Every morning, my alarm goes off before the sun has fully decided to rise. Some days I win the battle immediately. Other days, I stare at the ceiling wondering why I ever thought waking up this early was a good idea.

Then I remember.

I prayed for this.

I prayed for an opportunity. I prayed for growth. I prayed for a chance to build a career that would stretch me beyond what I already knew.

So now, when the bus is noisy, when I have to stand because there are no seats left, when the journey feels longer than usual, I remind myself that I signed up for this version of my life. Not because it’s easy, but because it’s leading me somewhere.

Lately, I’ve found myself stepping into a world that feels completely different from the one I know.

For 2 years, I’ve spoken the language of journalism. Stories. Interviews. Deadlines. News angles. Human interest. Finding the truth and telling it well.

Now, I’m learning the language of innovation.

Technology.

Science.

Engineering.

Ideas that can change communities.

At times, it feels like being the new kid in class all over again. Everyone seems fluent in conversations I’m still trying to understand. There are moments when I question whether I know enough. Moments when I wonder if I’ll ever fully catch up.

But maybe growth isn’t about already knowing.

Maybe it’s about being willing to learn.

Every day here teaches me something new not just about communication, but about myself. I’m learning how to adapt. How to ask better questions. How to write differently. How to translate complex ideas into stories that people can actually connect with.

Most importantly, I’m learning that being uncomfortable is often a sign that you’re expanding.

Outside of work, life hasn’t slowed down.

There are still assignments waiting for me. Deadlines. Responsibilities. The endless balancing act of trying to build a future while surviving the present.

And if I’m being completely honest, this season can feel lonely.

I’m far from the people I usually lean on. I don’t really have my circle here yet. No familiar faces waiting around every corner.

But strangely enough, I’ve discovered a different kind of comfort.

The mountains.

The quiet mornings.

The fresh air.

The beauty of a place that reminds me that life doesn’t always need to move loudly to move forward.

There is peace here.

The people have been kind. The environment has been welcoming. And slowly, this unfamiliar place is beginning to feel a little less unfamiliar.

I think that’s what this season is teaching me.

Not every chapter starts with confidence.

Some chapters start with uncertainty.

With bus rides.

With early mornings.

With learning a new language professionally and personally.

With showing up before you feel ready.

And maybe that’s enough.

Maybe success isn’t always the big moment we imagine.

Maybe it’s choosing to wake up when the alarm rings.

Choosing to learn when you feel behind.

Choosing to keep going when nobody is clapping yet.

For now, that’s what I’m doing.

At least, that’s what I believed.

I thought graduation would feel like an arrival. Instead, it felt like standing at the beginning of another journey with no clear map.

Applications were sent. Emails were checked obsessively. Hope would rise and fall depending on whether my phone rang or stayed silent.

The waiting season humbled me.

Not because I doubted my abilities, but because I was forced to confront a difficult truth: sometimes life doesn’t move according to our timelines.

We live in a world that celebrates visible success. The promotions. The announcements. The milestones. The moments that make for great social media posts.

But very few people talk about the space in between.

The uncertainty.

The quiet mornings where you’re wondering whether your efforts are enough.

The moments where you’re questioning whether your dreams are delayed or simply being prepared.

What I’ve learned is that waiting is not the same as standing still.

Even when it feels like nothing is happening, something is happening within you.

Patience is being developed.

Character is being built.

Perspective is being reshaped.

And sometimes, when an opportunity finally arrives, it doesn’t look exactly like the version you created in your head.

Mine didn’t.

But instead of asking, “Why isn’t this more?” I started asking, “What can this teach me?”

The older I get, the more I realise that not every season is meant for arrival. Some seasons are meant for preparation.

Looking back, I don’t think the biggest blessing was the opportunity itself.

I think the blessing was learning how to remain hopeful while things were still uncertain.

Learning how to keep showing up.

Learning how to celebrate progress, even when it doesn’t look exactly how I imagined.

And perhaps that’s what adulthood is: understanding that life is not made up only of breakthroughs. It’s also made up of the moments that prepare us for them.

Realising that some of the things I called personality traits were actually defence mechanisms.

Realising that I had spent so much time trying to be understood by others that I had never taken the time to understand myself.

That kind of realisation changes you.

Not overnight.

Not dramatically.

But slowly.

You begin noticing how often you shrink yourself to make other people comfortable.

You begin noticing how much of your identity has been built around expectations that were never yours to carry.

You begin noticing the difference between who you are and who you’ve been performing as.

