Tiny turtle hatchlings are starting to appear across Massachusetts as late-summer nests begin to open, and wildlife experts say the best help most people can offer is surprisingly simple: don’t intervene.

“Tiny turtle hatchlings are beginning to emerge from their nests across Massachusetts. You come across one on a trail, in your yard, or crossing a road, and the best thing you can do is let it continue on its way,” the Wildlife Rehabilitators’ Association of Massachusetts (WRAM) said in a recent message.

One of the biggest misconceptions, WRAM notes, is that a hatchling spotted alone must be lost. In reality, “one thing that surprises many people is that baby turtles are never raised by their mothers. Once she lays her eggs, a mother turtle’s job is done.” According to the organization, “hatchlings are completely independent from the moment they emerge from their nest.”

That independence is why relocating a baby turtle, no matter how well-intentioned, can do more harm than good. “Although it’s tempting to carry a hatchling to the nearest pond or stream, healthy baby turtles know where they’re going,” WRAM explained. If the turtle is “alert, active, and walking with purpose, the best thing you can do is let it continue its journey.”

There is one common scenario where a careful assist may be appropriate: road crossings. “If it’s crossing a road, you can carefully move it in the direction it was already traveling,” WRAM advised, emphasizing that the direction matters because it reflects where the turtle is already trying to go.

What WRAM cautions against is the “better home” impulse, moving a hatchling to water or a different wetland that seems safer. “Never relocate it to a pond, stream, or different wetland, even if it looks like a better home,” the group wrote. And while hatchlings can be hard to resist, WRAM stresses they should stay wild: “please don’t take hatchlings home as pets or souvenirs. The greatest gift you can give them is the chance to live the life nature intended.”

If you’re worried a turtle may be hurt, the guidance changes. “If the turtle appears injured or sick, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for guidance,” WRAM said. A painted turtle rescued in Massachusetts is expected to make a full recovery after becoming hooked in fishing gear, according to a post shared by Newhouse Wildlife Rescue, a nonprofit wildlife rescue that helps injured and orphaned wildlife in the state. “This painted turtle had a rough weekend,” the organization wrote, adding that the “good news is the hook is now out and this little one is expected to make a full recovery.”

In its announcement, Newhouse Wildlife Rescue also highlighted why painted turtles matter to local waterways, describing them as “natural cleaners” because “they consume carrion, dead fish, and decaying plants.” The group explained that this role “helps the environment by preventing the buildup of harmful toxins like ammonia and phosphorus in the water,” showing how one animal’s everyday behavior supports a healthier ecosystem.

But the rescue’s message centered on a broader warning about human impact, especially improperly discarded fishing gear. “They weren’t built to clean our trash…,” Newhouse Wildlife Rescue emphasized, urging the public: “Please dispose of fishing gear properly.” The organization’s post is an important reminder that small choices, like securing and disposing of hooks and line, can prevent needless injuries to wildlife.

The National Marine Life Center (NMLC), an independent nonprofit marine animal hospital, science, and education center based in Bourne, Massachusetts, is seeking new volunteers this fall for its Discovery Center in Buzzards Bay, according to an announcement shared by the National Marine Life Center. The organization says it is recruiting docents who can help welcome visitors, share behind-the-scenes stories of seal and sea turtle rehabilitation, and support the Discovery Center’s Gift Shop, which NMLC notes helps fund its marine animal care and rescue work.

NMLC emphasized that prior experience is not required, only “a love for marine life and a desire to make a difference.” Volunteers, the center said, play a key role in helping guests connect with the real-world challenges facing local ocean ecosystems, from the threats impacting seals and sea turtles to the broader pressures on marine habitats. By guiding conversations and answering questions, docents can help translate the science and urgency of rehabilitation into something visitors can understand and act on.

Dunkin’ has announced a new, dog-focused twist on National Dog Day celebrations: a one-day “doggie drive-thru” experience in Quincy, Massachusetts, paired with the return of its annual collaboration with BARK and a limited-edition dog toy collection that supports the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation.

The event called “Dunkin’ for Dogs” described as Dunkin’s first-ever official dog drive-thru experience, scheduled for Wednesday, August 26th from 10 AM to 1 PM at 588 Washington Street in Quincy. Dunkin’ says the location will dedicate one drive-thru lane to dogs for the day, offering dog treats, limited-edition BARK x Dunkin’ bandanas, and the chance to receive plush toys from the new collection with a donation to the Joy in Childhood Foundation. The partnership is now in its seventh year and has already raised more than $15 million and sold more than 1 million dog toys benefiting the foundation’s work to bring joy to children facing illness and hunger.

