I looked like every other student trying to figure life out. I had dreams, ideas, unanswered prayers, and more ambition than certainty. I believed something good would happen eventually—I just didn’t know when.

Looking back now, I smile because that version of me had no idea what God was quietly preparing.

This past year wasn’t defined by one big moment. It was a collection of small “yeses.”

Yes to creating even when nobody was watching.

Yes to showing up when I felt unqualified.

Yes to taking my photography more seriously.

Yes to opportunities that scared me.

Somewhere between lectures, editing photos, creating content, serving people, and trying to balance life, I started becoming someone different.

One of the biggest lessons this year taught me is that growth rarely announces itself.

It doesn’t knock on your door and say, “Congratulations, you’re changing.”

It hides in the late nights you almost gave up.

In the projects you nearly abandoned.

In the days when you wondered if your work even mattered.

Then one day you look back and realize you’ve become someone your younger self would’ve been proud to meet.

This year also taught me that influence isn’t always loud.

I had the privilege of serving as the Public Relations Officer for my department, an opportunity I never dreamed about getting throughout my stay in University.

But it came like a dream to me the day I won the election.

Outside school, I continued building my creative journey.

Photography became more than taking beautiful pictures.

It became a way of preserving moments, telling stories, and reminding people that ordinary days can become unforgettable memories.

The camera didn’t just change how I saw people.

It changed how I saw life.

Every frame reminded me that perspective changes everything.

Of course, this year wasn’t perfect.

There were prayers that seemed unanswered.

Plans that didn’t work.

Moments of comparison.

Days I questioned whether I was making enough progress.

But those moments also became teachers.

They reminded me that God is never in a hurry, yet He’s never late.

Today, I don’t think my biggest achievement is a position I hold, the photos I took, or the content I created.

I think my biggest achievement is becoming someone who keeps showing up.

Someone who keeps learning.

Someone who has discovered that purpose is built one ordinary day at a time.

So here’s to August.

Not because it’s magically different from every other month, but because it reminds me that twelve months can completely reshape a person.

To the Emmanuel of last August—

Thank you for believing in dreams you couldn’t yet see.

Thank you for trusting God when the path wasn’t clear.

Thank you for choosing consistency over comfort.

And to the Emmanuel reading this today…

Keep going.

A year from now, you’ll probably look back again and realize that this August was another beginning in disguise.

A letter to the Emmanuel out there!

There’s a question many students ask themselves but hardly say out loud:

“Am I falling behind?”

You open WhatsApp and someone has already finished reading three topics.

You check Instagram and your classmate is celebrating another achievement.

LinkedIn is full of internship announcements.

Someone is learning a new skill.

Someone just got elected.

Someone just won an award.

Before you know it, you’re comparing your behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s highlight reel.

And that’s where the problem begins.

The truth is, many students don’t fail because they’re not smart. They fail because they’re mentally exhausted from trying to live someone else’s timeline.

You start a course because your friend did.

You join a competition because everyone is talking about it.

You feel guilty for resting because someone else is “always grinding.”

Eventually, you’re busy every day but somehow not making progress where it matters most.

Here’s what has helped me—and what might help you too.

1. Stop measuring your journey with someone else’s ruler.
Your goals are different. Your background is different. Your pace will be different too.

2. Choose three priorities, not thirty.
Maybe this semester your focus is passing your exams, improving one skill, and taking care of your health. That’s enough. You don’t have to win every race at once.

3. Celebrate quiet progress.
Finished one chapter? Celebrate it. Submitted an assignment on time? That’s progress. Small wins build confidence.

4. Learn to rest without feeling guilty.
Rest isn’t laziness. It’s maintenance. A tired mind struggles to remember what it studies.

5. Remember why you started.
You’re in school to grow, not to compete with every person you meet.

One day, everyone will leave campus and walk different paths. Some will get jobs first. Some will build businesses. Some will go for postgraduate studies. Some will take longer to figure things out.

None of those timelines determine your worth.

So the next time you feel like you’re behind, pause for a moment and ask yourself:

“Am I becoming better than I was yesterday?”

If the answer is yes, keep going.

Because education isn’t just about graduating before everyone else.

It’s about becoming someone you’re proud of when the graduation gown finally comes off.

Some begin with pure embarrassment. Mine started in a tutorial class.

It was one of those days when everybody was trying to look serious, like we already understood what the tutor was teaching (even though half of us were just praying not to be asked questions 😂).

Then this guy entered my story.

The first encounter? Awkward.

Very awkward.

No dramatic movie scene. No inspirational speech. Just one of those moments that makes you wish the ground could open and swallow you. If you were there, you’d probably laugh till today.

I remember thinking, “Abeg, make this moment just pass.”

Little did I know that the same person I’d rather avoid that day would become the person I couldn’t imagine my department life without.

Funny how life works.

As tutorials came and went, conversations became easier. “Guy, how far?” turned into long discussions after class. Random jokes became inside jokes. Reading together became normal. Before I knew it, we weren’t just course mates anymore, we had become brothers.

You know that one friend who doesn’t have to ask if you’re okay because they already know? That one person who can gist with you, drag you, motivate you, laugh at your mistakes, and still stand beside you when things get rough?

Yeah… that’s him.

Looking back now, I laugh at how everything started. If someone had told me that my closest friend in the department would come from that awkward tutorial encounter, I would have argued with them.

Life has a strange sense of humour.

Sometimes the people who leave the biggest mark on your life don’t arrive with fireworks. They come disguised as awkward moments, uncomfortable conversations, or unexpected encounters.

So if life ever puts you in an awkward situation with someone, no rush to judge the story from the first chapter.

Who knows?

The stranger you’re trying to avoid today might become the friend you’ll never stop appreciating tomorrow.

Life no dey always write friendship with fine handwriting.

Sometimes… e dey start with “Omo, wetin be this?” before it ends with “Guy, I got you.”

And honestly?

I wouldn’t rewrite our first meeting for anything.
