After reflecting upon hell and purgatory, today we lift our eyes towards heaven. Heaven is not a material reward. It is not a place where all our earthly desires are finally satisfied. Heaven is infinitely greater than that: heaven is God Himself.

St John sums up the whole happiness of heaven in one wonderful sentence: “We shall see Him as He is” (1 John 3:2).

To behold God face to face. To love Him without any obstacle. Never again to be able to lose Him. That is heaven. Our entire faith, our whole hope, and our Christian life are directed towards this encounter.

Today we also remember the martyrdom of Father Jacques Hamel, who was murdered while celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in Rouen in 2016.

His murderer also believed that he was acting in order to obtain paradise. Here we see one of the great tragedies of our age: two men speak of paradise, yet they are speaking of two entirely different realities.

For the Christian, heaven is not first of all what we receive; it is Whom we encounter.

The centre of heaven is the Most Holy Trinity.

It is entering into the joy of meeting the Risen Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the communion of saints.

It is the eternal liturgy, where the angels sing without ceasing: “Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus.”

For the Christian, the more one loves God, the more one forgets oneself. The whole Christian life is a school of humility, charity, and self-giving. Our Lord teaches us: “Whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.”

By contrast, the traditional understanding of paradise in Islam, as it appears in the Qur’an and in many classical commentaries, places considerable emphasis upon gardens, rivers, banquets, precious garments, pleasures, and rewards granted to believers. It is true that some great Muslim mystics developed a more spiritual understanding of closeness to God. Nevertheless, in its classical presentation, this vision remains profoundly different from that of the Gospel.

Christianity does not primarily promise created goods; it promises the Creator.

St Thomas Aquinas dares to write something extraordinary: even if one possessed every imaginable happiness without God, it would not be heaven. For our hearts were created for God. This is why the martyrs are so incomprehensible in the eyes of the world.

Father Jacques Hamel did not die in order to obtain an earthly paradise or a material reward. He died because he already belonged to Christ. And the one who loves Christ more than his own life already possesses heaven in hope. Christian martyrs do not kill in order to enter heaven, unlike Islamist fanatics. Christian martyrs accept being killed rather than deny the One who is Himself Heaven. What an immense difference!

The Christian never seeks to open heaven through violence. Heaven was opened on Calvary when Jesus forgave those who crucified Him. That is the only path. The Cross. Forgiveness. Love of one’s enemies. The sacrifice of self.

When Father Jacques Hamel fell at the foot of the altar, this whole truth shone forth. The sacrifice of the Mass was united with the sacrifice of his own life.

My dear Brethren, we must ask ourselves one very simple question. What do we truly desire? Do we simply want to be happy? Or do we want God? Those two desires are not always the same.

The Christian learns each day to say with the saints: “Lord, I wish to prefer nothing to Your love.”

If we seek God today—in prayer, in Confession, and in Holy Communion—then heaven already begins here below. And one day, when the veil is lifted, we shall discover that our whole life was nothing but a preparation for that one encounter. To see God. To love Him. And to remain with Him for all eternity.

In the previous week, we reflected upon Hell: the dreadful possibility of rejecting God forever. Today allow me to invite you to contemplate a reality that is infinitely more consoling: Purgatory.

If Hell manifests the justice of God, Purgatory reveals His mercy in a most beautiful way. Many souls die in God’s friendship without yet being perfectly ready to enter His glory.

Yet the Book of Revelation tells us plainly: “Nothing unclean shall enter the heavenly Jerusalem.”

God is infinitely holy. Heaven is perfect communion with Him. How could a soul still marked by the effects of sin bear the splendour of His presence?

Think of gold. Before it becomes a beautiful ornament, it must pass through the fire. The fire does not destroy the gold. It simply removes the impurities. That is a beautiful image of Purgatory. It is not the wrath of God. It is the fire of His love.

St Catherine of Genoa, who received extraordinary graces to understand Purgatory, wrote these remarkable words: “The souls in Purgatory suffer with immense joy because they know they are saved, and that they are advancing unfailingly towards God.”

There lies the great difference between Hell and Purgatory. In Hell there is no hope. In Purgatory there is no despair. There is only waiting. A waiting full of longing. A waiting full of certainty.

Imagine a child who has finally found his mother after a long separation. She stands before him. He sees her. He longs to run into her arms. Yet one final obstacle remains. The waiting is painful. Yet it is filled with joy, because the reunion is certain. So it is with the Holy Souls. Perhaps their greatest suffering is not material fire. It is their overwhelming longing for God.

On earth we are easily distracted. We forget God far too often. In Purgatory there are no distractions. The whole soul is fixed upon the One whom it loves. And it suffers because it cannot yet possess Him completely.

My dear brethren, There is another wonderful truth. We can help them. What a consolation! Death does not destroy the Communion of Saints. It transforms it. Our prayers cross the threshold of eternity. Every Holy Mass offered. Every Rosary. Every indulgence gained. Every sacrifice accepted out of love. Every act of charity. All these can bring relief to those souls who can no longer do anything for themselves. What a responsibility! And what a privilege!

How often do we think of our departed loved ones? Sometimes we do more for the flowers upon a grave than for the soul awaiting our prayers. In her wisdom, Holy Mother Church constantly urges us to pray for the dead. Why? Because it is one of the greatest works of mercy. And let us never forget this. One day, perhaps, we ourselves shall depend upon those same prayers. What a beautiful thought—that those for whom we have prayed may one day intercede for us before the throne of God.

Purgatory also teaches us something about the present life. Why wait until tomorrow to become saints? Every good confession already purifies the soul. Every fervent Holy Communion increases charity within us. Every voluntary penance may spare us from a future purification. Every act of humility weakens that self-love to which we cling so stubbornly. God wishes to purify us now. He would rather sanctify us on earth than purify us after death.

St John of the Cross reminds us: “At the evening of life, we shall be judged on love.”

That is the heart of the matter. Purgatory is not a second chance. Our choice for God is made at the moment of death. Purgatory is the completion of the work of love that began here on earth.

My dear faithful, Let us not fear this final purification. Rather, let us fear not loving enough. Let us ask today for the grace to live generous and holy lives. Let us pray faithfully for our departed. Let us have Holy Masses offered for them. Let us gain indulgences. Let us offer our sacrifices with love. And when our own final hour comes, if God sees fit to purify us still, may we accept that final act of His mercy with complete confidence.

Let us ask Our Lady, Comforter of the Afflicted, never to let us forget the Holy Souls in Purgatory. May they often be remembered in our prayers. So that one day they may welcome us at the gates of Heaven with these beautiful words: “Thank you for not forgetting us, we are truly blessed and redeemed in the most Precious Blood of the Lamb, let’s praise his Mercy for ever and ever.”

Our Lord says to us in today’s Gospel words that are certainly not fashionable: “Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.” Our Lord is not speaking poetically. He is speaking of a reality.

Today we begin a series of three sermons on the Last Things: Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven.

Why speak of these realities today? Because they are scarcely mentioned any more. Yet the Church has taught them for two thousand years, not to frighten us, but to save us. St Francis de Sales tells us that meditation on the Last Things is the beginning of true wisdom. Whoever forgets eternity will eventually live only for today.

