 95.7%.

It wasn’t because we conquered everybody and it wasn’t because everybody particularly liked us.

And it certainly wasn’t because everyone spent the last 80 years thinking, You know who should really be in charge of things? The Americans.

We did it because after World War II, the United States helped build an extraordinarily clever system.

And then we put ourselves in the middle of it.

We helped create the United Nations, the IMF, the World Bank and eventually the modern global trading system. We built NATO and a web of security alliances stretching across Europe and Asia. We stationed troops around the world. We protected shipping lanes. We opened our enormous consumer market to other countries.

And, most importantly, we made the United States the place everyone wanted to plug into.

We had a package.

And it was one hell of a package.

This is the part a surprising number of Americans never understood:

We weren’t giving all of that away. We were buying something.

Influence.

For decades, foreign governments accumulated dollars. Central banks bought our debt. Countries hosted our military. Allies shared intelligence with us. Governments cooperated with our sanctions. International institutions operated largely within a system America helped design.

When Washington said, “We need everybody on board,” quite often everybody got on board.

Not always.

But astonishingly often for a country containing four people out of every hundred on Earth.

That was the deal.

And if, until approximately 90 seconds ago, you thought NATO was basically a charity we ran for Europeans, foreign aid was us throwing bags of money out of airplanes, trade deficits meant another country had “beaten” us, tariffs were taxes foreigners paid, and alliances were friendships where we inexplicably picked up the check…

Congratulations.

You may be a low-information voter.

Because you were looking at the maintenance bill without realizing we owned the building.

And here is where Donald Trump enters the story.

Trump seems never to have understood this system.

Or perhaps worse, he understands it and thinks it is disposable.

He looks at an alliance and sees an invoice.

He looks at NATO and asks who’s paying enough.

He looks at a trade deficit and concludes someone ripped us off.

He looks at foreign aid and sees money that could have stayed home.

He looks at international institutions and sees constraints on America instead of institutions through which America has exercised disproportionate influence for 80 years.

It’s like inheriting a casino, noticing that free drinks cost $4 million a year and screaming:

STOP GIVING AWAY THE FUCKING DRINKS!

Sure.

You’ve saved $4 million.

Unfortunately, everyone is now gambling at the casino across the street.

And we’re starting to see that happen.

U.S. foreign aid plunged by roughly $26 billion in Trump’s first year back in office, to its lowest inflation-adjusted level in more than two decades.

International confidence in the United States has fallen sharply. In Pew’s latest 36-country survey, the median percentage expressing confidence in Trump to handle world affairs was just 23%, and the percentage of people who consider the United States a reliable partner has fallen substantially in many longtime allied countries.

The 2026 Global Soft Power Index still ranks America number one—which is important—but America also suffered the largest decline of any of the 193 countries measured.

Canada, perhaps our closest friend on Earth for generations, is now actively looking for ways to reduce its dependence on the United States as its trade relationship with us deteriorates.

European countries are building more of their own defense capability.

Asian allies are openly asking how dependable the American security guarantee really is.

Canada and Europe are actively recruiting scientists and researchers whose work has become less secure in the United States.

And countries everywhere are learning an extremely important lesson:

Depending too much on America is now a geopolitical risk.

That may be Trump’s greatest contribution to the world.

He is teaching everyone how to live without us.

And THAT is where the potentially permanent damage comes in.

Because another president can eliminate a tariff.

Another Congress can restore foreign aid.

Another administration can call Europe and say, “Sorry about all that. We’re back.”

But you cannot call the president of France and say:

“Okay, you can forget the part where you learned that the United States might elect another guy who threatens to abandon you.”

You can’t unteach Canada that it needs markets besides ours.

You can’t tell Europe to dismantle the military capability it just spent hundreds of billions building because we’re reliable again.

You can’t tell companies that spent billions redesigning supply chains to please put everything back.

You can’t tell central banks that started considering alternatives to the dollar that they should stop thinking about it.

And you can’t tell scientists who moved their laboratories, families and research programs overseas, “Never mind. Come back.”

This is how great powers lose power.

Usually not in one dramatic afternoon where someone lowers the American flag and China raises theirs while ominous music plays.

It happens gradually.

Other countries hedge.

Then they diversify.

Then they build alternatives.

Then one day the indispensable country discovers that it isn’t quite so indispensable anymore.

And let’s be very clear: America hasn’t lost everything.

The dollar still accounts for roughly 57% of disclosed global foreign-exchange reserves. Our capital markets remain enormous. Our military is formidable. Our universities, technology companies, culture and scientific institutions remain extraordinary. America remains, by many measures, the most influential country on Earth.

Trump hasn’t burned the house down.

He’s doing something potentially much more consequential.

He’s convincing the neighbors they should probably stop storing all their valuables in it.

That’s the part low-information voters miss.

American global power was never simply the size of our military or our economy.

It was the military…

plus the dollar…

plus the alliances…

plus the markets…

plus the universities…

plus the technology…

plus the institutions…

plus the culture…

plus the credibility…

plus several dozen countries believing that when America gave its word, there was a pretty good chance America would still mean it after the next election.

That’s the machine.

That’s what generations of presidents—Republican and Democratic—spent 80 years maintaining.

It wasn’t perfect. Sometimes it was hypocritical. Sometimes we abused it. Sometimes we did genuinely terrible things with it.

But holy shit, did it benefit us.

It allowed 4% of the world’s population to have a wildly disproportionate say in how the other 96% conducted its business.

And Donald Trump looked at the most valuable geopolitical asset any nation has ever inherited and apparently concluded:

We’re getting screwed.

If you voted to dismantle that system because you didn’t know what it was doing for you…

I’m afraid I have some bad news about that low-information voter test.

The man has been elected President of the United States twice.

That is an almost unimaginably difficult thing to accomplish. You don’t have to admire him to acknowledge it.

And throughout American history, we’ve studied successful people and tried to figure out what we could learn from them.

Lincoln taught us perseverance. Benjamin Franklin taught us curiosity, discipline and self-improvement.

So fair is fair.

Maybe we should stop being so partisan about this and ask: What are Donald Trump’s rules for success?

More importantly, shouldn’t we be teaching them to our children?

I’ve given this some thought.

Here they are.

1. Pick the right parents.

This is crucial.

A lot of young people waste decades trying to build wealth from scratch when apparently there is another option: have your father provide a substantial head start and spend the rest of your life explaining how self-made you are.

Kids, work smarter, not harder.

2. Never admit you lost.

This is an enormous life hack.

Most people lose something and think:

Well, shit. I lost.

Terrible attitude.

A winner understands that losing is simply winning before everybody else has accepted your version of events.

Lose an election?

You won.

Lose a court case?

Rigged.

Lose money?

Accounting.

Eventually reality gets tired and goes home.

3. Never apologize. Ever.

This is where normal people screw up.

They say things like:

“I was wrong.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I shouldn’t have done that.”

Complete waste of energy.

A much more successful approach is to insist you were right, attack whoever noticed you were wrong, and then demand an apology from them.

That last part is particularly important.

4. Loyalty is everything.

Specifically, other people’s loyalty to you.

Your loyalty to them should remain flexible depending on usefulness, ratings and whether they recently said something nice about you on television.

Children should learn this distinction early.

It will save a lot of confusion later.

5. If you get caught, attack the person who caught you.

This may be one of the great Trump innovations.

Don’t explain.

Don’t defend.

For God’s sake, don’t reflect.

Attack the referee.

The judge is corrupt.

The journalist is fake.

The prosecutor is deranged.

The witness is a liar.

The former employee was always completely incompetent, which does admittedly raise the question of why you hired him, but nobody has time for that.

The important thing is:

Never let the conversation remain focused on what you actually did.

6. Confidence is often more useful than knowledge.

Most of us were raised completely wrong.

We thought you were supposed to learn about something and then become confident.

Trump discovered you can simply eliminate Step One.

