And I don’t think the answer is planning activities for every hour of the day.

We don’t need to entertain our kids all day.

What does make a difference is having a few simple ideas ready before you need them.

Because when there’s already something interesting to build, find, pour, pretend with or explore, it becomes much easier to say:

“Why don’t you try this?”

instead of automatically reaching for the TV or tablet.

That’s the little system I try to use in our home: have a few easy options ready → make them accessible → and let the kids take the play from there.

So, I planned your next five days for you.

Here are 5 simple screen-free play ideas for this week — nothing complicated, nothing Pinterest-perfect, and most use things you probably already have at home.

MONDAY — Toy Parade

Grab a few favorite toy animals, cars, or figurines and invite your child to make a parade.

They can line them up, sort them, create a parade route or simply march them around the house.

This is one of those activities that barely needs a setup but can turn into so much pretend play.

You set out the invitation. Let them decide where the play goes.

TUESDAY — Alphabet Scavenger Hunt

Write letters on a big piece of paper and put it on the wall or floor.

Then write the same letters on sticky notes and hide them around the house.

Let your child hunt around the house to find + match them.

You can make it easier with just a few letters or make it more challenging by matching uppercase letters with lowercase letters.

This is exactly how I like learning to feel at home — less like sitting down to practice and more like playing.

But here’s something I’ve learned about screen-free play...

Having a list of activities definitely helps.

But if you want screen-free play to become easier in your home, you need more than a list of things to do.

You need to know how to make those ideas work in your everyday routine.

How do you encourage your child to actually start playing?

What do you do when they immediately say, “I’m bored”?

How can you help them choose something to do without always needing you to come up with the idea?

And how do you make screen-free options easier to reach for in the first place?

Okay, back to this week’s play ideas.

WEDNESDAY — Build a Bridge

Grab some craft sticks, painter’s tape and a few toy cars or animals or little counting bears.

Then give your child a simple challenge:

Can you build a bridge that your car can drive across?

They can experiment with it and see how many toys it can hold.

A very simple setup suddenly becomes building, experimenting and problem-solving.

THURSDAY — Bring the Beach Inside

Add kinetic sand to a bin with a few beach toys, scoops or small cups.

That’s it.

Let them scoop, pour, dig, bury toys and build their own little indoor beach.

I love sensory setups like this because they don’t need a complicated end goal.

Set it out and let your child decide what happens next.

Sometimes those are the activities that keep them playing the longest.

FRIDAY — Roll & Drop

Tape an empty paper roll vertically to a wall or cabinet.

Put some pom-poms nearby along with a dice.

Your child rolls the dice, counts the dots and drops that many pom-poms through the tube.

Roll → count → drop → repeat.

It’s ridiculously simple, but that combination of counting + dropping is exactly the kind of repetitive play little kids love.

And they’re sneaking in a little counting practice at the same time.

I want to leave you with one reminder:

The goal of screen-free play isn’t to fill every minute of your child’s day with an activity.

Kids need boredom.

They need time to wander around, make up games, build things, look at books and figure out what to do next.

We don’t need to become our children’s full-time entertainment.

But there are also those moments when having one good idea ready can completely change the direction of the afternoon.

And the more we create an environment where books, toys, art supplies and simple activities are easy to choose, the less we have to be the ones constantly coming up with something for them to do.

That’s what I want these weekly ideas and my Screen-Free Activity Guide — to help you create.

Not more things to add to your parenting to-do list.

A simple system that makes screen-free play easier for everyone.

I’ve been doing this for a while now, and it’s honestly one of the easiest ways to feel like I’ve got my week handled before it even starts. Instead of scrambling at 4pm when everyone’s melting down, I pull out something I prepped on Sunday and it buys me the breathing room I actually need.

Here’s what a week looks like:

Monday: Pom-Pom Caterpillars

Grab some craft sticks, pipe cleaners, pom-poms, and glue. Draw a little face on each stick, twist on some pipe cleaner antennae, and let your kid glue the pom-poms down the body. It’s a fine motor goldmine disguised as the cutest caterpillar you’ve ever seen.

Tuesday: Crazy Hair Bead Threading

Cut out a cardboard circle, draw a silly face, and poke holes along the top. Stick pipe cleaners through for hair, then let your child thread matching beads onto each one. Color matching + fine motor + independent play? Yes please.

Wednesday: Sticker Math

Write simple addition problems on craft sticks (1+1, 2+2, 3+2). Hand over some dot stickers or smiley stickers. They count out the answer and stick it right on. No worksheets. No tears. Just learning that feels like play.

Thursday: Paper Arches

Cut strips of colorful paper and dot colored dots ( 2 for each color). Set out some glue and show them how to make an arch and stick it down. That’s it. Your kids will definitely be asking to repeat this activity because it’s that fun.

Friday: Play-Dough Shape Challenges

Pull out the play dough, a rolling pin, and make a few simple task cards (a sun, a house, a flower). Let them roll, squish, and build to match. It’s creative, it’s calming, and it stretches their problem-solving muscles without them even realizing it.

