you are a person who finally decides to be seen.

You decide that now it is time to stop waiting to be the most ideal version of yourself to do something vulnerable.

You have been thinking about this for years. Maybe longer. The idea of yourself making something, putting it out into the world, and stepping into the infinite room of the public domain.

You have rehearsed it so many times, half heartedly and also vividly, at work, in the shower, and as you slip from conscious thoughts to dreams at night. There is always a better time. There is always a more finished idea of you waiting somewhere in the near future, more certain, more ready, more whatever it is you think you need to be before you are allowed to begin.

And then one day — for whatever reason, boredom, desperation, grief, existential dread, or a mixture of cheap wine and an overheated weed pen — you just do it.

And the room fills up.

And some of them love you.

And some of them do not.

Some people develop opinions about you that would suggest they have known you intimately for years and survived childhood together.

One evening, an anonymous stranger sends you a direct message:

“toes very long its okay I don’t body shame”

You wince and do not respond.

Several minutes later they follow up:

“japanese 😍?”

The first word in your bio says Korean. I had sworn to myself that this was the year I would transform my life. I would become disciplined and fully dedicated to one theme for the whole year, and use that as the focusing parameters in which I would live my life by to release myself from the prison of inaction. My theme was simple: stop being dictated by shame.

I remember being stoned and delusional, hyping myself up at 3am about why starting TikTok of all things could be the perfect litmus test in confronting shame regularly, exposing myself to what could very well be the most embarrassing, novel endeavour of the year: trying to build an audience on social media.

I started a fresh account and gave myself a new identity, baby — all lowercase, of course. My emoji of choice, the pink bow 🎀. It was a call toward innocence, towards playfulness, towards some quality of coquettish girlishness I felt myself yearning for as I attempted to leave years of isolation, missteps, failure and relentless adult survival behind.

When you start from nothing, you serve an audience of one and walk onto a stage looking out into complete and total oblivion. Very often, you begin by mimicking people you admire — trying to excavate a singular voice through imitation, hoping that someone else’s form will teach you the shape of your own. Maybe, as time passes, you hit a stride of consistency. You build yourself up to your first hundred, first thousand, first ten thousand followers. Desire and hunger accumulate in the sea of competing digital paraphernalia. You try to locate more of that sacred wellspring of inspiration, to eventually reach the inflection point of saying the thing that only you can say. You remind yourself, often, why you started. What your goals are. To relish the process.

But in the back of your mind, you wonder what this is doing to you. How it might affect people in your life. How exposure to opportunity and luck can so easily be conflated with artificial forms of gratification. Whether you are building something real or simply performing the idea of building something real.

Something no one told me is that one day, once you reach what you thought you were looking for — once you build your confidence, grow an audience, hit velocity, and random strikes of virality — that original call toward innocence would summon something more brutal and mystifying. You can summon, without fully understanding it, a filled arena.

This is the thing about the human gaze at scale: it is spectacular and tender and violent, all at once. When you choose to create and potentially become an object of consumption — whether you are building presence as a writer, artist, small business owner, comedian, fashion savant, mukbanger, multi-hyphenate creative, self-help guru, climate activist, gamer or true crime aficionado — you choose, for a brief moment, to fill the viewer’s total existence with yourself. At times this feels like total liberation. At others, it feels dangerous.

The gaze that meets you is not singular. It is multitudes of separate encounters, each one fragmentary, each arriving with its own private cargo of projection and desire and praise and grievance.

A few months into starting my account, a large account on Twitter reposted my video, Tiktok is training you to leave the people who love you. It circulated and went viral on other platforms. I woke to messages from numerous acquaintances sending it back to me. Overnight, I went from an obscure account to being found and known by people I knew in real life.

I read the comments and felt my heart race faster and faster. Anonymous comments writing jeering analyses of my face, level of attractiveness, rating me from 1-10. Comments about how on point I was, and how reckless and stupid I was. There was a thread about my supposed plastic surgery, and what work I needed and what work I shouldn’t have gotten (thanks for the allegations I guess). Later that day, I got ecstatic messages from women in my professional life and friends from back home who saw it saying: GO OFF QUEEN!, OKAAYYY VIRALITY, IS THAT NAOMI D’AMELIO? or CASH THE FUCK IN BITCH.

