I swear it’s ‘something’ 24/7, and football and cheer practice five days a week...

Of course I can’t find anything in the kitchen, and the kids ‘kinda’ know where stuff is, so every meal has been an ‘experience’ so far! But at least it’s a gas stove! Oh man, do I miss cooking on one! I made them a ‘railroad’ casserole last night and they actually ate it, so I’m happy about that, and got to give them a little bit of family history to go with it.

The contractors are supposed to be here to work on the new siding (fire prevention grant), to put Hardi Board on the house, then repaint it. So that’s going to mean hammering, sawing, and pounding all day. So much for daughter getting any rest during that... And the dogs have to be kept inside to keep them from ‘interacting’ with the workers...sigh...

But she is slowly getting better. Frankly, I don’t see how they keep up with all the stuff going on! I swear we didn’t have this much crap when the girls were little...

At least they have games to play, so I get to do some writing.

And Sacramento is...strange!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen more Tesla cars in one place in my life! Ironically, the only two Tesla trucks I saw were on I-5, one going north, and the other south.

And I have never seen so many people tied to their phones, I mean literally ALL the time, including while walking, and being oblivious, walking out into traffic and not even noticing the cars... sigh

And the idjits in the hospital were just as bad, including the doctors, nurses, and whatever the hell the other 4000 people were. Even the visitors were locked into their phones.

When I went out to eat, the waitstaff, bartenders, and customers were ALL on their phones, to the point that the restaurant was almost silent! And expensive!!! Unless you do McDonalds or something like that, it’s a minimum of $25 for one, and a lot more for a group.

Interestingly, the Marriott hotels have apparently gone to charge cards only, no cash for anything! I had to go down the street to get change to use the washer and dryer!

Frankly, I’m glad to be back up in the ‘sticks’ in Lake County, although the grocery stores, even up here have a lot of stuff locked up, including the bathrooms. You literally have to get an employee to open the door for you, since they are on cipher locks!

11 more days... I can do this... I think...

But I got her home yesterday at 5pm, gave her a pill, and put her ass in bed. Daddy had the kids at a peewee football game, so I was only herding cats and dogs. At least the dogs didn’t try to jump on her!

Today I’m dealing with the kids in addition to everything else!!!

But, in ‘other’ CA news, actually heard this from both Steve and youngest daughter, who has a friend that is a winery manager up by Hopland.

Napa Valley’s already struggling wine industry is being slapped with a new groundwater bill as county officials scramble to meet California’s state-mandated ‘sustainability goals’. Even grape growers who don’t pump groundwater will have to cough up $17.53 for every planted acre under proposed fees for the 2026-27 fiscal year.

Those who actually use groundwater for irrigation face another $26.91 per acre, taking their total hit to $44.44. County officials argue that even growers who dry-farm or use surface or recycled water benefit from having groundwater available.

Kurt Schlagle stuck his finger in his collar again, trying to stretch it out so he could breathe, as he stood outside the Cattleman’s Restaurant in downtown Amarillo in late August, 1926. “What the hell am I doing here,” he mumbled to himself, “I ain’t a driller or roughneck anymore, and sure as hell ain’t goin’ back to that. And I ain’t never heard of Phillips bein’ around here.”

Just then, a Model T truck pulled to the curb, and two men got out. One, well-dressed, older, going bald and wearing glasses, looked impatiently around as the younger man got out carefully and limped around the front of the truck. The younger man smiled and said, “Kurt! Glad you made it!”

The old man shook his hand once, with a strong grip. “Frank Phillips. Let’s go in and eat. I just got in from Bartlesville and I’m hungry.” Jake was already pulling the door open as Phillips turned away from Kurt.

Kurt cocked his head at Jake, who grinned ruefully and motioned for Kurt to follow. As Kurt passed, Jake said sotto voce, “He’s the boss man. Doesn’t hold with wasting time. And he’s got a temper.”

