To ask about the unthought is to bore a hole in the ceiling you are standing under. People formed to identify wholly with the dominant culture do not live inside an ideology they can step outside of and criticize; they live inside an epistemic space that makes its own limits impossible to see, because the instruments of seeing are made by that space. The unthought is not what they reject—rejection comes only after thinking—but the questions for which the frame provides no place to be asked: the region the mind never reaches, because the frame it lives in rules out the possibility from the start. They do not see their culture; they see reality through its lens. And a frame that shows you things does not show itself, the way light reveals the nature of everything and resists being seen. So the world seems to them simply given, and whatever falls outside it takes on the character of the rationally impossible, well before anyone calls it false or forbidden. Take the aquarium: a fish in its tank is not ignorant of what lies beyond the glass. Ignorance presupposes something there to be ignorant of, and it never occurs to the fish that beyond the glass is a world unlike its own.

Names for the dark region

In The Unthought in Contemporary Islamic Thought, Mohammed Arkoun distinguished three levels inside what he called the logosphere—the linguistic and intellectual space that draws the limits of what can be thought before thinking begins. There is the thinkable, what the reigning system of knowledge can accommodate. There is the unthought, what centuries of exclusion have pushed out of mind altogether. And there is the unthinkable, what power forbids from entering discussion at all. The whole argument of this essay turns on the difference between the last two. People know the forbidden is there and keep quiet about it; a sin requires someone who knows where the line runs in order to cross it or avoid it. The unthought needs no censor and no preacher, because it never occurs to anyone. The censor—whether an authority, a preacher, or a censor within—hunts ideas that were born and were strangled in the cradle before they could take hold of the collective mind. Here the idea is never born at all, or was born once and effaced until it was as if it had never been.

Pierre Bourdieu gave this region the name that stuck: doxa, the world of what is neither discussed nor disputed, the sum of tacit assumptions, customs, and reflexes passed on by absorption and shared living, and inherited as culture. It is tradition after it has settled into people as second nature, having once been nothing more than convention. Orthodoxy and heterodoxy—the approved school and its dissenting rival—fight in a single arena, and doxa is the arena itself, the ground neither disputant thinks to question. The Islamic tradition had already anticipated the idea with its own conceptual tools, in the notion of compound ignorance: not to know, and not to know that you do not know. Asked whether anything was worse than ignorance, the Sufi Sahl al-Tustari answered: yes, ignorance of ignorance. The unthought is compound ignorance of another kind. It is not only the questions that are missing; what is missing is any sense that they are missing, so nothing feels lost—the instruments for feeling a loss are part of what was lost.

Foucault carried the idea into history. Every period, he argued, has its own order of knowledge—an episteme, an unconscious network setting the conditions under which knowing is possible at all. What falls outside it is not refused; it simply cannot be conceived. He went so far, in The Order of Things, as to say that all modern thought is governed by the obligation to think its own unthought: to think what stays outside its frame while it is thinking. Thomas Kuhn made the same point in the language of science. A paradigm does not merely determine which answers are acceptable; it determines which questions are permitted to be born.

The body, storehouse of doxa

Nobody can forbid doxa, because it never reaches the mind to be forbidden. It works its way into bodies before it is ever in thoughts. People identified with their culture do not ask why we work, because work for them is an existential identity and not an act in need of justification; they do not ask why marriage, because marriage is natural maturity and not a social contract; they do not ask why time runs in a line, because linear time is a bodily experience one cannot step outside of. Bourdieu’s habitus is not a structure added to a body. It is history turned into body, a single structure realized in a muscle, a posture, a rhythm of breathing. Waking, working, eating, sleeping: rhythms that never cross into awareness. The body is not a machine. It is the register of doxa and its storehouse. The body is complicit with the frame without its owner’s knowledge, aborting the idea before it can be born, by way of a habit repeated until it became second nature. Which is why doxa cannot be removed by a well-made argument, any more than a habit can be removed by a lecture.

Language, and doubt as a skill

It is often said that the limits of language are the limits of the world, and that a culture without a concept of the individual apart from the clan cannot ask: who am I apart from my people? The claim is overstated. Arabic, like every language, has grammar enough to frame any question at all. What is missing is not in the rules of the language but in a life in which the question would mean something. Wittgenstein caught the problem from a sharper angle in On Certainty: doubt is itself a habitus, and this one was never acquired. Traditional people have all the grammar they need to form the sentence and still cannot ask the existential question that touches their certainties, because doubt is a skill they were never trained in. Whoever tried to doubt everything, he wrote, would never reach the point of doubting anything; the game of doubt already rests on certainty.

What follows is not about every believer, nor about Islamic thought across its history, but about one type in particular: the Muslim so identified with a frame that it has become part of the fabric and can no longer be seen. The unthought here has features of its own, and one criterion holds them together—none of them can be grasped without the concept of a frame, and that is precisely the concept that is missing.

The historicity of the Qur’anic codex as an event: Traditional Muslims think a great deal about the Qur’an: its inimitability, its rulings, its variant readings. What cannot be put into the form of a question is this: how did an oral address bound to particular occasions become a closed written corpus, and what happened in the passage? Because the frame completely equates the codex in their hands with eternal speech, the work of production—the gathering, the ordering, the sealing of the text—never surfaces as a subject. The text did not become a text; it always was one. The question hangs in the air, because what it asks about does not exist in their world.

Orthodoxy as a historical victory rather than a truth: They think about the sects through the category of the saved group, seeing one party that kept the truth and others that strayed. The questions that find no way in are these: how did one reading become the standard of correct Islam? Who won, by what means, and what did we lose along with the defeated? The frame fuses historical dominance with doctrinal correctness so completely that the question of how orthodoxy was constructed is stillborn, and the conclusion is settled before the inquiry starts.

Their own faith as an accident of birth: Born in Lisbon in 1200, they would have been Catholic—so what is their present certainty worth, as knowledge? For this question in particular the frame has a mechanism that arrives before the question can form: fitra, the disposition every child is born with. Every child is born in this natural state; Islam is a universal origin, and deviation is something the parents introduce. Here the frame does not forbid the question. It dissolves it before it takes shape, offering a ready answer before the passing thought can become a question, so the thought goes by unnoticed and no one lives it as a problem of knowledge.

The religions as a single genus: Comparison exists in the tradition, in the heresiographies and the polemics, but it is the comparison of a standard with those who have deviated from it. Islam, for the traditional believer, is not one of the religions but their measure—which is why it never occurs to anyone to study the founding texts, the Qur’an and the Torah and the Gospels, with the same instruments and at the same interpretive distance, where revelation becomes one phenomenon among others. The frame here has no position from which a scholar could stand outside all of them.

The Arabic of the Qur’an as human language: Studying it with the tools of discourse analysis, as one would study any other text, is blocked by the doctrine of inimitability before it can start. The text is above language by definition, and linguistic analysis is not so much prohibited as inconceivable—like measuring the ruler with the ruler.

The imagined past as a construction: The ideal city of the Prophet, the righteous forebears, the golden age: the frame lives these as a faithful memory of a past it takes to be preserved as it was, not as images built retroactively to do work in the conflicts of the present. The question of who built the image, and why, finds no place in the frame, because the image presents itself as transmitted rather than made.

The traditional person: a general map

Outside the religious field, the map widens to what everyone identified with their culture has in common.

That culture is an accident and not an essence: The idea that the “natural” is conventional calls for the concept of culture as an object of thought, and that concept is not available. So the world gets sorted by nature, custom, and correctness, and there is no slot in the sorting for culture.

That the self is a project: People are born already defined: son of so-and-so, of this tribe, of that religion, charged with being a worthy heir rather than the maker of a self. The idea that a person makes himself presupposes a distance between the self and itself that the frame does not allow.

That doubt is an instrument: Certainty is the default; doubt is a whispering and a sickness to be warded off, not a means of knowing. The idea that doubt is a road to certainty gets no hearing.

That something moves in people from the inside: The self is transparent to itself, and declared intentions exhaust the explanation of behavior. There is no room for an agent working inside a person without their knowledge. In fairness, this item comes out of our tank and not theirs: we are the ones who possess the concept of the unconscious, and we apply it to them while we do the describing.

That death is complete extinction: In a system built on immortality, an end with nothing after it cannot be conceived, and refusal comes after that failure rather than before it.

History offers parallel cases. A man living in a slave society to whom it never occurs that freeing slaves is a possible idea—the frame closes off the conception before the matter can reach his conscience. A man before the discovery of germs who does not ask why we wash our hands, because the germ does not exist in his conceptual world. Popular sovereignty, before the modern revolutions, a fantasy that never rose to the level of a question. Political equality between men and women, in many societies, lay outside what anyone could conceive, since there was no frame in which it could be raised as a serious question.

Cracks in the picture

Yet “the traditional Muslim” in the singular is an abstraction that has itself gone largely unthought in the writing of the tradition’s critics. The classical field was wider than this sketch suggests. The Mu’tazila thought about the createdness of the Qur’an, which is one form of its historicity. The legal theorists distinguished the certain from the probable, conceding that most understanding is human work. Ibn Rushd thought about the plurality of routes to truth. Arkoun himself insisted that the unthought is a historical variable and not a fixed essence: its territory has narrowed and widened, and what we now call traditional is the heir of a late moment of closure, not of the whole field. A map like this one describes the structure of a particular frame in a particular phase. Turning it into a description of the essence of “the Islamic mind” across the centuries is exactly the essentialism the concept of the unthought was built to dismantle. The traditional believer described here is an ideal type in Max Weber’s sense, not an ethnographic report; every traditional society has its fissures—irony, margins, rituals of reversal—and the ideal type brings out what total identification tends toward, where it occurs to nobody that what they believe is an opinion, or that there are other worlds in which they might have turned out otherwise.

How a frame is discovered

Doxa, for Bourdieu, is not shaken by reflection. It is shaken by crisis. When the correspondence breaks between the structures of the world around a person and the structures that have become their body, what was never discussed is driven into discussion. A fish does not discover the water in its tank by thinking; it discovers it when it is pulled out. Emigration that overturns a life, a catastrophe after which nothing is as it was, a life among people unlike you in every way, the collapse of the authority you once appealed to: these are the moments in which a frame is discovered, not the hours set aside for thought. Perhaps this is why Hegel said that the owl of Minerva flies only at dusk. Awareness of the frame arrives in the moment it fails, not at the height of its coherence. And the critic’s own instruments were mostly made when his own life cracked; he too is like a fish that was pulled from its tank once.

There is a second way out, and this one people make for themselves. Popular Sufism, with its orders and lodges and litanies, was part of the doxa of traditional society rather than a departure from it, and the lodge was the traditional man’s institution. It was elite, gnostic Sufism—the Sufism of Ibn Arabi and al-Niffari—that stood at the edge of the system or outside it. For them the knower is the one who knows that what he does not know is wider than what he knows, which is the opposite of compound ignorance. Seclusion, hunger, sleeplessness, and recitation are techniques against the habitus: a counter-rhythm cutting across the organic rhythm in which doxa is stored—sleep, food, company, custom. If crisis is being pulled out of the tank by force, the Sufi path is emptying the tank of its water voluntarily, drop by drop. Neither teaches you anything you did not already know; each breaks the rhythm that kept doxa in your body.

What is our water?

There is an irony here that turns on the person holding it. The question we put to them—what is it that never occurs to you?—is itself among the things that never occur to them, since it cannot be asked without the concept of a frame, and that is precisely what they do not have. Then it turns again: what is our water, ours, the ones drawing these maps? We are the ones who cannot conceive of a self as simply given. Fitra is for them an origin beyond question, and “make yourself” is that for us, and the obligation to choose is the arena we do not see. A fish pulled from its tank is now swimming in another tank, and the only difference is that it knows water exists. We have no name for our own water until we are pulled out of it. And there is a deeper water no one is pulled out of: our perceptual apparatus itself, which evolved for survival rather than for seeing reality as it is—as Donald Hoffman argues.

Doxa as shelter

Doxa is a shelter before it is a prison. The traditional world is coherent, solid, saturated with meaning, and the person inside it lives in a cosmos already interpreted. Whoever’s world collapses pays for it: they lose their bearings, and find no new community to belong to. Those who remain identified with their frame are usually happier than the fish that was pulled out, and steadier, untouched by the anxiety of the large existential questions. The unthought shelters people to the same degree that it confines them. It is this aspect that makes the matter tragic and not merely a question of ethics: what is being described here is a house sealed tight, not a deficient mind, and its sealing is the very thing that holds it together.

The first wetness

The first step in thinking is not an answer to a question. It is a sudden sense of being wet: discovering, for the first time, that you are swimming in water. David Bohm called this capacity proprioception of thought—thought registering its own movement as it happens, the way the body feels the movement of its limbs. But the discovery, if it ever happens, is a gift and an orphaning at once. You see for the first time, and you find yourself alone, with no authority left to interpret the world for you. Coming out of the water is sight, but it is also the loss of shelter. And whoever has felt wet once knows that the last question is this:

which water am I swimming in now, writing this?

السؤال عن اللامفكَّر فيه سؤالٌ يثقب السقف الذي يقف السائل تحته. فالإنسان المجبول على التماهي مع الثقافة السائدة لا يعيش داخل إيديولوجيا يستطيع أن يراها من خارجها فينقدها، بل داخل فضاء معرفيّ يجعل رؤية حدوده ممتنعة؛ فأدوات الرؤية نفسها من صُنع ذلك الفضاء. واللامفكَّر فيه عنده ليس الأسئلة التي يرفضها، فالرفض لا يكون إلا بعد تفكير، بل الأسئلة التي لا تجد في إطاره موضعًا تُطرح فيه؛ تلك المساحة التي لا يبلغها العقل لأن الإطار الذي يعيش داخله ينفي إمكانها من الأصل. هو لا يرى ثقافته، بل يرى الوجود من خلال عدسة ثقافته. والإطار الذي يُظهر له الأشياء لا يُظهر نفسه، كالضوء الذي تُرى من خلاله طبيعة الأشياء وهو ذاته يستعصي على الرؤية؛ فيبدو له العالم كما لو أنه معطًى، ويكتسب كل ما يقع خارجه صفة الممتنع عقلًا، قبل أن يُوصف بالبطلان أو المنع. ولو استخدمنا استعارة حوض الأسماك، فالسمكة في حوضها لا تجهل ما وراء الزجاج؛ فالجهل يفترض شيئًا حاضرًا يُجهل، ولا يخطر لها أن وراءه عالمًا مغايرًا لعالمها.

أسماء المساحة المظلمة

ميّز محمد أركون في «اللامفكَّر فيه في الفكر الإسلامي المعاصر» ثلاثة مستويات داخل ما يسميه اللوغوسفير (logosphere)، أي الفضاء اللغوي–العقلي الذي يرسم حدود ما يمكن التفكير فيه قبل أن يبدأ التفكير: المفكَّر فيه (the thinkable)، وهو ما يسعه النظام المعرفي السائد؛ واللامفكَّر فيه (the unthought)، وهو ما تراكم إقصاؤه عبر القرون حتى سقط من الأذهان نهائيًّا؛ والمستحيل التفكير فيه (the unthinkable)، وهو ما تمنعه السلطة من دخول مجال النقاش. وفي التمييز بين الأخيرين تقوم أطروحة هذا المقال: الممنوع يعرف الناس أنه موجود ولكنهم يصمتون عنه، فالخطيئة تحتاج مَن يعرف حدودها كي تُرتكب أو تُتجنَّب؛ أما اللامفكَّر فيه فلا يحتاج رقيبًا ولا واعظًا، لأنه لا يخطر على بال. والرقيب — سلطةً كان أم واعظًا أم رقيبًا ذاتيًّا — يصطاد أفكارًا وُلدت فخُنقت في مهدها قبل أن تتمكّن من العقل الجمعي. وهنا الفكرة لا تُولد أصلًا، أو أنها وُلدت يومًا فطُمست حتى صارت كأنها لم تُولد.

وأطلق بيير بورديو على هذه المساحة التي يقع فيها ما لا يخطر على بال اسمًا مستقرًا: الدوكسا (doxa)، عالم ما لا يُناقَش ولا يُنازع فيه، مجموع الافتراضات الضمنية والأعراف وردود الأفعال التي تنتقل بالتلقّي والمعايشة وتُتوارث ثقافيًّا، إنه التراث حين يترسّب في الإنسان طبيعةً ثانية بعد أن كان مجرّدَ اصطلاح. الأرثوذكسية والهتيروذكسية، المذهب المعتمد وخصمه المنشقّ، يتصارعان في حلبةٍ واحدة، والدوكسا هي الحلبة نفسها، وهي الأرضية التي لا يشكّ فيها المتخاصمان. وقد سبق التراث الإسلامي إلى الفكرة بأدواته في مفهوم الجهل المركب، وهو ألّا تعلم وألّا تعلم أنك لا تعلم. وحين سُئل المتصوف سهل التستري: أثمّة ما هو أشدّ من الجهل؟ قال: نعم، الجهل بالجهل. واللامفكَّر فيه جهل مركب من ضرب آخر، إذ لا تغيب عنه الأسئلة وحدها، بل يغيب عنه أنها غائبة، فلا يشعر بفقدان شيء، لأن أدوات الإحساس بالفقدان جزء مما فُقد.

وينقل فوكو الفكرة إلى التاريخ، فيرى أنّ لكل حقبة نظامًا معرفيًّا خاصًّا بها، «إيبستيم» (episteme)، شبكة لا واعية تحدد شروط إمكان المعرفة فيها، فما وقع خارجها لا يُرفض لأنه أصلًا يستحيل تصوره؛ حتى ذهب في «الكلمات والأشياء» إلى أن الفكر الحديث كله محكومٌ بأن يفكّر في لامفكَّره، أي في ما يظلّ خارج إطاره وهو يُفكّر. ويذكر توماس كون في سياق الفكرة ذاتها أن النموذج الإرشادي (paradigm) لا يحدد الإجابات المقبولة فحسب، بل يحدد الأسئلة التي يُسمح لها أن تولد.

الجسد خزانة الدوكسا

لا يمكن لأحدٍ أن يمنع الدوكسا، لأنها لا تصل إلى الذهن حتى تُمنع؛ بل تتغلغل في الأبدان قبل أن تكون في الأفكار. والإنسان المتماهي مع ثقافته لا يسأل لماذا نعمل، لأن العمل عنده هوية وجودية لا فعلًا يحتاج إلى تبرير؛ ولا يسأل لماذا الزواج، لأن الزواج نضج طبيعي للإنسان وليس عقدًا اجتماعيًّا؛ ولا يسأل لماذا الزمن خطّي، لأن خطية الزمن تجربة جسدية لا يمكن الوقوف خارجها. والهابيتوس (habitus) عند بورديو ليس بنية تُضاف إلى جسد، بل هو «التاريخ وقد صار جسدًا»، بنية واحدة تتجسد في عضلة ووقفة وإيقاع تنفس. الاستيقاظ والعمل والأكل والنوم إيقاعات لا تعبر الوعي. الجسد ليس آلة، إنه سجلّ الدوكسا وخزانتها. الجسد متواطئ مع الإطار من حيث لا يدري صاحبه، يُجهض الفكرة قبل أن تُولد، من خلال عادة تكرّرت حتى صارت طبيعة ثانية. ولهذا لا يمكن إزالة الدوكسا بالحجة الفكرية المتماسكة، كما لا يمكن إزالة العادة بمجرد محاضرة.

اللغة والشك المكتسب

يُقال كثيرًا إن حدود اللغة حدود العالم، وإن ثقافة لا تملك مفهوم «الفردية» مستقلًا عن العشيرة لا تستطيع أن تسأل: من أنا بمعزل عن أهلي؟ وفي هذا التفسير مبالغة. العربية، كسائر اللغات، يتسع نحوها لصياغة أي سؤال؛ فالنقص ليس في قواعد اللغة، بل في حياةٍ يكون فيها للسؤال معنًى. ويلتقط فيتغنشتاين في كتابه «في اليقين» المسألة من زاوية أدقّ: الشك نفسه هابيتوس لم يُكتسب. فالإنسان التقليدي يملك الجملة نحويًّا لكنّه يعجز عن السؤال الوجودي الذي يمسّ مسلماته، لأن الشك مهارة لم يتمرّس عليها:

«لو حاولت أن تشك في كل شيء لما بلغت حدّ الشك في شيء؛ لعبة الشك ذاتها تفترض يقينًا»

خريطة التديّن المتماهي مع إطاره

وليس المقصود هنا كلَّ متديّن، ولا العقلَ الإسلاميَّ عبر تاريخه، بل نمطًا بعينه: المسلم الذي تماهى مع إطاره حتى صار جزءًا من نسيجه فامتنعت عليه رؤيته. ولمساحة اللامفكَّر فيه عنده ملامح أخصّ مما سبق، يجمعها معيار واحد: أنها لا تُدرك إلا بمفهوم «الإطار»، وهو مفهوم غائب عنه.

تاريخية المصحف بوصفه حدثًا: المسلم التقليدي يفكّر كثيرًا في القرآن: إعجازه، أحكامه، قراءاته. أما الفكرة التي لا يستطيع صياغتها على شكل سؤال فهي: كيف تحوّل خطاب شفويّ ظرفيّ إلى مدوّنة مكتوبة مغلقة، وماذا وقع في هذا التحوّل؟ لأن الإطار يطابق بين المصحف الذي بين يديه والكلام الأزلي مطابقة تامة، فعملية الإنتاج، الجمع والترتيب وإغلاق النص، لا تظهر بوصفها موضوعًا. النص لم «يصر» نصًا، كان كذلك دائمًا. يبقى السؤال معلّقًا، لأن ما يسأل عنه غير موجود في عالمه.

