Growing up, my relationship with order was shaped long before I ever stepped into an academic setting. As a child, while my mother was working hard, our home often felt caught in a whirlwind of clutter and chaos. As the oldest sibling, I naturally took on a heavy sense of responsibility. Living inside that constant physical disorder created an uncomfortable inner restlessness—one that seeped directly into my concentration and daily peace of mind.

My mother’s coping mechanism back then was simply delegating chores, but I always knew deep down that I wanted a different path for my own future home. I wanted my kids to build internal discipline organically, enjoying a serene daily routine rather than feeling overwhelmed by household chores.

Fast forward to today, and reality hit: creating a calm routine with three kids aged 4, 5, and 11 is anything but easy! Between back-to-back pregnancies and the fast-paced storm of raising three distinct personalities alongside my husband, establishing a permanent home rhythm has been a journey. In fact, over the last few years, I’ve struggled to wake up early in the mornings simply because the underlying visual disorder felt exhausting before the day even began.

Then, I started noticing something profound in my children—a reflection of my own childhood feelings. When toys, books, and papers were strewn across every surface, my children couldn’t build meaningful play. They wandered aimlessly, their focus shattered within minutes by the visual stimuli competing for their attention. I found myself thinking, “Oh no, this isn’t how it should be.”

In our house, we have a golden living room rule: “Toys belong in your bedrooms; that’s where we play.” And yet, like clockwork, the toys somehow migrate right back to the center of the house! When I ask my 4, 5, and 11-year-olds, “What is your favorite room in the entire house?” their answer is always unanimous: the living room. Children naturally crave being in the shared heart of the family home. So the challenge isn’t forcing them out; it’s figuring out how to reduce this visual noise so everyone feels genuinely peaceful.

Children do not thrive in visual chaos; they love order, predictable rhythms, and clear boundaries. When kids resist tidying, it isn’t out of spite—it’s often their way of trying to assert autonomy. The key to turning visual clutter into calm lies in open family conversations where every voice is heard and valued. So, how do we balance childhood play with mental serenity? He simply couldn’t locate them inside all the visual information competing for his attention. That moment stayed with me because it’s a story about a brain running out of processing capacity.

Why Clutter Costs More Than It Looks Like

Every object in a child’s visual field has to be processed, even briefly, before the brain can decide it’s irrelevant. An open closet, a floor scattered with toys, or a table full of yesterday’s colouring projects is not neutral background. Each item is a small demand on attention.

Seeing the Room Through The Child’s Eyes

Look at your child’s space not as an adult assessing tidiness, but as a child experiencing a feeling. Young children process a cluttered room emotionally—as overwhelm, as not knowing where to start. When asked to clean up, they might break down in tears or feel unable to regulate. Seeing the environment through a rose-coloured lens means assuming the child isn’t being difficult, but is genuinely struggling to organize what their eyes and brain are taking in.

It Looks Different at Every Age

• Preschoolers (Ages 4–5): Highly sensory and play-driven. Sensitivity to visual overstimulation shows up physically as restlessness or meltdowns. A shelf with five accessible toys is more calming and engaging than a shelf with fifty.

• Pre-Teens (Age 11): Clutter intersects with identity and focus. A chaotic desk quietly signals “I can’t keep up,” shaping confidence around schoolwork. They benefit from clear, intuitive systems that let them manage their own space autonomously.

Organizing With Them, Not For Them

When I started a virtual session with an 11-year-old client, she was quiet and reserved. She didn’t like opening her closet, and got frustrated looking for clothes she wanted to wear. I asked if she ever had friends over. Not really, she said, with a sense of defeat in her voice.

At that age, so much of how she felt about herself was tangled up in what she wore and what her friends thought. I asked her to empty her closet so we could start with a clean canvas. Covered up by her clothes was a wall of photos of her and her friends. She lit up telling me about the days they were taken.

As we thoughtfully worked through the pile, I noticed a shift in her energy. She even started pulling together new outfit combinations. By the end she told me she’d never had fun putting her things away before.

That experience also made her feel excited to invite her friends over to see her hard work. Her parents were so proud and a bit surprised by how capable their daughter was.

Organizing together is where confidence rises to the surface, where a child can feel seen and heard, while supported just enough to believe in herself.

What Sparking Joy Looks Like at Different Ages

It’s not always a quick read to know what sparks joy for a child. A 4-year-old might treat a random wrapper like treasure because they found it themselves. An 11-year-old might part with something they’ve worn just once because a kid at school made a comment about it.

