The reality is that I have not been practicing what I preach these last few years. If you have ever attended one of my webinars or listened to me being interviewed on a podcast, you’ve likely heard me say that you have to focus on one thing at a time to be truly successful. Yet, I have probably never done that myself or if I have focused on one thing, it wasn’t for a meaningful amount of time. I have a habit of creating something and then moving on to the next thing before giving the first “something” the time & effort it deserves.

It’s time to change that.

“The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results”, a book by Gary Keller, teaches that the only pathway to success is by focusing on one goal or outcome and putting all of your energy towards it. If you find yourself doing something that doesn’t directly relate to that goal, you must stop.

The funny thing is that I read this book, nodded my head through the entire thing and had revelation after revelation regarding the importance of singularity of focus but then I finished the book only to go on my merry way continuing my same habits.

I always make excuses for the fact that I switch lanes so often when the reality is the lane-switching is a form of procrastination due to constant self-doubt. The result being a pattern of years-long self-sabotage.

Recently, I saw a YouTube video by a business coach Maria Wendt about the Rule of Ones and it brought me back to Keller’s book. Her advice is that you should focus on promoting ONE thing on ONE platform for ONE year. And, well, I’m doing just that. Ever since I made that commitment with myself I have felt totally out of my comfort zone. I’m feeling profoundly scared of failure, FOMO on opportunities that don’t even exist yet and just general anxiety and doubt that I can actually do this.

The good news is that I’m fighting through these feelings. I’m not going to interpret being uncomfortable as a sign that I’m doing the wrong thing this time. I made the commitment, and I’m going to see what happens when I actually stick with it.

How has being a mom shaped the way you show up in the creator economy?

Being a mom has taught me so much, like to truly believe in myself, listen to my own voice and get out of my comfort zone, even if it scares the shit out of me. That mindset has allowed me to become a creator myself and stay true to my own voice.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a mom creator based on your area of expertise?

Never underestimate yourself. There will always be followers and brands that want to hear your story and see value in your voice. Stick to your authenticity, be consistent with your content and opportunities will find their way to you.

What’s one misconception you wish more people understood about moms working in the creator economy?

Being a mom and a creator does not mean that your content needs to be about being a mom, raising kids or restocking your refrigerator. You can also be a content creator without anyone knowing about your personal life - you can create content about AI, arts and crafts, fashion, a hobby or your profession.

They are either leaving because the cost of childcare and lack of flexibility in this broken system here in the United States, or they are leaving because they are being laid off and unable to find other employment.

Recently I got on TikTok and I told moms to make a backup plan for themselves if they are working and earning income.

Moms wanted to respond to me without even really listening to what I had to say. The comments I got consistently were, “I have to earn money.” “I don’t have a choice.” “I’m the breadwinner.” “We can’t just rely on one income.” “My husband’s salary barely covers the bills.” “We won’t survive if I don’t go back to work.”

And here’s the thing. I believe you when you say you have no choice but to earn an income because I also had to earn an income. I did not have the choice to just not work and honestly, I worked hard to build a career for myself - I didn’t want to just abandon it when I became a mom. However, what I refuse to accept and what I need everyone to realize is that even though you have to earn an income, you do not have to earn an income by working for an employer.

You can earn an income on your own terms. You can build something for yourself. And over time, it's absolutely possible to replace - and even exceed-the income you're earning today.

I know what is possible because I’ve done it myself - I’ve replaced and exceeded my full time six-figure income. Furthermore, I did it 16 years ago when there were far fewer tools, resources and options than there are today. There just seems to be such a lack of faith and such a lack of awareness by moms that they can do their own thing. Even more challenging, many moms just seem to equate building your own thing or the “creator economy” with “being an influencer.” Making money and setting up an income stream does not mean that you have to be on video or that you have to be an influencer or that you even have to have an audience.

But what’s probably the most heartbreaking about the situation is the downright limiting beliefs moms have around making money for themselves.

I repeat: You don’t have to work for an employer to make money. And in fact, you’re better off, even if you are totally settled in your job, creating an income stream for yourself just in case something in life changes before it changes. The sad thing is, in the United States, there are no protections. If you’re pregnant or postpartum, employers can still lay you off. People say it’s hard to start your own thing. Know what’s even harder? Being let go from your job unexpectedly and then being desperate to find something new.

My biggest suggestion for you is to start creating a backup plan before you even need one. Start now.

Start setting up revenue streams for yourself before you even need one. There is an expression that it’s easier to get a job when you have a job. And that’s because when you’re desperate and you’re trying to force something, you’re almost repelling it. So right now, if you love your work and you’re making money, especially if you’re the breadwinner, set up a little something for yourself because the less you actually need it to work is probably the faster it’s going to work for you. I’m also telling you to do this NOW because some of the best revenue streams are the ones that compound over time.

