It is a difficult and dangerous matter.”
— Friedrich Nietzsche (Schopenhauer as Educator)

A wise man once said:
“He who wants to get somewhere, must first know where he stands right now.”

I don’t know who or when but I’m sure it happened at some point.

Anyways, because our journey is Frodo-esque as I mentioned in “The Übermensch Rituals” we might as well get going.

Obviously, you can only reinvent what already exists.
But that’s actually where the first catch is - you must get to know yourself better first.

This is, of course, is a lifelong process that depends on the level of your self-awareness and never really ends, but in the context of Self-Reinvention, it serves a more immediate purpose:

→ To give us a solid understanding of our First Nature before we begin designing the Second.

It’s a task that once done opens the door to the much more entertaining, creative and fulfilling part of Self-reinvention.

But let’s take care of our duties first.
<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://nietzscheacademy.substack.com/subscribe?","text":"Subscribe got a pet you can try it with them too, but unless it’s a very well trained dog, they probably won’t help you.

If you’re afraid of looking inside and used to run away from uncomfortable truths, I got some bad news - because that’s exactly what you will have to do as a first step.

The point of analyzing your First Nature is to get at least a rough idea about the qualities you want to get rid of.

This, however, can become a somewhat tricky task because when you start scrutinizing the inner structure of your personality, your ego switches soon into a defensive mode by throwing all kinds of arguments at you.

The dangerous thing about them is that they sound pretty reasonable, as your ego is a master of what we call rationalization (but more on that later in the series).

-> To combat this natural inner urge I suggest you take things rather calmly.

Look at yourself in a detached, cold manner.
Try to be curious rather than judgemental.

Here’s what worked for me:

Instead of asking “What parts of me do I hate?” or “What I don’t want to be like?” or “What in me do I have to kill?” I asked this:

→ “Which of my personal qualities do I Your imagination and solitude are the only necessities.

No people - If you have a really good friend or even mentor that always inspires your mind that’s good, but keep them for separate days. These people can be useful for your Self-Reinvention process but not now.

However, that alone may not be enough. If you’re one of those (ehm us) who has been hashtagged #ADHD first day in elementary school, just people walking around might be enough of a distraction to you. Forest, hills or mountain hikes are of course the best options still.

No music - The same goes for any podcasts, audiobooks or interviews. Music included. If Chopin or Bach give you some supranatural clarity and creativity every time you hit play you might consider it. But if that’s not the case I suggest you choose the silence of the park or deep forest instead.

No pets - well maybe - As a dog lover myself I can imagine one really harsh dilemma.
Reading this article in your head it probably sound like this “Yea fuck people no problem - but what about my furry little friend?! I can’t just let him stay alone, he needs his walk too!”

To which I say - I understand. If there’s nobody else in your household (say you live alone) who could take care of them instead, then there’s probably no way around it. My only advice here would be to either keep them on the leash so that you don’t have to yell “Come here, come back” every two minutes. Or to add one more walk completely alone on Saturday and Sunday when you - hopefully - have more time.

positive and something negative in everything.
Constructive criticism is welcome by every rational philosopher, but excessive cynicism and chronic negativity are a no-go.

Nietzsche knew this.
He admired Arthur Schoppenhauer as his mentor, but eventually parted his way in great degree to Arthur’s overwhelming Friedrich Nietzsche

In the free article, we established the rule:

Every trait comes with its shadow.
Every strength carries a cost.
And mainly - Every choice binds you to its opposite.

Or in other terms:

The Universal Tax Law of Life spares nothing.

Yet knowing this intellectually is one thing.
Living by it — especially in dealings with other people — is something else entirely.

Because here, more than anywhere else, we are not rational observers.

We are biased, hopeful, and sometimes almost completely blinded.
We see what we want to see — whether as a friend, partner, or ally.

To help you avoid the most common and costly mistakes when deciphering someone’s character.

Subscribe now

Step I — Identify the Dominant Trait

Every person presents themselves through a certain force.

A dominant trait.
A psychological center of gravity.

It is the quality that draws you to them.
The thing you notice first when you encounter them.
The reason you are even considering them in the first place.

They are harismatic, disciplined, emotionally intense, carefree, ambitious, nurturing…
Or something along those lines.

This is where most people stop their analysis.
They see the trait — and immediately translate it into value - a positive one.

Charisma becomes “social intelligence.”
Intensity becomes “passion.”
Ambition becomes “drive.”

But this is already the first mistake.

Because what you are seeing is not the trait itself.
You are seeing its most attractive expression.
A controlled and socially acceptable surface.

What you must understand is this:

No character trait is just a positive one.
Each one of them has its evil twin.

Which is exactly what you must search for next.

Step II — Extrapolate the Extreme

Once you have identified the dominant trait, you must do something that feels unnatural:

You must mentally push it beyond its current expression.

Start looking for its edge.
Ask yourself: How would its excess look like?

Think about their dominant trait to the point where it stops being attractive.

Because whether you like it or not the opposite extreme of the dominant trait- the evil twin - lies somewhere in them.

You simply haven’t encountered it yet.
And you’d be better of knowing a thing or two about it before it attacks you.

Examples:

The charismatic person:

At their peak, they light up every room.
At their extreme, they dominate conversations, demand constant attention, and subtly manipulate perception.

The emotionally intense partner:

At their best, they make you feel alive.
At their extreme, they become volatile, unpredictable, and exhausting.
A source of total chaos.

The disciplined, ambitious provider:

At their best, they build, protect, and move forward relentlessly.
At their extreme, they become absent, obsessed with work, and emotionally unavailable.

The “honest” friend:

At their best, they are refreshing and real.
At their extreme, they are tactless, selfish, insensitive, and destructive under the guise of truth.

This step requires a certain amount of Nietzschean coldness.

Because you are deliberately breaking the illusion that attracted you in the first place.

So the point of the second step is:

You are not analyzing who they are on a good day.
You are analyzing what they become when the trait is no longer constrained.
When the social barrier falls.

Extrapolating the extreme may be unconvinient.
But it’s still much better than to encounter it unprepared.
