While we were in Loggos, Paxoi, having dinner at Ο Γιος (O Gios), Angelina, the owner, stopped by our table.

“On Friday, we’re having a bouzouki night. Shall I reserve a table for you?”

“Yes!” Karen interjected enthusiastically, before I had time to consider the possible consequences.

Oh boy, I thought.

There was another detail that should have concerned me.

Karen was reading Nikos Kazantzakis’s Zorba the Greek during the trip.

Zorba in her head and a live bouzouki within reach was not a harmless cultural combination.

It was potentially lethal.

Friday arrived.

And guess where Angelina had seated us?

Πρώτο τραπέζι πίστα.

Proto trapezi pista.

The first table beside the musicians. The table of honor. Close enough to touch the bouzouki, make direct eye contact with the singer, and become part of the evening whether you had intended to or not.

In Greece, πρώτο τραπέζι πίστα is not merely good seating.

It is a position of responsibility.

There is nowhere to hide. You cannot quietly enjoy the music from a safe distance. The musicians can see whether you are singing, clapping, drinking, smiling, or failing to display the appropriate level of emotional commitment.

We were within touching distance.

Oh boy, I thought again.

Here we go.

Karen was already moving in her chair.

First one foot.

Then both shoulders.

Then came the unmistakable expression of a woman seriously considering whether she should jump up and join the Greeks and ξένοι (ksenoi) already dancing.

There was no dance floor, exactly.

People danced beside the tables, between tables, around chairs, and wherever a few inches of space became available. Greeks and foreigners rubbed shoulders, exchanged smiles, lost track of whose table was whose, and somehow kept moving without knocking over the wine.

Karen looked ready to enter the traffic.

There were only two problems.

Karen does not know how to dance Greek dances.

And she had not yet consumed enough wine to believe otherwise.

Her movements became more decisive. Then her hands joined in, as though some private agreement had been reached between Karen and the orchestra.

The orchestra had not been consulted.

For one brief and slightly alarming moment, I thought she might actually stand up.

That was when I realized:

Η Κάρεν μερακλώθηκε.

I Karen meraklothike.

Karen had become μερακλωμένη (meraklomeni).

And the remarkable part was that this happened before the couple of glasses of wine.

The wine cannot be blamed.

The bouzouki acted alone.

Greek has many words for feelings that English can describe but never quite capture, and μερακλώνω (meraklono) is one of them.

The dictionary will tell you that it means becoming overcome by an intense, pleasurable feeling that makes you want to drink, sing, or dance.

That is technically correct.

It is also hopelessly inadequate.

“Excited” is too mild.

“In the mood” sounds as though you made a calm, informed decision.

“Carried away” comes closer, but still suggests that you might return at any moment.

When you μερακλώνεσαι (meraklonese), you do not merely enjoy the music.

The music gets inside you.

It bypasses caution, experience, and any honest assessment of your dancing ability. Suddenly your body knows things you have never learned, and your face takes on the confidence of someone who has been performing Greek dances since childhood.

Greek, naturally, gives us several ways to describe what has happened.

Μεράκλωσα (meraklosa) is the confession:

I got swept up in it.

Μερακλώθηκα (meraklothika) is closer to the alibi:

The music did this to me.

Μερακλωμένος (meraklomenos) is the man who is now fully under the influence of the moment.

Μερακλωμένη (meraklomeni) is the woman who has reached the same condition.

You do not need a grammar lesson to understand how they work.

Μεράκλωσα is what you say about yourself.

Μερακλωμένος is what your friends call you when you begin singing louder than the musicians.

Μερακλωμένη is what your husband calls you when you appear ready to join a dance whose steps you have never seen before.

And μερακλώθηκα is what you say the following morning when someone shows you the video.

There are, of course, different levels of μεράκλωμα (merakloma).

Karen was still at the introductory level: enthusiastic movement, premature confidence, and no formal training whatsoever.

More advanced cases apparently require furniture.

In one viral video, a man became so swept up in his zeibekiko that dancing with only his own body no longer seemed sufficiently expressive.

So he held a table in his teeth.

There was a chair balanced on top of it.

That is no longer simply enjoying the music.

That is providing dental support to the hospitality industry.

In Crete, an older gentleman dancing the Maleviziotis also decided that the floor lacked ambition. He continued first on a chair and then balanced on a bottle while the crowd applauded.

And at a panigiri in Geraki, Laconia, ordinary bouquets were judged hopelessly inadequate. Someone arrived with a forklift carrying one hundred kilograms of carnations and released them over the singer and the dancing crowd.

At that point, the music has not merely entered you.

It has taken control of local supply-chain operations.

Karen, thankfully, never progressed to furniture or agricultural machinery.

Then again, there were those famous sheep near Almyros that wandered into a medical-cannabis greenhouse and later began jumping higher than goats.

The sheep had a chemical explanation.

Karen had Kazantzakis and a bouzouki.

But something more than a funny Greek word was revealing itself that night.

Karen has gradually been becoming more Greek.

Not through paperwork.

Not through residency cards.

Certainly not by memorizing Greek verb endings.

It has happened through food, music, neighbors, shopkeepers, tavernas, and all the small moments for which no government office can issue a certificate.

The New Yorker who once examined unfamiliar Greek dishes with understandable suspicion now eats vlita, saganaki, marinated sardines, and sea urchins.

She understands that dinner may begin much later than originally announced.

She knows that an invitation for “one quick coffee” is not a reliable measurement of time.

And now, apparently, a few chapters of Kazantzakis followed by a live bouzouki can awaken parts of her personality that had remained dormant for years.

She did not understand all the lyrics that night.

She did not know the dance steps.

None of that mattered.

The music had already translated itself.

Perhaps that is what μερακλώνω really describes.

It is the moment when understanding is no longer necessary. The feeling arrives whole, without subtitles, and suddenly you are no longer watching from the outside.

Karen never did get up to dance.

Perhaps wisdom prevailed.

Perhaps she remembered that Greek dancing involves timing, direction, and occasionally an entire line of people depending upon you not to improvise.

Perhaps the chair sensed danger and refused to release her.

But for those few minutes at Ο Γιος, Karen was no longer the New Yorker quietly watching the Greeks dance.

She had crossed the line from observer to participant.

She was μερακλωμένη.

A few days later, back in Kalamata, I caught her secretly searching for Greek dance lessons.

Oh boy.

Apparently, Zorba was not finished with her.

Today, while still in Paxoi, we decided to leave Loggos for a few hours and visit Lakka.

Lakka is busier than Loggos. More commercialized. More built up. And its harbor is much, much larger.

We walked along the waterfront, followed the road toward the lighthouse, and stopped repeatedly to take photographs—as people carrying cameras aka phones are legally required to do whenever they encounter a lighthouse.

Eventually, we wandered back into town for coffee and a croissant.

We have to admit something.

The croissant in Lakka was much better than the one in Loggos.

This may not sound important, but we had now conducted extensive research involving two croissants in two villages. We felt qualified to publish our findings.

There is one slightly sad thing about bakeries nowadays.

Early one morning in Loggos, around 6:20, I watched a van delivering trays of baked goods. The bakery itself was still closed. Natasha did not arrive to open the shop until around 7:30.

The croissants, bread, and other pastries had apparently been baked somewhere else—in some large, nondescript central baking facility—and then distributed to the individual shops.

Efficient?

Certainly.

Romantic?

Not even slightly.

One of the things I love about Kalamata is that bakeries still smell like bakeries. You can walk through the city early in the morning and suddenly find yourself surrounded by the smell of fresh bread, pastries, and whatever magnificent baked item is currently destroying your plans to eat sensibly.

But I have wandered away from the story.

This happens frequently.

After our coffee, Karen and I continued through Lakka’s narrow cobblestone streets.

Then Karen spotted a shop selling pareos.

A pareo is one of her favorite things once summer arrives. Apparently, a person can never own too many lightweight pieces of fabric to wrap around herself near the sea.

“Same price as in Loggos,” she announced, examining one.

Shhhh 🤫!

Nobody tell her it was the same store as the one in Loggos.

We continued walking.

A few minutes later, she spotted another shop.

This time, she found something she liked.

A man was walking out as I stood near the entrance, waiting for the inevitable conclusion.

“I’m only here to pay for whatever the customer chooses,” I told him, pointing toward my wife.

He nodded knowingly.

This was clearly not his first time observing the system.

Then came paying time.

“Forty euros with a card,” the shopkeeper said. “Thirty-five cash.”

For Americans, this requires a small tax explanation.

In the United States, the price on the tag usually does not include sales tax. The tax is added when you reach the register, allowing you to discover that the item you carefully calculated you could afford costs slightly more than the money you actually have.

In Greece, VAT—Value Added Tax—is already included in the displayed price.

There is no surprise at the register.

For clothing, the standard VAT rate is a steep 24 percent. The forty-euro price already includes it.

Now, I am not suggesting that the five-euro cash discount represented exactly five euros of VAT.

It did not.

The arithmetic is more complicated, and I had neither my calculator nor an appointment with her accountant.

But the unofficial calculation of the moment was much simpler.

She saves five euros.

We save five euros.

Give and take.

It is a commercial transaction, after all.

I handed her a fifty-euro note.

She took it, smiled, and rubbed the banknote lightly over the top of her head, as if spreading its luck around.

“Κάναμε σεφτέ;” (Kaname sefte?—Did we make your first sale of the day?) I asked.

Her face lit up.

She nodded repeatedly.

“You remember!” she said.

After being away for thirty years.

“Of course I remember.”

And there it was.

Σεφτές (seftes).

A small Greek word carrying an entire shopkeeper’s morning inside it.

The word came into Greek from the Turkish siftah, meaning the first sale of the day—the transaction that officially opens the business.

To κάνω σεφτέ (kano sefte) means to make that first sale.

Έκανα σεφτέ (ekana sefte) means, “I made my first sale.”

Κάναμε σεφτέ (kaname sefte) means, “We made the first sale.”

And somehow the customer gets included in the accomplishment.

The shopkeeper may own the store, but it takes two people to make a sefte.

One to sell.

And one to stand near the door holding the wallet.

The first sale matters because it breaks the silence of the day.

Until then, the shop has been open but waiting. People may have walked past. They may have looked through the window, touched the merchandise, asked the price, and then announced that they would return later—which everyone knows is the international tourist expression for “You will never see me again.”

Then someone finally buys something.

The day has begun.

The first money is often treated as lucky money. A shopkeeper may touch it to the forehead or the top of the head, tap it against the counter, or briefly pass it over the merchandise—as if spreading the good fortune around and encouraging the remaining goods to follow its example.

One sale should bring another.

And another.

A little commerce.

A little hope.

A little superstition.

All performed so naturally that nobody stops to explain it.

Unless, of course, an American wife is standing nearby wondering why the woman who just sold her something is tapping a fifty-euro note against her head.

Karen looked at me.

“What did she do?”

“We made her sefte,” I explained. “Our purchase was her first sale today.”

Karen smiled.

She had not merely bought another summer outfit.

She had officially opened the Lakka economy.

The transaction itself had been completely modern.

A tourist shop on a Greek island. Imported summer clothing. Forty euros by card or thirty-five in cash. VAT, card machines, receipts, and all the machinery of modern commerce.

Then the shopkeeper touched that first banknote to her head.

For one second, the modern store disappeared.

I could have been standing behind almost any shop counter in Greece during my childhood.

Thirty years away, and I did not have to search for the word or translate the gesture.

I saw the banknote touch her head and immediately asked:

“Κάναμε σεφτέ;”

Some Greek words do not need to be remembered.

They simply wait.

Karen made the first purchase of the day.

I was only there to finance it.

When I announced to Karen that I had found us a place to stay in Paxoi for a few days and asked whether she wanted to go, guess what happened?

I became her hero.

Paxoi was not just another Greek island to Karen.

She had fallen in love with it while watching Maestro in Blue, the Greek television drama filmed largely on the island. For anyone who has not seen the series, Paxoi is practically another member of the cast: tiny harbors, stone houses, narrow streets, olive trees, turquoise water, and scenery so beautiful that you stop watching the actors and start checking ferry schedules.

Karen loved the show.

Not casually.

She wanted to walk through the villages she had seen on the screen, swim in that impossible blue water, and visit the famous Blue Caves.

And I had made it happen.

Hero.

One Sunday afternoon, however, I had become the man who brought his wife all the way to Paxoi only to discover that the house he had rented was actually somewhere else…

Zero.

Before the day was over, with considerable assistance from half of Loggos and an 84-year-old yiayia named Sofia, I had managed to find us somewhere to stay.

Heros status: partially restored.

In marriage, this is sometimes the best recovery available.

But let me start at the beginning.

We arrived in Paxoi on a sunny Sunday with our car, our luggage, and the comforting belief that we had somewhere to sleep only a few steps from the crystal-clear Ionian Sea.

Our host had sent us directions.

There was only one small problem.

Google Maps said it would take six hours and fourteen minutes to reach the house.

This was after we had already disembarked from the ferry that had carried us over from Igoumenitsa.

Six hours and fourteen minutes to reach a rental supposedly located on an island you can drive across in about twenty-two.

Naturally, I dismissed Google Maps.

Then I dismissed Apple Maps.

Then I dismissed every electronic voice whispering into the car:

“Something is wrong.”

We are human beings.

We know better than satellites.

And I am Greek.

Greeks never panic.

We simply ignore all available evidence until the evidence becomes personal.

We drove to Loggos, the beautiful little harbor village where we believed our rental was located, and began searching.

Up one road.

Down another.

Around the same corner.

Back again.

We passed the same couple sitting outside several times. They laughed a little harder each time we drove by.

Texts went back and forth with the host.

“Are you near this?”

“Do you see that?”

“Did you pass the other thing?”

We saw many things.

Unfortunately, none of them looked like the house in the photograph.

Then I turned to Karen.

“I think I know where it is.”

This sentence has preceded several questionable decisions during our marriage.

“The house is by the water,” I said. “We passed a sign pointing toward a beach.”

The logic was flawless.

House by water.

Beach has water.

Therefore: house.

We followed the sign.

The road quickly narrowed into something that could generously be described as a goat path.

A man driving behind us explained that there was a parking area around the corner, approximately half a kilometer farther down.

Half a kilometer along a road apparently designed for goats who had recently lost weight.

We continued, found the parking area, and stopped.

Then I approached the people in the car behind us.

“Are you local?” I asked.

“Yes.”

Excellent.

I showed them the photograph.

“Do you recognize this house?”

They studied it carefully.

“No. It doesn’t ring a bell.”

This was not the answer I had hoped for.

“Would you mind speaking to the host? Maybe he can explain exactly where it is.”

The man kindly took my phone.

He spoke with the host and asked several questions.

“Do you know this place?”

“Is it near that?”

“Past the other thing?”

Then he nodded slowly and handed the phone back to me.

He had the expression of a man who had just learned something important but did not wish to be standing nearby when I learned it too.

The host came back on the line.

He asked one very simple question.

“Are you in Paxoi?”

“Yes!” I replied enthusiastically.

There was a pause.

“The house you rented is outside Aigio, near Patras.”

Another pause.

“It is about six hours away, including the ferry.”

Or, depending on your level of commitment, one extremely long swim.

Wait.

What?

I had booked the wrong house.

Not the wrong village.

Not the wrong side of Paxoi.

Not even the wrong Ionian island.

I had rented us a house on mainland Greece, near Aigio, hundreds of kilometers away.

In my defense—and I am clinging tightly to this defense—Greece has seven places called some version of Loggos or Longos: in Achaia, Fokida, Trikala, Fthiotida, Kefalonia, Ilia, and Paxoi. In Greek, a tiny accent mark offers at least some warning. The village in Paxoi is Λογγός (Loggós), while the one near Aigio is Λόγγος (Lóngos). In English, even that warning disappears. Both become Loggos—or Longos, depending on who is spelling it. No accent. No distinction. Just six hours, one ferry ride, and the complete collapse of my hero status.

Google Maps had not malfunctioned.

Google Maps had been desperately trying to save me.

For hours, two of the world’s largest technology companies had been shouting:

“Nick, you have made a terrible mistake.”

And I had responded by repeatedly pressing Dismiss.

Karen was devastated.

This was supposed to be her Maestro in Blue pilgrimage.

The villages.

The turquoise sea.

The Blue Caves.

The dream lasted approximately forty-nine minutes after we arrived at the port of Gaios.

Then we discovered that our accommodation was near Patras.

We sat silently in the car.

Neither of us moved.

There are moments in a marriage when words are unnecessary.

There are also moments when the husband understands that words may be physically dangerous.

I stepped out and looked around, hoping for divine intervention.

Nothing.

I began walking slowly along the promenade.

From the corner of my eye, I noticed a small shop selling women’s clothes.

Le Pareo.

It looked cheerful.

Cheerful seemed useful.

“I’ll be right back,” I told Karen.

“Please stay here.”

I entered the shop and met Ioanna, a lovely woman with a warm smile.

“How can I help you?” she asked.

This was her first mistake.

I told her the entire sad story.

The ferry.

The six-hour directions.

The goat path.

The host.

Aigio.

Ioanna immediately sprang into action.

“Let me see what I can find.”

She began making calls while apologizing for keeping me waiting.