Hell exists. It is not an invention of medieval preachers. It is not merely a symbol for evil. It is a truth of the Catholic faith. And it is striking that no one spoke more often about Hell than Our Lord Himself.

He speaks of the unquenchable fire. Of the outer darkness. Of weeping and gnashing of teeth. Of the worm that dieth not.

Why such powerful language? Because God wants to keep us from going there.

A father who sees his child running towards a cliff does not whisper polite advice—he cries out. The words of Christ are the cry of Divine Love.

But what is Hell? It is not first of all a place of material flames. The greatest suffering of Hell is eternal separation from God. We were created to see God, to love Him, and to live in Him. Imagine a plant torn forever from the soil. A fish cast permanently out of the water. A heart condemned never to love again. Such is the soul separated forever from the One for whom it was created. Every other suffering flows from that one. St Augustine wrote: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.” In Hell, that rest will never come.

Why do souls go to Hell? Certainly not because God ceases to love them. God loves even the damned. But He also respects the freedom He has given them.

Hell is, one might say, the final word of a soul that says to God for all eternity: “I do not want You.” And God, who never forces love, tragically respects that choice.

The Catechism teaches that Hell is the state of those who die in mortal sin without repentance. That is why mortal sin is so terribly serious. Not because God is easily offended. But because mortal sin deliberately destroys charity within the soul. It breaks the friendship with God that alone can lead us to Heaven.

My dear brethren,

There is another danger today. It is not so much denying Hell. It is assuming that Hell is empty. The Church has never declared that any particular person is in Hell. But neither has she ever taught that everyone will be saved.

On the contrary, Our Lord speaks of the narrow gate and the difficult path, and He commands us to watch and to persevere. It would be a strange kind of charity to silence the warnings of the Saviour.

Yet let us avoid the opposite error as well. Fear is never the goal of the Christian life. Love is. We do not seek Heaven merely to escape Hell. We seek Heaven because we long for God. Hell is not the centre of our faith. Christ is. And it is precisely because Christ died upon the Cross that no one need be lost. Every good confession closes one more door to Hell. Every fervent Holy Communion opens the soul more widely to Heaven. Every act of charity allows eternal life to grow within us.

So what should we take away from today’s sermon? Not anxiety. But profound gratitude. God is still giving us time. We are still breathing. We can still repent.

The devil whispers two great lies. At the beginning of life he says: “There is plenty of time.” At the end he says: “It is too late.”

Christ answers both lies with one word: Salvation.

Today is the day of salvation. Let us make good use of this grace.

And let us ask Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners, to obtain for us the greatest of all graces: to die in the friendship of God.

Then, when our final hour comes, may we hear not the words of condemnation, but those words for which every Christian longs: “Well done, good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.”

We must reinstate the virtues of love and care that our ancestors had for one another, their communities, and their nation. Otherwise, it will be lost.

Distributism, at its core, emphasises widespread ownership, localism, and the flourishing of small scale enterprise and community life. The village green embodies these principles naturally. It is not merely a patch of grass, it is a platform for human activity rooted in place. When properly nurtured, it becomes a living vision of economic and cultural decentralisation.

First, village greens should be protected as essential community assets. Too often they are viewed as expendable land. This reflects a narrow understanding of value. A green may not generate the same immediate financial return as housing or retail, but it produces something far more enduring, namely social cohesion, wellbeing, and local identity. Once lost, these cannot easily be rebuilt. Legal protections exist, but they must be strengthened and supported by active local stewardship.

However, preservation alone is not enough. A neglected green is little better than a lost one. These spaces must be used with regular and meaningful activity. Traditional sports such as football, cricket, and rounders should once again have a home on the green, not confined solely to formal clubs or facilities.

Equally important is the revival of local markets. Makers markets and food stalls bring together small producers, artisans, and families in a way that directly reflects distributist ideals. Instead of relying on large and impersonal supply chains, communities can support local bakers, growers, craftspeople, and cooks. These markets are not just economic exchanges, they are social events where relationships are built alongside the livelihoods of local people. Local culinary traditions, often overshadowed by a more uniform food culture, can be rediscovered and celebrated.

Cultural life should also find a natural home on the green. Live music, folk traditions, and performances from local bands to Morris dancing create a sense of connection with the past while providing identity to new generations. When people gather to watch, participate, and celebrate together, they reinforce a shared sense of belonging that no digital substitute can replicate.

Importantly, this vision should not be confined to rural villages. Urban areas can and should embrace the same concept. Parks, small green spaces, and even repurposed land can serve as village greens in all but name. In densely populated areas the need for such communal spaces is arguably even greater. They offer a counterbalance to the anonymity and fragmentation of city life.

Local authorities and community groups have a crucial role to play, but the initiative must ultimately come from the people themselves. A distributist approach rejects passive dependence on centralised solutions. Instead, it encourages communities to take ownership by organising events, supporting local traders, and maintaining their shared spaces. Small actions, consistently applied, can transform an underused green into the beating heart of a neighbourhood.

In an age of increasing centralisation and disconnection, the village green offers a simple but powerful alternative. By protecting and revitalising these spaces, both rural and urban alike, we can foster economies that are local, cultures that are alive, and communities that are truly rooted.

The truth is both simpler and far more magnificent. The English people, not our passing governments, not our elites, not our courts and financiers, but the common Englishman and woman, have been among the most radical forces in the shaping of modern civilisation. And radical not in the shallow sense of fashionable outrage that we often see today, but radical as in rooted to principle, rooted to conscience, rooted to an unshakeable instinct that power must answer to truth.

From the earliest days of our recorded national life, the English have shown an extraordinary unwillingness to bow unconditionally to authority. In 1215, at Magna Carta, the English barons, themselves products of a wider society that understood inherited rights, compelled King John to recognise that even a monarch stands beneath the law. This was no small act. In a Europe dominated by the doctrine of divine-right absolutism, England stated that law is older than kings, and that liberty is not a gift but an inheritance.

But the radical English spirit was not confined to nobles in armour. In 1381, during the Peasants’ Revolt, ordinary labourers, men who tilled soil and bore the weight of plague and taxation, marched on London to demand justice. Figures like Wat Tyler were not polished ideologues, they were Englishmen animated by a stubborn conviction that they were not beasts of burden but subjects with rights. Their revolt was crushed, but the idea they embodied, that even the humblest Englishman possesses dignity, was never extinguished.

That same radical instinct resurfaced again and again. During the turmoil of the seventeenth century and the English Civil War, Parliamentarians, Levellers, and ordinary soldiers debated sovereignty, suffrage, and representation with a seriousness unmatched in Europe. The trial and execution of a reigning monarch shocked the continent. Whatever one thinks of the outcome, the principle was unmistakable - no earthly ruler is immune from moral judgment.

The English genius has always been to ensure liberty with order, to be revolutionary without descending into chaos. Unlike the ideological bloodbaths of later continental revolutions, England’s transformations were often evolutionary, yet no less profound. The Glorious Revolution secured parliamentary supremacy and laid foundations for constitutional government that would influence the world. It was not abstract theory that achieved this, but the steady will of a people.

