1. I had to make a hard pivot in my business in 2025 because being a hypnotherapist wasn’t paying the bills.

Hypnosis is an incredibly powerful tool for change, but many people still have negative associations with it, and demand for the skill simply wasn’t where I needed it to be to build the business I wanted.

 A lot of people said, "Just teach hypnosis," but it really wasn't something that was calling to my heart.

I still offer hypnosis; it’s just one of my tools now…not the whole business.

2. I felt really lost and defeated because I had actually been featured in major publications like Forbes and The Wall Street Journal for my work.

It’s weird to have the certifications, the press, the big-name partnerships, but none of that translated into a meaningful income, and that was a really hard thing to reconcile.

My ego didn't want to look at it, but I kept pushing.

 And now being on the other side of it, it feels like a lot of time that was just lost.

3. I had to take a hard look at my other skills, experiences, and lessons.

And the biggest lesson I kept coming back to was my own experience overcoming social anxiety.

The funny thing is, I felt embarrassed to talk about it.

Who wants to admit they struggle with social anxiety when their whole business is about confidence?

But here's what I realized…my favorite hypnotherapy clients were the ones who actually struggled with social anxiety.

And secondly, that fear of having your weakness exposed and used against you is a root cause of social anxiety.

Btw, in case you don’t know, social anxiety is the fear of being judged in social situations, and also the fear that those who judge you are right. Your brain says…I’m awkward. I’m boring. I’m not smart enough. (There’s so many things the brain says…)

And the thing is, I’m so good at helping others find their voice and build confidence on video, stages, and networking events because I know the pain intimately.

4. Even though I started my career as a publicist in 2004 and have media-trained clients for years, I couldn’t speak on camera without shaking and sweating until 2017.

I know what it’s like to desperately want to be seen while simultaneously wanting to disappear.

 And I also know what it's like to look confident on the outside, to wear the blazer and look pulled together while your nervous system is telling you to get the hell out of the room.

5. And just last week, I experienced social anxiety at an event in Dallas.

I attended an event at Dallas Market Hall with a friend in the fashion industry. I tried to be friendly, but I noticed how some of the women sized me up and didn’t even bother continuing the conversation.

Maybe it had nothing to do with me. Maybe it was simply because I wasn’t in their industry and couldn’t further their business.

But whatever the reason, it brought back a lot of those old, icky feelings. Feelings of not being thin enough in rooms of thin people. Feelings of maybe they see me as a Latina and think we have nothing in common.

The difference now is that I have the tools to move through these thoughts instead of letting them define how I see myself.

And I think that’s why, despite how hard this business pivot has been, I feel like there’s a deeper mission living inside of it.

Maybe this wasn’t a failure.

Maybe it was a redirection toward my purpose.

Because sometimes the parts of ourselves we feel the most embarrassed about are the very parts that give us something meaningful to say.

So if you’re feeling lost or defeated because your path has taken a hard left, I see you.

I encourage you to get closer to the parts of yourself that you feel scared or embarrassed to express.

Something really important might be waiting there for you.

Cars were whizzing down 8th Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC, and with each step forward, I was building up the courage to do something that genuinely terrified me.

Btw, I was also trying to overcome my battle with social anxiety at the time...

So trust me, I know what it feels like to face a camera while your heart is beating so fast it feels like you’re mid-HIIT workout.

But learning to show up on video changed my life in ways I couldn’t have predicted.

It’s actually one of the ways I grew my hypnotherapy business so quickly.

I was consistently creating videos when the spa director at Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown started watching me show up and talk about my work. Eventually, she invited me to “audition” for their resident healer program.

And I started seeing the same thing happen with potential clients.

When I taught a virtual masterclass for a community of entrepreneurs, they got to experience how I thought, how I taught, and what it felt like to learn from me before ever working with me.

Many of them eventually became clients.

That’s one of the things I think we underestimate about video. It doesn’t just help more people discover you. It lets people experience your expertise before they ever get on a sales call with you.

And over time, video did something else for me.

• It made me a better communicator.

• It taught me how to organize my thoughts

• It helped me articulate my ideas clearly and get to the point.

Those skills aren’t limited to just the camera.

And as a service-based business owner, there’s another reason I think video matters even more now.

Discovery is changing. People aren’t only finding experts through referrals, Instagram, Google, or LinkedIn anymore.

They’re increasingly using AI tools to ask questions, research problems, compare solutions, and decide who they want to learn from.

The more clearly you communicate your expertise online, including through searchable video, the more opportunities you create for your ideas to be discovered.

So let me give this to you straight...

Here’s what I’d actually do if I were a founder or service-based business owner trying to get confident on camera today.

1. I’d choose one platform and stop worrying about being everywhere.

Personally, I like YouTube because your videos can continue getting discovered long after you publish them.

2. I’d get crystal clear on the ONE person I wanted my videos to help.

Not “anyone who needs my service.” Select one specific person with specific problems, questions, fears, and goals. When you know exactly who you’re talking to, it becomes much easier to know what to say.

3. I’d write down 10 questions my dream client is already asking and turn each one into a video.

Think about the questions people ask you on sales calls. The questions clients ask during sessions. The things you find yourself explaining over and over again.

