• Fun Facts:

  • Frank Henenlotter walked into a meeting with producer James Glickenhaus trying to sell a totally different movie. When Glickenhaus asked what else he had, Henenlotter started inventing a Frankenstein story about working girls right there on the spot. He worked his way through Frankenprostitute, Frankenslut, and Frankenwhore before finally landing on Frankenhooker. Later, he admitted that conversation basically gave him the first 45 minutes of the movie.

  • The MPAA originally gave Frankenhooker an X rating. Henenlotter said then chairman Richard Heffner called the production and announced they had earned the first “S” rating. When someone asked if that meant “S for sex,” Heffner reportedly clarified: “S for shit.” James Glickenhaus was pissed enough to complain about the remark publicly while appealing the rating. An edited version eventually got the R.

  • Some VHS copies of Frankenhooker came in a battery-powered box that squawked “Wanna date?” when someone pressed a button on the cover, which is exactly the kind of stupidly perfect gimmick video stores were built for. Henenlotter joked that the gimmick might have sold the movie all by itself. Shapiro-Glickenhaus even kept a roughly seven-foot version of the talking box in their office.

  • Bill Murray was mixing Quick Change at the same facility where Henenlotter was working on Frankenhooker, and started watching reels of the movie at night. Shapiro-Glickenhaus tried to squeeze a promotional quote out of him, which embarrassed Henenlotter so much he felt he had to apologize. Murray wasn’t bothered. When they crossed paths again in an elevator, he volunteered the line that became part of the movie’s cult legend: “If you only see one movie this year, it should be Frankenhooker.”

I have a strange, sordid past with Frankenhooker. It started when I was 10 or 11, wandering the horror section at our local video store, looking at movies I wanted to see but was never allowed to rent. Then… Frankenhooker stopped me dead in my tracks. I knew what a hooker was because some kid at recess had called somebody’s mom one, so the title killed me. I remember thinking, “Wow, this has to be horrible. I must see it.” There was no way I was going to try suggesting it to my parents, so I waited.

A couple years later, Cinemax finally delivered. I was around 13 when I caught it very late, and while I appreciated some of the comedy, I was also a hormonal pubescent nightmare sneaking Skinemax. I was there for one thing: boobs. Everything else registered as cheap late-night cable fodder while I waited for the next pair of giant headlights to enter the frame.

When I got older and dug deeper into cult horror, I gave it another chance. It was funny, weird, schlocky, and definitely more entertaining than I remembered, but still more of a novelty than anything I considered truly special. By then I was also a certified gorehound looking for horror movies that pushed the limits of taste and decency, and for something called Frankenhooker, it felt surprisingly tame. Even its biggest violence is more interested in making you laugh than making you squirm, so I liked it, filed it away, and kept moving.

Revisiting it now, I realized I had been looking at it all wrong. Frankenhooker isn’t really a horror-comedy like Henenlotter’s Basket Case. It’s comedy-horror. The movie lets you know exactly what it is within minutes. Jeffrey Franken is introduced performing tests on a brain with a single eyeball protruding from it. Then somebody enters the frame and asks for the ketchup. It seems Jeffrey has a neuroscience operation set up in his kitchen during a family barbecue, and nobody seems alarmed. A minute later, someone needs his table to make the coleslaw. THE TABLE WITH THE BRAIN ON IT. Why is anyone eating at this barbecue?

The new 4K restoration made me realize how beautiful Frankenhooker really is. I first saw it on cable through an old 24” tube TV. In 4K, the clarity, lighting and wild use of color completely change the experience. There are genuinely gorgeous shots here, especially for a movie this cheap, and the production design gives Jeffrey’s homemade mad-scientist world so much more texture than its budget would suggest. The seams still show every so often, but this is the first time I’ve seen it in a format that truly lets me see how well it was shot.

I noticed a few other things too. Lorinz was turning Jeffrey’s grief and warped rationale into a character I still wanted to follow and Patty Mullen was seriously committing to the physical comedy. This production was finding ways to make the absurdity bigger than the money behind it. The logic gets a little flimsy, the budget gives itself away, and Jeffrey becomes harder to defend as his plan gets worse. But this time, those flaws didn’t feel like proof that Frankenhooker was falling short. This funny little schlock oddity had a lot more going on than I ever gave it credit for.

I decided to pick six of my favorites, added my own, and tagged the wonderful folks responsible.

1. Stephen Root

Stephen Root is a guy whose face makes me go, “Sweet! He’s in this,” every single time it appears on screen.

Milton from Office Space is the obvious one, stuck in the basement worrying about his red stapler while the company slowly forgets he exists. But then there’s O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Dodgeball, No Country for Old Men, Get Out. He can be pathetic, creepy, pissed off, or completely normal, and none of it feels like the same guy showing up again.

A lot of the time, Root isn’t even in the movie that much. I still remember him more than people with twice the screen time. He’s been doing that for decades.

2. Jon Bernthal

“Let me tell you somethin’.” The second I hear those words, I know whatever comes next is about to take over the scene, and sometimes the whole damn movie or show.

Bernthal always looks like something happened five minutes before he walked into a scene. Maybe he just got in a fight. Maybe he’s about to start one. Maybe someone said something mildly disrespectful in the parking lot and he just can’t shake it.

He has that energy in Fury, Sicario, The Wolf of Wall Street, Ford v Ferrari, and obviously as Frank Castle in The Punisher. Even when he barely has any screen time, I’m usually wishing we got another twenty minutes with him.

He can also play a complete asshole without turning into a cartoon. There’s always enough vulnerability underneath all the glaring and neck veins to keep me fully invested.

3. Laurence Fishburne

Laurence Fishburne had already been in Apocalypse Now before becoming Cowboy Curtis on Pee-wee’s Playhouse. Then came King of New York, Boyz n the Hood, Deep Cover, Event Horizon, The Matrix, and the John Wick movies.

That’s a hell of a career.

He’s also exactly who I want dealing with something completely ridiculous with a straight face. Send him onto a ship that disappeared for seven years and came back from Hell, or have him explain that humanity has been living inside a simulated prison, and I’m listening.

Even in a film as insanely bad as Megalopolis, he crushes. The movie gives him nonsense and he carries it like it matters.

4. Jeffrey Combs

Herbert West in Re-Animator alone would be enough to earn the pass. Combs spends that entire flick treating death like an irritating inconvenience everyone else is too stupid to understand. Then you get to From Beyond, The Frighteners, House on Haunted Hill, and his seemingly endless collection of Star Trek characters.

The idea may be insane, but his delivery never treats it that way. Even when his character is clearly the one person nobody should be trusting, I usually want to hear him out.

5. Gary Oldman

Two people in the comments picked Gary Oldman, which makes total sense. I’m not entirely convinced we’ve ever seen the real Gary Oldman.

He’s Dracula. He’s Drexl in True Romance. He’s Zorg in The Fifth Element. He’s Commissioner Gordon. He’s George Smiley. He’s also the guy screaming about Beethoven and chewing on pills while terrorizing everyone in Léon: The Professional.

Give him a role like George Smiley and he all but disappears. Give him a ridiculous haircut, a strange accent, and permission to go completely bonkers, and he’s just as good.

I’m fine with either version.

6. Bruce Campbell

Bruce Campbell may be the purest version of the automatic free pass. Honestly, he was almost my pick for the original Note. It was a really tough decision.

I don’t need the movie to look respectable. In fact, respectability might make me more suspicious.

Give me Ash Williams covered in blood and yelling at demons. Give me Elvis fighting a mummy in a nursing home in Bubba Ho-Tep. Give Campbell ten minutes in something bizarre where he gets to smirk, insult everyone, and make terrible situations comically worse. I will be more than satisfied.

Campbell is also the only person on this list I’ve actually met. I got to talk to him for about five minutes, and he was just as funny and awesome in person as you’d want Bruce Campbell to be.

7. Brad Dourif

My pick.

Brad Dourif barely beat Bruce Campbell for my original pick, which should tell you how much of a free pass this guy has with me.

He could’ve stopped after Billy Bibbit in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and still had one hell of a film debut. Instead we got Chucky, Gríma Wormtongue, Doc Cochran, Raymond in Blue Velvet, and one of my favorite horror performances ever as the Gemini Killer in The Exorcist III.

Those interrogation scenes alone bought him a lifetime pass. Hell, he could call me up and ask for a kidney and I’d have trouble saying no.

Dourif can be terrifying without doing much. His voice does a lot of the work, but so does that look he gives people like his brain is running several unpleasant calculations at once. Then he can turn around and be heartbreaking or genuinely funny.

I’ve watched some serious trash because Brad Dourif was in the cast, and I have no plans on stopping.

I could’ve kept going. A few other names in the comments were tough to leave out.

Who did we miss? Which actor can get you to watch a movie you would’ve skipped otherwise?

Before I had any real say in what I listened to, all I heard was whatever my parents put on. This was the mid-to-late ’80s, so Dire Straits, Talking Heads, Neil Young, and John Cougar Mellencamp were some of my first musical loves.

And I’m never dropping the Cougar. You can’t make me.

The First Music That Felt Like Mine

Movies were the first place I heard music outside my family’s collection or whatever was playing on the radio. I was obsessed with Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters” theme when I was very young, along with Huey Lewis and the News’ “The Power of Love” from Back to the Future. Years later I learned that the first song was basically stolen from the guy who wrote the second. Turns out I just liked Huey Lewis.

Then as I got a little older, movie scores started getting their gorgeous, grubby little hooks into me too.

One Christmas, when I was about ten, I got some Tower Records gift certificates. Back then, Tower gave you actual pieces of paper with serial numbers that some poor accountant was responsible for keeping track of. And it wasn’t normal paper. It was the kind of paper they printed diplomas on, so it felt extra fancy.

Those ornate, yet flimsy pieces of paper got me first CD: John Williams’ score for Jaws.

I was already obsessed with Jaws (and still am) so that CD got a lot of play. I would put it on in my room and pretend I was conducting the orchestra, playing out the movie’s most horrific moments in my head. My version was probably much more graphic than anything Spielberg actually showed.

If it wasn’t for John Williams’ work on Jaws, Star Wars, and the Indiana Jones movies, I don’t think I would’ve started listening to movie scores on their own, much less collecting them. Now Williams, Hans Zimmer, Alan Silvestri, Michael Giacchino, and Ludwig Göransson are all in regular rotation, and they will be until I die.

Tarantino Sent Me to Rasputin

By middle school, my taste had gotten a whole lot heavier. My friend Jeremy turned me into a borderline insane Metallica fan. I collected every album and played them far too much and far too loud, according to my parents and anyone living within a couple miles of our house.

Then, I saw Pulp Fiction at twelve. You know, the ideal age for heroin, hitmen, and accidental backseat executions. I was completely enamored with the music and went down to Rasputin, our local new-and-used record store, hoping I could find a reasonably priced copy.

Sure enough, there it was. For $8.99 used, it was mine.

“Miserlou” taught me I liked surf rock. “Jungle Boogie” and “Son of a Preacher Man” sent me toward ’60s and ’70s soul, funk, and R&B. The Jackie Brown soundtrack pushed that love even further. Al Green, Bill Withers, Bobby Womack, The Delfonics, and Minnie Riperton all remain firmly embedded in my playlists today.

Many of my favorite ‘90s soundtracks also had something I desperately miss: dialogue clips from the movies between the songs. Can we please bring those back?

I miss having the movie dialogue interrupt the album every few songs. Hearing Jules and Vincent argue about pork made the soundtrack feel like the movie was playing right there in my brain. It also helped me memorize the lines word for word, which I quoted relentlessly until my friends and family began to regret even knowing me.

The Grid Changed the Mix

I liked the original Tron when I was little, but I was an even bigger fan of the arcade game. They had one at the Century 21 theater where I grew up. It was one of those giant, amazing dome theaters with more than 900 seats that made going to the movies feel like an actual event. I spent plenty of time and money on that machine.

So when Tron: Legacy showed up, I was there opening weekend. I already enjoyed a few electronic songs, but this soundtrack by Daft Punk grabbed onto my soul.

