An emotion can be surprisingly fleeting. It rises, moves through the body, and begins to settle. But sometimes, we don’t allow it to leave. We return to the moment that caused it, replay the words, revisit the hurt, imagine different endings. Our thoughts give the feeling somewhere to live, and something that might have passed becomes something we carry.

Perhaps this is why our inner dialogue matters so much.

We might realise that beneath our anger there is actually fear. We may notice that an old wound has been touched, or that exhaustion has made us more sensitive than usual. Sometimes, we even recognise that what we’re feeling belongs partly to the present and partly to something that happened long ago.

Think of someone who grew up feeling that expressing an opinion would often be met with criticism. Perhaps whenever she became excited about an idea, someone dismissed it or made her feel foolish for saying it.

Eventually, she may learn to keep her thoughts to herself.

Years later, she might find herself in a room full of people who genuinely want to hear what she thinks, yet still feel that familiar hesitation before speaking.

Nobody has rejected her. Nothing dangerous is happening.

And yet, something inside her remembers.

“Perhaps I shouldn’t say this.”

This is how old emotional patterns can stay with us. The present may be completely different, but the body and mind can still respond as though the past is happening again.

There is, however, a small moment between what we feel and what we do with it.

Someone says something that hurts us. We feel the anger rising. Our body becomes tense. Our mind immediately begins preparing a response.

And then we pause.

Not because our feelings aren’t valid, and not because we have to suppress them, but because feeling something doesn’t mean we have to act on it.

We can listen to what our emotions are telling us without allowing them to decide what we do next.

That little moment of awareness can change everything.

We can observe a thought without immediately believing it. We can experience anger without becoming anger. We can feel fear without allowing fear to make every decision for us.

This, to me, is one of the most important things mindfulness can teach us: staying present with what we feel without becoming completely consumed by it.

We don’t need to become people who never feel pain, nor do we need to eliminate every difficult thought or remain calm at all times. We are human, and difficult emotions are part of being human. What matters is learning to meet them with awareness rather than allowing them to take over our choices.

We won’t always get it right. Sometimes our old patterns will move faster than our awareness. Sometimes we will react and only understand ourselves afterwards.

But every time we manage to pause, to notice what is happening inside us, and to choose a different response, we create the possibility of something new.

Perhaps healing is partly this: learning to recognise the wounds we carry without allowing them to govern the present.

But with awareness, we can become more conscious of what we do with those feelings.

Somewhere between the feeling and the reaction, there is a small space. It may last only a moment, but within that moment, there is awareness, and within awareness, the freedom to pause, breathe, reflect, and choose how we want to respond.

This small action of pausing helps us stay more in control of our emotions, and a little less vulnerable to what others say or do.

Every photograph holds a story, but this one has more than a story to tell. It takes me back to a chapter of my life spent serving as a missionary with the Franciscans and carries a little piece of my heart.

I was 16 years old when I joined them. I had no career, no plans—I was just a teenager. The team adopted me and taught me more than the Bible. They taught me how to be human. A concept that was completely unknown to me at that point in my life.

I grew up surrounded by love, but also by people’s expectations. No one had really told me that I was a human being, with my own needs, feelings, and limitations. Realising that was strangely reassuring.

Learning about it began a journey of discovering myself and others—a tough journey.

We volunteered locally with different charities and organisations that kindly joined forces so that we could reach as many people in need as possible. We celebrated children’s birthdays in hospitals, orphanages, and neighbourhoods where, sometimes, the world seemed to forget to look.

Children love people who make them feel loved and make them laugh, so we wore red clown noses and played with them. We shared food and sang “Happy Birthday” together. Often, I’d shed a few tears. I’m shedding a few tears now just remembering their happy faces.

I always thought, I wish I could do more.

We also celebrated Christmas with people experiencing homelessness, giving them the chance to sit at a long table surrounded by other human beings who deserved a warm meal and a warm moment together.

We sat together and celebrated Christmas.

Then we travelled around the country, visiting places where even the rain seemed to have forgotten to show up. One of those places was where this picture was taken: Miraflores, a small town in the province of Chaco, Argentina.