4. I’d film something every day, even if I didn’t publish every day.

This is SO important. Because camera confidence comes from reps and the mindset work. Every time you film, you’re building your ability to communicate and your capacity to enjoy being seen.

5. I’d STOP scripting every sentence.

Instead, I’d learn to speak from 3 to 5 bullet points. A full script can make you feel safer in the beginning, but it can also make you sound like you’re trying to remember lines instead of talking to another human being.

6. I’d give myself permission to stumble over my words.

Serious. Just pause if you need to remember, restart the sentence. Say something imperfectly. And use editing tools like Descript to make it incredibly easy to clean up the parts of the video you don’t want to keep.

Camera confidence isn’t something you overthink your way into.

It’s something you build by supporting your mindset and developing the skill.

I was trembling. My face went completely white. I was so terrified of being judged that I could barely get the words out. (You can actually see my first videos here…if you dare.)

So I did what we’re all told to do:

“Fake it till you make it.”

At the time, there was a woman whose videos I loved watching. She was cool, unaffected, a little edgy. She never seemed flustered.

And I wanted to be like her instead of feeling so insecure and uncertain.

So I started mimicking her. Copying her energy. For a while, I thought that was the answer.

But then I’d watch my videos back and feel… gross.

They didn’t feel like me.

It felt like I was watching myself perform a version of who I thought I needed to be on camera.

And that was the problem.

So how do you stop feeling fake on camera without becoming stiffer, more polished, or even more self-conscious?

Not because I don’t know how to take time off to rest. Because my brain is freshest on Sunday mornings, and I can make decisions without the interruption of 20 email notifications.

Here’s how I break down the two hours:

I ease into my black leather recliner where I sip my coffee, and transition out of my dreamy state. I think about the dreams I had the night before and whether they’re trying to tell me anything.

(and yes, I’m smiling underneath the mask)

Reflect on the Week

One thing high-achievers building a business or personal brand almost always skip: the post-mortem. It’s the difference between adjusting strategically and just doing more until you burn out, and this is a REAL problem.

I strap on my red light mask (yes, I’m kind of obsessed with it) and start my Weekly Visibility Check-In on my ReMarkable. I like writing things down without the paper waste.

This is where I find out what I actually did, what I enjoyed, what’s not working, and where I’m still kinda hiding. For example: I said I was going to create Trial Reels for the last two weeks. I haven’t.

Once I have that insight, I move on to planning via my three buckets.

1. Strengthen the Net

These are the actions that move my business forward.

Most of my new clients find me through search and my partnership with the Four Seasons, so those two channels get the most support. I write article ideas on my whiteboard and map out how I’ll promote them across the week.

Then I go back and look at past priority content that just needs a little push. I have long-form YouTube videos that keep growing months later just from an occasional Instagram Story link or a Substack embed. Too many people miss this and stay stuck in constant-creation mode. (Go back and promote something you’ve already created…like an old top Substack article.)

Finally, I look at what I’m investing in for my own continued education. I’m always reading and coaching so I can bring more to my clients.

2. Joy Boosters

A business that feels stagnant and boring isn’t the point. So I build in activities that anchor back to my top values: connection, personal growth, creativity, wellness, freedom.

I plan time with friends and sign up for networking events I actually want to go to.

This is also where I book hair and nail appointments and pencil in travel. (I’m heading to Austin soon for a weekend business retreat with Emily Hirsh, because connecting with other business owners and learning their strategies is a shortcut to success. You can still sign up, btw.)

And lastly, I dream up one thing that feels a little daring, maybe even a long shot: the kind of thing that would genuinely rock my world if it happened. Pitching myself to a podcast. Drafting a media pitch. Outreach to host a pop-up at a luxe hotel.

3. Experiments

Last: the marketing channels I want to grow, or the revenue actions I just want to test. No proven ROI yet, but they might be worth it.

YouTube is my primary experiment; Instagram is secondary. YouTube Shorts and Trial Reels usually live here too: great for growing an audience, but not quick conversions.

Honestly, unless I commit to a full 30-day experiment as I did in April/May, these are the first things I let slide so I can focus on higher-priority work.

Everything goes on the whiteboard for the week, so I can cross things off as I go.

That’s it. Two hours, and I’m set for the week.

It works because it helps me prioritize visibility activities that actually matter to the long-term success of my business and my sanity.

This system lets you feel powerful and capable, and it gives you permission to cut things from your experiments bucket when life is life-ing. No guilt, no shame.

She’d spent the morning scrolling through social media, counting every creator already in her niche: wellness over 50. And she felt behind.

This is one of the most common things I see among high-achieving professionals taking their first steps to build something of their own. You’re excited. You’re ready. You’re finally showing up online.

Then your brain starts calculating.

It catalogs every creator who’s already ahead of you. It makes a mental list of every post, video, and opportunity you should be executing. And suddenly, the thing that lit you up two weeks ago feels completely overwhelming as you stare down at a list of 48 to-dos for just this week.

