Every family has its stories.

Some get told around the dinner table. Some get repeated at weddings and funerals. And some sit quietly in the family history until the country begins to resemble a moment that those stories already lived through.

That is where Aunt Gina comes in.

She was one of four Cimini family members who served in the fight against fascism during World War II. But Gina’s story was different from the others because she was a woman—and because she understood something that America has spent generations learning and relearning:

Democracy is not an abstraction. It is something you have to serve.

Gina was a Lieutenant Commander stationed in Annapolis within the Navy Nurse Corps during World War II, at a time when women in uniform were still fighting their own battles for recognition, authority and equality. More than 11,000 women served in the Navy Nurse Corps during the war, working on hospital ships, in naval hospitals, dispensaries and medical evacuation aircraft, including in some of the most dangerous theaters of the conflict. These women weren’t decorative additions to the American war effort.

They were the war effort.

They treated the wounded. They accompanied men into combat zones. They ran hospitals on the homeland. They evacuated the injured. Eleven Navy nurses were captured by the Japanese in the Philippines and spent years as prisoners of war, continuing to care for other prisoners under extraordinarily brutal conditions. And Gina belonged to that generation.

Think about that for a moment.

A woman from my family stood inside the machinery of a nation fighting Hitler and Japanese militarism while women were still being told, in countless ways, that their proper place was somewhere smaller.

Gina apparently never got that memo.

After the war, her life continued to intersect with history. She spent time at the White House as part of the medical staff during the Eisenhower years. She was also instrumental in the beginnings of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti.

That is an extraordinary life.

And yet what strikes me most isn’t simply the list of accomplishments.

It is the worldview behind them.

Gina belonged to a generation that understood service as something larger than personal advancement. They had watched fascism turn nationalism into a weapon. They had watched authoritarianism consume democratic institutions. They understood that freedom without responsibility was just another word for privilege.

And that brings me, reluctantly but inevitably, to Washington today.

Because while I think about Aunt Gina, I also think about the women serving in today’s military—and about the experienced military leaders who have been pushed out, sidelined or forced into retirement during Pete Hegseth’s tenure at the Pentagon. Reporting has described an extraordinary pace of removals and blocked promotions among senior officers, including women and other experienced leaders. Whatever political label one puts on it, there is something deeply unsettling about an institution losing experienced people who have spent decades learning how to lead.

And there is something potentially hopeful about what happens next.

Some of these former military men and women are beginning to look toward public service outside the military. Some are running for Congress. Some are becoming candidates. Some are speaking publicly about what they witnessed inside the institutions they once served.

Because military service teaches something Washington desperately needs more of:

You don’t get to choose which parts of democracy you defend.

And the people who keep that city alive aren’t simply “sailors.”

They are mechanics, electricians, firefighters, cooks, aircraft handlers, air-traffic controllers, nuclear technicians, machinists, medical personnel, security forces, engineers and emergency responders. They work watches around the clock. When most of America is asleep, somebody is still on the bridge. Somebody is still monitoring a reactor. Somebody is still maintaining an aircraft. Somebody is still standing security. Somebody is still ready to fight a fire, flood or catastrophic accident.

The ship never sleeps.

Neither does the responsibility.

Now consider the compensation from a deliberately blunt perspective.

Take an enlisted sailor earning roughly $49,320 a year in basic pay. If we divide that by every hour in a year—8,760 hours—we get:

$49,320 ÷ 8,760 = $5.63 an hour.

Obviously, the Navy doesn’t technically pay sailors an hourly wage, and they aren’t literally working every minute of those 8,760 hours. They sleep, eat and have periods of personal time. But unlike a civilian employee, they don’t get to simply punch out and go home. During deployment they are living aboard the ship, subject to orders and available for duty around the clock.

And for months at a time, that can mean thousands of miles from home, separated from spouses, children, parents and friends, with no guarantee that the next phone call won’t be the one that changes everything.

Nine months away from your family isn’t simply a long business trip.

The irony is that we routinely talk about military power in terms of the price of aircraft carriers, aircraft and missiles. We debate whether a carrier costs $13 billion or $15 billion. We talk about the cost of maintaining nuclear reactors and buying aircraft by the hundreds.

But underneath all those billions are human beings.

Young men and women standing watches in the middle of the night.

People launching aircraft from a moving runway in the ocean.

People crawling into machinery spaces.

People training to fight fires they hope never happen.

People learning what to do if the ship is hit.

People who may spend months watching the horizon while their children grow up at home. $5.63 an hour sounds almost absurdly small.

It is a reminder that patriotism has a human price, even when the Pentagon’s accounting spreadsheets don’t put a dollar sign next to it.

And speaking of Abraham Lincoln…

Here’s a strange little historical coincidence.

Abraham Lincoln’s name was apparently included on the original list of prospective members of the Donner-Reed emigrant party—the infamous wagon train that became trapped in the Sierra Nevada during the winter of 1846–47.