الأرثوذكسية بوصفها انتصارًا تاريخيًّا لا حقيقة: يفكر التقليدي في الفِرَق عبر مقولة الفرقة الناجية، فيرى فرقةً حفظت الحقّ وفرقًا انحرفت عنه. أما الأسئلة التي لا يجد إليها سبيلًا فمنها: كيف غدت قراءةٌ بعينها معيارَ الإسلام الصحيح؟ من انتصر، وبأي وسائل، وماذا خسرنا مع المهزومين؟ الإطار يدمج بين الغلبة التاريخية والصواب العقدي دمجًا كاملًا، فسؤال صناعة الأرثوذكسية يولد ميتًا، والنتيجة معطاة قبل الشروع في البحث.

إيمانه هو بوصفه نتاج ولادة: لو وُلد في لشبونة عام ١٢٠٠ لكان كاثوليكيًّا، فما قيمة يقينه الحالي معرفيًّا؟ ولهذا السؤال بالذات آليةٌ في الإطار تسبق تشكّله سؤالًا، وهي الفطرة. كل مولود يولد على الفطرة، فالإسلام أصل كوني والانحراف طارئ يفعله الأبوان. الإطار هنا لا يمنع السؤال، بل يذيبه قبل أن يتشكّل، إذ يقدم إجابة جاهزة قبل أن يتحوّل الخاطر إلى سؤال، فلا يعيشه أحد بوصفه مشكلة معرفية.

الأديان بوصفها جنسًا واحدًا: في التراث مقارنة، في كتب الملل والنحل والردود، لكنها مقارنة المعيار بالمنحرفين عنه. والإسلام عند التقليدي ليس واحدًا من الأديان بل مقياسها، ولذلك لا يخطر أصلًا أن تُدرس النصوص المؤسِّسة، القرآن والتوراة والأناجيل، بالأدوات نفسها وعلى المسافة التأويلية نفسها، حيث يصير الوحي ظاهرة بين ظواهر. الإطار هنا لا يملك موقعًا يقف فيه الباحث خارج الجميع.

عربية القرآن بوصفها لغة بشرية: أن تُدرَس بأدوات تحليل الخطاب كأيّ نصّ آخر، يعترضه الإعجاز قبل أن يبدأ، فالنص عند التقليدي فوق اللغة بحكم تعريفه، والتحليل الألسني لا يقع تحت التحريم لأنه لا يقع تحت التصوّر؛ كمن يقيس المسطرة بالمسطرة.

المتخيَّل بوصفه صناعة: المدينة النبوية المثالية، السلف الصالح، العصر الذهبي؛ يعيشها الإطار بوصفها ذاكرة أمينة لماضٍ يظنّه محفوظًا كما كان، لا بوصفها صورًا شُيّدت بأثر رجعيّ لتؤدي وظائف في الصراعات المعاصرة. وسؤال «من بنى هذه الصورة ولماذا؟» لا يجد موضعًا في إطاره، لأن الصورة تقدّم نفسها منقولةً عن الماضي لا مبنيّةً في الحاضر.

خريطة الإنسان التقليدي عامة

خارج الفضاء الديني تتسع الخريطة إلى ما يشترك فيه المتماهون مع ثقافاتهم جميعًا.

أن تكون الثقافة عرَضًا لا جوهرًا: فكرة أن «الطبيعي» اصطلاحي تحتاج مفهوم «الثقافة» موضوعًا للنظر، وهو مفهوم لا يملكه المتماهي، فهو يصنّف العالم بالفطرة والعرف والصواب، ولا مكان في تصنيفه لـ«ثقافة».

أن تكون الذات مشروعًا: يولد المرء وتعريفه جاهز: ابن فلان، من قبيلة كذا، على دين كذا، ومهمته أن يكون وريثًا صالحًا لا صانعًا لذاته. فكرة أن الإنسان يصنع نفسه تفترض ضمنًا مسافةً بين الذات وذاتها لا يتيحها إطاره.

أن يكون الشك أداةً: اليقين عنده هو الأصل، والشك وسوسة ومرض يُستعاذ منه، لا آلة معرفية. وفكرة أن الشك طريق إلى اليقين لا يعترف بها.

أن يكون في المرء ما يحرّكه من داخله: نفسه عنده مكشوفة له، ونواياه المعلنة تستنفد تفسير الفعل. ولا مكان لفاعلٍ يعمل فيه من حيث لا يدري. وإنصافًا، هذا البند من حوضنا نحن لا من حوضه: نحن الذين نملك مفهوم «اللاوعي» فنحيله عليه ونحن نصفه.

أن يكون الموت فناءً تامًّا: في منظومة تقوم على الخلود، لا يستطيع المتماهي أن يتصوّر نهايةً لا يعقبها شيء؛ والرفض لاحقٌ لهذا العجز لا سابقٌ عليه.

والتاريخ يقدم شواهد موازية، منها إنسان يعيش في مجتمع عبودي ولا يخطر بباله أن تحرير العبيد فكرة ممكنة؛ فالإطار يسدّ عليه التصوّر قبل أن يبلغ الأمرُ ضميرَه. وإنسان ما قبل اكتشاف الجراثيم لا يسأل لماذا نغسل أيدينا، لأن الجرثومة غير موجودة في عالمه المفاهيمي. وكانت سيادة الشعب، قبل الثورات الحديثة، خيالًا لا ينهض إلى مرتبة السؤال. وفكرة المساواة السياسية بين الرجل والمرأة كانت في مجتمعات كثيرة خارج ما يخطر على بال، إذ لم يكن هناك إطار يطرحها بوصفها سؤالًا جادًّا.

شقوق في الصورة

غير أن «المسلم التقليدي» بصيغة المفرد تجريد يكاد يكون هو نفسه لامفكَّرًا فيه في خطاب نقاد التراث. الحقل الفكري الكلاسيكي كان أوسع مما يوحي به هذا الرسم، فقد فكّر المعتزلة في خلق القرآن، أي في شكل من تاريخيته؛ والأصوليون ميّزوا القطعي من الظني، أي أقرّوا ببشرية أكثر الفهم؛ وابن رشد فكّر في تعدد مسالك الحقيقة. وأركون نفسه يشدد على أن اللامفكَّر فيه متغيّر تاريخي لا ماهية ثابتة. مساحته ضاقت واتسعت، وما نسميه اليوم «تقليديًّا» وريث لحظة الانغلاق المتأخرة، لا وريث الحقل بكامله. خريطة كهذه تصف بنية إطار محدد في طور محدد. وتحويلها إلى وصف لجوهر «العقل الإسلامي» عبر العصور هو الجوهرانية بعينها التي بُني مفهوم اللامفكَّر فيه لتفكيكها. والإنسان التقليدي الذي نصفه هنا نمط مثالي (Idealtypus) بالمعنى الذي وضعه ماكس فيبر، لا وصف إثنوغرافي محض؛ ففي كل مجتمع تقليدي شقوق، سخرية وهامش وطقوس انقلاب، والنمط المثالي يجلو ما يؤول إليه التماهي التام، حيث لا يخطر ببال أحد أن ما يعتقده إنما هو رأيٌ، وأن ثمّة عوالم أخرى كان يمكن أن يكون فيها غير ما هو عليه في إطاره.

كيف يُكتشف الإطار

الدوكسا عند بورديو لا تتزعزع بالتأمل؛ تتزعزع بالأزمة. حين ينقطع التطابق بين بنى العالم من حول الإنسان والبنى التي صارت جسدًا فيه، يُساق ما لم يكن يُناقَش إلى ساحة النقاش. السمكة لا تكتشف ماء حوضها بالتفكير؛ تكتشفه حين تُسحب منه. هجرةٌ تقلب حياة صاحبها، كارثةٌ لا يبقى بعدها شيء على حاله، حياةٌ بين قومٍ لا يشبهونه في شيء، انهيارُ من كان يحتكم إليه: هذه لحظات اكتشاف الإطار، لا جلسات التفكير. وربما لهذا قال هيغل إن بومة مينرفا لا ترفرف بجناحيها إلا عند الغسق؛ فالوعي بالإطار يأتي في لحظة انهياره، لا في عزّ تماسكه. وأدوات الناقد نفسه صُنعت في الغالب حين تصدّعت حياته؛ فهو كالسمكة سُحبت من حوضها مرة.

وللخروج باب ثانٍ يصنعه صاحبه بيده. التصوف الشعبي، بطرقه وزواياه وأوراده، كان جزءًا من دوكسا المجتمع التقليدي، لا خروجًا عليها، وكانت الزاوية مؤسسة الإنسان التقليدي. أما التصوف العرفاني النخبوي، تصوف ابن عربي والنفّري، فهو الذي وقف على حافة المنظومة أو خارجها. والعارف عند أولئك من عرف أن ما لا يعرفه أوسع مما يعرفه، وهذا نقيض الجهل المركب. الخلوة والجوع والسهر والذكر تقنيات ضد الهابيتوس؛ إيقاع مضادّ يقطع الإيقاع العضوي الذي يخزن الدوكسا، أي النوم والطعام والجماعة والعادة. إن كانت الأزمة سحبًا قسريًّا من الحوض فالطريق الصوفي تفريغٌ طوعيّ للحوض من مائه، قطرة قطرة. وكلاهما لا يُعلّم صاحبه شيئًا لم يكن يعرفه؛ إنما يقطع عليه الإيقاع الذي حفظ الدوكسا في بدنه.

ما ماؤنا نحن؟

ثمة مفارقة تنقلب على صاحبها. فهذا السؤال الذي نطرحه عليه — ما الذي لا يخطر بالك؟ — هو نفسه ممّا لا يخطر على باله؛ إذ لا يُطرح إلا بمفهوم الإطار، وهذا عين ما لا يملكه. ثم تنقلب مرة أخرى: ما ماؤنا نحن، نحن الذين نرسم هذه الخرائط؟ نحن الذين لا نستطيع أن نتصوّر ذاتًا معطاةً جاهزة؛ فالفطرة عنده أصلٌ لا يُسأل عنه، و«اصنع نفسك» عندنا كذلك، وفريضة الاختيار حلبتنا التي لا نراها. السمكة التي سُحبت من حوضها تسبح الآن في حوضٍ آخر، والفرق الوحيد أنها تعرف أن الماء موجود. وماؤنا لا نعرف له إسماً إلا بعد أن نُسحب منه. وثمة ماء أعمق لا يُسحب منه أحد: جهازنا الإدراكي نفسه، وقد تطوّر للبقاء لا لرؤية الوجود على حقيقته، كما يذهب دونالد هوفمان.

الدوكسا سكن

الدوكسا سكن قبل أن تكون سجنًا. عالم الإنسان التقليدي متماسك صلب مشبع بالمعنى، يعيش صاحبه في كون مفسَّر سلفًا. ومن ينهار عالمه يدفع ثمنًا: يفقد بوصلته، ولا يجد جماعةً جديدة ينتمي إليها. والمتماهي غالبًا أسعد من السمكة المسحوبة وأكثر استقرارًا، فلا يخالجه قلق الأسئلة الوجودية الكبرى. اللامفكَّر فيه يحمي صاحبه بقدر ما يحبسه. وهذا الوجه هو ما يجعل المسألة مأساوية لا أخلاقية فحسب: ما نصفه هنا بيت مغلق بإحكام لا قصور في العقل؛ إغلاقُه هو عينُ تماسكه.

البلل الأول

أول خطوات التفكير ليست إجابة عن سؤال، بل شعور مفاجئ بالبلل: أن تكتشف، لأول مرة، أنك تسبح في ماء. سمّى ديفيد بوهم هذه القدرة شعورَ الفكر بحركته (proprioception of thought)، وهو أن يرصد الفكر حركتَه وهي تقع، كما يحسّ الجسد بحركة أعضائه. غير أن هذا الاكتشاف، إن صادف وحدث، نعمةٌ ويُتم معًا؛ فأنت ترى لأول مرة، وتجد نفسك وحيدًا دون سلطة تفسر لك العالم. الخروج من الماء رؤية، لكنه فقدان للسكن. ومن شعر بالبلل مرة عرف أن السؤال الأخير هو: أيّ ماءٍ أسبح فيه الآن، وأنا أكتب هذا؟

An accusation trailed Umm Kulthum for decades: that her monthly concert drove up the price of hashish on the night it was broadcast, through the fifties and sixties, and that this was proof of the stupor the Arabs had sunk into, and of the political defeat that came with it.

The poet Abdel Moneim Ramadan recalls:

“I remember that the monthly listening parties held in the houses of my neighbourhood — al-Waili, in northern Cairo — to listen to her, were hashish sessions, and Cairo’s sky would fill with its smoke. I don’t blame the hashish and I don’t blame Umm Kulthum. I only record what happened to me.”

Ihsan Abdel Quddous wrote about those nights in Lest the Smoke Fly, calling it the night when hashish flourishes and its price climbs to its peak.

Naguib Mahfouz, in Miramar and Adrift on the Nile, made her night a mirror held up to the contradictions of the Egyptian temperament: Egyptians of every persuasion gathered around the radio, listening to Thouma and passing the goza — the water pipe — until the two together became a collective anaesthetic and a brief escape from the pressure of reality.

Nor did the charge stay within the bounds of literary description. After the defeat of 1967, Umm Kulthum gave concerts in Arab and Western capitals and devoted the proceeds to the war effort, and the Islamist poet Yusuf al-Azm answered her with a poem titled Drug Them, Star of the East, in which songs of love and longing, sung while the blood was not yet dry, are one more sedative administered to a beaten nation.

The American Twin: Jazz and Marijuana

The pairing of singers with narcotics was not confined to Egypt. Two decades before Thouma and her goza, jazz stood accused of marijuana in the America of the twenties and thirties. Hashish cafés — “tea pads” — appeared in New York, serving the function of the Egyptian ghurza, the hashish den; there are said to have been five hundred of them by the thirties, a joint went for about twenty cents, and the players who smoked in them were known as vipers. The most famous of them, Louis Armstrong, smoked before shows and recording sessions until he was arrested in November 1930 and spent nine days in jail.

The musicians documented the pairing themselves, in what came to be called the reefer songs: Armstrong’s “Muggles” (1928), Cab Calloway’s “Reefer Man” (1932), Sidney Bechet’s “Viper Mad” (1938), Bessie Smith’s “Gimme a Pigfoot.” Then came the man who would press the charge officially. Harry Anslinger, first commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, made war on jazz as the music of the drug, and kept a file called “Marijuana and Musicians” that took in the players wholesale, Ellington and Armstrong among them, until the Treasury told him he was wasting his time. He turned the whole of his effort on Billie Holiday, and crowned the campaign with the 1937 act that made hashish federally criminal in practice. In America the state carried the accusation through its official apparatus, while in Egypt the intellectuals carried it in their novels and their memoirs.

Nietzsche against Wagner: An Accusation Without Smoke

A generation before the ghurza and the tea pads, the accusation had been established without any drug at all. In The Case of Wagner (1888), Nietzsche brought the same charge against Germany’s beloved national artist: “Is Wagner a man at all? Is he not rather a disease?… He has made music sick.” Then he took up the narcotic itself as a weapon, writing that Wagner had given desperate souls the hashish and morphine they needed to deaden their inner struggle, and calling his art a sedative of the worst kind, at once intoxicating and stupefying. The accusation that pursued Umm Kulthum has an explicit philosophical precedent: a beloved national artist charged with drugging a nation and serving as the symptom of its cultural decline.

The Sixties: A Moral Panic

In the America of the sixties, the old opiate charge returned with rock. In 1965 David Noebel published the pamphlet Communism, Hypnotism and the Beatles, claiming that the rock beat was a Soviet scheme worked out in Pavlov’s laboratory to place American youth under a mass hypnosis that would have them raising the red flag themselves. Four years later, the most famous announcement at Woodstock was a warning about the brown acid going around the crowd, until the warning itself became part of the show. And an entire generation, the hippies at its head, was reduced to Timothy Leary’s slogan: turn on, tune in, drop out.

The Old Root of the Accusation

This accusation — that art is a narcotic for the masses — is older than the hashish of Umm Kulthum’s concerts and the marijuana of the jazz players, descending from Marx’s formulation that religion is the opium of the people (1844), which migrated after him to every collective phenomenon, and in whose shadow it was said that Umm Kulthum was the opium of the Arabs. Days after her death, Fawwaz Traboulsi wrote “Umm Kulthum: A Painkiller That Cures No Disease” (February 1975); he did not deny that her voice sedated those who heard it, but he saw in it the only consolation available to people with no means of changing their circumstances, and moved the question from the painkiller to the pain that called for it. Football in Latin America was described in the same terms, and the Argentine dictatorship put the 1978 World Cup to work as a collective anaesthesia to silence social conflict in a time of state terror. Older than all of it is Juvenal’s bread and circuses, when a people that once conferred power no longer asked for anything else.

The literary side has its Western counterpart too: the Club des Hashischins in the Paris of the 1840s (Gautier, Baudelaire and Balzac at the Hôtel de Lauzun), Baudelaire’s Les Paradis artificiels (1860), De Quincey’s Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821). What Ihsan Abdel Quddous and Naguib Mahfouz did in Arabic has an older tradition behind it in the West.

The charge against Umm Kulthum, then, is no Arab peculiarity, but one chapter in a long history of accusing popular art of standing in for a drug. So why does a nation blame its singer for its stupor, instead of asking what actually put it under?

لاحق أمَّ كلثومَ اتهامٌ ظل يتردد، وهو أن حفلتها الشهرية كانت ترفع أسعار الحشيش يوم إذاعتها في الخمسينيات والستينيات، وعُدَّ ذلك دليلًا على الغيبوبة التي وقع فيها العرب وما صاحبها من انهزام سياسي.

يقول الشاعر عبد المنعم رمضان:

«أذكر أن حفلات الاستماع الشهرية التي كانت تقام في بيوت الحي الذي أسكنه — حي الوايلي شمال القاهرة — للاستماع إليها، كانت حفلات «الحشيش»، وكانت سماء القاهرة تمتلئ بالدخان الذي صدر عن تدخينه. أنا لا ألوم الحشيش ولا ألوم أم كلثوم، فقط أذكر ما حدث لي»

وكتب إحسان عبد القدوس عن تلك الليالي في «حتى لا يطير الدخان»، واصفًا الليلة بأنها

«الليلة التي يزدهر فيها الحشيش ويرتفع ثمنه ويصل إلى قمته»

أما نجيب محفوظ فجعل ليلة أم كلثوم، في «ميرامار» و«ثرثرة فوق النيل»، مرآةً تكشف تناقضات النفسية المصرية، إذ يجتمع فيها المصريون على اختلاف مشاربهم حول المذياع، يستمعون إلى «ثومة» ويتعاطون «الجوزة»، حتى صارا تخديرًا جمعيًّا وهروبًا مؤقتًا من مآسي الواقع.

ولم تبقَ التهمة في حدود الوصف الأدبي. فبعد هزيمة ١٩٦٧ أحيت أم كلثوم حفلات في العواصم العربية والغربية ورصدت ريعها للمجهود الحربي، فردّ عليها الشاعر الإسلامي يوسف العظم بقصيدةٍ عنوانها «خدّريهم يا كوكب الشرق»، يرى فيها أن أغاني العشق والآهات، والدماء لم تجفّ بعد، تخديرٌ جديد لأمةٍ مهزومة.

التوأم الأمريكي: الجاز والماريجوانا

ولم يكن اقتران نجوم الغناء بالمخدّر مقتصرًا على مصر. بل إنّ الجاز، قبل ثومة وجوزتها بعقدين، كان يُتَّهم بالماريجوانا في أمريكا العشرينيات والثلاثينيات. وظهرت في نيويورك مقاهي الحشيش («tea pads») التي تقوم مقام الغُرزة المصرية، ويقال إنها بلغت خمسمئة في الثلاثينيات، وكان الجوينت يُباع فيها بنحو عشرين سنتًا، وعُرف مدخنوها من العازفين بـ«الأفاعي» (vipers). وأشهرهم لويس أرمسترونغ الذي كان يدخن قبل العروض والتسجيلات، حتى اعتُقل في نوفمبر ١٩٣٠ وقضى تسعة أيام في السجن.

بل وثّق الموسيقيون الاقتران بأنفسهم فيما عُرف بـ«أغاني الريفر»، منها «Muggles» لأرمسترونغ (١٩٢٨) و«Reefer Man» لكاب كالاواي (١٩٣٢) و«Viper Mad» لسيدني بيشيه (١٩٣٨) و«Gimme a Pigfoot» لبيسي سميث. ثم جاء من يحمل التهمة رسميًّا. شنّ هاري أنسلنغر، أول مفوض لمكتب المخدرات الفيدرالي، حربه على الجاز بوصفه موسيقى المخدّر، واحتفظ بملف خاص باسم «الماريجوانا والموسيقيون» استهدف العازفين عمومًا، منهم إلينغتون وأرمسترونغ، حتى أبلغته وزارة الخزانة أنه يضيّع وقته. فوجّه جهده كله إلى بيلي هوليداي، وتوّج حملته بقانون ١٩٣٧ الذي أدخل الحشيش في التجريم الاتحادي فعلًا. وفي أمريكا حملت الدولةُ التهمةَ بجهازها الرسمي، بينما حملها في مصر المثقفون في رواياتهم وذكرياتهم.

