It’s that we’re trying to invent something clever instead of noticing something that’s already been handed to us.

Subscribe now

The content you’re overlooking

Somewhere in your inbox right now there is a message with more content potential in it than anything you’d come up with staring at your phone. A DM. A comment. Something a client said on a call. We skip right past these because they don’t feel like “content,” they just feel like conversation.

But that’s exactly what makes them work.

Why someone else’s words hit harder than yours

When a person reads their own words reflected back to them, something shifts. It doesn’t read as marketing. It reads as being understood. You didn’t guess at their pain point. They told you, in their own language, with their own specific numbers and details. That specificity is the whole thing. It’s what makes someone stop mid scroll and think, that’s literally me.

And here’s the part I don’t think gets said enough. If one person told you what they’re struggling with, a lot of other people are struggling with the same thing and just haven’t said it out loud yet. Your content becomes the permission slip.

A DM that says it better than I can explain it

A member of mine sent me this message she’d gotten from a follower:

“I’m 53. My hubby is 61. We owe $170,000 on our mortgage. I have approximately 13,000 in credit card debt. We both make great money, yet I feel like we’re barely keeping our head above water. I’m so over living this way, but I don’t know where to even start.”

She asked me, which words do I actually use here? So I showed her. The hook became:

“If you make good money but still freak out looking at your finances, have thousands in credit card debt, and feel like you’re barely keeping your head above water, welcome to this account.”

Nothing there was invented. It’s her follower’s own words, just reorganized into an invitation. That’s the entire skill. Not writing something new. Noticing something real and rearranging it.

Subscribe now

What this looks like outside of debt content

Wonder if this only works for emotional, high stakes topics? It doesn’t.

A wedding planner’s client said her budget got ignored by three planners before her. That became: “If you’ve called three planners and not one of them asked your budget first, we need to talk.”

A virtual assistant’s client said she was tired of training every new hire from scratch. That became: “If you’re tired of hiring people you still have to train and manage, this is your sign.”

A fitness coach’s client said she always ends up back at square one by month two. That became: “If you’ve done every 30 day program and you’re always back to square one by month two, it’s not you, it’s the program.”

Same move every time. Take the exact phrase. Rearrange it into an invitation.

But what if you don’t get messages like that

You don’t need a long, detailed DM for this to work. A short comment works. A one line review works. The emotion and the specificity are what matter, not the word count.

So here’s what I want you to actually do. Go look at your last 10 DMs or your last 20 comments. Find one sentence with real feeling in it or one specific detail. That’s your next hook. Not something you have to invent. Something you already have.

If you want help turning what you find into an actual post every week, that’s the whole reason Plug and Post exists. You bring the details, I help you build the hook, the caption, and the post around them.

Resources:

The Plug & Post Instagram Content Membership: Instagram content ideas, picked by me (an IG strategist) every week based on what’s working RIGHT NOW... so all you have to do is film and press post! - Join here!

100 IG stories that sell - $17

Say Hi on instagram! @nicoleialeggio

Try Manychat- 1 month free offer HERE

Why the messy accounts are winning right now

The Accounts Building Trust Fastest Aren't the Polished Ones

Nicole | Instagram Made Easy

Why the messy accounts are winning right now

Last week I talked about AI flooding Instagram with content. This week I want to answer the question that raises. If everyone can pump out more content now, what actually makes content good? What makes it feel like a real person is behind it?

I don’t think the answer is “post more casually.” It’s more specific than that.

Subscribe now

What does real human content actually mean?

Right now, the content that performs has a visible personal layer sitting on top of whatever tools helped you make it. Your voice. Your specific experience. Your actual opinion.

Think about the difference between these two lines. “Five tips for better sleep.” Versus, “the 9pm habit that was wrecking my sleep for months and I didn’t even realize it.” The first one could’ve come from anyone. The second one is lived. Nobody else could’ve written it exactly that way.

That’s the shift.

Why does this build trust so fast?

When someone feels like they know you, not just your services, that’s what makes them stick around. That’s what makes them engage. Eventually, that’s what makes them buy.

And that feeling doesn’t come from polish. It comes from the parts that feel a little exposed.

I’ve noticed something. The accounts building trust fastest right now aren’t the ones with the most beautiful feed. They’re the ones people DM and say “I feel like I know you.” It’s never the polished ones. It’s the ones willing to show a little of the mess.

Subscribe now

Two formats I keep coming back to

The first is the highlight reel versus reality carousel. You’ve probably seen it. Slide one says something like “Instagram is a highlight reel, so here’s what I’ve actually been struggling with lately.” Then each slide after that names something specific. Not “things have been hard.” Something real, like losing your biggest client and scrambling to fill the gap.

It works because it says the thing your audience already suspects about social media. That they’re only seeing part of the picture. Then it actually follows through and shows them the rest.

The second is the talking head ramble. No script. No outline. You just talk, for five minutes, for ten, however long it takes to say the thing. Then you find the two minutes in the middle that actually say it best, because the intro is almost always just you warming up, and you cut it down from there.

The pauses stay in. The “let me figure out how to say this” stays in. That’s not a flaw. That’s the whole point.

get your content picked every week

A boundary I want to name clearly

This isn’t permission to overshare constantly. I don’t want your page turning into a diary. I don’t want you performing vulnerability because it gets engagement.

This is about something smaller than that. Closing the gap between the version of you people see online and the version of you actually running the business day to day.

You decide what feels safe. Every time. There’s no requirement to share everything. If a full post feels like too much, put it in stories instead. It disappears in 24 hours, and only the people paying closest attention will even see it.

Where I landed

Try one of these this week. If the ramble scares you, post it as a story first. If the carousel feels more doable, start there.

Either way, resist the urge to clean it up before you hit post. Let it stay a little rough. I think you’ll be surprised who reaches out after.

Resources:

The Plug & Post Instagram Content Membership: Instagram content ideas, picked by me (an IG strategist) every week based on what’s working RIGHT NOW... so all you have to do is film and press post! - Join here!

100 IG stories that sell - $17

Say Hi on instagram! @nicoleialeggio

Try Manychat- 1 month free offer HERE

The AI label panic taught me something I didn’t expect

I usually write these articles a full week ahead of schedule.

Nicole | Instagram Made Easy

I usually write these articles a full week ahead of schedule. Except this time I didn’t, because by Sunday night my DMs were full of screenshots, half-panicked voice notes, and the same question over and over. Why is my content suddenly getting flagged as AI?

So I scrapped what I had planned and recorded this instead.

Subscribe now

Here’s what’s actually happening

Instagram rolled out a new label called “AI info.” It shows up right where your song title or location tag usually lives, cycling through as you scroll.

And look, I’m actually glad this exists. There are creator accounts right now with millions of followers who aren’t real people. I can usually spot them. My dad can’t. Neither can a lot of the people in my life who aren’t glued to this platform every day like I am. That gap scares me a little, if I’m honest. So a system that at least attempts to flag it feels necessary.

But the rollout has been messy

One creator said her entire account got flagged, and the only AI tool she’d touched all week was Canva’s background remover. Canva itself came out and said that shouldn’t trigger anything.

Auto-generated captions might be doing it too.

Is your toothbrush app going to get flagged next? I’m only half joking. That’s how loose this feels right now.

My honest read is that Instagram is over-correcting because the system is brand new. It’ll get smarter. It always does.

The part that actually matters going forward

This week, Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini all started embedding hidden watermarks into their text output.

Copy and paste something straight from one of these tools into your caption, and that watermark rides along with it. Some people are saying it might even show up if you retype the words yourself. That part’s murkier. But here’s my rule, and it hasn’t actually changed:

Use AI for ideas

Use AI for structure

Never copy and paste the final words

Take what it gives you and put it in your own voice. The way you’d text a friend, not the way a caption generator would phrase it. It takes longer. It’s also just better content.

Subscribe now

Does any of this actually hurt you?

No. Meta has said directly that an AI info label does not reduce your reach. Same number of people see it either way. What they do once they see it, whether they engage with something tagged as possibly AI, that part’s on them.

Honestly? I don’t think this stays a big deal for long. Nearly everyone is using AI somewhere in their process now.

A confession about em dashes

Here’s the part that actually got under my skin a little.

I have used em dashes for years. Long before ChatGPT existed. I loved them, copywriters use them constantly, they show up in nearly every book you’ve ever read, because they’re just a clean way to connect two thoughts without starting a whole new sentence.

And I had to stop. Not because I started using them for AI. Because I didn’t want anyone assuming I had.

