When I was eleven years old, my mum bought me The Man Who Listens to Horses. I can still feel what that story opened inside me.

Before I had language for learning theory, reinforcement, nervous systems, consent or agency, it offered me one formative possibility:

Perhaps the horse was not something to overpower.

Perhaps the horse was someone to listen to.

For many of us, that book did more than introduce a training method. It challenged what we thought we knew. It suggested that the measure of a horseperson was not how quickly she could make a horse comply, but how closely she observed, how carefully she responded and whether she believed the horse had been communicating all along.

Monty Roberts died on July 31st, 2026 at the age of ninety-one. Shortly before, the Karen Pryor Clicker Training community announced the unexpected death of Alexandra Kurland, a pioneer of equine clicker training. Within days, the horse world lost two figures from distinct schools of learning.

Placing them beside one another may seem strange. Roberts worked primarily through pressure and release. Kurland worked primarily through positive reinforcement (which has its own form of pressure, tension and release but more on that another time).

Roberts became the most recognisable mainstream face of natural horsemanship, though not necessarily its most influential. Kurland spent decades bringing clicker training and reward-based learning into a culture that regarded food reinforcement as unserious, dangerous or incompatible with “real” horsemanship.

They stood in different places, yet each changed what horsepeople were willing to consider. They invited questions that later generations would answer differently.

Their work would be questioned, refined, expanded and, in places, outgrown.

That is what pioneers are supposed to make possible.

The lesson that changed me

Positive reinforcement is, if it is anything, a way of influencing behaviour.

But the first behaviour it changed was mine.

It made me more precise about timing. It sharpened my feel and observation. It taught me to notice the smallest attempt and ask whether I had made the next step clear enough. I learned to break a seemingly simple request into much smaller pieces and ask whether a horse was unwilling, unable, frightened, confused—or simply not yet convinced they were safe to try.

I do not use positive reinforcement solely or exclusively with my horses. It is not my religion, nor a moral identity I need to defend against every other approach.

It is a tool.

But it has been a profound one in the rehabilitation of traumatised horses, particularly those who have learned that novelty predicts fear, pressure or failure. With them, it allows me to make learning smaller, clearer and more inviting. It helps horses rediscover that trying something new does not always end in escalation, pain or confusion.

The clicker is unforgiving in the best possible way. If my timing is poor, the horse tells me. If my criteria jump too quickly, confusion appears. If I fail to recognise the smallest try, the conversation stalls.

A tool intended to change the horse’s behaviour continually changes the human using it.

The research around positive and combined reinforcement is encouraging, but still incomplete. Studies suggest reward-based training can support learning, “voluntary” participation and more positive behavioural responses, while significant questions remain, particularly around ridden work.

Positive reinforcement is not magic. Using food does not automatically create agency, consent or good welfare. It still requires skill, ethical judgement and careful attention to the individual horse. Nor do I believe it is free from tension, pressure or manipulation.

That complexity does not diminish Alexandra Kurland’s contribution.

It makes it more important.

Alexandra did not simply teach people to hand horses treats. She developed a thoughtful body of work around training loops, rein and rope handling, micro-movements and the mechanics of learning. Drawing on animal behaviour, dressage, TTEAM and the work of John Lyons, she helped bring clicker training into wider conversations about animal learning and communication.

She helped make a new question possible.

Two truths about Monty Roberts

Monty Roberts’ legacy also asks us to hold more than one truth at a time.

His autobiography was publicly challenged by family members and others connected to his early life, who disputed parts of the story he told. Roberts rejected those accounts and maintained that the book reflected his lived experience. His signature Join-Up method has also been questioned by horsepeople and researchers who dispute aspects of his interpretation of herd behaviour and point out that sending a flight animal around a round pen remains an application of pressure.

Join-Up is not pressure-free. In learning-theory terms, it is pressure and release: the trainer sends the horse away, watches for selected behaviours and removes the pressure when those behaviours appear. One study found no evidence of negative psychological welfare, yet still classified the method as negative reinforcement.

We do not honour horses by pretending those tensions do not exist.

Another truth sits beside it.

Monty Roberts introduced a simple idea to millions of people: violence was not necessary. He made observation, body language and cooperation part of the public conversation. Through books, films, relentless touring and online education, he gave an alternative to overt force a reach few horse trainers had achieved before him.

The fact that many of us can now identify the pressure within Join-Up is not proof that Monty failed.

It may be proof that the conversation moved.

He helped create a culture capable of asking more difficult questions than the one into which his work first arrived.

A method can be considerably gentler than what came before it and still not be where we want the story to end.

We do not have to choose between gratitude and discernment, or between sainthood and erasure.

The horse world’s moral shift

I believe we may be living through one of the most consequential changes in the human-horse relationship since mechanisation gradually removed horses from the centre of transport, agriculture and warfare.

That earlier transition changed what horses did for us.

This one is changing what we believe we are entitled to ask of them.

Industrial and motorised technology did not replace living horsepower overnight. That transition unfolded over generations as horses gradually disappeared from the centre of transport, agriculture and warfare. Today, equestrianism faces a different kind of pressure as public expectations around welfare, ethics and the place of animals in our lives continue to change.

The question is shifting from:

Can the horse do it?

to:

What does it cost the horse to do it?

We are becoming less satisfied with the appearance of compliance and more interested in how it was created.

Did the horse understand?

Or did it simply stop resisting?

Is the horse regulated, or merely inhibited?

Does the absence of conflict mean the horse feels safe?

Can a technically correct performance still come at an emotional, physical or ethical cost?

This is more than a change in technique.

It is a huge shift in values.

And values change far more slowly than language.

Humans are slow to change when our identities and livelihoods have been built around doing things one way. Training systems become more than methods. They become part of our communities, our careers and our sense of ourselves.

Then questioning the method can feel like questioning the person. Learning something new can feel like admitting we caused harm.

So we defend before we examine.

We polarise before we understand.

We decide who is good and who is bad, who belongs on the ethical side and who should be pushed outside it.

Yet meaningful change rarely happens that way.

Pioneers are bridges, not destinations

A pioneer does not arrive from the future free of the era they lived in.

They are a bridge between worlds.

Their work will inevitably carry some of the assumptions, blind spots and limitations of the world they are trying to leave behind. The next generation walks farther across that bridge, sees more of the landscape and builds from the other side.

To expect every pioneer to embody values that had not yet become culturally or scientifically available is ahistorical. Historical context, however, is not immunity from criticism.

We need both context and accountability.

We can already see this in the highest levels of sport. Becky Moody, whose education has included training with multi-Olympian Carl Hester, has also embraced clicker work. She does not have to reject classical dressage to learn from positive reinforcement, nor does incorporating positive reinforcement erase every pressure cue from her training.

That is evolution.

The future of horsemanship will probably not arrive through one system defeating another. It will come through cross-pollination, with horsepeople becoming less loyal to labels and more responsive to the individual standing in front of them.

It will come when we stop asking which method proves we are morally superior and start asking which response gives this horse the greatest clarity, safety and opportunity to participate.

The horse does not care which training philosophy we follow.

The horse experiences only what we do.

The problem with looking up

The problem is not having teachers. It is needing them to be heroes.

Looking up is a form of displacement.

We take our own discernment and authority and place them in someone else’s hands. We ask another person’s certainty to stand in for our own developing wisdom.

Then we expect that person to remain worthy of everything we have placed upon them.

When the flaw appears—and it always does—reverence can quickly become contempt. We do not simply revise our understanding of the person.

We invert the pedestal.

The person is still not allowed to be human.

Pedestals distort our relationship with knowledge. They make disagreement feel like betrayal and encourage imitation instead of observation. They ask us to protect a teacher rather than stay responsive to what the horse is showing us.

And pedestals are useless to horses.

Putting a trainer on a pedestal will not make horses happier, safer or less confused about what we are asking of them.

Standing on someone’s shoulders is not the same as kneeling at their feet.

We stand on shoulders so we can see farther.

We can say:

This is what you noticed.

This is what you made possible.

This is where I believe you were wrong.

This is what I will carry forward.

This is what I will leave behind.

That is responsible learning.

We should hope to be outgrown

One day, we will be the outdated ones.

The next generation will judge us too.

They will see pressure we could not yet recognise. They will identify pain we rationalised, compromises we defended and practices we called compassionate because they were kinder than what came before.

Some of what we now describe as progressive will seem limited. Some of what we call consent may look tokenistic. Some of what we insist is necessary may disappear as knowledge, technology and imagination continue to grow.

I honestly hope that happens.

If the next generation does not outgrow us, then we will have failed to help them see farther.

Our goal should not be to create methods so perfect they can never be questioned. Our goal should be to create students capable of questioning us intelligently, compassionately and courageously.

To build bridges rather than monuments.

To leave behind work that can be expanded rather than doctrine that must be defended.

The torch we carry

Monty Roberts and Alexandra Kurland do not need us to decide which one was right.

They do not need us to defend every claim, adopt every technique or ignore every limitation.

They ask us to continue the work: to carry forward what reduces fear, question what remains coercive and stay curious about what the horse is experiencing, not simply whether we achieved the desired result.

The torch is not Join-Up.

The torch is not the clicker.

The torch is the responsibility to keep listening.

When I was eleven, my mum placed The Man Who Listens to Horses in my hands. Nearly three decades later, as its author and another remarkable pioneer leaves us, I understand she gave me more than a book about a training method.

She gave me a place in a lineage, one in which each generation is asked to listen more closely than the one before it.

Thank you, Alexandra.

May we honour those who came before us by becoming kinder than they were able to be.

And may we remain humble enough to let the next generation become kinder than us.

Dear poor horse parents,

I see you doing the math.

I see you sitting in the truck before a lesson, checking your bank balance and wondering how many more weeks you can make this work.

I see you looking at the show schedule and choosing the two weekends that might be possible while the family beside you signs up for the entire circuit.

I see the second-hand breeches, the borrowed trailer and the saddle that needs to last another year.

I hear you say, “Maybe next season,” even when you know next season may be no easier.

And I know how easily the horse world can turn an ordinary financial limit into a private sense of failure.

I am not using the word poor as an insult.

I mean it literally.

I am speaking to the parents who cannot simply write another cheque. The parents who stretch, rearrange and sacrifice, then lie awake wondering whether loving horses is becoming a luxury their family can no longer afford.

When their life becomes the benchmark

You watch other children arrive with the new horse, the second horse, the imported pony, the custom saddle and the private lessons. They go south for the winter and show every weekend. When one horse stops working, another appears.

Before you realize it, their life becomes the standard against which you measure your child’s.

What once felt like enough begins to look inadequate. One horse feels like too little. Local shows feel unimportant. Staying at the same height starts to look like falling behind.

Your child may ask why everyone else seems to be moving up while they are still riding the same horse, jumping the same height and wearing the same show coat, chaps, boots and saddle.

And you may begin to wonder whether the horse world sees them at all.

Money changes the odds

Money matters enormously in the horse world.

It buys safer and more suitable horses, more lessons, better veterinary care, reliable equipment, transportation, time away from work and access to influential trainers. When a problem arises, money provides options.

Talent and hard work do not create a level playing field. Some barns will give more attention to the family buying several horses. Some trainers will invest more in the child who brings in more revenue. Parts of this industry may overlook your child because your family cannot afford the price of remaining visible.

That is a failure of the system, not a verdict on your child.

Do not confuse being priced out of one version of the horse world with being unworthy of a life with horses.

The circuit is not the whole horse world

The competitive circuit often presents itself as the whole horse world. It is not. Expensive shows, winter circuits and social-media success reflect opportunity as much as talent, dedication or horsemanship.

Your child’s visibility within that system is not a measure of what they are learning.

Winning is not the same as learning. And having more opportunities does not mean making more of them.

What the scoreboard misses

The horse world keeps two scoreboards. One records the price of the horse, the height of the jump, the number of shows, the ribbons, the followers and the speed of the ascent.

The other is almost invisible.

It records whether a child notices when their horse is not quite himself, stays curious when things go wrong, adjusts the plan instead of blaming the animal and offers the same care on a rainy Tuesday morning as before an important class.

It measures patience, responsibility, feel, resourcefulness and the ability to remain.

Money can support those qualities. It cannot mentor them.

