The scene upstairs in the bedroom with Ellen Burstyn has her punched and thrown across the room by her daughter (Linda Blair) expressing her possession. It needed to look like Ellen flew a few feet from the crushing impact of the blow. The actress had a wire strapped to a contraption attached to her back. This rope was to be pulled by a crew member.

During takes she told Friedkin he was pulling her too hard, but he insisted that it had to look real. The story goes that Friedkin told the person to go easier, then quietly signalled him to yank her down just as hard anyway. She slammed into the floor and screamed in pain for real. That scream of pain is what we see in the film.

Linda Blair was 13 years old at the time of filming and experienced something similar, but this time it was due more to a malfunction rather than a person. In the scene on the bed where she thrashes back and forth, she was strapped to a rigging that threw her up and down. During one of the shoots this rigging came loose and because she was screaming, the crew did not realise the problem, thinking it was simply her acting. The back brace slammed into her lower back repeatedly and caused a lower back fracture.

The cursed reputation comes from a series of deaths that took place during and after production of the film. Much has been written about these deaths, which lends this film (like an 80’s classic, Poltergeist) an air of mystery and intrigue.

There are reports of nine people related to the production who died. Including two unnamed persons there was the actor who played Burke Dennings (Jack MacGowran) who died of pneumonia shortly after finishing his scenes. Vasiliki Maliaros, Father Karras’s mother in the film, died during production. An assistant cameraman’s newborn baby. An air conditioning technician who refrigerated the set for the scenes where the room freezes. A young night watchman and Linda Blair’s own grandfather. A building janitor/watchman who was shot and killed. There were two other unnamed individuals who also died during production.

All of this contributes to the reputation of the film. Another cursed film that is at the same time considered by many to be the greatest horror film ever made.

We all know this scene so well, a moment that both shocked and intrigued us the first time we saw it. Tina is asleep and something invisible drags her out of the bed, up the wall, and across the ceiling. It slashes her open as it goes and her boyfriend Rod is right there on the floor and can do nothing but watch. She is dead by the time she comes down.

The scene happens within the first fifteen minutes of the film and it shocks us (probably a warm up for Scream) where you follow a character you think is the main lead (looking at you Barrymore) and Craven kills her before the story has properly started. The ground drops out and you realise that nobody is safe.

Why It Works

It works because it sets up the real terror of the film, that this is a dream creature, something they cannot stop or control. Tina is impossibly dragged up the wall by something invisible. There’s nothing the character can fight and we cannot see the killer, just a girl being torn apart by empty air. Rod is just a few feet away and useless, which is by far worse than if he’d been somewhere else entirely. He’s watching the person he loves dying and he cannot reach her.

Craven knew that the real fear sits with this nothingness, that the imagination is (and was) much more terrifying than the creature we eventually see in the film.

It’s my favourite scene because it is so visceral, and does not pull any punches. Plus it;s one of the most creative kills I’ve seen. If you have been reading Offscreen Screams for a while you’ll know that the inventive side of special effects is a particular favourite of mine.

Behind the Camera

Craven took the idea of the character travelling up the wall and across the ceiling from the musical, In Royal Wedding (1951), Fred Astaire dances up the wall and across the ceiling of his room, and it’s done by building the whole set inside a drum and turning it while the camera turns with it. The floor becomes the wall, which becomes the ceiling. Astaire just walks it, and gravity appears to let go.

Craven wanted that, but with much more blood

Jim Doyle, a mechanical effects man, built the room and it cost around $35,000. This equated to more than half of the entire effects budget. Four stagehands turned it by hand, while everything inside was fixed down, the furniture, the props, and the actor playing Rod, strapped in place so he’d hold still while the world rolled around him. Amanda Wyss, Tina, was left loose, so she appeared to tumble up the wall while the room moved. Craven and his cinematographer Jacques Haitkin shot it strapped into car seats bolted to the wall, spinning along with everything else. Wyss later said the vertigo was real, and that most of her fear on screen wasn’t acting.

They used the same set up for Glen’s death scene, where we get the epic geyser of blood that fires out of Johnny Depp’s bed. According to effects accounts of the shoot, they flipped the room, put the bed at the top, and poured 500 gallons of fake blood down through it. The blood hit the lights and picked up a current, which shocked the man pouring it. The weight of all the sloshing water threw the room off balance, and the crew lost control of the spin. It turned in the dark on its own, Craven and Haitkin still strapped in, upside down, soaked in red, for something like twenty minutes until it all ran out and they could be cut free. Craven called it a Ferris wheel from hell.