In these towns, we were given a school building to use as our home during our stay. Our mission would last three weeks.

We walked in pairs from house to house, looking for people who needed our help. I forgot to mention that our group included doctors, nurses, psychologists, monks, and a few little humans simply willing to help.

So we weren’t just looking for people who needed food. We were also looking for those who needed healthcare, those who needed a simple hug and, of course, children who were desperate to play.

After spending the whole morning talking to our lovely neighbours, we gathered to pray and have lunch together with some of them.

After lunch, we’d organise ourselves to wash the dishes and take a little break. Then we’d put together a list of the products and services that were needed. We’d divide into groups and head out again, ready to provide whatever help was needed.

On Saturdays and Sundays, after Mass, we’d have a children’s festival. We’d play, dance, and sing together. There was so much laughter and so much fun.

The picture I chose to share with all of you was taken in a community that left a lasting impression on me.

The community was a little way outside the town, and they spoke only their native language, Guaraní. Yet they welcomed us with beautiful smiles and huge hugs.

Oh my, I’m in tears again just thinking about it.

They had no television, cable, or internet. They had their land and, most importantly, each other.

They wouldn’t accept the food we had brought. Instead, they cooked for us and asked us to sit down.

I felt so uncomfortable. I had come there to help, and now they were helping us. But the priest said something to me that I have never forgotten:

“Sometimes you help by allowing others to help you.”

So I listened. Well… sort of.

I didn’t sit down. I went to the field and played football with the kids instead.

When the food was ready, we all sat together and enjoyed the delicious meal they had so generously prepared for us.

Afterwards, we returned their kindness in whatever ways we could. We washed the dishes, helped around the house, checked for illnesses, and left our donations with them.

And when everything was done, we stayed together, laughing and sharing stories. We had such a wonderful time that we didn’t want to leave.

They may not have had much in terms of material possessions, but they had an abundance of something far more valuable: generosity, warmth, and love.

May God bless them.

These experiences, and so many others, are what made my heart feel full.

I learned that, beneath everything else, I am human.

And even though I was going through difficult times myself, these experiences made me feel alive. Whenever my heart falters, I remember the group, my friends, the communities, their smiles, their hugs and their love. I remember that I am human.

They gave me more than I could ever have given them.

They showed me kindness in human form.

And that is something I will never forget.

I wish I could do more.

Steve was a man who believed that everything around him should exist in perfect balance.

His clothes had to be immaculate—neatly pressed, carefully arranged, and carrying a subtle, inviting fragrance. His home had to shine like a diamond, every object precisely where it belonged. Even his work had to be flawless.

Steve liked order.

He liked things organised, predictable and under control.

Every week, he would visit his mother, Maya, for lunch.

Maya was a nutritional therapist, well known among her friends for her understanding of nutrition and its intricate relationship with the body and mind.

She knew her son well. She noticed what he tended to overlook.

One Sunday, as they sat at the table, Maya watched Steve finish his lunch in his usual hurried way, barely pausing between bites.

“Tell me, Steve… what are your eating habits like these days?”

Steve looked up.

“My eating habits?”

“Yes. Do you ever actually think about what you eat?”

Steve smiled.

“Well, Mum, I don’t really have time to think about food. My job demands most of my attention. I just grab something whenever I can.”

Maya smiled.

“I suppose a man who takes such great care to keep everything around him in balance should also make room for the balance within himself.”

Steve sighed.

“I know, Mum. Life is demanding.”

Maya gave him a tender look.

“You could be a little kinder to yourself, my darling.”

Steve sat a little straighter.

“Oh, I’m kind to myself, Mum. I’m disciplined. I set goals, I achieve them, I’m successful—and I do everything I can to keep it that way.”

Maya smiled.

“I know you are, my dear. And I’m proud of you. You work hard, and you always give your best.”

She paused.

“But tell me… when was the last time you walked barefoot on the grass?”

Steve blinked.

“What?”

Maya laughed softly.

“When was the last time you went for a walk in nature simply because you wanted to? When was the last time you sat down and actually enjoyed a meal? A beautiful, colourful salad, perhaps, filled with nourishing ingredients?”

Steve shook his head.