Lincoln didn’t actually make the journey. He withdrew from the venture before the party departed.

Thank God.

Because the Donner Party became one of the most horrifying episodes in American westward migration. Trapped by an early and devastating snowstorm, members of the party eventually died from starvation and exposure, and some of the survivors resorted to cannibalism.

So somewhere in the great alternate-history machine of American history lies a truly bizarre question:

What if Abraham Lincoln had gone west with the Donner Party?

No Lincoln presidency.

No Emancipation Proclamation.

No Lincoln at Gettysburg.

No Second Inaugural.

No president Lincoln confronting the greatest constitutional crisis in American history.

And perhaps, eventually, no USS Abraham Lincoln sailing through the world’s oceans.

History is sometimes held together by absurdly thin threads.

A man changes his mind about joining a wagon train.

A train gets delayed.

A politician loses an election.

A ship survives a storm.

A sailor decides to reenlist.

And suddenly the trajectory of an entire country changes.

Imagine the United States without Abraham Lincoln.

Then imagine the United States without the thousands of sailors aboard the carrier that bears his name.

Different centuries. Different dangers. Different battles.

But the same fundamental truth:

America has always depended upon people willing to stand somewhere dangerous while the rest of us sleep.

Maybe the least we can do is remember what that sacrifice actually costs.

Did you know Lincoln’s body was interned 17 times after his death!

He became like Leonard Nimoys ashes at a comic convention! I digress have a fine summers day!

For generations, Americans were taught that freedom was the defining virtue of democracy. We were free to speak, worship, protest, publish, vote and challenge our government. It was a magnificent idea.

You’re free to use a flamethrower on Authoritarian rule as well as Socialism

Somewhere along the way, we transformed “I am free” into “I am free to do whatever I want.”

Those are not the same thing.

And then something rather remarkable happened.

The Government started releasing the footage.

The latest tranche of UAP material released by the Pentagon this month includes videos, photographs and reports covering encounters going back decades. Some describe strange orbs, triangular objects and other phenomena that witnesses—including military personnel—could not readily identify. (U.S. Department of War)

So perhaps we should begin with the least controversial statement imaginable:

UFOs are real.

Not necessarily spacecraft from another civilization. Not necessarily little green men. Not necessarily anything remotely resembling Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

But unidentified flying objects?

Absolutely.

The United States government has documented things flying through the sky that, at the time of observation, could not be identified. That is what UAP—Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena—means. NASA itself defines UAP as observations that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena. (NASA Science)

And that brings us to the really interesting question.

What the hell are they?

That is where the conversation should begin rather than end.

Because there are several possibilities, and extraterrestrials are only one of them.

Perhaps they’re visitors.

Let’s not pretend this possibility is ridiculous.

The universe is incomprehensibly large. There are hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy alone, and we now know that planets are not some cosmic rarity. The idea that Earth is the only place where life ever emerged is certainly possible—but it is hardly the only intellectually defensible possibility.

If life arose independently here, why couldn’t it have arisen elsewhere?

And if intelligent civilizations exist elsewhere, some might be millions or even billions of years older than ours.

Think about that for a moment.

Human civilization went from sailboats to nuclear weapons, moon landings and artificial intelligence in a geological eyeblink. Give another civilization a million-year head start and imagining what it might be capable of becomes almost impossible.

Perhaps we are not seeing aliens.

Perhaps we are seeing technology so far beyond our own that we don’t even possess the vocabulary to describe it.

But there is an enormous problem with this theory:

Where is the evidence?

NASA has been remarkably clear on this point. It says it has found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life and no evidence that UAP are extraterrestrial. Its scientists have also emphasized that the available data are often insufficient to determine what observers actually saw. (NASA Science)

That doesn’t prove aliens aren’t here.

It simply means we haven’t proved that they are.

And those are two very different statements.

Even the Vatican isn’t particularly frightened by the idea.

He didn’t withhold information from Americans, because “could” is not a statement of fact. Unlike the lying criminals in MAGA world who seem to live off misinformation, he wasn’t going to present a possibility as a proven fact.

How did we let all these D-students rise to such levels of political insanity?

MAGA is angry because the promised kingdom turned out to have a cash register behind the curtain. They were told they were taking their country back, and instead discovered that somebody had been taking them for a ride. Progressives are angry because corruption has become so brazen that fear itself is beginning to feel like public policy. People are tired of wondering whether the next knock on the door is politics, policing, or something darker wearing the uniform of authority.

So I watch Larry David and laugh because sometimes comedy is the last functioning emergency exit as MSM delivers nonplussed play by play without guidance or fact checking.

But the joke keeps walking down the street.

America increasingly resembles a neighborhood where the political arsonists have discovered four-wheel drive. They roar past the houses, laws be damned, institutions be damned, consequences be damned, behaving as though power were not a public trust but a recreational vehicle.

