EARLY: SYTË, Von Stearns

Nita Kaja and Drin Tashi have been making music together since they joined forces in Prishtina, started SYTË from a bedroom using some recording equipment and a whole lot of ideas. Now based in New York, they have produced a collection of songs that can be described as dreamy and bejewelled, yet packing just the right amount of punch. - Baby Intern Ava

LATE: James Ivy

If you’ve been in our office you’ve been hearing the new offering from James Ivy (his first new music in 3 years) on repeat since its release last week. Jimmy celebrates the release with an intimate set of new songs tomorrow night, afterparty to follow for the heads - Eli

In the spring of 2022, I rode on my back of my friend’s Revel scooter to see James Ivy play at Baby’s. I was not yet working at Baby’s, and I felt sort of lost and confused. I remember feeling sweaty, overwhelmed, giddy, a little delirious, and windswept from the scooter ride. The songs were dizzying and playful, bright and electrifying, ultimately enrapturing, especially this one, that made me feel just I was in the right place. Four years have gone by since then, and we’ve all grown and settled into ourselves a little, James’ music included. The new record is so special. If you’re only going to listen to one song make it this one. I have talked about this record a lot since I first heard it and I think I’m not alone in how much it’s affected me. It’s been with me on car rides and bike jaunts and evenings at home and each time I get something new from it. Jimmy’s one of the kindest people you’ll ever meet and his music is warm, rough around the edges, and truly so special. Caroline

I see a lot of shows in this line of work, as you may imagine. Probably 150 per year. Maybe 2 acts per show. Maybe ~300 artists per year, I don’t know! It’s a lot of stuff man. A lot of mediocrity. A lot of greatness. So when I say Jordan Patterson was the most moving performance I saw last year I mean it. To my mind, she is already a star and it needn’t go any further than this. Palpable sincerity, that indelible feeling only certain artists bring to the stage. Ugh. Go to this show if you care about music. Please! - Oscar

I was grabbing links for this band and when I searched their name one of the first news stories that came up was Leonardo DiCaprio and his (probably 24 year old) girlfriend going for an afternoon bike ride. That’s not interesting news but what is interesting news is Afternoon Bike Ride is finally making their way to 101 tomorrow night. Check out the track “Abigail”—mesmerizing airy vocals and crazy drum breaks. Beautiful stuff - Eli

LATE: CLUBSASTA AFTER PARTY

The official afterparty for Clubsasta’s expedition on the high seas. As I write this I see their boat party has actually been postponed. BUT this party has not. So it’s the only party now. We’ll all live to dance another day and that day is friday. - Caroline

LATE: Council on Foreign Relations, Beneviolence, Peace Thru Strength, WGM (DJ)

This band sounds like a controlled demolition in the best way possible. They are loud and strange, sweeping between tension and release but without the element of predictability. They’ll be joined by Benevolence from Memphis, Tennessee, the enigmatic Peace Thru Strength, and a “deejay” set by WGM. - Intern Ava

D.O.T night at the spot, the second of a series (of sorts) after Orchid Salon last week. Album release for CFR, they don’t play live often, and with such a bill: Beneviolence of Patch+ fame, Peace Thru Strength of YHWH Nailgun fame. - Oscar

The Roast of Us is a roast competition by Chloe McGovern and Michael Bevan prioritizing female, queer, and POC comedians — RuPaul’s Drag Race meets Twinks vs. Dolls meets Comedy Central’s Roast Battle. They recently debuted at Red Eye, and this will be the second rendition, coming to 101. - Chloe

Thrilled to have Lottie’s back, after an opening set for Anastasia Coope last year that had the crowd murmuring. You know her dad, but you should know her too. The music is crunchy and sweet and speaks for itself, honestly. Reminds me DEEPLY of Liz Phair / Courtney Love. Sunday Mourners do sound a fair bit like Pavement / Television, but freaked out enough that it’s not too derivative. They just put out their debut record and I really quite enjoy it. Seems like it’s gonna rip - Caroline

