On a January night in 1968, a 38-year-old woman began behaving violently inside a house near Redwood City, California. According to contemporary newspaper reports, she tore at her hair. She threw herself against walls and the floor. She went into convulsions. The people around her did not call an ambulance. They covered her with a blanket and left her in a corner. By the time somebody finally summoned medical help the following morning, Lois Dodd Delattre had apparently been dead for hours.

And then, slowly, Lois began to disappear.

Not physically; her death was reported by the newspapers, and the sheriff investigated; there was an autopsy. But in the histories of the consciousness-expansion movement that surrounded her, the violent reality of those final hours became something quieter, something almost spiritual. That is where the case file becomes interesting.

The Woman Hidden Behind the Counterculture

Lois Delattre was not simply an anonymous casualty of the 1960s drug culture. She was a psychologist who worked for the Esalen Institute, the Big Sur centre that became one of the most influential laboratories of the Human Potential Movement.

Esalen occupied a peculiar intersection of the 1960s counterculture: Eastern religion, humanistic psychology, encounter groups, altered consciousness and psychedelics all moved through the same cultural orbit. And Lois was not standing at its edges. A history of Esalen described her as a “bright, attractive, restless young woman”. She had participated in its first residential programme and later worked in its San Francisco office.

More importantly, she appears to have been a connector.

It was Lois who introduced writer George Leonard to Esalen co-founder Michael Murphy. Their subsequent conversation helped cement an intellectual partnership built around the belief that the 1960s represented a profound transformation in human consciousness. That makes what happened afterwards more uncomfortable. Because Lois was not merely observing the experiment. She was living inside it.

The “Peace Pill”

The first contemporary newspaper account is brutal.

Lois was reported to have taken a capsule before arriving at a Saturday afternoon gathering. The drug was described as a “peace pill” and, in one report, as an animal tranquilliser. Witnesses said she began behaving strangely.

Then came the frenzy; she reportedly threw herself against walls and the floor so violently that a sheriff’s deputy said her injuries made it appear as though she had been beaten “from head to foot with a baseball bat”. Her scalp was reportedly exposed in places where she had torn at her own hair. Then came the convulsions. Her companions covered her with a blanket and left her.

When they checked her the following morning, she was still lying in the same position. A second newspaper report makes the timeline even worse.

Investigators concluded that the people present had shown “poor judgment” by failing to summon medical assistance. No charges were filed because investigators apparently concluded that no actual crime had been committed.

The autopsy reportedly suggested Lois had already been dead for approximately fourteen or fifteen hours before the ambulance was called. Whatever else happened inside that house, one fact is difficult to escape. A woman suffered an obvious medical crisis in front of several people.

Nobody called for help.

MDA, PCP and a Case File That Doesn’t Quite Fit

There is another problem. What exactly did Lois take? According to one contemporary account, Lois had told friends the capsule contained MDA — 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine — a psychoactive drug that acquired a reputation within sections of the counterculture as a “love drug”.

The surviving archival catalogue information for the coroner’s material also apparently lists the cause as MDA, although the full coroner’s report was not available for examination during my research.

Some descriptions circulating immediately after her death instead referred to the substance as a “peace pill” associated with an animal tranquilliser — language historically associated with PCP. The behaviour described by witnesses also raises questions: extreme agitation, reduced response to injury, violent movements, followed by convulsions and collapse. But this is where the dossier has to remain open. Without the complete toxicology and coroner’s report, we cannot simply declare that Lois took PCP rather than MDA.

Then Esalen Told the Story

Years later, Lois’s death appeared in a history of the Esalen Institute. The basic outline remained. The atmosphere did not. In that account, Lois had heard about MDA and eventually obtained enough for herself and several friends. After taking it, she became agitated. Then, according to the Esalen history, she became quiet. She went into another room and lay down.

Her companions checked on her and found her breathing deeply, apparently in a trance. They left her alone. When they returned later, she was dead.

Compare that with the contemporary newspaper dossier. The woman throwing herself against walls has disappeared, as has the damaged scalp. The convulsions have disappeared, and no mention of the blanket in the corner. The fourteen or fifteen hours before anyone summoned help have also disappeared.

What remains is almost serene: a psychedelic experiment followed by a mysterious death. Not exactly a deliberate cover-up. But it does demonstrate something subtler and perhaps more common.

Memory has edited the crime scene.

Institutional Betrayal

The Esalen account acknowledges the problem. Some people blamed the institute for Lois’s death. Esalen’s connections with figures from psychedelic culture made the association uncomfortable, and Michael Murphy reportedly stressed that when Lois had previously asked an Esalen office manager for help obtaining MDA, he had refused.

The institutional defence was straightforward. Lois was an adult. Nobody could stop her from finding drugs. Esalen had not supplied them. Those points may all be true. The available evidence does not establish that Esalen provided the substance that killed Lois, and it would be irresponsible to pretend otherwise. But institutional betrayal does not always require someone to secretly hand over a capsule. Sometimes it happens afterwards. It happens when the institution survives, and the dead person becomes inconvenient.

The history records that Esalen’s people felt the need to defend themselves against accusations of “catastrophic fatal irresponsibility”. And gradually the story became safer. Lois became another bright young seeker who ventured too far into inner space. The horrifying circumstances of her actual death faded into the archive.

Her Estranged Husband Remembered Something Else

Then there is Pierre Delattre.

Pierre and Lois were separated by the time she died. Their marriage had broken down years earlier, and Pierre had left San Francisco; The Upstart Spring: Esalen and the American Awakening dates their separation to 1963. By the end of 1967, Pierre was living a very different life and was involved with another woman, Carol. But Pierre was not simply the estranged husband who later wrote about Lois’s death. He was a significant figure in the same cultural landscape.

Described by Time and Newsweek as San Francisco’s “beatnik priest”, the ordained Presbyterian minister had run a non-denominational coffeehouse ministry on upper Grant Avenue in North Beach during the Beat era.

His later memoir, Episodes, places him among an extraordinary cast of characters. He knew figures from San Francisco’s literary and countercultural circles, including Allen Ginsberg and Richard Brautigan. He eventually abandoned the ministry altogether, later moving to Mexico and establishing himself as an artist. This matters because the people surrounding Lois were not isolated experimenters who happened to stumble into the psychedelic culture; they were embedded in it.

Pierre’s later memoir makes clear that the separation from Lois had not been painless. At one point, recalling an earlier episode in his own life, he wrote that they had argued over custody of their children and that Lois told him the dispute was so painful it would be better if one of them were dead. Two years later, reflecting on Lois’s death, he wrote that it was she who had “tempted death and was taken”.

Shortly before Lois died, Pierre returned from Mexico with Carol and went alone to visit Lois and their children on Christmas morning. In person, he remembered Lois appearing unusually radiant and healthy. Then he watched a Polaroid photograph of her develop. Suddenly, he claimed, the photograph revealed something he had been unable to see while looking directly at her: profound despair. He interpreted her expression retrospectively as that of somebody who had given up on life. He left the apartment, returned to Carol at their hotel and decided they should take the next bus back to Mexico. Nineteen days later, Lois was dead.

There is an obvious problem with retrospective prophecy. Once we know somebody is dead, the past rearranges itself. A photograph becomes an omen; a conversation becomes a warning. Ordinary sadness becomes foreshadowing. Memory turns itself into literature. And it makes Pierre Delattre considerably more interesting than the footnote he has become.

The Erased Woman

This is where Lois Dodd Delattre fits into one of the recurring patterns in the mythology of the 1960s. The men become thinkers. The institutions become movements. The drugs become consciousness.

The dead woman becomes symbolism.

Lois helped connect people who would become important figures in the Human Potential Movement. She worked inside Esalen’s expanding intellectual network. Contemporary material shows her discussing people who had achieved conventional success only to discover that possessions and status were not enough.

Yet search for her now, and she is remarkably difficult to find. I was not able to find a single photograph of her for this article, or my original livestream about her. Even her name is obscured by another, much better-known Lois Dodd — the American painter.

Her own history survives largely in fragments. A grave. A few newspaper reports. An institutional history. Her husband’s memories. A coroner’s file that remains tantalisingly out of reach. This is how somebody becomes erased without anybody having to erase them deliberately. Everyone else gets to explain what her death meant. Lois does not.

Who Controls the Narrative?

That question matters far beyond this obscure 1968 death.

Usually, it is whoever survives long enough to write the memoir. Institutions preserve their histories. Famous men acquire biographers. Countercultures manufacture their own mythology. The dead leave paperwork, and paperwork is rarely as seductive as mythology. This is particularly important when examining subjects like the Manson Family, Hollywood, LSD and the wider 1960s counterculture. We have inherited a remarkably polished version of that decade: psychedelic liberation, beautiful young people, sexual freedom, experimental psychology and consciousness expansion.

The archive is considerably uglier.

There were overdoses, psychiatric collapses, exploitation, contaminated drugs, violence and people who simply disappeared from the story. Lois Delattre belongs to that other 1960s, the one underneath the poster.

One Month Later

And then the case file opens another door.

Only weeks after Lois died, Neal Cassady — Beat icon, inspiration for On the Road and driver of the Merry Pranksters’ psychedelic bus — died beside railway tracks in Mexico. Pierre Delattre knew him. A later account even claimed that police found Delattre’s address among Cassady’s possessions when he died- another reminder of how small this world actually was. The Beat movement, Esalen, the psychedelic underground, LSD culture and the emerging counterculture did not exist as separate historical boxes. The same names keep appearing. The same houses, the same drugs, the same experiments. And occasionally, the same strange silences.

Lois Dodd Delattre died in January 1968.

The newspaper archive tells us something terrible happened inside that house. The later mythology tells us she was exploring inner space. Somewhere between those two versions is a woman whose own account can never be recovered. Perhaps the most revealing question isn’t what Lois was searching for when she took that capsule. It is why, when she began convulsing in front of witnesses, nobody called an ambulance.

And why that detail became so much easier to forget.

When most people think of the Summer of Love, they picture flowers, music and peace. It has become one of the defining images of the 1960s—a generation rejecting war, embracing new ideas and believing a different world was possible.

Over the past few weeks, however, I’ve been working through contemporary books, newspapers, medical reports and memoirs written while these events were actually unfolding. Sources such as Love Needs Care, Emmett Grogan’s Ringolevio, contemporary newspaper reports and archival interviews paint a far more complicated picture than the nostalgic image we’ve inherited.

What I discovered wasn’t simply the rise of the counterculture. It was the rapid collapse of a neighbourhood struggling to cope with an unprecedented public health emergency. More surprisingly, it has also changed the way I think about Charles Manson’s place within that world.

While LSD has become the drug most closely associated with the Summer of Love, many of the doctors, outreach workers and volunteers on the ground believed amphetamines were causing the more immediate crisis. Alongside the famous stories of psychedelic exploration were outbreaks of hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections, homelessness, exploitation, untreated mental illness and increasing violence. The Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic wasn’t opened because San Francisco wanted to celebrate the counterculture. It was opened because thousands of vulnerable young people were arriving in a neighbourhood that simply wasn’t equipped to care for them.

Understanding this forgotten public health crisis doesn’t excuse what happened later. But it does provide essential context—not only for the collapse of Haight-Ashbury, but also for understanding why someone like Charles Manson was able to operate within that world without appearing as exceptional as we often imagine.

The Summer of Love Didn’t Appear Overnight

One of the first things that surprised me was discovering that Haight-Ashbury didn’t suddenly become the centre of the counterculture in 1967. After the Second World War, many of the district’s large Victorian homes were divided into inexpensive apartments as wealthier families moved to the suburbs. Cheap rents attracted students, artists and musicians throughout the late 1950s, while San Francisco’s Beat Generation had already established the city as a centre of alternative culture.

The Human Be-In and the Arrival of Thousands

One of the biggest turning points came on 14 January 1967 with the Human Be-In in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The event itself attracted thousands of people, bringing together many of the leading figures of the emerging counterculture, including Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsberg and other advocates of psychedelic drugs.

The gathering received extensive national media coverage. Newspapers, magazines and television reports presented San Francisco as the centre of a new cultural revolution. Images of flower children, psychedelic music and communal living were broadcast across America, creating the impression that the Haight offered an alternative society where young people could escape the conventions of mainstream life. The media attention had consequences that few people seem to have anticipated.

Over the following months, tens of thousands of young people travelled to San Francisco. Many arrived with little money, nowhere to live and no clear plan beyond becoming part of the movement they had seen celebrated in the national press. The Haight-Ashbury district, a relatively small neighbourhood, suddenly found itself trying to absorb an influx far beyond anything its housing, healthcare and social services had been designed to support. This was the real beginning of the public health crisis.

By the time the Summer of Love officially arrived, local doctors, volunteers and residents were already struggling to cope. The Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic was created because conventional healthcare simply couldn’t meet the demand.

One irony that struck me while reading the contemporary sources is that many of the public figures who helped promote LSD and the counterculture were no longer living in the Haight once the neighbourhood became overwhelmed. The media moved on, many of the movement’s best-known personalities left to pursue other projects, and it was local residents, volunteers and clinic staff who remained to deal with the consequences of overcrowding, infectious disease, addiction and exploitation.

In many ways, the Human Be-In succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations. It inspired thousands of young people to come to San Francisco. What it failed to create was the infrastructure needed to care for them once they arrived.

A Neighbourhood Under Pressure

Another thing that challenged my assumptions was the sheer variety of people living in the Haight. This wasn’t one united hippie community. Contemporary sources describe students, artists, runaways, journalists, doctors, researchers and social workers living alongside drug dealers, underground chemists, Hell’s Angels, other biker gangs and organised criminals. Some had come searching for a different way of life. Others arrived to make money, sell drugs or exploit vulnerable young people.

As I worked through these sources, it became increasingly clear that no single group was responsible for what happened. The neighbourhood was changing from multiple directions at once. Underground chemists such as Owsley Stanley, Tim Scully and later Nick Sand were expanding psychedelic production. New drugs such as STP were appearing on the streets. Amphetamine use was increasing rapidly, bringing with it a level of aggression and paranoia that many clinic staff believed was transforming the atmosphere of the district.

Meanwhile, local doctors, volunteers and community organisations were struggling simply to keep up. The romantic image of the Summer of Love often overlooks the fact that this was also a neighbourhood under immense social, medical and economic pressure.

Ann Jiminez and the End of the Dream

One story in Love Needs Care stopped me in my tracks.

Ann Jiminez was nineteen years old. She had left her home in Washington shortly after Thanksgiving, hoping to find the hippies she had met there. Like thousands of other young people, she travelled to San Francisco searching for the freedom and community that the Summer of Love seemed to promise.

On Christmas Day she wrote to her sister.

“The Haight has changed.”

Those would prove to be among the last words she ever wrote.

According to Love Needs Care, Ann was never really accepted by the group living at 1480 Waller Street. After being accused of stealing a pair of boots, she became the target of a prolonged and sadistic assault. She was beaten, kicked, had her hair clipped, her body shaved and was left to die with obscenities written across her body in lipstick.

The account in Love Needs Care is striking not only because of its brutality, but because of what happened around it. Several people were present during the assault. Police later swept the house and arrested four men for murder, while numerous witnesses described what they had seen. Yet, despite the horrific nature of the attack, nobody was ultimately convicted of Ann’s murder. Contemporary reporting later described a neighbourhood where witnesses stood by as the assault unfolded, and the subsequent trial ended in acquittals.

Reading Ann’s story fundamentally changed the way I viewed the Summer of Love. We often remember 1967 through photographs of flowers, music and idealism. Yet within eighteen months, a young woman could arrive in San Francisco looking for the hippie dream, write home that “the Haight has changed,” and end up tortured and murdered over the accusation that she had stolen a pair of boots.

For me, Ann Jiminez’s death represents the point where the mythology of the Summer of Love collides with the reality described in contemporary sources. It reminds us that beneath the familiar images of peace and love was a neighbourhood struggling with violence, exploitation, addiction and social collapse.

The Hidden Epidemic: A Public Health Crisis

Although LSD has become synonymous with the Summer of Love, reading Love Needs Care left me with a very different impression. Again and again, the doctors return not simply to psychedelic drugs, but to the extraordinary range of illnesses they were trying to treat in a neighbourhood where thousands of vulnerable young people were living in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions.

The clinic’s patients weren’t just suffering from addiction. They were arriving with skin infections, respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal disease, sexually transmitted infections and viral hepatitis, often several at the same time. Poor nutrition, lack of sleep, emotional stress and inadequate hygiene weakened people’s immune systems, making recovery far more difficult.

One of the most common problems was skin disease. Doctors described impetigo spreading rapidly through the Haight, producing painful sores that frequently became infected. Cellulitis, abscesses and infected injection sites were common among intravenous drug users, while cuts and wounds often failed to heal because of poor nutrition and constant exposure to dirt and infection.

Young people were also plagued by parasites. Lice, scabies and pubic lice were described as widespread throughout the district. Overcrowded communal houses, shared bedding and poor washing facilities allowed infestations to spread rapidly, while many patients delayed seeking treatment until the conditions had become severe.

Digestive illnesses were equally common. Clinic staff reported ulcers, chronic diarrhoea, dysentery, food poisoning, intestinal infections and severe dehydration. Many houses lacked even basic sanitation, making it almost impossible to prevent diseases from circulating among large groups of residents.

Sexually transmitted infections reached alarming levels. Gonorrhoea was described as the most common venereal disease seen by the clinic, affecting many of the young people arriving in the Haight. Doctors warned that untreated infections could lead to infertility, chronic pelvic pain, arthritis, eye disease and heart complications. Syphilis, trichomoniasis and other sexually transmitted infections also appeared regularly in clinic records. The scale of the problem reflected not only changing sexual behaviour, but also the fact that thousands of young people were living transient lives with little access to conventional healthcare.

