What I’m Practicing. Recently, I had a long conversation with my dear friend about a Substack article she wrote. Our conversation meandered from the power of prayer to the kind of lives we want to lead (versus the lives we once thought we wanted), spirituality versus religion to internal vs. external fulfillment. Since that conversation, I’ve been implementing “I Am” statements into my morning journaling practice to test some of the concepts we discussed. The practice is as simple and straightforward as it sounds. I take a pen, a journal, and a vision for my future, then put it to paper. I’ve since filled pages with statements like: I am healthy and kind to my body. I am a voracious reader. I am financially secure and wise. I am diligent and detail-oriented. I am graceful during learning opportunities.

And in between those morning and nightly entries, a shift has taken place. I wouldn’t say that I believe all of those things (yet), but I am treating myself as if I am all of those things. The practice has given me a tighter focus and the ability to maintain a higher standard despite creeping doubt, fear, or exhaustion. The “I Am” statements have also helped me filter through what is authentic to me versus what society or other external pressures may expect or encourage.

It’s worth noting that I have to put pen to paper to glean the full effect of “I Am” statements. Typing just doesn’t do the trick, but I’ve always found this to be true of journaling.

What I’m Reading. Just finished [devoured, actually] A Land Remembered, a stunning multi-generational novel that captures approximately 100 years of Florida history through the lens of the fictional MacIvey family. As a Floridian, the novel broadened my appreciation for Florida’s rich history and even richer biodiversity. Yet, the novel also left me with a profound sense of sadness for a land that now only exists in disjointed, disconnected bits and pieces of state parks and forests. A heavy read? Yes. Impossible to put down? Also yes.

I needed something a little lighter after such a heavy (albeit incredible) hitter. Finishing up Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara, former General Manager at Eleven Madison Park. The book has such utility beyond the F&B and hospitality industries, and I’ve learned a lot about management and client relationships.

What’s Inspiring Me. Zara’s Pre-Fall Campaign really inspired me with its punchy primary colors and patterns. Bright blue, classic stripes, cheery red, and even a sprinkling of bright green. To me, the hero pieces felt like an elegant extension of an Americana summer, perfect for pairing with key summer purchases for an easy transition into a new season. Which, let’s face it, is how dressing should be. It’s not normal to purchase a whole new wardrobe each season.

What I’m Working On. After a summer of overcommitting, I’m enjoying the slower pace. Actually, I’m not. It’s driving me nuts. So nuts, in fact, I ordered 12,000 pounds of pebbles to put in our garden. To be clear, our garden doesn’t need 12,000 pounds of pebbles. So now, I am having a meltdown have a project! To keep me motivated, I’m ordering seeds for Fall (Zone 9B for inquiring minds) and browsing Garden Heir’s Labor Day Sale.

What I’m Buying. In addition to a lifetime supply of Bahama rock? Quite a few items from Poshmark. My go-to biker short (Outdoor Voice’s 5” Warm-Up Short — on sale in gray here!) has been sold out in black, so I ordered a few pairs on Poshmark. P.S. these bikers are made with OV’s original Textured Compression fabric and super sculpting and durable. I’ve also ordered another pair of my favorite Pistola’s High Rise Eli Barrel and browse Poshmark daily for the pieces and brands I love.

30A is no longer the well-kept secret of my early childhood. It’s no longer a poorly kept secret. But much of its heart and soul remain: a slow little beach town that loves its locals and its Caribbean-quality ocean.

I could write for days and share dozens of photos, but I finally stopped myself and hit publish long before I was ready. So, please keep checking back for updates to this local-loving guide.

WHEN to VISIT //

While our little scenic highway is increasingly a year-round destination, it’s busiest during Spring Break (March 1 through mid-April, depending on the year), Memorial Day through Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas through New Year’s.

Spring // March - Memorial Day // If your dates are flexible, avoid Spring Break unless can stay for an extended period (two weeks or more), since both weather and crowds can be unpredictable. The weather improves as spring wears on, making April popular for weddings and bachelorettes. For the best balance of weather and thinner crowds, aim for May before Memorial Day.

Summer // Memorial Day - Labor Day // Quintessential time to visit 30A. Fourth of July is the busiest week, but also one of the most special. Book accommodations well in advance to secure the best rental selection and rates.
Local Tip: As kids start school, 30A slows down. While it’s peak heat and humidity, mid-to-late August (pre-Labor Day) is a good time to visit.

