This week’s blog is about the horrifically painful murder trial of Lindsay Clancy.

I first became aware of this case a few weeks ago. During my Central Park morning walks the last few weeks, I’ve been listening to The Prosecutors Podcast episodes covering the Lindsay Clancy trial in parts. I have also been watching bits and pieces of the trial streamed daily. There is so much to say and yet it feels like there’s nothing to say except that this family has been destroyed, three beautiful children are dead, and Lindsay Clancy’s life will never be the same.

Lindsay Clancy is being tried for the murder of her three children. She was a mother that loved her children and struggled in postpartum. Reaching out for help through multiple avenues, she was failed. She was prescribed 13 different psychiatric prescriptions within a short period of time. As someone who has tried their fair share of anxiety and depression medications, I know how insane the side effects and adjustments can be. This case strikes a cord with me because I also unfortunately know how severe depression is. I also have complex feelings about psychiatric medication and care. Did medication save my life? Absolutely. I know what it’s like to not want to wake up in the morning. I know how it is to find no joy in anything and feel hopeless that you’ll never feel like yourself again. I can identify with seeking answers and help and feeling failed by the mental healthcare system. The first weekend that I couldn’t get out of bed, was crying constantly, and felt like the world had crashed down on my shoulders, I didn’t know what to do. Google and ChatGPT were no solve for my despondency. My psychiatrist at the time was out of office for the new year. I was desperate for immediate relief from the crippling hopelessness and darkness and yet I had no idea where to go or what to do.

My goal with this blog post is not to discuss the legality of Lindsay Clancy’s case. It is not to pick apart the trial and declare my feelings about it. Lindsay Clancy killed her children and that is a horrific tragedy no matter what way you look at it. What I hope to do is to make the conversation about women’s mental health and mental health less shameful. Having a baby is the craziest experience of one’s life (from what I’ve heard from some of my best friends who are mama’s and my own Mom and family members). There is no rule book when you leave the hospital with that newborn. You’re expected to figure it out and do it well. You’re not sleeping, you’re trying to keep this new love of your life nourished and not crying and you’re bleeding for six weeks while recovering. As I said to someone this morning about postpartum care, if men were leaking from their you know what, we’d likely give year long parental leave. How the hell are we supposed to be leaders of the free world and we make parents go back to work at four months (and earlier in some cases)? One year minimum of maternity leave should be the policy. Lindsay Clancy was clearly struggling after having her third baby. She asked for help and she was cared for by humans who are fallible. She saw doctors, who probably did the best they could with the information they had, but clearly did not have a full picture of her case. She was failed by mental healthcare providers and her husband. She didn’t get the help she deserved and the result was a horrific tragedy with innocent children killed.

There is no shame in struggling with mental health. Too many women suffer alone in silence and it’s critical we start talking about how hard it is to be human, especially as a mom in this country. Some of my best friend’s have had babies in the last 18 months and they all had different experiences. Some had c-sections, some had natural births. Some had okay recoveries, others had challenging recoveries. Some dealt with postpartum anxiety, depression, or rage, others dealt with OCD and autoimmune challenges. No postpartum experience of any of my best friends was the same. Same for my friends who have frozen their eggs. No two experiences have been the same. We must start listening to women and helping them when they reach out for support. We must reevaluate the legislation we have in place regarding return to work for women and how we handle postpartum care.

I am deeply sad for Lindsay Clancy, her ex husband, her family and all of their loved ones. It is a horrific tragedy that her children are no longer here and I am sure that not an hour goes by that she’s not thinking about them. There are no winners in this case. Three innocent children who deserved to grow up are no longer here. Let’s hope we open up a conversation about the failing mental healthcare system in this country and the brokenness of how we treat postpartum.

And on top of the Lindsay Clancy trial, there’s the death of Hayden Panettiere. Another woman who opened up about her struggles with postpartum and was dropped by her Neutrogena contract for speaking out about them. For a brand to cut ties with someone for openly talking about their experience with something that a huge percentage of the population will go through is cruel. Poor Hayden battled abuse, addiction, and a lot of mental health uphill battles. As I celebrate eight years sober next month, I am more grateful than ever for my sobriety. I pray for her loved ones too.