Apologizing.

To me.

The man who had arrived on an island without actually booking a room on the island.

The first few calls produced nothing.

It was July.

It was Paxoi.

It was Sunday afternoon.

Everything was booked.

Of course everything was booked.

After a while, I glanced through the shop window.

Karen was no longer in the car.

She was walking slowly into the sea with all her clothes on.

She was already knee-deep and moving forward with the expression of a woman who had concluded that the Ionian Sea might offer better accommodation than her husband had arranged.

The emergency bells started ringing.

This was no longer simply a booking problem.

This had become a rescue operation.

Ioanna did not give up.

“Follow me,” she said.

We walked down the narrow street until she spotted an older woman sitting on a veranda, drinking cold lemonade.

“Maria!” she called. “Do you have anything available?”

Maria thought about it.

“I don’t know. Call this number. Speak to Dionysia. She handles the reservations.”

We called Dionysia.

Dionysia was unavailable because she had an urgent matter to attend to.

Back to square one.

Then Ioanna spotted a black van marked VIP Tours and waved it down.

The van stopped.

Inside was another Dionysia.

We were in the Ionian Islands.

At some point, Dionysia, Dionysis, and Nionios stop being names and become part of the local infrastructure.

“Do you know of anything available?” Ioanna asked.

The second Dionysia considered the problem.

“Christina, Sofia’s daughter, is sitting over there. I’ll ask her to come.”

Christina appeared.

Then all of us walked to Sofia’s Studios.

Sofia herself was resting.

It was 3:42 in the afternoon, the proper time in Greece for sensible people to be resting—not wandering around an island searching for a house they had rented near Patras.

Eventually, Sofia emerged.

She had something available.

The room was modest.

Perhaps not exactly what Karen or I had imagined when planning our island holiday.

But this was not the moment to inspect decorative pillows, debate bathroom fixtures, or inquire about the thread count of the sheets.

A deal was made.

Money changed hands.

Keys were placed in mine.

We were going to sleep in Paxoi after all.

I had not fully regained my hero status.

Let us not exaggerate.

But I had recovered enough points to become a mini hero.

More importantly, Karen was no longer walking into the sea.

Over the next few days, we experienced the island she had dreamed about.

We wandered through its villages and harbors.

We took a boat out on the water.

We saw the extraordinary colors of the Ionian Sea and the scenery that had made Karen fall in love with Paxoi while watching television from our home in Kalamata.

And yes, we visited the Blue Caves.

They were magnificent.

There is much more to share about the boat rides, the roads, the food, and the places we discovered.

But the most memorable part of the trip was not a cave, a beach, or a television location.

It was the people we met because everything had gone wrong.

Ioanna did not know us.

She had a shop to run.

Instead, she began calling everyone she knew.

Maria was enjoying lemonade in the shade.

She joined the search.

One Dionysia was unavailable, so another appeared in a black van.

Christina left whatever she had been doing and walked us to her mother’s studios.

Nobody said:

“This is not my problem.”

They treated us less like confused tourists and more like relatives who had arrived unexpectedly and needed to be sorted out.

Karen had come looking for the characters of Maestro in Blue.

In Loggos, it felt as though they had stepped off the screen.

Not because there was dramatic music playing in the background or because everyone looked ready for a close-up.

It was because they were considerate, involved, curious, generous, and determined to help.

They behaved like family.

And then there was Yiayia Sofia.

She was 84 years old and had lost her husband forty-five years earlier.

She managed a few apartments, spent part of the year in Corfu, coped with her own health problems, and shared her life with a cat named Kritakis.

Over the following days, I spent hours talking with her.

We spoke about her husband.

Her children.

Her health.

The island.

Living alone.

Growing older.

Continuing after loss.

She had the directness of someone who had lived too long to waste time decorating the truth.

There was no grand speech about resilience.

No carefully packaged philosophy.

No inspirational slogan hanging on the wall.

There was simply Sofia.

Weathered, practical, funny, opinionated, and still standing.

Life had happened to her.

Some of it had been good.

Some of it had been cruel.

And she had continued.

Kritakis wandered around while we talked, occasionally looking at us as though he had already heard all of Sofia’s stories and disagreed with several details.

We had gone to Paxoi searching for the island of Maestro in Blue.

We found the turquoise water, the picturesque harbors, the narrow streets, and the scenery Karen had loved on the screen.

But we also found something more important.

The real cast.

Ioanna.

Maria.

Two Dionysias.

Christina.

Yiayia Sofia.

And Kritakis, who probably considered himself the star.

None of it would have happened had I booked the correct accommodation.

Had our original rental actually been in Loggos, we would have checked in, unpacked, and gone looking for dinner.

We would never have entered Le Pareo.

Maria would have continued drinking her lemonade in peace.

The second Dionysia would have driven past us in her black van.

Christina would not have walked us to Sofia’s Studios.

And we would never have met Yiayia Sofia.

Sometimes the mistake becomes the trip.

Sometimes the wrong booking takes you exactly where you were supposed to go.

I began the journey as Karen’s hero.

By Sunday afternoon, I was the man who had rented a house near Patras for a holiday in Paxoi.

Zero.

Then, with the help of an entire village, I managed to keep the holiday—and possibly my marriage—afloat.

To sum things up.

Perdika overlooking Syvota: correct.
Lefkada: correct.
Loggos: catastrophic failure, followed by an improbable recovery.

Two out of three, plus one rescue operation. Surely that was enough to restore me to mini hero status.

Not quite the triumphant ending I had imagined.

But enough to keep Karen out of the sea.

Although, for the record, next time I will make sure our accommodation is on the same island before we board the ferry.

Maybe even twice.

You go to the bank.

Not because you particularly want to go to the bank. Nobody wakes up, stretches, looks outside at the beautiful Greek sunshine, and thinks:

“What a wonderful morning. I should spend it discussing banking regulations.”

But something needs to be signed, activated, transferred, verified, stamped, unstamped, or approved by someone in Athens.

You walk in and look for your “friendly banker.”

In Greece, you do not always have a banker in the official sense.

You have your person.

The person who helped you last time. The person who remembers which document was missing. The person who knows the mysterious department in Athens that must approve the perfectly reasonable thing you are trying to do.

Your banker sees you from across the room.

“Nick!”

There is a wave. A smile. Perhaps an apology because another customer is still sitting beside the desk.

“You’ll have to wait a few minutes.”

Then, before you have even found a chair, comes the first question:

Να κεράσω κάτι; (Na kerásō káti? — Can I offer you something?)

Coffee?

Water?

Something cold?

This is not yet the official banking appointment.

This is the beverage offered while you wait for the official banking appointment.

You politely decline.

“No, no. I’m fine.”

In America, that might end the conversation.

In Greece, your first refusal is sometimes treated as preliminary information.

“Are you sure? A coffee?”

“No, thank you.”

“Water?”

“I’m fine.”

“Something cold?”

Apparently, dehydration remains a serious concern.

Eventually, the customer before you leaves, hopefully with their banking problem solved—or at least transferred to the correct mysterious person in Athens.

Your banker calls you over.

You are fitted into the available chair beside the desk. Greek offices have a remarkable ability to accommodate one more person, one more chair, one more relative, and occasionally one small dog.

You sit down.

You take out your passport, tax number, residence permit, phone, and the folder containing every document issued to you since birth.

Your banker opens the computer.

But before any actual banking can begin, comes the second question:

Να κεράσω; (Na kerásō? — Shall I treat you?)

Another coffee?

This is a completely separate offer from the coffee you were offered twenty-three minutes earlier.

The first was the waiting coffee.

This is the banking coffee.

Different stage of the visit.

Different jurisdiction.

You may have successfully avoided the first one, but now you are sitting beside the banker. The negotiations have become more serious.

Perhaps you accept.

“Okay. A Greek coffee. Μέτριο (métrio — medium sweet).”

The banking process begins.

There are passwords.

There are photocopies.

There is a verification text that never arrives.

There is a phone call to Athens.

There is a second phone call to Athens because the first person in Athens was apparently not the correct person in Athens.

Meanwhile, your coffee arrives immediately.

The banking matter may require forty-five minutes, three departments, and divine intervention.

The hospitality system operates with impressive efficiency.

Eventually, the form is signed, the account is activated, or your request is sent somewhere for further examination by people you will never meet.

You leave the bank feeling victorious.

You also leave carrying enough caffeine to power a small fishing boat.

Now you continue your errands.

A few minutes later, you walk through the neighborhood and pass My Mini Market.

Dimitris sees you.

“Nick!”

You stop to say hello.

This is your first mistake.

Not because you do not want to see Dimitris. Dimitris is always friendly.

But in Greece, stopping to say hello can unexpectedly become a social engagement.

You exchange the usual information.

How are you?

How is Karen?

Where have you been?

Where are you going?

Is it hot enough for you?

Then comes the question:

Να κεράσω;

Coffee?

A beer?

A tsipouro?

Something small?

The time of day is not always as relevant as you might expect.

It could be ten thirty in the morning.

Coffee is perfectly normal.

Beer is possible.

Tsipouro is not entirely out of the question.

You explain that you have already had a coffee at the bank.

Dimitris looks at you as though this is interesting information but not particularly relevant.

“So? Have another one.”

This is Greece.

The existence of one coffee does not automatically disqualify the next coffee.

You decline.

Or perhaps you negotiate your way down to a bottle of water, believing you have found a safe compromise.

Then you walk another hundred meters.

A neighbor is sitting outside.

“Nick! Come and sit for a minute.”

A minute is a flexible unit of time in Greece.

You sit.

Να κεράσω κάτι;

There it is again.

You have now been outside for ninety minutes.

You have completed one errand.

You have been offered four drinks.

And you are not even halfway through the neighborhood.

The verb is κερνάω (kernáō — to treat or offer someone something).

The treat itself is a κέρασμα (kérasma).

It might be a coffee, a drink, a sweet, an ice cream, a slice of cake, or something else placed in front of you before you have fully understood what is happening.

And Να κεράσω; (Na kerásō?) means:

“Shall I treat you?”

“Can I offer you something?”

“Let me get you a drink.”

But the English translation does not completely capture it.

A κέρασμα is not merely a commercial transaction in which one person pays for another person’s beverage.

It is a gesture.

It says:

You are welcome here.

Sit down.

Stay for a little while.

Let me do something for you.

You are not simply passing through unnoticed.

Sometimes it is offered by a close friend.

Sometimes by a shopkeeper.

Sometimes by a neighbor.

Sometimes by a banker.

Sometimes by a person you have met only twice but who has already decided that your relationship has reached the coffee stage.

In Greece, hospitality does not always wait for an invitation into someone’s home.

It spills onto pavements, into offices, across shop counters, through courtyards, and onto plastic chairs outside the mini market.

But there are rules.

A κέρασμα comes with its own unwritten etiquette.

Someone offers.

You refuse.

They offer again.

You refuse more politely.

They begin listing alternatives.

“Coffee?”

“No, thank you.”

“Water?”

“I’m fine.”

“A beer?”

“No, really.”

“Tsipouro?”

It is eleven in the morning, but apparently we are now reviewing the complete beverage inventory.

Your first refusal shows that you are polite.

Your second demonstrates that you are not taking advantage of anyone’s generosity.

But eventually, you must accept something.

Not necessarily the coffee.

Not necessarily the beer.

Certainly not always the tsipouro.

You can negotiate your way down to water, juice, or something small.

But you cannot refuse every offer forever.

At some point, repeatedly rejecting the κέρασμα can begin to feel like you are rejecting the person offering it.

They are not merely asking whether you are thirsty.

They are asking you to accept their hospitality.

The polite thing is eventually to let them give it.

This can be difficult for those of us who grew accustomed to believing that the most considerate answer is always:

“No, thank you. I don’t want to trouble you.”

In Greece, refusing too firmly can become the trouble.

There is another very important rule.

Never respond to someone’s κέρασμα by immediately trying to offer one of your own.

Someone says:

Να κεράσω;

You cannot instantly answer:

“No, no. Let me treat you.”

Not yet.

First, you must accept theirs.

You allow that person to be the host, even when the “hosting” is happening beside a bank desk, outside a neighborhood shop, or on two plastic chairs near the pavement.

Your turn will come.

The next coffee can be yours.

The next beer can be yours.

The next time you meet, you may say:

Να κεράσω εγώ; (Na kerásō egō? — Shall I treat this time?)

But first, you receive.

Then, later, you reciprocate.

That is the natural order of the κέρασμα.

Trying to reverse it immediately is not generosity.

It is an attempted escape.

And there is no escape.

At some point, you accept.

Partly because you do not want to offend anyone.

Partly because this is Greece.

And partly because, deep down, you do not really want to escape.

For all the joking, I love hearing those two words.

Να κεράσω;

The halftime show is over.

The Greeks have finished complaining.

Well…

That may be overstating it.

But the players are back on the field, and the second half is underway.

Except there is one small problem.

We already know who won.

At halftime, ELTA was leading 1–0.

Kalamata.

Athens.

Across the Atlantic.

New York.

Same envelope.

Same tracking number.

ELTA had carried the ball from Kalamata all the way to JFK and handed it cleanly to its American delivery partner.

USPS had one job left.

Pennsylvania.

But while our envelope began its American adventure, I went back to something we had discovered before kickoff.

Remember Dr. Ed Weir?

The former Social Security manager whose YouTube video suggested that our envelope might never have needed to leave Kalamata at all?

That sounded almost too ridiculous to be true.

So naturally, I investigated.

And unfortunately for everyone involved…

Dr. Weir appeared to know what he was talking about.

Social Security has something called:

Signature proxy attestation.

That is a wonderfully bureaucratic phrase for something remarkably simple.

A telephone call.

Under Social Security’s procedures, Form SSA-7162—the very form now traveling internationally on our behalf—can be completed this way.

An authorized employee verifies your identity.

Asks the questions.

Obtains your verbal declaration.

And attests your signature.

No envelope crossing an ocean.

No international tracking.

No wondering whether the evidence that you remain among the living has disappeared behind a sorting machine.

And for beneficiaries outside the United States, Federal Benefits Units at U.S. Foreign Service posts can handle the procedure.

Greece has one.

At the U.S. Embassy in Athens.

Excellent.

Problem solved.

I emailed them.

Good afternoon, I am requesting a phone appointment to complete my Foreign Enforcement Questionnaire via physical signature proxy attestation.

I was feeling rather pleased with myself.

We had discovered the secret passage through the bureaucracy.

A telephone call.

A few questions.

Karen and Nick confirmed alive.

Done.

Then the Embassy replied.

The important sentence was this:

“Our office cannot intervene unless your benefits are suspended.”

I read that twice.

Perhaps three times.

Apparently the appropriate time to prevent your Social Security benefits from being suspended is…

after your Social Security benefits have been suspended.

Ah.

Now we were back on familiar bureaucratic ground.

There was also the barcode.

The original 7162, they explained, contains a barcode that cannot be reproduced.

Apparently the barcode was very important.

So important that I briefly wondered whether Social Security was actually trying to determine whether the barcode was still alive.

There was another interesting detail in the Embassy’s response.

The 7162 is mailed every other year.

Every two years?

Apparently Karen and I are only required to prove that we are alive in 2026, 2028, 2030…

Odd-numbered years are apparently unavailable for dying.

Please plan accordingly.

But something still didn’t add up.

The telephone procedure existed.

Social Security’s own instructions described it.

The 7162 was one of the forms that could use it.

And the Federal Benefits Unit was exactly the kind of office authorized to handle it.

Yet Athens was telling me they could not intervene unless our benefits were already in trouble.

Then a friend pointed out something I had completely overlooked.

“Wait. Who witnesses your signature on the form?”

Good question.

I checked.

Nobody.

If I complete the 7162 normally, I sign it myself and mail it back.

No witness.

No Embassy employee.

No Social Security employee watching me sign.

No one standing beside me saying:

“Yes. That is definitely Nick, and he does appear to be alive.”

A witness is required if someone signs with a mark.

But an ordinary signature?

Apparently not.

Which raises a rather interesting question.

If this piece of paper is supposed to confirm that I am alive…

who confirms that I am the person who actually signed the piece of paper?

A friend jokingly took it one step further.

“So I can get your form, sign your name, send it back, and Social Security thinks you’re alive?”

Well, no.

Forging the form would obviously be fraud, and signing my questionnaire would not suddenly give someone access to my Social Security payments.

But his point was difficult to ignore.

By mail, the system receives my signed piece of paper.

On the telephone, an authorized Federal Benefits employee could actually verify who I am, speak to me, ask the questions and hear me personally respond.

And that was the method I was being told we couldn’t use.

Maybe there was another rule.

Maybe there was an exception.

Maybe the procedure designed to bypass the bureaucracy required another bureaucracy before you were allowed to use it.

Entirely possible.

So I wrote back.

SSA had mailed the form on July 2.

We received it in Kalamata on July 20.

We mailed it back on July 21.

ELTA moved it through Athens and across the Atlantic.

By July 25, it had reached Jamaica, New York.

My question was simple.

Would it reach Pennsylvania within the specified 60-day window?

The response arrived.

“The forms are mailed in May each year.”

May.

I looked at our envelope.

Then I looked again.