So the question about what sparks joy becomes an invitation to be curious. What do you like about this one? How do you play with it? How does it make you feel when you wear it? These are all questions that lead to more insight and connection than “Can we get rid of this?”, which can unintentionally cause them to hold on tighter.

It’s also important to look closely as much as we listen. Joy shows up in the body: hugging something close, a softer gaze, holding on a beat longer than the rest. Some children don’t always have the words yet, but their actions will reveal what’s truly meaningful to them.

Giving Things a Home

Home means a place you belong, where you feel safe and comfortable, where coming and going is easy. It means the same for our belongings.

Finding homes for their things gives children real practice in problem-solving. I like to approach it as if we are Goldilocks, trying out options together until a solution fits. A toy truck might sit too high on the bookshelf for the toddler to safely reach, or get lost in an oversized bin, but a small box with a lid and a label may be just right. Games might live near the dining table in one home, and in a converted basement play space in another.

There’s no single correct answer, only the one that fits how a family actually lives. When the fit is right, the space itself supports a child’s success, building habits, confidence, and a sense of ownership over the task.

Question 1

Zeynep: What distinguishes The Dooley Method from traditional decluttering, especially when working with reluctant or easily overwhelmed children?

I’d say, the biggest difference is that the Dooley Method doesn’t treat organizing as simply getting children to comply. It’s about how we get there. It’s a process where the parents are supporting children to develop confidence in decision-making, problem-solving, and learning through trial and error. The intention is not to have an organized space to meet expectations of the parents, but to foster intrinsic motivation to care for their belongings in ways that children can take pride in, because their participation is welcomed and respected.

With the Dooley Method, a reluctant or overwhelmed child isn’t labeled or punished. Parents learn to approach with curiosity and empathy, to look for the reasons behind the pushback or hesitation, and work together to come up with solutions to try. The intention is to create enough trust and ease that children’s knee-jerk reaction isn’t to brace against the process, but to start getting curious themselves when problems arise.

Question 2

Zeynep: How can parents use play and emotional connection to turn tidying from a daily struggle into a bonding experience?

Play is how children naturally learn. They’re curious about picking things up, setting them down, figuring out how something fits into a container. That curiosity is what drives play. It doesn’t have to be forced, but it does need the right environment to be more accessible. That’s where connection comes in.

When a parent listens actively and holds space for a child who feels scared or challenged by a task, that connection lets the child focus and retain information instead of being in a defensive state.

Think about it from an adult’s perspective. When we feel trusted in our abilities, supported by our coworkers, and offered opportunities to advance, work starts to feel like play. We put our best foot forward because we care about the outcome, knowing we’re valued as part of the team.

It’s the same for children. When they feel safe and they enjoy the process, the learning sticks on its own.

Zeynep: How do you recommend structuring organizational systems when young children (ages 4–5) share spaces or routines with older siblings (age 11)?

In a shared space, the practical Dooley Method approach is to use the children’s height to determine where to store things. On a bookshelf, the higher shelves go to the older kids, and a dresser gets divided from top to bottom.

To avoid conflicts, children can select which toys they play with together and keep those in a common area that they can all reach. The ones they’d rather play with by themselves go in their own labeled container. The type of container should match the child’s skill set, so it’s accessible to them, and they can easily take personal responsibility for their belongings. (I like having children design their own labels, to add another layer of ownership and a sense of safety and privacy.)

When a child recognizes that their needs have been taken into consideration in the way their things are organized, especially if they were part of coming up with the solution, then they are more likely to follow the system and respect each other’s boundaries.

Zeynep: From a neurological and developmental standpoint, how does visual clutter in a child’s bedroom or play area trigger sensory overload or anxiety?

Dr. Amy See’s Answer: A child’s brain has to process every object in view before it can decide what to ignore; and young children are far less efficient at that filtering than adults. So a cluttered room isn’t just visually busy to them, it’s a steady drain on the same mental energy they need for focus and calm. Research on classroom environments backs this up: kindergartners in visually busy rooms were more distracted and learned less than those in simpler ones (Fisher et al., 2014). At home, that quiet drain often shows up later; as a meltdown over something small, once there’s nothing left in reserve.

Zeynep: How do the cognitive responses to spatial clutter differ between a 4–5 year old preschooler and an 11-year-old pre-teen?

Dr. Amy See’s Answer: A 4 and 5 year old feels clutter almost physically; presented through restlessness, trouble settling, big reactions that seem to come out of nowhere. Fewer visible toys genuinely helps at this age; a shelf with five options is calmer, not more boring, than one with fifty. An 11-year-old experiences it differently; a chaotic desk isn’t just distracting, it can quietly whisper “I can’t keep up,” tangled up with confidence and identity. So the fix shifts too. Less about hiding things away, more about giving them a system they can manage themselves.