Build your business on a website.

Not Instagram.

I know that probably isn’t the sexy answer.

It’s much more exciting to think about going viral or getting your first brand deal. But before you spend hours creating content for platforms you don’t own, I want you to build something that is yours.

Here’s why.

You can’t build your house on someone else’s land.

Imagine spending years building your dream home.

You paint every room. You landscape the yard. You make it beautiful.

Then one day the landowner knocks on the door and says, “We’re changing the rules. You have to leave.”

That’s exactly what you’re doing if your entire business lives on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube.

Your followers aren’t actually your followers.

They’re Meta’s.

Or TikTok’s.

Or YouTube’s.

If you become a local creator instead of a parenting creator, your website changes with you.

It grows as you grow.

Your website gives you a digital footprint.

Here’s another reason I’m so passionate about having your own website.

It makes you findable.

When someone Googles your name, your business, or a question you’ve answered, your website gives you a chance to show up.

But it’s not just about Google anymore.

We’re entering a world where more and more people are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and other AI tools for recommendations instead of typing questions into a search engine. Those tools need somewhere to pull information from.

Start simple.

Here’s what I’d do if I were starting over today.

I’d tell people who I help.

I’d explain how I help them.

I’d add one way to join my email list.

That’s it.

Not twenty pages.

Not a fancy logo.

Not an elaborate brand strategy.

Just a place on the internet that’s mine.

Because once you have that foundation, everything else gets easier.

Your Instagram has somewhere to send people.

Your TikTok has somewhere to send people.

Your Pinterest pins have somewhere to send people.

Your newsletters have somewhere to send people.

You’re no longer creating content that disappears into the algorithm.

You’re building an asset.

Over the past sixteen years, I’ve tested a lot of different business models.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:

Those three assets have made me money while I was sleeping, on vacation, and spending time with my family.

These are the things that compound over time.

Social media is important.

I use it every day.

But I don’t build my business on social media.

I build my business around assets I control.

That’s the difference.

Before you worry about going viral...

Before you worry about making the perfect Reel...

Build your home.

Everything else can grow from there.

This brings me to the launch of my new app (which I don’t think I could be more excited to announce today).

Looking back, there were four epiphanies that led me here.

Epiphany 1: There is no “one size fits all” path.

The first epiphany is that many times in my journey, I followed a path that I thought was the “correct” path - in other words, I did what I thought I was supposed to do. This started very early in my career and much of this mindset was passed down from my parents. The path I was told was really the only option for me was graduate a 4 year college > get a corporate job > climb the ladder until I got married and had kids.

That was pretty much the exact path I took until I had my son and realized I didn’t want to stop making money and abandon my career. So, even though I got some push back from some members of my family, I decided to forge my own path and become an entrepreneur once I had my son.

Even as I was designing my new path, I still often paved it with actions I saw other entrepreneurs take - even if it wasn’t the right action for me. For example, I worked at several start-ups in the early 00’s. What I saw in those start-ups was a path of create a pitch deck > raise money from VC’s > exit. I didn’t fully understand all the things that went into that but I followed the path until I hit too many dead ends as far as raising money.

A big issue for me was that I didn’t understand that bootstrapping was an option until it became the only option for me. It wasn’t until I was several years into my business that I realized bootstrapping was the best option for me. I also didn’t understand the benefits of a “lifestyle business”. (The phrase “lifestyle business” was said to me by VCs and advisors with a tone of what I would call disdain. So, I didn’t think I wanted a lifestyle business - when, in fact, I did.)

Epiphany 2: More money does not mean it’s the right fit. One thing about me is that I do know how to make money. I’m not saying that to brag, I’m just saying if I need money, I know how to make it. However, that doesn’t mean that I haven’t made money that didn’t come with a massive invisible tax. For example, this year I was approached with a number of consulting opportunities. Since Gugu Guru is pretty much run by my team now, I thought, “Ok, I will make some money from these consulting gigs.” And, yes, I made a lot of money in a short time but I hated every single second of it. I don’t like zoom calls where I have to prove my worth. I don’t like being ordered around like a lackey or disrespected just because I am being paid a good rate. I also hate any kind of drama or office politics and sometimes consulting gigs involve those. So I quit pretty much all of my consulting gigs.

Epiphany 3: If you listen to the gurus or go on LinkedIn and read what accomplished entrepreneurs suggest, you’ll see that many people recommend you become THE expert at something. In other words - find a topic and you learn every single thing about it so you become the go-to for that topic.