“Oh, please, Mum. Paula, my coworker, says exactly the same nonsense you do.”

Maya raised an eyebrow.

“Oh, well. Then perhaps you have everything figured out, my darling.”

She gave him a little smile.

“I just hope your body can keep up with you.”

Steve fell silent.

He looked down at his plate.

“I’m sorry, Mum.”

His voice softened.

“I’ve been stressed lately. You’re right. I probably do need a break.”

He hesitated.

“But I don’t have time.”

Then he looked at her.

“So… what do you suggest?”

Maya reached across the table and took his hand.

“I know, my dear. You’re working hard. You’re trying your best. And I’m proud of you.”

She gently squeezed his hand.

“I just want you to remember the person underneath all that stress. The person who needs looking after, too.”

She smiled.

“At least let me tell you a little about antioxidants and oxidative stress.”

Steve leaned back, curious.

“Sure, Mum. I’d love to know about it.”

Maya took a sip of her tea.

“Well, let’s start with something you already understand very well.”

Steve waited.

“Balance.”

She smiled.

“Your body isn’t simply a machine that performs tasks. It’s a living, constantly changing ecosystem. Every second, an extraordinary number of processes are taking place inside you. Your cells are producing energy, your immune system is working, your brain is communicating, and your tissues are repairing and adapting.”

Steve listened.

“And as part of all this activity, your body naturally produces reactive molecules, including free radicals.”

Steve frowned.

“Why oxidative stress, Mum? Why would my body produce something that can damage it?”

Maya smiled.

“Because, like almost everything in biology, it’s not simply a matter of good versus bad.”

She continued.

“These reactive molecules have important roles. They’re involved in normal cellular signalling and immune defence. Your body needs them. The problem can arise when the production of reactive molecules exceeds the body’s ability to regulate them and maintain oxidative balance.”

Steve nodded.

“And that’s oxidative stress?”

“Exactly.”

Maya continued.

“When reactive molecules become excessive relative to the body’s antioxidant defences, oxidative stress can occur. If that imbalance becomes excessive or prolonged, it can contribute to damage to cells and their components.”

Steve thought about it.

“So antioxidants help keep things balanced?”

“They’re an important part of the body’s defence system, yes.”

Maya smiled.

“Your body has its own antioxidant defence systems, and the foods you eat provide a wide variety of compounds that can support those defences and contribute to your overall health. Colourful fruits and vegetables, berries, nuts, seeds, legumes, herbs, tea and many other plant foods contain a variety of these compounds.”

Steve looked down at his plate.

For the first time, he seemed to notice the colours in his salad.

“So there’s more going on in there than I realised.”

Maya laughed softly.

“There is always more going on inside you than you realise.”

Then she added:

“And there’s something else I want you to understand, Steve.”

He looked up.

“Your mind and your body aren’t separate worlds.”

Steve listened.

“When stress becomes chronic, it doesn’t remain only in your thoughts. Your body responds to it. Stress-related changes in hormones, immune function and metabolism can influence inflammation and oxidative balance.”

She paused.

“But it’s never just one thing. Sleep, nutrition, physical activity, illness, smoking, alcohol and many other factors can also influence oxidative stress and your overall health.”

Steve nodded slowly.

“So it’s all connected.”

“Exactly.”

Maya smiled.

“That’s why caring for yourself isn’t about finding one magical food or taking one magical supplement. It’s about looking at the whole picture.”

Steve fell quiet.

The words stayed with him.

The whole picture.

For years, he had devoted himself to keeping his external world in order.

His clothes, his home, his career, his schedule, his goals.

Everything except the world he carried within him.

“So I’ve been spending all my energy keeping everything around me balanced…”

He looked at Maya.

“…while barely paying attention to the ecosystem inside me.”

Maya smiled.

“Perhaps it’s time you gave that world some attention, too.”

Steve looked at his mother.

Something softened in his expression.

He picked up his fork. But this time, he didn’t rush. He looked at his food and tasted it. And for a moment, he sat there. Present.

“Tell me more, Mum.”

Maya smiled.

“I will.”

And perhaps Steve’s journey towards balance had finally begun—not by bringing more order to the world around him, but by learning to listen to the world within him.