Money didn’t come first

If your child needs proof that the top of the horse world has never belonged exclusively to those with the largest chequebooks, give them names.

Kent Farrington grew up in modest circumstances in Chicago. His mother traded second-hand computers for his first pony, and he learned by watching, catch riding and working in professional barns before building a career producing young horses himself.

Scott Brash grew up on a small Scottish farm and left school at seventeen to ride other people’s horses. The elite owners came after he had made a name for himself.

Nina Mallevaey’s father had what she calls “a normal job.” She never had a groom, or professional trainer, and her parents searched for affordable horses. At twenty-one, she walked up to Eric Lamaze, asked for work and earned the trial that changed her life.

Laura Graves’ father traded a used washer and dryer for two ponies and rebuilt a free barn at home. Verdades was the difficult young horse her family could afford. While training as a hairstylist, she developed him herself, and they reached Olympic medals and the top of the world rankings.

Six-time Olympian Mary King began with an elderly cast-off pony and funded her early eventing career by cleaning, gardening, cooking and delivering meat for the local butcher.

The Western world carries these stories, too.

Eight-time world champion Fred Whitfield grew up in severe poverty in Texas. A family his mother cleaned for, gave him access to horses, then helped with a truck, trailer and entry fees.

Charmayne James made her champions. She bought Scamper, a feedyard gelding who had never seen a barrel, for $1,200 saved from her own winnings. Together, they won ten consecutive world championships. Years later, she won an eleventh with a $2,000 livestock-auction horse.

Buck Brannaman one of the most influential horsemen in the Western tradition, survived abuse and foster care. His understanding of fear shaped the patience he brought to frightened horses. His authority came from listening, not purchasing power.

These are not bootstrap fairy tales.

Skill came first

Every one of these riders needed help: mentors, employers, owners, sponsors, borrowed horses and people willing to open a gate. Money entered many of their stories later because it is required at the highest level.

Poverty does not guarantee great horsemanship. It can shut talented riders out before anyone discovers what they might have become.

But money did not arrive first.

Skill did.

Their first currency was usefulness: the ability to ride, work, learn, notice and make a horse better. A small bank account does not disqualify your child from becoming wise. Their horsemanship may have to become more than a quality added after success.

It may become the reason opportunity finds them.

What one horse can teach

Your child may have one horse, or no horse at all. The horse they have may be older, greener, less fashionable or less suited to the job than the one they would choose from a catalogue of unlimited possibilities.

But knowing one horse deeply offers an education that changing horses cannot. A child learns the tiny details of another being: what changes from day to day, what helps and how to work with the reality in front of them.

This is not a reason to keep a child on an unsafe or deeply unsuitable horse. There is a difference between being trapped in the wrong partnership and being invited to learn from an imperfect one.

The horse your family can afford may ask your child to become more observant, adaptable and creative.

The horse who cannot carry them directly to the result may teach them how to travel.

Do not make riding a debt

Please do not make your child carry the full emotional weight of what their riding costs.

They already know.

They hear the conversations, feel the hesitation before another lesson and notice what other families have. They may already feel guilty for loving something so expensive.

Be honest about the budget. Say no when you need to, and make the boundaries clear.

I speak from experience when I say: do not turn every ride into a debt your child must repay with achievement. A lesson does not need visible improvement, and a show does not need a ribbon, to justify the cost.

If your child eventually chooses a different life with horses than the one you imagined, do not make them feel they have let you down.

Your support is a gift. It should never become a debt their nervous system spends a lifetime repaying.

What you can give instead

Give your child permission to stop trying to keep up.

Tell them the truth: “That family has a different budget. Their path is not our path.” Say it without shame or bitterness, until they understand that another rider’s abundance says nothing about their own worth.

Help them find the parts of the horse world that still value teachability, reliability, kindness and effort. Look for a trainer who sees your child, rather than a sales opportunity or commission, and a barn where the least expensive horse receives the same care as the most valuable one.

Explore leases, shares, Pony Club, 4-H, local shows, clinic auditing, online education and carefully structured working-student positions. I know young professionals who have treated my learning platform like a university, studying late into the night before getting up at 5 a.m. to teach.

Unlimited money is not the only way to give a child an education.

When belonging has a price

Creativity can open doors, but do not let the industry exploit your child’s hunger through endless unpaid labour with little education, safety or respect in return.

Resourcefulness is a strength. Exploitation is not an opportunity.

If a barn makes your child ashamed of their horse (or their lack of horse), clothes, budget or goals, they may not need to work harder to belong there. They may need your permission to leave.

There are many ways to build a horse life. Your child does not need a professional career, a national ranking or multiple horses for their years with horses to matter.

Scarcity can bring exhaustion, exclusion and heartbreak. But moving slowly is not falling behind, and doing less is not learning less.

What the horse sees

A child who has had fewer horses, fewer shows and fewer public opportunities may still have spent those years developing what the scoreboard cannot see.

The horse does not know what the saddle cost or which circuit your child attended. The horse does not know whether the trailer was borrowed or the breeches were new.

The horse knows who arrives.

Who pays attention.

Who listens.

Who becomes more trustworthy over time.

Your child may be overlooked by parts of the industry. They are not invisible to the horse.

When you feel discouraged, remember what you are protecting. Not a résumé, a ranking or the appearance of keeping up.

You are protecting a relationship that may shape your child’s entire life. You are protecting their right to learn without believing wealth is proof of worth.

And you are protecting the small flame that made them love horses before they knew horses came with price tags.

The worth no budget decides

Dear poor horse parent, you are not failing because you cannot pay to move your child ahead faster.

Your child is no less talented because the horse they have is older or less able, or because they do not have one at all. They are no less committed because they show locally, rarely or not at all. Fewer opportunities do not make them less worthy.

Do not apologize for the honest limits of your family’s life. Do not let comparison turn what you can give into proof of what you cannot.

You may not be able to give your child every horse they want. You can still help them become the kind of human every horse deserves.

Let the horse world underestimate them, if it must.

Do not teach them to underestimate themselves.

Dear rich horse parents,

I am not using the word rich as an insult.

I mean it literally.

I am speaking to the parents who can write the cheque—for the pony, the junior hunter, the European tour, the winter circuit, the next trainer, the next division and the next dream. The parents with the means to support nearly any version of their child’s ambition, and who understandably want to give them every chance to succeed.

There are a fair few of you and over the years I’ve heard a concerning pattern become more common, more endemic in our industry, as the horse world continues to become more financially-focused and transaction-oriented.

Money can be an extraordinary gift in the horse world. It can buy safe horses, excellent care, good instruction, valuable opportunities and the time required to learn. It can create the conditions for horsemanship to grow.

But access has a shadow.

What access can prevent

The very thing that gives your child access can also insulate them from the education horses are capable of giving.

A wealthy family entering the horse industry soon learns a dangerous lesson: if they ask for an outcome and are willing to pay for it, someone will usually find a way to provide it.

Move up a division? We can find the horse.

Go to indoors this year? We can make a plan.

Jump the bigger track? We can put more professional rides on the horse.

Win more? Buy more.

In most industries, money is exchanged for a result. You pay for what you want, and the provider delivers. But if the horse world operates that way, horsemanship will inevitably be sacrificed.

A trainer is not a concierge, a horse is not a product, and riding is not a transaction. It is an apprenticeship with a living animal who does not care how much money you have.

Money can buy the horse, the trainer and the opportunity. It cannot buy feel, timing or judgment. Those are earned through years of showing up and doing the ordinary work well.

When honesty becomes a financial risk

The horse feels the difference.

A parent asks for an outcome. The trainer knows the child is not ready, the horse is not ready, or the combination needs another six months at its current level.

They can say so and risk losing the client.

Or they can find a way to produce the requested result.

That may mean finding a more experienced horse or having a professional prepare it so thoroughly that most of the decisions have been made before the child gets on. Every variable is managed until the result resembles success.

This is rarely malicious. It is economic. Trainers have businesses, staff and families to support. Telling a major client “not yet” may mean watching them move down the road to someone more willing to say yes.

In parts of the horse world, pleasing the client is rewarded while honesty carries a cost.

The family learns that money can remove the obstacle. The trainer learns that holding a boundary may cost them the client. The child learns that discomfort means changing the horse, the trainer or the plan.

And the horse pays the difference.

When the horse becomes the problem

Parental accountability begins with a harder question: not Can we pay for this? but Is our child ready for it? Before replacing the horse, consider what the horse may be revealing. Before treating not yet as poor service, consider that it may be the most valuable professional opinion you receive all year.

Without that pause, horses can become cannon fodder for family ambition.

When the result does not arrive quickly enough, the horse is blamed for exposing a gap in the rider’s education. He is too careful. Not careful enough. Too strong. Too sensitive. Too slow. Too complicated. He does not win enough or make the child feel confident enough.

So he is sold.

The next horse arrives with the same impossible assignment: produce an outcome the rider has not yet developed the capacity to create.

This is horse recycling.

Selling a horse is not always a failure. Children grow, partnerships stop working, and horses may need another job, environment or rider. Responsible rehoming has its place.

But replacing the horse every time the rider reaches the edge of their education is another matter.

A new horse may hide the problem for a while. It cannot solve it.

The wrong kind of confidence

Confidence is also deeply misunderstood here.

Overfacing a child does not build confidence. It teaches them to override their fear, surrender their judgment and rely on highly managed conditions to feel capable.

A child knows when they are being packed around.

They may not have the language for it. They may be winning and look confident in photographs. But somewhere inside, they know the difference between making the decision and having it made for them. They know whether they can create the ride or merely occupy it.

They carry that knowledge into the person they become.

That gap produces a kind of confidence that depends on the horse, the programme, the professional preparation and the result.

Real confidence comes from competence.

It grows when a rider can feel trouble developing, make an adjustment without panicking and help the horse recover. It also grows through the ordinary Tuesdays in February, with no cameras and no ribbon waiting at the end.

Skill produces confidence. Repeatedly placing a rider in situations beyond their skill produces dependence.

The trainer willing to say no

The best thing a wealthy parent can do is find the horseman or horsewoman willing to interrupt the family’s vision.

Find the person who will say:

Not yet.

She needs another year.

He needs to ride the horse he has.

The horse is not the problem.

We are moving down, not up.

You may need more education, not another horse.

Then trust them when they say no.

That kind of teaching can feel like a step backward, even at the highest levels.

High performance riders Wilton and Lucas Porter were already competing at Grand Prix show jumping level when they began working with Jeroen Dubbeldam. Wilton later described taking “three steps back” to learn how to manage and prepare his own horses. Both brothers wanted to be known as horsemen, not simply successful competitors.

Elite athlete Adrienne Sternlicht described a similar lesson under Olympian McLain Ward. After a difficult Nations Cup, he told her he would stop “holding my hand.” The aim was a rider who could make sound decisions without a mentor at the in-gate.

Trust, however, is not the same as surrendering your parental judgment. The horse world has seen too much abuse, secrecy and misuse of authority to justify blind faith.

Ask questions. Expect a clear plan. Watch how the barn operates when no one important is watching.

Once you trust someone’s ethics and judgment, let them teach.

What money should make possible

If every answer must ultimately bend to the wishes of the person writing the cheque, you have not hired a mentor. You have hired a service provider.

Those are far from the same thing.

If you are fortunate enough to have significant resources, use them to make patience possible rather than to bypass the education.

Pay for a slower return from injury. Let your child remain in the smaller division until the work becomes easy. Fund lessons on different horses, education in horse care and the invisible labour outside the ring. Keep a good older horse safe after he has finished teaching your child.

Compensate excellent professionals for their judgment, not their compliance.

Pay for the long road.

The education money cannot buy

You can pay for exceptional horses, teachers and opportunities. You can protect the years required to turn knowledge into judgment. But you cannot compress them.

Do not bring your child to the horse world to collect accomplishments. There are easier ways to build a résumé.

Bring them here if you want them to become someone.

Bring them here to learn that hard work offers no guarantees, disappointment is part of the education, and the work nobody sees may teach them more than anything rewarded by a crowd.

Bring them here to learn that power is not the same as control, that mastery cannot be purchased, and that another living being is never obligated to fulfil their ambitions.