نيتشه ضد فاغنر: التهمة بلا مخدّر

وقبل الغُرزة والـ«tea pads» بجيل، كانت التهمة قد ثبتت بلا مخدّر. ففي كرّاس «قضية فاغنر» (١٨٨٨) وجّه نيتشه التهمةَ نفسها إلى فنان ألمانيا القومي المحبوب: «أفاغنر إنسان على الإطلاق؟ أليس بالحري مرضًا؟… لقد جعل الموسيقى مريضة». ثم استعار المخدّر نفسه سلاحًا: «لقد وهب للنفوس اليائسة… الحشيشَ والمورفين اللذين لا غنى عنهما لتخدير صراعها الداخلي»، ووصف فن فاغنر بأنه «مسكّن من أردأ الأنواع، يجمع بين خاصتي الإسكار والتغبية». فللتهمة التي لاحقت أم كلثوم سابقة فلسفية صريحة: فنان قومي محبوب يُتَّهم بأنه مخدّر أمةٍ وعرَضُ انحطاطها الثقافي.

جيل الستينيات: الذعر الأخلاقي

وفي أمريكا الستينيات عادت التهمة إلى الأفيون مع الروك. أصدر ديفيد نوبل عام ١٩٦٥ كتيّب «الشيوعية والتنويم المغناطيسي والبيتلز»، زاعمًا أن إيقاع الروك خطة سوفييتية دُرست في «مختبر بافلوف» لإصابة شباب أمريكا بتنويمٍ جماعي يجعلهم «يرفعون الراية الحمراء بأنفسهم». وبعد أربع سنوات صار أشهر إعلان في مهرجان وودستوك تحذيرًا من «الأسيد البني» المنتشر بين الجمهور، حتى غدا التحذير نفسه جزءًا من العرض. واختُزل جيل الستينيات بأكمله، وفي مقدّمته حركة الهيبيز، في شعار تيموثي ليري: «Turn on, tune in, drop out» — اضبط موجتك على الوعي المخدَّر، ثم انسحب من الواقع.

الجذر القديم للاتهام

وهذه التهمة — أن يكون الفنّ مخدّرًا للجماهير — أقدم من حشيش حفلات أم كلثوم وماريجوانا نجوم الجاز، تنحدر من صيغة ماركس «الدين أفيون الشعوب» (١٨٤٤) التي هاجرت بعده إلى كل ظاهرة جمعية، وفي ظلّها قيل «أم كلثوم أفيون العرب». وبعد أيام من وفاتها كتب فوّاز طرابلسي «أم كلثوم: مسكّن الأوجاع لا يشفي من مرض» (فبراير ١٩٧٥)، فلم ينكر أن صوتها كان يخدّر سامعيه، لكنه رأى فيه العزاء الوحيد المتاح لمن لا حيلة له في تغيير الواقع، ونقل السؤال من المسكّن إلى الوجع الذي استدعاه. ووُصفت كرة القدم في أمريكا اللاتينية بالصيغة نفسها، ووظّفت ديكتاتورية الأرجنتين مونديال ١٩٧٨ «تخديرًا جماعيًّا» (anestesia colectiva) لإسكات الصراع الاجتماعي في زمن الإرهاب الرسمي. وأقدم من ذلك كله «الخبز والملاعب» عند جوفينال، حين لم يعد الشعب الذي كان يمنح السلطة يطلب غيرهما.

وحتى الشقّ الأدبي له قرينه الغربي في «نادي آكلي الحشيش» في باريس أربعينيات القرن التاسع عشر (غوتييه وبودلير وبالزاك في فندق دو لوزون)، وفي «الفردوس الاصطناعي» لبودلير (١٨٦٠)، و«اعترافات آكل أفيون إنجليزي» لدو كوينسي (١٨٢١). فما صنعه إحسان عبد القدوس ونجيب محفوظ عربيًّا له في الغرب تقليد أقدم منه.

فاتهام أم كلثوم ليس بدعًا عربيًّا، بل فصلٌ من تاريخ طويل يتكرر فيه اتهام الفن الجماهيري بأنه بديل المخدّر. فلماذا تلوم أمةٌ مطربتها على غيبوبتها، ولا تسأل نفسها عمّا يُغيّبها حقًّا؟

Nothing gives a person away the way their speech does. Before you learn their name, before you catch even the flicker of expression on their face, their tongue arrives ahead of them and testifies against them without their knowing it. Ali ibn Abi Talib said: a man lies hidden beneath his tongue. What lies hidden there is not a secret that slips out in a moment of inattention, but a disposition a person is formed by and cannot conceal, however hard they try. The tongue carries more than what is in the mind. It carries everything that moves through that half-lit region of conjecture — intuition, imagination, whatever never reaches awareness. The pitch of a voice tells you the world it grew up in; the timing of a silence tells you how someone was raised; the word they reach for is an extension of what they have read and kept. There is a field devoted to this now, psycholinguistics, which reads in a person’s speech and writing whatever stirs in that region, and finds that what gives them away lies between the lines, in the silences, in the small words no one notices. Every sentence you speak is a witness to how you were made.

When the Arabs said that half a person’s beauty is in their tongue, they were not exaggerating. If anything, they undersold it. We glance at a face once and move past, while speech is replayed in memory a thousand times. How many people have impressed you with their presence until they spoke and gave themselves away. And how many others you barely noticed until they spoke and filled the room with a light you would never have expected of them. A word reaches places in a person that the eye never reaches: that region of conjecture, the depths, trust, ease, that faint sense that you are with someone worth listening to.

The tongue is an instrument of influence before it is an instrument of expression. Sartre: words are loaded pistols, and the writer who speaks has fired the bullet. And what is fired cannot be called back. The Prophet said: is there anything that casts people into the Fire on their faces but the harvest of their tongues? The harvest is a metaphor worth pausing over. You reap only what you sowed, and words are seeds that do not choose when they come up, or where. You may drop a harmless sentence into a passing conversation and forget it within minutes, while it settles in the chest of whoever heard it as a permanent fact about themselves.

The distance between what a word intends and what it does is not a fault that goodwill can repair. It is the nature of language. For Gadamer, the meaning of what is said always outruns the one who said it. Meaning is not finished at the moment of speech; it takes shape at the moment of reception, when the word lands on the unguarded place in the listener and meets their history — old injuries, longings never admitted, questions they have not yet put to themselves. This is why a careless word can be the key to a door the speaker never imagined would open, or can reopen a place the speaker did not know was there.

Yaqub al-Hamduni put it with the delicacy of a poet who had examined the wound himself:

Wounds of the spear will close and knit again;

what the tongue has cut will never heal.

A spear wound heals with time. A word strikes something buried, the meaning a person carries about themselves, and that will not close. It seeps out of memory and into character, until they no longer recall the sentence they once heard, though it has become part of the structure through which they see themselves and the world. A remark made in jest one afternoon turns into a fact about the self — its source forgotten, its truth unquestioned. Which is what makes it more dangerous than anything said to your face, criticism or praise, since at least there you know when it was said and why.

Words, then, are not something that scatters into the air the moment they are spoken. Hence we feel the weight of the old Arabic saying: many a word has said to its speaker: leave me unsaid. Once a word leaves your mouth it is no longer yours. It becomes a free creature in someone else’s world, subject to that world’s laws and not to the laws of your intention.

A wound hurts, and there is mercy in the pain: it tells the body to fight and the person to treat it before it turns septic. But the tongue leaves something more insidious in us than any wound to the body. It corrupts taste itself. The corruption of taste works through the unlit regions of the self — reaching the tongue, the ear, the mind, the spirit, without its owner feeling that anything has changed in them.

Al-Jahiz, the great prose writer of ninth-century Basra, caught this in Al-Bayan wa-l-Tabyin. He describes a corrupt meaning not as a word that is heard and passes without consequence, but as a creature that nests in the heart, then lays eggs, then hatches its brood. And once it has knelt the way a camel kneels, stretching its neck along the ground and settling its throat into the earth, it can hardly be pulled up; it is no longer a passing idea but a thread woven into character. His image is exact description before it is ornament. A bad idea needs no one to be persuaded by it. It needs a taste not fine enough to recognize it and turn it away.

The most unsettling of his observations is that the coarse, mongrel word clings faster to the tongue, sits easier in the ear, and fastens tighter to the heart than the noble one. There is a counterpart to this in what the psychologist Paul Rozin observed about disgust: one cockroach ruins a bowl of cherries, and one cherry does nothing for a bowl of cockroaches. Coarseness travels by contact; quality does not.

Coarseness clings to a person more stubbornly than quality does. Quality asks for effort in the saying and an equal effort in the hearing, while coarseness slides into the depths unopposed, because it asks nothing of the listener, no rising to meet it. Corruption, as he puts it, reaches people faster and fastens tighter to their natures.

In the same vein, a month in the company of fools and boors fouls the taste beyond what a lifetime among the wise can wash out. Eloquence, intelligence, fine taste are acquisitions; they come only through learning, hardship, and unbroken practice. Ignorance and vulgarity are demolitions, and demolition needs no teacher. Rich untilled ground where no good seed is planted is exactly where the wind brings poisoned seed.

Al-Jahiz closes with something permanent in human nature: ignorance requires nothing beyond giving up learning, and the ruin of eloquence requires nothing beyond giving up the search for the better word. You do not have to learn coarseness. You need only stop choosing well, and it will fill whatever places in you have gone untended. Orwell:

language grows corrupt when our thinking does, and its slovenliness then works back on thought and makes bad thinking easier.

A good word, by contrast, does its deepest work in the awareness of the one who speaks it, before it ever falls on the heart of the one who hears. It reshapes the speaker in the moment of speech. For al-Jahiz, when the wording answers the meaning, and the meaning is noble and the wording eloquent, it works on hearts as rain works on good ground. Whoever grows used to fine speech grows used to fine thinking, since the tongue shapes the mind as much as it carries it. We do not only speak what we think; in the end we think in whatever our tongues have grown used to handling. Language is the twin of thought and the vessel thought develops in, and it works not only in the region of knowledge but in the region of conjecture too — even a sleeper’s dreams come to him carried in language. Hence Wittgenstein:

the limits of my language mean the limits of my world.

Whoever holds back from speaking for fear of what their words might do is holding their tongue, not keeping silence. The difference, as the grammarian Fadil al-Samarrai puts it, is that silence is born of manners and wisdom, while holding the tongue is born of fear. Which is why the Prophet did not say let him hold his tongue, but let him speak well or keep silent — making silence the companion of good speech rather than a replacement for speech altogether.

We take part in building other people’s worlds, whether we mean to or not. To grasp that is to weigh what you say.

God said: and speak well to people. The good here is unqualified — not narrowed by kinship, or interest, or rank. Good speech extended to everyone, regardless of whether they have earned it, because good speech is owed to the self that speaks it.

So half your beauty is in your tongue, and the other half is what your tongue makes in others.

ما من شيء يكشف الإنسانَ كما يكشفه كلامُه. قبل أن تعرف اسمه، قبل أن تلمح حتى إختلاجات وجهه، يسبقه لسانُه إليك، فيشهد عليه من حيث لا يدري. قال الإمام عليّ: «المرءُ مخبوءٌ تحت لسانه»، والمخبوء هنا ليس سرًّا يزِلّ به لسانُ صاحبه في لحظة سهو، بل طبعٌ جُبل عليه صاحبه، فلا يملك إخفاءه مهما حاول. اللسان لا يَنقل ما في العقل فحسب، بل كلّ ما يمرّ في منطقة الظنّ: الحدس والخيال وما لا يبلغه الوعي — نبرةُ صوته تحكي بيئته، وتوقيتُ سكوته يَنمّ عن تربيته، ومفردتُه امتدادٌ لثقافته. وقد صار هذا علمًا قائمًا يُسمّى علم النفس اللغوي، يقرأ في كلام المرء وكتابته ما يعتمل في منطقة الظنّ، ويجد أشدّ ما يفضحه فيما بين السطور وفي الصمت وفي الحروف الصغيرة التي تمرّ بلا انتباه. كلُّ جملة تقولها شاهدً على نشأتك.

والعرب حين قالوا قديمًا «نصفُ جمال الإنسان في لسانه» لم يبالغوا قطّ. بل لعلّهم بخسوا الكلام حقّه. فالوجه نلمحه مرّةً ثمّ نمضي، بينما الكلام يُعاد على أسماعنا في الذاكرة الف مرّة. كم من إنسان رأيتَه فأعجبك حضوره، حتى تكلّم فبان عوارُه. وكم من آخر لم تلتفت إلى هيئته، حتى نطق فملأ المكان نورًا لم تتوقّعه منه. ذلك أنّ الكلمة تصل إلى مواضع في النفس لا تصل إليها العين: تصل إلى منطقة الظنّ تلك، إلى الأعماق، إلى الثقة، إلى الطمأنينة، إلى ذلك الشعور الخفيّ بأنّك أمام إنسان يستحقّ أن تُصغي إليه.

اللسان أداة تأثير قبل أن يكون أداة تعبير. يقول سارتر: «الكلمات مسدّسات محشوّة، والكاتب متى تكلّم فقد أطلق الرصاص» — وما يُطلَق لا يُستردّ. ويقول النبيّ ﷺ: «وهل يُكِبُّ الناسَ في النارِ على وجوههم إلا حصائدُ ألسنتهم؟» — والحصاد استعارةٌ تستحقّ التأمّل: أنت لا تحصد إلا ما زرعتَ، والكلمات بذورٌ لا تختار متى تنبت ولا أين. قد تُلقي جملةً بريئة في حديث عابر، فتنساها بعد لحظات، بينما تستقرّ في صدر من سمعها كأنّها حقيقة أبديّة عن نفسه.

والتفاوت بين مقصد الكلمة وأثرها ليس خللًا يمكن إصلاحه بحسن النيّة. هذه طبيعة اللغة ذاتها. وعند غادامير أنّ معنى الكلام دائمًا ما يتجاوز قائله. المعنى لا يكتمل في لحظة النطق، بل يتشكّل في لحظة التلقّي، حين تسقط الكلمة في موضعها الهشّ من روح السامع، فتلتقي بتاريخه: جراحه القديمة، ولواعجه التي لم يُفصح عنها، والأسئلة التي لم يطرحها على نفسه بعد. لهذا قد تكون الكلمة الطائشة مفتاحًا لبابٍ لم يخطر على بال صاحبه أنّه سيُفتح ذات يوم، أو تنكأ موضعًا لم يكن المتكلّم يعرف بوجوده أصلًا.

عبّر يعقوبُ الحمدونيّ عن هذا برهافة الشاعر الذي عاين جرح الكلمة:

«جِراحاتُ السِّنانِ لها التئامٌ … ولا يلتامُ ما جرحَ اللسانُ»

جرح السنان يندمل مع الزمن، أمّا جرح الكلمة فيصيب معنًى غائرًا يحمله الإنسان عن ذاته، وهذا ما يستحيل التئامه. وهو يتسرّب من الذاكرة إلى الطبع، بحيث لا يعود صاحبها يتذكّر الجملة التي سمعها، لكنّها تصير جزءًا من البنية التي يرى بها نفسه والعالم. تتحوّل من جملةٍ قيلت ذات يوم على سبيل المزاح إلى «حقيقة» عن الذات، قد لا يعرف صاحبها مصدرها ولا يشكّ في صحّتها. وهذا ما يجعلها أخطر من الكلمات التي تُقال في حضورك — نقدًا كانت أم مديحًا — لأنّك على الأقلّ تعرف لماذا ومتى قيلت.

ليست الكلمات إذن ممّا يتبدّد في الفراغ لحظة نطقه. ومن هنا نستشعر ثقل المثل العربيّ: «رُبَّ كلمةٍ قالت لصاحبها: دعني» — الكلمة، حين تخرج من فمك، لم تعد ملكك. صارت كائنًا حرًّا في عالم الآخر، يخضع لقوانينه هو، لا لقوانين نيّتك أنت.

الجرح يؤلم، وفي الألم رحمةٌ، فهو إشارةٌ للجسد بأن يقاوم، وللإنسان بأن يعالجه قبل أن يتلوّث. لكنّ للّسان أثرًا أخبثَ في أعماقنا من جرح الجسد، إذ يلوّث الذوق نفسه. فساد الذوق يتغلغل في المناطق المعتمة من النفس — يبلغ اللسان والأذن والعقل والروح دون أن يشعر صاحبه بأنّ شيئًا قد تغيّر فيه.

رصد الجاحظ هذا في «البيان والتبيين». يصف المعنى الفاسد لا بوصفه كلمةً عابرةً تُسمع دون عواقب، بل بوصفه كائنًا يعشّش في القلب، ثمّ يبيض، ثمّ يُفرخ. حتى إذا برك كما يبرك البعير فمدّ عنقه على الأرض وضرب بجِرانه، كاد اقتلاعه يستحيل، إذ لم يعد فكرةً طارئة بل سمةً منسوجة في طبعه. واستعارة الجاحظ هنا توصيفٌ دقيق قبل أن تكون زينةً بلاغية. الفكرة الرديئة لا تحتاج إلى من يقتنع بها، بل إلى ذوقٍ لم يُصقل بما يكفي ليتبيّنها ويرفضها.

والملاحظة الأشدّ إرباكًا عند الجاحظ: أنّ اللفظ الهجين الرديء «أعلقُ باللسان، وآلفُ للسمع، وأشدُّ التحامًا بالقلب» من اللفظ الشريف النبيه. ولهذا نظيرٌ فيما رصده بول روزين في سيكولوجيّة الاشمئزاز: صرصورٌ واحد يُفسد وعاءً من الكرز، وكرزةٌ واحدة لا تُصلح وعاءً من الصراصير. الرداءة تنتقل بالمخالطة، والجودة لا تنتقل بها.

الرداءة ألصق بالنفس من الجودة. الجودة تتطلّب جهدًا في القول وجهدًا موازيًا في السَّماع، أمّا الرداءة فتنزلق إلى أعماق النفس بلا مقاومة، لأنّها لا تطلب من سامعها أن يرتقي إليها. الفساد في نظره «أسرعُ إلى الناس، وأشدُّ التحامًا بالطبائع».

ومن هذا الباب أنّ مجالسة الجهّال والسخفاء شهرًا واحدًا تلوّث الذوق بما لا تنقّيه مجالسةُ الحكماء في دهرٍ كامل. البيان والعقل والذوق الرفيع مكتسبات لا تتحقّق إلا بتعلّمٍ ومكابدةٍ ومدارسةٍ متواصلة. أمّا الجهل والابتذال فحصال هدم تحتاج إلى معلم. والأرض الخصبة البكر التي لا يُغرس فيها طيّبُ البذور، تجلب إليها الرياحُ بذورًا سامّة.

ويختم الجاحظ بسمةٍ خالدة من سمات الطبيعة البشرية: الجهل لا يحتاج إلى أكثر من ترك التعلّم. وفساد البيان لا يحتاج إلى أكثر من ترك انتقاء اللفظ الشريف. أنت لا تحتاج إلى أن تتعلّم الرداءة — يكفي أن تتوقّف عن انتقاء الجيّد حتى يملأ الرديء تلك المواضع في نفسك التي أهملتها. وعند أورويل:

اللغة تفسد حين تفسد أفكارنا، ثمّ ترتدّ رثاثتُها على الفكر فتجعل الرديء منه أيسر.

أمّا الكلمة الطيّبة فأثرها الأعمق يبدأ في وعي قائلها، قبل أن تقع على قلب سامعها، فهي تُعيد تشكيله في اللحظة التي ينطقها. وعند الجاحظ أنّ اللفظ إذا شاكل المعنى وكان المعنى شريفًا واللفظ بليغًا، «صنع في القلوب صنيع الغيث في التربة الكريمة». من يعتاد الكلام الحَسَن يعتاد بالضرورة التفكير الحسن، لأنّ اللسان يصوغ العقل بقدر ما ينقله. الإنسان لا يتكلّم بما يفكّر فيه فحسب — بل يفكّر، في النهاية، بما اعتاد أن يتداوله لسانُه. فاللغة صنو الفكر ووعاؤه الذي يتطوّر فيه؛ لا تعمل في منطقة العلم وحدها، بل في منطقة الظنّ أيضًا — حتى الأحلام يراها النائم في حاملٍ لغويّ. ومن هنا قول فيتغنشتاين: «حدود لغتي هي حدود عالمي».

ومن أمسك عن الحديث خوفًا من أثر كلماته، فذلك سكوتٌ لا صمت — والفرق بينهما، كما يقول فاضل السامرائي، أنّ الصمت يتولّد من الأدب والحكمة، والسكوت يتولّد من الخوف. ولذلك لم يقل النبيّ ﷺ: فليسكت، بل «فليقل خيرًا أو ليصمت» — فجعل الصمت قرين القول الحسن لا بديلًا عن الكلام كلّه.

نحن نشارك في بناء عوالم الآخرين، شئنا أم أبينا. وإدراك هذه الحقيقة يجعلك تزن ما تقول بحكمة.

قال تعالى: ﴿وَقُولُوا لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا﴾ — والحُسن هنا مطلق، لم يُقيّده بقرابة ولا بمصلحة ولا بمقام. حُسنًا ممتدًّا للجميع، بغضّ النظر عمّا إذا كانوا يستحقّونه؛ فالقائل يستحقّ أن يكون حَسَنًا في ذاته.

فنصف جمال الإنسان في لسانه، والنصف الآخر ما يصنعه لسانُه في الآخرين.

What wears people down is not simply failing at life. Failure is an external event, tied to the hand of fate: a door closes, a chance slips away. It is the suppressed talent, lodged somewhere deep, that finds no outlet through which it can take form, and turns with time from the promise of a wider life into an existential burden.

The trouble begins with a private conviction that something is surging beneath your ribs that has never been granted the right to appear. Some have tried to give that thing free rein and failed, and know the bitterness of it. Others never found a door, or a setting in which to release it. The difference between them is a difference in awareness: some know what they lost, others never learned what they were missing. The effect is identical either way — a creative energy with nowhere to go.