The footage they got from that mess looks like nothing else, because it wasn’t planned. Blood moved in ways unplanned and this created real chaos on set, that translated as one of the best moments of practical effects in any horror film.

What It Says

The film has a very small budget and the rotating room is yet another example of inventive and creative methods borne out of necessity. No digital fix or the safety net of fixing in post. A room was built and actors were strapped in while the room was physically turned while a woman appeared to die on the ceiling. This is why it still holds up and why even after over 40 years we’re still talking about it.

Did You Know

The first cut earned an X rating and Craven cut five seconds of Tina’s death to bring it to an R, and eight seconds of Glen’s. Over the years most of Glen’s footage crept back into the home releases. We haven’t seen those extra moments of Tina’s death. The version you’ve watched is still the censored one.

He leaves a chrysalis. A pupa. The thing in between.

The Silence of the Lambs has no shortage of memorable scenes, but the one that still gives me goosebumps is the autopsy. The young girl lies on the table and Starling, determined to show her worth, studies and examines the body. She notices something. She reaches into the girl’s throat and pulls out a hard brown case with a creature sealed inside it, mid-change. Not born and not dead. She takes it to the Smithsonian at two in the morning and two entomologists sit with it over a chessboard and tell her what she’s holding.

Lecter gives us the analysis later, when Starling interviews him. He tells her the significance of the moth is change. Caterpillar into chrysalis, or pupa, and from there into beauty. Our Billy wants to change, too.

A dead moth would only mean death. The chrysalis means he isn’t finished. He’s marking his progress in other people’s throats.

That’s the detail that keeps me coming back to this film.

Acherontia styx and Acherontia atropos — the species identified by the Smithsonian entomologists in the film is Acherontia styx, the Asian death’s head hawkmoth. The poster image is Acherontia atropos, the African species. Confirmed by Butterfly Conservation UK and the Journal of Geek Studies, “An Eldritch Anecdote of Death’s Head Hawkmoth from The Silence of the Lambs” (2021).

A note on terminology — the film calls it a cocoon. Strictly, moths spin cocoons and butterflies form chrysalides, and the death’s head hawkmoth pupates underground without spinning a true cocoon at all. Lecter says “chrysalis, or pupa” and covers himself. Worth knowing if anyone in the replies wants to be clever about it.

We know the ending to the film really well: Jim is recovering in the Cumbrian cottage. A jet spots the giant HELLO banner laid out in the meadow and everyone you care about lives. That’s the (as much as it can be) happy ending that Danny Boyle almost didn’t make.

There was a much darker ending planned first.

In this alternative ending, Jim has been shot and is back in a deserted hospital. Selena and Hannah are still wearing the red dresses the soldiers forced them into. Jim bleeds out on the table, and the two women pick up their guns and walk out through the operating doors, which swing shut behind them and slowly go still.

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland call that one the true ending. Jim opens the film alone in an empty hospital and closes it dead in another, while the women he travelled with carry on without him.

The test audience were not happy with the ending and it wasn’t because Jim had died, but rather because of the hopelessness or the two women walking out of the hospital into an unknown and deserted world … as it walking off to die. Boyle pulled that ending, then quietly restored it to the theatrical run from July 2003, in a post credit scene with a ‘What if … ‘ card.

One more never got near a camera, remaining in storyboard format only.

Frank doesn’t die at the blockade and Jim restrains. The group then track the radio signal to the research lab from the film’s opening, where a scientist has barricaded himself in with the food. He gives up the cure eventually: a total blood transfusion and Jim’s the only match. He trades his life so Hannah can keep her dad, and the last image is Jim strapped to a table while the infected flood in, the same position as the chimp in the very first scene.

Boyle threw it out for one plain reason. A blood swap can’t cure a virus that spreads through a single drop. As he put it, what were they going to do, drain him and scrub his veins with bleach?

This is one of those fascinating stories that I find intriguing even though I have heard about it so much. It feels like a combination of fate, ingenuity and desperate creativity. And what I love the most is that one of the most important and influential films in modern film history may not have worked if the shark had operated as initially intended.

For the film, they built three mechanical sharks. The sharks were affectionately referred to as Bruce, named after Spielberg’s lawyer. Each one of these things needed a small army to operate, up to 40 technicians and 14 operators. But nothing is plain sailing and this is where the interesting part begins. The first shark went into Nantucket Sound and sank straight to the bottom.