Asher’s new single (from her 2nd album this year(!)) is really really good. Reminds me of the Antlers or Dirty Projectors a bit—twee indie rock with an experimental touch. Pop Music Fever Dream are always a treat don’t you forget that - Eli

Oh yes oh yes! Detroit’s Zastava are back again with an always excellent line-up. Friends of the venue Catcher and Amiture on support. Strong night at the spot. - Oscar

Zastava is a band that knows the value of building tension and thrives in doing so. Their rhythms are totally locked-in and their songs are sharp and angular. Pulling from post-punk and no wave influences, Zastava has the kind of presence that’ll pull you closer and closer to the stage until you’re pressed up against those monitors. - Intern Ava

Honest to god dream bill. Zastava is one of my favorite working bands right now, post-punk out of Detroit. I listen to this record at least once a week. God has granted us support from house band Catcher + family Amiture Music. I’ll be coming straight here from the quarterly Knockdown Center avant-pop summit. To miss this would be a sore mistake. - Caroline

Beloved Izzy of 101 brings her solo project to the stage. She just released What I Want, a smattering of warm, loving folky singer-songwriter offerings. This one’s a standout to me, dark and unexpected. Sunday she’s joined by Núria Graham and D.A. Crimson, sure to be a sweet one. - Caroline

A perfect Saturday show. Thank you post punk rockers Cola for this new record, Cost of Living Adjustment, which has kept me company on many bike errands since it’s release. If you’ve spoken to me in the last like ~4 months you know how much I love PARKiNG, young bucks out of Louisville. Forever legends in my book for doubleheading Union Pool and on one night in March for Alex’s going away party before getting in their truck to drive straight thru the night to Chicago. The music is exceptional. This bill is exceptional. I’m going to the one at TV Eye too. See you at one or either or both. - Caroline

EARLY: LIZA AND NIJINKSY 250 BIRTHDAY

I could do this no justice, so here’s the description from Kevin, the director: “My co-director Julia Eicthen and I created this show in October 2024 at a residency program called LA Dance Project. It was a dance theater work that brought together the icons Liza Minnelli (played by Julia) and Vaslav Nijinsky (a famous early 20th century ballet dancer played by my self) for a talk show that featured the guest appearances of Julia and Kevin. Chaos ensues, turning into a Peewee Herman meets Carol Burnett extravaganza. Moving forward, we brought a mini version of our show to New York entitled “Club Liza and Nijinsky” where the four characters still host and get into crazy scenarios, but there are also specialty acts that perform. Acts have included a tapping Carol Channing, a cat stripper doused in milk and an opera singer dressed as Christopher Columbus.”

This pairing makes a lot of sense. Sam Wenc and More Eaze both make music that moves slowly, allowing little textures and melodies to carefully unfold, never stagnant. There’s a warmth to both of their work, and their experimentation maintains a sharp edge. villagerrr is one of my favorite bands doing the countrygaze tapdance and their most recent record Carousel out on Winspear is proof of concept. shower curtain are the darlings, shoegaze sweethearts. wulferr is dreamy folksome tunes born in Philly. Coolest band out of Texas right now (perhaps?). They had a ripper SXSW. My friend Miles manages them and I love Miles. It’s gonna be a party and it’s about to sell out. So what are you waiting for. - Oscar

I love this band, and I’m putting up record numbers for amount of times I have had to miss one of their shows. No exception here, utterly devastated to miss this, and I’ve already gotten an earful from Miles about it. One of the most authentic and hearty groups making trudgey-Americana-dirt-freak-folk-gaze, out of Lubbock Texas. Highly encourage spending 21 minutes with their Indie Hourzz live session. The record they released last year, God’s Gonna Give You a Million Dollars, has continued to keep me company in it’s warmth, especially Ativan. It’s very special music. - Caroline

Shallowater is the kinda band that knows how to keep you hooked. One minute, sweet lullabies are lifting you gently off your feet, and the next, you’ve been blasted to outer space. Through their music, we embark on a journey of existential struggle set in a vast and dusty place where emotional catharsis takes hold. - Ava