You want to begin. You don’t know where to start. And your brain tells you that every action has to be perfect, or none of it will lead anywhere.

So you go into analysis paralysis, and the dream stays on hold a little longer.

Why is this happening?

Two reasons.

One, we’ve become impatient. We want Uber Eats in 30 minutes, a sales page in 5 seconds, and a business that comes to life in 90 days or less.

Two, we have a very specific idea of what success is supposed to look like. I call it the “social media-ization of success.” The belief that as soon as you take action, you’ll go from zero to millionaire in six months. We think this because we’re hearing these stories on every feed. But these stories go viral precisely because they are rare.

Take Jessi Jean, who has taken over Instagram and TikTok with her signature “Yaps” and just launched a course that made $1.2 million. What most people scrolling past her don’t see is that she’s a former coach with years of experience in marketing and speaking. She didn’t start from zero. She started from a foundation with years of ups and downs.

The unsexy success story, the one that doesn’t go viral, is actually the most common one. It’s the entrepreneur who didn’t have a perfect idea out of the gate. Who took consistent action for years. Who had revenue ups and downs. Who tested, adjusted, and kept going.

I know that story personally. I’ve gotten caught up in this mindset, too. I’ve bought the shiny new courses that promised millionaire status and felt completely empty on the other side.

Very unsexy. And very real.

So the real work isn’t finding the perfect hook.

It’s addressing the thoughts and beliefs that make you feel 100 actions behind. It’s building the emotional capacity to take calm, strategic action day by day, without deciding you’re a failure because the build is slow.

And just this past week, I had the honor of hosting a group hypnosis session in a room full of women in this exact season of life. We were sitting in a beautiful suite at the Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown, overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

Here’s what midlife actually does.

It sneaks up on you.

One moment, you’re finally starting to come into yourself. You’re reclaiming your voice, your worth, your sense of who you are. And then, almost in the same breath, you start to notice things shifting. Your energy. Your appearance. Your body.

I spent $60,500 to overcome my fear of being seen. And when I tell people that number, I watch their faces do the thing where they’re trying to decide if I’m wise or reckless. I understand the reaction. I used to be the person who thought spending that kind of money on yourself was indulgent, maybe even irresponsible.

But I also used to be the person who couldn’t say her own name aloud in a group meeting without her heart slamming against her chest and beads of sweat forming on her upper lip.

And my shift into being seen didn’t come from a single course or a single coach. It came slowly, in layers, the way real change always does. But if I had to point to the moment something cracked open in me, it would be a Sunday afternoon lying on a blue yoga mat in an IntenSati class at an Equinox in NYC. I was surrounded by strangers, crying into a sweaty towel in a way I couldn’t stop.

You see, during the class, the instructor called out affirmations while we punched, kicked, and jumped. We said things like, “I am strong now.” “I am confident now.” We were to repeat them out loud, but I couldn’t say them, not fully, not from anywhere real, because the voice I’d been living with for years was running a completely different script.

“You have nothing interesting to say.”

“You’re not thin enough.”

“You need a nose job.”

 I'd been so used to that voice that I didn't know that there was another way until I had to say the words during that class. And it was in such contrast to what I'd been feeling inside that it was impossible to ignore.

That was the day I stopped trying to just focus on the outside and started working on what was actually in the way.

What came after that, the coaches, the certifications, the masterclasses, the deep dives into belief and nervous system tools and Human Design, all of it, added up to $60,500 over the years.

And… every single dollar came back, plus more. It came back in the clients whose lives have changed. It came back in rooms full of people leaning in. It came in the form of an invitation from the Four Seasons to offer my services at their spa. It came in, with all the podcast guests telling me that our interview was one of the best they’d ever done.

I was five years old when my teacher taped my mouth shut for talking too much.

I didn’t cry. I didn’t fight it. I obediently wore the tape. And somewhere in my small, five-year-old mind, a conclusion was forming: talking has consequences.

I didn’t recognize that belief for decades.

A Few Years Later, It Got Louder

In fourth grade, a new teacher moved my desk away from the rest of the class. Same reason. Too much talking.

I wasn’t just being contained anymore. I was being isolated.

Then came fifth grade. I organized a performance in front of my entire school. I even had the late 80s bangs and pink acid-washed skirt. I was genuinely, nothing-can-go-wrong excited. Then…the music didn’t work. The crowd started booing. A kid shouted, “You’re ugly!”

And just like that, three moments I’d almost forgotten were quietly stacked into one firm belief: It’s unsafe to be seen. Your voice is a problem.

What Is a Visibility Wound?

A Visibility Wound is what happens when your brain and nervous system experience a moment of intense humiliation, rejection, or silencing in the context of being seen. In that moment, a quiet and firm decision gets made: this is dangerous. We are NOT doing this again.

It doesn’t have to be dramatic.

The moments can be big: public humiliation, bullying, being laughed offstage. Or they can be small and cumulative. A comment you overheard like, “Who does she think she is?” The eye roll when you spoke up in a meeting. Something a teacher said that was meant as a correction but landed as personal criticism.

The size of the moment doesn’t matter. What matters is the conclusion your brain makes about what happens when people see you.

