Well, today is the last day of the academic year here in the UK. The kiddies will be bursting out of the school gates later today, which means it’s been a full two years since I left teaching to go fully self-employed as an artist and art tutor.

Two years! Honestly, where on earth has that gone?

I won’t beat around the bush, but growing a business has been hard work. Don't get me wrong, teaching was hard work too, but that was a stressful, drowning-in-workload kind of hard. This is totally different. This is “I’m utterly passionate about this business and want it to succeed” kind of hard work. So I have been putting everything into it.

There’s been a lot of trial and error, difficult conversations which has made me flap and quite a few changes along the way. Most of those changes have forced me to put my business hat on, which, let's be honest, is always a bit scary when you’re a creative soul and worry about what everyone else thinks (I am trying to stop this).

Putting my prices up and restructuring my art lessons gave me some very restless and sleepless nights. It brought up a lot of issues around self-worth and value. I’ve had to do a lot of inner work on my own self-belief, as well as pushing myself to network and get advice from other business owners - Victoria and the members in Collab and Scale are fabulous!

I had a massive revamp of my branding, photos and website at the start of the year (huge shoutout to Ange at Upbrand and Andrew and Becky at Time Lock Photography!). It’s had a massive impact. I'm no longer overthinking my designs and newsletters… it just feels seamless.

Tackling social media has been… well... an adventure! Those pesky algorithms are forever changing and I know I’ll never keep up. But I’ve been playing around with it all and even being brave enough to put my face on camera! I just need to talk more on there! (@nickiregart for Instagram and Facebook)

I’ve also been networking a lot more by going to events, listening to speakers and joining a couple of business memberships. It’s been so enriching and hearing other people's magic advice has been incredibly inspiring.

Where I want to go next...

Of course, like any business, I want to keep improving and reaching more people. My big, burning drive is to:

Enrich people to reconnect with their creativity, build confidence and skills, and explore their own authentic artistic voice.

That is my absolute passion! And when I say "people", I really mean everyone. I work with children, teens and adults (mainly women, but a handful of lovely men too!). It’s incredibly broad, but I adore it. I meet so many fabulous people.

Looking ahead, there are three main areas I want to focus on:

1. Working with a lot more adults

2. Taking things outside the studio—doing more networking, events and building an online community and classes.

3. Deciding what to do with this Substack (whether to keep going, change it up or stop it entirely).

Which brings me to you...

A bit of an honest dilemma

Now, stopping Substack is no mean feat. I looked at my numbers the other day and nearly fell off my chair (which wouldn’t be the first in my clumsy state). I have 6 paid subscribers (thank you from the bottom of my heart!), 362 free subscribers and 1,226 followers. Plus, I’ve published 183 articles. Wow! That is a heck of a lot of writing when I come to think of it!

So you can see why I’m torn. Substack is not a five-minute task. There’s the planning, the writing, filming, photographing and then the promoting on socials. But more importantly, in our busy lives, are you actually reading it? I know a lot of creators say they love writing on Substack, but let’s be honest, it can be absolute hell for the readers to keep up with!

Because I don’t get many comments or likes, I often feel like I’m standing at the entrance of a dark tunnel shouting, “Is anyone out there?!”

I really want to make sure I’m spending my time where it serves you best. So, I have a few questions for you, and I would love it if you could give me your honest thoughts in the comments.

• Am I wasting valuable time writing on Substack when I could be focusing that energy elsewhere?

• Would you prefer an online membership? Somewhere we could gather on Zoom to make art, do Q&As, run mini-projects and build a lovely little community together on Telegram? I am actually quite excited about this one!!!!

• Should I move away from Substack and focus on my website newsletter instead? I could email you directly with arty prompts and creative activities.

• Would you prefer a simple blog on my website? A space where my students and I can write about gallery visits, share our artwork, and post tips and tricks.

On August 18, 2025, I visited the Saatchi Gallery in London for the exhibition titled Summer Season Flowers – Flora Contemporary Art & Culture. Situated on two floors and over nine major gallery spaces, the exhibition features large-scale installations, original art, photography, fashion, archival objects, and graphic design that explore the ongoing influence of flowers on creativity and human expression. To encourage involvement in the exhibition, you could wear anything floral to receive a discount on your entry. Mum wore a flowery dress, and there were lots of different versions, including men wearing flowery ties! This gave calm but positive atmosphere and the audience was really interactive with the art. No one felt awkward wearing floral dresses, accessories or shoes.