I enjoyed the movie at the time, but have grown far less enthused with it over the years. The soundtrack never went anywhere. It’s been on my phone since I bought it on iTunes that weekend, and now I own it on vinyl too. Electronic music on an analog disc. That describes me pretty well.

I needed more, so I reached out to friends who knew infinitely more about electronic music than I did. Without that soundtrack, I probably never get into deadmau5 or The Glitch Mob, or dig much deeper into The Prodigy than the couple of songs I already knew from the late ’90s.

Beyond the Big Shifts

I’ve had smaller versions of this happen a lot too. Walk the Line sent me into a two-month Johnny Cash binge, which was weird because country has never been my thing. Cash was different. So were the other “Outlaw Country” legends from his era like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. I still can’t do the poppy radio country bullshit, but for a while there I was listening to almost nothing but Johnny Cash.

I love a lot of ’90s and 2000s hip-hop, mostly the classics. Wu-Tang, Tupac, Biggie, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest. That’s my speed. Newer hip-hop rarely landed for me until the Black Panther soundtrack introduced me to Kendrick Lamar. And now, in the words of one of the Bobs from Office Space, “I celebrate the guy’s entire catalogue.”

More recently, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse did something similar. That soundtrack has quite a few songs I probably would’ve dismissed if Miles Morales hadn’t introduced them to me first. Movies are still better at getting me out of my musical comfort zone than I am.

I’m sure another film will profoundly change my taste again. I can’t wait to find out which one.

The laugh gets out before your conscience has a chance to stop it, which usually makes you chuckle even harder. These seven scenes all made me wonder what the hell was wrong with me about half a second too late.

Many spoilers ahead, of course.

1. Burn After Reading (2008)

Brad Pitt has had plenty of funny, memorable moments in his career, but that split second Chad spends smiling inside Harry Pfarrer’s closet may be the funniest per capita.

Harry opens the door to find Chad crouched there. Chad gives him this nervous, hopeful grin, like maybe this whole breaking-and-entering thing is no biggie. Then Harry shoots him in the face before either of them gets a single word out.

The timing is vicious. You’re already laughing when the blood hits the wall, and there isn’t enough time to take it back. The Coens give Chad exactly one second to be the funniest person in the movie before removing him from it entirely.

2. Heathers (1988)

After Veronica and J.D. murder Kurt and Ram, they leave behind a fake suicide note that turns them into secret lovers. By the funeral, the adults have already turned two dead bullies into inspirational symbols of tolerance.

Kurt’s father gets up and proudly announces, “I love my dead gay son!” J.D. quietly wonders how he’d react if his son had “a limp wrist with a pulse.”

That’s the moment the scene reveals what it’s actually making fun of. The joke isn’t that everyone believes Kurt and Ram were gay. It’s that these adults discover unconditional acceptance only after it can’t cost them anything. Their compassion arrives loud, public, and safely too late.

3. Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)

Martin Blank spends his high school reunion dodging questions about his job. Then another assassin attacks him in the hallway, and Martin drives a complimentary pen through his throat.

The fight is fast and nasty, with “Mirror in the Bathroom” blasting while Martin and Felix beat the hell out of each other between the lockers. A few rooms away, everyone else is drinking, dancing, and comparing careers.

The first laugh comes when Martin ends the fight with the cheap pen he was handed earlier. Then Debi walks in just as he pulls it from Felix’s neck. After dodging questions about his job all night, Debi finally gets her answer while Martin kneels over a corpse.

4. Barbarian (2022)

Tess finds a hidden room with a filthy mattress, a bucket, a video camera, and a bloody handprint on the wall. She gets the hell out of there convinced something horrific happened in that basement.

AJ finds the same room and immediately pulls out a tape measure.

I lose it the second he starts measuring the walls. The house has become a financial disaster for him, so even this obvious nightmare gets filtered through resale value.

Justin Long plays AJ’s relief completely straight. For one glorious second, the hidden torture room is not a warning at all. It’s the first good news he’s had all day.

5. American Psycho (2000)

Patrick Bateman has covered the floor, put on a raincoat, and positioned Paul Allen exactly where he wants him. Before swinging the axe, however, he needs to finish explaining Huey Lewis and the News.

He dances around the apartment while delivering his prepared thoughts on the band’s artistic development. By the time he raises the axe, Patrick seems more excited about his music criticism than the murder he’s been planning.

It gets me every time. Paul is too drunk to realize he’s even with Bateman, while Patrick uses the murder to finally get one over on the guy with the better business card and the Dorsia reservation.

6. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

By the dinner scene, Sally has already been chased, beaten, mocked, and screamed herself nearly hoarse. Then the family decides Grandpa should get to kill her.

They bend her over a bucket, put the hammer in his hand, and start cheering for the legendary slaughterhouse killer to show everyone he’s still got it. Grandpa can barely lift the thing, let alone land a clean hit on Sally.

Everyone starts yelling over who should take the hammer, and the scene turns into a family argument about why Grandpa can’t finish the job. I laugh every time, then Sally screams again and I feel like an asshole.

7. Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019)

Three members of the Manson Family enter Rick Dalton’s house expecting to butcher everyone inside. Instead, they find Cliff Booth high on acid, his loyal dog Brandy waiting for a command, and a very heavy can of dog food.

From there, the violence keeps finding new ways to get more ridiculous. Brandy mauls Tex, Cliff smashes Katie’s face into anything close enough to reach, and Sadie staggers into Rick’s pool shrieking before he torches her with the flamethrower from The 14 Fists of McCluskey.

I know exactly who these people are and what they came there to do. By the time Rick walks out with that flamethrower, I’m not horrified. I’m cheering.

Some of the best scenes get the laugh out of you first, then leave you to explain yourself afterward.

  • The same year that the Simpsons debuted on The Tracey Ullman Show, and two years before they got their own series, Matt Groening wrote Blood Diner’s poster tagline: “First they greet you, then they eat you.” Bill Morrison, later a defining artist behind Simpsons comics and merchandise, painted the artwork. It was one of the earliest professional collaborations between Groening and Morrison.

  • Blood Diner began as an official sequel to Herschell Gordon Lewis’s Blood Feast. The surviving screenplay is titled Blood Diner (Blood Feast II), brings back Fuad Ramses, and once again revolves around Ishtar. When the sequel idea was dropped, Fuad became Uncle Anwar, Ishtar became Sheetar, and the movie only vaguely remembered its groundbreaking relative.

  • Jackie Kong has said the movie played internationally and was dubbed into five languages, but distributors regularly assumed its director was a man until they met her. A woman directing something this loud, bloody, juvenile, and aggressively tasteless apparently didn’t fit the industry’s expectations, even though Kong knew exactly what kind of film she was making.

  • In 2016, Lionsgate revived Vestron Video as a collector-focused Blu-ray label, with Blood Diner launching the series alongside Chopping Mall. The release included a new transfer, Jackie Kong commentary, a feature-length making-of documentary, archival interviews, trailers, and TV spots. A movie once passed around on aging tapes suddenly got the deluxe treatment.

I’d never heard of Blood Diner until covered it on Tales from the Tape last October. Intrigued, I immediately added it to my Letterboxd watchlist. Eventually, I put it in the Case File poll, and my wonderful paid subscribers pushed it to the front of the line. Within minutes, I understood why the people who love this movie really love it.

It opens with a warning that its “mutilations, bodily dismemberments, and cannibal rituals were performed by seasoned professionals” and should not be attempted at home. Then we enter an innocent 1960s suburban home, where two boys play with toys as the radio reports on the “Happy Times All-Girls Glee Club slaying.” The killer, last seen with “a meat cleaver in one hand and his genitals in the other,” approaches bloodied and hacks through the front door like Michael Myers. The terrified boys suddenly recognize him, yell “Uncle Anwar!” and greet him like a beloved relative just dropping by for dinner. That snap from home-invasion terror to cheerful family reunion tells you exactly how Blood Diner plans to operate.

Twenty years later, the boys dig up Uncle Anwar’s talking brain and begin harvesting body parts through their “vegetarian” restaurant to resurrect the Lumerian goddess Sheetar. The premise is ridiculous, but the movie gives its mythology far more attention than many respectable productions give their plots. Anwar has recipes, mandatory ingredients, ritual instructions, and a five-million-year-old feast to prepare. Blood Diner may lack plenty of conventional filmmaking virtues, but lore building is not one of them.

What surprised me most was how consistently the comedy landed. This movie is obviously cheap, and some performances barely resemble what anyone would call “acting,” but the bits are funny on purpose. The hard cuts, cartoon violence, terrible puns taken to their most literal extreme, and total commitment to every absurd situation kept making me laugh. I wasn’t laughing ironically because the movie wasaccidentally making an ass of itself. It was actually really funny.

Seeing Jackie Kong’s name in the credits, I assumed the director was a man, and the movie only reinforced that assumption. Blood Diner is packed with topless women, locker-room sex jokes, pro wrestling, projectile vomiting, and enough severed body parts to stock several other horror films. It also has plenty of insane, graphic violence but with the emotional maturity of a Looney Tunes bit. It’s proudly, deliberately classless in a way I associate with a guy gleefully cramming every cheap thrill he can into one movie.

Then I learned Jackie Kong was a woman, and I was pleasantly surprised. She took a script developed as Blood Feast II and deliberately pushed it toward broader comedy, bigger gore, and a more outrageous tone. What I first read as the unchecked instincts of some male exploitation director was actually Kong pushing the envelope as far as it could go, like a splatter-comedy explorer sailing toward the horizon to see if there really was an edge to the world.

Blood Diner arrived in 1987, the same year as Evil Dead II, but it has little interest in delivering the frightening half of horror-comedy. It plays more like a filthy B-sex comedy built around cannibalism and splatter effects. I totally get why it found its people through video stores, cult recommendations, and passed-around tapes instead of broad appeal. Figuring out why Blood Diner’s tawdriness, bad taste, and gleeful brutality work so well, while a few attempts to offend land with more ugliness than humor, is where this case starts getting interesting.

These are scenes a cleaner movie might’ve cut to protect the tone, the runtime, or everyone’s dignity. Thankfully, against every sensible editorial instinct, they lived.

At least one clip is NSFW. A couple more are spiritually unsafe. Light spoilers ahead. Poor judgment will be celebrated.

1. Paulie’s Robot — Rocky IV (1985)

Cuttable offense: a movie with almost no room for actual dialogue somehow has time for Paulie’s robot girlfriend.

Rocky IV is barely a movie in the traditional sense. It’s a 90-minute blast of training montages, James Brown, Cold War pageantry, and weaponized masculinity. It has zero time for normal human behavior.

So, of course, Rocky gives Paulie a robot for his birthday.

Not as a one-shot gag, either. The robot comes back with a female voice, serves Paulie beer, and gets introduced to Apollo as “my girl.”

The best argument for cutting it is that Stallone eventually did. In 2021, he released Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago, an “Ultimate Director’s Cut” that runs only two minutes longer than the theatrical version and removes the robot entirely. It’s tighter, more dramatic, and technically better.

Unfortunately, the real ones among us need the robot.

2. The VR File Search — Disclosure (1994)

Cuttable offense: a workplace sex thriller suddenly becomes a haunted screensaver.

For most of Disclosure, Michael Douglas is trapped in a corporate nightmare of sexual politics, office power games, and legal paranoia. Then the movie decides the best way to retrieve important evidence is to launch him into virtual reality like a divorced dad got trapped inside a corporate training CD-ROM.

It is wildly and hilariously unnecessary.

The scene wants to make office technology feel futuristic, dangerous, maybe even seductive. Instead, it turns basic computer work into a theme-park ride for middle managers.

The paranoia works without all this. Deleted files, blocked access, a company quietly burying the truth. Disclosure looks at that and says, “Put him in the helmet.”

I respect the stupidity. Bad tech ages better when it swings this hard.

3. Vera Gets Upgraded — Superman III (1983)

Cuttable offense: a goofy Superman sequel suddenly traumatizes every child in the room.