Fall // September - November // Admittedly, September is better classified as late summer. However, once October rolls around… It’s one of the most magical times of the year. Expect sunny days in the 70s, plus a full lineup of festivals. View the South Walton Events Calendar here…

Winter // Thanksgiving - February // Some days it’s 70 and sunny, some days it’s freezing. That’s Florida. But there’s always a white Christmas if you wander down to the beach. Speaking of, December is buzzing for the holidays, but January and February are a bit quieter save for 30A Songwriters Fest.

For the ideal 30A experience, I recommend Rosemary, Alys (pronounced “Alice”), Seaside, or Grayton. Each has a distinct personality and — with the exception of Grayton, which, unlike the others, is a more organic neighborhood than planned community — offers the strongest walkability, amenities, and deeded beach access.

Raw & Juicy // Alys Beach & Grayton Locations // Locally Owned // Very healthy, very good. The Alys and Grayton locations are quite different, but both deliver on the promise of garden-led fare. While popular among visitors, Raw & Juicy is also a local favorite. From the Thursday Farmers Market, featuring local makers and growers, to the R&J Wellness Collective and seasonal Sourdough Pizza Nights, Raw & Juicy is deeply rooted in the community.

Black Bear // Grayton & Seaside Locations // Locally Owned // The best breads and pastries on 30A. If I’m feeling indulgent, I get an almond croissant and an iced Golden Goddess. And a sugar cookie (or two, for luck).

Donut Hole // Destin, Santa Rosa Beach, Inlet Beach Locations // Locally Owned // Order a dozen and make sure at least one is a blueberry cake donut. Or, sit down for breakfast (served all day) before you walk away with sweets for the week.

Blue Mountain Beach Bakery // Blue Mountain Beach // Locally Owned // Locals will remember when it was La Loba and had to-die-for granola. Their pastries are still to-die-for, and their gluten-free options are hard to beat. A go-to for lunch as well.

Modica Market // Seaside // Locally Owned // I’ll skip the lines at the airstreams and head for Modica to grab goodies from their prepared food section or assemble an on-the-fly cheese board for a picnic on the green.

Seagrove Village Market Café // Seagrove // Locally Owned // Deep fried since 1949. While there’s a new location in Watersound Origins, I prefer the original in Seagrove. And although it’s been updated — spiffed up to keep pace with the town’s growth — the shrimp basket and sweet tea are just as I remember.

O-Ku // Alys Beach // Not locally owned, but a very welcome addition to the culinary scene nonetheless.

If The Bay is too busy, we walk across the street to one of Jim Shirley’s other restaurants, North Beach Social (essentially a more laid-back version of The Bay, sans-sushi) or Farm & Fire (pizza and sushi).

Sugar Shak // Rosemary Beach // The way we begged to go to Sugar Shak when we were little. Multiple times a day… Simply put, it’s a must-visit for kids (or kids at heart).

Tennis at Rosemary Beach Racquet Club // A biased recommendation! Not only did I grow up at these courts and meet my husband here circa-2005, but said husband has worked here as a pro for years. I suppose that also makes this recommendation very well-informed. Open to the public (no membership or Rosemary stay required) anyone can enjoy their clinics, lessons, or courts — just be sure to book ahead during high season! PCB Water Sports Dolphin or Sunset Tour // Locally-Owned // The beach is amazing, but being on the water is better. Captain Cameron and his team are fabulous and will treat you to the best time on the water out of Panama City. See what I mean here.

Walk Grayton Beach State Park // 30A is surrounded by thousands of acres of state forest and park. While Grayton Beach State Park is an easy favorite for its beach access, it also has incredible trails. Take a morning to explore.

TRAVEL NOTES //

Beach Access // South Walton’s famous beaches are a mix of private, public, and state parks. To ensure easy, unfettered access, I recommend renting in Rosemary, Alys, Watersound, and Seaside. However, if you’d prefer to stay outside of one of these communities, I recommend opting for a gulf-front rental (many include deeded beachfront), triple checking with your host about the community’s beach setup, and referencing nearby public and/or state park beaches. Golf Carts & LSV // A touchy topic amongst locals. If you do choose to rent one, note that Walton County Sheriff’s Department strictly enforces seatbelt and occupancy laws, as well as the roads on which golf carts and LSVs are allowed to operate. Rosemary, Alys, Kaiya, and Seaside also prohibit them within their communities. Don’t forget to turn your blinkers off and keep an eye on the number of cars behind you.

Beach Safety //

• Clean, Dark, Flat // Please help us keep our beaches a safe place for sea turtles to nest by removing all of your belongings, throwing away your trash, and filling in any holes you dig during your beach day!

• Flag System // Please keep yourself, others, and our lifeguards safe by checking the beach flags and knowing your limits. A double red flag means the water is closed and you will be ticketed for entering the water. This is not to ruin your vacation, but to keep you and first responders safe!