I have a friend who posts nothing but pictures of her kids with a simple caption underneath. Her stuff gets flagged as AI info constantly. She’s not using AI for anything. AI was trained on human writing, on our captions, on the way we’ve always talked to each other online. So now some of that very human writing is getting mistaken for the thing it was trained on.

There’s something almost funny about that, if it weren’t so frustrating.

Where I landed

If you’re stressed about any of this, here’s the actual, unglamorous fix. Go back to basics. Talk to the camera. Use real photos of yourself. Write in your own words, even if that takes longer.

And if you’re really worried, don’t use AI at all. Then there’s nothing to worry about.

I don’t say that to be dramatic. I say it because I think a lot of us have been so deep in the “how do I use AI correctly” spiral that we forgot the original answer was always just... be a real person, saying real things, on camera.

Turns out that’s about to matter more than ever.

Resources:

The Plug & Post Instagram Content Membership: Instagram content ideas, picked by me (an IG strategist) every week based on what’s working RIGHT NOW... so all you have to do is film and press post! - Join here!

100 IG stories that sell - $17

Say Hi on instagram! @nicoleialeggio

Try Manychat- 1 month free offer HERE

Why Being Specific Is Beating Being Helpful on Instagram Right Now

The list format that's making me rethink "helpful" content

Nicole | Instagram Made Easy

Have you seen these reels lately?

“Five weird things I do to grow my business.” “Odd rules I follow that most people would disagree with.” “Hills I’ll die on as a [blank].”

I’ve been watching this format everywhere for months now. Every niche. Every industry. And I keep coming back to the same question. Why is this working so well, when we’ve had list style content on Instagram for years?

Subscribe now

A client’s reel made me actually stop and study it

One of my clients tried this as a few trial reels. Her hook was “hills I’ll die on as a mom of four and a naturopathic doctor.”

It did so well. Saves, shares, comments, and the thing that mattered most to her, real follows.

So I sat with it for a while. What made this different from the tip lists we’ve all been posting for years?

This isn’t new. It’s just finally honest

I’ll admit it, when I first saw this trend, it brought me right back to old Instagram. “30 ways to grow your business.” “10 ways to grow your business.” We all posted that content. It worked back then too.

But here’s what’s different this time. It’s not a generic list handed to no one in particular. It’s “I” centric. It’s “me” centric. It’s someone’s actual lived opinion, not advice that could’ve been copied from any account in the niche.

That’s the whole shift. Specificity over generic advice.

Why does specificity matter so much right now?

Think about it this way. “Five tips for growing your business” could come from literally anyone. There’s no person behind it. But “hills I’ll die on as a mom of four and a naturopathic doctor,” you can’t copy that onto someone else’s page and have it make sense.

That’s the part AI can’t replicate. Your specific life, your specific opinions, your specific rules.

And there’s something else going on too. Our brains want to know the thing we’re not supposed to know yet. “Weird rules I follow” implies there’s something a little unexpected coming. That curiosity is what earns the tap, the pause, the full watch through.

Subscribe now

A few more examples I keep thinking about

Shaan Tripp did this as a carousel: “weird rules we have in our house that you might disagree with, older kids edition.” She’s even done a part three, which tells her audience this is ongoing. That’s a smart move. It turns a single post into something people come back for.

A few others worth studying:

“Weird rules I have for my hubby as a woman who refuses to live in survival mode”

“Weird rules I’ve made with my kids because I refuse to live in survival mode anymore”

“Weird rules I have for my home because I refuse to live in chaos”

What would yours be? Mine might be “weird rules I have before I make a post on Instagram that most people would disagree with.”

How I’d actually build one of these

First, get specific about who you are. Not “business owner.” For my client, it wasn’t “naturopathic doctor,” it was “mom of four and naturopathic doctor.” That specific combination is what made people lean in.

Second, brainstorm five to seven things that are true for you, but might surprise your audience. Things you’d stand behind even if someone argued with you about it. They don’t need to be dramatic. Sometimes the smallest, oddest rule is the one people remember.

Third, choose the format that already fits you. Talking head, carousel, or simple B-roll. One was simple, almost embarrassingly so. Cold, wet socks on her kid’s feet, a quick explanation, done. The other was one she’d been wanting to make for a while. Four tips, more depth, more of her expertise on display.

The simple one got 839,000 views.

The other one didn’t come close.

“Why did this do so well?” she asked me. And I’ve been sitting with my answer ever since, because I think it says something bigger than just algorithm mechanics.

We think more information equals more value. It doesn’t.

If you know your topic well, it’s tempting to think you owe people everything you know in one sitting. Like holding back a tip is somehow shortchanging your audience.

But have you ever watched something that gave you so much information you couldn’t retain any of it? Did you feel more helped, or did you just feel tired?

I think we go to Instagram the same way we go to a good friend’s text message. We want something light. Something we can actually finish. Something that doesn’t ask much of us before it gives us something back.

Here’s what I keep coming back to.

The reel that worked had one job. One idea, shown exactly as it was described, with one clear next step. Comment a word, get more info.

The reel that didn’t work as well had four jobs. Four ideas, no single next step, everything already handed over inside the 60 seconds. Nothing left to want.

There’s something almost counterintuitive about that. We think giving more will make people want to stick around. Often it does the opposite. It closes the loop instead of opening it.

I think about this in my own content too.

How many times have I sat down to film something and thought, well, I should probably also mention this, and this, and this, just so it’s thorough? And how many of those pieces of content do I actually remember doing well?

Almost none of them.

The ones that stick, the ones people screenshot and send to a friend, are almost always the ones I almost didn’t post because they felt too simple to matter.

Maybe that’s the real lesson here.

Not “post shorter videos.” That’s the surface level takeaway. The deeper one is this: the instinct to overexplain usually comes from a good place. We want to be thorough. We want people to walk away truly understanding something. We don’t want to shortchange anyone.

But thoroughness and clarity aren’t the same thing. And on a platform where someone’s thumb is already halfway to the next scroll, clarity wins every time.

So here’s what I’d try, if I were you.

Think of the one question people ask you over and over. Not the complicated one. The simple one. The one you could answer in your sleep.

Now imagine a friend just called you and asked it. Not a script. Not a caption you labored over. Just you, answering like you would if someone you loved needed the real answer right now.

That’s the content that’s going to move. Not because it’s dumbed down. Because it finally gives someone room to actually receive what you’re saying, instead of trying to keep up with everything you know.

If you want a place where those ideas get built for you every single week, based on what your specific audience is actually asking, that’s what Plug and Post is for. Weekly reels, scripts, and prompts, no starting from a blank page. I’d love to have you inside.

Resources:

The Plug & Post Instagram Content Membership: Instagram content ideas, picked by me (an IG strategist) every week based on what’s working RIGHT NOW... so all you have to do is film and press post! - Join here!

100 IG stories that sell - $17

Say Hi on instagram! @nicoleialeggio

Try Manychat- 1 month free offer HERE

The Social Media Hacks Are Lying to You

instagram should NOT be used this way

Nicole | Instagram Made Easy

I need to talk about something that makes me a little unhinged every time I see it in my feed.

You know the reels I mean. When you’ve been posting consistently and the growth still isn’t coming, a hook that promises “the one thing you’re missing” hits you exactly where you’re already anxious.

Am I missing something everyone else already knows?

That question is doing a lot of work in your brain. And these creators know it. So no, trying one of these tactics doesn’t mean you were gullible. It means you’re human on an app designed to make you feel behind.

Stop Doing These 4 Things

Let’s get specific, because vague warnings don’t help anyone.

Stop looking for the magic setting. Most of what these reels tell you to “turn on” is already on by default. There is no hidden switch.

Stop the follow, unfollow, self-share loop. It works great for the person asking you to do it. It does nothing for you except attract people who unfollow in a few months anyway.

Stop keyword stuffing. It worked on old blogs. It worked on Pinterest. Instagram now reads it as spam and buries it instead of boosting it.

Stop relying on engagement pods. The second one person drops off, your numbers crash, and it’s brutal to recover from.

Do This Instead

Here’s your actual playbook.

Picture one specific person. Your best friend with the problem you solve. A dog trainer friend of mine uses this exact trick, she pictures the friend with the big dog who’s terrified of the park because he pulls on the leash. What does that one person need to hear today? Write for her, not for “the algorithm.”

Ask your audience directly. Was this helpful? Want more like this? People answer direct questions. It’s not complicated, it’s just something we skip because it feels too simple to work.

Tease what’s next. Tell people you’ll be talking more about a topic over the next couple weeks. It builds a reason to come back without ever saying “follow me.”