Superman III is mostly remembered as the one where Richard Pryor hacks capitalism, synthetic Kryptonite turns Superman into a barfly with heat vision, and neither is the strangest thing in it. It’s silly, uneven, and nowhere near as serious as it occasionally thinks it is.

Then Vera, the villain’s icy sister, gets pulled into the supercomputer.

It abruptly stops being a superhero comedy and turns into industrial body horror. Metal clamps her face. Wires swallow her skin. Her eyes go dead. The whole thing feels like somebody smuggled a nightmare into a matinee and nobody caught it until the children were already crying.

Should it have been cut? Probably. It’s too scary for the movie around it and too nasty to pass as superhero hijinks.

Thank God it stayed. A bad Superman sequel accidentally opened the door to hell for ninety seconds, and accidentally became more interesting.

4. Death Tries an Accent — Meet Joe Black (1998)

Cuttable offense: a solemn romantic fantasy pauses so Brad Pitt’s Death can try patois in a hospital.

Meet Joe Black is long, glossy, expensive, and extremely committed to being about love, mortality, and Brad Pitt glowing like a marble statue somebody taught to blink.

Then Death meets a terminally ill Jamaican woman at the hospital and starts talking to her in patois.

The scene is aiming for tenderness. There is a real idea buried in it: Death recognizing someone who understands him better than the rich folk floating around the rest of the movie. On paper, that could work.

On screen, it is impossible to watch without your soul briefly leaving your body. It is sincere, awkward, questionable, and so far outside the movie’s polished romantic mood that it feels like the film briefly wandered into traffic.

Does this survive a sensible edit? Absolutely not.

Am I glad this three-hour meditation on death also contains Brad Pitt doing that? Unfortunately, yes.

5. Gymnastics vs. Velociraptor — The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

Cuttable offense: a dinosaur survival sequel briefly defeats a velociraptor with middle-school gymnastics.

The Lost World is darker, meaner, and more chaotic than the first Jurassic Park. People get ripped apart in the tall grass. A T. rex rampages through San Diego. Spielberg is clearly having fun turning the wonder machine into a meat grinder.

Then Ian Malcolm’s daughter sees a set of uneven bars and decides this is her moment.

The velociraptor closes in, death is seconds away, and suddenly the movie becomes a gym-class revenge fantasy. Kelly turns certain doom into a highlight reel and sends the raptor through glass while Spielberg asks everyone to keep a straight face.

Should it have been cut? Almost certainly. It’s stupid in a way the movie cannot fully defend.

Am I glad it survived? Absolutely. It’s stupid, but it’s Spielberg-stupid, which means the landing is somehow cleaner than it deserves.

6. The Windshield — The Counselor (2013)

Cuttable offense: a cartel thriller pauses so Javier Bardem can tell Michael Fassbender about the time Cameron Diaz fucked his car.

The Counselor is already a weird, punishing movie. Everyone is rich, doomed, overdressed, and talking like the cartel sent them philosophy homework.

Then Cameron Diaz climbs onto a Ferrari windshield.

The scene is infamous because it sounds fake when described. It plays like a metaphor escaped from a first draft and started humping the props. Javier Bardem tells the story with the haunted confusion of a man who has seen something no insurance policy can repair.

A cleaner movie would cut it to protect the tone. A less interesting movie would be embarrassed.

I love that The Counselor kept it, because this is the exact moment the movie stops pretending its worldview is merely bleak and reveals it is also deeply, aggressively insane.

7. His Soul Is Still Dancing — Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009)

Cuttable offense: a dirty-cop thriller stops so Nicolas Cage can request a follow-up shooting on spiritual grounds.

Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is not a normal crime movie, but it does occasionally wear the clothes of one. There are drugs, investigations, gambling debts, guns, witnesses, all the usual furniture.

Then Nicolas Cage looks at a dead man and says, “Shoot him again. His soul is still dancing.”

And the movie shows us the soul dancing.

This should not work. It should snap the movie in half. It should feel like the entire film took a hit off Terence’s lucky crack pipe.

Instead, it becomes the movie’s mission statement. The whole thing is sick, funny, damaged, and somehow vibrating on a spiritual frequency only reptiles and Nicolas Cage can hear.

A sane person might have cut it.

A sane person would have been wrong.

In some other universe, there are tidier versions of all of these movies.

I would hate it there.

I don’t plan it. The conversation drifts toward movies, the way all decent conversations eventually should, and suddenly I’m explaining why Movie 43 still makes me laugh like an idiot.

Yes, I know. It’s sophomoric. Sometimes it’s problematic. It has enough famous people in it to feel like a bona fide blackmail situation. I understand every charge against it, and I still laugh my ass off.

Then Batman & Robin comes up, and I’m already halfway into an argument about why that glowing aquarium of bad decisions still works on me.

The condemned movie enters the room, and there I am, clearing my throat for the defense.

The Bad Movie Defense Fund

My default setting with movies is generosity, more often than not. Maybe that sounds self-righteous. That’s fine. I’m comfortable with the risk.

I like most movies. My Letterboxd account probably looks like I’m grading on a curve after being slipped a twenty in the parking lot. I can usually find something worthwhile: a weird performance, a strong practical effect, one good scene, an actor swinging so hard the movie has to duck.

That doesn’t mean I’m wandering around giving every movie a hug just because someone finished it. I hate movies too. I walked out of Iron Lung recently, which I’ve only done twice in my life. Not because it was cheap. Not because it was small. Because I was bored out of my skull.

Boring is unforgivable. And when I say boring, I don’t mean slow. Slow can actually be great. It can hypnotize you, punish you, and pay you back two hours later with interest. A boring movie just sits there, breathing through its mouth.

The movies I defend have to give me something. They can be broken, tacky, stupid, underwritten, badly acted, morally suspect, or, in the case of Batman & Robin, dressed entirely in rubber nipples. They just can’t be lifeless.

I’ll keep standing up for that neon disaster before I waste breath on some franchise errand that showed up to fill a release calendar. (Looking at you, Disney.) At least it’s alive in a way a lot of modern franchise product is too scared to be. It’s a glossy, expensive, late-’90s mutation of the old Batman TV show, all Day-Glo Gotham and blockbuster money with no adult supervision. The actors launch choices into orbit. Uma Thurman plays Poison Ivy like subtlety had already been murdered in the parking lot. Mr. Freeze delivers ice pun after ice pun, and God help me, I remain powerless against them.

Give me a disaster with personality over a respectable nothing.

Tell Them What They’re Getting Into

The biggest mistake you can make when recommending a bad movie is pretending it isn’t one.

If most people hate it, say that. If it’s trashy, say that. If it’s terrible but somehow still worth seeing, say that too. I feel less like I’ve committed a social crime when I hand someone the correct warning label first.

With the right friend, I can recommend Megalopolis by saying, “Jon Voight boner arrow. That is all.”

That only works with people who already know what kind of illness I’m carrying. For anyone else, I’m giving more context. I’m telling them Francis Ford Coppola sold off a huge piece of his wine company to fund this nonsense, and what we got feels like forty years of stoned Coppola thoughts, each one somehow granted its own building permit.

Watching it feels like touring a building that failed every inspection. Every room is unsafe. Somehow, you keep walking.

Hard Ticket to Hawaii is easier. Yes, it’s trashy. But someone hits a skateboarding assassin with a car, sends him flying through the air, and blows him out of the sky with a rocket launcher. Then the blow-up doll he was carrying gets the same rocket-launcher treatment. And that’s only one scene.

I’m sorry, but at a certain point the defense rests.

Other movies need a different lens. Sometimes the pitch is just, “Pretend you’re ten years old again.” That’s how I’d tell someone to watch Masters of the Universe (1987). I’m not saying it’s great. I’m saying it’s better than people give it credit for, Frank Langella delivers a perfect performance as Skeletor, and as an ‘80s time-capsule movie for kids, it does just fine. If you meet it on that level, it’s well worth the watch.

Same with Mortal Kombat (1995). Christopher Lambert as Raiden is a glaring problem, but the movie is still fun. The fights work. Some of the effects still hold up. Watch it like you’re young enough to care more about the tournament than the adaptation choices, and it still has the goods.

Know who you’re recommending it to. Tell them what kind of mess they’re walking into. Hand them the right lens. After that, the movie is responsible for itself.

I Have Also Been the Problem

Now is probably a good time to mention that I’ve been guilty of misreading the room. Badly, and on more than one occasion.

When I was twenty, I put Meet the Feebles on at a party as background noise, which is a choice you make when you’re young, stupid, and a little too proud of your DVD collection. Within thirty minutes, someone yelled, “What the FUCK is this? Turn that shit off,” and the DVD got pulled from the player.

That one was on me. Peter Jackson’s earlier gross-out cult films are not for mixed company.

Part of me hoped someone would recognize it and yell, “Holy shit, Meet the Feebles!” Then I could talk to another damaged film freak and feel seen. Another part of me wanted it to offend people. I wanted them to sit there and deal with it because I was twenty and a complete ass clown.

That shame is funny now because I earned it. The version that still pisses me off is different.

When friends gang up on me for liking something, I don’t fold. I start checking their shelves.

Everybody has some dumb movie they’ve quietly protected for years. Some cheap sequel, some ugly comedy, some bargain-bin oddity they imprinted on before taste turned into a personality contest.

What stings is how selective the rules get. Their awful thing is nostalgia. Their bottom-shelf favorite is “you had to be there.” Their childhood embarrassment is comfort food. Mine is apparently a cry for help.

Convenient.

Finding the Flaw Is the Easy Part

I usually understand why people hate the movies I defend. I hear the complaints. Sometimes I agree with every one of them. The acting is rough. The tone is confused. The jokes aged like milk in the glove compartment of a car parked in Arizona.

Fair enough. But a movie can be a mess and still be worth watching.

I can’t tell you a movie is objectively good or bad. Spoiler: “objectively” doesn’t exist in art. Never has. Never will. Stop dragging that word into arguments about movies like it proves anything.

I can tell you why I think it works, why it’s worth watching, why it fascinates me, or why it should be preserved somewhere between a museum and a crime scene. Your opinion belongs to you. Mine belongs to me. I’m not trying to win the argument. I’m trying to keep the conversation alive.

If your main contribution to movies is finding the flaw, congratulations. Very brave work.

What else did you find?

The film bro misery machine loses me right there. The “professional critic” posture. The Substack hall monitors. The Letterboxd assassins polishing their one-star reviews like ceremonial knives. The people who seem excited to dislike things because it either keeps their brand intact or helps justify their grating, therapy-deprived personality.

Movies have taken up an unreasonable amount of space in my life. Commentary tracks, making-of documentaries, deleted scenes, whatever was buried on Disc 2. I went to film school for two years before dropping out (twenty-year-old ass clown, remember). I made short films when I was younger, and still kind of do now, only it’s social media content for clients. I know how hard it is to finish anything.

A bad movie still means somebody dragged an impossible thing across the finish line, even if the final result looks like nobody should admit that. Some cared. Some failed. Some made the wrong choice with absolute conviction, which is often more interesting than the right choice made by committee.

Keep Your Diamond-Encrusted Opinion

Tell me you hated the movie. I can handle that. Tell me it was stupid, too loud, too cheap, too long, too in love with its own nonsense. Fine. We can still have a good conversation.

The little throne routine gets old fast.

If someone has watched widely, thought deeply, and developed a real point of view, great. Pull up a chair. Let’s ruin dinner by talking about movies for three hours. But if “refined taste” just means you’ve trained yourself to enjoy less and look down on more, I’m not lining up to kiss the ring.

If my affection for Movie 43, Batman & Robin, or Hard Ticket to Hawaii makes you see me as less serious, I don’t think I’m the one who lost the plot. It must be exhausting to miss out on that much fun and call the emptiness “standards.”

Some people have turned movie taste into a contest to see who can be the least impressed. They treat every imperfect movie like it broke into their house at 3 a.m. and took a shit in their refrigerator. They call it discernment. I call it sad.

If your taste has locked you in a prison where every bad line, strange choice, or deranged performance exists only to prove how smart you are, I don’t envy you. I pity you. There are too many weird, defective, fascinating movies out there to spend your life guarding the door like joy might sneak past you.