And now AI has arrived at precisely the wrong moment—and perhaps precisely the right one.

It can make propaganda faster than any printing press in history. It can manufacture a photograph, a voice, a scandal, a lie so quickly that by the time the truth puts its shoes on, the lie has already crossed three state lines.

But AI can also do something extraordinary: it can put investigative tools, historical knowledge, translation, education, organization, and access to information into the hands of ordinary people. It can help citizens see patterns that powerful institutions would prefer remain invisible.

The machine isn’t the villain.

The question is who teaches the machine what to amplify.

Because technology has never been our salvation or our damnation. Fire didn’t destroy civilization. Cars didn’t invent reckless drivers. Television didn’t invent demagogues. The internet didn’t invent liars.

We did.

And that is both the frightening part and the hopeful part.

The country is not helpless. Ordinary Americans have stopped dictators, broken monopolies, organized labor, exposed corruption, defended civil rights, rebuilt cities, marched in the rain, crossed bridges, opened newspapers, sat at lunch counters, voted when they were told their votes didn’t matter, and occasionally told the powerful to go to hell.

That is the American tradition too.

So I don’t know what happens next. Nobody does.

But I know this much:

A democracy does not die because angry people exist. It dies when ordinary people become convinced that nothing they do matters.

That is the lie we cannot afford to believe.

Not now.

Not in this neighborhood.

Something is shifting in American politics.

The progressive wing of the Democratic Party is no longer flickering—it’s spreading like a Canadian wildfire. El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan is another signal that grassroots candidates can compete without becoming captive to the super PAC money machine. By speaking directly to the everyday struggles of working families, embracing economic populism, and taking principled positions on foreign policy—including strong criticism of actions they view as contributing to genocide—he tapped into an electorate hungry for authenticity instead of carefully focus-grouped talking points.

Meanwhile, MAGA appears increasingly trapped by the very politics that fueled its rise: grievance, cultural resentment, and an endless cycle of outrage. For all the promises to champion forgotten Americans, many critics argue the movement ultimately delivered its greatest victories to billionaires, powerful corporations, and tech elites while asking working people to settle for slogans instead of solutions.

The Democratic Party is changing before our eyes. The old guard of cautious centrism is facing a restless base demanding leaders willing to challenge concentrated wealth, corporate influence, and a political system that too often serves donors before citizens. This isn’t simply a contest between left and right anymore—it’s becoming a struggle over whether government answers to ordinary people domestically or to those with the deepest pockets.

Michigan may prove to be more than a single victory. It could be an early chapter in a broader political realignment, one where energized grassroots movements reshape the Democratic Party from the ground up and challenge Republicans who have tied their fortunes to Trump-era politics. As this momentum continues, the next election won’t just determine who governs—it will reveal whether a new generation of politics has truly arrived

The new look Democratic Party is ready to steamroll into the government with heads on pikes many old centrist democrats and surely replace the hoard of orange republicans who mindlessly failed this nation!

There comes a moment in every age when history stops asking what people believed and begins asking what they tolerated. This is your moment.

You watched democracy stripped apart, one institution at a time. You watched women become targets in a campaign to roll back their rights. You watched corruption parade through the halls of power, taxpayer dollars siphoned into private empires, criminality excused as cleverness, and deceit celebrated as strength. You did not merely witness it—you made peace with it.

You mistook swagger for courage, domination for masculinity, and obedience for conviction. You traded the Constitution for a strongman’s promises and called it patriotism. You wrapped yourselves in the flag while quietly abandoning the principles that gave it meaning.

No empire built on lies has ever escaped the verdict of time. Every demagogue eventually runs out of enemies to blame. Every cult of personality collapses beneath the weight of its own illusions. When the smoke clears, history will not remember your slogans. It will remember your silence.

The names will endure, but not as monuments. They will survive as warnings: Epstein. Tate. The Orange crime syndicate. Symbols of moral decay, of power without honor, of influence without wisdom.

You imagine yourselves to be the vanguard of manhood, yet history has always reserved its admiration for different men—the ones who defended the vulnerable, spoke when silence was easier, and chose integrity when conformity was rewarded. Strength has never been measured by the volume of one’s anger, but by the depth of one’s character.

The wheel of history is already turning. You can hear it in the voices that refuse to be intimidated, in the young who see through the performance, and in the millions of decent men who reject your counterfeit vision of masculinity. Your season is not eternal. Every reign built on fear eventually discovers that fear has an expiration date.

When the final account is written, it will not be generous. Your movement will not be remembered as a renaissance of manhood, but as an age of surrender—when too many men abandoned honor for spectacle, conscience for grievance, and liberty for the illusion of strength.

The future belongs to better men and women. It always has.

History will bury this time 100 ft below encased in concrete and taught as is Nazism, an omen that will last forever.