The first room we came to was full of different mediums of paintings with a floral theme. My favourite was a sunflower, a layered acrylic picture by Gordon Cheung called City of Gardens. The texture and colours really showcased a different image. There was also a digital picture, which was an arrangement of flowers, filmed from fresh to wilting. It was sped up so when you looked carefully, you could see the changes in the picture live and watch the flowers wilt. This felt different to seeing a painting that’s still life as you got to see the life cycle of a flower. Even though the flowers looked wilted (left photo) it was still really interesting to look as one minute every flower would drop a petal. I felt more emerged in the video artwork compared to a painting.

There were so many different interpretations of flowers from clothes, fashion, sculptures and even music albums featuring flowers. There was an interactive room where the floral display followed movement in the room. I really enjoyed the fashion as I really enjoyed the vintage Vivienne Westwood look and how she incorporated flowers into her designs. The fashion created wouldn’t be something you’d wear in everyday life. They looked like wedding and party dresses. There were lots dark colours in the negative space of the clothing and the flowers were very colourful which gave good contrast. The white wedding dress was in the middle of the display alongside the other dresses which bought it altogether. I liked that you could see the fabric texture as she used a lot of fish nets and silk together. I felt seeing this has help me understand how colours and textures could be put together in floristry such as adding fabric in my flower arrangements.

One room was entirely dedicated installation piece by Rebecca Louise Law, made up of over 100,000 dried flowers. This was my favourite display as you could view it from different platforms to get a different perspective and also walk around it. Close up you see the flowers used and how they were put together using string and wire, and how it was suspended. You could see all the tiny little flowers binding together, when standing close to it and you could smell the dried flowers such as lavender which felt immersive. If I did a display with dried flowers, I could use this way of working and I would use flowers that hold their smell such as lavender, camomile, jasmine and eucalyptus. Looking down at the display you could see that it was more filled densely at the top and it drapes down delicately creating more negative space. The flowers that were bigger and vibrant drew my eye more than the delicate flowers around them as they stood out more and also my eye follow the drape downwards. I would include this in my own floristry design to create balance and interest.

She began collecting waste flowers in 2003, with waste flowers and donations. Rebecca creates these installations only using natural materials and involves the local community to create them. I liked being able to walk through the installation and see close up the attention to detail. This made me think how I could preserve and dry flowers for either art or arrangements in floristry. I have started learning to dry different varieties of flowers in my spare time and would like to explore more ways to arrange them. I have made bouquets using colour themes and mixture of textures and dried flower mobiles on wood.

There were some sculptures and pieces that looked simplistic. I didn’t like these as they were modern or cartoon-based, and I only feel connected to art that is more life-like and intricate and looks complex. One arrangement was made of cutlery and metal which felt heavy – this is completely opposite to a flower arrangement which is light and airy. It was interesting to see them but it didn’t inspire me to implement it in my own work.

This experience gave me lots of ideas that I hadn’t considered to create before using different art forms for botanicals. I have been inspired to use a range of art techniques, principles, elements and structures such as trying out dried flower arrangements, incorporating fabric, explore texture and colour combinations and develop my understanding of principles of art in my own floristry work. It made me think about how people came up with these ideas for art forms and how I could learn them and share them.

The creation I was most curious about was the image below. This is Photograph UV – Printed on nanocrystalline cellulose – I had no idea what this was, but would love somehow to try to create it! It is a selection of black and white photos UV printed onto glass and acrylic plates infused with nano crystals. To do this I could either research how to create using the Internet and social media or see if there are any courses or workshops on this.

There were lots of interactive displays and sculptures, which enhanced the exhibition as it got you involved in the creation and kept you engaged on your way round. One of the interactive displays was projected on a wall which has digital floral art. When you moved near it, they plants started to move or grow. People found this quite engaging as this was quite busy around it. It was interactive and bright which caught peoples eye.

In comparison, it echoed the feeling I had during the gallery visit at Kew Gardens, though the environments couldn’t have been more different. Saatchi Gallery held everything indoors, in a darker, more enclosed space, while at Kew the light‑filled greenhouse created an airy feeling where orchids were arranged as living artworks.

