length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

I’ve always wanted to be an art gallery gal. Sometimes, when I’m paralyzingly bored and lying on my bed staring up at the ceiling thinking about the various lives I wish to live, I imagine myself in a long skirt, a halter top, a secretly-artsy-statement-piece bag, large hoops and wild bangs, exploring all of the art galleries in the world. In most of these fantasies, I’m listening to my 80s rock playlist (my outfit must not reveal my music taste) and being looked at by everyone in the room. In most of these fantasies, the paintings and sculptures are the background orchestra and I’m the art people sit on benches to admire.

Of course none of this had ever played out in real life. So when, a few days ago, my friend Roro asked me if I’d like to go to Defense Colony’s famous Art Night, I decided it was now time to change that. I was ready to take my flirtations with The Gaze to the next base.

By the time Roro and I reached the first gallery, I was the woman of my fantasies: my lips were blood-clot red, my hair messily rain-kissed, and my eyes had lost their tiredness owing to the fantastic coffee Roro and I had downed right before. I had settled on my comfortable but flattering black cargos (delhi rains would’ve ruined my skirt), a knitted sleeveless green top that fit like a glove and was sexily translucent, and a hippie (but not on your face hippie) patterned bag. Basically, I was unstoppable. The heavens were pouring divine confidence on me, sprinkled in their rain. I was their masterpiece of the day. I would walk into the gallery and all of the brilliant pieces of art would suck in a breath and fix their Gazes on me: the most brilliant piece of art. The Master of all pieces.

Except, when I did walk into XXL, our first stop, I was eclipsed. Everywhere I looked I saw perfection. The wise posters on the wall either said, in the sluttiest voice imaginable, things like “Free Thinker! Paid 0$ per hour!” and “Fuck your praxis! Where’s your theory?” or simply posed in color-coordinated rulers. Books in all colors and shapes lazily stretched on the tables and animated zines sat on polished wooden shelves. I tried to talk to them: “So, what are you?”, “What are you trying to say?”, “What can you possibly give to me this fine day?”, but they gazed back at me with only haughty disinterest.

I did manage to have a heartfelt rendezvous with a charcoal poem anthology lying in the middle of corner, but this rendezvous was interrupted by my awareness of The Gaze on me and so in straightening my bag, patting down my frenzy hair, and tracing my nails around my lips to fix any possible lipstick smudging, I had lost my Charcoal. It refused to speak to me thereafter. I felt like a dirty rain puddle on the street: so shallow. Sacrificing my new friend for The Gaze! The shallowest of them all. Not beautiful. Ugly. Smudged lipstick ugly. Kajal at the corner of my eyes ugly. Ugly-ly fake Ug-

I found Roro talking to the gallery manager so feigned a quiet absorption of my own except all of the other pieces in the room had turned away from me. All I could do was wait for him to be free so we could whisk off to another gallery. Another attempt, or perhaps a trial?

Our next stops were beautiful (quite good, but not master) too. We made 3 friends on the hop: an engineer intern in Noida, a 2nd year liberal arts student, and an artist who had spent 1.5 years on perhaps one of the most incredible paintings I’ve ever seen, but lost me as quickly as he had me when he answered, “yeah I’m cool” with no light whatsoever in his eyes, to my question, “does it (the painting) feel complete to you? are you fully satisfied?”. Dear reader, you may find this ridiculous but truly think for a second and tell me if any artist is ever satisfied with their art once it’s complete. The right to creation comes with the great consequence of never being loyal to what you create.
I’m a fully formed individual and my parents aren’t satisfied with me. I’m never satisfied with my fully-formed poems and essays and paintings and games. Why else would all the great artists in the world leave their supposedly greater works in these odd-looking rooms instead of holding them as close as possible to their hearts in hopes that their arteries would swallow them whole so they will never be apart again?
All of these pieces were quite good indeed, but not master. I, too, had always been quite good. But a rain puddle could never be master.