The Constitution, and the spirit of 1776 that inspired it, can only endure if those entrusted with power reject self-dealing, conflicts of interest, corruption, and the temptation to place themselves above the law. Public office was never intended to be a path to personal enrichment or immunity. It is a public trust.

The framers understood that republics do not usually collapse because the Constitution fails on paper. They fail when those sworn to protect it gradually abandon its principles while still claiming to honor its words. Laws matter, but so do unwritten norms: honesty, restraint, transparency, and a genuine commitment to serving “We the People.”

A constitutional republic survives not merely because officials obey the letter of the law, but because they honor its spirit. When public servants faithfully keep that covenant, liberty flourishes. When they exploit their office for personal or political advantage, they weaken the very foundation upon which American self-government rests.

Birthright citizenship, enshrined in the Fourteenth Amendment after the Civil War, was designed to establish one principle above all others: that citizenship is not a favor bestowed by those in power, but a constitutional status that government must recognize. It was meant to end forever the idea that rulers could decide who belonged and who did not.

If that principle becomes conditional, many people fear it signals something broader: that constitutional rights increasingly depend on the preferences of those temporarily holding office rather than on enduring constitutional guarantees. When rights become contingent instead of inherent, the relationship between citizen and state begins to change. Government shifts from protecting liberty to determining who is entitled to it.

The concern many critics express is different. They argue that if constitutional protections can be weakened through expansive executive authority or judicial interpretation, the nation risks drifting away from a government of laws toward one where power becomes increasingly centralized and constitutional limits become less meaningful. In that view, rights are no longer treated as inalienable but as increasingly dependent on political majorities, judicial philosophies, or executive discretion.

Whether one agrees with that conclusion or not, the debate surrounding birthright citizenship is ultimately about more than immigration. It is about whether the Constitution establishes permanent boundaries that government cannot cross, or whether those boundaries themselves are becoming negotiable.

Congress writes laws, agencies are formed and rules are made by all the alphabet agencies. Public comment is offered but generally ignored and a perfunctory act.

Once a board of 3-2 offered the appearance of agency independence since 1935 now just are simple tools of a king.

That raises a fundamental constitutional question. If Congress creates an agency to carry out the law with a degree of insulation from day-to-day politics, can the President simply sweep aside that independence? The Court’s answer moves the balance decisively toward the executive.

The concern is larger than any single administration. Our constitutional system was designed around competing centers of power, not a single elected official directing every lever of government. Independent agencies exist because lawmakers understood that some functions—regulating markets, protecting workers, enforcing labor law, or overseeing communications—should not swing wildly every four years depending on who wins an election.

When those guardrails are weakened, the distinction between the rule of law and the rule of one person becomes less clear. The Constitution did not envision a President who governs by personal command over every institution. It envisioned a President checked by Congress, reviewed by the courts, and constrained by laws enacted by the people’s representatives.

Ironically, many who call themselves strict constitutionalists are embracing an expansive theory of presidential authority that would have been viewed with deep suspicion by many of the Framers. The question is no longer simply what the law says, but whether longstanding institutional independence survives when it conflicts with an increasingly powerful executive.

Whether one calls this an “imperial presidency,” “unitary executive theory,” or simply a dramatic shift in constitutional interpretation, the trend is unmistakable: more authority is flowing toward the White House and away from institutions designed to stand apart from partisan control.

A democracy rarely disappears in a single dramatic moment. It changes incrementally, one ruling at a time, each justified as a technical legal adjustment until the cumulative effect is impossible to ignore. The real test is not whether your preferred party holds the presidency today. It’s whether you would be comfortable granting the same powers to your fiercest political opponent tomorrow.

In the national imagination, Pittsburgh is often cast as a city of steel mills, blackened smokestacks, football dynasties, and industrial decline. Yet beneath that familiar narrative lies another history—one less frequently taught, but no less consequential. It is the story of a city where socialism was not a foreign import, an academic abstraction, or a social media trend. It was a lived political tradition forged in the furnaces of capitalism itself.

As democratic socialists and social-democratic candidates gain traction in an increasingly dysfunctional two-party system, it is worth remembering that western Pennsylvania was traveling this road long before it became fashionable. And if there is a contemporary political figure who embodies that tradition, it is Congresswoman Summer Lee, whose rise from community organizer to member of Congress reflects not a political anomaly, but a return to one of Pittsburgh’s deepest historical currents.

The story begins with blood.

The wealth that built Pittsburgh’s grand mansions and industrial empires did not emerge from innovation alone. It was extracted through grueling labor, dangerous workplaces, child labor, strikebreaking, and violent confrontations between workers and industrial magnates. The city’s legendary robber barons—men like Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick—created fortunes so vast they transformed the American economy. But workers paid the price.