For a long time, people just thought I am an expert at “mom influencer marketing”. However, that never really felt quite right for me. It’s kind of like when I started a baby products recommendation platform and people thought I was a baby gear expert. Do I know more about baby products than the average person? Probably. Am I a gear expert - absolutely not. So I struggled and asked myself “What am I am expert in?” All the while, I was taking courses like crazy. Hiring coaches. Teaching myself a bunch of different income streams and having success with them. Then it dawned on me in the last couple months.

I am an expert at different ways moms can monetize but even more than that, I can help moms figure out which is the best monetization path for them.

Epiphany 4: Moms don’t know all the possibilities. This is something I am reminded of almost every single day. Moms will come to me and say things like, “I want to build something for myself but I don’t want to be an influencer. “ or “I want to go to your workshop but I just don’t want to be on camera.” To every mom reading this right now: there are SO many ways for you to make money and build a business for yourself. You don’t have to have a following. You don’t need to be on camera. Influencer is an income path I’d likely only recommend to a select few. It’s the exception, not the norm.

Within minutes, they get fifty different answers.

“Do UGC.”

Imagine hearing all of those answers when you’re just trying to make an extra few hundred dollars a month.

I think it’s one of the biggest reasons people never get started. Or worse, they do get started, hear about another opportunity, switch paths, then switch again...and again.

Six months later, they have five half-finished businesses and nothing that’s had enough time to actually work.

Looking back, I don’t regret any of it. I wasn't failing because I chose the wrong path. I was failing because I kept chasing someone else's.

Those experiences are exactly why I can create resources like this today.

I’ve personally earned income through blogging, affiliate marketing, influencer partnerships, digital products, UGC, TikTok Shop, consulting, and community building. I’ve also bought more courses than I care to admit.

That doesn’t make me an expert in everything.

But it does give me perspective.

I’ve learned that making money and building assets aren’t always the same thing.

I’ve learned that just because someone else built a million-dollar business one way doesn’t mean that’s the right path for you.

And I’ve learned that the biggest mistake most creators make isn’t choosing the wrong path.

It’s changing paths before they’ve given one enough time to work.

Not because anything was broken. Not because my business wasn’t working. But because, after sixteen years of building businesses, testing ideas, hiring coaches, taking courses, chasing opportunities, and experimenting with just about every corner of the creator economy, I finally understand what I’m actually supposed to be building.

This isn’t a pivot.

It’s a homecoming.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve tried a lot of things. Gugu Guru. Consulting. Courses. Coaching. Masterminds. Community building. Influencer marketing. User-generated content. TikTok Shop. Affiliate marketing. Digital products.

Some of those things made good money.

Some of them didn’t.

But here’s what surprised me: some of the things that made me the most money were the things I enjoyed the least.

For years, I thought success meant saying yes to whatever was working.

Now I realize success means building something you actually want to wake up and work on every morning.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean it’s what you’re meant to do.

People told me I’d make a great coach. So I became a coach.

I hated it.

Someone told me I should have a mastermind. I started one.

It made good money.

I hated it.

Consulting? Same story. I built a successful consulting business. It gave me flexibility and a great income, but if I’m being completely honest, I never loved it.

Even recently, I experimented with TikTok Shop. I genuinely had fun learning how it worked. I love learning new things. But somewhere along the way, it stopped feeling like an experiment and started feeling like another thing on my to-do list.

That’s when I knew.

It wasn’t helping me become who I wanted to become.

For a long time, I thought all of these changes meant I couldn’t stick with anything.

I used to be embarrassed by how many times I changed directions. I hired coach after coach hoping someone would tell me exactly what I was supposed to build. When their systems didn’t work for me, I assumed I was the problem. I even joked that I was “uncoachable.”

I don’t believe that anymore.

I wasn’t failing.

I was trying to squeeze myself into businesses that belonged to someone else.

Looking back now, I don’t see sixteen years of pivots.

I see sixteen years of research.

Every business I built, every course I bought, every revenue stream I tested, every coach I hired, every mistake I made—they all taught me something. More importantly, they taught me something that I can now pass on to someone else.

And that’s when everything clicked.

A few weeks ago, I hosted workshops for moms who wanted to build businesses in the creator economy.

Over and over again, I heard the same thing.

“I’m interested... but I don’t want to be an influencer.”

“I’m interested... but I don’t want to be on camera.”

Those comments made me take pause.

Because they reminded me that I spend so much time immersed in this world that I forget most people aren’t.

To me, it’s obvious that the creator economy is so much bigger than influencing.

It’s obvious that you don’t have to dance on TikTok.

It’s obvious that you don’t need hundreds of thousands of followers.

It’s obvious that there are dozens of ways to build a creator business.

But it isn’t obvious.

Not to most moms.

And that realization changed everything.

I realized I had skipped the most important step.