That energy, held down, accumulates over the years like sediment at the bottom of a jar. Nietzsche touched a corner of it in the preface to Thus Spoke Zarathustra, when he made inner chaos the condition for giving birth to a dancing star. But chaos that bears no star does not settle, and latent possibility does not stay suspended forever. Failing to find a form worthy of it, it comes out in a form unworthy of the person — and the ugliness is aesthetic energy, shut in too long. In On the Genealogy of Morals Nietzsche goes further: the slave revolt in morality begins when resentment itself becomes creative and gives birth to values, the resentment of creatures denied the true reaction: the deed itself, and compensating instead with an imaginary revenge. In the case of a suppressed gift, whatever fails to become a mark or beauty goes looking for some other form to live in, and sometimes finds only the dark ones.

You see him in the corner of a café, or in a meeting that has nothing to do with him. He watches the others with something closer to defeat than to envy. He listens to their small achievements, smiles politely, and goes home carrying something he cannot name. He may not know himself which it is: an energy in him that never came out, or a flattering picture he drew to console himself for what he couldn’t do.

Failure in the ordinary sense is another matter entirely. Many of these people have succeeded at most of what they attempted, and still carry a feeling that never leaves them — that the life they lived falls short of the life they believed they deserved. Kierkegaard, in The Sickness unto Death:

the greatest danger, losing oneself, can occur in complete quiet in the world, as though it were nothing at all. And in the same book: by not venturing, it is terribly easy to lose what would be hard to lose in even the most dangerous venture — the self.

Thoreau puts it in a line in Walden:

the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.

And Oliver Wendell Holmes, in “The Voiceless”:

Alas for those that never sing, / But die with all their music in them.

Given time, suppressed talent does not stay innocent. It starts as a vague sadness, slowly hardens into irritation with the world and with people and with the days themselves, and ends sometimes in an aversion to success stories, and to anyone who has found a foothold in the light.

The longer the confinement lasts, the more the talent stiffens into a fixed idea about the person who bears it, until they see themselves from the angle of the outcast who was never understood, the one denied a chance at life. And once exclusion and deprivation become the name a person is known by, the energy stops looking for a form to emerge in and folds itself around its wound, and the narcissistic injury becomes the identity. Anyone thinking this way imagines they are observing the prison from outside, when they are one of its bars: each time they turn the deprivation over, they set the picture of themselves more firmly in place, and look for a cure in the very instrument that inflicted the wound.

Suppressed talent runs in reverse. Erich Fromm, in Escape from Freedom:

the more the drive toward life is thwarted, the stronger the drive toward destruction; the more life is realized, the weaker the destructiveness. Destructiveness is the outcome of unlived life.

Freud, in Civilization and Its Discontents, describes sublimation — instinct redirected into a higher cultural channel. Civilization, for Freud, rests on the repression of powerful instincts and the refusal of their satisfaction. Creativity is sublimation that works; neurosis is sublimation that fails. What Freud describes as a mechanism, Ibn al-Qayyim frames as a choice. In al-Wabil al-Sayyib:

if you do not occupy the soul with truth, it will occupy you with falsehood; if the heart is not inhabited by the love of God, it will inevitably be inhabited by the love of created things — so choose one of the two courses for yourself.

And yet this energy is, at bottom, a necessity. Maslow, in Motivation and Personality, makes it the condition of being at peace with oneself:

a musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be at peace with himself; what a man can be, he must be.

Genius tests you before it lets you claim it. In Letters to a Young Poet, Rilke sends the questioner back to himself:

ask yourself, in the stillest hour of your night, whether you must write. If the answer is that you must, then build your life around that necessity. And when the necessity is resisted, it does not die down — it turns feral.

From Kafka’s letter to Max Brod:

a writer who does not write is a monster courting madness, and his life without writing becomes far worse, unbearable, and can only end in insanity.

Talent has another prison, one outside the self. Virginia Woolf, in A Room of One’s Own, imagines Shakespeare’s sister:

any woman born with a great gift in the sixteenth century would certainly have gone crazed or shot herself; a gifted girl who tried to use her gift for poetry would have been so thwarted and hindered by other people, so tortured and pulled apart by her own contrary instincts, that she must have lost her health and her sanity.

The same note sounds in George Eliot’s prelude to Middlemarch:

many Theresas have been born who found no epic life — only a life of mistakes, the offspring of a spiritual grandeur ill-matched with the meanness of opportunity.

And when the outlet is sealed, the body pays the price. Al-Mutanabbi:

when souls are great, the bodies wear themselves out in pursuit of what those souls want.

In the contemporary Arab setting, Mustafa Hijazi, in Social Backwardness, describes how the oppressed person turns inward or identifies with the one who dominates them, so that repressed energy passes from existential possibility into psychological damage.

And in the seventieth saying attributed to the Gospel of Thomas:

if you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you; if you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.

That destruction mostly takes place in dark territory, well out of anyone’s sight, in a nastier form: an emotional coldness no warmth can thaw, and a hard sense of living an unlived life in some parallel world, in the shadow of what might have been.

So: is talent a blessing? It certainly is, for anyone who finds an outlet and a setting for it. And a curse for anyone locked in with it in a prison whose key they are carrying without knowing. The irony is that the genius given to a person to build a life with, and to be of use to others, is the same thing that pulls the life down when it finds no form to take. Confined energy does not vanish; it works away in the depths, and if the silence lasts long enough, it turns against the one who holds it.

أشدّ ما يُرهق الإنسان ليس أن يفشل في حياته وحسب، لأنّ الفشل حدثٌ خارجيّ مربوطٌ بيد الأقدار: بابٌ أُغلق، أو فرصةٌ ضاعت. بل الموهبة المقموعة القابعة في أعماق الفرد، التي لا تجد منفذًا لتحقيق صيرورتها، تتحوّل مع الزمن من وعدٍ بحياةٍ أوسع إلى عبءٍ وجوديّ.

المعضلة أن يشعر المرء، في قرارة نفسه، بأنّ في أعماقه شيئًا يتلاطم بين جوانحه لم يُمنح حقّ الظهور بعد. ثمّة من حاول أن يطلق العنان لذلك الشيء فلم يستطع، فأدرك مرارته. وهناك من لم يجد بوّابةً ولا سياقًا يُطلقه فيه. الفرق بينهما في الوعي؛ أحدهما يعرف ما فقده، والآخر لم يعرف ما يفوته. أمّا الأثر فمشترك في الحالتين: طاقةٌ خلّاقة لم تجد منفذًا.

وهذه الطاقة الخلّاقة المكبوتة تتراكم عبر الزمن كالترسّبات في قاع إناء. نيتشه، في مقدمة «هكذا تكلم زرادشت»، لمس طرفًا من هذه الطاقة الإبداعية المحبوسة حين جعل الفوضى في الإنسان شرطًا لولادة النجم الراقص. لكن الفوضى التي لا تلد نجمًا لا تهدأ؛ فالإمكانات الإبداعية الكامنة لا تبقى معلّقة إلى الأبد. فإن لم تجد صورةً تليق بها، خرجت في صورة لا تليق بصاحبها، والقبح هنا يخرج نتيجة الطاقة الجماليّة في الإنسان حين تُحبس طويلًا. وفي كتابه «في أصل الأخلاق وفصلها» يذهب نيتشه إلى أبعد من ذلك، فيرى أن ثورة العبيد في الأخلاق تبدأ حين تصير الضغينة نفسها خلاّقة وتلد قيمًا: ضغينة كائنات حُرمت ردّ الفعل الحقيقي، أي الفعل، فعوّضت عنه بانتقام وهمي. وفي سياق العبقرية المكبوتة، ما أخفق في أن يصير أثرًا أو جمالًا يلتمس صورةً أخرى يعيش بها، فلا يجد أحيانًا إلا الصور المظلمة.

صاحب العبقرية المكبوتة، تراه أحيانًا في زاوية مقهى، أو في اجتماع عمل لا يعنيه. ينظر إلى من حوله نظرةً فيها من الانكسار أكثر مما فيها من الحسد. يُصغي إلى حديثهم عن إنجازاتهم الصغيرة، ويبتسم ابتسامةً مهذّبة، ثم يعود إلى بيته مثقلًا بشيء يستعصي على التسمية. وقد لا يعرف هو نفسه: أفي أعماقه طاقةٌ لم تظهر، أم صورةٌ رسمها ليعزّي بها عجزه؟

والفشل بالمعنى المتداول شيء آخر. بعضهم نجح في معظم تجاربه، ويحمل مع ذلك شعورًا لا يفارقه بأنّ حياته التي عاشها دون مستوى الحياة التي كان يظنّ نفسه أهلًا لها. عند كيركغارد، في «المرض حتى الموت»:

«أعظم خطر، أن يفقد المرء نفسه، يمكن أن يحدث في هدوء تامّ في العالم، كأنه لا شيء على الإطلاق.» وفي الكتاب نفسه: «بعدم المغامرة يسهُل فقدانُ ما يصعب فقدانه في أخطر المغامرات… ألا وهو الذات»

وثورو، في «ولدن»، يختصر الحال في سطر:

«غالبية الناس يعيشون حياةً من اليأس الصامت»

ولأوليفر وندل هولمز، في قصيدته «الذين لا صوت لهم»:

«الويل لمن لم يغنّوا قط، وماتوا وموسيقاهم كلها في داخلهم»

ومع الزمن، لا تبقى الموهبة المحبوسة بريئة. تبدأ حزنًا غامضًا، ثم تنقلب على مهل ضيقًا من العالم والناس والأيام. وتنتهي أحيانًا نفورًا من قصص الناجحين، وممّن وجدوا لأنفسهم موطئ قدمٍ تحت بقعة الضوء.

ومع طول الحبس تتصلّب الموهبة فتستحيل إلى فكرة ثابتة عن صاحبها، فيرى نفسه من زاوية المنبوذ الذي لم يُفهم، والذي حُرم فرصته في الحياة. ومتى صار النبذ والحرمان اسمًا يُعرَف به المرء، كفّت الطاقة عن طلب صورةٍ تخرج فيها، وأخذت تنطوي على جرحها، فالجرح النرجسيّ صار الهويّة. وصاحب هذا النمط من التفكير يظنّ نفسه ناظرًا إلى سجنه من خارجه، بينما هو قضيبٌ من قضبانه: كلّما فكّر في حرمانه ثبّت صورته عن نفسه، فيلتمس الدواء من الأداة نفسها التي صنعته.

الموهبة المكبوتة تعمل في الاتجاه المضادّ. يكتب إريك فروم في «الهروب من الحرية»:

«كلما أُحبط دافع الحياة قويَ دافع التدمير؛ وكلما تحققت الحياة ضعفت قوة التدمير. التدميرية هي ثمرة الحياة التي لم تُعَش»

فرويد، في «مآزق الحضارة»، يتحدث عن التسامي: تحويل الغريزة إلى مسار ثقافي أعلى. الحضارة، عند فرويد، تنهض على كبت الغرائز القوية وعدم إشباعها. الإبداع تسامٍ ناجح، والعُصاب فشلُه. وما وصفه فرويد آليةً يضعه ابن القيم اختيارًا. في «الوابل الصيب» يقول:

«النفس إن لم تشغلها بالحق شغلتك بالباطل، والقلب إن لم تسكنه محبة الله سكنته محبة المخلوقين لا محالة… فاختر لنفسك إحدى الخطتين»

لكنّ هذه الطاقة ضرورة في أصلها. ماسلو، في «الدافع والشخصية»، يجعلها شرطًا للسلام مع النفس:

«على الموسيقي أن يصنع موسيقى، وعلى الفنان أن يرسم، وعلى الشاعر أن يكتب، إن أراد أن يظل في سلام مع نفسه. ما يستطيع الإنسان أن يكونه، لا بد أن يكونه»

والعبقرية تمتحن صاحبها قبل أن يدّعيها. وفي رسائله إلى شاعر شاب، يردّ ريلكه السائلَ إلى نفسه:

«اسأل نفسك في أكثر ساعات ليلك صمتًا: أيجب عليّ أن أكتب؟» فإن جاء الجواب «يجب»، فعلى المرء أن يبني حياته وفق هذه الضرورة. وحين تُقاوَم، لا تخمد، بل تتوحّش.

وفي رسالة كافكا إلى ماكس برود:

«الكاتب الذي لا يكتب وحشٌ يستفزّ الجنون»، وحياته حين لا يكتب تصير «أسوأ بكثير، لا تُحتمل، وتنتهي حتمًا إلى الجنون»

وللموهبة سجنٌ آخر خارج صاحبها. فرجينيا وولف، في «غرفة تخص المرء»، تتخيّل «أخت شكسبير»:

«أي امرأة تولد بموهبة عظيمة في القرن السادس عشر كانت ستُجنّ حتمًا، أو تطلق النار على نفسها… فالفتاة الموهوبة التي تحاول توظيف موهبتها في الشعر كانت ستُحبط وتُعرقل من الناس، وتُمزّقها غرائزها المتعارضة، حتى تفقد صحتها وعقلها يقينًا»

ويتردّد الصدى نفسه في تمهيد جورج إليوت لـ«ميدل مارش»:

«وُلدت تيريزات كثيرات لم يجدن حياة ملحمية… بل حياة من الأخطاء، ثمرةَ عظمةٍ روحية لا يناسبها ضَنَك الفرص»

وحين يُسدّ المنفذ يدفع البدن الثمن. يقول المتنبي:

«وإذا كانت النفوس كبارًا / تعبت في مرادها الأجسام»

وفي السياق العربي المعاصر، يصف مصطفى حجازي في «التخلف الاجتماعي» كيف ينكفئ الإنسان المقهور على ذاته أو يتماهى مع المتسلّط، فتتحوّل الطاقة المكبوتة من إمكانٍ وجوديّ إلى عطبٍ نفسيّ.

وفي القول السبعين المنسوب إلى إنجيل توما:

«إن أخرجتَ ما في داخلك، خلّصك ما أخرجت. وإن لم تُخرج ما في داخلك، أهلكك ما لم تُخرجه»

وأكثر ما يقع هذا الهلاك في مناطق مظلمة بعيدة عن أعين الناس، في صورة أخبث: برودٌ عاطفيّ لا يشفيه دفء، وشعورٌ قاسٍ بأنّ المرء يعيش حياته غير المعاشة في عالمٍ موازٍ، في ظلّ ما كان يمكن أن يكون.

هل الموهبة نعمة؟ هي بالتأكيد نعمةٌ لمن يجد لها منفذًا وسياقًا. ونقمةٌ لمن يُحبس معها في سجنٍ يحمل مفتاحه دون أن يدري. والمفارقة أنّ العبقرية التي وُهبت للإنسان ليبني بها حياته ويخدم الإنسانية، هي ذاتها ما يهدمها حين لا يجد لها تشكّلًا. والطاقة المحبوسة لا تختفي؛ تعتمل في أعماق المرء، فإن طال بها الصمت، انقلبت على صاحبها.

In a Dior commercial for J’adore, Charlize Theron walks down a corridor drenched in gold, stripping off her necklace and then her gown, and murmurs: Gold is cold. Diamonds are dead. A limousine is a car. Don’t pretend. Feel what’s real. The scene closes on the name of the perfume: J’adore Dior.

In a fifteenth-century panel by Hugo van der Goes, Eve stands in the same scene: naked, her arm reaching for the fruit, and at her right the serpent with a woman’s face. Five centuries lie between the two images, and the same structure keeps reproducing itself — a female body positioned between desire and sin.

The usual question is why women are linked with the devil in almost every culture. But the question carries more than it can prove. Cultures did not only demonize women; they also deified them, and often did both at once. Shakti and Kali, Eve and Mary, Ishtar and Lilith, the Virgin Mother and the whore. Sanctity and demonization are two poles of a single dialectic: a woman is raised above the human or bound to the devil, and either way her humanity is taken from her. What needs explaining is the dialectic itself.

Still, the demonic pole holds a particular place in the Abrahamic and Western tradition. Eve, who tempted Adam in the Christian reading. Lilith, consort of demons. The witches of Europe who signed their pacts with Satan. And the woman’s body today, selling you a car, a perfume, a plane ticket. From the fallen Eve to Theron in the perfume commercial lies two thousand years, and the function has not changed: a woman stands between a man and a forbidden desire, and then her body is made to carry the weight of what he does. The Quran, for its part, does not lay that weight on Eve alone — Iblis tempted them both, and it was Adam whom the text singles out as having disobeyed. And yet the whole discourse of fitna grew up in the Islamic tradition anyway: her creation from the crooked rib, her voice as nakedness, her visibility as an invitation to sin. Commentators and transmitters built it; the Quran itself does not authorize it. The structure, then, is stronger than the religious text. It does not wait for the text’s permission. Which leaves the question: why did these cultures in particular load this symbolic weight onto women, and what makes the demonization renew itself each time in a new form?

The standard explanation points to male domination: a man fears a woman’s hold over him and so he demonizes her. The materialist explanation adds that the myth is a cover for the necessity of controlling the womb and the bloodline. Both describe real mechanisms, but both stop at the threshold of the essential question, which is why male domination over women took the form of demonization rather than any other. Power is exercised in a thousand ways — enslavement, exclusion, indifference. What happened to women was something else. They were not merely treated as lesser beings; they were loaded with an enormous symbolic power: the power to seduce, the power to carry what he will not own in himself, the power to bring a man down from the height of his purity into the depths of his sin. The slave, in some cultures, was demonized too — racist discourse tied him to animality and to unbridled sexual appetite — but his demonization served exclusion and violence, while hers served containment: keeping a loose halter on her neck, so that she stays close and submissive at once. Even what happened to the witches of seventeenth-century Europe, burned and cast out at the margins, did not contradict that containment but served it. Violence performed in public on a few women is a warning that keeps the rest close and submissive. This difference in function is what subjugation alone cannot explain.

What is proposed here is not a replacement for those two explanations, the domination account and the bloodline account, but an answer to what they left unsaid: demonization is a symbolic solution to a structural contradiction. A man needs a woman — for reproduction, for desire, for continuity — but he cannot control her completely without destroying that very need. It is true that many systems codified the enslavement of the desired woman, from captivity to concubinage to the harem. But that enslavement remained possible where ideology drew a hard line between categories of women: the free woman in one place, the slave or the captive in another. The contradiction in question only appears when a culture acknowledges a woman as a man’s spiritual equal in principle. At that point total control becomes impossible without desire itself losing its value, because a woman stripped of her will is necessarily emptied of her allure. What Simone de Beauvoir wrote in The Second Sex comes close to this: humanity is framed as male, and man defines woman not as an independent subject but in relation to himself, an Other he needs in order to establish his own self. But that Other can never be fully converted into an object. She must be desired and submissive, close and dangerous, necessary and threatening. This contradiction cannot be resolved materially. It requires a myth.

The myth begins by converting a man’s weakness into a danger residing in the woman, and then using that danger to justify controlling her. Once a woman is bound to the devil, a man’s inability to resist her becomes intelligible: the failure is no longer a weakness in him but a malignant power in her. The devil does not work by brute force but by temptation, and temptation requires a desire already present in the tempted. So the equation inverts. A man does not acknowledge his own appetite; he projects it onto the woman as a satanic capacity.

What a person cannot bear to see in himself, he finds it easy to see in a woman.

Then comes the most dangerous justification of all: protection. We are not controlling you for our sake; we are protecting you from the danger you carry without meaning to. And so control becomes care, confinement becomes protection, humiliation becomes piety. A fall always demands someone to blame, and blame cannot fall on God without collapsing the religious structure, nor on the man without contradicting his centrality. Every fall needs an Eve eating the apple.

The myth then reduces the woman to her body, the source of danger to a man’s order. For the patriarchal order, her mind and spirit are never as necessary as her body, and so the body becomes the arena of the struggle. In it a man loses control over himself when desire overtakes him; loses confidence in his lineage when doubt about his paternity creeps in; loses the stability of his order when the prospect of sexual disorder appears. Hence those elaborate rituals: veiling to tame the body, seclusion to sever it from the sources of its power, laws of purity and pollution to remind it that it is a thing requiring constant regulation. The anthropologist Mary Douglas observed in Purity and Danger (1966) that whatever threatens the boundaries between social categories — pure and impure, inside and outside, sacred and profane — is treated as a danger requiring ritual containment. And a woman’s body, with its menstruation, its pregnancies, its nursing, is the first threat to all of those boundaries.

Then came modernity, which did not free women from this association but rewrote it

Advertising uses the female body by the same logic the myth used. The body tempts, temptation generates desire, desire leads to an act — the purchase — and the act leads to a fall: debt, compulsive consumption, the ruin of the economic self. The difference is that the old system warned you of a fall in the next world, while the new one promises you salvation in this one. The religious devil says: fall with me and you lose paradise. The consumer devil says: fall with me and you enter the paradise of beauty, youth, and status.

An objector might say that capitalism commodifies the male body too — in watches, cars, and screen heroes. True. But there the product promises a man that he will become that body, not that he will own it.

A man is promised he can become something better; a woman is promised she can be something someone else owns.

That reveals a deeper symbolic structure, one capitalism inherited rather than created.

This is not a rhetorical comparison. The advertising industry was built — sometimes deliberately, sometimes by instinct — on cashing in the symbolic charge the female body has carried for thousands of years. Edward Bernays’s 1929 campaign exposes the mechanism from a different angle. Bernays, the father of modern public relations and Freud’s nephew, wanted to persuade women to smoke in public, so he consulted the psychoanalyst A. A. Brill, who told him that for a woman the cigarette is a phallic symbol and that smoking is an act of liberation. He named his campaign for Lucky Strike “Torches of Freedom” and sent elegant models smoking down the streets of New York on Easter Sunday. Here the female body is not a device for selling a product to men; it is a symbolic field on which the battle for freedom itself is fought. The mechanism differs from the perfume commercial, but the function is identical: the female body remains the site over which the larger meanings contend, whether the system wants to contain it or claims to liberate it. Bernays did not invent the structure. He put it to work.