So to end this blog on a more hopeful note… I hope that we can stop the stigma of mental health and postpartum challenges. I hope we can lean on each other more and fight for legislation for women to be treated better after becoming a Mom. And if you’re a prayer warrior, keep those suffering in your prayers.

Mindful Margie is a reader-supported publication. I’m soaking it up and cherishing the long days. Tomorrow is my last day at my corporate job. In honor of that, here are some of my favorite summer eats, purchases, mantras, habits and more that have kept my mental health in a steady and consistent happy baseline for 2 months now.

Eeeatsss:

Cherries — I swear the ones out of Washington state are the best in years

Briermere Farms pies - The fresh fruit peach cream pie has been my favorite pie since I was a little girl. It never fails me.

Buddha Berry - If you know me, you know I live for ice cream. A place that has ample flavors and exciting toppings… sign me up for fro yo every night.

Purchases:

Vuori Retrograde Shorts - I have been living in these since buying them this week. They are the perfect walking in Central Park shorts or throw on to run errands in shorts.

Night light for reading my book in bed while my husband sleeps next to me? Instant upgrade of bedtime routine as I focus on reading before bed and don’t need the lights on to do so.

Superieur electrolytes - One of my Mom’s yogi besties turned her on to these electrolytes and I’ve been drinking them every day. I am a sweaty human in general and this summer’s humidity has me taking multiple showers per day. Using electrolytes in my water first thing in the morning makes me feel more hydrated and clear.

Mantras:

My second half of 2026 word has been “ACCEPTANCE.” It has radically shifted my energy to see the glass half full and realize that I am 100% in control of my response to things. I can choose self pity or I can choose gratitude. I can choose resentment or I can choose compassion. I’m not liking how something is going? Acceptance is the only answer that has brought me peace.

Journaling in the morning speaking to my Higher Power asking “What will you have me be today?” I’ve finally surrendered the fight of trying to control my life. When I ask my Higher Power, which I call God most days, to show me the way, my day goes MUCH better.

Put the phone down. My Mom once told me that the only parenting advice she has for me once my husband and I become parents one day is to “put my phone down and pay attention to my baby.” I find that advice helpful in my life currently. Putting my phone down opens me up to the present moment and being in the present is where I can find gratitude, peace, and contentment.

Habits

I make the bed every day. I have for 15 years. I am superstitious and something about making the bed is essential for me. I can’t not do it. I highly recommend it. You feel accomplished just by taking the simple action of doing it.

I have been walking, jogging, or running in the park every day (usually first thing in the morning but always at some point if I can’t get it in in the morning). Movement first thing for me always sets me up to have a better today. Even better when I do it with friends. I got to walk with two friends this week and both times it was the highlight of my week.

Less caffeine and ideally not on an empty stomach. I am sensitive to anything put in my body. Blood tests have shown it. It definitely is the reason I’m an alcoholic (thank GOD a sober one). So caffeine is a vice I can use to get that quick adrenaline rush. Recently I’ve noticed my hands shaking in the morning which freaked me out and could be from over caffeination. I have gotten myself to one cup of coffee per day and then an iced latte as a treat on days that I want more than one cup. I’m really trying to get on the iced green tea game and get to just tea and decaf coffee.

Disclaimer: I hate listing things I’ve “purchased” because it feels yucky influencer vibes as if I’m trying to profit off of selling you something. I don’t have any affiliation with the things listed above and you do not need any of them.

Below is a pic of one of the coloring pages I finished. I am loving coloring right now. This is the coloring book I have.

Until length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

My husband and I celebrated our one-year wedding anniversary over this past weekend. Some days it feels like we were married this week, and other days it feels like we’ve been married five years. During our anniversary date on Saturday, we counted the states and countries we’ve traveled to in our first year of marriage (11+ states and 4 countries). In our first year, I started Ordinary Girl, filed it as an LLC, and, one day before our wedding anniversary, made the decision to formally dissolve the LLC. I quit my job without a real plan, went away to explore “trauma” (I put it in air quotes because I’m not really sure what expectations I had), had at least ten not viable, bad startup ideas, and ended up in the darkest depression I’ve ever experienced. We also attended weddings, my husband started a company, we went on a ski trip to Europe, met our first PERFECT nephew, witnessed two of my siblings get engaged, and felt immense joy. Here are some of my takeaways in reflection of our first year married:

What your wedding ceremony or reception ends up as does NOT matter. What does matter is who you marry and the loved ones and community who are part of that.