Walk into every room already certain that you know more than the generals, economists, scientists, doctors, lawyers and whoever else happens to be standing there.

Say it loudly enough and, remarkably, millions of people will conclude:

Well, he certainly sounds sure.

7. Shame is for losers.

This one may be the secret sauce.

Think about how many things you haven’t done in your life because at some point you thought:

Jesus Christ, people would think I’m an asshole.

Now imagine that thought simply never occurred to you.

The possibilities are endless.

8. Never just sell a product when you can sell yourself.

Buildings.

Steaks.

Wine.

Sneakers.

Crypto.

Bibles.

Politics.

Grievance.

Ideally everything should eventually become merchandise.

There is no human emotion so sacred that somebody, somewhere, cannot slap your name on it and charge $59.99.

9. If something goes badly, simply announce that it went extremely well.

This is probably my favorite.

Most people wait for the results before deciding whether something succeeded.

Again: amateur thinking.

The Trump method is much more efficient.

Announce victory first.

Explain that everyone who disagrees is dishonest.

Congratulate yourself.

Then become angry that other people aren’t congratulating you enthusiastically enough.

This eliminates an enormous amount of uncertainty.

And finally…

BONUS RULE #10: Find a very large number of dumbshits willing to believe you.

This is absolutely essential.

You can lie, contradict yourself, screw things up, blame everybody else and declare victory over the smoking wreckage — but none of it works without an audience willing to say:

“Yep. Sounds right to me.”

Better still, convince them that anybody pointing out the obvious is actually their enemy.

Now you’ve really got something.

Because once people become emotionally invested in believing you, they will do something extraordinary:

They will defend your failures more passionately than you do.

They’ll explain what you really meant.

They’ll tell everyone your obvious loss was actually a brilliant strategic victory.

They’ll insist the exact thing they were furious about when the other side did it is suddenly an act of genius.

And the more ridiculous the bullshit becomes, the more committed they become to swallowing it — because admitting they were conned now means admitting something about themselves.

That’s the magic.

The greatest grift isn’t getting people to believe your bullshit. It’s getting them to make believing your bullshit part of their identity.

At that point, congratulations.

You don’t have supporters anymore.

You have unpaid salespeople.

So yes.

Donald Trump absolutely has lessons to teach our children about success.

I’m just not sure any of them are lessons you’d want your children to learn.

It has also been very good to me personally. I’ve thrived under it. So this isn’t sour grapes from someone angry that his neighbor has a nicer car.

But come on. It’s broken.

An absurd amount of wealth has accumulated at the very top, while millions of people who work full-time are one medical problem or missed paycheck away from disaster. And every so often the entire system drives itself into a wall and suddenly the same people who lecture everyone else about personal responsibility need rescuing by the government.

Apparently capitalism is fiercely independent right up until capitalism needs a few trillion dollars.

The point isn’t that everyone should have the same amount of money. They shouldn’t. The point is that whatever economic system we have must work well enough for everyone to have a stake in keeping it.

If enough people decide the system offers them nothing—no security, no opportunity and no realistic hope of improving their lives—they eventually stop respecting the system.

That’s how you get civil unrest. It isn’t complicated.

You might hate the idea of giving a penny to someone who didn’t earn it. Fine. But refusing to maintain a basic social floor doesn’t save us money. It costs us far more in emergency healthcare, homelessness, crime, addiction, prisons, lost productivity and children growing up without proper food or opportunity.

Congratulations. You saved a dollar and created a ten-dollar problem.

We need to be adults about this.

If we want to keep capitalism—and I do—we have to regulate it properly. We have to stop monopolies, protect genuine competition and quit allowing giant companies to keep the profits when things go well and hand us the bill when they don’t.

We also need universal healthcare, as most other wealthy democracies already provide. Remarkably, they have managed this without the government confiscating everyone’s toaster.

And we need a safety net strong enough to ensure that people don’t fall into absolute poverty. Particularly children. A child cannot “take personal responsibility” for being born poor. Kids need food, healthcare, housing and an education. That’s not radical socialism. It’s basic civilization.

Markets are useful tools. They are not gods, and they are certainly not known for their parenting skills.

The choice isn’t between completely unregulated capitalism and communism. That’s an argument designed for people who think bumper stickers are public policy.

The real choice is between a capitalism mature enough to correct its failures and one that becomes so unequal, unstable and openly rigged that people eventually reject it altogether.

I want capitalism to survive.

Which is precisely why I think we need to fix the damn thing.

The markets were never really the problem.

I was.

If you’ve followed my trading journey, you’ve probably heard me talk about something called tilt. It’s one of the most fascinating psychological phenomena I’ve ever experienced.

The term comes from pinball. When players got frustrated, they’d physically shake the machine, hoping to influence the ball. Shake it too hard and the machine would flash one word: TILT.

Game over.

Poker players adopted the term years later. Traders eventually stole it from poker because, well… traders are like that.

Tilt is what happens when your emotions hijack your decision-making.

I’ve spent thousands of hours learning to trade.

I’ve built rules. Written checklists. Journaled my mistakes. I’ve even written essays explaining why my rules exist and why they’re absolutely non-negotiable.

I can explain—in painful detail—why every trade must justify itself before I enter it… and keep earning the right to remain open.

I know why revenge trading destroys accounts.

I know why losses have to stay small.

I know why I have to stop trading once I stop seeing the market objectively.

If you met me for coffee an hour before a trading session, I’d happily debate anyone who thought those rules didn’t matter.

Then I lose a couple of trades.

And suddenly…

I’m the world’s biggest hypocrite.

The exact same brain that created those rules starts dismantling them.

“This setup is different.”

“I just need to give it a little more room.”

“This isn’t revenge trading.”

“I can’t stop now because then the losses become real.”

An hour earlier I could have given a TED Talk on why every one of those thoughts was complete bullshit. Now I’m giving closing arguments for the defense.

Nothing about the market changed. Only my emotional state.

That’s the part I find so fascinating.

My brain doesn’t stop reasoning.

It changes jobs.

Instead of asking, “What’s true?” it starts asking, “How can I justify what I already want to do?”

The prosecutor quietly resigns.

The defense attorney takes over.

Same brain.

Same IQ.

Entirely different mission.

And here’s the maddening part.

While I’m on tilt, you cannot reason with me.

My brain becomes incredibly creative.

It manufactures explanations. It invents exceptions. It rewrites principles I was passionately defending just an hour earlier.

It’s like my emotional brain locks my rational brain in the trunk of the car, steals the keys, and takes off doing 95 mph while blasting AC/DC.

Afterward?

I can see every mistake almost instantly.

During it?

Hopeless.

Which got me wondering…

What if this isn’t just a trading problem?

What if it’s a human problem?

There’s one more thing about tilt that I almost forgot.

It actually gets worse when someone tries to help me.

My trading partner will look at the exact same screen I’m looking at and calmly say, “Mike… stop. You’re on tilt.”

You’d think I’d be grateful.

Instead… I get defensive.

Because in that moment, it doesn’t feel like he’s questioning my trade. It feels like he’s questioning me. Suddenly I’m no longer defending a position in the market.

I’m defending my competence.

My judgment.

My identity as a trader.

The conversation quietly stops being about evidence. It becomes about protecting who I believe I am. And once that happens, changing my mind becomes almost impossible.

That made me wonder whether the same thing happens in politics.

Maybe when someone criticizes MAGA, many supporters don’t hear, “I disagree with your politics.” Maybe they hear, “You’re a bad person.”

If that’s how it feels, then every challenge to a belief becomes an attack on identity.

And once your identity is under attack, your brain doesn’t ask, “Is this true?”

It asks, “How do I defend myself?”

What if they’re not immune to facts?

What if they’re on political tilt?

Think about it.

Imagine spending years immersed in a media ecosystem that constantly tells you your country is being stolen…

Your culture is disappearing.

Crime is exploding.

Immigrants are invading.

Your children are under attack.

This election is the last one that matters.

Every day.

Every hour.