And once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

The breakdown happens when the mask becomes too heavy.

When pretending you’re okay becomes more exhausting than admitting you’re not.

When constantly being available starts to feel like abandonment of yourself.

When the noise around you becomes so loud that you can no longer hear your own voice.

That is usually where the real work begins.

Not the kind of work that earns applause.

The kind nobody witnesses.

The conversations you have with yourself at midnight.

The boundaries you finally decide to set.

The apologies you stop waiting for.

The people you stop chasing.

The peace you choose instead of proving a point.

There is something incredibly lonely about becoming self-aware.

You notice how fear has influenced some of your decisions.

You notice how often you seek validation.

You notice the ways you’ve betrayed yourself to avoid disappointing others.

At least, that’s the version of me most people know.

The interviews.

The “I’m so excited to share this” posts.

The moments where I look like I have figured life out.

And honestly?

Sometimes I look at my own Instagram and think,

“Girl, you really are doing a lot.” 😭

But there’s something social media doesn’t show very well.

What happens when the girl who is always busy finally goes quiet?

I don’t think people realise how much noise I carry

I’m used to having something to do.

If I don’t have an assignment, I’m looking for an opportunity.

If I don’t have an opportunity, I’m creating content.

If I’m not creating content, I’m thinking about what I should create next.

If I’m not writing, I’m thinking about what I should write.

And if I’m not doing any of those things, I’m probably convincing myself that I should be doing something.

It’s exhausting.

But sometimes I think I’ve become so comfortable with being busy that I don’t know what to do when life becomes quiet.

Because quiet gives you time to think.

And thinking?

That’s dangerous. 😭

When I’m busy, I don’t have to think too much about the things that scare me.

I don’t have to think about the applications I never got responses from.

I don’t have to think about the opportunities I really wanted.

I don’t have to think about whether I’m where I thought I’d be by now.

I don’t have to think about the future.

I can just keep moving.

And sometimes, moving feels easier than feeling.

The internet knows a version of me

There is a version of me that exists online.

She’s confident.

She’s ambitious.

She’s always outside.

She’s always doing something interesting.

She’s building her career.

She’s meeting people.

She’s writing.

She’s creating.

She’s chasing her dreams.

And I love that girl.

I really do.

But she’s not the whole story.

There is another version of me.

The one who closes her laptop and just stares at the ceiling.

The one who sometimes wonders if she’s doing enough.

The one who gets excited about an opportunity and then quietly prepares herself for rejection because she’s been disappointed before.

The one who can encourage everyone else while sometimes struggling to encourage herself.

The one who says, “I’m fine,” because explaining everything feels like too much work.

That girl exists too.

And maybe she deserves to be seen.

Sometimes I disappear because I need to hear myself think

I’ve realised something about myself.

When life gets overwhelming, I don’t always know how to say:

“I need a break.”

Instead, I just become quiet.

I post less.

I answer messages later.

I stop explaining what I’m doing.

I spend more time alone.

And from the outside, someone might think I’ve disappeared.

Maybe I have.

But not because I’ve stopped dreaming.

Not because I’ve given up.

Sometimes I disappear because I’m trying to find myself underneath everything I’m trying to become.

There is a difference.

I am ambitious, but I am also tired

I think young people are expected to be ambitious in a very specific way.

We have to build personal brands.

Network.

Create content.

Have a portfolio.

Apply for jobs.

Attend events.

Learn new skills.

Be productive.

Be financially independent.

Have goals.

Have a five-year plan.

And somehow look good while doing all of it.

Sometimes I just want to say:

Can we breathe? 😩

Because I’m ambitious.

I want the career.

I want the opportunities.

I want to travel.

I want to create.

I want my name to mean something.

I want to become the woman I’ve imagined.

But I also want to have days where I do absolutely nothing without feeling guilty about it.

I want to rest without wondering whether someone else is getting ahead.

I want to be proud of myself without immediately asking,

“What’s next?”

Maybe going quiet isn’t falling behind

I’ve spent so much time thinking that if I’m not moving, I’m falling behind.

But maybe that’s not true.

Maybe sometimes the most productive thing you can do is pause.

Maybe silence isn’t emptiness.

Maybe it’s where you hear yourself again.

Maybe the girl who goes quiet isn’t lost.

Maybe she’s just tired of performing strength for everyone else.

Maybe she needs a moment where nobody expects anything from her.

No post.

No interview.

No deadline.

No application.

No explanation.

Just her.