It got worse from there. Salt corroded the machinery, got into the pneumatic hoses, and wrecked the sculpted skin, which had been shaped for fresh water and swelled in the sea. A 55-day shoot turned into 159 days. Spielberg was 27, convinced he was about to be fired, and calling the thing a great white turd.

So he did something that changed the game. He didn’t show the shark, thus cementing the great idea that less is more. What he had left was a mere suggestion of the creature, which left the audience to fill in the blanks with their mind, thus creating something far more terrifying.

The shark became a presence you felt in the water long before seeing it. Even in the last moments we never see the shark fully. Instead, a yellow barrel breaks the surface. A point of view shot gliding towards a swimmer’s legs. Two rising notes from John Williams doing more work than any animatronic could.

We only get about four minutes of shark across a two hour film, but those four minutes are so effective because you’ve spent the rest of it imagining something worse.

Spielberg told Desert Island Discs the film is better for it. He had to be resourceful, had to work out how to build terror without the monster, and it pushed him back towards Hitchcock, who scared people without showing them anything. His words: ‘it was his good luck, and the audience’s too.’

A working Bruce would have been on screen the whole time. You’d remember the shark. Instead you remember the water.

Plus let’s not forget the expert direction (this is Spielberg after all), the fantastic cast, and a story so good it’s been copied and parodied countless times. Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw make one of the best trios ever. And that’s before we get to Murray Hamilton in his anchor suit.

Since 1983, every Metallica concert has started with the same introduction that gets the crowd chanting. The lights go down and three minutes and twenty seconds of swelling orchestra fills the arena. Then the band walks out.

The piece is The Ecstasy of Gold, written by Ennio Morricone for a Sergio Leone western in 1966, called ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’. We hear this music during the famous cemetery scene.

Morricone never saw it coming. When he found out that Metallica was using this music before the gigs, he said he was “very pleased.” It meant his music was “simple and precious at the same time.”

He was right on both counts.

Morricone scored over 500 films across his 60 years as a composer. One of his most famous scores, which comes with its own interesting story, is for The Thing. As we know, Carpenter almost always scored his own films, so flying to Rome to personally convince Morricone to take the job was unusual. Morricone agreed.

Then the whole thing nearly fell apart. They barely spoke to each other. Morricone scored without seeing any footage and when Carpenter heard the result, he found it too ornate. “Use less notes,” he told Morricone through a translator. Morricone simplified. The spare, icy theme we hear in The Thing is what remained.

Carpenter still filled gaps himself with simple synthesizer pieces. When Morricone found out, he was baffled. “Why did you call me if you want to do it on your own?” Carpenter’s answer was oddly touching: “I got married to your music. This is why I’ve called you.”

The Razzies nominated the score for Worst Musical Score in 1982. Tarantino later used three of Morricone’s unused Thing tracks in The Hateful Eight. That score won Morricone his first Oscar, at 87.

He died in 2020. Metallica’s tribute read: “Thank you for setting the mood for so many of our shows since 1983.”

The Moment

The shark is out there somewhere and we are having a respite from the chaos and action. It’s night and the three men are on the boat, drinking and trading scars. Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss are still at each other’s throats with Roy Scheider trying to calm them both. But this mutual sharing of ‘war stories’ begins to warm them to each other.

But, then Quint goes quiet. He rolls up his sleeve, points to a faded tattoo, and starts talking.

Eleven hundred men went into the water and their ship sank in a matter of a mere twelve minutes. He didn’t see the first shark for about half an hour.

Everyone is silent. The audience too … poised with this poignant moment. Shaw holds the scene for four minutes with almost no music, no cuts, no flashbacks. By the end of it you understand exactly who Quint is and why he’ll never stop hunting.

Why It Works

This is a strange choice in such a big blockbuster film. No action. No shark. Three men in a cabin, lit by a single lamp. Spielberg was making the biggest summer film of his career and he stopped it completely to let an actor talk. Maybe things were different back then, or maybe the summer blockbuster (which didn’t really exist yet - Jaws was the first) hadn’t really formed into what we see today, but you won’t really find this kind of scene in any modern film.

Shaw plays it with absolute stillness. The details accumulate slowly, each one more specific than the last. Eleven hundred men. Thirty-foot tiger sharks. The way you knew which men the sharks had taken by morning. It’s written and performed with such precision that it feels like memory rather than script.

And it is one of the most compelling and gripping moments in a film I have seen.