Every commercial break.

At some point, maybe your emotional brain never really clocks out.

And if that’s true, trying to argue with someone in that state may be about as productive as explaining bankroll management to a poker player who’s just lost six all-ins in a row.

The facts aren’t necessarily the problem.

The emotional state is.

To be clear, this isn’t an excuse.

When I’m on tilt, I’m still responsible for every terrible trade I make. Nobody forced me to click the mouse.

Likewise, we’re all responsible for the beliefs we adopt and the choices we make.

But understanding irrational behavior isn’t the same thing as excusing it.

In fact, it’s usually the first step toward changing it.

Maybe I’m completely wrong.

Maybe this analogy falls apart.

But if I’m right, then arguing with someone on political tilt is a lot like arguing with me on trading tilt.

Neither of us lacks intelligence.

Neither of us suddenly forgot the facts.

We’re simply using our intelligence for a different purpose: not to discover what’s true, but to defend what we’ve already decided must be true.

And that may be the most dangerous thing our brains are capable of.

Because I’ve met that guy before.

He was staring back at me in the mirror.

The Nigerian prince who somehow can’t spell “Nigeria.”

The breathtakingly beautiful heiress who accidentally texts you instead of her financial advisor and, through an astonishing series of coincidences, decides you’re the one person on Earth she wants to discuss cryptocurrency with.

The email from PayPal that begins, “Dear Valued Costumer.”

There are more red flags than had the Soviet Union.

Which raises an interesting question.

If these criminal organizations are so sophisticated, why are so many of their scams so laughably bad?

Because they’re not trying to fool everyone.

They’re trying to fool the right people.

Think about it.

If you’re the kind of person who notices the spelling mistakes, questions the absurd story, or wonders why a Swedish supermodel has chosen you as her financial confidant… congratulations. You’ve just saved them a lot of time.

You were never the customer.

Those ridiculous red flags are actually a filter.

They’re designed to weed out skeptical people before the scammer invests hours—or sometimes weeks—building a relationship with someone who’s never going to send them a dime.

Once I learned that, I couldn’t unsee it.

What looks like incompetence is actually efficiency.

And that’s when I fell down the rabbit hole.

Many of the largest scam operations today aren’t being run by some teenager in his parents’ basement.

They’re run like businesses.

In parts of Southeast Asia, there are sprawling compounds employing thousands of people. Tragically, many of those “employees” aren’t there voluntarily. They answered fake job ads, had their passports confiscated, and are forced to spend their days scamming strangers under threats of violence.

It’s industrialized fraud.

And like every successful industry, it spends a lot of time figuring out its customers.

They study psychology.

They A/B test messages.

They learn what makes people trust, panic, hope, or act without thinking.

Every failed scam teaches them something.

Every successful one teaches them even more.

And then they run the next experiment.

Now here’s the part that really got my attention.

Over the next couple of decades, roughly $124 trillion is expected to change hands as Baby Boomers pass their wealth to Generation X and Millennials.

One hundred and twenty-four trillion dollars.

Let that number bounce around your head for a second.

If you were running a criminal enterprise, what would you do?

Ignore the largest transfer of private wealth in human history?

Or build an entire industry around intercepting as much of it as possible?

I think we all know the answer.

The part that worries me isn’t today’s scams.

It’s tomorrow’s.

Every victim, before becoming a victim, believed they were too smart to fall for one.

“I’d never send money to a stranger.”

“I’d never click that link.”

“I’d never be that gullible.”

But the most successful scams were never really about intelligence.

They’re about timing.

The recent widow who’s suddenly alone.

The retiree worried that inflation is going to outlive their savings.

The lonely man who can’t believe someone that beautiful actually wants to talk to him.

The young investor convinced they’ve finally found the shortcut everyone else missed.

Nobody wakes up thinking, “Today I’d like to be scammed.”

They wake up lonely.

Or grieving.

Or scared.

Or hopeful.

The scam simply arrives on exactly the right day.

Now add artificial intelligence to that equation.

It won’t send one scam to ten million people.

It will send ten million different scams.

It will know where you live.

What you post on Facebook.

Who you vote for.

Whether you recently retired.

Whether your spouse passed away.

What podcasts you listen to.

What stocks you own.

What medical condition you’ve been Googling at two in the morning.

It won’t try to manipulate people.

It will try to manipulate you.

Your fears.

Your dreams.

Your insecurities.

Your blind spots.

Your scam.

So maybe the biggest mistake we can make is believing we’re too smart to become victims.

Because almost every victim thought exactly the same thing.

Humility may turn out to be our best defense.

Not because we’re gullible.

But because somewhere, someone is spending all day, every day, trying to invent the one scam that’s good enough to fool us.

And with AI…

I’m not sure that’s a bet I’d be willing to make.

We act like we’re watching history.

We’re not.

We’re inside the laboratory, and the rest of the world has had front-row seats for almost 250 years—watching us, measuring us, taking notes.

Every time America invents something extraordinary—the Constitution, venture capital, the airplane, the semiconductor, the internet, Silicon Valley, AI—the observers nod approvingly.

“Excellent,” they say. “We’ll have some of that.”

Then we do something spectacularly dumb—healthcare, college tuition that requires a lifetime subscription to anxiety, mass incarceration—and they politely pass.

The developed world isn’t anti-American. Quite the opposite. They’ve spent decades copying our best ideas.

The difference is that they don’t stop there.

They copy each other’s improvements too. They keep tweaking the recipe. And that’s how the students eventually catch the teacher.

Take education.

We still have many of the greatest universities on Earth. If you’re one of the brightest people alive, there’s a good chance you’ll study here.

But by the time our own kids get there, they’re no longer leading the pack in math or science, while countries across Asia quietly turn out generations of engineers and scientists.

Infrastructure?

We built the interstate highway system.

Now I land in airports overseas and think, “Did they build this yesterday?”

Then I come home and drive over bridges held together by optimism and federal grant applications.

Healthcare?

We spend more than anyone and live shorter lives than most wealthy countries.

That’s a hell of a business model.

Quality of life?

We work longer hours, take less vacation, get less parental leave, retire later, and rank behind many of our peers in happiness.

Then we invent meditation apps to help us survive the lifestyle we built.

Create the problem. Sell the startup that treats the symptom.

Very on-brand.

And yet we’re still unbelievably good at inventing things.

The rest of the world just gets to cherry-pick the breakthroughs without inheriting all of our self-inflicted wounds.

Of course, if you’re running the world’s biggest experiment, eventually people want more than a seat.

They want a hand on the controls.

Our allies lobby us. China studies us. Russia hunts for cracks to exploit. Corporations buy influence. Social media figured out that outrage is one hell of a business model.

None of them need to coordinate.

They don’t even have to like each other.

They just all benefit from the same thing:

An America paying more attention to itself than to what’s happening around it.

Think about how much of our national conversation goes to things that won’t matter in twenty years—a logo change, a celebrity gaffe, a culture-war skirmish over a coffee cup or a mascot.

Millions of us pick sides as if civilization itself hangs in the balance.

Meanwhile, somewhere else, someone is building the next chip factory, educating another million engineers, and planning fifty years ahead while we argue about something we’ll forget by Labor Day.

Great powers rarely disappear overnight.

They lose their edge slowly—not because they stop producing brilliant people or run out of resources, but because they become so distracted that they stop fixing the things that made them exceptional in the first place.

The greatest strength of the American experiment was never that we got everything right.

It was that we admitted when we were wrong, argued about it, fixed it, and moved on.

Lately, we’ve replaced problem-solving with team sports.

Everything is tribal. Everything is existential. Everything is somebody else’s fault.

It makes you wonder what the observers are writing in their notebooks.

Maybe just this:

Keep a great nation fighting itself long enough, and eventually it stops paying attention to the experiment.

Someday, some historian may close the file and write one final line:

The Great American Experiment.

Remarkable while it lasted.

