over the years i have gotten really good at reading a room before i even fully enter it. i’d call myself an expert in pre-planning conversations, reminding myself to make eye contact, smile, greet people, and act as if i’m in an excellent mood even when fighting [and mostly losing] an internal battle with anxiety and burnout. i would selectively decide beforehand the way i speak, laugh, interact and pick out the appropriate personality; however fragmented, invented and aspirational, i curated my ideal self for the occasion and hid the other bits like accessories i decided not to wear.

i thought this was self-awareness. an extreme type, maybe, but nothing that could actually be harmful, right? well, it turns out there is a difference between choosing what to reveal and believing parts of yourself aren’t worthy enough to share.

that difference is what we are exploring in this essay.

i have seen a lot of talk about “being yourself” vs. “performing,” as if it’s a single switch →

• on or off

• authentic or fake

but i don’t think it’s that simple.

in all truth, existence in modern days requires everyone to perform.

• perform the perfect:

  • parent

  • partner

  • sibling

  • employee

  • person

who doesn’t want to be perceived as their best self, right? we’ve all heard the “fake it till you make it” quote and mentality, which asks you to pretend you know what you’re doing even if you fundamentally do not.

it’s not even bad advice on its own. sometimes confidence is built by performing it before you’ve really, truly earned or felt it. sometimes performing competence is just practice.

& that’s not what this essay is about.

this essay analyzes the moment when performing stops being a tool for survival and becomes a crutch you rely on permanently. a crutch that ultimately prevents you from actualizing as your true self.

it seems that society’s obsession with framing everything as authentic vs. performative makes it impossible to discern masking from being disingenuous.

so what is masking, really?

masking, in the traditional clinical sense, is a survival response. it’s when the nervous system decides that safety requires a disguise. a kind of personality camouflage that helps you blend in. it’s not for vanity, cool points, or an effort to mislead and manipulate. at its core, it’s a person who’s learned that the unfiltered version of themselves was too much, too messy, or too inconvenient to be presented without alterations.

being disingenuous is something else entirely. it’s not masking for protection; rather, it’s a deliberate decision to present as something separate from yourself for the sake of convenience. it’s intentionally hiding your true thoughts, motives, or feelings while pretending to be open and honest.

then there is the third, darker side of identity curation:

manipulation.

people who intentionally deceive others in this way put on a fake personality as bait. manipulation is a weapon where the ultimate goal is external control.

the manipulator wants to alter your behavior, choices, emotions, or perception of reality to serve their own agenda.

i’ve never had to do the work of forgiving myself for wearing an intentionally manipulative mask. but i did have to forgive myself for falling for the face of someone who was... more than once. it’s human nature to assume most people think and feel as we do by default.

everyone starts out as a good person with good intentions, or so we want to believe. wanting to see the good in people has often led me to making excuses, justifying behavior as fear or stress. this cognitive distortion only led me to protect the image and feelings of someone whose intentions were to harm me, emotionally or otherwise.

the cost of inauthentic performance, & the way back

we described three different types of masks, all with different faces and intentions underneath them.

masking protects the self that learned it wasn’t safe unfiltered.

the self pays for that: burnout, and the loneliness of never truly being known.

• being disingenuous protects an image at the expense of authentic, vulnerable connection.

• manipulation protects an ill-intentioned agenda of deception and control.

the difference is less about the mask and more about who it was protecting, and why. most people wearing a mask can’t tell you what it’s made of; just that it’s heavy, and they’ve stopped noticing they’re carrying the weight of it.

you usually don’t clock the cost of wearing a mask the moment you put it on. the debt sneaks up on you over time, chipping at pieces of your true self till it’s so fragmented you don’t know where the mask ends and your true self begins.

this brings me back to the version of myself i still fight with, the one that feels the need to shrink to fit comfortably in a room. i have learned since then:

social discernment does not need to be performance, or an invented self. it could simply be reservation; not from shame, but from social-emotional intelligence.

maybe not every person needs to or deserves to see the more vulnerable, complex parts of you. but that doesn’t mean you need to make a fake, inauthentic version of yourself either. you can be yourself without handing over everything.

reservation is not a mask; it is a boundary. a mask replaces you, while a boundary decides how much of you a room has earned.

that distinction changed the question i’d been asking myself for years. instead of putting the pressure on myself to “be fully open or perform,” i learned to be selectively honest rather than selectively fake. to say less without inventing more. to let silence hold the space where a curated personality created from shame, fear of rejection, and low self-esteem used to live.

i think that is the actual work:

becoming someone who protects herself without having to disappear to do it.

that version of me who rehearses conversations in the car still isn’t gone. she still shows up sometimes, still wants to be early & concoct pre-planned conversations.

but i don’t let her write the whole script anymore.

i let her hold the door, and then i walk in as myself.

that is the difference i was looking for the whole time. not authentic vs. performative.

but;

discernment without shame.

