Hosted by Mixed Messages founder Isabella Silvers (that’s me!) the panel will include:

Dean Atta, the BAFTA award-winning screenwriter and Stonewall Book Award-winning author, best known for his young adult novel in verse, The Black Flamingo, and the stop-motion animation, Two Black Boys in Paradise. His heartfelt storytelling draws on his Greek Cypriot and Jamaican heritage as well as his queer identity.

His debut adult novel, Big Man, will be on sale on the night.

Ela Lee is a London-based author. Her debut novel Jaded was published as a lead title by Vintage in the UK, and was an Amazon Best Fiction Book of the Year. That year, Ela was also named a Spotify Breakout Author, and was selected for Forbes 30 under 30, Class of 2025. Minbak, her second novel, was released in 2026.

Divya Maniar is a writer from Singapore. Her work has been published in Joyland magazine, The Rumpus, Nimrod International Journal and elsewhere. She studied Philosophy and Comparative Literature at Brown University and English Literature at the University of Cambridge.

After Care is her debut novel, and we’ll be selling early copies on the night.

This week’s guest is Imani Thompson, who is of mixed-Black Caribbean, Scottish and Irish heritage. Imani is the author of Honey, a thrilling debut about Ysra, a woman who doesn’t intend to kill. But when a turn of events sees an odious professor meet a nasty end due to Ysra’s actions, she relishes the feeling of finally having some control. Imani believes that violence is never the answer – I’m less convinced. But regardless of our stances on taking justice into our own hands, I was fascinated to hear the Sociology graduate discuss her mixed heritage for this week’s newsletter. Read Imani’s story below.

How do you define your identity?

I still refer to myself as mixed-race. As a kid, I was quite comfortable with that term. My dad is Black, my mum is white, that’s who I am. At the same time, I’d call myself British.

There were never any questions of my identity there for me, although my dad definitely questioned that growing up – he felt like he couldn’t be black and British. The first time he heard the concept was filling out a form to work in Marks & Spencer as a teenager.

Where did you grow up?

Mainly in the southwest of the country. Devon and Dorset, very white places. We didn’t feel ostracised, but we grew up in towns where if my brother and I saw a Black person, we’d tell each other about it.

I went to Jamaica for a massive family reunion, and I’ve never felt more English. The more I spent time with my extended cousin, the more I was confronted with how British I was.

You studied Sociology at Cambridge – I would assume that was also a very white environment?

I was expecting it to be, but it was actually so diverse. It’s so international. Going to the African Caribbean Society and spaces for women of colour, that was my first feeling of wondering whether I was allowed into these spaces. People were so welcoming, but I wondered whether this was a door I was allowed to go through.

It’s this constant questioning of everything in every place that you are, and then in the mix of that recognising your light skin privilege and not wanting to complain. My brother is darker than me, and I wonder whether I’d question things so much in terms of having identities put on me if I was his colour. It reminds you how arbitrary everything is. We have the same parents, we came out of the same womb, but our experience is completely different because society is still so obsessed with colour.

Since Honey has been published, I’ve had a bit of an identity crisis. When it came out in the US, I was suddenly on loads of Black reading lists. I was presented as a Black author. The one drop rule is still so evident there. On the flip side, I went to a dinner where a woman asked me where I was from. When I told her, she told me “I was wondering why you were writing about that. You’re very white for a Black girl.”

When people ask about my heritage, I know that they’re asking about my Black side. I tell them every side, like how on my mum’s side we’re Scottish and Irish, and that there’s also some Irish on my dad’s Caribbean side too.

A woman the other day just said “whatever you feel you are, that’s how you identify. It’s your choice.” I loved that. There’s no actual word that makes sense for the science or history of people who have mixed melanin.

Has that identity crisis settled in you now?

Definitely. It’s been quite confronting, because I’ve never identified myself as being Black. It’s a strange thing to have an identity put on you. This is the identity that I have, and I don’t have to fit into these neat categories.

In my next book, there’s a mixed-race character who’s adopted. She grew up in Dorset and is constantly searching for her identity. It’s a slippery place, but also wonderful. In a way you’re kind of a chameleon. You’re allowed into different rooms and spaces, and people probably say things to you that they wouldn’t otherwise. I can see the positives in that, especially with the work I do.

That’s interesting. People described Honey as a Trojan horse of a novel, where you used the murder genre to slip in race theory.

Yes, I was super strategic with it. I observed what was being published and what happened after Black Lives Matter. My mum taught me about representation from such a young age. I wanted to get those ideas to a wider audience.

The question was, ‘can I say everything I want to say, but in a way that will be commercially viable?’ I wanted to push the book beyond identity politics too. It doesn’t make profound points about race. Race doesn’t play out in why [my main character] does what she does. It’s something more universally human.

I read that you deliberately submitted your dissertation in a format that challenged conventions. Do you think that sense of playfulness and creativity comes from knowing that there’s not one single way to do things, which is something we as mixed people see from birth?