If you were an ordinary kid, there was an excellent chance you’d eventually discover you were actually a Jedi. Or a secret agent. Or a superhero, an astronaut, a millionaire inventor — or at the very least, someone whose car talked.

Every story carried the same message: You’re special. Adventure is just around the corner. The universe has big plans for you.

Fantastic. I was all in.

Then one day, without warning, the adults changed the script.

“Okay, here’s how life actually works.” You’ll get a good education, then a good job. You’ll have a boss. You’ll attend meetings about future meetings, answer emails, and compare health insurance plans. You’ll eventually become the kind of person who has strong opinions about lawn fertilizer or air fryers. Then you’ll get married and have kids of your own, whom you’ll raise on stories about Jedi and superheroes and secret agents — before sitting them down to explain dental deductibles.

What? That’s the plan?

Where’s the superhero in that story? When exactly was I supposed to become a British spy who goes around introducing himself by his last name? At what point were scientists going to replace my legs with bionic ones? How long was I expected to wait before my talking car showed up? And how, after everything I’d been promised, was I not going to Tatooine?

Also, this whole “good job” thing apparently involved having a boss who told me what to do all day. Which sounded suspiciously like having a mother who told me to clean my room, except now I had to commute. No, thank you.

This wasn’t growing up. It was a bait-and-switch.

They raised us on galaxies, secret missions, hidden treasure, exotic countries, mysterious strangers, and ordinary people discovering extraordinary destinies — then handed us employee handbooks and said, “Don’t forget to increase your 401(k) contribution.”

Honestly, I think that’s why adults never completely outgrow being kids.

We still love superhero movies. We still buy lightsabers. We still secretly hope the next trip, the next opportunity, the next chapter will feel like the adventure we were promised. Because once you’ve spent your childhood believing something extraordinary was just around the corner, it’s hard to let that go.

Maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe the adults got one part wrong. They taught us that adventure belonged to children. What they accidentally taught us is that every kid grows up expecting to be the main character.

And after raising us on Luke Skywalker, James Bond, Steve Austin, and Michael Knight, they really shouldn’t have been surprised that we didn’t grow up wanting to become NPCs.

Research using what method?

Watching YouTube videos isn’t research.

Reading Facebook posts isn’t research.

Googling until you find a guy with wraparound sunglasses sitting in the front seat of an F-150 telling you NASA has been lying to us isn’t research.

Research begins by trying to prove yourself wrong.

Which is inconvenient because proving yourself right is a lot more fun.

Most people have heard of the scientific method. Surprisingly few could actually explain it.

Here’s how it works.

You observe something happening in the real world.

You come up with a possible explanation. That’s called a hypothesis.

Then comes the part most people don’t realize.

Your job isn’t to prove your hypothesis is correct.

Your job is to destroy it.

You design experiments that could prove you wrong. You make observations that might contradict your idea. You invite other scientists—people who would absolutely love to find a flaw in your work—to attack it from every angle.

If your hypothesis survives all of that, it earns credibility. If decades of evidence continue to support it, it may eventually become part of a scientific theory: a comprehensive explanation supported by an enormous body of evidence.

That’s as close to “fact” as human beings know how to get.

Not because it feels true.

Because it has survived repeated attempts to prove it false.

Science is powerful precisely because it assumes we might be wrong.

Imagine if cable news adopted that business model.

Here’s the problem.

Only about one in four American adults meet the standard researchers use for scientific literacy. Scientific literacy rises dramatically with education because education doesn’t just teach facts—it teaches how facts are established.

If you don’t understand that process, then every opinion starts to look equally valid.

Every podcast becomes a university.

Every guy with a ring light becomes a professor.

Every comment section becomes peer review.

And “doing your own research” often becomes nothing more than collecting information that confirms what you already wanted to believe.

That’s not necessarily a character flaw.

It’s a training problem.

If nobody ever taught you how knowledge is created, it’s easy to mistake confidence for evidence.

It’s easy to mistake repetition for proof.

It’s easy to think that finding five people on the internet who agree with you is the same thing as discovering the truth.

Now add one more fact.

White voters without a college degree have become one of the Republican Party’s strongest voting blocs, supporting Republican candidates by roughly two to one. Donald Trump understood this dynamic long before most political analysts did.

Not through research, obviously.

After winning the 2016 Nevada caucuses, he said:

“We won with poorly educated. I love the poorly educated.”

Most people heard that as an insult.

I heard it as a campaign strategy.

If your political success depends on persuading people to distrust scientists, universities, journalists, judges, and every institution whose job is to evaluate evidence, then the easiest audience to persuade is one that was never taught how evidence works in the first place.

The solution isn’t mocking people.

It isn’t calling them stupid.

It isn’t making them feel ashamed for not knowing something they may never have been taught.

The solution is teaching every American—not what to think, but how to think.

How to evaluate evidence.

How to change your mind.

How to tell the difference between something that feels true and something that has repeatedly been shown to be true.

Because democracy doesn’t just require free speech.

It requires citizens who know the difference between evidence and entertainment.

I am providing emergency educational services.

This is an important distinction, because one makes me sound like a man with poor impulse control, and the other makes me sound like I’m doing something worthwhile (kinda).

Every day, I open Facebook hoping to behave like a normal person. I tell myself, “Today I will simply observe. Like David Attenborough on the Serengeti.”

And for a few minutes, I succeed.

Then someone posts a picture of Ryan Gosling and calls him Ryan Reynolds, and suddenly society is depending on me.

Because if we allow one Ryan to be mislabeled, where does it end?

Jake Gyllenhaal becomes Tobey Maguire. Matt Damon becomes Mark Wahlberg. The Rock becomes a mountain. Before you know it, children are pointing at Tom Hanks and saying, “Look, it’s Mrs. Doubtfire,” which is how Rome fell.

I know I should keep scrolling. I know that many of these posts are designed specifically to lure people like me into the swamp, where we will spend 47 minutes explaining that words mean things to a man whose profile picture is a truck.

But I cannot help it.

I am cursed to relieve people of their ignorance.

Some people have a calling. Priests hear the voice of God. Artists hear the voice of beauty. I hear someone say, “Actually, tariffs are paid by China,” and my soul leaves my body, puts on reading glasses, and starts typing.

I don’t want to be this way.

I want inner peace. I want emotional maturity. I want to scroll past a sentence like “your wrong” without feeling the ancestral spirits of grammar teachers rise up behind me like the Jedi Council.

But there I am.

In the comments.

Again.

Explaining that “your” is possessive, “you’re” is a contraction, and “ur” is what cavemen wrote before inventing other vowels during the Renaissance.

People say, “Don’t feed the trolls.”

But that is very easy to say when the trolls are not standing there calling Abraham Lincoln a Democrat because he invented TikTok to defeat the Vikings.

And yes, maybe they are baiting me.

Maybe they know exactly what they’re doing.

Maybe every terrible post is just a little fishing hook with “actually…” written on it, and I am the noble trout of correction, leaping heroically into the boat of my own humiliation.

Still, I serve.

Not because I enjoy it.

Not because I think I can change minds.

But because somewhere out there, a person is about to confuse Ryan Gosling with Ryan Reynolds, democracy with dictatorship, and research with a 19-minute YouTube video made inside a Kia.

And I cannot let civilization go down like that.

Not on my watch.

Not while I have WiFi.

Is it actually worth fighting for the future of a country when you can never know what your descendants are going to do with it?

Our grandfathers fought fascism.

Some crossed oceans. Some stormed beaches. Some froze in forests. Some never came home. Some came home carrying things they never fully talked about because language wasn’t really built for that level of horror.

And the whole point — the great moral struggle of their time — was supposed to be clear.

Fascism had to be defeated.

The strongman had to be stopped.

The worship of domination had to be discredited.

The idea that one man could turn grievance into mass obedience, demonize outsiders, demand loyalty over truth, and convince ordinary people that cruelty was patriotism — that sickness had to be confronted before it consumed the world.

And for a while, we told ourselves we had learned the lesson.