I’d rather be the person still looking for the part worth saving. The scene nobody responsible would’ve approved. The disaster that keeps finding new ways to be watchable.

They can keep their diamond-encrusted opinion.

I’m going in.

A rule they overvalue. A wound they keep feeding. A costume they started calling a personality.

At some point, the flaw stops being a flaw and gets promoted to management. The character finds one crooked piece of themselves, mistakes it for a life philosophy, and spends the rest of the movie making sure everyone else has to deal with it.

Light spoilers ahead. Nobody on this list is great at moderation.

1. Walter Sobchak — The Big Lebowski (1998)

Wrong thing: being right.

Walter Sobchak doesn’t enter conversations so much as he establishes jurisdiction. Every room has rules, and if it doesn’t, he brought some. Bowling has rules. Shabbos has rules. Vietnam has a point of comparison for apparently every human experience. Even friendship becomes something he can argue at you until the oxygen leaves the room.

The thing is, Walter is not always wrong about the broad idea. Rules matter. Loyalty matters. Standards matter. But he needs being right more than he needs anyone to be okay. He can turn a bowling league dispute into an armed standoff and a friend’s funeral into an unsolicited Vietnam lecture.

Walter’s tragedy is also the joke: he cares, but his care comes dressed as a hostage crisis.

2. Nancy Downs — The Craft (1996)

Wrong thing: power.

Nancy Downs does not treat power like a responsibility because power has never treated her with much kindness.

In The Craft, magic gives Nancy something the real world never did: leverage. Once she has it, every old humiliation starts looking like an invoice, and Nancy starts collecting with interest.

Fairuza Balk plays her like a live wire that found religion in an outlet. All the stuff Nancy had to swallow suddenly has voltage behind it. Power gives Nancy confidence, but more dangerously, it gives her interpretation. If she can make things happen, then maybe every feeling she has is sacred. Maybe every transgression deserves punishment. Maybe being chosen means never having to be careful again.

3. Herbert West — Re-Animator (1985)

Wrong thing: scientific superiority.

Herbert West looks at death the way most people look at a difficult stain: inconvenient, annoying, probably solvable if everyone would just stop being so emotional and let him work.

He arrives at Miskatonic with a theory, glowing green serum, and the spiritual warmth of a tax audit. His curiosity has no emergency stop. If the dead thing twitches, screams, bites, or tears the room apart, he still hears one word: progress. West doesn’t want to understand the boundary between life and death. He wants to humiliate it.

Ethics are for people with lower test scores. Grief is background noise. A corpse is nothing more than an opportunity.

Herbert’s menace comes from the fact that catastrophe barely registers as catastrophe. If the room survives long enough for him to take notes, he counts it as science.

4. Nina Sayers — Black Swan (2010)

Wrong thing: perfection.

Nina Sayers has mistaken perfection for safety, and Black Swan digs its claws in right there. Her life has been built around control: the right body, the right movement, the right face, the right amount of hunger allowed into the room. Then the Swan Queen role demands everything she has spent years trying to starve out of herself.

Perfection gets away with murder because it sounds respectable. Nina can call it discipline, sacrifice, seriousness, whatever makes the damage look professional. But the role keeps asking for more skin, more instinct, more surrender, and she keeps paying for it by carving away the parts of herself that might resist.

The performance becomes the trap she mistakes for escape. Every feather, mirror, and hallucination pushes her closer to the same lie: if she can finally become perfect, maybe there won’t be enough of Nina left to hurt anymore.

5. Stevo — SLC Punk! (1998)

Wrong thing: identity.

Stevo spends SLC Punk! narrating his own rebellion like he’s afraid somebody might mistake it for a phase.

He knows the theory, the scene politics, the sellouts, the phonies, the proper level of contempt for Salt Lake City, and exactly how much disgust a person should aim at the nearest available authority figure. Punk gives him language, style, community, enemies, and a way to turn every adult expectation into evidence for the prosecution.

The costume fits because he needs it to. Under the neon hair and the lectures is a smart, angry kid trying to keep the future from getting too close. Then something genuinely tragic knocks the slogans loose. What once felt like liberation starts to feel like a cage with louder records.

6. Elisabeth Sparkle — The Substance (2024)

Wrong thing: youth.

Elisabeth Sparkle is not vain in any simple way. The Substance understands that vanity can be installed, maintained, and punished by the same machine.

She lives in an industry that puts women under glass, then acts surprised when they start bleeding against it. Her wrong thing is youth, but the movie knows exactly who handed that obsession to her, wrapped it in applause, and charged rent on it for decades.

After she gets pushed out for aging, Elisabeth accepts the offer show business has been making forever: become younger, hotter, smoother, easier to sell, and maybe they’ll let you back in the room. The horror is not only what happens to her body. It’s how quickly she accepts the insult buried inside the offer: the original version of herself has become the liability.

Youth becomes a contract. Then a rival. Then a punishment with better skin.

7. Jeffrey Beaumont — Blue Velvet (1986)

Wrong thing: curiosity.

Jeffrey Beaumont finds a severed ear in a field, which is the universe’s clearest possible way of saying: give this to the police and go home. Jeffrey handles the police part. Then curiosity starts filing appeals.

Curiosity becomes his moral trespassing kit. He wants to know what is under Lumberton’s clean, idyllic surface, and Blue Velvet is smart enough to notice how much he enjoys watching. The apartment, the key, the closet, the secrets behind the nice lawns: Jeffrey keeps stepping over the line and pretending the line moved.

He tells himself he is solving a mystery, and that excuse carries him deeper than it should. By the time he understands what he’s looking at, the looking has already changed him.

The wrong thing is never random. It fills a hole: fear, grief, loneliness, shame, resentment, the desperate need to matter. Give that hole enough authority, and eventually the person starts rearranging around it. The rule becomes the personality. The wound gets a wardrobe. The coping mechanism starts making demands.

So tell me: who else built their whole personality around the wrong thing?

• How I Watched: Cannes Cut via a friend’s digital media library

• Fun Facts:

  • Southland Tales was originally planned as a nine-part “interactive experience,” with six graphic novels and a website leading into the movie. That plan was later reduced to three graphic novels, with the film serving as chapters four through six.

  • The movie has two official cuts. The theatrical version runs 145 minutes, while the Cannes Cut runs 159 minutes. Arrow’s limited edition Blu-ray included both versions, with a new 2K restoration approved by Richard Kelly and cinematographer Steven Poster.

  • After the disastrous Cannes premiere, Southland Tales went back into the editing room before its theatrical release. Kelly said he cut about 20 minutes, added around 100 visual effects shots, added an animated opener, and had Justin Timberlake rerecord his narration in a deadpan Apocalypse Now mode that changes the film’s tone drastically. The version most people have seen is a vastly reworked compromise.

  • Southland Tales opened in limited release in November 2007, eventually reaching only 63 theaters. For a movie that had spent years building cult-level curiosity through delays, prequel comics, Comic-Con appearances, and a heavy-handed re-cut, its actual theatrical life was barely more than a whisper.

In the three years between announcement and release, Southland Tales occupied the dangerous part of my brain where anticipation starts doing its own marketing. I was a huge Donnie Darko fan, and Richard Kelly getting a big budget sounded like the next logical obsession. I’d already built a shrine to this thing in my head, which is usually the first sign that a movie is about to hurt my feelings. Then Cannes happened, the movie got mauled, the release got delayed and shrunk, and by the time it finally reached theaters, it wasn’t even playing in my city. Nothing humbles anticipation like realizing the movie you’ve been waiting years to see has been released with all the confidence of evidence disposal.

I rented the DVD when it came out, watched it once, absolutely loathed it, and mostly forgot about it. For years, my entire memory of Southland Tales came down to two pieces of shrapnel: Justin Timberlake bleeding through “I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier,” and Kevin Smith buried under a landfill of makeup. His performance stung quite a bit because I was a huge Kevin Smith fan at the time. I still love him, but back then I was obsessed. Then I started noticing the wildly divided Letterboxd reactions. Plenty of people were trashing it the way I probably would have after that first watch, while just as many seemed ready to defend it, especially the original Cannes Cut. So, still mildly scarred from that first rental with my memory wiped like Boxer Santaros himself, I tossed Southland Tales into the Case File poll. “Let the people decide!” I exclaimed maniacally in my head. “If they will it… I’ll give it another shot.”

I fired up the Cannes Cut, and the case got a lot more complicated. Much to my surprise, the damn thing started opening up. The first 10 minutes felt so different right away. I wasn’t immediately put off like I was with the theatrical cut. The pacing made more sense. The shape became clearer. Some of the extra material gives the world more room to feel like an actual, deranged vision instead of a famous sophomore film crater. There’s still more movie crammed into this thing than it was probably built to hold, but the sheer ambition and chaotic execution are more than worth the price of admission. Serious notes about politics, socioeconomics, faith, addiction, and mental health keep running into wild comedy bits at full speed, and it’s honestly jarring. But the more I sit with it, the more those collisions feel like part of the design: a huge, symbolic, deeply satirical future-parody of a culture sprinting toward its own dumb apocalypse.

This one isn’t going on the slab as a simple disaster anymore. Southland Tales is messy, overloaded, hilarious, strangely moving, and operating with a level of conviction I can’t help but admire. Setting its apocalyptic future in 2008, barely two years after its Cannes premiere, made the movie look ridiculous in the moment; watching it in 2026, the surveillance panic, celebrity politics, corporate control, tech billionaires steering society with world-breaking toys, and national nervous breakdown don’t feel nearly as far-fetched. Rather than sanding down the chaos, the longer cut gives it the context it needed. After nearly twenty years, the reputation has turned into a brawl between people who bounced off it hard and people who swear there’s a great movie hiding in plain sight. Somehow, infuriatingly, I think the true believers are onto something.

Then there are movies where the pitch makes you sound like you’re trying to ruin someone’s evening.

These aren’t bad movies with cult excuses duct-taped to them. That’s a different operating table. This list is about movies that actually work, sometimes brilliantly, despite sounding like premises no sane person should’ve greenlit. The idea sounds dumb, gimmicky, corporate, or impossible. Then you watch it and realize the movie knows exactly what it’s doing.

1. The Lego Movie (2014)

On paper, this should’ve been plastic-brick propaganda with celebrity voices and a toy aisle where its soul should be. A feature-length Lego commercial sounds like the kind of thing you put on for children when you need 90 minutes to fold laundry and reconsider your life.

Then the movie shows up with jokes, pace, actual visual imagination, and a weirdly sincere argument about creativity. It understands play better than most movies allegedly made about imagination. The whole thing is built out of a corporate product, yet it somehow feels less cynical than half the original ideas Hollywood coughs up.

The dumb pitch is “what if Lego had lore?” The better pitch is “what if a toy commercial accidentally understood childhood, adulthood, control issues, and the spiritual danger of gluing everything into place?”

I guess that one’s harder to put on a lunchbox.

2. Galaxy Quest (1999)

“Washed-up actors from a fake Star Trek show get mistaken for real space heroes” sounds like an SNL sketch stretched far past its legal limit. It could’ve been 100 minutes of cheap costumes, convention jokes, and people elbowing you in the ribs to say, “Nerds, right?”

Instead, Galaxy Quest does something much smarter. It loves the thing it’s making fun of. The jokes land because the movie understands the embarrassment, sweetness, ego, exhaustion, and strange dignity of being attached to a show that means more to the fans than it does to some of the people who made it.

The aliens aren’t the punchline. The fans aren’t the punchline. Even the actors, ridiculous as they are, get treated like people.

It sounds like a Star Trek spoof. It plays like a love letter written with just enough sarcasm to keep everyone honest.

3. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

If you describe this one too simply, it sounds like the laziest horror setup ever dragged out of a moldy basement.

A bunch of young people go to a cabin. Bad things happen.

Great. Stop the presses. Somebody alert the virgins and the fog machine.

The genius of The Cabin in the Woods is that it knows exactly how dead that setup should feel. The movie starts with the most exhausted horror premise in the drawer, then opens a control room under it. Suddenly the clichés aren’t lazy writing. They’re infrastructure. The dumb choices, the archetypes, the ritualized stupidity, the horny detours, the basement full of bad ideas: all of it becomes part of the machine.