After the waiter delivered their coffee and took their orders, Phillips got right down to business. “Schlagle, Sanchez says you’re a good pipeline man. I talked to some folks at the Texas Company and they say you know what you’re doing and don’t waste time. We are buying the American Refinery up in Borger, and are going to start refining oil up there. I need pipelines from the storage sites around Borger to the refinery. I want eight-inch lines, buried at least thirty inches, and Sanchez has already looked at potential routes. I want you to go out with him and give him an estimate of how long it will take to get them in.”

Kurt swallowed. “Um, Mr. Phillips, you’re aware I actually work—”

Phillips stared at him. “I know you’ve been working for the Texas Company. I’ve already talked to Joe Cullinan, and he can spare you and your crew, if I think you can do the job.”

The waiter brought the steaks, ending the conversation as all three men dug in. Twenty minutes later, Frank Phillips sat back, mimed paying the bill, and said, “Two days should be enough time to check what Sanchez has picked for routes. I will expect to see you Monday morning at my hotel by seven am with your proposed estimate.” The waiter arrived with the bill, Phillips paid it, and said, “Let’s go Sanchez, I’m tired.”

Jake said, “Kurt, where are you staying?”

“I’m out at the tent camp on the north side of town. First right toward Panhandle.”

“Pick you up at seven?”

“Sounds good.” Kurt stood. “Good night, Mr. Phillips.”

Phillips nodded and started for the door, as Jake limped after him, shaking his head.

Hey, Gen Xers, another hallmark of our younger days is going away. Then again, most of us would be surprised to know that it was even still around at all.

We all remember the ads in magazines and Sunday papers: GET 7 RECORDS OR TAPES FOR A PENNY! There was a list of options for the records or tapes (later CDs) that you wanted, and all you had to do was attach a penny and send it in. If you were young enough, you probably missed the fact that you were signing up for a subscription service, and I bet most of us abandoned that subscription.

Truth be told, teenage Chris probably owed hundreds of dollars to Columbia House. There’s no telling how much money Columbia House thought it would rake in but didn’t.

I remember my aunt and uncle getting records from them in the late 50s, as they lived out in the oil field and there was ONE small town a half hour away. Anything else was at least an hour’s drive, if not longer. And my aunt sang in the church choir, and played the piano for years, both at home and church.

I honestly don’t remember ever sending in a penny or anything else, but that was a LONG time ago! I honestly hadn’t thought of them in probably 40 years. The one thing I do remember is that the choices weren’t that great, at least for a penny...

And I think a lot of folks didn’t realize it was a subscription either! I know ‘we’ had a subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica for their yearly update books, but that’s really the only subscription I remember...

This came to me through mama’s side of the family, she said this reminded her of one of the places they lived in the 1920s, when she was little...

It’s still in the original frame, and has this ‘doodle’ on the matting... I do remember Grandpa saying they kept a cow or two for milk and food during the Depression. He also said he was lucky, in that he was able to hold his job on the railroad during that time.

My Google-fu came up with this on the artist... Which is strange, as this ‘appears’ to be a more western scene, but apparently he was from upstate New York...

John Hill Millspaugh, born at Crawford in New York State, became a painter and etcher in the late 19th century and earned much respect for the quality of his work. However, he is little known today.

He was raised at Crawford on the Hudson River. At age 16, he went to New York City to apprentice as a stereotyper, which was highly detailed work creating relief plates of metal from original woodcuts. By the mid 1840s, he was working in Waverly as a stereotyper, and then moved to Ithaca where he met his wife, Marion Elizabeth Cornell. Her uncle, Ezra Cornell became exceedingly wealthy from the telegraph business and founded Cornell University.

John had a brother, Edward, who showed early talent as an artist and studied with Henry Inman, a leading Hudson River School painter. He died at age 31 from smallpox. Hoping to carry on his brother’s work, John began studying art, and his most influential teacher was George Lafayette Clough (1824-1901), also a Hudson River School painter.