We built monuments.

We made movies.

We taught schoolchildren about Hitler.

We said “never again” so many times it started to sound less like a warning and more like a slogan embroidered on a commemorative pillow.

Then 2016 happened.

And suddenly millions of Americans looked at the warning signs and decided they were negotiable.

Not all of them wanted fascism. That distinction matters. Some wanted cheaper gas. Some wanted lower taxes. Some hated Hillary. Some were lied to by a media machine that has spent decades turning resentment into a business model.

But after a certain point, innocence expires.

By now, the cruelty is not hidden. The revenge fantasies are not hidden. The authoritarian instincts are not hidden. The attacks on courts, elections, immigrants, journalists, universities, allies, prosecutors, civil servants, and the basic idea of objective truth are not hidden.

He said what he wanted to do.

Then he started doing it.

So the question becomes: if this is where we were headed anyway, why did so many people have to die in the 1940s?

Why did young men have to bleed out in Europe and the Pacific if, three generations later, their descendants were going to flirt with the same poison because groceries got expensive and a reality-TV con man promised them revenge?

Why not save everyone the trouble and let fascism win the first time?

That’s the horrible question.

And the answer, of course, is because every generation has to decide for itself whether it is worthy of the sacrifice it inherited.

Our grandfathers didn’t defeat fascism permanently. No generation ever does.

They defeated it then.

They beat it back long enough for their children and grandchildren to live in a freer world. They bought time. They gave us institutions, alliances, rights, stability, and the chance — not the guarantee — to do better.

That’s what people misunderstand about democracy.

It is not a trophy you win and put on a shelf.

It is not a family heirloom that stays polished because your grandfather was brave.

It is a living thing. And living things can decay when neglected.

What MAGA has revealed is not that the fight against fascism was pointless.

It has revealed that the fight was never finished.

The old disease did not return wearing the same uniform. It came back wrapped in flags, baptized in grievance, monetized by cable news, algorithmically boosted by social media, and sold as “real America” to people who should have known better.

And that is what makes this moment so obscene.

Not just that Trump exists. Men like Trump have always existed. History is full of damaged little kings looking for a balcony.

The obscenity is that after everything we were taught, after all the graves, after all the documentaries, after all the speeches about freedom, millions of Americans still looked at the warning signs and said, “Yes, but he hurts the people I resent.”

That is the moral collapse.

So was it worth it?

Yes.

But not because we were guaranteed to remain decent.

It was worth it because decency is only meaningful when people choose it again, under pressure, after the slogans fade and the monuments become background scenery.

Our grandfathers fought the fascism in front of them.

Now we have to fight the fascism in front of us.

Not because we know our descendants will be grateful.

Not because we know they won’t someday disappoint us beyond belief.

But because surrendering to the worst impulses in human nature is not wisdom. It is cowardice dressed up as realism.

The point was never that fascism would stay dead.

The point was that when it began to rise again, someone would still be willing to stand in its way.

And unfortunately, here we are.

The warning lights are flashing.

The lessons are not subtle.

And a whole lot of people are pretending they don’t recognize the danger.

If the audience starts noticing the scam, cut to a bigger scene.

Cut to Iran.

Iran getting messy?

Cut to Cuba.

Same trick. Different stage.

On The Apprentice, it was Gary Busey, then Meat Loaf, then Omarosa. Every week, a new human smoke alarm went off and somehow nobody remembered what the original problem was.

That wasn’t just television.

That was the syllabus.

And now the boardroom has aircraft carriers.

It isn’t.

An isolationist stays home.

Trump doesn’t stay home. He stomps around the world like a drunk landlord with a master key and a vague memory that someone owes him money.

He threatens allies.

He picks trade fights.

He bombs things.

He demands deals.

He declares victory before anyone can locate the victory.

That isn’t isolationism.

That’s foreign policy as reality television.

And once you see the pattern, it’s hard to unsee it. Chuck Todd articulated this perfectly in his podcast. Today, he did the thinking for us.

Trump doesn’t withdraw America from the world.

He withdraws America from the parts of the world Americans can’t immediately see.

Alliances.

Treaties.

International health systems.

Aid programs.

Security guarantees.

Nuclear arms control.

The boring stuff.

The invisible stuff.

The things that don’t get a big graphic on Fox News or a guy at a rally yelling, “Sir, thank you for dismantling pandemic surveillance.”

But that boring invisible stuff is what American power actually was.

For 75 years, the United States didn’t just have allies because we were nice.

We had allies because it was useful.

We wanted Europe dependent on us.

We wanted Japan dependent on us.

We wanted South Korea dependent on us.

We wanted the Gulf states dependent on us.

That was not charity.

That was control.

That was leverage.

That was the deal.

We paid a lot of money, yes. But what we got in return was a world where half the developed countries on Earth had to check with us before doing anything stupid.

That is not weakness.

That is the cheapest empire ever invented.

And somehow the “America First” crowd looked at that arrangement and said, “You know what would make America stronger? What if everyone stopped trusting us?”

Genius.

Real 4D chess.

The kind where you knock over your own king and then demand applause.

Were our allies freeloading in some ways? Sure.

But there is a normal way to handle that.

You make them pay more rent.

You don’t burn down the building, hand them the deed, and then call yourself a master negotiator.

Because when allies stop trusting the American umbrella, they don’t become more obedient.

They become more independent.

Europe starts figuring out how to defend itself without us.

Japan and South Korea start wondering if they need their own nuclear weapons.

Middle Eastern partners start cutting their own side deals because maybe America will be there tomorrow and maybe America will be busy live-posting at 4AM.

And here is the part that makes this a difficult sell.

The American-led order does its most important work when nothing happens.

The war that doesn’t start.

The bomb that doesn’t get built.

The disease outbreak that doesn’t become a global disaster.

The regional crisis that gets strangled in the crib before anyone at home ever learns how close we came.

You don’t see what that system buys you.

You only see what it costs.

So it becomes easy for a demagogue to point at the bill and say, “We’re getting ripped off.”

But we weren’t just buying goodwill.

We were buying influence.

We were buying predictability.

We were buying a world where America had a controlling interest in everyone else’s security decisions.

That was the actual “America First” arrangement.

Not the slogan.

The real thing.

Trump is not making America feared again.

He is making America unreliable.

And those are not the same thing.

A feared country can still lead.

An unreliable country gets worked around.

That is what’s happening now.

Allies are not saying it loudly yet, because nobody wants to be the first one to announce that Dad can’t drive anymore.

But they are taking the keys.

Quietly.

One region at a time.

Europe.

Asia.

The Middle East.

And eventually some future president is going to walk back into the Oval Office, look around at the wreckage, and realize America didn’t just lose a war or a deal or a news cycle.

It lost the thing that made everyone else wait for our permission.

And that is a much bigger loss than Trump amd many of his supporters care to understand.

Which, unfortunately, has never stopped them from declaring victory.

And now here we are, being asked to admire the deal that supposedly fixes the war he helped create.

Great.

Can we see it?

Apparently not yet.

The deal is historic.

The deal is strong.

The deal is beautiful.

The deal is maybe the greatest deal anyone has ever signed while refusing to let Congress read it.

Very normal.

Nothing says “trust me” like Donald Trump hiding paperwork.

And the comparison with Obama’s Iran deal is not subtle.

Obama’s deal reduced Iran’s uranium stockpile by about 98 percent.

Trump’s deal?

Obama’s deal had inspectors, restrictions, timelines, and actual text.

Trump’s deal has vibes, a victory lap, and possibly a $300 billion fund.

But it’s different when Trump does it.

Obviously.

When Obama negotiated, it was appeasement.

When Trump gets a worse, vaguer, more expensive version after a war, it’s strength.

Same rabbit.

More blood.

Bigger invoice.

And then there’s Hormuz.

Apparently the Strait is reopening.

Wonderful.

Wasn’t it open before?

That’s the part my brain keeps tripping over.