Funny, the things we inherit from our parents. Some are obvious: noses, eye color. Others are invisible yet so innate they can only be explained by a shared sequence of genes. It’s in the shape of my legs and my love of crystalline blue water that I know I am my mother’s child. Near or in it, we are both most at peace.

So, no discussion needed when she suggested Grand Cayman as the destination for our annual girls’ trip. My mother and the island had history. In a different lifetime, she’d frequented Grand Cayman. Over forty years later, she could return to the island on her own terms with her daughter and a dear friend.

We call this annual girls’ trip “Girl Summer Camp.” It’s a time to rest, restore, reconnect, and, by the end, remember — and yearn for — that which we love about our homes. It’s a few days of being missed by dependents (husbands, animals, and children); of walking everywhere and going to bed early; of sharing and listening. And it’s something I highly recommend and deeply treasure. So much so, apparently, that I took about 12 photos the entire time I was there. Oh well!

WHEN to GO //

The first week of May was perfection, but this is coming from a Florida girl to whom humidity is a delight. In fact, it was more humid back home than it was in Grand Cayman. So plan according to your heat and humidity tolerance!

HOW to GET THERE //

Fly to Owens Roberts International Airport (GCM), which is the most modern Caribbean airport (I’m sure you can understand why). Customs was air-conditioned, though slow due to the number of concurrent arrivals. We’d arranged for transportation ahead of time through the hotel, but a taxi would’ve been easy to secure.

When flying out, we were advised to allot two hours, but found that to be far more time than we needed. Duty-free is limited to one jewelry store, liquor, and perfume and, in my opinion, can be skipped.

WHERE to STAY //

We stayed at The Ritz Carlton, which, initially, was everything one might expect a Ritz-Carlton to be: expansive and well outfitted. A bit labyrinthine, the resort is best suited to travelers with no intention of leaving the property — which makes sense in more remote or unfamiliar destinations.

Unfortunately, we can’t speak much to the food and beverage program, as we opted for the Club Lounge experience, which — though touted as an elevated offering — felt very much like a downgrade. The Lounge was, at least, quieter than the rest of the hotel, which was hosting a succession of corporate retreats.

Overall, The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman felt stuck. Obvious attempts to keep pace with neighboring resorts had been made, but those efforts were undermined around nearly every corner. Take, for example, the Saint June poolside bar. Cloistered by tropical foliage and outfitted in country-club green upholstery, cabana stripes, and brass finials, it’s distinctly sexy. But turn around from the bar and you’ll find Croc-clad pool attendants serving frozen push pops from insulated lunch bags.

And the whole thing came crumbling down after one of our group was sidelined for 24 hours with gastrointestinal troubles. Undoubtedly that experience — and the likely origins of such troubles — colored our take on The Ritz Grand Cayman. But, I can’t help but think that — given The Ritz’s legendary Gold Standard discretionary $2,000 Guest Empowerment fund — we could’ve left a bit more… empowered. Rather, we were offered a bag of pretzels, one tour credit, and an interview with security.

Here’s where I’d stay instead…

PALM HEIGHTS // Cut off from the bustling Seven Mile Beach Road by a dense, towering wall of tropical foliage, Palm Heights is a masterclass in merging Slim Aarons nostalgia with modern sensibilities. The carefully manufactured machinations of a corporation like Marriott or Kimpton it is not. Rather, Palm Heights is the serendipitous Caribbean daydream of IYKYK creative director Gabriella Khalil where travertine, stacked 4x4 subway tiles, Willy Guhl, and all shades of sunshine yellow rule. Sure, it betrays some pretense — with all likelihood stay at Palm Heights because you want to be a part of that world — but every detail has been so meticulously considered that even a quick visit for dinner is transportive. On that note, Tillies is a can’t miss. Order the Fish Milanese. )

WHAT to DO //

STINGRAY CITY // Our tour was organized by the concierge at The Ritz with Red Sail Sports, which offered a fun, educational experience. In short, I highly recommend both Red Sail Sports and the Stingray Tour, which also includes snorkel and starfish experiences. Stingray City is certainly touristy — the Grand Cayman government estimates each stingray is worth upwards of $500,000 KYD given the amount of revenue the experience drives — but it’s well worth the relatively small crowd. I’ll get back to you on whether kissing a stingray actually gets you seven years of good luck.

WHERE to SHOP //

LABEL C // Interior Designer Cynthia Tranel’s boutique filled with an intentional selection of beautiful bedding, accessories, and art. Think: relaxed, effortless, and timeless. Here, I picked up a “silver” trays used at Tillies.