Once a woman had been reduced to her body in religious and mythic discourse, that body became tradable on the market. The shift from woman is a danger that must be concealed to woman is a commodity that must be displayed is not a reversal but a continuation. Advertising works by the logic of sin and redemption before it works by the logic of visual appeal: the product is offered as salvation from a lack, and the female body is the symbolic guarantor of that promise. In commercials for perfumes and luxury cars and resorts, the woman is not selling the product; she is selling a promise of forbidden experience made available. The church promised salvation in the hereafter; advertising promises it now, in a bottle of perfume. Modernity did not liberate the female body. It commodified it, and moved it from the altar of sin to the shop window.

Global capitalism did not invent this commodification out of nothing. The female body was ready for commodification because the old mythic structure had already turned it into a sign — of danger, of desire, of temptation, of everything that falls outside the control of the will.

And here the other pole returns, the one we began with. Advertising does not only demonize the body; it sanctifies it in the same breath. The woman who strips off the gold and the diamonds says that what she adores is what is real — and then the name of the perfume arrives to take the place of that real thing, a name built on a verb that in French carries both longing and worship. She is presented as worshipper and worshipped at once, as temptation and as altar. The dialectic that Eve and Mary carried, that Shakti and Kali carried, did not break when it left the temple. It moved to the shop window with both its poles intact, because the need that produced it has not changed: the need for a creature to be desired and feared, raised above the man and kept beneath his hand. Sanctity and demonization are not opposed judgments upon a woman. They are two forms of a single function: keeping her a symbol rather than a person.

When a woman today uses her body to gain power — through allure, through visibility, through erotic capital — she is not inventing a new strategy. She is working inside the structure that preceded her. The system grants her that particular option precisely because it does not threaten the basic equation, in which her value still lies in her body.

The question she is always asked — what are you doing with your body? — is itself the frame that confines her.

The question assumes the body is the issue. And that assumption is the structure.

The way out lies neither in denying the body nor in glorifying it, but in stripping it of its monopoly on meaning. So long as the female body remains a sign — of sin or of salvation, of danger or of worth — a woman will remain a medium between forces larger than herself rather than an agent in her own right.

But that stripping does not happen one person at a time. A symbolic structure is not adopted or refused by an individual. It is a system produced jointly by language, by schooling, by the economy, by everything that reaches us before we have chosen anything. The myth did not last thousands of years because people failed to recognize it as a myth. It lasted because it served a real structure of power. Dismantling it begins where it repeats itself daily: in children’s books that reduce a girl to her prettiness; in a content industry that rewards visibility and punishes thought; in language itself, when it ties virtue to chastity and vice to desire, and so reproduces the equation in every sentence we speak.

The question, then, is not why cultures linked women with the devil. The question is why we go on reproducing that link — sometimes in the language of the market, sometimes in the language of liberation itself — despite everything we claim about having left it behind.

السؤال الذي يُطرح عادةً هو لماذا تقترن المرأة بالشيطان في كل الثقافات تقريبًا. السؤال نفسه محمَّل بما يتجاوز قدرته على الإثبات. الثقافات لم تشيطن المرأة فحسب، بل ألّهتها أيضًا، وكثيرًا ما فعلت الاثنين معًا. شاكتي وكالي، حواء ومريم، عشتار وليليث، الأم العذراء والزانية. القداسة والشيطنة قطبان لجدلية واحدة: تُرفع المرأة فوق البشر أو تُقرن بالشيطان، وفي الحالين تُنتزع منها إنسانيتها. والظاهرة الجديرة بالتفسير هي هذه الجدلية.

ومع ذلك، يحتل القطب الشيطاني موقعًا خاصًا في التقليد الإبراهيمي والغربي. حواء التي أغوت آدم في القراءة المسيحية، ليليث رفيقة الشياطين، ساحرات أوروبا اللواتي يتعاقدن مع إبليس، جسد المرأة اليوم وهو يبيعك سيارة وعطرًا ورحلة طيران. من حواء الساقطة إلى ثيرون في إعلان العطر ٢٠٠٠ عام، والوظيفة هي ذاتها لم تتغير: امرأة تقف بين رجل ورغبة محرّمة، ثم يُحمَّل جسدها وزر ما يفعله الرجل. على أنّ القرآن لا يحمّل حواء وحدها هذا الوزر، إذ أغوى إبليس الاثنين معًا، بل أفرد آدم بالعصيان. ومع ذلك نشأ في التقليد الإسلامي خطاب الفتنة كاملًا، من خلقها من الضلع الأعوج إلى جعل صوتها عورة وظهورها بابًا من أبواب الإغواء. صاغه المفسّرون والرواة، ولم ينزل به النصّ القرآني. فالبنية أقوى من النصّ الديني، لا تنتظر تفويضًا منه.

ويبقى السؤال: لماذا اختارت هذه الثقافات تحديدًا أن تحمّل المرأة هذه الحمولة الرمزية، وما الذي يجعل الشيطنة تتجدد في كل مرة بصيغة جديدة؟

التفسير السائد يشير إلى السيطرة الذكورية، فالرجل يخشى سطوة المرأة عليه فيشيطنها. والتفسير المادي يضيف أن الأسطورة غطاء لضرورة السيطرة على الرحم والنسب. كلا التفسيرين يصف آليات حقيقية، لكنهما يقفان على مشارف السؤال الجوهري، وهو لماذا اتخذت السيطرة الذكورية على المرأة شكل الشيطنة بالذات. فالسلطة تُمارَس بألف طريقة، منها الاستعباد والإقصاء والتجاهل. لكنّ ما جرى للمرأة غير هذا، فهي لم تُعامَل ككائن أدنى فحسب، بل حُمّلت قوة رمزية هائلة، هي قوة الإغواء وقوة الإسقاط وقوة أن تُهوي بالرجل من علياء طهارته إلى حضيض خطيئته. العبد في بعض الثقافات شُيطن هو الآخر، إذ ربطه الخطاب العنصري بالحيوانية والشبق الجنسي المنفلت، لكن شيطنته خدمت الإقصاء والعنف، بينما شيطنة المرأة خدمت الاحتواء، أي إبقاء اللجام حول عنقها مرخيًا، فتبقى قريبة وخاضعة في الآن نفسه. وما جرى لساحرات أوروبا في القرن السابع عشر على الهامش من إحراقٍ وطرد لم ينقض هذا الاحتواء، إنما خدمه، فالعنف الممارَس علنًا على قلّة من النساء إنذارٌ يُبقي سائرهنّ قريباتٍ خاضعات. هذا الفرق الوظيفي هو ما لا يفسره الإخضاع وحده.

وما يُطرح هنا ليس بديلًا عن التفسيرين، تفسير السيطرة وتفسير النسب، إنما جوابٌ عمّا سكتا عنه، فالشيطنة حلٌّ رمزي لتناقض بنيوي. الرجل يحتاج المرأة (للتكاثر، للرغبة، للاستمرار)، لكنه لا يستطيع السيطرة عليها سيطرة كاملة دون تدمير هذه الحاجة ذاتها. صحيح أن أنظمة كثيرة قنّنت استعباد المرأة المرغوبة، من السبي إلى التسرّي إلى الحريم. لكن هذا الاستعباد ظل ممكنًا حيث رسمت الأيديولوجيا حدًا قاطعًا بين فئات النساء، فالحرّة في موقع، والجارية أو السبيّة في موقع آخر. والتناقض المقصود لا يظهر إلا حين تعترف الثقافة بالمرأة شريكةً روحية للرجل في الإطار العام. وعندها تستحيل السيطرة الكاملة دون أن تخسر الرغبةُ ذاتها قيمتها، فالمرأة التي تُسلَب إرادتها تُفرَغ بالضرورة من جاذبيتها. ما قالته سيمون دو بوفوار في «الجنس الآخر» قريب من هذا: الإنسانية ذكورية الصياغة، والرجل يعرّف المرأة لا كذات مستقلة بل كنسبة إليه، آخَرَ يحتاجه ليثبت ذاته. لكن هذا «الآخَر» لا يكتمل تحويله إلى موضوع أبدًا. المرأة يجب أن تكون مرغوبة وخاضعة، قريبة وخطرة، ضرورية ومهددة. هذا التناقض لا يُحَلّ ماديًا. يحتاج إلى أسطورة.

تبدأ الأسطورة بتحويل ضعف الرجل إلى خطر في المرأة، ثم استخدام هذا الخطر لتبرير السيطرة عليها. حين تُقرن المرأة بالشيطان، يصبح عجز الرجل عن مقاومتها مفهومًا، فالعجز لم يعد ضعفًا فيه، وصار قوة خبيثة فيها. فالشيطان لا يعمل بالقوة الغاشمة، إنما بالإغواء، والإغواء يتطلب رغبة مسبقة في المُغوى.

وهكذا تنقلب المعادلة، فالرجل لا يعترف بشهوته، ويُسقطها على المرأة كقدرة شيطانية.

ما لا يطيق المرء أن يراه في نفسه، يَسهُل عليه أن يراه في امرأة.

ثم يأتي التبرير الأخطر، وهو الحماية. نحن لا نسيطر عليكِ لمصلحتنا، إنما نحميكِ من الخطر الذي تحملينه دون إرادتك. هكذا تتحول السيطرة إلى رعاية، والسجن إلى حماية، والإذلال إلى تقوى. والسقوط يطلب دائمًا من يُلام عليه، فلا يمكن إلقاء اللوم على الله لأن ذلك يهدم البنية الدينية، ولا على الرجل لأن ذلك يناقض مركزيته. ولا بدّ لكل سقوط من حواء تأكل التفاحة.

ثم تختزل المرأة في جسدها، فهو مصدر الخطر على نظام الرجل. فالنظام الأبوي لا يرى في عقلها ولا في روحها ما يراه في جسدها من ضرورة، فيصير الجسد ساحة الصراع. فيه يفقد الرجل سيطرته على نفسه حين تغلبه الرغبة، ويفقد اطمئنانه إلى نسله حين يخالجه الشك في أبوته لأولاده، ويفقد استقرار نظامه حين يلوح احتمال الفوضى الجنسية. ومن هنا تلك الطقوس المعقدة، فالتغطية لترويض الجسد، والعزل لقطع صلته بمصادر قوته، وقوانين الطهارة والنجاسة لتذكيره بأنه كيان يحتاج إلى ضبط مستمر. لاحظت الأنثروبولوجية ماري دوغلاس في كتابها «الطهارة والخطر» (١٩٦٦) أن كل ما يهدد الحدود بين المقولات الاجتماعية (طاهر ونجس، داخل وخارج، مقدس ومدنّس) يُعامَل خطرًا يحتاج إلى طقس لاحتوائه. وجسد المرأة، بما يعتريه من حيض وحمل وإرضاع، هو التهديد الأول لكل هذه الحدود.

ثم جاءت الحداثة: لم تحرر المرأة من هذا الربط، أعادت صياغته

الإعلان التجاري يستخدم الجسد الأنثوي بالمنطق ذاته الذي استخدمته الأسطورة. الجسد يغوي، والإغواء يولّد رغبة، والرغبة تقود إلى فعل هو الشراء، والفعل يؤدي إلى سقوط، فالمديونية والاستهلاك القهري وتدمير الذات الاقتصادية. الفارق أن النظام القديم كان يحذّرك من سقوطٍ أخروي، بينما النظام الحديث يَعِدك بخلاصٍ دنيوي. الشيطان الديني يقول لك اسقط معي وستخسر الجنة، والشيطان الاستهلاكي يقول لك اسقط معي وستدخل جنة الجمال والشباب والمكانة.

ولمعترضٍ أن يقول إن الرأسمالية تُسلِّع الجسد الذكوري كذلك، في الساعات والسيارات وأبطال الشاشة. صحيح.

لكن المنتج هناك يَعِد الرجل بأن يصير ذلك الجسد، لا أن يمتلكه.

يُوعد الرجل بأن يصير شيئًا أفضل، وتُوعد المرأة بأن تكون شيئًا يملكه غيرها. وهذا يكشف بنية رمزية أعمق، ورثتها الرأسمالية ولم تخلقها.

هذا ليس تشبيهًا بلاغيًا. صناعة الإعلان بُنيت، بوعي أحيانًا وبحدس أحيانًا أخرى، على استثمار الشحنة الرمزية التي حملها الجسد الأنثوي عبر آلاف السنين. حملة إدوارد بيرنيز عام ١٩٢٩ تكشف الآلية من زاوية مختلفة. فبيرنيز، أبو العلاقات العامة الحديثة وابن أخت فرويد، أراد إقناع النساء بالتدخين علنًا، فاستشار الطبيب النفسي أ. أ. بريل، فأخبره أن السيجارة بالنسبة للمرأة رمز قضيبي وأن التدخين فعل تحرر. فسمّى حملته لصالح Lucky Strike «مشاعل الحرية»، وأرسل عارضات أنيقات يُدخّنّ في شوارع نيويورك يوم عيد الفصح. والجسد الأنثوي هنا ليس أداةً لبيع منتج للرجل، إنما ميدان رمزي تُخاض فيه معركة الحرية ذاتها. الآلية مغايرة لإعلان العطر، لكن الوظيفة واحدة: الجسد الأنثوي يبقى الموضع الذي تتنازع عليه المعاني الكبرى، سواء أراد النظام احتواءه أو زعم تحريره. بيرنيز لم يخترع البنية، وظّفها.

حين اختُزلت المرأة في جسدها في الخطاب الديني والأسطوري، أصبح هذا الجسد قابلًا للتداول في السوق. والانتقال من «المرأة خطر يجب حجبه» إلى «المرأة سلعة يجب عرضها» ليس انقلابًا، إنما امتداد لها. والإعلان يشتغل بمنطق الخطيئة والفداء فوق منطق الجاذبية البصرية، فالمنتج يُقدَّم كخلاص من نقص، والجسد الأنثوي هو الضامن الرمزي لهذا الوعد. وفي إعلانات العطور والسيارات الفارهة والمنتجعات، المرأة لا تبيع المنتج، تبيع وعدًا بتجربة محرّمة صارت متاحة. الكنيسة كانت تَعِد بالخلاص في الآخرة، والإعلان يَعِد به الآن، في زجاجة عطر. فالحداثة لم تحرر الجسد الأنثوي، إنما سلّعته، ونقلته من محراب الخطيئة إلى واجهة العرض.

والعولمة الرأسمالية لم تخترع هذا التسليع من فراغ. الجسد الأنثوي كان جاهزًا للتسليع لأن البنية الأسطورية القديمة كانت قد حولته فعلًا إلى علامة على الخطر والرغبة والإغواء، وعلى كل ما يقع خارج سيطرة الإرادة.

وهنا يعود القطب الآخر الذي بدأنا به. فالإعلان لا يشيطن الجسد وحده، يقدّسه في اللحظة نفسها. المرأة التي تنزع الذهب والألماس تقول إنها تهوى ما هو حقيقي، ثم يأتي اسم العطر ليحلّ محلّ ذلك الحقيقي — وهو اسم مبنيّ على فعلٍ يحمل في الفرنسية الهوى والعبادة معًا. فتُقدَّم عابدةً ومعبودة في آن، فتنةً ومحرابًا. والجدلية التي حملتها حواء ومريم، وشاكتي وكالي، لم تنكسر حين خرجت من المعبد؛ انتقلت إلى واجهة العرض بقطبيها معًا، لأن الحاجة التي أنتجتها لم تتغير: الحاجة إلى كائن يُشتهى ويُخاف، يُرفع فوق الرجل ويبقى تحت يده. فالقداسة والشيطنة ليستا حكمين متعارضين على المرأة، بل صيغتان لوظيفة واحدة، وهي أن تبقى رمزًا لا شخصًا.

حين تستخدم المرأة جسدها اليوم للحصول على القوة، بالإغراء والظهور ورأس المال الجنسي، فهي لا تخترع استراتيجية جديدة، بل تعمل داخل البنية التي سبقتها.

النظام يتيح لها هذا الخيار تحديدًا لأنه لا يهدد المعادلة الأساسية، فقيمة المرأة عنده في جسدها.

السؤال الذي يُطرح عليها دائمًا (ماذا تفعلين بجسدك؟) هو نفسه الإطار الذي يحبسها. فالسؤال يفترض أن الجسد هو القضية. وهذا الافتراض هو البنية.

والخروج لا يكون بإنكار الجسد ولا بتمجيده، إنما بأن يُنزع عنه احتكار المعنى. طالما ظل الجسد الأنثوي علامةً على الخطيئة أو الخلاص، وعلى الخطر أو القيمة، ستبقى المرأة وسيطًا بين قوى أكبر منها، لا فاعلًا مستقلًا.

لكن هذا النزع لا يحدث فرديًا. البنية الرمزية لا يتبناها فرد ولا يرفضها فرد. إنها نظام تشترك في إنتاجه اللغة والمدرسة والاقتصاد، وكل ما يصلنا قبل أن نختار. الأسطورة لم تستمر آلاف السنين لأن الناس لم يعرفوا أنها أسطورة، استمرت لأنها كانت تخدم بنية قوة حقيقية. تفكيكها يبدأ من المواضع التي تتكرر فيها يوميًا: من كتب الأطفال التي تختزل الفتاة في الجمال، إلى صناعة المحتوى التي تكافئ الظهور وتعاقب الفكر، إلى اللغة ذاتها حين تربط الفضيلة بالعفة والرذيلة بالرغبة، فتُعيد إنتاج المعادلة في كل جملة نقولها.

السؤال إذن ليس لماذا ربطت الثقافات بين المرأة والشيطان. السؤال هو لماذا لا نزال نعيد إنتاج هذا الربط، بلغة السوق أحيانًا وبلغة التحرر ذاته أحيانًا، رغم كل ادعاءاتنا بأننا تجاوزناه؟

For David Bohm (1917–1992), physicist and philosopher, thought is not a problem awaiting a solution. It is a paradox, and a paradox has to be watched while it works. Thought can construct the very frame that makes an error look self-evident: it decides what we think about, it helps shape the way we see the world, and then it forgets that it had a hand in that shaping. The unthought is the name I will give here to the territory Bohm’s work opens up — the movement of thought as it works through us before we become aware of it.

What Thinks Through Us Before We Think of It

When a person becomes identified with the horizon of his culture, the question may fail him before the answer does. This is no defect of intelligence. A culture is a field of meaning that constitutes the very instruments of perception; it is far more than a bundle of opinions carried in from outside. Something for which a culture has no concept does not merely look unknown — it can look as though it does not exist at all. Thought helps shape how we see before it tells us what we see.

In Wholeness and the Implicate Order, Bohm traces fragmentation to a general image of the world that seeps into the life of the individual and of society, and into science, language, and politics; something deeper than a theoretical error a better fact could correct. Worse: a person acting on a fragmented view produces a fragmented world, and then takes that world as evidence for the view that produced it. A society builds its institutions on competition, looks at the human beings those institutions have made, and concludes that man is competitive by nature. Thought manufactures the division, then stands before it, contemplating it as a reality independent of itself.

Thought Is Not a Tool

In Thought as a System, Bohm presents thought as a system. We tend to imagine that there is first a central “I,” prior to thought, which uses thought the way it uses a pen. Bohm inverts the picture: thought is a total movement in which memory is interwoven with emotion, the body with language, assumptions with the self-image, individual experience with social reality — a movement that does not reflect reality the way a mirror does, but enters into the making of what we experience as real.

A man feels insulted the instant he hears a particular word, and the insult seems to him to reside in the word itself, an objective property of it. Had he examined what happened, he would have found whole strata preceding his reaction: a memory, a self-image, a social meaning attached to the word, a fear of losing standing, perhaps an old history no longer present to his awareness.

Thought moved first. Consciousness arrived late, to say: he insulted me.

And there is something more serious than holding mistaken ideas: being captive to a system of thought one cannot see at work — a system that built, from the outset, the frame that makes the judgment look natural.

When Culture Inhabits Us

The man identified with his culture is the general case here, not a lesser one. He does not inhabit his culture the way he inhabits a house; his culture inhabits the machinery of his perception. Which is why it may never occur to him to ask: why do I want what I want? Why do I fear what I fear? Success, as he understands it, is a respected job, a good income, a standing others can see; and reputation, identity, and belonging are first truths that stand in no need of examination.

A man wants success. He asks: how do I get there? He plans, he works, he measures himself against others, he grieves when he stumbles or falls behind. But he may never ask:

Where did the definition of success he has spent his life serving come from?

For him, success is not an idea about success. It is success itself.

Such are the implicit assumptions: they present themselves as the ground of the world before they present themselves as assumptions one might accept or refuse. An idea we know to be a product of thought is one we can argue with; an idea that appears in the guise of reality itself leaves us unaware that there is anything to argue about.

The unthought, then, is what has already determined the shape of the thinking available to us. What we do not see is the frame, because we are looking through it.

Who Is Thinking?

The question grows harsher when the thinker himself enters the picture. In Bohm’s dialogues with Krishnamurti on the limits of thought, the mechanical process begins without announcing itself as mechanical: thought produces a response, and the response then appears as direct perception of reality. What escapes notice is that the “frame” is itself accumulated thought that has taken on the appearance of truth.

The unthought, in this sense, is what thinks through us. Culture is not carried the way a suitcase is carried; it moves in us as language, as nervous response, as a feeling of the obvious, as disgust and loyalty and shame. The radical question shifts from what do you think? to: what is the movement that produced the question and the answer together, and then produced the sense that the answer is mine? At this point the self enters the circle of the unthought.

In those dialogues the most radical claim takes shape: thought creates a psychological center, and then attributes to that center the qualities of thinker, perceiver, sufferer. “I think” is, in truth, an inverted formulation: thought produces the image of an “I,” and then attributes the thinking to it. Once pain and desire and fear are attributed to this center, it comes to seem an independent entity standing behind the whole operation.