Here’s What Makes This So Disorienting

Years later, I became a publicist.

I spent years getting other people in front of cameras, onto stages, and into magazines and broadcast. I was very good at it. And I had no idea that those three moments, the tape, the isolated desk, the boos, were still running the show.

Until I had to do it for myself.

Picture what this looks like…someone who genuinely understands how visibility works, completely turning red and sweating, when her own name is called as she stands to introduce herself at a conference. That’s not a strategy problem. That’s a Visibility Wound.

Why “Just Show Up” Advice Doesn’t Work for Us

The common advice to just take action isn’t wrong. Action matters.

But it skips an entire step for those of us with Visibility Wounds.

When you push through exposure without addressing the belief underneath, it’s like plugging a high-voltage Dyson Airwrap into a circuit that can’t hold the current. Something blows. And when it does, your brain files that experience right alongside the fifth-grade performance and the kindergarten tape. More evidence. More proof. Being seen leads to pain.

So, I say this with so much love…

You are not staying off camera because you need to lose 10 lbs.

You are not avoiding social media because you don’t have time.

You are not skipping the speaking opportunity because you don’t know what to say.

You are doing all of those things because somewhere in your nervous system, being visible still registers as a threat. Your Visibility Wound is making your modern business decisions. And it is very good at disguising itself as logic.

This is why big-hearted business owners, the ones with something genuinely valuable to give, stay completely invisible for years. Not from lack of ambition. Not from lack of heart. From a nervous system doing exactly what it learned to do to protect you.

How to Begin Healing a Visibility Wound

This is not a weekend project. But there is a place to start.

Step One: Find the Moments

Sit with a pen and paper. Move through your personal history and look for the moments where being seen went wrong. The dramatic ones and the quiet ones you’ve almost forgotten. The ones that still make your stomach tighten a little when you think about them. Write them all down.

Step Two: Name the Belief

For each moment, ask: what did this teach me about being visible? What did my brain decide was true about what happens when people look at me?

You might hear things like:

• “My voice is a problem.”

• “If I stand out, I’ll be punished.”

• “If I get it wrong, I’ll be humiliated.”

These are NOT your truths. They are your conclusions. And there is a difference.

Step Three: Interrupt the Loop

When you name these moments consciously, you begin to interrupt the subconscious pattern that’s been running on autopilot. Your nervous system has been treating old moments as current threats. Naming them accurately is the first step to telling your nervous system: that was then. I am safe now.

You Don’t Need More Pressure

You need support for the part of you that still believes visibility leads to rejection, criticism, or shame.

I healed my own Visibility Wound through hypnotherapy. Not the stage show kind. The kind that looks like a deeply relaxed, meditative state, paired with mindset coaching that reaches the subconscious beliefs driving your behavior. ( It didn't happen overnight. It didn't even happen in one session, but it did happen.)

What I know with complete certainty is that your beliefs direct your life experience. If you believe it’s not safe to be seen, everything you build will reflect that belief. Every strategy, every rebrand, every new platform will hit the same invisible wall.

This series marks my return to confronting my own Visibility Threshold, which is one’s capacity to be seen. And I’m bringing you along for the ride. You’ll see what it actually looks like to be a visibility coach becoming more visible — experiments, breakthroughs, the feelings I have to move through, and the framework I use (my SEEN Framework) to navigate it all.

The Fatal Mistake You Might Be Making

Here’s the mistake…and it’s an easy one to make, especially when you’re passionate about what you do.

You got so excited about sharing your knowledge, journey, and expertise that you left the reader completely out.

Your article reads as me, me, and more me.

You didn’t invite your reader to the party. They were never on the guest list — The Uninvited.

“But wait,” you might be thinking. “I wrote this article from my experience so they could learn from it.”

Fair. And that’s exactly where it gets tricky.

Your copy says, “I used to struggle with X, and then I discovered Y.” And while your story has real value, your reader subconsciously tunes out because the article isn’t about them. (Unless you’re already a household name, that “I” framing works against you every time.)

So here’s a real truth that should shape every single word you write: people are primarily motivated by what’s in it for them. Not because they’re selfish, but because they’re human. Your reader is scanning your article, asking one question: “Is this going to help me?”

Make sure the answer is yes.

And here’s the quick and dirty of it: YOU is the most powerful word in copywriting.

How Can You Fix It - Today!

You’re the guide. You have real-life experience that can change someone’s life. The goal isn’t to erase your story; it’s to let your reader step inside of it and get something from it.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

Before: “I began to doubt that I could ever lose the mid-section weight gain, and then I realized…I need to walk after every meal.”

After: “I began to doubt that I could ever lose the mid-section weight gain, and then I realized…you need to walk after every meal.”

 Now notice that the little shift was so subtle.

In the hypnotherapy world, we call that an embedded command. So when I place “you” in there into that copy, it’s speaking to the subconscious mind, and people start to tune in. They don’t know necessarily why…

This is how your wisdom becomes their win.

The formula is simple:

Phrase 1 sets up your lived experience → Subject: I

Phrase 2 delivers the lesson → Subject: You

(That’s it. That’s the switch.)