That’s where the movie really clicks. All the stuff that usually makes you groan suddenly has a reason to exist. The cabin transforms a lazy setup into a genre trap where every bad decision has been scheduled, approved, and quietly nudged into place by bored office drones trying to keep the apocalypse off the calendar.

4. Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

Try explaining Big Trouble in Little China to someone who hasn’t seen it and watch your credibility leave your body.

There’s a trucker, a kidnapped woman, ancient sorcery, martial arts gangs, lightning guys, a sewer monster, Kurt Russell doing John Wayne karaoke, and somehow the funniest part is that the loudest man in the room keeps missing the fact that he’s not the hero.

That’s the real trick. Jack Burton thinks he wandered into his own action movie. The movie knows he stumbled into someone else’s myth and is mostly surviving through confidence, reflexes, and the spiritual protection of being too dumb to fully process the danger around him.

The plot is a carnival ride held together with neon, smoke, and blessed stupidity. But the rhythm is perfect. It moves like a comic book somebody spilled beer on, and it never stops grinning at its own nonsense.

5. Being John Malkovich (1999)

A sad puppeteer finds a little door that leads into John Malkovich’s head.

That is not a premise. That is a sentence you hear from the guy at a party who ate one too many mushrooms, right before you start looking for your ride.

Somehow, Being John Malkovich turns that impossible idea into something funny, mean, horny, pathetic, and weirdly devastating. It starts as absurdist comedy, then keeps digging until the joke has bones under it. Identity, obsession, artistic ego, the fantasy of escaping yourself, the ugliness of wanting access to someone else’s life: somehow, the movie smuggles all of that through a premise that sounds like an improv prompt from hell.

A lesser version would just point at the weirdness and wait for applause. This one keeps pushing until the joke starts looking less like a joke and more like a diagnosis. By the end, the portal isn’t even the weird part anymore. The weird part is how quickly everyone treats another person’s identity like a vacancy.

6. Swiss Army Man (2016)

This is the final boss of stupid-sounding movie pitches.

A stranded man befriends a farting corpse.

You can feel normal people shutting down before the sentence ends. Honestly, fair. That pitch sounds like something a 12-year-old made up after discovering both mortality and beans.

Then Swiss Army Man has the nerve to become genuinely moving. Not by sanding off the gross stuff or pretending the premise is more respectable than it is. It drags you through farts, erections, survival fantasies, shame, loneliness, and a dead Daniel Radcliffe used as a multi-tool, then somehow turns all that wreckage into something tender about needing another person so badly you’ll build a whole world just to hear someone answer back.

It shouldn’t work. It should be a film festival dare that escaped containment. Instead, it becomes one of the strangest and most compelling arguments for connection I’ve ever seen, a movie where the dumbest possible pitch somehow lands somewhere painfully human.

A bad pitch can make a good movie sound doomed before it ever gets a chance. These six are proof that sometimes the premise is the least useful thing you can know about a movie.

What movie sounded completely stupid until you actually watched it?

Before the algorithms, finding a weird movie meant wandering shelves, trusting cover art, catching cable halfway through, or taking a recommendation that sounded like half a warning.

I profoundly miss video rental stores.

The routine was simple. First, hit the new releases and see if anything stood out. A lot of the time, I already knew what big movie was going to be there. The one that took up an entire shelf section with copy after copy after copy, and somehow you still knew the wall would be wiped out by Friday night.

A lot of times, I went right for that.

But what I really loved were the smaller releases with only one to three copies on the wall. Those were the gambles. The weird little titles trying to look dangerous enough to follow you home. A paragraph or two on the back. Maybe a few critic blurbs chopped into tiny pieces to make the movie sound less like a mistake.

That was all we had to go on.

Will this suck? Many times, yes.

Is this some underseen masterpiece I’m going to act smug about discovering? Rarer, but often enough to keep the sickness alive.

The Store Made You Choose

There was no escape hatch with VHS and DVD.

I couldn’t start a movie, decide 20 minutes in that it wasn’t working for me, and click over to something else. I had to sit with it. I had to finish it. At the very least, I’d have something to pontificate about with my movie nerd friends.

I paid for it, after all. I paid for that one thing, and I was going to get my money’s worth.

More than even the rental store, I miss wandering the old Tower Records in my hometown, or Rasputin Music. Tower had all new stuff, but Rasputin had used movies too, which made the hunt feel a little more dangerous. Those movies had histories. Somebody else had already taken them home, rolled the dice, and decided to send them back into circulation.

My friends and I would comb through every aisle, pulling out movies and making snap judgments based on cover art and genre. We were our own knee-jerk Siskel and Eberts. Something would grab me, I’d bring it over to my friend Bustos (AKA Enrique “Action” Bustos) and check in.

Had he seen it? Was he familiar with the director, writer, or any of the cast? If not, did it look as good or as wild as I thought it did?

There are so many gems I own now that I would’ve never even known about if the cover hadn’t jumped at me in a store. Discovery had a geography then. You crossed sections, doubled back, pulled cases out, changed your mind, wandered away, then came back because some weird little movie kept staring at you like that creepy picture of Jesus all our grandparents had on their wall.

The Horror Aisle Got to Me Early

When I was a kid, there was this place less than a mile from my house called Video Maniacs. It was a smaller chain, but to me it felt like the anti-Blockbuster.

Bigger selection. Stranger energy. Less corporate polish. That’s where my first real curiosity with horror started.

This was the ’90s, so when I trolled the horror section as a kid, the covers from the ’80s and ’90s tapes were insane. Some genuinely frightened me. Others intrigued me in a way I couldn’t explain yet.

I clearly remember the Dead Alive cover pulling me in. I remember the back cover of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors scaring the shit out of me very young, especially that image of the giant Freddy head trying to eat Kristen whole. I remember chuckling at covers like Ghoulies, even though the comedic slant and PG-13 rating couldn’t convince my dad to let us rent it.

My dad didn’t like horror.

Well, that’s not fair. He loved The Omen, The Exorcist, and The Shining. The “prestige” A24 horror of his day. Slashers and gory schlockfests weren’t anything he wanted to waste his time on.

That almost made those movies more powerful to me. The forbidden ones. The stupid ones. The ones with goblin freaks, severed heads, screaming faces, and taglines that read like threats. The covers made the movies feel bigger, scarier, dirtier, funnier, and more mysterious than they sometimes were.

Trailers existed, obviously. We weren’t living in caves. But you didn’t have one available in the moment. You had the image on the front, the breathless nonsense on the back, and your own underdeveloped sense of danger.

Often, that was enough.

Cable Was the Other Video Store

Late-night cable had its own version of the hunt.

You turned on the box, started flipping through channels, and saw what you could land on before anyone noticed you were watching something you weren’t supposed to be. By the time I was 11, it became what I could get away with watching on weekends after everyone was asleep.

A lot of movies reached me that way. Sometimes I heard about them at school first, then found them later. Demolition Man was one of those. Kids talked about it like it had been beamed in from some cooler, stupider future. When I finally caught it on HBO when I wasn’t supposed to, that kind of over-the-top sci-fi action sprinkled with comedy became part of my wiring.

Then there was The Mangler.

I stumbled onto that one way too young. The opening is sincerely frightening, especially with zero context at that age. The movie gets campier as it goes, because of course it does, but dear God, I remember being frozen in horror for at least five minutes.

I hadn’t selected it from a menu. I hadn’t read about it. I hadn’t been guided there by a thumbnail. I just landed on it, and suddenly the TV was committing crimes against my childhood. Glorious crimes.

Some people may argue, “But we have apps like that now. You can watch TV like we used to.”

Not really.

PlutoTV probably comes closest in spirit, but the experience is still vastly different. Every app belongs to some larger ecosystem. Every pause is a chance to sell you something else. The ads are no longer just car commercials, cereal, and local furniture stores screaming at you from the void. Now they’re hyper-targeted, built from everything you clicked, searched, paused on, joked about, almost bought, and quietly hated yourself for wanting.

That’s the difference. Cable felt like wandering into something by accident. Apps feel like being followed around the store by a salesman who already read your diary.

Other People Were the Algorithm

A lot of movies outside my lane came through cable, but when it came to renting things, my childhood best friend Andrew mattered most.

We had a fortuitous and complementary dichotomy with our respective parents.

His parents were not fans of violence in films, especially gory violence. They thought it was bad to show kids that stuff, but they were fine with nudity and sexuality because they didn’t think it was something taboo.

At my house, boobs and sexuality were a no-go. Hurray Catholicism! But I could watch Terminator 2: Judgment Day when I was in second grade.

I remember begging to watch it because everyone at school had seen it and I felt like the outsider. It’s one of my clearest early movie memories because it was the first R-rated movie I watched that wasn’t edited for TV. And this is the kicker: I clearly remember my dad fast-forwarding through Linda Hamilton swearing up a storm in the mental hospital, but never fast-forwarding through any of the violence. The ‘90s were a special time.

So Andrew came to my house to watch violent action movies, and I went to his house to watch raunchy sex comedies and thrillers. There, I was introduced to Risky Business, The Crush, and Booty Call in my early teens.

No clean, “optimized” recommendation system. Just a bunch of kids figuring out which house had which loopholes, which parents were watching, and where the next dangerous movie could slip through.

And sometimes the best trap was hiding inside the least suspicious building in town.

About a month before summer break ended, when I was heading into eighth grade, I had to go to the library to finally get the three summer reading books I’d been assigned and had been aggressively not reading. I found the books, then decided to peruse their VHS selection.

Probably a bunch of educational, boring nonsense, but why not see if anything was worth taking home?

Holy shit, was I wrong.

They had a small video rental store in there, essentially. They even had newer movies, including one called Fair Game with Cindy Crawford and Billy Baldwin. I had a Cindy Crawford problem at that age, as did many of us in the ’90s, so this movie was already on my radar.

I took it to the front, and nobody batted an eye. They sent me on my way.

I went home and quickly found out there’s a topless sex scene with Cindy and Billy. And I got that for free from our local library.

I had never been so grateful for well-allocated tax dollars.

Streaming Keeps Asking Me the Same Question

Looking for movies now, I’m constantly being shown the same bullshit over and over again.

These platforms boast thousands upon thousands of titles, but most of them aren’t truly reachable unless you already know what to type into the search bar. The algorithm takes what it thinks it knows about you and starts building a fence.

He likes things like this. Keep showing him things like this.

These apps are supposed to make watching easier and more convenient. Somehow, I spend more time scrolling through a bunch of shit I don’t want to watch, or already watched too recently, than I ever spent wandering a video store.

And I mean that literally. Add up the scrolling, backing out, switching apps, giving up, coming back, and scrolling again. That’s a rental-store trip burned from the couch, and you still haven’t picked a movie.

Then I click down to the next row and find a bunch of the same movies I scrolled past two rows earlier, wearing a different, often inaccurate category hat.

Speaking of streaming categories, they’re usually generic sludge.

I do love Tubi’s categories, though. They have some very entertaining, hyper-specific rows that are often exactly the vibe I’m looking for. They also have tons of strange, weird, delightfully bad movies I enjoy. My only lament with Tubi is the ads. I understand the business model. I just wish there were a version where I could pay them directly and stop being sold trucks I don’t need, suspicious medications, and class action lawsuits for the suspicious medications the internet tried to sell me five years earlier.

“Because you watched” recommendations crack me up because of how off they can be. I know the system is not literally one guy in a headset guessing what I like. It’s some stew of my behavior, other viewers’ behavior, title data, timing, and whatever else keeps the machine humming.

But taste is so specific. So personal. So stupid and irrational and built out of accidents.

The best version of movie discovery would be less algorithm and more video store. New releases, alphabetical. Genre collections, alphabetical. That’s it. No paying extra to get your movie featured more. No suggestions based on shit I already watched. Just exploration.

I also hate how hard these platforms push their own stuff.