Let AI help with keywords, not replace your voice. Write your caption the way you’d actually talk. Then hand it to AI and ask it to naturally weave in the words your audience searches for. That’s the difference between keyword stuffing and actual SEO.

Subscribe now

The Real Reframe

You didn’t miss a secret setting. There was never a shortcut hiding from you this whole time. What works now is what has always worked, real content from a real person talking to real people.

That’s slower. I know. But it’s the only version of growth that actually holds up.

Try This This Week

Write your next three posts for that one person. Not for reach. Not for a follower count. For her.

And if the block you’re stuck on isn’t the hacks, it’s just not knowing what to post at all, that’s the exact gap Plug and Post fills. No gimmicks, no chasing follow trains, just content chosen for you every week so you’re never starting from zero.

Resources:

The Plug & Post Instagram Content Membership: Instagram content ideas, picked by me (an IG strategist) every week based on what’s working RIGHT NOW... so all you have to do is film and press post! - Join here!

100 IG stories that sell - $17

Say Hi on instagram! @nicoleialeggio

Try Manychat- 1 month free offer HERE

Real scripts for How to Turn Followers Into Buyers

(Without Feeling Salesy)

Nicole | Instagram Made Easy

Last week I told you the sales gap most of you are feeling isn’t really about your content.

It’s about trust.

And I promised I’d come back this week with something more useful than a concept. If you want the exact plan behind meals like this, that’s what we build together in coaching.”

One sentence of proof.
One sentence of offer.

That’s it.

This is where most people get stuck. They either skip the proof and go straight to selling, or they give the proof and never actually say what’s available.

You need both.

Subscribe now

Different Niche, Same Bones

The dog trainer example still makes me laugh.

A video of a dog absolutely losing it at the mailman. A caption like “your dog is losing it at the mailman again and you’re standing there like we’ve talked about this.” A slider sticker asking how many times a day this happens.

People vote.

She re-shares it the next day. “Most of you said at least twice a day, let’s talk about why.”

Different life entirely.

Same exact shape as the diabetes coach.

Poll, wait, teach, pitch.

The DM Piece Nobody Talks About

This is the part that actually stopped me while I was writing these out.

People think the DM is the moment they have to close something.

It’s not.

Someone reacts to a story, and instead of pitching, you just say, “hey, saw you reacted to that, I actually have a free resource for exactly this, want me to send it?”

No ask.

Just a resource, handed over the way you’d hand something to a friend.

Half the time that’s the entire interaction. And it still builds more trust than a perfectly written caption, because now they’ve actually experienced you helping them for free.

Subscribe now

What This All Comes Down To

None of this is about tricking anyone into buying.

It’s about giving people the words and the path you’ve been assuming they’d figure out on their own.

They won’t.

Not because they’re not paying attention, but because nobody hands people scripts for this. Which tells me something. A lot of you are sitting with the same quiet confusion.

You’re doing the work. The content is good, people are watching it, reading it, listening to it… some of them are even commenting. By every visible measure, it’s working. And yet the sales aren’t coming, or they’ve slowed down in a way that doesn’t make sense given how much effort you’re putting in.

Subscribe now

I think the hardest part of this particular problem is that it doesn’t come with an obvious cause. If your content was bad, you’d at least have somewhere to look. But when the content is genuinely good and the sales still aren’t there, it starts to feel personal in a way that’s hard to shake.

Here’s what I’ve come to believe after seeing this pattern over and over. It’s not a content gap. It’s a trust gap. And those are two very different things to fix.

Content gets you seen. It’s the thing that puts you in front of someone for the first time, or the fifth time, or the fiftieth time. But being seen and being trusted are not the same experience for the person on the other side of the screen. They can watch every reel you post and still not know you well enough to hand you their money. That’s not a flaw in your content. It’s just not what content is built to do on its own.

The place where trust actually gets built is quieter than your feed. It’s in the stories most people treat as an afterthought, the polls, the behind the scenes moments, the voice notes nobody scripts. That’s where someone goes from recognizing your name to actually feeling like they know you. And I think a lot of us skip that step because it feels smaller and less impressive than a polished feed post. But smaller is kind of the point. Trust is rarely built in the big moments. It’s built in the accumulation of small, consistent ones.

Subscribe now

There’s also something honest I have to say about the asking itself. If pitching makes you cringe a little, if it comes out sounding like a script you picked up somewhere else, your audience feels that before they even register what you’re selling. People can tell the difference between being sold to and being talked to. One feels like an ad. The other feels like a conversation with someone who actually knows what they need.

None of this means you have to become someone who’s naturally comfortable selling overnight. It just means the order matters. Build the trust first, in the small quiet places, and the ask that follows won’t feel like a big leap for either of you.

Next week I want to get even more specific and show you what this actually looks like in practice, real examples of sales content that’s worked. But this week, I just wanted to name the thing, because I think a lot of you have been blaming your content for a problem that was never really about the content at all.

Resources:

The Plug & Post Instagram Content Membership: Instagram content ideas, picked by me (an IG strategist) every week based on what’s working RIGHT NOW... so all you have to do is film and press post! - Join here!

100 IG stories that sell - $17

Say Hi on instagram! @nicoleialeggio

Try Manychat- 1 month free offer HERE

The Content Mix I Use When I Don't Have a Single New Idea Left

There’s a particular kind of tired that comes from a good summer.

Nicole | Instagram Made Easy

There’s a particular kind of tired that comes from a good summer. Friends in the guest room, plans stacked on plans, everyone home late and up early. I wouldn’t trade it, but I noticed something this year that I don’t think I’ve said out loud before.

The tiredness doesn’t stop me from having ideas. It stops me from starting.

I sat down after the holiday weekend to open Instagram, genuinely wanting to post, and just froze. Not because I had nothing to say. I had plenty going on in my head. But going from nothing, from days of being fully somewhere else, back into “figure out what to post today” felt like too big a leap to make in one move.

Subscribe now

I think we talk about content block like it’s a creativity problem. Like the ideas ran out. But most weeks, that’s not actually what’s happening. What’s happening is you’re asking yourself to go from zero to fully formed, and that’s a lot to ask of anyone, especially in a season that’s already asking a lot of you.

So this week I want to talk about what I actually do instead, because I think the answer isn’t more inspiration. It’s a system that doesn’t require any.

My mix on the weeks I don’t have it in me: two things I’ve already made, reshaped a little. One new thing, just one, so the pressure stays low. And one video of just me talking, no script, no production, just saying the thing.

What I keep coming back to is how much permission that mix gives me. I’m not asking myself to be original four times a week. I’m asking myself to show up four times, and only one of those times does it need to be something I haven’t done before.

There’s a version of this work that treats repetition like failure. Like if you’ve said it before, it doesn’t count anymore. I don’t believe that’s true, and I don’t think your audience believes it either. Most of them didn’t see the first version. The ones who did probably don’t remember it the way you do.

What they do remember, or at least what they notice, is whether you’re there. Whether you show up the week after the busy week too. That’s the actual thing being built, not a string of perfectly fresh ideas, just the sense that you’re consistent enough to trust.

Subscribe now

So if you’re coming off your own version of this summer, the version where everything is fun and full and a little too much, I don’t think you need a new idea right now. I think you need permission to reuse a good one, and a very small, very doable plan for the four things you’ll post regardless.

That’s genuinely enough. It’s enough for me most weeks, and I promise it’s enough for you too.

And if even that small plan feels like too much some weeks, that’s exactly why I built the AI tool inside Plug and Post. It builds this same kind of weekly mix for you in under a minute, based on your niche and your tone, so on the weeks you truly have nothing left to give it, you don’t have to.

Resources:

The Plug & Post Instagram Content Membership: Instagram content ideas, picked by me (an IG strategist) every week based on what’s working RIGHT NOW... so all you have to do is film and press post! - Join here!

100 IG stories that sell - $17

Say Hi on instagram! @nicoleialeggio

Try Manychat- 1 month free offer HERE

The Silence That Taught Me More Than the Likes Ever Did

Why Some People Grow Fast on Instagram (And Others Don't)

Nicole | Instagram Made Easy

I want to tell you about the loudest silence I’ve ever heard.

It came from a client’s Instagram account. A doctor, six months into working together, 100,000 followers from a viral moment years before Reels existed. On paper, that’s the dream. In practice, every single post she published was costing her followers. Not staying flat. Losing them.

Subscribe now

We sat with that for a while before we figured out why.