C + W are an experimental duo that put out a sort of cultish, memetic record two years ago, and are back releasing again. The latest single, PAN Night, is pop-rock, guitar fed but electro finished, laden with meta commentary about their own careers. I appreciate an artist that can create their own mythology and stick to it. Solid slew of support bands on this one as well for curious minds. - Caroline

Last time I saw Hyd, she was opening for Okay Kaya, and I was mesmerized by her freaky synthpop, lizard water serpent sort of energy. It was right when she put out this one with AG Cook, really era defining moment. She’s carried her own for years and has released some lush singles, I’m excited to see the live show again. - Caroline

Lea probably knows more about guitars than anyone reading this. I ran into her at a show the other day and she told me and my friend about thresher sharks. They’ve got these elegant, drifting back fins that mesmerized us and that’s kind of how I feel when I hear Lea play a show. Her latest EP is laced with glorious string arrangements (I see you Sean Brennan) and haunting melodies. I feel like a thresher rn. - Caroline

He’s always god a cluster of beloved dear darlings around him, something about his music breathes an air of friendship and warmth. I’ll never miss a Peaer show. A Healthy Earth was a really important record to me when I first moved to New York. It still is. - Caroline

Groupie have a single called Swan Song about something called the agave death bloom which turns out is really fascinating stuff. The plant flowers and goes to seed only once in it’s life and then as it’s final act of life, shoots up a gigantic, 30+ ft growth before passing on. I love this stuff. The music is good also I don’t wanna ignore that I just got kind of caught up in the agave thing. I also really love what I’ve been hearing from Adeline these days on #reels - Caroline

Oh fuck yea this bill is hot. Noisey, fuzzy, trudgey shoushoufroufrougaze. Starling have just released this perfect single. Total Wife are doing MBV in a Nashville 2026 way. Crate has been putting in their reps and I can’t get enough, this track has staying power on my playlists. - Caroline

EARLY: Star Moles, Tracey Nelson

Star Moles have popped up out of the ground and onto my field of vision quickly and quietly, not unlike the namesake. This record is multifaceted, sort of freaky psychy jazzy guitar folk. Her open throated warble on Control Freak sends goosebumps across my skin, and the echoing vocal over jumpy, clippy piano jabs on Skip The Party demand your full attention. This song also. Honestly, a fair few fans of Heavy Metal will approach this whole record with ease. Support from Tracey Nelson, whose upcoming record was produced by MJ Lenderman, and singles have been dancing around my headphones this spring. He’s got Lou Reed in his voice. I just think you should be listening to all this music! - Caroline

LATE: Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip)

Get to the damn gig. Can’t think of a more era define record than The Warning. Alexis’s solo music is more subdued than HC, but still has the frontman’s charm, it’s synthy and melodic. - Caroline

Leah (OK Cowgirl) has a piece of heaven in her brain. I remember listening to this song when it came out on the Marshall speakers at my job and feeling optimistic and calm. It still makes me feel that way. I’m realizing now I think she sat me and a friend at a really good brunch spot a few weeks ago. Thanks Leah! Carol is a powerhouse, her 2023 record stays in the rotation. - Caroline

Cece is a a Nashville bred singer-songwriter, a tale as old as time. I saw her play a show several years ago (I think opening for Sedona? I don’t remember entirely) and was impressed by her folksome prowess. Horsepower is the indie-dream-pop project worth watching, essense of Mitski here. - Caroline

NYC alt-rock from Gooseberry that sort of sounds a lot more west coast than it is, reminds me of Weezer (like wow) and the RHCPs. - Caroline

CLUB: Gelli Haha After Party

Gelli’s first NYC shows were at our club, and they were some of the most fun ones we’ve had to date. Her electropop is instantly habit forming, she’s gone straight on and sold out Bowery. Come through for the afters in our basement, bounce all night. - Caroline

EARLY: Hipsy Gap, Loose Buttons, Whiskey Ginger

This is a great bill, booked by the Loose Buttons fellas themselves. Nostalgic rock n roll from Hipsy Gap, this song rocks in a 2000s power-pop, Strokeys kind of way. Loose Buttons just put this one out, breezy surfy indie rock, powerful production. Whiskey Ginger, I see you here, scratchin at the diy alt rock itch from our back yard. - Caroline

