My mom’s death slowed me down enough to be present with so many other losses, trauma, and past pain I had been carrying for decades. Experiences that had shaped by life yet hadn’t truly been witnessed or given the depth of care they so desperately needed.

It had never cross my mind to consider I had been carrying so much grief. Partly because just like most of us, we weren’t taught that grief can come with any change, big or small, and I was often rewarded for my ability to be resilient even as a child.

And if you’re someone who’s good in a crisis, who holds things together for everyone else, who was taught that just dusting yourself off and keep going was a badge of honor, or that everything that happened to you, was for you, you probably weren’t given the space to grieve any of it either.

So you kept going. Kept striving. Kept overcoming.

The thing is, unacknowledged grief doesn’t go away. It builds up and begins to show up in short tempers, exhaustion or now what we call burnout, in that nagging sense something’s off when everything you worked for is right in front of you yet feels empty.

The moment you name your losses, life changes. It becomes an opportunity for you finally get to express and feel what you’ve endured with presence, love and compassion.

This was my experience. So much healing came from having the opportunity to name what I lost: innocence, safety, hope, friendships, parts of my identity, the list goes on.

As a result of how powerful this experience was for me and now for my clients, I’ve created the Loss in Life Transitions Inventory.

It captures over 50 life changes that can lead to grief, so you can start putting names to what you’ve been carrying.

I bought her a few cards — we always loved having a variety, and I even found one with four mini cards tucked inside. So cute! I sang “Happy Birthday” to her, the Stevie Wonder version of course. Then I danced to a few songs we used to dance to together.

Why Celebrating Our Deceased Loved Ones Matters

The actions of love continue even when your loved one is no longer physically here. Love simply changes shape.

Maybe you have your own version. A meal you cook on a certain day.
A song you play in the car. A place where you feel closer to them than anywhere else. Something you return to faithfully, year after year.

I asked for people to share what their loved ones who’ve transitioned enjoyed,
the answers came pouring in:

• Flowers.

• Licorice for road trips.

• My grandma loved BB King, and she’d make us dance with her to the songs.

• Mama was amazing cook.

• My dad loved chili cheese Fritos. When I crave them, I know he’s with me.

• Watching 90 Day Fiancé.

• My grandma loved Cheesecake and Jim Reeves’ music.

• Ladybugs. My grandma loved them, and they come to me often.

• My grandparents loved Conecuh sausage and gumbo.

Every one of these is a bond still alive. There is a name for what all of us have been doing. It’s called Continuing Bonds Theory. Although staying connected to our ancestors is common in many parts of the world, Klass and his colleagues introduced the term in 1996, challenging decades of Western thinking that treated an ongoing tie to the deceased as unhealthy.

It’s been found that continuing bonds often supports well-being, serves in healthy coping, and offers genuine comfort and peace.

However, social expectations often shape whether we express our bonds openly or keep them private. The pressure to grieve a certain way often keeps our love out of sight.

What Becomes Possible When You Free Yourself to Honor Them

There is liberation & freedom in loving someone out loud after they’re gone.

The celebration and the grief get to live in the same life. You carry your whole story with you, everywhere you go.

The people we’ve lost physically keep contributing to who we are becoming, and honoring them is how we keep receiving the blessings they gave us and continue to give.

Perhaps you’ve lost a loved one. A relationship. A dream. A role that once defined you. Perhaps you’re navigating a transition you never expected while continuing to carry responsibilities that don’t pause simply because your world has changed.

If that’s true, I want you to know something: You are not alone.

I created The Grieving Achiever’s Sanctuary because I needed a space that didn’t exist.

Throughout my own journey with loss, I discovered that many of the conversations surrounding grief felt incomplete. There were spaces dedicated to grief, and others to leadership, achievement, and personal growth. But I rarely found spaces where both could coexist.

I found very few places where people carrying significant responsibility could speak honestly about grief without being asked to minimize it, rush through it, or turn it into a lesson before they were ready.

And yet, so many of us are doing exactly that.

We are leading teams, building businesses, caring for families, serving communities, making difficult decisions, and showing up for others while quietly carrying heartbreak that few people fully understand.

The truth is that grief changes us.

Not because we are broken.

Because loss asks us to become acquainted with parts of ourselves we may have never met before.

Over time, I came to understand that grief is not simply something to survive.

It can also become a pathway to liberation.

Not because loss is something we would choose. Not because suffering is inherently meaningful. But because grief has a way of exposing the places where we have been living according to expectations that no longer fit, identities we have outgrown, and stories that are no longer ours to carry.

An opportunity to rediscover ourselves.

To reclaim forgotten parts of who we are.

To find the freedom to be all of who we are.

A place where you can bring the fullness of your experience. The sorrow. The uncertainty. The resilience. The questions. The hope.

A place where you do not have to perform your healing or pretend that everything is fine.

Together, we will explore what grief reveals, what healing makes possible, and what becomes available when we stop carrying our pain alone.

We will talk about loss honestly.

We will make room for the complexities of leadership and achievement.

We will explore what it means to rebuild after profound change.

And most importantly, we will create space for one another to be witnessed.

Because healing happens differently when we are no longer hiding.

Because freedom becomes possible when we stop carrying what was never meant to be carried alone.
