It seems logical. You set the goal, do the work, and get the result. However, biology doesn't always work that way. This shows up across many outcomes, but weight loss is perhaps the clearest example.

When weight loss is the goal, the most obvious actions are restriction and output. You’ve been told you need to eat less and move more. For some people it produces a result. But for many, particularly those carrying a lot, what I call the load, it does not always work the way they expect. If that sounds familiar, you are not imagining it. Your body does not always respond the way you think it should. Or it responds for a while, and then it stops.

When the body is under load

The body has a clear hierarchy of priorities. Survival comes before everything else. When your body is under chronic stress, whether that stress comes from work, disrupted sleep, under-nourishing, over-exercising, or the sustained weight of a life that keeps asking more than it gives back, it responds accordingly. It shifts toward protection.

In that state, cortisol stays elevated, and persistently elevated stress hormones are one of several factors that may contribute to abdominal fat accumulation. Cortisol also promotes protein breakdown, which over time and alongside inadequate nutrition or recovery can make it harder to maintain muscle.

So if you are restricting calories and training hard while already running on empty, you may find yourself losing muscle while holding onto fat. The scale may barely move. Your clothes may feel the same, or even worse. You are working harder and getting less back, and it can be difficult to understand why.

There is more to it than cortisol. Chronic stress affects insulin sensitivity, which makes blood sugar harder to regulate. Blood sugar fluctuations can contribute to hunger, cravings, and energy crashes, making healthy habits harder to sustain over time. Restricting food intake in that context often makes the cycle harder to break, not easier.

Why restriction alone often backfires

Prolonged calorie restriction can also reduce energy expenditure. Changes in thyroid hormone activity are one of several ways the body adapts to perceived scarcity. Your body interprets restriction as a signal that resources are limited and adjusts accordingly. This is your body doing exactly what it is designed to do.

As weight decreases, the body can make changes that encourage energy balance to be restored. Hunger signals may increase, energy expenditure may decrease, and the drive to eat may become stronger. These are not failures of willpower. They are predictable biological responses designed to protect survival.

This is why approaches built only around restriction often struggle over time. They focus on forcing the outcome without addressing the conditions that influence whether that outcome can be maintained.

Food is more than calories

Calories provide energy, but food also provides information. Every meal carries signals that influence hormones, blood sugar, muscle protein synthesis, satiety, and countless other biological processes. A 500-calorie meal made up primarily of refined, ultra-processed foods sends very different signals than 500 calories rich in protein, fiber, healthy fats, and minimally processed carbohydrates.

If your body is already under load, the quality of those signals becomes even more important. Restricting calories without providing the nutrients your body needs may add another layer of stress, making it harder to preserve muscle, regulate appetite, recover well, and support the very metabolic processes you’re hoping to improve.

Sleep changes the equation

Disrupted sleep, which is common when you are carrying a high load, affects the hormones that regulate hunger and satiety. It increases appetite, particularly for fast-energy foods, and reduces your body’s capacity to use fat as fuel.

Sleep also shapes how your body responds to a calorie deficit. In one controlled study, participants followed the same calorie-restricted diet, but one group slept 8.5 hours per night while the other slept just 5.5 hours. Both groups lost a similar amount of weight, but the well-rested group lost considerably more fat, while the sleep-deprived group lost substantially more lean muscle tissue.

In other words, sleep didn’t just influence how much weight they lost. It influenced what they lost.

Understanding your biology changes the conversation

One of the most damaging assumptions in health and weight loss is that difficulty changing behavior is a reflection of character. If you struggle to follow through, the conclusion is often: I need more discipline. I need more willpower.

But behavior does not happen in isolation. Every decision is made within a biological context. Sleep, stress, hunger, energy availability, and our environment all influence our ability to regulate behavior.

When the body is under sustained load, the brain is not operating under the same conditions as it would when it is rested, nourished, and recovered. A person who is sleep deprived, under-eating, highly stressed, and constantly exposed to highly rewarding foods is not starting from the same place as someone whose basic biological needs are supported.

This does not remove personal agency. It changes the question. Instead of asking, “Why can’t I be more disciplined?” we can ask, “What conditions would make this easier to sustain?”