Beyond Quincy, Dunkin’ also says select restaurants across the country will offer the limited-edition bandanas and plush toys on National Dog Day while supplies last, including locations in New York (1703 Third Ave, New York, NY), California (3200 Yorba Linda Blvd, Fullerton, CA), and several sites in Illinois (Naperville, Darien, and Montgomery).

Lucielle, a terrier mix currently being fostered in Rhode Island, is looking for a permanent home through Small Dog Rescue of New England. “Hi! My name is Lucielle! I am a terrier mix who is between 2 and 3 years old and I weigh 28 pounds,” the rescue shared, describing her as “a very very sweet girl” who is ready to meet the person or family that will become her “loving forever home.”

According to the organization, Lucielle’s personality is one of her biggest strengths. “More about me is that I love people…. Big people, small people, old people, young people- just all people really,” the post says, adding that she also enjoys canine company: “I also love dogs. My foster brothers are giant breeds, but I am cool with little dogs and medium ones too.” The rescue noted that a previous foster situation included cats and Lucielle “was ok with” them there, although, “I haven’t been with them since I came north.”

Like many dogs adjusting to a new environment, Lucielle is also learning how to spend time on her own. “When my foster mom is at work I hang out in a crate,” she is described as going “right in with a treat,” though she “sometimes cry for a few minutes… I calm down though and usually sleep.” Midday breaks are a mix of business and fun: “I get let out at lunchtime and sometimes I go potty, but sometimes I just play.”

Playtime, the rescue emphasized, is one of Lucielle’s favorite parts of the day. “Speaking of playing. I love that too! Balls, stuffies, chewy stuff, antlers. A young osprey is recovering after a troubling collision in downtown North Attleboro, an incident that local responders say could have turned far worse without quick human help. The North Attleboro Animal Shelter recently identified the bird as “an Osprey, a large bird of prey that spends the spring and summer seasons in Massachusetts,” noting that the species’ “diet consists mainly of fish” and that they are commonly seen “around all types of bodies of water.”

According to the shelter, the bird’s unexpected appearance in the middle of town was the result of a sudden impact. “This poor bird found itself in downtown North Attleboro after accidentally striking the side of a building,” the announcement said. While window and building strikes are common hazards for birds, especially during active seasons, the shelter emphasized that this situation demanded immediate care beyond what most people might assume from the outside.

Authorities and employees of the building it struck moved fast, and that speed may have made all the difference. The shelter credited “the quick and thoughtful actions of the employees and the NA Police Department” for ensuring the situation stayed calm and controlled, adding that “Animal Control was able to safely capture the bird and transport it to a local wildlife rehabber for observation and treatment.”

The shelter also used the incident to highlight a serious but often invisible danger of bird strikes: injuries that don’t show right away. “It is very important for birds that have suffered a window strike to get to rehabber as soon as possible as they may have internal injuries that cannot be seen,” the organization warned. The message is simple: when a bird hits glass or a building and seems “fine,” it still may be in urgent need of professional wildlife rehabilitation, because what’s happening inside can be far more severe than what’s visible on the surface.

PAWS New England, a 501(c)(3) all-breed dog rescue, says Lucy, a 7-month-old white German Shepherd mix, is now safe in a Southern foster home and ready for adoption in New England after being found as a stray and never reclaimed. In a recent adoption post, PAWS New England described Lucy as a “total package,” reporting that the 30-pound puppy is sweet, unusually calm for a young shepherd-type dog, and has done well with other dogs, cats, and kids.

Two adventurous beagles got an unexpected police escort back to safety after troopers responded to reports of the dogs running loose on a busy highway ramp in Chicopee, according to the Massachusetts State Police.

In an announcement shared by Massachusetts State Police, the agency said the incident happened just after 11:30 AM, when “Troopers from the Springfield Barracks were dispatched to a report of two beagles on the ramp system I-391 South by exit 4A in Chicopee.” The moment quickly turned into a feel-good moment as officers moved from traffic response to animal rescue, capturing the pair and leading them away from danger.

Massachusetts State Police emphasized that the dogs were safely secured and transferred to local authorities, writing, “Both beagles were captured and turned over to Chicopee Animal Control.” While the beagles’ owners were not identified in the statement, the update reassured the public that the animals were no longer at risk on the roadway.