Perhaps most worrying of all was hepatitis. The doctors believed it had become one of the defining illnesses of the Haight during the latter part of 1968. While some cases were linked to contaminated food and poor sanitation, intravenous drug use dramatically accelerated its spread through shared needles. As more young people began injecting amphetamines and heroin, hepatitis reached what the authors described as epidemic proportions. Liver inflammation, jaundice, abdominal pain, fever and prolonged illness became increasingly common, stretching the clinic’s already limited resources.

Running through all of these conditions was the growing problem of amphetamine use. Modern accounts often focus on LSD, but Love Needs Care repeatedly portrays speed as the drug causing the greatest day-to-day damage. Doctors associated chronic amphetamine use with paranoia, emotional instability, aggression, malnutrition, sleep deprivation and psychotic symptoms. Many believed it was transforming not only the health of individual users, but also the atmosphere of the Haight itself.

This was the environment in which Roger Smith was carrying out outreach work. Before he became associated with Charles Manson, he had already spent years interviewing young drug users, working in probation and helping some of the most vulnerable people arriving in San Francisco. Alongside David Smith, Dr. Frederick Meyers and countless volunteers, he was trying to respond to what had become one of the largest youth public health crises America had yet experienced. The Women Everyone Forgot

The ideal of “free love” has often obscured a much darker reality. Contemporary newspapers, court cases and memoirs reveal repeated examples of young women being manipulated, trafficked, sexually exploited and blamed for what happened to them. Many had travelled to California alone, making them especially vulnerable to older men who promised protection, work or a sense of belonging.

As I’ve researched the period, one thing has become increasingly difficult to ignore: Charles Manson was operating within an environment where the exploitation of vulnerable women was already widespread.

That doesn’t make his crimes any less horrific. It does mean they occurred within a culture that often failed to recognise or punish similar patterns of abuse carried out by others.

Why Charles Manson Didn’t Stand Out

This has probably been the biggest shift in my own thinking.

For years, I viewed Manson as someone who stood entirely apart from the rest of the counterculture. The more contemporary material I read, however, the more I realised that many of the behaviours associated with him—manipulating vulnerable young people, living from women’s earnings, controlling relationships and exploiting the chaos of the Haight—were already present long before the Tate-LaBianca murders. What made Manson exceptional wasn’t that he exploited these conditions. It was the scale of the violence that eventually followed.

Understanding the world he entered helps explain how he was able to recruit followers and avoid attracting more attention in the years beforehand.

The Counterculture’s Forgotten Public Health Crisis

The Summer of Love remains one of the most romanticised periods of modern history. Yet contemporary sources suggest we have remembered only part of the story.

Alongside the music, idealism and cultural experimentation was a neighbourhood overwhelmed by addiction, homelessness, infectious disease, exploitation and inadequate public services. Doctors, volunteers and outreach workers were attempting to respond to an emergency that was unfolding faster than anyone could control.

Remembering this history doesn’t diminish the hopes that many young people brought with them to San Francisco. It also reminds us that the rise of Charles Manson cannot be fully understood in isolation. He emerged from a social environment already struggling with profound medical, social and cultural problems—many of which have been overshadowed by the mythology that later grew around the Summer of Love.

Roger Smith Before Charles Manson

Long before Roger Smith encountered the Manson Family, he had already built a career working directly with vulnerable young people.

According to Love Needs Care, his background included:

• street gang work in Chicago;

• administering a drug-abuse programme for Black adolescents in East Oakland;

• serving as a federal probation officer;

• Specialising in criminology and community outreach.

This is important because it places his later contact with the Manson Family into a much broader professional context. Roger Smith wasn’t simply supervising parolees. His career had already been centred on building relationships with people living on the margins of society.

This helps explain why he appeared so close to the Manson Family. He was used to outreach work and, by all accounts, was the most experienced at it among the clinic staff. His conduct would raise ethical questions today—having Manson and the girls visit him at home, and he and his wife reportedly taking care of Mary Brunner’s baby while the women were in jail—but it needs to be understood in context.

This was the very beginning of the free clinic movement, and many of the ethical guidelines we now take for granted simply did not exist yet. There is no clear evidence that Smith had any motive beyond concern for the young women and children involved. At the same time, there is little indication that anyone else was stepping in to provide that kind of support.

The Forgotten Aspects Of The Amphetamine Project

One of the biggest surprises for me was discovering the central role played by Dr. Frederick Meyers, David Smith’s mentor. Today, discussions of the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic usually focus on David Smith and Roger Smith. Yet Love Needs Care shows that Meyers, a Professor of Pharmacology at UCSF, secured the National Institute of Mental Health grant and acted as Principal Investigator for the Amphetamine Research Project.

Despite this central role, Meyers is rarely mentioned in later discussions of the clinic. There appears to have been little effort to interview him about the project, and at some point, he left the clinic. His career, however, continued successfully—he went on to co-author a pharmacology textbook that is still used today.

Roger Smith became the project’s field director.

The person responsible for carrying out much of the work in the community. He interviewed speed users, recruited participants and coordinated the day-to-day field work of the Amphetamine Research Project. According to Love Needs Care, however, the National Institute of Mental Health grant funded research, not the treatment programme that rapidly became necessary as the speed epidemic worsened. Smith therefore found himself trying to build those services separately. He sought additional private funding, recruited volunteers, organised communal housing, arranged detoxification and emergency aid, and even took several young addicts into his own home because there simply weren't enough treatment facilities available.

That isn’t the picture of Roger Smith most people know today.

Lynette Fromme’s Memories

Lynette Fromme provides one of the few personal descriptions of Roger Smith from someone who knew him before the murders.

She describes him as "a decent federal parole officer, both professionally and personally." She also recalls Charlie visiting Roger socially and later thanks Roger and his wife for caring for Mary Brunner's son during the Mendocino arrests. At one point, she reflects that Roger had no reason to suspect what would later happen, suggesting that his interactions with the group were grounded in ordinary professional and social contact rather than any awareness of future violence.

In fairness, Fromme was someone who had extensive experience with the criminal justice system. She spent decades in prison and knew many people who were on parole or had been incarcerated. That background arguably gave her a basis for comparison when judging parole officers, and her positive assessment of Roger Smith may therefore carry some weight.

Interestingly, some viewers have pointed me to an interview by Tom O’Neill in which Roger Smith reportedly denied caring for the baby. I haven’t yet relocated that interview, so I’m reluctant to draw firm conclusions from it. What we can say is that contemporary accounts and later recollections are not entirely consistent, and that discrepancy deserves further investigation.

What is documented, however, is that Roger wrote character reference letters for Mary Brunner and Susan Atkins during their legal difficulties. Given his background in probation and outreach work, writing reports and references for people involved in the criminal justice system was part of his professional role. By itself, that isn’t evidence of anything unusual.

Love Needs Care versus Ringolevio

Perhaps the most interesting part of this research came from reading Love Needs Care alongside Emmett Grogan’s Ringolevio. David and Roger Smith describe a clinic overwhelmed by an unprecedented speed epidemic, struggling to create housing, treatment and emergency services with limited resources.

Grogan tells a very different story.

He argues that many of the new institutions emerging around Haight-Ashbury—including the clinic, the HIP merchants’ association and other community organisations—were becoming part of the problem rather than the solution.

One of his strongest criticisms is directed at the HIP merchants’ employment programme. Grogan claims young runaways were being paid as little as one dollar an hour to make dresses that were then sold to customers for twenty-five to thirty dollars. In his view, businesses were profiting from the image of the counterculture while offering little practical help to the thousands of young people arriving in San Francisco.

He was equally scathing about what he regarded as empty gestures. During one meeting, he mocked proposals to improve relations with police and government officials through community dinners, arguing that the Haight had already “been through that ‘Take a Cop to Dinner’ rubbish before.”

Nor did Timothy Leary escape criticism. Grogan dismissed Leary’s philosophy, saying that the only right people would gain by following it was “the right to go mad—to become a gibbering idiot.”

David Smith also became a target. Grogan accused him of building a career from the drug crisis while researchers gathered information and vulnerable young people continued to struggle.

Whether one agrees with Grogan or not, his criticisms remind us that the biggest disagreements over Haight-Ashbury often came from inside the counterculture itself. Love Needs Care and Ringolevio describe many of the same events, but they interpret them through completely different lenses.

Research Continues

This article isn’t intended as the final word on Roger Smith.

Quite the opposite.

Taken together, these sources suggest that Roger Smith’s story sits at the intersection of several competing visions of the 1960s counterculture: clinical outreach and public health, psychedelic evangelism, and radical anti-institutional activism. Understanding his role means recognising those tensions rather than reducing him to a single narrative.

The more I read, the more questions emerge: the NIMH funding, Frederick Meyers’ overlooked role, and Roger Smith’s own later recollections.

I started looking into them, expecting to find stronger evidence for those claims. Instead, I found something far more interesting: the original documents. All the ones referenced are linked in the sources section at the end.

The Problem With “The Smiths”

The deeper I dug, the more I realised that David Smith, Roger Smith and Alan Rose are frequently treated as though they were the same person. In reality, they played very different roles.

David Smith was a medical doctor who was already working in drug abuse treatment when he founded the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic and became one of the most visible figures in addiction treatment in the late 1960s.

Roger Smith was a criminology student and parole officer who worked directly with Charles Manson following his release from prison in 1967. Alan Rose was neither a psychiatrist nor a psychologist.

Yet when I read the famous Manson Family study, it quickly became clear that many of the observations came from Rose, who claimed to have lived with the group and observed their daily lives. It says in Love Needs Care that they lost Rose for a couple of months while he lived with the Manson family in 1968.

This distinction matters because many later discussions give the impression that David Smith personally embedded himself within the Family and studied them directly. The study itself tells a more complicated story.

What The Study Actually Says

The study is also notable for what it says about Manson’s methods of control.

Rose describes Manson as:

“An extroverted, persuasive individual who served as absolute ruler of the group marriage commune.”

He notes that Manson was thirty-five years old, had no college education, and exercised enormous influence over the people around him. According to the study, approval and disapproval flowed through Manson himself. What he sanctioned was accepted by the group; what he rejected was forbidden.

The study also describes how stories about Manson’s sexual abilities were used to reinforce his status:

“Such stories, although not validated, helped him maintain his leadership role.”

This is an important detail because it suggests that Manson’s authority was not based solely on ideology. It was also tied to mythology, reputation and the image he cultivated around himself.

Perhaps the most revealing section concerns his approach to new female members.

“Manson set himself up as the ‘initiator of new females’ into the commune.”

The authors go on to explain that Manson would spend a new arrival’s first day with her, attempting to determine whether she was merely on a “sex trip” or genuinely interested in joining the group. He would talk with and make love to her extensively, finding out, in his words, “where their heads were at.”

The study further states that women who refused certain sexual practices could be expelled from the group.

Reading this section today, it is difficult not to see elements of grooming and coercive control. Manson is described as controlling access to the group, controlling sexual expectations and personally assessing the willingness of new recruits to conform. The language is that of a late-1960s commune study, but many of the behaviours being described are recognisable today.

The authors even suggest that Manson’s beliefs had become detached from reality, writing that:

“Charlie could probably be diagnosed as an ambulatory schizophrenic.”

Whether that observation came from Alan Rose, David Smith or both remains unclear. What is clear is that concerns about Manson’s mental state were being expressed years before his later psychiatric evaluations.

Did Manson Need A Handler?

One thing I kept asking myself while reading the study was whether any of this behaviour required a hidden intelligence operation to explain it.

What I found was a man with a long history of manipulation, trafficking-related offences and exploitation. Long before Haight-Ashbury, Manson had spent years learning how to control and use other people.

The techniques described in the study do not look unique. They look familiar.

The counterculture gave Manson a new setting and a new vocabulary. Instead of presenting himself as a traditional pimp, he could present himself as a guru. Instead of using religion alone, he could incorporate LSD and the language of enlightenment. But the underlying behaviour remained recognisable. By modern standards, many aspects of this research would raise serious ethical concerns. Researchers today would be expected to anonymise subjects far more carefully, particularly in a case attracting worldwide attention.

Ironically, I found the ethical questions far more startling than the conspiracy theories.

David Smith Before The Murders

One document completely changed the way I viewed David Smith and Alan Rose. In 1967 they co-authored a paper titled LSD: Its Use, Abuse and Suggested Treatment.

Reading it today, it does not sound like the work of people attempting to brainwash LSD users. It reads like practical harm-reduction advice written by people dealing with a rapidly growing drug crisis.

The paper discusses bad trips, psychotic reactions, contaminated street drugs and methods for helping people through difficult experiences. The emphasis is on treatment, support and understanding.

Whatever criticisms can be made of later work, this article reads much more like addiction medicine than mind control.

A Change In Perspective

What makes David Smith interesting is that his views appear to evolve. In the Family study, LSD is present but is not described as a major motivational force behind the group’s behaviour.

In a later article on LSD, violence and radical religious belief, Smith takes a different approach. He explicitly links the Manson case to concerns about psychedelic drugs facilitating blind obedience and extreme belief systems.

Whether this represents a genuine change of mind, hindsight after the murders or a new interpretation of earlier events is difficult to say. But it is a noticeable shift.

Final Thoughts

The biggest lesson I took away from this research is a simple one: read the original documents. The story I found was not the one I expected. Instead of finding clear evidence for the claims surrounding David Smith and Roger Smith, I found disagreements, ethical questions, changing interpretations and a largely forgotten observer named Alan Rose whose role deserves far more attention than it usually receives.

Since finishing this article, I have started working through Love Needs Care, David Smith’s own account of the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic. I’ve already come across several new details that deserve a closer look and shed further light on the clinic and its researchers.

Just as Charles Watson’s diagnosis evolved over time, Manson’s psychological history reveals a series of changing interpretations shaped by different tests, different diagnostic standards and different schools of psychological thought.

The disagreement reveals as much about the evolution of forensic psychology as it does about Manson himself.

The 1976 Diagnosis

The earliest detailed psychological summary available to us comes from 1976.

According to Manson’s prison records, a psychologist administered a battery of tests that included the Rorschach Inkblot Test, the House-Tree-Person Test and the Graham-Kendall Memory for Designs Test. The raw test data has not survived, but the summary is revealing.

The psychologist reported that Manson functioned intellectually in the above-average range. However, he also described him as rambling and overproductive in his Rorschach responses. His free associations to the inkblots and his perceptual organisation were considered diagnostic of schizophrenia. As a result, Manson was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. However, there is an important qualification that is often overlooked. The diagnosis was described as being in partial and fluctuating remission.

In other words, the psychologist was not claiming that Manson was actively psychotic at the time of testing. Rather, he believed Manson suffered from schizophrenia but was not displaying its full symptoms during the evaluation.

This distinction would become important later.

LSD, Psychosis and the Era of Diagnosis

To understand these early diagnoses, it helps to remember the psychiatric climate of the time. During the 1950s and 1960s, many psychiatrists described LSD as a psychotomimetic drug. The word literally means “psychosis mimicking.”

Researchers believed LSD could temporarily reproduce some features associated with schizophrenia, including:

• Loose associations

• Unusual symbolic thinking

• Altered perceptions

• Distorted sense of meaning

• Difficulty separating internal thoughts from external reality

Modern psychiatry has largely moved away from the idea that LSD simply produces artificial schizophrenia. Nevertheless, the theory was highly influential during the years when many of Manson’s (and Watson’s) psychiatric labels were first being formed.

The idea that LSD could mimic psychosis was not a fringe theory. It was one of the dominant ways psychiatrists initially understood the drug.

Among the researchers exploring LSD as a possible model of schizophrenia were:

• Humphry Osmond, the British psychiatrist who later coined the term “psychedelic.”

• Abram Hoffer, a Canadian psychiatrist who worked closely with Osmond and investigated the biochemical basis of schizophrenia.

• Ronald Sandison, a British psychiatrist who pioneered LSD-assisted psychotherapy in the United Kingdom.

• Werner Stoll, one of the earliest psychiatrists to publish clinical studies of LSD in psychiatric settings.

During the 1950s, many researchers believed LSD produced a temporary “model psychosis” that could help psychiatrists understand schizophrenia from the inside. This approach became known as the psychotomimetic model.

Over time, however, researchers such as Osmond began to move away from the psychotomimetic interpretation. They observed that LSD experiences often differed significantly from schizophrenia and increasingly emphasised the importance of personality, expectation and environment—what later became known as “set and setting.”

The result is an interesting historical irony. Some of the same researchers who initially promoted LSD as a model of psychosis later helped popularise the idea that psychedelic experiences could be therapeutic, insightful and even spiritually meaningful. This matters because Manson spent years immersed in psychedelic culture. Prison records associated with his transfer to Pelican Bay also noted suspected LSD and cannabis use as late as 1997.

That does not mean LSD entirely caused his behaviour.

It does, however, raise an interesting question.

When psychologists encountered Manson’s unusual speech patterns, were they observing a thought disorder, or were they observing a man shaped by years of psychedelic culture, institutionalisation and deliberate performance?

The 1997 Pelican Bay Evaluation

More than twenty years later, forensic psychologist Dr. Tod Roy conducted an extensive evaluation of Manson at Pelican Bay State Prison. Roy did not diagnose schizophrenia directly.

Instead, he concluded that Manson showed evidence of:

• Psychotic Disorder NOS

• Antisocial Personality Disorder

• Significant psychopathic traits

Manson also produced elevations on measures associated with schizophrenia-spectrum thinking and hypervigilance. The hypervigilance finding is particularly interesting. Hypervigilance refers to a state of constant alertness. Individuals who are hypervigilant continually scan their environment for threats, watch other people’s reactions and remain prepared for danger. Such behaviour can occur in psychotic disorders, but it is also common among trauma survivors, violent offenders and long-term prisoners.