The violence of industrial capitalism created its own opposition. By the late nineteenth century, Pittsburgh had become fertile ground for labor radicalism. In 1876, activists helped establish the Workingmen’s Party, one of the earliest organized socialist movements in the United States. Workers packed meeting halls to debate wages, working conditions, and the concentration of wealth. Socialist newspapers circulated throughout the region. Union halls became universities of political thought.

By the early twentieth century, socialism had become so normalized in western Pennsylvania that it occupied a visible place in mainstream public life. Tens of thousands of Pittsburgh-area voters cast ballots for Eugene V. Debs, the five-time Socialist Party presidential candidate whose calls for economic democracy resonated deeply with industrial workers.

This was not fringe politics.

The Pittsburgh Press regularly carried socialist bulletins. Nearby industrial communities such as Turtle Creek and Pitcairn elected socialist mayors and council members. In steel towns stretching along the Monongahela River, socialist candidates became part of ordinary civic life.

Perhaps nowhere was this more visible than among the region’s Finnish immigrant communities. In places like Monessen, Glassport, and McKeesport, Finnish workers carried with them a rich cooperative tradition that blended labor activism, education, and community building.

These “Red Finns” established cooperative stores, mutual aid societies, educational programs, and enormous community centers known as Red Halls. Far from being marginal institutions, these halls became anchors of civic life, often rivaling local churches in influence. They hosted dances, lectures, political meetings, theatrical performances, and language classes. For many immigrant workers, socialism was not simply a political ideology. It was a way of constructing a community capable of surviving industrial exploitation.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh’s Jewish labor movement was building its own institutions. The Labor Lyceum, founded in 1907 by the Workmen’s Circle and Jewish labor organizers, became a hub of socialist education, cultural life, and political organizing in the Hill District. Lectures on labor rights existed alongside theater productions, literary events, and community gatherings. Politics and culture were understood as inseparable.

This ecosystem of radical thought produced newspapers, pamphlets, strike bulletins, and community organizations that chronicled a vision of democracy extending beyond the ballot box. Publications such as the Allegheny Socialist documented struggles that mainstream institutions often ignored. Many of these materials remain preserved in the Archives & Special Collections at the University of Pittsburgh, where researchers can trace the contours of a forgotten political world.

That world never entirely disappeared.

The Cold War drove much of the socialist tradition underground. Red Scares, deindustrialization, and the collapse of organized labor weakened institutions that had once defined working-class political life. Yet fragments endured—in union halls, community organizations, neighborhood activism, and the stubborn memory of communities that understood economic power and political power as inseparable.

The election of Summer Lee represents the reemergence of that tradition in a new century.

Lee’s victories were frequently described by national media as evidence of a growing progressive movement. They were that. But they were also something more local and historical. Her success was rooted in communities that have spent generations organizing around labor rights, racial justice, economic inequality, and democratic participation.

What appears new from Washington often looks familiar from Pittsburgh.

The language has changed. Steel mills have given way to hospitals, universities, technology firms, and service-sector employment. The demographics of the movement have evolved. Yet the core questions remain remarkably consistent: Who benefits from economic growth? Who controls political power? Who has a voice in shaping society?

Those questions animated the Red Finns of Monessen. They inspired Labor Lyceum organizers in the Hill District. They motivated Debs voters throughout Allegheny County. And they continue to animate the political coalition that propelled Summer Lee to Congress.

For generations, America’s political establishment has treated socialism as an exotic ideology imported from somewhere else. Pittsburgh’s history suggests otherwise.

Social democracy and labor radicalism were not foreign intrusions into American life. They emerged organically wherever workers confronted concentrated wealth and sought democratic solutions. In western Pennsylvania, they became woven into the region’s identity.

The red thread running through Pittsburgh’s history is not one of revolution. It is one of democratic participation, collective action, and the persistent belief that ordinary people deserve a meaningful voice in the institutions that govern their lives.

Long before pundits debated democratic socialism on cable television, Pittsburgh workers were already having that conversation in union halls, cooperative stores, ethnic community centers, and crowded meeting rooms beside the mills.

Summer Lee did not create that tradition.

She inherited it.

And in many ways, she is simply the latest chapter in a story Pittsburgh has been writing for nearly a century and a half.

He’s a lemon.

Americans know who he is.

Supporters see a fighter. Critics see a con man. Historians may eventually describe him as a symptom of deeper fractures in American life.

Whatever one’s view, the central question facing the country is no longer who Donald Trump is.

The question is: What do we intend to do about the conditions that made him possible?

For nearly a decade, Trump has dominated American political life like a giant flashing billboard on the side of a national highway, next to a porn shop and a gun shop.

Every scandal.

Every indictment.

Every outrage.

Every social media eruption.

Everything becomes the story.

The result is a peculiar form of political paralysis.

We spend so much time examining the lemon that we forget to ask why the orchard keeps producing them.

Looking Beyond Trump

I recently heard something different at the opening events surrounding the Obama Presidential Center and Library.