I’ve always tied it to my questioning. My brother and I were always questioning things. I feel if you grow up on a margin, you understand the society that you’re growing up in so much better. From such a young age, you have an innate understanding of how stories and power dynamics are put together.

There’s things that you notice because the world isn’t reflecting your image back at you, and that’s a great place to grow up in. There were challenges, but I do think it makes you more open. Seeing the clashing cultures in my family, I understood nuance. You can have these sweeping ways of looking at society, but you always have to look at what is personal. That makes me less het up about identity politics.

Is this a conversation you ever had with your parents?

My parents were amazing at bringing us up to think that it’s amazing to be mixed-race. She even had a book on the shelf about why mixed-race children are better, which is so problematic, looking back. My dad told us to never apologise for who we are or where we come from.

I always ask people how they want the conversation around mixed identity to develop. We’re taking charge now, so what would that look like for you?

We’re all mixed-race. It would be amazing if everyone did DNA tests. I do feel it would do a lot for racism. These colloquial ways that we refer to race don’t add up scientifically, and the borders that we put in place are ultimately arbitrary. As a species, humanity has become who we are because we’ve moved and migrated. We are who we are because all of our ancestors have moved around the world. That’s what makes human beings beautiful.

What’s the best thing about being mixed for you?

I’ve always felt that being mixed-race is a bit of a superpower. I’m happy that I grew up in an identity that made me question things from a young age. I’m so grateful for how it’s formed my mind.

How would you sum up your mixed identity in one word?

Chameleon.

This week’s guest is Lauren Kung Jessen, who is of mixed Chinese, Scottish, Danish and Welsh backgrounds, by way of Taiwan and America. Lauren is the author of several romance novels that draw on her mixed-Chinese heritage, where her characters navigate love, Chinese traditions, fate and family expectations. Her latest rom-com, The Fortune Flip, follows Hazel Yen, who hopes a fortune teller can reverse her bad luck. But when she meets lucky Logan Wells and his utterly chaotic cat, their fates change directions.

Lauren’s storytelling has connected her to her own heritage, so read her own story below.

How do you define your identity?

I’m mixed-race. My mom is Chinese, born and raised in Taiwan. My dad is white American, with Scottish, Danish and Welsh backgrounds.

My usual shorthand is to say I’m mixed-race Chinese-American. I’ve become more specific over the years as I try to better understand my identities and cultures.

Has the way that you’ve described your identity changed over time?

Growing up, I would call myself hapa. My mom moved from Taiwan to Hawaii, so that was just the language that I knew.

When people would ask ‘what’ I was or where I was from, I would say half-Chinese and wouldn’t explain the rest. I felt like that answered what people were really asking. Now, I’m more likely to say I’m Chinese-American by way of Taiwan.

The language we use to describe ourselves is so important. I’ve been reading books on being mixed-race, and one of the most influential things I read was that we get to decide what we call ourselves, despite what people tell us we should or shouldn’t say.

There was a time when I used to own it and say whatever I wanted about myself. Then I shut down and wondered if I was allowed to explain myself in that way. It was empowering to hear that you get to own how you describe yourself.

Your mom was born and raised in Taiwan, but your traditions are rooted in Chinese culture – how did that affect how you feel about your identity?

Learning about all of my different cultures cracked something open in me. I’m on this lifelong journey to keep learning. I went to Taiwan last year for the first time, and it felt different than anywhere else I’ve ever been. It was special to be eating those foods and be around family and people who look like me.

What was life like for you, growing up?

I grew up in Seattle, Washington. It’s pretty diverse. My dad’s whole family lived nearby, so I saw the white side of my family more. But, I went to Chinese school on the weekends and to a Chinese camp. We’d see my grandparents in Hawaii, my aunt would visit a lot and we’d go to Lunar New Year parties with Chinese family friends. I’d get my red envelopes, and we’d go to dim sum every weekend in Downtown Seattle.

I was around Chinese culture all the time, but learning the language is hard. It will forever be a goal for me to speak Chinese. I’ve tried before, it’s just hard to get it to stick. Language is a huge way to connect, but it’s very vulnerable. As soon as you open your mouth to say something, you’ve exposed yourself.

As I’ve grown up, it’s been this need to keep those traditions alive and bring them into my present. I do that through writing. It’s how I learn about the nuances of my cultures. The whole reason I started writing was to see myself in books – mixed representation is still so lacking.

Is all of this a way to prove your heritage, or a way of trying to connect?

I do feel more confident in being mixed. I feel like I know my Chinese side more because I have family there, whereas my dad was born in America so we have to learn our history through Ancestry.com. Whereas on my mom’s side, it’s so much closer in history and feels more accessible.

I knew about my Chinese zodiac, but now I know how the animals work together and more mythologies. I now know about joss paper burning at funerals. I never knew about the Lantern Festival until I wrote Red String Theory. There’s so much to explore. It’s constant, and it’s exciting.