There were also, months later, in various weeks: people asking for my home address. Intricately essayed descriptions of why I was ugly. People asking for fully nude pictures. And also, for six consecutive days, DMs from multiple accounts saying that I looked like the one and only, Nicolas Cage.

I have never had a truly public, doxxed online presence. I’ve never had more than a few hundred Instagram followers. I have always been a deeply sensitive, insecure, private individual, living online as a quiet dweller, never going so far as to leave a comment — in my entire life. You sometimes hear public individuals talk about what it’s like to be constantly perceived, or receive hate, or live a life fraught between public and private life. But as a passive viewer it’s unfathomable to consider what that really feels like. Nothing in my prior life had equipped me for the experience of having my existence considered, partitioned, and distributed across a comment section by a few thousand or sometimes millions of people who had watched 20 seconds of me.

The gaze will find the unfinished places in you and sit in them, uninvited. Regardless if the criticism is accurate or holds truth, exposure at volume is disorienting in ways you did not ask for.

The moment you step into the room, you cannot un-step. The version of you that existed only privately, only in potential, only safe in the future tense — that version is gone. What replaces her is messier, more contested, more visceral, more alive; More accountable to the present tense you are actually living in. You have gifted a delicious part of you that now belongs to the world.

I did not anticipate that this would feel, at first, almost entirely like loss.

ii. the beauty

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" of being seen and building an audience has happened.

I’ve experienced being disliked, criticized, misconstrued, and demeaned by strangers; I’ve experienced being found by almost everyone I know in real life; I’ve been mocked about it by a close friend and forced myself to laugh through it; I’ve had periods where I struggled to gain traction, or worked on an idea for a few days only to get absolutely torched and dragged in the comments. And guess what? It didn’t end me. Instead, it slowly catalyzed me to start trusting in my own point of view and selfhood for the very first time.

I hope to share a nuanced perspective not to frighten anyone away from what can be a confusing and occasionally harrowing exercise in building the stamina to be seen. I say it to dismantle the omnipotent power you give your fears. I say it to demolish the architecture of anxiety, false rationalizations, and shame that you reside in, caging you from ever doing anything worth sharing.

After months of thickening my emotional skin to expect these little stings, I realized that it is futile — and quite honestly degrading and boring — to live a life imprisoned by the perception of others.

Like so many women, I have always been a desperate, hopeless people pleaser. I’ve always been avoidant of confrontation at all costs, and have even denigrated myself into horrific, life-altering situations because I simply wasn’t willing to disappoint another person and tell them no. To fully own what I projected into the world online, I felt that part of me that would always cower to judgement begin to wane, as I stepped into my own expressions both online and in real life with growing gallantry.

If there is one thing that you fully own in this life, it is your own experience. It is yours, and only yours. And often, living a life that is truthful to your deepest desires means developing an absurd willingness to be misunderstood.

I had far too many languid days of dull comfort, and ultimately, soul-crushing invisibility. And I know you have too.

When you share something and your worst fears are brought to fruition, a part of your ego dies. A part of the fantasy of future expectation you’ve built up for so long collapses. The part of your self-image that existed in embarrassment, the voice that constantly told you no or it wont work out, dies because you succumb to the realization your worst fears around perception were all just an egocentric mirage in the first place. And once you experience them in all their anti-climactic glory, you realize they don’t actually hold the governing power you think they do.

Being seen verified my suspicion that the tolerance to be seen is the practice of being yourself. Build it long enough, and one day you realize they were always the same thing. And as someone who has spent an ungodly, unhealthy amount of time alone, I will tell you that you don't just find yourself in solitude. You find yourself in the act of being witnessed.

We think self-knowledge is a private project — something you build in silence, in journals, in the long careful examination of your own interior. But the self is not a fixed object waiting to be discovered. It is relational. It comes into focus in the eyes of other people. Other people are not mirrors. A mirror only returns what you bring. They are refractions. The same light, bent. And sometimes what comes back is a colour of you that you had no idea you were carrying.

I am reminded by the great artists of my life, that the act of creation is a gesture of one’s own consciousness. The act of sharing it — of being seen for it — is the act of serving that consciousness to the world.

