It Can Happen Like This

Sometimes, we’re compelled by something deep within us, to destroy. We may burn our own houses down, slash our ways through a city-of-monsters wearing high heels and ties, emit poisonous fumes from our smoking nostrils on our ways out from lives that strangle us, to a life we don’t understand yet, in a God-knows-where place.

Some people may argue that this volcanic-ash movement that emerges from deep within must be a dysfunction. It must mean that something in us has snapped, like a guitar string with the keys turned too tightly. That the nervous tension made us crazy. Why else would we leave the comfortable torment of our lives for the unknowable adventure of becoming true?

After all, what we don’t know may kill us, but people having this experience know that what they DO know absolutely WILL. Kill our spirits, our dreams, our truths. It will leaves us to die in the streets starving for beauty.

It can happen like this: a mysterious rose petal falls upon miles of sidewalk in free roaming prisons of concrete towers, and we realize that it is the first morsel of food our souls have had in weeks or months or decades.

It can happen like this: Our hearts are struck by the lightening of loss or of love, and we are shocked awake. We hadn’t realized we were going numb and cold for so long. We remember that this simulation we call life will end and another will begin, and in-between these upticks in awareness and aliveness is where most of life happens. We realize we must find the antidote to being lulled to sleep and pulled under the sea or we will miss most of our lives.

It can happen like this: Something great and ancient is awoken inside of us that we didn’t know lived there, and it is ravenous and ready to tear through the paper mâché of the only world we’ve known before. Somehow, we realize, we are wrapped around this mythical creature, this mystical moving sense, and if we fight for the life we are creaking awake from, it will tear us apart.

No matter how it happens to us, or when, or how many times, may we understand that when it is time for new islands to rise out of the sea, and old continents to sink, that we are volcano-gods and mer-persons.

When the lightening causes the tower to wobble, may we remember why we have grown so long our hair, or what really compelled us to collect feathers that remind us of our great mythical wings.

When the single moment of beauty causes a glitch in the fabric of the parts of our lives we are living falsely, that were once true long ago, may we have the courage to embark on the journey to find the place where beauty lives, boundless, endless, constantly and ecstatically.

Wearing a mask is a profound act, not to be taken lightly. It involves concealing one's true self, stifling one's voice, and assuming a role assigned by society. For autistic and neurodivergent individuals, this path can be treacherous. However, it is not limited to we alone; everyone faces risks when masking their true identities. Nonetheless, our focus here is on the unique challenges faced by the neurodivergent community.

It is imperative to remove your mask before it consumes you. Remember to take off the mask you're wearing before donning another. Make it a habit to gaze at your authentic face in the mirror every morning and night. Never forget the spark in your eyes. Never forget the melody that accompanied your journey into this bewildering world.

To wear a mask is to imprison oneself. It is a deceptive facade that can fool not only others but also the person behind it. It is an energetic and magical artifact that can make you lose sight of who you truly are.

When you forget who you are, your life loses its essence. Your internal compass goes awry, much like a needle near a powerful magnet. Layers upon layers of falsehoods accumulate until you are buried beneath them, unable to recall your true name.

Neurodivergents Thrive in the Creative Life

As I reflect on the journey of motherhood and the discovery of my son's neurodivergence, I am struck by the realization of my own undiagnosed autism and the impact it has had on my life. It has become clear to me that there are so many of us out there, just now realizing that we are neurodivergent, and the lack of support for adults in this community is glaringly apparent.

For many of us, the path to self-discovery only began when our children were diagnosed, as there is little understanding or acknowledgment of adult neurodivergence. We have spent years masking and shapeshifting to fit into a neurotypical society, only to burn out from the ongoing charade. But now, as we embrace our true selves, we are reclaiming our birthright and finding salvation in our creativity.

As I watch my son embrace his true nature with ongoing joy and wonder, I am reminded that our greatest joys are our high and holy alignment with nature and eternity. We don't need to see the road ahead to know the way; we are beacons in the dark and wild waters, illuminating the path with our neurodivergent rainbow-star light.

Letter #1: There is no such thing as falling behind, at least not for us.

There is no such thing as falling behind, at least not for us. The concept of being neurotypical and conforming to societal expectations does not align with our perspective on the world or our sense of morality. We are free from the need to compare ourselves to others or meet certain milestones. We play a different game, one that values deeper things in life. It is up to you to decide what truly matters, for yourself and your own journey.

You, my dear child, are not typical. To be typical implies being average, and you are far from average. If you measure yourself against neurotypicals and their timelines of self-importance and achievement, you may feel inadequate. However, if your values align with deeper truths, their judgments won't matter at all.

We all wear masks, not just autistic individuals. But for us, it is a conscious effort. We are aware of the need to fit in, even when it feels completely foreign to us. Why do we subject ourselves to this? Because we believe it is the only way to live. But it's simply not true.

My sweet child, there is a vast and wonderful world out there for you. There are places where your unique gifts will be welcomed, honored, and celebrated. Abundance can be found in many forms, not just material wealth. You could have it all if you stay true to yourself, exploring your passions and developing your talents. Be a genius in your own unique approach to life, and see how many neurotypicals may benefit from your touch of magic and your different set of values. Align always with your authentic self, and the material things you need will come to you.

Never believe them if they try to tell you that there is something wrong with you. Our neurotype pushes the whole human race forward. Society may label it as a defect, but it is not. And in this time of great change, on a national and global scale, there has never been a better time to embrace being different.

To be different, shows strength. To be divergent, is power.

As we continue our journey towards a more inclusive society, it is imperative that we challenge the prevailing misconceptions and biases surrounding autism. Let us embark on an enlightening exploration of the true brilliance and unique perspectives that autistic individuals bring to the table.

Firstly, we must acknowledge that competence and understanding in autistic people should never be measured solely by our outward presentations. Presuming competence is the key. Autistics and our allies must refuse infantilization, for it is through this lens of presumption of competence that we can truly appreciate the vast capabilities that lie within us.

Diversity is the essence of progress. Autistic individuals, just like anyone else, are allowed to embrace our differences, and deserve the spaces in which to do so without being socially, financially or medically penalized. We owe it to ourselves and to the world to celebrate the beauty of our distinct qualities, rather than striving for sameness and homogeneity. Remember, it is our differences that foster innovation and push the boundaries of human potential.

To those who pity us, I invite you to step into our world for a day. Experience the kaleidoscope of sensory richness and depth that we perceive. You will find that this newfound perspective holds the power to transform your life and amplify your happiness.

It is crucial to recognize that the qualities in autistic individuals often criticized and penalized by the neurotypical world are superficial social niceties and empty conversations that pale in comparison to the genuine empathy and connection we experience among our neurodivergent peers.

The burden of adjustment should not solely rest on autistic individuals (especially not children). Instead, let us advocate for accommodations that align with our unique specifications; we know what accomodations we and our autistic children need. It is time to dismantle conversion therapy programs, combat poverty, and eradicate isolation. Together, we can create a world where inclusivity thrives.

Empathy without understanding is an incomplete alliance. If you believe in the so-called “superpowers” of autistic individuals, but fail to empathize with our struggles, there is more work to be done. True allies embrace both the strengths and challenges that come with neurodivergence.