And yet, the radicalism of the English is not confined to political theory. It is moral as well as constitutional.

During the long struggle against the Atlantic slave trade, it was not merely parliamentary debate that carried the day. It was popular conscience. In the late eighteenth century, thousands of ordinary English families participated in sugar boycotts to protest slavery in the Caribbean. Women, in particular, led this movement, refusing to purchase West Indian sugar as an act of solidarity with enslaved Africans. This was not comfortable virtue-signalling; sugar was a treasured luxury in working households. To give it up was a genuine sacrifice. The campaign supported figures like William Wilberforce and contributed to the passage of the Slave Trade Act 1807. Here again, the English commoner demonstrated a radical capacity - to align daily life with moral conviction.

Consider too the great popular movements of the nineteenth century. The Chartists (industrial workers, artisans, and labourers) organised mass petitions demanding universal male suffrage, secret ballots, and fair representation. Though initially dismissed, their demands eventually became pillars of British democracy. The trade union movement, forged in mills and mines during the Industrial Revolution, did not arise from aristocratic salons but from working men and women who insisted that dignity must extend into the factory floor.

Even the scientific and industrial breakthroughs that transformed the globe were driven by practical English ingenuity. The steam engine, the railway, modern finance, parliamentary democracy, common law traditions. They emerged from a culture that valued enterprise, debate, and stubborn independence. The Englishman is not naturally submissive, he questions, tinkers, argues, and builds.

In the twentieth century, that same radical independence manifested in quieter but no less profound ways. During the Second World War, when much of Europe fell under totalitarian shadow, the English people endured bombardment during the Blitz with stoic defiance. It was not rhetoric alone that sustained them, but a deep-rooted conviction that liberty was worth preserving. Ordinary Londoners, shopkeepers, labourers, and clerks stood firm, not because they were ordered to, but because they believed it was right.

To speak of the radical Englishman, then, is not to glorify conquest or deny historical complexity. It is to recognise a consistent thread of a people who, time and again, have resisted unaccountable power, demanded rights, and extended those rights beyond themselves.

Those who blame “the English” for the ills of the world often conflate governments with people, empire with identity. But the same England that produced empire also produced abolition. The same England that industrialised the world also pioneered labour rights. The same England that crowned kings also insisted on binding them with law.

At our best, the English are not imperialists but insurrectionists against injustice. We are a nation of radicals in the oldest sense, rooted in a belief that truth stands higher than authority. From Runnymede to the sugar boycotts, from the fields of 1381 to the factories of Manchester, the English people have shown a fierce love of liberty and an equally fierce sense of fairness.

To love England is not to claim perfection. It is to honour a lineage of stubborn conscience. It is to recognise that the English story is not merely one of power, but of principle.

And that, more than any accusation thrown by critics, is the true radical nature of the Englishman.

In England today, a distorted moral framework has taken hold, one that elevates mass immigration and globalist ideology above the safety of women and children, above cultural and religious continuity, and even above Christ Himself. This inversion is not Christian. It is a betrayal of ordered love, of subsidiarity, and of the Church’s historic moral teaching.

A truly Christian nation must put Christ first, protect the innocent, preserve its faith and culture, and govern prudently. Anything less is negligence masquerading as compassion. Christian theology is clear: love must be rightly ordered (ordo amoris). St Augustine teaches that when loves are disordered, injustice follows. Scripture reinforces this principle:

“If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith.” (1 Timothy 5:8)

This principle applies not only to families, but analogously to nations. A government that prioritises abstract humanitarian claims over the concrete safety of its own women and children has abandoned its primary moral duty. The Catechism affirms that political authority exists to safeguard the common good (CCC 1906–1909). The first victims of social disorder are always the most vulnerable. When the state fails to protect them, it commits a grave moral failure. Catholic social teaching insists that protection of the innocent is non‑negotiable. Our Lord Himself reserves His harshest words for those who harm children:

“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck.” (Matthew 18:6)

A state that knowingly permits conditions in which women and children are placed at increased risk, through reckless, large‑scale, unvetted migration, acts against both natural law and divine law.

England has already witnessed the catastrophic consequences of moral cowardice: decades of grooming scandals, institutional silence, fear of cultural confrontation, and the abandonment of victims in the name of ‘community relations’. This was not tolerance; it was injustice. It was the deliberate placing of ideological comfort above the cries of violated children. To say that safeguarding must come before mass immigration is not hatred, it is moral clarity.

St Thomas Aquinas names prudence as the charioteer of the virtues. Without prudence, charity becomes reckless and destructive. The Church teaches that while individuals may seek asylum, states retain the right, and duty, to regulate borders for the sake of the common good (CCC 2241). This includes the duty to assess cultural compatibility, legal adherence, and risks to social cohesion.

Uncontrolled migration that introduces parallel legal systems, undermines women’s equality before the law, or tolerates practices fundamentally opposed to Christian moral teaching, such as Sharia arbitration, forced marriage, or female genital mutilation, is incompatible with Christian social order. A Christian nation cannot permit practices that directly contradict the dignity of the human person and the moral law, no matter how they are culturally justified elsewhere.

Christianity rejects the fiction of moral neutrality. Christ is King, not only of hearts, but of societies.

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18)

England’s laws, customs, and moral assumptions were shaped by Christianity. To place Christianity on equal footing with belief systems that explicitly reject it, seek to marginalise it, or contradict its moral vision is not pluralism, it is national self‑erasure.

An understanding of religious freedom does not require the surrender of Christian identity. It requires the freedom of the Church to teach, worship, and shape society without being displaced in its own homeland. Culture is not infinitely elastic. It is inherited, cultivated, and protected. England’s Christian culture, its parish life, moral instincts, and understanding of law, cannot survive unlimited demographic transformation without consequence. To pretend that mass cultural replacement ‘adds richness’ while eroding trust, cohesion, and shared moral language is to deny reality. Hospitality has limits. Even monasteries have walls. Even charity requires order.

Loving one’s country means preserving the conditions that allow people to live together peacefully under a shared moral framework. Christian teaching does not require hatred of other peoples. It requires responsibility toward one’s own. We may wish other nations well precisely by encouraging them to flourish according to their own cultures and laws, rather than dissolving all nations into a rootless global mass. Globalism treats people as economic units and cultures as disposable. Christianity treats nations as real communities with duties to God and neighbour.

England has a vocation. From its saints and martyrs to its legal and charitable traditions, Christianity is not an accessory, it is the foundation. To defend England’s Christian identity is to defend women, children, families, and the vulnerable. To abandon it is to expose them to harm in the name of a false mercy.

Christ is the Lamb, but He is also the Lion of Judah, and our faith demands courage, protection of the innocent, and public witness. A nation that refuses to defend its faith, its women, its children, and its moral order has not chosen love, it has chosen abdication.

To put Christ first is to govern and love rightly. That is not extremism. It is Christianity.