DOLORES // Located at Palm Heights. Worth a spin to see interesting pieces for home, closet, and apothecary.

KASSETTE // We didn’t make it here, but looks well worth the trip.

KIRK MARKET // Stock up on reef safe sunscreen and snacks, etc.

AMÉ // Located at Camana Bay, which is a nice stroll. Expect brands like Rails, Flamingo Estate, Farm Rio, Hunter Bell, and the like.

WHERE to EAT //

Were we to do our dining over again, here’s how we’d do it…

TILLIES // For a sunset dinner. Our dinner here was incredible. The rolls are to die for and the Fish Milanese was unreal. I would pass on their Birthday Sundae (I was imagining birthday cake-flavored whereas it was vanilla soft serve and chocolate gelato with cake bits) and opt for the Miso Sundae or Toasted Coconut Tres Leches.

PARADISE PIZZA // For a casual dinner or dining in.

MRS. PIPER’S KITCHEN & GARDEN // We ate here for lunch and it was lovely! Very cute.

HAPPY DAYS COFFEE // A morning walk to Happy Days for coffee.

TAIKUN // At The Ritz for sushi.

TRAVEL NOTES //

Traveling to Grand Cayman is very straightforward. The island felt incredibly safe, connected, and developed. In fact, I felt like I was in South Florida rather than a foreign country.

Quoted in KYD // Most items at resorts — from food to products — are quoted in KYD and charged in USD. The USD is weaker compared to the Cayman Dollar. At time of publishing, it was $1.25 USD to $1.00 KYD.

WHAT to PACK //

As with most places, Grand Cayman is what you make it. We made it a restorative, restful experience, so no “going out tops” for us. That said, Grand Cayman offered ample opportunities to dress up should you choose. And for those who are curious, it was giving Miami-light rather than Palm Beach or Harbour Island. I wore resort and summer staples, which you can find here.

Like many travel fixations, my interest in Harbour Island began in photographs: first stirred by Slim Aarons’ sun-drenched scenes of the Seventies, later cultivated by the enduring (and enterprising) island aesthetics of India Hicks and Amanda Lindroth. For years, Harbour Island existed in that languid mythology — pink sand, wicker, and palms — until a dear friend called with plans for a spontaneous visit in a few days’ time.

For a someone who’s long considered themselves a homebody, it seemed as mad to say no as to go. So, off we went…

WHEN to GO // Shoulder Season // Mid-April through May and October through early November offer lower rates, quieter beaches, and ideal temps. While we technically visited during high-season (mid-December through April), our midweek visit in February felt perfect: no crowds, warm daytime weather… Although for Florida girls, the water and evenings were a bit chilly.

HOW to GET THERE // Living several hours’ drive from major travel hubs, I’m used to long travel days, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover how easy it is to get to the Bahamas. Our 6:00 AM flight was worth the early wake-up call: by 11:00 AM, we were sitting on the hotel veranda, mocktail in hand.

Editor’s Note: We did not book any private transportation in advance and had no trouble or hiccups in getting to Harbour Island. My impression is that booking ahead would be more stressful.

• Fly into North Eleuthera (ELH) via Miami with American Airlines, via Atlanta with Delta, or via Fort Lauderdale with Silver Airways. As of 2026, customs is in a one-room building and your proximity to the front of the plane will determine how quickly pass through.

• From ELH take a 5-minute taxi to the Port (about $7 per person).

• From the Port take a 7-minute water taxi to the Government Docks (about $5 per person)

• Take a taxi from the Government Docks to your hotel or resort ($7+, depends on where you’re staying).

• On our flight out, we left two hours early (more than enough time) which meant we got seats in the very limited ELH departures “lounge” (i.e. a two-room building packed with chairs but mercifully air-conditioned).

WHERE to STAY // Ocean View Club // Tucked in above the island’s characteristic pink sands, Ocean View Club is an eclectic, salt-worn hotel free of the pretense of neighboring resorts. It’s the sort of place that insists upon bare feet, doors thrown wide open, and keeping track of your own bar tab.

Defined by an amusing combination of thoughtful touches and a benign indifference to mainland comforts Ocean View Club — in its own words — promises nothing. This is not the latest private equity acquisition carefully engineered to simulate rustic charm until the precise moment you need another cocktail. Here, you get your own drinks.

The pleasures here are specific. Malin + Goetz toiletries and Supergoop! sunscreen by the gallon. Stacks of dogeared beach reads and backgammon. Exquisite farm fresh fare. Other comforts arrive — or don’t — in their own time. The air is thick, the staff unhurried. The sound of waves a lull that makes time move in unbelievable slow, yet wonderfully welcome pace.