We once had to bust up the monopoly movie studios had on production, distribution, and exhibition in this country. Streaming has found its own modern version of that problem: platforms making the stuff, owning the pipes, and shoving their own originals to the front of the store like we should be grateful for the privilege.

If Netflix’s algorithm were really smart, it would know I’ve skipped past that piece of shit Red Notice about a thousand times and maybe consider putting another movie it’s been hiding in its place.

These systems are smart about monetizing attention. Respecting our time and taste is much lower on the whiteboard, assuming it made the whiteboard at all.

Weird Movies Should Feel Found

Movie hunting has been stripped for parts and left on blocks.

The old hunt was a wild exploration, even inside controlled spaces like rental stores, record stores, libraries, and cable packages. I’m glad I came up when cover art, physical browsing, bad guesses, and human recommendations helped shape my taste.

I can’t imagine being young now and having my movie brain built inside forced tunnel vision, recommended and re-shown the same titles with fewer strange paths toward odd discoveries.

The “contentification” of movies is one of the worst shifts the industry ever allowed.

Movies are not “content.”

Content is a short meme Reel. Content is a Canva slide deck teaching you five ways to “crush your goals.” Movies are fucking art.

The delivery system matters because it changes our relationship to the art. A movie on a shelf had weight before you watched it. A movie someone handed you had a little piece of that person attached to it. A movie caught halfway through on cable felt like something you intercepted by accident. A movie picked for the wrong reason could still become part of you.

The more everything gets flattened into a row, a thumbnail, a metric, a retention strategy, the easier it becomes to forget that movies are supposed to feel alive.

Sometimes you found a masterpiece. Sometimes you found garbage.

Sometimes you found a movie you were too young for, too dumb for, or exactly the right amount of damaged for.

But you found it.

That used to matter.

So tell me: what movie did you find in the wild before the algorithm could get its hands on you?

A great monologue can stop a movie cold in the best possible way.

It can be a grotesque war story told with total sincerity or maybe one long confession where every passing second feels like the actor might burst into flames.

These are moments where everyone clears the floor and the actor takes over.

1. Christopher Walken — Pulp Fiction (1994)

The watch monologue is the gold standard.

Christopher Walken saunters into Pulp Fiction for just one scene and turns a family heirloom into a very specific war story no child should have to process. A decorated military man sits a little boy down and explains the heroic journey of a watch through multiple soldiers, multiple wars, and multiple orifices. Oriphi? Whatever. Horrifying.

Walken plays it perfectly straight. No wink. Zero apology. Just a strange, deliberate cadence turning every disgusting detail into family mythology. The longer he talks, the more important the watch becomes.

By the end, the object has serious weight. History. Sweat. Trauma.

Only Walken could make all of that sound like a sacred duty.

2. Tilda Swinton — Snowpiercer (2013)

Minister Mason enters Snowpiercer like a fascist substitute teacher who crawled out of a propaganda pamphlet.

Tilda Swinton takes blunt class-system exposition and turns it into a full-body grotesque performance. The shoe belongs on the foot. Everyone has a place. The train is sacred. Order must be preserved. The whole thing is so obvious it’s practically wearing a sandwich board that says SOCIETY IS A TRAIN.

Swinton leans into the ugliness beautifully.

The posture. Those teeth. The spittle flying from that nightmare of a mouth The pinched little voice. The monstrous cheerfulness of someone explaining cruelty like she’s helping you learn basic manners.

This speech needs a performer willing to make power look ridiculous, deluded, and completely convinced of itself.

Swinton gives Mason the soul of a hall monitor with access to executions.

3. Michael Shannon — Take Shelter (2011)

Public breakdown scenes can turn fake fast.

Michael Shannon’s cafeteria eruption in Take Shelter never feels like an actor chasing a sizzle reel. It feels like a man whose terror finally got too big for his body.

He’s warning everyone about a storm that only he can fully see. He sounds furious, humiliated, terrified, and yet convinced, all at once. The room doesn’t know whether to pity him, believe him, or start checking the exits.

Shannon makes the scene frightening because he lets the embarrassment peek through.

He knows how insane he sounds. He also believes every word. That tension gives the monologue its charge. The scene feels like a man trying to hold the ceiling in place while his own mind starts tearing the house apart.

4. Brad Dourif — Exorcist III (1990)

The Cell 11 scene gives Brad Dourif nowhere to hide.

Once the Gemini Killer starts describing the special things he does to his victims, the room gets cold fast. It’s a nasty monologue, delivered like he’s genuinely proud of the craftsmanship. Dourif doesn’t even need to move much. He just sits there and lets the details do the damage.

The danger is how easily this could turn into serial-killer community theater. The language is theatrical, cruel, and deliberately repulsive.

Dourif keeps it controlled enough to be worse.

Every pause has teeth. Every smile feels like bad news. He speaks like someone enjoying the fact that you have to keep listening.

5. Mia Goth — Pearl (2022)

Mia Goth’s kitchen-table confession in Pearl is a full emotional hostage situation.

Pearl starts with dead animals and poor Teddy, then keeps digging until jealousy, shame, loneliness, resentment, and delusion are all bleeding across the table.

This kind of monologue can collapse under its own intensity. Too much crying, too much trembling, too much actorly suffering, and suddenly the whole thing turns into audition-room misery.

Goth keeps it uglier and more interesting. She makes Pearl pathetic, scary, childish, cruel, and heartbreakingly needy in the same breath. By the end, all that’s left is raw want, guilt, and an audience quietly wondering how long they’ve been holding their breath.

6. Lupita Nyong’o — Us (2019)

Red’s monologue in Us has to carry a ridiculous amount of weight.

It explains the Tethered, deepens the nightmare, holds the fairy-tale logic together, and delivers a whole buried history through a voice that could’ve become parody in five seconds flat.

Lupita Nyong’o makes it hypnotic.

She speaks like language hurts. Every breath feels deliberate. Her body seems shaped by deprivation before the words have a chance to catch up.

The mythology is strange: doubles, tunnels, rabbits, scissors. Nyong’o gives all of it a body. A history. A reason to crawl out of the dark.

The scene turns exposition into one of my favorite nightmare bedtime stories.

The camera can move. The scene can breathe. But when the right actor gets a speech like this, the movie is 100% theirs.

  • Super Mario Bros. was the first live-action feature film based on a video game, which means it didn’t have a roadmap so much as a banana peel and a prayer. Whatever went wrong here, and plenty did, it was still testing a new kind of adaptation before anyone knew how badly one could go sideways.

  • The film went through several creative versions before landing on the “Dinohattan” angle. Earlier drafts leaned closer to fantasy and adventure, but the final movie turned the Mushroom Kingdom into a parallel-universe city full of fungus, reptilian bureaucracy, de-evolution tech, and decisions nobody could’ve predicted from the cartridge.

  • Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel came from Max Headroom, and you can feel that wiring all over the movie. It may not scream “Mario,” but it absolutely has the energy of people trying to build a strange, tactile, dystopian world instead of just cashing a check and recreating the mushroom-and-turtle version everyone expected.

  • The Morton-Jankel Cut comes from an earlier VHS workprint that runs about 20 minutes longer than the theatrical version, with extra subplots, extended scenes, more Koopa, and one big Iggy-and-Spike moment most people have never seen. It doesn’t magically turn the movie into a clean or remotely sane adaptation, but it does make it a bit more interesting: less a simple flop, more a fossil record of a deeply weird vision fighting the studio machinery.

Super Mario Bros. got me at the perfect age and confused the hell out of me immediately. I was 10 when it hit theaters, my brother was 8, and our house was fully infected with Nintendo fever. Technically, the NES belonged to my dad. My mom gave it to him for Father’s Day, and he dove headfirst into Super Mario Bros. like a man answering a spiritual calling. Since there was no saving your game, he’d pause it, leave the system on, and tell us not to touch it until he beat the damn thing. He finished it pretty fast. Then we were allowed to take our shot.

So when the first live-action video game movie arrived, we were exactly the people it should’ve worked on. My brother and I thought it was cool enough, even if it made almost no sense compared to the game. We were at the movies and that was always a treat at that age. My dad looked like he’d come back from the frontlines. Full thousand-yard stare as we exited the theater. This movie did so much damage to the idea of video game adaptations in our house that getting him to take us to Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat later felt like asking him to get back in the van after the first clown promised the second clown was normal.

I forgot about Super Mario Bros. for a while after that, then found a used DVD copy in my mid-20s, right around the time I started enjoying bad movies for what they often are: glorious dumpster fires where the right kind of weirdos can gather around and roast marshmallows. That’s when the movie clicked for me. Not as a secret masterpiece. Not as some misunderstood triumph. As a wildly misguided, insanely watchable object with fungus in its lungs, sparks in the walls, and a blueprint nobody should’ve approved.

This movie is a terrible idea for a Super Mario Bros. adaptation. The writing is rough, the dialogue keeps stepping on rakes, and turning Nintendo’s bright little obstacle-course universe into a dystopian lizard-city fever dream remains an absolutely deranged choice. I’m also glad it exists. The production design is fascinating, the actors give it more life than it probably deserves, and the Morton-Jankel Cut gives it a little more room to be its full, baffling self. I know it doesn’t work. I enjoy it because the failure is impossible to look away from. Against all medical advice and reasonable judgment, I have decided to… trust the fungus.

These are the ones that were rotten on arrival. Built on greed, ego, panic, or the kind of confidence that should require a helmet. The kind where hearing the pitch is enough to make your whole body go, “Nope.”

Here are six movie plans so bad they deserved to fail immediately. Spoilers ahead.

1. Jerry Lundegaard’s Kidnapping Plan — Fargo (1996)

Jerry Lundegaard’s masterstroke in Fargo is arranging the fake kidnapping of his own wife to squeeze ransom money out of his father-in-law. That sentence should’ve come with sirens. It’s the kind of idea a weak man talks himself into because ordinary failure no longer feels dramatic enough.

Everything about it is flimsy. Jerry hires men he can’t control, builds the whole thing on shaky money, and acts like terror will stay neat and tidy if everybody sticks to the schedule. He treats violence like an accounting trick. That’s why this plan belongs here. Jerry would love to think it was smart, then unlucky. The reality is, it’s cowardice pretending to be strategy.

2. Suzanne Stone’s Murder Plot — To Die For (1995)

Suzanne Stone’s plan in To Die For only works if the world agrees to behave like her personal camera crew. She flatters and manipulates a pack of teenage boys into killing for her, then assumes she’ll glide past the mess with her smile intact and her storybook future waiting on the other side.

That’s what makes it such a great bad plan. It depends on vanity more than logistics. Suzanne thinks she can direct reality because she’s spent too long treating every room like a screen test. Nicole Kidman plays her with perfect glossy delusion. The whole scheme rests on the belief that beauty, performance, and raw ambition can keep human beings from becoming chaotic. They cannot.

3. The Lugo Kidnapping Scheme — Pain & Gain (2013)

The kidnapping plan in Pain & Gain feels like it was built by men who learned everything they know about problem-solving from motivational posters and gas station supplements. Daniel Lugo and company move through crime with the confidence of people who think a positive attitude can replace basic reasoning.

The whole thing gets more absurd with each step, and everybody involved seems convinced raw bravado will cover the gaps. Nobody thinks past the next five minutes, nobody has the discipline for a serious crime, and every complication lands on men who are already in over their heads. By the time the wheels come off, the movie is simply cashing in on how doomed these idiots were from the start.

4. Keeping the Money — A Simple Plan (1998)

A Simple Plan opens with one of the most seductive bad ideas in movies: we’ll keep the money, stay calm, and nothing has to get worse. It sounds clean for about ten seconds, which is exactly what makes it dangerous. A lot of terrible plans get their foot in the door by borrowing the voice of common sense.

Then human nature takes over: greed, guilt, suspicion, fear, resentment. Once those get in the room, the original idea is already dead. The money changes the temperature around everyone who touches it, and every choice after that carries a little more panic. By the end, they’re handling a dangerous amount of cash with the judgment of men flicking matches into dry grass.