In my biased opinion, I had a perfect wedding day. It feels tacky and uncomfortable to admit, but I cannot not address the privilege I had in having a generous wedding budget. My dad works harder than anyone I know. I am not sure in his 48 years of working whether he’s ever actually been completely off for longer than a few days. As a self-made son of a plumber from Rockaway Beach, my Dad provided his only daughter (me) with an unforgettable wedding day. In writing this article, I texted my Dad to ask if either of his parents went to college. I know his mother did not, but I could not remember if his father did. His response: “had opportunity but alcoholic father prohibited him from going to college.” I could write more about my dad breaking a cycle of a dark disease in building our family. What I’ll say is that my Dad has tirelessly devoted his life to being the best father possible, and he made it so that I could have any kind of wedding I wanted. I could write a lot to qualify my wedding to assuage my fears of getting “canceled” or seeming out of touch. I hope you’ll assume that I have the best intentions in sharing these intimacies and that I am grateful every day for being able to have a dream wedding in my favorite city in the world.

The weather was magical, we had all of our favorite people there, and it was truly the best day of my life. Could I tell you what color ivory tablecloths I selected? No. Could I tell you what I ate? No. Could I name one appetizer we passed? Nope. Can I remember all of the songs the band played? Nope. Do I remember the hugs from our loved ones? Yes. Do I remember chugging Diet Cokes and dancing my heart out to Pink Pony Club with all of my loved ones? Yes.

Instagram/social media/social pressure/our culture paints this consumerist/gluttonous bullsh*t that marriage is some check mark, and a wedding is an opportunity to flex wealth or status or “perfection.” There are entire social media accounts dedicated to showcasing curated pictures of brides and grooms and lists of the “best-in-class” vendors they used.

What makes a wedding enjoyable to me is the witnessing of love between two people and how the day is unique to the couple. I have been to twenty-two weddings (I just counted and fear I might even be missing some). I have a bad memory, so yes, you could blame it on that, but I also couldn’t tell you any meal I ate or song I danced to at any of the twenty I’ve attended, let alone my own, as I mentioned.

The day is about celebrating the love of a couple and witnessing two people become one as they vow to build a life together. And let me tell you, I have never seen those vows lived out more in my own marriage as I battled deep depression for months while my husband remained extremely loving, supportive, and patient.

So I guess my point is who you marry matters. The place cards, don’t.

Every couple has a “thing".

You will likely have something you disagree about or handle differently within your relationship. Ours is driving. Our latest incident with driving happened only yesterday evening so it feels too raw to address. My best advice? I try to assume the best and be understanding where the other person is coming from. I’ve had to remind myself time and time again that my way of thinking is not the only way of thinking or necessarily “right".

Marriage requires work. We have to continually choose to prioritize each other.

Life gets big and time is precious. There are weeks where we get to Friday and I feel like I’ve had twenty minutes of quality time with my husband because of our work schedules and life schedules. I’ve realized how important it is to carve out that dedicated quality time. Whether it’s a walk after a meal or a coordinated date night, we have to consciously make time for each other. It doesn’t just happen, it requires planning and commitment.

Sometimes marriage is 50/50 but a lot of times it’s 90/10 or 80/20 or 70/30 or 60/40.

I am forever grateful for the support my husband gave me during the depths of my struggles this winter. He handled the laundry, the cooking, the cleaning, the organizing, the dry cleaning, and anything that had to be done to keep our household running and always with patience and grace. He never passed judgment when the best I could do some days was get out of bed and shower. I took on more in times he had a more demanding work schedule, other times he took on more as I was traveling for work. We never tally’d who did what and we always were grateful for each of our contributions. I was down bad and my husband was the 90 and I was the 10. I always knew marrying my husband was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. I only appreciated him more when witnessing how he lived out in sickness and in health in the early days of our marriage.

Laugh together.

After our aforementioned driving thing from yesterday, I sang a made up song in our service elevator about our personalities and we both burst out laughing. There is magic in shared laughter and I’m so grateful my husband and I laugh together often.