By nature, I have always loved order. Maintaining it with just one child was relatively simple. But as our family grew to three children—alongside expanding needs, scattered toys, and daily visual clutter—establishing a serene routine became a real challenge.

Connecting with Ann Dooley recently, receiving her personal support, and reading her insightful work was a turning point for me. Combining her connection-first approach with Dr. Amy See’s developmental perspective finally answered the questions I had been carrying inside. I realized that managing a busy household shouldn’t rely on strict orders, arbitrary rules, or punishment. Dear Parents,

Welcome back to the second part of our reflection on children and the digital world. In [Part 1], we talked about age filters like PEGI ratings, hidden ad traps in free apps, and my personal observations on titles like Minecraft, Roblox, Brawl Stars, and Super Bear Adventure.

Before we step any further into this conversation, I want to share a very clear boundary with you, echoing a wonderful comment from one of our Substack mothers: “Honestly, stay away as much as you can!”

I couldn’t agree more. My goal here is never to encourage digital game consumption, nor to present screens as an essential educational tool.

To be completely honest with you, as I write these words, my husband and I are still right in the middle of this exact battle with our kids! 😅 We are currently aiming for almost zero screen time at home. And let’s be real: keeping three energetic boys engaged, organizing their daily routines, and replacing screens with quality real-world time is no easy task. I have to admit, I rely quite a bit on “grandparent backup” to get through it! 💛

Yet, as my 11-year-old son delightfully protested the other day: “Mom, that’s not allowed, this is not allowed... what are we supposed to play then?!” 😅

He is right from his perspective. Peer pressure is real, curiosity is natural, and keeping three boys grounded in the real world takes daily effort. Although I have formal education in Child Development, I write this not to hand out flawless formulas, but as a mom walking right beside you in this sweet, everyday chaos.

An Educator’s Wisdom: Connecting Before Correcting

To bring a broader, time-tested pedagogical lens to our conversation, I sat down with my father, a veteran educator who spent decades inside classrooms observing how children interact, bond, and navigate their inner worlds.

I asked him a fundamental question that so many of us struggle with daily: “How can we help a child navigate peer pressure and build genuine self-control when all their friends are playing these games at school?”

His answer was a beautiful reminder of what truly lies at the core of guiding a child:

“Inside the classroom, children naturally connect, share, and build friendships through whatever they are playing or talking about. If we want to guide a child safely, we cannot just stand outside their world and shout rules. I have always made it a point to sincerely step into their space—joining their play through both my words and my active engagement.

When a child feels that you are entering their world without immediate judgment, trust is born. Once you earn that trust, the child will naturally share what they experience with you. True internal self-control isn’t built through cold, external bans; it grows organically out of the safe, authentic bond you create together.”

P.S. Growing up, my father was a very disciplined dad at home. He had firm, clear boundaries, which sometimes caused clashes between us as I was figuring out my own path. I understood why he did certain things much better as I grew older. But above all, he was a truly remarkable educator. Whenever I visited his school, his students would tell me, “You are so lucky to have a father like him!”

Even today, whenever a complex topic comes up, he gently asks beforehand: “Should I speak to you from an educator’s perspective or a father’s perspective?” Including him in this article is my way of leaning into his wisdom while continuing to nurture and restore our bond together. 🤗

A Critical Look at “Free” Games & In-App Traps

If there is one blanket rule we hold firm at home, it is this: Be extremely cautious with “free” games.

In the digital landscape, if an app costs nothing to download, your child’s attention and exposure are usually the product being sold. Free games survive on two aggressive mechanisms:

1. Unfiltered Ad Pop-ups: They pop up every few minutes, interrupting attention spans and often bypassing parental control filters to show scary, aggressive, or inappropriate adult content.

2. Microtransactions & Social Status Pressure: Games like PK XD or Adopt Me! look adorable on the surface with colorful pets and avatars. Yet, they are built around virtual trading and buying items with real money. This creates early consumerism, trading scams with strangers, and severe social anxiety among peers.

Looking at “Alternatives” with a Critical Eye

When parents ask about alternative applications, I always say: No app is a magic bullet, and none of them are 100% essential. If we choose to allow certain digital tools, we must do so with clear limits and a critical eye.