JUL. 02, 2026.

Well.

That was awkward.

Now, I am not suggesting that July 2 is nowhere near May.

In a broad philosophical sense, they occupy the same general neighborhood of the calendar.

But on the calendar most of us use…

July 2 is not May.

The Embassy continued.

If Social Security did not receive the completed questionnaire, follow-up notices would be sent.

And if those failed too, benefits could eventually be suspended with the February payment.

February.

Excellent.

Plenty of time.

We certainly would not want to rush anyone.

August.

September.

October.

November.

Christmas.

New Year’s.

Perhaps Valentine’s Day.

Give the envelope some room.

It has been through a lot.

And if the original questionnaire never arrived, and the follow-up never arrived, and Social Security eventually concluded that perhaps Karen and Nick had ceased to exist…

then the Embassy could intervene.

Perfect.

First threaten to stop the Social Security.

Then check whether we’re alive.

There is something magnificently bureaucratic about all of this.

A procedure exists that can avoid relying entirely on international mail.

The U.S. government has employees in Athens who handle Social Security matters for people overseas.

I am alive enough to email them.

Alive enough to speak with them.

Alive enough to answer the questions.

But apparently the preferred approach was still to send a piece of paper halfway around the world and see what happened.

So we did.

And what happened?

ELTA did its job.

Spectacularly.

Our envelope left Kalamata on July 21.

Four days later it had traveled through Greece, through Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, across the Atlantic and into New York.

Almost 8,000 kilometers.

America had the ball.

Pennsylvania was roughly another 220 kilometers away.

Surely this was nearly over.

Then the tracking developed…

opinions.

USPS reported:

Processed Through USPS Facility — Jamaica, New York.

And immediately below that:

Inbound Into Customs.

ELTA had a slightly different update.

On July 26 at 18:25:

The item has been retained at Customs.

Ah.

Plot twist.

Perhaps I had been unfair to USPS.

Perhaps USPS was not sitting on our envelope after all.

Perhaps U.S. Customs was sitting on it.

Or perhaps Customs had already handed it back to USPS.

Or perhaps USPS had it but ELTA never received the next update.

At this point, I no longer needed to know exactly where the envelope was.

I simply wanted the United States government to decide.

Who currently has the evidence that Karen and I are alive?

USPS?

Customs?

Some mysterious federal no-man’s-land between the two?

Because as of August 13, the tracking had not moved again.

Eighteen days.

Now, I realize Customs has important work to do.

This was, after all, a suspicious white envelope arriving from Greece.

There could have been anything inside.

Olive oil.

Feta.

Kalamata olives.

A dangerously undeclared koulouraki.

Perhaps some oregano with questionable intentions.

So by all means, inspect it.

Except inside this particular envelope were…

two pieces of paper.

Two Social Security questionnaires.

Destined for the Social Security Administration.

No merchandise.

No commercial value.

Nothing to sell.

Nothing on which to collect import duty.

Just Karen and me informing one branch of the United States government:

YES. WE ARE STILL ALIVE.

And another branch of the United States government apparently saying:

Hold on. We need to look into this.

I can imagine the conversation.

“What’s in the envelope?”

“Documents.”

“What kind?”

“Social Security.”

“What do they say?”

“Two people living in Greece say they’re alive.”

Pause.

“Better hold it.”

So I now have a small request for the United States of America.

You are running out of time.

Please get your act together and decide who has our envelope.

I don’t particularly care whether it is USPS, Customs or somebody sitting at a desk between the two.

Just pick somebody.

Because Social Security is waiting for a piece of paper confirming that Karen and Nick are alive…

while another part of the United States government appears to have possession of the piece of paper confirming that Karen and Nick are alive.

Could you people perhaps have a meeting?

This new development does require a correction to the score.

I had been prepared to declare:

ELTA 4 — USPS 0

But that may no longer be fair.

USPS can now point toward Customs and say:

“Not us.”

Customs can presumably point back toward USPS.

And somewhere between them sits our envelope, quietly regretting the day it ever left Kalamata.

So after reviewing the replay, consulting VAR and examining all available tracking information, the official result is:

ELTA 4 — USA 0

No appeal.

No extra time.

ELTA took an envelope from Kalamata and moved it across Greece and across the Atlantic in four days.

The United States then managed to move it…

into Customs.

And there it remains.

Perhaps being inspected.

Perhaps waiting to be inspected.

Perhaps sitting in a plastic bin underneath a sign saying:

PENNSYLVANIA — EVENTUALLY.

Maybe it has made friends.

Maybe it has applied for residency.

Maybe by the time it reaches Social Security, Karen and I will need to complete another questionnaire confirming that we remained alive while the first questionnaire was traveling.

So, fellow Greeks, perhaps we owe ELTA an apology.

Not a large apology.

Let’s not get carried away.

Maybe a little one.

Because after four parts, thousands of kilometers, two postal systems, an Embassy, Social Security and now U.S. Customs, there is no question who won the match.

ELTA has the trophy.

America has the envelope.

Social Security is waiting for proof that we’re alive.

Somewhere else in the United States government sits the proof that we’re alive.

And Karen and I?

Still here.

Still waiting.

Still alive.

Which brings us back to the most ridiculous part of the entire story.

After the envelopes.

After ELTA.

After USPS.

After Customs.

After Athens.

After New York.

After an entire four-part series devoted to proving that two people in Kalamata had not died…

Social Security had a telephone all along.

Welcome to the halftime show.

ELTA and USPS are in the locker room.

The score:

ELTA 1 — USPS 0

And while the players regroup, we need some live entertainment.

Fortunately, we have Greeks.

Greeks require very little encouragement to provide live entertainment.

All you need is:

A few chairs.

Coffee.

Two or more opinions.

And something—anything—to complain about.

Which brings me back to that roomful of Greeks at the Kalamata post office.

Remember them?

While I waited for my number to be called, the room had gradually turned into an unofficial parliamentary committee discussing the wait, the staffing, the government, and probably several other national emergencies I couldn’t hear from my chair.

At the time, I thought it was simply funny.

Later, I started wondering:

Why do Greeks complain so damn much?

Is it something new?

Did the financial crisis do it to us?

Was it the euro?

Maybe we were happier with the drachma.

Although anyone old enough to remember the drachma will immediately begin another argument.

“Everything was cheaper then.”

“Yes, but we earned 42,000 drachmas a month.”

“You don’t understand economics.”

“And you do?”

Coffee?

Sit down.

We may be here awhile.

Maybe it’s politics.

Maybe bureaucracy.

Taxes.

The municipality.

The electric company.

The government employee who sends you from Window 3 to Window 7, where you discover that Window 7 is closed on Tuesdays.

There is certainly no shortage of material.

And the financial crisis gave us enough to last several generations.

But there’s a problem with blaming 2008.

We were complaining long before 2008.

I know.

I was there.

We complained before the euro.

We complained after the euro.

And for years afterward, we continued converting euros back into drachmas solely to prove how outrageous prices had become.

“Three euros for a coffee?”

Pause for mental calculation.

“That’s more than a thousand drachmas!”

OUTRAGE.

The drachma may have disappeared from circulation, but it remained spiritually available whenever required for an argument.

So I went farther back.

Much farther.

There is an ancient Greek word:

ἀγών (agōn)
Contest

We usually think of it as competition.

But in ancient Greek culture, the contest could also be verbal.

Two sides.

Opposing positions.

Argument.

Challenge.

Debate.

Public argument had a real place in Greek civic life—in the Assembly, the courts, literature, and philosophy.

Now, I am not suggesting that the gentleman complaining about his electricity bill in Kalamata is carrying on an uninterrupted intellectual tradition inherited directly from Socrates.

He may simply be pissed off about his electricity bill.

But still…

The resemblance is irresistible.

The Agora became the:

πλατεία (plateia)
Town square

The symposium got an espresso machine.

And the agōn never really left.

Imagine Socrates without Facebook.

No X.

No comment section.

If he wanted to tell someone he was completely wrong, he had to find him in person.

Plato couldn’t stay home and post:

YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT SOCRATES SAID TODAY!!!

He had to go out.

Meet people.

Talk.

Argue.

Listen.

Disagree.

Perhaps Western philosophy began when one Greek said:

“This is ridiculous.”

And another answered:

“Ridiculous? You haven’t heard anything yet.”

Of course, modern Greece has added plenty of fresh material.

Bureaucracy.

Politics.

The euro.

Football.

The weather.

The neighbors.

And food.

Especially food.

The tomatoes used to taste better.

Nobody makes proper bread anymore.

That restaurant was better before the son took over.

The souvlaki is smaller.

The tzatziki needs garlic.

The other tzatziki has too much garlic.

And never casually announce who makes the best bougatsa unless you have cleared your afternoon.

But maybe what foreigners hear as complaining isn’t always negativity.

Maybe it’s participation.

Picture five Greeks having coffee at a:

Someone asks:

Τι κάνεις; (ti kaneis?)
How are you?

You answer:

Όλα καλά (ola kala)
Everything is fine

Wonderful.

Sip coffee.

Now what?

You’ve killed the conversation.

But lean forward and say:

Άστα να πάνε (asta na pane)
Forget about it

Or better:

Όλα είναι σκατά (ola einai skata)
Everything is shit

Now we have something.

Chairs move closer.

Someone at the next table turns around.

A man who hasn’t said a word for twenty minutes suddenly remembers that his cousin had exactly the same problem in 1994.

“What happened?”

“Who did that?”

“What did you tell him?”

“No, no, no. Listen to me.”

And just like that, your problem belongs to the table.

Problem with the municipality?

Someone knows someone.

Roof leaking?

Someone’s brother is a contractor.

Package disappeared?

Someone’s cousin once mailed something to Germany.

Mother-in-law?

Okay.

Some problems even Greeks cannot solve.

But we’ll still have opinions.

This may explain why a table of Greeks can sound as though civil war is about to break out, yet twenty minutes later everyone is ordering another round of coffees.

Nobody is leaving.

Why would they?

They’re having a perfectly nice time.

There is, however, one important rule foreigners should understand.

A Greek can spend three hours explaining everything wrong with Greece.

The government is useless.

Nothing works.

The roads are terrible.

The bureaucracy is impossible.

The country is finished.

Then a foreigner nods.

“Yes. Greece really is a mess.”

Silence.

Heads turn.

Easy there, Socrates!

We can complain about Greece.

You’re still on probation.

And maybe that’s the real point.

You criticize the family because it’s your family.

You criticize the town because it’s your town.

And you criticize Greece because, despite everything you have just said…

it’s your Greece.

So why do Greeks complain so much?

The financial crisis?

The euro?

Politics?

Bureaucracy?

All excellent contributors.

But I think it runs deeper.

Greeks argue.

We challenge.

We participate.

And we share our opinions.

Because:

Όλα καλά (ola kala)
Everything is fine

ends the conversation.

But:

Δεν θα πιστέψεις τι μου συνέβη σήμερα (den tha pistepseis ti mou synevi simera)
You won’t believe what happened to me today

That’s an invitation.

Sit down.

Have a coffee.

Tell us everything.

And with that, our halftime entertainment comes to an end.

No fireworks.

No wardrobe changes.

No celebrity cameos.

Just coffee, complaints, and several thousand years of practice.

The players are coming back onto the field.

ELTA is still leading.

USPS has had time to think.

Christmas Day of the Summer

One supermarket question, 9,792 churches, a thousand chapels, 920 Peloponnese celebrations—and the day Greece moves somewhere else.

Thursday night, August 13, I turned to Karen.

“Anything else we want to add to OurGroceries?”

OurGroceries is an app we use that keeps reminding us what we need before Sunday morning arrives and one of us opens the refrigerator.

“Honey, we’re out of milk.”

As an organized Greek, I don’t have just one shopping list.

I have Supermarket.

Farmer’s Market.

TETAS — our nut gal.

Spinos — our coffee roaster.

Farmakeio.

And more.

At this point, grocery shopping has become less of a household chore and more of a supply-chain operation.

There is a reason for this.

In Greece, you learn fairly quickly that Sunday morning is not the ideal time to discover that you are out of milk.

Do you like your coffee black?

Supermarkets are generally closed on Sundays.

There are exceptions, of course, particularly in tourist areas and parts of Athens.

But here in Kalamata, Sunday shopping usually involves finding a mini market or a bloated periptero, improvising, or simply accepting that you should have planned better.

Which is why, on Thursday night, I was reviewing the lists.

“We should make sure we have everything,” I told Karen. “Everything will be closed Saturday.”

“Why?”

“Because Saturday is August 15th.”

She looked at me.

“We can go Saturday.”

“No, we can’t. Everything will be closed.”

Karen picked up her phone.

This is rarely a positive development when we disagree about something.

A few seconds later:

“AB is open.”

“What?”

She turned the phone toward me.

Google showed our AB Vassilopoulos on Kritis Street open Saturday.

Regular hours.

I stared at it.

“That can’t be right.”

“There it is.”

“But Saturday is August 15th.”

“You are such a drama queen.”

I have been married long enough to recognize when it is time to use the escape hatch.

“Okay. Maybe. But I’d rather go tomorrow. Saturday will probably be busy.”

Notice what had just happened.

I had gone from:

Everything in Greece will be closed.

to:

I am merely concerned about traffic patterns.

Seamlessly.

The next day I stopped at The Mart.

At the checkout, I asked the cashier whether they would be open Saturday.

She looked at me as though I had asked whether they planned to remain open Christmas morning.

“No.”

“Everything is closed?”

“Of course.”

Then she explained it to me in one sentence.

“The fifteenth is the Christmas Day of the summer.”

Ah.

There it was.

Not:

It’s a public holiday.

Not:

The supermarket will be closed.

Christmas Day.

Of the summer.

Suddenly my milk emergency seemed considerably less important.

I knew August 15 was important.

I’m Greek.

I grew up here.

I knew about the Dormition of the Virgin Mary — the Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου — one of the great feast days of the Orthodox Church.

I knew people went to church.

I knew villages held πανηγύρια.

I knew Greeks named Maria, Panagiotis, Panagiota, Despina and others connected to the Virgin Mary had a very busy telephone day ahead of them.

What I had apparently forgotten was the scale of the thing.

So I went home and did what I always do when I realize I don’t understand something about the country where I was born.

I started Googling Greece.

This is usually a mistake.

The first number I found was:

9,792.

Nine thousand.

Seven hundred.

Ninety-two.

That is the figure given for parish and monastery churches in Greece.

For a country of roughly ten million people.

And apparently 9,792 doesn’t count all the little ones.

Then I checked Tinos.

This is the island where thousands of Orthodox faithful gather every August 15 at the Church of Panagia Evangelistria to honor the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.

Tinos alone has more than 1,000 chapels.

One island.

More than a thousand chapels.

Population: 8,934.

That works out to roughly:

one chapel for every nine residents.

At that point I stopped trying to count churches.

Naturally, I moved on to πανηγύρια.

Panigyria.

This did not improve matters.

Because August 15 isn’t celebrated the same way everywhere.

Every island and village seems to have looked at one of the biggest religious holidays in Greece and said:

Yes, but what can we add?

On Amorgos, people arrive at the celebration at Panagia Panochoriani on donkeys.

Afterward there is food and rakomelo.

That seems fair.

If I have traveled to church by donkey, I feel I have earned the rakomelo.

On Serifos, the Xylopanagia celebration lasts three days.

Tradition says that the couple who opens the first dance around the large olive tree beside the church will be married within the year.

I am assuming unmarried couples are advised to consider their seating arrangements carefully.

On Nisyros, the celebration of Panagia Spiliani lasts:

nine days.

Nine.

Days.

Apparently at some point somebody on Nisyros heard the phrase “long weekend” and regarded it as a lack of ambition.

On Lesvos, pilgrims traditionally walk about 25 kilometers from Mytilene to Agiassos for the celebration of Panagia Agiasotissa.

Twenty-five kilometers.

On foot.

I assume whoever suggested this was not carrying the cooler.

Then we get to Kefalonia.

Every year around August 15, small snakes appear at the church of Panagia Lagouvarda in Markopoulo.

Of course they do.

Because apparently somewhere between:

They are known as the snakes of the Virgin Mary.

They are described as harmless.

People come specifically to see them.

This is where Greece and I temporarily part company.

I trust everyone’s word.

I am not a “snake person.”

I feel no compelling need to verify this at close range.

Because apparently somewhere between:

Then there is Ikaria.

An island already famous for people living a very long time.

Its mid-August panigyria involve dancing, goat meat and strong local red wine.

Perhaps we have finally discovered the longevity program.

By now I thought I had probably learned enough about πανηγύρια.

I had churches.

I had chapels.

I had donkeys.

I had nine-day celebrations.

I had a 25-kilometer pilgrimage.

I had marriage predictions involving an olive tree.

I had goat and strong red wine.

I had snakes.

Surely that was enough.

Then I discovered:

e-panigiria.gr.

Of course I did.

Because apparently Greece has so many πανηγύρια that somebody decided the country needed a website to keep track of them.

You can search by region.

You can search by date.

There is a calendar.

There is a map.

And because a website devoted entirely to telling you where Greek πανηγύρια are taking place was apparently insufficient—

there is an app.

A real one.

E-panigiria.