Amy Winehouse, Toni Morrison, Francisco Goya, Tracy Emin, Bill Viola, Viola Davis, Nina Simone, Alexander McQueen — what they share is the willingness to be fully legible. To let a part of their interior life become a thing the world could touch. And what I found, is that this is a duty you owe yourself. In the repeated act of making and releasing, the obscure, untraceable marks you leave by doing so, have a strange tendency to find their way home.

A thought forms in you, raw and barely shaped. You articulate it badly in your medium of choice, then better, then well enough to put out. And it leaves. You have no idea where it goes, what shape it takes inside someone else’s mind, what other thought it lands beside. And then one day, you find it actually has resonance. Someone is stirred by you, and the mark — which seemed abstract and maybe pointless — suddenly has luminosity.

Five minutes of me talking to myself in my room, and I will never know the precise shape of the effect. And yet — surprising shimmers of it keep finding me. Someone telling me that I’ve shifted something in their mind towards optimism, even if it’s just by one degree. Someone expressing that something I’ve shared was the push that made them finally make them move to the city they’d always dreamed of moving to. Someone tells me they’ve landed a dream job they never thought they could have, by accepting they do not need to suffer in order to achieve big things.

These pivotal moments eclipse any murmurs of trolls and contempt.

The other thing I did not anticipate was the people from my past. Friends I had not spoken to in years surfaced from unexpected corners of my contacts list. People who had known me as one version of myself recognised, across a decade of silence, something continuous. What I had braced for was the embarrassment of being found. What I encountered instead was awe-inducing warmth. Friends who re-entered my life with grace and excitement as if no time had passed at all. And the people who had known me longest, were not surprised by what they found. They had already known this was in me. That discovery undid me more than any of the rest of it. They knew that I had been this person the whole time, and they had simply waited.

iii. the essentiality

<a wrote about how through the act of naming all my dreams and writing them down, I quickly transformed obscure hopes into my current lived reality. A dream home, a meaningful career, financial stability, and a transformative social life. It was all anchored around the idea that: “The moment something exists in precise written detail, it stops being a dream…You have to say the specific thing. Imprecision is not humility. It is an obstruction.”

What I did not mention, was the dream that I purposefully missed to write down.

I have said publicly in jest, on TikTok, to over 600,000 people, without much difficulty: Sean Evans, the man who interviews celebrities while eating increasingly spicier chicken wings, is my ideal white male. I simply admire any white man that can handle that level of spice.

Here is something I could not say, for a long time, to anyone: I want to make art. I want to paint, to draw, to design. I have ideas I have been carrying for years, quietly, untouched, in the same careful way you carry something you are afraid to ruin by actually using. I have posted a lot of videos about cultural commentary and becoming the person you want to be. I have not once, in any of them, said the word artist in relation to myself. The artworks in this article are mine, so this is a start.

Somewhere between finishing school and entering what the world calls adult life, I built walls around my deepest desire, that over the course of a decade, calcified into a formidable stone fortress. I didn’t think of it as loss at the time. I thought of it as necessary. I needed to get my shit together, make money, have a real career, and grow the fuck up. What I understand now in retrospect, is that I was atrophying my essence. The materials that made me, me. The part of me I know I really am if I had never been affected by the world and social expectations.

I asked myself: who would I be if I existed in total alignment with my own desires and purpose, unmoved by the fear of what people think? I tried to picture her clearly. How she spent her days. How she thought of herself. Who she surrounded herself with. How detached she was from the judgment of others, because she was already living a life anchored by self acceptance.

What is both fascinating and unsettling about this thought experiment is how I think of myself in that hypothetical as someone distinctly removed from who I am now. I know for certain that many of us think: we aren’t yet living aligned with our purpose, we aren’t yet acting on our dreams, we are still confused about what we want in life — so we cannot allow ourselves to be seen to embody this “higher self.”

It is tyranny, and really, slow torture to wait to be the idealised version of yourself before you begin to be seen. The logic goes: I will start when I am more certain, when I have lost some weight, or when I have something real to show. What this produces is not readiness. It is distance — an ever-widening gap between your present self and the perfected self on the pedestal, the one you have made so complete so that you can never quite reach them. The majority of us live in that gap. And do not do the thing.

To keep separating your present self from your ideal self is just another form of distancing yourself from your own life. The idealised version is not a final destination. She is a practice.