So one year into marriage, I’m a grateful woman. To my husband, I love you more than any words could ever capture. Thank you for building a life with me. I choose you always.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" This morning I looked it up myself: “unspoken everyday rules regarding polite conversation, interpersonal boundaries, or personal relationships.” The word originates from the Polynesian word tapu or tabu, meaning "sacred" or "forbidden". Its use dates back to the 1700s when Captain James Cook used it to describe something "sacred, forbidden, or off-limits" on one of his adventures. Why my sudden curiosity with the word taboo? I most recently heard it used in discussing the stigma of mental health. Talking to others who have dealt with depression has helped me. This blog is a detailed and vulnerable recap of one treatment I tried for depression.

A few months ago, I sat on a zoom meeting in a conference room at work, tears streaming down my face, trying to keep my volume level low enough that no one could hear my conversation but loud enough for my psychiatrist to hear me. I declared “but I’m not a depressed person, this is just a depressive episode”. I was baffled how little I knew about depression and determined not to be labeled as someone struggling with “depression”. For someone who deeply cares about advocating against the stigma of mental health, alcoholism, and addiction, I was not acting like it. I couldn’t accept that I was dealing with depression and I couldn’t accept that getting back to my baseline self wouldn’t happen with a snap of my fingers. I had these milestones in my head of when I should “feel better” and I was willing to do anything.

Around the time of that zoom as I was trying to expedite my “healing” from depression, I ended up at coffee with someone who shared with me the success they had in doing transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression treatment. The treatment place they’d gone to happened to take insurance. (I do not understand health insurance at all and I could go on and on about how frustrating I find it all). Grasping for hope that the treatment could work for me too, I booked a consultation appointment. The psychiatrist scanned my brain. He asked me a list of questions. He said things I didn’t understand nor cared to ask follow up questions about. And that kicked off 6 weeks of me going to a little office in midtown 5 days per week to get what I have previously referred to as my “brain shocked.”
<div yellow swim cap looking cotton cover on my head and then measured to make sure the machine was on the right part of my brain. Once the machine in place, I sat in the reclining chair for 20 minutes while my brain was tapped by a coil in bursts.

My brain was re-scanned after four weeks of the treatment and today after six weeks of treatment. The scan showed my brain waves had changed, indicating neural plasticity. Have I felt better over the last six weeks? Absolutely. Is it because of the treatment or because of the SSRI medication or the weather getting better or trying to keep to a routine of things that I know help with managing depression or some combination of all of those things? I’m not sure.

When I couldn’t get out of bed in January and experienced a level of hopelessness, despair, and doom I had never faced, it felt like I would never get back to myself. Every single person I spoke to who has dealt with depression assured me that I would get through it and I would not feel the way I did forever. I could write a whole blog on how depression has radically changed me and how I see the world.

Showing up at a random office in midtown 5 days per week was a commitment. Some days I could only make it there late after getting out of bed rushing into the shower to get ready for the work day. Other days I arrived after a morning meditation session and workout. Some days I went after work and got headaches from a day of thinking followed by pulses delivered to my brain. I’m proud of myself for sticking with the treatment.

I am intensely grateful that I was able to get help when I needed it most. Part of me thought about sharing more in depth about the worst of the worst times when I couldn’t get out of bed and brushing my teeth felt like more than I could handle, but I’m still traumatized from that period of life. It terrifies me how desperately hopeless I was and I feel intense shame over the pain I put my husband and parents through as witnesses.

What I’ve gained coming out of a dark hell I wish on no one is a new appreciation for the little things in life. I took a picture of an older couple holding hands in Central Park this morning (see below) because it made me smile.

<a class="image-link image2 What I’ve learned: there is no perfect treatment for depression. There is no one snap of the fingers, shock of the brain, shaman or energy healing that “cures". What has helped me is taking small actions each day to get back to myself. I have been a member of various teams at various levels, some of the sports being soccer, softball, tennis, golf, lacrosse, basketball and others I’m forgetting. Some of my vivid childhood memories are in the fields of London where we competed in games played in fields next to a prison. Anxious young Maggie knew not to mess up pitching in softball games for fear she might end up a prisoner too... I digress 😂

Each of my three younger brothers was a division I athlete. My youngest brother is a fifth year pitcher on a baseball team that just made it to the College World Series. I didn’t turn out to be a division I athlete. Sometimes I regret that.