At this point I began to suspect that I had seriously underestimated the organizational requirements of Greek summer.

So I started scrolling.

And scrolling.

And scrolling.

When I checked the regional archive, it had:

6,017 listings.

Now, to be fair, these are not all strictly religious panigyria.

There are πανηγύρια.

There are γλέντια.

There are ανταμώματα.

There are village gatherings.

There are traditional celebrations.

There are grape festivals.

There are sardine festivals.

There are potato festivals.

There are, apparently, thousands of reasons for Greeks to set up tables, find some musicians and remain awake considerably later than I do.

Then I made the mistake of clicking:

Peloponnese.

Twenty-three pages.

Forty listings per page.

Even the last page was full.

I did the math.

920.

Nine hundred and twenty panigyria, glentia, village feasts and assorted celebrations.

In the Peloponnese alone.

At that point, 9,792 churches started to seem restrained.

And somewhere between the thousand chapels on Tinos, the pilgrims walking across Lesvos, the snakes on Kefalonia and an app capable of directing me toward 920 celebrations in my own part of Greece, I finally began to understand what the cashier meant.

August 15th is not merely a religious holiday.

And it is not merely a day when the supermarket is closed.

It is one of those days when normal Greece seems to pause.

Except Greece doesn’t really pause.

It relocates.

From the supermarket to the village square.

From Athens back to the island.

From work to the family table.

From the city to the church courtyard.

Greece doesn’t close on August 15th.

It moves somewhere else.

Which brings us back to AB.

Google said they would be open.

The cashier at The Mart said the very idea was ridiculous.

Karen said I was a drama queen.

Whether AB is actually open this morning, I have absolutely no intention of driving to Kritis Street to find out.

There are some disagreements a married man should not investigate too aggressively once he has successfully escaped from them.

Besides.

We have milk.

The whistle blew.

ELTA had possession.

And frankly, I wasn’t optimistic about the Greek side.

This was ELTA, after all.

We Greeks have opinions about ELTA.

Many opinions.

But then something unexpected happened.

ELTA came out attacking.

On July 21, our envelope left Kalamata.

Later that day, it reached Eleftherios Venizelos Airport.

Kalamata to Athens: 268 km / 166 miles.

One day.

Not bad, ELTA.

On July 24, it left Athens.

That same day, it arrived at JFK in New York.

Athens to New York: roughly 7,930 km / 4,930 miles.

Across Greece.

Across Europe.

Across the Atlantic.

Done.

Then, on July 25 at 9:52 AM, came the handoff.

ELTA had carried the ball all the way from Kalamata to New York.

Now its American partner took possession:

USPS.

Same envelope.

Same tracking number.

A clean handoff.

All USPS had to do was finish the play.

Destination?

Pennsylvania.

Approximately 220 km / 137 miles away.

And then…

nothing.

For the moment, our little piece of snail mail stopped moving.

Not even at snail speed.

Let’s check the first-half statistics.

ELTA: almost 8,000 km in four days.

USPS: 220 km remaining and apparently considering its options.

So let me understand this correctly.

ELTA took an envelope from Kalamata to Athens, put it on an airplane, sent it across the Atlantic, and handed it safely to its American delivery partner in New York.

USPS received it…

looked toward Pennsylvania…

and apparently said:

“Looks good there.”

I never thought I would write the next sentence.

But the referee has blown the halftime whistle.

ELTA 1 — USPS 0

And we Greeks complain about ELTA.

Perhaps we owe them an apology.

A small one.

Very small.

Let’s not get carried away.

The players are heading into the locker room.

Which means it’s time for the halftime show.

No Taylor Swift.

No Doritos commercials.

No multimillion-dollar pyrotechnics.

We have something much more entertaining.

What do Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, JFK, the Social Security Administration, YouTube, Dr. Ed Weir, PhD, former Social Security manager, and a room full of Greeks complaining have in common?

One envelope.

More specifically, one envelope containing Form SSA-7162—the United States government’s polite way of asking Americans living abroad:

Are you still alive?

And, if so, could you please prove it on paper?

As expats receiving Social Security, Karen and I have learned—the hard way—that every year or two, depending on some mysterious governmental rotation, we must complete this questionnaire and send it back.

Name.

Address.

Signature.

Yes, we are alive and well.

Please continue paying us.

Easy-peasy.

Not so fast.

Can we submit it electronically?

No.

Can we deliver it to the Federal Benefits Unit at the American Embassy in Athens?

Still no.

Can we mail it to the Federal Benefits Unit in Athens?

Also no.

The form must travel all the way back to the Social Security Administration in Pennsylvania.

By mail.

From Greece.

Now, ELTA is perfectly capable of delivering an envelope to the United States.

The only uncertainty is whether it will arrive this year, next year, or after the recipient has moved into assisted living.

We once mailed a postcard from Kalamata in March for a friend’s birthday in Bozeman, Montana, in April.

It arrived in time for Christmas.

So naturally, we considered using a courier.

Problem solved.

Except the return address supplied by Social Security was a post-office box, and courier companies do not deliver to post-office boxes.

Fortunately, before artificial intelligence, there was:

Athanassiadis Intelligence.

A.I.

Some online detective work uncovered a physical street address for the Social Security office in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

Hidden in plain sight.

Now we were getting somewhere.

I researched courier companies and discovered that ELTA Courier appeared to offer two international services: Express Mail Service—EMS—and Special Priority Mail—SPM.

Even better, the ELTA Courier website specifically said that shipments to the United States were restricted to documents.

Perfect.

We had documents.

The temperatures had finally moderated, so Karen and I walked down to the ELTA Courier office on Filellinon Street, wishing:

to our neighbors along the way.

The lovely woman behind the counter looked at the envelope.

Then she looked at me.

“Yes, we used to send things to the United States.”

Used to?

“But not anymore.”

“But your website says you accept documents.”

“No. We cannot send it.”

“Not even documents?”

“No.”

Perhaps the website and the office were no longer speaking to each other.

“Maybe ask at ELTA,” she suggested.

Oh boy.

Fortunately, the regular ELTA post office was on our way home.

Unfortunately, this was Greece, which meant I first had to take a number.

Yes, I am still in Greece.

I did not accidentally relocate while walking down Filellinon Street.

I took my ticket.

And waited.

And waited.

Around me, a roomful of Greeks had already begun providing unsolicited commentary on the wait, the staffing, the government, and probably several subjects I couldn’t hear from my chair.

Remember them.

They get the halftime show.

The take-a-number system also reminded me of the first time I encountered one during my first visit to the United States in 1980.

Living in America—The Finale

Ding.

Number 61.

“It’s me! It’s me!” I announced, as though I had just won the lottery instead of earning the right to approach a postal counter.

I explained what I needed.

“EMS? SPM?”

The clerk stared at me.

Apparently, EMS and SPM were Greek to a Greek.

“Do you need a signature when it arrives?”

“Yes!”

“I can mark it as priority and add international tracking, but it will travel as regular mail.”

Expedited regular mail.

A uniquely Mediterranean category.

There was one reassuring detail.

ELTA would begin the journey in Kalamata and carry our envelope out of Greece. Once it reached the United States, USPS would become ELTA’s American partner and make the final delivery to Pennsylvania.

Same envelope.

Same tracking number.

A clean handoff.

Greece would take the opening leg.

America would bring it home.

What could possibly go wrong?

The Social Security Administration had mailed the form on July 2.

We received it in Kalamata on July 20.

Eighteen days of our sixty-day response period had already been enjoyed by the postal system.

We completed the form and, the next morning, took it to ELTA.

Would it reach Pennsylvania before Social Security’s clock expired—or before someone concluded that Karen and I had already reached our final resting place?

Who knew?

Perhaps it would race across the Atlantic.

Perhaps it would stop somewhere for coffee.

Perhaps it would join our Bozeman postcard and arrive around Christmas.

The clerk handed me the receipt.

After considerable detective work, I found the tracking number.

It had been printed in a typeface apparently selected by the Kalamata Association of Ophthalmologists.

Take a close look at the original receipt.

See whether you can find it.

Should you still fail, I know a friendly ophthalmologist in Kalamata.

On the morning of July 21, our envelope officially entered the ELTA system.

Status: Accepted in Kalamata.

Destination: Social Security Administration, Pennsylvania.

Mission: Prove that Karen and Nick were still alive.

The players were now on the field.

Kalamata had possession.

Eleftherios Venizelos Airport was waiting upfield.

JFK was farther ahead.

And somewhere beyond that, Pennsylvania was the goal.

But just before kickoff, there was one more complication.

A video posted in August 2025 by Dr. Ed Weir, PhD, a former Social Security manager, suggested that our envelope might never have needed to leave Kalamata at all.

No courier.

No stamp.

No ELTA.

No waiting for the Second Coming.

Could that possibly be true?

We would find out.

But first, the referee checked his watch.

The players took their positions.

There are many dangerous conversations in Greece.

Politics.

Football.

Whether Athens or Thessaloniki has better food.

And then there is the most dangerous one of all.

How do you pronounce “gyro”?

This is where innocent tourists enter a Greek restaurant full of confidence and leave with emotional damage.

“Can I have a jai-ro?”

Silence.

“Yee-ro?”

Slight nod.

“Guy-ro?”

The waiter looks at the floor, questions the future of civilization, and writes down one pork gyro with tzatziki.

In America, I heard everything.

Gyro.

Jai-ro.

Guy-ro.

Hero.

Year-oh.

One man in Florida once called it a “Greek taco,” and honestly, I still have not fully recovered.

The funny thing is, the word is not mysterious at all.

Γύρος (gyros) means something that turns.

That’s it.

The meat turns.

The cook shaves it.

You eat it too fast.

Then you say, “I probably should not have ordered the second one.”

This is the full Greek life cycle.

But pronouncing it is only the first test.

Then you have to order.

People think ordering coffee at Starbucks is complicated.

Please.

At Starbucks, you choose size, milk, temperature, foam, syrup, emotional support, and whether your name will be spelled correctly.

At a Greek souvlaki place, you enter a philosophical labyrinth.

Do you want gyro?

Kalamaki?

Pork?

Chicken?

Kebab?

Loukaniko?

In pita?

As a sandwich?

As a skepasti, which is basically Greece looking at a pita and saying, “What if we made this more dangerous?”

As a merida, because apparently you are not here for a snack, you are here to rebuild after a war?

With tzatziki?

Without onion?

With fries inside?

Fries on the side?

Double meat?

Mustard sauce?

Yogurt sauce?

House sauce?

A little spicy cheese dip on the side, because your original bad decision was not ambitious enough?

This is not fast food.

This is a constitution.

The menu at our local souvlaki place in Vroniville — okay, technically a Kalamata neighborhood called Vroniville, but in our house it has become Vroniville — is not a menu.

It is a decision tree.

Pork gyro in pita.

Chicken kalamaki in pita.

Kebab in pita.

Village sausage in pita.

Beef burger in pita.

Vegetable burger in pita, for the person trying to behave while standing in front of a vertical mountain of rotating pork.

Then the same things appear again as sandwiches.

Then as skepastes.

Then as portions.

Then grilled.

Then by the kilo, because Greece understands that sometimes dinner is not enough and you need to make a commitment.

At some point, the poor person behind the counter is waiting patiently while I stare at the screen like I am defusing a bomb.

Karen asks, “What are you getting?”

I say, “I don’t know yet. I’m still in the pita section.”

It is not like I never ordered souvlaki in Greece before.

I am Greek.

I have credentials.

But I was gone for thirty years.

And within thirty years, things changed.

Back in the day, there were two basic roads to happiness.

Souvlaki pita.

Or souvlaki kalamaki.

That was it.

If you ordered pita, the big decision was ap’ ola — από όλα — with everything.

And “everything” did not require a spreadsheet.

Onion.

Tzatziki.

Tomato always.

Done.

No twenty-seven sauces.

No protein journey.

No skepasti negotiations.

No “would you like that as a sandwich, a portion, a kilo, or a small architectural project?”

And fries?

What fries?

This was souvlaki.

Not a Big Mac.

French fries were something other people did in other places, usually near a clown.

Now the fries are inside the pita, outside the pita, next to the pita, under the skepasti, marching across the plate like they own the business.

Apparently, Greece looked at bread, meat, and tzatziki and said:

“Good. But what if we added potatoes?”

Of course we did.

Somewhere, an old souvlaki man is rolling his eyes so hard the gyro stopped turning.

But like most things in Greece, the story is more complicated than the wrapper suggests.

We like to think the gyro was born one sunny afternoon in Athens, probably by a man named Kostas, who looked at a pile of pork, a pita, some tzatziki, and said:

“Children, today we invent civilization.”

Not exactly.

The roots go back to Ottoman doner kebab, to roasted meat, to the old food roads of the Eastern Mediterranean, to refugees, cities, migration, adaptation, and probably at least one argument over garlic.

The doner came first.

Then it travelled.

Then Greece looked at it, adjusted it, renamed it, wrapped it in pita, leaned heavily into pork, and said:

“Now it is ours.”

This, by the way, is also how many things become Greek.

We inherit.

We argue.

We improve.

We rename.

Then we defend it with the intensity of a constitutional crisis.

The old doner was mostly lamb.

The Greek gyro became mostly pork.

That one change did a lot of work.

It separated the Greek version from the Turkish version.

It made it cheaper, more available, more familiar, and eventually more Greek in the everyday sense.

Not ancient Greek.

Not marble column Greek.

Not “Socrates ate this after discussing democracy” Greek.

Modern Greek.

After school Greek.

After beach Greek.

After drinking Greek.

Standing on the sidewalk at midnight Greek.

Students counting coins Greek.

Tourists taking pictures before making a complete mess of themselves Greek.

Greeks abroad missing it with suspicious intensity Greek.

Paper wrapper leaking down your hand Greek.

“Without onion, because I have to speak to another human being later” Greek.

The smell outside a neighborhood shop when you were not hungry five seconds ago, but suddenly you are ready to make life choices Greek.

This is the Greece I understand.

The gyro may not have been invented in the clean, national-museum way people sometimes want.

But food does not usually work like that.

Food travels with people.

It survives wars, borders, poverty, migration, politics, habit, hunger, nostalgia, and late-night bad decisions.

Then one day everyone agrees it belongs to them.

The Greeks did not invent meat on a rotating spit.

But they did invent the Greek gyro.

And that is not a small thing.

Because a Greek gyro is not just meat turning in front of heat.

It is memory wrapped in paper.

It is identity with grease on its hands.

It is the one-euro meal that became three euros, then four, then “are we financing the construction of the Parthenon?”

It is the first thing tourists learn to order and the last thing they learn to pronounce.

And yes, somewhere out there, someone is still saying “tzairos.”

Let them.

They are trying.

Besides, in Greece the important thing is not how you pronounce it.

The important thing is whether you ordered one.

Or two.

Greek coffee ready.

Greek brain successfully rebooted.

NOT!

Nothing has been changed.

Nobody has been combined.

Every name, every cookie, every protest, and every devastating bakery announcement is completely true.

Karen has a favorite bakery in Kalamata.

Obviously.

You cannot live in Greece without developing a fiercely loyal relationship with at least one bakery. It would be like living here without having a favorite kafeneio, a preferred souvlaki place, and one pharmacist who knows more about your medical history than your doctor.

Karen’s bakery belongs to Kaliopi, a neighborhood gem whose display cases are filled with the kind of things that make restraint seem unnecessary and possibly un-Greek.

I love Kaliopi’s bakery too.

Especially the cheese breadsticks.

Buttery. Salty. Dangerous.

I cannot stay away from them.

Her koulourakia?

Very good.

No Smyrneika.

The other gazillion versions of koulourakia. Nahhh.

I tried them all. I wanted to love them. I tried to convince myself that perhaps the next one would awaken something deep inside me.

Nothing.

Then one day, Eirini brought us a box of pastries from another bakery.

Eirini is, of course, a Vroni. There are enough Vronis in our immediate neighborhood to form a small government, and most of them are related to our landlady.

Inside the box were several innocent-looking, flower-shaped pastries filled with some kind of apple mixture.

Deadly.

Not deadly in the unpleasant sense.

Deadly in the Greek-bakery sense, meaning you eat one, announce that you absolutely cannot eat another, and then discover an empty box beside you.

“We had to eat them,” Eirini explained.

Doctor’s orders.

The doctor was her husband, Nikos, of course, who is a radiologist.

I am not entirely certain radiologists are authorized to prescribe apple pastries, but this is Greece. Medical specialties are flexible when filo dough is involved.

The pastries came from a bakery in the center of Kalamata called Alevromata.

Naturally, we went to investigate.

There were more of the apple things.

There were diples.

There were more cheese breadsticks.

There were rows and rows of koulourakia.

And then I saw them.

Σμυρναίικα κουλουράκια.

Smyrneika.

The little boat-shaped cookies traditionally associated with Smyrna.

I bought a few.

I took one bite.

And there she was.

My yiayia.

The taste. The aroma. The texture.

My grandmother was from Smyrni, and these koulourakia somehow carried me directly back to her kitchen. One bite, and decades disappeared.

I was no longer standing in a bakery in Kalamata.

I was a child again.

This is what food does to Greeks. It is never simply food. It is memory, family, geography, history, and emotional instability served on a small plate.