And honestly?

I’m learning to be okay with that.

So, if you notice me being quiet…

Don’t assume I’ve stopped.

I’m probably thinking.

Writing.

Resting.

Rebuilding.

Figuring something out.

Or maybe I’m simply having a day where I don’t feel like being perceived.

And I don’t have to be busy every second to be becoming someone.

And she’s still figuring things out.

For the girls who are always doing something, always becoming something, and sometimes just need permission to be.

Everyone tells you university is the beginning of your career. Nobody really tells you what happens when you graduate and the beginning doesn’t feel like a beginning at all.

There is a strange kind of silence that comes after graduation.

At university, everyone keeps asking you the same question:

“What are you going to do when you graduate?”

You spend years preparing for the answer.

You attend lectures. You write assignments. You study for tests. You complete practicals. You submit applications. You build your CV. You tell yourself that once you have that qualification in your hands, things will finally start making sense.

Then graduation comes.

You take the pictures.

You wear the gown.

You smile.

You celebrate.

And then you go home.

And suddenly, nobody is giving you a deadline.

Nobody is telling you what comes next.

You are just expected to know.

The reality nobody prepares you for

I think one of the hardest parts of graduating is realizing that education gives you a qualification, but it does not automatically give you a place in the world.

You can graduate with good marks and still struggle to find work.

You can have internships, volunteer experience and a portfolio and still receive rejection after rejection.

You can apply for a position you genuinely believe you are qualified for, only to receive silence.

And eventually, you start questioning things that have nothing to do with the application.

Maybe I’m not good enough.

Maybe I chose the wrong career.

Maybe everyone else is moving forward except me.

The hardest part is watching people around you seemingly figure everything out.

Someone gets an internship.

Someone gets their first job.

Someone moves to another city.

Someone starts a business.

Someone gets married.

Someone posts their first big achievement.

And suddenly your social media feed becomes a timeline of everyone else’s progress.

You begin measuring your life against announcements.

But nobody posts the unanswered applications.

Nobody posts the interview they didn’t get.

Nobody posts the rejection email.

Nobody posts the days they spent wondering whether they were falling behind.

University prepared us for work. Did it prepare us for waiting?

This is something I have been thinking about a lot.

University teaches you how to meet deadlines.

How to research.

How to write.

How to present.

How to work with people.

How to survive pressure.

But what prepares you for waiting?

Waiting for an email.

Waiting for an opportunity.

Waiting for someone to recognise your potential.

Waiting for your career to finally resemble the picture you had in your head when you were still a student.

There is no lecture for that.

And waiting can be uncomfortable because it makes you question whether you are actually progressing.

Sometimes progress is invisible.

You are sending applications.

You are improving your CV.

You are learning a new skill.

You are meeting people.

You are writing.

You are creating.

You are trying again.

From the outside, it might look like nothing is happening.

But something is.

You are becoming more prepared for the life you keep asking for.

Maybe we were given the wrong timeline

We grew up with timelines.

Finish school.

Go to university.

Graduate.

Get a job.

Build a career.

Become financially independent.

Move out.

And somehow, we are expected to complete all of this in the correct order.

But life doesn’t work like a syllabus.

Some people get their dream job at 22.

Some get it at 27.

Some change careers at 30.

Some discover what they actually want after years of doing something completely different.

And some people spend their twenties simply trying to survive long enough to discover who they are.

None of those lives are necessarily failures.

They are just different timelines.

Perhaps the problem isn’t that adulthood is harder.

Perhaps we were simply never taught how uncertain it would be.

I am learning not to confuse waiting with failing

This is probably the hardest lesson for me.

There are days when I feel like I should be further.

Days when I look at my qualifications and experience and wonder why I haven’t reached the place I imagined I would be by now.

But I am slowly learning that being in-between does not mean being stuck.

There is a version of me that existed at university who believed graduation would answer everything.

She thought the qualification would make her feel certain.

It didn’t.

Instead, graduation introduced her to another set of questions.

Who am I outside of being a student?

What kind of career do I actually want?

What happens when I don’t get the opportunities I worked for?

How do I keep believing in myself when nobody else seems to be choosing me yet?

Maybe those questions are adulthood.

Maybe growing up isn’t about finally knowing who you are.

Maybe it is about becoming comfortable with the fact that you are still becoming.

To the graduate who feels behind

If you graduated and things haven’t happened as quickly as you imagined, I hope you know this:

Your qualification was not a promise that everything would happen immediately.