Bring them, too, for the unspoken education: the minute change in a horse’s body, the question inside a hesitation, the trust that must be earned. Some parts of the horse-human relationship remain beyond measurement. They still ask us to pay attention.

A horse’s greatest gift may not be helping your child become a great rider.

It may be helping your child become a great human.

The cheque should never be in charge

Dear rich horse parent, your money is not the problem. The problem begins when it starts determining what happens next.

Money can rush the process, erase disappointment, replace the horse or find someone willing to say yes. It can also give a child time to learn and stay with the horse who still has more to teach them.

The greatest gift you can give your child is not the best horse money can buy. It is an environment where no one pretends the rider is further along than they are.

Let the trainer say no. Let the child take longer. Let the horse be more than an instrument or vessel for your child’s ambitions.

Let your child become someone before you help them look like someone.

Write the cheque, if you can.

But never let the cheque write the lesson.

After publishing The Horse World Is More Woo Woo Than You Think, one question kept coming up:

How do I work with an animal communicator responsibly?

Horse people have always relied on forms of knowing that are difficult to measure. We call it feel, intuition, gut instinct, energy. Different words for experiences many riders recognize, even if we explain them differently.

Some people take that one step further and work with animal communicators: people who say they receive thoughts, emotions, images, or sensations from animals. That may sound unusual to some readers. It is also far more common in the horse world than many realize, including among highly experienced riders and professionals.

Like any profession, animal communicators vary widely in skill, ethics, and experience. So the more interesting question isn’t whether animal communication is possible.

It’s how to approach it with the horse’s best interests at heart.

The horse deserves more than our belief.

The horse deserves our maturity.

This guide is for anyone curious about working with an animal communicator who wants to do it in a way that is grounded, thoughtful, and centered on the horse. It draws in part from my work with animal communicator Ditte Young, alongside my own experience as a horsewoman, interviewer, and researcher.

First: what animal communication is — and what it is not

At its best, animal communication is another form of listening.

It is not a diagnosis, a replacement for horsemanship, or a way to make the horse tell us what we want to hear. It is one possible source of information within a much larger circle of care.

A horse is always communicating. Through their body, expression, behaviour, appetite, willingness, and the small changes we learn to notice over time.

Every good horse person is listening. So is the vet. The groom. The farrier. The bodyworker. The trainer.

An animal communicator may be listening through a different channel. That does not make the other channels less important.

In fact, the more subtle the work becomes, the more grounded the human has to be. The goal is not to replace observation or expertise, but to let every piece of information lead us back to the horse.

When not to use an animal communicator

Animal communication should never be the first or only response to a medical emergency, sudden lameness, neurological symptoms, dangerous behaviour, or any situation that requires urgent veterinary or professional care. The same applies to medication decisions, legal or ownership disputes, and situations where you don’t have the horse owner’s consent.

Start with the appropriate professional.

Animal communication may have a place in the conversation later, but it should never delay the care or expertise the horse needs.

Why people work with animal communicators

People often reach out to an animal communicator when they can't quite make sense of what's happening with their horse.

A horse's behaviour may have changed. They may be struggling in their work for reasons that aren't immediately clear. An important decision may be approaching—a move, retirement, or saying goodbye. Or perhaps the owner wants to understand their horse better.

Those are all valid reasons to be curious.

But intention matters.

Before booking a session, ask yourself:

Am I looking for information, or am I looking for confirmation?

There is a difference.

If you’re looking for someone to validate what you already believe, you’re no longer really listening. If you only want your horse to say, “Yes, I love this job. Yes, I’m happy. Yes, keep going,” you may not be ready to hear the horse.

The real test of animal communication isn’t whether you’re willing to ask the question.

It’s whether you’re willing to hold the answer responsibly, especially when it’s inconvenient.

Green flags when choosing an animal communicator

1. They ask for very little information

This is one of the clearest signs of a professional approach.

A communicator may ask for your animal’s name, species, a little practical context, and who their primary owner or rider is. But they should not need the entire backstory before they begin.

Practical context has its place, but if someone needs a detailed explanation of the problem before they can offer anything meaningful, I’d notice that.

The more information you provide upfront, the harder it becomes to know what is genuinely being received and what may be influenced by what you've shared.

2. They explain how the session works

A good communicator should be able to tell you what to expect.

Do they work live or remotely? Do they need a photo? Will you receive notes or a recording? Can you ask questions? How do they handle medical, behavioural, or emotionally difficult topics?

The work may be intuitive, but the process should not be chaotic.

A trustworthy communicator helps you get informed before the session begins.

3. They provide specific, meaningful information

A professional session should offer more than generic statements.

“Your horse loves you.”
“Your horse likes turnout.”
“Your dog is loyal.”

These things may be true, but on their own they don’t tell you much.

A strong session usually includes details that are specific to the individual animal, their experience, or your relationship with them. It might be a change in routine, a sensation on one side of the body, a dislike of a particular part of the day, a preference for one handler, or a message that helps you see your horse differently.

Specific doesn’t have to be sensational.

The point isn’t drama.

It's recognition—the feeling that you can understand your horse in a way you couldn't before.

4. They are willing to share difficult truths

An ethical communicator won’t simply tell you what you want to hear.

The horse may communicate a difficult truth. They may feel tired, uncomfortable in their body, stressed by a person or environment, or no longer suited to the life their human has planned.

A good communicator shares those messages with care. They don’t sensationalize them, shame the owner, create panic, or turn the horse’s message into a weapon.

But they also don’t soften everything into comfort.

If we're going to ask the horse, we have to be willing to hear a difficult answer.

5. They respect consent

This is a major ethical point.

They should never tune into someone else’s animal without permission. If someone asks them to read another rider’s horse, a client’s horse, a neighbour’s dog, or an ex-partner’s animal, they should decline.

This isn’t just about the animal. It’s about respecting human boundaries, too.

Animal communication should never become a way to spy, interfere, or gather information about someone else’s life through their animal.

Consent, privacy, and respect are part of the work.

6. They respect professional boundaries

A responsible animal communicator knows where their expertise begins and ends.

They should never diagnose illness, prescribe treatment, tell you to stop veterinary care, or replace your vet, farrier, trainer, bodyworker, behaviourist, or other qualified professional. Nor should they claim to “fix” your horse.

If they sense physical discomfort, they can share that impression. The next step should be to consult the appropriate professional.

For example:

“I’m getting discomfort around the stomach area. I’d suggest speaking to your vet.”

That is very different from:

“Your horse has ulcers. Stop doing this and give this supplement.”

The first respects the boundary.

The second crosses it.

7. They are respected by other serious animal people

Testimonials matter. But even more important is who trusts them.

Do veterinarians, trainers, breeders, riders, bodyworkers, behaviourists, or experienced horse people recommend them? Have people you respect had positive experiences with them?

This isn’t a guarantee, but it is a useful signal.

Animal communication is like any profession. Some people have years of experience. Others are still learning. And some lack the ethics this work requires.

Reputation matters more than fame.

8. They do not make you dependent on them

This is a big one for me.

A good animal communicator should help you become more connected to your animal, not less.

They shouldn’t position themselves as the only person who can understand your horse, make you doubt your own ability to listen, or create fear around making decisions without them.

Their role is to support the relationship between horse and human, not become the voice standing between them.

The thread running through all of these

Looking back, I think all of these green flags point to the same quality:

Humility.

The best animal communicators I’ve encountered don’t need to prove they’re gifted. They don’t need to dominate the room, make the horse’s message dramatic, or make the human feel small.

They approach the horse with respect. They approach the human with care.

They understand that intuitive information is delicate. They know they’re part of a larger circle of care, not the whole circle.

The best communicators aren’t trying to impress you.

They’re trying to listen.

Using discernment

Most red flags are simply the absence of the qualities we’ve already discussed.

Looking back, I think they all point to the same thing:

Certainty without responsibility.

If someone ignores consent, makes guarantees, works outside their expertise, positions themselves as the only person who can understand your horse, or asks you to trust them more than your own judgment, I’d be cautious.

Be equally wary of anyone who uses fear or shame. The horse world already has enough fear in it. We do not need spiritualized fear added on top.

Animal communication should never replace veterinary care or other qualified professionals. It can be part of the conversation, but it should never become the whole conversation.

Listen closely to how a communicator speaks about the people caring for the horse. Information should open inquiry, not create blame. There are many people in a horse’s life, and often the people doing the most daily care are carrying the most invisible labour. A good communicator invites the care team into the conversation rather than turning the horse’s message into an accusation.

Horses deserve better than certainty.

They deserve curiosity, humility, and care.

How to prepare for a session

1. Know why you're booking the session

Before you book, take a moment to ask yourself why.

Are you trying to understand a behaviour, support a transition, explore a performance challenge, prepare for retirement, care for an aging or ill animal, improve your relationship, or better understand if in your horse’s routine is causing stress?

There isn’t a right or wrong reason.

Having a clear intention simply helps you ask better questions.

2. Prepare a few meaningful questions

I’d choose three to six questions.

Not twenty.

Give the session enough direction, but leave room for what wants to come through.

Some questions you might ask are:

• What does my horse need me to understand right now?

• How does my horse feel in their body?

• Is there anything in their daily routine that’s causing stress?

• Is there anything I do that helps them feel safe, or creates pressure or confusion?

• What do they need more of? What do they need less of?

• Is there anything they’re trying to show me that I’ve missed?

If you have a performance horse, you might also ask about travel, showing, fatigue, or whether there’s anything in the warm-up or competition routine that’s affecting them.

If your horse is older, your questions may shift toward comfort, daily life, how they feel about their role, and what they need from you in this stage.

For end-of-life situations, I’d be especially careful and tender. Animal communication can be beautiful here, but it should be held alongside veterinary guidance, quality-of-life assessment, and your own knowledge of your horse.

3. Do not use the session to avoid what you already know

We may seek out an animal communicator because we're hoping the horse will give us permission to avoid a difficult truth.

If your horse is lame, call the vet. If they’re dangerous, get qualified support. If their management isn’t meeting their needs, change the management. If they’re showing signs of pain, don’t bypass the body in search of a mystical explanation.

Animal communication should help us face reality more honestly, not become a way to spiritualize avoidance.

4. Keep notes

Whether the communicator provides notes or not, write things down.

Watch for:

• Specific details

• Physical sensations

• Emotional themes

• Anything that surprises you

• Anything that doesn’t make sense yet

• Anything that should be explored further with your vet, trainer, groom, or bodyworker

Some messages make sense immediately.

Others take weeks.

A few never do.

That’s okay.

Not everything has to be forced into meaning.

During the session

Stay curious without rushing to conclusions.

You don’t need to perform belief, and you don’t need to be cynical. You also don’t need to accept everything that’s said as fact.

Just listen.

Pay attention to what is personal to your horse. What surprises you? What stirs emotion? What echoes what you’ve sensed before? And where do you resist, especially if it’s because the message is uncomfortable?

Ask questions.

A good communicator shouldn’t be threatened by genuine curiosity.

You might ask:

• Can you explain that a little more?

• Are you sensing that physically or emotionally?

• Is this connected to what’s happening now, or is it from the past?

• Is there anything practical I can do with this information?

• Is this something you’d encourage me to discuss with my vet?

• How confident are you about what you’re receiving?

The session should be collaborative. You should be comfortable asking questions, exploring ideas, and reflecting together in the horse’s best interest.

A session should be a conversation in service of the horse, not a performance you're expected to sit through in silence.

After the session: what to do with the information

A session is only as valuable as what you do with it afterward.

Rather than trying to make sense of everything immediately, I'd sit with three questions.

1. What needs to be checked?

If the communicator mentions physical discomfort, changes in behaviour or appetite, tack discomfort, or anything related to your horse’s body, consider who is best placed to help you investigate. That might be your vet, farrier, bodyworker, saddle fitter, trainer, or another member of your horse’s care team.

Don’t panic.

Just take the next sensible step.

2. What can be changed immediately?

The message may point to a small adjustment.

More downtime. A different warm-up. More turnout. A gentler grooming routine. More time before loading. More choice where possible.

Not every insight calls for a major change.

The most respectful response is often a small, consistent one.

3. What does this ask of me?

Animal communication doesn’t only invite us to understand the horse.

It asks us to examine ourselves.

• Where am I not listening?

• Where am I rushing?