It wasn’t a content problem. She was showing up. She was consistent. What was happening was quieter than that, and harder to see from the inside. She was saying the same thing, just with different words each time, and it had started to feel hollow. She’s brilliant, trained for years in language most of us will never fully understand, and she was bringing that same language to an audience who just wanted to feel understood, not educated in clinical terms.

So we did something simple. I got on calls with her ideal clients. I recorded them. I wrote down their exact words, not my interpretation of what they meant, but the actual phrases they reached for when they talked about their problems.

Reading those transcripts back was like watching a fog lift. The words she needed had been sitting there the whole time, in other people’s mouths, waiting for her to use them.

Four months later she’d gained 40,000 followers. Not because she posted more. Because she finally sounded like someone her audience recognized.

Subscribe now

I think about this a lot, especially on the weeks when my own content goes quiet. There’s a specific kind of silence that happens on Instagram, the kind where you post and the numbers just sit there, unmoved. It’s tempting to read that as rejection. I’m not interesting enough. I’m not good at this. Nobody cares what I have to say.

But I’ve started to hear it differently now. That silence is information. It’s not telling you to quit, it’s telling you something needs to shift. Maybe your message hasn’t caught up to who you’ve become. Maybe you became a mom and your time, your priorities, your whole rhythm changed, but your content didn’t change with it. Maybe your business grew into something new while your captions stayed the same.

None of that is a flaw. It’s just a signal that you’re due for an update.

What strikes me most about my client’s story isn’t the follower count. It’s what she said after we finished the second audit, the one we just did recently as her business shifted again. She told me this was the closest she’d ever felt to actually liking how she talks about her own work.

That’s the thing nobody tells you about confidence online. It doesn’t arrive first. You don’t wake up one day feeling sure of yourself and then start posting. It’s the other way around. You test, you listen, you adjust, and the confidence shows up after, almost as a byproduct of finally being understood.

So if you’re in a season where your content feels stale even though you haven’t changed anything about your effort, I don’t think you’re behind. I think you might just be one honest conversation away from hearing what your audience has been trying to tell you all along.

Your Action Challenge

This week, ask three people in your audience one question: What is the biggest thing you’re struggling with right now, and how can I help you?

Write down their answers word for word. Don’t edit anything. Then post one piece of content using their exact language. Just one. Next week, do it again, and start noticing which words actually move people.

A Little Help Putting It All Together

Once you’ve got these real words from your audience, the next question is what do you actually do with them? That’s exactly what the Plug and Post Membership is built for. Every week you get three B-roll Reels, a carousel, a talking head script, and Stories prompts for Monday through Friday, plus a brand new AI tool where you plug in your offer, goals, tone, and even the language you pull from your own audits. It takes all of that and turns it into content that sounds like you. The reach drops a little. The comments slow down. And somewhere in the back of your head, a voice starts asking if maybe you’re doing it wrong. If maybe everyone else figured out something you haven’t. If the slow season is actually just... you.

I want to say something before you spiral too far down that road: you didn’t do anything wrong.

The Instagram summer dip is real, and it happens the same time every year. Between May and September, people check out. Kids are home. Vacations are booked. Schedules fall apart in the best possible way. The people who would normally be scrolling and double tapping are out living their lives, and honestly, that’s a good thing even when it doesn’t feel that way for your analytics.

But 2026 is different, and I want to be honest with you about that.

Subscribe now

This year, engagement was already down across the board before summer even started. Platform wide. Across all kinds of accounts. So what you’re feeling right now isn’t just the seasonal dip. It’s the seasonal dip landing on top of something that was already shifting underneath you. Two things at once. And your brain is pattern-matching all of that to mean something is broken, when actually you’re just navigating a harder season than usual.

What I’ve been thinking about lately is how the metrics we used to rely on don’t quite tell the whole story anymore. Likes feel good but they’re not the main signal. What actually matters to the algorithm right now is whether someone watches your video all the way through. Whether they watch it twice. Whether they send it to a friend. That little paper airplane button that you probably aren’t thinking too hard about is becoming one of the more powerful signals on the platform.

That shifts what you actually need to make. Not just content people tap twice and scroll past. Content people finish. Content someone sends to their best friend because it said exactly what they were thinking at exactly the right moment.

That’s a harder bar. But it’s also a more honest one. It asks you to make something that actually lands, not just something that performs.

And then there’s the question of how much to post. I know a lot of people are sitting with this one right now, wondering whether to push through and keep the full schedule or let themselves slow down a little. Honestly, both answers are right depending on where you are. If you have the capacity and the ideas, volume will always help you learn faster. More posts means more data, more chances for something to click. But if summer has made your life full in ways that make a full posting schedule feel like punishment... let yourself scale back. Two or three intentional posts a week is not falling behind. It’s still showing up.

And right now, consistency still wins even when the volume is lower.

Subscribe now

What I keep coming back to is how underrated stories are during summer specifically. When feed reach gets quieter, the people who are genuinely connected to you are still showing up to your stories. They’re the ones who actually care where you went on vacation, what you’re building in your backyard, what your week looked like. Behind the scenes content, polls, real moments from your actual life. These don’t have to be polished. They don’t need a strategy attached to them. They just need to feel like you.

The connection piece doesn’t stop in the summer. It just moves somewhere with less pressure on it.

And if you need to take a week off... take it. Batch a couple of posts before you leave, schedule one reel, drop a few stories, and then actually go. Rest is not the same as quitting. The people who try to maintain the exact same pace all the way through summer usually hit a wall by late August that takes weeks to climb out of. A real break often means coming back with more to say, a clearer sense of what you want to create, actual excitement instead of obligation, and that comes through in the work in ways you can’t fake.

Your engagement is down. Yes. The platform shifted. Yes. Summer is happening. Yes.

But none of that means something is broken. None of it means you need to rethink everything from scratch or that the slow weeks are a verdict on whether any of this is working.

It just means it’s a harder season. And harder seasons pass.

Keep showing up in whatever way you actually can. Two or three times a week. One good post. A handful of stories. That’s enough to stay in the game.

The slump is real. But it’s not the whole story.

If you never know what to post on stories and want a simple way to stay visible and keep selling this summer, my $17 "100 Stories That Convert" is exactly where to start. You get 100 done-for-you story prompts that sell plus 150 engagement stories on top of that. Different people, different niches, almost identical messages.

They all wanted to know if they needed to start doing talking head reels now.

They’d all seen Jessie Jean. The YAP launch. The $1.2 million. The 300,000 followers she built from scratch in just a few months, mostly just talking to her phone. And they were in their heads about it in the way that I think a lot of us get in our heads when we watch someone do something incredibly well and make it look incredibly easy.

That specific kind of spiral is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.

Subscribe now

It’s not really about the format.

I want to say that clearly, even though it’s kind of the whole point of this week’s episode, because I think it’s something we hear and then immediately forget the next time we watch someone blow up online.

Jessie is genuinely great at what she does. She’s been practicing public speaking for years across multiple businesses. She’s had a lot of reps. She lights up on camera in a way that makes her audience feel seen and validated, and she’s found something that feels genuinely easy for her with a toddler at home and a full life.

Jordan Dooley is genuinely great at what she does too. Carousels work for her because they feel natural and manageable as a mom of multiple kids. She’s found her thing.

They’re winning because they found what felt effortless for them and then kept doing it consistently. The format is almost beside the point.

But when we’re watching from the outside, the format is the most visible thing. So that’s what we fixate on.

I say this as someone who felt it too, just to be clear.

When I see Jessie’s content, there’s a small voice that says maybe I should be doing one talking head reel every single day. I already do two or three a week. But seeing that kind of growth, with that kind of energy... it pulls at something.

And then I remember that I have kids running around my house like total chaos, and trying to film a coherent minute-long reel in that environment is genuinely hard for me. It’s not hard for everyone. It’s hard for me. And when something is hard for me, it shows in the content. The discomfort is visible even when I don’t notice it myself.

That’s the thing nobody really talks about when they share their viral strategy. They share the format. They don’t share the ten years of practice underneath it, or the specific season of life that made it sustainable, or the particular kind of brain that makes it feel easy. They just share the format.

And we absorb the format and wonder why we can’t replicate the results.

Subscribe now

What I keep coming back to is this.

Somewhere right now, someone is watching your content wishing they could do what you do.

Not because you’re perfect at it. Because it feels like you. Because there’s something in the way you explain things, or the way you show up, or the specific kind of clarity you offer that resonates with the exact right people and makes them feel like they found something.

You already have a version of your thing. Most of us just haven’t given it enough time or enough consistency to really see it yet.