Your Turn To Invite Them

Now, we’re going to put this info into practice so you can actually improve your conversion rate.

PART 1: Go find an old article. You know the one (the post that starts with “I” and stays there). Rewrite one paragraph using the YOU shift.

PART 2: Then, reshare the article in your Notes, adding a line that calls out the reader. Something, like…“If you struggle with X, let me share how to overcome it.”

Hotels. Restaurants. Celebrity chefs. No-name chefs that I turned into recognized names. I was great at it. I got them into the press. I helped them refine their messaging so they could be camera-ready. I could do it in my sleep.

I got everyone else visible.

BUT, when it came to me? I’d walk into my own events and quietly locate the bar. (Not my proudest chapter, but I’m just being honest.)

I wasn’t lacking strategy or skills. I had a master’s degree, a VP title, and years of experience that should have made being visible feel easy. Right?

What I was lacking... was safety.

My nervous system learned that being seen was UNSAFE. And no amount of stage presence training was going to fix that.

Here’s What Nobody Tells You About Visibility & Content Creation

The business world will sell you a thousand solutions to the visibility problem. We talk a whole lot about content strategy.

Just post more. Show up on video. Pitch yourself to podcasts. Go to the networking events. Hire a social media manager. Take the speaker training. (I took the speaker training. And improv classes. And acting classes.)

And here’s the thing... they’re not wrong.

Those things do help…if you actually do them.

But content creation courses treat the symptom, not usually the source of the problem.

Because if you’re a solo business owner who knows you should be more visible and still finds yourself:

• Writing blogs that feel productive but aren’t actually leading to clients

• Skipping networking events or getting a little too tipsy to get through them

• Watching peers land podcast interviews and press coverage while feeling envious and telling yourself that you’ll never catch up to them

• Tweaking your website for the forty-seventh time instead of actually telling people IRL that you can help them

...then the missing piece isn’t just more content strategy.

The real problem is the difficult emotions underneath the strategy. The ones that show up the moment you’re about to truly expand your visibility.

The Feelings Are Layered (And They’re Not New)

There’s usually a lot going on under the surface that holds you back.

It’s the fear of judgment. (What will they think? What if I say something wrong? What if nobody cares?)

It’s the imposter syndrome. (Who am I to be the expert here? There are people so much more qualified.)

It’s the deeper fear of being truly seen. Not just kinda noticed, but feeling like you’re in the spotlight. Feeling like you’ll be critiqued at any moment. (gulp)

And all of it brings you right to the same place.

I call this the Visibility Threshold.

Picture an actual doorway. Your dream outcome is on the other side, and you can see your thriving business clearly. The clients you want. The SXSW stage you belong on. You’re named highlighted in the press.

You’ve walked up to this doorway a hundred times. You know exactly what it looks like. You’ve even visualized it during that spiritual women’s circle you attended.

And you haven’t crossed it…

Not because you don’t want to. (You desperately want to cross it.) But because the threshold marks the edge of what you currently believe you’re capable of emotionally handling... and something in you just won’t let you step past that line.

Here’s what makes the Visibility Threshold especially maddening: the doorway isn’t locked. There’s no black-suited bouncer. No one is actually stopping you. The only thing between you and the other side is a feeling your nervous system has been holding onto since long before you started this business.

The Visibility Threshold doesn’t care how talented you are or how long you’ve been in business.

When you reach it, you stop.

The real question is... what would it take to finally cross?

Why Knowing This Doesn’t Fix It

Here’s the MOST frustrating part.

You can read this, nod along, think “Yes, that’s exactly me,” and still find yourself at that same doorway tomorrow.

Because this isn’t a knowledge problem. It’s a nervous system problem.

Your nervous system isn’t persuaded by facts like 84% of consumers have been convinced to buy a product after watching a brand's video. It doesn’t respond well to 30-day content creation challenges. (Can you relate? I definitely could.)

It responds to felt safety.

That’s what was missing from every course, workshop, and accountability group I tried before I found hypnotherapy and coaching. The strategy was there. The emotional foundation wasn’t.

Once I built that foundation, once my nervous system finally learned that being seen wasn’t dangerous, all those years of training clicked into place.

“I have an opportunity to pitch myself for a podcast, and I feel like a fraud. I have client results to share, but it still doesn’t feel like enough.”

Or: “I know I need to reach out to this client and renew our contract, but I feel sick about it.”

Or: “I have a networking event tomorrow, and I’m already dreading it. Ugh…”

This week: The Feels Factor.

The Problem We’re Feeling But Not Articulating

The internet is drowning in content that “technically” says something but makes you feel absolutely nothing. NADA.

It’s not that the writing isn’t informative. It’s that it lacks flavor.

It’s like airplane food. You consume it because it’s there and serves its purpose, but you’re not boasting or posting about it later.

 That’s a problem. The whole point of writing on Substack and/or posting on social media is to expand your visibility. You want people to share it!

 And I’m here to help you navigate that process with more ease.

What Is The Feels Factor?

Robert Frost said it better than I ever could:

“No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise for the writer, no surprise for the reader.”