Behind the Camera

Nobody fully agrees who wrote it, and they’ve been arguing about it for fifty years.

Howard Sackler, an uncredited writer brought in to rework the script, conceived the Indianapolis idea. His version was roughly three-quarters of a page. Spielberg showed it to John Milius, who expanded it to ten pages. Shaw then cut it back down to five, reworking the language throughout.

Spielberg has said clearly: “I owe three people a lot for this speech.” Sackler conceived it. Milius expanded it. Shaw made it what it is.

Then there’s the drunk take.

Shaw arrived for the first shoot and told Spielberg that since all three characters had been drinking, he should drink too. Spielberg agreed. The take was unusable. Shaw called the next morning, asked to reshoot it sober, and Spielberg agreed. It took four takes. Spielberg later said watching it was “like watching Olivier on stage.”

What It Says

Jaws is sold as a film about a shark but this moment, the speech about the Indianapolis, gives the film such seriousness that it is still surprising when I see the film. You could say that this is the heart of the film, the thing that explains what the whole story is about. Men who’ve seen the worst thing imaginable and kept going anyway.

316 men were pulled from the water after four days floating in the cold, fending off sharks. Quint was one of them and we can see why he has spent every year since hunting sharks.

Did You Know

Quint says the Indianapolis went down on June 29th, 1945. It actually sank on July 30th. It’s a small error that nobody corrected, possibly because by the time anyone noticed it, the scene was already untouchable.

Peter Benchley, who wrote the novel Jaws was based on, once told a story about his housekeeper calling in sick the day after she saw the film. She had just learned from the speech how her son had died in the war.

Shaw died of a heart attack three years after the film’s release, aged 51. He never saw how completely that scene would define his legacy.

On a very small budget of slightly under £2 million, Rose Glass produced Saint Maud, her first feature film. Before anyone even heard about the film, it won the IWC Schaffhausen Filmmaker Bursary Award in 2019 which came with a £50,000 prize.

The character of Maud, is a private nurse, recently converted to a fierce and isolated kind of Christianity, caring for a dying former dancer named Amanda. Maud believes God speaks to her directly and believes she’s been given a mission to save Amanda’s soul before she dies. The question about whether this is right or not, is what the film is all about.

Glass wrote it from somewhere personal. “I was raised Christian and I’m a pretty neurotic person,” she’s said. “It’s only in the last few years that I’ve started to think critically and with more self-awareness about both subjects and how they connect.” Maud is what came out of that thinking.

She’s eerie and serene one moment, on the edge of violence the next, completely believable in both. Jennifer Ehle, as Amanda, gives the film its other half: someone who lived their life fully and danced for a living. She isn’t remotely interested in being saved.

The horror here isn’t conventional, it’s supernatural in a strange way. It’s the horror of a person with total conviction in their belief and is decided not to be moved. She keeps this faith despite everything the world shows her.

You spend the whole film unsure whether Maud is touched by God or simply unwell. The film only runs for 84 minutes and the shorter running time is something that is definitely to its benefit.

Also, that ending … wow!

One of the best new series I’ve seen in ages. Widow’s Bay is set in a New England coastal town where Matthew Rhys plays a mayor trying to sell a cursed island as a tourist destination. He doesn’t believe the local rumours, the curse, or the trouble it supposedly brings. Tom Loftis is a wonderful character, brave and cowardly in equal measure, who badly wants his struggling community to thrive. So he leans into the curse as a marketing angle. Tourists start showing up. Then the old stories start happening again.

The cast is outstanding across the board. Stephen Root as Wyck and Dale Dickey as Rosemary are both brilliant, and Rhys anchors the whole thing beautifully. But the absolute standout is Kate O’Flynn as Tom’s eccentric assistant Patricia. She’s one of the best characters I’ve watched in years.

The episodes work in a loose anthology style, monster of the week, each one largely self-contained but all connecting and tying together into something genuinely satisfying. Episode four is where the show hits its peak. O’Flynn leads it, it’s an absolute blast from start to finish, and honestly I’d watch the whole series again just for that single episode.

The tone never tips into parody, which is the trickiest needle a horror comedy has to thread. Rhys plays the flustered straight man, the island plays the joke, and the horror plays it completely seriously when it needs to.

Ten episodes, already renewed for a second season. Good company for a foggy evening.

The bear in Midsommar has a very important reason for being in the film. Ari Aster is very direct about why.