The three fixes I walked through in the episode are practical ones: figure out what actually feels easy and fun for you, test new formats for real before you abandon them, and look at your own data instead of someone else’s. But underneath all of it is really just one idea.

Stop looking around so much. Go deeper into what’s already working.

The creators who grow in a way that actually lasts are almost always the ones who made that shift. Not because they stopped paying attention to what was happening around them, but because they got clear enough about their own thing that someone else’s viral moment stopped feeling like a threat and started feeling like just... someone else’s viral moment.

Subscribe now

Your action challenge this week is simple.

Go back through your last 20 posts. Really look at them.

How many of them performed the way you were hoping?

If you’re being honest, probably not many. And if you’re like most of the people I work with, you probably already knew that before you even opened the app. You felt it when you hit post. That quiet hope that this one would be different. The checking. The waiting. The slow realization that it wasn’t.

I’ve been there more times than I’d like to admit. And I want to talk about what’s actually going on when that cycle keeps repeating, because I don’t think it’s what most people assume.

Subscribe now

It’s Not the Algorithm

The story we tell ourselves when content underperforms usually goes something like this: the algorithm is against me, I got unlucky, or maybe I’m just not good at this.

I understand why. It’s a comforting explanation in a strange way, because if the cause is random or external, there’s nothing to actually fix. But it also keeps you stuck, because you never stop to look at what’s really going wrong.

The truth is that underperforming content is almost always telling you something specific. It’s not a sign that you should quit, and it’s not a sign that you’re doing everything wrong. It’s a signal that something specific needs to shift. The question isn’t “what did I do wrong” but “what is this showing me.”

That one reframe makes all the difference in how you move forward.

The First Second

The most common reason content doesn’t perform is also the least glamorous one: the hook didn’t stop anyone’s scroll.

Nobody even got to the part you worked so hard on. They scrolled past in the first second or two, before the tips, before the caption, before the carousel slide you spent a long time getting right. The content never had a chance because the first moment didn’t earn their attention.

This one can be hard to sit with, because it means the problem isn’t the quality of what you made. It’s the door. And most of us spend the majority of our energy on what’s inside the room and almost none on whether the door is actually worth opening.

A weak hook usually looks completely fine from the inside. It describes what the post is about. It sounds clear and professional. But it doesn’t create a reaction. There’s no curiosity, no recognition, no pull. And someone scrolling through hundreds of posts a day needs a reason to stop in the first two seconds or they’re gone.

This is worth slowing down on, not because hooks are more important than good content, but because even the best content is invisible if no one stops to see it.

Writing for Everyone Means Connecting With No One

There’s a version of Instagram content that covers a topic well, shares genuinely useful information, sounds like a real person, and still somehow doesn’t connect. Usually it’s because it was written for everyone.

I see this most with people who are still working out their niche or who feel nervous about being too specific. The thinking makes sense: if I keep it general, more people will relate to it. But what actually happens is that nobody feels like it was really written for them.

Deep resonance comes from specificity. From the feeling of being seen by someone who actually gets your situation. You can’t create that feeling for a hundred different types of people at once. You can only create it for one person, the exact right one, and trust that when you do, others like her will feel it too.

It takes some willingness to narrow the lens. To write for the person you actually want to reach and accept that some people will scroll past because it wasn’t for them. That narrowing feels uncomfortable, like you’re turning people away or limiting yourself. But it’s actually the thing that makes the right people feel found.

The Moment After

Something I think about often is what happens in the moment right after someone finishes your content.

If there’s no clear direction, they scroll. Even if they loved what you said. Even if something genuinely resonated. Without a next step, there’s nowhere for that connection to go and it just dissolves.

It’s like having a really good first conversation with someone and then walking away without exchanging numbers. The connection was real, but there was nothing to hold it together.

Calls to action don’t have to feel pushy or salesy. “Save this for later” is a call to action. “DM me if this is where you’re at” is a call to action. “Follow along if you want more of this” is a call to action. The goal is simply to give people a thread to pull on after the content ends, some small way to say “yes, I want more of this.”

Subscribe now

The Trap of Optimizing for a System

I want to say something about the algorithm that I don’t think gets said enough.

There is a version of being “strategic” on Instagram that actually makes your content worse. You’re doing everything right on the checklist level: posting at the right time, using trending audio, hitting the recommended formats. But the content itself ends up hollow because it was built for a system instead of a person.

People feel that difference. Maybe not consciously, but it shows up in how they engage, or don’t. Content made with genuine care for the reader has a different quality than content made to tick boxes, and that difference shows up in the numbers.

The most effective thing you can do for your reach is to stop optimizing for reach and start optimizing for resonance. When people save your content, share it, and genuinely engage with it, the algorithm responds to that behavior. It rewards what people love.

So the real strategy isn’t about the algorithm at all. It’s about making something that makes one person feel seen, understood, or ready to take action. Start there and the rest tends to follow.

What to Do With This

Reflection is only useful if it leads somewhere, so here’s something concrete.

Go back to your worst-performing post from the last 10. Look at it through four questions. Did the hook stop the scroll? Was it specific enough to feel written for one person? Did it have a clear call to action? Was it made with a real human in mind or with the algorithm in mind?

Write down what you find. Then rewrite that post using what you now know and post it again.

The gap between creators who grow consistently and those who stay stuck usually isn’t a talent gap or a luck gap. It’s a willingness to stay curious about what’s working, to look at what isn’t without shame, and to keep adjusting.

That kind of willingness is worth more than any strategy.

Get your IG content done

Resources:

The Plug & Post Instagram Content Hub: Instagram content ideas, picked by me (an IG strategist) every week based on what’s working RIGHT NOW... so all you have to do is film and press post! - Join here!

100 IG stories that sell - $17

Say Hi on instagram! @nicoleialeggio

Try Manychat- 1 month free offer HERE

The Real Reason Your Instagram Content Is Not Landing

(It Is Not What You Think)

Nicole | Instagram Made Easy

There is a feeling that a lot of Instagram creators know well but rarely talk about.

You post something. You spent real time on it. It looks good, it says something useful, and yet when you look back at it something feels off. Muddy. Like the message is in there somewhere but it is not quite coming through. And you cannot explain why.

That feeling is almost always the same thing. Unclear content. And unclear content is, in my opinion, the most underdiagnosed problem in Instagram strategy. Everyone is talking about hooks and algorithms and posting frequency. Very few people are talking about whether the actual message is landing clearly. Whether a stranger could land on your page and immediately understand who you are, who you help, and whether they are in the right place.

Today I want to talk about the three ways this clarity problem shows up, and what to do about each one.

Subscribe now

Why You Cannot See It From the Inside

Clarity is almost impossible to evaluate in your own content because you are too close to it. You know what you mean. You know who you help. You know the context behind every word you wrote.

Your audience has none of that. They are seeing your content cold, with zero background, usually while half distracted, deciding in about two seconds whether to keep scrolling or stick around. If they cannot immediately feel that your content is for them, they leave. Not because your content is bad. Because it did not signal clearly enough that it was meant for them.

This is why outside perspective is so valuable. Ask someone who is not in your industry to look at your profile and tell you honestly what they think you do and who you help. What feels obvious to you is often not obvious at all to someone seeing it for the first time.

The First Sign: Your Bio and Your Content Tell Different Stories

Imagine someone finds you through a reel about meal planning for busy moms. They click over to your profile. Your bio says you help busy moms with meal planning. But then they scroll your feed and find workout tips, motivational quotes, business mindset content, and one recipe buried somewhere in the last twelve posts.

Now they are confused. Is this a health account? A business account? A lifestyle account? Do you actually post about meal planning or was that reel a one-off?

This mismatch creates friction for every new person who finds you. They cannot tell if they are in the right place, so most of them leave without following.

Your bio is the promise. Your content is where you deliver on that promise. When those two things are not aligned, you are working against yourself every time someone new discovers you. The question to ask is simple: if someone found you from your most recent post, would your bio make complete sense to them?

The Second Sign: Information Without Perspective

This is the one I see most often with service providers, and it is subtle enough that most people do not catch it.

The content is technically correct. The tips are solid. But it reads like it could have been written by anyone. There is no opinion in it. No voice. No “in my experience” or “here is what I have actually seen happen with my clients.” It is accurate but it is also anonymous.

Information without perspective does not build trust the way we think it does. People do not follow accounts because they are impressed by the accuracy of the information. They follow accounts because they feel like they know the person behind it. Because they recognize a voice. Because someone said something in a way that made them think yes, exactly, she gets it.