I love sports for many reasons. I love the team mentality it demands. I love the competition. I love the way fans rally behind a team. I love the merchandise. I love how competition demands your attention and presence. I love that it is never over until it is over. I love the smell of stale beer in a stadium. I love the hoarseness in my voice after cheering.

I have watched my brothers invest countless hours in practice, games, travel, nutrition, and more. They have come home defeated after losses and elated after wins. It has taken sacrificing hanging out with friends, family, and girlfriends to practice and train. I have seen how sports have provided a discipline, a win together mentality, and a resilience that is admirable in each of them.

My youngest brother (who I’ll refer to as T) has devoted his life to baseball. My grandfather (devout Yankees fan and former pitcher for a farm team before getting the dreaded elbow injury) taught T how to throw at around the age of 4. T’s journey has been one of high highs and low lows. He’s spent years eating only the cleanest ingredients, stretching every morning and evening, working out with coaches and trainers all over the country, navigating injuries, arguing with coaches, getting close to teammates, living in different living situations (some great - like a solo apartment, others not - like the cigarette cat lady on the Cape), getting cut from teams, making it onto teams, warming up in the bullpen, pitching in front of thousands. He’s missed family functions, hanging with kids his age, internships, and more to play the sport he has loved since he was a little boy. Watching him play one last college season has been the greatest joy for me (and I think my whole family would agree). His season didn’t go the way he wanted but he didn’t give up. When he had every reason to quit and throw in the towel, he didn’t.

He may put on a baseball jersey for the last time in these next few weeks. He may not ever step onto a pitchers mound again in a collegiate or professional setting. He’s dedicated the last 20 years of his life to baseball. I get teary eyed just writing about this chapter that might be closing for him. I’ve seen how much time and effort he’s invested. I know how hard some days have been for him. What I’m most proud of is that he has never quit. No matter how many odds stacked against him or how many setbacks he’s had, he has continued to show up.

Sports feel like one of the last things uniting us. Everything is too expensive and all day I see bold claims about robots and agents and data centers and what I’ve come to call AI dread. There is no feeling like the high of watching a come back (Go Knicks!) or jumping up and down with joy and hugging a stranger next to you. I could write endlessly about what I’ve learned from sports and watching my brothers compete. The connection, the roars, the chants, the chills, the nervous stomach, the camaraderie… I love it all.

And to you #17, there are no coincidences that your jersey number is my lucky number. Leave it all out there and know how beyond proud I am to be your big sister. And when those worries about what you don’t know about the corporate world creep in, remember that baseball taught you the most important lessons of all: how to love something with all your heart and how to never quit.

Until tomorrow friends (yes I’m publishing twice this week since I missed last week)… xx

My sparkly fun sneakers

and how IG is a highlight reel

Maggie Commers

Hi friends!

I have a pair of metallic silver sneakers that I wear often. They were an impulse buy from an Instagram ad in April of last year. I have gotten more compliments on them than I can count. I wear them at least two times per week. Whenever someone comments on them, I proudly declare, “they are my fun shoes.”

My relationship with social media is complicated, much like my relationship with anything that gives a quick dopamine hit. I reckon I am not the only one who struggles with this. I circle through phases of using Instagram like a drug, deleting the app off of my phone for weeks at a time, checking in with timed limits, and using a behavior app to track how long I can go without it. I don’t “need” as much in the times when I’m not looking at Instagram. I don’t buy supplements or hair products that boldly advertise changing lives in just a few days. Overall, that quick hit buying has decreased. My silver sneakers remain one purchase I have no regrets about. They are functional, they bring me joy, and they remind me to compliment others.

If you too struggle with social media, here’s what helps me keep things in perspective:

It is a highlight reel.

The job of an influencer is to profit off of the people that follow them. That is the business model. They make money off of you buying the things they sell or promote.

It is designed to be addictive.

Buy the fun sneakers. Life is short. If you’re sucked into the vortex of comparing and despairing over the perfection you’re fed through an app, I’m right there with you.

Here are my 3 shimmers of joy from this week:

I am reading Lena Dunham’s latest book, Famesick. It has been an easy read and despite never seeing the show, Girls, I’ve loved reading about her rise to fame.

I am finishing the writing of this from a hotel in Chicago. We are here for a wedding of one of my best friends. The city has a calmer and happier energy than New York on this beautiful day in May. The sun, the lack of frenetic pace, and the privilege to celebrate someone I love so much is filling me up.