During an interview Aster said: “The bear is a very important symbol in Norse mythology and in Scandinavian folklore. It was loaded in all of the right ways.”

The bear first appears caged early in the film, glimpsed by the visiting Americans as they arrive at the commune. Nobody explains why it there or why its in the cage. None of the characters barely react to it. It just sits there in the background, dark against the bright Swedish daylight, until the final ritual reveals exactly why it was there all along.

Aster says he decided to include the bear specifically while researching, and learning about the mythology and culture that is prevalent in the film. Once he found it, he knew it was right and so the story changed and developed from there.

The film’s visual effects team worked under serious pressure to get the more demanding sequences finished in time, some of the most visually disturbing scenes in the film coming together in just a few weeks before release.

The bear’s final appearance is one of the most talked-about images Midsommar produced, and one of the most unsettling things in the entire film. Apart from the obvious reason, which I won’t spoil here in case you haven’t seen the film, the fact that the bear is in the film throughout without any of our characters learning why.

The poster shows just an egg opening, glowing green in the dark, floating above a landscape that could be a planet surface or a ship floor or nothing at all. No monster. No cast. No scene from the film.

The monster that made Alien famous doesn’t appear anywhere in the original marketing. Not on the poster or in the trailer. The Xenomorph, one of the most recognisable creatures ever put on screen, designed by the Swiss artist H.R. Giger, was kept almost completely hidden. The trailer contains one brief flash of a facehugger. That’s it.

Philip Gips and Steve Frankfurt designed the poster. The tagline, which is definitely one of the most famous, was written by Gips’s wife, Barbara, a copywriter who’d been working through rejected versions for weeks. The studio had tried others first. “Please listen mankind, you have so little time.” “A word of warning.” None of them came close to “In space no one can hear you scream.”

Eight words. They don’t describe a plot or name a character, but rather they just tell you that wherever this film is going, you’re going alone when you get there … and there will be screaming … lots of screaming.

What audiences actually got was a film that barely shows its monster for the first hour and a half. Alien is about waiting and about that feeling that something is in the room with you. The creature appears in pieces, a tail, a jaw, a shadow, before Ridley Scott finally gives you the full picture. He delayed it for as long as he possibly could, and even then it’s only really in much later films that we see the Xenomorph in all its glory.

The poster didn’t really lie. It understood the film better than any direct image would have. An egg about to hatch is the whole story. Something is coming. You don’t know what. You can’t stop it.

The Moment

Clarice Starling has nothing to offer Hannibal Lecter. No deal, no authority, no leverage. She’s a trainee sent to interview the most dangerous man in federal custody because her boss thought Lecter might talk to a young woman.

Lecter sets his terms immediately. Quid pro quo. He’ll give her something on Buffalo Bill if she gives him something personal in return. She agrees to this bargain and through this deal, the film really gets its teeth into the viewer.

Why It Works

Everything we need to know about the story and these characters is established in this one exchange. Clarice is smart and composed but definitely out of her depth, whilst Lecter is civil and contained, and entirely in control. Even from behind the prison glass, the power sits with him.

Behind the Camera

Jodie Foster admitted she avoided Anthony Hopkins for most of the shoot, on and off camera. Demme shot the cell scenes with each actor speaking directly into the lens rather than at each other. Foster and Hopkins were rarely in the same room. The chemistry you feel between them came almost entirely from two actors responding to a camera, not to each other.

Demme placed the camera directly between them so each speaks straight into the lens. When Lecter looks at Clarice, he’s looking at you. When she answers him, she’s answering you. You’re not watching the scene. You’re in it.

The glass between them was deliberate too. Bars would have put them in separate worlds. Glass puts them in the same one, with one thin layer between them. You feel how close he is. So does she.

What It Says

Lecter gives Clarice what she needs to catch Buffalo Bill, the other awful serial killer in the story. In return she tells him about her worst memory, the screaming of the lambs she tried and failed to save as a child. Seems like a fair trade, but it isn’t really. What she tells him is so personal and formative for her, that he can and does use it to understand her completely.

By the end of the film she has caught Buffalo Bill but Lecter has her in his enthral. In his newfound freedom (a part of the film where Lecter escapes, which deserves its own deep dive) he talks to her on the phone from The Bahamas. Here Lecter is stalking Dr. Frederick Chilton, the administrator of the Baltimore State Hospital who made his life worse in prison, ‘I’m having an old friend over for dinner’ he tells her. It’s the last thing he says to her and she knows that she will never have a chance of catching him.