Is there, then, a thinker separate from thought?

For Bohm and Krishnamurti, the answer is stark: the thinker is the thought.

If the center we call “I” is already interwoven with memory, language, experience, and the social image of the self, the matter goes well beyond repairing a few of the ego’s ideas; what is required is to see the process that makes the ego appear prior to thought. Culture itself rests on that assumption: a self that chooses and believes and owns, that sins and repents, that competes and triumphs and is humiliated. To question “the thinker” is to touch that entire structure before touching any particular idea.

When Language Fragments the World

It is not culture and the self-image alone; language too carries a form of the unthought. The structure on which Bohm built his critique — the familiar subject–verb–object pattern of English and many other Indo-European languages — presents the world as independent things with actions and relations between them. It is a useful structure, but it also suggests that what we separate grammatically is necessarily separate in fact.

Take: the mind sees the world. In the sentence there is a mind here, a world there, and a process called seeing that connects them. But what if perception itself enters into the making of that separation, so that the “observer” is not standing outside what he observes to the degree the sentence implies? The separation of observer from observed then becomes part of the paradox — or rather, the illusion of that separation does.

In the chapter on the rheomode in the same book, Bohm proposes a linguistic mode that gives priority to movement and process instead of always beginning from fixed things to which actions are afterward attached. The wager is that language both describes our view of the world and trains it. When language keeps repeating the separation of agent from action, observer from observed, self from world, these divisions can harden from practical conventions into metaphysical assumptions. Bohm states the claim plainly: “The dominant form of subject-verb-object tends continually to lead to fragmentation.”¹

Arabic offers a way to test that wager. Its verbal sentence begins with the event and attaches the agent afterward, deferring the fixing of the agent rather than setting out from it — close to what Bohm was reaching for in his coinage, and without the artifice. Yet Arabic sets against its verbal sentence a nominal one that asserts and settles, along with a rich tradition of the noun and the verbal noun; it has its own share of thing-making. What matters more: this grammatical opening did not spare Arab culture. Conceptions of the world arose within it that rest on fixed substances visited by accidents; it reproduced the split between self and world, and the same fragmentation Bohm found in the languages he criticized. Grammar opens a possibility; it cannot realize that possibility on thought’s behalf — which is precisely Bohm’s own thesis: language trains perception, and cannot substitute for attention to the movement of thought.

Language works beneath the level of the sentence we utter; it helps determine what can appear sayable to us at all.

And in Foucault’s The Order of Things, the unthought (l’impensé) appears as man’s double rather than as a residue of incomplete knowledge awaiting completion: modern man is constituted as an object of knowledge alongside an unthought that accompanies him yet continually escapes possession. Both men strip the self of its position prior to what it thinks. The level of analysis differs, though: Foucault makes the unthought a structural condition in the formation of man within the conditions of modern knowledge, while Bohm tracks the movement itself where it occurs perceptibly — in thought as a psychological, linguistic, and social process, and in the body, in memory, in feeling.

Beyond Separate Things

Fragmentation in Bohm does not stop at the self and at language; there is a further layer, the implicate order as against the explicate order. In physics and philosophy alike, Bohm holds that things which appear separate in the explicate order may be manifestations of a deeper order that enfolds and unfolds, and that the separation appearing before us is not necessarily the last word on the structure of reality.

It is easy to misuse Bohm here: one need only say “everything is one” to turn his idea into a comfortable metaphysical consolation that all but cancels it. Harder than extracting a doctrine of cosmic unity is noticing that thought is itself disposed to produce the parts and then treat them as original independent units.

Fragmentation, then, does not occur in the world alone; it is also the manner in which thought has learned to see. Can thought see its own limits, then, without turning “seeing the limits” into one more idea it possesses — and can it notice fragmentation where it first occurs, in its own movement, before the movement of others and of society?

Dialogue: Watching the Assumption Move

Hence dialogue in Bohm’s sense: a space in which implicit assumptions rise to the surface while they are working, not a debate in which one opinion defeats another, and not a courteous exchange of positions held in advance.

Bohm’s distinction between problem and paradox does its work here: a problem calls for a solution, whereas a paradox has to be watched in its movement. “As long as a paradox is treated as a problem, it can never be dissolved.”² And when we treat it that way, thought may reproduce the very frame that generated it, so that the tangle tightens instead of loosening.

In On Dialogue and Thought as a System, the idea of suspension takes shape: holding an assumption up rather than rushing to defend it or be rid of it; seeing it present in the mind, and noticing its effect in the body, the emotions, the speech — neither resolving to stop believing it nor setting out to prove it, but leaving it visible.

When someone in a conversation says, “obviously human beings are selfish,” the immediate answer — true or false — matters less than what entered the sentence unannounced: what “human being” means in it, which experiences became the standard, which institutions produced the behavior it rests on, and what happens in the speaker himself when the assumption is challenged.

At that point the unthought becomes a collective movement of meaning appearing before us as it forms. In Unfolding Meaning, Bohm describes meaning as a living structure that extends and changes with perception and action. When the contradiction between our intentions and the results of our actions shows itself, the limit of the meaning we had been living inside is exposed; and what is needed then is a wider meaning, before it is more information.

For Thought to Sense Its Own Movement

A man supposes he is using thought. What if thought, in a great many moments, is using him?

The circle the question assumes is real enough: thought accumulated in a culture produces responses, the responses produce institutions, the institutions reproduce the thought that established them, and then the whole system looks natural because it has become present everywhere. From inside that system the question becomes how do I succeed in it? rather than is this culture sick?, and how do I fulfill my desire? rather than who planted this desire in me?

A person’s need to see the frame at work may therefore be greater than his need to know about it. Thought is indispensable in calculation, construction, planning, technology; the trouble begins when it exceeds its domain and then behaves as though it could see the whole from inside it.

Bohm’s answer is a direct perception of the movement of thought, which he called the proprioception of thought. Just as the body has a sense of the position and motion of its limbs without needing to look at them from outside each time, the question becomes: can thought acquire a sense of its own movement as it moves? Can the act of thought become felt in the moment of its occurrence, before it thinks about itself afterward or writes a new theory about its errors? Bohm confines the matter to direct seeing: “The important point is actually to see for yourself the proprioception of thought, to see it in action.”³

And this is seen only from within:

To see fear summoning a memory that confirms it.

To see the self-image reinterpreting a word said to me.

To see a cultural assumption turn, in an instant, into an obvious truth.

To see desire naming itself a choice.

In each of these moments thought works before it is seen, and institutions then return to it what it produced, now in the guise of reality. Liberation, if the word applies, does not begin with a new idea competing against the old ones; it begins when this movement itself becomes visible.

The unthought is not a storehouse of ideas we have yet to discover; were it that, more knowledge would suffice. It is what, beneath awareness, helps determine what will count as thinkable at all.

Can a person see the frame while he is working inside it, then, instead of living within its limits as though they were the limits of reality?

If something of that kind becomes possible, the unthought will not have become one more “object” we add to thought; thought itself will have begun to lose its oldest privilege:

to work through us without our seeing it.

الفكر، عند الفيزيائي والفيلسوف ديفيد بوهم (١٩١٧–١٩٩٢)، ليس مجرد مشكلة تنتظر حلًا؛ إنه مفارقة ينبغي أن تُرصد وهي تعمل. فالفكر يستطيع أن يصنع الإطار نفسه الذي يجعل الخطأ يبدو مسلَّمة: يحدّد ما نفكر فيه، ويشارك في تشكيل الطريقة التي نرى بها العالم، ثم ينسى أنه شارك في تشكيل هذه الرؤية. و«اللامفكَّر فيه» اسمٌ نطلقه هنا على المساحة التي تكشفها أفكار بوهم: حركة الفكر حين تعمل من خلالنا وفينا قبل أن نراها ماثلة أمامنا.

ما يفكّر فينا قبل أن نفكّر فيه

حين يتماهى الإنسان مع أفق ثقافته، قد تعوزه صيغة السؤال قبل أن يعوزه الجواب. وليس مردُّ ذلك إلى قصورٍ في العقل: فالثقافة حقلٌ للمعنى يكوّن أدوات الرؤية ذاتها، وهي أوسع من جملة آراء تُحمَل من الخارج. والشيء الذي لا مفهوم له في الثقافة لا يبدو مجهولًا فحسب، بل قد يبدو غير موجود من الأساس. فالفكر يشارك في صنع كيفية الرؤية قبل أن يقول لنا ما نراه.

في Wholeness and the Implicate Order (الكلّية والنظام المنطوي) يردّ بوهم التجزئة (fragmentation) إلى صورة عامة للعالم تتسرب إلى حياة الفرد والمجتمع، وإلى العلم واللغة والسياسة؛ وهي أعمق من مجرد خطأ نظريّ تصحّحه معلومة أدقّ. والأخطر أن الإنسان، حين يتصرف على مقتضى رؤية مجزّأة، ينتج عالمًا مجزّأً ثم يتخذه دليلًا على صحة الرؤية التي أنتجته. مجتمع يبني مؤسساته على المنافسة، مثلًا، ثم ينظر إلى البشر الذين صنعتهم هذه المؤسسات ويقول: الإنسان تنافسي بطبعه. الفكر يصنع التجزئة، ثم يقف أمامها متأملًا إياها بوصفها واقعًا مستقلًا عنه.

الفكر ليس أداة

وفي Thought as a System (الفكر بوصفه نظامًا) يعرض بوهم الفكر بوصفه نظامًا قائمًا بذاته. نميل عادة إلى تصور أن ثمة «أنا» مركزية سابقة على الفكر، تستعمل الفكر كما تستعمل قلمًا. ولكن بوهم يقلب الصورة فيرى أن الفكر حركة كلية تتشابك فيها الذاكرة بالعاطفة، والجسد باللغة، والافتراضات بصورة الذات، والتجربة الفردية بالواقع الاجتماعي؛ حركةٌ لا تعكس الواقع كما تعكسه مرآة، بل تدخل في تكوين ما يبدو لنا واقعًا.

شخصٌ يشعر بالإهانة فور سماع كلمة بعينها، فتبدو له الإهانة مقيمة في الكلمة نفسها، خاصيةً موضوعية فيها. لكنه لو فحص ما جرى لوجد طبقات كاملة سبقت ردّ فعله: ذاكرةً، وصورةً عن الذات، ومعنى اجتماعيًا للكلمة، وخوفًا من فقدان المكانة، وربما تاريخًا قديمًا لم يعد حاضرًا في وعيه.

الفكر تحرّك أولًا، ثم جاء الوعي متأخرًا ليقول: «لقد أهانني».

وثمة ما هو أدهى من أفكارٍ خاطئة يحملها المرء: أن يكون أسير نظام فكري لا يراه وهو يعمل؛ نظامٍ صنع، منذ البداية، الإطار الذي يجعل الحكم يبدو طبيعيًا.

حين تسكننا الثقافة

والإنسان المتماهي مع ثقافته يمثّل هنا الحالة العامّة. هو لا يسكن الثقافة كما يسكن بيتًا؛ بل إن الثقافة تسكن آلياته الإدراكية. ولذلك قد لا يخطر له أن يسأل: لماذا أريد ما أريد؟ لماذا أخاف مما أخاف؟ فالنجاح في عرفه وظيفة مرموقة ودخل مرتفع ومكانة يراها الآخرون، والسمعة والهوية والانتماء حقائق أولى (مسلَّمات) لا تحتاج هي نفسها إلى فحص.

رجل يريد النجاح. يسأل: كيف أصل إليه؟ يخطط، ويجتهد، ويقارن نفسه بغيره، ويحزن إذا تعثّر أو تأخّر. لكنه قد لا يسأل قط:

من أين جاء تعريف النجاح الذي أنفق حياته في خدمته؟

فالنجاح عنده ليس فكرة عن النجاح؛ إنه النجاح نفسه.

تلك هي الافتراضات الضمنية: تظهر لنا بوصفها أرضيةً للعالم قبل أن تظهر افتراضاتٍ يمكن قبولها أو رفضها. والفكرة التي نعرف أنها من صنع الفكر نستطيع مناقشتها؛ أما التي تظهر في هيئة الواقع نفسه فلا نعرف أصلًا أن ثمة شيئًا ينبغي مناقشته.

بهذا يصير اللامفكَّر فيه ما حدّد سلفًا شكل التفكير الممكن. ما لا نراه هو الإطار، إذ ننظر من خلاله.

من الذي يفكّر؟

يبلغ الأمر طبقة أشد قسوة حين يدخل المفكر نفسه في السؤال. في حوارات بوهم مع كريشنامورتي حول حدود الفكر، تبدأ العملية الفكرية الميكانيكية وهي لا تعلن عن نفسها بوصفها ميكانيكية: ينتج الفكر استجابة، ثم تظهر الاستجابة كأنها إدراك مباشر للواقع. وما يغيب عن الأعين أن «الإطار» نفسه فكر متراكم اتخذ هيئة الحقيقة.

اللامفكَّر فيه، بهذا المعنى، ما يفكّر من خلالنا. فالثقافة لا تُحمَل كما تُحمَل حقيبة؛ تتحرك فينا لغةً واستجابةً عصبية وحسًّا بالبداهة واشمئزازًا وولاءً وعارًا. ويتحول السؤال الجذري من «ما رأيك؟» إلى: ما الحركة التي أنتجت السؤال والجواب معًا، ثم أنتجت ذلك الشعور بأن الجواب «جوابي أنا»؟ وتدخل الذات نفسها، عند هذا الحد، في دائرة اللامفكَّر فيه.

وفي تلك الحوارات يتبلور أشدّ الطروحات جذريةً: الفكر يخلق مركزًا نفسيًا، ثم ينسب إليه صفة المفكر والمدرك والمتألم. و«أنا أفكر» صياغةٌ مقلوبة في حقيقة الأمر: الفكر ينتج صورة «أنا»، ثم ينسب التفكير إليها. وحين يُنسب الألم والرغبة والخوف إلى هذا المركز يغدو كأنه كيان مستقل يقف وراء العملية كلها.

فهل يوجد مفكّر منفصل عن الفكر؟

الجواب عند بوهم وكريشنامورتي: المفكّر هو الفكر (the thinker is the thought).

وإذا كان المركز الذي نسمّيه «أنا» مشتبكًا بالذاكرة واللغة والخبرة والصورة الاجتماعية للذات، فالمسألة أبعد من إصلاح بعض أفكار الأنا؛ المطلوب رؤية العملية التي تجعل الأنا تبدو سابقة على الفكر. والثقافة نفسها تنهض على هذا الافتراض: ذات تختار وتؤمن وتملك، تذنب وتتوب، تنافس وتنتصر وتُهان. ومساءلة «المفكر» تمسّ هذه البنية كلها قبل أن تمسّ أيّ فكرة بعينها.

حين تجزّئ اللغة العالم

لا يقتصر الأمر على الثقافة وصورة الذات؛ فاللغة نفسها تحمل شكلًا من أشكال اللامفكَّر فيه. والصيغة التي بنى بوهم نقده عليها — فاعلٌ ثم فعلٌ ثم مفعول، على ترتيب اللغات الهندوأوروبية — تقدّم العالم في هيئة أشياء مستقلة تقوم بينها أفعال وعلاقات. وهي بنية مفيدة، لكنها توحي بأن ما نفصله نحويًا منفصل في الواقع بالضرورة.

نقول مثلًا: «العقل يرى العالم». في الجملة عقلٌ هنا، وعالمٌ هناك، وعمليةٌ اسمها الرؤية تصل بينهما. لكن ماذا لو كانت عملية الإدراك نفسها داخلةً في تشكيل هذا الفصل، فلم يكن «الراصد» واقفًا خارج ما يرصده بالقدر الذي توحي به الجملة؟ عندئذ يصير انفصال الراصد عن المرصود جزءًا من المفارقة — أو بالأحرى: وهمُ هذا الانفصال.

وفي فصل «الرهيومود» من الكتاب نفسه يقترح بوهم نمطًا لغويًا (rheomode) يعطي الأولوية للحركة والعملية بدل أن يبدأ دائمًا من أشياء ثابتة تُلحق بها الأفعال. والرهان أن اللغة تصف رؤيتنا للعالم وتدرّبها معًا. وحين تكرر اللغة فصل الفاعل عن الفعل، والراصد عن المرصود، والذات عن العالم، تتحول هذه التقسيمات من أدوات عملية إلى بداهات ميتافيزيقية لا نعود نراها بوصفها تقسيمات. وفي هذا الفصل يُجمل بوهم دعواه: «تنزع الصيغة السائدة، صيغة الفاعل والفعل والمفعول، باطّراد إلى التجزئة.»¹

ولنا في اللغة العربية ما يختبر هذا الرهان. فجملتها الفعلية تبدأ بالحدث ثم تُلحق به فاعله، فتؤخّر تثبيت الفاعل بدل أن تنطلق منه، وهو قريبٌ ممّا التمسه بوهم في نحته اللغوي، من غير اصطناع. غير أن العربية تقابل فعليّتها باسميّةٍ تقرّر وترسي، وبتقليد مصدريّ واسميّ غنيّ؛ فلها من التشييء نصيبها. والأهمّ أن هذا الإمكان النحويّ لم يعصم الثقافة العربية: نهضت فيها تصوّرات للعالم على جواهر ثابتة تعتورها أعراض، وأعادت إنتاج الانقسام بين ذاتٍ وعالم، والتجزئة نفسها التي وجدها بوهم في اللغات التي انتقدها. النحو يفتح إمكانًا، ولا يستوفيه أحدٌ نيابةً عن الفكر؛ وهذا من صميم أطروحة بوهم نفسها:

اللغة تدرّب الرؤية، ولا تقوم مقام الانتباه إليها.

تعمل اللغة تحت مستوى العبارة التي نقولها؛ تسهم في تحديد ما يمكن أن يبدو لنا قابلًا للقول أصلًا.

وعند فوكو، في The Order of Things (الكلمات والأشياء)، يظهر اللامفكَّر فيه (l’impensé) قرينًا للإنسان لا بقيةً من معرفة ناقصة تنتظر الاستكمال: الإنسان الحديث يتكوّن موضوعًا للمعرفة، ويتكوّن معه في اللحظة نفسها ما يلازمه ولا يبلغه، فيظلّ محكومًا باسترداده أبدًا من غير أن يمتلكه. والرجلان معًا ينزعان عن الذات موقعها السابق على ما تفكّر فيه. غير أن مستوى التحليل يختلف: فوكو يجعل اللامفكَّر فيه شرطًا بنيويًا في تشكّل الإنسان داخل شروط المعرفة الحديثة، وبوهم يلاحق الحركة نفسها حيث تقع محسوسة — في الفكر بوصفه عملية نفسية ولغوية واجتماعية، وفي البدن والذاكرة والانفعال.

ما وراء الأشياء المنفصلة

مفهوم التجزئة عند بوهم لا يقف عند النفس واللغة؛ ثمة طبقة أبعد هي النظام المنطوي (implicate order) في مقابل النظام المنكشف (explicate order). في الفيزياء والفلسفة معًا، يرى بوهم أن الأشياء التي تبدو منفصلة في النظام المنكشف قد تكون تجلياتٍ لنظام أعمق ينطوي وينكشف، وأن الانفصال الذي يظهر أمامنا ليس بالضرورة الكلمة الأخيرة في بنية الواقع.

ومن السهل هنا إساءة استخدام بوهم: يكفي أن نقول «كل شيء واحد» حتى نحوّل فكرته إلى عزاء ميتافيزيقي مريح يكاد يبطلها. والأصعب من استخراج عقيدة عن «الوحدة الكونية» أن ننتبه إلى أن الفكر نفسه مهيأ لإنتاج الأجزاء ثم التعامل معها كأنها وحدات أصلية مستقلة.

التجزئة، إذن، لا تقع في العالم وحده؛ إنها أيضًا الكيفية التي تعلّم بها الفكر أن يرى. فهل يستطيع الفكر أن يرى حدوده من غير أن يحوّل «رؤية الحدود» نفسها إلى فكرة جديدة يمتلكها، وأن يلاحظ التجزئة حيث تقع أولًا: في حركته هو قبل حركة الآخرين والمجتمع؟

الحوار: أن نرى الافتراض وهو يتحرك

ومن هنا يأتي الحوار عند بوهم: فضاءٌ تصعد فيه الافتراضات المضمرة إلى السطح أثناء عملها، لا مناظرةً ينتصر فيها رأي على رأي، ولا تبادلًا مهذبًا لمواقف موجودة سلفًا.

وتفرقة بوهم بين المشكلة والمفارقة تعمل هنا: المشكلة تستدعي حلًا؛ أما المفارقة فتقتضي أن تُرصد أثناء حركتها. «ما دامت المفارقة تُعامَل معاملة المشكلة، فلن تنحلّ أبدًا.»² وحين نعاملها كذلك، قد يعيد الفكر إنتاج الإطار نفسه الذي ولّدها، فيزداد التشابك بدل أن ينحل.

وفي On Dialogue (في الحوار) و Thought as a System تتبلور فكرة التعليق (suspension): أن نعلّق الافتراض بدل أن نسارع إلى الدفاع عنه أو التخلص منه؛ أن نراه حاضرًا في الذهن، وأن نلاحظ أثره في الجسد والانفعال والكلام — لا أن نقرّر التوقف عن الاعتقاد به، ولا أن نبرهن على صحته، بل أن نتركه مرئيًا.

حين يقول أحدهم في حوار: «من الواضح أن البشر أنانيون»، فالجواب الفوري — صحيح أم خطأ — أقلّ شأنًا مما دخل إلى الجملة خِلسةً: معنى «الإنسان» فيها، والتجارب التي صارت معيارًا، والمؤسسات التي صنعت السلوك الذي استُند إليه، وما يحدث في المتحدث نفسه حين يُعارَض افتراضه.