The Feels Factor is the practice of using sensory language (sight, sound, touch, smell, taste) to pull your reader out of passive consumption and into felt experience.

And here’s where it gets genuinely fascinating. (You’re gonna feel like a smarty pants in just a sec.)

When your reader encounters sensory-rich writing, their brain doesn’t just process the words. Your words actually activate the same sensory and motor regions that fire during a real experience. Read the word “cinnamon,” and your olfactory cortex responds. Read about someone sprinting down the hallway, and your premotor cortex fires.

This is, incidentally, why hypnotherapy works so well. Sensory language doesn’t just describe an experience. It creates one. But that’s a rabbit hole for another day.

Why The Feels Factor Matters

The goal of Conscious Conversion is to move your audience closer to a yes. Not by pushing or forcing, but by creating the conditions where yes feels natural (if it’s right for them).

Sensory language does something no CTA can do on its own: it makes people feel a connection with you and/or your work. And when they feel something, they remember you. And when they remember you, well, that’s real visibility.

Feel → Connect → Remember → Know → Like → Trust → Convert

How To Actually Make Them Feel

The simplest way to start: stop reporting the experience. Instead, describe it.

Compare these two sentences:

❌ “I’m tired.”

✅ “The bags under my eyes feel painfully puffy, and my head feels like a bowling ball sitting atop my strained neck.”

Even though that was the same information, you had completely different experiences reading it. One you skim. One you can associate with and feel.

Here are a few more swaps to get you thinking about your own content:

❌ “This week was overwhelming.”

✅ “This week felt like trying to plug the cracks in a dam about to break.”

❌ “She was nervous.”

✅ “Her stomach flipped. Her whole body started shrinking inward, like she was trying to disappear.”

Here’s a short bank of sensory words. I want you to read them and notice how they make you feel.

• Melt

• Brittle

• Grasp

• Sharp

• Dull

• Hollow

• Tight

• Warm

• Heavy

• Tender

• Raw

• Silky

• Tangled

• Numb

The Feels Factor In The Wild

This week, pay attention to the content that actually stops you. Maybe it’s the podcast you don’t skip. The Substack article you forwarded to a friend. The Note or Instagram Post you like. Chances are, sensory language is doing the work beneath the surface to influence your response.

A few places to look for inspiration:

THE OPENER — Your first sentence shouldn’t announce the article. It should drop the reader somewhere they can smell and touch.

does a really great job of this. I poured over her article, “Why All the Girl Bosses Suddenly Want Chickens.” Notice how she throws us directly into the scene; we can feel, smell, taste, and see her world.

THE EMOTIONAL MICRO STORY (WITH VOICEOVER)— “What If the Visibility Breakthrough You Need Is a Boarding Pass Away?” is the piece I felt a little vulnerable and shaky about sharing. And yet, I’ve never had so many people text me and leave me private messages about how connected they felt to this piece. (As a bonus, I add voiceovers to most of my articles, because hearing someone’s voice and tone brings in another layer of sensory information.)

THE PHOTO FEELS — And…they say an image is worth a thousand words for a reason. You don’t always have to write long articles. Sometimes, all you need is one sensory-rich image with a quick call-out. I like this example by with the simple copy “Feeling reflective.”

Your Turn To Try The Feels Factor

Let’s feel our way through the week.

1. Review your opening sentence on your next Substack post. Ask yourself, “Am I painting a picture or writing a report?” Adjust accordingly. (Note: you don’t have to use this strategy for every single post, but test it!)

2. Tell us a sensory-rich story. Share something real from your own life and put us in the scene with you. For an extra dose of feels, add a voiceover.

3. Post an image in your Notes or Stories this week. Find something in your camera roll that makes you feel something and test it.

Easy peasy!

If you're a coach, service provider, or business owner who's been showing up consistently and still wondering why it's not turning into clients, you're in the right place.

When your audience sees their own struggle reflected in your words, something shifts. They feel understood. They lean in. They begin to feel that you actually get what they’re going through.

But that moment of recognition almost immediately triggers another question in their mind. And it’s the one that most creators completely forget to answer…

The question your audience is always quietly considering…

The second someone recognizes themselves in your content, their brain quietly runs a background check.

And it sounds like this….”Is this person a real expert, or are they just repeating things they learned from someone else’s course or ChatGPT?”

The truth is AI is helpful at times, but it’s also contributed to consumer trust being at an all-time low.

Before someone invests their money, time, or trust in you, they need to feel reassured that you are the right person to guide them.

If your content never gives them that reassurance, they stay warm but hesitant. They never quite move forward.

I call this the Trust Gap.

What’s the Trust Gap?

The Trust Gap is the mark of credibility and authority that cues safety for the buyer. It’s the subtle cognitive distance between:

“I enjoy this person’s content.”

and

“I trust this person enough to pay them.”

When that gap stays open, people may keep consuming your work without ever stepping into your world as clients.

The good news? Closing the Trust Gap doesn’t require overt bragging. It doesn’t require a long list of credentials or a highlight reel that makes you cringe at yourself.

It requires something I call the Humble Flex.