Roro and I saw some of our college batchmates and tried our best to steer our paths away. We mostly succeeded. I saw my favorite ex’s ex-talking stage (the girl he was talking to while also talking to me) and thought, as I had the first time I had seen her near DU, that she was insanely beautiful. We made eye contact. I felt like a voyeur. Did not look away. Wondered if she thought I was beautiful too. Wondered if all of the people at the gallery thought I was beautiful too. Felt like a shallow rainwater puddle. Tadpoles learn how to swim in me, I thought. People wince when passing cars push me towards them, I thought. I’m dirty and muddy and too goddamn small, the ugliest in this room filled with oceans, I thought.

Not beautiful. Ugly. SO shallow, stop it please. Beauti- stop it. Please!
Except I couldn’t. Couldn’t stop. Not anymore. I found myself staring at a moving miniature casket titled ‘Punishment’. Yet again, I couldn’t look away. The casket kept swinging
back and forth,
like a
pendulum.
I couldn’t look away. My eyes moved back and forth. I was under a spell. The casket was rusted, but it had holes in it. Not quite big, not very small.
I thought would I escape The Gaze if I could fit myself inside it? If I could be not quite big, not very small. If I could make myself barely visible swingingly. If I could see it all without being seen. If I could become The Gaze. If-I couldn’t breathe. The room had contracted, morphed into a rusty casket. It had very few holes. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t breathe. The whole world was swinging back and forth like a pendulum. Held onto empty air for balance. Unmoored.

A girl walked into the edges of my vision. She was wearing a long skirt, a halter top, a secretly-artsy-statement-piece bag, large hoops and had wild bangs. I thought she was beautiful. A Masterpiece. She caught my gaze and held it. I sent her a smile, she sent one back. I wanted to sit on the bench of the world and keep looking at her looking at me but she looked away, towards the casket. Her eyes moved back and forth. She was under a spell. I would know.

I wondered how miniature caskets could float on rain puddles on the street.

in your preparation for being looked at, i hope you’re also doing the looking

how to checkmate a ghost

i know you will read this. you are, after all, the Great Ghost of my life, the Grand Lurker. i don’t know what stories you’ve been telling the world, but stay and listen to mine.

jiyaa

In my head there’s an encrypted folder containing files of every moment with you that broke me. The files have:
a) multiple snapshots of your empty eyes as you told me you loved me,
b) all the things you swore I had said to you even though I couldn’t, for the life of me, remember even thinking,
c) every single lie you carried for months but denied the existence of when I’d ask you about it again and again (the moral of trusting your intuitions is timeless) until life would reveal it to me and you’d make yourself the victim, me the aggressor
d) the horrendous words you called your friends even as you chose their comfort over mine in the next breath, and finally-
e) your self-claimed nonchalance and your utter cowardice

A year later, I feel unexplained things and have formless emotions that I’m scared to acknowledge because what if I’m not remembering things correctly? What if my memory really is as fucked as you had made me think it was? I visit this folder almost every second day (a win: it was every hour until a few months ago) to prove to myself that what I feel is valid, real, tangible, born from something external to the malicious pits of my mind. I feel hate, by the way. They say there’s a thin line between love and hate: I think they’re wearing rose-colored lenses. Once you reach hate, there’s no going back to love. Love changes shape. You, a spineless shapeshifter, would understand this the most.

I wonder if perhaps all of the incidents I’ve collected and carefully saved over the years to allow myself to feel irreparably hurt by you don’t capture the whole picture. My narrative is just mine, and I know in yours I’m the aggressor and you the victim because your narratives only ever allow you to play the role of the victim. Do your friends, the ones you spoke horribly about while posting grandiose emotional stories for, know what you did to me? Do they know you’re a pathological liar who can destroy the sanity of a person just by telling them you love them even as your eyes say otherwise? By telling them you can’t imagine yourself with anyone else two hours before you put your mouth on all the ‘anyone elses’ in your vicinity? Where do your lies end, where does the truth begin? Where? Where? File number please?