There, beneath the celebration and reflection, was at least a hint of what has largely been missing from our public conversation.

There was talk of caution, planning, and an acknowledgment that democracies survive not by defeating a single politician, but by strengthening institutions capable of outlasting him.

But beyond isolated moments like that, I hear remarkably little discussion about a future beyond Trump.

Instead, I hear endless analysis of his personality, his tactics, his grievances, and his latest controversies.

The media ecosystem remains trapped in a cycle of Trump consumption.

The coverage often resembles weather reporting during a hurricane: minute-by-minute updates about the storm while offering little discussion about rebuilding the town.

The Trump Book Industry

This is why the recent flood of Trump books makes me uneasy.

Consider the latest work by journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan.

The reporting is detailed, richly sourced, and filled with behind-the-scenes revelations.

But one cannot help noticing a familiar pattern.

We are once again invited into Trump’s world—his calculations, his reactions, his frustrations, his political instincts.

The focus remains on the man at the center of the spectacle.

The problem is not the reporting itself.

Haberman’s access has been extraordinary for years, even decades.

But extraordinary access always raises questions.

Access is currency.

It is rarely granted without expectation.

Politicians understand that visibility itself is a form of power.

Every anecdote, every exclusive detail, every insider account reinforces the idea that Trump remains the indispensable figure around American politics.

Revelation or Crisis Control?

From a crisis-management perspective, this should sound familiar.

When corporations face catastrophe, experienced consultants often advise rapid disclosure and controlled transparency.

Reveal enough information to satisfy public curiosity while maintaining control of the larger narrative.

The public feels informed.

The institution survives.

Viewed through this lens, the endless stream of Trump revelations begins to look less like accountability and more like crisis containment.

We are given the play-by-play.

We are rarely encouraged to step back and examine the game itself.

Meanwhile, the deeper questions remain largely unanswered.

Why has economic inequality continued to widen?

Why do millions of Americans feel abandoned by the institutions that once provided stability?

Why has public trust collapsed across government, media, education, and business?

Why do so many citizens feel that democracy no longer delivers for ordinary people?

These are not Trump questions.

They are American questions.

The Missing Conversation

Politics focused entirely on one man becomes a form of national sleepwalking.

It encourages citizens to believe that removing a single individual will somehow resolve structural problems decades in the making.

History suggests otherwise.

Demagogues rarely create the conditions that elevate them.

They inherit them.

The challenge before this country is not simply defeating Trumpism at the ballot box.

It’s constructing a vision of civic life capable of outliving it.

That requires discussing public institutions, economic fairness, education, media accountability, and democratic reform.

It requires talking about what comes next.

The lemon has been thoroughly inspected.

Every bruise.

Every blemish.

Every rotten spot.

All documented in exhaustive detail.

The question now is whether we intend to plant something better.

My Concern About the Haberman-Swan Book

The other big question is whether we’re going to accept Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan’s book as revelation or crisis control.

The details involved in this book reek of crisis control.

If any organization faces a crisis, every crisis consultant advises the same thing: come out with all of it, all of the truth, and the public will soon forget.

And it appears that this is what has taken place.

Maggie Haberman’s access—even an interview with Trump himself appears in the book—raises questions for me.

Unfortunately, Trump’s crisis is being controlled.

We’ve swept away the Epstein files.

We’ve swept away the Iran war.

Instead, we’re focused on the latest debacles and personal controversies.

We’re concerned about his name on buildings.

We’re debating the clowns around the circus.

We’re focused on the circus master.

We’re focused on all of his little issues while rarely looking to the future.

And now we’re being asked to digest it all through the lens of yet another insider account.

Believe me, the circus master himself is a lemon.

But the bigger issue is whether the release of all this information functions as a form of crisis control.

We Need Plans, Not Promises

Now, the notion of a plan rubs politicians the wrong way because they know things change.

No one wants to be held to a promise.

But we’re not looking for promises.

We’re looking for framing.

We’re looking for direction.

We’re looking for at least an inkling of a plan.

We don’t need detailed blueprints.

We need a destination.

The spirit of the plan is what matters.

We all know plans change.

Reality is messy.

Mistakes happen.

Circumstances evolve.

If someone wants universal healthcare, for example, they don’t achieve it overnight.

They start somewhere.

They build.

They improve.

That’s how planning works.

But when government is constantly looking at the lemon, and the media is constantly looking at the lemon, and politicians across the spectrum are busy defending or attacking the lemon, we’re missing the bigger point.

The future isn’t being discussed.

And that’s dangerous.

For most of human history, that role made sense

Two thousand years ago, survival depended on strength. The world was filled with uncertainty. Wild animals, famine, disease, war, brutal labor, and short lives. A father often needed to be a protector first and a person second. If you could swing a club, build a shelter, defend your family, and survive another winter, you were doing your job.