• Where am I projecting my own hopes or fears?

• Where have I mistaken compliance for consent?

• Where am I asking the horse to carry a dream that belongs to me?

• Where am I unwilling to change my plan?.

Used well, animal communication doesn’t make the horse more convenient.

It asks more of us.

Where I stand

I don’t believe every horse person needs to work with an animal communicator, and I don’t believe every animal communicator offers the same quality of work.

I’ve worked with animal communicators myself. Some experiences have been remarkably helpful. Others have been less clear or effective.

What I do believe is that horses are always giving us information, even if we don’t yet understand all the ways they’re communicating it.

The best horse people I know aren’t closed to new ideas.

They’re curious enough to ask questions, discerning enough to test what they hear against the horse in front of them, and humble enough to change their minds.

Because horses have a way of humbling certainty.

They remind us that information can come through the body, behaviour, the relationship, intuition, and perhaps, at times, through experiences we don't yet have words for.

My hope is for a horse world where intuition and ethics sit at the same table.

Where animal communication is neither dismissed as a party trick nor elevated above good horsemanship. Where we ask better questions and, if the horse answers, we’re willing to consider what might need to change.

A small reflection before you book

Before working with an animal communicator, I’d ask myself:

• Am I open to hearing what I wasn’t expecting?

• Am I willing to explore the information responsibly?

• Am I willing to involve the people who care for my horse if needed?

• Am I willing to change if the message asks it of me?

And if the answer to that last question is no, am I really ready for the conversation I’m about to have?

Have you ever worked with an animal communicator?

There is a false binary in the horse world that I have never fully believed.

It says you must choose.

Serious rider or spiritual woman.
Competitor or mystic.
High performance or heart-led.
Ambitious or embodied.
Disciplined or intuitive.
A rider who wants to win, or a woman who wants to be connected.

As if devotion to the horse means you are no longer allowed to care about excellence.
As if wanting to win automatically makes you less conscious.
As if being intuitive means you cannot also be technical, strategic, brave, fit, focused, and deeply competitive.

I think this binary is one of the reasons so much of the woo-woo in the horse world stays hidden.

The crystals stay tucked away. Animal communicators are whispered about. Breathwork gets called “mental preparation.” Intuition becomes “experience.”

But if you look hard enough, you begin to notice the pattern.

A trainer says, "I just have a feeling." A rider visualizes every fence before heading into the ring. A groom senses something has changed before anyone can explain why. None of it feels unusual. It's simply part of the culture.

Maybe we’ve been speaking this language all along. We just haven’t always called it spirituality.

The barn world is full of mystics who do not call themselves mystics. Luciana Diniz simply happens to be one of the few willing to say it out loud, and she shared with me what that has looked like throughout her life as an Olympic rider and high profile horsewoman in the industry.

There is a particular kind of plan that exists in high-performance sport.

It is not really a plan. It is a machine.

The flights are booked.
The trucks are loaded.
The entries are made.
The passports are sorted.
The grooms know the route.
The rider knows the plan.
The horses have been selected not only for the show in front of them, but for the show after that, and the show after that, and the delicate invisible mathematics of keeping an elite string in rhythm.

A horse does not simply “go to a show” at that level.

A horse becomes part of an entire logistical ecosystem. The body of the horse is organized around the human plan. The plan moves across countries, borders, arenas, sponsorships, expectations, owners, rankings, and weather.

And then, sometimes, if you are brave enough or strange enough or humble enough to ask in a different way, the horse interrupts the plan.

This is the part of animal communication that I think we misunderstand.

We make it whimsical. We make it sentimental. We make it into the sort of thing that people can laugh off as a party trick or a crazy story or drinks.

What does your horse want for dinner?
Does your horse like his name?
Does your horse know you love him?

And of course, sometimes it is that. Sometimes it is sweet. Sometimes it is intimate. Sometimes it is funny.

But sometimes animal communication is not cute at all.

Sometimes it is deeply inconvenient information.

Sometimes it comes with a cost.

Sometimes the horse says no.

And then the real question begins.

Not: Do you believe in animal communication?

But: If you ask the horse, are you willing to let the answer change you? Change the plan? Change the story?

Luciana Diniz told me a story that I have not been able to stop thinking about.

It was 2015. She had WinningMood, the big, beautiful sensitive stallion owned by Eduardo Rovelli. WinningMood was powerful, talented, enormous in presence — but also delicate in nature and constitution. He had, as Luciana described it, always been a bit sensitive in his stomach. A big horse, a stallion, and yet not invulnerable. That is something horse people know but the sport world often forgets: the horses who look the strongest are not always the ones who feel the strongest inside.

At the time, Luciana was meant to go to the Global Tour events in Rome and then Vienna. The horses were meant to travel. The plan was already in motion.

And then animal communicator Amelia Kinkade came into the picture.

There is a strange little myth in the horse world that mysticism has a dress code, an archetype, a place.

That if a woman is intuitive, embodied, spiritual, or deeply connected to horses, she must look a certain way, act a certain way or ride a certain way.

She must ride bareback in the field.
She must wear linen.
She must have a nose piercing.
She must reject competition.
She must speak softly with her hand on her heart.
She must not care about winning.
She must not wear white breeches.
She must not have a grooming trunk full of sprays, studs, poultice, crystals, and snacks.

But the woo woo is woven into the horse world and the horsewoman mystic in all of us is much closer to the surface than we realize.

She might ride in a rope halter. She might also ride in a double bridle.

She might do liberty work at sunrise. She might also be walking the course for a Grand Prix with a protection stone in her pocket.

She might use animal communication on all her top horses.

She might also drop six figures on a horse, fly to Europe to try them, and have the PPE reviewed by three vets.

She might pull oracle cards before a clinic.

She might also have a competition calendar, a sports psychologist, a spreadsheet, and a saddle fitter on speed dial.

She might be barefoot in the arena.

She might also be in white breeches, a shadbelly, and a helmet that cost more than her first car.

The awakened horsewoman does not belong to one discipline, one aesthetic, one income bracket, one philosophy, or one corner of the barn.

The truth is, after speaking with, riding with, working with and living with hundreds of different horsemen and horsewoman across the expanse of the horse world, I can tell you…

The horse world is far more woo-woo than people think.

Not performatively woo-woo.

Not Instagram woo-woo.

Not “I bought a crystal and now I am healed” woo-woo.

I mean the real, quiet, often private world of horse people who know there is more happening between horses and humans than biomechanics, training theory, and feed schedules can explain.

I have known world-class dressage barns that bury crystals in the ground.

I have worked with Olympic show jumpers who use animal communicators almost monthly.

I have watched cowboys use pendulums to ask questions of their horses, their own bodies, and the universe.

I have witnessed ranch ropers, real working horsemen, center their energy like a monk before stepping into a round pen with a young colt.

I have talked to Badminton winners who practice daily manifestation.

I know ambitious dressage riders who run eight-figure businesses and work devoutly with frequency, intuition, and energetic alignment.

I know celebrity horse owners who practice cord cuttings after buying a new horse.

I know cowgirl hall-of-famers who study and practice numerology.

I know top riders who would never publicly call themselves spiritual but will not get on a horse until they have cleared their energy and activated their root chakra.

I know trainers who roll their eyes at “woo” but can feel a horse’s mind, body and spirit change before the horse has visibly changed.

I know horsemen who would never say the word “channel,” but they know when a horse has given them an answer and when another human is incongruent.

The language differs.

The knowing does not.

That is what fascinates me.

Because the world of woo is not exclusive to one corner of the horse world.

It is not owned by natural horsemanship.

It is not owned by liberty work.

It is not owned by women in flowy dresses walking through wildflower fields with loose horses.

It is not separate from sport.

It is not separate from ambition.

It is not separate from excellence.

You can be embodied and still horse show.

You can receive sacred downloads and still wear white breeches.

You can jump in Grand Prixs and carry crystals in your pocket.

You can use an animal communicator and still run a serious performance program.

You can connect to your horse’s spirit and still care deeply about clean changes, straightness, soundness, and scope.

You can believe in manifestation and still train like an athlete.

You can be mystical and meticulous.

You can be intuitive and ambitious.

You can be spiritual and competitive.

You can be connected and still want to win.

This is the part I think the horse world gets wrong.

We keep treating “mystical” as if it means vague.

As if intuition is the opposite of discipline.

As if being spiritual means being unserious.

As if a woman who speaks about energy cannot also understand conditioning, lameness, bloodlines, nutrition, business, and sport.

But the most powerful horsewomen I know are not choosing between worlds; they are integrating them.

They know the vet matters.

They also know their intuition matters.

They call the bodyworker.

They also listen to the dream they had about the horse three nights before the horse went lame.

They use science.

They also use prayer or manifestation.

They take radiographs.

They also ask the horse what they need.

They know when to call the farrier.

They also know when the energy in the barn feels off.

They do not confuse mysticism with irresponsibility.

They do not spiritually bypass good care.

They do not say, “The horse told me he is fine,” while ignoring pain.

That is not awakening, that is avoidance.

The awakened horsewoman does not abandon reality.

She expands it.

She is not less grounded because she is mystical. She is more grounded because she knows the physical world is only one layer of the conversation and horses are a walking reminder of that.

The horse has a body and a nervous system.

The horse has memories and preferences.

The horse has emotional history and relational history.

And perhaps, if we are brave enough to say it, the horse also has a soul.

This is where so many horsewomen already live, whether or not they have language for it. We know when a horse is holding on to something.

We know when a barn has tension inside it. We know when a horse has shut down. We know when we are the problem.

We know when a horse has agreed but not consented. We know when the work is technically correct but spiritually dead.

We know when something has left the room and we know when something has entered it.

And because horses are prey-informed species, because they are so profoundly sensitive to field, pressure, intention, breath, emotion, rhythm, and coherence, they are constantly showing us what we are carrying.

Not what we say we are carrying; what we are actually carrying.

They reveal the hidden weather.

This is why the mystical has always lived quietly in the horse world.

Because anyone who has spent enough time with horses knows that strange things happen around them.

Synchronicities.

Dreams.

Sudden knowings.

Messages that arrive through the body.

A horse that walks directly to the person in the group who is grieving.

A mare who refuses to be touched by one person and softens instantly for another.

A gelding who acts out the exact emotional pattern of his owner.

A young horse who will not settle until the human exhales and releases the tension of the truth they have been swallowing.

A retired horse who becomes a doorway for a woman’s entire life to reorganize.

You can dismiss all of that, of course.

Many people do.

But horsewomen know.

Even the practical ones, especially the practical ones.

They may not call it magic.

They may call it timing.

Feel. Gut instinct. Good horsemanship. Experience. Reading the room. Knowing horses.

But somewhere underneath the acceptable language, there is a deeper truth: horses have always been spiritual animals.

Not because they are cute, not because they are soft, not because they exist to heal us.

But because they live at the threshold.

Between wild and domestic.

Between body and spirit.

Between power and surrender.

Between movement and stillness.

Between fear and trust.

Between the human world and something much older.

This is why so many cultures have placed the horse in myth, death, prophecy, fertility, war, pilgrimage, initiation, and transformation.

The horse has carried the warrior, the horse has carried the queen. The horse has carried the dead, the horse has carried the message of civilization.

The horse has carried the girl out of society and into the wilderness; carrying women back to themselves.

So when modern horsewomen begin speaking about energy, animal communication, protection stones, frequency, manifestation, Reiki, numerology, ancestral healing, or sacred contracts with horses, I do not see that as a strange new trend.

I see it as a remembering.

The Aquarian age has very much arrived in the horse world. But perhaps it was always here.

Perhaps it was simply hidden under polished boots, black coats, trucker hats, ranch dust, vet bills, and the unspoken fear of being laughed at or eyes rolling (the quiet but stinging judgement we all know too well).

Because let’s be honest.

A lot of horsewomen are private mystics.

They will text an animal communicator before they will post about one.

They will tuck turquoise into a stall for protection but never tell the boarders.

They will bury crystals at the corners of an arena and then act like it was just good footing.

They will speak to their horses in the dark and then pretend, in daylight, that everything is practical.

They will ask the universe for signs, receive them, and then go to the barn like nothing happened.

They will manifest the horse, the farm, the client, the healing, the sale, the baby, the move, the money, the miracle.