• Language & Early Learning Apps (e.g., Lingokids / Duolingo Kids): We currently subscribe to Lingokids at home. While it holds safety certifications and offers a contained, ad-free environment for early learning, I do not view it as a total solution or an endorsement for screen time. It is simply a controlled, less harmful tool compared to open-ended algorithms—used in strict moderation.

• Complex Puzzle Games (e.g., Machinarium or Chuchel): For older children asking for tactical or survival shooter games, hand-drawn puzzle games can sometimes serve as a calm alternative. However, a word of caution: games like Machinarium carry intricate, abstract puzzles. For younger children, this level of complexity can actually cause frustration, sensory overload, or focus issues. They are best reserved for older kids as a slow-paced reasoning alternative—never as a passive pacifier for little ones.

How We Keep Our Balance at Home

1. Observe Post-Screen Emotion: The best indicator of whether an app is harmful isn’t the app store review; it is your child’s mood when the screen turns off. If they are irritable, aggressive, or overly stimulated, that content isn’t serving their well-being.

2. Keep Devices in Shared Spaces: Keep tablets and phones in common family areas rather than isolated bedrooms. When children know they won’t be harshly punished for accidentally coming across something wrong online, they will naturally bring their concerns to you.

3. Offer Real-World Alternatives: When we say “no” to a game, we need to offer a warm “yes” to our presence. A family walk in nature, cooking together, or simple household responsibilities fulfill the human connection our children are actually searching for behind that glass screen.

Navigating this digital era with three growing boys is an ongoing journey of trial, error, and constant communication. We don’t have to be perfect; we just need to stay present, attentive, and connected to our children’s hearts.

As we walked toward the school, it felt as though the road itself was moving along with us. COVID was not even on the horizon yet, and everything felt wide open and full of anticipation.

I sat in the classroom with my son by my side. He was even more excited than I was. How could anyone ever forget the magic of a child’s “firsts”?

When our teacher introduced herself and began asking questions to get to know each mother and child, a deep sense of warmth filled the room. We instantly felt connected to her. I raised my hand and asked a question that was weighing on my mind:

“My son knows how to read—he learned it all on his own out of pure curiosity. But his writing is still very new. What should we do now?”

Our teacher smiled, praised his initiative, and then turned to my son with the gentlest energy: “Look, I’ve found my little assistant! We’re going to tackle this together, aren’t we?”

In that single moment, a seed of trust was planted.

However, during that same meeting, something else happened that shocked me deeply. I listened as some parents openly labeled their own children right there in the classroom—calling them “too unruly,” “difficult,” or “unable to understand anything.” My heart sank.

You see, before entering school, my son was often viewed by others as an overly active, energetic boy—a child society quickly likes to label as “rowdy.” But I refused to accept that story. I intentionally distanced myself from people who used those labels, gently warned them, and continuously explained why it was wrong to box a child into a word.

And the school environment proved me right. With a teacher who believed in him rather than labeling him, my son thrived. He became confident, academically successful, and was eventually guided toward specialized academic tracking by his teacher, who saw his potential and promised to always support him.

I am profoundly grateful to that teacher. But this isn’t about bragging about my son’s intelligence. This is about witnessing the Pygmalion Effect in real-time.

Am I a perfect mother who always says the right thing? Absolutely not. There were times I lost my temper, used the wrong words, and instantly saw those words mirrored back to me in my son’s behavior. It was an immediate feedback loop: whatever energy and words I put out, I received right back.

What Exactly is the Pygmalion Effect?

You might be wondering, what is this phenomenon that shifted my perspective so deeply?

Without getting too tangled in heavy academic jargon, let’s look at where it comes from. The term stems from Greek mythology. Pygmalion was a sculptor who fell in love with a statue he had carved out of ivory. He believed in its beauty so intensely, and loved it so deeply, that the gods eventually brought the statue to life. In short: our beliefs have the power to breathe reality into something.

In modern psychology, it’s often called a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Back in the 1960s, researchers Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson conducted a famous experiment in a San Francisco elementary school. They gave students a test and then randomly selected a group of children, falsely telling their teachers that these specific kids were ready to “intellectually bloom” in the coming year.

Here’s the catch: the children were selected completely at random. There was nothing academically superior about them.

Yet, by the end of the school year, those randomly chosen students showed significantly greater academic progress than their peers. Why? Not because their biology changed overnight, but because their teachers believed they were special. That belief unconsciously changed how the teachers communicated with them—offering more patience, warmer encouragement, and richer feedback.