When the focus shifts, something changes

When the focus shifts from the goal to the conditions, something different becomes possible.

Supporting sleep, blood sugar stability, stress regulation, nourishment, and recovery creates a different internal environment. The body's stress response becomes less chronically activated. Insulin sensitivity often improves as sleep, physical activity, nutrition, and stress management improve. Muscle is preserved and built, not simply because strength matters, but because healthy muscle becomes one of the body's greatest allies for regulating blood sugar and supporting metabolic health. The body is no longer receiving the same signals of prolonged scarcity. Instead, it begins to sense that the environment is safe enough to function as it was designed to.

Often, people notice improvements in energy, sleep, mood, or recovery before changes in body composition become apparent, because the conditions finally allow it. The outcome you originally wanted tends to follow. It just cannot lead.

This reframe is important as it looks towards a long term way of living versus a goal that once achieved can be undone. The conditions that support real body composition change are the same conditions that produce better energy, a more stable mood, and more consistent sleep. These are not all separate goals you need to work towards, they are the same system responding to the same inputs.

What this actually looks like

It looks like a different relationship with what health means. Eating in a way that keeps your blood sugar stable and nourishes. Sleeping in a way that allows your body to recover. Moving in a way that builds capacity rather than depletes it. Reducing the chronic load where possible, and building the conditions that allow your body to recover when that load cannot be reduced.

Of course, health is influenced by more than the conditions we create. Genetics, disease, injury, infection, and factors outside our control all shape how our bodies function. Supporting the conditions for health is not a guarantee of a particular outcome. It is about giving your biology the best opportunity to respond well.

These are the foundations.

The conditions that shape our biology are not fixed throughout life. As we age, hormonal changes, shifting sleep patterns, changes in muscle mass, and the cumulative load of life can all alter how our bodies respond. It is not unusual for approaches that once worked well to become less effective. That doesn't necessarily mean you need to try harder by doing more of what worked before. It may mean the conditions your body needs have changed.

When the conditions are supported, your body is better able to move toward health. Changes in body composition often become more achievable, even if they don’t happen as quickly as diet culture promises.

That is a different starting point. And in my experience, it is the one that actually holds.

Subscribe now

Disclaimer: This article is for educational purposes only. The moment advice starts to sound like an obligation, the response is often resistance rather than action. This is not because the advice is wrong. It’s usually because the framing triggers a defensive response. Psychologists call this psychological reactance.

Health is particularly loaded territory for this, because health advice rarely stays neutral. It carries an implied judgment: you are doing something wrong. Which is where it stops being about behavior and starts being about something much closer to home.

Most health approaches frame change as an information problem. If you just understood why sleep matters, you would prioritize it. But that is not how it works, because the behavior is not just a behavior. It is part of how you understand yourself. The person who stays up late to have quiet time is not making a bad decision. They are protecting something that matters to them.

When health advice asks you to change a behavior, it is often asking you to revise an identity. People will defend identity long before they update information. This is why being told what to do feels different from understanding what your body is responding to. One asks for compliance. The other invites understanding.

There's another reason change feels so difficult. Our brains are constantly weighing what feels good now against what might matter later. Health change asks you to give up something real today for something uncertain tomorrow. The brain weighs immediate experience far more heavily than future benefit. The cost is real in the short term, and the return on that cost is abstract, delayed, and not guaranteed. Most health interventions are designed as though the rational option is the obvious one. They do not account for this.

And underneath all of it, for many, health can start to feel like a long list of things they are supposed to be doing. The sheer volume of health “shoulds” creates fatigue. It starts to feel like being managed, not supported. Like the body is a project that requires constant correction rather than a system with its own logic worth understanding.

There's another challenge we don't talk about enough: people are trying to make health decisions in a world full of conflicting advice. When every recommendation sounds authoritative but points in a different direction, it's hard to know what to trust. And when trust in the information starts to erode, many people default to, I'll stick with what I know. Not because they've stopped caring about their health, but because they've stopped believing anyone really knows the answer.