The quid pro quo ran in the opposite direction the whole time.

Did You Know

When Foster collected her Oscar that night she looked at Hopkins in the audience and said: “Quid pro quo, Doctor.” He’s called it one of the finest moments of his professional life.

Gene Hackman was originally attached to direct and star as Lecter. He dropped out, finding the material too dark. Screenwriter Ted Tally later said Hackman’s version would have been “much less subtle.”

I loved the description of the film by Director Julius Avery. He said the script was “Indiana Jones on acid.” I hadn’t thought of it like that before but reading that line, it made so much sense!

What opens as a straight war movie, set on the eve of D-Day, quickly becomes something else entirely. American paratroopers come down behind enemy lines and need to destroy a Nazi radio tower in a church so that the final invasion can begin. These first twenty minutes are so tense, serious, and completely convincing, that I found myself literally on the edge of my seat.

Then the soldiers find what’s in the church basement.

For a moment after seeing the trailer, when the Bad Robot logo appeared I thought: ‘Oh no, not another Cloverfield spin-off’. But it wasn’t and thank goodness for that. The director, Avery shut down the rumors of that very quickly. The film was produced by J.J. Abrams through Bad Robot, so you can’t blame people for thinking that. It doesn’t have anything to do with Cloverfield, and it’s better for it. The Cloverfield films had nothing to do with Cloverfield by that time, banking on that name for money. Overlord had no interest in that game. It knew exactly what it was.

The film cost $38 million and made $41.7 million back. Technically a profit, but not the kind of number that gets a sequel greenlit. Which is a shame. Avery is completely committed to both halves of the premise.

The war sequences are brutal and very serious and the horror sequences are properly disgusting, and some of the best, most fun things I have seen in ages.

What makes it really tick are the characters. These are people you genuinely care about and that raises the stakes a great deal. Before anything supernatural happens, you’ve spent enough time with these soldiers that you actually care whether they get out. Boyce, played by Jovan Adepo, is a soldier who clearly shouldn’t be there and knows it. He’s not a hero in any conventional sense. He’s frightened, decent, and trying to do the right thing in a situation where the right thing keeps changing. Wyatt Russell plays Ford, his commanding officer, a soft spoken and calm character that is threatening and capable. You like him even though you’re not sure about him. Some choices he makes aren’t that good.

The horror, when it arrives, works because the human stakes are already established. You’re not watching monsters attack strangers. You’re watching something go very wrong for people you’ve been rooting for.

Go in expecting a campy B-movie and you’ll be surprised. Go in knowing it takes itself seriously and you’ll have a very good time.

Have fun with it. That’s what I did and it’s better for it.

In 1982, Rob Bottin was twenty-two years old and practically destroying himself to finish The Thing. Working seven days a week for fifty-seven weeks straight, producing almost every creature effect in the film. There was exhaustion, double pneumonia, and a bleeding ulcer by the end of production, landing him in hospital. But, when the studio sent him there to recover, he sent back instructions.

What he produced still holds up. The chest defibrillator scene, the head detaching and crawling across the floor, the body horror that unfolds in MacReady’s lab, all practical effects (long before the curse of CGI) built by hand, and all of it still genuinely disturbing forty years on.

The reason it works is simple. The actors were reacting to something that existed because it was real and juicy right in front of them.

People assumed that digital effects would make practical effects obsolete. Why build something when you can render it? Horror spent a good portion of the 1990s and 2000s finding out why. A lot of that CGI hasn’t aged well, and you can feel it.

Talk to Me came out in 2022, made by two Australian brothers who learned filmmaking on YouTube. For the scene where Riley becomes possessed and begins trying to destroy his own face, the effects team built a prosthetic face over actor Joe Bird’s real face. The result is one of the most disturbing scenes in recent horror, and it feels real because it’s physical. You can’t quite look away because some part of your brain registers that something real is happening. Almost perfect.

The New York Times called the effects “wonderfully gooey.” That’s the right phrase.

Practical effects didn’t die. They went underground for a while, and then filmmakers who grew up watching The Thing started making films.

Long live this trend I say.

Anthony Hopkins experienced an unsettling encounter during a coffee with a man in London. This coffee led to Hannical Lecter and one of the most iconic roles in film history. During the coffee Hopkins realised something was off. The man never blinked. He kept firing questions before Hopkins could answer the last one, pulling the conversation somewhere strange. Hopkins told Dick Cavett in 1992 that by the end of it he felt like he was in a different reality.