Distributism offers a hopeful vision in answer to that cry. It tells us that economics and justice cannot be separated, and that neither the “invisible hand” nor the iron fist will produce a good society only the work of free people joined in moral community can. It reminds us that Christian principles of charity, justice, and the dignity of the person have practical implications for how we design our economy. These principles are not abstract: they mean crafting laws and institutions that favor the family business, the cooperative, the homesteader; they mean, as Pope Leo urged, “inducing as many as possible to become owners”[21]. They also mean reviving the idea that economy exists for man, not man for the economy. Wealth is a means, not an end in itself; the end is the flourishing of human life – material and spiritual – in harmony with our neighbors and under God’s providence.

As the National Distributist Party, we are heirs to this rich intellectual and moral tradition. But more importantly, we are called to be standard-bearers for its renewal. Our task is to translate these venerable ideas into concrete policies and initiatives that can benefit our nation here and now. This means advocating for things like: support for small and medium enterprises over monopolies, incentives for employee ownership and profit-sharing, the rebuilding of local economies with regional banks and cooperatives, land reform that enables young families to buy homes and start farms, and taxation and trade policies that serve labor and community rather than undercut them. It also means fostering a culture that values thrift, hard work, and local loyalty: virtues that Distributism holds dear. In a word, it means trusting the people of this country - trusting that given the chance to own and create, they will rise to the occasion. We do not aim to impose a utopia from above; we aim to empower Britons to shape their own economic destiny, shoulder to shoulder, just as free guildsmen and yeoman farmers once did.

Let us also remember that Distributism is not only about economics, but about the kind of civilization we want to build. G.K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc were staunchly Christian in their outlook; they saw the family as a little kingdom and the home as a little church. They knew that when people own their property and the fruits of their toil, they are not just materially better off, they are more fulfilled and more free to live according to their convictions. “Property is freedom,” they liked to say, meaning that a homeowner or an independent craftsman stands upright as a citizen, not beholden to the whims of a landlord or a boss or a bureaucrat. In promoting widespread property, we promote widespread freedom. And in promoting small communities, we promote environments where faith, virtue, and culture can thrive. After all, it’s in the family, the local church, the town square that the values of a society are cultivated and passed on. A distributist society, being decentralized, plural, and rooted in family life, naturally bolsters those intermediating institutions that make for a healthy nation. It gives space for the sacred in everyday life for people to reclaim stewardship over their work, their land, their local traditions, rather than surrendering all those things to distant market forces or government decrees.

Let us take inspiration from those who went before us. Chesterton once said, “The aim of human polity is to make as many people as possible legally and literally secure, so that they may devote their minds to divine things.” The goal of Distributism was never mere material prosperity; it was always human dignity and the higher purposes of life. By securing the material foundation – widespread ownership and honest livelihoods we open the door for families to raise their children in stability, for neighbors to care for one another, and for individuals to live without constant fear of want or domination. We create the conditions in which true freedom including the freedom to practice virtue and faith can flourish.

Such is the promise that Distributism holds out. It is not a promise of easy wealth or technocratic efficiency; it is something nobler. It is the promise of a society where economics serves the human soul, not the other way around. A society where our fields, our forges, and our families belong to us once again where we are not tenants in our own land, but freeholders; not employees only, but entrepreneurs of our own lives; not numbers in a ledger, but persons in community.

This vision that the National Distributist Party submits, is worth striving for. It is rooted in the best of our traditions: British, yes, but also deeply Christian and universal in its human appeal. And it offers hope in a time when so many feel that the current systems are failing to answer their needs for meaning, security, and justice.

The National Distributist Party stands for this hope. Is Distributism merely a charming relic of a bygone age: a “beautiful ideal” that cannot work in practice? Or can we see glimmers of it in action even in our modern world of high-tech industry and global markets? This question matters, because a philosophy without examples can sound utopian. The distributists themselves always insisted their ideas could and did work, citing both historical precedents (they loved to point out that medieval Europe’s economy of independent guildsmen and yeoman farmers was closer to distributism than to either capitalism or socialism[45]) and emerging models of their own time. Today, we can carry that argument further, drawing on the evidence of the last hundred years. While no nation has (yet) “gone distributist” in full, there are many examples that give credence to distributist principles and show how they can be applied.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936) was a prolific essayist, novelist, and poet, known for his wit, wisdom, and staunch defense of the common man. Chesterton had watched the England of his day fall under the shadow of industrial monopolies and soulless urbanization. He believed ordinary people were being rendered powerless cogs in a machine “workers in a system, not proprietors of it,” as he might say. A man of deep Christian faith (he converted to Catholicism in 1922), Chesterton drew on both Christian teaching and English tradition to advocate a better way. In books like What’s Wrong with the World (1910) and The Outline of Sanity (1926), he laid out the distributist vision: thriving villages and towns filled with independent shopkeepers and farmers, “small is beautiful” economics long before that phrase was coined, and a warning that both industrial capitalism and state socialism threatened to crush human dignity. Chesterton had a gift for striking aphorisms that made complex ideas plain. We have already heard a few of his famous lines; another bears repeating: “There can be no liberty for a community that lacks the means by which to live.” In other words, political freedom means little if concentrated economic power keeps the common man in dependence or destitution. Chesterton’s genius was to make Distributism not a dry theory but a cause to inspire a crusade for “Home, Family, and the [small] Farm,” as we might summarize his aims.

Hilaire Belloc (1870–1953), his close friend, was equally important. Belloc was a polymath: a poet, historian, and even a Member of Parliament. Born in France and raised in England, Belloc too was a devout Catholic and a fierce critic of the status quo. His book The Servile State (1912) was one of the first to analyze where modern capitalism might be headed. In it, Belloc predicted that if society did not distribute property more justly, it would devolve into a quasi-slavery: either the masses would become permanent wage-serfs to the rich, or the state would impose a system of compulsory welfare and labor in either case, people would effectively lose their freedom, trading it for subsistence. This “servile state,” he warned, was the natural outcome of both unchecked capitalism and the fashionable collectivist policies of his time[33]. As an antidote, Belloc championed what he sometimes called an “ownership society.” He proposed practical measures: anti-trust actions to break up monopolies, laws to favor small proprietors, and the revival of guilds or professional associations to restore worker influence[34][35]. Along with Chesterton, Belloc helped found the Distributist League in Britain, which agitated in the 1920s and 1930s for these reforms[34]. They published journals, gave lectures, and tried to demonstrate Distributism in action including efforts to resettle urban workers on small farms (the Catholic Land Movement was one outgrowth, encouraging families to return to farming for a healthier, rooted life[36]). Belloc’s sharp pen and clear vision made him the strategist of Distributism, where Chesterton was the prophet and bard.

They were not alone. In the clerical world, a great champion of Distributism was Fr. Vincent McNabb (1868–1943), a Dominican friar in London[37]. Wearing his humble habit, Fr. McNabb could be seen preaching on street corners about the need to “return to the land” and the Gospel call to justice for the poor. He believed that industrial capitalism was dehumanizing society, pulling families apart and estranging people from God’s creation. In his book The Church and the Land (1926), McNabb extolled the spiritual and social benefits of small-scale agrarian life[37]. He argued citing Scripture and Church teaching that a distributist order, with family farms and local self-sufficiency, would not only alleviate material poverty but also restore moral and spiritual health. To the end of his life, Fr. McNabb lived austerely among the poor of London’s East End, embodying the ideals he preached. His example reminded the Distributist movement that their cause was not merely economic, but deeply moral and religious at its core.