What TikTok — TikTok, of all places, an app synonymous with algorithmic brain rot and teenagers dancing to Renegade in front of iPhones on tripods — taught me, is that embodying my ideal self imperfectly, publicly, painfully, and repeatedly is not performance. It is rehearsal in excavating and becoming my truest self.

When I asked my peers — other creators whose work found me before I had any audience of my own. — if they had to publicly claim a version of themselves before believing it in private, they said:

“Publicly claiming my heart — my deepest values and beliefs — allowed me to step into and feel acceptance of my true inner voice. It’s been a symbiotic relationship: I practice my authenticity online, which in turn has kept me more accountable offline. If I want to feel like I’m challenging myself in the way I show up and explore ideas, ultimately this requires embracing that everything is changing all the time, you’ll never know if you don’t try…without some flops in service of growth and slay!” - Amber Akilla (DJ/Creative, and creator of slaynomics),

What these women are really describing is how visibility invites crystallisation. Identity is not discovered before expression. It is formed and evolved through expression. You can suspect something about yourself in private for years and never quite trust it. It stays vaporous, easy to doubt, and easy to take back. But live it out loud, in front of someone who sees it — and overtime it sets. You keep showing up as “the person,” and eventually, you can become them.

~

The gaze, for all its violence and beauty, has this clarifying and essential function: it makes you increasingly responsible to the person you have claimed to be.

I’ve shared online how I’m intentionally building a beautiful life, and miraculously, I am living it. It took me almost thirty years to write one honest sentence about wanting to create art, and finally, I’ve shared some of it and will be held accountable to make more.

If you’ve spent any amount of time with a real or digital audience, you’ll know that sometimes they can be exceedingly wise, hilarious, generous, loving, cruel — sometimes they’ll tell you you’re ugly, or look like Nicolas Cage, or body shame your feet — but very often, you’ll find they don’t know what the hell they are talking about. They are just people, like you. And they are ancillary, not central, to your creative act.

The audience is not the final authority. And when you walk into a room of spectators you will find glimmering refractions of yourself through countless other perspectives. Those perspectives are a gift, but they are not the measure of your contributions, your achievements, your fortitude, and sense of self. stopping. Heavy, violent bleeding. I had bled through tampons, pads and underwear many days — even bleeding through clothes in public, where once I bled so much in a seemingly unmoving bathroom line at a luxury department store that I watched it drip on the white marble floor.

It was the kind of bleeding that came seemingly out of nowhere, sending me to the GP who sent me to a gynaecologist who sent me to another specialist who said the word anaemia and offered me iron tablets, sending me home straight to my bathroom floor. I felt like my body was, quite literally, trying to exorcise itself. Of what, I didn’t know. The doctors couldn’t find a single physiological cause. They kept running tests, which kept coming back with zero answers. What they didn’t say, and what I eventually understood, was that the body is a ledger. It records what the mind refuses to acknowledge. And mine had been refusing for a long time.

That same year, I parted ways with a job I had fought so hard to get. One that had saliently promised me a work visa and instead, delivered a devastating slow-motion demolition of every hope I had been building in my mind for years. It was also during that time that I lost two significant friendships. I will save you the details out of respect for them, but each came as a successive sudden blow just as I was trying to make sense of how to orient myself and survive.

I was living in a studio so small a moth infestation had become a permanent fixture. There was nowhere to move anything, nowhere to treat anything, nowhere to escape it; in a neighbourhood where two stabbings had occurred on my street in the course of three months. I was, in the technical sense of the word, alone. Not just single or temporarily friendless but profoundly, architecturally alone, in a city I had dreamed of living in since childhood — a city that had, in two years of actual residence, given me almost none of what I had imagined.

London was supposed to be where my real life began. Every year before it had felt like a rehearsal, an anteroom, a form of waiting. I had moved there convinced that geography was the final variable, that the right city would unlock something in me that the wrong ones had suppressed. Instead, I found that I had simply exported my problems to a vastly more expensive postcode. I was the same person, still afraid of the same things, still making the same choices, only now I was also lonely, broke, finding moths in my food bowls and without the social infrastructure that had previously cushioned my more spectacular failures.