With summer nearing its end, the shelter says Junior Mint “is ready to be home before summer ends,” and they’re hoping the right person or family sees what makes this dog stand out.

According to the shelter, Junior Mint could thrive in more than one kind of household. “He’d be just as happy joining a family as he would being your one-and-only spoiled sidekick,” they shared, an endorsement that suggests flexibility for adopters who want a companion that can blend into a busier home or be the center of attention in a quieter one. Either way, the shelter emphasizes his personality, noting he has “plenty of personality packed into those eight years,” with a mix of independence and playfulness that shows up in his love of games and toys.

A Massachusetts wildlife rescue is urging anglers and shoreline visitors to be more careful with discarded fishing gear after treating a mallard injured by a hook and line entanglement. Newhouse Wildlife Rescue, a nonprofit that helps injured and orphaned wildlife across the state, said incidents like this are far from rare: “It happens more often than you would think… We frequently get calls about birds trapped in fishing line and with hook stuck in them.”

Rescuers said the duck narrowly avoided a more serious outcome because the hook didn’t end up where it could have caused deadly internal damage. “This mallard was very lucky that she didn’t swallow the hook and that is stayed somewhere visible where our team could remove it,” the organization shared. The bird is now receiving care, and the outlook appears positive. “She is being treated for her injuries but seems to be recovering just fine,” they said.

Wildlife rehabilitators note that fishing line can tighten around wings, legs, and necks, cutting off circulation or preventing animals from eating and moving normally. Hooks can puncture tissue, become embedded, and lead to infection—even when they’re eventually removed. Calls about entangled birds, the rescue said, are frequent enough that they see them as a recurring preventable emergency, especially in places where people fish near wetlands, ponds, and shorelines.

Newhouse Wildlife Rescue is asking the public to treat cleanup as part of the sport: pack out all line, bait containers, and tackle, and use designated disposal or recycling bins when available. “It’s a reminder to please be responsible with fishing gear when you use it,” they wrote. “Let’s make sure not to leave anything behind…”

One small piece of forgotten line can become a life-threatening trap, but a few extra seconds of care can keep wildlife safe, and keep more animals from arriving at rehabilitation centers with injuries that never had to happen. Newhouse Wildlife Rescue, a Massachusetts nonprofit that rehabilitates injured and orphaned wildlife, says a raccoon is recovering after becoming trapped in a mouse trap, and the organization is using the incident to urge safer pest-control practices. “I had mixed emotions when I was sent the video of this raccoon caught in a mouse trap…,” the rescue shared, explaining that while the situation was painful, it could have been far worse.

According to Newhouse Wildlife Rescue, one reason they felt relieved was that a trap was used instead of poison. “I was grateful that, whoever set it, chose to use a trap instead of poison,” they said. “If he had gotten into poison, this story would have had a much sadder ending.” The rescue reported that the raccoon was captured and the trap was removed, but not without lasting injury: “He lost two toes due to the ordeal, so he will be with us for a bit so he can heal.”

The rescue stressed that they support the choice of trapping over poisoning, while still warning that traps need to be placed responsibly to prevent harm to unintended animals. “We support the use of traps as opposed to poison - but please don’t just set traps up where any animal can get to them,” Newhouse Wildlife Rescue wrote. They pointed to a practical safety step used by experienced professionals: “Good pest control companies have been setting them up in black boxes so non targeted animals can’t reach them.”

Despite the injury, Newhouse Wildlife Rescue expects the raccoon to make a strong recovery and eventually return to the wild. “Even without two toes, this little guy should be fine and be able to be released,” they said, adding, “Raccoons are very smart.” The rescue also credited the person who alerted them, “his finder, a long-time follower, “ for taking action quickly. “We are so grateful… who made sure he got the help he needed,” Newhouse Wildlife Rescue shared, noting that the raccoon will remain in their care while healing before release.

The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA)-Angell in Boston announced that it will host a “Clear the Shelters” event from August 21st through August 23rd, offering waived adoption fees for all dogs older than one year at all four MSPCA adoption centers. According to MSPCA-Angell, the goal of the multi-day event is to help place adult dogs into homes at a time when shelters are currently full.