Across the ocean, in the United States, Distributist ideas also took root, especially through the work of Dorothy Day (1897–1980) and the Catholic Worker Movement she co-founded. Dorothy Day, now being considered for sainthood by the Church, was a radical social activist who converted to Catholicism and sought to live out the Gospel among the poor. In the 1930s, Day and her mentor Peter Maurin started establishing houses of hospitality for the needy and farming communes where people could live in community. They explicitly drew inspiration from Chesterton and Belloc, identifying themselves as distributists[38]. Dorothy Day’s newspaper, The Catholic Worker, regularly extolled small-scale cooperatives, mutual aid, and “the village economy” as alternatives to what Day saw as the twin evils of soulless capitalism and soul-killing communism[39]. She once wrote, “The only answer in this life, to the loneliness and estrangement of people, is community.” Distributism for her was not an abstract theory but a blueprint for building intentional communities of work, worship, and mutual care: something very close to the early Christian communities described in the Acts of the Apostles. The Catholic Worker Movement became, in effect, a practical experiment in distributist living: operating farms, small workshops, and local hospitality houses that persist even today. Dorothy Day’s strain of Distributism had a personalist, even anarchist streak she distrusted the state almost as much as she did big corporations, preferring solutions that arose from people living the Gospel in voluntary community[40]. Her life’s work stands as a testimony that Distributism wasn’t just a pipe dream of writers, but a principle that could galvanize real-life social renewal.

Other notable distributists could be named: Arthur Penty, an architect who advocated a revival of guilds and the arts-and-crafts economy; Eric Gill, a British artist and social critic who formed a kind of distributist commune of craftsmen; Fr. Heinrich Pesch, a German economist whose ideas on solidarity influenced Distributism; and even statesmen like E.F. Schumacher, whose famous book Small Is Beautiful (1973) carried forward many distributist ideas about human-scale economics. But perhaps more illuminating than naming each thinker is recognizing their common conviction. Whether poet or priest, journalist or activist, they all “drew deeply from Catholic moral theology,” as one scholar observed, and shared the belief that Christian social principles had to be translated into the ownership and organization of daily life[41]. They refused to separate economics from ethics, or production from the purposes of human life. In an age intoxicated by bigness gigantic trusts, imperial governments, the “modern mass man” – the distributists rebelled in the name of the human person, the family, and God’s truth about human society. They wanted to rebuild “the Good Society” from the ground up.

It must be said that Distributism as a movement remained relatively small. It never became the platform of a ruling political party in its original form, and skeptics then (as now) questioned whether its agrarian idealism could handle the complexities of a modern industrial nation. Yet its influence can be traced in various currents throughout the 20th century. Elements of Distributism found their way into Christian Democratic parties in Europe, which after World War II helped build social market economies balancing entrepreneurship with social welfare[42]. The post-war economic model of (West) Germany, for instance, with its support for small and medium enterprises, co-determination in companies, and antitrust enforcement, bore some resemblance to distributist preferences[43]. In Britain, one might argue that the Labour movement’s early promotion of cooperatives and the Conservative tradition of one-nation Toryism (which upheld the rights of small property owners) each had a dash of distributist spirit. And in recent years, we’ve even seen new political groups explicitly invoking Distributism such as the American Solidarity Party in the U.S., a minor party formed in 2011 that openly calls itself distributist and draws on Catholic social teaching in its platform[44].

Most importantly, Distributism’s legacy lies in the practical examples it inspired and the conversations it started. It planted the seed of an idea: that we do not have to choose between the individualism of the marketplace and the collectivism of the planner there is another way, rooted in older Christian visions of society, emphasizing widely shared ownership, virtue, and community. That idea continues to challenge economists and policymakers to this day.

What, then, does Distributism positively envision? We can summarize its core tenets as follows:

Widespread Private Property

Productive assets (land, tools, small businesses, etc.) should be owned by as many individuals and families as possible, rather than by a tiny elite or by the government[21][18]. This doesn’t mean every person must be a lone farmer or shopkeeper; it means the economic base of society should be broadly held. A family that owns its own farm or its own workshop is free from exploitative employers and free from overreaching bureaucrats. As one distributist wrote, “A family that owns its own land or its own tools can make its own way in the world without being dependent on someone else for a job.”[22] Property rights for the many translate into security, responsibility, and independence.

Family and the Human Scale

Distributism holds that the family (the household) is the fundamental unit of economic life not the individual atomized worker of capitalism, and not the state-planned collective of socialism[23][24]. An economy of widespread ownership is naturally an economy of small businesses, family farms, and local enterprises where work and home need not be at odds. It prefers human-scale operations, the neighborhood farm, the local workshop, the corner store –where personal relationships and moral responsibility can still govern economic life. This vision hearkens to more traditional modes of life, where work was often a family affair and communities were bound together by mutual exchange and aid.

Subsidiarity and Localism

Decisions should be made, and services provided, at the smallest competent level. A distributist society entrusts local communities parishes, towns, guilds, cooperatives with tasks that huge centralized states often clumsily handle[13]. Governance and economic power would be decentralized in line with the principle of subsidiarity. This means empowering local councils rather than distant officials, supporting community banks and credit unions rather than giant multinational banks, and fostering a rich civil society of associations and guilds. In practical terms, laws and policies in a distributist vision would “be structured to benefit the small at the expense of the large,” reversing a situation today where often the biggest players get tax breaks and bailouts that the little guys never see[25][26]. It would prune back monopolies the way a gardener prunes a tree to allow light and air for the smaller shoots to grow[26].

Cooperative Economics

While Distributism favors individual ownership, it also heartily supports cooperative ventures and worker owned companies where appropriate. Not every enterprise can be a one-man shop or a family farm think of railroads, factories, or utilities but distributists insist such larger undertakings can be organized as worker co-ops, credit unions, mutual associations, or other member-owned models[27][28]. In these models, the workers or users collectively own and manage the enterprise, rather than absentee shareholders or the state. This ensures that even when businesses must be large, ownership is still distributed among the many who work in them. The cooperative model has deep resonance with Christian social thought, emphasizing solidarity and shared responsibility. It’s no surprise that many monasteries, parishes, and Christian communities through history ran enterprises on cooperative lines.

Anti-Monopoly and Anti-Usury

To maintain a distributist order, monopolies and cartels must be vigorously checked. Anti-trust laws and anti-monopoly policies are essential to prevent the re-concentration of wealth and power[27]. Distributists have also traditionally been fierce critics of usury and speculative finance practices by which those with capital can exploit those without. They favor finance that serves production and communities (such as cooperative banks or local savings societies) over speculative banks that prey on debtors. In short, the economy must be brought under a moral law, oriented to human need and justice, not merely to profit. As one distributist author put it, we must “reassert the moral ordering of economic life” so that economic means are subordinated to human ends, not the other way around[29][30].