How Should We Act? Practical Ways to Nurture Our Children & Students

So, how do we translate this powerful psychological principle into our living rooms and classrooms? Here are daily, actionable ways parents and educators can harness the Pygmalion Effect:

• Praise Effort and Process, Not Static Traits: Instead of saying “You’re a genius,” say, “I love how patient you were while solving that puzzle!” When children know growth comes from effort, mistakes no longer scare them.

• Reframe the Label Before You Speak: When a child is high-energy or challenging, pause before labeling them as “difficult” or “stubborn.” Reframe them in your mind as “passionate,” “persistent,” or “full of vital force.” Changing your internal word changes your tone of voice.

• Offer “Yet” When They Want to Give Up: When an elementary student or your child says, “I can’t do this math problem,” gently add one word: “You can’t do it YET.” This simple shift signals that their potential is still unfolding.

• Catch Them Being Good (The Power of Quiet Praise): We often interrupt children when they mess up, but Pygmalion magic happens when we notice their quiet kindness. “I saw how gently you shared your toys today without being asked. That shows so much maturity.”

• Set High, Loving Expectations in the Classroom: Teachers, instead of lowering the bar for students who struggle, keep the standard high while offering stronger support. Saying “I’m giving you this challenging task because I KNOW you have the capability to handle it” changes a student’s self-worth forever.

• Speak to Their Future Self: In moments of meltdown or frustration, speak to the wise, calm person they are growing into, rather than reacting only to the temporary behavior.

Lately, we have been seeing many pedagogical approaches, recommendations, and age-rating charts regarding the digital world. In this first part, I would like to share my thoughts based on my own direct experiences raising three boys.

First of all, when downloading games on tablets or phones, we encounter guidelines like PEGI 3 or PEGI 7. When we enable parental controls on a child’s personal tablet, the system restricts downloads to age-appropriate content. This is a correct and necessary step.

Is this step enough on its own?

Definitely not.

Even if the main content of a game seems age-appropriate, free games carry an overwhelming amount of ads. And rest assured, those in-game advertisements do not always pass parental control filters. Our children can easily run into completely inappropriate visuals or links while playing.

So, what should we do? Let us dive into this topic together.

I want to emphasize that I am not speaking here through a cold academic lens, but through the eyes of a mother raising three boys right in the middle of this chaos.

What Do We Need to Do?

1. Maintaining Full Control: As a first step, we need to fully activate parental controls and device restrictions. This is our baseline firewall.

2. Truly Knowing Our Children’s Interests: To guide a child toward healthy digital content, we must closely observe what sparks their curiosity and excitement.

3. Communication Through Eye Contact and Self-Control: Children can easily be influenced by their peers and ask for different games. The most critical aspect here is talking to the child while making eye contact. The child needs to feel: “My family truly cares about me, and they are aware of everything that might be good or harmful to me.” That is when a child’s internal self-control mechanism begins to form. This does not happen overnight; it is built with time, patience, and trust.

When we build a strong connection with our children, make them feel valued, and guide them toward building self-control, managing the digital world becomes much easier.

Now, let us move on to specific examples: the games themselves.

(Let me highlight again: I am sharing these points purely based on my personal observations as a mother, not as formal medical or expert advice.)

1. Minecraft

When I first saw Minecraft, the idea of a child creating something and building a world sounded wonderful. It looks like a great space to develop coding skills and imagination. Is it developmental? Yes, it certainly has benefits.

However, in an unsupervised environment, it brings significant risks. The zombies and scary characters in the game contain elements that could trigger aggressive impulses or violence in a child’s world. Fortunately, these creatures can be turned off in the settings. It might be acceptable to play in a clean, creative world under full parental supervision. But as children grow older, the online multiplayer feature comes into play, creating a risk of communicating with strangers. Having children in online spaces with strangers poses a serious safety risk.

2. Roblox

This game uses open-source code, meaning anyone can upload their own games into the system. There are thousands of different games and virtual rooms inside. Although age restrictions exist, older children often find ways around them.

As a mother, I personally do not allow my children to play this game. In fact, access to this game has been blocked in my country.

3. Brawl Stars

This is a character-based game. Children naturally love games with character progression. However, this game is fundamentally a combat game built around conflict and violence. It is definitely one of the games that children should stay away from for their healthy emotional development.

4. Super Bear Adventure

To be honest, I personally found this game quite fun as a mother :) However, it has its own serious concerns:

• First: The uncontrolled ads in the free version carry high risks.

• Second: It features a multiplayer mode. Children can enter custom codes to play together, which requires strict supervision.

• Third: It still contains violence, even if presented in a cartoonish style.

How Do We Manage This at Home?