Because beneath our thoughts, our emotions, our routines and our busy lives, there is an extraordinary inner ecosystem—living, communicating, adapting and constantly seeking balance.

And like every living ecosystem, it deserves our care, our attention, our nourishment and, perhaps most importantly, our kindness.

Our inner world is not separate from the life we live around us. It is part of it.

Perhaps true balance begins when we stop caring only for the world we can see and begin caring for the remarkable world we carry within us.

Because sometimes, taking care of ourselves isn’t about demanding more from the body.

It’s about learning to listen to it.

I’m not here to make you feel seen.

I see you.

I see you.

Oppression depends on a relationship of power between those who hold power and those who are subjected to it. Power does not always need to announce itself. It can be built into the rules we follow, the norms we grow up with, and the expectations we are taught to meet. When these become part of everyday life, we can begin to internalise them, accepting them not because we freely chose them, but because they have become familiar.

When we constantly feel pressured to meet these rules and expectations, we can become angry, stressed, and exhausted. We can become more reactive and have less mental space to pause, question, recognise patterns, and choose how to respond.

A calm mind can see more clearly.

It can question, recognise patterns, and choose how to respond.

Think about a toxic workplace, where constant pressure and fear of losing your job can leave you too exhausted to question unfair treatment, or to recognise when “responsibility” is being used to disguise oppression, injustice, and inequality.

Or an abusive relationship, where keeping someone anxious and emotionally drained can make it harder to recognise patterns, think clearly, or assert boundaries.

The power over you is greatest when you lose the space to think, choose, and respond freely.

Yes, I know the bills have to be paid. I know the world needs a functioning economy. I know we all have responsibilities.

But what if we could still work, still pay our bills, and still question the idea that exhaustion is simply the price of being responsible?

I’m not saying we shouldn’t work. I’m saying that work should be fair. That equal work should mean fair remuneration. That having time for your family and the ability to afford a home shouldn’t be a luxury. That education, healthcare, and basic security shouldn’t feel out of reach.

Choosing love shouldn’t be a luxury.

Choosing your dreams shouldn’t be a luxury.

Having time to actually live shouldn’t be a luxury.

Perhaps the problem is that we have become so accustomed to certain forms of inequality that we have started calling them reality.

I’m not telling you to stop doing what you’re doing. I’m asking you to become aware of what is fair and what isn’t.

You deserve a human life.

Not a machine life.

You deserve a life.

And perhaps the first step towards reclaiming your life is reclaiming your mind.

Pause…

Breathe…

Think.

Is this the life I want?

What can I change?

What can I do to regain some control over my own life?

It may sound impossible. I know.

But if something in your heart tells you that another way of living is possible, perhaps it is worth taking one small step towards it.

When the Moon asked the Sun why he shone, a little star interrupted her before he could answer. By the time the star had finished speaking, the Sun had forgotten the question.

So the Moon politely repeated herself.

“Why do you shine?”

The Sun smiled.

“I don’t know. I suppose I’ve never thought of shining as something I needed to explain.”

The little star, ashamed of herself, lowered her light.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I didn’t mean to interrupt. I simply have so many things to say that sometimes I forget to leave room for someone else to speak.”

The Sun looked at the little star and smiled.

“Perhaps that’s why I shine,” he said. “I listen to all the beings who need my warmth and light.”

“So do I,” said the Moon. “Thank you, my dear Sun, for your warm and beautiful light.”

The little star grew quiet.

And for the first time, she understood that perhaps the brightest thing in the sky was not the one who spoke the most, but the one who knew how to listen with their heart.

I find it almost cruel to ask a person who grew up deprived of nourishment to simply “behave like an adult.”

What do we imagine adulthood is built on? A child cannot learn what was never given to them. If love, safety, tenderness, guidance, and emotional nourishment were missing from their upbringing, how were they supposed to develop the inner tools we later demand of them?

We ask them to regulate what was never soothed, to understand what was never explained, and to give what they were never taught to receive.

The solution is simple, though it may sound almost impossible:

Don’t starve children. 💙

Not of food.

Not of love.

Not of affection.

Not of safety.