I would definitely recommend it; it was interesting because there were so many different types and forms of art appealing to all ages, including children, as there was interactive art. The display was very visual and colourful, and kept you engaged as well as learning about new techniques. Most of the audience were ladies however there were a mix of ages which was nice as being young there were other people of a similar age with the same interests.

Choose one object to observe and study, such as a leaf, flower, mug, piece of fruit, photograph or something else. Look closely at the object and take note on what colours you can see.

Create a small palette by making 5–8 colour swatches that match the different colours that you can see on your object. You may be surprised and discover colours you didn’t catch your eye at first. The more you look, the more you’ll see.

Use your created colour palette to create a small abstract pattern, simple illustration of your object or page of marks in your sketchbook.

Here in the UK, the nights will start to slowly return, as we have passed the summer solstice. So I thought it would be apt to look at shadows. These progressive activities will help you build confidence with working with the strong values, so there is no pressure of complex colour mixing, which I see some of my beginner adult clients stumbling on.

Working with shadows can really give a piece of art atmosphere and depth… and then adding the magic of light is just electric!

What Mastery Monday Offers

Spend three minutes looking at the shadows cast by an object near you, such as a coffee mug, a plant or your hand. Without looking down at your paper, draw the shapes of the shadows using a continuous line rather drawing the object itself. Try and let go of perfection and enjoy the movement of your hand.

Warm and Cool Colours

Divide your page into two sections. You can label the top if you wish: warm on the one and cool on the other. Fill one side with colours that feel warm, such as reds, oranges and yellows. Then fill the other with colours that feel cool, such as blues, greens and violets.

You could use simple shapes, patterns or marks, using any mediums of your choice, to explore each group of colours.

Have a little more time?

Have a go and try blending a warm and a cool colour together. As they blend, observe how they contrast, balance or create something unexpected, especially if you use wetter mediums.

Close your eyes and imagine a landscape painted in soft blues and greens. Now imagine the same landscape painted in different colours, like bright reds and oranges. Although the subject may be the same composition, the feeling, through its colour, would be very different.

Colour has a powerful way of influencing how we experience a piece of artwork we are viewing. It can create calm, energy, warmth, mystery, excitement, nostalgia, comfort, or joy.

This week, we are going to spend some time exploring what colour might be communicating through our mixed media artwork.

So today, it’s about discovering how a single colour can be showcased in so many variations and hues. It’s amazing how there are so many subtle differences within one colour.

What’s in the Pocket?

One Colour, Many Many Versions

Choose a single colour from the colour wheel: yellow, green, blue, violet, red or orange. In your sketchbook, on a pin board, mount board or on a sheet of paper, fill it with different versions of that colour.

You might find colours that are lighter, darker, brighter, softer, saturated and desaturated.

Arrange your colours in anyway you fancy, such as in swatches, shapes, patterns, columns, rows or a mishmash.

Observe your collection of the chosen colour. Notice how different the versions there are and how they can create contrast, depth and interest. You may discover a saturated, lime green doesn’t give you the same joy as a olive green, or a light blue gives you a sense of calmness compared to a phthalo blue.

Try creating another collection of a different colour and see which colours catch your eye.

That’s because you love them!

I am very much drawn to greens, blues and purples in my artwork… green especially. It just gives me that sense of calm and I love nature and gardening - which is pretty much green! And I am a ginger gal, so green is a fabulous match when it comes to clothing.

What colour are you drawn to? You maybe attracted to blue hues, or even earthy browns, soft greens or warm yellows might catch your eye. Confident, vibrant reds could be your super power in your artwork. On the other hand, there may be colours you rarely choose, because you don’t feel called to them. The colours could feel too bright, too bold or unfamiliar to you. For me, red is my least favourite colour in artwork. I just don’t feel drawn to it at all. Nevertheless, I am very drawn to a red geranium. Why? Because my late Grandad grew loads of them, so this striking red flower brings me beautiful memories.

In Foundations to Flourish this week, it isn’t about learning colour theory or finding the “right” colour combinations, you will become curious and notice the colours you are naturally drawn to.

Choose two colours. This could have been from your colour hunt, colours that catch your eye or from other collections.

Using the medium of your choice, create simple shapes, patterns or marks using only those colours you have selected.