And then they will call it coincidence, hard-work or good timing.

And it can be those things, but it can also be relationship.

With the horse.

With the land.

With the unseen.

With the future self.

With the part of us that knows before the mind can explain.

And I think it is time we stop pretending that the mystical horsewoman is some fringe character standing outside the real horse world in a tie-die tshirt and feather earrings.

She is deep inside it.

She is in the VIP tent, she is in the warm-up ring, she is in the branding pen, she is in the dressage barn, she is in the rehab facility, she is in the feed room.

She is in Wellington.

She is in Weatherford.

She is in Aachen.

She is in Gloucestershire.

She is in New York.

She is in the mountains with one horse and no audience, she is in the boardroom negotiating a sponsorship contract, she is in the foaling stall at 3 a.m.

She is holding the lead rope, she is holding the vision.

She is holding the frequency of what comes next.

And she does not have to prove her spirituality by rejecting the world she came from.

She does not have to leave sport to become sacred, she does not have to stop competing to become conscious.

She does not have to become less ambitious to become more awake, she does not have to look stereotypically mystical to be mystical.

Because awakening is not an outfit.

It is not an aesthetic; it is not a discipline.

It is not a brand identity; it is a relationship to truth.

It is the willingness to notice what other people dismiss.

It is the courage to listen when something hidden speaks.

It is the humility to accept that horses know things we do not.

It is the discipline to stay grounded while expanding your perception.

It is the maturity to hold both the veterinary report and the channelled message.

It is the capacity to say:

I believe in soundness and spirit.
I believe in training and timing.
I believe in excellence and energy.
I believe in horsemanship and mystery.
I believe in the visible and the invisible.
I believe horses are bodies.
I believe horses are beings.
I believe horses are teachers.
I believe horses are thresholds.

And I believe the horse world is ready to stop laughing at the women who have known this all along.

This month, I want to open a deeper conversation about the mystical side of horses.

Not as performance, not as fantasy, not as an escape from responsibility.

But as a serious, grounded, embodied practice for horsewomen who know there is more happening between us and horses than we have been allowed to say out loud.

We are going to talk about animal communication.

We are going to talk about protection and energetic hygiene.

We are going to talk about manifestation.

We are going to talk about intuition.

We are going to talk about the horse as oracle, mirror, messenger, and guide.

We are going to talk about what happens when a woman stops apologizing for the fact that she knows things through her body, her horses, her dreams, her instincts, and her field.

Because the awakened horsewoman is not new.

She has always been here.

She just finally has language.

And she is not asking for permission anymore.

Because the future of the horse world is not less mystical.

It is more honest, more grounded and more connected.

Before Medusa was a monster, she was beautiful.

At least, in the version of the myth I keep returning to.

There are older versions of Medusa where she is already a Gorgon, already monstrous, already something terrible to behold. But in Ovid’s telling, Medusa begins as a beautiful maiden, famous especially for her hair. Then Neptune — the Roman Poseidon — violates her in Minerva’s temple. Minerva — the Roman Athena — does not punish the god. She punishes Medusa. Her beautiful hair is transformed into snakes. Later, Perseus will kill her while avoiding her gaze through a mirrored shield, and from Medusa’s severed body the winged horse Pegasus is born. (Theoi)

That is the version that matters to this essay.

Not because it is the only Medusa. Myth is never that tidy. But because this version tells a story women recognize in their bodies: a woman is beautiful, desired, violated, punished, transformed, feared, hunted, silenced — and then the world still finds a way to use what comes from her.

And out of that wound comes a horse.

Not just any horse. Pegasus. The winged horse. The creature we associate with poetry, imagination, inspiration, transcendence, divine movement, impossible ascent.

Pegasus does not arrive clean from the sky. He is not lowered from heaven on a beam of light. He is born from Medusa’s blood.

Which means one of the most beautiful horses in Western mythology, and a horse we refer to in horse sport often, is born from the wound of a woman the world could no longer bear to look at directly.

That image has been haunting me.

Because I think the horse world loves Pegasus. We love the image of the winged horse: beauty, nobility, athleticism, freedom, grace, spiritual ascent. We put wings on horses in our logos, our stories, our dreams, our language. We want the horse as symbol of transcendence. We want the horse as beauty. We want the horse as salvation.

But I am not sure we always want to remember his mother.

I am not sure we want to remember that Pegasus came from Medusa.

I am not sure we want to remember that the winged horse was born not from obedience, not from sweetness, not from goodness, but from rupture.

From blood.

From a woman made monstrous by what happened to her.

And maybe that is where this myth begins to speak directly to horse women and the horse woman’s experience.

Because so much of what we call “goodness” depends on what we are willing to ignore.

One of the most revealing patterns I see in the horse world is what happens when a woman becomes publicly opinionated.

Not quietly insightful.
Not politely thoughtful.
Not “brave” in a way everyone can applaud after the fact.

I mean opinionated.

Consistent. Clear. Unapologetic. Public. Willing to name what other people would rather leave unnamed.

When a woman in the horse world speaks this way, something predictable happens. At first, people may engage with the issue. They may discuss welfare, economics, training, judging, access, money, ethics, or whatever uncomfortable subject she has brought into the room.

But very quickly, the conversation often shifts.

It stops being about what she said.

It becomes about what kind of woman she must be to have said it.

Is she bitter?
Is she jealous?
Is she angry?
Is she attention-seeking?
Is she qualified enough?
Is she successful enough?
Is she nice enough?
Is she balanced enough?
Is she too much?

The claim disappears.

The woman becomes the debate.

And I think this is one of the most important patterns for the horse world to examine, because the way we treat opinionated women reveals something very old and very uncomfortable about us.

We still confuse goodness with compliance.

We like good horses.
We like good women.

And often, if we are honest, we define both in similar ways.

A good horse is quiet. Willing. Useful. Pleasant. Safe. Manageable. Not dramatic. Not dangerous. Not resistant. Not embarrassing. Not disruptive.

A good woman is expected to be many of the same things.

Kind. Humble. Helpful. Grateful. Pretty enough. Smart, but not condescending. Strong, but not threatening. Passionate, but not angry. Public, but not too visible. Opinionated, but not too certain. Critical, but not too sharp. Successful, but not arrogant. Defiant, but only in ways the room has already approved.

So when a woman becomes loudly opinionated, she does not merely offer an idea. She violates the training contract. She steps outside the lines of acceptable femininity.

And the industry reacts almost as if she has refused an aid, a fence or loading into a trailer.

The correction of the defiant woman

The horse world does not always simply disagree with defiant women. It often tries to re-train them.

This is where tone policing becomes so revealing.

“You could have said it nicer.”
“You would reach more people if you were less angry.”
“You are making the industry look bad.”
“You are being divisive.”
“You need to be more balanced.”
“You should be careful.”
“You should be more respectful.”
“You are not helping.”

Sometimes, of course, delivery matters. There are ways of communicating that open people, and ways of communicating that close people. None of us are above critique. Women can be wrong. Women can be biased. Women can be performative. Women can oversimplify. Women can cause harm.

But tone critique becomes suspicious when it arrives before anyone has truly engaged with the substance.

When people can describe exactly how a woman made them feel, but cannot explain which part of her argument they disagree with, we are no longer having a conversation about truth. We are having a conversation about obedience.

The message underneath is often:

Please become easier to listen to.
Please make your truth more palpable.
Please do not make us feel accused.
Please do not threaten the system that has rewarded us.
Please return to the acceptable shape of womanhood.

And if she refuses?

Then the character assassination begins.

She is crazy.
She is bitter.
She is jealous.
She is just doing it for attention.
She has an agenda.
She is dangerous.
She is not a real horsewoman.
She does not understand.
She is too emotional.
She is too aggressive.
She is too much.

This is not just disagreement. It is social correction. It is reputational discipline. It is the public equivalent of taking hold of the reins and saying: come back here.

The psychology behind this

There is actual research language for what so many women feel in their bodies before they ever have words for it.

One of the clearest frameworks is role congruity theory, developed by Alice Eagly and Steven Karau. The theory argues that prejudice arises when people see a mismatch between the traits expected of women and the traits expected of leaders. Leadership requires authority, certainty, agency, and public influence. Traditional femininity still expects warmth, softness, agreeability, and emotional caretaking. When women behave in ways associated with leadership, they can be judged more harshly because they are seen as violating what women are “supposed” to be. (mlkrook.org)

Another related body of research is the backlash effect. Laurie Rudman and Peter Glick found that agentic women — women who are assertive, ambitious, direct, and self-possessed — may be viewed as competent but punished for seeming insufficiently nice. (ResearchGate)

This matters because the horse world often asks women to perform a very specific kind of authority.

You may be competent, but you should be humble.
You may be visible, but you should be grateful.
You may critique, but you should be gentle.
You may lead, but you should not appear to enjoy power.
You may be right, but you should not sound too sure.

The woman is trapped in a double bind.

If she is too soft, she is ignored.

If she is too strong, she is punished.

If she qualifies every sentence, she lacks authority.

If she speaks plainly, she lacks warmth.

If she stays quiet, she is complicit.

If she speaks up, she becomes the problem.

And over time, this creates a very specific psychological cost.

What it does to women

The first cost is self-monitoring. Before an opinionated woman says anything publicly, she often rehearses the reaction in advance.

How will this be taken?
Will people think I am attacking them?
Will I lose clients?
Will I lose friends?
Will I be misunderstood?
Will this follow me?
Will people talk about me?
Will they still invite me in?
Will I become “that woman”?

This is exhausting.

It means the woman is not only doing the work of forming an idea. She is also doing the work of predicting the punishment for having one.

The second cost is self-silencing.

Self-silencing is the psychological pattern of restricting one’s own thoughts, feelings, or expression in order to preserve connection, safety, or belonging -sound familiar? Interestingly enough, horses do this, in their own way, but more on that later.

Research on self-silencing has connected it to traditional gender roles, relational pressure, and mental health consequences, including vulnerability to depression. (Springer)

In the horse world, self-silencing can sound like:

I will not say anything because I still have to show here.
I will not say anything because that trainer is powerful or high profile.
I will not say anything because everyone loves that person.
I will not say anything because I am not famous enough, good enough, liked enough.
I will not say anything because I do not want to be seen as difficult.
I will not say anything because I do not want to make my barn uncomfortable.
I will not say anything because I cannot afford the consequences.

So the woman learns to swallow the sentence before it reaches her mouth.

The third cost is anger shame.

Women are often taught that anger makes us ugly, unstable, unspiritual, unsafe, or untrustworthy. But anger is not always a failure of regulation. Sometimes anger is the nervous system recognizing a boundary violation. Sometimes anger is moral intelligence. Sometimes anger is the body saying: something is wrong here. Sometimes anger is sacred, necessary and reclamation.

And yet research has shown that anger can be interpreted very differently depending on gender. In one study, men who expressed anger in a professional setting were granted higher status, while women who expressed anger were granted lower status. (Social Judgments)

This is why women often feel the need to translate their anger into something more palatable before anyone will listen.

We soften.
We explain.
We apologize.
We add disclaimers.
We say “maybe.”
We say “I could be wrong.”
We say “just my opinion.”
We say “I don’t want to offend anyone.”

And sometimes those phrases are sincere. But sometimes they are just another form of a bridle.

And perhaps one of the deepest costs of being trained to be good is that anger becomes almost impossible to hold. Not because the anger is wrong, but because anger threatens the entire identity of the good girl, the good horse, the good woman, the good mare.

But I think anger deserves its own conversation.

The horse-world mirror

This is where the horse world gives us a mirror so clear it is almost painful. Because we do this to horses too.

A horse resists, and we call her stubborn.
A horse says no, and we call her difficult.
A horse expresses discomfort, and we call her reactive.
A horse becomes defensive, and we call her dangerous.
A horse refuses to perform, and we ask what is wrong with her character before we ask what is happening in her body, her mind, her training, her environment, or her relationship to pressure.

We assign character before we investigate communication.

And then we do the same to women.

A woman resists, and we call her bitter.
A woman says no, and we call her difficult.
A woman expresses discomfort, and we call her emotional or dramatic.
A woman becomes defensive, and we call her dangerous.
A woman refuses to perform politeness, and we ask what is wrong with her character before we ask what she might be responding to.