Two of my three brothers are getting married this year. I went shopping with my Mom for mother of the groom dresses for both of their weddings. On May 15 of last year, my Mom and I were in New York Presbyterian for her second lumpectomy to remove a second round of breast cancer. Seeing her healthy, thriving, and looking like a silver fox in these beautiful gowns is something I cherish. I get teary eyed with gratitude that we get these moments together. She found two dresses at the same store she bought her dress for my wedding last year. She even had the same salesman. There are no coincidences.

Until next week friends… xx

The myth of balance

dismantling b.s. we are sold that anyone has it all together

Maggie Commers

Hi friends!

I have found myself (like many others this week) in some LinkedIn algorithm hell where I am fed articles every day about startups requiring workers to work seven days of the week, founders that work around the clock and shaming of anyone who may opt for a more traditional 9-5 job. I loved this related piece, On Grindslop. Of course success takes hard work and sacrifice. Everyone is entitled to live the life they choose for themselves. Being inundated with content of this sort has caused reflection for me on balance and what balance really means.

What I’ve always known about balance is that I don’t and have never have had it. Sometimes I feel like an okay employee, a shitty wife, a good friend, and a somewhat healthy eater. Other days I feel like a shitty wife, a good errand runner, a bad exerciser, and a good community member. Take any combination of roles I have and I have yet to lay my head to rest at the end of the day thinking, “Today, I was a great wife, worker, daughter, sister, friend, community member and I was spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally my best self.” If each of my roles is a bucket, I try to keep any one of them from empty. They are never all full. I do my best to keep them above the emergency life alert level where I start to fall apart.

I could declare balance is a myth because that’s been my experience. Maybe it isn’t a myth to others. I’m here to tell you that my buckets are never all full. I do my best and I still beat myself up for falling short. Beating myself up doesn’t serve me or anyone so I’m working on that. If you feel like you’re falling short in any area, I’m here to scream “me too”. You are not alone. Have I fallen into the trap of wondering why I can’t follow the routine of some random person on the internet who declares they wake up at 4:30am, pray and meditate and chant for an hour, run a marathon, cure cancer, write a NYT best seller, and then make it to the office by 8:30am perfectly showered with a blowout? Absolutely. I am not balanced. I don’t follow that routine. I never will. I am awakening and realizing maybe it’s okay to be me.

Here are my 4 shimmers of joy from this week:

I have a reengaged love of orange cream sparkling water or any orange flavored bubbly water. Hal’s has a seasonal orange cream seltzer that is the perfect amount of flavor and bubbles.

I met the son of one of my best friends for the first time this week. “We’ve come a long way from dancing on tables in Australia” were my parting words to her as we said goodbye. There is something special about witnessing a friend become a Mom for the first time. I see her perfect baby as this blend of her and her husband. I’m enamored that she carried that perfect baby for 9 months and in awe of the strength of mothers.

Noah Kahan talks about anxiety and depression in this NPR podcast episode in a way that spoke to me deeply. When you have struggled with either, you develop this depth of empathy and understanding that I don’t think is possible unless you’ve been in the depths of darkness. I hate to say if you know you know but if you know, you KNOW.

I had to add one extra shimmer this week because last weekend I had the privilege of practicing yoga with a bunch of special people out in Montauk. It’s Monday morning. I need to embroider 100 hats for work. All need to be embroidered by 4pm and then packed into a suitcase to travel to the west coast. 10am arrives and the store I planned to do the embroidery could not do a rush order. Note to self: same day does not always mean same day when a logo has to go to corporate for approval and approval takes 3 to 5 business days. With frenetic NYC energy, I dial up every embroidery place I can find in close proximity to my office. I land on a place close by and haul the 29 pound box of hats over for a rush job.

While I’m at the embroidery store, I am helped by Sunny. She advises on size and color and prepares a hand written invoice for me. While I’m working with her, she’s answering the landline. One phone call she receives is a new business owner who demands to “speak to the boss” despite Sunny telling her she is the boss. The caller is rude, condescending, and entitled. She hangs up. My eyes widen. Sunny declares some version of, “people should realize they get more bees with honey.”