But that world is gone.

Today, you don’t stand alone. You have a partner. You have family. You have friends. You have science, medicine, education, and thousands of years of accumulated human knowledge at your fingertips. You have a kaleidoscope of emotional tools and opportunities that our ancestors could never have imagined.

The challenge of fatherhood isn’t to be tougher anymore.

It’s to be wiser.

It’s to be kinder.

It’s to be more present.

It’s to listen more than you lecture.

To love more than you fear.

To raise children who don’t merely survive the world, but help improve it.

Many of us still carry the echoes of that ancient struggle. Some of it is written into our habits, our anxieties, even our genes. We inherited instincts forged in a world where danger was always just beyond the campfire. We still feel the urge to fight, to worry, to shoulder every burden ourselves.

But maybe the greatest gift of modern life is that we don’t have to.

We can finally retire from being fearful brutes.

We can trade armor for empathy.

We can replace constant vigilance with curiosity.

We can become students as well as teachers, caregivers as well as providers.

The modern father has an opportunity no generation before him has ever had: to be strong without being hard, protective without being controlling, and courageous enough to ask for help when he needs it.

So today, celebrate your liberation.

Celebrate the fact that your worth is measured by more than your ability to endure suffering.

Celebrate your family, your community, your friendships, and your own humanity.

The world still needs fathers.

But it needs fathers who are fully alive.

What Chapter of Project 2025 Was This In?

Maybe I missed a page.

Maybe it was buried somewhere between the culture war grievances, the promises to dismantle the administrative state, and the fantasies about returning America to some mythical golden age that never actually existed.

But can someone point me to the chapter in Project 2025 that called for crashing the American economy, destabilizing global energy markets, and handing Iran a stronger strategic position in the Middle East?

Because I don’t remember reading that part.

For years, MAGA loyalists, Republican operatives, billionaire influencers, and Silicon Valley tech evangelists assured us they were the adults in the room. They claimed they alone understood economics, geopolitics, innovation, and the future. We were told that government expertise was the problem, institutions were the problem, regulation was the problem, and that a handful of self-appointed geniuses armed with venture capital and podcasts would somehow engineer national greatness.

How’s that working out?

The same people who mocked expertise now find themselves defending every self-inflicted wound as if it were a masterstroke. Markets stumble? It’s part of the plan. Global alliances weaken? Part of the plan. Strategic rivals gain leverage? Also part of the plan. Every failure becomes evidence of success if you’re willing to suspend enough disbelief.

What fascinates me is not the arrogance of the oligarchs. History is full of wealthy men convinced that their success in one field qualifies them to redesign civilization. The railroad barons did it. The industrial magnates did it. The financiers did it.

What’s remarkable is the devotion of the followers.

How many times can someone be proven wrong before they begin to question the people they entrusted with power?

At what point do slogans collide with reality?

At what point do working Americans realize that being rich is not the same thing as being wise, and running a social media platform is not the same thing as understanding economics, diplomacy, agriculture, manufacturing, energy policy, or the fragile architecture of global stability?

Silicon Valley’s greatest illusion is convincing people that because someone can build an app, they can govern a nation.

They cannot.

A nation is not software. Citizens are not users. Democracy is not an algorithm. International relations cannot be debugged with a software patch and a press release.

Yet here we are, watching self-described visionaries treat the world’s largest economy like a laboratory experiment while ordinary Americans absorb the consequences.

The irony is almost poetic. The movement that promised strength projects uncertainty. The movement that promised prosperity generates instability. The movement that promised America First often seems unable to distinguish between genuine national interests and the personal interests of wealthy donors, media personalities, and tech billionaires.

And still the applause continues.

Still the excuses flow.

Still the cult of personality overrides observable reality.

The tragedy is not that powerful people make mistakes. They always have. The tragedy is that millions of Americans have been convinced that questioning those mistakes is somehow disloyal.

Patriotism is not obedience.

Citizenship is not worship.

And democracy was never meant to require blind faith in politicians, billionaires, or self-anointed tech prophets.

Sooner or later, reality sends the bill.

It doesn’t care about campaign slogans. It doesn’t care about social media followers. It doesn’t care about podcast downloads or billionaire valuations.

Reality arrives with higher prices, weaker institutions, damaged alliances, and consequences that cannot be spun away by talking points.

The question is no longer whether the bill is coming.

The question is how much damage will be done before the people cheering finally look up, pull their heads out of the sand, and admit that maybe handing the steering wheel to a collection of oligarchs, grifters, and attention merchants was not the master plan they were promised.

The Epstein story has never felt like an ordinary criminal case. For more than twenty-five years, powerful people, institutions, and gatekeepers have seemed remarkably adept at limiting public scrutiny, controlling information, and narrowing accountability. What makes the latest revelations so striking is that they suggest the conversation is no longer simply about the cover-up itself, but about explaining and justifying it.