From that day forward, I always found a reason to pass through the center of town.

“We need something from the pharmacy.”

“I should check the Plateia.”

“I think we need to get some walking in. My Apple Watch has already reprimanded me twice this morning.”

“I sense a possible shortage of Smyrneika.”

And somehow, every innocent errand ended with another little box from Alevromata.

Then came the disaster.

I walked into the bakery one day and asked for my usual Smyrneika.

Dionysia, my good friend and the wife of the owner, looked at me.

Not a normal look.

A solemn look.

The kind of look people use when they have terrible news but are searching for a gentle way to deliver it.

“Nikos isn’t going to make them anymore.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“They are too much work. He decided to stop.”

Nikos.

Of course his name was Nikos.

A man named Nikos had personally destroyed my connection to Smyrna.

Apparently, shaping the dough into all those little boats required too much time. There would be no more batches. No more little boxes. No more excuses to walk through the center of Kalamata.

The Smyrneika had been discontinued.

I walked out of the bakery completely disoriented.

Karen was waiting in the car.

I opened the door and sat down.

“What happened?” she asked.

I mumbled something.

“What happened?”

I stared straight ahead.

“Nick, what happened?”

I must have looked as though I had seen a ghost. Or received devastating medical news. Or discovered that Greece had outlawed feta.

“They will stop making the Smyrneika. They did not have any”

Karen paused.

I could tell she was trying very hard to determine the appropriate level of sympathy.

“They what?”

“Nikos says they are too much work.”

“Oh.”

Oh?

Oh?

A vital part of my cultural heritage had just been erased from a Kalamata bakery, and my own wife—my partner of more than twenty-five years—responded with oh.

Naturally, I protested.

I gathered support.

I marched down the main Plateia of Kalamata.

At least that is how the demonstration appeared in my head.

There were banners.

There were speeches.

There may have been international observers.

ΚΑΤΩ ΤΑ ΧΕΡΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΑ ΣΜΥΡΝΑΪΚΑ ΚΟΥΛΟΥΡΑΚΙΑ!

Hands off the Smyrneika koulourakia!

In reality, I used a megaphone and made fun of myself outside Alevromata and then outside Karen’s bakery.

This is what happens when a retired man has too much time, access to social media, and strong feelings about baked goods.

A few days later, I ran into Vasiliki, another friend who works at Alevromata.

I asked her to confirm the rumors.

She lowered her voice.

It was true.

The Smyrneika were finished.

Three days later, I returned to the bakery.

There it was.

The tray.

My tray.

Empty.

Completely empty.

Dionysia stood behind the counter, slowly shaking her head.

No words were exchanged.

None were necessary.

We both crossed ourselves in honor of the departed Smyrneika.

Αιωνία τους η μνήμη.

May their memory be eternal.

But what does a Greek do when deprived of his favorite dessert?

Does he accept the situation calmly?

Does he move on?

Does he choose another koulouraki from the forty-seven available varieties?

Absolutely not.

He becomes determined.

Fine, I thought.

I will make them myself.

I found a recipe. I assembled the ingredients. I entered the kitchen with the confidence of a man who has watched other people bake throughout his entire life.

Among the ingredients as an after thought besides vanilla one recipe mentioned real mastiha.

Not mastiha flavoring.

Not powder.

The actual little pieces of mastiha. Ahhhh I could already smell my yiayia kitchen.

I used them incorrectly.

I will not go into the details because future culinary historians may be studying this event, and I do not wish to influence their findings.

The important thing is that my Smyrneika did not come out exactly like the ones from Alevromata.

They tasted different.

They smelled different.

They were not exactly the koulourakia of my yiayia.

I had failed.

Then Karen tried one.

Her eyes widened.

“These are my favorite koulourakia.”

My disaster had become a breakthrough.

By misusing the mastiha, I had accidentally created a new variety specifically engineered for Karen.

I had begun the day trying to resurrect my grandmother’s Smyrneika and ended it inventing my wife’s favorite cookie.

This is Greece.

Even pastry grief comes with a plot twist.

Perhaps I should give up writing silly stories and become a baker.

I already have the name:

“Εδώ τα Καλά Σμυρναίικα!”

“Edo Ta Kala Smyrneika!”

Here are the good Smyrneika!

One retired writer.

One devastated customer.

One misused piece of mastiha.

And, judging from the old banknote beneath the plate, our first day’s earnings are already on the table.

Breaking news.

A visitor has filed a lawsuit against the Greek Tourism Bureau for false advertising and deceptive practices.

The charges are serious.

The plaintiff claims Greece was presented as sun, sea, romance, village charm, blue doors, white churches, grilled fish, friendly locals, and slow living.

Nowhere, the complaint argues, was there adequate warning about bureaucracy, damp apartments, rogue scooters, village dogs, church bells, jackhammers, disappearing plumbers, elastic definitions of tomorrow, or neighbors who know where you went before you return.

After hearing all evidence, the court has reached its decision.

The court finds Greece not guilty of any wrongdoing.

However, the court strongly recommends a warning label.

Warning: Greece may cause romance, confusion, paperwork, emotional attachment, unexpected neighbors, flexible timelines, and long-term dependency. Consult your spouse before moving and your doctor if you have high blood pressure, control issues, or an unhealthy attachment to schedules.

Every summer, the ksenoi (ξενοι) arrive en masse.

They come with rolling suitcases, linen shirts, sun hats, optimistic sandals, and the facial expression of people who have watched too many videos of turquoise water, cliffside villages, and grilled octopus arriving at sunset.

They land in Athens, Kalamata, Chania, Naxos, Paros, Corfu, Kefalonia, and every village that has ever been described online as “hidden.”

Hidden from whom is never clear.

By day two, they are emotional.

By day three, they are dangerous.

Because day three is when it usually happens.

There has been sun.

There has been swimming.

There has been soft music.

They are sitting by the sea.

The water is sparkling.

The waiter has brought something sweet.

A cat is acting like the property manager.

Someone at the next table is eating fried fish with the seriousness of a religious ceremony.

And the visitor says the words Greece has heard many times before.

“I am in love with this place.”

Of course.

Greece in summer is not playing fair.

The light is too good.

The sea is too persuasive.

The plates keep arriving.

The bill is somehow less painful than expected.

And nobody has yet asked for a notarized document from a country the visitor no longer lives in.

Then the visitor takes it further.

“I want to live here.”

Now the locals smile.

Not cruelly.

Not exactly.

More like people who know the second act.

“Yes,” they say. “It is wonderful here.”

“So peaceful,” someone adds.

“Especially in September,” says another.

“Oh yes,” says a third. “In September, when the schools open and all the ksenoi go home, then Greece is beautiful.”

“And October,” someone adds, lowering his voice as if revealing state secrets. “October is the best month of the year.”

This enters the visitor’s brain like a prophecy.

September.

Peace.

No crowds.

October.

Perfection.

The real Greece.

The local people do not lie.

They simply leave out several exhibits.

The visitor returns home, but is no longer the same person.

The office looks like a holding cell.

The inbox looks like punishment.

The supermarket produce section feels like a personal insult.

Within months, decisions are made.

A house is sold.

Boxes are packed.

Friends are informed.

Someone says, “Are you sure?”

The dreamer says, “I have never been more sure of anything in my life.”

This is almost always a warning sign.

The dreamer moves to Greece.

At first, everything confirms the dream.

The sea is still there.

The village still looks innocent.

The old men still occupy the square like a permanent advisory board.

The bakery still smells like civilization has not completely failed.

Then September arrives.

The schools open.

The ksenoi go home.

And the newcomer waits for the promised peace.

Instead, Greece removes the summer filter.

The first hint is the noise.

There was supposed to be silence.

Instead there are scooters, church bells, mopeds, trucks, children, balconies, chairs scraping tile, dogs conducting neighborhood security, and somewhere, always, one jackhammer.

Always.

Nobody knows where the jackhammer is.

Nobody knows what is being built.

But it is there.

GRRRRRRRRR.

The national percussion section.

The newcomer waits for October.

Maybe October is the peaceful month.

Yes, the newcomer has moved to Greece.

October brings paperwork.

In some countries, paperwork is something you complete.

In Greece, paperwork is something you enter.

There are forms.

There are certificates.

There are photocopies.

There are stamps.

And then come the words.

“Just one more paper.”

The newcomer soon learns that “just one more paper” is never just one more paper.

It is a portal.

It is how you begin the morning trying to solve one simple issue and end the afternoon in another office across town, holding a folder, a number, and the facial expression of a person silently reviewing every decision since 1987.

Then comes November.

The newcomer needs a plumber.

A local man says, “I know someone.”

This sounds promising.

The plumber says he will come tomorrow.

In the old country, tomorrow means tomorrow.

In Greece, avrio (αύριο) has range.

Avrio (αύριο) can mean tomorrow.

It can mean soon.

It can mean later.

It can mean, “Why are you attacking me with the calendar?”

The plumber does not come tomorrow.

Or the next tomorrow.

Or the tomorrow after that.

That is when it starts to sink in.

Greek time is not linear.

It has curves.

Then December arrives.

The newcomer still believes.

Winter in Greece will be charming.

Then February enters the courtroom.

February is when Greece stops flirting.

The beach is still there, but now it looks less like paradise and more like a beautiful place to lose feeling in your legs.

The sea is still blue, but in a cold, suspicious way.

The marble floors in the apartment feel designed by someone who hated bare feet.

The house is damp.

The wind has developed a personality.

Reality hits.

Everybody loves Greece in July.

July is not the exam.

February is the exam.

February is Greece saying, “You said you loved me. Prove it.”

By March, notes are taken.

By March, notes are taken.

By April, the case is prepared.

By May 1st, the lawsuit is filed.

Terrible timing.

The flowers are blooming, the trees are waking up, the light is softening, and Greece is already preparing Exhibit A for the defense:

Summer.

The People v. Greek Summer.

Court is now in session.

The Honorable Judge Papadimitropoulos is presiding.

“Objection, Your Honor,” says the plaintiff. “Greece presented itself as peaceful.”

The defense rises.

“Postcards do not have sound.”

Sustained.

“Objection, Your Honor,” says the plaintiff. “The locals promised September would be calm.”

The defense nods.

“It is calmer. The tourists left.”

The plaintiff gestures wildly.

“But the dogs stayed.”

Sustained.

“Objection, Your Honor. The plumber said tomorrow.”

The courtroom falls silent.

The judge removes his glasses.

“Did the plumber say tomorrow?”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“Or did the plumber say avrio (αύριο)?”

The plaintiff pauses.

“Avrio”

The judge sighs.

“Overruled.”

Next witness: privacy.

The plaintiff claims Greece was presented as welcoming.

This is true.

But nobody explained the Greek definition of welcoming.

In Greece, if you live in a neighborhood, village, building, or street for more than twelve minutes, your file begins.

Not with paperwork.

With witnesses.

The bakery knows your bread.

The pharmacy knows your limp.

The kiosk knows your newspaper.

The neighbor knows your visitors.

The balcony across the street knows when you took out the trash and whether the bag looked heavy.

Nobody is spying.

Do not be dramatic.

They are simply maintaining community records without software.

The plaintiff complains that everyone knows their business.

The defense responds that when help was needed, the same network knew a cousin, who knew a man, who knew another man, who might be able to fix it.

Next witness: driving.

The plaintiff states that the roads in the brochures looked charming.

The court agrees.

They are charming.

They are also used by people who treat lanes as light suggestions rather than moral obligations.

Someone passes on a curve while God quietly opens a file.

The plaintiff says this is stressful.

The defense says this is transportation.

The court recommends prayer.

Next witness: the dream house.

The plaintiff presents Exhibit A.

An online listing.

Old stone house.

Village setting.

Needs renovation.

The judge winces.

The courtroom murmurs.

Everyone understands.

“Needs renovation” can mean charming updates.

It can also mean the roof has opinions, the plumbing has trauma, the electrician has vanished, the permits require an engineer, the boundary line was last discussed in 1974, and a neighbor remembers something about your wall that nobody wrote down because why make life easy?

A man named Vangelis came to look at it.

He promised an estimate.

Tomorrow.

Objection, Your Honor.

The witness has already abused tomorrow.

Sustained.

He promised it avrio.

Much better.

Finally, the court considers emotional damages.

The plaintiff argues that the move meant leaving behind children, friends, old routines, familiar holidays, a trusted doctor, a familiar dentist, and a supermarket where the cereal aisle obeyed international law.

This part is not funny.

Not entirely.

Because if you move to Greece from far away, you are not only moving toward something.

You are moving away from something too.

Greece may give you a new life.

But it does not erase the cost of leaving the old one.

That part comes with you.

Even in the sun.

Especially in the sun.

So the court returns to the original question.

Did Greece falsely advertise itself?

The plaintiff says yes.

The defense says no.

Greece did not lie.

Greece simply showed its best side first.

As people do.

As countries do.

As anyone does before the second date.

Visiting Greece is romance.

Moving to Greece is marriage.

And marriage includes both sunsets and utility bills.

The real Greece begins after the vacation ends.

It begins when you stop saying “Greece” like a dream and start saying the name of your street, your problem, your errand, your shortcut, your favorite table, your useful cousin-by-association, your life.

That is when Greece stops being scenery.

It becomes specific.

And specific is where love either gets real or quietly packs a suitcase.

So yes.

Fall in love with Greece.

Please do.

Swim in the water.

Eat the fish.

Drink under the bougainvillea.

Look at the village on the hill and imagine another life.

Dreaming is allowed.

But before you announce that you are moving here forever because you had one perfect afternoon on an island, ask yourself the honest question.

Can I love Greece when it stops performing Greece for me?

Can I love it when the ksenoi go home, the schools open, the office is closed, the plumber is late, the road is blocked, the dog is barking, the wind is howling, the paperwork is multiplying, and someone is operating a jackhammer at 7:41 in the morning because apparently democracy depends on it?

If the answer is no, enjoy the vacation.

No shame.

Order another drink.

If the answer is yes?

Welcome.

Bring patience.

Bring humor.

Bring copies of everything.

You hear it everywhere.

At daybreak.

At lunchtime.

At the exact moment the sun is saying goodnight and you are thinking, foolishly, that perhaps the day is over.

No.

GRRRRRRRRRR.

The national instrument has begun.

If you had just landed in Greece from outer space, you might think you were hearing an orchestra warming up.

A strange orchestra, yes.

An orchestra made entirely of angry metal birds attacking the sidewalk.

But still. An orchestra.

And you, being an alien, would not know any better.

You would turn to your alien wife and say, “How beautiful. Is this traditional music?”

And your alien wife would say, “I think they are removing a balcony.”

Because in Greece, the jackhammer is not just a tool.

It is a way of life.

It is the sound of progress, repair, regret, renovation, correction, and somebody realizing the pipe was actually on the other side.

Why is the jackhammer the go-to tool in Greece?

Because everything in Greece is made of cement.

Not some things.

Everything.

Streets? Cement.

Buildings? Cement.

Balconies? Cement.

Stairs? Cement.

Walls? Cement.

Dreams? Probably reinforced cement with rebar.

Greece has enough cement to build a solid foundation under the entire United States of America, with enough left over for a small island, three apartment buildings, and a suspicious little wall around someone’s cousin’s olive grove.

A couple of months ago, they started digging up a corner lot near us.

Let’s be careful with the word “lot.”

In America, a lot means half of Athens.

In Kalamata, a lot means a box.

Maybe ten by ten.

Maybe large enough for one building, two balconies, and three families arguing about parking forever.

They dug down twenty or thirty feet.

Then they built the foundation.

Then they closed it up and poured more cement on top.

Karen looked at it and said, “They’re building a bunker.”

She was not wrong.

Under the ground floor will be the basement.

Το υπόγειο (ipogio).

Maybe for parking.

Maybe for storage.

Maybe for the one tiny car that can enter only if everyone inside holds their breath and folds in the mirrors.

Above that, they will build three or four more floors.

All cement.

Then more cement.

Then bricks.

Then more cement.

Then tile.

Then someone will come back two weeks later and break part of it again because a pipe, wire, drain, cable, mystery tube, or cousin named Vangelis needs access.

This is where the jackhammer returns.

GRRRRRRRRRR.

In America, interior walls are often metal framing and drywall.

Γυψοσανίδες (gipsosanides).

Fast. Light. Flexible. Easy to change.

In Greece?

Oh no no no.

That is not a wall.

That is a suggestion.

That is a theater set.

That is something you put in a building if you want your neighbors to think you have financial problems.

One day I was looking at a new apartment and talking to the head of construction.

I asked him, very innocently, “What about using γυψοσανίδες for the interior walls? Less expensive. Faster. Lighter. Easier if someone wants to change the space later.”

He looked at me with pity.

The way Greeks look at you when you have said something technically reasonable but culturally insane.

“No, no, no,” he said. “If I don’t use bricks, I won’t sell the apartments.”

Τούβλα (touvla).

Bricks.

Solid.

Heavy.

Serious.

Greek.

The customer wants to knock on the wall and hear destiny.

Not hollow.

Not flexible.

Not modern.

Destiny.

Never mind that Los Angeles skyscrapers survive earthquakes with steel, glass, and drywall.

What do the Californians know?