In essence, Distributism seeks a balance of freedom and virtue in economic life. It wants people free from domination – neither wage slaves to a corporation nor wards of an all providing state but it equally wants people bound by reciprocal duties to family and community. It asks of us a certain temperance: an economy of enough, rather than a restless chase of more that characterizes both capitalist consumerism and communist five-year plans. It is, if you will, a vision of common sense economics, drawn from old truths about human nature. “Too much capitalism does not mean too many capitalists, but too few capitalists,” Chesterton once remarked wryly[31]. What he meant is simple: under unrestrained capitalism, capital (and thus power) ends up in the hands of a shrinking clique – which is exactly what both socialism and Distributism decry. The distributist answer, however, is not to abolish private property, but to multiply it until you truly have “many capitalists” – in fact, a society in which almost everyone is, in some sense, a capitalist, an owner, a stakeholder.

In Rerum Novarum, Leo XIII affirmed that workers have a natural right to secure property of their own as a fruit of their labor[5]. He famously wrote: “The law, therefore, should favor ownership, and its policy should be to induce as many as possible of the people to become owners.”[6] In other words, a healthy society should widely distribute property and the means of production, rather than allowing them to be concentrated in a narrow class. This principle, the wide diffusion of ownership, is the beating heart of Distributism. It reflects an ethic of distributive justice, wherein the economy is structured to serve the common good of all classes[7][8].

Leo XIII’s encyclical did more than diagnose problems; it proposed remedies rooted in timeless truths. It upheld the dignity of work and the rights of workers to a just wage and to organize in unions[9][10]. It stressed that the family is a fundamental unit more ancient and vital than any state, with rights and duties that must be respected. It warned that when either big capital or big government undermines the little platoons of society: families, local communities, churches, guilds – the result is social upheaval. A just social order, Leo taught, is one that empowers families and small communities to flourish in freedom and responsibility, owning property and practicing mutual aid[11][1].

Just a generation later, in 1931, Pope Pius XI issued Quadragesimo Anno (“In the Fortieth Year”), reaffirming Leo’s insights and further developing the Church’s social doctrine. It was in this document that the principle of subsidiarity was articulated clearly: higher authorities should not absorb or take over tasks that lower or smaller communities can handle themselves[12]. This principle which is essentially localism raised to a moral imperative dovetails perfectly with Distributism. It insists that social and economic power should be kept as close to the grassroots as possible, rather than centralized in remote hands. As Pius XI and later Catholic teaching made clear, when social functions are handled at the lowest effective level, individuals and families retain their agency and communities remain vibrant[13]. Solidarity is the natural complement: the idea that we are our brothers’ keepers, bound to one another in pursuit of the common good. These twin principles of subsidiarity and solidarity form the core of Catholic social teaching and they form the core of Distributism as well[14][13].

It bears mentioning that these ideas resonates as far back as old testament tradition which is too often misunderstood. For example, we find the Year of Jubilee (Leviticus 25) – a law by which, every fifty years, Israelites were to forgive debts and return lands to their original family owners. The intent was to prevent any family from being permanently dispossessed or any clan from accumulating all the land[15][16]. In essence, the Jubilee ensured that everyone had access again to the means of production: an agrarian society’s chief means being land. This biblical ethic sought to preserve a broad distribution of property and to thwart the emergence of a permanent underclass. The spirit behind it is remarkably akin to the distributist ideal. Likewise, Christian moral teaching through the ages from St. Thomas Aquinas affirming private property as conducive to peace and order, to the medieval Church fostering guilds and just prices has long struggled to balance the right to own with the need to share. Distributism in the modern era can be seen as a revival of these old principles in a new industrial context: a call to “subordinate economic activity to human life as a whole, to our spiritual life, our intellectual life, our family life,” as one distributist writer aptly put it [17].

The English are a people formed from the unification of several Germanic tribes, the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. These tribes conquered this great land, establishing many kingdoms that would, over time, fuse into a single identity - that of the English, and the foundation of England herself.

From this bloodline come a people both hardy and humane, industrious yet imaginative. We descend from the stock of King Alfred the Great, the wise warrior who forged unity from chaos and sowed the first seeds of English nationhood. His vision was not only of a kingdom, but of a people, one law, one language, one faith. That spirit endures within us. It is in the quiet pride of the craftsman, the kindness of neighbours, and the unspoken understanding that being English is something special, something fortunate.

The Glory of English History

Our history is filled with courage and brilliance. England has given more to the progress of civilisation than perhaps any other nation. We were the first to give the world a parliament, to lay the foundations of liberty under law with Magna Carta, and to nurture the common man’s sense of fair play and justice. From Shakespeare’s pen to Newton’s mind, from the fields of Agincourt to the discovery of steam and the birth of industry, the English spirit has been one of innovation and endurance.

Our empire, though imperfect as all human endeavours are, spread not only trade, but law, language, and learning across the world. It carried the Bible, the school, and the cricket bat alike. We pioneered sports that still bring nations together; we gave the world football, rugby, and cricket. Such is the English gift.

Tradition and the Green and Pleasant Land

Englishness is not only history, it is living tradition. It is the maypole and the harvest festival, the village fête and the carol service. It is the scent of cut grass on a summer afternoon, the tolling of church bells across the valley, the flag of St George fluttering against a grey-blue sky. There is a quiet poetry in the English landscape, rolling hills, ancient oaks, winding lanes, and in it we feel the presence of those who came before us. Our connection to this land is not simply sentimental, it is spiritual.

To be English is to be tied to the changes of the seasons, to the customs that link us to our ancestors, to the simple joys that define our common life. That warmth, that unassuming decency, that charm, these are the marks of our people.

England as Mary’s Dowry

At the heart of English identity lies faith. England is called Our Lady’s Dowry, a nation consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, set apart as a bastion of Christendom. The cross of St George remains our standard, a reminder that our heritage is not only royal but sacred. Our saints, Cuthbert, Bede, Edmund, Edward the Confessor, Thomas Becket, stand as pillars of holiness in our story, men and women who embodied courage, sacrifice, and grace.

In rediscovering this faith, we rediscover ourselves. To restore the heart of England, we must cherish our Christian heritage, honour our saints, and uphold the values that made this green and pleasant land the envy of the world.

A Nation to Cherish

To be English, then, is to belong to something noble and beautiful. It is to inherit not only the blood of our forebears but their virtues of courage, charity, curiosity, and quiet pride. We are a people of builders and dreamers, warriors and poets, saints and sailors. We must never forget the greatness that lies in our story nor the grace that lies in our hearts.

England is not merely a country, it is a calling. And to be English is to answer it with gratitude, humility, and joy.

Farming has also benefited from being “open-source”, with Incan agricultural engineers developing the potato that we all now love, or how animal breeds weren’t the property of just one farmer, being shared among its countrymen to better the yields of wool or meat that led to the mighty square-like beasts in 19^th century British painting.

To this day we still have traditional varieties of everything in our produce section, hardier varieties that can survive for longer during a drought, or with different colours or texture, with centuries on its back and the joy of carrying forward to our descendants these generational treasures.

Nowadays, things are different. Unrestrained capital, once it conquered all the land it wanted, started to homogenize it, and this meant getting rid of competitors and forcing their choices on an unconsenting public. Now, both food and culture, things that have lasted for Millenia, are in grave danger if they don’t convert to their corporate-approved versions.

