Everyone should be free to experience this, using computers or portable phones. Try using the camera option and wiggling a lot.

Widthipedia

Get a different Wikipedia page for every width × height browser size combo.

From Matt: I noticed you can access Wikipedia articles by ID, so then it was easy to delta-encode every ID & keep it small enough to simply load client-side.

Provenance

Guess which country artifacts were stolen from. Share the results with your friends.

From Avi: I discovered that interpol kept a database of stolen artifacts that have been reported to Interpol for decades. So i made a daily game where you guess where the art was stolen from, to highlight what art theft looks like. Can you figure it out? Each incorrect guess gives you slightly more detail.

Bests & Worsts Reviews from Amazon

I love Amazon reviews, obviously

From Greg: My sociology 2 cent theory (I have not been to sociology school...) is that Amazon reviews may be - for some - one of the rare outlets where they can speak freely about their experience and the tension they lived (or were relieved of) by consuming a specific product to fill some specific need/solve some specific problem. I bought THIS liquid for MY fruit flies but it DIDN'T work, let me tell you how why when etc. I found that some cool academics had scraped like half of amazon, and built this thing on top of that. It's fun! Bye!

Costco Gas Prices

Tracking gas prices from every Costco, globally

From Jack: Last year I was being a broke college kid and lived between two Costcos which would sometimes have cheaper gas than the other one (by like 10-15 cents!!) so naturally I went digging through their code to figure it out. This ended up with me mapping out every Costco gas station in the US, and then shortly after the Strait of Hormuz crisis happened so I got to watch how their prices changed with it. A fun fact about the project is I actually also scraped all 7/11s, Marathons, Shells, etc. - basically every major gas station in the US and was tracking that for some time. Unfortunately, many anti-bot systems started to work against me, Costco’s was the only one that didn’t so I just made it fully Costco based and called it a day.

The Curve

RateMyProfessor but as a ranked ELO board

From Jack: I played a lot of competitive video games growing up so I’m no stranger to ELO/ranked systems. With school starting back up around the country, I was wondering where my professors stacked up not only across my university, but across the world as well. I realized that RateMyProfessor left introspection on their GraphQL API, so I decided to scrape all 1.7 million professors and their rating scores! I then generated a simulation so that each professor would go “head to head” with their ratings and see which professor students would likely take again based on their ratings / difficulty. After a few hundred passes, the ELO ladder was created!

Can I condition my brain to stop doomscrolling?

Attempted psychological training using an custom-built system

From Aidan: Last year, I attempted to train myself into not cursing by shocking myself everytime I cursed. It did not work. This time, I created a system that shocks me if I use my phone for over three minutes every hour (which I eventually shrunk to 15 seconds) & rewards me with a little treat if I used social media on my computer for less than 3 minutes every hour. The system worked shockingly well, and even though I’m a real Gen Z doomscroller, I did not hardly touch my phone at all once the barrier of “slight pain” was placed between me and Instagram. I didn’t even miss it at all! While I don’t think I did much to permanently train myself, the system opened my - and hopefully the viewer’s - eyes as to some interesting psychological aspects of regular phone usage.

Projects for July 2026

Every IKEA object's build time, a Pokemon or women naming test, a super detailed cathedral capture, and more

Justin Guo

IKEA Complexity Index

how long does anything take???

From Greg: don't you hate not having your own index? ok, "big mac index", that's cool, the economist, I guess!! yes, you've caught on by now - I created an index of 20 ish thousand ish ikea products and how long they should take to build. No account required. Words can go in any direction and snake around.

From Luke: This was a really quick project compared to some of my other ideas - completed in just about two weeks! It borrows a lot of tech decisions from monkeys.zip, which drastically sped up development. So far I’ve been very pleased with the reception - collectively some 1000+ players have now found over 300,000 words!

The basic tech outline is that I store words in Firestore (so you can easily get realtime updates) - but rather than document-per-word (which would get very expensive) each document stores ~2000 words based on chunks. As you navigate the world, we subscribe and unsubscribe from chunks within the view, caching them locally. For rendering this data I have a sloppily vibecoded tilemap renderer, where tiles are rendered in a Web Worker and stored into memory. I probably should’ve just used a library for this, but it’s performant enough for now.

One thing that is new for me is having a Discord for the game - thanks to Neal for encouraging this approach - I’ve been liking it a lot! Not a ton of people in there, but more than I expected. It’s both practical and motivating to be able to chat with people who like it, and get some instant feedback - plus for my next launch I now have a small group of fans that can help with that initial push for virality.