What cuts through this is not more information. It is a framework that makes sense of your individual experience. When you understand the mechanism behind what your body is doing, you stop needing to outsource your judgment. You can evaluate information against your own experience rather than waiting for someone else to tell you what to think. That is the thinking behind Foundations First. Not adding more to an already full plate, but understanding what the body has been carrying and what it actually needs.

When the starting point shifts from “here is what you are doing wrong” to “here is what your body has been carrying,” the whole dynamic changes. You are not being corrected. You are being understood.

Resistance drops when people feel understood, not judged. When advice fits their situation instead of a generic protocol. When change fits a real life instead of an ideal one.

The person who seems resistant isn't resisting health. They're responding to advice that doesn't account for how people actually change.

Health isn’t just about giving people better information. It’s about creating the conditions in which change becomes possible.

That is where the work starts.

Niamh
<p class="button-wrapper" You're just functioning well enough that nothing is forcing the issue. That is a different problem that requires a different answer.

You’re wired for efficiency. A behavior you have done a thousand times requires almost no conscious processing. A new behavior requires attention, decision-making, and repetition before it becomes automatic. That takes energy.

This is what behavioral scientists call habit inertia. The tendency of an established pattern to continue not because it is working well, but because it is already running. Changing it means overriding a process that has been made automatic. Good intentions are rarely enough to do that.

There is a second layer. Almost every meaningful health outcome is the result of compounding behaviors over months and years. The payoff is real. It is also distant, and uncertain in its timing. The cost of changing arrives immediately: the effort, the disruption, the friction of doing something differently. The brain, built for an environment where immediate threats were the only real threats, reliably chooses now over later. This is present bias. It is a feature of a nervous system that was not designed with long-term health planning in mind.

Health decline compounds this as the body rarely announces the arrival of a problem clearly. It adapts, compensates, borrows from other systems. You are tired, but you are also busy. Your energy is lower than it used to be, but you are a few years older. Your capacity has shifted, but so has your load. Every signal has a plausible alternative explanation. The body keeps functioning, and so the threshold for action never quite arrives. You feel well enough to continue.

Individual psychology is only part of it. The other side is external context. The environment you’re in can support or hinder change. You tend to eat what the people around you eat. You carry similar ideas about what counts as normal stress and acceptable exhaustion. These become norms. You don’t have to think about it because it is the way it is, but it comes with a cost. Usually later.

And then there is identity. Over time, behavior becomes self-concept. The way you manage your time, handle stress, fuel your day: these stop being things you do and start being things you are. Change asks you to become someone different. The brain resists that as strongly as it resists a physical threat. This is why so many women describe lasting health change as a shift in how they see themselves, not just in what they do.

A health crisis cuts through all of this at once. It creates urgency where there was none and turns a distant consequence into a present one. It also simplifies. When the body makes its position clear, competing priorities collapse into one, and clarity arrives without effort. The identity shift becomes socially acceptable as you were forced to evolve. This is why so many lasting changes follow a significant event. Crisis creates the conditions that make change necessary.

The problem is that crisis is not a strategy. It is a gamble on timing. But the conditions it creates can be built deliberately.

You can get curious about where your current patterns are heading. You can identify what the body is actually responding to and communicating. You may find it is hard to ignore a pattern you understand. Motivation tends to follow when change is connected to what already matters and your capacity to show up for the things and people that count.

The first step is deciding that today is reason enough.

Niamh · NeveWell

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Avoid that. Stop doing the other thing.

And it's hard to say exactly when that happened. For most of human history, health wasn't a set of rules people had to consciously follow. It was the natural result of how people lived: how they ate, moved, rested, connected, and spent their time. The foundations were baked into daily life without anyone calling them that.

Somewhere between industrialization, ultra-processed food, chronic overwork, and an industry built on selling solutions to problems it helped create, the framing shifted. Health became something you had to discipline yourself into. A constant negotiation between what you wanted and what you were supposed to do.

No wonder it feels hard.

When the entire conversation is organized around restriction and must-dos, of course change feels like sacrifice. Of course people resist it. Of course it doesn’t hold.

But what if we’ve been looking at this the wrong way?

Consider what it actually looks like to support your health well. Not in an idealized, Instagram-filtered version of life. In a real one.