Because we cannot expect adults to magically know how to give what they were never given.

We measure love as if it were measurable.

As if it could be counted in hours, messages, sacrifices, or the number of times someone stayed.

But love has never been very good at mathematics.

Sometimes it lives in the smallest gestures:

a hand held without being asked,

a cup of tea left beside you,

someone remembering how you take your coffee,

a message that arrives just when you need it,

someone sending you a song because it reminded them of you,

checking in without needing anything in return,

remembering something you once said months ago,

saving a story to tell you later,

or simply being there when there are no words left.

Sometimes it is in the quietest things:

It is someone thinking of you while making dinner,
smiling at something because they know you would have loved it,
remembering an important day,
or carrying a little piece of you quietly in their heart.

We look for grand declarations,

while love is often whispering in ordinary moments.

Perhaps love is not measured by how much we give or receive, but by how gently we make room for one another to exist.

Edgar was a man with big dreams and a creative mind. He believed that his heart needed more than reality could ever offer.

So he used his emotions as ink and brushstrokes. He painted tears as rain, wrote love as prose, painted death as a sunset, and grief as an empty house waiting to be filled by those whose absence wasn’t due to death, but to pride. His art wasn’t a collection of masterpieces to be admired without care; his soul was woven into every one of them.

Maria, his sister, visited him every Friday at his house, far from the world’s noise. He lived where the trees spoke in silence, and the wind whispered life’s secrets.

Maria felt compelled to visit him because she believed her brother was lonely. Yet every time she came, she criticised his life as being too simple. She told him he needed to leave that place and live a real life, get married, have children, and be normal—like everyone else.

Edgar never contradicted her, even though he knew how wrong she was. She was the only member of his family who still remembered him. He had a large family in the city, yet none of them agreed with him or visited him in his little artistic world.

He didn’t feel lonely. He was content with his life as an artist, where judgement took the shape of a stern judge on a canvas or became the next line in one of his poems about the world’s noise. What he felt instead was the quiet emptiness of being misunderstood by the very people who swore to love him.

Every time she left the house, he felt that bittersweet flavour of relief and sorrow. He loved her, but he couldn’t tolerate her disrespect. He reflected on how love makes us walk the path of sorrow just to share one more second with those we love.

Is this love? he thought.

Then he let go of the question and painted himself embracing his sister tightly in his garden. He added his tears as rain falling upon them while flowers blossomed all around.

That night, Edgar went to bed. He watched the sun set on the horizon, and as the moon rose into the sky, his heart filled with its quiet beauty, he drifted off to sleep.

Without knowing it would be his last sunset, his last moonlit sky, his last painting, before he would join the stars in his new sky.

At his funeral, hundreds of people gathered. Everyone mourned his passing with a grief they didn’t know how to express—not the way Edgar would have.

They remembered him as a great artist: humble, smiling, and full of dreams. His kindness was on everyone’s lips—words he would have loved to hear. A hundred people he would have loved to see. But he didn’t.

His art was donated to a museum in his village, making the town a destination for tourists who came to admire the work of an artist the world had recognised only after his death.

His sister, Maria, kept his last painting and all his writings. She wished she had been gentler with her words the last time she saw him. What she never knew were the emotions that had moved him to create such precious art.

Edgar didn’t become a star.

He had always been one.

Now his soul travels through night and day as a light that has no end. He is art, and the very art that kept him alive now holds him in eternal grace.

I love observing my surroundings while out on a stroll. I feel the summer breeze, admire the green trees, and smile back at the flowers that seem to be smiling at me.

I notice the kindness of people who are probably in a rush, yet still stop to let others cross the street.

A helping hand offered to an elderly gentleman who can’t tie his shoelaces.

Cars arrive at the petrol station and leave with more than just petrol. Somehow, people rarely leave with only what they came for.

The sky is clear. The salty scent of the ocean drifts through the air. The tide is low, and people are swimming. The waves come and go, as if leaving endless kisses upon the shore.

And there I am, barefoot on the cool sand, letting the waves brush against my feet as I breathe deeply and soak it all in.

The crime happened on a quiet morning in the town of Beland, a place where assumptions passed for evidence and certainty mattered more than truth.