(Let’s talk about something that comes up all the time…)

Why is it so uncomfortable to claim your credibility and authority?

Here’s the thing about many of my clients: they are genuinely experts.

They’ve logged thousands of hours honing their craft. They’ve transformed real people’s lives and businesses.

And yet, the moment they’re asked to talk about their expertise, something inside them freezes up.

Sound familiar?

For many of us, especially those who grew up in environments that valued modesty over self-expression, openly claiming your authority or expertise feels almost sinful.

We were taught to let our work speak for itself. To keep our heads down. To not take up too much space.

In my own family, I heard the phrase…children should be seen and not heard. That kind of early conditioning doesn’t just evaporate when you become an adult. (I wish!)

The conditioning shows up as hesitation. As feeling the “icks” in your stomach. As content that’s researched and well-written but strangely...void of communicating why you are the one to help.

And your modesty costs you, clients.

Here’s what I want to make really clear…as your go-to former publicist turned visibility coach and hypnotherapist.

Talking about your expertise is not arrogance. It’s an actual service. Your audience needs to know you can help them. They need to know that you’ve helped others. When you stay quiet about it, you’re not being humble, you’re just letting them go off to work with a loud-mouthed poser that doesn’t have your credibility.

( You’re essentially letting them burn through money and time when you can actually help them because you’re the real deal. Do you get me?)

So, what is the Humble Flex?

The Humble Flex is the art of signaling authority WITHOUT centering yourself as the hero of the story.

Instead of announcing that you’re the best, you let your results, your reputation, or your recognition do the talking in your copy.

You’re not declaring yourself “the greatest president that ever lived” (oh yes…I went there). You’re simply showing your audience what tends to happen when people work with you.

This small shift makes authority feel natural rather than slick and salesy.

A simple example of a Humble Flex in the wild

Financial educator Vivian Tu does this effortlessly.

She introduces herself on video as “your rich BFF and your favorite Wall Street girly.”

It’s playful and approachable.

But…the Wall Street reference signals to our brains that she has real-world financial expertise without beating us over the head with it. She doesn’t tell you she’s qualified. She just shows you through language that feels entirely like her.

That’s the Humble Flex.

A few other ways to use the Humble Flex

Let your press speak for you.

If your work has been featured in the media, that recognition already carries credibility. When a respected publication or public figure names you as someone worth paying attention to, that becomes a powerful signal to your audience.

Marie Forleo’s website includes the line that Oprah named her a thought leader for the next generation.

Notice what makes that land.

Marie isn’t claiming the title herself. Someone else (Oprah) gave it to her.

But that statement makes her feel instantly trustworthy.

But what if you don’t have press? Don’t worry I’ve got you.

Use the “exact language” your clients use to describe you.

This one is my personal favorite, and often the most overlooked.

Think about the last time someone referred you to a friend. What did they say? What result did they highlight? What problem did they tell that friend you could solve?

Those words are perfect for your humble flex.

You might say something like:

“I’m known as the therapist you call when you’re not sure whether you want to save the marriage or save yourself (and you need someone who won’t judge you either way).”

Or:

“I’ve become the go-to visibility coach for executives who are full of charisma in the boardroom but completely stiff and awkward when it comes to showing up online.”

Or:

“My clients have started calling me the Substack Whisperer because they came in with zero subscribers and leave as a Rising Substack within six weeks.”

Each of these statements signals authority without a trace of arrogance. Each example is grounded in real results. And each one sounds like a real person talking.

Your turn to try on the Humble Flex!

Start with one simple question:

How do your best clients describe what you do?

Go back through your testimonials, your DMs, your emails. Find the moments when someone referred you and said, “You have to talk to this person.”

What problem did they say you solved? What transformation did they name?

Then try experimenting with phrases like:

• “I’m known as…”

• “I’ve become the go-to for…”

• “I’ve been called…”

• “My clients describe me as…”

Write down two or three options. Test multiple variations in notes, a post, a story, your website homepage, or your next email. (Seriously, just test them. Don’t get precious about it. Notice how they resonate and how they feel.)

You’re just going to start to put these things into all of your content and it’s going to continue to snowball. Not only is the Humble Flex going to help you grow your audience, because you’re signaling authority to them, but it’s going to help you also convert more sales.

Who Is The Conscious Conversion Series For?

This series is for service providers, coaches, and business owners who feel like you’re putting yourself out there, but your content still isn’t leading to sales.

 Maybe you are seeing some likes, you’re seeing some traction. You’re even seeing some clicks onto your website. But it’s like crickets when it comes to actually seeing that attention turn into revenue.

I have to tell you as your Visibility Coach that simply showing up is the first part of the equation. Messaging that converts is where visibility starts paying your mortgage.

At some point, your message has to help your ideal client move from “This resonates” to “I’m all in.”

Conscious Conversion, Part 1: Why Pain Converts (And How to Use It Ethically)

Here’s a fun psychological truth: we’ll do more to dodge pain than to chase pleasure. It’s called Prospect Theory, or Loss Aversion. Basically, we’ll spring into action faster to avoid losing $1,000 than to earn an extra $1,000.