Kindness usually yields better results than impatience, frustration, or rudeness. That moment witnessing how Sunny was treated made me cringe with shame as flashbacks of the times I haven’t been patient, kind or understanding play through my memory. It quickly served as a reminder of what I already know, to be kind and intentional in all of my interactions. I try to assume everyone is doing the best they can and you never know what silent battle someone is fighting. Rather than sit in judgment of this business owner, I tried to pivot to reflect on my own behavior and focus on being kind and intentional in all of my interactions this week. I promptly failed when I was irritated by my husband’s sneezing while he was shaving before work and dramatically declared “I hate sneezing.” So… I’m a work in progress.

Here are my 3 shimmers of joy from this week:

Shoutout to Jonathan Embroidery. They saved me on Monday and did an excellent rushed job of embroidering 102 hats. If you need anything embroidered, I highly recommend using them.

My husband and I had dinner with the priest that married us. Every time we get together with Father Y, I feel that giddy nostalgia of our wedding day and am oriented back to gratitude and focusing on what really matters.

I made it to the gym to lift weights 3 times this week. I blasted music and did 3 exercises on repeat with a 20 minute timer going. It’s far from the fantasy in my head where I workout for 1 full hour as hard as possible and have perfect wash board abs. But it’s consistency and sets me up for a better day.

Until next week xx be well

Ordinary Girl is a reader-supported publication. The conclusion I have come to: everyone has to do it and few people like it. There is always laundry to do. I see our local dry cleaner more than I see my closest friends. Somehow my hair is always on our bathroom floor no matter how many times I use our hand held vacuum to suck it up. The only hack I have is to take it one task at a time. If I think about everything at once, I’m overwhelmed. But with an organized to do list and a little grace, I can tackle it all one step at a time.

My other solution is indulging in a blueberry muffin for breakfast. I’ve written about the toxic diet culture my generation grew up in. I’ve demonized blueberry muffins since Dunkin’ Donuts started listing the calories in them. High school me would stare at that 500+ number and think, well how will I ever manage to eat only 1,500 calories if my muffin is already 500. God forbid I don’t have protein for breakfast. Yesterday morning I wanted a blueberry muffin so I marched my way to Ole & Steen near my office to indulge. Every bite was blissfully delicious. I have zero regrets. When being an adult feels hard, try the blueberry muffin trick.

Here are my three shimmers of joy from my week:

There is a new gelato place, il laboratorio del gelato in our neighborhood. It is fresh, clean, lit with the right lighting that makes you feel good about yourself staring in the mirror. 11/10 recommend it for anyone who lives on the Upper East Side or anywhere in NYC.

I had a wonderful conversation a few weeks ago about all of the bad startup ideas I’ve had. My latest fixation: a helmet for private conversations. There are many times I have wanted to take a phone call without being overheard while walking the streets of New York City or in my office. I can never properly determine if I’m screaming while wearing AirPods or if no one can hear anything I’m saying. Our office phone booths are not sound proof enough for when I need to rant about any number of ways I’m dissatisfied with spending my day writing and researching AI when I am team human, team community, team let’s minimize screen time and not team agent or team robots. I imagine the helmet similar to the helmets the NYPD officers wear in parades but you can pick your color and accessorize as you like. Like Crocs or the latest iPhone… but different. Have you had any bad startup ideas? I’d love to hear them.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" What a few months it has been. I battle with sharing authentically while mindful of dumping my raw emotions out on the internet for anyone to read. The TLDR I’m comfortable sharing is that 2026 presented me with the greatest challenge I’ve ever faced: crippling clinical depression. It has rocked me and broken me down in ways I didn’t know possible. I’m still not completely myself. I started TMS therapy this week which I jokingly refer to as “going to get my brain shocked.” But I’m doing miles better than I was and for that, I am insanely grateful.

My experience with depression robbed me of a lot but one of the hardest parts has been the self-doubt, the self-consciousness, the self-criticism. I archived all of my previous blog posts on here because I kept telling myself I stunk at writing. I told myself everyone is thinking I’m inconsistent, I am not writing about anything meaningful, no one cares. (No one is thinking about me, everyone is thinking about themselves). I have to remember that thoughts can be false. But a clouded, depressed brain clings to any negative view of self.

So I’m back and excited to be writing. I’m committing to writing to you all every Friday. I know that with consistency, I’ll get better at writing. And with time, I’ll come back to myself.

Here are my three shimmers of joy from my week:

Attending <a