John Millspaugh’s career between 1851 and 1871 remains undocumented, but according to his obituary, he considered himself an amateur artist. It is thought he made his living during this period as a stereotyper. A description of one of his oil paintings shows a family picnic, and one person reported seeing an etching of Cornell University. The only known painting in a public collection is dated 1872 and is titled “Autumn in the Susquehannock.” It is a pastoral landscape in the Hudson River School style and is in the Palmer Art Museum at Pennsylvania State University.

In 1872, Millspaugh left Ithaca for New York City to take a job for an undetermined period of time at the Customs House. However, his family suffered when a severe depression, the Panic of 1873, hit a year later, and his son had to leave college.

By 1882, he reportedly was getting attention in New York City for his etching, an art form that was extremely popular at that time and tried by many artists. Millspaugh was invited to join the New York Etching Club, the country’s first organization specifically devoted to that medium. His etchings are highly detailed, and most of them depict quiet landscapes. The earliest one published was likely “Evening on the Delaware,” by fine-art publisher Christian Klackner. One of these works is in the Parrish Art Museum at Southampton, Long Island.

Millspaugh collaborated with Boston painter and etcher Louis K Harlow to publish works through Klackner. After 1889, Millspaugh did mostly self publishing. At an undetermined date, he left Manhattan and returned to Ithica to live. He and his wife spent the winter of 1893-94 in Denver, Colorado, and he died on the return trip to Ithaca.

California regulators on Monday approved new rules that will restrict what tires you can buy when it’s time to replace them on your car.

In a unanimous vote, the California Energy Commission voted to adopt new rules that will phase out the sale of replacement tires that don’t meet certain energy efficiency standards.

“This ultimately is about protecting consumers,” said David Hochschild, the chairman of the California Energy Commission. “I see this as sheltering the public from higher costs in the long run.”

Tire manufacturers and the commission’s staff are at odds over whether this will add to the cost of living in the state. Both sides acknowledged this will no longer allow the sale of a significant portion of the tires currently sold in California.

BLUF- The California Energy Commission has acknowledged that the state will no longer allow the sale of 70% of tires currently sold in California by 2033, a statement Goodyear made in the original version of this story.

This is yet again a ‘good idea’ that is going to cost folks LOTS of money, and limit choices even more than they are now...

It’s all about ‘rolling resistance’ on the road, e.g. a harder tire compound that lowers the rolling resistance as the car goes down the road.

But...

They do more damage to the roadway (see HOV lanes on 395 into DC), and do not handle wet roads well (can you say spin outs, sliding rather than braking, etc.).

I can’t find the article now, but in the mid 2005ish time frame they did a test on which vehicle did more damage to the roadway, a Prius or a full sized SUV. The Prius did due to the hard tires (low rolling resistance for high mileage)...

And now they are going to do the same thing in Kommiefornia, where the roads already suck, and are only going to get worse!

And I’m betting they ‘hope’ to get this pushed nationwide, so they can force the tire manufacturers to bow to their will.

I’m sorry, but if I ran a major tire manufacturer, I’d say you can buy what we make, or we will go elsewhere. We are not going to bend a knee to you.

Ronnie Barrett did it with the MK-82 after they outlawed .50 cal rifles out there, and he pulled all his business and maintenance from all of California, including the departments that had bought MK-82s! And strangely enough, his sales went up!

Yeah, maybe tossing all of the physical media and using the cloud to store your memories wasn’t the best move?

Especially if you’ve got 70 years of archival footage that could disappear at the drop of a hat, as this St. Louis PBS station has learned.

They stored 50 terabytes of data with a cloud storage company, that company went kaput, and now they’re having to fight tooth and nail to get that data back.

We’ve had a lot of conversations about ‘cloud’ storage here. In reality it is nothing more than somebody else’s computer that you’re storing stuff on.

And how good is that ‘security’, or is there any? I know these places ‘claim’ there is airtight security (yeah, right), but how much stuff has been hacked in the last 10 years?