You eat food that genuinely nourishes your body: whole, varied, prepared with some thought. Meals that taste delicious and give your body what it needs to function. Not a protocol. Not a calorie tracker. Real food.

You protect your sleep. Not as a performance metric, but because your body does extraordinary things during those hours. It repairs tissue, consolidates memory, regulates stress hormones, and restores the energy reserves that make everything else possible. You create conditions for that to happen and feel the benefits.

You move in ways that feel worthwhile. A walk outside, where you happen to notice things. Strength work that gives you confidence in your body. Something that connects you to the physical world rather than depleting you further. Something you enjoy.

You spend time with people who matter. Not as a box to tick, but because connection is something the nervous system actually needs. It is not optional. It is physiological.

You create some breathing room in your environment. Not a minimalist overhaul, but enough space that your surroundings feel like somewhere you can rest rather than somewhere that adds to your load.

You find time to be absorbed in something: a book you can’t put down, a project that engages you, a walk that takes you somewhere unexpected. The kind of thing that makes time feel different.

And if you are somewhere in midlife, running a household, raising children, and holding a career together at the same time, that description might have read more like a fantasy. But the point is not to do all of it perfectly. It is to recognize that none of it is restrictive. It is a direction, and small movements in that direction count.

Read that back. That is not a list of sacrifices. That is a description of a good life.

And when you actually start living that way, even imperfectly, something shifts. There is less room for the things that were filling the space before. Not because you forced them out, but because the need for them changes. When you are genuinely well-rested and well-nourished and not running on cortisol, you make different choices. The glass of wine every night becomes something you have when you want it, not something you need to decompress. The sugar or caffeine cravings that felt non-negotiable at 3pm turn out to have been your body asking for something else entirely. The hours of passive screen time give way to things that feel more like living.

“When the foundations are right, the right choices stop feeling like choices.”

This is not willpower. It is what happens when the foundations are in place.

The restriction and rules model fails not because people lack discipline. It fails because it misidentifies the problem. It treats health as a matter of controlling behavior, when the more useful question is: what conditions make it easier for the body to function well, and for a person to actually want to live that way?

That is a different question. And it leads somewhere different.

It leads away from rules and toward understanding. Away from restriction and toward something that, when you look at it clearly, you might actually want.

Health change feels hard when it’s framed as loss. It feels different when you recognize what you’re moving toward.
<p class="button-wrapper" I knew it wasn’t going to be a great workout. It wasn’t one of those days where you feel strong, motivated, or ready to push yourself.

But I went anyway.

I didn’t push beyond what felt right, and I didn’t try to make up for anything. It wasn’t my best session, but I showed up. And I realized it’s better to show up and give what you have than not show up at all.

This wasn’t the first time I’d shown up when I wasn’t at 100%, but the difference this time was that there was no internal debate leading up to it. No back-and-forth in my head trying to justify whether to go or not.

There was a time when the question I asked myself was, “Do I feel like it today?” And if the answer was no, I would skip it or tell myself I’d go tomorrow, when I had more energy or more time.

Now, my mindset is different. It’s no longer a question of how I feel. It has simply become part of how I live.

When something becomes non-negotiable, it stops being a daily decision. It’s just what you do. And within that, there’s still flexibility, because showing up doesn’t always mean going all in.

This is where so many people get stuck. They believe it has to be all or nothing. But the body doesn’t work like that. The body responds to patterns, not one-offs. One workout doesn’t define your progress, just like one missed day doesn’t undo it.

Consistency isn’t about intensity. It’s about continuity.

And within that, capacity matters. Some days you can lift heavy or move with intensity. Other days, your energy is lower, your stress is higher, or your body is asking for something different. Your hormones, your sleep, and your nervous system all influence what you have available on any given day.

That doesn’t mean you do nothing. It means you adapt.

And that creates a very different relationship with health.

This isn’t about checking a box or forcing yourself through something. It’s about designing a life that supports your health. It’s about building movement, and other foundational habits, into the structure of your day so they’re not something you try to squeeze in when everything else is done.

Part of that is finding what you enjoy. It might not feel that way at first, but through experimenting and trying new things, you may discover something that brings you joy and naturally becomes a non-negotiable.