The parallel is not accidental.

The horse world has inherited centuries of beliefs about control, obedience, mastery, submission, beauty, performance, and usefulness. Those beliefs do not disappear simply because women are now the vast majority; making up so much of equestrian culture globally.

These beliefs live in the language.

Good girl.
Good mare.
Good horse.
Good student.
Good client.
Good sport.
Good owner.

Praise can be a harness. And many of us have worn it.

The larger world does this too

This pattern is not unique to the horse world.

We see it in politics when women leaders are scrutinized not only for their policies, but for their tone, clothes, facial expressions, ambition, likability, motherhood, sexuality, and emotional range.

We see it in climate activism when young women like Greta Thunberg become targets not only for disagreement, but for personal attacks on their age, gender, disability, affect, and supposed motivations.

We see it online, where women in public life are not only disagreed with, but harassed in ways designed to damage their credibility, safety, and willingness to keep speaking. A 2026 UN Women report on online violence against women in public life found that online abuse is pushing women toward self-censorship; in the survey cited by UN Women, 41 percent of women respondents said they self-censor on social media to avoid abuse, and 19 percent reported self-censoring in professional work as a result of online violence. (unwomen.org). These are women in authority positions.

This matters because silencing does not always look like someone taking away the microphone.

Sometimes silencing looks like making the cost of speaking so high that a woman begins to edit herself before anyone else has to.

And that is how culture trains compliance. Not only through punishment.

Through anticipation.

Why the opinionated woman is so threatening

The opinionated woman is not threatening because she has thoughts.

Women have always had thoughts.

She is threatening because she makes her thoughts public. She moves private knowing into public language. She turns the whisper network into a loud sentence.

She says the thing many people have felt but have not dared to say. And in doing so, she breaks an agreement.

Every industry has agreements about what can and cannot be named. The horse world is no different.

Do not question the high-profile trainer.
Do not question the beautiful performance.
Do not question the economics if people are still paying.
Do not question the welfare if the horse is still winning.
Do not question the judge.
Do not question the high-paying sponsor.
Do not question the system too loudly.
Do not embarrass the sport.
Do not make people uncomfortable.

The opinionated woman breaks that spell. And when a spell breaks, people often blame the person who named it.

But what if defiance is information?

The horse world has always asked horses to carry what humans do not want to carry.

Our ambition.
Our status.
Our longing.
Our control.
Our fear.
Our need to feel powerful.
Our need to feel good.

And women have carried much of this too.

We have carried the injustice.
The politeness.
Diplomacy.
The gratitude.
The carefulness.
The silence.

So perhaps the opinionated woman is not the breakdown of the horse world. Perhaps she is one of its returning voices.

The mare who pins her ears.
The woman who says no.
The body that refuses to keep performing softness or agreeableness while something unspoken remains present.

And maybe the question is no longer whether she is good.

Maybe the question is whether we are ready to truly listen.

Horse shows are never just horse shows.

They are spreadsheets.

They are hotel rooms.
Fuel receipts.
Entry fees.
Braiding cash.
Time off work.
Packing lists.
Trainer fees.
Late nights.
Early mornings.
Credit card balances.
Hope.
Pressure.
Comparison.
Community.
Exhaustion.
Proof.

For The Self-Funded Dreamer, showing is one of the most meaningful parts of her horse life.

It is also one of the most painful expenses to justify.

She names show entries as the expense that feels hardest to justify. Lessons and specialized hoof care feel worth it. Show fees, quality veterinary care, and the deeper costs of recognized competition surprised her as she got further into horses. She started spending more in recent years because she began showing and training regularly.

This is the strange thing about competition.

It can be joyful and financially brutal at the same time.

A show can be the place where the barn community comes alive. Where you laugh in the aisle, cheer for friends, braid under lights, watch horses settle into the atmosphere, and feel, for a few days, like you belong to the same beautiful, exhausting little traveling circus as everyone else.

It can also be the place where the math becomes impossible to ignore.

The Self-Funded Dreamer budgets down to the paycheck. She pays her bills, calculates the essentials, sees what is left, and puts show expenses and hotel costs on a credit card she works hard to pay off in full each month. She does not describe going out and spending recklessly on herself. The card is for the horse show. The hotel. The dream she is trying to keep moving.

And then she braids.

Braiding is her side hustle. At some shows, it pays for the whole weekend. She charges $65 per mane per day. At one three-day show, she braided eight horses a day while also riding. That can add up to meaningful money — around $1,500 for a weekend — but the cost is sleep, recovery, emotional bandwidth, and the ability to show up for her own horse with anything left in the tank.

She described staying up until 1 a.m., going back at 4 a.m., riding, and doing it all again.

That is the hidden economy of belonging in the horse world.

People see the rider in the show ring.

They do not always see the woman who braided until the middle of the night to pay for the right to be there.

They see the test.

They do not see the credit card.

They see the horse turned out beautifully.

They do not see the hands that braided eight other horses first.

They see the adult amateur in the saddle.

They do not see the working woman trying to buy her own childhood dream one exhausted weekend at a time.

This is where The Price to Ride becomes about more than affordability.

It becomes about what people are willing to do to stay close to horses.

There is a phrase that wounds horse people more than non-horse people understand.

“It’s just a hobby.”

It sounds harmless enough.

Maybe even reasonable.

After all, for many people, horses sit in the same mental category as golf, skiing, yoga, shopping, vacations, wine, boats, home decor, or the expensive fitness membership someone swears they are going to use more next month.

A hobby.

Something extra.

Something optional.

Something you do after the real life is paid for.

But for many horse people, and especially for many horse women, the phrase lands differently.

Because horses are rarely just extra.

They are often the center.

They shape our time, our money, our bodies, our friendships, our marriages, our careers, our geography, our sense of self, our weekends, our childhood memories, our future plans, and our understanding of what makes life meaningful.

So when someone calls horses “just a hobby,” or frankly use the word "just" all together, it can feel like they are not only dismissing the expense.

They are dismissing us.

The Self-Funded Dreamer knows this wound intimately.

She is 30, married, childfree, works in a technical role, owns a farm, and pays for her horses herself. She is the highest earner in her household by quite a bit. Her horse expenses are paid entirely by her. Her husband, she says, does not seem to mind largely because she does not use his money.

And yet she still feels judged.

Not by her barn group.

By her family.

In her survey, she wrote that her horse spending is “not taken seriously.” She wishes her family understood that horses are not just a hobby, but something she takes seriously, her favorite thing in life, and something she would like to have supported in the same way other family members’ activities are supported.

That last part matters.

Because the issue is not only money.

It is recognition.

She does not want everyone to pay for the horses. She already pays for them.

She does not need everyone to become a horse person. She knows they cannot fully understand what they have not lived.

But she wants the thing that matters most to her to be treated as real.

That is such a reasonable human desire.

And it is one many horse people are denied.

The horse world is full of women who are astonishingly self-propelled. Women who work more because of horses. Choose jobs because of horses. Stay in stressful careers because the horse needs board, shoes, insurance, training, and a future. Women who build whole lives around a childhood love that never went away.

And then, after all that effort, they are told the spending is frivolous.

This is where the cultural analysis gets interesting.

Because there are certain kinds of spending women are socially permitted to do, and certain kinds they are asked to defend.

Children’s activities are considered natural.
Family vacations are considered bonding.
Home improvement is considered responsible.
Beauty spending is sometimes mocked, but still culturally legible.
Wellness spending is increasingly normalized.
Professional development is considered ambitious.
Weddings are allowed to be irrationally expensive because the culture understands the ritual.

But horses?

Horses sit in a strange category.

Too expensive to be dismissed as casual, but too misunderstood to be respected as essential.

And so the horse woman is often asked to justify what other people simply get to want.

The Self-Funded Dreamer is childfree by choice. Her family has wanted her to have children. Her friends and family talk about the cost of daycare, and she cannot help but compare it to the cost of training board. If one person can spend heavily on childcare because that is the life they chose, why should she feel ashamed that the money she is not spending on children goes to horses?

That is not a flippant comparison.

It is a serious one.

Because beneath it is a question about whose care counts.

If a woman spends money on a child, the expense is understood as responsibility.

If a woman spends money on a horse, the expense is often understood as indulgence.

But what if the horse is not an accessory to her life?

What if the horse is one of the central relationships of her life?

What if the horse is a living being whose welfare depends on her choices?

What if the horse has needs that are not optional simply because the outside world does not recognize the relationship as family?

This is where the language of “hobby” becomes inadequate.

A hobby does not need glue-on shoes.

A hobby does not colic.

A hobby does not grow old in your field.

A hobby does not require euthanasia decisions.

A hobby does not look at you from a stall and ask whether you are going to do right by them.

A horse does.

The Self-Funded Dreamer wrote about an old horse she had to put down after spending money on testing, even when she knew deep down he might not come back. She had never made that decision before. He had been with her since high school. The financial decision was tangled with fear, love, grief, responsibility, and the terror of deciding when enough is enough.

That is not hobby math.

That is care math.

And care math is rarely clean.

The non-horse world often sees the purchase but not the responsibility. It sees the show entry but not the years of longing behind it. It sees the farrier bill but not the horse’s comfort. It sees the trailer, the saddle, the clinic, the show coat, the vet invoice, and assumes excess.

But inside the horse person’s life, those expenses often mean something very different.

The lesson package is not just a lesson package. It is progress, community, confidence, accountability, and the chance to become better.

The shoeing bill is not just a shoeing bill. It is soundness, comfort, welfare, and the ability to keep a beloved horse in work.

The show entry is not just a show entry. It is the adult realization of a childhood dream she could not afford when she was younger.

The young prospect is not just a purchase. It is a complicated attempt to be taken seriously in a discipline where certain horses carry more social credibility than others.

The side hustle is not just extra cash. It is a way to pay for belonging.

This is the part I keep returning to.

The Self-Funded Dreamer is not spending because she is irresponsible.

She is spending because she is trying to keep a life of meaning intact.

And still, she carries guilt.

In her survey, she selected joy, freedom, guilt, and anxiety as emotions that come up around horse spending. She said she feels guilty around show entries and big vet or farrier bills. She said horses make her feel financially small, ashamed, or out of control. Her deepest fear is that something will happen to one of them and she will not be able to save their life because of financial constraints.

That fear is one of the most honest parts of horse ownership.

For many of us, the fear is not only that horses cost too much.

It is that one day they will need more than we can give.

More money.
More care.
More intervention.
More time.
More strength.
More courage.

And we will have to confront the edge of our ability to love them in material form.

Because love, with horses, is not only a feeling.

It is logistics.

It is hauling.
It is savings.
It is stall rest.
It is sedation fees.
It is x-rays.
It is missed work.
It is the 1.5-hour drive to the vet school.
It is getting up early and paying the invoice and doing the thing again next month.

Love becomes a line item.

No wonder people feel guilty.

Not because the love is wrong.

Because the culture gives us so few frameworks for understanding that love as legitimate.

This is why I think the “just a hobby” wound is so deep. It is not simply that people do not understand horses. It is that they do not understand what horses organize inside us.

For The Self-Funded Dreamer, horses are passion, sport, identity, community, childhood dream, and purpose. She says they are the best thing in her life. She says she keeps choosing them because of that.

What a thing to have.

What a thing to be judged for.

There are people who spend their whole lives searching for purpose. Searching for community. Searching for a reason to wake up and know where to go. Searching for the thing that makes them feel rooted to the world.

Horse people often find it early.

Sometimes before kindergarten.

And then spend the rest of their lives trying to afford it.

That is the strange blessing and burden of being a horse person.

You know what you love.

But what you love is expensive.

And because it is expensive, everyone thinks they get to have an opinion about it.

That may be the deepest boundary this essay asks us to draw.

Not everyone gets to understand your horse life.

Not everyone gets to approve of it.

Not everyone gets to agree with your spending, your sacrifices, your priorities, your childfree choices, your retirement math, your show budget, your farrier bills, or your need to drive an hour and a half because your mare needs specialized care.

But not everyone gets to reduce it, either.

The fact that someone else cannot understand the meaning of something does not make it meaningless.

The fact that someone else would not spend the money does not make it irresponsible.

The fact that someone else sees a hobby does not mean you have to accept that word for the thing that has built your life.