It was a foundation.

Your first job is not a measurement of your intelligence.

Your current salary is not a measurement of your potential.

Your unanswered applications are not a measurement of your worth.

And someone else’s timeline is not evidence that yours is wrong.

You are allowed to be proud of how far you’ve come while still wanting more.

You are allowed to be ambitious and tired at the same time.

You are allowed to admit that this season is difficult without believing that it will last forever.

Maybe adulthood feels harder because, for the first time, nobody is handing us the next chapter.

We have to write it ourselves.

And maybe that is the frightening part.

But perhaps it is also the beautiful part.

Because for the first time, the story is truly ours to write.

Even then, I don’t think anyone has ever known all of me.

He is twenty-three. I am twenty-two.

People often ask us what the secret is.

How have we lasted this long?

The truth is not glamorous.

There is no secret formula. No perfect relationship handbook. No magical quote that guarantees forever.

There is simply the daily decision to stay.

To talk when it would be easier to walk away.

To fix problems instead of feeding them.

To choose understanding over pride.

To remember that it is not you against me—it is us against the problem.

We have had people try to come between us. Boys. Girls. Opinions. Expectations. Advice from people who only know fragments of our story. Yet none of those things have ever been stronger than our willingness to fight for each other.

And yes, we are both jealous sometimes.

Not because we own each other, but because we care deeply about what we have built. Because when you spend years growing alongside someone, you begin to understand how rare genuine connection really is.

The older I get, the more I realize that love is not measured by grand gestures.

If I am being honest, my journalism journey and my journey into adulthood have happened at the same time. Sometimes it feels impossible to separate the two.

I fell in love with journalism because I loved stories. I loved the idea that ordinary people carried extraordinary experiences. I loved asking questions and listening carefully to answers. I loved discovering that a single conversation could change the way someone sees the world.

What I did not realize was that journalism would also force me to learn my own story.

University taught me theories, ethics, media law, and reporting skills. But adulthood taught me things that no lecture could.

It taught me how to handle rejection.

The emails that never received a response.

The internships I wanted but didn’t get.

The opportunities that seemed perfect but somehow slipped away.

At first, every rejection felt personal. I questioned my abilities and wondered whether I was talented enough to make it in the industry. But over time, I learned that rejection is not always a reflection of your worth. Sometimes it is simply part of the journey.

Journalism also taught me resilience.

You learn quickly that stories do not always go according to plan. Interviews get cancelled. Sources stop responding. Deadlines arrive whether you feel ready or not.

Adulthood works the same way.

Plans change. People leave. Expectations shift. Life rarely follows the timeline you imagined for yourself.

The older I get, the more I realize that growing up is less about having all the answers and more about learning how to navigate uncertainty.

There are days when I feel confident about my future and days when I wonder whether I am moving fast enough. Social media makes it easy to compare timelines. Someone is getting married. Someone is buying a car. Someone is landing their dream job.

Meanwhile, I am learning that success is not always loud.

Sometimes success is submitting another application even after hearing “no.”

Sometimes success is showing up when motivation is nowhere to be found.

Sometimes success is believing in yourself on days when nobody else seems to notice your efforts.

One of the most beautiful lessons journalism has given me is empathy.

Every person is fighting a battle that cannot be understood from a headline alone.

The same applies to ourselves.

We are often too quick to judge our progress because we compare our behind-the-scenes moments to other people’s highlights. Yet growth is usually happening in the quiet moments—in the applications we send, the skills we learn, the risks we take, and the courage it takes to keep going.

At 22, I cannot claim to have adulthood figured out.

I am still learning how to balance ambition with patience. I am still learning how to trust the process. I am still learning that becoming the person you want to be takes time.

But perhaps that is the point.

Maybe adulthood is not a destination we arrive at one day.

Maybe it is a series of lessons, mistakes, victories, and second chances that slowly shape us into who we are meant to become.

And maybe journalism is not just the study of other people’s stories.

Maybe it is also the process of understanding our own.

So, to those who know me, to those who don’t, and to the woman I am becoming: thank you for being part of the story.

The story is still being written.

The truth is, my life has never been easy.

Not because I am looking for sympathy, but because life has a way of testing us before it introduces us to who we are meant to become.

I have experienced disappointment.

Moments where I wondered if all the sacrifices would eventually be worth it.

Moments where I felt invisible despite trying so hard to be seen.

Yet somehow, I am still here.

And today, I want to write a love letter not just to one person, but to every person and every experience that has shaped me.