The same rule applies to your message. When you highlight the cost of staying stuck…whether that’s emotionally, financially, or energetically…people stop scrolling and start paying attention.

 Now, you’ll want to notice that you’re gonna want to do this, not just once. You’re going to have to layer it into your messaging strategy. So. We’re gonna start here, but I have actually seen even in my own post here on Substack, that it is these types of posts where I see the most subscribers and even paid subscribers.

Here’s How To Use This Conscious Conversion Tool

When you write copy, name the real-life problem your audience is experiencing and describe what it costs them to stay in it. That cost can be emotional, financial, or both.

 And here’s an example from a dog trainer in Texas that I worked with many years ago, and he was sharing with me that he just couldn’t get his ads to convert. He actually had a pretty large audience and people just weren’t buying even though he was posting all the time.

 So I looked at his posts. And they were happy. They were positive, but that wasn’t really hitting the pain. So therefore, it wasn’t hitting that psychological trigger that we need to buy.

Before:

“Train your dog to be obedient. Train Your Dog offers classes in the evenings and weekends to suit your schedule.”

True, but it only speaks to a gain. Our brains don’t register a reason to act.

I developed a full advertising strategy for him, and we started by digging into the specific problems dog owners were dealing with. For some, their dogs weren’t potty trained. For others, the dogs kept digging under the fence and disappearing, or jumping all over guests as soon as they walked in the door.

After:

“Tired of coming home to another mess. Your kids in tears, and your dog has dug a hole under the fence and has gone missing again! Train Your Dog helps you stop the behaviors that steal your peace and post-work time.”

Sales increased almost immediately because people don’t buy obedience. They buy the relief of not having to go search for their dog after they come home exhausted from work.

Your Turn!

Ask yourself, what is the exact moment when your ideal client finally thinks, “I can’t keep living this way”?

I want you to, again, come to this from an ethical place. What’s the problem that you can really solve for your client?

You might have heard about their problem through different consultations you’ve had with your clients, or you know the moments in time when you have been in service with them where  you hear them share these specific pain points and what it’s costing them.

So, let’s say that you’re a stylist and, you help corporate women. And yes, that seems like a nice service (to have a nice wardrobe). But that becomes a critical problem when that person has to actually step up on stage and present at a panel discussion.

And now all eyes are on them, and they’re still wearing old suits and jackets that don’t really fit well and don’t really present them as someone who is a thought leader.

That’s a problem you’d want to address with your service’s messaging.

So, picture that moment clearly. Where are they, what just happened, how do they feel?

I want you to think of this as a scene in a movie. Write it down. Then test it this week in a low-stakes post, note, story, or email.

I was scrolling Substack when I saw her.

Same niche = personal branding + visibility.

Same brand color = vibrant red.

Same pillar in her methodology = human design.

But, she had over 6,000 subscribers on Substack compared to my under-500.

The thoughts that followed were laser-sharp and ruthless: It’s going to look like you’re copying her. She got here first. What’s even the point of putting the time in here on Substack?

Have you ever found someone doing what you do, doing it bigger, and spent the next 24 hours convincing yourself there was no room left for you? (I’m guessing if you’re still reading, the answer is YES!)

When Self-Doubt Disguises Itself as Logic

I’ve come to call these moments Low-Frequency Thought Trains. They are those tight emotional loops that accelerate the moment you give them any attention. They blow their horn with the sound of fake news that feels like real insight. They cloud your judgement with the inky gray smoke of not-enoughness. And they barrel high-speed on the track of comparison.

Here’s what I know now: Low-Frequency Thought Trains stop most people who are trying to build a personal brand or become thought leaders from growing, and they lead us to a deserted, soul-sucking place where dreams go to die, by way of a hundred paper cuts.

What Separates Thought Leaders Who Grow From Those Who Stay Stuck

The thought leaders who grow aren’t the ones who never feel self-doubt. They’re the ones who learn to move through the emotion rather than be rerouted by it. That’s a learnable skill, babe. And it starts with one simple step: name the train before it leaves the station.

Here’s the trick: Write the thought down in its full, unedited, ugly form. Then, interrogate it with two questions:

1. How could this NOT be true?

2. What’s the most generous version of this story?

This exercise is not about trying to silence the thought. You’re just learning to recognize it as a passenger…not the conductor.

Where I Actually Landed

I won’t lie. It took 24 hours to finally get out of my own head, and I actually used The Visibility Companion, the tool I give my private visibility coaching clients.

Here’s what I was able to FINALLY see.

Our brains want to tell us that just because someone has a larger following, there’s no room for the rest of us. But that’s just a Low-Frequency Thought Train. That’s the collective scarcity mindset saying there can only be one winner.

The color red does NOT make a brand. Human Design does NOT make a brand. The niche does NOT make the brand.

I am the brand, my perspective, my lived experience, my humanness. She is her brand. (And hey, maybe we collaborate one day.)

And you, babe?

You are your own brand. And we each have something to contribute if we just keep going.

This is just the start of your visibility journey. The comparison spirals will come. The Low-Frequency Thought Trains will pull into the station. But you don’t have to let them drive.