عندئذ يصير اللامفكَّر فيه حركةً جماعية للمعنى تظهر أمامنا وهي تتكوّن. وفي Unfolding Meaning (انكشاف المعنى) يصف بوهم المعنى بنيةً حية تمتد وتتغير مع الإدراك والفعل. وحين يظهر التناقض بين نوايانا ونتائج أفعالنا، ينكشف حدّ المعنى الذي كنا نعيش داخله؛ فالحاجة عندئذ إلى معنًى أوسع قبل أن تكون إلى مزيد من المعلومات.

أن يشعر الفكر بذاته

يظن الإنسان أنه يستخدم الفكر. فماذا لو كان الفكر، في لحظات كثيرة، هو الذي يستخدمه؟

والدائرة التي يفترضها السؤال قائمةٌ فعلًا: الفكر المتراكم في الثقافة ينتج استجابات، والاستجابات تنتج مؤسسات، والمؤسسات تعيد إنتاج الفكر الذي أنشأها، ثم يبدو النظام كله طبيعيًا لأنه صار حاضرًا في كل مكان. ومن داخل هذا النظام يصير السؤال «كيف أنجح فيها؟» بدل «هل هذه الثقافة مريضة؟»، و«كيف أحقّق رغبتي؟» بدل «من زرع فيَّ هذه الرغبة؟»

ولهذا قد تكون حاجة الإنسان إلى رؤية الإطار وهو يعمل أشدَّ من حاجته إلى العلم به. والفكر ضروري في الحساب والبناء والتخطيط والتقنية؛ والخلل يبدأ حين يتجاوز مجاله، ثم يتصرف كأنه قادر على رؤية الكل من داخله.

وجواب بوهم إدراكٌ مباشر لحركة الفكر، سمّاه شعور الفكر بذاته (proprioception of thought). فكما يملك الجسد شعورًا بوضع أعضائه وحركتها بلا حاجة في كل مرة إلى النظر إليها من الخارج، يصير السؤال: هل يكتسب الفكر شعورًا بذاته وهو يتحرك؟ أن يصبح فعل الفكر محسوسًا في لحظة وقوعه، قبل أن يفكر في نفسه بعد انتهائه أو يكتب نظرية جديدة عن أخطائه. وبوهم يقصر الأمر على المعاينة: «المهمّ أن ترى بنفسك شعور الفكر بذاته، أن تراه وهو يعمل.»³

وهذا لا يُرى إلا من الداخل:

أن أرى الخوف وهو يستدعي ذكرى تؤكده.

أن أرى صورة الذات وهي تعيد تفسير كلمة قيلت لي.

أن أرى افتراضًا ثقافيًا يتحول في لحظة إلى «حقيقة بديهية».

أن أرى الرغبة وهي تسمي نفسها «اختيارًا».

وفي كل واحدة من هذه اللحظات يعمل الفكر قبل أن يُرى، ثم تعيد إليه المؤسسات ما أنتجه في هيئة واقع. والتحرر، إن صح التعبير، لا يبدأ بفكرة جديدة تنافس الأفكار القديمة؛ يبدأ حين تصبح هذه الحركة نفسها قابلة للرؤية.

اللامفكَّر فيه ليس مستودع الأفكار التي لم نكتشفها بعد؛ لو كان كذلك لكفانا المزيد من المعرفة. إنه ما يحدّد، من وراء الوعي، ما الذي سيبدو لنا أصلًا قابلًا للتفكير.

فهل يستطيع الإنسان أن يرى الإطار وهو يعمل فيه، بدلًا من أن يعيش داخل حدوده كأنها حدود الواقع نفسه؟

إن حدث شيء من ذلك، فلن يكون اللامفكَّر فيه قد صار «موضوعًا» جديدًا نضيفه إلى الفكر؛ يكون الفكر نفسه قد بدأ يفقد امتيازه الأقدم:

أن يعمل فينا من غير أن نراه.

Ask someone why they believe, or why they don’t, and the answer will almost always sound like the residue of a private life — a conviction arrived at alone, an experience lived through, a conclusion reached after long thought. The scientific study of religion asks a more unsettling question:

is that conviction really yours, or did your surroundings and the architecture of your brain settle the matter long before you got there?

When Hardship Makes Believers

A team of researchers, among them the religion scholar Joseph Bulbulia, surveyed 583 traditional societies worldwide and arrived at a striking finding: as resources grew scarcer and environmental risk rose, so did belief in a transcendent moral god — a god presiding over human affairs, watching, judging, intervening. Societies living close to the edge need a moral order that enforces itself even when no human eye is watching, and a transcendent god performs that office more efficiently than any human arrangement can.

The intuition is not new. Thinkers have observed for centuries that people remember God when the ways out have narrowed. What is new is systematic evidence across widely different cultures, which moves the observation out of the contemplative’s intuition and into the range of what can be tested.

The evidence has its limits. The category “moral god” in the ethnographic atlases is a coarse one, gathering wildly divergent conceptions under a single name, and a correlation between environment and belief settles nothing about which produced which. Did the hardness of life produce the presiding god — or were the societies that inherited such a god simply better equipped to survive under those conditions, so that they alone reached the researchers’ era while the rest vanished? The study measures the correlation; it does not explain it.

Still, the environmental account leaves a question hanging. What happens when the hardness lifts? Does belief lift with it, and does the inhabitant of comfort and safety turn out to be less moral? That is what Phil Zuckerman went looking into.

The Moral Unbeliever

Zuckerman began from a simple observation: the most prosperous and secure societies are the least religious — but are they the least moral? He studied irreligious families in Denmark and Sweden: how they raise their children, how they meet death and hardship, and what grounds their values. What he found was a coherent moral life standing on its own, one that does not wait for a transcendent overseer to enforce it and does not complain of his absence.

The result was not an attack on religion; it was a question. Where do morals come from when the presiding god is gone? Are they deeper than religion, or was religion always the vessel rather than the substance? Zuckerman decided the question deserved an institution, and founded at Pitzer College in California the first department of secular studies in the United States.

What If Religion Is in the Brain to Begin With?

Here a rival explanation challenges the environmental one at its foundation. If the human mind is disposed toward religion from the outset, then environment no longer explains belief itself; it explains only which god gets imagined — an overseer who judges, or one indifferent to human affairs.

Robert McCauley argues in Why Religion Is Natural and Science Is Not that the mind absorbs religious conceptions more readily than it absorbs scientific reasoning, because religion addresses intuition directly — patterns, intentions, relations — whereas science deliberately demands that we resist that intuition and revise it. Religiosity requires no organized instruction because it moves with the current of the mind; science moves against it.

Justin Barrett, in Born Believers, records the evidence for this. Children, very early and before any organized religious upbringing, incline naturally toward positing a higher being — one that acts by intention and purpose, not by mechanism. When a child sees a natural event, he looks instinctively for who did it, not for how it happened. The agent comes before the mechanism; that is how the mind is built, not how it is taught.

The Longing When It Is Blocked

Ara Norenzayan, in Big Gods, goes deeper still: what people want most is release from suffering, and something in their psychological makeup pulls them toward what lies beyond nature. When a secular upbringing blocks that direction from consciousness, the longing is not blocked with it; it finds another way out.

The nearest evidence comes from Northern Europe itself. The Danes and Swedes Zuckerman studied did not declare themselves atheists and did not leave their churches: they were baptized, many married in them, and they went on calling themselves Christians while denying most of the doctrine. They gave up the content and kept the form. And a large Danish survey found that two-thirds of its participants hold no religious belief, that belief in spirits, angels, and telepathy persists among them nonetheless, and that years of education barely move it. What remains is not religion, but an innate disposition that secularization cannot erase, only restrain.

Claims about that disposition need a limit, though. A thesis that finds religion in everything people do says nothing about religion: not every search for meaning is a religion in disguise. The limit is that the search must do what religion does — tell its adherent that there is an order behind events rather than chance, that there is a power that can be addressed and appealed to, that there is release from suffering in it. Astrology promises all of this; love of a football club promises none of it.

And the first question remains. The most dangerous thing a reader can be drawn into here is the assumption that once a belief has a cause, the choice behind it dissolves. That is a leap. All our ideas have causes preceding them, and if causes annulled our choosing, disbelief would fall along with belief, and this essay with both of them. Environment and brain show where the disposition comes from; resisting it is another matter. What these studies establish, at most, is that our starting point is not neutral — that what we take for pure reasoning is often assent to what we were already disposed to accept.

So perhaps the question worth asking is not “do you believe?” but “what does the person who thinks he believes in nothing believe in?”

حين تسأل شخصًا عن سبب إيمانه أو عدمه، غالبًا ما يأتيك جوابٌ يبدو مبنيًّا على تجربة شخصية خالصة — قناعة توصّل إليها بنفسه، أو تجربة مرّ بها، أو استنتاج بلغه بعد تأمّل. لكنّ علم الأديان يطرح سؤالًا أشدّ إقلاقًا:

هل هذه القناعة «قناعتك» فعلًا، أم أنّ بيئتك وتركيبة دماغك قرّرتا ذلك قبلك بوقت طويل؟

حين تُنتج قساوة الحياة إيمانًا

أجرى فريق من الباحثين، بينهم عالم الأديان جوزيف بولبوليا، مسحًا واسعًا شمل ٥٨٣ مجتمعًا تقليديًّا حول العالم، وانتهى إلى نتيجةٍ ملفتة: كلّما اشتدّت ندرة الموارد وتصاعدت المخاطر البيئية، ارتفع شيوع الإيمان بالإله الأخلاقيّ المتعالي — الإله المهيمن على شؤون المخلوقات الذي يراقب ويحاسب ويتدخّل. فالمجتمعات التي تعيش على حافة الخطر تحتاج نظامًا أخلاقيًّا يفرض نفسه حتى حين تغيب الرقابة البشرية، والإله المتعالي يؤدّي هذه الوظيفة بكفاءة لا يضاهيها نظام بشريّ.

والفكرة ليست جديدة تمامًا؛ فقد لاحظ المفكّرون منذ القدم أنّ الإنسان يتذكّر ربّه حين تضيق به السبل. الجديد شاهدٌ تجريبيّ ممنهج عبر ثقافات متباينة، ينقل الملاحظة الفلسفية من حدس المتأمّل إلى ما يقبل الفحص.

وللشاهد حدوده. فتصنيف «الإله الأخلاقيّ» في الأطالس الإثنوغرافية فضفاض يجمع تحت اسم واحد تصوّرات شديدة التباين، والتلازم بين البيئة والاعتقاد لا يحسم اتّجاه السببية: هل أنتجت قساوة الحياة الإله المهيمن، أم أنّ المجتمعات التي ورثت هذا الإله كانت أقدر على البقاء في مثل هذه الظروف، فوصلت وحدها إلى زمن الباحثين واندثر سواها؟ الدراسة تقيس الاقتران ولا تفسّره.

على أنّ التفسير البيئيّ يخلّف سؤالًا معلّقًا: ماذا يحدث حين تزول قساوة الحياة؟ هل يزول معها الإيمان، ويصير إنسان الرخاء والأمان أقلّ أخلاقًا؟ وهذا ما ذهب فيل زوكرمان يبحث فيه.

اللاديني الأخلاقي

انطلق زوكرمان من ملاحظة بسيطة: المجتمعات الأكثر رخاءً وأمانًا أقلّ تديّنًا — فهل هي أقلّ أخلاقًا؟ ودرس الأسر غير المتديّنة في الدنمارك والسويد: كيف تربّي أبناءها، وكيف تواجه الموت والشدائد، وعلى أيّ أساس تقوم قيمها. فوجد حياةً أخلاقية متماسكة قائمة بذاتها، لا تنتظر رقيبًا متعاليًا يفرضها، ولا تشكو من غيابه.

ولم تكن النتيجة هجومًا على الدين؛ كانت سؤالًا: من أين تأتي الأخلاق إذا غاب الإله المهيمن؟ هل هي أعمق من الدين، أم كان الدين وعاءها لا جوهرها؟ ورأى زوكرمان أنّ السؤال يستحقّ مؤسسة، فأسّس في كلّية بيتزر بكاليفورنيا أوّل قسم للدراسات العلمانية في الولايات المتحدة.

ماذا لو كان الدين في الدماغ أصلًا؟

وهنا يعترض تفسيرٌ آخر على التفسير البيئيّ من أساسه. فإن كان العقل البشريّ مهيّأً للدين ابتداءً، لم تعد البيئة تفسّر الإيمان نفسه، وإنما تفسّر صورة الإله الذي يُتخيَّل: مراقبٌ محاسب، أم غافلٌ عن شؤون البشر.

يرى روبرت ماكولي في «لماذا الدين طبيعي والعلم ليس كذلك» أنّ العقل يستوعب التصوّرات الدينية أيسر ممّا يستوعب المنطق العلمي، لأنّ الدين يخاطب الحدس الفطريّ مباشرةً — الأنماط والنوايا والعلاقات — بينما يطلب العلم عمدًا مقاومة هذا الحدس ومراجعته. التديّن لا يحتاج تعليمًا منظّمًا لأنه يسير مع تيّار الدماغ، والعلم يسير عكسه.

ويرصد جاستن باريت في «مؤمنون منذ الولادة» شاهدًا على ذلك: الأطفال، في مراحل مبكّرة وقبل أيّ تنشئة دينية منظّمة، يميلون فطريًّا إلى افتراض كيانٍ أعلى، فاعلٍ عن نيّة وقصد لا عن آلية. حين يرى الطفل ظاهرة طبيعية، يبحث تلقائيًّا عمّن فعلها، لا عن كيف حدثت. فالفاعل يسبق الآلية، وهذه هندسة لا تعليم.

الشوق حين يُحجب

ويذهب آرا نورنزايان في «الآلهة الكبرى» إلى ما هو أعمق: أشدّ ما يطلبه الناس الخلاص من المعاناة، وفي تركيبهم النفسيّ ما يشدّهم إلى المفارق للطبيعة. فإذا حُجبت هذه الوجهة عن الوعي بفعل تربية علمانية، لم يُحجب معها الشوق، والتمس لنفسه مخرجًا آخر.

والشاهد الأقرب من الشمال الأوروبيّ نفسه. فالدنماركيون والسويديون الذين درسهم زوكرمان لم يُعلنوا إلحادًا ولم يخرجوا من كنائسهم: عُمِّدوا، وتزوّج كثيرون منهم فيها، وظلّوا يسمّون أنفسهم مسيحيين وإن أنكروا أكثر تعاليمها. تخلّوا عن المضمون واحتفظوا بالشكل. وأظهر مسحٌ دنماركيّ واسع أنّ ثلثَي المشاركين فيه بلا اعتقاد دينيّ، وأنّ الإيمان بالأرواح والملائكة والتخاطر باقٍ فيهم على ذلك، وأنّ طول التعليم لا يكاد يزحزحه. فما بقي ليس دينًا، بل استعدادٌ فطريّ لا تمحوه العلمنة وإن كبحته.

لكنّ القول بهذا الاستعداد يحتاج حدًّا يقف عنده. فأطروحةٌ تجد الدين في كلّ ما يفعله الناس لا تقول شيئًا عن الدين: ليس كلّ بحثٍ عن المعنًى دينًا مقنّعًا. والحدّ أن يؤدّي هذا البحث ما يؤدّيه الدين: أن يقول لصاحبه إنّ وراء ما يجري نظامًا لا صدفة، وإنّ ثمّة قوّة يمكن أن تُخاطَب وتُستعطف، وإنّ في الأمر خلاصًا من المعاناة. الأبراج تَعِد بهذا كلّه؛ وحبّ فريقٍ رياضيّ لا يَعِد بشيء منه.

ويبقى السؤال الأوّل. وأخطر ما قد يُستدرَج إليه القارئ هنا أن يظنّ أنّ الاعتقاد متى وُجد له سببٌ بطل اختياره. وهذه قفزة منطقية: لأفكارنا كلّها أسبابٌ سابقة عليها، ولو أبطلت الأسبابُ اختيارنا لبطل مع الإيمان إنكارُه، ولسقط هذا المقال معهما. البيئة والدماغ يبيّنان منشأ هذا الاستعداد؛ أمّا مقاومته فشأن آخر. وغاية ما تقوله هذه الأبحاث أنّ منطلقنا ليس محايدًا، وأنّ ما نحسبه استنتاجًا خالصًا كثيرًا ما يكون تصديقًا لما كنّا مهيّئين لتصديقه.

فلعلّ السؤال الأجدر بالطرح ليس «هل تؤمن؟»، بل «بماذا يؤمن من يظنّ أنه لا يؤمن؟»

Emotional regulation has become a sacred skill in the workplace and in the self-help literature, a virtue no one disputes. Beneath the reverence sits an assumption few have looked at closely: that emotion is by nature a problem in need of domestication, and that the answer is always more control. It teaches you to treat your feelings as an internal enemy to be managed rather than as information reaching you about what is happening around you and inside you. Anger can be an exact response to a real injustice done to you; grief, the sign of a deep wound that has not healed; fear, an existential alarm at real danger. People drilled in emotional regulation until it runs in them involuntarily can miss all of these signals, because they silence the signal before they have understood what it says.

And regulation is prescribed as a remedy fit for every condition, whatever the situation it lands in. In the face of grave injustice, calm can be complicity rather than wisdom. In intimacy, suppressing your own fragility blocks real closeness instead of making room for it: closeness rests on some measure of exposure — showing yourself as you are, letting your defenses down. Under repression, too much composure can be surrender to a dark reality that has become ordinary, the frog in the boiling pot. The capacity to be angry at the right moment and to rebel when rebellion is called for is worth more than false composure; and calm itself can be a form of resistance rather than submission to a bleak reality. What works in one situation can be a disaster in another, and raising emotional regulation to the rank of sacred skill blurs the difference.

Many people confuse regulation with suppression. Much of what goes by the name of regulation is in fact a steady tamping down of uncomfortable feeling: people bury their anger or grief or fear under a mask of serenity without touching the root of the problem. That is not a skill but a defense mechanism, which postpones the problem instead of solving it. Regulation in its proper sense asks you to know your feelings in their detail, to listen to them well, to understand what those signals are saying, and then to choose how you respond — not to silence every heavy feeling on reflex. Much of what we take for information about the world is in fact information recorded in our memory: a thought stirs a feeling, the feeling stirs a thought that confirms it, and by the time it reaches us it has become a certainty about reality. To understand what your feeling really is means holding it in view until you can see it plainly — where it came from, why it came now, which thought preceded it and produced it — and anyone who has watched that loop between thought and feeling turning knows that suppression is not the only answer to a troubling feeling. Still, the signal does not always tell the truth. Anger can be the echo of an old wound more than a response to a present injustice, and fear can see a threat where there is none. Telling the true signal from the misleading one is emotional regulation in its most exact sense.

And treating emotional regulation as a solution at the level of individuals turns attention away from the conditions and the collective structures that produced those feelings. For people working in a toxic environment, or living under financial pressure that never lets up, or facing systemic discrimination, the problem is not their capacity for self-control but the conditions and the toxic structure they live inside. When the solution becomes “improving your emotional regulation skills,” the burden shifts to the individual, the structure is spared the question, and a structural failure is redescribed as a personal failure of emotional management. As though the only cure for an employee burning out at work were to sit cross-legged on a yoga mat and breathe deeply, rather than to demand conditions worthy of a human being. Their quiet is someone else’s gain, and no one pays for it. This is what drains the problem of its political dimension, turning attention from changing the conditions to improving the self.

صار ضبط المشاعر (emotional regulation) مهارةً مقدَّسة في بيئات العمل وأدبيات التنمية البشرية، لا يختلف على فضلها اثنان، وتحت هذا التقديس افتراضٌ ضمني لم يُفحص بعمق مفاده أنّ المشاعر في أصلها مشكلة تحتاج تدجيناً، وأنّ الحل دائماً مزيدٌ من السيطرة. هذا يجعلك تتعامل مع المشاعر بوصفها عدوّاً داخلياً ينبغي التحكم فيه، لا مجرد معلومةٍ تصلك عمّا يجري من حولك وفي داخلك. الغضب قد يكون استجابة دقيقة لظلم حقيقي وقع عليك، والحزن إشارةً إلى جرحٍ عميق لم يلتئم، والخوف تهديد وجودي من خطر حقيقي. ومن جُبل على ضبط المشاعر حتى استحالت فيه عادةً تعمل لا إرادياً قد تفوته هذه الإشارات جميعها، لأنه يكتم الإشارة قبل أن يفهم ما تقول.

ويُقدَّم ضبط المشاعر وصفةً تصلح لكل الأحوال، بمعزل عن السياق الذي يقع فيه. في موقف ظلم فادح قد يكون الهدوء تواطؤاً لا حكمة. وفي العلاقة الحميمة، كبت الهشاشة يمنع القرب الحقيقي بدل أن يهيّئ له، فالقرب لا يقوم إلا على قدر من الانكشاف: أن تظهر على حقيقتك، وأن تُرخي دفاعاتك. وفي بيئة قمعية قد يكون الاتزان المفرط استسلاماً لواقعٍ مظلم صار مألوفاً، كالضفدع في القدر المغلي. والقدرة على الغضب في الوقت المناسب والتمرد عند الضرورة أجدى من اتزانٍ زائف؛ وقد يكون الهدوء نفسه ضرباً من المقاومة، لا خضوعاً لواقعٍ كئيب. وما يصلح في حال قد يكون كارثة في أخرى، ورفعُ ضبط المشاعر إلى مرتبة المهارة المقدَّسة يغبّش هذا الفرق.