LATE: Josh da Costa, Ryley Walker, Motheggs, Drugdealer dj

If the washy guitars and Madchester breakbeats on the Josh Costa (of Drugdealer, CMON + many others) single “Skygirl” is a taste of his upcoming debut album for Stones Throw, we’re in for a treat. Not to mention Ryley Walker + Motheggs opening and the Drugdealer crew swapping DJ duties—gonna be a party fr fr - Eli

I first heard of Josh on Flo’s NTS breakfast show, with this track in particular. It’s music audibly educated in the wake of Smashing Pumpkins, The Doors, and swirled around in a psychy washing machine. Ryley Walker is a prolific figure in fingerstyle guitar playing. Motheggs + a dj set from Drugdealer, an easy yes for a saturday. - Caroline

Operelly’s new ep *FLUTTERS AWAY* is shy and delicate on the surface, tiptoeing around your ears, but quite intricate and detailed upon close inspection. This track is a highlight for me. Support is Rockie Rode, and if you’ve asked me in the last 3 months what I’ve been listening to, chances are I’ve mentioned Rockie. Cate’s music is quite singular to me. She’s long collaborated w Samba Jean-Baptiste and Zack Villere (this song is a treasure), and her debut solo album has affected me deeply. It’s melancholic, feminine, playful, and utterly timeless. It’s in the lineage of Hope Sandoval and Sky Ferreira, with an undeniably americana wide open skies forerunner type feeling. So many highlights, but start here and here. I’ll evangelize her for as long as you’ll hear me. - Caroline

Experimental synth musician, artist, cyborg. The music is shiny and electronic forward, but also quite tender, strung up with violin and heartbreaking and vulnerable lyrics. I’m bought in on this.

Lo-fi synthy indie rock, who released her debut record in the fall. Really excellent bill here all round, quite fond of untitled freak (of Laveda).

LATE: SUNDAY SERVICE Glitter Riot: A Drag Rock Show

April Sunday residency presented by Marisa aka 1800Girlfriend, fashioned after the eponymous AltCitizen column written by Marisa. This Sunday, the final edition, is the Glitter Riot, drag rock show, in collaboration with @mswomanthewoman. Drag performances, live bands, djs, 20 bucks at the door.

CLUB: Body Liars Play

Bonzo is back at Night Club 101 with Body Liars: a play. Bonzo is a record label and party series run by musician Anastasia Coope. Past events have included performances, readings, parties, and theater at Public Records, Earth.net, Trans Pecos, and other 101 events. Body Liars has graced our stage before, amid the Godcaster residency last year. Looking forward to seeing it once more.

CLUB: Ross Barkan Colossus Book Launch

Ross Barkan and The Metropolitan Review celebrate the publication of Barkan’s new novel, Colossus. Barkan is the author of five books, a contributing writer to the NYT Magazine, a columnist for New York Magazine, and the editor-in-chief of The Metropolitan Review. There are only 500 print copies of Colossus in existence, so this is a chance for guests to celebrate and get theirs before they’re gone. “A canny, twisty satire of all-American posturing,” according to Kirkus Reviews.

EARLY: Emily How, Julesy, Simone

Emily How is a rising indie lass from Illinois, making some shoegazey alt rock. I’ve grown fond of Julesy, really fun and easy to love this, has a real Momma / Snail Mail vibe in it.

LATE: Travess, Helenor, Talk Bazaar

Album release celebration for Travess, really special folk music here with flutes and samples and other loveliness woven throughout. Helenor opened for Hudson Freeman at Baby’s earlier this month and blew me away.

TONIGHT 4/16

EARLY: Lala Lala, Mother Soki

This album came out while I was in high school and I remember listening to it while driving my sky blue 2006 Prius. Lala Lala has developed her sound considerably since then, her newest release on Sub Pop is glossy, atmospheric, and melancholic. I particularly like this song, turns out Aaron (Porches) worked on it. Makes sense! Mother Soki is not to be missed either, this is a mega hit.