It’s given me autonomy to own my own experience. One of the themes in Lunar Love is what traditions we take from the past and evolve to make our own in the present. We also have to decide what we want that to look like in the future – it’s on us now. Our grandparents might not be around for long, and our parents don’t necessarily teach us the language or culture. There’s a million reasons why things happen the way they do.

It sounds like writing has helped you feel a bit more rooted in your identity.

Yes and no. Both. I’ve had to do so much research, and that has given me a new appreciation for my culture. Learning about joss papers when researching a funeral in Lunar Love added to my belief system of what happens after we die. It’s proven to me that I don’t know everything, but I want to put these stories out there.

Sometimes I wonder if people care about mixed characters, but I know I do. When there’s a mixed character in a book or a memoir about a mixed experience, I devour them. Growing up, anytime I saw another mixed kid, we immediately bonded. It’s such a unique experience.

I’d love to hear about some of the mixed stories that you’ve engaged with!

There’s this amazing show called Blue Eye Samurai. The creator is mixed and the story is of a mixed samurai. There’s also a book called When Half Is Whole: Multiethnic Asian American Identities by Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu, which has a lot of stories. Lily Chu is a mixed Canadian author I love.

I also love seeing mixed actors in shows, even if they’re not talking about the mixed experience. I do want that experience touched on, though. If you don’t talk about it at all, then you kind of lose me.

What’s the conversation around mixed identity like in the U.S. right now?

I didn’t go, but there was the big Wasian meet-up in New York. It felt like a place where you could talk about your backgrounds in a way where people didn’t feel like they were trying to assess you. I know there was controversy about the term ‘Wasian,’ but it doesn’t really capture the different mixes.

When I was younger, I was asked so much more what I was. People would try to guess ‘what’ I was. I don’t get that as much now. Sometimes it’s not ill intended, it’s curiosity.

Have you noticed any stereotypes around mixed identity? How do you want the conversation to develop?

Being mixed doesn’t always mean being biracial Black and white. Also, just because we belong to several different cultures and backgrounds, doesn’t mean we know everything about them. But it also doesn’t mean we know nothing about them. It’s a spectrum of your own unique experience. I might not know the language, but another mixed Chinese, American, Welsh, Scottish, Danish person might.

As for how I would want the conversation to develop, I want more in the media. So much of the world is mixed, and I want people to be exposed to the realities of that.

What’s the best thing about being mixed for you?

I love that it feels like being in a category of its own. I’ve always loved being mixed. It’s hard to fit in fully to the different cultures you belong to, but you get to have a foot in each. That, to me, is a special place to be. It feels like we’re in our own little club with our shared, specific struggles and the way we can immediately bond over those.

You get this unique access to different countries, different food, different traditions and different perspectives. You get curious about so much of the world, and I love that. You get to pull on what resonates most with you and create your own experience.

How would you sum up your mixed experience in one word?

Fulfilling. I get to embrace, celebrate and claim so many different kinds of foods, traditions and culture. It feels very gratifying and makes my life feel full.

Last year, author Callie Kazumi spoke about how she felt like she was faking her identity, the layers of removal from her Japanese heritage and why her author name was an important choice.

Callie’s debut novel, Cuckoo, was a story of obsession, love and murder, as Claire’s fiancé Noah disappears from her life.

Callie’s second thriller, Greedy, is a sinister story about Ed, a husband, father and gambling addict about to lose everything, until he receives an offer from a reclusive billionaire. She’s looking for a private chef, but can he cater to her unusual tastes?

For both, Callie writes as Callie Kazumi, a reclamation of her Japanese heritage. Whereas once she was embarrassed of ‘Kazumi,’ her middle name, now she wants everyone to see this side of her.

I decided to reclaim my Japanese name after years of feeling ‘different,’ of being not-all-white but barely-Japanese.

I’m a second-generation immigrant – my mother is Nikkei Japanese, born and raised in Brazil to my Japanese grandparents. The paradox of a tiny little Japanese woman opening her mouth and unleashing the vocals of a loud, obscene, Brazilian woman is both astonishing and mildly frightening.

That’s the culture I grew up in, eating pão de queijo and feijoada, while grainy VHS tapes show me demanding (in Portuguese) that everyone watch me dance to my favourite song, Malas Prontas by Grupo Sensação (a rogue choice for a five-year-old.) The rule at dinner table was if you weren’t the loudest, you weren’t heard.

Minbak by Ela Lee

In her second novel, Ela Lee introduces us to three generations of women across two time periods. First, Incheon, South Korea, 1985, where the country is revolting against dictatorship. Hana is pulled from school to work in the local minbak (boarding house,) with dreams of leaving. In London, 2008, Hana must move her ailing mother and teenage daughter into a single room, making the past collide with the present. There are secrets, obsessions, and the unravelling of a family’s dark past.