Sometimes I think I’m crazy. My mind is not my own, my heart is not my own either. I loved you once, and so I can’t trust myself to do it again. It took me a year to let someone in, and their entry too was restricted to the shallow waters of my self: my body. My body is simpler, easier. It feels desire, moves in sex, then moves on. I like simpler, easier now, even though it is so out of reach. In my head I’m sitting in front of a chessboard, analyzing the same game over and over again. Once you sat in front of me and the game was called life. Now the chair opposite me is empty and the game is called you. In my head all I am is a child stuck in the small 64 squares that once contained universes.
Most times, I wish I were crazy.

Anyways, there are some things you should know:
a) I memorized your number before I removed your contact from my phone so if you ever call me, I will know and I will cut it.
b) Sometimes I stay up at night wondering how you could ever do anything like that. You. I’m ashamed of the fact that I claimed to have known you, no, I do not know you at all. You are, indeed, a pathological liar, and you tricked me beautifully so congratulations! Good job! A pat on the back is well-deserved.
c) Yes, I’m aware of how pathetic all of this is. I would care too, if I didn’t care about myself.
d) Before you make any of this about yourself, as you undoubtedly will in your endless vanity, I wish to tell you that this is not about you at all.

Every word I write lately begs me to tell what I felt during and after you. I begin to write about rivers and politics and somehow, the last paragraph dissolves into a series of murmurings and curses and wordy tears about the glass you stabbed into my skin. I write stories about a girl who flew with the wind, and somehow in between the lines, you become the wind and I become the trees that cannot ever fly. So I stopped writing. But even in my head when poems, essays, notes, songs take shape, your ghost sneaks in and corrupts them. Of all the things you took away from me, I cannot let you take this away too. My words are everything to me. They are what I had before I had anything at all. They are what I will have after I will have everything there is. In comparison, you are nothing.

So I’m farting you out of my mind, and though this fart will be really smelly I will open the windows and let the sun in and light my mother’s incense sticks and sprinkle rose water all over myself and everything will be all right after.
It is the after I’m chasing. Not you. It is me I’m chasing. Never you.

Off you go, then!
I double-click the encrypted folder I had nurtured this past year and throw it into the recycle bin. Then I open the recycle bin and empty it into the abyss. I know it will come to haunt me, as Great Ghosts do (*winks at you*), but I don’t fear ghosts anymore. They were scarier when they were alive in my life.

most of my posts are soul-searching experiments. if you like that, im your gal!

who the fuck is alice??

about a funky first date, a familial drunken crisis, and as always, love

jiyaa

Hinge Boy (hereafter referred to as HB) found my massi, her boyfriend, her 3 colleagues, and me (his hinge girl) drunk out of our wits outside a bustling Delhi pub.

We hadn’t ever met before. His first introduction to me was me patting my very emotional massi’s back and telling her she’s the greatest aunt in the universe. I was also intensely blind. When I saw a silhouette of black walking in our direction, I waved frantically, said “hey! it’s me! im jiyaa! you must be HB!” and immediately returned to consoling massi.

I was very excited to meet him but the events of the night hadn’t been the most ideal for a first date. Still, instead of cancelling directly, I had issued a few warnings to him beforehand:
a) everyone’s quite drunk (so you don’t have to meet me today)
b) you and i are definitely not sexing (if that’s why you want to meet me today) c) my aunt’s having a breakdown (let’s not meet today?)

His answers to all of these warnings were incredibly satisfying:
a) that’s okay with me if it’s okay with y’all!
b) no no omg im just really giddy to meet you, my intentions are innocent!
c) darling, i’ll drop you to your bnb at the very least. please don’t overthink.

He was a nice looking man with a really sweet smile. Massi trusted him instantly, I did too. As soon as he sat down beside me, he had been roped into her crisis and was a willing calmer. Massi shared her life story with him in her extremely drunken state, and he responded enthusiastically with questions that got her to talk. I’d chime in with the occasional “hey I’m so sorry about this, you can genuinely leave whenever” and he’d follow all of these up with a calming shoulder rub, many “darling”s (not nearly enough), and “shh all’s good! I’m glad I’m here”.