In other words, Ocean View Club is for the traveler who likes to linger: over lunch, for a chat with Ms. Mae, and in the rhythms of Briland life.

WHAT to DO // Besides lay around on the beach, as you’re meant to? We enjoyed exploring neighboring resorts and Dunmore Town, stocking up on steps and inspiration.

Our days were unhurried, spent in leisurely pursuit of sun and snacks. Dinners were the dénouement. Speaking of which, I highly recommend hiring a boat to Ocean View Club’s sister property, The Other Side, for dinner and drinks.

If you’re into design, The Dunmore, designed by Amanda Lindroth, is worth a visit, as is the boutique.

TRAVEL NOTES //

Bring Cash // I recommend bringing small notes ($1s, $5s, $10s) for taxis and tips—for example, the gentlemen who load and unload bags from the water taxis.

Bring a Water Bottle // Or stock up at Pigly Wigly (yes, that’s how they spell it). Nothing — including water — is cheap on Harbour Island. Expect to pay around $14 for a bottle at restaurants. And no, the tap water is not recommended.

Make Reservations // Reservations are king on Harbour Island, even during shoulder season. When it comes to dinner, don’t expect to pop in or change an existing reservation.

WHAT to PACK // From the interiors to the sartorial selections of fellow sun-seekers, Harbour Island was a pastel and shell-encrusted fever dream. Even I — a devout believer in the capsule wardrobe — left the island inspired and eager to branch out into (gasp!) statement pieces. The fashion was, in the simplest terms, fun. And while I felt little pressure to dress up — a pareo, bathing suit, and sandals sufficed — there was ample opportunity to partake in the panache of resort wear, from breakfast to dinner, should the mood strike.

1. VINTAGE COASTAL SHELL MIRROR // I semi-recently attempted a shell encrusted mirror. I say attempted because I developed a respiratory infection from the glue I was using and couldn’t finish — even using a (pause here for laughs) respirator. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is, pay whatever the artist is asking for a shell encrusted mirror. They suffered for this art.

2. SARDINE & FISHBONE EARRINGS // Not usually one for costume-y jewelry, but these are so fun — especially for beach trips!

3. WANSTEAD LANTERN // Let me brag for a second. I found this in a local thrift store for $150. Haven’t run so fast to grab it since that stupid presidential mile test in elementary school. Finally found it a home this week and can’t wait to share!

4. ARACELI SHIRRED COTTON MINI DRESS // Saw this in the Dunmore’s shop on Harbour Island, which is, like the resort, impeccably curated. It also had shockingly great sales?

5. COSMO PANT // As I luxuriate in barrel jeans and wide leg slacks, I rack my brains, trying to discern how skinny jeans could’ve had us in such a chokehold.

6. BOOK STACK // Arje’s Sunshine Book Stack is, sadly, sold out. But I’ve sourced all the books to recreate the stack here. Note: these are almost all used copies.

7. DYLAN CARDIGAN // A cardigan to take you into spring and, if you’re lucky to live somewhere temps drop in the evenings, summer.

GRASSCLOTH ICE BUCKET // One of my dearest friends curates vintage and coastal inspired pieces and, on a recent jaunt around a out-of-town thrift shops and antique stores, sourced an incredible mid-century modern grasscloth ice bucket for me. I’m not parting with mine — using in a cute little short term rental (coming soon!) — but here is the exact same Drift & Co. found for me!

CADENCE STARTER SET // Really struggling with my skin right now and it hurt to leave my very expensive, but very effective medicated cleanser at home (didn’t have time to get a travel size or a travel container and I do not check baggage). I’d been considering a Cadence Capsule System, but this tipped me over the edge and I’m really excited about my Cadence Starter Set. Magnetic, buildable, TSA-compliant, leak-proof, refillable… I’ll use them for aforementioned face wash, medications, jewelry… And keep track with their tiles (also magnetic.).

1. CEILING MEDALLION // A trip to Harbour Island, where every shell has been scooped from the shores and implemented (tastefully, wonderfully, perfectly) into the decor has clearly left me inspired.

2. EYELET BANDANA SCARF // Skipping straight over the product styling on this (I fear I’d be a little too convincing as a milkmaid) I still can’t pass on the eyelet. Tie around your neck instead.

3. KYOTO PANT // These pull double duty quite naturally: pack them as a swimsuit cover up and, when you’re back home, wear them with a white tee (and the Taylor Cardigan over your shoulder) on weekends.