My 11-year-old son and I regularly hold “game updates.” He comes home influenced by school, his friends, and unfortunately, children whose families do not monitor their devices. He often approaches me with the mindset of “They have it, so I should too; if they play it, it must be fine.”

Sometimes he struggles to accept these boundaries because everything he sees around him creates natural curiosity and peer pressure.

My husband and I review these games one by one, and sometimes we even sit down and play together with our kids. Instead of completely banning things without explanation, we explain the risks and steer them toward safer, healthier alternatives.

Our recent conversations about societal pressures and the instant judgment mothers face brought me back to a day frozen in my memory—an event my husband, myself, and my oldest son (who is now 11 but was just a toddler walking his first steps back then) experienced years ago.

My husband had just bought a new car and was excitedly driving us around. As we entered our neighborhood, driving very slowly, a young child suddenly ran directly in front of us. I will never, as long as I live, forget the sheer terror on my husband's face. Before I could even process what was happening, a crowd gathered; the child's foot had caught near the edge of the tire.

They managed to pull him out, but immediately, the crowd turned aggressive and started attacking my husband. The child was crying, and chaos erupted. In that split second, I didn't think about the danger or the angry crowd; driven by pure maternal instinct, I jumped out of the car, dove straight into the mob, grabbed my husband and the injured child, and put them back in the car. I had no idea who the child's family was or where they were; my only thought was to reach the hospital as fast as possible to stop his pain.

On the way, I cradled him in my arms, held him tight, and whispered, "Don't cry, my sweet boy, you're going to be okay." When we arrived at the nearby hospital, the staff who knew me saw my state and assumed he was my own son. They kept trying to calm me down while I was crying, begging them, "Please, just make him better."

Meanwhile, outside, the whispers and shouts from the crowd were already rising: "Where is his mother?!"

As if a child belongs solely to the mother, both my husband—who was entirely blameless in the accident—and that absent mother were instantly vilified. I later found out that the poor mother was working hard in the village tending to livestock. She had sent her son to the market with his grandfather. The grandfather had handed the boy some money to buy chocolate, and in a flash of excitement, the child bolted into the street, intersecting with our path.

My husband took care of everything, supported the family, and was legally cleared of all fault, but the trauma shook us all for a very long time. Yet, the person I felt for the most was that mother. I am a mother too, and seeing how society blindly points fingers at the mother the exact second something goes wrong truly broke my heart. The sheer weight of expectations placed on working mothers is incredibly exhausting.

Please, let’s never look at anything just on the surface. Let us stop judging people instantly without knowing the story behind the scene.

Thankfully, that little boy fully recovered. He carried a small physical scar from that day, but today, he is a wonderful, healthy young man. 🙏✨

Today, I want to take you back to my childhood, when I was just 5 years old, to share a very special memory that reminds me every time I recall it: what truly leaves a lasting mark in childhood? 🥰

🎒 An Early School Adventure and a Little Accident

I started school early, with immense excitement, when I was only 5. Normally it wasn’t allowed, but somehow I was accepted. Since everyone assumed I would probably repeat the year anyway, I spent that first year being quite pampered. However, once I learned how to read and write, I suddenly found myself promoted straight to the second grade! 🤫

I have very few clear photographs in my mind from those days. Yet, the traces of the emotions those days left in me are still as fresh as yesterday...

One day in class, I told my teacher that I needed to use the restroom. My teacher, probably thinking that first graders often made up such excuses to play, did not give me permission. She wasn't an uncaring person at all; on the contrary, she is a teacher I loved dearly and still remember with great affection today. But on that day, with my child's mind, I got so angry with her... that I just let it go right where I was sitting! 🙈

I don’t remember feeling ashamed at all. The only scene engraved in my mind is my classmates gathering around me, pointing fingers, and chanting, "Zeynep wet herself!" in a rhythmic beat. 😁 My teacher immediately called my older brother, who was in the upper grades back then, and sent me home with him.

👗 The Green Velvet Dress and a Mother's Magic Touch

This is where the truly magical part of my story begins.

When we got home, my dear mother, who was a housewife back then and dedicated all her time to us, immediately took charge of the situation. She had hand-sewn a green velvet dress for my sister and me, with beautiful ruffles on the sleeves and hem. She dressed me in a clean, crisp white shirt underneath, and put my shiny white patent leather shoes on my feet.

As she sent me back to school, she gently stroked my hair and whispered those magical words into my ear:

"They are going to adore you! Let's see if they can tease you ever again." 🥰

I went back to school. I walked into the classroom proudly, gliding in like a little princess, and took my seat. The very children who had just been mocking me a moment ago suddenly crowded around me: "Oh, your dress is so beautiful! Will you be my friend?" they began to say. In fact, when our teacher stood us all up in a choir to sing, I saw my classmates shoving each other just to stand next to me.