We have the same weakness, massi and I—you give us a nice smile and a kind listener and we’re liquid on the floor.

Eventually, we found our way to his car. I called shotgun, massi’s boyfriend opened the windows to smoke a cig (after asking HB for permission), and my lovely massi’s crisis continued. We had to make a pitstop on the way because she needed to puke. With utmost sincerity, HB offered her a spare shirt he had in the car and also some water.

I was gobsmacked. I was gaping at him with my jaw on the floor and my eyes as wide as UFOs. He was laughing and saying the right things and my brain was losing it. Who is this man? This strangely lovely exception of his… species?? How could any man be this intuitive and calm in the face of utmost chaos??? When’s he going to show me his true colors? For a second I considered the possibility that perhaps I was too blind and he was actually a woman.

HB asked us what song we’d want to listen to. Between sniffles, massi said, “Who the Fuck is Alice”. He looked at her, as gobsmacked as me, and showed me his top search on Spotify: “Who the Fuck is Alice”.
That was my introduction to Smokie.

Sally called, when she got the word
She said, “I suppose you’ve heard”
“About Alice”

The rest of the ride, I wondered who Alice was. Was she your girl next door? Or was she so much more? Was she the woman you fantasize about your entire life and her idea becomes so real that she ceases to matter? Who is Alice to HB? Who is Alice to massi? She must be something to them, I thought as the song rolled to an end, because she certainly had become something to me.

We reached our BNB. I invited HB upstairs. What followed was a little more emotional caretaking, massi’s bf taking her to their bedroom to sleep, and me taking HB to my bedroom to… talk. Massi’s bf offered us condoms, massi looked at HB and said, “no matter how drunk I am and how nice I think you are, you lay one finger on my daughter and I will find you”. He responded with a laugh and I responded with a “one finger hardly does the trick anyways!”.

In my room, he said, “okay so in my head we’re totally engaged” because he was surely the first guy in a non-platonic equation with me who had met her! I burst his bubble by revealing that my massi had met all of my exes. He sighed dramatically. I shook my head and asked “but if that really is the case, where is my ring?”. He made a great show of looking inside his pockets, then took my hand, removed the ring I was already wearing on my middle finger, put it on my ring finger and smiled triumphantly. I responded with a gag face.

We talked a lot. We made out a bit. Shared our views on relationships and non-serious sex. I told him I’ve always felt relief after my relationships have ended (the pain and the sadness, yes, but oh the relief). He seconded that. We made out a lot. He asked me if I’m fucked up.
I said: aren’t you?

After some moments of cozy quiet, he told me he had never actually opened up about so many things with anyone else. I just smiled and thought about my friends, sisters, and the woman snoring in the other room.

HB left around 5am. I didn’t ask him if he’d like to stay. After seeing him off, I opened the curtains a bit and listened to ‘Who the fuck is Alice’ on repeat. He texted me when he had reached and thanked me for an epic day. I thanked him back. I thought about Alice some more.

Massi came to my room around 8am with a loud “DID YOU HAVE SEX”, a steaming mug of chai, and some namkeen. I said, “NO WHAT IS SEX!!!” and we laughed forever. The chai was really good, the namkeen even tastier. After a quick recap of the night, we realized both of us were wildly blind and our specs were missing. Squinting, we looked everywhere— under the sofas, beds, inside the refrigerator, on the toilet seat, in the dustbins. We napped and then resumed our search. I called HB, he checked his car and couldn’t find them there. We called the pub and they told us their glasses weren’t for sale.

I had never before lost my specs, I told massi. There’s always a first for everything, she chimed back.

On our way back home, we cracked some spec-tacular jokes:
a) were you ex-spec-ting this????
b) our speculation has led us nowhere!
c) we MUST in-spect this whole thing when we’re sober!