I was trying to help moms build creator businesses before helping them understand what was actually possible.

The truth is, most moms don’t need another course telling them how to grow on Instagram.

They need someone to say, “Here are all the different ways you can build something for yourself. Let’s figure out which one actually fits your life.”

Because here’s what I wish someone had told me sixteen years ago.

You don’t have to build the business everyone else is building.

You don’t have to chase the business model making the most money.

You don’t have to force yourself into a business that drains you simply because someone else says it’s the fastest path to success.

You get to build a business that fits your strengths, your personality, your family, and your definition of success.

Ironically, this is something I’ve been doing my entire life.

I’ve always been the person helping friends rewrite their résumés, figure out what job they should apply for, or recognize strengths they couldn’t see in themselves. I’ve never had formal HR training, but I’ve always loved seeing where people fit.

Now I realize that’s exactly what I’ve been called to do for moms in the creator economy.

Not tell every mom to build the same business.

Help each mom discover the business she’s actually meant to build.

That’s a very different mission.

It also explains why I no longer feel pulled in a hundred different directions.

From now on, every decision I make has to pass through two questions.

Does this help me help moms?

Does it scale so I can reach a million moms?

If the answer is no, it doesn’t mean I’ll never do it.

It just means it’s not what I’m building right now.

For the first time in sixteen years, I know what my “yes” is.

It’s helping moms understand the incredible opportunities that exist in today’s creator economy.

What do I actually want to be known for?

Not what I want to sell.

It’s funny because years ago I took every career assessment imaginable.

Almost every one of them told me the same thing.

I’d probably be happy in education.

The person who loves brainstorming career ideas.

What’s funny is that every now and then I’ll run into someone I haven’t seen in twenty or thirty years.

They’ll say,

“You probably don’t remember this, but you helped me get my job at...”

And honestly...

Sometimes I don’t remember.

But they do.

Because helping people find their place has always been one of my favorite things to do.

Over the last sixteen years I’ve explored just about every corner of the creator economy.

I’ve made money through:

Then help her choose one that fits her life well enough that she’ll actually stick with it.

I have been thinking a lot lately about what the creator economy makes possible for moms.

Not in a vague, inspirational poster kind of way.

In a very real-life way.

The ability to earn from your ideas. The ability to build something around your actual life. The ability to create income streams that do not require you to sit in meetings all day, commute to an office, or ask permission to be creative.

In my opinion, one of the greatest gifts of being a creator is flexibility.

Flexibility to be home when your kids need you. Flexibility to build around your season of life. Flexibility to say yes to experiences that matter.

For me, one of those experiences is travel.

I just returned from a trip to London (took my daughter to see Bad Bunny at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as a graduation gift - woo hoo), and like a lot of mom creators, travel naturally becomes part of my content. Not because I am trying to become a travel blogger, but because travel is part of my life, my work, my family, and my perspective.

In my content, I might share where I dined. What we did in a short timeframe. What made the trip easier. What I wish I knew before going. What it felt like to get away, reset, explore, and come home with new ideas.

And here is the part a lot of creators miss: That travel content may already be valuable.

You may already have posts, newsletters, blog articles, TikToks, Instagram captions, packing lists, hotel mentions, destination recaps, or family travel tips that people are reading, saving, clicking, and asking about.

But you may not be earning from that layer of your content yet.

Not because you are doing anything wrong.

Because you probably do not think of yourself as a travel creator.

In fact, many of the moms in this community aren’t travel creators at all. They’re parenting creators, local creators, lifestyle creators, business creators, UGC creators, and community builders. Travel is simply one part of their story.

I know so many mom creators who create lifestyle content, motherhood content, business content, wellness content, home content, fashion content, or food content, and travel just naturally shows up inside of it.

• A weekend away.

• A family vacation.

• A road trip.

• A hotel you loved.

• A work trip.

• A destination that made traveling with kids easier.

• A list of things you packed that actually helped.

• A post about how to make travel less stressful.

• A recap of a local getaway.

That is all travel content.

And if people are reading it, searching for it, saving it, clicking on it, or asking you for recommendations, it may already be doing more than you realize.

You may not need more content. You may need to earn more from what already exists.

This is something I say to mom creators all the time in different ways.

You do not always need to create more.

Sometimes you need to look at what is already working and ask: how can this work harder for me? Go deep and get mileage from the content you’ve already created.

Why Moms Make Great Local Creators

Moms are already doing the work.

We are already researching activities.

We are already asking friends for recommendations.

We are already trying new restaurants, booking birthday parties, finding kid-friendly coffee shops, testing gyms, comparing playgrounds, and figuring out what is actually worth the money.

We are already the unofficial tour guides of our families.

The difference is turning that natural behavior into content.