By 1997, Manson had spent most of his life inside correctional institutions. Hypervigilance may have been a survival strategy as much as a symptom.

The Thought Disorder Debate

The most controversial aspect of the evaluation concerns thought disorder.

Thought disorder is generally considered a positive symptom of schizophrenia. It refers to disruptions in the organisation of thought itself, often reflected in speech.

Examples include:

• Loose associations

• Tangential thinking

• Clang associations

• Disorganised speech

Roy believed Manson showed evidence of thought disorder.

The 2022 reassessment disagreed.

The later authors argued that although Manson’s speech was unusual, it generally retained an underlying purpose and direction. In their view, his behaviour was more organised and strategic than Roy’s interpretation suggested. This distinction may sound technical, but it lies at the heart of the debate. The question is not whether Manson sounded strange. The question is whether his strangeness reflected psychosis.

The 2022 Reassessment

In 2022, psychologists Roy M. Mihura, Gregory J. Meyer, Donald R. Friedman and J. Reid Meloy revisited Manson’s Rorschach protocol using modern scoring methods.

They reached a different conclusion. The authors accepted that Manson was manipulative, psychopathic, paranoid and psychologically disturbed. However, they argued that the evidence did not support a psychotic disorder.

In other words, they agreed that something was wrong with Manson. They simply disagreed about what that something was.

What Dr. Roy Said In 2026

A recent 2026 interview with Dr. Roy adds another layer to the story.

Interestingly, Roy’s description of Manson does not sound like the stereotype many people expect. He described Manson as cooperative, conversational and often surprisingly normal during their interactions. He also suggested that Manson learned early in life that acting “crazy” could serve a purpose. According to Roy, bizarre behaviour sometimes functioned as a survival strategy and a way of controlling situations.

Roy also revealed something else that deserves attention. Manson had apparently taken the Rorschach before. That matters because the test was designed to measure spontaneous responses to unfamiliar images. A subject who already knows the procedure may approach it differently.

This becomes especially relevant when examining responses that repeatedly rely on shocking language, sexual imagery and attempts to provoke a reaction.

Not a Criminal Mastermind

One finding that rarely appears in documentaries concerns Manson’s cognitive testing. Roy reported IQ scores ranging from approximately 97 to 103, depending on the test used, placing him within the average range.

His reading ability was estimated at around a third-grade level.

These findings do not support the popular image of Manson as a criminal genius. His influence appears to have stemmed less from extraordinary intelligence than from charisma, manipulation, opportunism and an ability to read other people.

A Familiar Pattern

Readers who followed the Charles Watson article may recognise a recurring theme. In both cases, the most interesting question is not whether the psychologists were honest or competent. It is how experienced professionals looking at the same individual can reach different conclusions decades apart.

As diagnostic criteria change, testing methods evolve and new research emerges, old conclusions are often re-examined.

The result is not always a clearer answer.

Sometimes it reveals just how uncertain psychological diagnosis can be.

Conclusion

The most striking thing about Charles Manson’s psychological history is not what psychologists agreed on. It is what they disagreed on. In 1976, prison psychologists diagnosed paranoid schizophrenia in partial remission.

In 1997, Dr. Roy concluded that Manson showed evidence of Psychotic Disorder NOS alongside psychopathy and antisocial personality traits.

In 2022, a team of psychologists re-examined the same material and argued that the evidence did not support a psychotic disorder at all.

What remained consistent across all of these interpretations was the picture of a deeply damaged, manipulative and institutionalised individual shaped by abandonment, prison culture, notoriety and decades spent on society’s margins.

More than fifty years after the murders, the debate continues. And perhaps that is the most revealing conclusion of all.

For years, people have treated the timeline of the Tate murders as a settled fact. The killers arrived. The murders happened quickly. Everyone left. End of story.

That is essentially the version cemented into public memory by Helter Skelter, television documentaries, and decades of repetition. But the deeper you dig into the original witness statements, newspaper reports, police documents, and forensic evidence, the harder that neat timeline becomes to maintain. Because, according to multiple independent witnesses, people were still hearing:

• screaming,

• gunshots,

• arguments,

• barking dogs,

• and human activity

around Cielo Drive for hours after the murders were supposedly over. And once you lay those reports side by side, an uncomfortable question emerges:

What exactly was still happening up there at 4:00 in the morning?

The Official Timeline

The prosecution narrative relied heavily on Susan Atkins’s grand jury testimony and later statements from Tex Watson and Linda Kasabian. According to that version of events:

• The killers arrived shortly after midnight,

• Steven Parent was killed near the gate,

• The occupants inside the main house were attacked,

• Frykowski and Folger fled outside,

• and the killers departed soon afterwards.

The sequence was presented as chaotic but relatively brief. I’ve discussed how unreliable this testimony appears here:

Over the years, I’ve read through large sections of the Tate–LaBianca trial transcripts, including Susan Atkins’ testimony in full. One of the key timings later relied upon by the prosecution came from Rudolph Weber, who lived several streets away from Cielo Drive on Portola Drive. Weber stated that around 1:00 a.m., he encountered four young people near his property while hearing running water — the implication being that the killers had already left the scene by then and were washing themselves off nearby.

For decades, that timing has largely been treated as settled. But if the killers were already gone by 1:00 a.m., then a serious problem immediately emerges: Who was still making all the noise being reported from around Cielo Drive afterwards?

Because, according to multiple independent witnesses, the disturbances did not stop at 1:00 a.m.

In some cases, they appear to continue for hours.

The Tim Ireland Scream Report

Between approximately 1:00 and 1:30 a.m., Tim Ireland — a counsellor supervising children sleeping outdoors at the nearby Westlake School for Girls — reported hearing a man scream:

“Oh God, no, stop, stop…”

The screaming reportedly lasted around ten seconds. Ireland became disturbed enough to personally investigate the surrounding roads by car.

Most importantly, the investigating officer specifically described Ireland as:

“a competent person alert and in full command of his faculties.”

That detail matters. This was not written off by investigators as drunken confusion or imagination. It was treated as a credible report.

And again, it creates a serious problem for the accepted timeline.

If the murders were already over and the killers long gone, why were screams still echoing through the canyon between 1:00 and 1:30 a.m.?

Gunshots After Midnight

Another nearby witness, Seymour Kott, reported hearing four gunshots between approximately 12:30 and 1:00 a.m. from near the Polanski residence.

The Kotts lived extremely close to the property.

Importantly:

• This report was independent of Ireland’s,

• and focused on gunfire rather than screams.

Together, the reports suggest activity was still occurring near the house well after the prosecution later implied the killers had already departed.

The 2:00 A.M. Neighbour Report

One of the most overlooked contemporary newspaper reports came from an anonymous neighbour living close enough to overhear ordinary conversations from the Tate property.

According to the article, the witness heard:

• gunshots,

• a woman screaming,

• and later vehicles driving down the road

at approximately 2:00–2:30 a.m.

The neighbour stated:

“At first I thought I was dreaming…”

before realising the sounds were real and connected to the house nearby.

Most strikingly, the article explicitly stated that the murders occurred:

“at 2 or 2:30 — no earlier.”

That directly conflicts with the compressed Helter Skelter timeline, which places the killers already leaving the area much earlier. The neighbour also remarked that had he looked out the window, he might have seen the killers cutting the telephone wires outside the property. That detail is important because it places the witness extremely close to the scene.

The Timeline Gets Worse the More You Read

The deeper you go into the reports, the stranger the night becomes, because the disturbances do not stop after midnight.

They keep going.

Around 2:00–3:00 a.m., hunting dogs owned by nearby resident Emett Steel reportedly became highly agitated in a manner normally associated with gunfire.

Then, around 4:11 a.m., security patrolman Bullington reported hearing three more shots fired from the canyon area. At almost the exact same time, another patrolman referenced a “woman screaming” call already coming from the area.

And then there’s Carlos Gil.

Gil later stated that around 4:00 a.m. he heard several people arguing loudly enough to frighten him into shutting his window and going back to bed.

None of these reports individually proves exactly what happened. But together, they create a timeline that appears far more prolonged and chaotic than the later courtroom narrative suggested. Because once you start laying these reports side by side, the same question keeps returning:

What was still happening up there at 4:00 a.m.?

Rudolph Weber and the 1:00 A.M. Problem

Once the other sound reports are placed side by side, Rudolph Weber’s account becomes much harder to ignore.

Weber stated that around 1:00 a.m. he heard running water outside his home and went downstairs, believing there might be a plumbing problem. Instead, he encountered four young people standing near his hose in his garden. Importantly, Weber did not describe the encounter as frightening or dramatic at the time. He initially assumed they were simply teenagers wandering the canyon late at night.

According to Weber, the only one who spoke was the tall male later identified as Tex Watson. When Weber confronted them and asked what they were doing, Watson allegedly responded calmly:

“Hi. We’re just getting a drink of water…sorry we disturbed you.”

Weber also questioned them about a nearby parked car, which Watson denied belonged to them.

That detail matters because the prosecution later treated Weber’s encounter as one of the key timeline anchors in the case — effectively placing the killers away from Cielo Drive by around 1:00 a.m.

But there’s a major problem with that.

If Weber’s timing is even roughly correct, then who was still producing the screams, gunshots, arguments, barking dogs, and disturbance reports continuing around the canyon afterwards?

On its own, Weber’s estimate could probably be dismissed as faulty memory. The problem is that multiple independent reports start lining up with it in strange ways.

There is also another complication surrounding Weber’s testimony.

Vincent Bugliosi later acknowledged in Helter Skelter that he spoke to Weber before police formally interviewed him. That does not prove Weber was coached or manipulated. But it does raise legitimate questions about how much Weber’s later recollections may already have been influenced by conversations surrounding the developing investigation.

Critics of the official narrative have long pointed out that Bugliosi could theoretically have reinforced aspects of Weber’s timeline or details such as the license plate information later associated with the investigation.

There is no definitive proof of what occurred.

But given how important precise timing became to the prosecution’s reconstruction, the fact that Weber was contacted before formal police questioning remains noteworthy.

The Garretson Problem

William Garretson remained in the guest house throughout the murders.

According to investigators themselves, it was considered:

“highly unlikely”

that Garretson failed to hear the screams, gunshots, and disturbances occurring nearby. That becomes even more significant when combined with the numerous independent reports of noise and activity continuing through the night. If surrounding neighbours could hear the violence echoing through the canyon, the acoustical questions surrounding Garretson become difficult to ignore.

Blood Evidence and Movement Contradictions

The forensic evidence also paints a more complicated picture than the simplified courtroom narrative many people are familiar with. The official story often reduces the movements of Abigail Folger and Wojciech Frykowski into one generalised “escape” sequence.

But the blood evidence suggests separate movement patterns.

Folger’s B-type blood trail moved:

• through the interior hallway,

• toward the master bedroom,

• through the shutters,

• down the rear steps,

• and onto the east lawn.

Frykowski’s movement pattern, meanwhile, was primarily exterior, involving collapse points across the lawn and front walkway area. Those movements should not be merged into one single trail.

The SID blood report also identified O-type blood on the pistol grip designated G-2, despite Frykowski being B-type.

That does not prove another assailant.

But it does complicate the simplified attack sequence later repeated publicly.

There are also unresolved questions surrounding the distribution of blood near the porch and damaged shrubbery area versus the later body positions found inside the house. In Jay Sebring’s case especially, the amount of blood outside compared to his final position inside has long led some researchers to suspect movement after the initial attack.

I’m not presenting that as proven fact.

But visually and forensically, the scene appears far messier than the streamlined Helter Skelter version suggests. I have also covered the blood evidence from the Tate murders in more detail in other articles:

Was This Originally Meant to Be a Drug Rip-Off?

One possibility I increasingly think deserves more attention is that the attack may originally have been intended as some kind of distraction robbery or drug theft.

In other words:

• some members distract the occupants,

• someone searches the house for drugs or money,

• and then the situation spirals violently out of control.

That theory actually explains a lot more than the simplistic idea that everyone arrived intending to immediately kill every person in the house.

It explains:

• the prolonged disturbances,

• the movement around the property,

• why some victims may initially have survived longer,

• and why later staging or cleanup may have occurred afterward.

Because once things escalated, everyone present became a witness.

Did Charles Manson Return to the Scene?

This is the part people often react emotionally to.

The idea that Charles Manson returned to Cielo Drive afterwards is usually treated like some ridiculous conspiracy theory. Except Manson himself repeatedly implied that he did exactly that.

According to The Family, published in 1971, Manson allegedly stated:

“I went back to see what my children did.”

Later, he denied it.

Years afterwards, he again discussed returning to the property in Manson in His Own Words, describing:

• checking the scene,

• inspecting the aftermath,

• and leaving again before dawn.

According to The Manson File and later discussions surrounding Schreck’s research, Manson again said he did go to the crime scene, but remained evasive about crucial details:

• who accompanied him,

• what exactly he encountered there,

• and who else may already have been present at the scene.

None of these statements can be treated as perfectly reliable confessions. Manson contradicted himself constantly.

But the fact that versions of the same story kept appearing across multiple interviews and authors makes the subject difficult to dismiss outright — especially when viewed alongside:

• the prolonged sound reports,

• the unstable timeline,

• and the possibility that activity around the property continued long after the initial attack.

The Cass Elliot Story

One of the strangest stories surrounding the aftermath came from Jimmy Webb, who claimed that Cass Elliot told him she went up to Cielo Drive after the murders and saw what she believed was Abigail Folger lying on the lawn beside the word “Pig” written on the door.

That detail appears to have developed later through rumour and retellings rather than from Webb’s direct account itself.

Still, the broader story is interesting because it suggests people connected to the Laurel Canyon scene may have been moving through the area before police formally secured the property.

Why the Timeline Matters

The issue is not whether every witness report was perfectly accurate. Witness memory is imperfect. Sound behaves unpredictably in canyon terrain. Some reports may be mistaken.

But the larger problem remains:

Why do so many independent reports point toward ongoing activity hours after the murders supposedly ended? The official Helter Skelter narrative depends on the murders occurring as a relatively fast, contained sequence.

The witness reports suggest something far messier:

• staggered violence,

• prolonged activity,

• possible returns to the property,

• and perhaps even attempts at damage limitation before police arrival.

Conclusion

I’m not claiming this article “solves” the Tate murders.

But I do think there is far more uncertainty surrounding the timeline than many people are willing to admit. The witness reports alone make the accepted sequence of events difficult to fully accept without question.

By the time you combine:

• the prolonged screaming,

• the later gunshots,

• The arguments heard around 4:00 a.m.,

• the forensic inconsistencies,

• The reports of activity continuing through the canyon,

• and Manson’s own repeated statements about returning to the property,

The idea that Cielo Drive instantly became a silent, frozen crime scene starts looking increasingly unrealistic.

None of this conclusively proves Manson returned.

But dismissing the possibility outright now requires ignoring a substantial amount of contradictory evidence. And more than fifty years later, one question still hangs over the case:

What exactly was still happening at Cielo Drive long after the murders were supposedly over?

This time I wanted to focus on another major theme that keeps appearing around the edges of the Manson case: the occult revival of the 1960s.

The Return of Victorian Occultism

Not in the simplistic “secret satanic masterminds” sense that later conspiracy culture turned it into, but in the genuine historical sense. The late 1960s really did see a revival of older Victorian and Edwardian esoteric ideas.

Aleister Crowley, Helena Blavatsky, ceremonial magic, tarot, mysticism and alternative spirituality all re-entered youth culture through psychedelic experimentation, underground bookshops, avant-garde cinema and the exploding underground press.

This was not some tiny hidden fringe either.

Timothy Leary openly compared himself to Crowley, famously declaring:

“I’m carrying on the work Aleister Crowley started a century ago.”

Even the slogans carried echoes of the same spirit.

Crowley declared:

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.”

Leary reframed liberation for the psychedelic age with:

“Turn on, tune in, drop out.”

The two philosophies were not identical, but both emerged from a growing rejection of traditional structures, authority and moral restraint.

Kenneth Anger & the Counterculture Underground

At the same time, figures like Kenneth Anger became enormously influential within underground art and music culture.

Anger openly worshipped Crowley and filled his films with ritual imagery, occult symbolism and apocalyptic aesthetics. By the late 1960s and early 1970s he was moving through the same cultural circles as members of The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin.

Mick Jagger composed the soundtrack for Invocation of My Demon Brother, while Jimmy Page later became deeply involved with Crowley’s legacy himself, collecting Crowley artefacts and purchasing Boleskine House. Page also knew Kenneth Anger and helped make and appeared in Lucifer Rising himself.

Unlike many of the later conspiracy theories surrounding the Manson case, these connections are completely real and extensively documented.

Bobby Beausoleil, Susan Atkins & the Black House

One of the most interesting parts of my interview with Nikolas Schreck involved his recollections of what Zeena Schreck told him about Kenneth Anger and Bobby Beausoleil.

According to Schreck, Zeena remembered Anger constantly talking about Bobby Beausoleil during the late 1960s, describing him as being:

“Like a giggling schoolgirl”

because he was so infatuated with him at the time.

Beausoleil would later appear in Anger’s film Invocation of My Demon Brother, and compose and record the music for Lucifer Rising from prison.

Schreck also recalled Zeena remembering Susan Atkins visiting the Black House during the late 1960s under the name “Sharon King,” while performing in Anton LaVey’s “Topless Witches Review.”

According to Schreck, however, neither Beausoleil nor Atkins was a serious follower of Crowley or a committed member of the Church of Satan. They were simply moving through overlapping underground social circles that mixed music, drugs, performance art, sexuality and occult imagery.

And inevitably, after the Tate-LaBianca murders, people began trying to connect all of these worlds together.