I asked her what she thought about Alice. She looked at me, giggled, and said, “who the FUCK is alice????”. We put on our serious faces. She said all of us are Alice in some way or the other. Maybe that’s why we cozy up to her so quickly. We’re all wondering who she is. I suggested that maybe we’re wondering how much of her we are. Wouldn’t we all like to be desired/thought of in our absence, in memory? She hmmed. I hmmed.

We talked about her boyfriend, HB and if I’d like to see him again, her colleagues, the food we had, our drunk senorita duet on the dance floor, the man who was trying to dance with me until she stepped on his toes and stifled his chances with a “glary oops sorry!”, our family, and our dear dear specs. I told her she should caption her trip dump, “best weekend ever! couldn’t see shit!”.

We spoke and spoke and spoke as delhi wrapped her smokey arms around us. We were squinting at the world, had no idea where we were, and if we’d get home safely because our gmaps were just colored lines. We still didn’t know where our specs had run off to (we were sure that they had planned it together, I still think there’s immense merit to this theory), or where life was taking us.

All I could see was massi, all massi could see was me, and so, we were quite alright :)

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" my dark room with a bloated stomach and a bloated mind. i wonder why i chose the floor today. why i seem to choose it all other days.

the idea of flying, of being in the sky somehow, has been a relentless compulsion to me. i remember wanting to be superman when i was a kid (never quite got the appeal of a bright red underwear used as an overwear though). i remember listening to the infinite stories the clouds would tell on my family’s road trips to jaipur from delhi when i was 5.
remember, even more vividly, the realization of an innate empathy for icarus when i read his story. a glaring confrontation with my most primal self when i saw 38 shooting stars one night in chail, right after completing high school and escaping the death rows of covid. the urge to be swept away by the strong raging winds on my college campus even as i feared them for their ferocity (or was it the ferocious need to be flown away that frightened me most?).

the sky has called to me for as long as i can remember,
and for longer,
i’ve answered back.

the strangeness in this is that even as i long for the ocean up above, my longing for the earth below emerges stronger in moments of sheer vulnerability. the first time i got my heart broken, i wept and wept on my bathroom floor as the shower coated me with hot water. the first time i got my periods and was at school, i sat in the middle of my corridor when the paralyzing cramps hit. the last time i got my heart broken, 3 layers later (and 1 year ago), the cold AC-touched floor of my room turned my tears to snowflakes. the same floor kissed my shining heart when i finally filled gold in its cracks.

it is to the floor that i return when the weight of my heart crushes my windpipe. it is with my body pressed entirely on the grass that i dream about making love to the stars.

then
if the sky is my prayer, is the earth not my home?

i look at the ceiling above me until it turns to dust.
my room is roofless and a blanketed night sky slumbers above.
i look
and look
until the layers of pollution
melt
away.

the sky is awake and thoroughly naked.
with the eyes of a lover threatening to eat my soul, her stars wink at me.

i look beyond,
as the spaces

i n b e t w e e n

envelop the world.
beyond the light rests the dark.
beyond the dark rests everything.
beyond everything is nothing.
i look into the eyes of nothing and turn to dust myself.

in the floating debris of my scattering consciousness, wonders a voice: if i’m the universe experiencing itself, is the sky not my home? is the earth not my answered prayer? how absurd it must be, then, to want all that i have already and ignore all that i wanted and found.

<div class="image-gallery-embed" interschool (and eventually interstate) competitions. most importantly, she was the first non-family person to become family (my dad calls her his fourth daughter). naturally, she was also the very first friend i had a sleepover with.

when we were 14, our sleepovers were a whirlwind of painted nails, movies, board games, and clicking an unhealthy amount of selfies. we would fantasize about our lives and talk about every possible thing in the world. we’d stay up all night, finally going to sleep only after the first rays of the sun.

now, 9 years later, minus the selfies and the all-nighters, those rituals remain intact, just slightly altered: our conversations have gotten heavier, our fantasies more realistic. last night, at our second sleepover of the year, we cautiously approached the topic of death.

cozy in our pyjamas and heavy with dinner, we were talking about an unshakable sense of wrongness in the world—the feeling that things aren’t the way they were supposed to be. no matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t think of ways to fix these issues because they appeared to have seeped into the very code of this universe. by this point, i was lying down and she was sitting beside me. both of us were looking at fixed points in the room to allow our thoughts to wander.