They don’t even put oregano on fries.

In Greece, a proper building must feel like it could survive an Ottoman siege, a German occupation, three inheritance disputes, two earthquakes, and an uncle with opinions.

So we build with cement.

We repair with cement.

We patch cement with more cement.

Then we dig it up.

Then we inspect it.

Then we close it again.

Then someone remembers something.

Then we open it again.

As I wrote before, Greece has a national construction method called:

Ράβε ξήλωνε.

Build it.

Rip it apart.

Do it again.

This applies to streets, walls, sidewalks, permits, family arguments, and possibly democracy.

And for this sacred cycle, one tool rises above all others.

Not the hammer.

Not the drill.

Not the shovel.

The jackhammer.

The king of tools.

The alarm clock of summer.

The soundtrack of renovation.

The voice of Greek civilization saying:

“We are almost finished.”

Which means, of course:

“We have just begun.”

GRRRRRRRRRR.

For twenty-five years, Karen thought I had a problem.

Not a serious problem.

Not the kind where someone quietly prints an article and leaves it on your desk.

Just a normal marital problem.

The kind where your wife says, “You remember Susan, right?” and you stare back with the calm, empty expression of a goat watching a ferry leave.

“Susan,” Karen would say.

I would nod.

“Susan from work.”

More nodding.

“My close friend Susan.”

Still nodding.

“The Susan I have told you about thirty-seven times.”

This is where I usually made my mistake.

“Of course,” I would say.

This was a lie.

I did not know Susan.

I had no idea who Susan was.

Susan could have been a colleague, a neighbor, a dental hygienist, a Supreme Court justice, or someone we once met near a cheese platter in 2009.

Nothing stuck.

Karen found this alarming.

Also irritating.

Also, over time, possibly evidence that I had not been listening for most of our marriage.

Which, to be fair, is not entirely false.

But that was not the whole story.

Because then we moved to Greece.

And suddenly I know everybody.

The butcher.

The baker.

The woman at the pharmacy.

The man at the market who has the good peaches.

The mailman.

The neighbor with the dog.

The other neighbor with the louder dog.

The woman at the bakery who no longer asks what I want because apparently my koulourakia habits are now part of the municipal archive.

Karen has watched this transformation with increasing suspicion.

For twenty-five years, she was married to a man who stood at the edge of the room.

Quiet.

Contained.

Careful.

Restrained.

In America, Karen was the one in the middle of the room.

Karen made the introductions.

Karen worked the room.

Karen remembered names.

I stood nearby holding a drink, trying to remember if the man in front of me was Bill, Bob, or somebody Karen had already explained to me seven times in the car.

And I resented the whole shenanigan.

Not the people.

The format.

The polite introductions.

The expectation that “Bill from work” should mean something to my Greek brain.

The floating names.

The invisible American name tags.

Because even when no one was wearing one, the whole room felt like it needed them.

In Greece, nobody needs a name tag.

Give it three minutes and someone will identify you by village, cousin, accent, wife, apartment building, and where to eat the best moussaka.

I also had another habit that did not help my case.

In America, when I introduced my wife, I rarely said, “This is Karen.”

I would say, “This is my wife.”

Or sometimes I would simply gesture in her direction, as if presenting supporting documentation.

Karen noticed.

Of course she noticed.

After years of watching me forget Susan, Linda, Barbara, and possibly three different Bills, she began to suspect I could not remember her name either.

And honestly, who could blame her?

Then we moved to Greece.

And something terrible happened.

I became Karen.

Not completely.

I do not have her hair.

Or her patience.

Or her ability to remember every birthday, appointment, medical detail, family connection, and the full name of every woman who has ever worked with her, even briefly, within a 6,000-mile radius.

But socially?

Something shifted.

In Greece, I am in the middle of the room.

And loud.

Not loud by Greek standards, obviously.

Let’s not exaggerate.

By Greek standards, I am merely participating.

But by the standards of the man Karen lived with in America, I am a public disturbance.

I talk to everyone.

I ask questions.

I wave across streets.

I remember names.

I remember who has a daughter in Thessaloniki, who is renovating the apartment upstairs, who had surgery, who hates the new traffic pattern, and who believes the price of kolokythakia (zucchini) is proof that civilization is collapsing.

My Greek database is updating in real time.

And now, when I introduce my wife, it is always Karen.

“This is Karen.”

“Karen likes this.”

“Karen said that.”

“Karen wants to know.”

“Karen is from New York.”

“Karen is my wife.”

Karen, Karen, Karen.

Suddenly her name is everywhere.

Stamped into every conversation.

Attached to every introduction.

Part of the public record.

Because here, somehow, the name has weight.

Here, she is not floating beside me in a room full of disconnected people.

She is Karen.

My Karen.

Karen from New York.

Karen who moved to Kalamata.

Karen who is watching her quiet American husband become the loud Greek man in the middle of the room.

After twenty-five years of marriage, she is finally getting a glimpse of the original operating system.

And I think a few things have become clear.

I was not antisocial.

I was context-deprived.

I was not bad with names.

I was connecting to the wrong database.

I was not quiet.

I was buffering.

In America, people were introduced to me as isolated facts.

“This is Susan.”

Fine.

But who is Susan?

Where is she from?

Who is her mother?

What does she eat for lunch?

Does she have a cousin in a village in Peloponnese?

Has anyone in her family had a dispute involving land, inheritance, balconies, parking, or olive trees?

Without this information, my Greek brain had nothing to hold on to.

A name alone is not enough.

A name needs scaffolding.

A person is not simply “Susan.”

A person must come with coordinates.

A mother.

A bakery preference.

A medical complaint.

A son studying somewhere.

A husband who may or may not be useful in an emergency.

Then the name sticks.

Dimitris is not Dimitris.

Dimitris is the man from the market whose cousin lives near the old bus station, whose wife makes the good spanakopita, whose brother had a problem with the municipality, and whose nephew may or may not be the guy who fixed the thing that broke the other day.

That I remember.

Susan from work?

Gone.

Vanished.

Lost forever in the American fog.

This is why Greece works for my brain.

America had small talk.

Greece has full-body contact conversation.

In America, you enter a room and behave.

You wait your turn.

You speak at a reasonable volume.

You ask polite questions.

You do not immediately inquire about someone’s lineage, blood pressure, family property, or opinion about the mayor.

In Greece, these are opening remarks.

Here, conversations do not begin politely and proceed in an orderly fashion.

They begin anywhere.

In the elevator.

On the sidewalk.

Across traffic.

From a balcony.

While someone is double-parked with hazard lights on, because apparently hazard lights create a temporary diplomatic zone.

You do not “network” in Greece.

You collide.

You ask one question and suddenly you know three generations, two medical histories, one unresolved property dispute, and somebody’s opinion about your shoes.

This is my natural environment.

Karen says I am a completely different person here.

She is right.

But also, I am not.

I am the same person.

The room changed.

In America, I was at the edge of the room because I did not know where the center was.

In Greece, the center moves constantly.

Sometimes it is the bakery.

Sometimes it is the market.

Sometimes it is the line at the bank, which is not actually a line but a loose philosophical gathering of people who all claim to be next.

Sometimes it is the sidewalk, where three people standing near a parked car can become a town meeting.

Somehow, I know how to enter that.

I know the rhythm.

I know when to interrupt.

I know when to nod.

I know when to say, “Έλα τώρα.”

I know when to pretend I am outraged.

I know when to become genuinely outraged.

I know when a conversation is over, which in Greece means it will continue for another twelve minutes.

Karen watches this with fascination.

And maybe a little concern.

Because the roles have reversed.

In America, she was the mayor.

I was the quiet husband beside her.

The one smiling politely.

The one who would later ask, “Who was that again?”

In Greece, I have apparently opened a campaign office.

I know names.

I know stories.

I know whose cousin did what.

I know who is from where.

I know who not to mention to whom.

Karen is now the one standing slightly to the side while I conduct diplomatic relations over tomatoes.

This is not what she signed up for.

For twenty-five years, she dragged me into conversations.

Now she watches me start them.

For twenty-five years, she explained people to me.

Now I explain people to her.

And I can see the thought crossing her face.

So he was capable of this the whole time?

Yes.

Apparently.

But only in the correct climate.

Like basil.

Or bureaucracy.

Or certain types of mold.

I needed Greece.

I needed volume.

I needed interruption.

I needed context.

I needed people who do not simply say, “Nice to meet you,” and leave it there.

I needed someone to say, “Where are you from?” and mean not only city, but region, family, history, accent, politics, food, trauma, and whether your grandmother made proper gemista.

Then I wake up.

Then the files open.

Then the name attaches itself to a story.

There is one exception.

Expats.

Whenever we meet up with expats, my American behavior returns immediately.

It is almost biological.

We sit down with other people who have moved to Greece, and suddenly I am back at the edge of the room.

Polite.

Quiet.

Measured.

Nodding.

The conversation turns to residency permits, tax forms, shipping containers, Medicare, dentists, accountants, and “how long have you been here,” and my Greek operating system shuts down.

The old American software reboots.

Karen notices.

Of course she notices.

She looks at me as if to say:

There he is.

The man from America.

The one who cannot remember Susan.

And she is not wrong.

Put me with Greeks in Greece, and I become a social butterfly.

Put me with non Greeks in Greece, and suddenly I am standing near the cheese platter again, hoping nobody asks me a follow-up question.

Maybe this is the final proof that identity is not one thing.

We think we know who we are.

Quiet.

Loud.

Social.

Reserved.

Good with names.

Bad with names.

Middle of the room.

Edge of the room.

But sometimes the room matters.

Sometimes the country matters.

Sometimes the language matters.

Sometimes the person you have been for twenty-five years was not the whole person.

Just the version that could survive where you were.

Karen sees me here now.

Louder.

Looser.

More animated.

More familiar with strangers.

More myself in ways I had almost forgotten.

And maybe she understands something she could not fully see in America.

I was always Greek.

Even when I was trying to behave.

Especially then.

Karen looks at me.

I look at Karen.

And somewhere, Susan is still waiting for me to remember why I should know her.

I was chatting online with a friend.

Let’s call her Suzan.

She lives in Switzerland and may be coming to Greece, so I said, “When they stamp your passport, let me know so we can get together.”

Then I stopped.

No stamps.

Not anymore.

Not inside the EU.

Or more accurately, not inside Schengen.

Which is not the same thing as the EU.

Of course it is not.

Why would Europe make this easy?

There is the European Union.

There is Schengen.

There are countries inside the EU and inside Schengen.

There are countries inside the EU but outside Schengen.

There are countries outside the EU but inside Schengen.

There are countries that sound like they should be in both, countries that feel like they are in neither, and countries where you need a lawyer, a map, and a glass of wine before you understand what line you just crossed.

So when I said “no stamps in the EU,” somewhere in Brussels a committee probably fainted.

The correct answer is Schengen.

Inside Schengen, you glide.

Outside Schengen, you may still get the look.

The serious look.

The international look.

The look that says, “Your vacation has now entered paperwork.”

And for some reason, this made me sad.

Oh, the good old days.

Back then, every border crossing felt like an event.

You handed over your passport.

A grumpy man in uniform looked at you.

Then he looked at the passport.

Then he looked back at you, because apparently your face was already under investigation.

Then came the stamp.

Thunk!

Proof.

You had been somewhere.

The passport with many stamps was not just a document.

It was a treasure.

You showed it with pride.

“Look. Italy. Austria. Germany. France. Turkey. London.”

Yes, London was not a country.

But to Greeks of a certain generation, London was basically a separate civilization.

Then came customs.

“Τι έχετε να δηλώσετε;” (ti ehete na dilosete?)

What do you have to declare?

Back in the day, I wanted to be funny.

So I would answer:

“Είμαι πολύ ευτυχισμένος που επιστρέφω στην πατρίδα.” (eimai poli efharistimenos pou epistrefo stin patrida)

I am very happy to return to my homeland.

This was not the answer they wanted.

Customs officers are not famous for rewarding poetry.

They wanted cigarettes.

Whiskey.

Perfume.

Electronics.

Leather goods.

Maybe a suspicious number of sweaters from England.

Not feelings.

But those were the days.

There were borders.

There were stamps.

There were questions.

There was a sense that places were different from each other.

England meant something.

Made in England meant quality.

In Greek slang, we had “μέγκλα.” (megla)

The good stuff.

Proper.

Solid.

Worth bragging about.

Made in Japan, once upon a time, meant something else entirely.

“Τζάμπα.” (tzamba)

Cheap.

Low quality.

Disposable.

Of course, Japan eventually had the last laugh and started making half the world’s best electronics while the rest of us were still trying to fix the antenna on the television.

But the point is not who won.

The point is that things had identity.

Places had identity.

Products had identity.

Travel had identity.

Upper-class Athenian ladies went to London for shopping.

That was a thing.

A pilgrimage with better shoes.

I cannot judge too much.

I was not immune.

I took my own trips to Rome for clothes and shoes.

Because you went to Rome for Italian clothes.

You went to London for English things.

You went to Vienna for schnitzel.

You went to Budapest for goulash.

You went to Napoli for pizza.

You went to Japan for sushi.

Now?

Everything is everywhere.

The world became flat.

I know Thomas Friedman announced this to the world as if it was good news.

The world is flat!

Well, I object.

I do not come from the Netherlands.

I come from mountainous Greece.

I do not want a flat world.

I want hills.

I want borders.

Not the ugly kind.

Not the kind that keeps people apart or makes life cruel.

I mean the beautiful borders.

The cultural borders.

The invisible line where coffee changes.

Where bread changes.

Where the soup has a new name.

Where the pastry looks familiar but suddenly has walnuts instead of cream.

Where you know you have crossed into another place because the signs look different, the air smells different, and someone is serving you something you cannot pronounce.

Now I can get sushi in Kalamata.

Why???

I do not want sushi in Kalamata.

You want sushi?

Go to Japan.

You want lasagna?

Go to Venice.

You want schnitzel?

Go to Vienna.

You want Greek salad in Budapest?

Please!!!

Stick with the goulash.

I know this makes me sound old.

Fine.

I am old enough to remember when a passport was not just a booklet full of promises and warnings.

It was a travel diary written by governments.

Each stamp said:

You were here.

You crossed.

You arrived.

You returned.

You collected a little proof that the world was not one smooth international airport terminal with the same coffee chain, the same duty-free perfume, the same sad sandwich, and the same rolling suitcase wheels clicking across the same polished floor.

I miss the stamp.

I miss the little ceremony.

I miss the suspicion.

I miss the officer asking what I had to declare.

And I miss being young enough, foolish enough, and Greek enough to answer:

“I am very happy to return to my homeland.”

Which, honestly, was probably the most suspicious thing I could have said.

Anyone wants to join me for Indian food tonight?

In Greece, there is a famous letter you see on the back of cars.

Ν.

Not “N” exactly.

Ν.

Greek capital ni.

It stands for:

νέος οδηγός
(neos odigos)

Translation:

new driver.

Beginner.

Freshly licensed.

Recently released into traffic.

By law, new drivers have to display the Ν on the back of the car for one year after getting their license.

This is the official explanation.

The unofficial explanation is that Greece believes every new driver should begin life on the road with public shame attached to the rear window.

In other countries, beginner drivers are gently introduced to the road.

In Greece, we mark them.

There it is.

Officially, it is supposed to be a white Ν inside a blue square.1

Unofficially?

You may see almost anything, as long as it is visible to other human beings and communicates the essential message:

Danger ahead.

On the back glass.

Crooked.

Faded.

Upside down.

Possibly homemade.

Like a small warning label from the Ministry of Anxiety.

Ν.

Proceed with caution.

This person may stop at a green light, turn left from the right lane, panic near a roundabout, or discover the clutch in real time.

But the Ν is not just a sign.

No, no, no.

This is Greece.

The Ν has personality.

You see it on the right side of the back window.

You see it on the left side.

You see it in the middle, slightly crooked, like it was installed during an earthquake.

You see it upside down.

You see it hanging halfway off, bravely surviving the sun, the dust, the rain, and three car washes that never quite happened.

And then there is my favorite.

The reversed Ν.

This happens when someone sticks it on the inside of the rear window with the letter facing the driver.

From inside the car, it looks perfect.

Beautiful.

Correct.

A proud Greek Ν.

But from outside the car, where every other driver on earth is supposed to see it, it becomes a mirror image.

A backwards warning.

A visual confession.

It says:

I am a new driver.

Also, I may not fully understand glass or the Greek alphabet..

There is something very Greek about this.

The law says display the sign.

It does not say the sign has to be emotionally stable.

In most countries, new drivers are usually between 16 and 18.

Our older son was the exception in the United States. He decided to get his license when he was 19, which by American standards made him practically a transportation philosopher.

Nineteen?

In America, people start wondering what happened.

Was there trauma?

Was there a protest?

Was he making a statement against parking lots?

But in Greece?

In Greece, you see “new” drivers in their 50s.

Their 60s.

Sometimes even their 70s.

A car passes you with the Ν on the back window, and the driver looks like he may have personally witnessed the introduction of the traffic light.

And you wonder.

What happened?

Maybe the family donkey died after a century of service and could not be replaced.

Maybe someone finally got the memo that cars have been invented.