Shock Culture & the Underground Press

One thing that often gets lost when people look back at the Process Church is just how deliberately provocative the entire underground press culture of the late 1960s had become.

By this point, shock itself was part of the counterculture aesthetic.

Underground magazines competed to appear more transgressive, more confrontational and more taboo-breaking than the mainstream press. Explicit sexuality, blasphemy, occult imagery, political extremism and deliberate outrage all became part of the visual language of the era.

Publications like Oz, The Realist and Ed Sanders’ Fuck You: A Magazine of the Arts routinely pushed boundaries in ways that would still shock many people today.

The Process Church magazines absolutely participated in this atmosphere. Their imagery was confrontational, apocalyptic and intentionally unsettling. But placed back into the context of the late 1960s underground press, they no longer appear uniquely sinister in the way later conspiracy culture often portrays them.

In many ways, the Process Church were using the same strategy as much of the alternative press at the time:

shock people,
confuse people,
break taboos,
and attract attention.

Nikolas Schreck himself argued that the Process magazines were carefully designed to lure young people in through style and presentation rather than through any coherent occult philosophy:

“The magazine was meant to draw young people in and make it look like a slick, well-organized group… but it wasn’t. It was a chaotic, shambolic mess really.”

That point is important because much of the mythology surrounding the Process Church emerged from people interpreting provocative imagery literally, while ignoring the wider culture of theatrical transgression that existed throughout the underground scene of the late 1960s.

“A Bunch of Horseshit”: What Manson Told Nikolas Schreck About the Process Church

The Process Church became one of the biggest targets of suspicion after the Tate-LaBianca murders.

Ed Sanders linked them to the Manson case in early editions of The Family. The media pushed ritual murder narratives almost immediately after the killings. The FBI opened files on the group. Decades later, conspiracy theories still present the Process Church as a hidden network manipulating serial killers from the shadows.

But after digging through the FBI material, Process publications, underground newspapers and survivor testimony, the reality appears far more complicated — and in many ways more revealing — than the mythology.

The Process Church was founded in London in 1966 by Robert de Grimston and Mary Ann MacLean after splitting from Scientology-related psychotherapy circles. They used provocative imagery, apocalyptic rhetoric and highly stylised underground magazines to attract attention during the height of the counterculture.

The group undoubtedly had coercive and psychologically damaging elements. Survivor testimony describes emotional abuse, domination, manipulation and instability within later offshoots.

But there is still no solid evidence linking the Process Church to the Manson murders. Or that they were really trying to orchestrate an unholy army of serial killers.

When Nikolas Schreck asked Charles Manson directly about supposed Process influence, Manson dismissed the idea completely:

“No, that’s a bunch of horseshit.”

Schreck noted that Manson did know a leather worker associated with the Process Church, but beyond that, he saw no evidence of any meaningful ideological connection.

Schreck also recalled that when Zeena later spoke to Robert de Grimston years after the collapse of the movement, he treated the entire Process period as little more than a youthful phase that no longer meant much to him.

According to Schreck, the mythology surrounding the Process Church was amplified partly through Scientology-linked hostility toward the group after it split from Hubbard’s movement.

“People who believe in this Process Church being an influence on the murders… they are falling for a trick of L. Ron Hubbard and his wife.”

He ultimately described the Process Church not as a hidden death cult, but as:

“A Scientology ripoff and self-help… they stole L. Ron Hubbard’s ideas and organizational principles and dressed them up with trendy occultism.”

What Manson Really Thought About Crowley

One of the most important parts of the interview involved Manson’s actual views on Aleister Crowley.

According to Schreck:

“Charlie was not interested in the whole western occult ceremonial magic tradition whatsoever.”

Schreck said Manson viewed organised occult groups as theatrical and pretentious rather than spiritually meaningful.

“He thought they were pompous and foolish play acting.”

Most importantly, Schreck rejected the idea that Manson’s philosophy showed any serious Thelemic influence at all:

“There’s nothing in his philosophy that shows the slightest influence of Thelema.”

That point matters because the modern mythology surrounding the Manson case often projects far more occult structure onto the Family than actually existed.

According to Schreck, Manson was far more influenced by improvisational mysticism, personality cult dynamics, drugs, music, group psychology and the atmosphere of the late 1960s itself than by ceremonial magic or organised occult traditions.

The Real Danger Wasn’t Ritual Magic

My own conclusion after researching all of this is that if we are going to discuss occult influences on the Manson murders, then we should focus on the more genuine and historically grounded connections: the occult revival of the 1960s itself, the influence of figures like Aleister Crowley and Kenneth Anger on the wider counterculture, and the way ideas about absolute personal freedom spread through psychedelic culture.

That does not mean Crowley “caused” the murders, or that occult groups were secretly directing the Family from the shadows. The evidence for that simply is not there.

And to be clear, I do not think the counterculture was entirely destructive, nor do I think questioning authority was inherently wrong. Many positive things came out of the era. People became less socially repressed, more open-minded, more willing to question institutions, explore psychology, spirituality and sexuality, and challenge deeply entrenched hypocrisies within society. The problem was not openness itself. The problem was that some people interpreted liberation as the complete removal of moral boundaries and personal responsibility.

By the late 1960s, parts of the counterculture had embraced a worldview that increasingly rejected traditional restraints altogether. “Do what thou wilt” became less an obscure Thelemic phrase and more a general cultural attitude: liberation, self-expression, anti-authoritarianism, drugs, sexuality, instinct over structure.

For psychologically stable and empathetic people, that often remained relatively harmless. But once moral boundaries begin collapsing across an entire culture, there will inevitably be people who exploit that freedom in darker ways — particularly individuals with antisocial tendencies, manipulative personalities, narcissism, sadism, or little empathy for others.

And that, to me, is far more relevant to understanding the Manson era than fantasies about hidden satanic masterminds orchestrating murders from the shadows.

The real danger was not ritual magic.

The real danger was a generation experimenting with freedom, psychedelics, charisma and psychological manipulation faster than many people were emotionally equipped to handle — while predators, exploiters and psychologically unstable individuals learned how to thrive inside that environment.

On December 6, 1969, hundreds of thousands gathered at Altamont Speedway in Northern California for what was supposed to be a free Rolling Stones concert — a West Coast answer to Woodstock. Instead, the day became infamous for violence, chaos, the death of Meredith Hunter, and three other accidental deaths. The Grateful Dead were scheduled to play, but backed out after witnessing how dangerous the atmosphere had become.

What makes Altamont so disturbing is not simply that it was badly organised. It was. The venue was changed repeatedly, the stage was dangerously low, facilities were inadequate, and the crowd was enormous. But the deeper horror of Altamont is that it exposed what had already been rotting underneath the mythology of the late 1960s.

The dream of peace and love had become a marketplace. The crowd had become a backdrop. The musicians had become demigods. The film cameras kept rolling. And the people at the front of the stage were no longer being protected — they were being beaten back.

A Free Concert, or a Film Set?

In Everybody’s Lucifer, journalist Tony Scaduto presents Altamont not as a spontaneous gift to the counterculture, but as an event heavily shaped by the Rolling Stones’ need for a dramatic climax to their tour film. The Woodstock documentary was due for release in 1970, and the Stones wanted their own cinematic moment before that cultural territory was taken.

That changes the meaning of Altamont completely.

The concert was publicly framed as a free gathering for the people, but behind the scenes, it increasingly resembled a production deadline. The audience became part concert crowd, part cinematic scenery. Helicopters circled overhead. Cameras moved constantly through the audience. Massive lighting rigs were constructed in a barren California landscape while the crowd steadily grew more exhausted and unstable.

Altamont was not simply a concert anymore. It was becoming an image.

And that is where the event begins to feel strangely modern. The crowd came for music, community, maybe even transcendence. But the machinery surrounding them wanted spectacle.

The Stage Was Too Low — Literally and Symbolically

The last-minute move to Altamont Speedway created major logistical problems. The stage sat only a few feet above the crowd, dangerously low for an audience of hundreds of thousands. There was minimal separation between performers and audience. The site itself was badly suited for a gathering of that scale.

There was little water. Inadequate medical provision. Insufficient toilets. No coherent crowd control system. Yet despite all this, the event still went ahead.

That physical detail — the low stage — almost becomes symbolic in retrospect. The Rolling Stones were not elevated above the crowd in any meaningful way. They were almost inside it, surrounded by mounting aggression and paranoia.

Instead of professional security, the Hells Angels were brought in.

According to Tony Scaduto’s Mick Jagger: Everybody’s Lucifer, the Hell’s Angels had even asked how rough they were expected to be with the crowd. Scaduto claims Stones tour manager Sam Cutler responded: “We don’t give a fuck, just keep those people away.” In practice, that meant a dangerously low stage protected not by professional security, but by intoxicated bikers using fists, boots and pool cues to force people back.

Accounts differ on exactly what they were officially hired to do, but in practice, they became the force standing between the audience and the stage. They were reportedly supplied with large amounts of alcohol, while many were already heavily intoxicated and taking drugs.

And they enforced their authority with violence.

The Counterculture Was Already Fracturing

One of the most important aspects of Altamont is the drug atmosphere surrounding it.

The late 1960s are often remembered through idealised images of psychedelics and communal love, but by the end of the decade something darker had emerged. Amphetamines were everywhere. Bad acid circulated widely. People were exhausted, dehydrated, sleep deprived, emotionally frayed, and packed into unsafe environments.

This was not the optimistic atmosphere of the Summer of Love. It was the psychological burnout that followed it.

Scaduto’s account repeatedly describes the crowd shifting from beauty to unease, then from unease into outright hostility. Dealers wandered openly through the audience selling acid, speed, peyote, wine, beer, and pills. Fights broke out early in the day long before Meredith Hunter was killed. Bad trips spread through the crowd almost contagiously. Medical staff reportedly ran out of Thorazine while trying to treat people experiencing severe psychological distress.

The mythology of the counterculture often portrays these gatherings as peaceful until “outside violence” intrudes. Altamont suggests something more uncomfortable: by late 1969, the movement itself was already beginning to psychologically fragment.

The Hells Angels Were Not Peacekeepers

Violence erupted throughout the day.

Santana performed while fights broke out near the stage. During Jefferson Airplane’s set, Marty Balin was knocked unconscious after attempting to intervene when Hells Angels attacked a member of the crowd. Paul Kantner openly challenged them from the microphone. Grace Slick attempted to calm the audience. The Grateful Dead, after hearing what had happened, refused to perform and left the site entirely. That moment matters because it reveals something crucial: Altamont had already failed before the Rolling Stones even walked on stage.

The musicians knew the atmosphere was deteriorating. The crowd knew it. The Hells Angels knew it. Yet the concert continued anyway. That is one of the darkest aspects of Altamont. The show had to continue because the spectacle mattered more than the danger.

Waiting for Darkness

One of the most disturbing details in Scaduto’s account is the suggestion that the Stones delayed the lights being turned on, even in the medical tent, until after nightfall, because the lighting and theatrical impact would look better on film. By that point, people had already been seriously injured. The crowd was cold, intoxicated, restless, and increasingly aggressive. The medical area was overwhelmed, they actually ran out of Thorazine to treat people on the bad speed and Acid.

But the dramatic entrance still mattered.

That detail captures the entire psychology of Altamont: image before safety.

Mick Jagger’s stage persona — the velvet cape, the satanic imagery surrounding “Sympathy for the Devil,” the theatrical movements — worked perfectly within the mythology of 1960s rock stardom. But at Altamont, surrounded by bikers with pool cues and a chemically unstable crowd, the performance took on a different quality.

Not because Jagger literally “summoned evil,” as some later interpretations suggest. The reality is less supernatural and more disturbing.

Everyone had started believing in the performance too much.

The audience believed in the Stones as revolutionary figures. The Stones believed in their own myth. The cameras believed the chaos was usable. The Hells Angels believed they had been authorised to control the crowd by force.

And eventually reality broke through the theatre.

Meredith Hunter

Meredith Hunter was eighteen years old. He attended Altamont with his girlfriend, Patty Bredehoft. Multiple witnesses remembered him immediately because of his striking green suit and the way he stood out sharply in the largely white crowd near the front of the stage.

Race formed part of the atmosphere surrounding Altamont, whether participants consciously acknowledged it or not. Hunter was a young Black man moving through a crowd dominated by white bikers, white hippie culture, and increasingly aggressive crowd dynamics. Several accounts suggest that hostility toward him escalated quickly once tensions began.

Even the exact timeline of Hunter’s death remains disputed.

Many retellings place the killing during “Sympathy for the Devil,” partly because that was when Mick Jagger reportedly spotted a gun, and panic spread across the stage. Tony Scaduto describes Jagger stopping mid-performance after seeing what appeared to be a revolver in the crowd.

But journalist Stanley Booth later argued that the fatal stabbing itself occurred during “Under My Thumb.” The confusion reflects the broader atmosphere of Altamont itself: darkness, overlapping fights, fragmented memories, poor visibility, noise, panic, and rapidly escalating violence.

What is clear is that Hunter became involved in a confrontation near the stage after violence had already erupted around him.

His girlfriend later described the situation very differently from the simplified versions that appeared in many early reports. According to her account, Hunter did not initially arrive waving a gun at the crowd or stage. Instead, the physical assault began first. A confrontation broke out between Hunter and members of the Hells Angels near the amplifiers. He was beaten, chased, and attacked by multiple men before drawing the revolver.

This distinction matters.

The surviving footage from Gimme Shelter does not provide the neat clarity many later summaries imply. The footage is chaotic, dark, fragmented, and difficult to interpret in real time. Slowed-down analysis appears to show Hunter drawing the gun after violence had already erupted around him, rather than calmly brandishing it beforehand. He also never appears to be pointing it at the stage.

What survives on film is not a clean narrative of aggressor and victim. It is a confused collision of fear, panic, intoxication, crowd pressure, racial tension, and escalating violence.

Alan Passaro, a Hells Angel, stabbed Hunter repeatedly. Witnesses later described Angels continuing to beat Hunter even after the revolver had been removed from his possession. Some accounts claimed they even prevented members of the crowd from helping him immediately afterwards.

Hunter was eventually carried to the medical tent, but there was no helicopter available to transport him to the hospital despite the scale of the event. He died shortly afterwards.

Passaro was later acquitted after claiming self-defence.

The Crowd Became Spectators

One of the most unsettling aspects of Altamont is the crowd’s passivity.

Hundreds of people witnessed violence throughout the day. Many were horrified. But very few intervened successfully. Some could not see clearly. Some were too intoxicated. Others were frightened after watching the Hells Angels attack anyone who challenged them.

That paralysis feels strangely modern.

People were no longer simply participants in a communal gathering. Increasingly, they became spectators to their own disintegration. Violence unfolded through confusion, stage lights, intoxication, rumours, camera lenses, and partial visibility. Some people near the back of the crowd reportedly had little understanding of what was happening near the stage at all.

The cameras intensified that feeling.

Altamont was not simply experienced. It was recorded.

And the fact that Meredith Hunter’s death became inseparable from documentary footage only deepened the sense that reality itself was becoming performance.

Altamont and Manson: The Same Dark Season

Altamont also belongs to the same psychological landscape as the Manson case.

Researcher Mae Brussell connected Altamont and the Manson murders as twin symbols of the violent collapse of the 1960s counterculture. Both events occurred within the same final weeks of 1969. Both became media spectacles. Both transformed public perceptions of hippie culture almost overnight.

There is also a lesser-known overlap worth noting: Susan Atkins gave her grand jury testimony on December 5, 1969 — the day before Altamont. That testimony, which helped establish the emerging “Helter Skelter” narrative, was already spreading through newspapers while the Altamont crowd gathered in California. Footage from Altamont shows Sweet William confronting members of Jefferson Airplane during the escalating violence near the stage. This does not prove coordination or conspiracy, but it illustrates how closely interconnected the late-1960s worlds of biker culture, occult cinema, psychedelic music, underground celebrity, and the Manson milieu often were.

That does not mean Altamont and the Manson murders were directly connected operationally. But culturally and psychologically, they belonged to the same atmosphere. By the end of 1969, the image of the counterculture was already mutating from utopian dream into media nightmare.

Operation CHAOS and the Atmosphere of Suspicion

Operation CHAOS was a real CIA domestic surveillance operation targeting anti-war activists, radicals, and countercultural groups between 1967 and 1974.

That fact matters because the counterculture was not simply left alone to evolve organically. It was monitored, infiltrated, studied, and increasingly treated as a political threat.

But this is where the evidence needs careful handling.

There is a difference between saying Operation CHAOS existed, intelligence agencies monitored countercultural movements, and drug culture contributed to instability, and claiming the CIA directly orchestrated Altamont.

The first claims are documented. The second requires stronger evidence than currently exists.

What can reasonably be said is that Altamont unfolded inside a wider atmosphere of distrust, surveillance, psychological instability, biker violence, drug proliferation, political unrest, and media manipulation. By late 1969, American society already felt fractured.

That atmosphere shaped how people experienced Altamont — and how they interpreted it afterwards.

The End of the Free Festival Illusion

Altamont did not end outdoor festivals. It ended a particular fantasy about them.

After Altamont, it became much harder to believe that enormous gatherings fuelled by drugs, vague idealism, minimal structure, and “good vibes” alone could safely sustain themselves.

The heavily controlled corporate festival culture that followed was partly a reaction to that fear. Security barriers, professional crowd management, insurance requirements, medical planning, and stricter policing all became more important after disasters like Altamont.

But Altamont also exposed something deeper.

The counterculture thought it had escaped the old world. Instead, it reproduced many of the same hierarchies: stars above, bodies below, violence at the edges, money behind the curtain.

The Real Lesson of Altamont

Altamont was not simply “Woodstock gone wrong.”