Maybe this is what I want horse women to hear:

You do not have to call your deepest source of meaning “just a hobby” to make other people comfortable.

You can call it what it is.

A passion.
A relationship.
A responsibility.
A calling.
A sport.
A discipline.
A community.
A childhood dream that survived into adulthood.
A reason you became as hardworking as you are.

And maybe, when someone asks why you spend so much on horses, you can stop trying to make them understand the whole thing.

You can simply say:

Because this is the life I chose.

And I am the one making it happen.

She is not waiting for someone else to fund her horse life.

That is the first thing to understand.

The Self-Funded Dreamer is 30 years old. She works remotely in the tech field. She is the highest earner in her household - by quite a bit. She owns her farm. She pays for the horses. All of them.

The show horse.
The young prospect.
The mini.
The retirees.
The lessons.
The shows.
The vet school appointments.
The farrier.
The glue-on shoes every four weeks.
The credit card she works hard to pay off every month.
The hotel.
The hauling.
The dream.

She tracks the money.

She knows the math.

And still, she feels guilty.

Not because horses are meaningless.

Because to her, they are not.

As a community, we must get used to being questioned.

Not because everyone asking questions is right.
Not because every online comment is fair.
Not because criticism always comes from a thoughtful, informed, or generous place.

It definitely does not.

But because the era of quiet compliance in the horse world is ending, in fact I’d argue it is already over.

More people are going to speak up. More owners are going to ask questions. More riders are going to challenge federations, horse shows, trainers, public figures, and systems. More people are going to post, write, comment, organize, document, litigate, and demand transparency.

And while that may feel uncomfortable to those in leadership, I do not think it is inherently bad.

I think it is evidence of engagement. Apathy is not a community problem. Silence is. A community that questions its systems is still invested in its future.

How Social Media changed our landscape

The larger world is already moving this way.

Trust in institutions has been under pressure across business, government, media, and NGOs; Edelman’s 2025 Trust Barometer described a “crisis of grievance” marked by polarization, fear, and growing pressure on institutional trust. (Edelman) Social media has also changed the relationship between individuals and institutions: platforms now allow individuals, not only legacy media or governing bodies, to reach large audiences, while audiences decide what gains visibility through sharing, liking, and remixing. That does not mean social media gives everyone true power.

Often, it gives people a perceived voice.

But the perceived voice still changes behavior.

It changes what people expect.
It changes what leaders can ignore.
It changes how quickly a private issue becomes public.
It changes how much opacity a community is willing to tolerate.

The horse world has historically benefited from being a little obscure. It was expensive, niche, insider, relationship-based, and often protected by ambiguity. A lot happened in barns, back rings, sales offices, warm-ups, and private conversations that the wider world never saw.

That is changing.

That era is over.

The cameras are on.
The screenshots exist.
The contracts matter.
The public is watching.
The membership is watching.
The owners are watching.
The next generation is watching.

And they are going to ask questions.

This is especially true because horse sport is already in a social licence reckoning.

World Horse Welfare defines social licence as public approval or acceptance of an activity, and says horse sport’s social licence is being challenged as more questions are raised about the welfare and safety of horses in sport. (World Horse Welfare) Public-opinion research cited by World Horse Welfare and Horse & Hound has shown that a significant portion of the UK public is not satisfied with the status quo: 40% said they would support continued use of horses in sport only if welfare improved, while 20% would not support it under any circumstances. (Horse & Hound)

That conversation is not going away. The question is whether the horse world meets it with defensiveness or curiosity.

Whether we meet this opportunity with attachment to outcome or an openness to evolve.

Because the old response — you just don’t understand horses — is no longer enough.

Sometimes the public does misunderstand horses. Absolutely.

But sometimes the public is noticing things the horse world has normalized.

And that should make us pause.

If you are a federation, horse show, trainer, rider, business, governing body, or public figure in 2026, feedback is now part of the job.

That does not mean every comment deserves equal weight.

There is a difference between constructive criticism and harassment.
There is a difference between public accountability and mob behavior.
There is a difference between speaking up and tearing down.
There is a difference between criticism of systems and cruelty toward individuals, especially children.

But if the instinct is always to dismiss, minimize, block, shame, or become defensive, the horse world will miss the huge opportunity inside the discomfort.

When a community gives feedback, it is saying:

We are watching.
We are invested.
We want this to be better.
We do not want decisions made over our heads.
We do not want to feel like victims of systems we help fund, support, and participate in.

That is not always a threat.

Sometimes it is an invitation.

A healthy community should feel like it is co-creating its future with the systems that govern it. When people feel their experience does not matter, when policies feel imposed rather than explained, when leadership feels distant or opaque, resentment grows.

And resentment is much, much harder to manage than feedback.

We are also seeing accountability move from comment sections into courtrooms.

High-profile horse-sale disputes have made it clear that prestige no longer shields people from scrutiny. Former Olympic champion Eric Lamaze was ordered by an Ontario court to pay over $572,000 plus costs in a horse-sales lawsuit dating back more than 15 years. (Horse & Hound) Other horse-sale litigation involving Lamaze has been complex, including a Florida appeals court reversing a default judgment on due-process grounds, which is a reminder that legal cases are rarely simple — but the broader point remains: horse business dealings once handled through reputation and private trust are increasingly subject to formal accountability. This is not about one person.

It is about a message to the whole industry. The old assumption that status, medals, charm, or proximity to power will protect poor behavior is weakening.

That is a good thing. If money is changing hands, transparency matters. If horses are being sold, commissions matter. If owners are investing, disclosure matters. If riders are advising clients, conflicts of interest matter. If governing bodies are making decisions, process matters.

The future horse world will demand more than “trust me.”

This is the part some people will not like.

Accountability can feel like disrespect if you are used to deference. Questions can feel like attacks if you are used to authority. Transparency can feel like exposure if you are used to ambiguity. But discomfort is not always harm.

Sometimes discomfort is the feeling of an old system being asked to mature, evolve, transmute. The horse world should not fear accountability if it believes in what it is doing.

It should fear the opposite: a community that stops believing it has any ability to influence the culture around it.

That is when people leave. That is when trust collapses. That is when social licence erodes. That is when leadership becomes isolated from the people it claims to serve.

So here is my forewarning, offered with love: More people are going to speak up. More people are going to question welfare standards. More people are going to critique federations.

More people are going to ask why a rule exists. More people are going to ask where the money went. More people are going to ask why a rider was protected. More people are going to ask why a horse show handled a welfare incident poorly.

More people are going to ask why certain behaviors were tolerated for so long.

More people are going to ask why the horse world says it values horses but sometimes acts as though reputation, money, and tradition matter more.

And the smartest leaders will not treat that as rebellion.

They will treat it as data.

They will ask:

What is this feedback telling us?
Where have we failed to communicate?
Where is trust weak?
Where do people feel unheard?
Where are we asking for patience without offering transparency?
Where are we hiding behind tradition because change is uncomfortable?
Where are we confusing criticism with disloyalty?

That is the work now.

Not to silence the questions.

To become worthy of answering them.

The horse world does not need to become ruled by outrage.

That would be a disaster.

But it does need to become more responsive, more transparent, more accountable, and more curious about why people are speaking up.

Because the future of horse sport will not be protected by pretending the criticism is unfair.

It will be protected by making more of the criticism unnecessary.

Better welfare. Better communication. Better sales ethics. Better governance. Better education. Better treatment of grooms. Better protection of children. Better processes for complaints. Better willingness to admit mistakes.

Better ability to say: we heard you, and here is what we are doing.

Feedback is not the enemy. Ignored feedback is.

The horse world is entering an era where power will be questioned more openly, more often, and by more people. That is not the end of the sport.

It is a new beginning.

There is a moment in this conversation where the numbers become almost absurd.

Not because they are inaccurate.

Because they are so specific.

A $250,000 horse.

A $125,000 horse before that.

A $100,000 horse before that.

A $4,000 insurance policy.

A $4,500 insurance policy.

A $1,500 diagnostic workup.

A $500-a-month half lease.

A $12,000 lease.

An $800 glue-on shoe package every six weeks.

A $10,000 two-week horse show.

These are not casual numbers.

And I know some readers will see them and feel something rise in their body.

Maybe envy.

Maybe judgment.

Maybe disbelief.

Maybe grief.

Maybe the familiar horse-world wound of looking at someone else’s access and thinking:

Of course it is easier for her.

Of course she can say these things.

Of course she can build this life.

She has the money.

And yes.

Corporate Equestrian Mom has access.

She is in a serious income bracket. She has a supportive household structure. She has a strong career. She has a high-end horse life.

She has a horse many adult amateurs would dream of owning.

It would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.

But it would also be incomplete to stop there.

Because the more interesting question is not whether she has access.

She does.

The more interesting question is: What does she trade for that access?

This is where her story becomes more useful than a simple abundance story. Because even women with significant incomes make tradeoffs.

If I spend more, I will be happier.
If I spend more, I will get the outcome.
If I spend more, I will avoid heartbreak.

And then horses, with their devastating honesty, remind us:

No.

Money can buy access.

Money can buy options.

Money can buy training, vetting, show records, professional help, better facilities, more selection, better probability, and sometimes a much nicer canter.

But money cannot buy certainty.

There is a version of the horse money story that begins with scarcity.

A rider who cannot afford board.
A woman hiding the vet bill.
A teenager working off lessons.
A horse owner calculating whether the farrier, the credit card, or the mortgage gets paid first.

But there is another version of the story that is just as important.

A woman who looks financially stable from the outside — and is — but only because she built that stability on purpose.

For this installment of Price to Ride, we meet Corporate Equestrian Mom, an anonymous senior-level corporate professional, wife, mother, adult amateur, and lifelong horse girl who has built a serious horse life through a serious career.

Her story is not about horses being easy to afford.

They are not.

It is not about money erasing sacrifice.

It does not.

And it is not about a woman who has figured out how to make the horse world inexpensive.

She has not.

Her story is about what happens when a woman decides, very early, that if she wants horses in her adult life, she is going to have to build a life that can hold them.

When I asked her how her current financial season feels, her answer was immediate:

Stable.

Then, just as quickly, she clarified something important.

It was not always that way.

And it does not stay that way by accident.

She monitors it. Daily. Weekly. Monthly. She is intentional about it. She maintains it.

That distinction matters.

Because in horses, stability is often misunderstood as a feeling.

The feeling of having enough.
The feeling of not panicking when the vet bill comes.
The feeling of being able to pay the board, the farrier, the trainer, the insurance, the show entries, the hotel, the hauling, the lease, the shoes, the supplements, the bodywork, the next thing, and the next thing after that.

But what I heard from Corporate Equestrian Mom is that stability is not just a feeling.

Stability is a system.

It is a set of choices.
A set of boundaries.
A set of conversations.
A set of tradeoffs.
A set of numbers she does not look away from.

And maybe most importantly, it is something she built long before she had the horse life she has now.

Like many of us, she grew up hearing a sentence that every horse girl knows in some form:

“You better make a lot of money when you grow up if you want to afford this on your own.”

It is said jokingly, sometimes lovingly, sometimes with warning, sometimes with a kind of exhausted truth only horse parents understand.

But for some girls, that sentence lands differently.

It becomes a prophecy.

Or maybe an instruction.

I know the feeling of getting on my horse, and feeling tight with inner criticism or burdensome expectation. Maybe someone said something to me before I got on, and I unconsciously feel like I need to prove myself on that ride. Maybe I’m feeling that I’m not good enough that day and so I’m hoping that that ride is going to prove to myself that the opposite is true.

Truth be told, my horse has no idea that any of that is going on in my head. As humans, our minds can be our greatest gift and our greatest curse.

I know the feeling of being embarrassed, watched, judged, frustrated, overwhelmed, and suddenly much less kind or thoughtful than I want to be or know to be.

I know what it feels like to make a mistake, realise I’m being watched and then getting even more overwhelmed, more agitated and more shut down. Meanwhile, my horse is wondering why my shoulders are up by my ears and my body is as tense as a board.

I know the feeling of wanting the ride to go one way and feeling my body harden and my lungs freeze when my horse has other plans.

I am not proud of every version of myself my horses have met over the years.