Instead of simply going to the farm, the coffee shop, the museum, or the local event, you document it.

You share what you loved.

You tell people what to know before they go.

You show the parking situation, the kid-friendliness, the food, the vibe, the price point, the stroller access, the bathroom situation, the things moms actually want to know.

That is valuable.

And it does not need to be complicated.

One thing I love about local content creation is that it creates a ripple effect.

When you share a great coffee shop, more people discover it.

When you highlight a local museum, more families visit.

When you review a local restaurant, you help another mom decide where to spend her money.

When you feature a small business, you help increase awareness for someone who is working incredibly hard to build something in your community.

In many ways, local creators become ambassadors for the places they love.

I often tell moms that local content creation doesn’t have to feel like marketing.

Think of it as helping.

You’re helping

• families find great experiences

• small businesses get discovered

• people feel more connected to where they live.

And when you do that consistently, opportunities often follow.

The income is wonderful.

But so is knowing that your content is helping your community thrive.

You Can Start With No Followers

One of the best things about local creator content is that you can start from zero.

You can create a simple blog, Instagram account, TikTok account, or all three, and start treating your hometown like a travel destination.

Think of yourself as a local guide.

You can create content like:

• Best kid-friendly coffee shops in your town

• A rainy day activity guide for local families

• A review of your favorite playground

• A day trip itinerary within one hour of your house

• The best local restaurants for families

• What to do this weekend with kids

• Hidden gems in your town

• Your favorite local businesses

You do not need a huge audience to begin.

You just need to start creating useful local content.

Over time, you become known for something.

And that is where opportunities can begin.

There Are Multiple Ways to Monetize Local Influence

This is what I love most about this path.

Local influencing is not one business model.

It can lead to several different income streams.

You might earn through affiliate links or local business referrals.

You might participate in creator campaigns.

You might work with local businesses on content.

You might eventually sell guides, newsletters, memberships, or local resources.

You might use platforms like TikTok GO to connect local or travel-related content to real-world bookings.

A lot of this content is stuff I am already doing with my family anyway.

Power in Numbers

I also believe there is power in doing this with other moms.

If you want to become a local creator, find other moms in your area who are interested too.

Creating is more fun when you are not doing it alone.

You can meet up.

Create together.

Support each other’s content.

Share opportunities.

Pitch local businesses together.

Build momentum as a group.

And when it comes to something like working with local businesses, it is often easier when there is more than one creator involved.

A coffee shop, gym, restaurant, or local boutique may be much more interested if there is a small group of local mom creators who can help spread the word.

That is why local community matters.

It is not just emotional support.

It can become part of the business model.

The future of the creator economy is not only national.

It is local.

Local creators aren’t just building audiences.

They’re building stronger communities.

And moms have a real opportunity to be part of it - creating income, community, and impact all at the same time.

A few years ago, I was speaking with a mom creator who was frustrated that she wasn’t getting any brand partnerships.

She was creating content consistently, had a growing audience and she was clearly knowledgeable.

But when I visited her profile, I immediately noticed a problem.

There was no email address, website or even a link in bio.

And, worse, no clear explanation of who she was or what she created content about.

If a brand had wanted to work with her, they would have had no idea how to reach her.

And unfortunately, this is incredibly common.

Many creators spend months worrying about how to get opportunities when they haven’t prepared themselves to receive opportunities.

The good news?

This is one of the easiest problems to fix.

You don’t need hundreds of posts, a fancy media kit, or thousands of followers.

You simply need to make it easy for people to understand who you are, what you create, and how to contact you.

That’s what being opportunity ready is all about.

The Good News: Brands Are Looking for Specific Creators

One mistake I see new creators make is trying to appeal to everyone.

They keep their bio vague, avoid sharing details about themselves or worry that choosing a niche will limit opportunities.

In reality, the opposite is true.

If you’re a mom of tweens in the Midwest who collects Pokémon cards and reviews spaghetti sauces, put that in your bio.

Somewhere out there is a brand looking for exactly that person.

Brands are becoming more specific, not less.

Today, brands aren’t simply looking for “moms.”

They’re looking for:

• Moms of toddlers

• Moms of tweens

• Moms of teenagers

• Homeschooling moms

• Working moms

• Stay-at-home moms

• Moms in the Midwest

• Moms who travel

• Moms who garden

• Moms who love fitness

• Moms who cook

• Moms who review products

• Moms who love Disney

And I know this to be 100% true because brands contact us every single day and we see the requirements getting narrower and narrower.

The more specific you become, the easier it becomes for the right opportunities to find you.

Put it in your bio.

Own it.

Because somewhere out there is a brand looking for exactly that person.

The goal isn’t to be for everyone; it is to be recognizable to the right people.