MSPCA-Angell said the adoption-fee waiver will also extend to several partner shelters, including Berkshire Humane Society, City of Boston Animal Care and Control, Dakin Humane Society, Lowell Humane Society, Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center, and Worcester Animal Rescue League. The organization encouraged people who have been considering adopting to use the event as an opportunity to meet dogs that may be a good fit for their household and lifestyle.

In its announcement, MSPCA-Angell emphasized that many of the available dogs are ready to “kick off their next chapter” with a family, describing them as potential companions for different activity levels, from “a new hiking buddy” to “a couch potato bestie.” The organization is urging prospective adopters to visit during the August 21st through August 23rd to help reduce crowding in shelters and increase the number of adult dogs finding permanent homes.

Sandy Paws Rescue Inc. has introduced Tabitha, a 3-year-old, 7.8-pound dog now available for adoption in Massachusetts through the organization’s foster-based rescue network. The rescue says Tabitha is “the ultimate petite lap dog” and is “currently in local foster care and ready to go home,” with an adoption application available through the group’s website.

Tabitha recently arrived in care in rough condition. “When she first came into care, she was severely matted and desperately needed a clean slate,” Sandy Paws Rescue Inc. wrote. After grooming, the rescue noted, “After a much-needed haircut, she is feeling SO much better,” adding that they “can’t wait to watch her coat grow back into a gorgeous, fluffy masterpiece as she settles in.”

In describing her temperament, the organization calls Tabitha “sweet, gentle, and deeply affectionate,” and says she is dog friendly. “Yes! Loves having pup pals,” the post states. Despite her recent “fresh buzzcut,” Sandy Paws Rescue Inc. emphasized that her personality is what stands out, writing, “Don’t let her fresh buzzcut fool you—underneath that temporary haircut is a total princess waiting to blossom!”

Now, the rescue says Tabitha is ready for her next step. “Tabitha has survived her fresh start and is officially ready to write her next chapter,” the organization wrote, asking potential adopters, “Will it be with you?”

Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Hudson, Massachusetts, is asking the community to help find an immediate home, whether it's forever or a foster home, for King, a senior dog they say is struggling in the rescue environment. In a recent announcement, the organization described King’s situation as “URGENT,” explaining that “King is having a tough time at the rescue and needs a home,” and asking supporters to share his story so the right person can find him.

According to Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue, King experiences “separation stress when he is without humans,” which makes day-to-day life in a busy rescue setting especially difficult. The group emphasized that King isn’t looking for perfection, he’s looking for presence. “More than anything, King is looking for his person—someone who can be with him most of the day,” they wrote, noting that an ideal adopter might be someone who is retired, works from home, or has a dog-friendly workplace.

The rescue says King would do best in a calm, quiet home with someone who is around most of the time, or who can include him in daily routines outside the house. They also shared that King “loves the car,” suggesting that errands and rides could actually be a comfort for him rather than a challenge. As for the home environment, the organization indicated that “a mellow dog companion is welcome,” and that “older dog-savvy teens are okay,” as long as the household fits King’s need for stability and consistent companionship.

In their post, Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue painted a picture of a dog who finds happiness in simple closeness: “He’s happiest simply being by your side. Following you from room to room. Meet Scooby, the joyful young pup in search of a loving family to call his own. Great Dog Rescue New England (GDRNE), a dedicated foster-based dog rescue in Massachusetts, recently introduced Scooby after he came into their care. According to the rescue, “Scooby came all the way from Mississippi to find his mystery-solving gang. Zoinks!” He is now living safe and sound with a loving foster family while he waits for the next chapter of his life to begin.

Scooby is a 2-year-old pup who is thought to be a Feist mix. He is a medium-sized boy who currently weighs approximately 30 to 35 pounds. His foster says, “Happy, loving, and playful, Scooby’s got a heart that’s just as big as his personality (and his stomach!) He’s the kind of dog who makes every house feel like a home, mainly because he’s always on the lookout for ghosts!” Scooby’s foster goes on to enthuse, “He’s incredibly loving, loyal, and naturally protective of the people he loves.”

This loving and sociable boy gets along well with other pups and children, but hasn’t yet met any cats. He is a smart boy who has already mastered potty training as well as walking on leashes. His future family will still need to give him some pointers on crates and basic commands, however. Potential adopters should be pleased to know that he is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations. Scooby’s profile ends, “Don’t solve your next mystery without him! Scooby is waiting to meet you!”

They consist of volunteers throughout New England who love dogs and want to help them escape homelessness.