It was what happened when the mythology of the late 1960s collided with reality. The myth said music could unite everyone. Reality said the crowd was exhausted, dehydrated, paranoid, and unsafe. The myth said rock stars were revolutionary figures. Reality said they were also businessmen, performers, and image managers. The myth said the Hells Angels were outlaw folk heroes. Reality said they were violent men armed with pool cues, knives, alcohol, and authority. The myth said the cameras were documenting history. Reality said history was bleeding out in front of them.

Even the surviving narratives of Altamont remain fragmented and incomplete. Journalist Stanley Booth later acknowledged that some reporters and observers began leaving the site as conditions deteriorated and violence escalated. Booth himself remained unusually close to the Rolling Stones throughout the tour while working on material that would later inform his writing about the band and Altamont. That does not invalidate his account, which remains one of the most detailed descriptions of the event, but it does highlight an uncomfortable reality: much of what later generations “know” about Altamont comes through a relatively small number of surviving perspectives shaped by fear, confusion, limited visibility, proximity to the band, documentary editing, and the chaos of the moment itself.

Altamont is remembered because it shattered a fantasy. The idea that music alone could hold together a chemically exhausted, commercially exploited, emotionally fragmented crowd collapsed in front of the cameras. The violence did not come from nowhere. It emerged from exhaustion, ego, paranoia, mythology, poor planning, and a culture beginning to consume itself.

That is why Altamont still matters.

It was not the death of innocence. There was never as much innocence as the myth claimed.

It was the moment the mask slipped.

One of the most unusual figures connected to the Redlands bust was a man referred to in different accounts as either Henry Schneiderman or David Schneiderman. Even his identity became confused in reporting.

Schneiderman reportedly carried multiple passports and was allegedly in possession of far larger quantities of drugs than those ultimately used against Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, including heroin, cannabis, LSD, and amphetamines. Yet despite this, he was never treated as the central target of the operation.

According to later reporting in the Daily Mail, Schneiderman allegedly confessed years later that he had helped orchestrate the bust after being caught smuggling drugs into Britain himself.

The article claimed Schneiderman said customs officers discovered drugs hidden inside a guitar amplifier he brought into the country. According to the account, he later claimed he was pressured into cooperating after meetings with men he identified as being connected to the FBI and MI6.

No definitive evidence proving intelligence involvement has ever publicly surfaced. However, Schneiderman’s later statements intensified long-running suspicions surrounding the case.

What makes the situation especially striking is that while the Rolling Stones became the public face of the scandal, Schneiderman himself appears to have escaped serious consequences and eventually left Britain altogether.

Whether he was an opportunist, informant, fantasist, or something more connected to the machinery surrounding the case, his presence highlights the deeper ambiguities at the heart of Redlands. The authorities appeared less interested in dismantling drug networks than in publicly humiliating Britain’s most notorious symbols of countercultural rebellion.

Reinvention in Los Angeles

After disappearing from the British scene, Schneiderman resurfaced in California under a new identity: David Jove.

In Los Angeles, he reinvented himself as an underground producer, filmmaker, and cultural provocateur. Friends and collaborators later described him as charismatic, hyper-intelligent, manipulative, funny, exhausting, and deeply volatile.

Multiple people who knew him independently described the same contradiction. Jove could be charming and visionary one moment, then intimidating or emotionally destructive the next.

By the late 1970s, he had embedded himself within the emerging Los Angeles punk and new wave underground — a scene very different from the utopian idealism associated with the “Summer of Love.”

The optimism of the 1960s had curdled into something harsher. Heroin addiction, violence, paranoia, nihilism, emotional collapse, and self-destruction increasingly defined the atmosphere surrounding the underground scene. Jove seemed perfectly suited to that environment.

New Wave Theater and the LA Underground

New Wave Theater became David Jove’s most lasting cultural contribution.

Broadcast initially through public access television before later moving to the USA Network, the show became one of the first major platforms for underground punk and new wave bands in Los Angeles. Groups such as Dead Kennedys and Fear appeared on the program long before mainstream media accepted punk culture.

The production itself reflected the instability of the scene through abrasive humour, chaotic editing, strange staging, and confrontational energy.

At the centre of the show stood Peter Ivers.

Unlike Jove, Ivers projected warmth, curiosity, and eccentric intelligence. His playful personality and unusual on-screen presence made him one of the defining figures of the program.

That contrast between the two men later became central to the mythology surrounding Ivers’ death. Several people connected to the production described Jove as controlling and domineering, while Ivers appeared more collaborative and emotionally open. According to later accounts, tensions emerged as Ivers began considering opportunities outside the show.

Occultism, Performance, and Power

Jove’s fascination with occultism became notorious within the Los Angeles underground.

Much of what survives about his personality comes through fragmented memories, rumours, and oral histories from people who moved within the punk and alternative scene at the time. Several of the descriptions explored in this article come from interviews I conducted with writer and musician Nikolas Schreck, who was directly involved in the Los Angeles underground scene during the late 1970s and early 1980s and encountered many of the personalities surrounding David Jove.

According to Schreck and others who knew him, Jove was heavily influenced by Aleister Crowley and obsessed with ideas involving domination, willpower, and personal transformation. Associates claimed he deliberately cultivated an aura of danger around himself.

Schreck described the wider atmosphere of the underground scene as deeply nihilistic and psychologically unstable, shaped by heavy drug use, violence, paranoia, and self-created mythology. In that environment, figures like Jove could become both admired and feared at the same time.

The difficulty with David Jove is separating documented fact from mythology. The Los Angeles underground scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s thrived on rumour, paranoia, performance, and self-created legend. Stories surrounding Jove often blur the line between firsthand testimony, exaggeration, and genuine fear. Yet the consistency of certain descriptions remains striking.

People repeatedly described him as manipulative, highly intelligent, emotionally volatile, fascinated by power, and capable of intimidating behaviour. Heavy drug use only intensified the instability surrounding him.

What makes Jove historically interesting is not simply the possibility that he committed crimes, but the way he embodied a broader cultural shift taking place beneath the surface of post-1960s counterculture itself — away from idealism and toward manipulation, nihilism, fragmentation, and self-created mythology.

The Murder of Peter Ivers

On March 3rd 1983, Peter Ivers was found bludgeoned to death inside his Los Angeles apartment. According to reporting later compiled by True Crime Edition, the crime scene was heavily contaminated before police properly secured the apartment. Friends, associates, and bystanders reportedly moved through the scene, complicating any later forensic reconstruction.

A hammer was found near Ivers’ body, but investigators reportedly recovered no usable fingerprints. Stereo equipment had also been stolen, leading some investigators to initially consider burglary as a possible motive.

The case was never solved.

Almost immediately, suspicion within the underground scene focused on David Jove. According to later accounts from people close to the case, tensions had developed between Jove and Ivers before the murder. Some believed Ivers intended to distance himself from New Wave Theater and pursue projects outside Jove’s control with MTV, leaving Jove behind.

Other stories described him making cryptic comments about the murder or framing admissions as dreams, jokes, or psychological games. Despite decades of suspicion and rumour, investigators never charged Jove, and Peter Ivers’ murder officially remains unsolved.

What gives the case its lasting power is not simply the mystery itself, but what it seemed to symbolise: the darker underside of underground culture — a world where charisma, manipulation, drugs, fear, and unstable personalities often blurred together.

The Strange Death of Lenny Breau

Jove’s name later became entangled in rumours surrounding another death: jazz guitarist Lenny Breau. Breau was found dead in a swimming pool in 1984. Initially believed to be an accidental drowning, it was later determined he had been strangled.

As detailed in a Guitar Player retrospective on Lenny Breau, Breau struggled with addiction and instability for years before his death.

Nikolas Schreck claimed Jove appeared to know details about the killing before they became public. Others described threatening behaviour when the subject was raised.

Again, there was never enough evidence to charge him.

What remains striking is the recurring pattern: Jove repeatedly appeared at the centre of environments defined by charisma, manipulation, addiction, emotional instability, and unexplained violence.

The Collapse of the Counterculture

David Jove’s story feels significant because it reflects a larger transformation within post-1960s counterculture itself. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, many of the ideals associated with the psychedelic era had deteriorated. The language of liberation increasingly coexisted with exploitation, paranoia, coercion, addiction, and emotional collapse.

Figures like Jove thrived inside those environments because underground scenes often confuse charisma with genius. Manipulative personalities are frequently protected so long as they appear creative, visionary, or culturally important. The same pattern appears repeatedly throughout countercultural history. Unstable personalities become mythologised, destructive behaviour is reframed as artistic intensity, and vulnerable people are drawn into psychologically chaotic environments.

Jove seemed to consciously build mythology around himself. Reinvention became central to his identity — from David Schneiderman at Redlands to David Jove in Los Angeles. Whether he was performing darkness or genuinely dangerous remains unresolved.

Final Years and Legacy

Following Peter Ivers’ death and the collapse of New Wave Theater, Jove’s life reportedly deteriorated.

Former collaborators described increasing isolation, worsening substance abuse, and failed attempts to revive his creative career. By the time he died in 2004, he had become a shadowy figure remembered largely through rumours, unresolved questions, and fragmented memories from the underground scene.

Yet despite everything, New Wave Theater left a genuine cultural legacy.

The program captured a volatile period in American underground culture before punk was sanitised or commercialised. It documented a moment when public access television, underground music, post-1960s disillusionment, and media experimentation collided.

David Jove remains one of the strangest figures connected to that world: a man linked to one of the most infamous drug busts in rock history, who later claimed he had been pressured into helping set it up, before reinventing himself inside another unstable underground scene haunted by violence and paranoia.

His story sits at the intersection of counterculture, media mythmaking, manipulation, paranoia, and self-destruction — a dark thread running from Redlands in 1967 to the fractured Los Angeles underground of the early 1980s.

By early 1967, the Rolling Stones had become more than a rock band. To much of Britain’s political class, tabloid press, and conservative establishment, they represented something dangerous: sexual freedom, drug experimentation, anti-authoritarianism, and a youth culture slipping out of control.

If the Beatles still projected charm and optimism. The Stones projected something darker. Their image was openly provocative, their lyrics increasingly cynical, and their lifestyle seemed to embody every fear middle-class Britain had about the rapidly changing 1960s.

Then came Redlands.

Officially, the raid on Keith Richards’ Sussex estate was a drug operation. In reality, it became something far larger: a symbolic public crackdown on the counterculture itself. The resulting arrests, prison sentences, tabloid hysteria, and public humiliation revealed a Britain deeply uneasy with the cultural forces emerging around rock music, psychedelia, and youth rebellion.

More than half a century later, the Redlands bust still feels less like an ordinary criminal case and more like a collision between celebrity, politics, media manipulation, and moral panic.

Much of the mythology surrounding Redlands comes filtered through decades of contradictory interviews, tabloid sensationalism, and carefully managed rock biographies. One of the darker and more politically charged accounts appears in Anthony Scaduto’s Mick Jagger: Everybody’s Lucifer, which framed the raid less as an isolated drug bust and more as part of a growing cultural war between the British establishment and the counterculture.

Britain Before Redlands

To understand why the Redlands raid became such a cultural flashpoint, it helps to remember just how rigid Britain still was in the mid-1960s. Despite the mythology of “Swinging London,” much of British society remained conservative, hierarchical, and deeply class-conscious. The postwar generation had spent decades rebuilding stability after World War II. Respectability mattered. Institutions mattered. Traditional family structures mattered.

The counterculture threatened all of it.

Psychedelic drugs, long hair, anti-war politics, sexual liberation, and rejection of conventional morality were no longer confined to small artistic circles. They were becoming mainstream youth culture. The Rolling Stones stood directly at the centre of that shift.

Mick Jagger in particular became a lightning rod for establishment anxieties. Educated, articulate, sexually provocative, and openly dismissive of conventional morality, he disturbed critics precisely because he did not fit the stereotype of a mindless delinquent. He looked like someone capable of influencing people.

To many older commentators, the Stones were not simply entertainers. They were symptoms of social collapse.

Redlands: The Party Before the Raid

Redlands, Keith Richards’ country home in Sussex, had become a temporary sanctuary for musicians, artists, socialites, and drug users drifting through the psychedelic scene of the late 1960s.

On February 12, 1967, the atmosphere inside the house was surreal even before the police arrived.

Bob Dylan’s Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 reportedly played on the gramophone while guests drifted through various stages of intoxication. LSD had been consumed throughout the day. Hash circulated openly. The mood was lethargic, dreamlike, and detached from ordinary reality.

Marianne Faithfull later described lounging in a fur rug after taking a bath while conversations drifted around her in a haze of exhaustion and psychedelia.

Then the police arrived.

At around 8 PM, Chief Inspector Gordon Dinley and a team of officers entered the property with a search warrant alleging drug possession and use.

What they walked into must have seemed like another planet.

The officers encountered half-dressed guests, bizarre behaviour shaped by acid trips, blaring music, and an atmosphere that clashed completely with the disciplined world of British law enforcement. Several accounts suggest the police themselves appeared confused by what they were seeing.

One of the strangest moments involved Marianne Faithfull theatrically exposing herself while objecting to a search, an incident later twisted by tabloids into evidence of sexual depravity and “orgiastic” behaviour.

The reality appears to have been far less dramatic than the mythology that followed.

But mythology was exactly what much of the press wanted.

The Strange Case of David Schneiderman

One of the most intriguing and poorly explained figures connected to the Redlands bust was a man referred to in various accounts as either Henry Schneiderman or David Schneiderman.

Even his identity became confused in reporting.

Descriptions of Schneiderman vary wildly. Some portrayed him as American. Others claimed he was Canadian. He reportedly possessed multiple passports and was carrying significant quantities of drugs, including heroin, cannabis, LSD, and amphetamines.

And yet, despite allegedly possessing far more serious substances than those ultimately used against Jagger and Richards, Schneiderman was not treated as the primary target of the operation.

Instead, he was apparently allowed to leave Britain.

That detail has fueled decades of speculation.

Some researchers and journalists later questioned whether Schneiderman may have had connections to the tabloid press, particularly News of the World, which had already launched highly publicised accusations about Mick Jagger’s drug use before the raid occurred.

Others speculated more broadly about intelligence connections or informant activity, though definitive evidence remains elusive.

What makes Schneiderman fascinating is not simply the conspiracy theories surrounding him, but the obvious imbalance at the heart of the case itself. The authorities seemed far less interested in large-scale drug possession than in publicly humiliating Britain’s most notorious rock band.

The Tabloid War Against the Stones

The Redlands raid did not happen in a vacuum.

Shortly before the bust, News of the World had published allegations accusing Mick Jagger of drug use. Jagger responded by threatening legal action for libel.

Soon afterwards, police raided Redlands.

Critics later argued that sections of the British tabloid press had blurred the line between journalism and active participation in policing celebrity culture. The Stones were ideal targets: famous enough to generate headlines, controversial enough to provoke outrage, and visible enough to serve as examples.

Once the arrests became public, the press exploded into a frenzy of moral panic.

Headlines focused obsessively on sex, drugs, decadence, and corruption. Marianne Faithfull’s fur rug became tabloid shorthand for degeneracy. Rumours circulated describing elaborate orgies and depraved rituals that bore little resemblance to the reality described by people present.

The aim was not simply to report events.

It was to construct a symbolic story about cultural decay.

The image of Mick Jagger and Robert Fraser handcuffed together became especially powerful. Depending on political perspective, the photographs either showed dangerous social corrupters finally being punished, or an authoritarian establishment humiliating youth icons to maintain control.

In truth, the authorities may have unintentionally achieved both at once.

The Trial and the Need for an Example

When the case finally reached court in June 1967, the atmosphere surrounding it had already become politically charged.

Jagger faced charges connected to amphetamines prescribed by his doctor, Dr. Raymond Dixon Firth. Keith Richards was accused of allowing cannabis smoking at his property. Robert Fraser faced heroin-related charges.

The sentences shocked much of the public.

Judge Block sentenced Keith Richards to one year in prison and a £500 fine. Mick Jagger received three months and a £100 fine. Legally, the punishments were severe. Symbolically, they were devastating.

The establishment appeared determined to make examples of them.

The outrage became so intense that even establishment newspapers began expressing concern. Most famously, The Times published William Rees-Mogg’s now legendary editorial asking: “Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel?”

The article questioned whether the punishments were wildly disproportionate to the offences. That editorial mattered because it signalled something important: sections of the British establishment itself had begun to feel uncomfortable with the spectacle unfolding around the Stones.

Mick Jagger in Brixton Prison

For all his public swagger, Mick Jagger reportedly struggled emotionally during the early days of imprisonment at Brixton.

Accounts describe him crying, overwhelmed by self-pity and shock at the reality of incarceration. Marianne Faithfull later recalled telling him to pull himself together rather than collapse emotionally under the pressure.

Scaduto’s account of Jagger’s imprisonment strips away much of the glamorous mythology surrounding the Stones, depicting moments of fear, humiliation, and emotional vulnerability that later retellings often softened.

Remarkably, Jagger adapted quickly.

Within days, he had reportedly become head of the prison library, organizing books and settling into the strange routines of prison life. The transformation reflected one of Jagger’s defining traits: an ability to observe systems, adapt to them, and maintain composure under pressure.

Even in prison, he remained productive.

During this period he began writing material that would feed into “We Love You,” the Stones’ response to the enormous public support campaign that emerged after the sentencing.

Fans flooded prisons and newspapers with letters. Demonstrations erupted. The attempt to publicly shame the Stones had partially backfired.

Instead of destroying them, the case strengthened their myth.

Keith Richards and Wormwood Scrubs

Keith Richards’ experience in Wormwood Scrubs was harsher and more chaotic. New inmates were reportedly stripped of belts, ties, and sharp objects due to suicide concerns. Richards later described the shock of suddenly entering a brutal institutional environment entirely removed from the insulated world of fame and wealth.