Before Earthe Urban was even a concept, it was a woman who never met an era she wouldn’t borrow from.

My grandmother was the most eclectic person I have ever known, though she would never have used that word.

She would have said she liked what she liked.

Her home held things that had no business belonging together, like her precious glass dolphin collection beside African figurines, across from Buddha sculptures.

but somehow the room always resolved, because what held it together was never a single style. It was her.

She made things with her hands not just as a hobby but as a way of self-expression and building the world as she sees it: if she could imagine it, she could make it, and if she couldn’t buy it, she could make something better. She mixed eras because her imagination was wider than any single one.

I understood, much later, that I had grown up watching a philosophy.

There is an old Greek word, eklektikos, that means to select or to pick out.

The first people it described were philosophers who refused to join a single school of thought. They read everything, kept what rang true, and built a way of thinking that belonged to no doctrine but their own.

The world has always been a little suspicious of people like that. because we tend to be uncomfortable with things that don’t fit neatly into one category. We like labels because they make the world easier to understand.

My grandmother never felt the need to choose just one way of being. You could see that the moment you walked into her living room.

She borrowed freely. From different eras, different styles, different ideas of beauty. None of it felt out of place because it all belonged to her.

& i resonate with that

To pick, a niche, an aesthetic, a personality legible enough to be marketed to. You’ve watched the culture sort women into single-serving identities:

the clean girl, the boho girl, the it girl of the season; & you’ve tried some of them on, & they all fit like borrowed clothes.

it’s not because you lack taste. But rather, your taste transcends any category society tries to fit you in.

You might be the woman with Sade & Tyler in the same rotation, incense burning next to a stack of essays, with vintage pieces, handmade crafts scattered throughout your home like your own personal museum. None of it happened by accident.

the comfort, the crutch

weed has been my soft place to land for years.

she’s shown up when i couldn’t.

when my mind was loud, when my body was tight, when the world felt too much.

but lately i’ve been asking myself if she’s helping me heal or just helping me hide.

according to the national institute on drug abuse, about 3 in 10 daily users develop a cannabis use disorder. it’s not that everyone becomes addicted, it’s that the brain starts to forget how to self-soothe without the substance.

and i felt that.

every time i reached for my lighter instead of my journal.

every time i called it “self-care” when it was really avoidance with pretty lighting.

not a hate letter to weed.

just a love letter to my clarity.

why quitting is so damn hard



because i romanticize my trauma and then roll it up.

because life is ghetto, and weed makes it feel like a film with better lighting.

because when my brain is screaming, it’s the only thing that presses mute.

weed gives an instant dopamine boost:

studies from jama psychiatry show it spikes reward pathways for a few hours, then slowly drops baseline dopamine levels over time. that means the more you smoke, the harder it gets to feel good naturally.

so the high gets shorter.

and the emptiness after? gets much MUCH louder.

the moment it clicked



i didn’t hit rock bottom. i just got tired.

tired of feeling productive without producing.

tired of being “busy” in circles.

i used to tell myself i wrote better high. but mostly i just rearranged fonts for three hours.

when i realized i had proof of consistency—in smoking—but not in showing up for myself, something shifted.

weed wasn’t ruining my life, but it was quietly running it.

so i said: let’s just take a month.

thirty days to remember who i am without the haze.

not forever. just for clarity.

the scary sh*t no one talks about



no one tells you how loud your thoughts get when you stop numbing them.

a clinical psychology review (2020) found that when we suppress emotions, the body stores that tension; remove the buffer, and everything surfaces.

and i’ve been feeling everything.

the guilt. the missed time. the stuff i said i’d process later.

it’s ugly but honest.