By the time Christmas arrived and I flew home to my parents, I was not so much a person as a collection of recent painful experiences looking for somewhere to put themselves. I regressed into a childlike, amorphous, untethered state almost immediately. I stayed up until three in the morning in my teenage bedroom, smoking an overheated weed pen and drinking red wine in the blue light of my laptop screen, trying to recover the numbness I had relied on for years before I had stopped. I was nearly thirty playing seventeen, and I knew it, and did it anyway. There is a guilty comfort in collapsing back into an earlier version of yourself. It is the comfort of a room that still fits, even when you are too big for it.

But then something shifted.

<a More like a frequency, a familiar energy returning. Something recognisable, something I had not felt in long enough that I had almost stopped expecting it. I had been reading, in the frantic and desperate way you read when you are looking for structure to impose on a formless period, about the Chinese astrological year. 2025 was the year of the Wood Snake. The Wood Snake, in that tradition, is the year of shedding: releasing what has grown too tight, what no longer fits the self you are becoming.

You do not choose to shed a skin. The skin simply becomes something you can no longer inhabit. My body had understood this before I did. For over a year, it had been shedding in the only language it knew, violently, without my permission, without a diagnosis that made sense. I had not chosen any of it. But perhaps that is the nature of shedding. It does not wait for you to be ready. And 2026, arriving behind it, was the year of the Fire Horse: ambitious acceleration, bold changes, the radical dismantling of whatever the previous years had left standing. I had spent a year being completely emptied. Physically, spiritually, financially, socially and existentially. The Fire Horse, I understood, was what came to run through the open space.

I am not someone who lives by astrology. But I am someone who has always needed myth, story, fantasy and ritual — a framework to make sense of life within. And when you are sitting in your childhood bedroom at the end of the worst year of your adult life, you take the one that is offered. What it gave me was not a prediction, but permission. Permission to read the preceding years as preparation rather than failure, as the necessary pressure before the release. Whether or not that reading was cosmically accurate is, I think, beside the point. It was accurate enough to move me.

On New Year’s Eve, as the year turned, I locked my bedroom door and spent four hours doing something I had tried before in a half-hearted, slightly mortified way and never properly committed to. I took out a notebook. And I wrote down, in full and specific and completely unselfconscious detail, everything I wanted.

<a desire. A belief that naming something precisely is a way of exposing yourself to its precise absence. Vague wanting is safer. If you have never fully articulated what you want, you can maintain the fiction that you are still, somewhere, moving toward it. The moment you say the specific thing, you create the conditions for a specific failure. The ambiguity is not laziness. It is, in its way, a strategy.

There is also the problem of the word itself. Manifest has been so thoroughly claimed by a particular kind of content: the vision board, “the secret,” having an abundance mindset, the affirmation delivered into a ring light — that it has become almost unusable for anyone with a working relationship to irony. I had spent years being the person who found this deeply embarrassing and unpromising, who had tried writing affirmations and felt like a failed actor performing a script she did not believe.

What I did on New Year’s Eve was different because I was different. I was no longer in a position to be embarrassed. The year had taken that particular protection from me, along with a number of others. All that was left was the notebook.

The moment something exists in precise written detail, it stops being a dream. A dream asks nothing of you. A plan has requirements. The act of writing it down is the act of crossing from one to the other.

The mechanism here is not mysterious, though it is often presented as though it is. The brain does not reliably distinguish between a vivid imagined experience and a real one in terms of the neural pathways it forms. Repetition is how the nervous system learns what is true. Athletes have used this for decades. Visualisation not as wish-fulfilment but as a form of neural rehearsal, a way of making the body familiar with a reality it has not yet physically inhabited. The brain that has rehearsed something in sufficient detail is a brain that, when the actual moment arrives, recognises it. Has, in a meaningful sense, already been there.

What makes the exercise work is precisely what makes it feel absurd: the specificity, the present tense, the insistence on speaking what does not yet exist as though it does. The vagueness that feels like self-protection is the same vagueness that makes the whole exercise useless.

You have to mean the specific thing. You have to say the specific thing. Imprecision is not humility. It is an obstruction.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Niche, risky, the kind of thing most people would have been advised against. I took it. The application was accepted in under two months.

I was applying for roles and rejected from the most promising one after five rigourous rounds of interviews. Then, I was introduced to my next employer by the executive who had rejected me at the final stage. It was a dream role — with an ideal salary — I could not have known to want before it fell into my lap with ease.