EARLY: Zoh Amba, Superfan

They made this bill for me. When asked what shows I’ve been looking forward ot, the answer has been this one. Zoh Amba is an avant-garde Appalachian folk/jazz musician, who just signed w Matador. Theirs is real, true musicianship. Fans of Adrienne Lenker’s solo music will surely understand this. Support from one of my favorite live shows to see, Superfan. Tow Truck Jesus is a record I visit often. My friend and I are getting dinner before this, it’s a perfect night.

LATE: Why Do I Live Like This: Roxy Screening Afterparty

After party for Roxy screening of Why Do I Live Like This: 4 shorts and a series, all focused on modern life. Presented by SARA'S and Roxy Cinema. Come one, come all, pretend you were at the screening if you weren’t.

The Braymores are Indie folk from Chicago, if I had a dime! This one’s quite charming. Echo Plum are Jersey stock, whipping up surfy songs that could only come from the shore itself.

LATE: Wince, Gertie, Cohort B

I caught Wince around a year ago on a bill at Trans Pecos and was wowed. They haven’t released anything in a while but god this rips. The live show is noisy as fuck, commanding, and I’l see you there.

CLUB: Truly Co

Longstanding party at tries crossing the bridge and descending the stairs. They’ve been doing it for 10 years, come celebrate with dj sets by @rowanspencer__ + @theo_g_mr_dj, & special guests @veryjordo @oaklandvin @snack_steele.

LATE: SUNDAY SERVICE Music for Minnesota #2

April Sunday residency presented by Marisa aka 1800Girlfriend, fashioned after the eponymous AltCitizen column written by Marisa. This Sunday’s edition is the reprise of Music For Minnesota, a fundraiser for @immigrantdefensenetwork. The lineup includes acoustic performances from dozens of familiar faces, including Dirt Buyer, Big Dumb Baby, Suzy Clue, our beloved Henry (Henry if you’re reading this, can you invite Cat?), Alana Markel, and more. It’s Sunday night, it’s basically summer, live a little.

CLUB: Ragebait Reading

Ragebait Reading returns to Night Club 101 with an amazing lineup - Nick Dove, Grace Robins-Somerville, Edward Gordon, Christian Moro, Lex Mcmenamin, Sophie Hurwitz, and James Factora. Ragebait is a new literary reading series by Kylie Cheung, featuring short stories and satirical essays reflecting on the digital attention economy and satirizing viral confessional essays in women's magazines. Last installment was a blast, and excited to have them back.

MONDAY 4/20

EARLY: Spike Fuck, deartongue

Fucking thrilled about this one, through hurdles and obstacles of colossal proportion we got the Aussie through our doors so help us god. Something of a cultish figure in the spheres that know, hard to genre-ify him. Start here.

The homegrown rocknite, Wesley finally on one of these bills. Easiest $10 bill you’ll ever slip.

CLUB: Domino Reading Series

EARLY: BOYSCOUTMARIE, Smith Taylor, Calder The Destroyer, Avatareden

It’s rock n roll baby. Ripping this from their website: “The psychological effects of engaging with BOYSCOUTMARIE music include hallucinations and an inability to discern fantasy from reality. Ecstasy and psychosis also may occur, particularly if a listener consumes a large dose.” Feel like that paints the picture better than I could.

EARLY: Horse Vision, Heaven Slight

Been wanting this show since my friend Tope sent me this single. The music is a blend of synth elements + acoustic guitar, making a texture so delicate and sweet and sort of joyful. It’s from Stockholm. I love the stuff.

LATE: Guilt inc, Cleo walks through glass

Guilt Inc. and an experimental duo making dark wave synth- pop, they have a song called Fetish for Existence. Cleo is also really cool, electro-pop smudged out and frizzled.

CLUB: Monologues Reading

The opening of Monologues, a new series for readings paired with live musical sets. Writer and editor Brittany Dennison brings together novelist Daniel Poppick and poet Christian Schlegel, accompanied by music from musician Jarrod Annis.