How many ‘actors’ have had those ‘private’ nudes hacked? How many companies have had business plans hacked? How many companies have their entire proprietary dataset hacked? How many hospitals (remember that whole HIPAA thing)?

How do you know who really has access to your private data? Some bored tech somewhere scanning your data for any .jpgs, or???

In the early 2000s, I watched a group of white hat hackers hack a windoze network in less than five minutes from start to root access on a system they had NO access to. Sigh... And that was 20+ years ago.

And lets not forget the Google debacle, where they said ‘anything’ you put on a Google drive belonged to them, copywrite or not...

Personally, I never have, and never will use or trust the cloud. I prefer physical media that I control. I use terabyte hard drives for both backup, and ‘spare’ storage, in addition to dumping my critical stuff to thumb drives, one of which is kept off site.

What y’all do is up to y’all, but you should be aware of the possible issues. Just sayin...

A female CNN journalist heard about a very old Jewish man who had been going to the Western Wall to pray, twice a day, every day, for a long, long time.

So she went to check it out. She went to the Western Wall and there he was, walking slowly up to the holy site.

She watched him pray and after about 45 minutes, when he turned to leave, using a cane and moving very slowly, she approached him for an interview.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Thursday that Los Angeles County agreed to issue concealed carry permits in accordance with a landmark Supreme Court decision.

The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division sued the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) and Sheriff Robert Luna in September 2025, in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, alleging the department displayed a “pattern or practice” of infringing Second Amendment rights through unreasonable delays in processing concealed carry weapon (CCW) permit applications. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon praised the department for addressing the issues and complying with the Supreme Court’s June 2022 ruling in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen in a Thursday release announcing the settlement.

I knew a few ladies back in the day who figured better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6, and were willing to act. Just sayin...

Granted, there were areas of LA that we did not go into on purpose, and places where you didn’t get off the freeway even if you had a flat! But we knew where they were, and a lot of us were just starting to carry cell phones (Motorola Star Tac for me).

I’m just sorry it’s taken this long for them to finally do the right thing!

Construction workers in Belgium this week uncovered $10.4 million in gold while building a new sewer below a former brewery, according to local police.

Police in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, a Flemish community outside Brussels, said the workers contacted them immediately about the find, which officers cataloged, then placed in a “high-security federal government vault.”

An 18-year-old worker on the site named Kobe told VRT news he at first thought the gold pieces were 1 Euro coins.

No service members aboard the aircraft carrier have died, and the one Sailor who fell overboard Aug. 3 was quickly and safely recovered. The rampant misreporting on Abraham Lincoln’s historic deployment is a disservice to our men and women in uniform and their loved ones.

Folks, deployment on a ship is NOT fun. Especially a carrier, but you do train for it, and the ships crews work hard to take care of everyone. Yes, you work long hours, seven days a week, with few days off, unless you make a port call.

The first hangar, center bottom, was the VP hangar. Needless to say, this is a ‘summer’ shot! And they were busy, as only 2 birds on the ramp, and probably one or two in the hangar, so 5 or 6 out flying on ‘stuff’‘ or elsewhere...

The four little blue hangars were the 57th FIS alert hangars for F-4s back then. The rest of the transient birds were at the far end of the ramp, where the AWACS and KC-135 were parked.

Aeroflot used to try to ‘taxi’ through our ramp, by ‘mistaking’ the tower’s directions to the terminal, which is just out of the picture, lower right.

Fuel trucks, airplanes, and occasionally USAF Security Police were used to ‘block’ their access, to prevent them taking pictures of the airplanes and inside of the hangar.

Flying out of Kef in the winter was always fun, considering the closest alternate airport was 772nm away (Kinloss) which was 2 1/2 hours. Made for some LONG days...

One funny note, they actually do have golf courses up there, and in the summer, you could tee off at midnight, and finish in ‘twilight’ about 0400 in the morning. Drinking in the bar was problematic, since you could stagger out at 1130 or 2330, and not be able to tell the difference... :-)

I’ll be the first to admit ‘I’ am not perfect. I’ve posted things that I thought were right, but were, in fact. wrong. And when I found out, I posted the correction, because I ‘try’ to be right... sigh...