Keeping shipping lanes open is one of the main reasons America has a Navy. That is not some obscure side quest. That is the job.

And now the world has watched Iran prove it can make the Strait of Hormuz unsafe enough to shake global markets, rattle energy supplies, and force America into a deal just to get back to something resembling the status quo.

That is not strength.

That is a strategic faceplant with aircraft carriers nearby.

He did not make America feared.

He made American guarantees look negotiable.

He made adversaries more confident.

He made allies more nervous.

He made shipping companies do the math and ask whether “the U.S. Navy is in the area” still means what it used to mean.

Fantastic work.

Really restoring deterrence there, champ.

And now there may be a breach with Israel, too.

Let’s be clear: Netanyahu has done enormous damage to Israel, its democracy, its moral standing, and its reputation. Nobody needs to pretend otherwise.

But Israel is still a major American ally.

And Trump has now managed to create a situation where America may be moving toward a deal Israel does not accept, while Israel may keep acting in ways that blow up the deal America needs.

So, in addition to weakening America with its enemies, he may also be weakening America with one of its closest allies.

Very efficient.

Usually you have to be competent to do that much damage in multiple directions.

And yes, I want the deal.

I want the off-ramp.

I do not want Americans dying in another Middle East war because Donald Trump needed a distraction, a headline, and a chance to say “obliterated” into a microphone.

But wanting the bleeding to stop does not mean praising the stab wound.

This is the Trump cycle.

Break the thing.

Make it worse.

Hide the invoice.

Announce a miracle.

Demand applause.

Then blame everyone else when the miracle turns out to be a payment plan.

Maybe this is the best option now.

Fine.

Take it.

But do not ask us to stand there in the smoke and pretend the man who weakened America deserves a medal because he found an exit ramp from the crisis he created.

Release the text.

Show us the deal.

And maybe stop calling it historic until we know whether it is peace, surrender, a pause button, or just another Trump-branded invoice for damage he caused himself.

I still remember the day I got the diagnosis.

Trump Derangement Syndrome.

The doctor came in with that serious look doctors get when they’re about to tell you something life-changing, or that your insurance considers your pancreas out-of-network.

He sat down.

He took a breath.

And he said, “I’m sorry. You appear to be able to notice things.”

I was devastated.

How do you even tell your wife?

“Honey, I need you to sit down. I have TDS. It means when a bankrupt casino owner who paints himself orange says he alone can fix America, my brain refuses to classify that as statesmanship.”

Then came my parents.

Then the extended family.

Some took it hard.

Others said they always suspected something was wrong, especially after I developed the troubling ability to remember what happened last week.

And now I just live with it.

Every day.

I see a man say something insane, and instead of hearing “strength,” I hear “undiagnosed personality disorder with access to nuclear codes.”

I see people call cruelty “patriotism.”

I see billionaires picking pockets in broad daylight while half the country cheers because the thief said “woke” during the mugging.

It’s a burden.

Like Cassandra of Troy, cursed to see the truth and have nobody believe her.

Except Cassandra probably didn’t have an uncle on Facebook posting AI pictures of Trump as a firefighter rescuing an eagle from communism.

So now I wait.

For treatment?

For remission?

For the fever to break?

I don’t know.

Maybe someday I’ll wake up and no longer be afflicted by the terrible condition of noticing obvious bullshit in real time.

Until then, I ask only for your patience, your prayers, and perhaps a small casserole.

This disease has taken so much from me.

Mostly my ability to pretend any of this is normal.

The greatest security?

The best health outcomes?

The most stable families?

The most opportunity?

The highest measured happiness?

Because if that’s the test, we are getting our asses kicked.

Not by communist countries. Not by failed states. By other wealthy capitalist democracies that somehow figured out you can have markets, businesses, private property, ambition, wealth, innovation, and entrepreneurship — while also making ordinary life less brutal.

That is what government is supposed to help provide: the conditions for citizens to build stable, prosperous, dignified lives.

Not perfect lives. Not government-run lives. Just lives where one illness, one layoff, one rent increase, or one bad month does not knock you out of the middle class.

But America increasingly treats people less like citizens to be served and more like labor to be optimized.

And labor is a cost.

So we squeeze.

Squeeze more productivity out of workers.

Squeeze more rent out of tenants.

Squeeze more premiums out of patients.

Squeeze more interest out of students.

Squeeze more fees out of customers.

Squeeze more hours out of parents.

Squeeze more anxiety out of everyone.

That is the enshittification of American life.

Healthcare becomes a profit center.

Housing becomes an asset class.

Education becomes debt.

Retirement becomes a casino.

Childcare becomes a second mortgage.

Community becomes content.

Then we wonder why people are lonelier, sicker, angrier, more exhausted, and less hopeful about the future.

And every time someone proposes making life less punishing — universal healthcare, paid family leave, affordable childcare, stronger labor protections, housing normal people can afford — someone yells, “Socialism!”

That word has been branded so successfully that it ends the conversation before the conversation starts.

But America is already a mixed economy.

Social Security. Medicare. Medicaid. Public schools. Roads. Police. Fire departments. Public libraries. Farm subsidies. Corporate subsidies. Defense contracts. Bank rescues. Tax breaks.

Government is already involved.

The only question is who it serves.

Because when public money flows upward, nobody panics.

Banks get rescued, and that’s stability.

Defense contractors live off public spending, and that’s patriotism.

Corporations get tax breaks, and that’s growth.

Oil companies get subsidies, and that’s energy policy.

But when ordinary people ask for healthcare, housing, paid leave, childcare, or wages that rise with productivity, suddenly half the country hears the Soviet anthem.

That is not a serious argument.

That is branding.

Meanwhile, look at the results.

We spend more on healthcare than comparable countries and still get worse outcomes.

Housing is unaffordable for millions of people who did everything “right.”

Workers are more productive than ever, but the gains keep going somewhere else.

Young Americans are less happy, less secure, and less optimistic about the future.

People are overworked, underinsured, overbilled, isolated, and one bad month away from financial panic.

So why do we keep listening to the people who say the answer is to make capitalism even harsher?

That’s like watching the house burn down and deciding what we really need is more gasoline.

Most people arguing for a stronger safety net are not trying to abolish capitalism.

They are asking why capitalism in the richest country on Earth has to feel so much like abandonment.

Universal healthcare does not abolish capitalism.

Paid family leave does not abolish capitalism.

Affordable childcare does not abolish capitalism.

Labor protections do not abolish capitalism.

Making sure people do not lose everything because they got sick, had a baby, lost a job, or had one bad month does not abolish capitalism.

It makes capitalism survivable.

You can have markets.

But you also need a floor.

Because without a floor, freedom starts to look a lot like being left to drown.

America already has socialism for the powerful.

The only question is whether ordinary people are allowed to have a civilization too.

That is not radical.

That is what a functioning country is supposed to do.

Or how to use software to file your taxes.

Even though the government already has most of the information and could probably just send you a bill like a normal country with furniture.

You need to understand retirement accounts.

Traditional IRA.

Roth IRA.

401(k).

Employer match.

Index funds.

Expense ratios.

Required minimum distributions.

Because apparently aging with dignity now requires light securities-law fluency.

You need to understand car insurance.

Home insurance.

Renters insurance.

Umbrella insurance.

Life insurance.

Disability insurance.

Travel insurance.

Pet insurance.

Dental insurance, which is somehow separate from health insurance because teeth apparently grew up and moved out.

You don’t just need a lawyer.

You need to know which lawyer to know you need.

You need to understand medical billing.

Which bill is real.

Which bill is wrong.

Which bill is duplicated.

Which bill your insurance denied.

Which bill your insurance said it never received.

Which bill went to collections while you were still trying to figure out why the first bill existed.

You need to understand school districts.

Student loans.

FAFSA.

Financial aid.

Private loans.

Public loans.

Loan forgiveness.

Forbearance.

Deferment.

Consolidation.

Refinancing.