In front of you, experiment with placing them next to each other in different ways. Look at them and see whether they look like a fabulous couple or if they need a divorce! Do the colours create an atmosphere, a mood or does it spark a memory?

Have a little more time?

Add a third colour and see how it changes the overall feel of the arrangement of colours.

Experiment with other colour pairing and see what catches your eye.

It isn’t always the colour that catches your eye. It is the value.

Value refers to how light or dark something appears. Every shape, texture, material, mark and colour has a value. Some feel light and airy, while others feel dark and heavy. Value relationships in a composition help to create mood, focus, atmosphere, balance and movement.

In basic terms, it’s like looking at an old black and white photograph, which shows the range of values of the subject taken.

Today, you will spend some time exploring the light and dark, and everything in between, in your mixed media artwork. I have included some videos to show you more about value too.

Colour Hunt

Choose one colour and look around your home, garden, workplace or wherever you are, to find as many examples of that colour as you can.

You could either take photos of what you observe and create a little folder on your phone….

or…

You could create a page in your sketchbook inspired by your discoveries by either drawing the objects, making colour swatches, collecting small scraps, or write what you find.

Have a little more time?

Choose a second colour and repeat the process. Afterwards, compare the colours you’ve collected. Think about:

• Which colour was easier to find?

• Which surprised you the most?

• What variations of the colours did you discover?

You’ll probably notice, the more you observe, that the colour appears in places you may not have realised.

Firstly, I will apologise as last week I was in sunny Devon, so Mastery Monday that usually comes out on the first Monday of the month is a week late.

I have been sat pondering on what to focus on for this month’s Mastery Monday. It is quite evident through conversations with clients that just to try and sit down and get into the creative flow can be challenging. Due to people’s nervous systems being high, it can take twenty minutes to an hour to get in the creative mode. So, with this in mind, I am slightly changing the way that Mastery Monday works. There will be a warm-up task at the beginning, which you can implement at the start of any of the activity. This will hopefully help you to get your mind settled and in the flow of creativity. Let me know how this works for you if you try it out.

Also, I am trying to add videos. I fear that we are losing human connection with the age of AI and I am trying to be really brave and put my face in front of the camera. Additionally, us artists, are very visual and sometimes it’s easier to learn through seeing rather than reading – I am one of those people. Again, let me know if you prefer this or whether reading is your vibe.

This month, we are going to take inspiration from the natural world around us. I live in the Midlands, UK, so I will be looking at my garden and around the neighbourhood. Your environment may be very different.

You may be inspired by a shell collected from a beach walk, a leaf found on the path or an interesting stone tucked under a plant. It could even be a seed head discovered in the garden. Nature gives us an abundance of endless opportunities to observe, explore and create. Rather than rushing from one object to another, spend some time getting to know a single, natural treasure, through your observation, building your artistic skills and through creative play.

Over the last few weeks in Foundations to Flourish, we’ve been exploring many techniques with mixed media, such as composition, overlapping, focal points and repetition. We have been looking at where our eyes travel on the surface and how the different elements interact with one another.

We are now going to explore balance. Now, balance isn’t about making sense of having everything equal, but it’s about balancing the way the composition feels.

Choose a coloured medium that you have in your collection. This could be a coloured pencil, paint, collage materials, a marker pen or whatever you have available.

Select one colour that catches your eye or expresses your emotion. Fill your paper or a page in your sketchbook with small shapes, marks or objects inspired by the colour you have chosen.

Have a little more time?

Add a second colour that you think works well with your chosen first colour.

Play around with placing the colours (with your chosen medium) next to each other, overlapping them or blending them.

When observing artwork, our eyes naturally find somewhere to land, quite quickly. This could be a bold shape, a dark value or a known form. When the eyes are drawn into the piece, they then begin to move around the surface like a dance.

In Foundations to Flourish this week, you’re going to start to figure out what stands out to capture the eye of the viewer. You want to hook them in, just like captions on reels and carousels on social media.

The element that catches the eye is known as a focal point, emphasis or centre of interest. So many words - I know - but they all mean the same.

Zoom In

Choose a drawing tool that you’d like to use.

Pick something small to draw.

Now, imagine you are zooming in very close.

Draw just a tiny section of it… just a little part of it.

Have a little more time?

Zoom in even further (hopefully your eyes can see this clearly!)

Your drawing will probably become more abstract.

This will allow you to see more and more.