By the time Detective Evelyn Hale arrived, the streets had already become a courtroom. Every witness had a theory. Every theory sounded like a fact.

The investigation had barely begun.

As Detective Hale questioned the growing crowd, a man in his forties happened to walk past the crime scene. His head was down, his pace was steady, and he seemed eager to get somewhere.

He was only on his way to catch the bus.

Someone pointed.

“That one.”

Detective Hale turned.

The man’s appearance alone was enough to raise suspicion. His clothes were worn, his posture was tense, and he avoided eye contact. In Beland, people often mistook discomfort for guilt.

There were no fingerprints. No motive. No witnesses. Only assumptions.

When a psychiatric evaluation described Tony’s behaviour as “abnormal,” the case took a darker turn. Rather than being released, he was declared dangerous and mentally unstable. By order of the Court of Assumptions, he was sentenced to indefinite solitary confinement in a secure psychiatric institution.

His cell was designed to erase time.

The walls swallowed every sound. Darkness filled every corner. A faint thread of light slipped through the keyhole in the heavy metal door. High above him was a tiny window, covered with blackened glass and far beyond his reach.

The only possession he was allowed to keep was a single white ping-pong ball.

So every day, he threw it into the air and caught it.

Up.

Down.

Again.

It became the rhythm of his existence.

He had no visitors. No conversations. No books. Only silent guards who occasionally looked through the door to make sure he was still there—as though there were anywhere he could possibly go.

One day, while playing, Tony tossed the ping-pong ball into the darkness.

He waited.

Silence.

The ball never came back down.

A wave of terror swept through him.

If the ball hadn’t fallen, then someone—or something—must have caught it.

His breathing became frantic. He searched every inch of the tiny cell, stumbling blindly through the darkness, his hands scraping against the cold walls. He screamed for the guards, insisting someone else was inside.

The guards exchanged glances.

“The patient’s condition is deteriorating,” one of them said.

No one searched the room. No one looked for the ball. Everyone assumed.

Then, years later, investigators recovered forgotten CCTV footage from a nearby building. The recording revealed the real killer.

Tony had never committed the crime.

He was innocent.

The charges were dropped, and the institution had no choice but to release him.

But freedom had arrived too late.

Years of isolation, fear, and unanswered questions had broken something inside him.

He no longer cared about the trial.

The only question that haunted him was the one no one had ever answered.

Who took the ping-pong ball?

Unable to escape that single thought, Tony remained in psychiatric care—not because he had entered the institution insane, but because years of isolation and assumptions had finally driven him there.

Months after Tony left, the institution began renovating the abandoned cell.

As a construction worker removed part of the old ceiling, something small rolled onto the floor.

It had become wedged in a crack in the damaged ceiling the day it disappeared.

The only thing that had trapped Tony all those years was an assumption.

He shrugged and walked away.

"Have you found anything yet?" I asked.

He smiled shyly.

"No."

So we stood there together, looking at the sky.

After a while, he asked, "Do you think that when we die, we go up there?"

"I believe so," I said.

If even those accused of terrible crimes are given the chance to be heard before judgment is passed, why are we so quick to judge one another after seeing only a single moment?

We never know what grief someone is carrying.

We never know what battle they're fighting in silence.

I may never receive anything in return.

But every time I see a wounded soul smile again, I feel as though I've gained the sky.

Every evening, a lovely woman in her sixties sat on the front step of her house.

One evening, I asked her how she was doing.

"Not too bad," she said.

I sat down beside her.

"Thank you," she whispered.

"For what?" I asked with a smile.

"For keeping me company while I wait."

"Wait for what?"

"My death," she replied. "It won't be long now."

I didn't say a word.

For the next thirty years, I often stopped by to sit with her and keep her company.

Then, one day, after all that time, I asked her again,

"So... how's it going?"

She looked at me, and we both laughed.

That was the last time I saw her.

I often think of relationships as books.

We wait for them with excitement. We count the days until they're in our hands. We carry them everywhere, unable to put them down. We underline the lines that move us, return to our favorite passages, and tell everyone how much we love them.

Then, little by little, they find a place on the shelf.