And the emotional difference between “you owe $73,000” and “good news, your payment is only $612 a month until democracy collapses.”

You need to understand leases.

Security deposits.

Landlord-tenant law.

Rent increases.

Broker fees.

Application fees.

Move-in fees.

Move-out fees.

Convenience fees.

And fees for the convenience of being charged fees.

You need to understand your phone plan.

Your internet plan.

Your electric bill.

Your streaming subscriptions.

Your bank fees.

Your credit card rewards.

Your airline miles.

Your passwords.

Your two-factor authentication.

Your backup email.

Your backup phone number.

Your security questions.

And the name of your first pet, which is now apparently load-bearing infrastructure.

You need to understand elder care.

Medicare.

Medicaid.

Assisted living.

Nursing homes.

Power of attorney.

Health care proxies.

Living wills.

Estate planning.

Probate.

And how to have one of the worst conversations of your life while also comparing long-term care facilities on Yelp.

You need to understand employment law.

Noncompetes.

Severance.

Unemployment.

COBRA.

Wage theft.

Wrongful termination.

Contractor versus employee status.

And whether the company calling you “family” is about to lay you off by email.

You need to understand scams.

Phishing.

Identity theft.

Credit freezes.

Data breaches.

Fake invoices.

Fake debt collectors.

Fake charities.

Fake IRS calls.

Fake customer support numbers.

And real corporations behaving just enough like scams that it becomes a distinction without much comfort.

And the whole time, we’re told this is freedom.

But a lot of it does not feel like freedom.

It feels like everyone has been handed a full-time job called “Don’t Get Screwed,” and then told it builds character.

This is the hidden tax on American life.

Not just money.

Attention.

Time.

Stress.

Cognitive bandwidth.

Every system is complicated.

Every mistake is expensive.

Every form has consequences.

Every institution has a phone tree.

Every company has terms and conditions.

Every bill requires investigation.

Every problem becomes homework.

And if you don’t understand it all?

That’s on you.

You should have read the fine print.

You should have known the deadline.

You should have compared providers.

You should have appealed the denial.

You should have asked better questions.

You should have hired the right expert.

You should have understood the system before the system ate you.

This is what people mean when they say life feels impossible now.

It is not just that things are expensive.

It is that ordinary people are being asked to navigate systems so complex that even professionals only understand their own narrow corner of them.

And then we act like burnout is a personal weakness.

No.

Burnout is what happens when a society takes every collective problem, breaks it into a thousand administrative tasks, dumps them onto individuals, and calls it responsibility.

We have made basic life into a maze.

Healthcare is a maze.

Housing is a maze.

Taxes are a maze.

Retirement is a maze.

Education is a maze.

Legal help is a maze.

Childcare is a maze.

Elder care is a maze.

And every maze has penalties.

Late fee.

Denial.

Cancellation.

Collections.

Foreclosure.

Eviction.

Bad credit.

Lost coverage.

Missed deadline.

Wrong form.

Start over.

Please hold.

Your call is important to us.

It is not supposed to be this hard to live a decent life.

A functioning country should not require every citizen to become a part-time lawyer, accountant, insurance broker, financial planner, medical billing specialist, benefits administrator, and fraud investigator just to survive.

That is not rugged individualism.

That is civilization failing and handing you a PDF.

America does not just make people pay too much.

It makes people understand too much.

And then it blames them when they collapse under the weight of it.

That is the administrative burden of being alive.

And it is one of the quietest ways American life has been enshittified.

You can say Trump is authoritarian.

You can say he is a demagogue.

You can say he tried to overturn an election.

You can say he demonizes immigrants.

You can say he talks about “vermin.”

You can say he wants mass deportations.

You can say he threatens the press, the courts, prosecutors, judges, political opponents, former allies, current enemies, and probably whichever bathroom scale tells him the truth that morning.

You can say all of that.

But whatever you do, do not compare him to Hitler.

That would be lazy.

Unserious.

Godwin’s Law.

Argument invalidated.

Fine.

Let’s not compare Trump to Hitler.

History matters. Scale matters. Intent matters.

Hitler’s singular evil rests above all on the Holocaust: the systematic murder of six million Jews, along with millions of other victims of Nazi persecution and war.

There is no direct comparison between industrialized genocide and anything Trump has done.

That should not be hard to say.

But sometimes “don’t compare him to Hitler” stops being a serious historical objection and becomes a rhetorical panic room.

A place people run so they don’t have to talk about what is actually happening.

So let’s not compare men.

Let’s compare warning signs.

The attack on institutions.

The cult of grievance.

The dehumanizing language.

The promise that only one man can save the nation.

The way cruelty becomes entertainment.

The way people convince themselves they would have resisted evil in the past while excusing it in the present.

And since everyone wants moral precision, let’s be precise.

No, cutting USAID is not genocide.

It is not the Holocaust.

But when a government knowingly guts lifesaving humanitarian programs, people die.

Food disappears.

Medicine disappears.

HIV treatment disappears.

Malaria prevention disappears.

Maternal care disappears.

Emergency aid disappears.

And people who would have lived, die.

Again: not the Holocaust.

But also not nothing. Estimates are in the tens of millions who would have lived had he not made those cuts, have died.

That is what bothers me about the Godwin’s Law reflex.

The word “Hitler” is treated as morally radioactive.

Fine. It should be.

But dead children from preventable disease are also morally radioactive.

Families starving because some billionaire-brained grievance machine decided foreign aid was a scam are morally radioactive.

People losing lifesaving medication because the richest country in history needed to cosplay austerity for applause lines are morally radioactive. All while spending billions of tax payer dollars on ballrooms and golf outings.

So no, don’t compare Trump to Hitler.

Compare him to Mussolini if that feels safer.

Compare him to Berlusconi if you need more television.

Compare him to Nixon if you want extra paranoia.

Compare him to a casino bathroom that learned to hate immigrants.

I’m flexible.

But do not tell me the moral line is a word choice.

Do not tell me the comparison is the problem while the conduct gets a pass.

And definitely do not tell me what you would have done in the 1930s if you are excusing what you are watching now.

Because most people meet history gradually.

One rationalization at a time.

One “he doesn’t really mean it” at a time.

One “the courts will stop him” at a time.

One “both sides are bad” at a time.

One “don’t be hysterical” at a time.

One “don’t compare him to Hitler” at a time.

So fine.

I won’t compare him to Hitler.

But I will compare the excuses.

And the excuses are starting to look very familiar.

Because when “he’s not as bad as Hitler” becomes one of the nicest things you can say about someone, the issue probably isn’t Godwin’s Law.

It’s the résumé.

Even if the lake was pristine.

Even if the brochure promised archery, horseback riding, leadership training, and “a strong sense of national purpose.”

You would still say no.

Because some names do not add value.

They contaminate the product.

That is where the Trump name is now.

Not “heading.”

Now.

The Trump name is no longer a premium. It is a surcharge. A liability. A warning label with gold trim.

There are buildings in New York that used to carry the Trump name because it supposedly meant luxury. Prestige. Wealth. Status.

Especially to out-of-town buyers who associated Trump with the image he managed to manufacture on The Apprentice: decisive billionaire, master negotiator, business genius, golden escalator Zeus with a boardroom.

But in New York, Trump was always understood differently.

He was a punchline. A gaudy, tacky, nepo-incompetent rich kid with a talent for self-promotion and an allergy to restraint.

A poor man’s idea of a rich man.

A dumb man’s idea of a smart man.

A tacky man’s idea of taste.

So when the TV spell broke, the brand did not just lose its shine.

It became embarrassing.

Then residents began realizing the giant gold letters on the building were not making their apartments more valuable.

They were making them harder to sell.

Imagine spending your life trying to turn your last name into a luxury brand and ending up as something condo boards remove before showings.

That is not political correctness.

That is the market asking maintenance to bring a scraper.

And now the backlash is going global.

In Albania, thousands of people have been protesting a massive luxury resort project linked to Jared Kushner’s investment firm and Ivanka Trump.