The man, he said, was a madman on the loose in London.

Hopkins has described not blinking as a trick: “if you don’t blink, you can keep the audience mesmerised.” But he realised that it goes far deeper than that. He’d also decided that Lecter should be completely still. “If you stare at someone for more than ten seconds,” he said, “it scares them. I knew instinctively that I should be absolutely still.”

Director Jonathan Demme pushed it even further. In Lecter’s scenes with Clarice, he had Hopkins look directly into the camera lens rather than at Jodie Foster. It breaks an unwritten rule of filmmaking … characters don’t look at the audience. The effect is that Lecter seems to be watching you, not her. You’re the one being studied.

The stillness also works as contrast. Every time Clarice swallows, or her eyes dart, or she flinches at one of his questions, it registers more sharply because he doesn’t do any of those things. The power sits entirely with the man in the cell.

Hopkins was on screen for less than twenty-five minutes. He won the Oscar. The stare is most of why.

It wasn’t a technique he invented in a rehearsal room. It was a man he met for coffee, who never once looked away.

Stanley Kubrick started calling Stephen King before filming began. Not once. Repeatedly. At strange hours. About God.

King has told the story many times, at book signings and in interviews, and the details shift slightly each time. Which is fitting, given the film they were making. But the broad shape of it is consistent, and the most detailed version came in a 2013 interview with Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air.

Kubrick called King while preparing to shoot The Shining and asked him a question that had nothing to do with the script, the casting, or the hotel. He wanted to know whether King thought ghost stories were fundamentally optimistic. His argument was simple: if ghosts exist, it means we survive death. And if we survive death, that isn’t horror. That’s hope.

King pushed back. He asked Kubrick whether he thought hell was optimistic.

There was a long pause. Then Kubrick said, in what King described as a very stiff voice: “I don’t believe in hell.”

That one exchange tells you almost everything about why these two men never agreed on what The Shining was.

King wrote the novel as a tragedy about a family that loved each other and was destroyed anyway. The supernatural was real in his version. The Overlook Hotel was genuinely haunted, genuinely responsible for what happened to Jack Torrance. The ghosts mattered because they were the cause. Jack was a good man, corrupted by something outside himself.

Kubrick wasn’t interested in that story. He didn’t believe in ghosts, didn’t believe in hell, and had serious doubts about God. What he believed in was the violence already sitting inside people, waiting for an excuse. Jack Nicholson’s Jack Torrance isn’t corrupted by the Overlook. He arrives broken. The hotel just gives him permission.

Kubrick rejected King’s own screenplay without reading it, preferring to write his own with novelist Diane Johnson. He kept the hotel, the hedge maze, the axe. He threw out almost everything King felt was the point.

King watched the finished film and said it had no heart. He’s been saying it ever since. In a 1989 interview he put it plainly: “There’s no tragedy because there’s nothing to be lost.” His Jack loved his family, was trying to get sober, was trying to be better. Kubrick’s Jack looks at his wife and child like problems he hasn’t solved yet.

Both films are about a man who tries to kill his family in a snowbound hotel. They are completely different films.

The phone calls kept coming during production. Kubrick quizzing King on the nature of death. Kubrick asking, in at least one version of the story, whether King believed in God. King said yes. Kubrick, depending on which telling you believe, either hung up immediately, said “I knew it” before hanging up, or said “I don’t think there is a God” before hanging up.

King has laughed about it at book signings for forty years. It’s a good story. But underneath it is something genuinely strange. A director so consumed by what a story meant that he was calling its author at odd hours to argue about the existence of God, while making a film that author would spend decades publicly disowning.

The Shining is one of the most studied films ever made. People have built entire theories around the number 42, the impossible window in Ullman’s office, the photograph at the end. Kubrick filled it with enough ambiguity that it sustains almost any reading.

King thinks that’s a flaw. He wanted clarity. A ghost story with real ghosts, real stakes, real loss.

What Kubrick made instead was a film that behaves exactly like those late night phone calls. It keeps asking the same question. It never quite hangs up.

Jordan Peele shot the sequence with the deer built by a puppeteer. It was fit into the film during the Sunken Place sequence, Chris floating in the dark, flicking a lighter, the deer getting closer with each flash of light until it came at him from over his shoulder. The deer represents his guilt about his mother’s death, a symbolic element in the film that is made monstrous.