Cedar had actually done a couple of deep dives on things, and found that either-

1. The reference/link didn’t exist.

2. The reference/link linked to another link.

3. All of the references/links linked back to a SINGLE source without correlation.

4. There were no sources that correlated or corroborated the premise in the article.

Of course one of the ‘issues’ with the article above is that it comes from a Pub, not a Dem, so it will immediately be ‘suspect’. Some will say it is rage baiting, and you can bet the MSM will be doing everything they can to cover up/deflect from the issues, if they cover it at all.

There is also the whole what the word ‘means’ now... Merriam-Webster and AP have both changed meanings to words to ‘reflect’ current usage, as we’ve all found out.

Money is another factor. Money buys ‘ad’ time, journalists, and lawyers...

Note that I haven’t talked about AIs/LLMs at all. That is because ‘I’ don’t believe they are a factor yet...

Not that they won’t be in the future, but not yet.

So do your research. And learn who your ‘trusted’ sources are. When in doubt, refer to the old printed encyclopedias, not the new online versions, as they are all suspect, IMHO.

As we’ve seen in the last 10-15 years, what is ‘politically acceptable’ has changed radically.

My question is, ‘who’ actually is driving what is acceptable?

Is the the ‘left’, the new LLMs (AIs), or the ‘special groups’, e.g. LBTQ+???

And what happens when there is pushback?

Those with a ‘platform’ seem to drive their various agendas, but are they really driving anything or merely parroting what they’ve been told to say? I have no idea.

As a ‘boomer’, I know I’m well outside the mainstream today as a lot of what I believe is Christian based, patriotic, and I believe in taking responsibility for my actions. I’m one small voice, with no real access to make a difference, other than with my children and grandchildren. Sadly, even though they basically agree with me, their ‘peers’ are a different kettle of fish, to put it mildly.

There is no question the political landscape has changed radically, from bipartisanship, to partisan, to now dissention within the parties themselves. And more and more people are registering as ‘independent’, eschewing all of the political parties.

Will those independents be what save us???

A fellow walked into a pet store and was looking at the animals on display. While he was there, a Chief Master Sergeant from the local Air Force Base walked in and said to the shopkeeper, “I’d like a line-service monkey please.”

The clerk nodded, went to a cage at the side of the store and took out a monkey. He put a collar and leash on the animal and handed it to the Chief, “That’ll be $1,000.00” The Chief paid and left with the monkey.

Surprised, the fellow went to the shopkeeper and said, “That was a very expensive monkey. Most of them here are only a few hundred dollars. Why did that one cost so much?”

The shopkeeper answered, “Ah, that was a line-service monkey. He can park, fuel, and service all Air Force aircraft, conduct all required ground ops testing, rig aircraft flight controls, and all with zero mistakes. He’s well worth the money.”

With his interest peaked, the fellow looked around and spotted a monkey in another cage with a $10,000.00 price tag. “That one’s really expensive! What can it do?”

“Oh, that one is a maintenance supervisor monkey. He can instruct at all levels of aircraft maintenance, supervise all corrective and preventive maintenance programs, supervise a crew of maintainers, and even do most of the paperwork. A very useful monkey indeed,” replied the shopkeeper.

The guy looked around a little more and found another monkey in a cage at the back of the store. The price tag read, $50,000.00. “Holy cow! What does this one do?”

“Well, the shopkeeper said, I’ve never actually seen him do anything but drink beer, flirt with the girl monkeys, and play with his pecker, but his papers say he’s a pilot.”

“We embrace justice equity, diversity, and inclusion,” the statement read. “Those are the values that unite this Union and allow it to protect women’s sports while creating transformational change. Hate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people, only fuel fear, division, and harm. We will continue to have hard conversations. But we will not be used as political pawns.”