“what if we could prove the existence of God?” vee asked, her voice floating in the dark room.
“i don’t think it’d make things better,” i said. “god is so powerful because it’s an abstract idea. there’s nothing more powerful than ideas, not even their tangible form.”
she thought about other ways, i waited eagerly. “what if we found out what happens after death?”
“depends on what we find out.”
“say heaven and hell are real.”
“won’t people do good things just to get to heaven?” i argued, turning to look at her. “it makes their deeds selfish.”
“what’s wrong with being selfish if it makes the world a better place?”
“fair. but we’d always remain self-serving, and that’s surely not a good thing.”
“what if we find out that we’re reincarnated?” she countered.
“life would lose value. people would just kill themselves to try again.”
we descended into a quiet silence.
“what do you think happens after death?” i asked her.

vee took a long sip from the stanley cup she had purchased recently to increase her water consumption (it was working fantastically). “hmm” she said softly, “i think there’s nothing after death”. for her, death is an endless dreamless sleep. “isn’t that scary?” i asked her. she shrugged. she likes dreamless sleep; there’s nothing quite like it. for me, death isn’t an end, but another beginning. i told her i think i’m immortal. i know realistically that my body will die one day, but i can’t imagine not thinking, and thus not being. if i’m the cosmos experiencing itself, losing my body would probably just return me to my original form.
“that sounds like a lot of work though, why not just think of it as a dreamless sleep?” she wondered. i replied- “because isn’t waking up the point of going to sleep?”

i worried that her idea of death was too lonely, she worried that mine was too latched onto the self.

i asked if she would like to be burnt or cremated. she pointed out that they’re the same. oops! she wants to be buried. when i asked why she wouldn’t prefer being cremated as per our culture, she said she likes the idea of having a place her loved ones can come to to talk to her after she’s gone.
“plus, gravestones are pretty cool.”
for someone who thinks of death as nothingness, she wants to ensure we will always have somewhere to find her.
i felt very lucky to be loved by her.

i told her i want to be a tree after i’m dead. a “fuck you” to the permanence of all of it. i’d still be alive but in a different form and i’d be able to give my loved ones shade, space, love. she pointed out that i’d die again that way, i told her i didn’t mind. we shifted into a comfortable silence. after a while, i looked over to find her asleep, her specs still on. i shook her gently, told her to take them off, and we both drifted. my sleep was restless, filled with endless dreams that kept waking me up. but every time i did, i’d find her there, asleep beside me. nothing else mattered.

if death really is like falling asleep, i hope mine is filled with endless dreams. and i hope that when i do wake up, i find her there, right beside me.

kiaa, vee, and i went to a club last month. vee had gotten extremely drunk and i had only just let my hair down when kiaa found herself in the middle of a crisis. kiaa had lied to her family about where she’d be, vee and i had simply not told ours at all. to enjoy life as a woman in my city, lying to the parents is a requirement. there’s no way past it.

it was due to these bizarre conditions of the night (upon which i wouldn’t elaborate further because of their lack of relevance to this piece) that vee and i had found ourselves sitting on the staircase of the club’s rooftop while kiaa argued with her family about their overbearing nature. the occasional, “i’m 22!” and “this is exactly why i didn’t tell you about our plans!” would waft out of the conversation. the air was doing its best to keep us updated.