When officials are reportedly discussing on tape how information was managed, withheld, or framed, the conversation begins to resemble a second layer of the same story. The cover-up becomes part of the public record. What once operated in shadows is now discussed almost matter-of-factly, as if the public should simply accept that powerful people protect powerful people.

The most unsettling possibility is that these disclosures function as a form of normalization. The message is not, “Nothing happened.” The message becomes, “Of course we did what we did—why wouldn’t we have?” In that sense, an admission can be more politically useful than a denial. It reframes the debate from whether actions occurred to whether those actions should carry consequences.

For many Americans, that is the real scandal. The issue is no longer Jeffrey Epstein alone. It is whether a system exists in which influence, proximity to power, and political loyalty can override transparency and accountability. If that perception takes root, public trust becomes the ultimate casualty.

Whether one agrees with that conclusion or not, the continuing Epstein saga remains a test of faith in institutions. A quarter century after the story first emerged, the public is still asking the same question: who knew what, when did they know it, and why has so much remained hidden for so long?

I heard something yesterday that exposed the heart of a man.

It started innocently enough. We were discussing a recent study showing declining birth rates in America and much of the developed world. Someone pointed out that the trend seemed to accelerate around the same time the iPhone entered our lives. We laughed.

“What don’t people understand about the ‘I’ in iPhone?” I joked. “The whole thing is about me, me, me.”

There was some truth buried in the humor. The smartphone revolution transformed society. We became more connected and somehow more isolated. Communities weakened. Families became smaller. Attention spans shrank. The self became the center of the universe.

Then I said something simple.

“America needs to figure it out.”

I meant that we need to figure out how to rebuild community, purpose, belonging, and a future that young people can afford to embrace.

And then it happened.

The man I was speaking with looked at me and said, without hesitation, “White babies. We need more white babies.”

The room didn’t just get quiet.

Something collapsed.

Not because I had stumbled into a debate about immigration or public policy. Not because I encountered a different political viewpoint. I’ve spent my life arguing politics. I can handle disagreement.

What stunned me was the nakedness of the statement.

There it was.

A worldview stripped of disguise.

America’s challenges weren’t economic. They weren’t cultural. They weren’t technological. They weren’t about housing costs, childcare costs, healthcare costs, stagnant wages, student debt, or the fact that many young people simply can’t afford to start families.

No.

For him, the problem was pigmentation.

I immediately went into what could only be described as verbal assault mode.

I told him he needed to cleanse his mind of hatred and bigotry. I told him that reducing human worth to skin color was morally bankrupt. I told him that America has always been strongest when it expands the definition of who belongs rather than shrinking it.

The strange thing is that I don’t believe he was a bad person.

That’s what bothered me most.

He wasn’t wearing a red hat.

He wasn’t screaming conspiracy theories.

He wasn’t waving a Confederate flag.

He wasn’t unemployed, isolated, or living in some extremist echo chamber.

He appeared functional.

Reasonable.

Educated.

The kind of person you might stand next to in line at a grocery store and never think twice about.

Which is precisely why the moment hit me so hard.

We often imagine prejudice as something obvious. We picture it wearing a uniform or carrying a torch. We imagine hatred announcing itself before entering the room.

But often it doesn’t.

Often it wears khakis.

Often it has a good job.

Often it smiles politely.

Often it appears perfectly normal until one unguarded sentence reveals what has been quietly growing beneath the surface.

America’s struggle has never simply been against organized hate movements. Those are easy to identify.

The harder battle is against the assumptions people absorb without examining them.

The casual remarks.

The inherited fears.

The myths repeated so often that they begin to sound like common sense.

Somewhere along the way, this man had come to believe that demographic change represented a threat rather than a reality, that the future belonged to one group rather than all of us.

And perhaps nobody had ever challenged him.

Perhaps everyone else simply nodded and changed the subject.

I didn’t.

Because silence is how ignorance survives.

The irony is that the greatness of America has never come from racial purity. The very phrase is absurd when applied to a nation built from every corner of the globe.

America’s strength has always been its ability to absorb, adapt, reinvent, and expand.

Generation after generation, new arrivals were first feared and then woven into the national story.

The people who worried about Italians were wrong.

The people who worried about Irish immigrants were wrong.

The people who worried about Jews were wrong.

The people who worried about Asians were wrong.

And those worrying about demographic change today are wrong for exactly the same reason.

The future isn’t a bloodline.

It’s a shared project.

As I walked away from that conversation, I wasn’t angry as much as I was saddened.

Because I realized how much work remains.

Not just in politics.

Not just in elections.

But in everyday conversations between ordinary people.

The fight for a better society doesn’t happen only in legislatures or courtrooms.

Sometimes it happens over coffee.

Sometimes it happens in a parking lot.

Sometimes it happens in the moment when someone says something revealing and another person decides that prejudice deserves an answer.