5. The Next Bet Fixes Everything — Uncut Gems (2019)

Howard Ratner’s scheme in Uncut Gems feels more like a compulsion he keeps mistaking for strategy. Every problem gets answered with one more move, one more deal, one more bet, one more burst of chatter fast enough to stay ahead of the last disaster. He puts all his faith in motion and keeps betting that the next bounce will save him.

That’s what earns it a place here. Howard keeps chasing the rush of the next fix while his life gets tighter and more dangerous around him. He’s always certain the next spin will clean up the mess, even as the mess keeps multiplying. From the outside, it’s terrifying to watch a man build his whole future on the hope that panic and momentum might finally line up in his favor.

6. The Jewelry Store Robbery — Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007)

The robbery plan in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead is absolute poison before anybody puts on a mask. Andy’s bright idea is to rob his parents’ jewelry store, grab the insurance money, and walk away cleaner than he went in. Even the pitch, no matter how you sugar-coat it, feels contaminated. It runs on pure entitlement, addiction, and moral decay.

What makes it so ugly is how much damage is already baked into the idea. The target is wrong, the motive is toxic, and the men involved don’t have the discipline or nerve to carry it out cleanly. Sidney Lumet films the fallout like a slow spiritual collapse. Suspense barely enters the equation. Everybody inside this thing is already compromised, and the plan carries that stain from the start.

These plans were dead the second somebody said them out loud. Which bad movie plan belongs here that I missed?

Then there are the ones who look like they’d still show up even if the paycheck bounced.

Not “best villains,” exactly. Not “scariest,” either. This is about onscreen nightmares who seem deeply delighted to be doing all of this. People who treat evil like a craft, a kink, and a chance to put some serious spin on the ball.

Here are seven movie villains who were having way too much fun.

1. Clarence Boddicker — RoboCop (1987)

Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) doesn’t have elegant supervillain energy. He’s a street ghoul. A nasty little scavenger with the smile of a man who thinks all of this mayhem is pretty damn funny.

That’s why he works so well. He never feels burdened by the filth around him. He feels comfortable in it. Casual, even. Every line has that ugly little curl to it. Every act of violence lands just a bit harder because he treats it like second nature. In a movie full of corporate decay and media-satire acidity, Clarence is the human slime keeping the whole thing glued together at street level.

2. Shooter McGavin — Happy Gilmore (1996)

Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald) is one of the funniest possible picks for this because his whole villain engine is pure pettiness. This loud idiot in a hockey jersey crashes his nice, orderly golf kingdom, and Shooter reacts like it’s a personal act of terrorism.

That’s what makes the performance pop. Shooter isn’t intimidating because he’s powerful. He’s entertaining because he’s such a polished little baby about all of this. The smile gets tighter, the pettiness gets louder, and every fresh insult to his precious little world gives him more life. Christopher McDonald knew exactly how hard to push him: smug, ridiculous, and just unstable enough to turn a country club snob into an all-time movie villain.

3. Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg — The Fifth Element (1997)

Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) looks like he got dressed during a nervous breakdown and still walked out the door convinced he was the sharpest man in the galaxy.

Zorg is vain, theatrical, fussy, and constantly irritated that reality refuses to arrange itself around him. That’s what makes him so much fun. He could glide through The Fifth Element like some icy mastermind, but instead he stomps through it in expensive lunacy, always one inconvenience away from a fresh little tantrum. Gary Oldman gives him this quirky peacock swagger and strained composure to make every scene feel like it could either close a billion-dollar deal or end with him throwing a chair across the room.

4. Simon Phoenix — Demolition Man (1993)

Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) wakes up in the softest future imaginable and immediately realizes he has entered the perfect playground.

Everybody else in Demolition Man is trapped in this sanitized world of manners, bland food, and zero texture. Simon saunters in like the one person on Earth thrilled that rules exist purely so he can break them. Wesley Snipes plays him with so much bounce that every one of his scenes feels like it got zapped with jumper cables. Enjoying violence is one thing. He enjoys being the loudest, loosest, most physical thing in a world that forgot how to deal with people like him.

5. Judge Doom — Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)

Judge Doom (Christopher Lloyd) is one of the best nightmare villains because he starts from stillness. Calm voice. Tight posture. Dead eyes. He doesn’t need to sell himself. He knows he already has the room.

That restraint is what makes the character so nasty. Doom feels fed by control, punishment, and the quiet pleasure of knowing he’s the most unnatural thing in the movie and nobody fully sees it yet. Then the mask starts to slip, and Christopher Lloyd lets the performance get stranger, louder, and more deranged. By the end, he’s an absolute maniac, which makes the earlier calm feel even worse.

6. Max Cady — Cape Fear (1991)

Max Cady (Robert De Niro) wants revenge, but he also wants presentation. He wants every appearance, every threat, and every sick little smile to land exactly the way he sees fit.

That’s what earns him a spot here. Cady turns torment into theater. He circles people, lingers, and stretches out every pause like he wants his menace properly appreciated. That extra showmanship makes him even uglier. De Niro plays him like a man who treats intimidation as an art form, and the movie gets nastier every time Cady seems pleased with himself.

7. Castor Troy — Face/Off (1997)

Castor Troy is the right closer here because he may be the purest version of this whole idea. For him, villainy is the perfect outlet. It gives his personality the exact size stage it needs to thrive.

Everything about him has extra sauce: the grin, the voice, the body language, the sense that he’s always trying to top whatever insane thing he did ten seconds earlier. Nicolas Cage sets that deranged tone perfectly, then John Travolta picks it up after the face switch and keeps it flying. It’s one of the great movie-villain flexes: a character so electric that two actors get to ham it up and neither one feels wasted.

Plenty of villains enjoy being evil, but Castor’s real love is being Castor. Evil just gives him the best venue.

Who did I miss? Drop the movie villains who looked way too happy to be on the job.

A different kind of Scarestack assignment

First off, thank you to for bringing me back into the Scarestack Society fold for Spring of King. My previous Scarestack contributions involved a Christmas shark movie and a deeply unhelpful travel guide to Jason Takes Manhattan, so this may seem like I took a wrong turn into the serious hallway.

I promise I’m still me.

But The Outsider calls for a different temperature.

The Timing Made It a Blur

I picked this miniseries because it landed right before COVID hit hard and the country disappeared into its own couch cushions. The finale aired in early March 2020, days before normal life went sideways, and like a lot of people, I watched so much TV during that stretch that entire shows now live in my brain as fragments, moods, and one or two faces I can still place.

I remembered Ben Mendelsohn. I remembered Cynthia Erivo. I remembered pieces of the story and the overall feeling of it, but not enough to say I really remembered the series.

That blur and a Scarestack invite gave me the perfect excuse to give it an honest second pass, instead of trusting whatever half-formed version of it survived from the lockdown fog.

What stayed with me this time was the grief. Not as a detail, but as the whole damn atmosphere.

The Case Isn’t What Stayed With Me

The Outsider begins with the kind of hook Stephen King can build in his sleep and still do better than most people awake. A child has been murdered. The evidence points to Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman). Then more evidence says Terry couldn’t possibly have done it. The show starts as a crime story with a cracked mirror in the center. Every fact makes the case clearer and less possible at the same time.

Jason Bateman also directed the first two episodes and executive produced the miniseries, which I somehow forgot even though this landed right in the middle of his Ozark run. Good lord, those opening episodes are nasty in the best way: tight, cold, controlled, and loaded with the kind of dread that makes every new detail feel worse than the last.

But the case isn’t what stayed with me on this rewatch.

The grief did.

Grief Is the Climate

The Outsider is soaked in it. Not in a preachy prestige-drama way. Nobody is wandering around explaining the human condition while the camera stares at a lamp. The grief is quieter and uglier than that. It’s the dead air after someone says something unforgivable. It’s a dinner table getting destroyed because a mother has no other language left. It’s Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) walking through the world like a man who has already been emptied out once and cannot afford another hole in reality.

That’s the part I’d forgotten. This show does not use grief as background flavor. Grief is the climate. Every room feels damp with it.

Richard Price’s adaptation makes one change that sharpens the whole thing: Ralph’s son is dead in the series. That decision loads the show before the plot even starts moving. Ralph isn’t simply a detective trying to solve an impossible case. He’s a grieving father trying to keep the universe inside a shape he can tolerate. Facts matter to him because facts are walls. Procedure matters because procedure is a railing. If the world can become impossible, then what else has he been wrong about?

That’s where Ben Mendelsohn is so good. Ralph’s skepticism isn’t stubborn cop nonsense, though there are definitely moments where I wanted Jeannie (Mare Winningham) to shake him by the shoulders and make him catch up to what she already seems willing to consider. His disbelief has weight behind it. He needs the supernatural explanation to be wrong because accepting it means accepting a world even less merciful than the one that already took his son.

Holly Changes the Pressure in the Room

And then Holly Gibney walks in, played by the incomparable Cynthia Erivo, who shines brightest in this series.

I haven’t read the novel yet, so Constant Readers are welcome to pontificate in the comments with whatever level of judgment feels spiritually necessary. I know Holly is sacred ground for a lot of King fans, and I can only speak to what Erivo does here.

Her Holly feels like she walked in already three steps ahead, painfully aware that dragging everyone else there is going to cost her.

She sees patterns other people can’t quite reach, then has to explain them to a room already looking for reasons not to listen. Her mind keeps moving past the point where everyone else gets embarrassed by the conclusion. She is brilliant, uncomfortable, lonely, and fully aware that telling the truth will make people look at her like she brought a raccoon to a dinner party. Erivo plays that pain without turning Holly into a collection of tics. There’s a real person under the precision.

That matters because The Outsider keeps forcing its characters into a horrible question: what happens when the truth is too strange to help?

Glory Maitland (Julianne Nicholson) is trapped in the part of the story where explanations are almost insulting. Terry’s name is destroyed in public, and no supernatural answer can give her family back the life they had before the arrest. The Petersons are even further past repair. Their loss is so absolute that every new clue feels almost obscene, because the investigation can only explain the wound. It can’t close it. Jeannie Anderson sees enough to know Ralph is wrong, but knowing that doesn’t make their home safer. Jack Hoskins (Marc Menchaca), neck-rash puppet and all-around ass clown, becomes the ugliest version of the show’s central sickness: grief, guilt, weakness, and anger turned into something an evil force can use.

A Grief Eater Is Worse Than a Boogeyman

That’s why the creature works for me. I don’t really care if the monster rules would survive a deposition. The lore is not the scary part. The idea is. This thing feeds on the damage around the murder. The child is the beginning. Then come the family collapse, the public shame, the revenge, the disbelief, the suicides, the ruined lives circling the original wound. That’s the feast.

A grief eater.

Awful phrase. Perfect phrase.

And yes, the show slows down. That’s the complaint people tend to make, and I understand it. The first two episodes are so brutally efficient that the back half can feel like it’s walking through mud by comparison.

I’m just not convinced that’s entirely a flaw.

Grief walks through mud. Shock does too. The Outsider spends so much time in the aftermath because the aftermath is where the thing keeps feeding. Solving the case can’t restore order once the damage has already multiplied. Truth shows up late, bruised, and holding a bill it can’t pay.

What Lingers

The aftermath is what hit me harder on rewatch. The supernatural horror is frightening, but the show’s real dread comes from watching people realize there may be an explanation and still no relief. Terry can be exonerated. Ralph can finally believe. Holly can see the pattern. None of that rewinds the agony.

The Outsider lingers because it understands something cruel about grief: answers help, but they do not disinfect the room.

By the end, the creature mechanics and final confrontation had faded behind the quieter damage. Ralph and Jeannie at the grave. Glory getting one thin breath of justice after being dragged through hell in public, her young daughters forced to carry the weight of it too. Holly carrying the burden of being right about something nobody should ever have to be right about.

This miniseries isn’t perfect. Ten hours is a lot of gloom, and some stretches sag. But if the slower middle starts testing your patience, stay with it. The weight is part of the design, and the final shape of the series depends on sitting in that discomfort longer than you might want to.

When The Outsider is locked into its deepest frequency, it’s one of the more mournful King adaptations I’ve seen. Grief stays messy. Belief feels costly. Clearing Terry’s name matters, but it doesn’t heal the wound.