You Don’t Need to Look Like a Professional Creator

Another misconception is that creators need a perfectly polished online presence before opportunities will come.

You don’t.

You do need clarity.

A brand should be able to land on your profile and quickly answer four questions:

1. Who are you?

2. What do you create content about?

3. Who is your audience?

4. How do I contact you?

If those questions aren’t answered within a few seconds, you’re creating unnecessary friction.

And friction kills opportunities.

Before You Chase Opportunities, Build Your Foundation

One thing I teach inside Mom Creators is that opportunities are easier to attract when your foundation is already in place.

Think about it this way:

If a local business owner lands on your profile today, what would they see?

Would they immediately understand what you’re about?

Would they know how to reach you?

Would they see examples of your work?

Would they feel confident reaching out?

If the answer is no, that’s where you should focus first.

Not on pitching, networking, or finding opportunities.

On becoming ready for them.

But most moms aren’t trying to become full-time content creators.

Because it doesn’t matter how exciting an opportunity is if you can’t maintain it.

The same is true in the creator economy.

One of the reasons so many moms never gain traction isn’t because they aren’t capable.

It’s because they build systems that don’t fit their lives.

They start posting every day.

They commit to multiple platforms.

They try to keep up with creators who have entirely different circumstances.

Eventually, life happens.

A sick child, a busy season, summer vacation, a work deadline - and the entire system falls apart.

Then comes the worst part.

They assume they failed.

But often the problem wasn’t the creator.

The problem was the system.

The system required more than their life could realistically support.

That’s why I believe the goal should never be to build the biggest creator business possible.

The goal should be to build the biggest creator business you can sustain.

Because sustainability creates consistency.

And consistency creates results.

The truth is that most successful creators aren’t doing extraordinary things.

They’re doing ordinary things repeatedly.

Week after week.

Month after month.

Year after year.

While everyone else is starting and stopping.

And that requires a different approach.

But I also knew I didn’t want to spend my son’s childhood sitting in an office from 9 to 5. I wanted more flexibility, freedom and to be present for the moments that mattered while still building something meaningful for myself.

The problem was that back then, there wasn’t really a roadmap.

There was no “creator economy” - it was pretty much just bloggers.

There were no communities teaching moms how to build flexible businesses online. There weren’t thousands of examples of women creating income streams from content, communities, digital products, affiliate marketing, or brand partnerships.

So I did what many moms do - I started figuring it out as I went.

Looking back, that decision completely changed the course of my life.

Today, sixteen years later, the opportunities available to moms are greater than ever.

What took me years to learn can often be learned in months now. There are more tools, more platforms, more ways to monetize, more examples to follow.

And perhaps most importantly, there are more paths.

That’s both the good news and the bad news.

The good news is that there has never been a better time to build a freedom-based business around your interests, knowledge, experiences, and strengths.

The bad news is that all those opportunities can feel overwhelming.

I see it happen all the time and I have personally lived it - over the years, I've tried blogging, product recommendations, community building, events, content creation, consulting, affiliate partnerships, course creation, and more.

It goes a little something like this:

A mom decides she wants in on the creator economy.

She hears about TikTok Shop. Then someone tells her she should start a Substack. Then she discovers UGC. Then affiliate marketing. Then digital products. Then memberships or community building.

The fact that there are so many people on social media trying to sell what works for them, makes it even harder not to compare, fall victim to shiny object syndrome and pivot.

Before long, she’s trying to figure out ten different business models at the same time.

And because she’s trying to pursue all of them, she doesn’t make progress on any of them.

The truth is that most moms don’t fail because they pick the wrong path.

They fail because they never pick a single path at all.

They stay stuck researching or pivoting.

The comparing, planning, wondering and waiting for clarity before taking action.

But clarity doesn’t come before action.

Clarity comes from action.

The goal isn’t to find the perfect creator business.

The goal is to find your first creator business.

Because once you start moving, everything gets easier.

You discover what you enjoy.

You learn what comes naturally to you.

You build confidence.

And most importantly, you build momentum.

Why Moms Are Uniquely Positioned to Win

One of the biggest misconceptions about the creator economy is that you need a massive audience to participate. You don’t.

What brands are looking for today is authenticity, trust and connection.

And moms have all three.

Moms are often the decision-makers behind household spending.

We research products, share recommendations, solve problems, we help our friends.

We influence purchasing decisions every single day, whether we realize it or not.

Brands know this.

That’s why mom creators continue to be some of the most valuable voices in the marketplace.

So I don’t know who needs to hear this today but you DON’T need:

• permission to get started

• fancy equipment

• a huge following

• to quit your job

And you certainly don’t need to have everything figured out.

You simply need to choose a starting point.