and it’s teaching me how to breathe instead of burn.

i’m not swearing off weed forever.

i just don’t want it making decisions for me.

self-respect is knowing the difference between needing and choosing.

the substance use & misuse journal (2021) notes that habitual daily users often score higher on measures of dependence—even if they don’t consider themselves addicted—because tolerance rewires choice into reflex.

so i’m retraining my reflexes.

not to be anti-weed.

just pro-me.

building a new ritual that loves me back



my old ritual was: lighter, playlist, escape.

my new one is: tea, playlist, arrival.

there’s still music. still smell. still softness.

but now it ends in progress instead of paralysis.

a study from stanford’s behavior design lab says creating an alternate routine during withdrawal doubles success rates. my alternate routine looks like:

• peppermint tea instead of a blunt

• incense instead of smoke

• writing 10 minutes before scrolling

• a deep breath instead of a deep hit

tiny swaps. real shifts.

you don’t need to call it addiction if that word stings.

just ask: does this thing have more control over me than i want it to?

signs to check in with yourself:

– using daily “just to cope”

– spending more than you plan

– doing it even when it gets in the way of goals

Like yeah. That’s exactly what this is.

This weird, raw dissonance where my heart is broken but I feel happy.

Like grief and hope are dancing together in my chest.

I’m 27. I just got fired from my job.

Rent is due in seven days.

And I don’t even know if the new job I was supposed to start is still mine, because I procrastinated the online training, and now the deadline’s passed. I saw the email yesterday. It said the training had to be done by 8 a.m. today. It’s 1:30 now.

I should be panicking, right?

But I’m not.

That’s the strange part.

I feel… calm. Like deeply, bizarrely calm.

And I don’t know if that’s faith or numbness or full-body surrender—but I do know that it doesn’t feel like avoidance.

It feels like honesty.

Like, “This is where I’m at. This is what it is. And I’m still okay.”

A couple weeks ago, I told myself I was done smoking and drinking.

And for a little while, I actually meant it.

But life’s been beating my ass lately, and honestly? I gave in.

So yeah, I’ve been drinking. I’ve been smoking.

And no, I’m not proud of it. But I’m not shaming myself either.

This is survival right now.

This is softness.

This is giving myself grace when it’s easy to choose guilt.

I went through a soft heartbreak recently.

It wasn’t long maybe a month and a half of talking; but it was deep.

Spiritual. Emotional. Intellectual.

One of those rare connections where you just know you’re both being seen in ways that don’t happen often.

And he ended it. He said the distance was too much.

Maybe it was.

But part of me feels like that wasn’t the whole story. Like he was trying to spare my feelings.

And even though it hurt, I asked for clarity. I told him I felt the shift.

He gave me closure.

I gave him grace.

And I let him go… not with bitterness, but with love. With softness.

Off a dating app I barely respond to.

And that’s the same way I met the last one. And the one before that.

All these out-of-state men and soul ties I didn’t ask for.

I’m not trying to romanticize it. I don’t even know if this new person will mean anything.

But the timing felt poetic.

Like life was reminding me: this isn’t the end of anything.

It’s just the next turn.

Letting myself be messy, and soft, and real.

And then… I’m getting back up.

Because even if I fumbled the job, even if I’m broke, even if I’m kind of self-sabotaging right now I know this isn’t where the story ends.

The Turning Point

A few weeks ago, I got baptized.

Not for tradition. Not for anyone else.

But because something in me was ready to be reborn fully, consciously, without apology.

I’ve been carrying so much. Habits I’ve outgrown. Identities I didn’t choose. Emotions I never released.

And while I’ve started over many times before, this time feels different.

I’m no longer interested in forcing change. I’m not here to hustle my way into a new life.

I’m choosing alignment. I’m choosing clarity. I’m choosing devotion to myself in the most grounded, consistent, beautiful way I’ve ever known.

That looks like no more smoking to escape my thoughts.

No more drinking to numb my intuition.

No more shrinking or performing or pretending that I don’t know what I really want.

My Starting Point

I’m not starting this journey with everything perfectly lined up.

In fact, a lot of things feel uncertain right now.

I just lost the job that was supposed to help me save for a new car and my current car feels like it’s on borrowed time. I don’t know how many more miles it has in it, but I’m learning to be grateful for every one.