Can you imagine the immense, overflowing happiness I felt at that moment?

✨ The Most Precious Legacy We Leave to Children: Emotions

Looking back today, I see one thing very clearly: at that age, I wouldn't normally remember exactly what brand of clothes I wore or the minor details of that day. But I have never forgotten my mother’s warmth wrapping around me at that vulnerable moment, how she instantly repaired my wounded pride, and how she made me feel so incredibly special.

As adults, we sometimes focus too much on the material things we provide for our children. Yet, there is only one thing that leaves deep scars or lifts children up to the clouds: the emotions they feel.

When our children make a mess today, spill a glass of milk, or face a minor defeat, the reactions we give them will remain in their memories years from now merely as a "feeling." Will it be a feeling of brokenness, or the unshakable confidence felt through a green velvet dress?

Let us build wonderful memories for our children to look back on tomorrow—memories filled with love, warmth, and security. Let us make them feel just how unique and special they truly are. 💖

Amidst the daily hustle and bustle of life, I often pause to watch the world through a child’s eyes. Their world is so pure, so open to discovery... While we adults try to make sense of the world through rigid rules, they learn by observing, feeling, and most of all, mirroring our steps.

Today, I wanted to talk about how we can instill manners and kindness in our children within the lively yet peaceful atmosphere of our homes—without overwhelming them or cramping their spirits. Guided by this little roadmap, let’s plant the seeds of kindness in those pure hearts together.

1. The Magic Words: “Please” and “Thank You”

Kindness begins in language. A child saying “please” while asking for something with their tiny hands, or saying “thank you” with smiling eyes when they receive it, is not just a rule; it is a profound respect for someone else’s effort. Instead of dictating this to them, we can model it by saying “thank you” to each other often throughout the day.

2. The First Step of Patience: Waiting for Your Turn to Speak

We all know those sweet, chaotic moments at home when everyone wants to tell a story at the exact same time. For children, holding back their excitement and waiting for their turn is a major developmental milestone. By saying, “Let’s wait until your brother’s/father’s sentence is finished, then I will listen to you with all my heart,” we can give them both the security of being heard and the patience of waiting their turn.

3. Flowing from the Heart: Using Kind Words

Words carry frequencies, and they leave deep imprints on a child’s soul. Choosing to use constructive and affectionate language instead of hurtful or impatient words ensures that children adopt a gentle language when communicating with their peers. Summer Fruits & Vegetables Coloring Book

Today, I was looking through Ann’s (@thedooleymethod) posts about home organization. There was a beautiful section about parting ways with excess belongings. Ann explained the concept of children letting go of things by their own choice so beautifully... Reading about how our workload increases as items multiply, and how she shows this to children through empathy, deeply touched me.

Of course, the first thought that crossed my mind was: “I have three boys, it’s impossible for me to do this, they would never let go of anything...”

Still, I wanted to try and called out to them: — “Boys, let’s play a game together, but it’s not a normal game!” Of course, they immediately answered in unison with that familiar question: — “Are we going to play the house-cleaning game?” 😄 (I make them do that quite often...)

“No,” I said, “this time it’s a bit different. I want you to go and bring me just one toy of yours—only one—that might be broken, ready for the trash, or something you want to share with other children. Would you like to do that?”

And honestly, they went and picked something out incredibly fast! To be absolutely sure, I asked them again: “Make sure you are bringing me something that is truly yours and that you are ready to let go of—perhaps something you forgot about a long time ago. Don’t bring something that is valuable to you or belongs to your brother.” Meanwhile, my eldest son made a joke, holding onto many of my things and saying, “Let’s throw these away.” 😂

The Great Decluttering Begins...

Then, in an unbelievable way, they started sorting through things all on their own:

• My eldest son shared some of his things with his brothers and completely parted with a portion of them.

• My middle son (who isn’t a big fan of tidying up 😜) quickly brought a few pieces and said, “My mission is complete!” and went back to his corner.

• My youngest son is a total playful spirit; he loves playing by himself or with his friends. At first, he hugged his toys tightly and resisted, saying, “Nooooo, this can’t go, can I keep this?” but in the end, he also chose to let go, share, and declutter.

“What Should I Let Go Of?”

Watching my children part ways with their things so purely and quickly made me fall into deep thought. What about me? What did I need to let go of?