We can see this at how legislation favours richer interest groups while they corner those who can only submit to power. Large companies with Large Language Models feed data from stolen artwork and books, but suddenly it is a terrible crime that they lobby hard to punish onto those who try to search for a pdf on something no longer on print, like Nintendo closing down countless emulators with games that haven’t seen a shopping cart since 2008

In the UK it is illegal under the Plant Variety and Seeds Act 1964 (with many amendments) for an individual or organisation to give, trade or sell seed of an older variety of wheat (or any other agricultural crop) to a third party for growing purposes, subject to a significant fine. And this not only happens in Britain, I can attest to this also happening in Spain, France, Kenya and anywhere else the vultures who copyright seeds happen to dig its talons into.

Copyright also plays a part into the conservation of culture, of course. There is an entire Wikipedia list of lost museum works, and most don’t even have photos to recreate them from. These supposed houses of cultural heritage, instead of taking account of the dangers of having all your eggs in one basket, prefer to act as if they own something that is older than themselves and either sell their image rights for profit or outright ban the use of any photography whatsoever.

The same can be said for intellectual property laws, meant to last 5 years at most. Due to that perfidious mouse, I won’t live to see most works of the first half of the 21^st century go into public domain, and meanwhile streaming giants can pull off movies and documentaries with great public acclaim due to not having infinitely growing profits every single year.

The internet archive is a non-profit with a tool called the wayback machine, able to access any upshot that gets uploaded to it from any year of the Internet, along with a cooperation project with some libraries to share digitally some books. This breaks their greed, so it is routinely swamped with legal challenges and orders.

The agricultural equivalent to these is how GMO isn’t bad per se, but they make it malicious when they create self-destructive seeds, so farmers have to keep buying more, or push out of the market local breeds just because they don’t conserve well enough, ending forever heirloom fruits that have survived centuries. The Answer to this became seed banks, the most notorious one being the one buried in Icy Svalbard, safe from any menace except time itself.

Both Svalbard and any other museum still don’t have the right answer, as this isn’t how you conserve, but how you give a retirement, letting it sit and accumulate dust without usage. The answer is piracy.

We have amazing roman marble copies of now-molten Greek bronze statues, bootlegged theatre plays are sometimes what remains of the originals, criticism used to directly quote source material in ways that if it was on YouTube you would get a ‘strike’, but this is what is left of many books lost to the sands of anathema. Lots of orthodox icons have survived, as well as classical works, by being thoroughly reproduced.

I barely spend on new books anymore, the library, second hand and random pages on the Internet have lectured me on topics that would have never crossed my mind, and I have done my part translating and sharing. The effect that a free access on information can have on this world is more valuable than all the treasures barred behind prohibitively expensive subscriptions or private collections.

With seeds it is the same, and with even higher justification, as not only is it free to create new copies without destroying the older one, but the plant actively wants to do so, and we can reproduce them out of leaves or shoots instead of seeds, with no harm done to the original plant. This is encouraged by nature, so why should man discourage it? Our collective strength is built on cooperating our resources towards a common good, but if an old man can go to prison for sharing bulbs with his neighbour, this whole edifice will tumble until paying another middleman becomes as essential as water.

To pirate is to conserve, to reproduce is to keep life going, and the fruits of the future grow from the seeds planted today, both in the soil and in our heads.

The people are Britain have always stood as a welcoming people who show great kindness, humour, and manners, but all of that greatness has been abused by the traitors that stand within Parliament, the traitors that sell off our people for the benefit of the elites and their own back pocket.

The British people have continuously voted and voted and voted against mass immigration. We voted for a Britain that protects our family owned, local businesses over large monopolies. We have voted for a nation that seeks to protect the most vulnerable, our women and children.

What have the British got in return? Lies upon lies. They promised a stop to mass immigration. It has doubles and tripled. They promised that Brexit would benefit the little man. They pushed him to the side in favour of cheaper, foreign produce and companies. They promised that our women and children would be protected. Thousands of young women and children have been sexually exploited and their abuse covered up.

Who, throughout all of this, has enabled such policy to take place? Who has spent their time and resources arresting the men and women who call out the lies of the politicians? Who fearmongered and fined the British people into staying at home during lockdown when there was no legal law passed to do so? Who has helped imprison the men and women who have declared that they are sick to death of mass immigration and the many troubles that come with it? Who helped cover up the sickening abuse of thousands of British girls across the country?

The police.

So, it is now important to ask, who will save us from the police?

They have shown their colours with the rhetoric they use when describing the common men and women of Britain. The common men and women of Britain that want to see the most vulnerable protected, that don't want their children to be abused, that want to walk through their streets at night safely, that don't want groups of men loitering at corners taking photos of girls, that want to see their people's flag hoisted high in every town, that want to celebrate their people's achievements and culture, not shun.

Much is needed to be done to restore our nation to glory, and one is a reform of our police. We now know the truth - the police was once admired for commitment to protecting and helping our communities, now, they are simply the imposers of tyranny.

God provided us with that of free will. A free will to choose love. Without this freedom to choose it, then it is no longer love. Hyper-collectivism rids us of the free will provided to us by God. It creates a society which is controlled through force and order, where freedom and love is not a choice.

Hyper-collective states impose control over the masses through property and thought. Families and individuals are no longer allowed to own their own property, they are not allowed the ability to be self-reliant - they are at the mercy of the state.

Every aspect of life is controlled, removing individual thought and expression. Extreme order is the key to a hyper-collective state, whereby all must think and act the same. There is no freedom, there is no beauty. Every town and city looks the same. Every person and family must act the same, think the same, be the same.

This hyper-collectivism comes at the price of beauty; housing is built at a mass scale, stripping any detail and any sense of individual expression. Parks are overshadowed by monumental apartment blocks that seem to be copy and pasted across the land. Everything looks the same. Everything is the same. Everything is grey.

The results can be seen time and time again, especially within many socialist nations. Russia, China - tens of millions dead as a result of hyper-collectivism.

Socially, life is bleak for the people. Every town and city is the same. Every aspect of life is controlled by the state to ensure that the people act and think accordingly. There is no freedom, only slavery, for the people are slaves to the state.

The slaves are used as any other slave of the modern world, for economic benefit, with this being to the benefit of the state. The slaves are pushed every inch to achieve their 'collective goal'. They are set unachievable expectations with the threat of punishment if they do not succeed. As a result, the achievement of these expectations is often very different to the actual results, leading to many catastrophes. 30 million dead in China as a the result of starvation and famine. 7 million dead in Russia as the result of forced collectivisation.

The solution to the hyper-collectivism we often see attributed to socialism, is that of Distributism. Distributism offers a system in which families can live in true freedom, away from the grasps of big-business we see in raging capitalism and the clutches of the oppressive state of socialism. Families are provided the opportunity to own their own land and property, the ability to become self-reliant, and the freedom to think and act within the natural boundaries set by God, not man-made forced order.

In Communist China, there was a constant struggle between a distributist-like model and full collectivisation.

