When you cold email an investor, it should never read like an essay. It needs to be quick, but still land with value. That starts with the subject line that grabs attention. Under 8 words, leading with traction, not the company name. “$41K MRR, raising $500K pre-seed” beats “Introduction: Company Name” every time.

Everything after that follows the same rule: specific beats generic. The opening line should say why this fits this investor, not just any investor. The body should reference their portfolio or thesis directly. And the whole email should stay under 150 words, because tight and personalized reads as respect for their time.

In 2010, venture capital had the “scale at any cost” mindset. This means growing as quickly as possible and worrying about the company’s quality later.

Many female founders were given millions of dollars to start their businesses and grow as much capital as possible. When they failed, however, it was a reflection of them as a person rather than the company itself.

This boils down to the facts: women aren’t less ambitious. They are less funded, less sponsored, and way less supported than a male in any industry.

Every 10 years, a woman is expected to fit a new aesthetic to perform in. With this unrealistic expectation, it is important to rely more on your skills and mind to maintain your success rather than external expectations.

It is important that when entering any sort of business meeting, you are fully prepared.

Start with is having pre-planned data and insights ready to be requested. It is always best to look overprepared on the company’s practices so you look like the best person to do business with.

As the meeting is taking place, inquire about the level of formality that is desired. If the person you are addressing would rather have a serious pitch or a more casual conversation, it is best to know how you should approach the meeting as a whole.

Ask questions and make it a conversation. When pitching a concept to someone, it is best to always ask questions in return so you seem engaged and inquisitive.

If they are asking something twice during the meeting, pay attention to what that is. When someone repeats a question or concern more than once, it is important to be attentive to what that remark entails.

After the meeting has taken place, within 24 hours, send a summary with one new piece of information. This shows that not only were you paying attention, but you have a new perspective to offer.

Most importantly, make sure there is a next step to follow.

It’s about being known for something

When speaking with a business, it is not enough to simply ‘love’ a product. Expressing interest towards a product or service is not going to get you as far as it would have in the past.

Instead of leaving it to your love for a product or business, share a vision on how to collaborate with the company and build an ecosystem.

This looks like selling a strategy behind what you can offer and being the vision that they need. This means not adding to something they already have, but rather offering a brand new perspective that will help elevate a business.

In a video from @iamkatweaver on Instagram, she breaks down some of the things you CAN say to investors during business. A lot of the time, women feel the need to overdeliver on certain expectations or tasks. However, it is okay to hold boundaries, especially in the professional realm.

The first piece of advice is to say I don’t know. Contrary to popular belief, it is okay not to know everything, and investors would rather you be honest about your knowledge than lie.

Secondly, when saying “I’ve made a mistake,” it is better to admit to your faults than have them show in your work.

This goes in hand and hand with the next statement, “we’ve had to pivot.” By doing so, you are able to show mistakes and the change that can come from them.

If you are working part-time in a business, it is okay to admit that you are not all in. It is actually encouraged to do side projects and grow the business with every avenue you can!

Lastly, a very powerful statement is, “Let me get back to you.” This shows that you can come back to them with facts rather than an immediate answer that you cannot fully promise.

When pitching to investors, here are some things to know.

Investors are not responding to the idea alone. They’re evaluating how clearly you understand what you’re building.

Brand clarity is the first thing they’re listening for. Can you articulate what your brand is, who it serves, and why it exists in a simple and direct way? If that answer shifts as you speak, it signals uncertainty.

Next is distribution. How does your brand actually reach people? Social, retail, partnerships, paid. Investors want to understand the engine behind awareness and whether it is repeatable. Not just what is working, but why it works.

Then come the numbers , especially L.T.V and C.A.C (LTV is lifetime value, how much revenue a customer brings in over time, and CAC is customer acquisition cost, what it costs to acquire that customer). This is not about memorizing metrics. It is about understanding whether the model makes sense.

And underneath all of it is how you respond under pressure. You will be asked questions you did not prepare for. The expectation is not perfection. It is fluency. The ability to think through your business in real time without losing clarity.

Strong founders do not memorize pitches. They understand their business well enough that nothing feels abstract when it is questioned.

But a brand deal is still a contract. Before you sign anything, here are a few terms to understand so you know how the deal affects you now and later.

Perpetuity
Means forever. If a brand secures rights in perpetuity, they can use your content indefinitely with no end date. That means your image, video, or likeness can live on their channels long after the original campaign is over. This is one of the most important terms to watch because it removes any time limit on usage.

Usage rights
This defines how your content can be used. It can be limited to your page only, or extended into ads, websites, paid media, and more. The broader the usage rights, the more control the brand has over your content.

Control & exclusivity
This determines what you can and cannot do during the contract period. Some deals restrict you from working with competing brands or limit what you can post in certain categories. It directly affects your ability to take on future opportunities.

Payment
This covers how you get paid and when. Flat fees, affiliate links, commissions, or hybrid models all structure income differently. Timing also matters. Net 30 or net 60 can impact your cash flow even if the deal looks good on paper.

Exclusivity
This means whether you’re allowed to work with competing brands. Sometimes it’s category-wide, sometimes it’s product-specific, and sometimes it’s time-bound. Exclusivity can limit future deals, so it matters more than it looks on paper.

Deliverables
What you are actually committing to. Number of posts, videos, stories, revisions. This defines the workload, not just the headline deal.

Long-term value
Not every deal is just about the upfront payment. Some matter for portfolio building, relationships, or future partnerships. You want to know what this opens up beyond the first deliverable.

The goal is not just to get brand deals. It is to understand them well enough that you never sign blind.