the staircase was pretty crowded, with people going up (towards the calmer restaurant vibes) and down (towards the vibrating walls of the club), and we weren’t the only ones who had chosen the stairs as our observation post. two guys were standing a few feet away from us, smoking cigarettes and looking at the world with dazed-squinted eyes. vee really needed to smoke, and so we went to them. the conversation unfolded in this manner:

vee: hey! hi guys, can i borrow a cigarette?
Weird Accent Guy: oh yeahhhh sure thingggg (hands her a cig)
vee: lighter too? for a sec
Normal Accent guy: here, let me light it for you
vee: thanks! so… what’s up?
Weird Accent Guy: ah nothing much mannnnnnnn. im soooooooo high.
(he had a super weird accent, it was driving me crazy)
vee: you have a really weird accent, where are you from?
Weird Accent Guy: i’m… from… everyyyyywhere!
me: hey from everywhere im-

(vee pulled me away from the conversation before i could crack this magnanimously amusing joke, hence the dramatic break.)

leaving Normal Accent and Weird Accent to their clubgazing, the three of us, undrunk and unhappy and un-every-good-emotion, went back to vee’s flat. the night hadn’t turned out as we had planned. kiaa was exhausted because of the suffocation in her life (instead of making out with a random stranger), i was fuming at the people who had caused this suffocation in kiaa’s life (instead of doing something recklessly stupid), and vee was softly caressing kiaa’s hands to express her solidarity (instead of dancing with her arms around our waists because she’s too short to reach our shoulders). but i was also thinking about Weird Accent, and not in the way you’d imagine.

the reason remains simple: how fucking lame is it to claim you’re from everywhere?

perhaps he was just high-babbling? or was he a traveler? but don’t travelers also have somewhere they’re from? maybe he was a Lucy fan? but he didn’t seem awakened to the mysteries of the universe at all. if anything, he was clearly escaping everything that it holds. more importantly, why was i being so harsh on him? because i wish i was from everywhere but i am not? because that is not possible but how’s it possible for him? so possible, in fact, that he could declare it so freely to a bunch of strangers?? i envied him greatly. i even tried it out myself:

Sister: where are u rn???
me: EVERYWHEREEEE!!!
Sister: are u drunk??? bro just send me ur live location

but there’s a huge difference between being somewhere and being from somewhere, and so i could never be as cool as him, because that’s what he had morphed into in my head: a cool being. a being i’d want to be one day. i was almost sure this day would never come at all.

since i was a child, i’ve lived my life with one foot out of every single room i’ve been in. these rooms have been four-walled enclosures, people, relationships, emotions, memories, and every other vessel we inhabit in our mortal lives to have some semblance of form. regardless of where i am, and for however long, my suitcase is always ready to go. my baggage is so organized that i live off it. in the time gone by, unpacking has only meant packing again unexpectedly, with the extremely high probability of gathering new, much heavier, material than all that i had let go of. since the load never becomes lighter anyway, i’ve stopped unpacking it at all.

despite this perennial weight, there has always been an unescapable tickle at the bottom of my feet to be anywhere but where i am at any moment. every place i’ve been is every place i’ve wanted to leave. i’m from nowhere. i envy and pity trees. unlike them, i do not have roots and that sucks. unlike them, i do not have roots and thus i can fly so thank fuck. i am a fallen leaf desperate to be separated from the tree that holds me, and if this means having my own wings for only a second, and eventually falling down and withering away, i do not mind. as long as i get to fly.

but as i write this and acknowledge what seems to be a hopelessly apparent flakiness in my approach to life, i’m still quite filled to the brim with envy of the man from everywhere. that incident reoriented my entire perception of myself. why do i want to be from everywhere so badly? was i not content with being from nowhere, and thus having the freedom to go wherever i wanted? could it be because i want to be everyone? because i want to be everything? i want to be everything to everyone? i want to be every now and every then? i want to carve out the flesh of the word ‘every’ and swallow it down my throat so it becomes inseparable from me? the man had established in his claim that he had all of these already.

vee and i have tried and tried since meeting him, to think of where he could be from. we’re familiar with very many accents all over the world (her especially, owing to her million discord friends), and none reminded us of his, as if he had come from a different planet altogether. if he truly was a traveler who had been to multiple places all over the world, there was no single place that stood out as his origin. in fact, he had no origin at all in our heads. does anything have an origin that is a locus? no, because the center is constantly shifting. it cannot be traced.

thus, in being the man from everywhere, he wasn’t from anywhere at all.

my reading of the conversation with Weird Accent has shifted tremendously just now. i’m thinking, maybe it wasn’t envy that i’ve been feeling this entire while. maybe it was recognition. an understanding. maybe it was looking into the mirror of the sky, and finding the faces of everyone in this world staring back at me.