It just lets the sorrow hang there.

Heavy.

Quiet.

Everywhere.

• Fun Facts:

  • The movie lands on Earth for the most Cannon Films reason imaginable: money. Gary Goddard said the Earth setting was already baked into the script as a low-budget move, and he had to fight to bookend the movie with Eternia so it would feel like a creative choice instead of a visible budget compromise.

  • Frank Langella did not treat Skeletor like just another paycheck. He took the role because his young son loved the character, later called Skeletor one of his favorite parts, and even helped shape some of the villain’s more theatrical dialogue. That is how a cartoon bad guy ends up talking like he wandered in from Shakespeare In the Park.

  • Gwildor exists partly because Orko was too difficult to pull off in live action. So the movie solved one toy line problem by inventing an entirely new little weirdo, then made him the guy carrying the Cosmic Key and a huge chunk of the plot. One practical-effects limitation, one brand-new Eternian oddball.

  • Cannon Films’ finances got so shaky that the production lost its planned climax. The final battle days were canceled for budget reasons, and Mattel helped get the movie over the line by waiving the rest of Cannon’s rights payment so Goddard could shoot the ending. In other words, the last He-Man/Skeletor showdown exists because somebody made a panicked phone deal.

Masters of the Universe got its hooks in me early and never really let go. I was four, already obsessed with the He-Man cartoon, and this was one of the first movies I remember being excited to see in a theater. It became one of those repeat-rental staples in my family too. Any time we couldn’t decide on a movie, or nothing new looked especially exciting, we’d default to Masters of the Universe. I’ve come back to it every couple of years for most of my life, and it still scratches the same itch. Even now, after all these years and a few dozen viewings, it still puts a huge grin on my face.

By now, I know the movie’s weak spots by heart. It opens like we missed an entire first chapter, with Skeletor already in control and the heroes scrambling to recover from a defeat we never got to watch. Then it gets off Eternia much faster than it should and brings the story to Earth. That thrilled me as a kid because it made He-Man feel a little more real, but now clearly reads as Cannon pinching pennies. I see the compromises more clearly every time I revisit it. I also see Langella stomping in with full mythic-villain conviction, the score doing a ton of heavy lifting, and a movie that keeps selling its biggest moments with pure sincerity even with the patchwork showing through.

That’s what still works for me. The mercenaries are ridiculous, a mix of one bad source-material translation and new goons who feel reverse-engineered from somebody half-remembering what made Star Wars cool. Lundgren looks exactly right and acts with all the nuance of expensive lawn equipment. None of that sinks it. If anything, that flawed but unmistakable quality is part of what keeps me coming back. I can see where the money ran out, where the writing cheats, and where the performances vary wildly from scene to scene. I just happen to love the movie anyway. I’ve never needed it to be pristine for it to feel like mine.

Symptoms & Diagnosis

Narrative Onset Dislocation: The movie opens like we showed up after the real first act already ended. Skeletor has taken Grayskull, the Sorceress is captured, and the heroes are already reacting to a defeat we never got to see. It gives the whole thing an odd, midstream feeling right out of the gate. The movie never fully recovers from that missing chapter, because you can always feel the larger, more dramatically satisfying version of this story hovering just offscreen.

Abrupt Realm Relocation Response: Eternia barely has time to register before the movie shifts everything to Earth. The issue is not the fish-out-of-water idea by itself. It’s that the fantasy world feels less like a living setting than a launchpad the movie abandons almost immediately. That move gives the film a strange imbalance, where the part of the movie that should feel biggest winds up functioning mostly as setup.

Antagonist Performance Compensation Syndrome: Frank Langella is operating on a level of gravity, menace, and theatrical control the rest of the movie keeps struggling to match. His Skeletor gives the whole production a center of gravity whenever it starts threatening to come apart. Without him, a lot of this plays like half-finished franchise engineering. With him, it at least feels like somebody showed up believing in myth.

Camp Stabilization Through Sincerity: This movie survives because it never tries to duck its own absurdity. The laser whips, the gilded chandelier Skeletor armor, the hovering police troops, and the cosmic-key nonsense are all played dead straight. That lack of embarrassment turns the cheese into part of the movie’s identity instead of a fatal weakness. It’s still ridiculous, but it’s ridiculous in a way the movie fully commits to, and that commitment buys it more grace than it probably deserves.

These seven do exactly that. They leave the room off-balance and send people home carrying one last ugly thought.

Some spoilers ahead, folks.

1. The Smile Dies - Planet of the Apes (1968)

This is one of the great sick-joke endings in studio movie history. For most of the movie, you’re still operating inside a familiar science-fiction framework. Strange world, power reversal, man out of place, all that good stuff. Then the final image lands and suddenly the whole thing sours. It’s bigger, crueler, and much uglier than the movie had been letting on.

What I love most about this ending is how fast it changes the emotional weather. There is no victory to hold onto. No real comfort. Just a giant cosmic punchline at humanity’s expense. It leaves you sitting there with a specific feeling of being both impressed and vaguely insulted.

2. What’s Left - Se7en (1995)

A lot of endings are bleak. Some feel rotten. This one is straight-up contaminated. You don’t walk out of Se7en thinking about justice or resolution or any of the usual crime-thriller machinery. You walk out thinking about damage. About the last ugly piece clicking into place. About Morgan Freeman’s face realizing exactly how badly this is going to sit in the soul.

That’s why the ending still works so well. It hits like a hammer and leaves everybody sitting in the wreckage. We’ve all seen plenty of dark endings. Very few leave behind this specific combination of dread, disgust, and spiritual exhaustion.

3. No Country for Closure - No Country for Old Men (2007)

This one refuses to give people the kind of ending they’ve been trained to expect. No cathartic showdown. No neat final accounting. No big, satisfying release valve. Instead, the movie drifts into something older, sadder, and more honest about violence than most crime movies ever dare to be.

By the time Tommy Lee Jones is talking about his dreams, the movie has already taken the floor out from under you. That’s the whole point. The ending isn’t interested in wrapping up the chase. It’s sitting with age, helplessness, and the realization that the world doesn’t care whether you were ready for it. You leave the theater less thrilled than hollowed out.

4. The Last Look - The Thing (1982)

This is one of my favorite endings in horror because it has zero need to scream. It just sits there and lets paranoia finish the job. The whole movie has been tightening that screw scene by scene, and then Carpenter leaves you with two exhausted men, a pile of ashes, and one of the greatest trust exercises in cinema history. Or anti-trust exercises, more accurately.

What makes it so effective is how little it gives away while still giving you everything you need. Suspicion has completely replaced certainty. Survival barely counts as a win. Even the silence feels dangerous. The movie ends, but your brain keeps running the same awful question in circles.

5. The Smile at the End - Hereditary (2018)

Ari Aster ends Hereditary on a note so foul it almost feels ceremonial. By that point the movie has already dragged you through grief, panic, family collapse, and enough psychic damage to last a decade. Then the ending arrives and strips away any last illusion that this thing might land somewhere human.

That is what makes the feeling so strange afterward. People are not only horrified. They’re rattled by how complete it is. Instead of evil sneaking away, it plants a flag. The last stretch has that rare quality where the movie stops feeling mean in a fun horror-movie way and starts feeling cosmically disrespectful.

6. The Sack and the Wire - Oldboy (2003)

There are sad endings, shocking endings, and then there are endings that make you want to sit catatonically in a cold shower for a while. Oldboy belongs in that third category. By the time it reaches the last leg, the movie has shifted from revenge thriller into something putrid and pitiless. The revelations not only reframe the entire story; they leave it spiritually poisoned.

What really makes the ending linger is that Park Chan-wook doesn’t let anybody off the hook, including you. The emotional aftermath is artfully crafted and intentional. Instead of leaving hopped up on adrenaline, you are leaving with this sick, heavy aftertaste and the understanding that the movie followed its own brutality to the bitter end.

7. The Sound in the Bag - Audition (1999)

This is the one I would use to send a room home in silence. Audition spends so much time training you to settle into one kind of movie that when it turns, it feels less like a twist and more like the floor giving way. By the end, Miike has dragged the whole thing into a waking nightmare built out of desire, loneliness, humiliation, and revenge.

Then, you’re just stuck there with it. The image of the bag. The sounds. The needles. The awful intimacy of it. There are gorier endings, louder endings, more chaotic endings. Very few leave behind this particular kind of psychic residue. It gets under your skin and stays there.

These are the endings that don’t wash off. Let me know which movies sent you home in a weird fog, because there are still a few absolute monsters sitting just outside this list.

The second they show up, the center of gravity shifts. You may still be following the plot, but part of your brain is now waiting for that person to come back and do one more lap around everybody else.

1. Quint - Jaws (1975)

I could write about Quint all day. He is one of my favorite performances in any movie, and since Jaws is my favorite movie, he was always going to make this list. Robert Shaw gives Quint a haunted, weathered presence that changes the whole film once he fully steps into it. The boat feels smaller. The ocean feels meaner.

Then comes the U.S.S. Indianapolis speech, which I honestly think is one of the greatest monologues ever delivered in any medium. Shaw does not oversell it. He just tells a story about terror, helplessness, and waiting to be eaten alive. If the terror had only been circling before that, Quint makes it impossible to escape.

2. Col. Hans Landa - Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Hans Landa is a Nazi piece of shit. Absolute filth. And Christoph Waltz still makes him one of the most magnetic people in the entire movie. That is what makes the performance so unsettling. He gets laughs out of you, then makes you hate yourself a little for giving them to him.

He hijacks the film without ever needing to raise his voice much. He just walks in, starts talking, and owns the room. Waltz earned that Oscar because he made Landa funny, charming, weird, and terrifying all at once without ever softening what he is.

3. Brick Top - Snatch (2000)

Brick Top shows up in Snatch and basically steals the movie by force. This film is loaded with quotable characters, and somehow he still walks away with a huge chunk of the lines everybody remembers first. He is not slick or glamorous. He just feels like pure everyday menace.

That is what makes Alan Ford so good here. He had already put in years as a British character actor, and you can feel that mileage in the performance. He does not play Brick Top like a flashy gangster. He plays him like a man who says horrible things so casually they barely register as threats anymore.

4. Ruby Rhod - The Fifth Element (1997)

Chris Tucker had already become known for a certain loud comic energy, but Ruby Rhod feels like the role that let him turn it into something way more memorable. Luc Besson gave him the perfect sandbox for it. Ruby is an androgynous, sex-crazed future-media peacock, and Tucker commits so hard that he stops feeling like a side joke and starts feeling essential.

Every time Ruby shows up, the movie gets louder, stranger, and more fun. He also gets some of the most quotable moments in the whole film. For me, this is still Tucker’s most memorable role.

5. Jennifer Jolie - Scream 3 (2000)

I love Scream 3. I know a lot of people rank it near the bottom of the series, but Parker Posey is a huge reason it works for me. Jennifer Jolie is already funny on paper, but Posey turns her into this gloriously needy actress who follows Gale Weathers around like she is preparing for the role of a lifetime in a sequel already bracing for backlash.

That extra layer of meta nonsense is perfect for Scream. Posey plays Jennifer as vain, ridiculous, weirdly sharp, and consistently hilarious. She does not feel like a throwaway joke. She feels like one of the main reasons the movie is still so fun to defend.

6. Frank Booth - Blue Velvet (1986)

Frank Booth is basically the part of Blue Velvet that burns itself into your brain and refuses to leave. He is the movie’s walking nightmare: pure evil, total basket case, and the force that turns the whole film rancid. He feels bigger than the plot around him, like Lynch pulled the movie’s ugliest impulses into human form and handed Dennis Hopper the keys.

Dennis Hopper was a perfect choice because almost nobody could play this kind of instability with such grotesque force. The performance is funny, terrifying, and somehow still magnetic. Frank comes to define the danger of the entire movie, not just because of what he does, but because of the foul charge Hopper brings into every second he’s on screen.

These characters are not the main event on paper. Good luck remembering that after the movie ends. Let me know which supporting-role thief I left out, because there have to be near-infinite maniacs, weirdos, and all-timers waiting in the wings.