There were so many things sitting in corners and closets that I hadn’t used in a long time but just couldn’t seem to part with... Clothes I could no longer wear while going through the cycles of pregnancy, childbirth, and losing weight; certain gifts; even a tiny note card I assigned a huge meaning to just because it was a keepsake... Things I saved from my children’s infancy...

And the hardest part; many belongings left behind by my late mother... Items I kept simply because her hands touched them, because her embrace was in them, and so much more...

Then I thought: When did I become like this? I have never been a hoarder in my life. And I am still not; if I have a piece of clothing that works, I don’t go out and buy a second one. But time, experiences, and life bring a person to such a point that we form deeper attachments to objects, which actually causes us more heartache in the end.

That is exactly why I love the pure nature of young children. Even if they fight with a friend, they don’t hold a grudge; two minutes later, they continue playing right where they left off. Unless they have an extreme attachment to a toy, they forget its absence very quickly.

In our culture, we have a beautiful phrase that I love: “Serving the object” (Eşyaya hizmet etmek). Due to the emotional attachments we cannot overcome within ourselves, we burden ourselves with objects—both emotionally in our hearts and as extra work and time in our lives. In the end, at some point in the future, in whose hands will these things remain this precious anyway?

It has been two and a half years since I lost my mother. Many of the belongings she loved and cherished are no longer in this world...

Accumulating Memories vs. Accumulating Objects

I watched a show recently: a man had spent years collecting toy cars and other toy-like items. His house was completely packed to the brim with these piles. When he finally grew old and passed away, all those piles were left as an inheritance to his children. And what did his children do? They either donated them to charities or sold them. Of course, I cannot truly know that man’s inner world or his feelings; but if he had spent true quality time with his children instead of accumulating those piles, if he had learned to enjoy the present moment, I don’t think he would have felt the need to fill his house with objects.

So, at the end of the day, was our house completely organized? No! To be completely honest, achieving that fully with these young children is genuinely very difficult.

But today, I spent such beautiful, wonderful time with my children. At the end of the day, they wrapped their arms around my neck and said, “Mom, we really loved doing this with you.”

In that very moment, I understood so much better what Ann (@thedooleymethod) meant and what she was emphasizing in her writings. I took a journey into the past and the future within myself. I was exhausted, but my heart was full of peace: “Yes, my children, I am very tired, but it was beautiful.”

Final Words

The people who enter our lives, the ones who leave, or the ones who are still in our lives... We need to understand this very well: the valuable thing is not the objects. An object is merely a tool. Of course, I am not talking about the necessary things that make our lives easier, or special keepsakes that hold an immense value to us.

What truly matters are those moments passing by in life... They are so unique and so incredibly precious. We just need to know how to appreciate their worth. 🤍✨

That is why I created a gentle "Emotion Board" for us. Next time you feel a shift in your little one’s energy, look for these 5 calm clues to help guide them through their inner weather:

Check Facial Cues & Posture: A slumped shoulder or a tight jaw often speaks louder than words. Look at their body language first.

Listen to Vocal Tone: It’s not just about what they are saying, but how they say it. A sudden high pitch or a quiet whisper can be a sign of a worried heart.

Ask Simple, Open Questions: Instead of asking "Are you angry?", try shifting to a gentle: "How does your belly feel right now?" or "Would you like to hold my hand for a minute?"

Observe Changes in Play: Play is a child’s natural language. If they suddenly start throwing blocks aggressively or completely stop playing their favorite game, they might be processing a big, frustrating emotion.

Create a Safe Space to Share: Sometimes, the best way to identify a feeling is to simply sit with them in the quiet. Let them know that every emotion—whether it's as bright as the sun or as heavy as a thunderstorm—is welcome in your home.

Choose presence over perfection, mama. You don't need to fix every mood instantly. Just being there, breathing through the storm with them, is the greatest gift you can give.

• The Toy Reset (Toy Collection): Instead of cleaning up after them, turn a wicker basket into a “treasure chest.” Let them slowly and mindfully place their blocks back, building their fine motor skills and feeling the deep satisfaction of finishing a task.

• The Gentle Fold (Laundry Folding): Hand them small washcloths or shirts while you do the laundry. Yes, their folds will be messy. Yes, they will probably unfold what you just did. But the sense of cooperation, belonging, and practical skill they build next to you is priceless.

• The Precise Placement (Egg Carton Placing): Give them an empty egg carton and some wooden toy eggs (or real ones, if you are feeling brave!). Let them focus on sorting and placing them one by one. This simple motion builds incredible quiet focus and spatial awareness.