<div class="image-gallery-embed" Kartikay, Sahana, and Vee are 23. Kiaa will be 23 in a few months. Agrima’s 23 will arrive at her doorstep a few days before Christmas.

We’ve known each other since forever, courtesy of living within 10 minutes of each other and going to the same school our entire lives. Our forever is so old that our parents remember our childhoods more clearly than we do, so by extension, the 6 of us have 6 pairs of parents (all as doting as they’re terrifying, but with shining love in their eyes). Sahana joined the bandwagon in 8th grade so her forever is the newest, but equally treasured.

11th grade brought us closer as a group and during COVID (12th grade) when our classroom conversations shifted to midnight Google Meet scribblr sessions, we experienced a collective “in the grand scheme of life, this is one of the places I’m forever meant to be in”. 5 years later, this feeling remains as strong and tangible as our awareness of being (sometimes… even stronger).

Current state (a bit about us):

I’m a poet and writer by heart, and currently working as an AI Language Trainer. The irony is not lost on me, unfortunately, and cripples me regularly. This account is an attempt at gaining some control over my life with my other childhood besties: words.

Kiaa is a bosswoman with her own lab-grown diamond business. She’s constantly in meetings, hustling all the time, and has a trunk load of health issues that send us all into bouts of stress.

Kartikay just completed his master’s in clinical psychology and is preparing for an entrance exam that might land him in another city, miles and miles away from us instead of the usual 6 minutes by auto and 15 minutes by walking (if I elaborate on what this makes me feel, the world will blur and so I shan’t).

Vee is completing her BA LLB and on her way to become a corporate lawyer soon!

Sahana is preparing for a top-notch government exam and gets moments of anxiety that turn her inside out. She pulls through always, with the help of her need to change the system caused by her strong hatred of it. And her 19732834936 billion skincare products.

Agrima is more absent than she’s present these days, but when she’s really present, her absence ceases to exist. She’s pursuing Hotel Management, consistently busy, hangs out with people we don’t know (and thus stronglyyyy envy), and rarely ever shows up to our group hangouts. But once in a blue moon, she sends us the loveliest paragraphs detailing how much she loves and misses us and all feels okay in the world.

We aren’t any different from other infant adults. We talk about loneliness, ambitions, dreams, careers, and our future obsessively whenever we meet. We also talk about exes, parents, siblings, friends, friends’ exes (and dustbin-atom-men). We talk about religion, the consistency of our pooping, the colors of our dog’s poops, spirituality, poetry, the changing sounds of our farts, art, stretch marks on our boobs (which kartikay pretends to not hear), politics, our schoolmates, men, women, Camus vs Sartre (Vee: I prefer absurdism over existentialism, it sounds funkier to me), new bedroom fantasies (which Kartikay pretends to not hear again), our schoolmates, and everything else that enters our world in whatever form and shape. Including our schoolmates :P

Most of all, we talk about the idea of ‘meaning’, struggle with it really. Questions such as “What am I supposed to do?”, “What am I supposed to be?”, “Who am I currently?”, and “Who am I becoming?” are the subtexts of much of this grand symphilosophizing.

So really, we aren’t any different from other infant adults. But we’re infant adults figuring out this whole adulting business together, and maybe that makes all the difference.

Anyway, here are my 2 cents (subject to change, but also not really): I think there’s no meaning in this world because “existence precedes essence” (Sartre 4eva!). I think we must create our own meaning. While I’m unsure of the serious bits of it, I think an important part of my meaning is love and I love my friends very very much. So, this substack is a love letter to them.

One they won’t receive for a while.

My dearest readers, can you keep a secret for me? ;)