One of the strangest details from his imprisonment involved fellow prisoners allegedly offering him drugs shortly after arrival, a surreal contradiction given the entire reason for his incarceration.

Richards declined.

The moment captures something absurd about the broader panic surrounding the case. Drugs themselves were not rare inside British society. What mattered was symbolism.

The Stones had become visible embodiments of cultural rebellion, and visibility made them useful targets.

When Richards finally received news of bail, inmates reportedly celebrated his release alongside him, recognising both the unfairness and theatricality of the situation.

Did Redlands Change the Rolling Stones?

The Redlands bust did not destroy the Rolling Stones.

But it may have changed them.

The raw recklessness of the mid-1960s gradually hardened into something darker, more cynical, and more controlled. Publicly, the band became increasingly careful about image management, legal exposure, and media strategy.

This did not mean the music became safe. If anything, albums like Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed grew more sinister and psychologically complex.

But the naïve openness of the psychedelic era was fading.

The counterculture itself was beginning to fragment under the weight of drug casualties, violence, paranoia, media hostility, and political backlash. Redlands became one of the moments where many young people realized the establishment was willing to strike back hard.

Marianne Faithfull later reflected that the authorities seemed less interested in morality itself than in preserving social order. The Stones represented instability, unpredictability, and cultural change at a scale older institutions no longer knew how to manage.

That fear shaped the response.

Brian Jones and the Cost of Being Targeted

No member of the Stones embodied the darker aftermath of this period more than Brian Jones.

Already struggling with drug dependency and deteriorating health, Jones became the subject of repeated arrests and increasing scrutiny. He was busted multiple times within an astonishingly short period, intensifying both paranoia and instability.

Over time, the public mythology surrounding Brian Jones became heavily simplified. Mainstream narratives often reduce his story to self-destruction alone, while paying less attention to the relentless pressure surrounding him during his final years.

Questions still linger about the people around him, including figures such as Tom Keylock and Frank Thorogood, and about how much of Jones’ collapse resulted from manipulation, exploitation, addiction, or deliberate abandonment.

Even today, contradictions remain everywhere in the official stories surrounding the Stones during this era.

Accounts differ wildly. Memories shift. Interviews contradict surviving footage.

Like many events surrounding the Rolling Stones in the late 1960s, the Redlands story exists somewhere between documented fact, media invention, self-created mythology, and fading memory. Different biographies frequently contradict one another, while participants often reshaped their own narratives over time.

What remains undeniable, however, is the cultural impact of the raid itself.

Redlands and the Politics of Moral Panic

Looking back now, the Redlands bust feels less like a conventional criminal case and more like an early modern media spectacle. The authorities were not simply policing drugs.

They were policing symbolism.

The Rolling Stones represented a generation drifting away from traditional structures of authority, sexuality, patriotism, class behaviour, and social discipline. The public punishment of Jagger and Richards became a warning aimed far beyond the band itself.

At the same time, the case revealed the extraordinary power of media narratives to shape reality. Tabloids transformed a confused psychedelic gathering into a national morality tale. Rumours became accepted facts. Public humiliation became entertainment.

Yet the crackdown also helped immortalise the Stones.

Attempts to crush countercultural figures often strengthen their mythology instead. Redlands transformed Mick Jagger and Keith Richards from controversial musicians into symbols of resistance against institutional overreach.

That symbolic power remains part of the band’s legacy today.

And more than fifty years later, the Redlands bust still raises uncomfortable questions about celebrity, media influence, selective enforcement, and the relationship between power and public morality in modern society.

When people talk about the Manson murders, they are often treated as something isolated—something that came out of nowhere. But when the case is placed within the wider culture of the late 1960s, that idea becomes harder to believe. After years of looking at the case not just as true crime, but in the context of the social history surrounding it, certain patterns begin to emerge—patterns that extend beyond a single event.

This particular line of thinking was prompted by a passage I came across in Goodbye Baby and Amen: A Saraband for the Sixties—written before the murders—which described Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate in a way that felt, in hindsight, unsettlingly accurate.

This isn’t about shifting responsibility away from the people who committed those crimes. It’s about the environment around them—and the patterns that, once you start to see them, become difficult to ignore.

What Was the “Permissive Society”?

The term “permissive society” is often used to describe the cultural shift of the 1960s—a move away from older social restrictions towards greater freedom in areas like sex, relationships, and lifestyle. It was tied to broader changes: youth culture, film, music, and the growing use of drugs—particularly psychedelics.

For many, this felt like liberation.

But it also meant that boundaries were being removed faster than people knew how to navigate.

The Promise of Freedom—and Its Tensions

Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski came to represent this new culture—young, successful, and highly visible.

But even at the time, they were seen not simply as participants in that world, but as figures who embodied its contradictions:

“Anyone who is interested in the history of the Sixties and the Permissive Society must consider the Polanskis. They knew very well the excitement, the miseries, the happiness, and the fear of the times.”

But the same passage also adds an important qualification:

“There is an honesty, it is almost naive, about the couple Polanski that few movie people ever achieve.”

That detail matters.

It suggests not just participation in this culture, but a particular way of moving through it—open, unguarded, and perhaps not fully aware of the risks that came with that level of exposure.

That tension becomes clearer in Sharon Tate’s own words:

“I wish I had the tolerance to let everybody have complete freedom… To be able to take a man home and make love and enjoy it without some lurking puritanical guilt interrupting the pleasure… I get frightened… mentally it’s what I want, but emotionally it’s more difficult to take.”

This is not a simple expression of liberation. It is a description of conflict—between what the culture encouraged, and what it actually felt like to live within it.

Image vs Reality

Publicly, Tate and Polanski were presented as a modern, liberated ideal. Privately, accounts suggest something far more unstable. Within what was often described as a typical sixties “open” marriage, the reality appears to have been more complicated:

“Though Sharon accepted her marriage to Polanski as a typical sixties ‘open’ union, she became nervous when her husband’s appetite for promiscuous sex began to rival Warren’s.”

What is described here is not confidence, but unease.

“By 1969… she felt embarrassed and emotionally adrift.”

Taken together, these accounts suggest a gap between the idea of a liberated relationship and the lived reality of it. Freedom, in practice, did not necessarily produce the stability Sharon truly wanted or give her the protection she needed when she needed it the most.

A Shift in Tone

The cultural changes of the late 1960s were not only about freedom—they also reflected a shift in tone. Films like Bonnie and Clyde helped define that shift, reframing rebellion in darker terms:

“It cheered amorality, revelled in blood and guts, and it’s finger-flipping attitude towards the establishement had long since seeped into the culture…It resonated with an ominous strain that fostered violence and sadism.”

This wasn’t just about rejecting the Establishment—it reflected a culture increasingly drawn toward provocation, excess, and disruption.

That atmosphere is echoed in the writing of Joan Didion:

“I recall a time when the dogs barked every night and the moon was always full.”

It is an image of unease rather than liberation—a sense that something had already shifted, even before it was fully understood.

A Culture Without Clear Boundaries

The instability associated with Cielo Drive did not appear suddenly. Earlier environments, such as Summit Ridge Drive, already reflected similar patterns.

As recalled by Leslie Caron:

“Sharon and Roman were lax in a way, and their house was very available… it always had that edge… menacing… dangerous… the Summit Ridge house became infamous as a place to score drugs… Sharon didn’t object… her philosophy was ‘live and let live.’”

This predates the murders, yet already points to an environment where access was open, boundaries were unclear, and control was limited.

Sharon didn’t object—her philosophy was “live and let live.”

It’s difficult not to see that as part of the same “almost naive” openness described earlier—an approach that worked in theory, but offered little protection in practice.

What might have felt like freedom had, in practice, created instability.

“We Thought We Had the Answer”

Those who were part of this culture describe it in similar terms.

As Gregg Jakobson—a talent scout who worked with Terry Melcher and later introduced Charles Manson to him—reflected:

“It really was a perfect storm.

All those things coming together—wanting to leave the ’50s behind, the drugs, the music, and the influence the drugs had on the music.

We really thought we had discovered something new.

We really thought we had discovered the answer—drugs.

But that isn’t the answer, we found out.

Still, for a while, we really believed that was it… that that was the answer.”

Jonathan Taplin—who worked as tour manager for The Band, closely associated with Bob Dylan—adds:

“You’re young, and you think you know what the hell’s going on.

That’s exactly what we felt in 1969.

But we didn’t know.

And it can turn ugly really fast.”

These perspectives describe belief—but also overconfidence.

Both men were embedded in the Los Angeles music industry in the late 1960s, speaking from direct experience of the world they describe.

When It Turned

What follows is not a sudden collapse, but a shift.

The confidence described earlier gives way to fatigue, instability, and disillusionment.

As John Bettis—best known for writing the lyrics to “Goodbye to Love”—later recalled:

“People forget now how dark it was from ’69 to ’76… America was not a happy place. Far from it. No matter where you turned—whether it was the gas crisis, whether it was the rampant drug problems everybody had, whether it was the fact that we had opened up a Pandora’s box with free love and relationships to where there wasn’t any fixed point any more.

By the time we got to 1969 everybody between the ages of twenty and twenty-eight was a drug addict. Everybody had been through two or three failed relationships of living with somebody, because we were all kids who didn’t know what the fuck we were doing.

And by the time you got to 1970 you were exhausted and you were sure that if you could just find another drug you’d be OK!

And then suddenly it was all dark.”

This is not a literal account—but it is revealing.

What Bettis describes is a culture that had lost its centre. Freedom had removed structure, but nothing had replaced it.

The result was not liberation, but exhaustion.

Reactions From Inside

Some of the most revealing perspectives come from those closest to the scene.

Dennis Hopper

In April 1971, the Los Angeles Free Press published Hopper’s remarks under the headline The New Hollywood Myth Figure. His words shocked even in that era:

“The people up in the Tate house that were killed were into some bad stuff... what goes around comes around. The people killed in the Tate house were victims of themselves because they had fallen into sadism and masochism and bestiality and they recorded it all on videotape. The LA Police told me this. I know that three days before they were killed, 25 people were invited to that house to the mass whipping of a dealer from Sunset Strip who’d given them bad dope. The press asked me what I thought, and all I could say was it was unfortunate… but it was inevitable.”

Dennis Hopper described the murders as “inevitable.”

There is no evidence for the claims he made. What matters is what they reveal about how the moment was interpreted. In American Dreamer (this interview came from the outtakes of the movie), he appears disjointed—struggling to make sense of events within a culture that already felt unstable.

Bill Tennant

Bill Tennant, Roman Polanski’s manager, offers a harsher and more confrontational perspective.

As quoted in Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties, Tennant framed the story in starkly opposing terms:

“Roman is a shit… There were two versions of their story. Which one do you want to tell?”

He describes one version in which Polanski, working in London, had become increasingly detached from his pregnant wife:

Tate “wound up getting murdered because he was fucking around in London,” he said.

But he contrasts that with another perspective—recalling Polanski after the funerals:

“Roman… looking across the table at me and saying, I wish I had spent more. I wish I had bought more dresses. I wish I had given more gifts.”

For Tennant, the question was not simply what happened, but how it should be understood:

“So what story do you want to tell?”

His broader view of the period is equally uncompromising:

“There was nothing innocent about it… It was retribution… ‘He who dies with the most toys wins.’… What’s innocent about drugs? What’s innocent about promiscuous sex?… You tell me where the innocence was.”

He goes further still, describing a culture in which, as he saw it:

“nobody cared or gave a shit about Sharon Tate—not because they were mean, but because she was expendable.”

These are not neutral observations. They are harsh, emotional, and in many cases unsupported by evidence.

But they are revealing.

They also reflect what the experience appears to have done to Tennant himself. He went on to struggle with alcoholism and cocaine addiction, at one point losing his family and living homeless.

He later recovered. When Tom O’Neill tracked him down years later, Tennant was sober, remarried, and working as a manager for Michael Flatley, best known for Lord of the Dance.

That trajectory doesn’t prove his interpretation.

But it does give context to it, even years later, he continued to give a damning account of the atmosphere around Cielo Drive—his view of events didn’t soften with time. If anything, he remained visibly affected by what had happened—and still deeply critical of the environment he had been part of.

“No One Was Surprised”

Joan Didion wrote:

“I remember all of the days misinformation very clearly, and I also remember this, and I wish I didn’t: I remember that no one was surprised.”

Even in the absence of clear facts, there was already a shared sense that something had gone wrong. The confusion—what people were told, what they believed, and what later proved to be inaccurate—did not prevent that reaction. If anything, it reinforces it.

Because if an event of that scale fails to shock people in the way it should, it suggests that the boundaries had already shifted.

That the atmosphere had already changed.

That things, in some way, were already beginning to feel out of control.

The End of the Illusion

Taken together, these accounts do not describe a sudden rupture. They describe a pattern. A culture defined by freedom—but also by instability, excess, and a gradual loss of structure. The Manson murders did not create that shift.

But they did force it into the open.

By 1969, the culture described as liberated was already showing signs of strain: relationships breaking down, drug use escalating, and a growing sense that the boundaries people had moved beyond were not so easily replaced. The naivety that had defined much of the decade—the belief that freedom could exist without consequence—was beginning to give way to something else.

And the insider accounts that can sound harsh, even brutal, begin to make more sense in that context. They are not necessarily attempts to assign blame, but reflections of how the people inside it experienced that atmosphere.

Not clarity.

But recognition.

Bartłomiej Frykowski was two years old when his father was killed. He had no memory of him. His mother, Ewa Morelle, disappeared from his life soon after, leaving Poland and later losing parental rights, and he was raised instead by his grandparents in Łódź. As one account puts it, he “had no contact with his father… he was raised by his Frykowski grandparents.” This is where the story actually begins—not in Hollywood, but somewhere much quieter: a child connected to one of the most infamous crimes of the 20th century, growing up without the context, but carrying the consequence.

There are small details from that early period that stand out more in hindsight. From childhood, he was described as being drawn to knives, treating them less as tools and more as objects of fascination. A friend later recalled:

“Bartek was playing with an axe in a rather dangerous way. I said, ‘Stop it, I can’t stand to watch you plunge that axe into your stomach.’”

At the time, it was just a remark. Later, it reads differently.

At fourteen, everything shifts:

“He was unaware he had a mother… he believed she was his grandmother.”

When he finally meets her, he doesn’t grow into an identity—he’s handed one. As a teenager, he was in a relationship with a girl named Ania, who became pregnant. Their daughter, Maja Frykowska, was born from that relationship. But according to accounts, his mother intervened:

“Ewa Morelle contributed to the breakdown of their relationship.”

He left Ania before the birth of their child. Morelle didn’t just reappear—she redirected him:

“She convinced her son that he was destined for higher things.”

She took him from Łódź to Warsaw, introducing him to a different world—film circles, social connections, a version of life that echoed the image of his father.

“He lived in the cult of his father… who impressed him with his lifestyle and connections.”

Up until that point, his father had been an absence. After that point, he becomes something else—an idea to live up to.

Early Legal Aftermath

Even as a child, Bartek’s life intersected with the legal consequences of his father’s death. Civil proceedings in the United States resulted in compensation for victims’ families, and as Frykowski’s son was included, though the figures are inconsistently reported. Decades later, the legacy resurfaced when Guns N’ Roses released The Spaghetti Incident?, including a hidden track written by Charles Manson. Victims’ families objected, and royalties were redirected to them.

The Pattern Emerges

As he grew older, the pattern begins to take shape. He worked as a cinematographer, moving in film circles not entirely removed from his father’s world. For a time, there was stability. He married Monika. They had two children together, Sergiusz and Rozalia, and spent several years living in Germany. He found occasional work in film production, while Monika worked steadily to support the family.

But it didn’t hold. After returning to Poland, the relationship began to deteriorate. The life he had built didn’t translate cleanly back into the environment he had returned to. At the same time, another pattern re-emerged.

He became involved with Karolina Wajda after meeting her on the set of Pan Tadeusz, and began spending extended periods at her estate in Głuchy.

She saw it differently:

The Final Night

On the night of June 7, 1999, Bartłomiej Frykowski was staying at the country property of Karolina Wajda in Głuchy. The setting matters—this was a private, controlled environment. Inside the house were only three people: Bartek, Wajda, and her friend Katarzyna Z.

The evening began without any obvious sign of what was about to happen. When Wajda returned from Warsaw at around 10 p.m., Bartek opened the automatic gate from inside. He had been sitting with Katarzyna, watching a film and drinking wine. As she entered the house, he followed her, continuing a conversation that had already begun.

“He was talking constantly, in a calm tone… he blamed her for not understanding him, for not noticing him.”

She did not engage with him. Irritated by his drinking, she went into the kitchen to make tea. He followed her.

At some point during that interaction, he turned to her and said:

“I’ll show you my world… the world you don’t see.”

He then went to the kitchen cabinets, reached for a knife from the rack, and stabbed himself in the abdomen. Katarzyna Z. described what happened next:

“Karolina was talking to Bartek in the kitchen, but I don’t know what about. A moment later she ran towards me and shouted, ‘Kasia, Bartek stabbed himself.’”

When they returned, he was still conscious:

“He was sitting in a chair, one arm hanging down, the other holding his stomach. The knife was lying on the counter.”

“I thought he was pretending… but when he lifted his shirt, I saw blood and his intestines.”

The Immediate Aftermath

What followed is where the narrative begins to fracture. Instead of an immediate, urgent response, there are indications of delay and confusion. Katarzyna went out to wait for help. Police arrived before the ambulance, but were not brought inside immediately.

“She was standing with the officers on the porch, smoking cigarettes. She asked them not to come in so as not to cover their tracks.”