Maybe they spent 67 years gathering every drachmoula, euro, coin, favor, and cousinly promise needed to buy a beaten-up used car with one working mirror and a radio permanently tuned to 1984.

Who knows?

This is Greece.

Every car has a story.

Every driver has a backstory.

And every backstory includes at least one uncle.

The Ν is supposed to make experienced drivers more patient.

That is adorable.

Because Greek drivers are famous for patience.

A Greek driver sees the Ν and thinks:

Ah, a new driver. I must give him space.

For exactly half a second.

Then the light turns green.

Then the horn begins.

Not a little toot.

A full declaration.

A civic announcement.

A musical emergency.

MOVE.

MOVE NOW.

YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE.

THE LIGHT HAS BEEN GREEN FOR 0.7 SECONDS.

This is how new drivers learn in Greece.

Not from instructors.

Not from manuals.

Not from road signs, which may or may not be hidden behind an olive tree.

They learn from the horn.

The horn is the real driving school.

One beep means:

Go.

Two beeps mean:

Go faster.

A long beep means:

I have lost faith in your family.

Several beeps mean:

I am now personally involved in your development as a driver.

And if you are really unlucky, someone will pull next to you, lower the window, and offer verbal coaching.

Not useful coaching.

Greek coaching.

“Πού πας έτσι;”
(Pou pas etsi?)

Translation:

“Where are you going like that?”

Which is not really a question.

It is a full Greek traffic diagnosis.

It means:

I disagree with your driving.

I disagree with your timing.

I disagree with your lane choice.

I may also disagree with the person who taught you.

Back in the day, when I was growing up in Athens, there was another line.

A classic.

A masterpiece.

If someone was driving badly, especially a new driver, people would say:

“Πού το πήρες το δίπλωμα; Στο Μινιόν με δόσεις;”
(Pou to pires to diploma? Sto Minion me doseis?)

Translation:

“Where did you get your license? At Minion, on installment payments?”

For those who did not grow up in Athens, Minion was the great department store of old Athens.

You could buy everything there.

Clothes.

Toys.

Household things.

Christmas magic.

And apparently, according to Greek traffic philosophy, a driver’s license.

With monthly payments.

No interest.

Free gift wrapping.

This was not a real thing, of course.

But it was a perfect Greek insult.

Because a Greek insult is never just an insult.

It needs architecture.

It needs history.

It needs a department store.

It needs an accusation about your competence, your family, your finances, and the decline of civilization.

“Where did you get your license? At Minion, on installment payments?”

I still love that line.

It belongs to a vanished Athens.

The Athens of trolley buses, department-store windows, paper bags, narrow streets, cigarette smoke, and men who could insult your driving while double-parked in front of a kiosk.

Minion itself became part of Athens mythology.

Before malls.

Before everything became branded and air-conditioned and exactly the same everywhere.

Minion was an event.

Then it burned.

And Athens lost more than a store.

It lost a reference point.

But the insult survived.

That is very Greek too.

Buildings disappear.

Expressions remain.

Today, the young driver still has the Ν.

The department-store insult may not be as common as it once was, but the spirit is alive and well.

Because Greece does not just judge how you drive.

Greece judges the entire story of how you became a driver.

The moment you hesitate at an intersection, Greece wants to know:

Who taught you?

Who signed the papers?

Was there a test?

Was there a witness?

Was your instructor awake?

Did your uncle know somebody?

Did you get this license from an actual office, or was there a sale at Minion?

The Ν is supposed to protect the new driver.

Instead, it turns the new driver into a public character.

People see the Ν and immediately create a biography.

First month with the license.

Mother is nervous.

Father is pretending not to be nervous.

Grandmother made the sign of the cross before the car left the house.

Some cousin said, “Don’t worry, everyone learns.”

This was a lie.

Nobody learns.

They just become more confident while doing the same things.

And eventually, the Ν comes off.

That is the beautiful part.

One year passes.

The driver removes the sticker.

The car is clean.

The shame is gone.

The driver is now officially experienced.

Which means what?

In Greece, it means you may now honk at the next person with the Ν.

From noon to noon.

Just another day in my homeland.

It began with a notification from Airbnb.

Upcoming charge.

Rental in Athens.

A place I had set up for a friend.

X amount of dollars.

I looked at the message and thought, wait a minute.

This is Greece.

The apartment is in Athens.

I am in Greece.

The air smells of oregano, diesel, and bureaucracy.

Why am I paying in dollars?

Let’s pay in euros.

This was my first mistake.

I logged into Airbnb, changed the card, and clicked Pay Now.

Nope.

Transaction blocked by your bank.

Please call the number on the back of your card.

Fine, I thought. Before I call, let me at least save the card.

Nope again.

Saving the card was also blocked.

Then came the message.

Please call this number.

So I called.

I explained.

Then I was transferred.

Then I explained again.

Somewhere in a large building, possibly guarded by a man named Kostas and three broken printers, a system had decided I was committing fraud.

“Ah, yes,” the woman said. “There was a security alert for possible fraud.”

“No fraud,” I said. “I am trying to pay Airbnb.”

“Yes,” she said.

Good, I thought.

But no.

Because in banking language, yes does not always mean yes.

Sometimes yes means, “I understand.”

Sometimes yes means, “The computer has spoken.”

And sometimes yes means, “Your life is about to become a small documentary.”

Because of the security alert, and because I had tried to save the card, they had to cancel my card.

“Wait,” I said. “What?”

“I am sorry,” she said. “There is nothing I can do.”

Nothing I can do.

One of the great international phrases.

It means the human has surrendered, the computer has won, and you are now standing outside the castle walls holding a dead debit card.

“You will receive your new card in seven to ten business days.”

Seven to ten business days.

In the meantime, apparently, I was not supposed to eat, buy gas, pay tolls, purchase groceries, or participate in the modern economy.

I could always go to a branch to get cash, she said.

Of course.

A branch.

The sacred temple of “take a number and lose your will to live.”

Maybe, if the stars aligned, if the window was open, if the teller was working, and if there were fewer than a gazillion people waiting for that one teller, I could get some cash.

Enough for coffee.

Maybe two coffees, if I did not get fancy.

Or I could make an appointment.

So I checked.

There were openings.

In three weeks.

Unless I wanted to drive 187 kilometers, take a ferry to an island, and visit a branch where the local teller might have an opening in four days.

This is when Greece reminds you that geography is not only a subject in school.

It is also customer service.

Now, I have written before about the Greek system of knowing someone who knows someone.

In America, this sounds suspicious.

In Greece, it is infrastructure.

You may have electricity, water, internet, and garbage pickup.

But the most important utility is still:

Do you know someone?

As it happened, someone of someone worked at this bank in Kalamata.

Message sent.

Candle lit.

Prayers activated.

In the meantime, I decided to use my backup bank.

Because I am responsible.

Because I am prepared.

Because I believe in backup systems.

Well, not so fast, buttercup, came the thundering voice from Mount Olympus.

The debit card from the backup bank needed verification.

But of course.

No problem.

Except verification was “not available.”

Not available today?

No.

Not available for a few months.

So I called the backup bank.

Another conversation began.

What phone are you using?

What computer?

What browser?

What operating system?

Are you on Wi-Fi?

Are you using the app?

Have you tried the website?

Have you logged out?

Have you logged in?

Have you considered moving to a monastery and paying only in olives?

After twenty-seven minutes, the bank opened a ticket.

A ticket.

This is modern progress.

In the old days, they shrugged.

Now the shrug has a reference number.

It is now three days later.

They are still investigating.

The next morning, the prayers were answered.

The someone of someone called.

Appointment made.

New debit card issued.

New PIN, of course, because life had not offered enough opportunities for mental collapse.

I took a picture of the PIN so I would not screw it up.

Yes, I know.

Somewhere, a security expert just fainted.

But at this point, between the canceled card, the backup card, the ticket, the appointment, and the new PIN, my brain had become overcooked hilopites.

“Can I change the PIN?” I asked.

“Yes,” they said. “Only at an ATM.”

Of course.

Why change the PIN where they hand you the card, when you can stand outside at an ATM behind a football team’s worth of people trying to get petty cash?

That would be too simple.

That would disturb the natural order.

New debit card also meant another small Greek errand.

E-Pass.

The toll pass.

Because if the balance gets low, the toll system needs to replenish it from the card.

And the old card was now dead, buried, and possibly under investigation.

“Hey hon,” I said to Karen, “how about taking a little forty-kilometer drive to Arfara and back so we can visit the Moreas Customer Service office?”

This sentence sounds ridiculous unless you live in Greece.

Then it sounds like Tuesday.

I have been to the Moreas office several times.

They know me.

I know them.

At this point, we are practically extended family.

One too many “frauds” on my debit card, and here I was again, returning to the toll office like a man visiting his ancestral village.

I walked in smiling.

Pleasantries exchanged.

Everything was going beautifully.

I explained the official reason for my visit, beyond simply stopping by to see my extended toll-road family.

Then my friend behind the counter looked at me and said:

“Well, we cannot change the card today.”

I laughed.

I thought she was joking.

Hahaha. Very funny. Greece being Greece.

But she was serious.

Two words that can contain an entire civilization.

“All our systems are down,” she said.

Of course they were.

“There has been a fire at the Nova substation in Tripoli. We have no connectivity.”

A fire.

At the Nova substation.

In Tripoli.

Because why should my debit card problem remain between me, Airbnb, and the bank?

No.

Telecommunications infrastructure in the Peloponnese had now entered the chat.

“We have no idea when service will be restored,” she said. “Headquarters has no idea either. Do not come back tomorrow. Try middle of next week.”

And there it was.

Noon to noon.

One ordinary day in Greece.

Airbnb notification.

Bank fraud alert.

Card canceled.

Branch appointments in the next geological era.

Someone who knows someone.

Backup bank verification unavailable.

Ticket opened.

New card issued.

New PIN photographed like state secrets.

E-Pass errand.

Forty-kilometer drive.

Systems down.

Fire in Tripoli.

Try middle of next week.

At some point, a person has to stop fighting the day.

You cannot defeat Greece.

You can only learn when to surrender gracefully.

So I looked at Karen.

“Hey hon,” I said, “how about some gavros, some vlita, and a bottle of tsipouro at the beach?”

Because this is also Greece.

The same place where paying for an apartment in Athens can cancel your debit card and somehow involve a burned telecom substation in Tripoli.

But also the place where, after all of that, you can sit by the sea with fried little fish, boiled greens, cold tsipouro, and the afternoon light bouncing off the water.

The bank can investigate.

The ticket can remain open.

The toll pass can wait.

The system can be down.

We have gavros.

We have vlita.

We have tsipouro.

And for the moment, that is enough.

Greece has thousands of villages with fewer than 500 people.

Thousands.

My search suggested somewhere between 7,000 and 7,500.

For a country roughly the size of Florida, that number feels insane.

For comparison, Florida does have incorporated places under 500 residents — places like La Crosse, Brooker, Horseshoe Beach, Indian Creek, Bay Lake, and Belleair Shore. But we are talking dozens.

Greece is talking thousands.

That is when the statistic stops being trivia and starts sounding like Greece looked at empty space and said, “We can fit a village there.”

Seven thousand tiny villages.

Seven thousand church bells.

Seven thousand family trees.

Seven thousand old men sitting in plastic chairs, watching you drive by like they have been expecting you since 1971.

It sounds impossible until you drive through Greece for more than twenty minutes and realize the truth.

There is always another village.

I like driving around Greece.

I will see something reddish in the far distance, halfway up a mountain, and my brain immediately says:

Village.

Then I spot another roof on another slope, as if the next mountain decided it was not going to be left out.

Also village.

Then, from the passenger seat, Karen blurts out:

“What the heck is that?”

That is usually a lonely chapel.

Not near a road.

Not near a house.

Not near anything that suggests a normal human being was ever meant to get there.

Just a tiny white chapel sitting on a cliff, looking as if the only practical way to visit is by helicopter, divine intervention, or a goat with excellent balance.

And you say the obvious thing:

“Who looked at that spot and said, yes, perfect, let’s live there?”

Because from a modern point of view, many Greek villages look like they were built after a family argument.

“Where should we build?”

“Near the water?”

“No.”

“Near the road?”

“No.”

“Near the flat land?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Then where?”

“Up there.”

“Where?”

“Behind that cliff, past the goats, above the ravine, next to the cloud.”

And somehow everyone agreed.

But they were not crazy.

They were practical.

Annoyingly practical.

We look at a mountain village today and see inconvenience.

They looked at it and saw survival.

The coast?

Beautiful, yes.

Also pirates.

The flat open plain?

Useful, yes.

Also armies, raiders, tax collectors, and anyone with a horse, a sword, a uniform, or a clipboard.

The hidden village halfway up a mountain?

Now we are talking.

Water from a spring.

Fields nearby.

Grazing land.

Wood.

A view of anyone coming to bother you.

And most importantly, distance from whatever empire, army, pirate crew, official, or cousin with a land dispute was currently passing through Greece.

This is why so many Greek villages are not where Google Maps thinks they should be.

Google Maps is thinking like a tourist.

The village was thinking like a grandmother.

“Don’t stand in the open. Someone will see you.”

Greek history is basically a long argument between beauty and danger.

The sea is beautiful.

The sea also brought people who wanted your wheat, your wine, your animals, your taxes, your house, and sometimes your entire afternoon.

So people moved inland.

Then uphill.

Then farther uphill.

Then one man named Giorgos said, “Maybe a little higher.”

And that became a village.

Not a town.

Not a city.

A village.

Because Greece is not one big flat country where you can draw a neat grid and say, “Here will be suburbia.”

Greece is mountains, valleys, islands, cliffs, ravines, peninsulas, hidden coves, stubborn rocks, sudden plateaus, and roads that look like they were designed by a drunk ribbon.

Every pocket of land became its own little world.

One spring.

One church.

One cemetery.

One kafeneio.

Three cousins.

Seven opinions.

A village.

In Epirus, people built stone villages into the mountains like they were negotiating directly with gravity.

In northern Greece, villages grew around orchards, rivers, tobacco fields, vineyards, cherries, peaches, beans, chestnuts, and whatever else the land was willing to give if you worked hard enough and complained properly.

In the Peloponnese, villages climbed hillsides, watched valleys, guarded passes, worked terraces, and stared suspiciously at the sea.

On the islands, people often avoided the obvious pretty harbor and built farther inland, because the obvious pretty harbor was also obvious to pirates.

In America, a town may be built because a railroad came through.

In Greece, a village may exist because 400 years ago someone found water, shade, decent soil, good air, and a place where trouble had to climb uphill first.

And honestly, that person was probably right.

Before cars, paved roads, delivery apps, and someone ordering patio furniture from Athens and complaining it took four days, people lived near what kept them alive.

The fields.

The animals.

The spring.

The trees.

The path to the church.

The land that fed them.

You did not commute from a stylish apartment in the city to tend cherries on a slope, gather chestnuts in the mountains, herd goats, or pick peaches before the heat came in.

You lived near the work.

You married near the work.

You raised children near the work.

You argued with your brother near the work.

Then your children inherited the work and argued with each other about it.

This is how villages happen.

Not through planning committees.

Through survival, land, family, suspicion, and inheritance.

Especially inheritance.

Greek inheritance has probably created more villages, lawsuits, and blood pressure medication than any empire.

One father has land.

He has four children.

Each child gets a piece.

Then each child has children.

Then those children get pieces of pieces.

Eventually one field has seventeen owners, one collapsing shed has emotional significance, and nobody can sell anything because cousin Maria in Patras refuses to sign.

This is not a real estate system.

It is a national personality test.

But it kept people attached to place.

The village was not just where you lived.

It was who you were.

Your people were there.

Your dead were there.

Your church was there.

Your family name was there.

Your shame was there.

Your gossip was definitely there.

You could leave, but the village did not leave you.

The village waited.

Quietly.

With a key under a flowerpot and one aunt saying, “You got fat.”

This is another thing outsiders miss.

A Greek village with 83 residents today may not always have been tiny.

Once, it had a school.

A full church on Sundays.

Children running everywhere.

Mules.

Smoke.

Bread ovens.

Fields worked by hand.

Weddings that lasted three days.

Funerals that lasted emotionally for decades.

Two kafeneia, because one kafeneio was never enough for people who were no longer speaking to each other.

Then came the big departures.

Athens.

Piraeus.

Chicago.

Melbourne.

Toronto.

Stuttgart.

Astoria.

Anywhere with jobs, factories, restaurants, construction, relatives, and the promise that maybe your children would not spend their lives chasing goats up a mountain or praying the crop survived the weather.

So the villages shrank.

The schools closed.

The young people left.

The old people stayed.

The houses locked up.

The summer people returned in August, opened the shutters, shook out the dust, lit the grill, and said, “Nothing changes here.”

But everything had changed.

Now you drive through and see ten houses, one church, one square, one old man, three cats, and a sign pointing to another village you cannot believe exists.

And you ask, “Why is this here?”

Because once it made perfect sense.

Because survival has different architecture than convenience.

To us, the middle of nowhere means no supermarket, no parking, no pharmacy, and no decent Wi-Fi.

To them, the middle of nowhere meant safety, water, food, family, and a fighting chance.