So what if the goal isn’t to feel motivated?

What if the goal is to decide what’s non-negotiable, and then learn how to show up within your current capacity, even when it’s not perfect?

Not with pressure or guilt, but with a different standard.

Because the real shift isn’t just in what you do. It’s in how you see yourself. And once that changes, showing up becomes a lot simpler.
<p class="button-wrapper" Sleep more. Manage stress. Eat better. Move your body. For many of us, the next step is understanding why it matters. It starts there, but for most, it doesn’t end there.

Take stress. I grew up hearing statements like “stress kills.” I heard that chronic stress isn’t good for your body and that cortisol plays a role in how the body responds. But nobody explained why that mattered or what actually happens in our body.

So then you go a bit deeper and learn about the power of the stress response.

When under threat, either from emotional, physical, or environmental stress, the body goes into survival mode.

Cortisol makes energy available by releasing glucose into the bloodstream. I learned this the hard way when my HbA1c increased during a particularly high-stress period in my corporate career. My diet hadn’t changed, but my body’s response had.

It also helps the body prioritize. Resources shift toward the brain, heart, and muscles, and away from digestion, reproduction, and long-term repair. It supports blood pressure and circulation so you can stay alert and upright, and it helps regulate inflammation so the system doesn’t overreact while you’re dealing with a stressor.

The issue isn’t that cortisol rises. It’s when the demand doesn’t let up. When stress becomes chronic, the system doesn’t fully switch off. Processes that are helpful, and pretty incredible when you think about it, in the short term continue running in the background. Over time, resources stay pulled away from repair and processes that support long-term health.

But if understanding why chronic stress is harmful were enough, more people would make changes to better support their health.

For some people, understanding this “why” is enough to start to make changes to improve their health. But often, this kind of motivation isn’t enough or doesn’t last.

And it’s not always as simple as doing the “right” things, as for many people, stress isn’t something they feel they can easily change. It can be shaped by circumstances, responsibilities, or patterns that have been in place for years.

Supporting your health in the context of chronic stress can look like improving sleep, nutrition, and movement. But it can also look like something less visible like creating boundaries and doing the slower, harder work of healing.

So maybe the missing piece isn’t just understanding the science. Maybe it’s understanding your why.

This is where you don’t just ask, “Why is stress harmful?” You also ask, “Why does this matter to me?”

Because understanding the biology doesn’t always change behavior, but connecting it to your life can. What’s your intrinsic motivation? Maybe it’s linked to your interests, values, and passions. Maybe you make the changes needed to support your nervous system so that you can live in alignment with what matters most to you. And the answer to that is yours to discover.

Intrinsic motivation is a much sought-after quality.

“Perhaps no single phenomenon reflects the positive potential of human nature as much as intrinsic motivation, the inherent tendency to seek out novelty and challenges, to extend and exercise one’s capacities, to explore, and to learn” (Ryan & Deci, 2000).

Understanding the science can open the door.

But lasting change often comes from something deeper.

Not just understanding the why.

But understanding your why.

And seeing yourself as someone capable of living in alignment with it.

What’s your intrinsic motivation? Mine is below.

<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://nevewell.substack.com/p/if-knowing-was-enough-wed-all-be/comments","text":"Leave a We assume that if something is working, we should see results quickly.

But the habits that influence health rarely show their impact right away.

When results aren’t obvious, it’s natural to wonder whether the effort is worth it.
When shifts happen gradually, it can feel like nothing is changing.

Our bodies often change in ways that are subtle at first.

Improving our health often looks less like putting out a fire and more like slowly cooling the embers.

Think about how many health patterns develop slowly over time.

Low-grade inflammation, for example, can simmer quietly in the background for years before it becomes noticeable. Like a small ember that slowly grows into a fire.

By the time symptoms appear, the fire has usually been building for a while.

Improving our health often works the same way in reverse.

When we start supporting the body differently, we’re not putting out the fire overnight.

We’re slowly cooling the system.
Dampening the embers.
Restoring balance little by little.

During that process, it’s easy to assume nothing is changing.

But the body is often doing important work behind the scenes.

This is also where many people stop.