Collectivisation started with Mutual Aid Teams (MATs), where private ownership was maintained, but the Party encouraged peasants to work together. Alongside this, Supply and Marketing Cooperatives (SMCs) were introduced, where people bought in at equal prices for equal shares and voting rights. However, many peasants preferred selling to private traders, who then sold to the SMCs. In response, a law was passed requiring peasants to sell their surpluses directly to the SMCs at government-mandated prices.

Next came Elementary Agricultural Producers' Cooperatives (APCs) and Handicraft Cooperatives. Elementary APCs were larger collectives formed by merging MATs, with compensation based on both contributed capital and labour. The long-term plan was to replace these with Advanced APCs, which would compensate workers solely based on labour, removing any recognition of private property.

Handicraft Cooperatives were created for tradesmen in various crafts, with the aim of mechanising their industries out of existence. Membership in these cooperatives was deliberately limited to accelerate this process.

APCs developed slowly, and after a rush of poorly planned APC formations, peasants returned to private land ownership and trade. Many, when forced into APCs, slaughtered their own livestock rather than surrendering them to collective ownership. A similar reaction occurred in Soviet Russia, where collectivisation caused livestock numbers to be halved.

To further the collectivisation effort, Higher Agricultural Producers’ Cooperatives (HPCs) were introduced. These removed compensation based on labour and effectively forced peasants to join, as communist-controlled banks refused to lend to those outside the cooperative system. Despite this, food production only grew at an annual rate of 3.8% from 1953 onwards.

Total collectivisation followed with the creation of centrally planned communes, but productivity remained low. The population, now demoralised, faced the destruction of family structures and cultural identity. Communes frequently bulldozed over graveyards, elderly people were sent to so-called “happiness homes,” and children were placed in state-run schools to free their parents for labour.

This, combined with the disastrous agricultural policies of pseudo-scientific Lysenkoism, led to the Great Famine, which killed between 30 and 50 million people. In response to this catastrophe, the Communist Party was forced to restore private farming. Peasants were allowed private plots, secondary occupations, and access to local markets. Within five years, grain harvests returned to pre-Great Leap Forward levels.

Throughout collectivisation, the government repeatedly made concessions to private property in an attempt to pacify the masses, who consistently favoured private enterprise. Private property is not only a necessity but a fundamental right. History shows that those who abolish it ultimately create a new form of private property for themselves.

Communists justified these policies with claims of moral authority, yet they harboured contempt for the working class, who often resisted them. Mao and Stalin viewed peasants as inherently reactionary. Even today, the working class gravitates toward local and private ownership, valuing family and national identity.

A modern example of this tension is seen in progressive-led boycotts. Activists pledged to buy only from small businesses to pressure large corporations into compliance with their demands. Yet, if big businesses can be so easily forced, why not support small businesses consistently? A sustained movement in favour of small enterprises would naturally foster their growth and accessibility. Unfortunately, when political advocacy neglects property rights, it oscillates between supporting small businesses and inadvertently backing policies that threaten them. Unlike socialists, who explicitly aim to abolish private property, progressives have the opportunity to defend it - but only if they choose to do so.

In 2023, the UK recorded a population of 68.3 million; in 2022, a GDP per capita of £37,371. Our economy is the sixth largest in the world; our country is a developed first-world state by any metric. Our history, though chequered with tragedy and sin, is just as full of courage and charity. And yet to look upon the streets of our nation, strewn with litter, set ablaze by crime, and filled with the unfortunate and forgotten - our homeless, and our veterans - you would not think we are among the greatest in the world, but among its very lowest. What has happened to our country?

The Dickensian nightmare has come again. 11% of our population went hungry in 2023; 7.2 million of our people, and 17.2% of our children. 14.4 million Britons were in technical poverty in 2024: a full fifth of our nation. Wages and employment have remained steady, but the invisible rot of inflation leaves the poor poorer and the rich richer. Unemployment remains steady too, but the conditions under which we labour and the rights which we are afforded are degraded every day: zero-hour contracts; competition from companies abroad and immigrants within; and companies intent on chaining us to the machines which grind for others’ gold. The Mail, water, energy, rail: all of them are sacrificed upon the altar of profits. Waiting times multiply; pensions divide. A third of our income or more is stolen in taxes that disappear into vacuous bureaucracy or ridiculous foreign aid. The skyscrapers in Canary Wharf build higher, sure, but the native British, and Christian demographics plummet, and - just as there is no China without the Chinese, no Africa without the Africans - what is a Britain without the British?

The learned men of the 18th and 19th centuries discussed the “Condition-of-England”: the incredible question of how their country, the Empire that ruled the world, could at once master such wealth and power, and yet host so many poor and neglected? We see this question come again now! How did we sink so low? It's not the unintended ravages of industrialisation this time, nor any fault of the technological error - by my measure, at least - in which we live. It is the comfort and laziness we have engendered into our modern society; the naive compassion to treat everybody and nobody as British all at once. The systems built for Britain have worked for Britain, but they will not work when we knock down the walls of our society, which our ancestors rightfully and purposefully built, to allow in those who do not care for our institutions, our people, nor our flag. We are nurturing, with every welfare payment and asylum invitation, those who go on to be taught - by our own education system no less - how ‘racist’ and ‘guilty’ us White Britons are. They are taught to hate the hallowed ground of nation on which they walk, to despise the customs and traditions by which England, then Britain, soared to heights sublime, for they know us only by the chains we cast on slaves, and the resources which we fetched with them. Never mentioned are the scientists and philosophers, the engineers and inventors, the just kings and their wise queens. Where would the world be without the British? Certainly, the Indians whom we proscribed from war through the unification of their continent; the Africans whose chains we struck through with our global abolitionism; and the natives everywhere else, who bore and bear the fruits of our technology, infrastructure, science and administration; all of these would enjoy not a mote of the modern world in which they now reside.

What is the ‘Condition of Britain’? It is as unbelievable as it is abysmal. It plunges us down to the living standard of a third world state, with all the delusions of a first world one. But as social awareness, political agitation, and continued stalwartness in the face of struggle and hopelessness carried the Victorians out of their own smog and starvation and into the future, so too is there a future for us! We have the strength in our arms, and in our numbers, and lack only the will and organisation: together, we could lay that golden road to Calvary in an instant, the whole necrotic and nepotistic world be damned.

Decry mass immigration and the detritus it brings to our shores, which steals billions from out of our hands to feed to the ungrateful and un-British! Decry the media, who pour poison in one ear to sink shame and self-doubt into our culture’s heart. Decry even more the political treachery at home: despise Westminster politics, where the ‘esteemed’ members vote amongst themselves to beggar us to the world with foreign aid and privatisation, to legalise our suicide, to conscript our young men to foreign wars, and to bury the rape of our children. Britain can save itself, but we cannot keep marching down the same road. We must abandon that which has driven us here. We need truly representative parliamentary democracy. We need accountability for the ruling class, who continuously lie and endanger us. We need a fierce, unrepentant, and ecumenical nationalist movement of all four British nations. Is an easy life worth living? Is a quiet and fearful existence amidst the wreck of our once peerless nation enough? No, it is not!