I expected interest from younger moms with babies and toddlers at home. Moms looking for flexible income streams while navigating early motherhood.

And yes, there’s definitely some of that.

But surprisingly, many of the moms reaching out are actually in a different season entirely.

Their kids are older now, more independent and more self-sufficient.

And for the first time in a long time, these moms finally have a little space to think about themselves again.

What do I want?
What am I good at?
What could I create?
What’s next for me?

Honestly, I think a lot of women hit this point and realize they’ve spent years pouring into everyone else while quietly putting parts of themselves on pause.

And now they’re ready to rediscover those parts.

That’s a huge reason why I wanted to create this workshop.

Not just to teach moms how to “be creators.”

But to help them realize they already have something valuable to share.

Because the truth is, I don’t think great creators are simply people who know how to edit videos or chase trends.

The best creators help people.

They share.
They teach.
They document.
They encourage.
They simplify.
They entertain.
They connect.

And most importantly? They create from a place of service.

That’s the spin I care about most when it comes to content creation.

Not becoming internet famous or pretending to be perfect or manufacturing a fake life online.

I’m interested in helping moms create content that actually contributes something good to the world.

Maybe that’s helping another mom organize her home.
Maybe it’s sharing wellness routines, recipes, parenting tips, budgeting advice, fitness journeys, DIY projects, business lessons, mindset shifts, or creative hobbies.

Maybe it’s simply documenting a personal journey that helps someone else feel less alone.

The point is: your life experience matters.

And I think many moms underestimate how much knowledge they’ve gained simply by living life.

At the workshop, we’re going to spend time identifying those gifts and figuring out how they could translate into content, community, and even income opportunities.

We’ll talk about:

• how to uncover your unique strengths

• different “vehicles” for creating (video, writing, newsletters, social media, products, businesses, etc.)

• how to figure out who you want to help

• how to never run out of content ideas

• the fundamentals of creating content people genuinely want to follow

But I also want this event to feel inspiring and fun.

So in addition to the workshop itself, we’re going to have networking, gift bags, raffle prizes, and products from brands that believe in what we’re building.

And for me, it starts on Long Island.

Art Pop has become such a special gathering place for creativity, connection, workshops, and local community events, so it felt like the perfect home for this first workshop.

One topic I’m especially excited to discuss is how moms can use content creation — particularly social media content — to support local businesses.

I think this is one of the most overlooked opportunities in the creator economy.

Local businesses need visibility, storytelling and, community support.

And moms are uniquely positioned to help bring attention to the amazing businesses in their own communities.

Most people will consume the information.
Only a small percentage will actually do something with it.

For years, I heard that and thought, Of course I’ll take action.

But it wasn’t until I started working closely with mom creators that I truly understood how accurate that statement is.

Over and over again, I’ve shared opportunities, resources, and step-by-step playbooks with moms.

And many never take the first step.

Not because they aren’t talented, don’t have something valuable to offer, or aren’t capable.

They simply haven’t made the decision.

And that’s what this all comes down to.

You Have to Decide

You have to decide you want something different for your life.

You have to decide your gifts are worth sharing (and trust me, they are).

You have to decide you are willing to take action, even when you feel scared, uncertain, or unqualified.

No course, community, coach, or mentor can make that decision for you.

I can give you the roadmap, point you to the tools and show you examples of moms who are doing it every day.

But at some point, you have to say:

Moms Are More Powerful Than They Realize

Let’s start with one undeniable fact:

Moms are incredibly powerful.

According to Forbes, women control or influence approximately 85% of household purchasing decisions.

That means brands want to reach moms because moms drive consumer behavior.

But your power goes far beyond your purchasing influence.

You are powerful because of what you know.

Because you have done one or all of these things:

• learned things through your life experiences

• developed skills

• solved problems

• overcome challenges

And there are people who need exactly what you have to offer.

Your Gift Is the Business

Every mom has a gift.

Maybe you’re great at organizing.
Maybe you know how to cook healthy meals on a budget.
Maybe you’ve navigated infertility, homeschooling, special needs parenting, menopause or building a business from home.

Maybe you simply have a way of making people laugh and feel less alone.

That gift is your starting point.

Content is just the vehicle.

I often compare content creators to great tennis players.

The best tennis players have a strong serve.

The best content creators do too.

Their content serves a purpose.

It educates.
It inspires.
It entertains.
It solves a problem.

When your content consistently serves others, you build trust.

And when you build trust, opportunities follow.

When You Help People, the Money Follows

This is one of the biggest mindset shifts you can make:

Your goal is not to chase money.

Your goal is to help people.

When you lead with service and consistently share something of value, the money becomes a byproduct of the trust you’ve built.

That’s true whether you become a content creator, coach, consultant, or entrepreneur.