Inside, the scene had already been altered:

“The knife had been washed.”
“There were no traces of blood on the floor.”

“The story is bizarre… there should have been blood everywhere.”

“I suggested using a preparation that reveals blood traces… but no one was interested.”

What should have been a controlled forensic environment became something incomplete—difficult to reconstruct, and impossible to fully verify.

Injury and Death

He was transported to the hospital in critical condition, having already lost a significant amount of blood. His condition deteriorated during transport. He underwent emergency surgery, but the damage was severe. The official cause of death was a stab wound to the abdomen, resulting in vascular injury and hemorrhagic shock. The wound caused internal tearing almost immediately.

“It was difficult to determine the depth of the canal afterward.”

He did not die instantly. He went into hemorrhagic shock.

“A quicker response could have saved his life.”

That distinction matters. It places the focus not just on the injury itself, but on the time window that followed—something the available evidence cannot fully resolve.

An Unstable Conclusion

The case was ruled a suicide. But even within that:

“The location of the stab wound does not rule out that it was self-inflicted.”

The scene had been altered. Evidence was incomplete. A key witness disappeared. His wife challenged the ruling. The court upheld it. What remains is not a clear alternative—but an explanation that cannot be fully tested.

The Next Generation

Maja Frykowska grew up in Łódź, largely raised by her grandmother on the Dąbrowa housing estate—a typical, middle-class residential area, stable but unremarkable. She was born Agnieszka Frykowska, the daughter of Bartłomiej Frykowski and Anna Toth. Their relationship ended quickly, and her upbringing was shaped more by absence than instability in the conventional sense.

The pattern doesn’t repeat exactly—but the conditions are familiar. She entered public life abruptly through Big Brother, at a time when reality television drew huge audiences in Poland.

“The media reported sex that... didn’t happen! The truth is, one of the cameramen was rushing with the camera so hard that he crashed into a one-way mirror. The bang immediately brought me to my senses, and we ended our frolicking in the foam... Meanwhile, the news broke that we were fucking like rabbits on air, and I was dubbed the biggest ass of all time...”

Constructed Image

From that point on, she became a media figure built around controversy. She appeared in programmes like Bar, worked across television, and posed for the cover of Playboy. Each appearance reinforced the same idea: notoriety, visibility, and a persona that could be easily repeated. Over time, the image became self-sustaining—coverage focused less on what she did and more on what she represented. She became, in effect, known for being known. That shift removed control. Once fixed, the image filtered everything else, making it increasingly difficult to redefine.

Fame and Collapse

Behind that visibility, the situation was deteriorating.

“I fell into depression… I was high all the time.”

What appeared from the outside as an opportunity became pressure instead. The attention amplified instability rather than resolving it.

“I couldn’t defend myself from what people were saying… it just kept building.”

The dynamic became circular: the image invited criticism, the criticism reinforced the image, and any attempt to challenge it was absorbed into it. At the same time, there were experiences that never fully entered that public narrative.

“Who would believe me? A girl known for partying… for taking drugs… it would look like I asked for it.”

The image didn’t just misrepresent—it blocked anything that contradicted it.

Reframing the Narrative

Her story is often reduced to something simple—a “family curse.” Two violent deaths, both involving knives. It’s a neat explanation, but an incomplete one.

What actually appears across the three generations is more consistent: absence, instability, and identities shaped by events that were never fully understood. Each generation responds differently.

“My father was lost in this… he was obsessed with what happened.”

That’s the second generation—drawn into the past, unable to step outside it.

The third takes a different position, but that shift doesn’t happen randomly. It follows a complete change in identity.

“In 2010, Agnieszka Frykowska officially changed her name to Maja at the registry office . But an even greater transformation took place within her. In 2011, Maja joined the Christian Reformation Church . The former scandalmonger proclaimed that she owed her spiritual conversion to the grace of the Holy Spirit , which came upon her and helped her recover.”

Frykowska will forgive the criminals. The persona built around controversy was replaced with something much more controlled and inward-facing. She began speaking openly about faith, discipline, and personal responsibility, framing her earlier life as something she had to move beyond rather than continue.

That change matters because it reframes everything that follows.

Instead of staying within the same cycle of exposure and reaction, she steps outside it entirely.

From that position, she makes contact with Tex Watson—not publicly, but privately—through letters, receiving a direct response from one of the men responsible for her grandfather’s death.

“He wrote that there were no words to describe what had happened.”

“When I read them, I thought — this is the same hand that killed my grandfather.”

That is the point where the pattern could repeat—fixation, anger, being drawn deeper into something unresolved.

It doesn’t.

“I will forgive. I have to let it go.”

That decision isn’t separate from the transformation—it comes out of it. It doesn’t resolve the past, and it doesn’t explain what happened to her father.

But it changes how that history is carried forward.

Conclusion

Frykowski didn’t come from nowhere. He was born on December 22, 1936, in Łódź, into a family that had already built and rebuilt its position. His father, Jan Frykowski, had amassed a fortune before the war and returned to business afterwards, despite being viewed by the communist authorities as a “suspicious capitalist” and effectively treated as a class enemy.

This wasn’t a marginal background. Jan Frykowski owned a spinning mill and fabric wholesaler in Łódź, a transport company in Gdańsk, and a chemical manufacturing business in Leszno. It was a functioning network of enterprises, the kind that implied stability and long-term expectation. His three sons were expected to be educated and eventually take over.

Wojciech Frykowski followed that path, at least initially. He graduated from a textile technical school and went on to earn a diploma in textile engineering from the Łódź University of Technology. He lived in the back of his father’s factory and was directly involved in its operations, overseeing the production of ties and scarves. It’s a detail that rarely appears in English-language accounts, but it matters. It places him inside a practical, industrial environment—something grounded and structured, very different from the world he would later move into.

From Factory Life to Cultural Circles in Łódź

But alongside that, another life was developing.

In the 1950s and early 1960s, Łódź, Frykowski became a visible figure in a very different social scene. He was known locally as a “Polish playboy,” regularly seen with beautiful women and moving easily through elite circles. He was a fixture at the legendary Honoratka café, a meeting place for filmmakers, Film School students, and the cultural elite.

These weren’t casual encounters. Through these connections, and with their support, Frykowski began studying directing himself, although he never completed his studies. He positioned himself within that world early, not as an outsider looking in, but as someone already moving inside it.

Financing Polanski and Early Film Connections

He also played a more active role than is often acknowledged. In 1961, he partially financed Polański’s short film Mammals (1962 film), making him one of the first private film producers in the communist era. It’s a detail that rarely appears in simplified accounts, but it complicates the idea that he was merely drifting alongside more successful people.

Polanski’s own description of him reflects that contradiction. He recalled Frykowski as physically imposing—“something super masculine,” with the look of a nightclub bouncer—but added that beneath that surface there was a gentler nature, loyalty, and even sentimentality.

The film itself offers a small but telling detail. Frykowski appears briefly on screen as a sausage seller or shopkeeper—a minor role, but a real one. He raced cars and reportedly crashed them often, becoming the subject of local stories and exaggerations. He was also a skilled poker player, known for intense concentration and the ability to win significant sums, but equally prone to losing them again. One account describes him disappearing for days and returning with a watch he had repeatedly won and lost, remarking that he had “already won it seven times, lost seven times, but in the end, won.”

It’s a small story, but it captures something essential—momentum without stability.

At the same time, he could be dependable in very specific ways. When a friend’s father died, Frykowski took charge of organising the funeral. That detail sits awkwardly alongside everything else, but it fits the broader pattern: volatility alongside loyalty, excess alongside moments of responsibility.

Marriage, Jealousy, and Volatility

His personal relationships followed a similar pattern.

In November 1958, he married Ewa Kwaśniewska, a model associated with the Telimena Fashion House and sometimes described as a “Polish Brigitte Bardot.” The relationship was intense from the beginning, and their son was born the following year, tying them together even as the marriage was already becoming unstable. Accounts describe Frykowski as deeply jealous and prone to violence over minor perceived slights. Director Henryk Kluba later recalled seeing him physically attack his wife in public. The relationship collapsed within a few years.

His second marriage, to Agnieszka Osiecka, placed him even more firmly within the cultural elite. Surrounded by composers, writers, and filmmakers, he lived in an environment that actively produced lasting work. Yet the relationship itself lasted less than six months. Osiecka later reflected that she had mistaken flirtation for something deeper, describing Frykowski as someone with a rare ability to draw people in and create the sense of a richer, more meaningful connection than actually existed.

What Was Left Out of Frykowski’s Story

For all the attention given to Frykowski, most English-language accounts focus almost entirely on the final year of his life, when he was living in Hollywood at the height of its late-1960s excess. That version is easy to tell: a “playboy,” drifting through a world of parties and indulgence. But it’s also incomplete.

He had come from a very different environment. Communist Poland offered far less freedom of expression, far tighter social constraints, and a life shaped by expectation and structure. Before Hollywood, Frykowski had been educated, employed, and embedded in a functioning business world. He had worked. He had responsibilities.

Seen in that context, his time in Los Angeles looks less like a lifelong pattern and more like a phase—a period of excess following years of restriction. That doesn’t excuse his behaviour, and it doesn’t turn him into something he wasn’t. But it does make the usual portrayal feel shallow.

Once you look at the full arc of his life, it becomes harder to dismiss him as simply a “playboy” or a waster. He was someone who had already lived a structured, productive life, who moved into a different world, and who may well have moved on from it again.

That possibility is almost entirely absent from the way his story is told.

And that absence says as much about the story being told as it does about Frykowski himself.

Krzysztof Komeda wrote one of the most haunting pieces of film music of the 1960s — the lullaby from Rosemary’s Baby. Within months of its release, he was dead. In Poland, he composed music for films such as Knife in the Water, directed by Roman Polański, where his restrained score helped define the film’s psychological tone, and for short works like Mammals, where his music shaped atmosphere with minimalism and precision. These collaborations established the partnership that would take him to Hollywood.

By the time he arrived in Los Angeles, Komeda was not an unknown composer trying to break in — he was already an established artist bringing a distinctly European sensibility into an industry that valued mood and control. From the outside, everything pointed to success: Beverly Hills, major productions, and proximity to the centre of the film world. But the environment around him was unstable — heavy drinking, long nights, and a shifting social circle that didn’t always hold together beneath the surface.

A Generation Marked by War

To understand the people around him, it helps to look at the generation he belonged to. This was a generation shaped by war. In Poland, the occupation had been particularly brutal. Figures such as Oskar Dirlewanger — the “Butcher of Warsaw” — became synonymous with extreme violence during the Warsaw Uprising.

Even for those who did not directly witness such events, the effects were everywhere. Violence and instability were part of the environment in which people grew up. It doesn’t explain what happened to Komeda, but it does help explain the world in which these relationships and decisions were taking place.

A Man Not Entirely Free

Komeda’s situation in the United States was never entirely straightforward. He remained tied to Poland through financial and administrative obligations, including debts to Pagart, the state agency that controlled artists working abroad. These systems governed travel, income, and professional activity. Failure to return could be interpreted as defection, with consequences not just for him but for those close to him. His wife, Zofia, may have faced restrictions or financial penalties if he failed to return or settle his obligations.

“Not a planned emigration, but an escape.”

That pressure sits quietly in the background of everything that follows.

The Accident That Wasn’t Taken Seriously

One night in late December 1968, after drinking with writer Marek Hłasko, Komeda fell and hit his head.

As described by Roman Polański:

“He showed up at Paramount looking awful, with two black eyes and a bump the size of an egg on his forehead… he’d fallen and hurt himself quite badly… Hłasko had picked him up using a fireman’s lift… then dropped him, injuring him even more.”

Despite the visible injuries, what followed was not urgency but silence.

“The reason was simple. After all, what if the tabloid press found out?! … When Roman Polański… asked what had happened, Krzysztof… spoke only about a drunken escapade… And nothing more for the next two months.”

For weeks, the incident was reduced to something trivial. That decision would prove critical.

Misdiagnosis, Delay — and the Wrong Treatment

In the weeks that followed, Komeda’s condition began to change. He complained of headaches, confusion, and a growing sense that something was wrong. But these symptoms were interpreted as flu — likely Hong Kong flu, which was circulating at the time. He was treated accordingly, including with aspirin, a standard response, but one that can worsen internal bleeding after head trauma.

Crucially, the earlier accident does not appear to have been clearly communicated to doctors. What followed was not a single mistake but a chain of small, reasonable assumptions built on incomplete information. By the time the connection was made, valuable time had already been lost.

Confusion, Proximity — and Control

During this period, Wojciech Frykowski became increasingly involved in Komeda’s situation. The two men were close — Komeda had been a witness at his wedding — but accounts suggest Frykowski arrived in Los Angeles with very different priorities.

“He arrived in LA in mid-August 1968… He was looking for work and contacts… He hoped for big money… He began to hustle, including with the drug dealers. But no one knew about this, including Krzysztof… Frykowski literally stuck with him…”

As Komeda’s condition worsened, Frykowski remained nearby. He declared himself next of kin, moved into his room, used his chequebook, and drove his car, which was later returned damaged.

“Alarmed by this bizarre situation, Marek Niziński notified Komeda’s lawyer, Wally Wolf, who seized the hotel and demanded the return of his car and the confiscated, well-used chequebook.”

Control was reasserted, but the situation had already become unstable.

Zofia’s Return — and a Critical Decision

When Zofia arrived back in the United States, she found Komeda in a coma. The reality was far worse than she had been told. What followed was a rapid effort to bring him back to Poland, involving lawyers, the Polish consulate, and borrowed money to cover the journey.

The decision was not purely medical.

“She practically fled… fearing he would die in America — and she would be left to pay the debt.”

At the same time, she appears to have believed that treatment in Poland offered his best chance of survival.

There is one moment from Komeda’s final days that stands out — not because it proves anything, but because of how unsettling it feels when read back.

Those around him described a series of strange, involuntary reactions. His expression would shift without warning. Tears would appear. His fingers moved restlessly across the sheets. There were quiet sounds — not words, but something close to them. At times, he seemed to respond to touch, as if trying to meet it halfway.

As one account records:

“Both Zofia and visiting friends mentioned sudden symptoms… uncontrolled, random, impulsive reflexes… shifting expressions, tears, wandering fingers… quiet moans… A few days after surgery, when the lullaby from Rosemary’s Baby was played, he suddenly jumped to a sitting position… only for a few seconds. ‘Muscle stress,’ Dr. Gabor concluded. Zofia disagreed. She believed he could hear, understand, and was trying to communicate. But he did not speak.”

It’s easy to see why this moment has taken on a life of its own. The idea of a composer responding to his own music, in that state, feels almost too symbolic — too precise to ignore. But moments like this can also be explained.

In cases of severe brain injury, patients can exhibit sudden, reflexive movements. External stimuli — including sound — can trigger brief physical responses that appear purposeful, even when they are not. To those watching, especially those who want to believe there is still awareness, those reactions can feel meaningful.

That tension sits at the centre of the moment. Was it reflex, as the doctor suggested? Or something closer to recognition, as Zofia believed?

The answer is probably less dramatic than either version suggests.

A Journey He Didn’t Survive

“Krzysztof Komeda passed away on April 23, 1969, the third day after arriving in Poland. On Wednesday, a few minutes before 2 p.m. He didn't make it to the surgery scheduled for Thursday. While still at Midway Hospital, he contracted pneumonia. By the time he left the hospital, it was bilateral, but this information wasn't included in his medical records. Doctors only discovered this in a London hospital, where he spent the night after his transatlantic flight. Too late. Three months in a coma, misdiagnosed and improperly treated, plagued by illness. Emaciated, extremely weakened, and immune-depleted. It was too late for anything, anything.”

By the time Komeda was transported, he was already critically ill. It later emerged that he had developed bilateral pneumonia — something not identified until a stop in London. In that condition, moving him across the Atlantic may have reduced any remaining chance of recovery.

Three days after arriving in Poland, he died.

Not a Conspiracy — But a Chain of Events

What emerges is not a hidden plot, but something more difficult to confront. A serious injury that was visible but not treated as urgent, a condition that was misread because the full context wasn’t known, and information that was softened, withheld, or simply misunderstood. Decisions were made under pressure — financial, personal, and political — and each one, on its own, made a kind of sense. The problem was that they were being made without the full picture. No single moment explains what happened, but each moment led to the next, and by the time that chain became visible, it was already too late.

Final Thought

There is a temptation to see meaning in the way this story ends. A composer lying in a hospital bed, reacting — however briefly — to the music he created. It feels deliberate, symbolic, as if the story is trying to resolve itself. But most of what happened to Krzysztof Komeda does not resolve neatly. The injury was real, the symptoms were real, and the confusion around him was real. What shaped the outcome was not one decisive act, but a series of small decisions made by people working with partial information. At every stage, people acted on what they thought they understood — and it wasn’t enough.

His death also sits in a wider sequence of events. Just four months later, the Tate–LaBianca murders would take place, bringing a series of tragedies into sharp focus around Roman Polański and his circle. It’s tempting to draw a line through those events, to impose a pattern on them. But in Komeda’s case, what remains is something simpler, and more unsettling: not a pattern, but a chain.

Recently, I came across a set of letters attributed to Witold Kaczanowski, preserved within correspondence linked to novelist Jerzy Kosiński and held in the Yale archives.

The version available today comes via a transcription published on MansonBlog, where the material has been professionally translated. The letters themselves are wide-ranging, offering a snapshot of the atmosphere surrounding Cielo Drive in the weeks leading up to the murders. Among the many details, one in particular stood out.