QUOTEOFF

Popularity contest for out of context quotes I overheard in 2025.

From Alex: A decent amount of my humor is just repeating back things that I hear other people say. I’ve always loved absurd, out of context quotes and for 2025, I just actually wrote them down!

Then, after a quick back and forth with Google Gemini, I had a basic website that I styled and connected to Google Firebase.

At quoteoff.com, you’re presented with two random quotes and just have to pick your favorite of the two. Behind the scenes, it’s using ELO ranking to adjust point values for each quote. Then, on the leaderboard you can see the current top 10!

Voting has been open for about a month now… and the rankings have changed drastically. Not sure ELO is the best for this situation but… it’s definitely been interesting!

Had a great time seeing people explore the year’s quotes, and I already have a good start on the 2026 quotes 🌞

Call a Stranger

Two old timey phones in Brooklyn that connect random people.

From Laurence: This was a project made in the summer, my first time learning to code! I had this idea of having two phones that can call each other from either side of a park and spark random connection between two strangers. I designed the enclosures to fit a Raspberry Pi, battery bank, hang/pick up mechanism, and a big button to call. I shared the project online nearly two weeks ago and people loved it, it was so amazing to see people interact with the phones irl, so I'm gonna continue putting the phones up and possibly do one across states or even the world. I built a site to show where the phones are and have been: callastranger.site

in progress works

A lightweight accountability community for your side projects
From Connie: inprogress.works is a weekly lightweight accountability community for your side projects. It’s still in the early stages but the core mechanic is you cannot see anyone else’s post until you post yourself and to post once a week. I wanted to discourage one-way social feeds that are optimized towards appealing towards the algorithm, but rather allow people to relate to each other through a shared joy of making. Creating and making things is important because I believe it’s the surest path to self actualization and engaging with the world.

PoQR Cards

PoQR Cards is a full deck with a scannable QR code on each card linking to art, cultural artifacts, obscure knowledge, and more.

From Justin and Brian: Have you ever played cards and thought “I wish I could scan these with my phone somehow”? It’s variable, too (you just have to move the breadboard further away from the power coil 😏)

Can a shock collar train me to stop cursing?

A short and half-scientific experiment in how shock aversion therapy affected me in an attempt to see if it would change my behavior.

From Aiden: This is just a silly video that I made more for entertainment than actual science, but I always like the concept of people learning a bit or just generally coming away with something from my videos. If you watch, you may make the observation that shock aversion therapy is not good. And this is the kind of groundbreaking discovery that I pride myself on.

VTV

MTV but for weird / bad novelty songs, complete with animated idents

From Matt: I trawled YouTube for hundreds of novelty songs to make my own twisted version of MTV, and commissioned HappyToast to make animated idents. The result has been described as “horrific but compelling”.

Big Ass Head

A Chrome Extension that adds a big ass head from a collection of big anonymous backs of heads when you watch a live performance on YouTube.

From Tina: Hackathons are about making the internet a better place. Some people make <s>apps</s> GPT wrappers to stop climate change, to cure loneliness, and to disrupt entire industries.

Performative

Labubus kept selling out, so we made an app with a picture of one that bounces around, and hangs on your belt

From Los and Marc: Los and Marc are a part of Danger Testing, a group dropping a new app every week.

Panama Playlists

Scraping Spotify data to reveal the hidden music tastes of celebrities, politicians, and journalists. We created a handheld device that turns everything you say sarcastic. /s

From Josh and Tres: Fave part – finishing it. Worst part – would never work when we tried to show it to people! Most difficult – the team making it more difficult than it needed to be (went from voice modulation, ChatGPT with a voice changer, and then finally just sitting down for an hour and recording ourselves reading the Shark Tale transcript sarcastically). Inspiration – the “Sar-chasm” (if you’re a Disney person, you’ll know).

Gathering Dust

A Chrome Extension that gradually adds dust to open tabs. Blow into your microphone to clear. Or, you know. Close your damn tabs.

From Justin: I used to be a 50+ open tab guy before recently realizing that this is probably terrible for the long term health of my computer, so my solution was to make this Chrome Extension. I originally wanted to do something based on the imagery of a “tab graveyard”, but I didn’t really know what that meant.