Here is a test worth doing: cover your name on one of your recent posts. Would anyone who follows you know it was you? If not, there is an opportunity to inject more of yourself into the content. Not more personal details necessarily. More perspective. More “here is what I actually think about this.”

The Third Sign: Writing for Everyone

When you are not totally clear on who you are creating for, you tend to write for everyone by default. And content that tries to reach everyone ends up resonating deeply with almost no one.

It shows up as posts that could apply to any business owner, any mom, any person trying to grow. There is no specific person being spoken to. The words are technically fine but they do not create that feeling of being seen.

The fix is specificity about the problem, not about the person. A lot of people go deep into creating a detailed ideal client avatar with a name and a favorite coffee order and a specific lifestyle. That level of detail can actually make your content too narrow. What creates resonance is being extremely specific about the struggle you are solving for. The more precisely you can name what your person is going through, the more people who share that same struggle will feel like you made the content for them specifically.

Get specific about the problem. The person will recognize herself in it.

Join us inside plug and post!

What Clarity Actually Unlocks

There is a common misconception that getting clearer means getting more polished or more restricted or more boring. The opposite is true.

When you know exactly who you are talking to and you stop trying to appeal to everyone at once, you relax into your actual voice. You develop opinions. You tell real stories from your experience and the experience of people you have helped. You stop performing a version of yourself you think people want to see and start just... being yourself.

That is where the best content comes from. And that is also where the real growth comes from. Not from chasing trends or optimizing posting times or going viral. From becoming the account that the right person lands on and immediately thinks yes, this is exactly what I have been looking for.

That feeling is created by clarity. And it is something you can build, deliberately, starting with your next post.

One Place to Start This Week

Go look at your bio and your last three posts. Ask one question: do they match? Does your content deliver on what your bio is promising?

If there is a disconnect, pick either the bio or the content and start closing the gap. Just that one thing. Everything else builds from there.

-- Nicole

P.S. You know it matters for your business. But the week gets full, the free time disappears, and by Thursday you realize you have posted once since Monday and you are already behind on a plan you barely had to begin with.

I do not think this is a discipline problem. I think it is a logistics problem. Nobody ever sat down and told you what a realistic Instagram week actually looks like, how much time it takes, what to do on which day, what to create in advance versus what to let happen in the moment.

So today that is what I want to do. Walk you through the actual structure I would build if I were starting over from scratch…the one that works in real life, with real schedules and real amounts of time.

The Mindset Shift That Makes This Work

Before I get into the structure, there is one reframe worth sitting with.

Instagram is a revenue-generating task. Not a nice-to-have, not something you do when you have spare time, not a creative outlet that lives outside your actual business. It is a business task … one that directly affects your growth, your visibility, and your sales.

Once you see it that way, it gets a lot easier to actually protect time for it. You would not cancel a client call because you were tired or busy. Treat your content time the same way.

What the Week Actually Looks Like

The structure I use and teach is a mix of batching and in the moment because that is what actually works when you have a real life to live alongside your business.

Sunday or Monday, 20 to 30 minutes: Just planning. Not creating. You are deciding your anchor topic for the week, what you are posting and when, and what the goal is. That is it. Your brain makes these decisions once so it does not have to make them again in the middle of a busy day.

One batch session, 45 to 60 minutes: This is your creation block. You’re writing hooks, captions, talking head scripts, carousel copy. All the writing tasks together because they are similar and they move faster when you are already in that mode. You are not filming yet. You are just making sure everything is ready to execute.

One filming day, 20 to 30 minutes: Pick a day when you feel good and use it to film your talking head reel and batch a bunch of B-roll. Generic lifestyle footage (walking, typing, coffee, whatever fits your brand) that you can pull from all week or even all month. Change your shirt if you want a different look. Nobody notices the hair.

Daily, 10 minutes: Reply to your comments. Respond to your DMs. Engage genuinely with a few people in your community. That is the whole engagement practice. No complicated pre-and-post engagement routines. Just show up for the people who showed up for you.

End of week, 5 minutes: Look at your numbers. Not all of them, just one metric that matters for your current goal. Write it down. That awareness compounds over time into actually knowing what is working.

On Being in the Moment

I want to make sure I say this clearly: batching is not the same as rigidity.

Some of the best content comes from something that happened that day. A client question that sparked an idea. Something you observed that you just had to talk about. A moment in your business or personal life that felt worth sharing.

Leave room for those. Schedule your planned content and then let yourself go off script when something real comes up. That spontaneity is part of what makes an account feel human rather than automated, and people can feel the difference.

What This Solves

The deeper problem that a routine fixes is not time. It is the decision fatigue that comes from approaching content creation as one large, undefined task.

When you do not have a plan, you spend your available time figuring out what to do instead of doing it. You scroll for inspiration. You research hooks. You open a blank doc and close it again. An hour passes and nothing got made.

When you have a structure (even a loose on) you show up knowing what the task is and you just do it. The decisions are already made. The energy that used to go into figuring out the plan now goes into actually creating.

That is the shift. Not more time. Just better use of the time you already have.

One Thing to Do This Week

Put your batch session in your calendar. Not eventually. This week.

Pick the day, pick the time, and treat it like an appointment with your highest paying client because in a real sense, that is exactly what it is.

Everything else in this routine builds from that one block. Start there.

— Nicole

P.S. If you show up to that batch session and still are not sure what to create, that is what Plug & Post is for. It is the kind that sounds like an easy fix. Change these settings. Add keywords here. Engage for exactly this many minutes before you post. These tips travel fast because they give people the feeling that there is a simple lever to pull… one small thing that will unlock everything.

The problem is that the tips that spread the fastest are not always the most accurate. They are just the most shareable. And when the advice does not work, people tend to blame themselves instead of the advice.

So today I want to name three of the most common pieces of Instagram advice I think are genuinely doing more harm than good, and offer a different way of thinking about each one.

On Follower Count

The follower number is the most visible metric on Instagram. It is also one of the least meaningful for small business owners.

I have watched accounts with under a thousand followers generate consistent revenue. I have watched accounts with tens of thousands of followers struggle to make a single sale. The difference is almost never the number, it is whether the right people are in the audience.

Instagram has shifted to a distribution model where your content is not limited to your existing followers. A small, focused account can reach exactly the right people with a single well-crafted post. Which means the energy most people spend worrying about their follower count would be far better spent asking a different question: are the people already following me the people I am trying to reach?

If the answer is yes, you have something valuable. If the answer is no or I am not sure, that is the real thing worth addressing.

On Going Viral

Going viral is not a business strategy. It is a distribution event and what it distributes your content to is a large, mostly random audience.

I worked with a client who was adamant abo ut going viral. We had three reels hit significant numbers…one reached 14 million views. And what followed was a wave of new followers, most of whom had been attracted to broad, general content rather than the specific work she actually does. The reach was real. The audience alignment was mixed.

This is the tradeoff that nobody talks about when they celebrate viral moments. To reach a massive audience you almost always have to speak more broadly. And the broader you speak, the less you are speaking to the specific person who would actually buy from you.

What creates sales over time is not a single large reach event. It is repeated, specific, trust-building contact with the right people. The kind where someone reads your caption and thinks this person understands exactly what I am dealing with. That does not usually come from content designed to go wide. It comes from content designed to go deep with a specific person.

On Volume and “Good Enough” Content

There are two things worth separating here.

The first is the idea that posting more frequently is the primary driver of growth. It is not. Instagram rewards relevance — how well your content resonates with the specific person it reaches — not the volume of what you put out. One thoughtful, specific, genuinely useful post will outperform three rushed ones almost every time. The pace that matters is the one you can sustain while still caring about what you are making.

The second thing is subtler and I think more important. Content can be objectively good — well-written, genuinely helpful, visually clean — and still not work. And the reason is almost always specificity.

Generic content gets generic results. Not because the information is wrong but because it does not make anyone feel like it was made for them.

The content that stops people mid-scroll is the kind that describes their specific situation so accurately that they think wait, is she talking about me? Not “tips for eating healthy” but “if you are a mom trying to keep up with her protein intake this summer without making three separate meals every night.” The first is information. The second is recognition. And recognition is what creates the feeling of being understood — which is what creates trust — which is what creates the decision to buy.

This is what I mean when I talk about specific, person-first content. It is not a tactic. It is a fundamental shift in who you are writing for when you sit down to create.

The Through Line

All three of these myths point to the same misunderstanding about what Instagram is actually for in a small business context.