4. LINEN SET // A Top & Skort too cute to pass up. Perfect for spring (break) and summer travels.

5. TAYLOR CARDIGAN in COTTON CASHMERE // A hero item in my closet. I wear it at least twice a week, every week: over an exercise dress (the original, duh), over my shoulders with jeans, or with a midi skirt.

6. THE RUSH HOUSE ORIGINAL RUG // I write about this rug a lot — almost as much as you see it used across interiors (both high and low). It’s natural, beautiful, handmade, and as such, very well-priced. But what tips me over the edge is that its construction lends itself to easy customization and, more importantly, pets. With a spontaneously planned island trip approaching, this edit is inspired by visions of languid days spent crisping on pink sands — sunscreen be damned, we’re catching up on Vitamin D.

1. HOLIDAY: THE BEST TRAVEL MAGAZINE THERE EVER WAS // My new-ish travel souvenir is a coffee table book. And now that I’m thinking about it, I should really commit and write on the inside cover the date, destination, and favorite memories of the travel.

2. THE JUNE PINK PEARL CHOKER // A DONNI. original! Love the baroque pearls and believe this piece can work equally well on the beach as it can in every day life.

3. JULIA BIKINI in BLUSH // Hunza G are my favorite bikinis! Love the one-size-fits-all (so forgiving!). I have friends that report it doesn’t provide adequate support, but unfortunately (fortunately?) I cannot comment on that myself.

4. ANNABEL DRESS // This is a resort-ready dress that promises to be a staple through another long, hot, humid summer.

5. CHIMI 06 SUNGLASSES // I personally prefer dirt cheap sunglasses I can treat like… dirt cheap sunglasses. You know, throw in the bottom of my bag with a key ring that most closely resembles a janitor key ring, sit on, hand to a friend’s baby at dinner so we can continue to gossip in peace, etc. etc. etc. But, these are pretty cute.

18. HAIR AFTER THE SUN // A lightweight cream for shiny locks. Honestly, I just love the ritual of swimming, loading up on a product and brushing into a slicked back bun with a pretty comb.

1. BALADE À BEAULIEU // One of my absolute favorite interior design studios, Island House Interiors, was installing a different paper from a new-to-me panoramic wallpaper designer, Ananbô, earlier this week and I was beyond taken.

2. KYOTO CARPENTER PANTS // Worn down by seeing the Carpenter pant on everyone and bought a pair to see what the fuss was about. I get it now. Runs a big bit (I opted for a small in Leset but usually get a medium in DONNI. for reference).

3. IOWA TOTE BAG // Close enough? Don’t tell the Olsen twins.

4. REVERSIBLE PLAID TRENCH COAT // My husband may call me Inspector Gadget whenever I wear my trench coat (which is at any threat of rain), but that won’t stop me from adding this to my collection.

5. TAION QUILTED MILITARY VEST // Hoping (praying) for vest (versus coat) weather. Didn’t pay attention to what Punxsutawney Phil had to say on the matter, but he’s a Googles what kind of animal he is* groundhog so what the hell does he know about meteorology anyway.

6. GARDEN OBELISK // On a weather adjacent note, slowly prepping my garden for Spring. It’s more of a practice (big emphasis on the practice part) in mindfulness than actual produce. I’m not sure that obelisks are particularly practical for what I have in mind, but they sure are pretty.

7. STEELE CANVAS CART // Big fan of Steele Canvas. You’ll actually see these used at HomeGoods by employees, beat-up, battle sale-worn, and still in perfect functioning condition. The epitome of a workhorse product.

8. MARBLE BISTRO TABLE // A workhorse purchase worth every penny. I’ve had ours out in Florida sun and salt for five-ish years and they only look better as the elements have worn on them. One of the rare instances I recommend purchasing new over spending thousands on antique French bistro tables unless, of course, you have thousands laying around. In which case, may I interest you in this?

9. STAINLESS STEEL WATER DISPENSER // A utilitarian-style water-dispenser that works equally well styled on kitchen counters as it does on bars.

10. UMBRELLA BASKET // Could be converted to an umbrella user if I had one of these in which to store my umbrellas.

11. AGED TERRACOTTA POTS (SET of THREE) // Beautifully pre-patinaed.

12. VEGAN CROC LOAFERS // Loafers are back. Or did they ever leave? Psst. This is a great price point.

Over the past several months, I’ve been reading The Artist’s Way and, dutifully, completing author Julia Cameron’s tasks. Morning Page after Morning Page, the idea of hosting creative women and artists wove itself into my still-sleepy stream of conscious scribbles. The idea became a desire and, once realized as such, became a fear. What a ludicrous thing for little old me to do!