To the Woman in the Mirror

Dear Me,

I know how hard this journey has been.

I know about the tears you never posted online.

I know about the opportunities that didn’t work out.

I know about the applications you sent and never heard back from.

I know about the moments when people assumed you were okay simply because you smiled.

I know.

And because I know, I need you to hear this:

You are doing better than you think.

You have survived days you thought would break you.

You have continued to move forward even when fear sat heavily in your chest.

You have chosen courage over comfort more times than anyone realizes.

People often see the destination.

They rarely see the journey.

They see confidence.

They do not see the self-doubt.

They see ambition.

They do not see the anxiety.

They see achievements.

They do not see the sleepless nights.

You have spent so much of your life trying to prove yourself.

Maybe it’s time you stop proving and start believing.

Believe that you are enough.

Believe that your dreams are valid.

Believe that your story matters.

Believe that your purpose is bigger than your current circumstances.

You are not becoming someone.

You already are someone.

And she is worth loving.

To Those Who Truly See Me

One of the hardest things in life is realizing that being surrounded by people and being understood are two completely different things.

There are people who know my name.

There are people who know my story.

And then there are people who know my heart.

Not everyone belongs in the same category.

I have friends who genuinely understand me.

Friends who know when I am struggling, even when I pretend everything is okay.

Friends who have listened to my dreams, encouraged me when I doubted myself, and reminded me of who I am when I forgot.

These friendships are precious.

They are rare.

They are the kind of friendships that survive distance, challenges, misunderstandings, and time.

Then there are friendships built through proximity.

People I laugh with.

People I enjoy being around.

People I can share moments with.

The energy is good.

The vibes are good.

The memories are real.

But deep down, I know some of these friendships exist because our paths crossed through mutual friends or shared spaces.

And that’s okay.

Not every friendship is meant to carry the weight of your life.

Not every person is meant to know your deepest fears.

Some people are companions for a chapter.

Others become part of your entire story.

Both have value.

But as I’ve grown older, I have learned the importance of knowing the difference.

To the friends who have stood beside me during difficult seasons, thank you.

Thank you for seeing me beyond what I post.

Thank you for seeing me beyond my achievements.

Thank you for seeing me as a human being.

Your support has meant more than words can explain.

To My Family

Family is complicated.

It is beautiful.

It is imperfect.

It is human.

When people talk about family, they often speak about having one person they tell everything to.

I don’t have that.

I don’t have a single person who knows every chapter of my story.

Instead, I have pieces of support spread across different people.

My mother.

My father.

My uncle.

My grandmother.

My father’s brother.

My cousins.

Each of them has carried me differently.

Each of them has contributed to the person I am becoming.

Some through advice.

Some through encouragement.

Some through simply being present when I needed someone.

And then there have been moments where I had to carry myself.

Moments where the only person who fully understood what I was feeling was me.

Those moments taught me strength.

Not the loud kind.

The quiet kind.

The kind that wakes up and keeps going.

The kind that continues believing when there is no evidence that things will get better.

The kind that chooses hope.

I am grateful for every person who has played a role in my life.

Even when we didn’t always understand each other.

Even when we disagreed.

Even when life became difficult.

Because love is not always perfect understanding.

Sometimes love is simply showing up.

To My Little Sister

My sweet girl,

You are still so young.

You probably don’t understand the battles I fight.

You probably don’t understand why I work so hard.

You probably don’t understand why I dream so big.

But one day you will.

One day you will realize that every step I took was not only for me.

It was for you too.

I want you to grow up knowing that where you come from does not determine where you can go.

I want you to know that your dreams matter.

I want you to know that your voice matters.

I want you to know that you do not have to become smaller to make other people comfortable.

Most importantly, I want you to know that strength is not about pretending everything is okay.

Strength is about continuing despite the challenges.

If my journey teaches you anything, let it teach you that difficult beginnings can still lead to beautiful destinations.

To Those Who Misunderstand Me

I have spent years wishing people would understand me.

Wishing they would understand why I care so deeply.

Why I dream so loudly.

Why I refuse to settle.

Why I continue chasing opportunities that others cannot always see.

But I have learned something important.

Not everyone is supposed to understand me.

And that’s okay.

People can only meet you from the level of understanding they have.

Some will misunderstand your ambition.

Some will misunderstand your boundaries.

Some will misunderstand your choices.

Some will misunderstand your silence.

That does not make you wrong.

It simply makes you different.

And being different has never been a bad thing.