Instagram is not a broadcast platform. It is not a virality machine. It is a trust-building environment — a place where the right person gets to know you well enough over time to decide they want to work with you or buy from you.

Everything that supports that — specific content, a sustainable pace, an audience of the right people — is worth prioritizing. Everything that distracts from it — follower counts, viral reach, volume for volume’s sake — is worth letting go of.

The shift is not complicated. But it does require being willing to care more about reaching the right person than reaching the most people.

That distinction is where most of the results actually live.

— Nicole

P.S. If you have been reading these and finding them useful but have not yet joined Plug & Post the membership is where I do this work with you every single week. But quietly, over the last couple of years, the way people actually use Instagram has shifted in a direction that most small business owners have not caught up to yet. And the ones who understand it first are going to have a real, meaningful advantage.

Here is what is actually happening.

People Are Searching, Not Just Scrolling

For a long time, Instagram was a platform you posted on and hoped the algorithm would distribute your content to the right people. You had limited control. You threw things out into the feed and crossed your fingers.

That model still exists. But something else is happening alongside it now.

People are opening Instagram and typing things directly into the search bar. Things like “wedding photographer Nashville.” “Health coach for busy moms.” “How to style a small living room.” “Instagram tips for small business.” The same phrases they would type into Google — they are now typing into Instagram.

And Instagram is returning results the same way a search engine would. Based on relevance. Based on keywords. Based on whether your profile and your content signal clearly what you do and who you serve.

There is more. Instagram posts can now appear in Google search results too. Which means the content you are already creating — the reels, the captions, the carousels — has the potential to show up when someone searches for your services on Google. Without a blog. Without paid ads. Without anything beyond the content you are already making, optimized slightly differently.

That is not a small thing. That is a fundamental shift in what Instagram is and what it can do for your business.

What This Means Practically

For most small business owners, especially service providers, this changes the question you should be asking before you create content.

The old question: what do I feel like posting today?

The new question: what is my ideal client actually searching for right now?

Those two questions lead to very different content. And the second one leads to content that not only resonates when people see it — it also gets found by people who were never going to stumble across you by chance.

Keywords need to live in your name field, your bio, your captions, your on-screen text in reels, and the words you speak out loud — because Instagram transcribes your audio even without captions. Every one of those places is an opportunity to signal to Instagram and to Google exactly who you are, what you do, and who you help.

For local businesses and service providers — photographers, designers, therapists, trainers, stylists — adding your city and region to all of those places is one of the simplest and most overlooked moves available right now. Someone searching “newborn photographer Chicago” should be able to find you. If your location appears nowhere on your profile, they cannot.

A Note on Hashtags

Hashtags are not dead. But they are no longer the reach driver they once were — and the hours people used to spend on hashtag research are largely better spent elsewhere now.

If you use them, two or three specific, niche hashtags per post is plenty. Local hashtags especially can still add value when you are trying to attract clients in your area. But a wall of thirty hashtags is not helping anyone anymore. And skipping them entirely on a post? Genuinely fine.

The keyword work happening in your bio and captions will do more for your discoverability than any hashtag strategy ever could right now.

The Longer Game

Here is what I find most interesting about this shift.

Content that is optimized for search has a longer lifespan. A reel posted six months ago with the right keywords can still be surfacing for new people today. It becomes part of a searchable library rather than a post that disappears from feeds within 48 hours.

For small business owners who are already stretched thin and cannot post daily, this is genuinely good news. It means the content you create can work harder and longer when it is built with searchability in mind. Quality over volume. Strategy over output.

Instagram is not Google. It is not going to replace your website or your blog or your SEO strategy if you have one. But it is no longer just a place to post pretty pictures and hope for the best either.

It sits somewhere in between now — a social platform with a search engine underneath it. And the people who build their presence with both of those things in mind are going to be the ones who get found by complete strangers, who show up in Google results, and who build audiences that actually convert.

That is the opportunity sitting inside every caption you write from here on out.

— Nicole

P.S. Inside Plug & Post there is now an AI tool that bakes keywords directly into your captions for you every week. You posted it at the right time. It got some traction…a few saves, some views, maybe a comment or two. And you waited for the DMs to come in. The bookings. The questions. The “hey I need your help.”

And they did not come.

This is one of the most common and honestly most demoralizing experiences for service providers building a business on Instagram. Because you did the work. The content was good. And still, nothing. No conversations. No connection. Just people watching and moving on.

I want to offer a reframe that I think will change the way you look at this.

Subscribe now

The Gap Is Real, and It Is Closeable

There is an actual gap between someone consuming your content and someone reaching out to you. It is not a reflection of how good your content is. It is not Instagram working against you. It is a structural gap — and most people do not even know it exists.

The good news is that once you understand it, you can close it. Deliberately. Starting with your next post.

The gap has three parts.

You Have to Ask

People on Instagram are more passive than ever. Most are not liking, commenting, or engaging in any visible way. They are watching, consuming, and scrolling. This is just how the platform works right now.

Which means that if you are not explicitly inviting someone into your DMs — with a specific ask and a specific reason — most of them are simply not going to go there on their own. Not because they do not want to. Because they were never given a clear next step.

The invitation matters. Every single time.

Value Is Not the Same as Connection

This is the one I want to sit with for a moment.

You can create genuinely useful content — real tips, solid frameworks, actionable advice — and still have an audience that never reaches out. Because there is a difference between content people find valuable and content that makes them feel like they know you.

DMs come from connection. They come from the moment someone reads something you wrote and thinks that is exactly how I feel, or she is describing my exact situation, or I feel like she is talking directly to me.

That moment does not come from information. It comes from personality. From the specific way you tell a story. From the real moments in your business you share without overthinking them. From sounding unmistakably like yourself.

If your content is mostly tips with no personal layer, people will appreciate it and keep scrolling. Adding even one genuine personal element — one real moment, one specific story, one line that only you could have written — starts to close that gap.

Specificity Is the Difference Between a CTA That Works and One That Doesn’t

Even with a strong personal connection and a clear ask, vague CTAs fall flat.

“DM me if you have questions” does not give someone enough to act on. They do not know what questions they have. They are not sure if their question is worth asking. The friction is too high.

“DM me the word [keyword] and I will send you [specific thing that helps with specific problem]” removes all of that friction. It tells them exactly what to do, exactly what they will get, and exactly why it is worth the two seconds it takes to send the message.

The lower the barrier, the more people cross it. And every person who crosses it is now in a conversation with you — which is where trust actually gets built.

Subscribe now

What This Looks Like in Practice

Three small shifts that make a real difference:

Add a DM CTA to your next three posts. Not a comment ask, not a save ask — a DM specifically. Make it keyword-based and attach something concrete to it.

Go through your last ten posts and recent stories and ask honestly: does this sound like me? Would my ideal client feel connected to this person? If most of what you are sharing has no personal layer, that is where to start.

Pick one specific piece of value you can offer in the DMs and build your ask around that. A resource, a tip, a template — something easy and real. Give it freely. Then follow up. That is how passive viewers become people who trust you enough to buy.

The Bigger Picture

Building a business through Instagram is fundamentally a relationship game. The follower count, the views, the saves — those things matter. But the real momentum happens in the conversations. In the DMs where someone says I have been following you for three months and I finally feel ready. In the exchanges where you get to actually help someone before they ever pay you anything.

That is what you are building toward. And it starts with a bridge — a specific, personal, low-friction invitation that says: I am here, I see you, and here is exactly how to reach me.

You get to build that bridge. Starting with your next post.

— Nicole

P.S. If you want your CTAs, captions, and weekly content already mapped out and written for you, that is what the Plug & Post Membership is. You just open it up and post.

Resources:

The Plug and Post membership: Instagram content ideas, picked by me (an IG strategist) every week so all you have to do is film and press post! ** Reels, carousel and story prompts - Join here!

Try Manychat: 1 month free HERE

The Instagram Trap That's Keeping Consistent Creators Stuck

There is a specific kind of frustration that comes from doing everything you are supposed to do and still feeling like nothing is working.

Nicole | Instagram Made Easy

There is a specific kind of frustration that comes from doing everything you are supposed to do and still feeling like nothing is working.

You show up. You post. You stay consistent even when you do not feel like it. And in return, you get silence. Three likes. A handful of views. The quiet, creeping thought that maybe Instagram just does not work anymore — or worse, that maybe it is just not working for you.

I want to offer you a different explanation. Because the problem is almost never effort. The people I see stuck on Instagram are usually the ones working the hardest. The problem is alignment — specifically, the alignment between what you are posting and what the platform needs to understand about you in order to share your content with the right people.