The Letter: A Claimed “Experiment”

In one passage, Witold describes Wojciech Frykowski announcing a plan to remain on mescaline for ten days:

“4 days before the murder, Wojtek came to the gallery and announced he is doing an experiment: he decided to be on permanent mescaline for 10 days while still using cocaine and smoking marijuana. He also didn’t shy away from vodka, which, surprisingly, he hadn’t touched in the last few months at all. Both he and Gibbi were practically unconscious already by midnight.
There is no doubt he recently hated Gibbi with all his heart, but without her, he wouldn’t be able to buy drugs. So Gibbi pushed that crap into him to keep him close. She, of course, fell in love with him some two months ago when he started to fuck her, normal.”

At first glance, this suggests a short-term “experiment” taking place in the days immediately before the murders.

It’s also worth noting the tone of this passage. Witold describes Frykowski as hating “Gibbi” while simultaneously relying on her for access to drugs, and frames the relationship in blunt, transactional terms. Taken at face value, it’s a striking and deeply unflattering portrayal — but it’s also a subjective one. This is Witold’s interpretation of a volatile situation, written after the fact, and it likely reflects personal bias, frustration, or hindsight as much as it does verifiable detail about what was actually happening.

Witold doesn’t just describe a single episode, however. Elsewhere in the same correspondence, he presents a much broader picture of escalating drug use:

“I was a daily witness of him getting deeper in. In fact, for the last two months he was in such a state that you wouldn’t recognize him. He could not refrain from using cocaine and mescaline with LSD. All of this is a stunning mix, which changed his mentality, physiognomy and most of all, his eyes...
…The worst was that he was picking on everyone, offended them, threatened his guests with a gun a few times a day. The reality and delusions blended into one...
…I met all those men who used to come there because I was there almost every day, continually painting, even though there were dozens, sometimes even several dozen drugged people around me.”

Taken together, these passages point not just to a single experiment, but to a longer pattern of heavy, multi-drug use in the weeks leading up to the murders. That context is important — but it also raises a question. If this level of instability was ongoing, how does that fit with the more structured and coordinated behaviour described on August 8?

A Parallel Claim in the Press

A similar claim appears in contemporary reporting from Tom Harrigan, who told reporters that Frykowski was in the middle of an eight-day mescaline experiment when he last saw him on August 7. This detail is often simplified into the idea that the victims were “on a drug trip when they were slain,” but Harrigan’s statement is tied to a specific point in time. The murders took place in the early hours of August 9, meaning his account refers to Frykowski’s condition at least a day and a half earlier, not at the time of the murders the murders themselves.

The Night Before

There are also reports placing the group at Jay Sebring’s house the night before the murders, before returning to Cielo. This is sometimes used to dismiss Harrigan’s account, but it doesn’t necessarily do that. If they returned to Cielo later, he could still have seen them earlier in the evening. More importantly, even if mescaline was used that night, it places it earlier in the timeline, not at the time of the murders themselves.

A Timeline That Doesn’t Quite Fit

When you place Harrigan’s account alongside the Witold letter, a discrepancy appears. Harrigan’s timeline suggests Frykowski was already several days into the experiment by August 7, while Witold’s account places the start only a few days earlier. Both point in the same direction, but they don’t agree on when it began. Once that starting point becomes uncertain, the question of what state Frykowski was in on August 8 becomes uncertain as well.

What the Forensics Actually Show

There is clear evidence that drugs were part of the environment at Cielo Drive. Toxicology findings show that both Wojciech Frykowski and Abigail Folger had MDA in their system, detected in urine at autopsy. I’ve linked the autopsy reports below for reference. This confirms relatively recent drug use, but not the exact timing or level of intoxication.

What is notably absent is any equivalent confirmation for mescaline. No documented mescaline results appear in the autopsy reports, SID findings, or progress reports. While testing was possible in 1969, it was not routine and often required a specific request. As a result, mescaline remains unconfirmed in the forensic record and rests on witness accounts rather than laboratory findings.

Different Drugs, Different Effects

This distinction matters. MDA tends to be stimulating, increasing energy, movement, and responsiveness. Mescaline, by contrast, is a classic psychedelic associated with altered perception, disorganisation, and inward focus, particularly at higher doses. If someone were in a heavy mescaline state, you would expect that to affect how they move and respond to events around them.

What Happened at Cielo

The evidence from the scene shows sustained, goal-directed behaviour. Frykowski and Folger attempted to flee, moving across multiple areas of the property, with several collapse points, and made repeated efforts to escape, even after serious injury. That doesn’t rule out drug use, but it doesn’t clearly align with the idea of a deeply disorganising psychedelic state.

So What Can We Actually Say?

The Witold letter is important because it points to a wider pattern of heavy drug use around Cielo Drive in the weeks leading up to the murders. It reinforces the idea that mescaline use was being discussed, and possibly experimented with, within that environment.

But when you compare it to Harrigan’s statement, the timelines don’t align cleanly. And when both accounts are set against the forensic record and the documented behaviour of the victims, the picture becomes less certain.

There is evidence of drug use in general. There are accounts referencing mescaline. But there is no clear confirmation that mescaline was present — or active — at the time of the murders themselves.

A More Likely Scenario?

A more straightforward explanation is that mescaline may have been used in the days before, but not at the time of the murders. The timing may have been misremembered or compressed, and by August 8, different substances — such as MDA — may have been involved instead. That interpretation fits the available evidence more closely without requiring a continuous mescaline state.

Final Thought

The discovery of the Witold letter doesn’t settle the question, but it sharpens it. There is a difference between evidence of drug use in general and evidence of a specific drug at a specific moment. And in a case where so much depends on interpretation, that distinction matters.

The most detailed descriptions of the attack come from the killers themselves — particularly Susan Atkins and Charles 'Tex' Watson.

But when you read the actual trial transcripts, their testimony raises some troubling questions.

Witnesses describe:

• victims who “didn’t look like people”
• Sharon Tate appeared like a “store mannequin”
• voices sounding like an “IBM machine”
• reality feeling like “Disneyland”
• hazy memories and blackouts.

Over the years, I’ve read through large sections of the Tate–LaBianca trial transcripts, including Susan Atkins’ testimony in full. One thing kept standing out: the accounts of what happened inside the Tate house don’t read like clear eyewitness testimony. They are fragmented, contradictory, and in some cases openly unreliable.

That becomes a serious problem when you realise how few people actually described what happened inside.

According to her own testimony, Linda Kasabian remained outside. Patricia Krenwinkel has never given a full account of the interior events. That leaves the accepted narrative largely dependent on Susan Atkins and Tex Watson.

Distorted Perception

One of the first things that stands out in Susan Atkins’ testimony is how she describes the victims. She states that everything felt strange and that the people inside the house did not even look like people. This is not a normal eyewitness description. It suggests that her perception of reality itself was altered at the time.

“A Store Mannequin”

When describing Sharon Tate, Atkins’ language becomes even more striking. She says she did not relate to her as a person at all, but as a “store mannequin,” and even describes her voice as sounding like an IBM machine. This is a complete detachment from normal human recognition, both visually and emotionally.

“A Thing in a Car”

The same pattern appears when she describes Steven Parent. Rather than recognising him as a person, she refers to him as “a thing in a car.” Again, this suggests a breakdown in perception, where human beings are no longer being processed as human.

Reality Felt Artificial

At one point, Atkins describes the entire scene as looking like “Disneyland.” This is consistent with what is often described as derealization, where the environment itself feels artificial or unreal. Combined with her earlier descriptions, it suggests that her experience of the event was heavily distorted.

LSD and Memory

Atkins also admits she was under the influence of LSD that night. She states that the details of the event are “hazy and foggy,” which directly raises questions about the reliability of her memory.

Testimony Reconstruction

During questioning, Atkins acknowledges that diagrams and visual aids influenced her answers, suggesting that parts of her testimony may have been reconstructed during interviews.

“I Could Not Tell You Which Part Was True”

When discussing her earlier grand jury testimony, Atkins admits that only parts of it were true, but that she cannot say which parts. She even states that she does not remember what she told the grand jury at all.

Tex Watson: Memory Gaps and Blackouts

In the testimony of Charles ‘Tex’ Watson, similar problems appear. Watson describes experiencing blackouts, meaning that parts of the night are missing from his memory. Throughout his testimony, he repeatedly states that he does not remember or cannot recall specific details.

Uncertainty About Key Details

Even when discussing major physical details, such as the rope around Sharon Tate, Watson says:

“Not that I could see.”

What’s particularly interesting here is how Vincent Bugliosi responds. He immediately follows up with a much stronger suggestion — effectively jumping to the idea of the rope being placed later. But that isn’t what Watson said. He simply states that he did not see it.

This creates a gap between what the witness actually recalls and how that detail is interpreted during questioning, and raises questions about how certain elements of the narrative became fixed.

Denial of Key Narrative Details

Watson also directly challenges several of the most well-known elements of the accepted narrative. Under questioning, he denies saying “I’m the devil, here to do the devil’s work,” and does not describe entering the house by cutting a screen and climbing through a window. Instead, he states that they walked through the gate and entered through the door.

These details are often presented as central to the sequence of events, yet they are not clearly supported by Watson’s own account in court. In some cases, they are introduced during questioning rather than described independently by him.

This again highlights the same underlying issue: the version of events that has become widely accepted does not always align cleanly with what is actually stated in the testimony.

Identity and Confusion

Watson also makes a statement suggesting a breakdown in identity within the group, saying they were all Charles Manson. This raises further questions about how events were experienced and interpreted in the moment.

The Problem With the Narrative

When you step back and look at the testimony as a whole, the issue becomes difficult to ignore. The people describing what happened inside the house repeatedly say they could not clearly see, could not clearly remember, or did not experience events in a normal way.

They describe victims who did not look human, voices that did not sound real, and an environment that felt artificial. They admit to hazy, fragmented memory, blackouts, and, in some cases, an inability to distinguish truth from falsehood in their own statements.

At the same time, key details of the accepted narrative — how entry was made, what was said, what was seen — are either denied, uncertain, or only appear when introduced during questioning.

This leaves us in a difficult position. The widely accepted version of events depends heavily on testimony that is, by the witnesses’ own admission, incomplete, influenced, and at times unreliable.

That does not mean there is no truth in these accounts. But it does mean the narrative is not as solid or as clearly established as it is often presented.

And if that is the case, then the most important question is not what we think happened inside the Tate house — but how much of it we can actually say we know with confidence.

Possible Explanations

There are several factors that could help explain why the testimony appears this way. Psychedelic drug use, particularly LSD, can produce distorted perception and detachment from reality. Psychological states such as derealization can occur under extreme stress or trauma, causing people and surroundings to appear unreal. Combined with memory disruption, including blackouts, this could result in accounts that are inconsistent or incomplete.

Conclusion

The Tate murders remain one of the most well-known crimes of the twentieth century. But when we return to the original transcripts, the picture becomes less clear. The people who described what happened inside the house repeatedly say they could not clearly see, remember, or fully understand what was happening.

And that leaves us with a difficult but important question:

Do we really know what happened inside the Tate house?

For more than fifty years, the Manson murders have been explained through a single dominant narrative. According to the prosecution’s theory, Charles Manson manipulated his followers into committing random killings as part of an apocalyptic race war he called “Helter Skelter.”

But when you return to the earliest police reports and investigative files, a different picture begins to emerge. Instead of a purely ideological crime, investigators repeatedly encountered evidence pointing toward something far more mundane—and far more dangerous: drugs, money, and violent disputes inside the Hollywood drug trade.

During my early research into the case, I began examining references to a group of Canadian dealers operating in Los Angeles in 1969. What initially looked like a minor detail quickly turned into a rabbit hole. The same names kept appearing in police reports and witness accounts: William Doyle, Tom Harrigan, and Pic Dawson. Alongside them was another recurring element—MDA, the synthetic psychedelic sometimes called “the love drug.”

Looking closely at this network raises an uncomfortable question that was largely ignored during the trial: how much of the violence surrounding the case was connected to the drug economy operating in Hollywood at the time?

The Drug Scene Around Cielo Drive

In the months leading up to the murders, the house at 10050 Cielo Drive, where Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski lived, functioned as a hub for the Hollywood counterculture. Witnesses described frequent parties between April and July 1969, where actors, musicians, dealers, and hangers-on moved freely through the house.

Drug use was common in this environment. Substances circulating through the scene reportedly included cocaine, LSD, marijuana, and MDA. The social world surrounding the victims was far from the innocent gathering place sometimes portrayed in later retellings. Instead, police reports describe a party scene intertwined with drug dealing and international connections.

Two figures who appear repeatedly in these reports were William Doyle and Tom Harrigan, newcomers from Toronto who arrived in Los Angeles in early 1969. According to police sources, they initially stayed with Cass Elliot, bringing with them a large quantity of cocaine.

The amount reportedly alarmed Elliot—around two pounds—and she asked them to leave rather than risk having that much narcotics stored in her home. Doyle and Harrigan relocated to 1459 North Kings Road, where they began building contacts within the film industry and selling cocaine. According to the police report, the pair sold roughly $6,000 worth of cocaine during their first month in Los Angeles.

The Houseboy Who Stole $6,000

One of the strangest episodes recorded in the police files involves an eighteen-year-old houseboy named Terence Cookley, who was living with Doyle and Harrigan at the Kings Road address.

Cookley reportedly spent an entire month using their cocaine supply and moving through the Hollywood nightlife scene while high. Then, in March 1969, he did something remarkable: he stole $6,000 in cash from the dealers and fled Los Angeles.

Even in 1969, that was a considerable amount of money. Cookley reportedly spent the stolen cash partying in nightclubs and tipping waiters generously. Eventually, Doyle and Harrigan tracked him down in Stockton, California, where they assaulted him and warned him to keep quiet.

The story did not end there. According to the police report, they later abducted Cookley outside The Whisky A Go Go nightclub, drove him into the Hollywood Hills, and Doyle beat him with a hammer handle.

Police eventually took a report, but Cookley gave misleading statements, and no charges were filed. In his account, he described Doyle and Harrigan as extremely violent men who might even be hired killers.

The most puzzling aspect of the story is its outcome. If these men were truly that dangerous, why did they allow someone who had stolen thousands of dollars from them to walk away alive? The episode illustrates just how chaotic and unpredictable the drug environment surrounding these individuals had become.

The Canadians and the Hollywood Network

Doyle and Harrigan were not operating in isolation. They quickly became embedded in the same social network surrounding the Cielo Drive house.

One of the key links between the Canadians and the wider Hollywood scene was Pic Dawson, an actor who arrived from New York and moved into the Woodstock house in early July 1969. The Woodstock property was not just another party location. It was a house rented by Abigail Folger, although she had been spending much of her time staying with Voytek Frykowski at the Polanski residence on Cielo Drive. Dawson was closely associated with Doyle and Harrigan and was widely described as a drug dealer operating within the same social circle. His presence in Folger’s house places him directly inside the network surrounding the eventual victims rather than on the margins of it.

Dawson also had personal connections that tied him to the broader counterculture scene. At one point, he reportedly dated Cass Elliot, linking him to the same music and Hollywood circles that Doyle and Harrigan had already entered when they first arrived in Los Angeles.

Seen together, the names appearing in the police files—Doyle, Harrigan, Dawson, Frykowski, Folger, and others—begin to look less like isolated stories and more like parts of a single overlapping network. What initially appears to be a loose counterculture party scene begins to resemble something closer to a small drug economy operating within a tight social circle, where disputes over money, territory, or bad drugs could quickly escalate.

In drug culture, a burn usually means a deal has gone wrong. Someone sells fake drugs, delivers a bad batch, or disappears with money. Retaliation can be severe.

Several accounts suggested that bad or contaminated MDA had begun circulating in Hollywood shortly before the murders. Stories from within the scene described violent reprisals connected to these disputes, including one bizarre episode where William Doyle was reportedly tied to a tree, drugged, and sexually humiliated as punishment for a bad deal.

While details vary depending on the source, these stories illustrate how volatile the drug environment had already become.

One detail from the official investigation stands out. Toxicology reports confirmed that MDA was present in the bloodstream of both Abigail Folger and Voytek Frykowski at the time of their deaths. This confirms that the drug was circulating within the group immediately before the killings.

Tex Watson and the Question of Motive

Within this environment, Charles “Tex” Watson emerges as a particularly ambiguous figure. Some accounts suggest Watson interacted with multiple factions in the drug scene, raising the possibility that he was navigating overlapping criminal networks rather than acting purely as a follower of Manson’s ideology.

Manson himself occasionally hinted at this dynamic. In interviews, he suggested he had sent people to “collect money” or deal with disputes—language that sounds less like cult doctrine and more like the enforcement side of a drug operation.

Drugs, Psychosis, and the Trial

Another factor largely absent from the courtroom narrative was the extraordinary level of drug use among many of the people involved. LSD, MDA, cocaine, and amphetamines were widely used throughout the scene.

Years later, Susan Atkins admitted she had lied in court, while Tex Watson eventually suffered a severe psychological breakdown, dropping to an extremely low weight and becoming nearly catatonic in prison. Despite this, only Watson was seriously considered for an insanity defence.

The broader possibility that drug-induced psychosis played a role in the crimes was never fully explored during the trials.

A Story Still Full of Gaps

The Manson murders remain one of the most documented crimes in American history. Yet some of the most revealing details appear not in the courtroom transcripts but in the early investigative reports.

Those documents show a world where drugs, money, and violence were deeply intertwined with the people surrounding the victims. They reveal a network of dealers, musicians, actors, and counterculture figures who move among the same houses and parties across Hollywood.

But as the investigation progressed, the focus of law enforcement increasingly narrowed. Once police identified the Manson Family and began documenting their activities, associates, and movements, the scale of that investigation alone became enormous. Investigators suddenly had a group with dozens of members, multiple crime scenes, and a growing list of witnesses and confessions.

Against that backdrop, other leads appear to have received far less attention.