Whether you follow every detail of Albanian coastal development or not — and frankly who among us doesn’t — the larger point is hard to miss.

People hear “Trump family project” and increasingly think:

Absolutely not.

Now the Trump name means something else.

Lawsuits.

Protests.

Corruption.

Environmental backlash.

Political baggage.

Global embarrassment.

A security concern with room service.

The Trump brand is moving into the same commercial category as:

Dahmer’s Prepackaged Lunch Meats.

O.J. Simpson’s Cutlery Barn.

Enron Accounting Services.

The Hindenburg Luxury Travel Experience.

Fyre Festival Event Planning.

And, yes, Hitler Sleepaway Camp.

Which, at this point, might still test better with certain Republican youth group chats than a Trump-branded condo in Manhattan would with anyone.

That is where we are.

A name that once promised status now drags a cloud behind it.

Developers do not want the protests.

Investors do not want the controversy.

Residents do not want to explain to dinner guests why they live under the giant gold letters of America’s most exhausting family drama.

At this rate, future Trump descendants may have to change the family name back to its original Drumpf — not because it sounds better, but because it has fewer active lawsuits attached to it.

Imagine ruining the family name so badly that Drumpf becomes the prestige option.

The Trump family has become like an obnoxious family attending a Broadway play.

They ran up on stage, took over the performance, locked the audience inside, started selling merch in the aisles, and now refuse to get off the damn stage.

At first, some people thought it was funny.

Then it was disruptive.

Then it became dangerous.

Now people around the world are standing up and saying:

We paid for a society, not dinner theater with subpoenas.

That is what has to sting.

Because Trump built everything around the illusion that his name meant winning.

But markets notice things.

Communities notice things.

Residents notice when prestige turns into embarrassment.

Developers notice when a name brings protests instead of buyers. An Australian Trump Tower just got scrapped because the brand name is toxic there.

Investors notice when luxury starts coming with legal discovery.

And eventually, even people with money realize that slapping TRUMP on a building does not make it worth more.

It may make it harder to sell.

At this point, the Trump name is not just losing value.

It is becoming the kind of brand you remove before showing the property.

Trump Derangement Syndrome.

I get it. From your side, it probably looked like we were overreacting. Like every headline was the end of the republic, every scandal was Watergate with a worse supporting cast, and every Trump quote required a fainting couch and a constitutional scholar.

But now some of you are starting to see it.

The war.

The cash grabs.

The self-dealing.

The way everything somehow bends back toward him — his money, his ego, his enemies, his brand, his revenge.

So let me say this clearly:

Welcome.

Seriously.

No victory lap. No gloating. No “we told you so.”

Okay, maybe one tiny “we mentioned this once or twice,” whispered quietly into a throw pillow.

But mostly: welcome.

Because if you are starting to see the con, you are not the enemy.

You are needed.

This is why some of us have been posting so much.

Not because Facebook is a sacred temple of democracy. It is mostly a malfunctioning town square with vacation photos and birthday reminders.

And not because we enjoy arguing with people we used to get along with.

We have been posting because if we are not going to use our voices now, when exactly were we saving them for?

People love to imagine what they would have done in 1930s Germany.

They would have seen it.

They would have spoken up.

They would have resisted.

But I think the harder truth is this:

Whatever you are doing now is probably what you would have done then.

If you are excusing it now, you probably would have excused it then.

If you are looking away now, you probably would have looked away then.

If you are calling people hysterical now for sounding the alarm, you probably would have called them hysterical then too.

So yes, some of us have been loud.

Because silence is starting to look a lot less like wisdom and a lot more like consent.

The problem was never just Trump.

Trump was the distraction, the accelerant, the permission slip.

While everyone was staring at him — defending him, attacking him, worshipping him, hating him — people with money and power kept doing what they do best:

Buying influence.

Pressuring newsrooms.

Shaping courts.

Flooding campaigns.

Changing the rules.

Making sure the system keeps working for them. Making sure they not only control the outcome of the debate, but they control what we’re even here debating about.

You can see it in the Ellison takeover of CBS and the firing of Scott Pelley.

You do not have to abolish a free press if you can buy the company that owns it.

You do not have to ban a voice if you can bury it in the algorithm.

That is why I keep asking people to follow me on Substack.

Not because I have suddenly become emotionally dependent on newsletter software, although stranger things have happened.

Because there, I have your email address. I can still reach you if Facebook throttles my posts, changes the algorithm, or decides I have made the machinery uncomfortable.

That is one small thing we can actually do.

Stop letting the people who own the platforms decide what we see.

Follow independent voices.

Share the posts that clarify the moment.

Support journalism that still has a spine.

And when someone you know is starting to wake up, do not humiliate them for being late.

Help them all the way out.

Because this whole thing has been an old pickpocket scam.

One person distracts you.

The other robs you blind.

And fellow Americans, we have been robbed blind.

So if you are starting to see the grift, good.

That does not make you stupid.

It means you are still reachable.

And we are going to need everyone who can still tell the difference between patriotism and a con. Because this is how democracy and our freedoms get taken away without there being a formal declaration that it’s over.

Not blindly. Not as a cult figure. But I admired the ambition.

Electric cars. Reusable rockets. Starlink. The willingness to take on industries that seemed too entrenched, too slow, too comfortable, and force them to move.

There was a time when Musk seemed like one of the few people on earth with the money, imagination, and nerve to pull the future forward.

And honestly, some of that is still true.

That is the uncomfortable part.

Elon Musk probably still will go down as one of the greats. He helped transform the auto industry. He changed the economics and expectations of private spaceflight. He built things that mattered.

History will not pretend those things didn’t happen.

But history also has a way of adding asterisks.

And Musk is building himself one of the largest asterisks of the modern age.

Because the same man who may be remembered as a builder of the future may also be remembered as a man who became cruel, reckless, arrogant, and morally unmoored.

I did not get there easily.

For a long time, I tried to separate the work from the man.

The personal chaos was disturbing. The reports about his private life — including asking women to have his children — were bizarre and revealing. The online behavior became harder and harder to defend. The falling out with people like Sam Harris made it clearer that this was not just eccentricity. Something had curdled.

Still, I tried to keep separate categories in my head.

The companies mattered.

The accomplishments mattered.

The man was becoming harder to admire, but maybe the work could stand apart.

Then came USAID.

According to former USAID global health official Nicholas Enrich, Musk and DOGE helped dismantle an agency whose work saved lives around the world, including programs connected to HIV prevention, Ebola response, tuberculosis, food aid, and support for some of the poorest children on earth.

Enrich says the consequences were catastrophic — with “hundreds of thousands” suffering or dying.

Musk himself bragged that he had spent the weekend feeding USAID “into the wood chipper.”

That is not a normal political disagreement.

That is not fiscal conservatism.

That is not reform.

That is not “efficiency.”

USAID was not perfect. No government agency is. But it was one of the ways America did good in the world while also serving its own interests. It helped stop diseases before they spread. It provided food and medicine. It stabilized fragile regions. It built goodwill. It was humanitarian aid, but it was also national security.

And Musk treated it like something to smash.

That is the part I cannot get past.

The richest man in the world helped dismantle life-saving aid for some of the poorest people on earth — and appeared to enjoy the spectacle of destruction.

There are moments when a person’s character stops being a private matter.

This is one of them.

Because when your ego becomes powerful enough to shut down medicine, food, disease prevention, and child welfare programs, your personal defects are no longer merely personal. They become policy. They become body counts. They become history.

That is why this is so hard.

He will be remembered with the asterisk.

The man who helped electrify the auto industry — and helped destroy humanitarian aid.

The man who advanced private spaceflight — and degraded public life.

The man who wanted to be seen as a builder — and became, in some of the most vulnerable places on earth, an agent of destruction.

That does not erase what he built.

It stains it.

And maybe that is the final tragedy of Elon Musk.

He did not fail to become historically important.

He failed to become worthy of the history he made.