They begin to feel a little better and assume the work is done.
Or they lose motivation because the improvements are subtle.

But the systems that regulate our health respond to patterns over time.

Consistency is what allows those systems to recalibrate.

The body is always responding to the life we are living.

Another reason progress can be difficult to recognize is how our brains are wired.

Our brains naturally scan for problems.

From an evolutionary perspective, this helped keep us safe.
We’re quick to notice discomfort or things that feel wrong.

But we’re much slower to notice when things improve.

When pain decreases gradually, we adapt.
When energy improves slowly, it becomes the new normal.

We forget how things used to feel.

Often the realization of progress comes unexpectedly.

You see a photo of yourself and notice something has changed.

You realize you haven’t had a migraine in months.
Your stomach no longer bloats after most meals.
You’re sleeping through the night more often.
You handle stressful moments with more calm.

These shifts rarely happen overnight.

They emerge from many small decisions repeated day after day.

Better health isn’t something we simply find. It’s something we build over time.

Real progress often looks boring while it’s happening.

But those daily habits are often what slowly turn the fire down.

And because the only constant in life is change, the direction of that change is shaped by the patterns we repeat most often.

NeveWell
Live Well. thoughts and start feeling like truth. Like this is just who I am. But I’m not sure it’s always who we are.

Often, it’s the perspective we learned. A way of interpreting what’s happening around us based on what we’ve lived through.

And over time, that perspective becomes a lens. A filter we look through without realizing we’re wearing it.

We don’t experience life directly. We experience it through interpretation. Through patterns shaped early on. Through environments that taught us what to expect and how to stay safe. None of that is random. It was adaptive.

Eventually, the lens becomes invisible. It feels like reality instead of interpretation.

And over time it does more than shape how we see the world. It shapes how we see ourselves.

The lens defines what feels possible and that changes everything when we try to change.

This matters a lot when it comes to health. When we try to build a habit, create a routine, rest more, eat differently, or set boundaries, we assume the struggle is about discipline.

But often it’s about the lens and what it tells us we’re capable of.

Change begins with awareness. With recognizing that the lens exists and understanding that it can shift. Awareness creates space and in that space, you can choose differently.

Sustainable health change begins with noticing the lens, and questioning why we believe what we believe.

At some point in life, you realize it’s not just what you’re carrying that matters, it’s what you’re carrying that was never yours to hold.

There are things we can control, things we can influence, and things that are outside of our control.

This idea is often visualized as the Circle of Control, sometimes called the Circle of Concern and Influence, popularized by Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. At its core, it’s a simple but powerful reminder: not everything deserves the same amount of our energy.

Most of us understand this intellectually. But in practice, much of our mental and emotional energy ends up spent in the outer circle, the circle of concern. We worry about outcomes, other people’s choices, the timing of things, the state of the world, or how something should have gone. We replay conversations. We anticipate problems. We carry situations that aren’t actually ours to solve.

And while this can feel like being responsible or prepared, the nervous system experiences it very differently.

To the body, ongoing mental and emotional stress isn’t abstract. It’s a signal of threat.

When the brain perceives ongoing uncertainty, pressure, or lack of control, it shifts physiology into protection mode. Stress hormones rise. Repair, digestion, immune function, and recovery move down the priority list. This isn’t a failure. It’s adaptation, but adaptation has a cost.

Over time, living in this state can show up as fatigue, poor sleep, persistent inflammation, mood changes, brain fog, or a sense of “not feeling like yourself.” Not because something is fundamentally wrong but because the system is constantly being asked to stay on high alert.

This is where the Circle of Control becomes more than a mindset tool. It becomes a health tool.

Energy is finite. Where attention, worry, and effort are placed matters—physiologically, not just emotionally—because the body doesn’t have unlimited resources. When energy is repeatedly allocated toward bracing for what might happen, managing what isn’t ours to manage, or mentally rehearsing outcomes we can’t control, fewer resources are available for repair, hormone balance, digestion, immune regulation, and cellular recovery.