However, Peele cut it because it looked bad on screen. When it came to the edit, he thought about fixing it with VFX and eventually decided the cost wasn’t worth it. On the Blu-ray commentary he said it plainly: he had to choose between spending money to make the deer work or spending it somewhere else. Somewhere else won.

Despite asking them not to use the scene in the trailer, the marketing team used the shot anyway. The studio thought that it might appeal to certain horror audiences. They were right, but many people then watched the film wondering when this monstrous deer would arrive. I tend not to watch trailers but having read about this I went back and found the scene.

What’s left in the finished film is quieter and more effective. The deer is everywhere, mounted on the wall, referenced in Dean’s cold monologue about how deer are destroying the ecosystem, used by Chris as a weapon in the film’s final minutes. The symbolism is all there. It just works through suggestion rather than a monster in the dark.

Sometimes the thing you cut is already in the film. Just not where you expected it.

The Moment

The psychiatrist has finished his monologue and everyone in the room seems shocked. They take him a blanket and we enter the cell with Norman sitting alone, and his mother’s voice runs through his head. Then he looks up. And smiles.

The shower scene is the most famous scene in the film … in fact possibly one of, if not, the most famous in any horror film ever made. Everyone remembers it. Hitchcock waited until the end of the film with a far quieter, far colder, and far scarier, gut punch right for the end.

Why It Works

The smile is the film’s real punchline which comes from everything before it. Until that moment the only time we see this visceral emotion from Norman is when he’s running at Marion’s sister with a knife, which is a moment I could write an entire post about. Everything before it has been building to this moment of absolute stillness, the smile and Norman’s eyes looking at the audience. I’ve seen it several times and that moment still gives me goosebumps. Norman isn’t frightened. He isn’t cornered. He has arrived somewhere. His mother’s voice is telling the police she wouldn’t hurt a fly, and he smiles because he agrees.

The skull lasts barely a frame. Most audiences don’t consciously see it. They just feel something is wrong. The film ends on the question it’s been asking all along. How do you lock up something that’s already won?

Behind the Camera

After the first rough cut, Hitchcock was so convinced the film had failed that he considered cutting it down to a television episode. He handed it to Bernard Herrmann to score. After seeing the finished film with music, he changed his mind, later saying Herrmann was responsible for 33 percent of the film’s effect.

The skull was laid over Anthony Perkins’s face in post-production, just long enough to register without being noticed. The tow chain in the final shot was placed deliberately too. As Marion’s car is pulled from the swamp, the chain passes through the spot where Norman’s heart would be.

Three elements, one shot. Almost nobody catches any of them the first time. I went back and watched those last ten minutes again and again. Simply marvelous.

What It Says

Psycho spends its first half following Marion Crane, a woman who steals money and immediately regrets it. The film kills her without warning forty-five minutes in (the famous shower scene). It has been doing the same thing to its audience ever since, offering the comfort of a clean explanation and then taking it away.

The smile is the last of it. The psychiatrist has given everyone in the room a logical account of Norman Bates. Hitchcock cuts back to Norman to show us it doesn’t matter. His mother looks out through his eyes and decides to behave, just to prove she can.

The audience has been watched the whole time it thought it was watching.

Did You Know

Anthony Perkins received no Oscar nomination for his performance. Throughout filming, Hitchcock hid various versions of the Mrs Bates corpse prop in Janet Leigh’s dressing room closet, listening to how loudly she screamed each time she found it.

I really loved this film when I first saw it. Paramount didn’t believe in this film. After a bad test screening, the studio declared it too intellectual, too complicated, and pushed for changes: a more sympathetic lead, a different ending. Producer Scott Rudin refused. The film went out largely as Garland made it, dropped into 2,012 cinemas with almost no fanfare, and barely made back its budget.

Five scientists enter The Shimmer, a spreading iridescent zone on the American coastline where the rules of nature don’t apply. What they find is beautiful and deeply wrong. Plants growing in human shapes. Animals carrying the voices of the dead. A lighthouse at the centre of it all.

Garland described his screenplay as a memory of the book rather than a direct adaptation. He wanted to catch the atmosphere, not transcribe the plot. It shows. The film moves like a half-remembered dream, logical on the surface, unsettling underneath.

It divides people. Some find the second half pretentious. Some find it transcendent. Both reactions make sense. What it doesn’t do is bore you, or leave you where it found you.

If you’ve seen it once and bounced off it, try again. If you haven’t seen it at all, clear an evening and don’t look anything up first.