ويلتبس عند كثيرين ضبط المشاعر بالكبت. فكثير مما يُسمّى ضبطاً هو في حقيقته قمعٌ متكرّر للمشاعر غير المريحة: صاحبه يدفن غضبه أو حزنه أو خوفه تحت قناع من السكينة، من غير أن يمسّ جذر المشكلة. وهذه ليست مهارة بل حيلة دفاعية نفسية تؤجل المشكلة ولا تحلها. ضبط المشاعر بمعناه الصحيح يفترض أن يعي المرء دقائق مشاعره، ويحسن الإصغاء إليها، ويفهم ما ترسله إليه إشاراتها، ثم يختار كيف يستجيب، لا أن يكتم تلقائياً كل شعور ثقيل. وكثير مما نحسبه معلومةً عن العالم هو في حقيقته معلومةٌ مسجّلة في ذاكرتنا: فكرةٌ تُثير شعوراً، والشعور يُثير فكرةً تصدّقه، حتى يبلغنا وقد صار يقيناً عن الواقع. وأن تفهم حقيقة شعورك يعني أن تُبقيه في مجال الانتباه حتى تراه ماثلاً أمامك — من أين جاء، ولماذا جاء الآن، وأيّ فكرةٍ سبقته فولّدته — ومن رأى هذه الدورة بين الفكرة والشعور وهي تدور يدرك أنّ الكبت ليس الجواب الوحيد لكل شعور مزعج. على أنّ الإشارة لا تصدق دائماً: فقد يكون الغضب صدى جرحٍ قديم أكثر منه استجابةً لظلمٍ حاضر، وقد يرى الخوف تهديداً حيث لا تهديد. وتمييز الإشارة الصادقة من المضلِّلة هو ضبط المشاعر في أدقّ معانيه.

وجعلُ ضبط المشاعر حلاً على مستوى الأفراد يصرف النظر عن الظروف والبنية الجمعية التي أنشأت تلك المشاعر. من يعمل في بيئة سامّة، أو يعيش تحت ضغط مالي لا ينقطع، أو يواجه تمييزاً ممنهجاً، ليست مشكلته في قدرته على ضبط نفسه بل في الظروف والبنية السامة نفسها التي يعيش فيها. وحين يصير الحل «تحسين قدرتك على ضبط مشاعرك» يُنقل العبء إلى الفرد، وتُعفى البنية من السؤال، ويُعاد وصف الخلل البنيوي فشلاً شخصياً في إدارة المشاعر. وكأنّ العلاج الوحيد لموظفٍ يحترق في عمله أن يتربّع على سجادة اليوغا ويتنفّس بعمق، لا أن يطالب بحقّه في ظروفٍ تليق بإنسانيته. واستكانتُه مكسبٌ لغيره لا يُدفع ثمنه. وهو تفريغ للمشكلة من بعدها السياسي، يحوّل الانتباه من تغيير الظروف إلى إصلاح الذات.

There is a quiet temptation, and a dangerous one, in looking at natural selection as the blind force that shaped our bodies, our minds, and our moral inclinations over millions of years: to draw moral lessons from its workings, and to read the survival of the fittest as a warrant for how things ought to be. The evolutionary psychologist Steve Stewart-Williams puts his finger on the confusion in The Ape that Understood the Universe, where he holds that

“the assumption that if a trait was favored by natural selection it must be good or right or appropriate is always a mistake.”

The warning opens two questions we cannot avoid.

What is the relation between what nature has made of us and what we aim at? And if nature is not the source of the moral standard, where does the standard come from?

The fallacy is an old fixture of intellectual history, known in its popular form as the naturalistic fallacy: the slide from description to prescription, from what is to what ought to be. Natural selection cares nothing for justice or mercy; it is a cumulative mechanism that preserves whatever raises the odds of surviving and reproducing in a particular environment. Selfishness and aggression are as natural as cooperation, and may well be more deeply rooted. But breaking free of the fallacy leaves an uncomfortable gap: if nature is no moral authority, what is?

Philosophers have quarreled over this for centuries. Some hold that moral truths sit objectively in the world, waiting to be found; others trace them to a transcendent divine command; a third party takes them for purely human constructions with no existence outside our heads. Rejecting the naturalistic fallacy does not by itself supply an answer. What is wanted is a grounding that can be defended with tools available to everyone, believers and unbelievers alike, rather than one that assumes a particular metaphysics in advance.

One possible answer runs like this: moral standards are not facts discovered in the fabric of the universe but constructions arising out of continual human negotiation. When we say that medicine that keeps patients alive, and laws that protect the weak, are better than leaving people to their fates, we are declaring a collective commitment to values we have chosen — relieving suffering, and widening the circle of those we count as deserving care.

The objection comes at once. If values are human constructions, why should I hold to them? What stops another society from building quite different values and claiming they are just as sound? The whole question comes down to this: can we defend particular values without claiming they are written in the sky or carved into the nature of things?

Closest to modesty and honesty is to say that we bet on our values rather than prove them — though the bet is neither arbitrary nor blind. We choose the values we can justify by argument and reason, we test them by what they do in people’s lives, and they stay open afterward to public discussion and to revision.

When Stewart-Williams writes that “doing the right thing often means going against natural selection, and trying to correct nature’s mistakes,” he is describing that deliberate bet: we decide that the sympathy we feel deserves to become an act. The universe has commanded nothing. But when we examine the alternatives and compare possible worlds, we find that a world with less suffering and wider opportunity is better than one that leaves us to blind struggle — better by a standard we can justify in reason and defend to other people.

The position is a modest one, but it can be taken up and acted on. We refuse nature as a guide, we grant that our values are human constructions, and we still decline the sweeping relativism that levels all values alike. The instruments of moral thought remain in our hands: reason, experience, sympathy, and shared deliberation. None of this is a rejection of faith. A believer may see in these instruments a divine wisdom placed in us, an unbeliever may see the fruit of evolution, and both can appeal to the same standards of argument.

That answer still leaves the question standing. What makes the relief of suffering better than the maximization of power, or justice better than domination? Whoever holds that suffering ennobles the soul, and that power is a kind of elevation, has a case to make, as we have ours. That we choose what we can justify by reasoning, experience, and dialogue is a plausible answer, though it is not a proof; left there, values begin to look like a collective choice that any other choice could replace.

The truer thing is that values are not commands written into nature, and not arbitrary either. They have a ground, though the ground is not nature as an authority: it is a shared human reality — that we suffer, that we fear, that we need one another, that what we do affects the lives of others, and that we die. Out of that reality, relieving suffering, widening care, and justice become values that can be defended, because they make our common life less cruel and more fit for flourishing. Nature is no moral teacher, but it is the material of morality: we cannot draw an ought from it, and we cannot think morally outside it. The ape that understood the universe found no final answers in its understanding; it found itself obliged to compose its own, knowing they are provisional — open to revision, but never revised out of nothing, revised, rather, in the light of what we are able to do: make the world less cruel than we found it.

يلوح لنا إغراء خفيّ لكنه خطير حين ننظر إلى الانتخاب الطبيعي natural selection بوصفه القوة العمياء التي شكّلت أجسادنا وعقولنا و ميولنا الأخلاقية على مدى ملايين السنين: أن نستخلص من آلياته دروساً أخلاقية، وأن نرى في بقاء الأصلح مبرراً لما ينبغي أن يكون. وقد وضع عالم النفس التطوري ستيف ستيوارت-ويليامز يده على هذا الالتباس في كتابه «القرد الذي فهم الكون» The Ape that Understood the Universe حين قرر أن «افتراض أن السمة إذا حظيت بتفضيل الانتخاب الطبيعي فلا بد أنها جيدة أو صائبة أو ملائمة، هو خطأ دائماً». ويفتح هذا التحذير سؤالين لا مفرّ منهما:

والمغالطة راسخة في تاريخ الفكر، تُعرف بـ«المغالطة الطبيعية» naturalistic fallacy في صورتها الشائعة: الانزلاق من الوصف إلى المعيار، ومن ما هو الكائن إلى ما ينبغي أن يكون. فالانتخاب الطبيعي لا يكترث بالعدالة ولا بالرحمة؛ إنه آلية تراكمية تُبقي على السمات التي تزيد احتمال البقاء والتكاثر في بيئة بعينها. والأنانية والعدوان طبيعيان كالتعاون، بل ربما كانا أرسخ منه.

غير أن التحرر من هذه المغالطة يخلّف فراغاً مقلقاً: إذا لم تكن الطبيعة مرجعاً أخلاقياً، فما البديل؟

وقد تنازع الفلاسفة في هذا منذ قرون: فمنهم من يرى الحقائق الأخلاقية موجودة موضوعياً في الواقع تنتظر من يكتشفها، ومنهم من يردّها إلى أمر إلهي متعالٍ، ويعدّها ثالث بناءات بشرية صرفة لا وجود لها خارج عقولنا. ورفض المغالطة الطبيعية وحده لا يقدم إجابة جاهزة. والمطلوب تأسيس يمكن تبريره بأدوات متاحة للجميع، مؤمنين وغير مؤمنين، بدل أن نفترض سلفاً موقفاً ميتافيزيقياً بعينه.

وجوابٌ ممكن أن يقال: إن المعايير الأخلاقية ليست حقائق مُكتشفة في نسيج الكون، بل بناءات تنشأ من التفاوض البشري المستمر. فحين نقول إن الطب الذي يُبقي على حياة المرضى، والقوانين التي تحمي الضعفاء، أفضل من ترك الناس لمصائرهم، فإنما نعلن التزاماً جماعياً بقيم اخترناها: تخفيف المعاناة، وتوسيع دائرة من نراهم جديرين بالرعاية.

فإن قيل: إذا كانت القيم بناءات بشرية، فلماذا ألتزم بها؟ وما الذي يمنع مجتمعاً آخر أن يبني قيماً مغايرة تماماً ثم يدّعي أنها صحيحة بالقدر ذاته؟ والسؤال كله يعود إلى هذا:

هل نستطيع الدفاع عن قيم بعينها دون أن ندّعي أنها مكتوبة في السماء أو محفورة في طبيعة الأشياء؟

والأقرب إلى التواضع والصدق أن نقول أننا نراهن على قيمنا بدلاً من أن نبرهن عليها، لكنها مراهنة ليست تعسفية ولا عمياء: نختار من القيم ما نستطيع تبريره بالحجة والمنطق، ونختبره بما يصنعه في حياة الناس، ويبقى بعد ذلك مفتوحاً للنقاش الجماعي والمراجعة.

وحين يقول ستيوارت-ويليامز إن «فعل الصواب كثيراً ما يعني السير ضد الانتخاب الطبيعي»، فهو يصف هذه المراهنة الواعية: نقرر أن التعاطف الذي نشعر به جدير بأن يصير فعلاً. فالكون لم يأمرنا بشيء، لكننا حين نفحص البدائل ونقارن بين عوالم ممكنة، نجد أن عالماً يقلّل المعاناة ويوسّع الفرص خير من عالم يتركنا للصراع الأعمى، بمعيار نستطيع تبريره عقلاً والدفاع عنه أمام غيرنا.

وهذا موقف متواضع، لكنه قابل للأخذ به: نرفض الطبيعة مرشداً، ونقرّ بأن قيمنا بناءات بشرية، ولا نمضي مع ذلك إلى نسبية مطلقة تسوّي بين القيم جميعاً. تبقى بأيدينا أدوات التفكير الأخلاقي: المنطق والتجربة والتعاطف والحوار الجماعي. وليس في هذا رفض للإيمان؛ فالمؤمن قد يرى في هذه الأدوات حكمة إلهية أودعت فينا، ويراها غير المؤمن ثمرة للتطور، ويستطيع كلاهما أن يحتكم إلى معايير المحاججة نفسها.

لكن ذلك الجواب يترك السؤال قائماً: ما الذي يجعل تخفيف المعاناة أولى من تعظيم القوة، والعدل أولى من الهيمنة؟ ولمن يقول إنّ في المعاناة تهذيباً للنفس وإنّ في القوة سموّاً حجّةٌ يسوقها كما نسوق حجّتنا. وأن نختار ما نستطيع تبريره بالحجة والتجربة والحوار جوابٌ معقول، غير أنه ليس برهاناً؛ وإذا ترك عند هذا الحدّ بدت القيم اختياراً جماعياً يقبل أن يُستبدل بأيّ اختيار آخر.

والأدقّ أن القيم ليست أوامر مكتوبة في الطبيعة، وليست اعتباطية أيضاً. لها أساس، لكنه ليس الطبيعة بوصفها سلطة، بل واقع بشري مشترك: أننا نتألم، ونخاف، ونحتاج إلى غيرنا، ونعلم أن أفعالنا تؤثر في حياة سوانا، وأننا نموت. من هذا الواقع يصير تخفيف المعاناة وتوسيع الرعاية والعدل قيماً يمكن الدفاع عنها، لأنها تجعل العيش المشترك أقلّ قسوة وأصلح للازدهار. فالطبيعة ليست معلّماً للأخلاق، لكنها مادّتها: لا نستخرج منها ما ينبغي أن يكون، ولا نفكّر أخلاقياً خارجها. و«القرد الذي فهم الكون» لم يجد في فهمه إجابات نهائية، لكنه وجد نفسه ملزماً بصياغة إجاباته وهو يدرك أنها مؤقتة، قابلة للمراجعة، لكنها لا تُراجَع من فراغ، وإنما في ضوء ما نستطيعه: أن نجعل العالم أقلّ قسوة ممّا وجدناه.

There is a kinship between Sufism and artistic creation that has not been treated with the seriousness and depth it deserves in contemporary Arabic writing: the two converge at points fundamental enough that they can look like two faces of a single coin. The artist carries Sufism within, and for the mystic, creation is inseparable from the experience of gnosis. Both set out from contemplation and the labor of the mind, and both arrive at a state of making and of self-annihilation — whether inwardly and spiritually, as on the Sufi path, or in composition and artistic creativity, as with the writer and the artist. Three major Arab writers have taken up this connection: Adonis, in Sufism and Surrealism, approached the two as visions of the world rather than schools of writing; ʿĀṭif Jūda Naṣr traced the Sufi experience through its poetic symbols in The Poetic Symbol in Sufism; Naṣr Ḥāmid Abū Zayd read Ibn ʿArabī’s imagination with the tools of interpretation in The Philosophy of Hermeneutics. What concerns us here is narrower and more exact: fanāʾ itself — passing away — as a state common to both, kindled in the Sufi and the artist alike at the moment of creation.

The Algerian scholar Saïd Djabelkhir, in his book Sufism and Creativity, holds that both experiences rise out of an existential unease and a longing for the Good and the Absolute:

“Both experiences (Sufism and creativity) begin from an inquietude and a longing for the Good, and for the Absolute that unfolds in the expanse of the self or the external world of what we call the human being—whom Ibn ʿArabī names ‘the Greater World.’ The Sufi and the creator also often share an end: the good of the human being, the realization of his humanity through truth, justice, freedom, peace, and love—by way of aesthetic contemplation in the case of the artist, and by way of religious–gnostic contemplation in the case of the Sufi creator.”

Their paths, however, part: the artist gives that contemplation form as beauty, while the Sufi descends into gnostic contemplation in search of union with the Absolute.

The highest spiritual station the Sufi reaches is union with God and annihilation in Him; the highest creative station the artist reaches is total absorption in the creative process and annihilation in it, dissolving into it until the two become one, and from this a work of art is born.

What drives the Sufi to symbol is what drives the artist to it. Symbol abounds in religion, in Sufism, in poetry and in art because these are fields in which the soul stirs with ideas and feelings that “resist any decisive scientific or mathematical definition,” so whoever would express them gives them bodies drawn from what the senses already know. This is how Zaki Naguib Mahmoud, an Egyptian philosopher committed to positivist reason, explains Ibn ʿArabī’s symbolic method in Tarjumān al-Ashwāq. The movement is the same in both: from the inward outward.

Ibrāhīm al-Kūnī, the Libyan novelist, describes the bond this way:

“A creator cannot create without Sufism—by which I mean the spirit of Sufism and the attempt to pierce through things.”

The painter Walīd Ebeid agrees:

“Art—creativity—springs only from purity, from a Sufi state. Should the artist contend as mere man with men, enmity will overtake him, and news from the heavens will be cut off from him.”

And Henri Bergson arrives at the same thought from another direction:

“The artist’s eye possesses an immense mystical capacity for union with its object.”

The Egyptian broadcaster Wajdī al-Ḥakīm cites the example of his longtime friend, the composer Balīgh Ḥamdī. The secret of his genius, al-Ḥakīm says, was that he dissolved wholly into a melody in the first stages of its making, until he no longer heard or saw the people around him — dissolved in the work of creation and entirely present with it, exactly as in the state of fanāʾ, in which the Sufis lose the human world and live in another: the world of absolute beauty, absolute good, absolute truth.

تتجلّى بين التصوّف والإبداع الفنّي علاقة وثيقة لم تُعالج بالرصانة والعمق اللذين تستحقّهما في الكتابة العربية المعاصرة، إذ يتقاطعان في نقاطٍ جوهرية تجعل منهما وجهَين لعملة واحدة. فالمبدع يحمل في داخله روح التصوّف، والمتصوّف يتّسم بالإبداع بوصفه جزءًا لا يتجزّأ من تجربته العرفانية. ينطلق كلاهما من التأمّل والنشاط الذهني ليصل إلى حالةٍ من الخلق والفناء، سواء في الأبعاد الروحية كما في التجربة الصوفية، أو في التأليف والإنتاج الفنّي كما في حالة الكاتب والفنّان. على أنّ ثلاثة من كبار الكتّاب العرب توقفوا عند هذه الصلة: قارب أدونيس التصوّف والسوريالية في «الصوفية والسوريالية» بوصفهما رؤيتين للعالم لا مذهبين في الكتابة، وتتبّع عاطف جودة نصر تجربة الصوفية من طريق رموزها الشعرية في «الرمز الشعريّ عند الصوفية»، وقرأ نصر حامد أبو زيد خيال ابن عربي بأدوات التأويل في «فلسفة التأويل: دراسة في تأويل القرآن عند إبن عربي». غير أنّ ما يعنينا هنا أضيق من ذلك وأدقّ: الفناء نفسه بوصفه ظاهرة مشتركة تقدح في لحظة الإبداع، عند الصوفيّ وعند الفنّان معًا.

يؤكّد الباحث الجزائري سعيد جاب الخير في كتابه «التصوّف والإبداع» أنّ التجربتين تنبعان من قلقٍ وجوديّ وحنينٍ إلى الخير والمطلق:

«كلا التجربتين (التصوف والإبداع) تبدآن من قلق وحنين إلى الخير، وإلى المطلق الذي ينطلق في فضاء الذات أو العالم الخارجي لهذا الذي نسميه الإنسان، ويسميه ابن عربي «العالم الأكبر»، أيضًا غالبًا ما يشترك كلٌّ من الصوفي والمبدع في الهدف، وهو خير الإنسان في تحقيق إنسانيته من خلال الحق والعدل والحرية والسلام والحب، في حالة المبدع الفنان عبر التأمل الجمالي، وفي حالة المبدع الصوفي عبر التأمل الديني العرفاني»

لكنّ طريق كلٍّ منهما يختلف: فحين يعبّر المبدع عن هذا التأمّل عبر الجمال الفنّي، يغوص الصوفي في التأمّل العرفاني ليحقّق الاتحاد بالمطلق.

فأسمى مرحلة روحية يصلها الصوفي هي الاتحاد بالله والفناء فيه، وأسمى مرحلة إبداعية يصلها الفنان هي الاندماج الكامل بعمله الإبداعي والفناء فيه، يذوب فيه حتى يصيرا شيئًا واحدًا، وينتج عن ذلك عملٌ إبداعي.

وما يدفع الصوفيّ إلى الرمز ذات السبب نفسه الذي يدفع الفنّان إليه: فالرمز إنّما يكثر في الدين والتصوّف والشعر والفنّ لأنّها مجالات تختلج فيها بالنفس أفكارٌ ومشاعر «يتعذر تعريفها بالحد العلمي الرياضي الحاسم»، فيصوّرها صاحبها في مجسّدات ممّا تألفه الحواسّ. هكذا يفسّر زكي نجيب محمود طريقة الرمز عند ابن عربي في «ترجمان الأشواق»، وهو المنحاز إلى العقل الوضعيّ. والحركة واحدة عند الصوفيّ وعند الفنّان: من باطنٍ إلى ظاهر.

يصف إبراهيم الكوني هذا الارتباط بقوله:

«لا يستطيع المبدع أن يبدع بدون تصوّف؛ بمعنى روح التصوّف ومحاولة اختراق الأشياء»

ويوافقه الرسّام وليد عبيد:

«لا ينبع الفنّ (الإبداع) إلّا من نقاء (حالة تصوّف)، فلو نافس الفنّان بشرًا، تملّكه العداء، وانقطعت عنه أخبار السماء»

ويشاركهما الرأيَ الفيلسوف الفرنسي هنري بيرجسون (Henri Bergson):

«عين الفنان تملك مقدرة صوفية هائلة على الاتحاد بموضوعها»

أمّا الإعلامي وجدي الحكيم فيستشهد بتجربة رفيق دربه الموسيقار بليغ حمدي، ويقول إنّ سرّ عبقريته كان ذوبانه الكامل في اللحن خلال مراحل إنتاجه الأولى، حتى ما عاد يسمع المحيطين به ولا يراهم، فيكون في حالة ذوبانٍ وحضورٍ كامل مع العملية الإبداعية، تمامًا كحالة الفناء التي يفقد الصوفية فيها عالم الناس، فيعيشون في عالمٍ آخر، هو عالم الجمال المطلق، والخير المطلق، والحق المطلق.