There are three places that alignment tends to break down. And once you see them, they are very easy to fix.

Subscribe now

The Algorithm Needs a Clear Signal

Instagram is not a megaphone. It is a matching system. It takes your content and tries to find the person who will care about it most. But to do that, it needs to understand what your content is about and who it is for.

When an account posts across fifteen different topics with no clear throughline, the system cannot make that match. Not because it is punishing you. Because it genuinely does not have enough information to know where to send your content. So it hedges, and your reach shrinks.

This is why two creators can post the same type of content with very different results. One has taught the algorithm over months of consistent, focused posting exactly who their audience is. The other is still in the phase where the system is learning — and that phase feels a lot like talking to no one.

The fix is simple but requires patience: narrow your topics, stay consistent for at least thirty days, and let the platform learn your account.

Information Is Not Enough Anymore

For years, “valuable content” meant tips. Frameworks. How-tos. The more specific and actionable, the better.

That is still true. But it is no longer sufficient on its own.

What the data is showing right now — and what you can observe just by watching which content actually stops your own scroll — is that information only lands when it is wrapped in feeling. Relief at being understood. Surprise at an unexpected perspective. Recognition of your own experience in someone else’s words. The quiet validation of someone saying the thing you have been thinking but never heard said out loud.

A post can be completely correct and still scroll past without a trace, because it informed without connecting. The goal is not just to teach. It is to make the right person feel seen first, then teach.

Before every piece of content you create, the most useful question you can ask is not “is this valuable?” It is “how does this make someone feel?”

Subscribe now

You Are Probably Reading the Wrong Numbers

Likes are the most visible metric on Instagram. They are also among the least useful for understanding whether your content is actually working.

The metrics that tell you something real are saves, shares, and DMs. These are the actions people take when content genuinely means something to them. When they save something, they are telling you they want to come back to it. When they share it, they are telling you it resonated enough to pass on. These are signals of actual value, not just passive scrolling.

A post with twelve likes and forty-seven saves is a successful post. It just does not look like one from the outside.

If you have been measuring your content by likes and follower count and feeling discouraged, I would encourage you to spend ten minutes in your insights this week looking only at saves and shares. You may find that your content is landing better than you thought — and that the posts you dismissed as failures are actually showing you exactly what to make more of.

What This Really Means

Consistency is not the finish line. It is the starting line. Getting yourself to show up regularly is genuinely hard, and if you have managed it, that matters.

But showing up is the floor, not the ceiling. What moves you forward is showing up with clarity about who you are talking to, content that makes people feel something before it teaches them something, and a willingness to let the data guide you rather than the vanity metrics discourage you.

The gap between posting consistently and seeing results is almost always a strategy gap, not an effort gap. And strategy gaps are fixable.

One Thing to Do This Week

Open your Instagram insights and find your top three posts from the past three months — not by likes, but by saves and shares.

Write them down. Look at what they have in common. That is your content blueprint. Your next post should feel like those three.

That is it. Start there.

Subscribe now

— Nicole

P.S. If you want hooks that are working right now and a full week of content already mapped out for you, that is what the Plug & Post Membership is. You just show up, plug it in, and post.

Resources:

The Plug and Post membership: Instagram content ideas, picked by me (an IG strategist) every week so all you have to do is film and press post! ** Reels, carousel and story prompts - Join here!

• Try Manychat: 1 month free HERE

The Instagram Content Shift Nobody’s Talking About (But Everyone’s Feeling)

Instagram spring trend report 2026

Nicole | Instagram Made Easy

I want to tell you something that I think you already know but maybe haven’t put words to yet.

The way Instagram content works has changed. Not dramatically, not overnight — but enough that if you haven’t adjusted, you’ve probably felt it. The views feel flatter. The engagement feels quieter. You’re doing the things that used to work and they’re just... not working the same way.

It’s not you. It’s not your niche. It’s not that you’re bad at this.

It’s that what makes people stop scrolling has shifted. And once you see it, you genuinely cannot unsee it.

I spend a couple of hours every few months doing what I call a trend report — going through Instagram, watching what keeps showing up, what hooks keep stopping my own scroll, what the viral content is actually doing differently. And the pattern I found this time around is really clear.

So today I want to share what I found. Five content styles that are blowing up right now — and more importantly, why they’re working, so you can actually use them.

Subscribe now

The Through Line (Read This First)

Before I get into the specific trends, I want to tell you what they all have in common. Because this is actually the bigger lesson.

None of the content that’s going viral right now is generic. None of it is polished for the sake of being polished. All of it is specific, human, and emotionally resonant before you even finish reading the hook.

We have hit a point where information alone doesn’t stop the scroll. People have more information than they can use. What they want — what actually makes them pause — is to feel something. To see themselves in your content. To think wait, is she talking about me?

Keep that lens on as you read through these.

1. The “They Were Wrong” Hook

A creator with under 1,000 followers used this hook and got over 72,000 views. The video was just her feet walking while holding a coffee. The text on screen did everything.

“Whoever said buying a home was too complicated was wrong. They just never had the right person walking them through it.”

What this hook does is elegant: it meets your audience at the exact belief that’s keeping them stuck, flips it, and positions you as the solution — all without being the least bit salesy. It doesn’t push. It pulls.

For your business, think about the objection you hear most often. The thing people say when they’re not sure they can do it, afford it, or that it’ll work for them. That objection is your hook.

2. The Unhinged Specific List

“15 slightly unhinged rules I made for myself when I decided I was done living life 70 pounds overweight.”

This is not “5 tips for weight loss.” This is a specific person, at a specific moment, sharing the specific things that came with a decision. And the right person reads that and feels like someone finally made a piece of content just for them.

That’s the goal of every piece of content you create, by the way. Not to reach everyone. To make the right person feel like you made it for them specifically.

For this one, think about a real turning point in your life or business. A decision you made. A moment you hit a wall. List what came out of it. The weirder and more specific the better.

3. The Unexpected Angle

“7 ways to make more money” has been done. But “7 weird ways I expanded my capacity to receive more money”? Now I’m curious.

Same topic. Completely different angle. And that shift in angle is everything.

Another example I found: “15 signs you grew up walking on eggshells and now chaos instantly triggers your mom rage.” People could feel that headline in their body before they even finished reading it.

Take your most common topic. Add one unexpected word — weird, unhinged, embarrassing, accidental, slightly chaotic — and see what happens to the energy of it.

4. The Silly One (Yes, It Counts)

I know this newsletter skews toward strategy. So bear with me for a second.

The “shake your money maker” trend is exactly what it sounds like. You turn around like you’re about to shake your booty and grab your work tool instead. I filmed it with my phone. An interior designer did it with a throw pillow. A bookkeeper did it with a stack of receipts.

It has nothing to do with strategy and everything to do with making someone smile mid-scroll. And that is a legitimate content goal. Likability is currency on Instagram. Fun is a strategy.

Not every piece of content needs to teach something. Sometimes making someone laugh is the whole point — and it works.

5. The “You Were Right, I Apologize” Hook

This is my personal favorite of the batch.

“I wish I would have listened to all of the moms on here sooner who said the vegetable snack plate before dinner was actually magic. You were right. I apologize.”

Camera pointed at her feet walking a tray of veggies to the table. That’s the whole video.

What this does psychologically is beautiful: it validates your audience. It tells the people who’ve been saying the thing that they were right. It makes the people who haven’t tried it curious. And if you add “(it was me, I was the one who said that)” — you’re being self-deprecating and positioning yourself as an expert at the same time.

Think about advice you’ve shared that you wish people would take more seriously. Or advice you yourself resisted and eventually came around on. That tension is your hook.

Subscribe now

What I Actually Want You to Take Away From This

The content that’s working right now is not more polished. It’s more personal.

It’s talking head reels. It’s easy B-roll with text that makes you feel something. It’s a real person sharing a real moment — not a brand performing professionalism.

Even major brands are moving this direction. Because people don’t want to follow companies anymore. They want to follow people. They want your vibe, your personality, your realness.

And the beautiful thing about that? You already have all of those things. You don’t need a ring light upgrade or a video editor. You need to get specific, get personal, and hit record.

One Thing to Do This Week

Pick one of these five formats. Just one.

Spend 20 minutes adapting it to your niche and your voice. Film it before you convince yourself it’s not good enough.

The content that exists will always outperform the content you’re still planning.

And if you make something — send it to me. I want to see it.

— Nicole

P.S. If you want your hooks, captions, and weekly content prompts already done for you, that’s what the Plug & Post Membership is.