And maybe that is why we need to talk about anger, frustration and dysregulation in the saddle with more honesty than we ever have.

Because the truth is, every single person who has spent enough time around horses knows their own version of these experiences.

I have interviewed and worked with thousands of respected horsemen and women and not one of them has said that they are without regret. I have actually said on the podcast, that if you ever meet someone in the horse world, who claims they are without emotional fault, moral mistake or regret over decisions made with horses, run far, far away from that person.

Why?

Because the wisest horsemen have shown me that the path of great depth and development as a rider comes with regret.

We do the best we can with what we know, until we know better, then we do better.

Then we do better.

That means we have to say goodbye to the rider, horseman, and human we were before and welcome a new version of ourselves, which means we see the limitations of past beliefs and past actions and embrace the truth of past ignorances and past mistakes.

We MUST allow ourselves to shed our skin, to evolve, to deepen, to know better and do better but in order to do that we must accept, acknowledge and forgive our past selves.

Those past moments where…

The heat rises
The jaw sets
The hand gets sharper.
The breath shortens.

The story forms quickly in the mind.

He knows better.
She is being difficult.
He is embarrassing me.
She is taking advantage.
This should not be happening.
I paid too much for this.
I have worked too hard for this.
Everyone is watching.

And then, sometimes, we stop responding to our horse and start reacting to everything the horse has come to represent.

That is where things get dangerous.

Not only for the rider. For the horse.

Outrage is not prevention

The horse world has become very good at outrage.

A video surfaces.
A rider loses it.
A horse is hit, yanked, chased, kicked, spun, punished, or frightened.
The comments go viral.
The statements begin.
Everyone has something to say.

And often, they should.

Harmful behavior toward horses is not acceptable. Full stop.

But if all we do is react after the explosion, we are not protecting horses as much as we think we are. We are simply waiting for the next explosion, the next controversy, the next horse welfare sensation.

That is the piece we do not like to look at. Because anger in the saddle rarely begins in the moment the public sees. The moment we see is often the rupture.

The visible break.

The place where pressure, shame, money, exhaustion, entitlement, fear, and emotional dysregulation finally land on the horse’s body and if people are watching then someone gets out their phone and the video gets shared on social media.

But the horse world does not simply punish anger. It produces the conditions for anger, then acts shocked when anger appears.

Explanation is not exoneration

I want to be very clear here.

Understanding why someone became dysregulated does not excuse what they did while dysregulated.

Explanation is not exoneration.

A horse should not pay for a rider’s stress.
A horse should not pay for a trainer’s business model.
A horse should not pay for a client’s expectations.
A horse should not pay for a parent’s investment.
A horse should not pay for a bad day, a thin margin, a bruised ego, a missed distance, a disappointing score, or a dream that is starting to fall apart.

Accountability matters. Consequences matter. Welfare matters.

But if we genuinely care about changing the industry, we have to be willing to ask harder questions than simply: Who is good and who is bad?

We have to ask: What kind of system keeps producing riders whose anger becomes the horse’s burden? What kind of system produces an environment where a confused or unwilling horse produces a violent or unkind rider.

The pressure cooker

This industry is mentally exhausting in ways that are hard to explain unless you have lived inside it.

There is pressure to win.

Pressure to keep winning.
Pressure to keep clients happy.
Pressure to prove the horse was worth it.
Pressure to keep owners satisfied.
Pressure to survive financially.
Pressure to perform while exhausted.
Pressure to keep a public image intact.
Pressure to ride through fear.
Pressure to keep going when your nervous system is beyond fried.

And then we put people on horses.

Living, breathing, feeling animals. Animals with their own fear, tension, confusion, memory, sensitivity, and thresholds. Animals who cannot speak our language.

Animals who are constantly responding to the emotional state of the human sitting on top of them or standing next to them. And somehow we expect the whole thing to hold.

Until it doesn’t.

Money changes the emotional contract

This is where the conversation connects directly to what I have been writing about regarding wealth, status, and economics in the horse world. The problem is not simply that some people have money and some people do not.

The problem is that money changes what people believe the horse owes them and the relationship we have with the moment.

At the top of the sport, a horse can become an investment, a podium prospect, a resale opportunity, a syndicate asset, a symbol of status.

For professionals, a horse can become business survival.

For amateurs, a horse can become the emotional center of an enormous financial sacrifice.

Different positions.

Same danger.

The horse becomes responsible for human pressure.

I spent too much for this not to work.
This client expects results.
This owner needs to see progress.
This horse has to sell.
This horse has to win.
This horse has to prove I made the right choice.
This horse has to make me feel like I belong here.

Bu, we have heard this statement before, our horses do not know what they cost or how much we bought them for..

They do not know whether we spent one dollar or one million dollars.

They do not know the board bill.
They do not know the resale plan.
They do not know the entry fee.
They do not know the owner’s expectations.
They do not know the social pressure.
They do not know that we are embarrassed.
They do not know that our identity is attached to the outcome.

They only know how we treat him. That is the part we have to come back to.

Again and again and again and again.

And again.

Objectification makes anger easier

This is why I keep returning to objectification as one of the core wounds of the horse world. Because violence becomes easier when the horse has already been made less real.

It is harder to take your rage out on some-one.

It is easier to take it out on some-thing.

And too often, our language has already prepared the groundwork for this.

That horse is a machine.
A freak.
A project.
A resell.
An investment.
A problem.

That horse is naughty, difficult one, a waste of money.
That horse that “should” know better.

I have heard those phrases more times than I can count and every one of those phrases can create distance. And distance is dangerous.

Because once the horse becomes an object, correction can slide into punishment. Pressure can become force. Frustration can become violence.

And the rider can still tell themselves a story where they are the reasonable one.

The horse was being bad.
The horse made me do it.
The horse knows better.
The horse can’t get away with that.
The horse needed to learn.

That is cognitive dissonance at work.

Most people in the horse world believe they love horses. And many of them do; I would argue the vast majority do. So, when their behavior harms a horse, the mind has to make the story bearable.

Our minds cannot easily say:

“I harmed a horse I love.”

So instead, we say:

“The horse deserved it. The horse asked for it. The horse knows better.”

This is the most dangerous story in the horse world.

Emotional regulation is horsemanship

We teach people to ride.

We teach position.
We teach aids.
We teach timing.
We teach distances.
We teach contact.
We teach collection.
We teach courses, tests, transitions, lead changes, and release.

But where do we teach people how to regulate themselves before they become unhelpful to the horse?

Where do we teach a rider to notice:

My face is too hot right now. My body is tightening from anger.
My hand is no longer fair.
My frustration is clouding my juddgement.
My ego is in charge.
My horse is no longer the problem — my nervous system is.

That should not be considered soft, weak, unskilled or woo-woo.. That should not be considered optional.

THAT is horsemanship.

A regulated rider is not a weak rider. A regulated rider is a safer rider. A more ethical rider. A more refined rider. A wise rider.

A rider that has a greater chance at long-term progress, connection and success. A rider with enough self-awareness to know when to pause, breathe, get off, hand the horse to someone else, scratch the class, end the lesson, or say:

I am not in a state to be fair to this horse right now.

That sentence needs to become normal in barns now. Better yet, can we create a horse world when the rider can start to identify the factors in their own life that might be producing toxic, contradictory conditions to GOOD horsemanship.

This reflection and introspection must be respected. It must be modeled by professionals. It must be taught to children. It must become part of every conversation about welfare.

This is where we all can affect change.

Because if we want a horse-centered sport, we cannot only ask whether horses are fit to perform for us.

We have to ask whether we are fit to ride horses; whether we are regulated enough to make decisions, to step into the ring, to challenge ourselves in the saddle today.

The bystander problem

There is another uncomfortable part of this. Often, before someone publicly explodes, people around them know something is off.

The rider is burned out. The trainer is increasingly reactive.
The junior is under too much pressure.
The professional is overworked, exhausted.
The amateur is ashamed, broke or defeated..
The parent is pushing.
The owner is demanding.
The barn is tense.
The horse is showing signs that something is not okay.

But nobody wants to say it.

Nobody wants to tell a friend they seem overwhelmed. Nobody wants to tell a client they need to step back. Nobody wants to tell a trainer their behavior is becoming unsafe. Nobody wants to risk the social consequences of intervening before things go sideways.

So we wait.

We wait until the horse absorbs it. We wait until someone films it. We wait until the internet can do the job the community did not do sooner.

Then suddenly everyone has something to say.

That is not prevention. That is cleanup.

If we care about horses, we have to get braver before the public rupture.

Not crueler.

Braver.

Not judgier.

More honest.

More willing to say, in a kind (NON-judgemental way):

Why don’t you take a breath.
It’s okay to get off.
This is escalating, let’s take a pause.
This is not fair to the horse. I’ve been there, why don’t you take a walk.
You are not okay right now.
Let me hold the horse, you seem like you are having a hard day.
Let’s stop here.
This is not the moment to keep pushing, tomorrow is another day. .

That kind of intervention should be seen as protection, kindness, consideration, friendship, mentorship and horsemanship.

The horse is having an experience too

This may be the part some riders forget most.

The horse is also experiencing the moment.

He feels the pressure.
She feels the tension.
He feels the confusion.
She feels the fear.
He feels the frustration.
She feels the rider’s body change.

Horses are expected to perform in environments they did not choose, under people whose language they do not speak, while being asked to tolerate our nerves, our flaws, our timing, our emotions, our ambitions, and our public embarrassment.

And then, when they communicate in the only language they have — through their body, their resistance, their reaction, their refusal, their tension, their shutdown — we often call it bad behavior. We shut it down and we do NOT listen.

But we are ignoring the information.

What if the horse is not being difficult? What if the horse is having difficulty?

That distinction should change everything.

We ask horses to tolerate us constantly. But how often do we ask whether we are tolerating them?

Are they allowed to have a bad day? Are they allowed to feel overwhelmed?

Are they allowed to feel confused? Are they allowed to say, “I do not understand”?

Are they allowed to say, “I cannot”? Are they allowed to be animals?

Or do we only honor their communication when it is convenient? When it is in alignment with our own goals, our own expectations. .

The better question

When someone harms a horse, accountability matters.

But the better question is not only: Why are people angry at this rider?

The better question is: What inside that rider became dysregulated enough to react that way in the first place?

And behind that: What kind of industry trains people to ignore those warning signs?

What kind of barn culture normalizes pushing through? What kind of economy makes a horse feel like a financial emergency?

What kind of sport rewards outcomes while ignoring the emotional state of the horse and rider who produced them?

What kind of community waits until the explosion before intervening?

Those are harder questions that speak to deeper, systemic problems that do not offer us, and our dopamine seeking brains, a quick answer or quick solution.

But they are the questions that might actually protect horses.

Before your next ride

So maybe the next revolution in horsemanship is not only more knowledge. Maybe it is more honesty.

Before your next ride, ask: Is my nervous system safe for my horse today?

Not perfect.

Safe.

Am I able to listen?
Am I able to pause?
Am I able to feel frustration without turning it into punishment?
Am I able to notice when my ambition is getting louder than my horse?
Am I able to stop before I become unfair?

If the answer is no, that does not make us bad or less than. It makes us human and responsible for choosing differently.

We can get off.
We can take a walk.
We can hand graze.
We can go for a halter hack.
We can breathe.
We can ask for help.
We can end early.
Change the plan.
Protect our horse.

Because our horses do not know what they cost. They do not know what we hoped this ride would prove. They only know who we become when things do not go our way.

And that, more than any ribbon, result, sale price, or public statement, is the measure of our horsemanship.

Outrage is easy after the damage is done.

Prevention asks much more of us and it asks us to do something that no one will applaud. No one will celebrate you when you prevent a problem, they may judge you if you don’t but if you practice self-awareness, and take the more progressive path, it is doubtful anyone will see the issue that was prevented, only you will.

It asks us to tell the truth sooner, to settle for a quieter glory, a more subtle victory.

It asks us to regulate ourselves before the horse has to absorb what we refuse to face. It asks us to build a horse world where anger is not ignored until it becomes violence.

And it asks us to remember that the horse underneath us is not the place our pressure gets to go.

They are not the invoice. They are not the dream. They are not the proof. They are a living being.

And they deserve us when our nervous system does not make them pay for a world they never agreed to carry.