Projects for July 2025

JD Vance on your boarding pass, calculated urinal usage, drinking every documented cocktail, and more

Justin Guo

Welcome to Newsletter Goes Here - a once-a-month roundup of projects that our friends made.

Turn your boring boarding pass into a big, beautiful bald JD Vance for airport checkin

From James: Turn your boring boarding pass into a big, beautiful bald JD Vance for airport check-in. The most surreal part was being contacted by Mads Mikkelsen, the guy who was deported and hearing his side of the story. He in turn said it was surreal to see a day of his life become one of those memes about current events he usually consumes.

The Fed says this is a cube of $1M. They're off by half a million.

From Calvin: My trip to the Fed’s Money Museum went sideways when I discovered their $1 million cube doesn’t add up.

Primesweeper

From Matt: Minesweeper… but with prime numbers!. Every now and then it’s fun to drop what I should be doing and turn around a little game in a day.

I Made The Most Anxious Elmo Ever

From Avi: So glad I got back to making YouTube videos, and honestly that was the difficult part in that case. But the actual making of the Elmo was crazy too - at one point I had to desolder a bunch because of how the SFX board worked and it wasn’t letting me put new files on it.

Interestingly, people kept asking how I generated the voice, which was my friend just voice acting. AI is changing too much

CaptchaStash

From Guy: When the machines rise, we'll need the ultimate digital security to protect our physical goods. I used an ESP-32-powered touchscreen and an electrically actuated lock to create a safe that only opens after it verifies that its operator is indeed human… using reCAPTCHAs, of course!

Internet Flowers

From Mika: Leaked and sold my data in a very very cute way (◕‿◕✿).

I spent a lot of time thinking about piss

From Chianli: You do not know the mathematically best place to take a piss. But if you go to threeurinaldilemma.com you may just find enlightenment. I got a lot of weird looks interviewing people about their urination preferences which might make you think I’m weird, but in fact I am very normal and well adjusted. This is also why I strapped an internal combustion engine onto a skateboard which you should be seeing soon.

Cowstars

From Morry: I tried to dunk on Laura Giplin’s poem “The Two-Headed Calf” and ended up accidentally making something very beautiful. Oops. Click the button for more stars .✦ ˚ . ✦

Please fix this site

From Avi: We were inspired by XKCD 3113 for this one and we wanted to make a nightmarish site. A very funny problem was that cursor really didn’t want to make this website so broken since I was actively breaking design guidelines. This was also a Humidity Studios project.

We’re So Over, We’re So Back

From Mac:

IG: @transistor_resistor
Bluesky: macp.bsky.social

I’m a Chicago based “artist” that makes “artworks.”

It’s DOOM but you can Cut, Copy and Paste

From Greg: My friend's software had a wacky implementation of Copy/Paste which made me think that it would be funny to have that very "normie" functionality in a game, one of the last places where copy/paste is typically (completely?) absent. I vibe-made this with AI - I'm also still unsure of what it truly means to copy in doom. My most secret wish is that you could copy/paste walls. Maybe v2! xx

Heavyweight

From Morry: Not legal advice, but you can look like you have a lawyer if you afford it. The scariness of legal letters is 90% document formatting and then 10%, you know, the power of the law. Input your complaint, play around with the sliders, and send your obstinate landlord or customer service desk a letter from people that look extremely serious. Did we mention this isn’t legal advice?

I drank every cocktail

From Adam: I drank all 102 cocktails on the IBA official cocktail list, and I wrote a blog post recapping the experience. It turned out to be surprisingly tricky, thanks to some of the list's more obscure inclusions and my self-imposed constraint of not making the drinks myself. In the post, I document the journey’s twists and turns, interesting bars it took me to, and my new favorite cocktails. Cheers!

Street View

From Matt (and Yufeng): This was a really fun collaboration inspired by the discord server! I came across Yufeng’s project and thought that it could tell a really cool story to bring people into the data for greater exploration. Yufeng had already done the difficult part (collecting the data), so this was a relatively straightforward exercise in storytelling!

Reworked Guitar Hero Guitar

From Emma: I took an old Guitar Hero guitar for PS2 and modded it into a midi instrument! Had an artist use it on stage to play a phat synth and it made my inner child extremely happy. I replaced the internal PCBs with my own custom ones. I harvested the strum buttons off the old board though, which, funny enough, were surprisingly similar to tactile keyboard switches. No wonder it felt so satisfying to strum.