The author of the seminal book on creativity, Julia Cameron, calls that voice the “Inner Critic.” And so, because the idea of hosting an artist’s evening made me so uncomfortable, I had to commit to it. Discomfort, I have learned, is the clearest of signals. Closely followed, of course, by resistance.

Very uncomfortable and very resistant — what if no one showed! what if they thought it was a silly idea! what if people did show and got bored! — I invited artists and creatives around 30A to join me for an evening modeled after Austin, TX’s Creative Ladies Night, a social club that was profoundly impactful on my freelancing career.

Unusually anxious, I reminded myself a universal truth in life and in art: the results are not my responsibility, only the action and effort. But, as with most things, the results surpassed my expectations. It was a beautiful, joyful night that nourished my soul and, I hope, my guests’. Another artist’s evening, it seems, is called for.

Hosting Notes:

I hosted the artist’s evening in a vacant long-term rental I recently renovated, which meant I had the privilege (and burden) of bringing in all the hosting necessities. Here are the hosting heroes…

DROP CLOTHS: I oped for drop cloths rather than tablecloths to cover the 60” folding table I used to anchor the empty space. At $35.99 for two, it was a much more cost effective solution to dress up the space.

SIGNATURE SCENT: I’d just received Flamingo Estate’s Bhutan Subscription Box and used the Four Friends Petite Candles (Copal, Amber, Cedarwood, Myrrh) throughout the home to create continuity. If you don’t have multiples of the same candle, I recommend incense (this is a classic and this is a luxury).

CANDLE LIGHT: Highly recommend starting a collection of tea lights and glass hurricanes for candles. The property I hosted at doesn’t have outdoor lighting and lining the entryway stairs with candles was both necessity (helped guests find the right spot) and photo opp. P.S. Ditch all overhead lighting and rely solely on candles, sconces, and lamps (including the rechargeable ones).

COLLECTED GOODS: I love using real plates, platters, and glassware (versus paper or plastic), and if you start the party with an empty dishwasher, it’s not too much extra work at the end of the evening. And it made my heart so happy to use all of the silver(-plated) serving ware I’ve collected over the years. The same goes for general decor. Because the hosting space was unfurnished, I brought some of my coffee table book and curio collection to create a lived-in look and conversation starters.

1. LITTLE FLAME by DANIJELA KNEZEVIC // Acrylic on canvas and under $2,000. If you’re starting to collect art and aren’t sure where to start (me!), Saatchi Art is an incredible place to start. The site has every price point and really wonderful search tools allowing you to search by medium, style, subject, size, material, and color (down to the tones).

4. RELATIONSHIP STATUS NAPKINS, SET of SIX // A fun tablescape addition for Galentine’s or a bachelorette. For the craftier among us, these could easily be recreated by chain stitching simple white napkins, and I’d add the following: “situationship,” “crushing,” “emotionally unavailable.”

5. BIENAIME JOURS HEUREUX LIQUID SOAP // Always looking for the next “It” soap, which is an inherently ridiculous thing to write. But, this is an up-and-coming (or already here) brand with beautiful packaging.

6. BONBON VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT BOX // Two pounds of the chic Swedish candy brand’s sour and sweet best sellers deliciously packaged in cherry red.

7. THE RIB KICK FLARE // A wear-anywhere pant with dozens of great reviews.

8. THE AL FRESCO LOVE SEAT // Harbor Island vibe, pink sands not included. Speaking of, it’s currently 27-degrees here in North Florida and I need someone to book me a room at Coral Sands Harbor Island stat. This is not the Florida I was promised.

9. ALABASTER WALL SCONCES // A pair of Vintage Italian Murano appliqués in Vistas style… Design-wise these are bolder than anything I’ve ever dreamed up, but I’m envisioning them in a color-washed dressing room.

10. FLABELUS x SEA MARY JANE FLATS // I love this style. So comfy, so lightweight. And, as it turns out, very much a conversation starter.

11. MERIT TINTED LIP OIL // The term “lip oil” is a bit misleading. It’s definitely lip gloss. And it looks just as good on as it does rolling around at the bottom of whatever purse I lose it in. “Pointelle” is my current (only, because let’s be honest it, I own two lip glosses and this is one of them) favorite shade.

12. GOOD BITS BUNDLE // A great gift for the Valentine who loves to entertain.

13. ROSES IN THE GARDEN // For the lady who loves flowers and coffee table books.

14. 14K YELLOW GOLD SINGLE PEARL BRACELET // It’s giving summer.

