A cyclist is arguing with a parking meter. Not a person near a parking meter. The meter itself. “You know what you did,” he snaps, jabbing a finger at the metal post.

Bane stands beside me with his arms crossed, black shirt clinging annoyingly well to his shoulders, his dark hair damp at the temples and his expression locked somewhere between murder and mild dehydration. “If this heat hex makes me emotionally available,” he says, “I’m suing someone.”

I glance up at him. “For damages?”

“For defamation.”

I bite back a smile because laughing at Bane when he’s sweaty and annoyed is dangerous, but also one of life’s finer pleasures. “You’d have to prove emotional availability occurred.”

It’s release week for Shadow Burn, and I’m so excited for you to finally meet Jasper and Katherine.

This book has so many things I love in romantic suspense: a brilliant heroine who trusts documents more than people, a former SEAL tech genius who insists he doesn’t do fieldwork anymore, a conspiracy buried in old CIA files. You get forced proximity, grumpy-meets-grumpy chemistry, and one very opinionated cat named Priss who steals every scene she enters. 🐈

This is the first story I wrote after my eye surgery, and it was a labor of love. I rewrote the first chapter THREE times. (Please tell me you love the first chapter.) My son, Sam, had to help me while my eye was doing all kinds of gymnastics after the first failed surgery, and the subsequent follow-up surgery that also had complications.

But that’s all done now. I’m back working on my own and my final post-op appointment will be September 1st. My vision in my left eye is mostly restored and I should only need readers for glasses. I’m SO relieved.

So, you’ll understand why Shadow Burn holds a special place in my heart. It’s more than just a story for me; it’s part of my timeline from this very challenging year with my failing vision. It’s a mile marker that quietly says I made it. I got through the surgeries and complications and managed to write (with help).

I wrote this story before my eye surgery, at a time when I didn’t know what was ahead or what might change for me on the other side of it. So much has happened between then and now, and holding this book in my hands on release day feels emotional in the best kind of way.

I never dreamed these two would steal my heart so thoroughly. Hubby asked if I enjoyed writing it, and I nearly cried all over again with a resounding, YES! Even Regan’s mom, Lucy, is a character I want to write more of. Mark your calendars: Shadow Strike releases May 19th.

I’m currently brainstorming the fourth book, Shadow Secrets (tentatively titled), right now. Look for that one, featuring a former Secret Service agent and a tattoo artist, to be released in July.

Rocky Mountain SEALs update: still no word from the traditional publisher other than the first book is “under editorial review,” which is good - it’s still got legs with them. It’s been five months since I submitted it for consideration… (yawn, stretch) … but that’s the trad world for you. I’m still working on the manuscript, a chapter here and a chapter there, so it will be ready for a fall release IF the publisher passes on it. Stay tuned. BIG plans for that series.

For my Grim fans, Grave Bound is coming in June. I’ll be editing it next week, and the cover is one of my favorites. I can’t wait to share it with you next month!