The nervous system and endocrine (hormonal) system are constantly communicating. When the ongoing signal is “stay alert,” the body prioritizes protection over restoration or reproduction. Stress hormones remain elevated, and systems responsible for repair, hormone balance, digestion, immune regulation, and recovery receive fewer resources. Over time, that trade-off can begin to look like burnout, cycle irregularities, disrupted sleep, increased susceptibility to illness, or slower healing.

In seasons of hormonal transition, like perimenopause, when estrogen and progesterone are already fluctuating, the system is inherently more sensitive. If the body is also navigating chronic stress signals, those hormonal shifts can feel amplified. Symptoms such as hot flashes, mood changes, sleep disruption, heavier or irregular cycles, and fatigue may become more pronounced when the system has less capacity to buffer additional strain.

Stress has many sources. Some are simply part of living. Some are unavoidable.

You can’t always just leave a stressful job. You can’t bypass the strain of caregiving, financial pressure, relationship challenges, health concerns, or the stress of loss and grief. Hormonal shifts, like those in perimenopause, aren’t optional either. Some stressors are real, structural, and outside of immediate control.

But this is one place we have some agency — not over the circumstance itself, but over where our attention and energy are directed.

Each time even a small amount of focus shifts away from what can’t be controlled and back toward what can, the nervous system receives a different signal: safety and steadiness.

This doesn’t mean ignoring real challenges or pretending things are easy. It means choosing to invest limited energy where it can actually support healing, resilience, and forward movement.

Stress isn’t just about how much is on your plate.

It’s also about how much of your life you’re carrying that was never yours to hold.

Understanding this is awareness.

Consistently shifting where you place your energy teaches your nervous system something new.

<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://nevewell.substack.com/subscribe?","text":"Subscribe Not quick fixes. Not hype. Just real-life health, in real life.

In this first week, I shared four pieces:

1. But with all the health and wellness trends out there, how do we decide what actually deserves our time and money, especially in the context of how people really create lasting change in their lives?

Every week, there seems to be something new on the market. A new protocol. A new supplement. A new trend. Some of it is interesting and probably helpful. But a lot of it is… just a lot.

The wellness industry is massive, valued at trillions globally and growing fast. And with that scale comes a real question: when profit and novelty drive the narrative, are people’s long-term outcomes actually the priority?

It makes me wonder: how do we each decide what’s worth our time and money when it comes to our health? It’s an individual, personal question. We each have autonomy over our own health.

Because both time and money are currencies. They both have value. And most of us have limited amounts of each.

Here’s a question I’ve started asking myself when it comes to prioritizing how I invest in my health:

Is my intention to do this consistently enough for it to become part of my life?

Not in a judgmental way. Just as a reality check. Sometimes I need to try something before I can answer that question, and that’s okay too. But asking it brings awareness and helps me avoid spending money mindlessly.

I’ve noticed that when something only works in short bursts of motivation, it usually doesn’t stick. And health, at least in my experience, isn’t built in bursts. It’s built through repetition. Routines and habits need to be simple enough to be sustained, and any monthly cost tied to them needs to feel manageable over time. Through finding what brings you some amount of joy or value. Through consistency. That’s the part that actually changes things.

You can spend a lot of energy chasing the next “upgrade” while the basics are still doing most of the heavy lifting in the background.

More and more, I’m less interested in what’s impressive and more interested in what’s repeatable: how and what you eat, how you sleep, how you move your body, how you manage stress and regulate your nervous system, how you reduce your toxic burden, getting outside, prioritizing community and meaningful connection. Most of these primarily require an investment of time, not money.

And when it comes to what I do spend money on, I find myself asking questions like:

Is this a supplement or support my body actually needs? Am I truly lacking it, or have I explored other ways to address it?

Is this a tool that’s supported by evidence and something I’ll realistically keep using long enough to make a difference?

Is this helping me build something sustainable, or just giving me a short-term sense of progress? And maybe that’s okay sometimes, as long as I’m clear about what it is.

So I’m curious:

How do you decide what’s worth your time and what’s worth your money?
Do you think about those as currencies in your own life?

For me, the biggest shifts haven’t come from doing more.
They’ve come from doing simpler things more consistently.

And that change hasn’t always been easy. It’s woven into motivation, time, energy, mood, and the reality of being human, so it will always be a work in progress.