15. COMET EARRINGS IN MADAGASCAR ROSE // Semi-precious stones (rose quartz and pink rhodolite) for a very precious earring).

1. RUSH HOUSE ORIGINAL // Buildable (and re-buildable for those of us who have pesky pets). No seriously, you can remove tiles and sew in a new section. This is not a rug for which a rug pad is optional, by the way.

2. HARRISON JEANS // Love the look of this fit and wash.

3. COFFMAN HOOK RACK // Stupid easy to install and such a pretty (but practical!) addition.

4. ULTIMATE DRY BRUSH // Working to integrate small moments of self-care into my day (like dry brushing) or exfoliating with WONDER VALLEY Seaweed Body Scrub. It’s not a practice that comes naturally — I like to rush, to be as productive as possible! — but in these small moments I do find a surprising amount of joy.

5. ANTIQUE RUG SCRAP // I’m working on a one-bedroom vacation rental here in Santa Rosa Beach and considering having this made into a bolster pillow or styling it on the back of a chair for a final touch of coastal kitsch.

6. CONTENT FLATS // Birkenstocks but make them more fashion?

7. QUILTED PLAID FLANNEL VEST // A selection from DONNI’s latest drop. It’s great, per usual.

8. BLUE & WHITE PORCELAIN GINGER JAR // The kind of blue and white I’d like to collect. (Yes, I know it’s not actually vintage or antique).

9. WOOL-BLEND KNIT SWEATER // Still on the hunt for the perfect navy sweater and I’m running out of time.

10. DOUBLE WAIST POPLIN PANT // Paired with aforementioned sweater.

11. SET OF TWO DIRECTORS CHAIRS // One of my favorite purchases. I buy a set every time they’re on sale — great for parties, backyard bonfires, budget dining chairs.

13. HANDBALL SPEZIAL SHOES // The fashion girlies may have moved on to a different sneaker du jour, but I’m still loyal to this style.

In the same vein as Week Sixty Two: New Year, Old Things, much of this week’s edit is vintage (the silver tray!), antique (the hall tree!), or handmade (the paper geranium!). Or, in other words, bits and bobs that are imbued with stories, history, and character…

1. Vintage Wool Blanket // For beach bonfires (preferably with CC.BOONE).

2. Vintage 80s Mid-Wash Denim Chore Jacket // Chores but make them chic.

3. Antique Louis Philippe Silvered Giltwood Mirror // This but bigger is at the top of my antique wishlist.

4. Relaxed Cable Knit Sweater // Borrowed from the boys (okay, men’s section, but alliteration — I simply can’t help myself!) of Gap.

5. Handmade Potted Paper Geranium // An incredible piece of artistry to add a little no-maintenance greenery indoors. Perfect for those of us who struggle with indoor plants.

6. Knit Bandana // Really loving bright, juicy cherry red styled with denim. See here and here for what I mean.

7. Pistola Eli Barrel Jean // My current favorite jeans. I am a serial re-wearer (which any therapist would tell you can be traced to my years of wearing a school uniform) and wear these multiple times a week. A few sizes to purchase new are available from REVOLVE or you can purchase on Poshmark here and here. (P.S. 8. LAKUR “Londoner Love” // Was gifted this new-to-me nail polish in December and have been genuinely impressed after thorough testing (think: painting, dish-washing, gardening, and super-gluing). Lovvvvving the nail veil no. 4 right now.

9. Tortoise Bamboo Hall Tree // Do I have a place for this stunner? Absolutely not. Would I let that stop me if I found it in the wild? Absolutely not. Psst! While not antique, this hall tree is so beautiful and almost half the price!

10. James Rib Socks // Think these socks are the ones styled with the Larroude Cypress Boat Shoes (see below) that are living rent free in my head.

11. Silver Plated Serving Tray // I love the detailing on this silver plated tray. It’s really paired back and subtle compared to the overly-ornate finds at thrift stores or estate sales. Speaking of which, those are my go-to places to score silver or silver-plated pieces on the low. Pro Tip: Always carry a magnet with you. It’s not a fool-proof way to tell if things are silver or silver-plated (beyond hallmarks like “925” or “sterling” stamps). If the magnet doesn’t stick or has a slight drag it’s more likely to at least be silver-plated over a non-magnetic base (like brass or copper). Here’s a good article to learn more.

12. Hand-Bound Marbleized Journal // A stunning hand-bound journal that’s the perfect carrot to encourage you to keep up with journaling, a really life-changing practice for me.

13. Framed Herbarium Specimen // Herbariums and shell studies have me in a chokehold. Kind of niche I know.

14. Cypress Boat Shoes // It’s like 2008 is getting a glow-up.