Also, probably, a better breeze.

Never underestimate the Greek ability to choose a location based on air movement.

“This place has good air,” someone says.

And suddenly we are building a village.

Not near a hospital.

Not near a school.

Not near anything.

But the air?

Excellent.

And of course, the church.

You cannot have a Greek village without a church.

Sometimes the church looks bigger than the population.

The village has 117 residents and the church looks prepared to receive the Byzantine emperor.

This is normal.

The church is not only a building.

It is the village’s identity card.

Saint’s day?

Everyone comes back.

Wedding?

Everyone comes back.

Funeral?

Everyone comes back.

Panigiri?

Everyone comes back, eats meat, dances badly, and remembers who they are.

The village may look empty in February.

But in August?

Suddenly every balcony has laundry, every courtyard has cousins, every grill is smoking, and every old argument has returned from Athens with a suitcase.

This is why Greek villages survive even when they do not seem to.

They exist physically.

But they also exist emotionally.

A village can have 189 residents and 3,655 people who claim it.

Ask any Greek where they are from and watch what happens.

They may have been born in Athens.

Their parents may have lived in Athens.

Their children may live in Athens.

But the answer will still be:

“We are from the village.”

The village may be three hours away, up a road that makes your GPS question its career choices.

Doesn’t matter.

That is the answer.

Because in Greece, origin is not always where you sleep.

It is where your people are buried.

Where your grandfather had land.

Where your grandmother made pies.

Where your uncle built a second floor without permits.

Where your father still insists the cherries tasted better before the young people left.

Where someone knows exactly who your family is and what they did in 1963.

That is the village.

So no, Greeks did not randomly build tiny villages in the middle of nowhere.

They built them in the middle of everything that mattered at the time.

Water.

Land.

Protection.

Family.

Faith.

Animals.

Crops.

A view.

A breeze.

A place to hide from pirates.

A place to argue with cousins.

A place to return to.

You may leave.

You may go to Athens.

You may go to America.

You may learn English.

You may buy a house with central air and a garage.

You may forget the road.

But the village remembers you.

And when you come back, someone will still be sitting in the square.

Someone will still know your father.

Someone will still ask if you are married.

Someone will still tell you where to park, even though there are only three cars.

Someone will still say, “You are Nikos’ boy, yes?”

And just like that, the middle of nowhere becomes the center of the world.

We spent a couple of days in Methoni, which is what you do when you live in Kalamata and suddenly remember there is an actual castle by the sea just sitting there, waiting for you to stop doing admin work.

Naturally, within the first eleven minutes, we found the bakery.

This is not travel advice. This is Greek survival.

Before you ask where the beach is, before you ask where the castle is, before you ask where to park without angering three generations of local residents, you locate the bakery.

The best one, as far as we could tell, was Athanasiou.

Established in 1904.

Of course it was.

Because in Greece, a bakery is not “new.” A bakery is either from 1904, from your grandmother’s village, or from a cousin who has very strong opinions about koulouri.

I asked the obvious question.

“Are you related to the famous Athanasiou in Kalamata?”

No, no, no, they said.

The Greek “no, no, no” is not a simple denial. It is a full municipal document. It means no, absolutely not, please do not confuse us with those people, although naturally we respect them, probably know them, may be connected through a baptism, but legally and spiritually no.

So I tried again.

“What about the other Athanasiou bakery in Kalamata? The one branded as Alesis?”

Oh no, they said.

Different Athanasiou.

Naturally.

Then, just when I thought the Athanasiou Bakery Map of Messinia could not get more complicated, they added:

“By the way, we are opening a bakery in Kalamata.”

Of course they are.

“Where?”

“On Avras.”

Now this time, for once, I did not have to nod like a man pretending to know.

I know exactly where Avras is.

This made the story even more dangerous, because now the new Athanasiou bakery was no longer an abstract future bakery somewhere in Kalamata. It had coordinates. It had a street. It had entered my personal carbohydrate radius.

There was only one problem.

They are waiting for a three-phase electricity connection.

Τριφασικό ρεύμα.

Because apparently you can have flour, ovens, recipes, family history, ambition, location, signage, and a bakery lineage dating back to 1904, but if DEH does not have the special box, the bread remains theoretical.

This is Greece at its most Greek.

A bakery can survive two world wars, occupation, civil war, dictatorship, inflation, the euro, the memoranda, tourists asking if baklava is vegan, and people ordering cappuccino freddo in February.

But the opening may still depend on whether somebody, somewhere, has the correct electrical box.

Siga, siga.

The croissants will wait.

Still, the question stayed with me.

What is it with Athanasiou and bakeries in Messinia?

Naturally, after this, I had to investigate.

Not seriously, you understand. I am not the BBC. I am a man who had already eaten bakery products and was now trying to justify it as research.

But the Athanasiou situation is not simple.

There is the Pylia original transformed into Methoni/Pylos line, proudly wearing the “since 1904” badge, which in Greek bakery years is basically prehistoric. This is the traditional side of the story: bread, dough, ovens, family recipes, and the kind of place where “established in 1904” does not feel like marketing so much as a warning that they have been doing this since before your grandfather had opinions.

Then there is Alesis, also carrying the 1904 inheritance, but with a more modern Kalamata identity. Alesis sounds clean, designed, branded. It comes from άλεση, the milling of wheat, which is exactly the kind of word that makes bread sound both ancient and ready for Instagram.

And then there is Athanasiou 1938, the famous Kalamata name, the one everybody seems to know. This branch went in a more pastry-and-sweets direction: the elegant boxes, the diples, the chocolates, the “we are bringing something to dinner and therefore civilization will continue” category of Greek life.

So what we have is not one bakery.

We have an Athanasiou baking constellation.

There is 1904.

There is 1938.

There is Pylia.

There is Pylos.

There is Methoni

There is Kalamata.

There is Alesis.

There is the famous one.

There is the other famous one.

There is the one that is absolutely not related.

This is Greece. A family name does not simply exist. It expands. It opens branches. It becomes a pastry counter. It becomes a local orientation system.

“Turn left after Athanasiou.”

“Which Athanasiou?”

Exactly.

And more importantly, this was not the first time Greece had given me a surname that felt less like a family name and more like a business plan.

In Ioannina, I saw a slipper shop.

A proper slipper shop. Shelves full of παντόφλες (pantofles). Soft ones, practical ones, old-lady ones, tourist ones, the kind your mother buys you because “the floor is cold,” even when the floor is not cold and you are 69 years old.

And there, above the store, was the name:

Pantoflopoulos.

A man selling slippers.

Named Pantoflopoulos.

At that point, what choice did he have?

You cannot be named Pantoflopoulos and open a sushi restaurant. That would be an act of rebellion against the ancestors.

In America, people say, “Follow your passion.”

In Greece, apparently, your must name your surname into retail.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized Greek surnames are full of occupational ghosts.

Papadopoulos means somewhere, somehow, there was a priest in the family story.

Mylonas points to a miller.

Psaras smells faintly of fish.

Raptis is a tailor.

Karvounis has charcoal somewhere in the ancestral smoke.

Sideris sounds like iron.

Bakalis belongs near a grocery counter.

Manavis belongs near fruit and vegetables, preferably while correcting you about tomatoes.

Kafetzis is never far from coffee.

Fournaris sounds suspiciously close to an oven.

And if your name is Psomas, I am sorry, but I expect bread.

Maybe not from you personally. I am reasonable. You may be an accountant. You may be a dentist. You may be an emotionally unavailable software engineer. But somewhere behind you, in the fog of the family tree, I expect a loaf.

Greek names carry history the way old houses carry damp.

They tell you about fathers, villages, occupations, physical features, priests, Turks, Venetians, islands, mountains, nicknames, trades, and some uncle nobody wants to discuss before the second coffee.

Sometimes the connection is real.

Sometimes it is ancient.

Sometimes it is accidental.

And sometimes it is just Greece having a little fun at your expense.

Of course, family names are not destiny. Nobody is required to become what the name suggests. A Papadopoulos does not have to enter the priesthood. A Psaras does not have to sell fish. A Raptis does not have to hem pants. A Karvounis is not legally obligated to appear in public covered in charcoal.

But in Greece, coincidence rarely stays small.

It gathers cousins.

It attracts theories.

It sits down, orders coffee, and becomes a story.

That is the real Greek profession: connecting things.

A name to a village.

A village to a grandmother.

A grandmother to a bakery.

A bakery to another bakery.

Another bakery to a family that is absolutely, definitely, certainly not related.

No, no, no.

Completely different Athanasiou.

Unless, of course, you go back far enough.

This is where every Greek conversation becomes genealogy with snacks.

You start by asking, “Is this bakery related to the one in Kalamata?”

Ten minutes later, you are learning that somebody’s mother was from Pylos, somebody’s brother-in-law knew your cousin in the Air Force, somebody had a shop near the old bus station, and the original family may have come from a village where half the people had the same last name and the other half were not speaking to them.

By then, you have bought two tiropites, a loaf of bread, and a small bag of koulourakia you did not technically need.

This is how they get you.

Not with marketing.

With lineage.

I am beginning to think Greek small businesses should not have logos. They should have family trees.

Forget “Since 1904.”

Give me the real information:

Athanasiou Bakery
Established 1904
Not related to the other Athanasiou
Probably related to somebody you know
Waiting for DEH
Three-phase electricity pending
Ask again after Easter

Now that is branding.

And Pantoflopoulos?

He needs no slogan.

The man achieved nominative perfection.

Maybe that is why I love these little discoveries so much.

They are not famous ruins. They are not UNESCO sites. They are not the things travel guides tell you to photograph.

They are storefronts.

Signs.

Names.

Conversations at counters.

So now I am investigating.

Not professionally, of course. This is Greece. Professional investigations require stamps.

I am conducting the more reliable kind: asking people behind counters while buying something I do not technically need.

If your name is Athanasiou and you own a bakery, please report to the nearest koulouri.

If your name is Pantoflopoulos and you sell slippers, congratulations. You have won Greece.

If your surname secretly matches your profession, please let me know. I am building a database.

Or possibly just an excuse to visit more bakeries.

Either way, research must continue.

With receipts.

And maybe a tiropita.

After our younger son left for college, Karen and I looked at each other across the quiet house and had the conversation many parents have when the last child leaves.

Now what?

For years, the house had been full of schedules, school calendars, groceries, laundry, sports, noise, worry, and our son announcing there was nothing to eat while standing in front of a refrigerator full of food.

Then suddenly, silence.

No backpacks.

No last-minute forms.

No teenage shoes creating a small archaeological site by the door.

Just us.

Two adults staring at each other like a committee that had lost its main project.

So we asked the dangerous question.

Maybe it was time to repurpose ourselves.

Europe?

Maybe.

Greece?

Now Karen became interested.

Very interested.

“Let’s go,” she said.

This is one of the many reasons I love my wife.

She is brave.

She is adventurous.

She is optimistic.

She also had absolutely no idea what she had just triggered.

Karen thought we were discussing a move.

A change of scenery.

A European adventure with better tomatoes.

What she did not know was that somewhere deep inside her husband, behind the American habits, the Costco membership, the Florida routines, the Publix muscle memory, and twenty-five years of marriage, another man was waiting.

Not hiding.

Waiting.

Nikolaos.

And Greece was about to wake him up.

Karen thought we were changing countries.

She did not know she had pressed the restore factory settings button.

That button should come with a warning label.

There are things your wife knows about you after twenty-five years.

How you take your coffee.

Which chair you prefer.

How you look when you are about to say something sarcastic but are making a brief attempt at civilization.

Which mood means, “Leave him alone for ten minutes.”

Which mood means, “Change the subject before he gives us a TED Talk no one requested.”

Karen knew me very well.

At least she knew the American versions.

California Nick.

Upstate New York Nick.

Florida Nick.

Husband Nick.

Father Nick.

The man who knew how to operate in American life.

Stand in line.

Answer emails.

Navigate parking lots.

Understand three grocery store chains.

Pretend weather over 95 degrees was still technically survivable.

Then we moved to Greece.

And another version began to appear.

Not dramatically.

There was no lightning over Kalamata.

No bouzouki music from the heavens.

No old village woman pointing at me and saying, “He has returned.”

It was quieter than that.

A phrase.

A reaction.

A look at a road.

A sudden opinion about bread.

A conversation with a stranger that lasted longer than Karen expected.

A small emotional ambush from something that, to her, looked perfectly ordinary.

A sign.

A smell.

A sound.

Karen had not moved to Greece with a new husband.

She had moved to Greece with the same husband in a place where an older part of him had more oxygen.

Maybe I did not know that part was still there either.

In America, I was Nick.

Nick fit on my driver’s license.

Nick answered emails.

Nick could survive American customer service.

That was my battlefield.

Refunds.

Complaints.

Bank lines.

T-Mobile lines.

Xfinity lines.

The mysterious American art of calling, waiting, pressing 1, pressing 3, pressing 0, being transferred, explaining the problem again, asking for a supervisor, and making something happen before the human spirit left my body entirely.

That part I could do.

I could negotiate.

I could complain.

I could escalate.

I could make a company regret putting me on hold.

But asking for a favor?

Different story.

Calling a restaurant and saying, basically, “I know your website says no, but can you help me?”

In America, that felt like asking a machine to develop a soul.

In Greece, something changed.

Here, I handle those things.

Not because Greece is easier.

Please.

Let us not lose our minds.

I handle them because I can feel my way through them.

I can hear the person on the other end of the phone.

Not just the words.

The mood.

The hesitation.

The opening.

The moment when the official answer is no, but the human answer might still be yes.

Yesterday, for example, we had a visitor from the States.

I suggested to Karen that we try a new restaurant within walking distance.

I checked online.

No reservation available until 10:30.

Too late.

In America, the website would have spoken.

In Greece, the website had merely expressed an opinion.

So I called.

A few minutes later, we had a table at 8:00.

Easy peasy.

Native language.

Native instincts.

Native favor-detection system.

That is the difference.

In America, I knew how to push.

In Greece, I know how to ask.

That surprised Karen.

It surprised me too.

Old instincts came back before I realized they had gone anywhere.

I could hear when a sentence was not finished.

I could see a small hesitation and know another document was coming.

I could tell when “no problem” meant no problem, and when “no problem” meant the problem had just entered the building wearing sunglasses.

This is not knowledge you learn from a website.

It sits in your bones.

Then one day you are standing in a Greek square, sipping a freddo cappuccino with your American wife, and suddenly you are not just translating words.

You are translating atmosphere.

Other things came back too.

My voice, for example.

In America, I thought I spoke normally.

Karen may have other legal testimony, but this is my story.

In Greece, my volume adjusted itself to the landscape.

A balcony requires one level.

A family table requires another.

A conversation with a man across the street who may or may not be part of the conversation requires full public-service announcement mode.

Karen discovered that Greek is not always a language you speak.

Sometimes it is a language you launch.

And then there were the conversations.

In America, small talk had rules.

How are you?

Good.

And how are you?

Wonderful.

Everybody lies politely and moves on.

In Greece, a simple exchange can become a full investigation.

Where are you from?

Where were you born?

How long were you in America?

Why did you come back?

Do you have children?

Where are they?

Do you rent or own?

What floor?

Is the building quiet?

Do you know this person?

Of course you know this person.

No?

You must know his cousin.

Sit down.

Karen watched me enter these conversations as if I had been given a password I did not know I still remembered.

Outside a shop.

At a bakery counter.

Beside a parked car.

Near a table at a taverna.

Within minutes, I was no longer just a customer.

I was a file being updated.

At first, Karen looked at me as if to say, “Do you know this person?”

No.

Of course not.

That is not the point.

In Greece, knowing the person is optional.

Entering the conversation is mandatory.

And somehow, I knew how.

That was the part Karen saw.

Not just that I spoke Greek.

Not just that I knew the foods, the streets, the jokes, the paperwork traps.

She saw me recognize things I could not always explain.

Small things.

Ordinary things.

Things that do not announce themselves as important.

A faded sign.

A chipped marble step.

An old man with worry beads.

Someone saying “έλα” into a phone and somehow fitting five meanings into two syllables.

These things do not make you cry.

They do something more dangerous.

They make you quiet.

Karen notices that.

She notices when I stop making jokes.

That is when she knows something has reached me.

Not the Instagram Greece.

Not the staged Greece.

The other Greece.

The one that sits there smoking, complaining, feeding you, confusing you, welcoming you, ignoring you, and somehow recognizing you at the same time.

That is the Greece that brought back Nikolaos.

Not the dramatic returning-home version.

Real life is messier.

I did not come back and become a village elder.

I did not start wearing black, quoting Kazantzakis, and blessing olive trees.

I still check my phone too much.

I still get irritated by bad websites.

I still want things to work.

I still like air conditioning.

Well.

Sometimes.

In America, the Greek part of me had learned to behave.

It did not disappear.

It just got compressed into a more convenient travel size.

Then Greece opened the suitcase.

Not neatly.

Nothing in Greece opens neatly.

Sometimes it was funny.

Sometimes exhausting.

Sometimes beautiful.

Sometimes all three before lunch.

That is what Karen had to meet.

Not a new husband.

The same husband in a different order.

Same Nick.

That reset button really should have come with a large warning label.