I began to truly invest in the seedlings of friendships I had planted, and poured myself into the most healthy, nurturing and beautiful friendships of my adult life. They became, over the following months, the lifesource of so much joy and levity I had been depleted of. The kind I had cried about in bed at three in the morning believing I would never have, in this city, ever.

I found the home online on a weekday evening. It was in the exact neighbourhood I had named in the notebook — the one I had written down and then immediately thought: not realistic. Out of budget and out of my league. I just happened to be the first to view it. The first to make an offer. The offer was accepted the same day.

None of this felt like magic. It felt like recognition. As though some part of my nervous system had already been there, had already stood in that home, had already sat across from those people, and was simply waiting for the rest of me to catch up.

The brain that has rehearsed something in sufficient detail recognises it when it arrives. I had rehearsed. And when it came, I was ready. I stopped resisting what was meant for me.

I am not offering this as testimony. I am not trying to argue that the universe rewards vision boards or that desire is a form of gravity. I am saying something more specific and, I think, more verifiable: that keeping your desires inarticulate has a cost that we routinely underestimate. The fear of naming what you want is the fear of being accountable to yourself, and that fear is, in practice, far more limiting than the fear of not getting it.

There is a concept in Taoism called Wu Wei: effortless action, movement in alignment with what already is rather than against it. I have come to understand that effortless does not mean passive. It means the cessation of resistance. The resistance I had been carrying for years was not protecting me from failure. It was just noise — loud enough to drown the signal of what I actually wanted, constant enough that I had begun to confuse it with my own voice.

The year I named everything was the year everything fell into place.

I do not think that is a coincidence. I think it is the whole point.

Below is the exact structure I used.

Journalling Guide to building your Dream Life

Step one: Reflect on the last twelve months.

Think about who you have been this past year. Go through every area of your life — relationships, work, finances, health and body, home, creative life, energy. Write the honest account of each, not the softened one.

What was the theme underneath the events? Not what happened, but what was driving it.

What twenty per cent of your actions produced eighty per cent of your meaningful progress?

What were the consistent sources of energy drain — anxiety, restlessness, the relationships or situations that cost more than they gave?

Write the gap: who did you say you would be at the start of the year, and who did you actually become? Why?

Name it plainly. Do not soften it. You cannot change what you are not willing to see.

Step two: Build your new identity.

Now that you know where you are starting from, you decide who you are.

Write three core identity statements in the present tense. Not I want to be — I am. Already true. Declarative.

Write three core objectives: specific, tangible, and measurable. What does this identity actually produce? What has she built? What does her life look like?

Write three core feelings: not just the material destinations but the emotional ones. Why do you want what you want? What will it feel like when it is real? Those feelings are what you are actually moving toward.

Write an if/then plan for each objective. If I feel financially overwhelmed, then I will —. If I feel like giving up, then I will —. Write this before you need it. It is contingency architecture for the version of you that has not arrived yet.

Step three: Break each objective into every single actionable step.

This is the most important step. This is where the dream becomes a plan.

Reverse engineer each objective completely. What does every step look like, from where you are now to where you are going?

Be granular. For a financial goal: the exact monthly target, the exact date, the exact expenditure you are cutting. For a home: the neighbourhood, the timeline, the budget, what you need to research before you will recognise it when it arrives.

Add a loose timeline if it helps you — it helped me. Having a shape to the weeks, months and year made it less abstract and more completely clear.

This is the page you return to every day. Dogear it. Keep yourself on track.

Step four: Write the declaration.

Take everything you have written and rewrite it one final time as a statement of what is already true.

First person. Present tense. Not I will have but I have. Not I want to feel but I feel.

Write it as the person who has already arrived at the logical conclusion of everything on those pages.

Then say it out loud. Not once. Not as a performance. Until the words stop feeling like a lie and start feeling like a memory — until your body catches up to what your mind is rehearsing.

The exercise only works if you are willing to be specific and willing to be honest. Both of those requirements are harder than they sound, and they are harder for the same reason: they require you to be accountable to yourself. Specificity asks you to commit. Honesty asks you to look at the gap without softening it.

Both feel, at first, like exposure. They are actually the opposite. They are the end of it. The snake does not feel exposed when the old skin falls away. It simply becomes, for the first time in months, comfortable in its own body.

Thanks for reading baby's Substack!