That’s the whole week.

Five activities. One short prep session. And suddenly you’re the mom with a plan instead of the mom Googling “what to do with a bored 4-year-old” at 3pm.

Once they start a good one, they won’t want to put it down. These are great for kids who are ready for longer stories and want to feel like “real readers.”

2. Graphic Novels (Ages 5+)

These are amazing for kids who say “I don’t like reading.” The pictures help carry the story, and before you know it — they’ve read the whole thing.

3. Funny Books (Ages 3–7)

If it makes them giggle, they’ll ask to read it every single night.

Trust me. Silly stories = repeat reads = happy kids = happy parents.

4. Picture Books (Ages 2–6)

Pretty pictures and sweet stories.

Perfect for snuggling up together at bedtime. These are the books that become childhood favorites , the ones they’ll remember forever. 💛

5. Interactive Board Books (Ages 0–3)

Flaps to lift. Textures to touch. Things to find.

Reading that feels like play! These are perfect for babies and toddlers who want to do something while you read together.

6. Non-Fiction Books (Ages 4+)

For kids who love to ask “why?” and “how?”

Dinosaurs, space, animals, trucks, bugs — all the cool stuff. These books feed their curiosity and teach them about the real world.

For a long time that was me. Until I stopped fighting screens and started being intentional about them instead.

These are the 3 things that changed everything –

1. We use a visual timer every single time

Toddlers have no concept of time. When you say “just 2 more minutes” they genuinely do not know what that means. So when the screen goes off it feels sudden and unfair to them and that is where the meltdown comes from.

A visual timer changed that for us completely.

Now my kids can see the time running out. They watch it disappear. So when the screen goes off it is not a surprise they saw it coming. The transition became so much smoother almost overnight.

It also teaches them something really valuable. Waiting. Understanding limits. Knowing that things come to an end. These are big skills for little kids and a visual timer does a lot of that work quietly in the background.

2. I always have something ready for after

This one sounds simple but it made a huge difference.

Before I turn the screen off I make sure there is something already set up and waiting for them. A sensory bin. A painting station. Playdough on the table. Something that is simple to set up and they can walk straight into without any gap.

Because that gap , that moment between screens going off and figuring out what to do next that is where the meltdown lives.

When there is something exciting already waiting for them they are curious about what it is. Sometimes they turn the screen off themselves because they want to go explore it. It also connects back to what I really believe in — play based learning. The activity after the screen is not just a distraction. It is where the real learning happens. Hands on, open ended, exploratory play. That is what I want filling most of their day.

3. I got really intentional about what they are actually doing on screen

This one is the most important one for me.

Not all screen time is the same. Mindlessly watching cartoons is very different from something that is genuinely educational and engaging.

What they are watching matters to me. Is it safe? Is it teaching them something? Is it made for their age? These are the questions I ask every single time. Because handing my kid a screen and hoping for the best is not something I am okay with.

What they really need is to move, touch, explore, and play.

Because at this age, learning isn’t about memorizing , it’s about experiencing.

And the simplest activities at home often teach them far more than any worksheet ever could.

Here are a few easy ways to turn everyday play into meaningful learning:

• If you grab a muffin tray and hide some counting bears or pom poms in it, you’ve just created a hands-on hide-and-seek counting activity. Your toddler gets to explore, search, and count — all through play.

• If you want to build early reading skills, try a simple letter sound hunt around the house. Pick a sound and ask your child to find something from their toys that begins with it. It turns learning into a game they actually enjoy.

• You can also take their favorite blocks and set up a “build the town” activity. While they play and create, they’re naturally counting, stacking, and making sense of numbers in a real way.

• When they’re ready to practice writing, just grab a tray and sprinkle some salt from your pantry. It becomes a fun sensory space where they can trace letters, feel what they write, and remember it better.

• For quiet time, hide letters or numbers in kinetic sand. It becomes a mini treasure hunt — keeping them engaged while reinforcing what they’ve learned.

• And something as simple as paper tunnels and cars can turn into a playful phonics activity. Write letters on the tunnels and ask your toddler to drive through the one that makes a certain sound. It’s learning, disguised as fun.

When you start looking closely, you’ll realize this:

You don’t need fancy setups or complicated plans.

Every toy, block, and little game at home already holds the potential for learning.

All it takes is a small shift and a little curiosity.

When children engage in play-based activities, they aren’t just staying busy.
They’re building skills that shape how they think, feel, and grow — quietly, naturally, and without pressure.

And after countless road trips and far too many last-minute Target runs, I’ve realized two things:

1️⃣ Don’t pack too much.
When kids have too many options, they somehow end up doing… nothing.

2️⃣ A few good favorites can make all the difference.
The right items can buy you silence, calm, creativity — and even a warm cup of coffee you can actually finish.

With the holiday travel season just around the corner, here’s our tried-and-true list — the things that have actually worked for us every single time (and are fully kid-approved!).