Knowing what supports us is one thing. Learning how to actually live it, especially when life is full, is something else entirely.

That space between knowing and doing, consistently, is the part I find most interesting and important.
<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://nevewell.substack.com/subscribe?","text":"Subscribe length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

In a practice session for motivational interviewing this week, we explored something that shows up in almost every conversation about change: ambivalence.

The person I was working with knew what helped regulate their nervous system and why it mattered for their particular health challenge. They had tools and understood the benefits of a proactive approach. And yet, they weren’t doing those things consistently.

When we slowed the conversation down, something emerged: doing the practices reminded them of their health challenges. And with that reminder came grief—grief for the life they once had, or thought they would have.

So they avoided it.

I see this pattern a lot. In myself and in others.

We don’t start the habit we know would help.
We don’t keep the routine we said we wanted.
We put off the changes we’ve already decided matter.

Not because we’re lazy or unmotivated but because sometimes change asks us to accept something we’re not ready to accept yet.

In motivational interviewing, this is ambivalence: wanting change and not wanting it at the same time. Wanting to feel better, and also not wanting the daily reminder of what’s different now.

Sometimes the real barrier isn’t time, discipline, or willpower. Sometimes it’s grief—the sadness of letting go of an old version of yourself. Or fatigue. And sometimes, not doing the thing is a way of not having to face that yet.

What if the practices that support you aren’t evidence that something is wrong but small, daily ways of being on your own side, a way of meeting yourself where you are now?

If you recognize yourself here, maybe the first step isn’t doing more.

Maybe it’s getting curious about what change is really asking of you and being a little kinder to the part of you that’s still learning how to say yes to this next chapter.

Some stress in life is real and unavoidable. Big, heavy things that deserve to be taken seriously.

But alongside those real stressors, there’s another layer of stress most of us carry every day—the kind that doesn’t come directly from what’s happening, but from what happens in our minds about what’s happening.

There’s an important distinction Joseph Nguyen makes in his book Don’t Believe Everything You Think: the difference between a thought and thinking.

A thought is something that arises.
Thinking is what we do with that thought.

A thought might be: The lab results might be bad.
Thinking is replaying that thought, adding to it, building stories around it, running scenarios, and emotionally living inside all of those scenarios before anything has even happened.

Our experiences shape our beliefs.
Our beliefs shape the kinds of thoughts that show up.
And then our thinking is what turns it into stress.

Here’s the simple truth:

You don’t have to believe every thought you have.
And you don’t have to keep thinking every thought that shows up.

A thought can be acknowledged without being followed.

You can notice it.
You can name it.
And, if it isn’t helpful, you can let it pass without turning it into a story.

This isn’t about forcing positive thinking or pretending challenges don’t exist. It’s about recognizing the difference between what arises in the mind and what you choose to engage with.

You can’t stop thoughts from appearing. That’s just part of being human. But you can change your relationship to them. You can start to see which ones are serving you and which ones are noise.

Over time, this creates a shift and you realize you’ve less mental friction and unnecessary stress. More space between what happens and how you respond.

If this idea of separating a thought from thinking is helpful, Joseph Nguyen’s Don’t Believe Everything You Think explores it further with simple, practical ways to apply it day to day.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Not perfectly. Not with everything figured out. Just starting.

This post is my first step. It’s me getting moving on building my health coaching business instead of waiting for it to be “ready.” It’s me choosing progress over perfection.

It feels fitting that this is the Year of the Fire Horse - about movement, momentum, and forward motion. Less overthinking. More doing.

It’s the same with any change we try to make in life—whether it’s exercising more, cutting back on alcohol, eating better, prioritizing sleep, or making time for self-care. The first step is always the hardest. Time passes, and we’re still talking about making changes.

What I’d like to build here is a space for real-life health, real-life change, and small, consistent steps that actually add up. No quick fixes, or all-or-nothing thinking. Just foundations, habits, and momentum.

If you’ve been waiting for the right time or the right plan consider this your nudge. You don’t have to have it all figured out to take the first step.

I’m really glad you’re here. And if this is the beginning for you too, I’d love you to walk it with me.

Niamh

NeveWell | Live Well.
