In my TAPE era I kept things brief. 8 tracks or fewer, 15 minutes or less. baelei—under a different moniker at the time—was one of only a few producers willing to sell me beats. Songs like “Bearshitpope,” “Not A Whole Lot,” and “Rap Like I Act Like” (to name a few) remain personal favorites. The tapes dropped when they were done with no singles or planned rollout. It was a period of throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks and finding out if I could actually make something worth listening to. Sometimes I want to go back…

So I did.

If I Pay My Mind No Mind was nearly called TAPE 6, and, while I’m leaving that naming convention in the past, it essentially is. baelei sent the beat pack, I picked 5, called on some friends for features, and now it’s in your hands. 5 tracks, 12 minutes. I hope you like it.

I can’t lie…a NAHreally Shade 45 freestyle is not something I really ever imagined happening, so big shoutout to Homeboy Sandman for putting me on (and to DJ Eclipse and The Cain Marko as well). Was I nervous? Very. Did I do what I had to do? Of course. It had been a minute since I felt those kind of nerves rapping. A nice reminder how far out on a limb I keep going.

It’s cool to track how my delivery has changed on these songs over the years and also occasionally a little strange to re-record lyrics I wrote four or more years ago. Boy Sand is one of my absolute favorite MCs. I’ve been listening to him for at least 15 years, and I’m not exaggerating when I say his 2020 album Don’t Feed The Monster completely changed how I look at writing rhymes. When he emailed me I honestly thought he was trying to get on one of the shows I organize, but no—he was asking me to do a set at his album release show. Crazy.

The album in question is Resonance Frequency, a collaboration between him and producer Jack Splash that comes out that same day on 7/31. The show is at The Wood Shop in Williamsburg and will feature myself, Leo Coltrane, and Homeboy Sandman + Jack Splash as well as DJ Danny NYC and host K Gaines. Tickets are $20 if you buy them early and $25 on the day of the show. This one is likely to sell out though, so you probably want to act fast.

Best of all, the show runs from 7-10pm, so you can either be in bed early or go do something else after. The flyer is below with full details, and when you do buy your ticket, keep in mind that I’m on first, so make sure you come early.

The Extra Cheese lyric booklet is now available on the world wide web. At the link below, you’ll find the full book alongside an embedded album stream so you can read along as you listen. I’ll have print copies for sale at shows, but for those of you not in the Northeast US, there’s a link to buy a copy at the bottom of the page.

Making this book was a really fun challenge. When I recruited Nate and Thomas to write for it, I hadn’t fully grasped how much work it would be to lay out a book. After a long learning curve, I finally got the hang of Affinity Publisher and made it happen. The formatting process actually ended up being kind of relaxing—if you’re into that sort of thing.

Anyway, I feel like I should mention I used AI to create the digital version. I’m no huge fan of AI when it comes to art and creativity, but I’ll admit I was a little curious about Claude Code. I ultimately decided that, since I compensated the human writers and visual artists involved and designed the book myself, it would be ok to get this thing up on the internet with robot assistance. I can’t lie though, I’m still feeling ambivalent! I certainly had the vision for how it would look/function and it felt like (creative) work to prompt my way into a final product—but something about using it at all still doesn’t totally sit right with me. I’d love to know what people think. Am I being a luddite? Or did I just step onto a slippery slope?

Either way, I’m happy to have a spot where people can stream the album in full and read all the lyrics and essays in one place.

HUGE thank you to everyone who has purchased the album on vinyl or CD. Vinyl just sold out on Bandcamp, but we do have about 25 CDs left on there. For my people in the Northeast US, I’ll have limited copies of the album at shows on the EXTRA SUFFERING TOUR; and for people in Europe, there are limited copies available via HHV.

Some thank yous are definitely in order: To ialive for mixing the album, Steel Tipped Dove for mastering, Michael Stone for the artwork (+ Chrissy and Dani for helping with the photo shoot), and Zilla Rocca for putting the album out. This is a DIY enterprise, but the Y is a little misleading because I get a ton of help from a whole bunch of talented people every step of the way.

Extra Cheese: The Book?

As I finished making Extra Cheese, I decided I wanted to try something new. Inspired by copies of Rhys Langston’s Language Arts Unit: A Rap Textbook and Caltrops Press zines on my bookshelf, I set out to make a companion booklet to go along with Extra Cheese. The result is 38 pages long, featuring three essays, song lyrics, and track-by-track liner notes. Here’s how it came together:

My first call went to Nate LeBlanc, host of Dad Bod Rap Pod and one of the first rap opinion-havers to really give me the time of day. He was kind enough to contribute an essay entitled “How to Listen to NAHreally” as well as track-by-track liner notes to go along with my lyrics. My second call went to Thomas Mattera, a longtime friend and cheesemaker at Oaklands Farm in Gardiner, ME. His essay, “Moving at the Speed of Life,” about cheesemaking and life kicks things off. The final call came from inside the house: The booklet ends with an essay called “On Cheesiness” by me, which is reproduced below.

My initial plan was to sell the book only at shows, but since a few people have asked, I went ahead and set up a print-on-demand link for those of you who are not in the Northeast US and might want to buy one. It costs $10 + shipping.

STREAM MODERATELY WELL

This video was shot in my apartment by Michael Stone after we watched the Pats defeat the Texans in January. Michael had made this really cool video of an entire bottle of ketchup being poured onto a burger a few years ago, and it always cracked me up. Once Extra Cheese became the album title, it didn’t take long for me to ask if I could steal the idea. We ended up using four cans of Easy Cheese in four takes. I ate a small amount, and Michael had none.

I’ve been working with Michael on this kind of stuff for a literal decade. This album makes 8/10 artworks done by him. There’s a major in-person component to the way we work on these. Once we agree on an idea, we meet up then he makes it happen while I help however I can. I’m usually involved in getting the shot, but not quite so involved in the lengthy preparation to set the shot up. Because of that, I kind of just pace around and watch. And in all that watching, I’ve learned one thing: In order to be a great photographer—in this case videographer—you have to be a master of light.

Let’s start with the most immediate (like, tomorrow or tonight immediate): Another Rap Show #13 on Thursday August 7th at Secret Pour in Brooklyn featuring Dot Dev, Slim Carrey, miles cooke, Yolanda Watson, and Beatsgotdan. If you’re in NYC, this lineup is one you definitely do not want to miss. It’s wild to think it’s been almost two years since our first show in September 2023—if you haven’t been to one of these yet, now would be a good time to start coming.

Grief Club (Esh & The Isolations x Andrew) - Mournings

Grief Club is a duo made up of Esh & The Isolations and Andrew. Their debut album as a group is called Good Mournings, and it’s intense, sad, funny, beautiful, and everything in between. I was lucky enough to get to record my verse on “Mournings” IRL at Esh’s studio while we were on tour together in spring 2024.

ialive - “Infinity Pool”

from Quietism

ialive’s new album, Quietism, is reflective without ever getting too heavy—in large part due to his ear for neck-snapping, bouncy instrumentals. This project has already been in heavy rotation for me, and I have a feeling it’ll stay there. Our track “Infinity Pool” is produced by Garfunkle, one of several talented producers featured on Quietism.

Asterisk - “Stock Footage” (with cropscropscrops)

No School is a producer album featuring 20 (by my count) different rappers. Showcasing skills both musical and logistical, Greg Davis (aka Asterisk) put together an impressively cohesive sampling of MCs spanning eras and ages. Greg paired me with cropscropscrops on the track “Stock Footage”—a song cropscropscrops and I got to perform together in Burlington, VT, at a show Greg put together on my tour with Wave Generators.