Help people first.

The rest follows.

Pick One Goal and Stay Focused

Once you’ve decided to move forward, resist the urge to do everything at once.

Pick one goal.

Maybe that goal is:

• Publish your first five videos.

• Land your first UGC partnership.

• Build a small but engaged audience.

• Earn your first $500 online.

Focus on that one goal and give it time.

Don’t Panic and Pivot Too Soon

One of the biggest mistakes I see is that moms give up too early.

They post for two weeks and assume it isn’t working.

They don’t get immediate results and decide they’re not cut out for this.

They feel awkward - or ‘cringe’ as my kids would say.

Or they switch directions before giving their efforts enough time to gain momentum.

Seeds don’t grow overnight.

They need to be planted, watered, and given time.

Your business is no different.

The Hardest Moments Often Come Right Before Success

I’ve learned something important over the years.

Often, when things feel the most difficult, you are closer than you think.

Uncertainty. Frustration. Doubts.

Sometimes those moments are a test.

How badly do you want this?

Will you keep going when it feels uncomfortable?

Will you trust that your work is taking root, even when you can’t yet see the results?

You Already Have What It Takes

You do not need permission.

You do not need to be more talented.

You do not need to have everything figured out.

You simply need to decide.

Decide that your voice matters.

Decide that your experiences have value.

Decide that you are willing to take imperfect action.

The mindset shift that changed everything for me

Years ago, I took a course from that introduced me to a simple but powerful idea: if you use your skills to help people, you position yourself completely differently online.

That idea stuck with me.

And honestly? I think it shaped the way I’ve approached business and content ever since.

Because over the years, I’ve noticed something:

The creators who are constantly focused on:
“What’s in it for me?”
“How fast can I grow?”
“How do I make money quickly?”

…usually struggle to build something sustainable.

Meanwhile, the people who lead with service tend to build trust, community, opportunities, and yes — eventually income too.

I truly believe that when you focus on helping people, the money follows.

Not overnight.
Not magically.
But naturally.

Content creation is not just about influence

I think a lot of people misunderstand what being a creator actually is.

It’s not just:

• Selling products

• Posting affiliate links

• Chasing views

• Going viral

At its core, great content creation is about contribution.

You are giving people:

• Information

• Inspiration

• Entertainment

• Connection

• Relief

• Encouragement

• Solutions

And that “help” can look very different depending on who you are.

I had a mom reach out to me recently and tell me she’s a comedian.

Some people might not immediately see that as “helping.”

I completely disagree.

Making people laugh helps people.

Helping someone smile after a hard day helps people.

Creating connection helps people.

Raising people’s spirits helps people.

Service does not only come in the form of tutorials and advice.

Start with this question:

Where in your life have you solved a problem that someone else is still struggling with?

That’s where your best content usually lives.

Maybe you:

• Got organized after years of chaos

• Learned how to meal prep

• Paid off debt

• Started running at 40

• Learned how to style curly hair

• Figured out sensory-friendly travel with kids

• Became great at finding budget-friendly meals

You don’t have to be the world’s leading expert.

You just need to be a few steps ahead of someone else.

I once heard someone say:

“There’s a past version of you out there that needs your help.”

That line never left me.

Because it’s true.

And here’s the part most people miss…

You do NOT have to already have the answer to create valuable content.

Sometimes the most powerful content comes from documenting the journey toward the answer.

For example:

• I hate the grout on my old kitchen counters, so I’m planning to document products that actually improve it.

• I’m trying to eat more protein, so I’m testing high-protein snacks and sharing what works for me.

I don’t have the final answers yet.

But the process itself is valuable.

Because there are thousands of people wondering the same things.

That’s the beauty of the creator economy right now.

You can help people through:

• expertise

• experimentation

• storytelling

• transparency

• documentation

You don’t have to arrive before you begin sharing.

Here’s an exercise for you

If you’re struggling to figure out what kind of content you should create, ask yourself this:

What would your friends and family call you for help with?

Remember the “Phone a Friend” lifeline from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

What topic would people use you as their lifeline for?

That question can unlock a lot.

Because often, the things that come naturally to us are the exact things we underestimate.

My biggest advice to creators right now

Stop asking:
“How do I go viral?”

Start asking:
“How can I genuinely help people?”

That shift changes everything.

Because mission-based content creates:

• stronger communities

• deeper trust

• more meaningful businesses

• more sustainable growth

And honestly?

It makes content creation feel a whole lot better too.

So here’s your homework:

List #1:

Things you’ve already achieved, solved, learned, or figured out that could help someone else. Think: past version of you.

List #2:

Things you are currently trying to improve, learn, or solve that you could document publicly.

Somewhere in those two lists is the foundation of your content strategy.