I start a new job at the end of the month, but these next two weeks feel sacred. I’ve decided to dedicate them to laying the foundation for the life I want building my brand, creating content consistently, and setting up systems that will sustain me when things get busier again.

It’s not always easy. Some days doubt creeps in. Not because I don’t believe in myself, but because even confident women have insecure moments. I’ve been carrying the weight of a soft heartbreak. Nothing dramatic just enough to remind me I’ve been giving energy to the wrong direction.

So I’m bringing it all back to center. Back to me.

I’ve been reworking my morning routine. Practicing gratitude even when it feels forced. Meditating. Breathing. Trying to stay present when my mind wants to wander or spiral or escape.

I have ADHD, and time management has never been my strong suit. I can get lost in deep work just not always on the right things. And I’m tired of letting whole days pass without moving the needle on what I know matters most.

I want to stop procrastinating.

I want to hold space for my creativity.

I want to build real confidence not just self-love quotes, but belief that’s rooted in discipline and follow-through.

And I want to share this whole process with you. Even when it’s messy. Even when I don’t have the answers yet.

Because if you’re anything like me, you’re not looking for perfection.

You just want to know you’re not alone in the becoming.

There is nothing more exhausting than loving a man who is incapable of loving you back.

But let’s be honest—you already know.

You feel it in your gut. In the way you shrink yourself, over-explain, make excuses, and hold onto potential instead of reality.

I know because I’ve been there. Deeply self-aware but still stuck. Thinking that if I understood him, I was in control. Thinking that if I was patient enough, loving enough, understanding enough—maybe this time, he’d change.

But here’s the truth: the more you tolerate, the worse it gets.

A man will never respect a woman who does not respect herself. And the more you excuse his behavior, the more he will push the boundaries—until you don’t recognize yourself anymore.

So let’s get real. If you see yourself in these 11 signs, it’s time to stop waiting, stop rationalizing, and start leaving.

You deserve more.

1. He’s ‘Emotionally Unavailable’—But Never Too Unavailable for the Things He Wants

Let’s be clear: men are not emotionally unavailable for the things they value.

• The same man who “can’t express his emotions” will write a 3-paragraph rant about his favorite basketball team losing.

• The same man who “needs space” will spend hours playing video games with his boys.

• The same man who “isn’t ready for a relationship” will wife up the next girl without hesitation.

Emotional unavailability is not a condition—it’s a choice. And if a man is choosing not to show up for you, you need to believe him.

2. He Treats You Like an Option, Not a Priority

A man who wants you will make it known. There will be no mixed signals, no guessing games, no wondering where you stand.

But if he:

• Only calls when he’s bored or lonely

• Never makes concrete plans (but somehow has time for everything else)

• Keeps you in a situationship with no direction

• Is inconsistent with effort but expects you to be constant in patience

Sis, he does not see you as a priority.

And if he doesn’t see you as a priority, why are you treating him like one?

3. He Talks About His “Crazy Ex” (And You’ll Be Next)

A man who constantly talks about how “crazy” his ex was is waving a massive red flag in your face.

• If every ex was toxic…why did he keep dating them?

• If every woman did him wrong…why is there never any self-reflection?

• If he has zero accountability for past relationships, guess what? You will be the next “crazy ex” in his story.

Men like this are masters of revisionist history. They rewrite the past to avoid accountability, and when this relationship ends (because it will), he will do the same to you.

4. He’s Not Building Anything—He’s Just Existing

A man with no ambition, no discipline, and no desire to grow will become dead weight in your life.

• If he spends all his free time smoking, gaming, or scrolling but has no plan for his future, he’s not a man—you’re raising a grown child.

• If he jumps from job to job, always blaming “bad luck” or “bad managers,” you will eventually become the next thing he resents.

• If he has no vision for himself, he cannot build anything with you.

You don’t need a perfect man. But you do need a man who has a plan for his life and is actively working toward it. Otherwise, he will drag you down with him.

5. He Thinks ‘Providing’ Is Enough—But He Lacks Emotional Maturity

A man who thinks that paying bills is the only requirement for being a good partner is a man who has never learned how to love properly.

• He believes that throwing money at problems is a substitute for communication.

• He expects praise for the bare minimum—while neglecting the emotional needs of the relationship.