🧳 Our Holiday Travel Must-Haves

1. Mini Magna-Tiles Travel Kit
This tiny kit has saved us so many times — on road trips, at restaurants, even during long waits at the airport. It’s small enough to toss in any bag, but packed with open-ended play that keeps little hands busy and imaginations buzzing. My kids build mini scenes, shapes, towers… and it buys us those precious quiet moments every parent needs during holiday travel. Truly a lifesaver every single time.

2. Doodle Board
This is one of those travel must-haves I never leave home without. My kids use it to draw, play tic-tac-toe, practice letters, make silly doodles — truly anything their imagination comes up with. It’s lightweight, mess-free, and keeps them entertained anywhere.

3. Giiker Super Slide Puzzle
This screen-free brain game is pure magic for keeping kids busy and building real thinking skills. My 8-year-old is absolutely obsessed — the mix of logic, problem-solving, and hands-on play keeps him engaged for so long, especially on long trips or restaurant waits. It’s challenging in the best way, totally portable, and one of those toys that quietly builds confidence while they’re having fun.

4. Paint by Sticker Books
We introduced these to my older one when he was 5, and he’s been hooked ever since. These books are seriously the best — calming, creative, and so satisfying for kids who love completing a project. They’re perfect for travel days because they keep little hands busy without any mess, and the final pictures always make my kids feel so proud. Truly one of our all-time favorite quiet-time activities.

5. Graphic Novels for My Older One
Graphic novels are my secret travel hack — my older one can get lost in them for hours. They’re fun, fast-paced, and keep him quietly entertained whether we’re on a long drive or waiting at a restaurant. His all-time favorites are Press Start, Dog Man (of course!), InvestiGators, and Magic Tree House. If you have a young reader who loves humor and adventure, these are absolute gold for travel days.

6. Board Books for My 3-Year-Old
For my 3-year-old, interactive board books are everything. She can flip, poke, tap, lift, and explore — and it keeps her happily busy wherever we go. Her current favorites are The Boo Boo Book, Poke-A-Dot, and the Cook in a Book series. These tiny, sturdy books are perfect for travel days because they entertain little ones without any mess or noise. Total lifesavers for toddlers on the go!

7. Highlights Hidden Pictures
Highlights Hidden Pictures are an absolute gold mine. So fun, so engaging, and they truly work for every age — both of my kids adore them. They’re perfect for travel days because once they start hunting for those tiny objects, they stay focused for such a long time. Simple, screen-free, and endlessly entertaining… these books always come with us.

8. Yoto Player
We are never traveling without our Yoto Player — truly, never. It’s one of the greatest inventions for screen-free fun, and not just fun… the learning cards are incredible too. Stories, music, mindfulness, facts — my kids stay engaged without needing a screen, and it makes every trip so much smoother. I honestly don’t know what we’d do without it.

9. Spotify Podcasts for Kids
On days when we just want something different — we turn to kids’ podcasts on Spotify. There are so many amazing, free options, and they make travel time feel calm and cozy. My 3-year-old is obsessed with Gardenkeeper Gus, while my older one loves Lucy WOW. Such an easy, screen-free way to keep kids entertained and learning on the go.

10. Melissa & Doug Puffy Stickers
Stickers and toddlers are best friends — and when they’re reusable, it’s an absolute jackpot. These Melissa & Doug puffy sticker sets are my daughter’s favorite. The scenes are adorable, the stickers peel on and off easily, and there’s so much room for imaginative play and storytelling. Perfect for road trips, flights, restaurants… anywhere you need a quiet, happy toddler.

11. Favorite Snacks from Good Brands
No trip with kids is complete without snacks — they’re basically travel survival gear. We try to make conscious choices and pick healthier options with simple, real ingredients. Some of our absolute favorite brands are Made Good, Annie’s, and Simple Mills. They’re tasty, kid-approved, and keep everyone happy between stops.

12. Coloring Books
You can never go wrong with coloring books. They’re such a classic, dependable activity for kids of any age. I either grab a few from Dollar Tree (because why not!) or print pages with their favorite characters before a trip. Simple, creative, and always a hit — coloring books are one of those things that just work every single time.

Traveling with kids isn’t always easy, but having the right things in your bag makes such a big difference. I hope this list helps make your holiday trips a little smoother, a little calmer, and a lot more joyful.

So today, I’m sharing my Playful Parent’s Holiday Survival Kit — a cozy collection of 10 screen-free, low-prep activities that’ll keep your little ones learning, creating, and joyfully occupied while you catch your breath (and maybe finish that cup of coffee while it’s still warm ☕).

🖍️ 1. DIY Coloring Poster
Tape a big sheet of paper on the table and draw a giant holiday scene — think snowmen, gifts, or trees. Hand over crayons and markers, and let the kids turn it into a family masterpiece. It’s the perfect calm corner when you need a few quiet minutes.

🎄 2. Pom Pom Tree
Grab some painter’s tape and shape a Christmas tree right on the wall — but this time, stick it sticky side out! Hand your little one a bowl of colorful pom poms and let them “decorate” the tree by pressing them on. It’s festive, hands-on, and keeps tiny fingers busy while building focus and fine motor skills.
